When is the best time to visit India?

The best time to visit India largely depends on the region you plan to explore, as the country experiences diverse climates and weather patterns. Here's a breakdown of the seasons and the ideal time to visit different parts of India:

Winter (October to February):

  • This is generally considered the peak tourist season in India, especially for popular destinations like Delhi, Agra, Rajasthan, and Kerala.
  • The weather is pleasant and mild, with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 25°C (50°F to 77°F) in most parts of the country.
  • It's an excellent time for cultural sightseeing, exploring historical monuments, and enjoying outdoor activities.

Summer (March to June):

  • Summers in India can be scorching, particularly in the central and northern regions. Temperatures often exceed 40°C (104°F) in places like Delhi, Rajasthan, and parts of South India.
  • Hill stations and higher altitude destinations, such as Shimla, Darjeeling, and the Himalayan region, provide relief from the heat and are popular summer retreats.
  • If you're planning to visit Ladakh or other high-altitude regions, this is the only time when roads are accessible due to the snowmelt.

Monsoon (June to September):

  • Monsoon season varies across different regions of India, with heavy rainfall and high humidity.
  • Coastal regions like Goa, Kerala, and parts of the Western Ghats receive heavy rainfall, which can hinder outdoor activities and beach visits.
  • However, this period showcases lush green landscapes, and it's a great time for nature enthusiasts, as many wildlife sanctuaries and national parks come alive with flora and fauna.

Shoulder Seasons:

  • The months of February, March, and September to November are considered shoulder seasons, as they transition between the peak tourist seasons.
  • During these months, you can often find more affordable prices, fewer crowds, and pleasant weather in many parts of the country.

It's important to note that India's vast size and geographic diversity result in variations in weather patterns. Before planning your trip, research the specific region(s) you intend to visit to ensure you choose the best time based on their specific climatic conditions.

Overall, the winter months of October to February are generally considered the best time to visit India for most regions, as the weather is pleasant and ideal for exploring the country's rich cultural heritage and popular attractions.

Tourist Visa: If you are planning to visit India for tourism, sightseeing, visiting friends or relatives, or participating in short-term courses or conferences, you will typically need to apply for a Tourist Visa (e-Visa or regular visa). The e-Visa is available for citizens of many countries and can be applied for online. The regular visa requires submitting an application at the Indian embassy or consulate in your home country.

Business Visa: If you are traveling to India for business-related purposes, such as meetings, conferences, or trade activities, you will need to apply for a Business Visa. This visa is also available as an e-Visa or a regular visa, depending on your nationality.

What is the local currency in India, and can I use credit cards?

The local currency in India is the Indian Rupee (INR). It is advisable to carry some local currency for small purchases, local markets, and areas where cash is the preferred mode of payment.

Credit cards are widely accepted in major cities, upscale hotels, restaurants, and larger establishments. Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are the most commonly accepted cards. However, it's important to note that smaller establishments, local markets, and rural areas may prefer cash transactions.

To ensure a smooth experience when using credit cards, here are a few tips:

Inform your bank: Prior to your trip, inform your bank or credit card provider about your travel plans to India. This helps prevent any potential issues with your card being flagged for suspicious activity when used abroad.

Carry multiple payment options: It's advisable to carry a mix of payment options, including cash, credit cards, and a debit card. This provides flexibility in case a particular card is not accepted or encounters issues.

Keep cash for emergencies: While credit cards are widely accepted, it's wise to carry some cash for emergencies, smaller establishments, or remote areas where card payment may not be available.

Check for card acceptance: Before making a purchase, inquire whether credit cards are accepted. Look for signage indicating card acceptance, or ask the establishment directly to avoid any surprises.

ATM availability: ATMs are readily available in major cities and towns across India. They are a convenient way to withdraw cash in the local currency. However, be cautious when using ATMs in remote or unfamiliar areas and prioritise using ATMs located in secure and well-lit areas.

Remember to keep your credit cards and cash secure while traveling. Use ATMs located inside reputable banks or secure locations, and be cautious of card skimming devices.

It's always a good idea to carry some local currency for smaller transactions, tipping, and places where card payments may not be feasible. Be sure to exchange your currency at authorised currency exchange counters or banks to ensure fair rates and avoid counterfeit notes.

