Aaron Baddeley will play his 500th US PGA Tour event

After making a stunning entry to golf by winning the Australian Open as a teenager 20 years ago, one Aussie will rack up a massive career achievement this week.

Two-time Australian Open champion Aaron Baddeley concedes he may have “underachieved” as he reaches a career milestone this week when he lines up for his 500th PGA Tour event in California.

But the now 42-year-old, enjoying a career resurgence in 2023, is confident there’s plenty more good stuff to come as he becomes just the sixth Australian to reach the monster US PGA milestone, a list that doesn’t include the likes of Greg Norman and Adam Scott.

Despite racking up more than $36m in career earnings, with four titles in the US to go with his back-to-back Open titles, his first coming as an amateur in 1999, Baddeley, who last won in 2016, said he hadn’t met his own expectations after turning pro with much fanfare in 2000 as a 19-year-old.

But declaring he’s iron play has never been better than in 2023, and leaning on the “simplicity” of his repeatable swing and the enthusiasm for the game from his six kids, Baddeley said it had become easy to keep the “fires stoked” in his quest for that fifth PGA Tour win.

“I would say I feel like I have underachieved with what I expected, the goals that I have set,” he said from California on Wednesday.

“Life-wise, I feel like I have exceeded all my expectations with my family, kids, my wife. I couldn’t be more at peace and joyful off the golf course.

Aaron Baddeley after winning his first Australian Open in 1999.

“And I still feel like I have a lot of my best years ahead of me. With where my game is at, the simplicity of it, I feel like I have goals I can still achieve and that’s not just a wishy thing, it’s right there, ready to go.

“I’ve never lost the passion, now even at 42, it’s never difficult for me to go out and practise and grind and try and get better. My boys love the game too, we spend a lot of time practising and playing with them at home. It’s pretty easy to keep the fire stoked.”

Baddeley is in a rare group too. Only 151 players in the history of the PGA Tour have made more than 500 starts, a testament to the Australian’s longevity across a career that has thrown up countless physical and mental challenges.

Having been as high as 16 on the world rankings, and as low as 836 as recently as 2022, Baddeley, playing on a past winner’s exemption, has climbed up to 225 with three top-10 finishes this year.

It has put him within reach of keeping playing rights for 2024, with another four events to play before he returns home for the first time since 2016 to play the Australian Open in Sydney.

He said it was “crazy” to think he’d played 500 events, more so given the likes of Norman and Scott haven’t achieved the same feat, and had the energy and desire to keep playing even as the next generation of players stake their claim on the most competitive tour in the world.

“No.1, the body feels great, I’m not battling any injuries or issues so you can still put in the work and the time to get better,” he said.

“I feel like the experience of what I have learned, knowing what to work on, how to approach a tournament, you can’t teach experience, and with the simplicity of the game and how consistent I am starting to hit the ball, it plays in to my strengths.

“I still feel like I have a lot of my best years ahead of me.”

Aaron Baddeley, contending in Bermuda, looks to be just the sixth player since 1980 to pull off this feat

1437554050

Aaron Baddeley of Australia lines up a putt on the eighth green during the third round of the Butterfield Bermuda Championship at Port Royal Golf Course.

Since 1980, only five players have pulled off the accomplishment on the PGA Tour. On Sunday at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, Aaron Baddeley will look to become the sixth to win a tour event after Monday qualifying.

Baddeley, a four-time PGA Tour winner but without a victory since 2016, will start the final round at Port Royal Golf Course at 16 under, just two shots back of the lead shared by Seamus Power and Ben Griffin. Playing this season on past champion status, the Aussie wasn’t in the field this week, so he decided to try his hand at Monday qualifying.

The 41-year-old shot five-under 66 in the qualifier held in Orlando on Oct. 17 before advancing in a 6-for-2 playoff to earn a tee time this week in Southampton, Bermuda. Funny enough, Baddeley also advanced out of a 6-for-2 playoff to Monday qualify for the Fortinet Championship last month, where he finished T-36th.

Baddeley, whose last tour win came at the 2016 Barbasol Championship, has struggled in recent years, with his last top-10 on the tour coming in 2019. For the veteran with more than $22 million in tour earnings, though, being in contention in Bermuda brings with it a certain comfort.

“It feels like it's the right spot to be, to be honest,” said Baddeley after shooting a third-round 68. “I feel like my game's been in the spot to be in this position for a while, and it's just nice to be here, be back having a chance to win.”

