How to Visit the World Islands in Dubai

The World Islands, or ‘The World’, are a collection of in-progress man-made islands off the coast of Dubai which are being built to resemble the world map. Each island will be themed around the part of the world it resembles. While The World is still being built, a few sections are complete and open for tourists.

So, how can you visit the World Islands in Dubai? Only one island is open for visitors: Lebanon Island. You can visit Lebanon Island by taking a boat from Jumeriah’s Fishing Harbour. Once you’re on the island, you can visit a range of bars, restaurants, lounges, pools, and beaches.

This guide will explore everything you need to know about visiting the World Islands in Dubai, and how to make the most of the experience!

Seeing The World

While you can’t visit most of The World, you can see it when you fly above Dubai. Many flights that come into Dubai during the day fly over The World, and if you look carefully, you’ll be able to see the shape of the islands standing out from the sea.

If you are in Dubai for a few days, you can also arrange to take a helicopter or hot air balloon tour over Dubai. During this tour, you’ll see an aerial view of The World.

However, if you want a more hands-on experience of The World, then you should plan to visit Lebanon Island.

Visiting Lebanon Island

When planning a trip to Lebanon island, there’s a lot you need to consider, including how you’ll get there and what you can do once you arrive.

Getting there

To get to Lebanon Island, you first need to fly into Dubai. Depending where you are in America, the flight can take between 10-15 hours.

When visiting the island, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Day passes are free for children under the age of five, and cost between USD25-75 for children over five and adults, depending on the season you visit. Be sure to check the pass prices online.
  • The island is about five kilometers off the Dubai coastline.
  • The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Coast Guard requires that all visitors to The World keep their day passes and original passports with them at all times.
  • Lebanon Island is only open from 11:00 AM-6:00 PM for children every day. For adults, it is open until 11:00 PM, so make sure you are at the harbor for the last ferry.

What can you do at Lebanon Island?

You don’t necessarily need to go with a tour company to enjoy Lebanon Island. After you buy your pass and arrive on the island, there are plenty of things to do!

The island is fairly small, and you will be able to walk across it in about an hour. This will allow you to take advantage of all the facilities available.

Lebanon Island has two main beaches; one in the South of the island and one in the North. They are clean and warm and filled with sunbeds for you to relax and soak up the sun.

The southern beach is more popular as it has a stunning view of the Dubai skyline. If you’re looking for privacy, head to the North Beach, which is equally beautiful and has a view of an endless expanse of the sea.

There are shower facilities near the beach available. There are also six small huts lining each beach that you can rent. These huts are air-conditioned and have private toilets and couches, just in case you need a respite from the heat.

The pool sits at the center of Lebanon island and is fairly large. After enjoying a swim, relax on the sunbeds that surround the pool or head to one of the nearby bars.

Lebanon Island has two bars that are on either side of the pool. The bars have a carefully curated wine menu featuring exquisite wines from all over the world. The bartenders are also know how to design delicious and potent craft cocktails.

The Restaurant

Lebanon island is home to Toro Blanco, a Mediterranean and seafood restaurant.

Its menu includes healthy salads made with fresh ingredients, gourmet burgers, sandwiches, and sharing platters. Some of the must-try dishes are the seafood platter and the mixed grill platter.

At night, Toro Blanco transforms into a lounge with indoor and outdoor seating, live music, and shisha with a range of different flavors. You can also ask for a private dining area to be set up near the beach, which is perfect for a romantic dinner.

The restaurant also has a popular BBQ beach brunch every Friday.

Other Activities

Lebanon island has a range of other activities that are free for all visitors. These include beach volleyball, table soccer, billiards, and a kids’ play area. You can also hire water sports equipment like kayaks, jet skis, parasails, banana boats, and stand up paddles.

If you want to see the other World Islands, you can also hire a boat from Lebanon island. The boat will take you around some of the other islands so you can see their development.

Lebanon Island’s Future

Lebanon island has a wide range of activities that are sure to help you relax and unwind. But, you should note that the island may not always be open to the public. In 2018, the current owner of Lebanon Island put it on sale for a cool $27.2m.

While there have been no concrete offers yet, the media reports that the current owners are working on several deals. Some of these are reportedly from Sheikhs and celebrities, many of whom would want to make the island a private space.

So, if you do want to visit Lebanon Island, you should plan a trip soon – before it’s too late!

