Nusa Penida travel guide

Besides the smoothly blue coastlines are sweeping in cliffs to create the impressive shapes, the nature brings here many supremely beautiful sceneries, attractive enough for travelers from afar.

Nusa Penida island

In addition, you can have an actual experience in a daily life of local residents because of this spot with a still wild and intact scenery due to not so many travelers’ arrival.

A travel paradise, Nusa Penida island is greeting all of you

1 day in Nusa Penida (Nusa Penida day trip): How to get to Nusa Penida island, Bali?

Nusa Penida is a western island of Bali. There are multiple ways to arrive in Sanur port from the center.

Map to direct to Sanur

The traffic in Bali has no subway, has frequent traffic jam, and is always overcharged by taxies’ drivers, therefore, we chose Klook as a companion. With over 1 million VND/person only, our team was assisted by a Klook’s staff to take us from the hotel in Kuta area to Sanur port.

Sanur Port

Every carrier is here specific and every passenger on the ship shall be supplied one name-tag to identify the ticket of which carrier is from.

Many boats to get to Nusa Penida island

If you lose your way, you shall base on the colors of name-tag to follow. One-way (departure/return) ticket price is from 100,000 IDR ~ 175, 000 IDR upon the carrier.

A boat for transfer to Nusa Penida from Sanur

There are 3 departure trips from Sanur port and 3 returning trips from Sampalan harbor in the island for every day.

Water surface at Sanur port in the morning is twinkling as crystal

From Sanur port, the ship spent around one hour to take us to Nusa Penida island. You might rent motorbikes to have your experience in the local residents’ life from faraway island.

Experience in staying with a local family

The rental price is about 75, 000 IDR ~ 100,000 IDR for the whole day, it’s up to your discussion.

Going around Nusa Penida island by motobikes

In addition, you can rent a car driven by your own driver and go with a local tour guide. Coconut tree ranges along to the paved roads.

Coconut trees ranges along to the paved roads

Due to a tour booking on Klook, Mr Wayan & Kadek – two local tour guides have waited for us for a long time. These two guys are Klook’s staffs in Bali, therefore, we didn’t worry anything. The routes on the island were almost asphalted, but are narrow and haven’t many vehicles for travel. The infrastructure of this place still has a lot of inadequacy, however, the natural scenery is ultimately spectacular.

The paved roads in Bali

Every smoothly blue coconut trees range is stretched on the winding roads that sections you have to go up and then go down the slopes, to cross the forests, cliffs, coastlines and then continuously pass on the potholes caused by the traces of fallen rock, obviously that is a very fantastic, amazing and also interesting feeling.

Close-up of a boat ticket to Nusa Penida island

Because of only one day on the island, Wayan and Kadek took us to visit the major landscapes such as Kelingking beach, Angela Billabong cliff, Broken beach, and Crystal Bay – the spots mentioned in the schedule of Klook as well.

Kelingking Beach

The formations of Indonesia’s islands were mostly from volcanoes, the strong erosion of seawater deeply striking against the cliffs created several small bays inside the mountainside. Day by day, the sea waves have ridged into rock rapids to become a majestically spectacular scenery.

Nusa Penida 1 day itinerary (Nusa Penida one day itinerary) — Morning – Afternoon: Visit the spots for extremely virtual photography

A first destination where Wayan and Kadek took us was Kelingking Beach. It was nearly one hour to reach to Kelingking Beach from Nusa Penida wharf. You shall be here attracted in an eye-catching natural scene. If you are a believer indulges in photography, this place shall not make you disappointed. Looking down from above, a full shape of “a giant dinosaur” is creeping into the cave, exposes its tail to the sea side.

Kelingking beach is like a dinosaur creeping towards the sea

Left side of such dinosaur is an ellipse shaped small island as an egg, right side is a white sandy beach with deep blue water, sea waves lap on the purely white sand. This is a specific location where should not omit while footing on Nusa Penida island.

A giant dinosaur in Kelingking Beach

Next, Wayan and Kadek waited for us to visit Angel Billabong cliff. From afar, this cliff looks as a big pool formed by the lava eruption inside a volcano. The pool is located between two cliffs that the interior is the azure jade water.

Angela Billabong Cliff with azure blue water

Momentarily, the big waves overflowed from the sea, hit and covered the cliffs and then melted, the whole pool was risen to a fully white color as some giant snow hills in a vision that you usually watch in films.

Angel Billabong Cliff

Broken Beach is not far away from there. This place has a legendary stone bridge dividing a border between outside of the sea and inside of the deep blue natural pool. Day by day, the seawater has overflowed in the pool through a huge hole under the corrosive mountain edge, likely such stone was broken by someone. That is a reason that people named Broken Beach.

Broken Beach for lovers

If you have time to stay on the island, you can walk along on that stone bridge to see the sunset. Nobody can know when was such bridge from, just know that this is a masterpiece which the nature brought to this island, anybody who came to Bali must drop in this bridge.

Broken bridge

Nusa Penida island day trip (Nusa Penida one day trip) — Afternoon – Evening: Enjoy the delicious food of the locality and visit Crystal Bay

We had lunch in a local restaurant on the island. This tour price of Klook included lunch fee, so you don’t need to worry about food and drink. This meal including one dish (cooked rice/noodles) accompanied by drinks. This restaurant’s space is quite luxurious enough for your unreal life under the sultry weather in the equatorial country.

Lunch with Mie Goreng at the local restaurant on the island

After lunch, our final destination was Crystal Bay, a landscape having an extreme wild beach with the crystal azure water. However, Crystal bay does not possess a white sandy beach as same as the other sea areas due to impaction of the volcanic lava eruption. The waves are adequately strong, are washed over ashore for every time, you can be scratched caused by fragments of stones or corals colliding on feet if you are not careful. Therefore, you should arrange the personal protection equipment such as glasses, life-jacket, etc. for swimming.

Snorkeling in the clean blue sea of Crystal Bay

Being known that we liked taking photos, Wayan and Kadek earnestly kept stuffs for our seriously characteristic experience.

Beautiful Crystal Bay but you should be careful with fragments of stones or corals

We only had one day to discover Nusa Penida, therefore there were a few of spot we went. If there is more time, you should spend 2-3 days to explore all the islands and also the other famous places such as seeing of sunset at Banah Cliff Point, swimming in Tembeling Forest pool, Rumah Pohon tree house, Peguyangan (Guyangan) waterfall, Suwehan beach, Atuh beach, Bukit Teletubbies hill, swinging experience at Saren Cliff Point or coral snorkeling in Gamat bay and etc.

Banah Cliff Point - Nusa Penida

If you don’t know how to get there, don’t worry because Klook shall support you everything.

Saren Cliff Point

Thanks to Wayan and Kadek – Klook staffs in Bali – new friends who are very nice. Surely, we shall come back here in a recent day.

An unforgettable Nusa Penida day trip

When you purchase through links on our site we may earn a commission, Learn More >>

Visiting the gorgeous Island of Bali from Australia is on many people’s travel itineraries. The Island of Gods has many stunning beaches, epic locations for sunsets, amazing food, and warm, happy locals who are always smiling, and ready to share their Island home with us.

But it is the islands that are just a little further on the horizon that strike in the hearts of a traveller and ensure a special place in your heart for Bali. Nusa Penida is one of these places. It is an island bustling to the brim with holidaymakers but what is the best way to enjoy a Nusa Penida day trip?

A Nusa Penida adventure with Klook

Crystal bay, more travel inspiration for your trip to bali, how do you get to nusa penida.

One thing about trying to organize a Nusa Penida one day tour in this part of the world is the uncertainty of getting transport and being able to get around the island to all the big sites.

Bali relies heavily on tourism but getting to some of the most popular sites can be fraught with scams, unreliable drivers and in some cases a language barrier.

Travelling with family, large groups and even solo travelers the plethora of options can be overwhelming and at times downright confusing.

Public transport is nearly non-existent, and then you run the gauntlet of having to deal with vendors on the beach looking for the next foreigner to overcharge.

We were able to take all these issues out of the equation when we went on a Nusa Penida day trip through Klook. For those that are not familiar with Klook, they are one of the biggest tour booking sites in the world.

Klook has the extra advantage of a money-back guarantee if you have to change your Nusa Penida tour packages for some reason.

nusa penida day trip klook

We settled on the Nusa Penida day trip with a photographer , yes our guide doubled as a photographer giving us the added bonus of someone capturing our amazing family travel moment for us. Having a photographer with you takes out all the hassle of worrying about getting great pics during your best day trip to Nusa Penida. After the Nusa Penida tour package, you will get access to all the digital copies of the amazing photo taken.

Nusa Penida in one day

The Nusa Penida tour guide for Klook (in our case his name was Putu), along with a driver will pick you up at your hotel in a car suitable for your travelling group. For our day trip to Nusa Penida that was 7.30 am because we were staying in Sanur.

*Pickup times will vary by where you are staying in Bali as you have to catch the 8 am fast boat to Nusa Penida for your Nusa Penida day trip.

Arrival at the Port of Sanur

The Port of Sanur is best described as chaotic. You will find a row of booths selling tickets to Nusa Penida with what seems like hundreds of people scrambling to get tickets to the boats powered by 5 giant outboard motors off the back lined up along the beach.

When you arrive for your Nusa Penida day trip with Klook you breeze past the chaos straight to your boat, all with the help of your personal Klook guide.

Getting on the Bali to Nusa Penida boat can be a challenge

Boarding the boat is where the Nusa Penida day trip fun begins! Much like a military beach landing, you must judge the waves right as you step up on the back of the boat to avoid getting too wet. It’s the sort of organised madness you only see in Asia but it is made easier with the help of the men manning the boat. They help you climb aboard and if you have luggage they load it on for you.

*In happier news the Government is currently building a proper harbour at Sanur which will alleviate the need to board the boats from the beach through the waves.

Tips for boarding the boat to Nusa Penida:

  • Remove your shoes
  • Try to stick together for boarding
  • Listen to the men helping you
  • Don’t rush or be rushed by other travellers
  • Have all electronics in waterproof bags
  • Wear shorts or clothes than can get wet
  • Bring a travel towel to dry off if you need

Once on board, you can either sit downstairs in the rows of seats provided or you can climb a ladder attached to the side of the boat and sit upstairs. The sometimes rocky boat ride to Penida takes between 45 minutes to 1 hour.

*A word of warning you will get wet if you sit at the back of the boat near the motors

Getting off the boat at Nusa Penida

Arrival at Nusa Penida

The Penida boats are reversed into shore at Toyapakeh Nusa Penida Port. People disembark once again trying to avoid the waves and scurry up the beach to be met by drivers, tour operators and people selling sarongs and sunglasses.

Putu from Klook Bali who was already off the boat and waiting for us directed us to our new driver Made, who will take you to all the best sites on Nusa Penida with Klook.

Our driver Made and guide Putu explained that the first stop on the tour would be Angel Billabong and Broken Beach. Driving through the main street at Toyapakeh you pass stalls, restaurants, guest houses and more tourists as you head into the hills of Nusa Penida.

The shops and people give way to forests and luxury villas in the mountains to the epic Nusa Penida beaches.

nusa penida day trip klook

Angel Billabong

After reaching Angel Billabong, our driver Made got us to the best spots to get memorable photos. Made took photos with our mobile phone as well as some short videos while Putu took pictures with his bigger DSLR camera.

The Nusa Penida Angel Billabong is a breathtaking location on the island of Nusa Penida. The ocean is a deep blue and the cliffs are high, making it a popular tourist spot on Nusa Penida. The photos taken here are simply stunning.

Broken Beach Nusa Penida

Just a few hundred meters away is the popular Broken Beach which you easily walk to from the Angel Billabong. In reality, you can not swim at or even get to this Nusa Penida beach here, but it makes for amazing memories in the form of photos.

Part of a cliff face has given way forming that has created a small cove. Nusa Penida Broken Beach is a great place to watch the waves crash on the rocks and have some wonderful pictures taken.

*You will also find plenty of places between Angel Billabong and Broken Beach to stop and have a drink or purchase one if you need to while you explore Nusa Penida.

nusa penida day trip klook

Lunch on the Nusa Penida day trip

By this time it was nearing mid-day so we headed to lunch at Restaurant Penida. There were lots of people doing the same sort of Nusa Penida day trip eating here and it was a popular spot.

The restaurant had a good choice of meals and we had chicken satay, potato curry and crispy Ayam for lunch which filled us up for the rest of our Nusa Penida trip.

We spent around 30 minutes having lunch which was enough time for us. There wasn’t a set time frame and we found our drivers before heading off to the number 1 attraction on Nusa Penida.

Kelingking Beach

Kelingking Beach is probably the reason you are visiting Nusa Penida beaches. It is the location of thousands of popular Instagram photos and adverts for exploring Nusa Penida.

You will find people posing on cliff tops stairs leading to the Kelingking beach and on the beach itself, and believe me some photo locations at Kelingking are breathtaking.

nusa penida day trip klook

For those who want to head to the bottom of Kelingking beach, the walk is around a 2-hour return, so you will have to check with your guide to see if time allows for you to visit this Nusa Penida beach. I would not even consider this unless you are very fit and healthy as the steps are steep and can be dangerous.

nusa penida day trip klook

Our guides Putu and Made got us into position near the steps to catch the iconic picture at Kelingking Beach. The blue waters, the cliff faces and sunny skies make these images great memories of our Klook day trip to Nusa Penida.

Pictures of us as a family will be put on canvas and hold pride of place in our home for years to come. The best thing about having experienced guides is they are in the know. Made then took us away from all the people and along an adjacent cliff face for more great images from our Nusa Penida day trip. Be aware there will be crowds at most of the sites.

There are plenty of shops between the car park and where the best pictures of Kelingking Beach are taken. We took this opportunity to grab ourselves and our guides some ice creams to cool down since it was nearly 30 degrees.

The last stop on our Klook Nusa Penida day trip tour was at Crystal Bay,

For this one you can bring your bathers and have a swim, or go snorkelling if time allows, Crystal Bay reminded me of the Virgin Beach in Bali. It is set in a picturesque cove with a sandy beach, sun lounges with umbrellas, restaurants, and bars bring your food and drinks while you relax.

Nusa Penida diving with a snorkel can be done with equipment hired from off the beach stalls.

nusa penida day trip klook

The crystal clear waters look so inviting and the rocky outcrop in the water gives it the feeling of being in Thailand. Our kids enjoyed paddling in the water and having some fun winding down on this Nusa Penida day trip.

We took the time to chat with Putu our guide and learn some about his life in Bali while enjoying some cool drinks beside the water.

Crystal Bay beach is certainly popular with the young crowd and day trippers from Bali as well as people who are staying in Nusa Penida accommodation close to the beach.

After enjoying the afternoon sun on the beach we headed back to catch our boat back to Bali. Putu had a driver waiting for us in Sanur who dropped us back at our hotel where we started 9.5 hours earlier.

Why did we choose a visit Nusa Penida day trip?

Sitting on the beach at Sanur in Bali, we have always gazed out at that island on the horizon. If you are at the beach early the sun rises nicely over the hills on Nusa Penida as it lights up the vast holiday island of Bali.

It has left us wondering what draws people there, what makes them return, and what epic locations it would have in store for any visitor.

Also, some of the most amazing pictures of Kelingking Beach and other Nusa Penida beaches made us take the plunge and choose a Nusa Penida day trip.

Top tips for a Nusa Penida day tour

We found it to be much hotter on our Nusa Penida trip than Bali as there is no shade when visiting these locations. You will find shops selling drinks etc at Broken Beach, so make sure you stay hydrated and put on some sunscreen for this tour on Nusa Penida. We spent around an hour or so at Angel Billabong and the Nusa Penida Broken Beach.

the blue ocean waters at Nusa Penida

The roads on Penida are not very good, to say the least, so the journey will be slow and filled with bumps and turns to avoid potholes and get around other cars.

Be aware that Nusa Penida is a very popular destination and there will be plenty of other people on the island doing the same set of sites you are. Be prepared to have to wait your turn for the best locations to get a picture. Your team from Klook will take you straight to the best spots, so hopefully, you will not have to wait too long.

Things to take with you to Nusa Penida sights:

Going on a day trip to Nusa Penida you should consider taking:

  • Travel towel
  • Smaller notes for the stalls
  • Waterproof bag

Is Nusa Penida worth visiting?

We totally enjoyed our day trip to Nusa Penida, it had a real feel of an Asian experience from boarding the boats off the beach, to jostling for the best selfie positions. This Nusa Penida Tour and travel with Klook gives you a real look at the scenic highlights of Penida and Klook are the best people to book with.

The outstanding tour guide Putu and our driver Made were first class, they knew their jobs well and did what they could to make exploring Nusa Penida amazing for us all. Book with Klook today for a day tour package

We hope this article from us here at   Wyld Family Travel has you inspired to visit Nusa Penida with Klook. There are so many things to do in Bali that will have you entertained for your family’s whole stay, and a trip to Penida should be at the top of your list.