A Baddeley win on Sunday would be consistent with a theme that is emerging at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship in its short four-year history. Starting with Brendon Todd’s win in 2019, Port Royal has proven to be a putter’s paradise.

Both Todd and 2020 champion Brian Gay finished inside the top four in putts per round en route to their wins, and though last year’s champion Lucas Herbert finished T-6 in the stat, he led the PGA Tour in strokes gained/putting for the 2021-22 season.

Like Todd, Gay and Herbert, Baddeley has long been regarded as one of the best putters on tour. The Aussie led in strokes gained/putting in 2015 and has rarely strayed from the top 10 in the stat throughout his 20-year career.

Though his numbers have slipped over the past few years, Baddeley said earlier in the week that he’d “got the putting figured out again now,” which has been confirmed so far this week, as he sits T-2 in putts per round.

Should the putter stay hot and he come back to win, Baddeley would be the first Monday qualifier to win on the PGA Tour since Corey Conners did it at the 2019 Valero Texas Open.

Brian Gay plays his shot from the eighth tee during the third round of the Butterfield Bermuda Championship.

Brian Gay, Mr. Bermuda?

The last couple of seasons on the PGA Tour have been pretty quiet for Brian Gay. Except when the five-time tour winner steps onto the island of Bermuda. Since the start of 2020, Gay has recorded just two top-25s on tour, with both of them coming at Port Royal.

In his Bermuda debut in 2019, Gay finished T-3 before winning the title in 2020, his first PGA Tour victory since 2013. After continuing the good play with a T-12 finish last year, the 50-year-old sits at 15 under after three rounds this week, just three shots back of Power and Griffin. Gay, known for his strong putting, chalks much of his success on the island up to the greens at Port Royal.

“I grew up on greens virtually identical to this,” Gay said after a bogey-free third-round 66. “They’re not too fast, grainy bermuda, something I’ve played my whole life, so it’s just comfortable for me.”

Since turning 50 last December, Gay has split his time between the PGA Tour and the PGA Tour Champions in 2022. He finished fourth at the Chubb Classic in his senior debut in February and has recorded four more top-10s since, including a T-6 finish last week in Virginia.

As Gay shifts more and more of his playing time to the 50-and-older circuit in the coming years, he may be smart to keep Bermuda circled on his calendar. Over the last two seasons on the PGA Tour, Gay has made just shy of $1.2 million. Of that $1.2 million, nearly $850,000 was banked in Bermuda.

A couple rookies look to jumpstart their careers

Ben Griffin has a share of the 54-hole lead in just his eighth career PGA Tour start. Not bad for a 26-year-old who, as of 18 months ago, was working as a mortgage loan officer. After a three-win college career at the University of North Carolina and a victory on PGA Tour Canada in 2018, Griffin had become weary of tour life, trading his clubs for a more stable income.

“It was a combination of burnout a little bit from COVID and then also financially, I didn't want to rely on my parents anymore for everything,” Griffin said after his third-round 66.

Childhood dreams don’t die easily, though, and in the summer of 2021, he caught the bug again. Earning Korn Ferry status that fall through Q school, Griffin made quick work of the developmental tour in 2022, finishing eighth on the regular season standings to earn his PGA Tour card.

After rounds of 65, 64 and 66 to grab a share of the lead in Bermuda, Griffin is well-positioned to make quick work of the PGA Tour as well.

“It's nuts definitely to be sitting here talking to you guys, getting ready to win a PGA Tour event tomorrow,” Griffin said. “I'm just super blessed to play golf. I've got that attitude where I've got nothing to lose and I'm going to go out there firing.”

Kevin Yu, the former Arizona State standout who earned first-team All-America honors in 2019, sits just two back of the lead. A former No. 1-ranked amateur in the world, Yu earned his PGA Tour card for the 2022-23 season after a solid year on the Korn Ferry Tour. Like Griffin, Yu is in position to ignite his rookie campaign with a strong Sunday in Bermuda.

The 24-year-old has made two of his first three cuts this season, including a top-20 finish at the Sanderson Farms Championship. Making just his 14th career PGA Tour start this week, Yu spoke after his third round about what he’s learned in his short tour career that may help him tomorrow.

“Just really have to trust your game,” Yu said. “Just be really patient about every circumstance because you might face different weather or whatever tomorrow, so just trying to be very consistent and trust my game and just be 100 percent on every shot.”

