Les 45 tours 4 titres des années 50-60

Spécialité presque uniquement française, les 45 tours à 4 plages font rêver ou craquer les collectionneurs. Leurs belles pochettes, d' abord mates, puis glacées restent une référence et un repère inégalé dans l' histoire du son enregistré.  Leur dénomination officielle est : Super-45 tours ou "EP" (Extended-Play), ou encore : 45 tours Durée Prolongée.

Le "Vinyl-boom"

Après la deuxième guerre mondiale, la matière première est rare dans beaucoup de domaines de l' industrie. La gomme-laque a tendance à manquer pour fournir l'industrie phonographique renaissante et il n' est plus question d' utiliser la gomme recyclée fréquemment employée pendant la guerre et qui générait un bruit de fond non négligeable.

Par ailleurs, dès 1947 aux États-Unis, la firme Columbia teste avec succès la gravure microsillon, en optant pour le 33 tours de 30 cm de diamètre, pressé dans une matière plastique, le "polychlorure de vinyle". Sa concurrente directe, la firme RCA elle, opte pour le "format léger" du 45 tours de 17 cm. C'est sur ce format que la jeunesse des années 60 jettera son dévolu, assurant au disque un succès sans précédent. En 1968, année du déclin du EP ("Extended play" ou "Durée prolongée"), il s' en est vendu 20 millions en France.

Pourquoi 4 plages ? En 1951, lors de l' introduction du 45 tours d' abord à 2 titres, les producteurs ont gardé leur habitude de limiter la durée des chansons à 3 minutes, contrainte qui leur était imposée par le 78 tours 25 cm, dont la durée n' excédait pas ces 3 minutes par face. Mais nous ne sommes pas encore en pleine folie de société de consommation, le 45 tours offrant près de 7 minutes de durée par face, les fabricants vont réaliser et faire réaliser aux acheteurs une économie en plaçant 2 titres par côté, du moins dans la production de variétés. La firme Pathé-Marconi lance ce nouveau format de disque en novembre 1953, présenté en pochette "Cartoline"qui laissera ensuite sa place aux pochettes glacées. Il ne s' agit à cette époque que d' offrir une alternative aux acheteurs, sans intention de faire en sorte que le "EP" prenne la place du tout jeune 45 tours à deux titres. C' est pourtant ce qui s'est produit sur une durée de 15 ans.

Cette habitude va donc durer jusqu' en 1967, avant de disparaître l' année suivante au profit du 45 tours 2 titres. Ainsi donc est née cette spécificité presque 100% française, seuls quelques autres pays européens comme l'Italie ou l'Espagne s' aligneront sur le procédé du 4 titres, mais pas de façon systématique comme chez nous. Récemment, nous avons fait l' acquisition de 45 tours 4 titres gravés en Iran à la fin des années 60 et qui présentent soit deux titres d' un même artiste par face, soit quatre titres de quatre artistes différents. Dans les pays anglo-saxons, le 45 tours 2 titres règne sans partage et n' est présenté que sous une simple pochette à trou central, uniquement agrémentée du logo de l' éditeur. On comprend vite que la production française ne représente qu' une petite partie de la production mondiale, et par conséquent, ces 45 tours "EP" deviennent assez vite, pour certains d' entre eux, des objets de collection.

De belles illustrations

Au début des années 50, l' image commence à se développer dans la presse et il ne  sera plus possible de proposer aux acheteurs de simples pochettes sans illustrations. A partir des années 52-53, on voit arriver la pochette illustrée avec un espace important pour la marque du disque (tradition héritée du 78 tours) et une photo de l'artiste en général noir et blanc, ne prenant qu' une partie du recto de la pochette. Le verso quand à lui est utilisé en guise de rappel des derniers succès de l' artiste ou comme catalogue des autres productions de la marque. Par mesure d' économie, un même cliché peut être utilisé sur plusieurs pochettes d' un même chanteur, quelquefois recadré de différentes façons.

En route vers le mythe

Le début des années 60 voit l' arrivée en masse de jeunes issus du baby-boom, très nombreux et bien décidés à consommer chansons et musiques faites sur mesures, en prise directe avec le rock'n'roll des pionniers américains et des groupes de rock français qui en tirent le principal de leurs répertoires, sous forme d' adaptations. C'est l'âge d' or des éditeurs de partitions et des paroliers français qui oeuvrent jour et nuit pour répondre à la demande. Tous les labels de disques vont s' engouffrer dans la brèche, que ce soit les "majors" comme Philips, Barclay, Polydor, Pathé-Marconi, Festival, Vogue, Rca, Decca, etc, ou que ce soit les petites marques comme Pacific, Bam, Véga, qui seront d' ailleurs vite absorbées par les majors pré-citées. Le support rêvé c' est le 45 tours 4 titres, plus abordable pour les jeunes que le sérieux 33 tours, d' ailleurs dévolu la plupart du temps à la musique pour adultes : jazz, classique, opérettes, ambiance.