Lastly, keep track of your expenses and retain receipts for reference and potential reimbursement purposes.

Will I require any vaccination for my visit to India?

Yes, it is recommended to have certain vaccinations before traveling to India to protect yourself against common diseases. The specific vaccinations you may require depend on factors such as your current immunisation status, the duration of your stay, the areas you plan to visit, and your individual health condition. It is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional or travel health clinic at least 4-6 weeks before your trip to discuss your specific needs. They can provide personalised advice based on your medical history and the latest recommendations.

Here are some vaccinations commonly recommended for travellers to India:

Routine Vaccinations: Ensure that your routine vaccinations, such as measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTaP), polio, and seasonal influenza, are up to date.

Hepatitis A: Hepatitis A is a viral infection transmitted through contaminated food or water. It is recommended for all travellers to India, as there is a risk of exposure.

Typhoid: Typhoid fever can be contracted through contaminated food or water. Vaccination is recommended, particularly if you plan to explore rural areas or have a longer stay in India.

Hepatitis B: Hepatitis B is a viral infection transmitted through contact with infected blood or body fluids. Vaccination is recommended for travellers who may have close contact with the local population, require medical procedures, or engage in activities that may increase the risk of exposure.

Tetanus-Diphtheria-Pertussis (Tdap): If you haven't received a tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis booster in the past 10 years, it is advisable to get vaccinated before your trip.

Polio: Polio is still endemic in some parts of India. Ensure you have received a polio vaccine as per your country's guidelines.

Japanese Encephalitis: This vaccine is recommended for travellers planning to spend a month or longer in rural areas of India, particularly during the monsoon season, when the risk of mosquito-borne diseases is higher.

Rabies: If you plan to spend significant time outdoors, work with animals, or will be in remote areas where medical help may not be readily available, you may consider a pre-exposure rabies vaccination.

It is important to note that these are general recommendations, and your healthcare provider will assess your specific needs based on various factors. They may also provide advice on other health considerations such as malaria prophylaxis, traveler's diarrhea prevention, and general health and safety measures during your trip to India.

Can I drink the tap water in India?

No, it is generally not advisable to drink tap water in India. The tap water in most parts of India is not considered safe for drinking due to the presence of bacteria, parasites, and other contaminants that can cause waterborne diseases. To stay healthy and avoid any potential illnesses, it is recommended to drink bottled water or use water purification methods.

When in India, opt for sealed bottled water from reliable brands that can be easily found in grocery stores, hotels, and restaurants. Make sure the seal is intact before consuming the water. Additionally, you can use water purification methods such as boiling, using water purifying tablets, or using water filters to make tap water safe for drinking.

Yes, India has a rich cultural heritage and diverse traditions, and it's important to respect and follow certain cultural norms during your visit. Here are some key cultural norms to keep in mind:

Dress Modestly: India is a conservative country, particularly in rural areas and religious sites. This shows respect for the local customs and helps you avoid unwanted attention.

Removing Shoes: When entering places of worship, homes, or certain establishments, it is customary to remove your shoes. Look for signs or follow the lead of others to determine if you should remove your footwear.

Greetings and Respect: Indians place a strong emphasis on respect and courtesy. When meeting locals, a traditional greeting is "Namaste" with folded hands. It's polite to use respectful language and address people by their titles (such as "sir" or "madam") until given permission to use their first name.

How does the rooming work on tours?

Small group tours in India typically involve a set itinerary where you travel with a group of fellow travellers and a tour leader/guide. Accommodation arrangements  vary depending on the specific tour you choose. Here are some common aspects of rooming arrangements on small group tours:

Shared Rooms: In order to promote camaraderie and facilitate interaction among group members, most tours arrange shared accommodation. This means you will be paired with another member of the same gender from the group to share a room. Roommates may sometimes change periodically throughout the tour.

Single Supplement: If you prefer to have your own room and privacy, you may have the option to pay a single supplement fee. This additional fee allows you to have your own room for the duration of the tour. However, please note that single supplements can vary in cost and availability.

Roommate Matching: Tour operators usually offer roommate matching services, where they try to pair you with a suitable roommate based on your preferences, such as age range. This can help ensure compatibility and a more enjoyable experience for all participants.