When we asked him why, he told us it was because the tourists were now flooding the other spots we were going to visit and that it would be better to go snorkelling first. I appreciate the gesture, but I wish they had told me that earlier. I did not sleep at all because I had to do my makeup at 3am as I assumed we would be going to the "dry" tourist spots first before snorkelling. C'est la vie I guess~

  • 11.30am: Lunch at Papa's Paradise Our driver then brought us to lunch. We stopped at this place called Papa's Paradise:

nusa penida day trip klook

  • 12pm: Head to Angel's Billabong The roads on the coastline of West Nusa Penida are all very bumpy, so I was really glad at this point that we decided to book this package rather than attempt to come here ourselves. Our package comes with an experienced driver that drives here daily, so he is used to driving here + knows how to best navigate Nusa Penida + how to drive on such bumpy roads + how to get to your destination!
  • 1.15pm: Angel's Billabong We reached Angel's Billabong at around 1.15pm, and after a quick walk down we reached the cliffs and pool:

  • 1.30pm: Broken Beach Located 5 minutes away from Angel's Billabong, you can actually walk there by foot.

  • 2.30pm: Kelingking Beach The journey by car between  Broken Beach  and Kelingking Beach took us about 30 minutes by car. Similar to how the road was on the way to  Angel's Billabong , the roads were super bumpy and shaky hahaha. Our driver wasn't fazed though and managed to get us to our destination safely.

nusa penida day trip klook

  • 3.30pm: Leave for Port After around an hour of taking pictures, we headed back to the Nusa Penida harbour. The journey there from Kelingking beach took around half an hour, and the roads were all super bumpy. To be honest I think the only bad thing about the whole trip was the bumpy roads haha
  • 4pm: Leave for Bali Island
  • 5pm: Reach Sanur Beach Our boat reached Sanur Beach just before the sun set.

  • 6pm: Reach dinner place I forgot to note down the name of this restaurant (as I was quite hungry lol) but the food was very good. The price was not cheap but not too expensive too.

  • 8pm: Reach DD Ubud Hotel

The Best Nusa Penida Day-Trip from Bali

Nusa Penida is the biggest of the three Nusa Islands (and most epic), located just off from mainland Bali. BUT did you know it’s only a 30-minute boat trip from the Sanur Harbor in Bali so it’s VERY easy to reach quickly for a Nusa Penida day trip if you are staying in Canggu, Seminyak, or Kuta. There are so many awesome things to do on Nusa Penida Island and there are two main different Nusa Penida day trip tours I suggest you look at.

a man swimming under a manta ray in the ocean.

Table of Contents

The Best Nusa Penida Day-Trips from Bali

In this blog post, I’m going to detail the two most popular Nusa Penida day trips from Bali. The first option is the Manta Ray Snorkel Tour . It’s honestly the most amazing experience to swim with gentle Giant Manta Rays. The tour takes you from Bali to Penida to snorkel with mantas but also to snorkel at other locations where you will find beautiful corals and even spot turtles. The second tour is the BEST of Nusa Penida Day Tour , which basically takes you to all of the most iconic viewpoints and beaches on Nusa Penida in one day.

BEST NUSA PENIDA TOURS!

These are the four most popular Nusa Penida Tours. I’ve done all four and they are AWESOME !

tree house nusa penida, nusa penida treehouse, bali treehouse accommoation, tree house villa bali, bamboo treehouse bali, rumah pohon treehouse, the treehouse bali, airbnb treehouse bali

  • Manta Ray Snorkel Tour (from Bali) – Most amazing experience to swim with Giant Manta’s.
  • Manta Ray Snorkel Tour (from Penida) This is the cheaper option if already on Nusa Penida.
  • BEST of Nusa Penida Day Tour (from Bali) Most booked day trip fro Bali to Penida with all highlights
  • Nusa Penida Car Rental with Driver : Great way to see all the highlights and tourist spots.

BEST NUSA PENIDA DAY TOURS

If you are staying in Bali.. take a day trip on a speedboat to explore the highlights of Nusa Penida. It takes just 35 minutes to get from Bali to Nusa Penida by speed boat. Yep, in just one day you can snorkel with Manta rays and visit lots of the best beaches and viewpoints.

Manta Ray Snorkeling Tour

Manta Ray Nusa Penida Tour (from Bali): Snorkeling with Manta Rays is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and one of the best wildlife encounters I’ve had in my life. The Manta Rays are majestic and very friendly. With a wingspan of 5m, these gentle giants cruise around you while you snorkel amongst them. The Nusa Penida Manta Ray Snorkel Tour includes pick up and drop off from your hotel in Bali and all transport and tickets included.

Nusa Penida Highlights Tour

Nusa Penida Highlights Tour : Get picked-up from your Bali hotel, take a 35-minute fast boat to Nusa Penida and then visit the most popular viewpoints, beaches and snorkel spots on the island. This small Nusa Penida Highlights Tour group tour is the most highly reviewed day trip for Nusa Penida Island. You’ll visit all the most popular spots and can request certain viewpoints on your itinerary. Places you will visit are sites like the ones listed below:

Angel’s Billabong

  • Kelingking T-Rex Beach

Broken Beach

  • Rumah Pohon Treehouse
  • Snorkeling at Crystal Bay
  • Thousand Island Viewpoint

Okay, that was a the brief overview of the two tours I will detail in this article. Below, I’m going to go into the exact details of what each tour involves as I have personally done them both!

Nusa Penida Day Trip – Snorkeling with Manta Rays

This is a tour you simply cannot afford to pass on. I know for some people they are on a budget in Bali or they prefer not to book tours but I guarantee you, it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience to float around with Giant Manta Rays.

  • Swim with the massive reef manta rays of Nusa Penida
  • Visit Crystal Bay, Atuh Beach, Diamond Beach
  • Snorkel in scenic spots around Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan
  • Enjoy a delicious beachside lunch overlooking a white sand beach
  • Explore some of the most diverse reefs on the planet

The tour includes lunch, and several other snorkeling spots near Manta Point where you can see turtles, corals and tropical fish. You’ll also cruise through a few beaches on top of the Manta Point snorkel.

As soon as we plunged into the water, we found ourselves looking directly at a huge Manta Ray, one of the most impressive beings of the sea. It was completely surprising, I assumed we’d be hanging around waiting for them. More than five of these Manta Rays were making repeated circuits in the bay, delighting the cluster of snorkelers. Unlike turtles or fish that tend to swim away at the presence of humans, the Manta Rays were consistently interactive, circling back time and again. They would often approach you directly and then quickly swerve off to one side at the very last moment.

Snorkeling with Manta Rays Availability

You can use this calendar below to see the availability of tours. It’s important to book this tour in advance during high season as it can be a very popular activity on Nusa Penida and they try and limit the number of boats in the water.

Gamat Bay Snorkeling

As part of the Manta Ray Snorkeling tour , you will get to snorkel at Gamat Bay aswell. We jumped off the boat, and immediately realized the water at Gamat Bay is much colder than at Manta Point and Crystal Bay. I’m not sure why that is. The second thing we noticed was the incredible coral structures and rock formations beneath the surface. The depth ranged from a few meters closer to shore all the way down to perfect free-diving depth of 5-20 meters.

Our guide told us this is where you can see a turtle if you are lucky. We looked long and hard and finally, we found a turtle who let us chill near him for ten minutes as he went about his business. The water clarity at Gamat was perfect!

BEST of Nusa Penida Tour: Epic Day Trip

This BEST of Nusa Penida Day Tour from Bali via fast-boat is the best way to see Nusa Penida in just one day. The itinerary looks like the following:

  • Hotel pickup by car
  • Fast-boat to Nusa Penida
  • 4-5 Sightseeing spots on Nusa Penida
  • Fast-boat to Bali
  • Hotel drop-off by car

nusa penida day trip klook

The BEST of Nusa Penida Day Tour is the most convenient way to see Nusa Penida in just one day. There are three set spots on the itinerary but you can customize the schedule and spots to visit by discussing with the tour guide and tour company, which is quite important. You may have some bucketvlist items that you want to guarantee that you see so just discuss that in advance and they will make it happen!

Below I’m going to detail each of the spots on the itinerary and/or those spots you can add to the itinerary by customizing it!

Kelingking, kelingking secret point, kelingking point, kelingking beach nusa penida, kelingking nusa penida, kelingking secret point nusa penida

Atuh Beach is one of the most picturesque and beautiful beaches on Nusa Penida, an island off the southeastern coast of Bali, Indonesia. It’s s a stunning white sand beach surrounded by the huge cliffs and remarkable rock formations. An arch sits directly out from the shore while several islets string off in the distance.

Diamond Beach

Diamond Beach, found on the far eastern edge of Nusa Penida Island in Indonesia, is famous for its incredible natural scenery. The beach showcases an extraordinary setting marked by clean white sands, transparent turquoise waters, and high cliffs. The beach’s distinct rock structures, which look like shining diamonds, give this beach its unique name. A carved staircase descending the cliffs allows entry to the beach, presenting stunning wide-angle views on the way down.

But the key feature here is the rock shaped like a diamond in the shallow waters. After all, I think this diamond-like rock is what gives the beach its name.

Nusa Penida Treehouse (Rumah Pohon)

The Tree House (Rumah Pohon) on  Nusa Penida  has become something of an iconic spot. It is perched up on the mountain at Thousand Island (Pulau Seribu) viewpoint near Atuh Beach.

It is part of the Thousand Island viewpoint area costing only 10,000 rupiah to park and enter, which is less than $1 USD. The best part about this treehouse is that it is actually a house and you can rent it out for pretty cheap considering how popular this spot has become and how insane the view is.

Teletubbies Hill

Teletubbies Hill is a great spot to understand just how diverse the landscapes are on Nusa Penida and it was incredibly interesting flying the drone here scoping out all the different contours, valleys and canyons in this region.

Angel’s Billabong is one of the magical spots to visit on Nusa Penida. A crystal clear tide pool cascades into the ocean on the east coast of Nusa Penida. Angel’s Billabong is an enchanting natural wonder located on the island of Nusa Penida, Bali, Indonesia. This unique rock formation, nestled on the island’s southwestern coast, forms a tranquil natural infinity pool that overlooks the vast Indian Ocean. During low tide, the pool’s crystal clear water provides a safe and serene spot for swimming, revealing a mesmerizing underwater world.

Broken Beach is an incredible little cove on Nusa Penida island. The highlight of the cove and the reason it is called Broken Beach is due to the archway that wraps around the bay allowing water to flow in and out from the ocean. Broken Beach is also one of the spots on the  Ultimate Nusa Penida Day Trip Tour from Bali .

The arch at Broken Beach has been formed over many, many years and is now a true spectacle. From above the cove appears almost circular and closed in, however, at eye level the arch is quite high.

Kelingking Beach

The Instagram famous coastal cliffscape, which truly does look like a T-rex doesn’t disappoint. I still remember the moment I laid eyes on Kelingking Beach. I watched the crystal clear water slowly form into a wave before crashing below us, in what seemed like slow motion.

Nusa Penida has so many amazing views making it hard to pick ‘the best one’. But when the cliffs form in the shape of a Tyrannosaurus Rex at Kelingking Beach it is bound to be a crowd favorite. Kelingking Beach on Nusa Penida is one of the MOST epic spots in all of Indonesia and worth voyaging out to visit from Bali.

Crystal Bay

Crystal Bay is probably the most popular beach on Nusa Penida for a number of reasons. It is the best sunset beach, facing directly west. This alone makes it a winner for people trying to have a sunset beer and watch the sun go down.

It’s also the jump-off spot for snorkel tours and is only a 30-minute drive from the main port, Toyapakeh. Most importantly, unlike many of the crazy beaches on Penida, you can snorkel and swim with relaxing conditions.

Of course, if you have more time than just a day trip you can check out my blog post about my 27 favorite things to do on Nusa Penida and enjoy exploring the island.

TOP 3 PLACES TO STAY ON NUSA PENIDA

I’ve written a massive, detailed guide about the Best Places To Stay on Nusa Penida …. BUT If you just want me three favorites right now, here they are!

a pool with lounge chairs and a thatched roof.

  • My TOP Pick: Atalaya Villas – Bungalow Style, Beautiful Palm Trees, Great Location.
  • Beach Bungalow: Santen Bungalows – Stay on the beach, Best Value for Money
  • Luxury: Nay Palad Hideaway – Oceanfront, Beach Access, Beautiful Pool

How to get to the Nusa Islands

There are three main options to get to Nusa Penida depending on your budget and how many logistics you want to manage. Here are the three options with the cheapest first:

  • Book your ticket:   Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Lembongan – Book a regular ferry that leaves from Sanur to Nusa Penida on the reliable website 12go . You then need to moped or taxi across to Nusa Penida via another ferry/boat.
  • Book a fast boat: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida – This option is great as you go direct from Bali to Penida without having to stop in Lembongan. This option is only slightly more expensive than stopping in Lembongan. This is my favorite option of the three and can be booked on Klook .
  • Book a fast boat with hotel pick-up: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida – This option includes a fast boat from Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida but also includes pick-up from your hotel in Bali in a van. This option from GetYourGuide is a bit more expensive but takes all the hassle out of the transit from Bali to Nusa Penida.

Complete Nusa Penida Island Guide

Table of Contents

A trip to the Land of Gods Bali in Indonesia is never complete without exploring its tourist-famous southeastern island, Nusa Penida. The island district of Klungklung Regency may be small, but it’s filled with breathtaking attractions like beaches, dive sites, and viewpoints.

Kelingking Beach is one of the most popular attractions at Nusa Penida Island

Some of its many gems are Kelingking Beach, Broken Beach, Angel Billabong, Crystal Bay, Diamond Beach, Atuh Beach, Suwehan Beach, Peguyangan Waterfall, Tembeling Forest, and Segening Waterfall.

How to get to Nusa Penida

And because it’s popular, the ports going to the island never miss a big crowd daily. To get to Nusa Penida, you must take a fast-service ferry from Sanur Harbor. Don’t worry about not getting a ticket, as many ticketing offices already exist. To get around the island of Nusa Penida, it’s best to hire or rent a car.

Book a Nusa Penida Day Trip via KLOOK

To skip the hassle, we recommend booking your Nusa Penida day tour via Klook, which pretty much arranges everything for you, like what we did during our recent Bali trip with Cebu Pacific. Round Trip ferry tickets, car charter service to and from every destination, entrance fees to almost all attractions, fuel, a tour guide to better appreciate the places, and even free lunch if you opt to include it in your package.

The guides from Klook were really accommodating and attentive to our questions

Klook offers private tours and joiner tours. Since during this trip it was just a friend and me, we decided to get the joiner tour to save money. We really enjoyed the whole trip because we didn’t have to think about the trip arrangements anymore since it was all taken care of by Klook, and we just had to show up at our meet-up place. After the tour, we were also dropped off at the same place just a few steps away from our hotel.

You will be picked up and dropped off for private tours from and to your hotel. Very convenient! Since Klook has been a trusted travel, tour, and activities provider, you can assure you are safe all the time. You can even read reviews from other travelers who have availed of the Nusa Penida tour package.

Here are the inclusions of the package we booked:

  • Admission to attractions
  • Bottled drinking water
  • Round-trip transfers to and from your hotel
  • Basic English-speaking driver/guide
  • Shared boat rides between Sanur Harbor and Nusa Penida (worth IDR300,000)
  • Local tax (IDR25,000)
  • Private transfer on Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida Day Tour with Snorkeling Sample Itinerary

For this trip, we wanted to also experience the marine life of Nusa Penida, which the island is also famous for. Depending on the season, you can add this to your Klook booking for about $20.

Taking the fast-service ferry at Sanur Harbor to Nusa Penida

We chose the West Nusa Penida day tour, which started at around 6:30AM when the driver picked us up from a nearby convenience store from our hotel, our assigned meeting place. We traveled to Sanur Harbor, and from there, we were guided to the fast-service ferry we were taking to go to the island.

The ferry ride to Nusa Penida took less than an hour

It took less than an hour to get to Nusa Penida, and it was smooth and hassle-free. We were led to an area where guests could prepare before diving or snorkeling. There are showers and changing areas available, which you can utilize after the activity. If you’re not doing this activity, you’ll go to where your car charter service is parked and begin your land tour.

This was us on the speedboat en route to the snorkeling areas; the equipment was provided and included in the package

Not too long, we started to jump in our speed boat leading to the snorkeling areas. The first stop was Manta Bay. The boatmen and our guide were so happy because, after long weeks of no sighting, we saw one manta ray and swam with it!

Manta ray sighting at Manta Bay

Next, we went to Gamat Bay, Crystal Bay, and Wall Bay. We spent about 2-3 hours of magical underwater experience, swimming and exploring the island’s beautiful corals and fishes. This is definitely worth the try.

Right before lunchtime, we went back to the mainland. We took our service, and it first dropped us off at an eatery for our free lunch. After lunch, we started touring around. The spots aren’t far from each other, and you’ll just have to go on a short walk to get to them.

1. Kelingking Beach

Kelingking Beach and its famous T-rex-shaped cliff

One of the most popular stops for Nusa Penida tours, this scenic beach offers a jaw-dropping view from its clifftop. The huge cliff takes the shape of a T-Rex, and the ocean looks pristine with its white sand and different shades of blue water.

2. Broken Beach

Even though the day was gloomy during our tour, the view was still breathtaking

Our next stop was Broken Beach which is popular for its archway cove that leads to the ocean, allowing the waves to come in and out majestically. While swimming at the beach is not allowed, you can take as many photos as possible from its viewpoint.

3. Angel Billabong

Angel Billabong Photo courtesy of Klook

Angel Billabong’s crystal emerald waters, which look like a natural infinity pool, mainly draw tourists because they give a panoramic ocean view.

At around 4 or 5 in the afternoon, we were brought back to the port to return to Sanur Harbor. Then at 6PM, we were dropped off at the convenience store and returned to our hotel.