Suivez l' onglet

Au début des années 60, la plupart des 45 tours 4 titres s' orne d' un onglet détachable d'environ 5 X 1 cm, situé en haut et à droite de la pochette. Son utilité c' est la gestion rapide des stocks des disquaires qui peuvent ainsi débiter leur marchandise en plus grand nombre et avec un volume d' écriture minimum. Il leur suffit, le soir, de comptabiliser les onglets détachables qu' ils ont ôté à chaque vente pour faire le total des ventes de la journée. Les pochettes munies de leur onglet d' origine ont tendance à l'heure actuelle à bénéficier d' une cote plus élevée que celles qui en ont été amputées. Notons que les grands magasins n' utilisaient pas ce système et vendaient les disques sans en détacher le précieux appendice, beaucoup de collectionneurs leur en sont aujourd'hui reconnaissants...

Ces onglets détachables comportent plus ou mois d' indications sur le contenu du disque selon les éditeurs. Au minimum le nom de l' artiste et la référence du disque sont mentionnés, comme : "Liliane St-Pierre, Barclay CF 003", traduire : artiste : Liliane St-Pierre, firme distributrice : Barclay, 3ème disque produit par Claude François. Ou encore : "Les Parisiennes, "L' argent ne fait pas le bonheur", Philips M 437 242, 6ème série. Interprétation : 6ème 45 tours des Parisiennes pour la marque Philips, en pressage médium, c'est-à-dire en qualité courante. Quelquefois le prix est indiqué comme : "9,75 NF + TL", à l' époque où la TVA n' existait pas, le prix pouvait varier en fonction des taxes appliquées dans la région de vente.

Un petit disque à grand trou

La particularité du 45 tours à 4 titres, c' est son trou central d' un diamètre de 38 mm, conçu à l' origine pour les électrophones à changeur automatique. Explication : avec son format "court" (2 chansons par face) et son prix relativement attractif pour l' époque (en général 10 francs), ce support a pour inconvénient d' exiger une intervention manuelle fréquente, ce qui est un handicap par exemple dans les surprise-parties. Pour pallier à ce désagrément, les constructeurs d' électrophones ont imaginé un système avec lequel on peut empiler de 6 à 10 45 tours sur l' axe central du plateau, spécialement conçu à cet effet, et de ne nécessiter une intervention manuelle que lorsque la pile de disques a été jouée. Pour loger la mécanique, l' axe a d' abord nécessité un trou central assez large, le 45 tours a donc été conçu en conséquence.

Des stries caractéristiques

Autre contingence mécanique ; pour pouvoir tourner et être joués les uns empilés sur les autres, les 45 tours ne doivent pas déraper en glissant les uns contre les autres, c'est la raison pour laquelle, à partir de l' année 1962, la plupart des fabricants vont concevoir l' objet garni de stries perpendiculaires au centre, autour de l' étiquette centrale, et vont presser les disques plus épais au centre que sur le pourtour. C'est pourquoi, lorsque vous vous avisez d' en saisir une pile d' une vingtaine, ceux-ci vous glissent immanquablement des mains !

Des pressages appelés "disques-puzzles" étaient apparus au temps des 78 tours, cette gravure-puzzle a existé sur quelques 45 tours à 4 titres. Sur chaque face 2 sillons sont entrecroisées et il est bien difficile de savoir lequel sera joué lorsqu'on pose le tête de lecture sur le début du disque. Ce genre de gravure-gadget n'a pas connu de lendemain.

Les pochettes se glacent

A partir du milieu des années 50, les fabricants abandonnent la pochette cartonnée mate, dite "Cartoline", pour la pochette toujours cartonnée mais glacée, boom économique aidant. C' est surtout à partir de 1960 que paraissent les plus belles réalisations, jusqu'en 1968, année de l' abandon du 45 tours à 4 titres. Un pelliculage plastique vient donc recouvrir le recto de la pochette ainsi que les rabats arrières et quelquefois le verso est plastifié lui aussi. Cette technique prend le pas sur celle employée dans les années 50 et qui consistait tout au plus en un simple satinage. Le pelliculage a aussi souvent contribué à une bonne tenue dans le temps des pochettes, sauf bien sûr en cas de chaleur et d' humidité excessives. 

