Adaptive cruise control supplements conventional cruise control with an active vehicle-to-vehicle distance control feature. Designed for use on freeways and express ways, in vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode, your car automatically accelerates or decelerates in order to maintain a preset following distance from the vehicle traveling directly ahead of you.

To activate the system, press the "ON/OFF" button at the end of the stalk on the lower end of the right side of the steering wheel. The radar-ready indicator will appear in the Multi Information Display.

Accelerate or decelerate to your intended speed, then press the stalk down to set it. If you want to go faster, push the stalk upward and hold until you've reached the desired speed and then release it. Or, if you want to slow down, push the stalk down and hold as you decelerate, then release it once you've reached the desired speed.

To cancel cruise control, tap the brakes, pull the stalk towards you or turn the system off with the ON/OFF button.

Adaptive Cruise Control was designed to maintain the preset distance between your car and the car driving in the same lane directly ahead of you.

When it’s active, it automatically adjusts for changes in the speed of the vehicle traveling directly ahead of you in order to maintain the vehicle-to-vehicle distance you set.

In the event that you would like to change the preset distance between vehicles, you can do so by using the radar range button located on the lower right side of the steering wheel. Simply press the button repeatedly to cycle through the ranges available. You'll find them displayed on the Multi Information Display. And finally, you can disable the distance holding feature by pushing the cruise control stalk away and holding it until the indicator disappears and the conventional cruise control indicator lights up.

Adaptive Cruise Control vs. Cruise Control

The first iteration of the more-basic cruise control system in older Toyota models helps the vehicle maintain a steady speed, ideal for highway cruising.

Adaptive cruise control (ACC) enhances the conventional system by adjusting the car’s speed to match the vehicle in front, especially when the latter slows down.

When the vehicle ahead changes lanes or accelerates, the ACC will return your car to the speed you set.

Newer Toyotas have Toyota Safety Sense, a bundle of active safety features which include dynamic radar cruise control.

The following rival makes also have popular models with ACC:

  • Honda vehicles with ACC .
  • Nissan vehicles with ACC .
  • Hyundai vehicles with ACC .
  • Kia vehicles with ACC .
  • Volkswagen vehicles with ACC .
  • Ford vehicles with ACC .

How to use Adaptive Cruise Control on Toyota Prius 4th generation

Full Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control supplements conventional cruise control with vehicle-to-vehicle distance control.

2009 toyota prius cruise control

It allows the vehicle to automatically accelerate or decelerate in order to help maintain a set following distance from a vehicle traveling directly ahead.

  • To turn the system on, press the on-off button on the cruise control stalk on the steering wheel. The radar cruise control indicator will illuminate, and a message will appear in the MID.
  • Accelerate to your desired speed of 30 miles per hour or more and push the stalk down to set the speed. When you do, the set indicator will appear in the multi-information display.
  • If you need to increase your set speed, push the stalk up and quickly release it for a small increase in speed. Holding the stalk up will accelerate continuously to a desired speed. Release the stalk and the speed will set.
  • To reduce the set speed, push down and quickly release it for a small decrease in speed. Holding the stalk down will decelerate continuously. Release the stalk at your desired speed and the speed will set.

When a vehicle in front of you is detected to be moving slightly slower, your vehicle will slow down, illuminate the brake lights and help you maintain a set distance. If the system cannot decelerate sufficiently to prevent your vehicle from closing in on the vehicle ahead, a warning tone sounds to notify you.

Adjusting gap: Pressing the vehicle-to-vehicle distance button on the steering wheel repeatedly cycles through the three distances available: long, medium or short.

When traveling above 25 miles per hour and there are no longer any vehicles directly ahead of you driving slower than the set speed, the system will accelerate until the set speed is reached.

How to Cancel: To cancel a set speed, press on the brake pedal or pull the stalk towards you.

How to resume after stopping: While using Full Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, when the vehicle traveling directly ahead of you stops, the system is designed to also stop your vehicle. After the vehicle ahead of you starts off, pushing the cruise control stalk up or tapping the accelerator will resume follow up cruising.

System disables itself below 25 miles an hour: If the vehicle ahead of you turns out of the lane and your vehicle is traveling at a speed below about 25 miles per hour, cruise control will be canceled. To resume, accelerate to 30 miles per hour or more and push the stalk up.

Using conventional Cruise Control

Your vehicle can also be switched to operate using conventional Constant Speed Cruise Control.