About the World Islands

Before making plans to visit The World, it’s worthwhile learning a little about the background of The World, so you know what to expect.

The History of The World

The world is an ambitious project which began in 2003 when it was commissioned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is the ruler of Dubai. He envisioned it as 300 artificially built islands that would be built in the shape of the world map. The islands are arranged into seven sets to represent the seven different continents in the world.

The work to build the islands began in 2003 but has been a slow process because of financial constraints. In 2012, Lebanon island was opened for public use, and there’s now a restaurant, pools, and bars on the island for visitors to use.

Now, the Kleindienst Group is developing the ‘Heart of Europe,’ a collection of islands themed around Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Ukraine, Switzerland, and Morocco, as a luxury resort. It will be open in late 2020.

Celebrities and The World

In the last few years, several celebrities have reportedly purchased land in The World. For instance, actress Hilary Swank bought land in Aquitania, which is a development in the France and Spain islands.

Michael Schumacher, the famous Formula One driver, is rumored to have bought an island in The World. Similarly, singer Madonna also bought land in The World that includes a villa and a private beach.

Of course, as these pieces of land have been purchased, they are now private and inaccessible to the general public.

Conclusion

While many of the World Islands in Dubai are not complete or not accessible to the public, you can fly over them, or take a boat ride past them. The only island in The World that you can visit is Lebanon Island. You should try to visit it soon!

Lebanon Island is a short ride from Jumeriah Harbour and has fun facilities, including a pool, a restaurant, two bars, and sports facilities. It also has two pristine beaches with beautiful views!

To make it easier to visit Lebanon Island, you can stay near the Jumeriah fishing harbor. There are several hotels in every area which can cater to any budget.

If you visit Dubai, you should definitely try to put a visit to Lebanon Island on your itinerary!

The Story Behind the World Islands, Dubai

Discover the story behind the ambitious island project, as well the hopes for its future.

Nowadays, Dubai is most primarily known for its glitz and glamour, with the United Arab Emirates’ capital home to some of the world’s most opulent (and exclusive) hotels, restaurants and clubs. However, lurking just off its manicured shores is a reminder of the financial troubles that once troubled the country: The World Islands Dubai.

Since launching in the early 2000s, the World Islands have been subject to much speculation. From rumored celebrity purchases to outlandish (and often abandoned) hotel projects, the controversial archipelago’s life has been a storied one, with hopes for completion looking slim after it was abandoned following the 2008 financial crash. For many years, what was once one of the UAE’s most ambitious projects was a sandy ghost town.

However, as Dubai’s popularity as a luxury vacation destination and investment hotbed has grown, as has the outlook for the once-abandoned World Islands. Earlier this year, global hotel group Anantara opened the doors to the 70-room Anantara World Islands Dubai Resort , giving a new buzz of hope for the destination.

What are the World Islands, Dubai?

Sitting around 2.5 miles off the coast of Dubai in the Persian Gulf, the World Islands are a collection of smaller islands designed to replicate the world in miniature, with each island named after its corresponding country. First announced in 2003, the World Islands promised to be the next big thing in the luxury travel realm, with members of the global elite, including Richard Branson and the late Karl Lagerfeld, clamoring to have a piece of the action.

As is standard in the glittering city of Dubai, the World Islands are, of course, not a naturally occurring phenomenon; the man-made archipelago was created by Dubai-based development firm Nakheel Projects, a name associated with many high-profile projects across the region, including St. Regis Dubai, The Palm.

The artificial islands were created by dredging sand from the Gulf and transporting it to the designated spot, with several million tons of rocks used to keep it in place. In total, there are 300 islands in the World Islands, with each ranging from 250,000 to 900,000 sq ft. The entire collection covers some 5.4 miles across.

However, despite the buzz caused when the World Islands were first announced and the numerous individual island sales, the 2008 financial crash saw work on the ambitious development grind to a halt.

At this point, it was estimated that almost $15bn had already been spent, but just one island development was finished with the rest at varying stages of completion. Amongst the chaos of works halting, developers were also forced to deny rumors that the World Islands were sinking back into the ocean.

World Islands’ current developments

Since work on the development halted in 2008 there have been multiple reports of the project recommencing. For many years, the Heart of Europe project was the most convincing. Imagined by the Kleindienst Group, the Heart of Europe development will see a small number of the islands in the World transformed to replicate the continent of Europe – to the extent that fake weather conditions including rain and snow have been created in some areas.