NUSA PENIDA DAY TRIP – DO IT YOURSELF

Can you do a day trip to Nusa Penida? Absolutely, and this is what the section here below is all about.

If you prefer to visit Nusa Penida Island without a tour, read on to discover 3 different Nusa Penida One Day Trip Itineraries that I recommend.

Or perhaps you plan to spend a few days on the island and want the full scope of all the best things to do, so be sure to check out my Nusa Penida Travel Guide linked below.

DIY ITINERARY #1

Here is an overview of the DIY Nusa Penida One Day Itinerary #1

  • Crystal Bay
  • Angels Billabong

CRYSTAL BAY

Crystal Bay Nusa Penida is a palm tree haven and an awesome snorkeling location on the west coast of Nusa Penida Island.

Crystal Bay is one of the best beaches to explore and the perfect spot to begin your DIY Nusa Penida trip!

The drive towards Crystal Bay is an experience in itself, passing through local villages and palm tree lined roads, eventually coming to a dead end on the beachfront.

There are a number of beach shack cafes, traditional temples, a coconut palm tree forest, and colorful umbrellas along the shoreline at Crystal Bay, all of which overlook a gorgeous beach cove and a nearby rocky island.

Just offshore, there is a colorful reef system beneath the surface of Crystal Bay Nusa Penida, a very popular spot for snorkeling with all sorts of fish, turtles, and other sea critters.

ANGELS BILLABONG

Angels Billabong is one of Nusa Penida’s most popular attractions.

This natural infinity pool is framed by rock cliffs and hangs out over the ocean and it’s a must-see location on your day trip to Nusa Penida!

The Angels Billabong can be found on the farmost western tip of Nusa Penida’s coastline.

When you arrive at Angel’s Billabong there is a parking lot on the cliffs you will be asked to pay a parking fee of 10,000 IDR.

There are signposts leading the way down the steps to Angel’s Billabong, so you won’t get lost.

The rocks are quite sharp and rugged getting down into the infinity pool at Angels Billabong, but once you step in, the surface of the rocks under the water is smooth and easy to walk on.

Due to its recent popularity, the best time to visit Angels Billabong is early morning to avoid crowds.

BROKEN BEACH

Broken Beach is one of many awesome locations on the island and it is not to be missed on your DIY day trip Nusa Penida.

A naturally carved-out bridge stretches over turquoise waters that flow in and out of the archway, hence the name Broken Beach.

Broken Beach is located right next to Angels Billabong so you can combine these two locations on the same trip.

Although you can’t go swimming at Broken Beach, it is such an unreal setting in itself. The ocean water flows into a natural bowl that is surrounded by towering cliffs.

You can take a panoramic walk all the way around Broken Beach Bali to several different viewpoints offering incredible views of this hole in the cliff.

Perched on the cliffs at Broken Beach you can also find small warungs for a nasi goreng, morning coffee, or a refreshing coconut!

KELINGKING BEACH

Kelingking Beach in Nusa Penida is one of the most amazing places I have ever been to and it’s the best location for sunset to finish off your one day trip Nusa Penida.

Kelingking Beach, also known as Kelingking Secret Point, is located on the west coast of Nusa Penida Island.

The reason why Kelingking Beach is such a popular location is that the cliffs form the shape of a T-Rex.

The head of the T-Rex can be seen on the left of the bay and the body and tail wrap around to the right.

Access to Kelingking Beach is possible but explore at your own risk.

There are stairs and railings made out of timber that lead down the spine of Keling King to the beach, though don’t completely rely on this and take your time when descending down to the shoreline.

Kelingking Beach has multiple viewpoints around the edge of the cliffs, offering spectacular views up and down the coastline of Nusa Penida.

Atuh Beach is one of Nusa Penida’s most iconic locations, featuring a large cove with crystalline waters, golden sands, and a coconut palm forest.

Atuh Beach is located on the farmost eastern point of Nusa Penida Island. From the main town of Toya Pakeh, it’s approximately a 45-minute drive to reach Atuh Beach.

Pantai Atuh Beach can be accessed from either the left-hand side or the right-hand side of the cliffs via the concrete steps that are cut into the side of the mountain.

The entrance fee you will have to pay to visit Atuh Beach is 10,000 IDR.

It’s the perfect spot to go for a swim to cool off and beach bum under one of many straw umbrellas that line the shoreline.

If you’re looking for a fun-fuelled couple of hours on your day trip, be sure not to miss Atuh Beach on your itinerary – I guarantee you will enjoy it just as much as I did!

DIAMOND BEACH

Diamond Beach Nusa Penida is hands down the most amazing beach I have ever been to, and that’s saying something!

A glistening white sand beach surrounded by verdant cliffs and turquoise water, Diamond Beach is a hard-to-beat destination and one of the best places to visit.

When you arrive at the car park you will have to pay a small entrance fee of 10,000 IDR to the parking lot attendant sitting in his booth before making your way down the stairs to Diamond Beach.

The way down to Diamond Beach Penida only takes around ten minutes before emerging on the sandy shoreline.

A small warung resides down on Diamond Beach where you can buy cold refreshments and local dishes such as mie goreng and nasi goreng for as little as $3 to $5.

You can also have a turn on the Diamond Beach Nusa Penida swing which is strung up between two coconut palms down by the beach.

RUMAH POHON TREE HOUSE

Ruma Pohon Tree House has become very popular thanks to Instagram and it’s one of the best places to visit on your day trip to Nusa Penida!

At the jump-off point, you will find a small ticket office where you will have to pay 5,000 IDR for the entrance ticket to Rumah Pohon Tree House.

The hike down the ridge takes no more than five or ten minutes to the first viewpoint that overlooks the bay known as Thousand Islands (Pulau Seribu).

Once you are satisfied with marveling at Thousand Island viewpoint, continue the adventure further down the ridge and you will see the Rumah Pohon Tree House on your left-hand side.

To capture the perfect Instagram photo of the Nusa Penida Tree House you can stand on the hill on the right-hand side of the track to get the best angle.

TELETUBBIES HILL

Bukit Teletubbies (Teletubbies Hill) in Nusa Penida is best known for its lush green rolling hills and incredible viewpoints that overlook the entire Nusa Penida Island.

Bukit Teletubbies is located in the southern mountain ranges on Nusa Penida Island.

There are half a dozen different viewpoints at Bukit Teletubbies, and on a clear day, you can see the neighboring island of Lombok and the almighty  Mount Rinjani , the second-largest volcano in Indonesia.

The best way to explore Bukit Teletubbies (Teletubbies Hill Nusa Penida) is on foot. Take a short hike to get a different perspective of this incredible landscape from nearby peaks.

GOA GIRI PUTRI CAVE

Goa Giri Putri Cave is one of Nusa Penida’s most underrated tourist spots but not to be missed.

There is a small car park at the entrance and here you will also be asked to wear a sarong which you can rent for 5,000 IDR and the entrance fee to the temple is 20,000 IDR.

Take the winding staircase midway up the mountain and you’ll be greeted by a man that will bless you with some holy water on the forehead.

I was absolutely jaw-dropped at how insanely huge the Pura Goa Giri Putri cave is, my guess is 300 meters long and 15 meters tall.

We wandered deeper into the Pura Goa Giri Putri cave and stumbled upon a small group of locals sitting in prayer around an altar.

Incense filled the air and we pretty much went unnoticed as we walked around the cave.

Follow the pathway to the end of the Goa Giri Putri cave to a viewpoint of a small village in the lush green mountainside.

You can exit the cave here or head back the same way you came to the parking lot.

DIY ITINERARY #3

Here is an overview of the DIY Nusa Penida One Day Itinerary #3

  • Manta Point Snorkeling
  • Banah Cliff Viewpoint
  • Tembeling Beach & Lagoons
  • Peguyangan Blue Stairs & Waterfall

MANTA POINT SNORKELING

Snorkeling at Manta Point Nusa Penida is one of the most epic experiences you could ever have.

These underwater giants are incredibly humble and to be able to swim with them is a moment you will never forget!

I recommend booking your Manta Point snorkeling tour the day before to secure your spot on the boat. The tour starts between 7:00 am – 8:00 am and finishes around 12:00 pm.

The tour includes all snorkeling equipment and it will stop at three different snorkeling sites – Manta Point, Toya Pakeh Wall, and Crystal Bay.

These majestic creatures are absolutely incredible! They glide effortlessly through the ocean and are really friendly to swim with.

The manta rays at Manta Point can be quite intimidating to begin with due to their body size of up to 5 meters, though you will soon realize they are harmless, humble giants.

Snorkeling at Manta Point is the best way to begin your DIY Nusa Penida trip!

BANAH CLIFF VIEWPOINT

Banah Cliff Nusa is one of the best viewpoints along the southwest coastline of Nusa Penida Island!

There are not just not one but two incredible viewpoints at Banah Cliff.

At the jump-off point to the right is the panoramic view and to the left is the official Banah Cliff.

The panoramic viewpoint at Banah Cliff Nusa Penida faces west and offers extreme views of surrounding cliffs, perched high above the ocean.

On a clear day, you can actually see the tail of the T-Rex at Keling King Beach.

Be very careful when taking photos at Banah Cliff as there is no safety barrier to protect you from falling hundreds of feet to the ground. Know your limits.

The other viewpoint at Banah Cliff faces east and offers an awesome viewpoint of an arched rock island just off the coastline. Again, please watch your step along these rocky cliffs.

TEMBELING BEACH & LAGOONS

Tembeling features a number of cool things to see including pristine white sand beaches, tropical rainforests, natural lagoons, hidden caves, and cliff-jumping spots.

The main attraction at Tembeling Nusa Penida is the freshwater blue lagoon nestled in the Tembeling Forest.

This freshwater natural pool is the perfect spot for a swim on the way down to Tembeling Beach.

You can also discover the hidden cave and secret beach just a short 2-minute walk from the blue lagoon through the Tembeling Forest.

There is also a freshwater jacuzzi pool that the locals have creatively built on the edge of the cliffs.

And of course, there’s Tembeling Beach where a number of tidal pools can be found to take a dip but swimming in the waves here is not recommended.

PEGUYANGAN BLUE STAIRS & WATERFALL

Last but not least on your DIY Nusa Penida trip, the ultimate adventure awaits at Peguyangan Waterfall and the Instafamous Blue Stairs.

At the jump-off point for Peguyanngan Waterfall, you will have to pay a small parking fee of 5,000 IDR.

There are 750 blue stairs that are impressively constructed into the side of the cliff giving access to Peguyangan Waterfall.

There are several viewpoints that make for great photo opportunities as you make your way down to Peguyangan Waterfall.

After a 20-minute hike down the blue stairs, you’ll arrive at the sacred water temple that has four waterspouts.

The waterfall itself is not your common 50-meter meter waterfall, like those you will find in  Bali , but rather a waterspout between a crack in a rock where crystal clear water flows out into tiered rock pools and over the cliff edge into the ocean.

NUSA PENIDA ISLAND – FAQ

Here are some quick answers to the most frequently asked questions from first-time visitors.

HOW TO GET TO NUSA PENIDA?

Bali to nusa penida:.

Fast Boats operate daily to Nusa Penida from Sanur Harbor in Southeast Bali. You can book the fast boat online  in advance to guarantee the lowest price.

The fast boat ticket to the Nusa Penida also includes a hotel pick-up from your accommodation in Bali and a drop-off directly to the pier at Sanur Beach Port.

The boat trip takes approximately 45 minutes from Bali to Nusa Penida Island.

NUSA LEMBONGAN TO NUSA PENIDA:

You can also take a boat to Nusa Penida from Nusa Lembongan if you happen to be exploring this island first.

A boat from Nusa Lembongan to Nusa Penida will cost you around 50,000 IDR.

You can organize the boat via your accommodation on Nusa Lembongan or simply head to the main beach port on Lembongan Island and ask one of the boat companies located down on the beachfront.

Alternatively, you can book a Nusa Penida day trip from Nusa Lembongan, and I’ll tell you more in the following sections.

nusa penida boat 2

HOW TO GET AROUND NUSA PENIDA?

Nusa Penida is quite a large island and it can take up to one hour to get from one side of the island to the other.

The best mode of transport to visit all the tourist spots in Nusa Penida is by scooter.

When you arrive at Toya Pakeh harbor in Nusa Penida there are a number of scooter rental shops on the beachfront that will be able to sort you out with some wheels.

I paid 70,000 IDR per day for a scooter rental that came with a full tank of gas so you can expect to pay something around this price.

Be sure to get a helmet as an extra precaution for riding on the roads in Nusa Penida as they are not very well maintained.

CAN YOU TAKE A NUSA PENIDA DAY TRIP FROM ULUWATU?

The ferry from Bali to Nusa Penida departs from Sanur Port , which is in Denpasar, and you’ll have to take a taxi to get there.

However, when joining a day trip to Nusa Penida , transportation is included and you can let the guide know where your hotel is, and they will pick you up, which is so convenient.

This is the best option when it comes to taking a Uluwatu to Nusa Penida day trip.

The same applies to Nusa Dua to Nusa Penida day trip.

COST OF A NUSA PENIDA DAY TRIP

The cost of a Nusa Penida 1 day trip from Bali depends on the option you go for – Let me clarify here below.

NUSA PENIDA DAY TRIP

A day trip around Nusa Penida (whether you choose the Nusa Penida West or Nusa Penida East tour) will cost you about $35 per person, including transportation and the tour guide.

The catch? These tours start in Nusa Penida, so you’ll have to get there from Bali on your own and pay the ferry tickets.

NUSA PENIDA DAY TRIP FROM BALI

On the other hand, when booking an All-inclusive Nusa Penida day trip from Sanur, you can expect to pay around $100 per person.

While this is more expensive, it includes the ferry ticket from Bali and back, lunch, and the entrance fees to all attractions, making it much more worth it if you ask me!

Click here below to see this day trip to Nusa Penida from Nusa Lembongan.

NUSA PENIDA DAY TRIP FROM LEMBONGAN

Nusa Penida day trips from Lembongan cost about $37 per person, including transfers from Lembongan, snorkeling sessions, and a mangrove trip.

Note that, usually, Nusa Penida tours from Lembongan do not include any sightseeing but rather snorkeling only, so keep that in mind.

Hi Jonny, great guide! We are heading to Nusa Penida from Lembongan and wondering if we can book tours/drivers upon arrival at Toya Pakeh harbor? Thanks!

Hi Mori, absolutely yes. As soon as you arrive in Toyah Pakeh there are dozens of locals that will be able to take you around the island for the day! Have an awesome time!

We are a young couple and we have only one day, which one will you recommend, #1 or #2?

Hey Daniel, #1 would be my personal pick! Enjoy 🙂

Hi Jonny We are a family of four(all adults). would like to have a non-guided 1-day tour. What do you suggest?

Kelingking Beach, Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida: Island Guide and 2 Days Itinerary

While we can agree that Bali deserves all the hype it gets, there’s much more to see outside of Bali. Just 30 minutes away, one can find the beautiful island of Nusa Penida.

Nusa Penida is located southeast of Bali. It belongs to the Klungkung Regency district, along with Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan. Nusa Penida isn’t overly developed yet, which is its charm. It has little tourist infrastructure, but there are nice guesthouses and villas, seaside bars and restaurants where you can chill and drink, and of course amazing sights: cliff-side views, fine beaches, and snorkeling & dive spots .

Over the past years, there is an influx of tourists coming to Nusa Penida. A lot of these people are day trippers from Bali, off to see the Insta-famous Kelingking Beach.

Please enable JavaScript

P.S. If you’re planning a trip to Bali, don’t forget to read about our Essential Guide to Bali and our 6 Days Itinerary in Bali .

Things to know about Nusa Penida

Sanur port to nusa penida, by scooter/motorbike, by booking a tour, where to stay, where to eat, snorkeling tour, kelingking beach and other beaches, diamond beach and thousand islands, teletubbies hill and temple, 2 days itinerary in nusa penida, reminders and tips, what to read next:.

Here are some of the things you need to know about Nusa Penida.

  • Nusa Penida is easily accessible from Bali. There are different ports with passenger ferry bound for Nusa Penida.
  • It can be visited on a day trip. If you want to fully explore the island, allot 2-3 days.
  • There are limited ATMs in the island and hardly any establishments accept credit card. It’s best to bring enough cash with you.

How to Get to Nusa Penida

Getting to Nusa Penida is quite easy. There are different ports you can go to:

  • Sanur Beach

The easiest & most popular way to get to Nusa Penida is via Sanur Port. This was also our way to Nusa Penida. From our hotel in Ubud, we took a taxi to Sanur Port. We got tickets from Angel’s Billabong Fast Cruise.

There are 3 different ferry lines plying this route: Maruti Express, Angel’s Billabong Fast Cruise and Mola-Mola Express.

From Sanur Port, travel time to Nusa Penida is 30 minutes.

  • Ferry ticket costs 150,000 IDR one-way (P500 / $10).
  • Schedule starts at 7AM to 5PM

We recommend taking the first ferry trip at 7 or 7:30M to make the most of your time.

You can book your ferry tickets upon arrival in Sanur Port. You can also book via 12Go . It’s a bit more expensive but it will allow you to book in advance. As for us, the ferry tickets were included in the 2-day tour that we booked and we even got a small discount.

Reminder : Make sure to wear flip flops and shorts because you will have to wade into the water to get into the ferry.

How to Get Around

Kelingking Beach in Nusa Penida

One important thing you should know is that the roads in Nusa Penida are in awful condition. It’s mostly rough roads with a lot of pot holes and some of them are very steep. Take this in mind when planning how you’re going to explore the island.