Rooming Preferences: When booking your small group tour, it's important to communicate your rooming preferences to the tour operator. If you have specific requirements or preferences, such as sharing with a friend or a specific roommate request, it's advisable to inform the tour operator during the booking process.

It's important to carefully read the tour details and inclusions provided by the tour operator to understand their specific rooming policies. If having your own room is a priority, make sure to inquire about the availability of single supplements and any associated costs before booking your tour.

Keep in mind that while sharing a room with a fellow traveller can be a great way to meet new people and build connections, having your own room provides more privacy and flexibility. Consider your preferences and the dynamics of the tour when deciding whether to opt for a shared room or pay for a single supplement.

Remember to communicate your needs and preferences clearly with the tour operator during the booking process to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable accommodation experience on your small group tour in India.

India Tours & Vacations

Travellers looking at a shrine carving with their guide in Delhi, India

There’s probably no other country on the planet that blazes its way into your memory like India.

Years later, you can still hear the morning calls of the chai wallahs; see smoke curling over the Ganges during a golden Varanasi sunrise , and smell the rich aromas of simmering curry. A lot of India tours rush from highlight to highlight, ticking them off in a blur of temples and tikka. But not us. Our India holidays are more about spotting Bengal tigers in Ranthambhore or Panna National Park, hanging with nomads in Jaisalmer, meeting the holy men of Pushkar, or hunting down the best street eats. This isn’t just the India you see on postcards. This is India as it is. Raw, bizarre and totally addictive.

India is one of the world’s oldest civilizations with a culture steeped in ancient beliefs and traditions. Religion also plays a massive role in everyday life with 80% of the population practicing Hinduism while the remaining 20% is divided into Muslim (India has the world’s second-largest Muslim population), Christian, Sikhism and Buddhist populations.

At its core, India remains a deeply conservative nation; however, it has been touched by rapid modernization and Western influences in recent years. Some families still adhere to a traditional structure (especially in more rural areas) with generations living under the same roof, the eldest male at the head of the family and arranged marriages. But this is becoming less and less popular, particularly in larger cities, where Western ideas and societal shifts heavily influence the culture due to things like Bollywood films.

While some behavioral standards remain the same (public displays of affection are still taboo), it’s important to keep in mind that with more than one billion people speaking over 122 languages across 28 states and seven territories, it’s impossible to describe one unified culture for the entire nations and the character of India’s people can vary greatly from city to city.

Geography and environment

India shares land borders with   Bangladesh ,   China , Pakistan,   Nepal ,   Myanmar   and   Bhutan , and also has wide stretches of coastline along the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean. As the seventh largest country in the world, India is home to a variety of terrains - the Himalayas of the north, the deserts and plains of the west, the fertile waterways of the south and the hills and forests of the east. Development is occurring at a rapid pace, with India's large, sprawling cities consisting of everything from five star hotels to shanty towns, and with modern malls and cinemas sitting comfortably alongside bazaars and street food vendors. A trip through India will reveal a diverse range of landscapes, villages, cities and environments.

History and government

Early history.

Humans have inhabited India for as long as 75,000 years, with early civilizations flourishing as early as 3300 BC. Over the centuries, India both influenced and was influenced by other nations and kingdoms, with far-reaching trade, conquest and migration spreading the subcontinent's culture far and wide. Empires rose and fell over the centuries, with the wealthy Mughal Dynasty ruling most of India by 1600. At the same time, different European nations started showing an interest in India after being brought to the area for trade. The Portuguese, Dutch, British and French all had vested interests in India, with the British East India Company being given the rights to trade in India in 1617. The 1857 rebellion and War of Independence culminated in the decline of Mughal rule and were considered the first movements against the British Raj's heavy-handed rule of the country.

Recent history

By the 1920s, India's independence movement had grown considerably with Mohandas Gandhi leading mass movements based on passive resistance and non-cooperation against the British Raj. Although it took decades, India finally gained independence in 1947. More recently, India has seen dramatic societal changes mainly due to modernization and globalization. A new wave of prosperity has seen the rise of the middle class, with men and women entering into new work roles in telecommunications, manufacturing and business. India's large cities are dealing with the mass migration of rural citizens, who are moving to the city to seek better employment, education and opportunities for their children.