Comment dater les 45 tours

A une époque où les artistes enregistraient plusieurs 45 tours 4 titres par an et où la mode renvoyait très vite les succès aux oubliettes, les fabricants n' avaient pas trop intérêt à mentionner les dates de sorties sur les pochettes. Philips, Pathé-Marconi et toutes leurs sous-marques ne font pas mention des dates ni sur les pochettes, ni sur les étiquettes centrales. Ces indications arriveront seulement avec l' avènement du 45 tours 2 titres. Les disques Barclay ont très souvent fait mention des dates de sortie, mais de façon fort discrète, en bas à gauche ou à droite du verso des pochettes (mois et années). Les disques Decca et Vogue ont, eux, contourné le problème en indiquant l' année de sortie sur les étiquettes centrales. La firme RCA faisait de même en ajoutant toutefois assez souvent le mois et l' année de sortie en petits caractères au bas du verso de la pochette. Pour les autres marques il faut pratiquer par recoupements et consulter les discographies d' interprètes éditées dans les journaux spécialisés comme "Je chante", "Juke-Box Magazine" ou "Le Club des années 60". Les fan-clubs peuvent aussi donner de bonnes pistes, ainsi tout simplement que les rééditions en CD des artistes concernés. Sur Internet des sites comme "Encyclopédisque", "Discogs" ou "Bide-et-Musique" donnent aussi des indications précises.

L' entretien des disques

Il est dans tous les cas toujours important d'éviter l' humidité et la proximité des sources de chaleur. Serrés verticalement de façon raisonnable dans des casiers ou dans des boites en plastique, en bois ou en carton fort, les 45 tours ont toutes les chances de vieillir dans de bonnes conditions. Un excès d' ultra-violets est, comme pour tout document à base de papier ou de carton, préjudiciable à la bonne tenue des couleurs des pochettes. A éviter à tout prix : le stockage dans une cave en sous-sol ou dans un grenier non isolé.

L' écoute des 45 tours 4 titres

Bien qu' il soit souhaitable de copier les disques rares sur CD ou de les numériser, on peut sans inconvénient écouter ces précieux objets sur une chaîne hi-fi munie d' une platine pour disques en vinyle. Les puristes mettront un point d' honneur à les écouter sur une chaîne équipée d' un ampli à lampes, pour retrouver le vrai son de ces années-là. Il est possible aussi de retrouver le son d' origine sur les électrophones d' époque, de marque Teppaz ou autre, mais il est indispensable de faire en sorte que le poids du bras n 'exerce pas une force d' appui de plus de 5 grammes, il essentiel aussi que le saphir ou diamant de lecture soit en bon état (un saphir se remplace au bout de 50-60 heures d'utilisation, le diamant dure dix fois plus longtemps). L' emploi des mange-disques est à proscrire absolument, un seul passage dans une de ces machines diaboliques labourera définitivement le fragile sillon des disques ! (Et rien de repoussera). Il n' est pas non plus recommandé de les employer dans les juke-box, le sillon final étant très près de l'étiquette centrale, l'automatisme de l'appareil interrompt l'écoute avant la fin de la deuxième chanson. Et la force d' appui y dépasse les 5 g fatidiques, de toutes façons les utilisateurs de juke-box garnissent en général leurs machines de 45 tours à 2 titres, moins rares, souvent moins chers, et au sillon plus large donc plus solide.

Des collections-références

Au début des années 60, plusieurs maisons de disques s' engouffrent ans le "vinyl-boom" et décident de donner leur chance à nombre de jeunes artistes. Si Pathé-Marconi opte pour des coups d' essai d' artistes en 45 tours 2 titres (pour limiter les frais de production), la maison Vogue, dirigée avec brio par le bouillant Léon Kaba, n' hésite pas à lancer une série réservée aux débutants, baptisée "Contact". Si bon nombre de disques sortis dans cette série sont restés l' unique tentative, ou presque, des jeunes concernés (Xhémil, Les Kimonos, Alain Dumas, etc), pour d' autres, cette série a été le vrai tremplin de leur carrière : Françoise Hardy, Michel Delpech, Michel Paje, Stella. Voilà un thème de collection tout trouvé. 

Petit chanteur deviendra grand

Autre thème de collection : les débuts de ceux qui ont réussi. Avant sa brillante carrière de producteur pour Françoise Hardy, Véronique Sanson et France Gall, Michel Berger tente sa chance le temps de 7 45 tours 4 titres sur le label La Voix de son Maître, entre novembre 63 et juillet 66. Alain Legovic se lance avec un premier 45 tours en novembre 68, persiste sur plusieurs 45 tours simples mais ce sera Claude François qui lui mettra le pied à l' étrier en le métamorphosant en Alain Chamfort. Alain Baschung lui, "galère" le temps de plusieurs 45 tours avant d' enlever le "c" pour s' appeler Bashung et le succès se fera cependant attendre jusqu'à la fin des années 70. Quand à Sardou, il lui a fallu s'essayer le temps de quelques 45 tours - devenus rares - chez Barclay avant d'atteindre la reconnaissance en 1969 avec "Les bals populaires". Notons aussi que Bernard Tapy (avec un "y") a tâté de la chanson, le temps de trois 45 tours sortis chez RCA-Victor en 1966. Côté étranger, il est intéressant de savoir que les Beatles, du moins pour trois d'entre eux, ont d' abord œuvré en Allemagne au sein d' un groupe appelé Tony Sheridan & the Beat Brothers et que Procol Harum a d' abord fait ses classes sous l'appellation "The Paramounts". Peu vendus à l' époque, tous ces Super-45 tours sont devenus pour la plupart rares, et donc difficilement accessibles.