There is public transport but it’s limited. Taxis are hard to come by.

Here are your options on how to get around.

Once you get off at the port, you can easily rent a motorbike for the day. The cost is similar to Bali (Rp 75,000 IDR (P250 / $5).

  • Make sure to top up your gas at the stations near the port since there are fewer stations further inland.
  • Rent a motorbike only if you’re confident in driving.

You can find different packaged tours to Nusa Penida, with a pre-arranged itinerary depending on how long you will stay. This includes private car transport (good up to 4 people).

  • Our recommended tour service is by Linda Nyoman . He gave us a 2-day schedule and we’d customized it to add a snorkeling tour for an additional fee. Our tour included round-trip ferry tickets from Bali to Nusa Penida, private transport via van, snorkeling tour and lunch meals. The whole tour cost 1.2M IDR (P4400 / $90) for 2 people. Contact : email [email protected].
  • You can also book via Klook .

We recommend booking a tour as it’s easy and comfortable. If you’re in a group of people, it’s also cost efficient.

There are homestays and bungalows in Nusa Penida. Prices are a little more expensive compared to Bali, but not much.

Here are some of the most recommended ones:

Bintang Bungalow in Nusa Penida

  • La Roja Bungalows . One of the best resorts in Nusa Penida, with stylish rooms and a pool. Book via Agoda .
  • Bintang Bungalow . Located near Crystal Bay, with stylish rooms and a pool. Book via Agoda .
  • Bintang Penida Resort . A newly built resort, with stylish rooms and a pool. Book via Agoda .

We recommend booking in advance.

It’s easy to find warungs in Nusa Penida where you can get reasonably priced local dishes and even smoothie bowls. There area also sea-front bars and restaurants, where you can enjoy a drink while watching the sunset.

Here are some restaurants you should check out:

  • Amok Sunset Bar and Restaurant . Located in the west coast, this place is on the off-beaten path. Here you can enjoy drinks at a pool or dinner at a treehouse.

Our 2-day trip in Nusa Penida

We’re aware that most people only do a day trip to Nusa Penida. However, another blogger advised staying at least 2 days to see the Thousand Islands and Diamond Beach in particular.

As said above, we booked a package which includes a 2-day tour in Nusa Penida. The original itinerary includes the best tourist spots in Nusa Penida including Kelingking Beach, Angel’s Billabong and Crystal Beach. We asked to include a snorkeling tour, since I wanted to see the Underwater Buddha Temple.

From the port, our local guide fetched us in a van and we immediately started the tour.

The snorkeling tour includes four stops: Manta Point, Gamat Bay, Underwater Buddha Temple and GT Point.

We started the tour early in the morning, at about 9AM. Kat wasn’t feeling well, so I was the only one who signed up. I joined a group of tourists from Thailand whom I befriended.

Island hopping in Nusa Penida

Our first stop was Manta Point , which is a swimming ground for manta rays. The area was crowded with tourists so it was easy to bump into someone in the water.

I only saw one manta ray and felt sorry for it. I think that maybe it only wanted to swim in peace, since it tried to escape from everyone taking photos.

Manta Point was in the news for a while for waste problem, after a viral video of a diver swimming in garbage. I did see a few plastic cups floating in the water but otherwise the area was clean, so it’s probably that a clean-up was done after the story.

Manta Point in Nusa Penida

Next was Gamat Bay . This is filled with beautiful corals and fishes, so it’s perfect for snorkeling. Also, the water was clear. There was a particular area with strong currents that could easily pull a person away, so I had to be careful. Compared to Manta Point, there were only few tourists here so it was easy to appreciate the aquatic life underneath.

Gamat Bay, Nusa Penida

Our third stop is the one I was most excited about – the Underwater Buddha Temple .This is a recent underwater art exhibit, made up of a 2.5-meter tall Buddha statue surrounded by smaller statues. There is also a huge steel chair in the middle where you can sit and take photos.

Our boatman dropped us off in the site and said he’d waited on the other side. I thought this was easy. To my surprise, after jumping in the water, the current immediately dragged me away. I passed by a long rope which I held onto. I tried going against the current but I wasn’t moving forward. I saw the underwater temple fleetingly — I was struggling to keep afloat. I tried to go closer to the statue but my swimming prowess apparently wasn’t enough.

I grabbed onto another rope and pulled myself to another boat. From there, I went back to the water and let the current take me to the other side where our boat guide was waiting.

Underwater Buddha Temple in Nusa Penida

Our final stop for the snorkeling tour was the GT Point . GT stands for Giant Trevely, which is a type of big fish. Initially, I thought that it refers to Giant Tuna. The water here was too cold — I was shivering so I immediately went back to the boat. I didn’t see much, though I saw big fishes from afar.

Kelingking Beach is the most popular tourist spot in Nusa Penida. It’s a beach cove surrounded by a dinosaur-shaped cliff, which is why it’s also called T-Rex Island. The beach below has fine white sand and turquoise water. It may seem gentle from above, but the currents along the shore are strong and can knock you off your feet even if you’re just knee-deep in the water. Every year, a few people get swept away.

It takes about 30 minutes to get down to the beach, and the climb back up is no joke as well. The path is narrow, with bamboo posts as handrails.

We decided to stay at the viewpoint above. It was heavy with day trippers, but the view was wonderful and it’s easy to take good pictures.

Kelingking Beach, Nusa Penida

Next are  Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong . These two spots are only walking distance from each other. From the parking area, I followed the pathway for several minutes before getting to Angel’s Billabong. Kat still wasn’t feeling well, so she stayed behind.

Angel’s Billabong is a natural tidal pool surrounded by rock cliffs.

Angel's Billabong in Nusa Penida

Further ahead is the Broken Beach. It’s an arched tunnel over the ocean, which allows the water to flow into a pool.

Broken Beach was nice, but there wasn’t anything much to do except swim in the tidal pool and take pictures. I didn’t see any beach in the Broken Beach so I’m curious why the call it that. I wish Kat were with me, but I didn’t think she’d like the long walk.

Broken Beach, Nusa Penida

Our last stop for the day was Crystal Bay . Compared the the beaches we’d seen for today, this is the most commercial one. Crystal Beach is a long stretch of beach filled with people lying in lounge chairs and beanie bags under huge umbrellas. There is an islet nearby, but it looks like it requires a long swim or a small boat at the least.

I saw a set of broken stairs on the left part of the beach area and went there. The route was almost covered with bushes and there was nobody else going this way. It’s like Mary and the Secret Garden. The stairs dwindled down to an empty beach. There was a couple walking along the shore but no one else was there. It was quiet. I sat down and wondered why there weren’t many people here. Perhaps it’s too far for some people to hike.

Hidden beach in Crystal Beach, Nusa Penida

After the whole-day tour, our driver dropped us off in a bungalow where we’d booked for a night. A fan room with an outdoor bathroom with open ceiling, some potted plants and grass beside the shower. We appreciate the hospitality of the caretaker who welcomed us. Our place is walking distance from a minimart and a few eateries. I pampered Kat and bought her food.

We ended our first day in Nusa Penida with hot noodles and curry.

Nusa Penida – Day 2

We left early from our bungalow near the port area, but it was still a long drive to our first stop for the day: Atuh Beach and Diamond Beach. The weather was great and there were blue skies.

Atuh Beach is on the left side, while Diamond Beach is on the right.

When we arrived, Atuh Beach was on low tide and it didn’t seem inviting, so we didn’t go down to the beach.

Atuh Beach in Nusa Penida

Instead, we explored the cliff overlooking Diamond Beach, an isolated beach cove surrounded by cliffs. During our visit, the stairs going down wasn’t finished yet, so we stayed atop the cliff ( Update 2019 : the stairs is now fully done, so you can get to the Diamond Beach). The view here was great and it was a breath of fresh air.

Diamond Beach in Nusa Penida

We walked up to the small house on top of the cliff. We took pictures of the islets near Diamond Beach and the stone arc near Atuh Beach. The surrounding ocean was clear, we could see the seagrass.

Atuh Cliff, Nusa Penida

A few minutes away from Atuh Beach are the neighboring viewpoints called the Tree House (locally known as Rumah Pohon) and Thousand Islands .

From the parking area, you will need to walk and climb stairs to reach these viewpoints. It was exhausting, so it was good that we brought a bottle of water. We stayed in Thousand Island, which is named because of the several islands that can be seen from this spot. We counted 5 islands and Atuh Beach. Kat said this is her favorite place. We skipped climbing down to the treehouse because we were already spent from walking.

Stairs to TreeHouse, Thousand Island, Nusa Penida

After recovering from the walk, we went back and told our driver we were good to go.

Our next stop is the Teletubbies Hill . Kat thought this is where the children show was filmed, but we learned that it was only a resemblance. The hills have a distinct round shape, similar to the Chocolate Hills in Bohol.

To me, it seemed like a good place to lie down or enjoy a picnic. It also likes like somewhere you can play or fly a kite.

Teletubbies Hill, Nusa Penida

We also stopped by the Goa Giri Putri Temple . The temple is located inside a giant cave, with a narrow opening that serves as entrance.

We crawled into the narrow space and found ourselves inside a huge cavern, with sparse lights on selected corners. I wish we’d brought a flashlight to see better, as it could be very dark. A pathway leads to the main function hall where locals pray.

Goa Giri Putri Temple, Nusa Penida

The cave was our last stop on our 2 days tour in Nusa Penida.

We had lunch in a nice sea-side restaurant and and then took a short stop in a black-sand beach we passed by. We didn’t stay long because it was hot and there wasn’t much shade in the area. We took pictures and then our tour guide finally dropped us off in the port.

Random black-sand beach in Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida offers very different attractions from the usual scenery in Bali. We had a good time here.

In summary, here is our 2 days itinerary in Nusa Penida. Basically it covers the West Tour and East Tour.

Day 1 – Nusa Penida West Tour

  • Snorkeling (Manta Bay, Gamat Point, Buddha’s Underwater Temple, GT Point)
  • Kelingking Beach
  • Angel Billabong
  • Broken Beach
  • Crystal Beach

Day 2 – Nusa Penida East Tour

  • Atuh Beach and Diamond Beach
  • Thousand Islands and Tree House
  • Teletubbies Hill
  • Goa Giri Putri Temple

If you’re going to stay longer, you may also visit the off-beaten spots in Nusa Penida. Here are the attractions you can visit in a day:

  • Peguyanan Waterfall
  • Tembeling Natural Pool
  • Tembeling Beach
  • Banah Cliff Point

If you’re into diving, you might want to stay a little longer in the island. There are several dive spots accessible in Nusa Penida such as Liberty Wreck, which is one of the best dive sites worldwide .

Here are important tips when traveling to Nusa Penida.

  • As said above, rent a scooter only if you know what you’re doing . Currently, the road conditions in Nusa Penida aren’t ideal, with unpaved roads and pot holes. It’s easy to rent a scooter without a license or passport, but it’s still best to bring an International Driver’s License or a temporary driver’s license, which you can get on an office in Denpasar, Bali.
  • Get a pre-booked tour . Pre-booked tours are cheaper compared to tours offered on the spot.
  • The destinations in Nusa Penida are further than they appear in Google Maps . Most attractions are an hour apart.
  • Expect busy crowds in the West Tour . Nusa Penida used to be deserted a few years back, but now it’s heavy with tourists on a day trip to see Kelingking Beach. If you want a quieter trip, do the East Tour instead. Or better yet, stay overnight to cover both areas.
  • Bring protection from the sun . Similar to Bali, the weather in Nusa Penida is usually hot and humid. Bring sunblock, sunglasses, hat and a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated.

Where is Nusa Penida?

Nusa Penida is a small island located southeast of Bali in Indonesia.

The Nusa Islands consist of three small islands (Nusa Penida, Nusa Ceningan, and Nusa Lembongan).

Nusa Penida is the most famous of the 3 islands, with beautiful attractions such as Kelingking Beach (T-Rex Beach), Crystal Bay, and Diamond Beach.

Best Time to Visit Nusa Penida

Indonesia has two seasons: a dry season and a rainy season.

This beautiful island is a popular destination all year round!  But the best time for a day trip to Nusa Penida is during the dry season, from May to October.

August is the driest month! The weather is sunny and dry during these months, perfect for boat tours, swimming, snorkeling, and exploring the island.

Nusa Penida Island has a tropical climate with high humidity, and the average temperature is 27°C all year round.

It’s good to know that during the rainy season (from November to April)  or when the sea conditions are bad, the boat schedules can change and be delayed a lot, so plan your trip to Nusa Penida!

TIP In high season, we strongly recommend booking accommodation, ferry tickets, and tours in advance!

Nusa penida west tour.

On the west coast of Nusa Penida, you can visit beautiful attractions such as Kelingking Beach, Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong, and Crystal Bay.

If your Indonesia Itinerary doesn’t allow you to spend a few days on the island, the best way to get there is to join on a  day trip from Bali.

Kelingking Beach

It’s the most popular spot on the Nusa Penida day trip. The famous T-Rex Beach is one of the best and most beautiful places in Nusa Penida.

Most people just enjoy the breathtaking views from above, take the perfect Instagram photo, and continue exploring the sights of Nusa Penida.

But there is a steep and scary path leading down to the beach.

If you would like to take an epic walk along the T-Rex ridgeline, you should plan to spend at least 2-3 hours there, as the steep trail is not easy to walk on.

Broken Beach

Broken Beach is a small cove known for its naturally formed arch in the rocks and is one of the most beautiful attractions in Nusa Penida.

No matter how inviting the beautiful water there is no way to access the beach or swim, but the stunning views make it worth a visit.

Spend at least 1 hour there, walk along the natural bridge, and see Broken Beach from different angles.

Good to know The water at Broken Beach is so crystal clear that you can see manta rays from above. Get an unforgettable experience and  swim with manta rays.

Angel’s Billabong is located just a few minutes from Broken Beach. It is a natural infinity pool between two cliffs and one of the most unique attractions in Nusa Penida.

Nusa Penida has many beautiful beaches , but in our opinion, the most beautiful beach in Nusa Penida is Diamond Beach.

The untouched white sands, unique rock formations, and crystal clear turquoise waters make it the perfect place for beach lovers.

Diamond Beach gets its name from the diamond-shaped rock formation on the beach.

An epic steep staircase leads to the beach, which offers fantastic photo opportunities. Getting down the steep stairs to the beach is a challenge, but after a dip in the refreshing water, it’s well worth the effort!

The Best Nusa Pendia Day Trip from Seminyak Bali (2023)

This post may contain affiliate links, meaning I make a commission if you purchase or book through my links at no extra cost to you More info: Read Disclosure & Privacy Policy

A trip to Bali is not complete without visiting Nusa Penida Island. Are you wondering how to get from Seminyak to Nusa Penida if you want to escape the bustling streets of Seminyak and have an amazing adventure?

Well, there are a few choices, but the best one is to go on a day trip to Nusa Penida, a beautiful island off the coast of Bali.

With its beautiful cliffs, white-sand beaches, and clear, blue waters full of sea life, Nusa Penida is a tropical paradise.

I hope this post will help you make the most of your day trip from Seminyak to Nusa Penida by taking you through the highlights of this fascinating place.

Table of Contents

A Day Trip to Nusa Penida from Seminyak

To fall in love with Bali, you must leave the dirty beaches and touristy streets of places like Kuta and explore the (kind of) untouched nature of the islands in the middle and out to sea.

The best way to do that is to take a day trip to Nusa Penida. A day trip can be planned from most of Bali’s beach suburbs on the main island, like Kuta, Seminyak, and others.

Alternatively, you can book online at least one day ahead of time. You can make reservations online with a different of ferry companies.

It might not be the cheapest day trip in Bali, but it might be the most memorable. I would recommend booking through Klook . We never had any issues, and you can trust them.

How to Get to Nusa Penida from Seminyak

Most boats leave from Sanur Harbour, which is the best place to start your trip to Nusa Penida. Private and public boats look alike, so if you don’t have time to stay on the island for a few days like we did, I suggest you go on an epic day trip. It looks like there are two main-day trips.

nusa penida day trip klook

BEST NUSA PENIDA DAY TRIP TOURS

These are the two most well-known Nusa Penida tours. We took the Bali Nusa Penida Tour, meeting at Sanur Harbour.

Please keep in mind that this only includes the ferry ride from Sanur to Nusa Penida. You will need to rent a motorcycle or private car to get around the island on your own.

  • Nusa Penida Tour from Bali (Meet Up at Sanur Harbor). It is a popular day trip from Bali to Penida, with all the highlights.
  • From Bali: Swim with Manta Rays in Nusa Penida. The most incredible experience was swimming with giant mantas.

The first tour is called the BEST Nusa Penida Tour from Bali (Meet Up at Sanur Harbor) , and it essentially covers all of the most famous beaches and viewpoints on both the Nusa Penida East Tour and the Nusa Penida West Tour in a single day, along with snorkelling opportunities. This is the one we took.

A DAY TRIP TO NUSA PENIDA: THE DETAILS

As long as you get to Sanur Harbour on time, getting on the ferry is pretty quick. We reserved our ferry tickets two days ahead of time, so we didn’t have to worry about finding the right tour on the spot. Instead, we went straight to the tour company to get our tickets.

(This tour did not operate in the same manner as other locations where you had to present your QR code before proceeding.) You will need to get a bracelet or ticket in person, and you will need to keep it safe until you get back to Sanur.