Festivals and events in India

Many of India’s biggest festivals are religious and follow either the Indian lunar calendar or the Islamic calendar. The dates may change each year, but the fervor of celebration never does. Some of the best and biggest festivals to keep an eye out for in India are:

Holi (Festival of Colour)

Take a whole lot of colored powder and water, add thousands of happy people not afraid to get a little (or a lot) dirty and you have Holi – a technicolor Hindu celebration that marks the beginning of spring and the triumph of good over evil. Celebrations take place across India in either February or March.

Diwali (Festival of Lights)

India’s biggest festival – meaning ‘rows of lighted lamps’, people decorate their homes with colorful lights, candles are lit and firework displays take place across the country. The celebrations are particularly spectacular in Varanasi, where illuminated candles and earthen lamps are floated down the Ganges River as fireworks light up the sky. This five-day festival takes place every October or November.

Gujarat Kite Festival

Large, colorful and unusual kites flood the skies of Gujarat each January to commemorate the start of summer and the beginning of harvest. Purchase your own at Patang Bazaar, a famous kite market, or just watch the others dance through the sky.

Mumbai Ganesh Festival

The birth of the elephant-headed god, Ganesh, is celebrated for 10-days each August or September in cities across India, but Mumbai takes it to another level. An incredible energy can be felt throughout the city as people pack the streets for a massive party and an elaborate statue of Ganesh is paraded around.

Pushkar Camel Fair

Thousands of camels (and their owners dressed in their finest garb) descend upon Rajasthan's Pushkar for the annual camel fair. Camels are traded and raced, acrobats and performers entertain crowds at a nearby fair, while finely dressed males and bejeweled females take the chance to let their hair down.

The same advice is also given to heterosexual couples (and couples of all other sexual orientations) as public displays of affection other than hugging and holding hands are generally frowned upon.

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. Our past adventures

Over 3 back to back groups with an average group size of 95 PAX, covering 400 kilometres through the deserts of Rajasthan is the biggest cycling charity event in the country. We are proud to be part of the event as the event handler by providing a fully supported cycling challenge for over 350 women from UK. From welcoming the group from Delhi, we took care of the transportation, provided multi geared performance bikes, camping in the desert and heritage palaces to a celebratory dinner at Jaipur with the traditional celebration. This would have been impossible without the support of the best mechanics in the country, our experienced team of cycling guides, marshalling team, housekeeping team and event managers.

CHARITY CHALLENGE 2012

British Adventurer Conrad Birch and his ROARRallies Team partnered with Kalypso to realise their dream of driving vintage cars through the ‘Great Arc’ longitude followed by Sir George Everest in early 1800s to survey the Indian sub-continent. Driving from Kanyakumari at the southern tip to Mussoorie in the foot hills of Himalayas through the logistically difficult interiors of the country required mammoth organisational support all through, and camping at various locations enroute.

“The best mobile camp in the world” said Conrad Birch, speaking of the Cottage tented camps, set up in the middle of nowhere, with flush toilets, hot water, electricity, washer man, barber, and a sit down fine-dining set up, shifted across and set up perfectly at a distance of 600 km in less than 48 hours!

GREAT ARC RALLY 2009

Norwood, two centuries old British charity with the patronage of Her Majesty the Queen, chose Kalypso Adventures to run a cycling challenge through picturesque Kerala. Two back to back challenges of 90 cyclists each, riding through undulated ghat roads, culturally rich villages and along beaches, rubber plantations and cardamom plantations, totalling a distance of 450 km in 5 days through the most densely populated state of India, was a mega event of a life time.

“This was the best ride we ever had”, mentioned Judith Barnett, Norwood’s representative, while speaking of the faultless administrative and logistics machinery run by the ever smiling and omnipresent Kalypso Team.

NORWOOD CHALLENGE 2006

100 Students from across the globe participated in a 7 day Multi Activity Challenge with us at the Munnar Hill Station. We organized a Multi Activity Challenge by splitting the groups into 5 teams and positioning them at different destinations. Each participant had to trek from one location to the other, make shelter, camp overnight, make bamboo raft and cross a lake, cycle to the next destination, kayak across the river and reach a summit to complete the challenge. Considering that these were students, we had a risk assessment plan, a CASEVAC team and experience trek leaders leading them through the challenging terrain.