Des thèmes par dizaines

On peut très bien collectionner aussi les créateurs de chansons, l' exemple le plus marquant dans le domaine reste Serge Gainsbourg. Ses interprètes (surtout féminines) se dénombrent par dizaines : Petula Clark, France Gall, Valérie Lagrange, Dominique Walter... Mais précisons que tout ce qui est en rapport avec ce personnage se négocie à des cotes assez élevées. Les 45 tours publicitaires 4 titres sont aussi fort intéressants et recèlent quelques fois des surprises : sketches inédits de Poiret & Serrault pour la marque Shell, disques avec plages pour chanter soi-même, accompagné par un orchestre de studio, diffusés par les biscuits l' Alsacienne - le karaoké avant l'heure. Les vedettes du grand et du petit écran ont souvent donné dans la chanson avec plus ou moins de bonheur. Nos chanteurs nationaux confirmés comme Sacha Distel, Mireille Mathieu, Les Surfs, Sylvie Vartan, etc ont par ailleurs produit de nombreux Extended-plays pour le marché international en allemand, en espagnol, en italien, etc. Assez difficiles à trouver en France, ces galettes de vinyle ne manquent pas non plus d' intérêt.

Le retour du bon vieux EP

A la fin des années 70, profitant du regain d' intérêt du public pour le rock'n'roll des années 50, quelques producteurs font enregistrer à des groupes français des 45 tours en format 4 titres avec glaçage de pochette. Ainsi apparaissent les Alligators, les Costards, et puisque la nostalgie est porteuse, certaines maisons de disques comme RCA leur emboîtent le pas en rééditant sous ce format des artistes comme Philippe Lavil dont la carrière a démarré après l' époque des fameux EP. Jusqu' à la fin du vinyle, sporadiquement, les éditeurs de disques sortent des 45 tours à 4 titres uniquement pour la promo radio, ces pièces sont maintenant assez recherchées.

Où les trouver

Absolument partout, du simple vide-grenier aux conventions de disques, dans les magasins spécialisés et dans les petites annonces, sur Internet. On en trouve dans tous les états possibles et imaginables, de la ruine la plus totale à l' état flambant neuf. Notons que, comme pour les autres formats de disques, dans les listes éditées par les vendeurs sur internet, un code est souvent utilisé quant à l' état des disques et des pochettes, voici un exemple: - 45 tours Elvis Presley "It' s now or never" RCA 75 619 (VG / G+). Les indications entre parenthèses donnent en premier l' état du disque : VG = Très bon (Very Good) et en deuxième l' état de la pochette : G+ = Pochette bonne / très bonne, (Good), l' indication + faisant remonter la cote. Les indications ainsi abrégées vont de P (Poor) à M (Mint = état neuf), les précisions + et - peaufinent en quelque sorte l'indication, un G+ peut ainsi être très voisin ou égal à un VG-. Bien sûr les marchands spécialisés proposent en général des disques souvent rares et recherchés, le service ainsi rendu ayant une valeur. 

A quels prix ?

Comme toujours, le prix est extrêmement variable selon l' état du disque, son contenu artistique et le lieu d' acquisition, cela va de 0,50 € pour un 45 tours 4 titres très courant comme par exemple Richard Anthony "J' entends siffler le train" à ... 1000 € pour le 45 fameux 45 tours des Beatles avec la pochette dite "Sandwich". (Ils sont tous les quatre représentés en costumes typiquement français et tiennent chacun un sandwich à la main). Entre ces deux extrêmes, absolument tout est possible, les 45 tours de groupes comme les Chaussettes Noires se trouvent à environ 5 €, ceux des groupes anglo-américains comme les Rollings Stones, les Beach Boys ou les Four Seasons oscillent entre 2 et 15 €. Les pionniers du rock comme Eddie Cochran ou Buddy Holly se négocient entre 15 et 40 €, les productions plus rares comme Kim Fowley ou les In-Betweens peuvent atteindre 300 € pièce. Le 1er 45 tours de Claude François, sous le nom de "Kôkô", trouve en général preneur à 600 €. Les chanteurs de variétés comme Enrico Macias, Georges Chelon ou Adamo n' ont qu' une très faible cote : de 0,50 à 1 € le disque, même chose pour la musique classique, l' opérette, les chansons pour enfants. Les musiques de films ne bénéficient pas d' une cotation particulière, mais s' alignent sur ce qui se pratique en général dans le monde de la chanson, avec plus ou moins de valeur selon l' interprète ou le chef d' orchestre concerné. Le rock'n'roll français des années 50 comme Henri Cording (Henri Salvador) ou Gabriel Dalar se situent entre 75 et 120 €.