Otherwise, you might not be able to get on the ferry. Make sure you remember this, even if you book ahead of time.

Taking a Day Tour to Nusa Penida from Bali

Also, please remember that the Nusa Penida day trip tour we booked did not include getting to and from our hotel. Those things will need to be arranged separately. I suggest taking a Grab taxi or a scooter to get to Sanur Harbour.

The boat ride from Bali’s Sanur Harbour takes 30 minutes, so if you’re staying in Canggu, Seminyak, or Kuta, getting to Nusa Penida quickly for a day trip is easy.

We stayed in Ubud during our day trip to Nusa Penida, so we left our villa an hour early and got to the harbour by 8:45 am.

nusa penida day trip klook

EXPLORING NUSA PENIDA: What you can expect to see on a Day Trip to Nusa Penida

We arrived early and reached Nusa Penida island by 10:15 a.m. You’ll have to explore the island on your own using a motorcycle or a private car once you get there.

Just keep in mind where the tour company spot is, and pay close attention to the time when you need to return to board the boat to return to Sanur Harbour.

The Best and cheapest way to have a great day trip on Nusa Penida

To get a better bargain, move a little further towards the waterfront boat stalls from the tour companies’ booths. Most importantly, you should know which side of Nusa Penida island you want to explore: the east or the west.

This will tell you how much a taxi or scooter ride will cost. If you don’t have experience riding, I don’t suggest getting a scooter because the roads on the island are a bit bumpy.

nusa penida day trip klook

Do not think you can see both sides of the island in one day; that is impossible on a day trip. If you genuinely want an entirely immersive experience, you must choose one or the other. Most importantly, bring cash because Nusa Penida doesn’t have many ATMs.

Nusa Penida Highlights Tour

  • Kelingking Beach (West side)
  • Angel’s Billabong (West side)
  • Broken Beach (west side)
  • Diamond Beach (East side)
  • Crystal Bay Beach (West side)
  • Treehouse (East side)
  • Many panoramic viewpoints (East side)
  • Teletubbies Hill (East side)

Natural attractions of Nusa Penida

Kelingking beach.

You have probably seen a lot of pictures of Kelingking Beach on Instagram, even if you don’t use it. When you visit the viewpoint above the beach, you will understand why it’s a travel blogger’s dream location on Instagram.

However, it’s also a great place to visit for those who don’t feel the need to make their friends envious of their beautiful travel photos. It’s pretty amazing to look at, even in real life.

The path down to the beach wasn’t very safe, but most people, including my husband and me, were happy with the view from above. I wouldn’t suggest going down unless you are a fitness expert. It’s not for everyone.

nusa penida day trip klook

After enjoying the breathtaking views of Kelingking Beach, we had lunch at one of the eateries that are close to the cliffs that overlook the shore.

There aren’t many restaurants around, so this is an excellent place to eat if you want to see the highlights of the side you’ve selected and save time. Naturally, Kelingking Beach is the first thing you see when you get there.

The next stops on our tour were Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong, located on the western side of Nusa Penida island (since we only saw this side of the island, I can only speak for the side we did visit, if that makes sense).

Our driver took us there. The fact that these two are in the same place and can be reached in five minutes is fantastic. There’s no reason to worry about driving in a hurry.

You would probably need an hour to see both and enjoy the incredible natural formations.

nusa penida day trip klook

BROKEN BEACH

When you get to the places where Broken and Angel’s Billabong are, it’s up to you which one you would love to see first—they are 5 minutes apart! Broken Beach is on your left.

It looks like a round pond with the ocean rushing below a rock bridge.

The name comes from the way the rocks around this beach are shaped, which looks like an arch.

This arch-shaped thing looks like a hole in the wall at first glance, which makes it look like it’s broken.

It’s a great place to stroll around, but if you want to see more of the ocean, make sure to stroll around the nearby rocks.

You should know that there might be other tourists there depending on when you get there, so be ready to wait a little while to take pictures.

ANGEL’S BILLABONG

To the right of Broken Beach, around the coast, is Angel’s Billabong, a beautiful natural feature on Bali, Indonesia’s island of Nusa Penida.

This one-of-a-kind rock formation on the southwest coast of the island forms a peaceful natural infinity pool with a view of the huge Indian Ocean.

The pool’s clear water makes it a safe and peaceful place to swim at low tide, revealing a fascinating underwater world.

CRYSTAL BAY

Our day trip to Nusa Penida ended with a visit to Crystal Bay Beach. It looks like this is where most tours end, whether they are private or with a group.

If I’m being honest, though, this beach wasn’t very interesting. As you might guess, it was very crowded, and we didn’t like it at all.

There was no shade at all, but they did have sunbeds with umbrellas that I think you could rent.

At this point, though, you won’t have time to rest because you need to get back to where the tour company is on the harbour so they can take you back to Sunar.

We did go swimming, though, because it was too hot and we needed to cool off. They also have some simple shower rooms that cost less than £1 or $1.

Is going to Nusa Penida worth it?

Absolutely! A day trip from Seminyak to Nusa Penida is an adventure you will never forget, full of amazing views and one-of-a-kind activities.

The natural beauty of this island paradise will take your breath away, from the stunning Kelingking Beach to the mesmerising Broken Beach.

Many people visit Nusa Penida to explore hidden caves, snorkel with colourful marine life, or just relax in the calm waters.

While a day trip may not cover everything this island offers, it is a great way to get away from Seminyak’s busy streets and take in the wonders of nature.

17 Jun Nusa Penida Travel Guide: Perfect for Budget and Solo Travelers!

Nusa Pendia

Over the years as pictures of the curved spine of Kelingking Beach have gone viral online, Nusa Penida has become a main attraction to visiting Indonesia. A part of a a trio of smallers islands, Nusa Pendia sits at the southeast coast of the main island of Bali.  Here you will find less Western restaurants, a much quieter atmosphere, some untouched wilderness, and the iconic, epic coastlines!

In this travel guide you can find all the information needed to plan your own trip:

Ways to Experience Nusa Penida

A trip to Nusa Penida can be experienced in different ways. For most people, visiting Nusa Penida means a taking a guided day trip tour from Bali. However, it’s becoming increasingly popular to go to Nusa Penida on your own, stay a few days and explore at your leisure time. There are pros and cons to both options and the way in which you decide to visit Nusa Penida greatly depends on any time limitations and how you like to travel.

Visiting On Your Own

Flexible planning, you’re on your own time

More planning involved on your part

Need to arrange getting to Nusa Penida

Must rent a motorbike or hire a driver

Ability to stay several days and explore the island in its entirety and experience a quiet paradise

Opportunity to explore many beautiful places, Nusa Penida is known for Kelingking Beach but there’s so much more

Visiting on a Tour

Structured day, possibly with a group depending on the tour

Usually package deal, everything planned for you

Transportation to the island usually included

Transportation on the island included

Tours are typically day tours from Bali without the option of staying on Nusa Penida

Tours usually only take you to the popular spots. And even if given the ability to choose where to go, your options are limited in just one day because of how far locations are from one another

In terms of price comparison, it depends. Exploring for one day on your own, could very well be much cheaper than a day tour package (depending on the tour). However, if you stay a few days, obviously the costs go up but you’re getting more experiences than a day tour.

As I mentioned, there are pros and cons to both, so choose whichever suits you best! Either way there’s no doubt you will enjoy this majestic island.

Booking a Day Trip Tour to Nusa Penida

A day trip can be taken on your own to the island, however with a shorter amount of time an organized tour may be more worth it.

Many days tours are offered by street vendors and hotels in Bali. However, you can also book ahead of time online. Below are some great options on GetYourGuide

Getting to and from Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is small island close to the mainland of Bali; to get there it is about a 30 minute boat ride from Sanur Harbor (on Bali). However, it can also be accessed from Nusa Lembongan or from Lombok. The most popular way is from Bali though.

Booking a Boat Ticket to Nusa Penida from Bali

*If you are taking a tour to Nusa Penida, boat transportation is usually included, but double check.

Securing a boat ticket to Nusa Penida can be done in many ways. Some hotels will help you arrange it, which may include pick up from the hotel and the boat to Nusa Penida.

You can also book online at 12Go  or Klook , both of which are very reliable for all modes of transportation. Keep in mind, if you do book online, this should be done at least a day in advance. The longer you wait, the price usually goes up.

The other option is the old school way, booking from a vendor. There are many vendors on the streets within Bali who will provide transportation and tours to Nusa Penida. Or you can wing it, and show up to Sanur Harbor and buy your ticket from there. Boats and ferries leave everyday, I would just recommend showing up early.

Whichever way you buy your ticket though, I recommend comparing prices across the board and weighing your options. Some ways of booking may be more expensive than others, however, some may include transportation to Sanur Harbor.

What I did:

I booked a ticket for a speedboat online at Klook , the day before, which was 165,000 IDR (~$12 USD). I actually ended up missing my boat due to oversleeping and not reading the fine print about arriving early, but they just stuck me on the next boat leaving at no extra cost, so no problem. Don’t panic if this happens to you!

Getting to Nusa Penida

In summary..

Ways to Book a Boat Ticket to Nusa Penida:

  • At your hotel
  • From a street vendor
  • Online at 12Go or Klook

Tips When Booking:

  • Compare prices
  • Haggle/bargain if you can
  • Consider the pros and cons and price differences of booking a ticket that includes transportation to the harbor vs. getting there on your own
  • Book as early as possible to get a better price
  • Check your ticket for the time you’re supposed to arrive at the harbor

Getting to Sanur Harbor

Most speedboats and ferries to Nusa Penida will leave from Sanur Harbor. When purchasing your ticket, I would double check that this is your departure point. After doing so, I would check Google Maps to see how far away you are from Sanur Harbor, because given its location and Bali traffic, it might take you up to 45 minutes drive to get there. This detail is important to planning your arrival time so you don’t miss your boat (like me lol!).

If you’re taking a tour, most likely it will provide hotel pickup to the harbor, therefore you will not need to worry about the logistics of getting there. Make sure this is the case though.

If you are not on a tour, the cheapest way to reach Sanur Harbor is using the GoJek or Grab   app. You can also take a taxi, this is a good option to support locals.

When you arrive at Sanur Harbor, there’s a small fee for drivers to enter the parking lot, to avoid this fee just have them drop you off outside of it and walk in. Be sure to arrive early at the harbor before your boat leaves. And don’t worry if you missed breakfast, there’s a lot of places to buy food and drink at the harbor!

nusa penida day trip klook

Arriving at Nusa Penida

After about 30 minutes on a speedboat, you will arrive at Nusa Penida. If you’re on a tour, a vehicle will be waiting for you.

Otherwise, unless you have prior arrangements, at the harbor you can bargain with someone to rent a motorbike or catch a ride to your hotel or next destination. Don’t worry about no one being there, if anything its overwhelming how many people bombard you with offers. I wasn’t ready for this, so keep a cool head, b e prepared to be rushed and given higher prices,  and use your haggling skills!

If you decide pay a driver, depending on where your hotel or hostel is on Nusa Penida, it’s about 100,000 IDR (~$7 USD) to get there with one of the drivers from the port.  (2019 price)

From Nusa Penida Back to Bali

If you booked a tour, your transportation back will obviously be covered. However, if not you simply go about it the same way you did to get there. Hotels on Nusa Penida will have information about returning back to Bali, or you can book online on 12Go .

Sanur Harbor to Nusa Penida

Transportation on the island

How to get around Nusa Penida is a detail I did not consider before coming and a lot of people don’t. Unlike Bali there are no rideshares, public transportation, or taxis. It’s either you rent a motorbike or car yourself, or you have a private driver.

Renting a motorbike

Renting a motorbike on Nusa Penida is a popular option, especially for backpackers on a budget staying a few days. But although it’s a cheap option, there is one thing to consider: the roads on Nusa Penida are notorious for being really, really bad. There are tons of potholes and many portions of the road are just torn up gravel, most of which are up and down steep hills and curvy roads.

I know many people think they’re invincible, but seriously driving a motorbike in Nusa Penida is only for experienced drivers. If you do opt to rent a motorbike, be extremely cautious, wear a helmet, and have travel insurance –  I saw a lot  of accidents.

To rent a motorbike, you can do so from your accommodation, from a vendor, from the harbor when you arrive OR online here . Motorbikes should be around 75,000 IDR ($5 USD) per day.

nusa penida day trip klook

Renting a motorbike with a driver

When I visited Nusa Penida, I had never driven a motorbike in my life. When I heard about the roads, I knew it would be really stupid to try on my own. Now after seeing those roads, I know I could have gotten really hurt, even if I did know how to drive.

But being on a budget, I didn’t want to break the bank getting a private car to go around the island by myself, so I actually paid someone working at my hostel to drive me around on their motorbike. It was a lot of fun and I got to witness beautiful views without the stress of driving myself.

I paid 300,000 IDR (~$20 USD) per day. To do this, just ask your hotel or hostel if they offer the service, if not they most likely will know someone to call.

Renting a private car with a driver

If you’re not traveling alone, renting a private car with a driver is a really good option because it’s safer than a motorbike and you can split the price with your fellow travelers. When you arrive at the port of Nusa Penida, you can hire a driver there, just by asking one of the men. You can also book from your hotel/hostel, or online at Klook or GetYourGuide . Renting a private car with driver is around 500,000 IDR (~$35 USD) per day (2019 price) .

Places to See on Nusa Penida

On the west coast of nusa penida:, 1. kelingking beach.

Kelingking Beach Nusa Penida

Photos of this unique, curved coastline is what has started to draw more and more people to Nusa Penida; it’s probably the most visited part of the island! And even if you’ve already seen a thousand photos online, it’s unreal to personally stand in front of the T-Rex shaped cliff, and watch the blue waves roll into the rock face.

Parking 5,000 IDR (~$0.40 USD) and entrance fee 10,000 IDR (~$0.80 USD) (Unless you’re driving yourself on a motorbike, you usually won’t have to pay this).

Arrive early morning if you want to miss the crowd.

2. Angel's Billabong

Angels Billabong Bali Nusa Penida

Most people describe Angel’s billabong as a natural infinity pool because when it’s low tide, it sits above the ocean water and you’re able to swim there. If you’re like me and didn’t know this, you might end up there at high tide! You won’t be able to swim, but you will see how clear the water is and you’ll witness some massive waves coming in and hitting the rock face!

Cost | Parking 5,000 IDR (~$0.40 USD) – you only pay once for Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach, and Manta Bay Viewpoint

Tip | if you want to swim here, you need to come at low tide. ask the locals when this is, 3. broken beach.

nusa penida day trip klook

Walking distance from Angel’s Billabong is Broken Beach. This cove is surrounded by cliffs that eventually form a natural bridge. Although you are not able to go down to the beach, the overlook is still a sweet spot. Watching the waves roll in through the opening in the wall was mesmerizing.

Parking 5,000 IDR (~$0.40 USD) – you only pay once for Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach, and Manta Bay Viewpoint

To really get the full experience, make sure and walk around the cove and over the natural bridge!

4. Manta Bay Viewpoint

Manta Bay Viewpoint Nusa Penida Bali

Manta Bay is just on the other side of Broken Beach. Sometimes, you are able to look down and see the magnificent manta ray swimming below. When I visited, I wasn’t able to see any because there were so many waves, but because it’s so close to Broken Beach, its worth it to check and see!

Parking 5,000 IDR (~$0.40 USD) – you only pay once for Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach, and Manta Bay Viewpoint

Go at low tide to have a better chance of spotting a manta ray!

On the East Side of Nusa Penida:

5. pura goa giri putri cave.

nusa penida day trip klook

On my way to the East Coast of Nusa Penida, I stopped at Pura Goa Putri Cave which is a Hindu Temple inside a cave! In order to enter, you have to crawl through a small opening. Once inside the ceiling opens up and you follow a pathway leading to multiple prayers sights and then come out the back of the cave. It’s really so interesting!

20,000 IDR (~$1.50 USD)

Bring a sarong if you can, as you have to cover your knees to enter a Hindu temple. However, if you don’t have one, they do offer some at the temple for you to borrow.

6. Diamond Beach

Diamond Beach Nusa Penida Bali

Diamond beach, like Kelingking beach, has started to really blow up on social media. And for good reason! This beach is paradise, but (when I visited) without the crowds.

5,000 IDR (~$0.40 USD) for parking and 10,000 IDR (~$0.80 USD) entrance – this covers Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach

When going down to the beach, be careful on the stairs as they become more narrow.

7. Atuh Beach

nusa penida day trip klook

Atuh Beach is the most “commercial” of the beaches meaning it has plenty of lounge chairs and local food vendors or warungs. I ate a delicious lunch here with an incredible view of crystal clear water. Also, if you buy food or drink, they offer you a chair for free to lounge in later!

5,000 IDR (~$0.40 USD) for parking and 10,000 IDR (~$0.80 USD) entrance – this covers Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach

Many people who look up photos of Atuh Beach see photos of Sebele beach, which has been mistakenly called Atuh Beach. Sebele beach is actually on the other side; I did not know this when I visited; I definitely need to go back to see that beach too!

8. Thousand Island (Pulau Seribu) Viewpoint

Thousand Island Viewpoint Nusa Penida Bali

This viewpoint was probably my favorite! There was no one there except for a few people passing through, so I got to sit and enjoy the view for awhile without any disturbance. And that’s really what you need to take in this view, because it’s absolutely magnificent!