YOUTH ADVENTURE CHALLENGE 2008

Or in this case, we are ready to take on many challenges - at the same time. We were able to pull off fully supporting 3 cycling challenges happening simultaneously in Kerala. During a period from 26 Oct 2017 to 5 Nov 2017, we ensured complete and quality logistics support to three challenge teams from UK, who cycled parallelly on three different routes, touching varied destinations in Kerala. It saw us oversee a team of Marshals for directing the teams on road, providing the lead vehicle, ensuring hot lunches enroute, smooth transfer of the teams’ luggage, providing the right sized cycles to list a few aspects we ensured. We partnered with Classic Tours and the ever enthusiastic group of 45, called the Truants, enjoyed their challenge with us in Kerala, as they raised funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust. We brilliantly helped Charity Challenge- UK, conduct their challenge to raise funds for Care for Kids. Their week long challenge through Munnar, Periyar and Alleppey saw 33 challengers push themselves for a worthy cause. And finally 23 cyclists rode for Norwood, UK who made their way through Munnar, Kumarakkom and Kollam.

Suffice to say that Team Kalypso delivered on all counts during the eventful 10 days by ensuring quality logistic support to the 100 odd challengers. Multitasking at its best thanks to a ‘ready – for – any - challenge’ - team Kalypso!

KALYPSO : READY TO TAKE ON ANY CHALLENGE

Solo travel in India

Every single one of our small group journeys has been designed to suit solo travellers: it varies depending on the trip you choose, but you can bet that around half of the travellers on your trip will be travelling alone. So, if there’s a trip you’ve always wanted to take but haven’t had the chance, don’t let being a solo traveller be the thing that puts you off.

Best time to go to India

Generally speaking, the best time to visit India is between October and April. During this time the weather is warm (but not too hot), dry, and sunny with clear blue skies. From December to February, Delhi can be a bit foggy but the temperatures are typically cooler.

If spotting exotic wildlife is high on your agenda, head to India in April or May for the best chance of sightings. Water becomes scarce during the dry season so animals tend to congregate around the water holes to drink and bathe.

The monsoon season usually occurs from May to September. During this time it’s generally wet, rainy and humid, but it is a good time to visit the north, especially the desert state of Rajasthan and the mountainous region of Ladakh where roads become passable after the snowy winter.

To witness the spectacular Pushkar Camel Fair, book your Rajasthan trip towards the end of November, or to immerse yourself in the colourful festivities of the Hemis Festival, book a Northern India trip in June.

Guided visit of sarnath - from $26.00.

A day of exploration begins with a tuk-tuk ride from Varanasi towards Sarnath, where your local guide awaits. One of the holiest Buddhist sites in the world, Sarnath is the birth place of Buddhism where Lord Buddha preached his first sermon. For nearly 1700 years the site remained a centre for great learning, a place of pilgrimage, and a Vihara (Monastery) for monks and scholars. Guided by a local expert, discover the archeological ruins of the monastery, the ancient Dhamek stupa. Explore the museum at Sarnath and the sacred Maha Bodhi Tree. Visit temples constructed by the buddhist people of Sri Lanka, Thailand and Japan. Stop to admire the Buddha statue located at the Thai Buddha vihara. Some eighty feet tall, it is considered to be the tallest standing Buddha statue at Sarnath. After three hours of guided exploration, your guide will bring you back to your awaiting tuk-tuks bound for your hotel.

Heritage and Spiritual Walk in Old Benaras - From $20.00

Set off an engaging walking tour of Old Varanasi City. Wander through puzzling alleys, vibrant bazaars, explore temples, and gain a deeper understanding of Varanasi’s history, culture, and spirituality. The Varanasi Heritage Walk begins from the Godaulia intersection and our first visit is to the Mata Kali Temple, one of the highest revered places of worship in the city. It was built by the Maharaja of Varanasi in 1885 and features carved pillars that capture visitors’ attention. Then we will visit the Ganesh temple before heading to the Tedhi Neem Gali for a walk through the colorful market dotted with many different shops. Afterward, we will go towards the Kashi Vishwanath corridor and witness Varanasi’s principal cremation site – the Manikarnika Ghat. The sacred fire here has been alive for the last 3000 years. Next, we’ll walk past the Alam Gir mosque, visit the shrine of a Hindu Yogi and mystic Guru Shri Tailang Swami, the Mangla Gauri Temple, and the Sankatha Mata Temple. Towards the end of the walk, we will try the famous white butter toast with tea at Laxmi Chai shop or Dwarika Lassi. During the walk our guide will focus more on the local life in Varanasi and its philosophical and cultural values. Witness pilgrims singing or chanting and gain an understanding of the importance of Varanasi in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.