  • With the system off, press and hold the on-off button approximately two seconds to activate the system.
  • The dynamic radar cruise control indicator will appear and then switch to the cruise control indicator.
  • Press the stalk down to set the speed.
  • To switch back to vehicle-to-vehicle distance control, turn the cruise control off by pressing the on-off button, wait a second and press it again to turn the system on.
  • When the vehicle is shut off and started again, the system will default to the Full Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control system.

April 28, 2023 - Russia-Ukraine news

A wave of Russian strikes left 23 people dead in Ukraine. Here's the latest news

From CNN staff

Rescuers work at the site of a residential building heavily damaged by a Russian missile in Uman, Ukraine on Friday, April 28.

At least 23 people, including four children, were killed and at least 18 others were injured in a wave of Russian missile attacks in central Ukraine on Friday. The death toll will likely continue to rise, officials said, and rescuers are still searching for missing children thought to be under the rubble of a struck apartment building in Uman.

There were 46 apartments inside one of the buildings that were hit, of which 27 were  completely destroyed , according to the Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko. The strike – by a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile – is thought to have caused the highest number of civilian casualties in a single incident since a missile struck an apartment block in Dnipro in January.

President Volodymyr Zelensky offered condolences to the victims' families and said the missile attacks underlined the country's need for modern military aircraft.

If you're just now catching up, here are other headlines you should know:

Ukrainian shelling: The self-declared Donetsk People’s Republic said nine people were killed in shelling by Ukrainian forces in the city of Donetsk. CNN cannot confirm the reported casualties, but unofficial Telegram channels published  video  and  photos  of  extensive   damage  in several areas of the city.

Deported children: Zelensky says he appealed to his Chinese counterpart, President Xi Jinping, this week for help returning Ukrainian children who were deported by Russia.

Denied visit request: The US State Department said it was " deeply disappointed " that its request to visit detained Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich in May was denied. The Russian Foreign Ministry on Thursday said it rejected the request in response to Washington’s denial of visas  to Russian reporters accompanying Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s visit to the United Nations this week.

Call for training on military jets: Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba reiterated the country's call for F-16 fighter jet training from allies in a meeting with foreign ministers from eight countries on Thursday. Getting military training on how to maneuver the aircraft could be the first step in the country gaining access to the jets, Kuleba said.

Visit by Czech Republic and Slovak leaders: The presidents of the Czech Republic and Slovakia visited Ukraine on Friday, their first joint visit abroad , Slovakian President Zuzana Čaputová said in a  tweet  on Friday. Čaputová said the visit is intended to bring "a message of friendship, solidarity & support," noting that the three countries "share parts of common history."

Grain import ban: Zelensky called out the "destructive" impact of bans on Ukrainian grain imposed by several European countries – on the grounds that the imports were undercutting the other nations' domestic prices. He said Friday he had discussed the issue with the President of the EU Council, Charles Michel.

Putin's decree: President Vladimir Putin signed a decree Thursday that allows the deportation of Ukrainian citizens from the territories declared annexed by Russia if they are considered a "national security threat."

Rescuers search for missing children in rubble of apartment building destroyed by missile in Uman

(Carlos Barria/Reuters)

Rescuers are still searching for missing children thought to be under the rubble of the apartment building hit by a Russian missile Friday in the central Ukrainian city of Uman.

Firefighters are trying to reach the lower floors of the bombed-out building, where they believe a young boy and girl are trapped, officials told a CNN team on the scene.

The parents of both children survived the attack and have been trying to call the kids' cell phones. A call went through to one of the phones, but rescuers could not hear anything.

Police at the site have brought in psychologists and a DNA testing center to help local families. A school near the blast site is providing shelter and clothing to families who lost their homes.

The Russian strike killed at least 23 people , including four children, and Ukrainian authorities expect the death toll to climb. The Uman strike came in a wave of attacks by Russia's forces across central Ukraine early Friday.

Zelensky says grain import ban by several EU nations is destructive and "gives dangerous hope to the Kremlin"

From CNN's Tim Lister

A load of corn is poured into a truck at a grain storage facility in the village of Bilohiria, Ukraine on April 19.

President Volodymyr Zelensky discussed what he called the “destructive” impact of bans on the import of Ukrainian grain by several European countries. The bans were enacted on the grounds that the imports were undercutting the other nations' domestic prices.

He said Friday he had discussed the issue with the President of the EU Council, Charles Michel.

“I emphasize that this not only violates the existing Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union but also gives dangerous hope to the Kremlin. The hope that in our common European home, someone's wrong decisions can prevail over common interests.”