5,000 IDR (~$0.40 USD) to park and 10,000 IDR (~$0.80 USD) for entrance – this covers Thousand Island Viewpoint and Rumah Pohon Treehouse

This place is interchangeably called Thousand Island Viewpoint or Pulau Seribu; it’s the same place!

9. Rumah Pohon Treehouse

nusa penida day trip klook

The Rumah Pohon Treehouse is another instagram phenomena. Just next to the Thousand Island Viewpoint, the treehouse offers another perspective of the cliff and is a picture perfect scene.

*I was definitely under the impression the treehouse was just a cute place for pictures, etc. however you can actually book to stay there! Keep in mind, it is very simple accommodation, just a mattress from what I’ve heard, so you’re really just paying for the view.

5,000 IDR (~$0.40 USD) to park and 10,000 IDR (~$0.80 USD) for entrance – this covers Thousand Island Viewpoint and Rumah Pohon Treehouse

Keep going past the treehouse, up the hill for another lookout!

Other Places to See on Nusa Penida

These places are a little more off the beaten path, and I never got to chance to visit myself. Next time!

Snorkeling and Diving at Nusa Penida

Manta point.

Although there are several spots for snorkeling and diving off the coast of Nusa Penida, the most famous is Manta Point. Manta Point is where tons of manta rays come to feed (naturally, not fed by humans). So although it is not guaranteed you will see any, there is still a big chance you will see many gigantic, manta rays!

nusa penida day trip klook

When I went snorkeling here, I was actually sea sick from the boat. But I wanted to see these beautiful creatures so badly I jumped in the water anyways. And I’m so happy I did. My mind was absolutely blown! Manta rays surrounded me. They glided through the water so gracefully, the movement of their body portraying them as if they were flying. And they’re not shy at all either; many times they would swim right at me, and I had to dodge their gigantic body. Manta rays are not dangerous at all, however, to touch them you risk damaging their skin.

Snorkeling with Manta Rays Nusa Penida

Despite the sea sickness, this was one of the most magical moments of my life and I highly recommend anyone traveling to Nusa Penida do it. If you’re taking a day trip, it’s possible to book a tour that includes this. However, if not you can book with a dive company on the island.

Snorkeling with Manta Rays Nusa Penida Bali

I booked my snorkeling tour through Mambo Dive Resort and thoroughly enjoyed snorkeling with them. They were a lot of fun, very respectful of nature, informative, and it was reasonably price at 350,000 IDR (~$25 USD). We went to two snorkeling places, Manta Point and a spot to see coral (either Gamat or Crystal Bay). There are some snorkeling companies that will offer 4 or so snorkeling points, but I personally recommend only doing two (one being Manta Point) so you can spend more time at Manta Point.

Other snorkeling spots at Nusa Penida besides Manta Point:

Crystal bay, toyapakeh wall point, buddha temple, where to stay on nusa penida.

If you’ve decided there’s so much to see on Nusa Penida and you would like to take your time and explore, there are plenty of accommodation options on this small island, from budget to luxury.

If you’re a solo traveler and looking to save some money, hostels are the way to go. When it comes to hostels, Nusa Penida has quite a few for such a small island. And they’re definitely budget friendly! Hostels range from $5-15 USD, and some even have a pool .

When I visited Nusa Penida I stayed at Packer Box Hostel , which was simple, but clean and comfortable and I met some amazing people there!

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Packer Box (@thepackerbox) on Aug 11, 2019 at 9:34pm PDT

If you’re traveling as a group of 2, private rooms can also be a really cheap option to split. Many of the hostels on Nusa Penida offer private rooms that are just as much as a dorm option at another hostel. On Hostelworld private rooms range from $15 – 40 USD.

Nusa Penida has a number of resort hotels featuring spas, pools, a tropical breakfast, and all for affordable prices. Some highly rated ones are Blue Harbor Beachfront Villas & Resto , Ocean Terrace Suite and Spa , Semabu Hills Hotel , and Akusara Jungle Resort . Most are around $50 USD but reaching no more than $150 USD.

Tip When Booking Accommodation on Nusa Penida:

While you get excited about beautiful places and are mind blown by how cheap they are, don’t forget to check the location. Nusa Penida is a small island, but it takes a very long time to get places. So weigh the pros and cons of accommodation options and proximity to where you want to visit.

Best Time to Visit Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida can be explored at any point in the year! However, it’s best May to September when it’s almost guaranteed dry weather.

More Resources for Your Trip to Indonesia

Planning your own trip? Here’s some resources I used to book and coordinate my itinerary through Thailand along with some recommendations:

If you’re a budget traveler or looking for an easy way to meet others,  Hostelworld is the best place to search. Below are some of my recommendations, click to search for availability !

  • Canguu: The Farm Hostel
  • Ubud: Puri Garden Hotel & Hostel OR The Wayan House OR Ubud Rice Field House
  • Nusa Penida: Packer Box Hostel OR Nuansa Penida Hostel
  • Seminyak: My Capsule Bali
  • Kuta (Lombok): Pipes Hostel
  • Gili Air: H20 Yoga & Meditartion Center OR Tipsea Turtle
  • Gili Trawangan: Atlas Gili

Booking.com is the way to go when search for hotels in Indonesia because they typically offer free cancellation with plenty of affordable to more luxurious stays – also for cheap!

Flights to Indonesia are typically cheapest to Jakarta but shouldn’t be too much more directly to Bali/Denpasar. I flew to Singapore and then flew to Bali which is also a good option. Domestic flights within Indonesia can be more or less  affordable especially if traveling light. There are ferry options, but the waters between island can be pretty wild so if you can, I recommend flying. To find the best deal & prices I recommend using Skyscanner .

BUSES/Ferries/& more

The easiest ways to search for ways to get around Indonesia are with  12GoAsia  and Klook . Both platforms show various options (ferries, buses, flights, etc.) so you can compare option and prices in English.   Check 12GoAsia out here and check out Klook here

Travel insurance is a must for every trip to ensure you’re covered in unexpected situations. My go to travel insurance is always WorldNomads which is made for backpackers. You can search for coverage here .

If you’re a digital nomad looking for travel medical emergency insurance, I also suggest Safety Wing .

Tours & Experiences

There’s a lot of free thing to do in Indonesia and/or experiences you can do on your own. I always recommend checking blog posts for inspiration. If you’re interested in tours and experiences though like snorkeling, cooking classes & more then I most recommend  Klook  and GetYourGuide for Indonesia.

The Bali to Nusa Penida route: What’s the best way to get there?

how to get from Bali to Nusa Penida

As Nusa Penida doesn’t have an airport, the only way to get to the smaller island from Bali is by boat. You have a few different types of boats to choose from for your trip, including fast boats and ferries, both of which offer multiple departure times each day.

Ferries to Nusa Penida : If you decide to go by ferry, which is the more affordable option, your best bet is to book a ticket with 12Go Ferries . However, you should keep in mind that some of these ferries won’t go directly from Bali to Nusa Penida and instead first make a stop in Nusa Lembongan.

Fast boats to Nusa Penida : Fast boats or speedboats take you directly from Bali to Nusa Penida and are the more popular option among tourists. Although these boats cost more, you’ll get to your destination much faster and you’ll enjoy a much more comfortable voyage. Some of the best fast boat operators include Blue Water Express and Penidago among others.

Which ports do you depart from/arrive at?

fast boats in Sanur

The main port of embarkation is Sanur Harbor, but it is also possible to reach Nusa Penida from Padangbai . Both ports are quite busy, with a lot of noise, chaos and harbor traffic, so make sure that you arrive at least 30 minutes before your boat’s departure time so you can find your boat.

Nusa Penida has four arrival ports, namely Toyapakeh, Buyuk, Sampalan — where the fast boats disembark — and the ferry port in Sampalan. Sampalan is centrally located, with most of the island’s main attractions being nearby. Unlike Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Penida has a proper pier which makes for easy disembarkation.

Hotel transfers to ports

Most fast boat operators allow you to upgrade your package to include hotel transfers, which is a popular option for many travelers. You’ll be picked up from your hotel in Bali and when you reach Nusa Penida, you’ll enjoy a transfer to your accommodation on that side. This makes for convenient travel and is well worth the additional cost.

Guided tours to Nusa Penida from Bali

Another option is to book a guided Nusa Penida day trip from Bali. This way, an expert guide will handle your hotel transfers, boat tickets and travel itinerary. All you need to do is be ready and waiting in your hotel lobby at the scheduled pickup time and everything else is taken care of, allowing you to truly relax and enjoy Nusa Penida Island to the fullest.

Time on the move: How long is the journey to Nusa Penida from Bali?

The time it takes to get from Bali to Nusa Penida depends on the type of boat you choose for your journey. Another factor that may affect the time it takes to reach the smaller island is the weather conditions on the day, as rough seas and heavy rain may result in a slower journey.

With that being said, the two islands are less than 30 kilometers away from each other, so no matter which boat option you choose or the weather conditions on the day of your trip, you can expect a travel time of under 1.5 hours.

Fast boats : The quickest way to get from Bali to Nusa Penida is to take a fast boat from Sanur. The direct journey should only take around 30 minutes and you’ll enjoy comfortable seating alongside incredible views of the surrounding islands.

Ferries : Your other option is to take a ferry from Sanur to Nusa Penida, which should take roughly 45 minutes depending on the ferry option you choose. You could also take a slow boat to Nusa Lembongan and then take a local boat to Penida, but this would take you well over an hour.

Which is quickest? Taking the fast boat is definitely the recommended option. Not only is it quicker and easier than the ferry, but it is more comfortable and the price difference between the two options is also not too significant.

Budgeting the boat ride: How much should you expect to pay for a trip from Bali to Nusa Penida?

Nusa Penida tours price

Boat rides between Bali and Nusa Penida are relatively affordable, with ferry tickets costing between US$8 and US$10 per person and fast boat tickets costing approximately US$20 per person.

Tickets with hotel transfers

Packages inclusive of hotel transfers on both sides typically cost around US$30 per person. However, the cost of these packages may fluctuate depending on the location of your accommodation in Bali and how many people are in your group.

Private speedboats

If you’re looking for a luxury option, you could always hire a private speedboat with a skipper for the day. This would eliminate the need to navigate public transport and you could choose your own departure time. However, you can expect to pay at easy US$300 for this type of service.

Should you book in advance?

While you can buy your boat tickets at the onsite ticket offices on the day of your trip, it is best that you secure your tickets online ahead of time. This way, you won’t have to wait in the long lines and you’ll actually enjoy slightly cheaper rates than if you were to buy onsite. Furthermore, boats can fill up very quickly during high season and booking in advance will ensure you get tickets for your preferred travel dates.

Remember to read reviews online ahead of time and book your tickets through a safe and trustworthy company.

Tour selection: What are the top-rated tours to Nusa Penida from Bali?

best Nusa Penida tours from Bali

If you’re looking to visit the island with a local guide, there are plenty of Nusa Penida day tours from Bali to choose from. The advantage of going on a tour is that your guide will take care of all your travel arrangements and ensure that you see the very best of what the island has to offer.

You can opt for a tour that provides you with a general overview of the island’s top attractions or choose an excursion that focuses on snorkeling and provides you with the opportunity to swim with manta rays and sea turtles.

How much do tours cost?

General tours typically cost between US$40 and US$60 for group excursions, where you’ll get the chance to meet other travelers from around the world. Private excursions, such as the Nusa Penida All-Inclusive Day Trip, typically cost around US$80 per person depending on the number of participants.

Tours that focus specifically on snorkeling, such as the Nusa Penida Manta Ray Experience, usually cost around US$80 for a group trip that’s inclusive of snorkeling gear. Private snorkeling trips usually cost at least US$150 per person for an all-inclusive experience.

If you’re looking for a luxury experience, you may be interested in a VIP Private Boat to Nusa Penida. You’ll get to explore the island with a private speedboat for the day, with no need to navigate public transport. You’ll enjoy a combination of snorkeling with manta rays as well as a land adventure. You can expect to pay roughly US$1,600 for a tour that caters for 3 people.

What do tours include?

Tours are typically inclusive of hotel transfers, boat tickets, lunch, bottled water, any equipment required for activities listed on the itinerary and more. Just make sure you read specific tour inclusions carefully so that you know what to expect.

While private tours are more expensive, you’ll enjoy a personalized experience with a custom itinerary. Your guide will cater solely to the specific needs of you and your travel companions. Most tours take place in English, although some private excursions offer tours in other languages, such as French and Japanese.

Ideal visit timing: When should you plan your trip to Nusa Penida for the best experience?

While Nusa Penida can be visited at any time throughout the year, the optimal time to visit the island is during Indonesia’s dry season, which takes place between May and September.

This period is known for its warm dry weather, with very little chance of rain and great water visibility that is perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving. Visiting the island during the rainy season can really dampen your overall experience.

Keep in mind that the island is busiest during June and July, which are the peak months for tourism in Indonesia. However, Nusa Penida will still be a lot quieter than Bali, which can get quite chaotic during June and July.

Day trip essentials: What items are crucial to bring along to Nusa Penida?

snorkeling in Nusa Penida

Waterproof bag : It’s recommended that you pack all your day trip essentials into a waterproof daypack so that they are protected against potential splashes during your time on Nusa Penida. If you don’t have a waterproof bag, you can easily find one for sale in Bali.

Sun protection : Sun protection is one of the most important things to take with you for your Nusa Penida day trip. You’ll be enjoying beautiful beaches and the great outdoors, so make sure you pack a sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.

Swimming gear : As you’ll probably be swimming and/or snorkeling, you should also bring along a swimsuit, towel and maybe even a change of clothes in case the outfit you’re traveling in gets wet along the way.

A charged camera : There will be dozens of amazing photo opportunities so make sure you bring your camera or a smartphone for taking pictures. You may want to bring a power bank and backup batteries just in case.

Good walking shoes : Wear comfortable walking shoes for exploring the island, but bring a pair of flip-flops along with for when it comes time to hit the beach.

Local currency : It’s also a good idea to bring some cash along with you as Nusa Penida’s ATMs (close to the island’s northern coast, where the boat terminals are located.) can sometimes be unreliable.

Getting around Nusa Penida: Is it a straightforward process?

When it comes to getting around Nusa Penida, you have a few different options available to you. The island is significantly smaller than Bali, but it is still the largest of the three Nusa islands and walking between all of the attractions is simply not feasible.

Private vehicles : While it is not possible to rent a car and self-drive during your time on the island, you can rent a vehicle with a private driver. This is a good option for if you have a lot of suitcases or want to enjoy the comfort of a car over a scooter.

Scooter rentals : Scooter rental is probably the most popular form of transport on Nusa Penida. There are scooter rental companies all over the island and it is not necessary to make a booking in advance. However, you should inspect the scooter you plan on hiring and make sure that it is in decent condition.

Take care when riding around the island on a scooter as many of the roads have potholes and are in need of improvements. Also keep in mind that complete darkness sets in around 45 minutes after sunset and you don’t want to be driving on Nusa Penida’s unlit roads after dark.

The signal can be faulty on the island so you can’t rely on Google Maps or similar apps to get you around. You may have to rely on asking locals for directions or a physical map to get from one attraction to another.

Guided tours to Nusa Penida : Because of the challenges associated with getting around the island on your own, guided Nusa Penida day trips from Bali are often preferred. This way, an experienced guide will handle your transportation needs and ensure you don’t get lost or put yourself in danger.

Dining options: Where are the best places to eat in Nusa Penida?

restaurant in Nusa Penida

When it comes to finding a bite to eat in Nusa Penida, you have plenty of options available to you. No matter your dietary requirements, budget and other requirements, there is a restaurant on the island to suit your preferences.

Restaurants serving local cuisine in Nusa Penida

If you’re interested in trying out local food at a traditional warung, some of the best options available to you include Warung Forest, Ogix Warung and Warung Tu Pande. On warung menus, you’ll find things like nasi goreng (fried rice), tempeh, tofu, corn fritters and other traditional dishes.

Fine dining in Nusa Penida

If fine dining is more your style, you may want to check out West Food & Drink as well as Cactus Nusa Penida. Both restaurants offer lovely atmospheres and a variety of international cuisines to tantalize your tastebuds.

Eateries with global menus in Nusa Penida

Those looking for budget-friendly eateries that offer a combination of local cuisine and international fare may want to try The Chill Penida, Mambo Beach Cafe and Amok Sunset among others.

No matter where you decide to eat in Nusa Penida. you’re likely to find a wide variety of vegetarian and vegan options. There are so many great restaurants to eat at on the island, so try to visit more than one during your time there.

If you want to buy water, cool drinks, and snacks like chocolate bars, fruit, etc., there are  plenty of supermarkets and corner shops scattered around Nusa Penida, so there is no need to bring these items with you from Bali.

Nusa Lembongan visit: Should you include it in your itinerary?

Nusa Lembongan

If you have the time, you should definitely include the nearby island of Nusa Lembongan in your itinerary. While the islands are similar in many ways, they are still different enough some each other to make it worthwhile to visit both.

Nusa Lembongan may be smaller in size but it has many unmissable attractions of its own, including Devil’s Tears, the Mangrove Forest, Mushroom Beach, the Gala-Gala Underground House and so much more. The island is one of the top-rated destinations in Indonesia and is a firm favorite amongst tourists from all over the world.

Even if you only have a few hours available to you, it is worth your time to visit Nusa Lembongan while you are in the vicinity of the Nusa archipelago.

Island comparison: Nusa Lembongan versus Nusa Penida, which one stands out?