Aussies on Tour: Baddeley hits rare milestone

by Tony Webeck

Aaron Baddeley lines up a putt

He will join rare company when he tees it up in an all-Aussie pairing in Round 1 of the Fortinet Championship on Friday morning, but Aaron Baddeley is determined to look ahead.

Paired with Greg Chalmers and Geoff Ogilvy, the 42-year-old this week becomes just the sixth Australian to log 500 starts on the PGA TOUR, a list that Baddeley assumed would be longer.

With 565 appearances, Steve Elkington leads the way for Aussies in the USA, followed by Stuart Appleby (551), Jim Ferrier (528), Robert Allenby (525) and Bruce Crampton (513), Baddeley chalking up No.500 at Silverado Resort 23 years, six months and one week since his first at the 2000 Honda Classic.

It’s an extraordinary accomplishment that secures his place in PGA TOUR history, but a four-time winner who admits he has under-achieved on the golf course wants more.

“I feel like a lot of my best years are ahead of me,” said Baddeley, who has been working with American instructor Mike Adams for the past two years.

“I feel like where my game is at, the simplicity of it is only going to get better.

“I’ve definitely got goals that I can still achieve – and this is not like a ‘wishy’ thing; I feel like it’s right there, ready to go.”

When Baddeley joined the PGA TOUR as a 21-year-old rookie ahead of the 2003 season, he was ready to go.

Already a two-time winner of the Australian Open, Baddeley had played 21 PGA TOUR events before obtaining his card via the secondary Korn Ferry Tour in 2002.

In his first start as a full member at the 2003 Sony Open, Baddeley lost in a playoff to reigning Open champion, Ernie Els, who made a 55-foot birdie putt at the second extra hole to deny the young Aussie.

“I felt like I knew a lot of the TOUR already because I’d been playing PGA TOUR events for three years so it didn’t feel like my first event, if that makes sense,” he recalled.

“When I got to Hawaii I was confident and ready to go play.

“I fully expected to beat Ernie on that last day, especially when he hit it left off the tee on 10. I was like, Oh, I’ve got a real chance here .

“And then he made that 50-footer… I still remember that.”

It would be three years before Baddeley became a PGA TOUR winner for the first time at the Verizon Heritage at Hilton Head, his most recent victory coming at the Barbasol Championship in July 2016.

For one who won his national Open as an 18-year-old amateur and turned professional to great fanfare, it is a somewhat underwhelming record until you consider life in its totality.

He and wife Richelle celebrated their 18th wedding anniversary this year and have six children, some of whom are stoking dad’s enthusiasm for the game with their own growing interest.

“I feel like I’ve under-achieved, definitely, with what I expected and the goals that I had set,” said Baddeley, who becomes just the 151st player in history to play 500 PGA TOUR events.

“Life-wise, I feel like I’ve exceeded all my expectations. My family, my kids, my wife – I couldn’t be more at peace and joyful off the golf course.

“Even now at 42, it’s never difficult for me to go out and practise and to grind and to try and get better.

“My boys love the game as well so I spend a lot of my time practising and playing with them at home.

“There are definitely some days where I think I’ll take the day off and then they’re like, ‘Dad, can we play nine holes?’ And I’m like, ‘Sure, let’s go.’

“It’s a lot of fun to be able to play and practise with them. It makes it easy to keep the fires stoked and wanting to get better.”

Baddeley is not the only Australian to chalk up a milestone this week.

After celebrating his 50th birthday last month Queenslander Scott Hend will make his debut in the senior ranks at the WINSTONgolf Senior Open on the Legends Tour, a tournament won last year by fellow Aussie Richard Green.

Green is in South Dakota for the Champions Tour’s Sanford International while Adam Scott, Min Woo Lee and Jason Scrivener are in London for the DP World Tour’s showpiece event, the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

At 41, Aaron Baddeley Is Looking for a Second Act to His Career

At 41, Aaron Baddeley Is Looking for a Second Act to His Career

  • Author: Alex Miceli

Kyle Terada/USA TODAY Sports

The Australian, armed with a rebuilt, simpler swing, is trying to play his way back into a regular schedule. A T7 at the Sony Open was another positive step.

aaron baddeley pga tour status

HONOLULU — For 41-year-old Aaron Baddeley, the Sony Open has the potential to be a springboard for a career that Baddeley admits has been disappointing.

The Australian has just four career wins to his credit, the last coming in a playoff over Si Woo Kim at the 2016 Barbasol Championship, an opposite field event in Alabama.

Since that win in Alabama, Baddeley only had a smattering of top 10 finishes.