Zelensky added: “It is necessary to find a normal, constructive way out of this situation in the European spirit.”

Latest Russian missile attacks underline need for modern aircraft, Zelensky says

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky offered condolences to the families of more than 20 Ukrainians killed in Russian missile strikes on Friday, almost all of them victims of a cruise missile that struck an apartment building in the city of Uman.

“Our Air Force managed to shoot down most of the Russian missiles – 21 out of 23. If not for this, the terrorist state would have managed to claim many more casualties, more lives,” Zelensky said.

He said Ukraine could “save people only with weapons. Air defense, modern aircraft, without which there is no fully effective air defense.”

Zelensky asks Chinese leader for help getting deported children back from Russia

From CNN's Yulia Kesaieva in Kyiv and Niamh Kennedy in London

Zelensky speaks during his nightly address on Friday, April 28.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says he appealed to his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, this week for help returning Ukrainian children who were deported by Russia.

Zelensky shared new details about the diplomatic call, which was held Wednesday, during a joint press conference with the presidents of Slovakia and the Czech Republic Friday.

Zelensky said he used the "important conversation" to raise the plight of roughly 20,000 Ukrainian children who Kyiv accuses Russia of forcibly deporting. The Ukrainian president said foreign countries, including China, need to help Ukraine bring the kids home.

Key background: A report published in February by the Yale Humanitarian Research Lab outlined the expansive network of camps where Russia has allegedly detained Ukrainian children since the start of the war last year.

In March, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Russian President Vladimir Putin and another Kyiv official, Maria Lvova-Belova, accusing them of playing key roles in the scheme.

Beijing and Moscow: Zelensky's call with Xi comes at a time of increased Western scrutiny on China's relationship with Russia.

Putin and Xi  posed as peacebrokers  during a recent visit in Moscow, but the Chinese leader's proposals on ending the war have not included a call for Moscow to withdraw its troops from Ukrainian land.

Zelensky said Wednesday's call included a discussion of Ukraine's territorial integrity.

The Ukrainian leader said he also received a "positive response" from China after outlining the risks faced by any country that supplies weapons to Russia.

US officials have warned in recent months that China could be considering crossing the "red line" and providing lethal military aid to Russia. While the countries have strengthened ties, US officials say they  have not seen evidence  that China has provided extensive material support to the Kremlin.

CNN's Sam Fossum contributed to this report.

US to continue requests to visit detained Americans after denial by Russia, State Department says

From CNN's Jennifer Hansler

Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich, accused of espionage, appears in the Moscow City Court on April 18.

The US State Department is "deeply disappointed" its request to visit detained Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich in May was denied, principal deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel said Friday.

"We have been clear and consistent that American nationals detained abroad, especially those American citizens who are wrongfully detained like Evan, like Paul Whelan, are allotted appropriate and regular consular access by our personnel. And so we're going to continue to insist that," he said at a State Department briefing.

On Thursday, the Russian Foreign Ministry rejected the US request to see Gershkovich, saying the decision was in response to Washington’s denial to provide visas to Russian reporters for Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s visit to the United Nations this week.

Some background: Gershkovich was arrested in Moscow in late March on spying charges, which the Wall Street Journal has vehemently denied . Gershkovich, who faces up to 20 years in prison, is currently being held in a pre-trial detention center at the notorious Lefortovo prison until May 29.

American citizen Paul Whelan has been held in Russia for over four years. His sister attended the UN Security Council meeting that Lavrov chaired on Monday, urging for his release his remarks prior to the meeting.

The US State Department has designated both Gershkovich and Whelan as wrongfully detained.

Death toll climbs to at least 23 after Russian missile strikes apartment building in Uman, Ukraine says

From CNN's Anne Claire Stapleton in Uman, Julia Kesaieva and Niamh Kennedy

Rescuers work at the site of a damaged residential building in Uman, Ukraine, on Friday.

The death toll from a Russian missile strike on an apartment building in Uman has increased to at least 23, according to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry. The death toll includes four children, officials said.

The strike in Uman, which is located in the central Cherkasy region, injured at least 18 other people, Ukrainian officials said earlier Friday.

There were 46 apartments inside one of the buildings that were hit, of which 27 were completely destroyed , according to Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Ihor Klymenko.

East of Uman, a woman and her 2-year-old child were killed in a strike in Dnipro, authorities said.

Russian-backed Donetsk authorities say 9 killed by Ukrainian shelling

From CNN's Josh Pennington

A burnt-out minibus is seen in Donetsk, Ukraine, on Friday, April 28.