Jaipur Cycle Tour - From $35.00

With its many lanes and organized layout, Jaipur is the perfect location to explore by bicycle. Choosing to cycle through the city on this morning tour will introduce you to sights, sounds and smells that a vehicle just can't match, so grab a helmet and jump on your bike! Navigate the streets of the 'Pink City' with the help of your experienced guide, starting the day with a traditional Indian yoghurt drink of Lassi. Marvel at the architectural wonders as you enter the walled part of the city and stop at the City Palace to visit the Govind Dev temple. Wander through the historical spices and sweets market, stopping for tea and a tasty snack of pakoras before heading towards the majestic Albert Hall Museum where the tour ends. Taxi transfers from the hotel to the starting point and from the finishing point back to the hotel are included in the price of this cycle tour.

Orchha Cooking School - From $15.00

As a place of spiritual importance and impressive architectural sites, it’s not hard to see what makes Orchha so unique. This is your chance to also taste what makes this town so special. You’ll learn how to concoct a warming cup of masala chai and a tasty snack of vegetable pakoras. Enjoy this as your hosts demonstrate how to make three different curries. Indian Getaway Tour

Indian Getaway

Overall, we enjoyed our tour of India. The culture there is so different than any other place we have travelled, leaving even seasoned travelers a bit shell shocked. Highlights were the Taj, never expected to be so impressed with it as we have seen a lot of architectural wonders in our travels, and the night spent in the village of Tordi Garh. Downside, some of the hotels were not too clean, especially in Varanasi. That hotel was foul. We did book a basic trip, and were expecting some rougher travel, but not that bad. Also, the night trains were a bit of a trial. It would have been nice to be able to upgrade to better berths. And finally, out of 7 people, 5 got sick. That includes our guide!

Golden Triangle Tour

Golden Triangle

Great tour of a very small portion of India. Our guide Anu was awesome! I took a tour as a solo female traveler and was so glad I did. I wouldn’t have wanted to navigate all of that in my own and G Adventures took care of everything.

The organisation of the tour was excellent. I was picked up from the airport and welcomed in Indian style with flowers that touched my heart. The driver Rinku was the perfect companion during all the trip - not only as driver, but also like a personal assistant. Guides was different in each city and all of them were amazing. I highly recommend this tour and this agency.

Colorful India with Taj Mahal & Rajasthan Tour

Colorful India with Taj Mahal & Rajasthan

Good trip that could have been better. Provider failed to provide basic details. I felt that I had to chase down the answers. (before trip I asked for list of hotels; pushed to get taxi from airport arranged) Then on the trip only the general itinerary from the web page was provided. Destinations were good. Hotels were good. Driver was very good. Some guides were better than others. Failure to disclose that each day had a shopping trip was unacceptable. Guides were also invested in the shopping trips that made us feel that they were less there on our behalf. We lost valuable vacation time with each shopping stop. Stops for lunch was mediocre at best and were prearranged. The costs at the lunch stops were much more than other meals on our three week trip. Food was bland and expensive.

Golden Triangle Tour With Ranthambore Tour

Golden Triangle Tour With Ranthambore

The best part about this tour was Rakesh, our driver! This tour gives you a personal driver and personal your hides to see India. Ours, Rackesh, was the best and would highly recommend requesting him. The sights were wonderful and food was fantastic. Definitely upgrade to 5 star hotels, which are equivalent to 2-3 star by US standards.

Golden Triangle Tour with Varanasi Tour

Golden Triangle Tour with Varanasi

An amazing adventure that provided great moments showing glimpses of what India is really is. Everyone was kind, informative, and welcoming. Would recommend it to anyone interested in an immersive trip where you will learn a lot, move non-stop, and have a true Indian feel. The only thing I would change would be an upgrade to the overnight trip so it is in Business Class. 2nd class was not bad but having a closed private space would have been much more accommodating for sleeping. Shout out to our amazing driver from Delhi who went above and beyond and to the tour guides who were walking encyclopedias.