Dans l'univers du vinyle, les 45 tours de collection s'apparentent souvent aux pièces les plus recherchées. Voyant parfois leur valeur estimée à plus d'une centaine de milliers d'euros, ces précieux trésors attisent moultes convoitises chez les collectionneurs. Mais quels sont les 45 tours de collection les plus chers du marché ? Quelles pépites sommeillent peut-être sagement dans votre grenier ou votre propre bac de vinyles ? Les 45 tours de collection les plus onéreux du marché!

Sans surprise, le 45 tours de collection le plus cher de l'histoire revient au King, le grand Elvis Presley. En effet, « That's All Right », sa première sortie sur le label Sun Records en 1954 est aujourd'hui estimée à plus de 158 000 euros ! Cette improvisation en fin de session d'enregistrement, reprise d'un titre de Arthur Crudrup et considéré par beaucoup comme l'une des pierres angulaires du rockabilly, s'est imposée comme le début de la révolution rock.

Estimé à plus de 30000 euros, le deuxième disque de cette sélection constitue l'un des enregistrements les plus recherchés de la MOTOWN. « Do I Love You (Indeed I Do) » de Franck Wilson, édité en 1965, est l'un des disques les plus rares de la compagnie de disque américaine d'Universal. Ce prix exorbitant s'explique notamment par le fait que seules deux copies seraient encore en circulation aujourd'hui, en faisant le 45 tours de collection universal le plus rare du monde !

Aucun classement des disques les plus chers ne saurait se passer des légendaires Beatles. Les quatre garçons dans le vent sont en effet de tous les records. Si nous avons déjà pu nous intéresser à certaines pièces de l'oeuvre des lads de Liverpool dans notre article sur les prix des vieux vinyles rares, c'est aujourd'hui sur la première release du groupe que nous allons porter notre attention : « Love Me Do – PS I Love You ». Première chanson joué par McCartney lors l'audition du groupe devant le patron de Parlophone George Martin, Love Me Do est l'une des pièces maitresses de la musique du XXIe siècle. Si cette édition avoisine les 15000 dollars sur le marché, ce n'est pourtant pas pour sa qualité musicale, mais bel et bien pour la faute d'orthographe écornant le nom de McCartney sur la pochette du disque ! Retiré directement du marché, seules quelques copies subsistent, en faisant des 45 tours de collection à la valeur incroyable.

Intéressons-nous désormais à la scène garage américaine des années 60. Le disque « Boy What'll You Do Then » du groupe Denise and company s'arrache à plus de 9600 euros. Formé à San Francisco en 1967 et mené par Denise Kauffman, le groupe peut se targuer d'avoir sorti le 45 tours de collection le plus cher de l'histoire pour un groupe de femmes ! Si cette chanson écrite pour Jann Wenner, fondateur de Rolling Stone Magazine et petit ami de la chanteuse à l'époque, atteint des sommets sur le marché, c'est tout simplement qu'il n'en reste apparemment que deux ou trois copies dans le monde entier !

Sorti en 1979, le morceau « Voulez-vous ( Colombian Mix 1979) » du groupe suédois Abba figure en bonne place dans notre sélection. Estimé à plus de 10000 euros, ce tirage colombien marbré est exceptionnel de par son exotisme et sa rareté. En 1979, le groupe décide de sortir le titre « Voulez-vous » dans de multiples versions avec des pochettes de différentes couleurs. Cette version colombienne ne sera éditée qu'à quelques exemplaires faisant aujourd'hui grimper les enchères.

Y a t'il un 45 tours de collection qui sommeille dans votre grenier?

Si les 45 tours de collection dont nous avons parlé jusqu'ici s'érigent en trésors cachés quasiment intouchables du fait du peu d'exemplaires encore en circulation dans le monde, il existe d'autres 45 tours pouvant très bien sommeiller chez vous en toute discrétion, dans un bac. Alors qu'ils pourraient atteindre des sommes considérables sur le marché.

Ainsi, le Super 45 tours des Rolling Stones « Get Off of my Clouds », sorti en 1971 s'arrache à près de 1000 euros. Il en va de même pour le Super 45 tours de Sylvie Vartan chanté en allemand comprenant la chanson Millonen, estimé à près de 800 euros. The best resorts in Arizona, according to Travel + Leisure readers, capitalize on their desert surroundings for design and on-site activities.

Fiery sunsets, dry heat, and cactus-studded landscapes — those are a few of the hallmarks of a desert holiday at the best resorts in Arizona. Travel + Leisure readers' favorites are primarily found in the hills surrounding Phoenix and Scottsdale or in the Sonoran Desert. To some travelers, those environments might just seem barren, but to others those pockets of the Copper State offer the space and solitude to recharge and leave more refreshed than when they arrived.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels (including safari lodges) were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city hotel, resort, or safari lodge based on their locations and amenities.