Then late last year at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, the father of six children recorded his first top 10 since a T7 at the 2019 Corales Puntacana Resort & Golf Championship, and Sunday he followed that up with another T7 at the Sony Open after back-to-back 65s.

“My goal this week was just to get a little bit better every day, and I did that,” Baddeley said. “Ballstriking was pretty spot on today. I can honestly say I think I hit one shot offline today. I haven't done that in forever.”

Playing off past champion status, one of the lower categories available, Baddeley didn’t even know he was in the field until Saturday.

With no schedule to count on and a game that Baddeley believes is finally ready for prime time, the Australian can’t wait to build on this week’s success at next week’s American Express, where he has earned a spot due to his top 10 at Sony.

“It was nice coming in because I didn't feel 100 percent comfortable starting the week, wasn't quite right,” Baddeley said. “It was a good little goal just to set, just to get a little bit better every day, and it was nice to do that and nice to make a few putts just to capitalize on some good shots.”

Baddeley can look to September 2021 as a potentially seminal moment on his comeback. That’s when he started working with Mike Adams.

Going to a much simpler swing, Adams has given Baddeley a motion he feels he can easily control without much outside assistance and can work through any issues on his own.

Baddeley also found his putting stroke in an old drill he used at least 15 years ago, which simply is a short backswing and an exaggerated follow through down the line.

Once he started, his cadence in his stroke came back as well as the preferred strike and roll of the ball.

“If I can just keep hitting it the way I'm hitting it and just swinging away and trusting it and making some putts, then the rest sort of takes care of itself,” Baddeley said. “The goal is always to win. Anytime I turn up at a tournament, I want to try and win. That's what we're here for. I'm not here to sort of make up the numbers. I want to get my wins. I want to get back in the top 50 in the world, and you've got to win to do that. It's nice to know that I feel like I have the game to do that now, which is great.”

Aaron Baddeley shoots 66 to take Puerto Rico Open lead

  • Copy Link copied

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico (AP) — Aaron Baddeley shot a 6-under 66 on Saturday at windy Coco Beach Golf and Country Club to take the third-round lead in the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open.

Baddeley had a 12-under 204 total for a one-stroke lead over Nate Lashley in the event that was canceled last year because of Hurricane Maria.

“I hit a lot of greens today,” Baddeley said. “I just feel like it was a pretty low stress today. I hit the ball close a few times, I had some short birdie putts, so just doing a few things like that made it pretty comfortable.”

The 37-year-old Australian won the 2016 Barbasol Championship for the last of his four PGA Tour titles.

“The last couple weeks I haven’t quite hit the ball as I normally have been hitting it,” Baddeley said. “And then figured out one little thing I wasn’t quite doing, one of my keys. And this week I’m hitting the ball really well. And also making some putts. That’s key.”

Lashley, tied for the second-round lead with D.J. Trahan, had a 69.

“It was up and down, and a couple times it died, and then it’s blowing again,” Lashley said about the wind. “But it seems like it’s always pretty much blowing here consistently, 10 to 15. But it’s just something you got to deal with. You got to hit good shots and get it on the green and hope you get the right gust.”

Martin Trainer was 10 under after a 69, and Trahan had a 71 to drop into a tie for fourth at 9 under with Joey Garber (65), Martin Piller (66), Wyndham Clark (69) and Johnson Wagner (69).

Daniel Berger, at No. 72 has the highest world ranking in the field, was 6 under after a 69.

Rafael Campos, the Puerto Rican player who won a Web.com Tour event in the Bahamas in January, shot 74 to fall into a tie for 50th at 1 under.

Bryson Nimmer, the Clemson senior making his first PGA Tour appearance, was even par after a 72.

The winner will receive a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour and an exemption to the PGA Championship, but won’t get an invitation to the Masters.

Nuggets' Aaron Gordon: Sniffs triple-double in win

Share video.

Gordon accumulated 12 points (5-11 FG, 0-3 3Pt, 2-2 FT), 11 rebounds and seven assists across 32 minutes during Saturday's 114-103 win over the Lakers in Game 1 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals.

Gordon didn't do much in the first two quarters since he was dealing with foul trouble, but he stepped his game up in the second half and delivered a strong showing, ending just three assists away from a triple-double. The Nuggets will go as far as Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray can carry them, but Gordon's contributions on both ends of the court will be pivotal for the team's success. Gordon should continue to see favorable matchups in this series as long as he gets paired with Rui Hachimura.