Both Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida are fantastic island destinations in Indonesia and it is very difficult to say if one is better than the other. The main difference between the two islands is that Nusa Penida is a lot larger than Nusa Lembongan, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that Penida has more attractions.

Nusa Lembongan has been catering to tourists for a lot longer than Nusa Penida has, therefore has slightly better infrastructure and a wider variety of things to see and do. Nusa Lembongan also has better surf spots than Nusa Penida, while Penida has more remote beaches.

Both islands are very special in their own way, each boasting a variety of magnificent natural attractions, so why not visit both of them and decide which one is your personal favorite?

Exploring both islands: Is it possible to cover Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida in a single day?

It is definitely possible to visit both Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida in one day. The best way to do this would be through booking a boat tour that visits both islands. The two islands are separated by a very narrow waterway, which makes it easy to visit both islands in a single day.

Overnight stay possibilities: What are your options for accommodation if you decide to extend your visit in Nusa Penida?

Unicorn Bungalow, Nusa Penida

If you want to see everything that Nusa Penida has to offer and experience the island in its entirety, you may be interested in extending your day trip and spending a few nights on the island instead. If this is the case, you have an array of different types of accommodation to choose from.

From charming villas to luxury hotels and everything in between, Nusa Penida has accommodation options to suit a range of different budgets and preferences.

Budget-friendly accommodation in Nusa Penida : If you’re interested in budget-friendly options, you may want to make a booking at Ananta Bungalow , Unicorn Bungalow or Pondok Bamboo Villa .

Luxury accommodation in Nusa Penida : If luxury hotels with all the bells and whistles are more to your liking, you may want to stay at Sea La Vie Resort , Deep Roots Dive and Yoga Resort or Mambo Beach Resort .

Wherever you decide to book, the island is well-suited for tourists and you can expect to enjoy well-furnished rooms, beautiful views and all the amenities you need for a comfortable stay.

Ultimate 2-Day Nusa Penida Travel Guide & Itinerary

Ultimate 2-Day Nusa Penida Travel Guide & Itinerary

Nusa Penida is an island located southeast of Bali, Indonesia, and it is the largest island out of the three Nusa Islands (Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan). Since it only takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes by fast boat from Sanur or Padang Bai on the east coast of Bali, it is very ideal to visit the island for a day or two.

There are many Nusa Penida Tours available, but if you have more time, 2 to 3 days are very much ideal to experience the island. Here is a guide on how to experience it!

Pre-travel guide

🌴 book a nusa penida tour:.

  • Nusa Penida Day Tour : If you are only planning a day trip to Nusa Penida, you can book this tour. However, please know that you can only choose either the west OR east focus tour.
  • Nusa Penida Multi-Day Tour : This is the tour you will book if you want to visit for 2 days. This itinerary is based on this tour. So I highly suggest to get this.

⛑️ Travel Insurance:

  • Safety Wing
  • If you are a  Filipino , you can buy using GCASH which is a much cheaper option

🏨 Accommodations:

Personally, I use  Booking.com  to book accommodation, but sometimes I can find good accommodation in  Agoda  too.

However, if you choose to book a package tour, usually accommodations are included. We stayed at Bintang Penida Resort & Spa .

Bintang Penida Resort & Spa, Nusa Penida

🛜 How to stay connected?

During this trip, I bought a  SIM card  at the airport. However, I think it is best to get a  portable wifi  instead so your phone battery will not drain easily. Also,  data esims  are available to purchase if you prefer that.

⛴️ How to get from Bali to Nusa Penida?

☀️ TIP : I recommend wearing short pants because the boat will stop at the seashore. You will need to take off your shoes upon boarding and walk to the seashore where the water is about knee-high.

If you didn’t book a tour , here are some options on how to get from Bali to Nusa Penida:

Option 1 → Book a fast boat : this fast trip between Sanur and Nusa Penida.

Option 2 → Book a ferry : You book through 12go . This option is cheaper than booking the fast boat, and this will take a bit longer too.

🛵 How to get around in Nusa Penida?

  • Scooter : If you know how to drive a scooter, you can rent it anywhere in Bali. Most of the hostels and hotels will guide you where you can rent one.  You can also book a scooter or motorbike online  which is more convenient since you can pick up or get your bike delivered.
  • Hire a driver : You can hire a driver in Nusa. However, if you booked a tour , your transportation is already provided.

Things to do in Nusa Penida for 2 days

➡️ day 1: west side.

The tour starts at 7:30 in the morning at Sanur Beach Harbour. I recommend getting there early. We arrived late and had to change our ferry time. 😅 Since the tour is for only a group of 2, e still managed to see all the spots in our itinerary.

Broken Beach

Broken Beach, also known as Pasih Uug , is a unique geological formation characterized by a natural archway carved into the cliffside. The cove faces the Indian Ocean. I was a bit surprised about the amount of people taking photos here. Nevertheless, the place is beautiful even with the crowd.

Broken Beach, Nusa Penida

Angel’s Billabong

Angel’s Billabong is a natural tide pool formed by the erosion of the surrounding rock formations, creating a natural infinity pool-like structure along the coastline. Since it is a popular place to take photos, just be careful because sometimes fills up with water when the tide is high.

Angel's Billabong, Nusa Penida

Kelingking Beach

Kelingking Beach is also known as T-Rex Beach because the shape resembles Tyrannosaurus Rex. The beach is located on the southwestern coast of Nusa Penida. You can actually go down to the beach, however the way is a bit challenging. Also, it is not suitable for swimming due to the strong currents and rough waves.

☀️ TIP : If you don’t feel like walking all the way down to the beach, but there are too many people at the top taking pictures, just walk a short distance up the path for about 5 or 10 minutes and snap your photos from there.

Kelingking Beach, Nusa Penida

Crystal Bay Beach

Crystal Bay Beach offers spectacular sunset views. There are beachside cafes serving refreshments and local Indonesian food. The beach is a popular destination for snorkeling too.

Crystal Bay Beach, Nusa Penida

➡️ DAY 2: East Side

Snorkeling with manta rays.

Manta Point dive site is one of the best snorkeling sites in Nusa Penida , where snorkelers have the opportunity to swim with manta rays. According to our guide, it is better to do the snorkeling trip during the morning because it has a higher chance of seeing manta rays. For this snorkeling trip we visited Manta Bay, Gamat Bay, and Wall Point.

It was my first time swimming with manta rays and as a freediver, this is the highlight of my Nusa Penida trip. 🤿 BOOK HERE: Snorkeling Experience in Nusa Penida (if you didn’t avail of the Nusa Penida 2-day tour )

Snorkeling with Manta Rays, Nusa Penida

Diamond Beach

Diamond Beach is such an eye-catching tourist spot because of its dramatic cliff formations. You can also go down to the beach and enjoy the white sand and clear turquoise waters. Please know that it might be a little challenging to go down. Atuh Beach is also near Diamond Beach which you can also visit in the area.

Diamond Beach, Nusa Penida

Rumah Pohon Molenteng (Tree House)

This is one of the most Instagrammable spots in Bali. I think most of the travel influencers have an epic photo of this treehouse. There are a few photo options here where you can see the view of a thousand islands in here. If you want to go down to the tree house, you need to pay an additional 75,000 IDR which I didn’t do.

Thousand Islands Viewpoint

Thousand Islands Viewpoint is also known as “Pulau Seribu” in Indonesian. There will be a few photo ops that will have an amazing viewpoint. You can enjoy breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean with a few small islands, giving the impression of a thousand islands spread across the horizon.

Thousand Islands Viewpoint, Nusa Penida

Teletubbies Hill

“Teletubbies Hill” is a nickname for Bukit Teletubbies which has scenic green hills that resemble the landscape from the children’s television show “Teletubbies”.

Teletubbies Hill, Nusa Penida

Back to Bali

Around 4 pm we went to the harbour and hopped on a ferry going back to Bali.

Diamond Beach, Nusa Penida

Overall Experience

I had so much fun in Nusa Penida. It is truly a wonderful place with a lot of breathtaking views. Just keep in mind that with its popularity, there will be a lot of tourists too, which sometimes makes the experience a bit hectic and challenging. However, you will still surely enjoy Nusa Penida and everything it has to offer. So I hope this Nusa Penida travel guide is helpful for your upcoming trip.

A Day Trip to Nusa Penida: One of the Best Bali Day trips

Bali is a bit like Marmite or The Big Bang Theory. You tend to either love it or hate it (I hate both of those if you were wondering). I am however a Bali fan, but that wasn’t always the case. To really fall for Bali, you need to get away from the trashy beaches and tout-filled streets of places like Kuta and out into the (sort of) unspoilt nature of the interior / outlying islands. The perfect way to do that is on a day trip to Nusa Penida. You can organise a day trip from most of Bali’s mainland beach suburbs (Kuta, Seminyak etc) – it’s not the cheapest Bali day trip but it could be the most memorable.

This post contains affiliate links — if you click one and buy something I’ll get a small cut but it won’t cost you any extra. Think of it as helping out your favourite (or maybe 10th favourite) travel blogger!

Things to See on a Day Trip to Nusa Penida

I’ll leave all the boring details on how to get there / the costs until later in this post – so first let’s look at what you can see on a day trip to Nusa Penida. We arrived early in the morning, found a driver (he was awesome – more on that later though) and headed to our first stop.

Angel’s Billabong

The word billabong is an Australian term for a small pond or lake. As Bali is swamped with Australians, it kind of makes sense that they’d start naming stuff eventually. Angel’s Billabong is a little rocky area which fills with water from the ocean. Sometimes waves crash onto the rocks in an aggressive fashion – people have been swept off the rocks and died here – so be careful! We were content with viewing it from the safety of dry land, but it did look like a cool place to swim (if you don’t mind hobbling over slippery rocks and possibly getting swept off to a watery grave). It’s a nice enough place, but there are better things lurking a short walk away.

nusa penida day trip klook

Broken Beach

Just around the coast from Angel’s Billabong lies Broken Beach, a circular pond thing where the ocean rushes below a rock bridge. It’s a cool place to walk around, but make sure to walk a little way around the rocks nearby for more ocean views. We even saw dolphins and manta rays swimming in the water below. It seems like a nice place to snorkel — check out this tour if you’re interested in swimming with mantas .

Kelingking Beach

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last year or two (or just dislike Instagram) you’ve probably seen numerous photos of Kelingking Beach. The viewpoint above the beach is an Instagrammer’s dream spot, but even for people that don’t feel the need to make their friends jealous with their exotic travel photos it’s still a great place to visit. There’s a dodgy path leading down to the beach but most people, including my wife and I, are content with the view from above. I did walk a little way down the hill and it wasn’t that bad. It is a long way down though and one slip and you’d be in trouble – beaches like this always look better from above anyway! You can keep walking a little way around the path above the beach for a different angle – there was a guy up a tree taking photos for people so we jumped on that bandwagon pretty quickly.

A surprisingly good lunch

If you’ve ever been on a tour in Southeast Asia which includes a lunch stop, you’ll be aware that they usually take you to the lowest quality / most expensive place they can find (it’s all about that commission). That wasn’t the case on this Nusa Penida Day trip. We stopped for lunch at Warung NG, a largish restaurant on the way to Crystal Bay (the last stop on our tour). The food was amazing – chicken strips and chips and chicken with white wine sauce. It was almost gourmet and was surprisingly one of the best meals we had in Bali.

Crystal Bay

Most tours, whether private or group, finish up at Crystal Bay at around the same time. It was packed and a bit dirty, but it was nice enough. We killed some time by lying in the shade, but I can’t help thinking there are better places than this. Ask your driver if it’s possible to skip it and go somewhere else (unless you feel like having a beer in the shade next to a slightly messy beach).

A day trip to Nusa Penida: The Details

  • Getting there: The best way to get to Nusa Penida is to first head to Sanur, where most of the boats leave from. There are all sorts of boats, from private to public and they all seem similar. If you can, stay in Sanur the night before and walk along the waterfront boat stalls in the afternoon and strike a deal. We got a return ticket for 350,000 IDR each, but I’ve heard of people getting it cheaper than that. You can also take a tour from most beach destinations in southern Bali – expect to pay anywhere between 700,000 and 1,000,000 IDR per person. It’s not a bad deal but you’ll get it cheaper if going from Sanur. The boat ride can apparently get quite rough, but we had no problems. It is kind of hard to get on and off the boats though and your legs will get wet! Rather take a tour? You can book once you’re in Bali or check out this one on Get Your Guide .
  • Organising a driver / motorbike: Assuming you aren’t taking a tour, your two main options for exploring Nusa Penida are renting a private car / driver or a motorbike. The roads are rough, and people have died on them – I wouldn’t recommend it for inexperienced riders. We opted for the driver and luckily we met Bryan, a friendly Nusa Penida local who spoke great English. He’s more than happy to take photos for people and it was almost like exploring the island with a friend rather than a tour guide. Check out his Instagram account and get in touch if you’re thinking of heading to Nusa Penida! We paid 500,000 IDR for the day and it was money well spent.

Nusa Lembongan

Another popular way of getting to Nusa Penida is to first head to Nusa Lembongan . They are close and if you have a few days it’s a good idea to check them both out. I went to Nusa Lembongan a week or so after Nusa Penida – check out my post!

Hi, Would you recommend to go to Nusa Penida with a 17 month old toddler? People seem to be ok driving a scooter with a toddler, what do you think?

Wednesday 27th of November 2019

Hey Meg, I guess it depends how confident you are on a scooter -- I wouldn't drive myself let alone a kid haha but it's different for everyone. It's easy to rent a car / driver though so that could be a safer and easier option. Enjoy your trip!

I have just returned from 2 weeks in Bali and I did this day tour and the pics do not do justice for this beautiful Island it is absolutely beautiful the only draw back is the state of the roads, they are absolutely appalling. If you have back problems this tour is definitely not for you ,but if you can stand driving on rough and I mean really rough roads than you will see that it is worth it stunning

P.S maybe if the tour companies along with the tourist put in a few dollars for every car or bike that travel these roads they could be fixed

@Jon Algie, I am going to Bali on 7 Nov this year. At present, I have had surgery on a very fractured elbow almost 3 weeks ago. I'm a fit over 70 yrs. Would it be recommended to go on the rough roads? I never knew about the roads till now.

Wednesday 3rd of July 2019

Hey Susan, yeah it's pretty rough, definitely wouldn't recommend renting a motorbike!

Nusa Penida Day Trips

There’s more than one way to enjoy paradise, and these Nusa Penida tours are evidence.

Nusa Penida

Pick your Paradise on Nusa Penida

It’s hard to come up with a list of the best reasons for visiting Bali, what with the perks being so plentiful. However, the region’s close proximity to endless islands all their own would definitely make the cut. Nusa Penida is a tranquil island upon the Indonesian archipelago, and there just so happens to be some really cool tours that specialise in it. Whether you want to embark on a full-day fast boat tour or spend the day swimming with manta rays is totally up to you.

Table of Contents

Take a Fast Boat

After getting transported from your own hotel, this Nusa Penida day tour picks you up by boat at Sanur Beach. By way of sea, you’ll make it to your local host on Nusa Penida, a small island known for its beautiful beaches and quaint atmosphere.

Kelingking Beach is the first stop on this tour, and rightfully so. It’s home to epic grassy peninsulas with unapologetic cliff faces jutting out over the Indian Ocean. In our opinion, it’s the perfect welcome to Nusa Penida, whose ecological aesthetic ought not to be missed.

Broken Beach, known to locals as Pasih Uug, also finds a spot on the tour’s itinerary. Crystal blue waters and one-of-a-kind land formations practically beg for a photo op. Meanwhile, Angel’s Billabong—a natural pool that swimmers can see far down into—leaves little to the imagination, and we love it.

The tour finishes up at Crystal Bay, a popular spot for travelers from all over. Here, you’ll see just why scuba divers and snorkelers never fail to frequent this majestic Indonesian island.

Swim With Manta Rays

If you’re aching for some underwater adventure, Nusa Penida is the place to be. Its submarine environment is absolutely breathtaking (and not just because there’s no air down there). By choosing this tour, you’ll get the chance to snorkel alongside manta rays and much more.

The snorkeling itself is not the only pro of this trip. The boat ride to each swimming site, complete with cliff-side views and coastal vistas, is a wonder in and of itself. It’s at these moments you may be most drawn to this nature lover’s paradise.

Manta Bay is a protected area on Nusa Penida. It’s saturated with plankton and—as such—massive and majestic manta rays, many of whom expand to a wing span of four or five meters. You’ll also get to snorkel at places like Crystal Bay, Toyapakeh and Gamat Bay.

An Indonesian buffet-style lunch will fuel you up before embarking on a journey through the mangroves. And whether you want to go by kayak, stand-up paddle board or gondola, well…the choice is all yours how to enjoy this Nusa Penida day tour.

Click here for prices and availability .

Keep in Mind Before You Go

For every tour, the safety of the travelers is of utmost priority. As such, professionals will review the sea’s conditions prior to each journey and adjust the itinerary accordingly. Whatever the case, make sure you come equipped with an attitude that’s conducive to ultimate exploration—you’re surely going to want it on these Nusa Penida tours.

Hidden waterfalls, epic sunsets, and cool beach clubs — here’s an un-Bali-vably affordable Bali itinerary to inspire your next getaway !

nusa penida day trip klook

Our last trip to Bali ( back in 2022 ) was a relatively short one, so we were excited to spend more time discovering the Island of Gods again!