Most of readers' picks for 2022 are traditional resorts with luxe accommodations, world-class restaurants, and a plentiful array of activities. One such property — No. 3 Sanctuary Camelback Mountain, now a Gurney's Resort & Spa — is beloved for its culinary program by chef Beau MacMillan of Food Network fame, as well as hiking trails that show off the area's impressive natural vistas. The restorative magic of the desert can also be felt at No. 8 Mountain Shadows Resort Scottsdale. "There are serene private areas that are quite relaxing," one reader wrote.

But glamping mecca No. 5 Under Canvas Grand Canyon also impressed voters, who appreciated the property's proximity to the namesake wonder's South Rim — a mere 30 minutes away. "Sleeping in a yurt under the stars with bonfires around was incredible," wrote one guest, who noted that the food exceeded expectations.

Still, it was a property that married nature with unabashed pampering that took home the No. 1 spot among the best resorts in Arizona for a second year running. Read on to find out which hotel landed on top — and which others joined it on this year's list.

1. Castle Hot Springs, Morristown

This 1,100-acre desert retreat, which has been in operation for more than 100 years, offers a variety of wellness, adventure, and culinary experiences. "An incredible destination to recharge your mind and body," wrote one fan. "The meals are exquisite and abundant in their offerings, and the staff makes you feel at home." While yoga and meditation are on offer, the most popular activity is — as the resort's name implies — taking a dip in the thermal waters, which are naturally loaded with magnesium and other health-promoting minerals.

Key West is not just a party town , though, and its many personalities are most evident in its spate of resorts. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, a high-energy friends weekend, or a family vacation, there is a perfect place to rest your head. And no matter where you stay, from the moment you arrive you’ll feel an instant wave of relaxation. Here's our list of the best hotels in Key West.

Kimpton Key West: Winslow's Bungalows Arrow

Winslow’s Bungalows is downright cool. The place just oozes a hip vibe with its retro-chic decor and intimate setting that makes you feel like you have the run of the place. It’s a boutique resort occupying several historic homes in the heart of Old Key West. Named for Winslow Homer, who wintered in town, it feels like it has a story behind it, and indeed the homes once belonged to a cast of characters. There may be 85 accommodations, but you’ll feel more like a guest in a private home than in a hotel. The resort fee covers the usual suspects, including towels at the resort’s three pools, but it also includes a kit with a mask and snorkel for getting up close and personal with the local marine life. Ask the concierge for the best snorkeling spots.

The Perry Hotel & Marina Key West Arrow

A newer hotel in Key West, the naval-inspired Perry Hotel is tucked away on Stock Island. Rooms overlook a marina, adding to the nautical vibes. Very good on-site dining, a stellar pool area, and clean, chic rooms make this one of the area's best options. All rooms have spacious balconies overlooking either the adjacent marina or the mangroves. They're also bright and feel beachy, with wooden ceiling fans and local photography. First-floor rooms have direct pool access. You're treated to sparkling wine as soon as you walk in, which sets the tone for the rest of your stay.

Casa Marina Key West Arrow

Casa Marina is located on the southern edge of the island and has its own private beach—something few Key West hotels can claim. It also enjoys a rich history, hosting a roster of celebrities and politicians in its nearly 100 years. At one time it was used by the U.S. Navy and was used as the U.S. Army’s Sixth Missile Battalion during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Breakfast is a big deal here, and you can indulge in the Grand Buffet at Flagler’s Ballroom, but don’t worry if a decadent morning meal is not your jam—there’s a grab and go spot, too. Sun Sun Beach Bar & Grill is open for lunch and dinner, and HMF Sidecar is good for watching the game with a beer. The spa offers indoor and outdoor spaces and features the standard massage and facial treatments, but for something a bit more unusual, custom blend an aromatherapy oil to take home with you.

Sunset Key Cottages Arrow

Sunset Key is a private-island splurge just a skip away from the mainland. The pastel buildings are surrounded by nothing but lush gardens loaded with frangipani, sand, and turquoise blue waters, making the resort a secluded sanctuary. Rooms are perfectly beachy, but some cottages are more modern than others. Pastries and fruit are delivered each morning, and your kitchen can be stocked with drinks and snacks (for a fee). The bath amenity game is spot-on here, too, and water views are virtually unobstructed. Given that you're on an island, you'll need to boat over from the mainland for all the action. Luckily, you can take the resort's private boat launch. Check-in takes place across the water at Opal Key Resort & Marina, but service is seamless: Your luggage is wrapped in plastic for the quick boat ride over, then it's all smooth sailing—literally and figuratively.