The self-declared Donetsk People’s Republic said nine people have been killed in shelling by Ukrainian forces in the city of Donetsk.

The DPR’s Coordination Center said that "massive shelling" killed six women, two men and an 8-year-old girl in the city center, injuring 16 others.

CNN cannot confirm the reported casualties. But unofficial Telegram channels have published video and photos of extensive damage in several areas of the city.

The coordination center said that most of the strikes had been by Ukrainian artillery using 155 mm shells targeting the central Petrovsky district. But it also claimed that multiple launch rockets had been used.

Meanwhile on Friday, Ukraine said that Russian strikes killed more than 20 people in the central city of Uman.

Investigators stand next to burnt-out cars in an area hit by shelling in Donetsk, Ukraine, on Friday, April 28.

Cruise Control Wouldn't Turn on?

Discussion in ' Gen 2 Prius Care, Maintenance and Troubleshooting ' started by Friendlyx , Sep 14, 2017 .

Hey everyone, i have a Toyota Prius 2006, and i was driving about a 30 mile drive, and i tried to turn on the cruise control, however it wouldn't turn on, I kept pressing and the light never came on. I thought maybe it's the light that was just not working and tried to activate it and it wouldn't either. About half way through the trip, i thought i'll try it again and i did and it turned on and was working fine. Is there a reason why this happens? Thank you. You need to rule out clock spring cable and brake light switch. Brake light switch. Depress the brake pedal, the brake lights come on? Release the brake pedal, the brake lights go off? If yes to these two questions, your brake light switch is not the cause of the cruise control not working. Clock Spring Cable. Do the radio and AC steering wheel buttons work at all positions? A simple test is to park the car with the wheels pointing forward, and the steering wheel dead centered. Place a piece of tape at the very top of the steering wheel (this is your 12 o'clock position). Test all the steering wheel buttons (radio, AC, etc), at this 12 o'clock position. Do all the steering wheel button functions work? Move the steering wheel to 1 o'clock, and perform the steering wheel button test again. Go to 2 o'clock and test the buttons. Keep doing this at the other "hour" positions (3, 4, 5, 6), then go to 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6. A broken clock spring cable will reveal itself by intermittent operability of some or all the steering wheel buttons, at certain hour positions. This post has some good pictures of the clock spring cable and why a broken clock spring causes problems. 2006 Prius clock spring (spiral cable) repair | PriusChat If brake light switch and clock spring cable are working, it will be something else. But these two items are the most common culprits.

One way to get these symptoms is to shift to B. Unless you are braking, it is hard to notice you have. While in B you can't use Cruise.

exstudent said: ↑ 1) Drive in a continuous left handed circle, so the broken connection(s) in the clockspring are reestablished and maintained; impossible. 2) Attempt a repair, like the referenced thread in post #4 above; however, this is very short term. 3) Replace the defective clockspring with a Genuine OEM Toyota part; the best long term solution. Since you seem to lack the skills to do this repair, price shop independent shops and dealers on their labor rates. Ask for discounts (AAA, military, Costco membership program, etc). Remember these old proverbs: You get what you pay for. Penny wise, pound foolish. FAKE clocksprings are available on crapbay (ebay) for $8-$30. toyota prius clockspring | eBay Genuine OEM Toyota part costs $220.88 from Camelback Toyota; your original clockspring lasted 11, possibly 12 years (depending on your vehicle production date). 2007 Toyota Prius Parts - Camelback Toyota Parts - Genuine OEM Parts - Free Shipping Many posts of people who were penny wise, pound foolish. Crapbay part failed soon after installation (~1year). Now these people have to redo their labor or pay for someone's labor AGAIN. The clockspring connects your steering wheel airbag to the SRS/Airbag ECUs. Read post #3, and decide for yourself, if your life is worth $8 or $220.88. Be careful of counterfeit Clocksprings / Spiral Cables sold online | PriusChat If you saw the pictures in the referenced thread in post #4, above, you will have seen that the clockspring cable is a few sheets of paper thick. As you know, nothing lasts forever. The car is a tough environment for things to function in: temperature fluctuations, road vibrations, and movement the part may directly experience. It should amaze you that the few sheets of paper thick, clockspring cable, lasts as long as it does. As for the stereo shop possible breaking the clockspring cable, ..., anything is possible. Ask yourself this, how likely is it that the stereo installer, turned the steering wheel all the way left, then all the way right, or visa versa, for a million/billion/trillion cycles, causing unnecessary wear on the clockspring cable?