This time, we went for more unique experiences — snorkelling with manta rays, discovering hidden waterfalls, and hiking an active volcano at sunset — most of which were surprisingly affordable.

If going off the beaten path without breaking the bank sounds fun to you, then check out our five-day Bali itinerary!

Aling-Aling Waterfall Trekking and Jumping

Aling-Aling Waterfall- Bali Itinerary

This Bali itinerary starts with a hike to Aling-Aling Waterfall . The sheer force of this 35m sacred waterfall left us drenched, but the gorgeous view (and photos) more than made up for it!

Woman jumping off Kroya Waterfall - Bali Itinerary

Activities here include cliff jumping and sliding down a natural waterslide at the nearby Kroya, Kembar and Pucuk Waterfalls.

We had a professional guide to ensure our safety before each stage, and there are ropes in the water to help you get back up. You can also wear a life jacket if you wish to.

Man sliding off Kroya Waterfall Natural Waterslide - Bali Itinerary

We started with the beginner-friendly 5m-tall cliff jump opposite Kroya Waterfall, before climbing back up to attempt the thrilling slide from the top of Kroya.

For a gauge of how forceful this natural waterslide is, I lost a contact lens during the 10m plunge!

Following that, we moved on to a 10m jump at Kembar Waterfall. This was honestly out of my comfort zone, but perhaps losing a contact lens made the height less scary 🤷🏻‍♂️

Woman jumping off Kembar Waterfall - Bali Itinerary

Since our form for the 10m jump wasn’t great, our guide advised us against the 15m jump down Pucuk Waterfall as we could injure ourselves. But if you’re confident and up for the challenge, definitely give the 15m jump a go!

*Note: Swimming, cliff jumping and rock sliding are prohibited without a guide.

Batur Natural Hot Spring

Drone shot of Batur Natural Hot Spring - Things to do in Batur

After an eventful morning, we headed for a soothing dip at Batur Natural Hot Spring to relax our minds, body and soul.

Man chilling at Batur Natural Hot Spring - Things to do in Batur

There are 10 pools here ranging from roughly 30°C to 40°C. The 40°C water was too hot for our liking, so we went for a short dip in the 30°C water therapy pool before having some fun at the children’s slide.

There’s even an adult swimming pool if you’d like to clock some laps.

Lunch at Rejeng Bali

Friends having lunch at Rejeng Bali - Bali Itinerary

Tucked away along an obscure path just around the corner from Batur Natural Hot Spring is Rejeng Bali — the perfect place for authentic local food like grilled fish or chicken with rice.

I was extremely impressed at how fresh my order of Grilled Fish with Local Sauce was. Truly value for money for just Rp55,000 (~S$5).

Mount Batur Sunset Hike

nusa penida day trip klook

Catching the sunrise from the top of Mount Batur is probably one of the most popular things to do in Bali.

But hiking at sunset meant we had the entire peak to ourselves! We didn’t have to cramp with 500 hikers or wake up at 1AM for our pick-up (yes, I know the pain 😭).

pic sunset on Mount Batur - Things to do in Batur

At 1,717m, it’s a moderate 1.5-hour ascent. While it’s possible to climb Mount Batur on our own, hiring a local guide was extra useful when it got pitch dark during the descent.

Refreshments for Mount Batur Sunset Hike - Bali Itinerary

The tour also included light refreshments like hard-boiled eggs, banana bread and beng-beng , a local chocolate-combo snack (yum), which added a cherry to the top when watching the sunset.

Just beware of monkeys, they might want some of your food too!

*Pro-tip: Pack a windbreaker as it gets pretty cold at the peak! (or be a daredevil and wear a singlet like Choo 😛)

Mount Batur Sunset Trekking Experience Cost:  From ~S$53/pax for a ~4hr experience Meeting point: Hotel pickup

Day 2: North Bali/Nusa Penida

We spent the morning chasing dolphins in Lovina before hopping on a fast boat to explore Nusa Penida on day two of our Bali itinerary.

Dolphin Watching in Lovina

nusa penida day trip klook

One of the most sought-after experiences in Lovina is dolphin-watching, so we were looking forward to it even though that meant getting out of bed at 5AM 😴

We sighted a few dolphins sporadically, but the beautiful sunrise we caught onboard made the experience even better!

Sunrise during Lovina Dolphin Watching Sunrise - Bali Itinerary

Other than watching dolphins, there’s also the option to add snorkelling to your package as well!

Lovina Dolphin-watching and Snorkelling Cost:  From ~S$10 for a ~2hr experience Tour timings: 6AM Meeting point: V23V+F9 Anturan, Kabupaten Buleleng, Bali, Indonesia

Lunch at Asian Pantry

Exterior of Asian Pantry - Bali Itinerary

Located 5 minutes by foot from Sanur Harbour , we stopped by Asian Pantry for lunch before boarding our ferry to Nusa Penida.

The cosy cafe serves a variety of Asian food with mains like Pad Thai (Rp60,000), Pho Soup (Rp70,000) and Teriyaki Bowl (Rp60,000). My favourite here was the Thai green curry with chicken and rice (Rp65,000) — fragrant and not too spicy.

Cost:  From Rp60,000/main (~S$5.40) Opening hours:  6AM – 8PM Address: 87H6+83 Sanur, Denpasar City, Bali, Indonesia

Tembeling Beach and Forest

Man swimming in Tembeling Beach and Forest Natural Pool - Bali Itinerary

Known for its crystal clear natural pools located at the bottom of a hidden ravine, Tembeling Beach and Forest is one of Nusa Penida’s best-kept secrets.

There was barely anyone here, making it a peaceful spot to chill and hang out with friends.

Man on swing at Tembeling Beach and Forest - Bali Itinerary

Getting to Tembeling Beach is an adventure in itself. The first option is to trek 40 minutes from Temeling Street . It’s a pretty steep hike, but we promise it’d be worth the cardio!

To save time though, we paid a local and rode pillion (Rp100,000/pax) from Temeling Street . We arrived at a hut after 10 minutes and from there, it was another 10-minute trek to the first natural pool.

Sunset at Smoky Beach

Scenic landscape at Smoky Beach - Best places for Sunsets in Bali

Speaking of lesser-known spots on Nusa Penida, catching a sunset at Smoky Beach was one of the highlights of this trip — since there was barely anyone else here 🙂

Friends watching the sunset at Smoky Beach - Best places for Sunsets in Bali

With beautiful cliffs and a lush green field, it’s a great place for a picnic while waiting for the sun to set. If you’re lucky, you might even spot some cows grazing here!

Cost:  Free Opening hours:  24 hours How to get there: Drive 40mins from Tembeling Beach, then walk 10mins to the sunset spot

Day 3: Nusa Penida

The best decision we made when planning our Bali itinerary was to spend a full day in Nusa Penida snorkelling and exploring its beautiful cliffs!

Manta Ray Snorkelling

Bali Indonesia Snorkeling Experience in Nusa Penida Manta Ray - Adventurous Things to do in Bali

Manta ray snorkelling at Manta Point was undoubtedly one of the best things we did on this trip!

We were blessed with clear waters and it was dope to see Mantas up close for the first time. The Mantas were HUGEEEE and I even freaked out a little when I nearly swam head-on into one 😂 .

Friends going Manta Ray Snorkelling - Things to do in Nusa Penida

Our tour also included two other stops to swim around corals and spot turtles. But trust me, you wouldn’t wanna leave once you start sighting the Manta rays 😄. We ended up spending ~1.5 hours at Manta Bay and gave the corals a miss.

*Note: Life jackets are provided for those who aren’t confident with swimming in open waters.

Lunch at Sunny Cafe Penida

Sunny Cafe Penida - Bali Itinerary

After a fun morning out at sea, we dropped by Sunny Cafe Penida for some food — ranging from smoothie bowls (from Rp69,000) to pasta (from Rp59,000) and all-day brunch (from Rp55,000).

Smoothie Bowl and Vegan Tachos at Sunny Cafe Penida - Bali Itinerary

I’m a huge pasta lover but decided to go for something refreshing like the Green Smoothie Bowl (Rp69,000) — the frozen banana blended with avocado was exactly what I needed after a morning under the burning sun.

Friends having a meal at Sunny Cafe Penida - Bali Itinerary

With plenty of drinks and desserts, the cafe is also a great option for some light refreshments throughout the day. There’s even a 1-for-1 cocktail (from Rp85,000) happy hour at 4PM and 8PM daily for those interested!

Cost:  From Rp40,000/main (~S$3.60) Opening hours:  7AM – 10PM Address: 8FCQ+9R Ped, Klungkung Regency, Bali, Indonesia

Paluang Cliff

Scenic view at Paluang Cliff - Bali Itinerary

After a 40-minute drive, we arrived at the scenic Paluang Cliff which features breathtaking views of Kelingking Beach and its surrounding landscapes.

Cliff views at Paluang Cliff - Bali Itinerary

Of the seven designated photo spots here, I like this spot 👆 (to the left of the entrance) the most — it has a panoramic view of the island’s beautiful rugged cliff edges!

There’s even a stall here selling drinks and ice cream for those who’d like something to cool off from the heat.

Entrance fee:  Rp30,000/pax (~S$2.70) Opening hours:  24 hours How to get there: Drive 40mins from Sunny Cafe Penida

Kelingking Beach

Drone shot at Kelingking Beach - Bali Itinerary

The next stop on our Bali itinerary needs no introduction, Kelingking Beach is one of Nusa Penida’s most visited attractions.

But here’s something different — instead of heading to its pristine turquoise beach, we went upwards for a stunning lesser-known cliff view. Just make a right turn and follow the path upwards when you spot this hut (pictured below) with green graffiti.

Checking one off my bucket list always feels good, but doing it a little differently made it more memorable 😊

Day 4: Kuta/Canggu

We got out of bed at 5:30AM to catch a fast boat back to Sanur 😴. But hey, at least the rest of the day in Canggu and Kuta was exciting!

Brunch at Dedari Cafe and Eatery

Exterior of Dedari Cafe and Eatery - Best cafes in Canggu, Bali

When looking for a place to grab brunch after arriving in Canggu, Dedari Cafe and Eatery’s blend of good reviews and aesthetically-pleasing interior immediately stood out.

Food at Dedari Cafe and Eatery - Best cafes in Canggu, Bali

We arrived with growling stomachs but left with our tummies (and hearts) full from the food and friendliness of the staff 😊 My pick of the lot was their tasty carbonara pasta (Rp58,000) and thirst-quenching tropical slimmer smoothie (Rp42,000).

The staff also recommended visiting for dinner for those who’d like to catch a beautiful sunset at the outdoor seating area. (It’s actually true after checking photos on Google!)

Cost:  From Rp50,000/main (~S$4.50) Opening hours:  10:30AM – 10PM Address: 85V8+CQ Kerobokan, Badung Regency, Bali, Indonesia

Waterbom Bali

Drone shot of Waterbom Bali - Bali Itinerary

Next on our itinerary is one of Kuta’s most iconic attractions — Waterbom Bali . After spending half a day here, we finally understood why it was voted Asia’s top waterpark ! Check out this video of our last visit to Waterbom Bali for a sneak peek.

Friends racing down Twin Racers at Waterbom Bali - Bali Itinerary

With 22 incredible waterslides, thrill-seekers are bound to have a field day 🤩 I loved racing my friends down the Twin Racers for its combination of speed, thrill and fun.

If you have nerves of steel (unlike me), free fall 26m into nothingness at Smash Down 2.0 — the park’s most terrifying slide.

Friends having fun in Lazy River at Waterbom Bali - Bali Itinerary

There’re also plenty of options to chill here — floating in the Lazy River was our favourite, or grab a bite at one of four restaurants within the waterpark.

Dinner at Vue Beach Club

Drone shot of Vue Beach Club - Bali Itinerary

Canggu has plenty of beach clubs worth checking out. But if we had to pick one, it’d be Vue Beach Club for its beautiful sunset, selection of drinks and amazing atmosphere!

Drinks at Infinity Pool at Vue Beach Club - Bali Itinerary

We caught the sunset in the spacious Infinity Pool while enjoying some Martini (Rp110,000/glass), before having a sumptuous dinner in a private cabana.

My favourite dish was the Shakshuka in Rendang Style (Rp225,000) — the heavenly combination of local and African cuisine is good for sharing among groups of three to five.

Shakshuka Rendang at Vue Beach Club - Bali Itinerary

I used to think that beach clubs were all about partying, but after spending 4 hours here, I realised that having some quiet time and good convos with friends is also possible 😌

Entrance fee:  ~S$11.60/pax via Klook Opening hours:  9AM – 10:30PM Address: 84JR+HG Canggu, Badung Regency, Bali, Indonesia

Day 5: Canggu/Ubud

Before catching our flight home, we squeezed some wellness activities into our Bali itinerary for maximum satisfaction!

Zero Gravity Floatation Therapy by Solace Float

Men enjoying tea at Solace Float Bali Itinerary

Float for 90 minutes in a sensory deprivation tank and let your tensions dissolve into weightless relaxation — sounds cool, doesn’t it? 😎

Tonic options at Solace Float - Bali Itinerary

At Solace Float ‘s Zero Gravity Floatation Therapy, we started our session by consuming one of four tonics designed to “enhance” our experience in the tank. Plus, we could also choose from a soundtrack of waves, rainforest or meditation music to listen to.

It may look scary but the experience was actually pretty peaceful — it was very dark inside, but floating on water while listening to sounds of nature was great for clearing our minds… and of course, taking a nap 😛

Zero Gravity Flotation Therapy at Solace Float - Bali Itinerary

After defying gravity for 1.5 hours, we washed up before enjoying a cup of complimentary tea at the lounge. There are even books here for those who’d like some entertainment.

Half-day Wellness Tour to Ubud

Man Meditating at Pura Meninging Temple - Wellness tour in Ubud

The last item on our itinerary was a half-day wellness tour to Ubud — Bali’s cultural centre. First up, a trip to Pura Meninging Water Temple where we took part in a purifying holy water healing ceremony.

We started with a quick 3-minute meditation session. Then, we had to take a sip from each running fountain, splash it on our faces and give our heads a good rinse before moving on to the next one — it was a rejuvenating ritual 😌

Next, a 5-minute drive to Puri Pandawa Palm Reading where we got our fortunes told by a traditional Balinese healer.

The healer made some predictions about our future by reading our palms and the Mandalas that we coloured. Most were on point, but I’ve got to admit I was sceptical when she said I aspired to be a monk when I was young (it ain’t gonna happen) 😅

Getting Around Bali

Travellers boarding a private car charter in Nusa Penida Bali - Ubud Travel Guide

The most convenient way for groups to explore Bali and Nusa Penida is to rent a car since the island doesn’t have a very well-developed public transport system.

Getting around mainland Bali: Ride-hailing apps like Gojek and Grab are available and ideal if you plan to just visit two or three places a day. But be prepared to wait up to 15 minutes before getting one.

If you plan on hitting four or more spots in a day, a better option is to book a Bali Private Car Charter (~S$50/car for 4 passengers for 10 hours). We appreciated having a driver ready to go at a moment’s notice, especially when we were rushing.

Getting around Nusa Penida: If you’re travelling in a group, booking a Nusa Penida Private Car Charter (~S$57/car for 5 passengers for 8 hours) is the best way to get around since Gojek and Grab aren’t available in Nusa Penida.

If you’re travelling solo, renting a scooter is still an option here although the roads can be bumpy and not recommended for unseasoned riders.

Taxi drivers were offering us a 30-minute ride for an astonishing Rp300,000 (~S$27), so having a private car charter was the more affordable option.

Travelling between mainland Bali and Nusa Penida: We pre-booked the Semabu Hills round-trip fast boat tickets (~S$20.40/pax) for our transport between Bali and Nusa Penida.

The one-way journey takes around 35 to 40 minutes and since the ride wasn’t too bumpy, we even sneaked in a quick nap 😜

*Note: Pre-book your ferry tickets early to secure your preferred timing.

*Pro-tip: Save on a day trip to Nusa Penida with the Nusa Penida Day Tour with Optional Snorkelling from Bali (from ~S$55/pax for a group of 6). It includes round-trip fast boat ferry tickets, private charter with an English-speaking guide and an option to add-on snorkelling at Crystal Bay.

Tips for Planning Your Bali Itinerary

Semabu Fast Ferry - Bali Itinerary

1)   Remember to book your pre-trip essentials  — including the   Semabu Hills round-trip fast boat tickets   between Bali and Nusa Penida, airport transfer , tra vel insurance and e-SIM .

2) Get the Klook Pass Bali to save on attractions and tours — Up to 18 activities available, including Waterbom Bali entrance tickets and the Nusa Penida Day Tour in this Bali itinerary

3) Download the  Gojek and Grab apps on your phone  — for getting around Bali.

Friends at Batur Natural Hot Spring

4) Apply sunblock  — the sun burns in Bali. If you think Singapore is hot, wait till you get a taste of the Bali weather.

5) Exchange sufficient IDR for your trip  — most restaurants, cafes and supermarkets accept card payment. But small local restaurants like Rejeng Bali only accept cash. Plus, it’s always good to bring some spare cash for emergencies.

6) Pay the Bali tourism tax in advance for smoother entry — If you’re travelling to Bali from 14 Feb 2024, you’ll need to pay a Rp150,000 (~S$13) tourism levy upon entry. This can be paid online or through the Love Bali app, available on Google Play and the App Store .

*Note: The tax needs to be paid upon each entry into the Bali province. This includes returning day trips to nearby islands like Lombok and Gilli Islands.