Oceans Edge Resort & Marina Arrow

Down a residential road on Stock Island you reach the entrance to Oceans Edge, which fronts canals and a marina on the island just next to Key West. It's lush with tropical plants and palms, and has a bit of a residential feel too, with Key West cottage-style buildings (three stories, so not towers) that could just as easily be homes as a hotel. There's sparkling water everywhere and bobbing boats at every turn. It opened in January 2017 on Stock Island, an active commercial fishing hub, so it's a bit removed from the Key West crowds but still just a 10-minute free shuttle drive to Duval Street. The resort occupies a manicured 20-acre swath of Stock and is the biggest resort player on the island. It attracts people who know that the best thing about the Keys is getting out on the water to fish, snorkel, sail, and dive—and you can park your boat right in front of your room—a huge perk. Bonus tip: nearby Yahman's Authentic Jamaican Jerk Shack does great ribs and jerk sandwiches you can sit outside to eat or bring back to your room's balcony to enjoy. 

Southernmost Beach Resort Arrow

Southernmost jokingly bills itself as "the closest cabana to Havana ," but it's not exaggerating: The tropically infused hotel is just blocks away from the island's southernmost point, in a quiet part of  town. The grounds have colonial and Victorian buildings and lush grounds fringed with palm trees and excellent ocean views. The Ocean Front Balcony King is the way to go here; with southern views across the Atlantic, these rooms are spacious and bright. The resort is south of most of the action on Duval Street, making it a great option for sanctuary-seeking couples or families with kids.

Eden House Arrow

A quirky and cute boutique hotel, Eden House feels like a home. Don't expect a sprawling resort complex with overeager bellboys; rather, you're in for a traditional, wood-paneled Key West house fringed by palm trees and other lush greenery. Each room is unique. In the most basic rooms, you won't get a TV, a refrigerator, or luxe amenities, but they're are clean and charming, with extremely comfortable beds. The pool area is the place to be at Eden House. The staff is even happy to recommend restaurants that will deliver straight to your lounge chair. This is a great way to get a slice of true-blue taste of Key West.

Parrot Key Hotel & Villas Arrow

Recently refreshed, Parrot Key is yet another historic Keys property that's back and better than ever. The verdant grounds have four pools; the resort's rooms, suites, and villas, meanwhile, all have views of the gardens or the Gulf of Mexico. Even the entry-level rooms span 375 square feet and receive loads of light, which accents the neutral gray and tan decor. Little touches, like L'Occitane amenities, upgrade the experience. This resort is beautifully renovated and reasonably priced, and the four pools ensure you're never fighting for a lounge chair.

Pier House Resort & Spa Arrow

Another Key West icon, Pier House made its name in the '70s as a haven for the creative set. Today, it's a sprawling resort right on the water, with plenty of activities, an excellent spa, and great dining options (including the bar where Jimmy Buffet had his first gig). Some rooms have that Old Florida classic décor—think plenty of rattan—but suites have patios or balconies, making them ideal for enjoying a Key West sunset. Beds and amenities are nice, too. Pier House is in the middle of it all, but once you're facing the ocean, you'll forget all about the hullabaloo on Duval Street .

Ocean Key Resort & Spa Arrow

Live music and crowds define this area. If you like being in the center of it all, it doesn’t get much better. Two words: Sunset Pier. It’s the place everyone comes to witness the sunset, and Ocean Key looks out over it. You are definitely not in New York City in these rooms and suites, with pastel-hued walls, cheery floral and striped fabrics, and colorful rugs. It’s tropical island vacation décor to a tee, and done with an elegant touch. Balconies look out over the Gulf of Mexico or Duval Street, adding to the sense of place. Balinese influences blend with local flair at SpaTerre, where the treatment menu overflows with enticing options (there are ten different types of massages alone). Body scrubs, facials, and nail care round out the comprehensive offerings. 

The Saint Hotel Key West, Autograph Collection Arrow

A departure from the area's pastel B&Bs and kid-packed resorts, The Saint is a swanky, sexy boutique hotel with just 36 rooms tucked away from Duval Street. Rooms are decorated in the hotel's signature blue-and-white color scheme, with mood lighting to drive the vibe home. It can all feel like a bit much, but under the snazzy facade are contemporary and classy details, including Frette linens and Niven Morgan toiletries. Once you step outside, you'll find that you're right in the heart of everything Key West has to offer.

The Marquesa Hotel Arrow

The eggshell blue exterior of this historic hotel on the National Register of Historic Places coos to you a block off Duval Street. You're in for a special stay. The vibe is old Key West to the max, with a tropical interior courtyard where a patio overlooks the pool and butterflies flit. Rooms are housed in separate Key West style cottages and the sister hostel, Marquesa 414, is across the street and up half a block in a newer building. There are a total of 44 rooms between the two (called Marquesa Hotel collectively) and three pools. The staff have been here for years and know the property inside and out. They can arrange anything you could want to do around Key West , from private sunset charters to architecture tours. There is a true sense of place, zero kitsch, and historic charm presented in an updated way.