The Heart of Europe project includes the building of a series of luxury hotels, private mansions and floating villas, each of which is designed to transport guests to different European destinations, including Monaco, Venice, Sweden and Germany. While much of the ambitious project is still under development, the group is investing potential investors to register their interest.

However, the most exciting World Islands development is without a doubt the Anantara World Islands Dubai Resort , which opened in February this year and sits in the South America region of the islands. The resort’s 70 accommodations include suites, beach villas and pool villas, all of which feature an abundance of outdoor space in the form of either a private balcony, deck or terrace.

There’s a host of amenities, including a Thailand-inspired spa, an open-air cinema and a floating lounge. Ding options are varied too, with multiple restaurants and bars spread across the resort. And, currently being the only open resort on the whole archipelago affords Anantara an unrivaled sense of privacy and seclusion, with views over the main city of Dubai.

Visiting the World Islands, Dubai

For visitors staying elsewhere in Dubai who just want a glimpse at the fabled World Islands as opposed to an overnight stay, a visit to Lebanon Island – which was the only island to be completed when work on the project initially stopped back in 2008 – can be arranged. Guests can take a day trip to Lebanon Island where they can enjoy its beach club, swimming pool restaurant and beaches.

The island is also available for exclusive hire for corporate events, weddings or private gatherings. It is also possible to organize boat tours around the deserted islands, with private yachts available.

Are the World Islands Dubai for sale?

For the most part, the development and purchase opportunities are a closely guarded secret. An old listing on Private Islands Inc for the entire collection harks back to when the World Islands was just an exciting concept, but at the time of publishing, there is only one individual island listed for sale.

Which island it actually is is not disclosed, but the listing advertises it as being 505,925 sq ft and undeveloped, with an asking price of $16m. While this may feel hefty considering the baggage associated with the World Islands project, if the Anantara resort lives up to expectations, the island could quickly increase in value.

Anyone wanting to own a slice of the World Islands can also look into private purchase opportunities within the Heart of Europe. The project is offering investors the chance to purchase either a second home on one of the resort islands, including luxury villas and mansions, as well as a highly exclusive selection of completely private islands, all of which will have the extensive amenities of the European-inspired hotels on their doorstep.

Can You Visit the World Islands in Dubai

Mandana Joozi

Dubai, the city of dreams, is known for its breathtaking architecture that never fails to wow. One such remarkable achievement is the World Islands, an idea by the visionary ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Construction on The World Islands started in 2003 under the supervision of Nakheel Projects and the renowned architects and engineers Van Oord and Boskalis, who had previously designed the world-famous Palm Jumeirah. However, in 2008, financial difficulties forced a break.

Currently, just a few islands are completely operational, and there are still worries about their stability because of problems with their foundations.

What Is It World Islands in Dubai?

What Is It World Islands in Dubai?

The Dubai World Islands are the first artificial version of the Earth’s surface. The whole collection extends over 8 km (5 miles) and consists of 300 islands with sizes varying from 250,000 to 900,000 sq ft. The Dubai World Islands are an unusual group of tiny islands, each named after a different nation.

The whole development of even a single island and resort has cost more than $15 million. This grand plan presents a novel combination of high-end housing and an unconventional spatial configuration.

This idea is completely original as it uses man-made islands to create a world map. In addition to including five-star hotels and dining establishments, this remarkable development offers a unique opportunity to “see” each of the seven continents in a single day. The Dubai World Islands have a captivating, innovative, and ambitious goal, even if their future is questionable.

  • Accessibility : The World Islands are currently accessible by a 15-minute boat ride from The Palm.

What Is the World Islands Dubai Failure?

Problems with funding and ecological concerns severely limited the Dubai World Islands project. Also, Penguin Marine tried to terminate the agreement because of the project’s slow progress and reports of sinkings connected to erosion and rising sea levels. Better to say that the islands’ alleged inadequate foundations caused worries that they may fall back into the ocean.

Moreover, the contradictory accounts and subsequent legal fights made the situation much more difficult. Photos taken from the International Space Station confirmed safety concerns about sinking in 2010, but project developer Nakheel strongly denied the claims. According to NASA data, there were sinking difficulties, notably with The Palm Jumeirah.

However, the situation was further complicated by Nakheel’s court triumph. Uncertainty surrounds the Dubai World Islands’ future in the ongoing sinking issue. Private purchasing alternatives are still available, highlighting this big company’s many issues.