The Marker Harbor Resort Arrow

Two acres of tropical gardens. Three pools. A harborfront location with a breezy, laidback vibe yet still close to the action. Need we say more? It’s lively but not raucous. Luxurious, but not stuffy. Cool, but not so hip that it hurts. It’s just right. The 96 rooms and suites are the very picture of contemporary coastal chic, with clean lines and carpets echoing the waves just outside the oversized windows. Natural light floods these rooms, while bright pops of color in the pillows and artwork lend a sense of place without reading cliché tropical. Starboard Restaurant & Bar features all-day dining. The menu is somewhat limited but covers the basics, and the cocktails are especially enticing (who doesn’t want a Key West Spritzer with a view of the harbor?). The Marker gives you the best of both worlds—water views and a lush, tropical setting, plus proximity to the excitement of Old Town and Duval Street.

Travel + leisure co. and sports illustrated launch new resort brand for college towns.

Bama Rush is no longer just for TikTok.

Travel + Leisure Co. , the membership travel brand formerly known as Wyndham Destinations , is rolling out a new offering for college sports fans who want game day to last from check-in through checkout.

The membership travel offering acquired the rights to Sports Hospitality Ventures LLC, which is the hotel and resort licensee for the Sports Illustrated brand. Travel + Leisure Co. plans to leverage that into a new brand that will offer a full-service hotel, vacation club and residential condos at each "campus" in popular college towns with devoted fan bases.

The new brand offering is slated to open its first project in Tuscaloosa, Alabama — home to the University of Alabama — in late 2025.

"What I'm more excited about is the passion that's in Tuscaloosa is in college towns all over the United States," said Michael Brown, president and CEO of Travel + Leisure Co., in an interview with TPG ahead of the launch. "This is not going to be a one-and-done. It's going to be a network that we're looking forward to expanding in the future."

#BamaRush to check-in

The first of the company's planned college town resorts will be across the Black Warrior River from the University of Alabama. Why Tuscaloosa? The membership travel brand's namesake magazine calls it one of the leading college towns in the U.S., and the University of Alabama has been on the cover of Sports Illustrated a whopping 41 times — more than any other university.

"There's a lot more to that story and we're going to celebrate former athletes, current athletes, coaches in the history and the legacy that is in each of these college towns," Brown said.

Renderings show guest rooms with sports-influenced design and plenty of amenities, ranging from go-kart racing to swimming pools and batting cages.

Beyond Tuscaloosa, each Sports Illustrated Resorts college town resort is expected to feature branded, property-specific attractions, live-action sports and entertainment, dining and wellness facilities. Renderings show the sports and entertainment venue has the working title "Field of Dreams," but Brown indicated that could change to something more location-specific depending on the college town.

Expect the Tuscaloosa location of Sports Illustrated Resorts to feature 125 to 150 hotel rooms, around 200 vacation club units and 60 to 75 condos. Given the enthusiasm toward colleges in the Power Five conferences — the Southeastern Conference, the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Big Ten Conference, the Big 12 Conference and the Pac-12 Conference — it's easy to think about who might consider purchasing a condo at a Sports Illustrated Resort.

"Because we're talking about the University of Alabama, let's talk about the SEC: The alumni demand and market is clearly out there," Brown said.

We'll be sorely disappointed if the grand opening party in 2025 doesn't get a "#BamaRush" theme.

The future of Sports Illustrated Resorts

Future locations are in the works for the college town division of Sports Illustrated Resorts and will be announced shortly. Brown indicated the plan is to announce several more by year's end, saying "we're well down the path with many."

While Brown didn't provide specific locations for future resorts, it's likely safe to look to colleges with major football and athletic programs as leading contenders for where Travel + Leisure Co. will expand next.

The new brand will focus on college and university towns, but the broader Sports Illustrated resort portfolio will also have locations in leisure destinations that also include beach clubs at those resorts.

The Sports Illustrated Resorts Cap Cana location in the Dominican Republic location is now open and was even a backdrop to the 2023 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. An additional location in Orlando is expected to open next year.

"People are seeking differentiated experiences that allow them to be more active and participatory, and Sports Illustrated Resorts are delivering the ultimate experiences for guests through the hospitality destinations we are creating," Christopher Schroeder, CEO of Sports Hospitality Ventures LLC, said in a statement .

It's too early in the development process for the leadership team to provide specific rate expectations for the new brand. But the Sports Illustrated tie-in, coupled with the lack of experiential products like this in many college markets, means it's almost certain the company will be able to charge more per night in the towns and cities they expand to.

"We're entering these markets with the objective of tying the university with the college athletic experience with the iconic brand like Sports Illustrated," Brown said. "Built with that as the mindset, not as an afterthought of 'We need to build a hotel room,' accordingly, I would think that the brand [and the] experience in connection with the universities would drive premium yield, whether it's residential, vacation club or hotels."