As always, and I’ve been on many trips with Countryside India within India and abroad over the past many years , this one was just as thoughtfully and interestingly planned. Right from landing in and drop-off at Srinagar airport and everything in between over the week was impeccable. Besides daily sightings from the Drenmo Lodge and the Malem hill, a couple of extremely interesting and educative day trips added to the whole experience. The stay at Drenmo Lodge was special with an excellent team looking after us in a cosy, well-appointed space with all amenities and excellent cuisine that almost turned us into 🐻’s! Seema our tour leader from Countryside India and Muzzamil and his team at the Lodge ensured that we had the ultimate experience at an altitude of 3,200 mts. Well done Countryside India, looking forward to traveling with you again soon. Nandita Amin, Baroda. Nov 2023
This was my second visit to Kenya and first one for my wife. Mansi had assured us that it would be an experience to remember. However I was not prepared for such a mind-blowing experience. Firstly, the entire arrangement, including travel, lodging and boarding was planned meticulously. The hotels and resorts during the tour were incredible. It was a surreal experience in walking along with Giraffes, Zebras and Bush bucks inside the resorts. The tents were luxurious and had all the amenities and were very hygienic. The staff at all hotels and resorts was very friendly and welcoming. The food was excellent. I am a strict non-vegetarian and my wife is vegetarian. Both of us had plenty for our liking. There was Indian food at all placees. However I enjoyed the African variety as well. Our driver-guide Yusuf was very good. He had excellent knowledge of the bush, the way of the animals and was very clever in locating game and placing the vehicles at spots which would give the best viewing and photograph opportunities. The highlight of our trip were the last four days at Ashnil Mara. The wild life sightings were incredible. It was an exhilarating feeling to witness the wild life stories – the swooping down of the African fish eagle to catch the fish, the leopard hunt, the lions and hyenas faceoffs, the love and care elephant mothers were showing to their babies, and so much more ! The Sundowner and Bush breakfast were a pleasant surprise and we enjoyed them a lot. There was a hiccup on our way back when the Kenya Airways pilots went on a strike. However Milind (Bhide) jumped in personally to guide us through the situation, and we managed to land back in India without loosing a day ! Africa is in our blood now ! Can’t wait to go back ! Looking forward to new adventures with Countryside ! -Abhay Chitnis, CEO & Co-founder at BotsRule Pvt.Ltd Kenya Safari
Summitting Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, which is worlds tallest free standing mountain was on the to do list for a long time. We were a group of 6 who went in January 2023 on this trek, managed by Countryside. The trip was meticulously planned, right from planning the trek to actual travel, Countryside team was closely involved in the process. Their guidance on preparing for the trek, conditioning, the gear to carry etc. ensured all of use were able to reach the summit successfully. On the trek, the support staff was amazing, food was delicious and even the team managed to bake a cake to celebrate the birthday of a fellow trekker in the remote location. Special mention of Kiran who was with us right from planning the trek, preparing for trek and during the trek, summitting along with us. Back from Kili, have already started thinking about the next trek to plan with Countryside… 🙂 - Anand Bhadkamkar, Group CFO & Prseident- Strategy at LS Digital Mt. Kilimanjaro Jan 2023
EBC trek was one of my bucket list items. Having traveled with Countryside many times before, I knew they were right choice for this trek. They provided us all the required information before booking and held online meetings with the group to clarify all queries. Everything was top notch, from the hotel in Kathmandu to providing us with the best lodges on the trek. Throughout the trek, they keep track of our health and give suggestions accordingly. Kiran was our Leader for this trek. He guided us well at every point, from helping us understand our pace, to helping us keep our day pack as light as possible and also giving us information on Nepal’s culture. He made sure the entire group bonded well. Along with Kiran, the entire team of guides (Karma, Ganesh, Prem and Vinod) made sure that all participants were comfortable. Overall, very happy with the entire experience. Looking forward to many more holidays with Countryside. Mr. Rohan Kunkalienkar- EBC May 2023
We are five Americans (three with Indian origin) who went to Sikkim and North Bengal. This was our sixth trip with Countryside. Similar to all of our ratings in the past, we rate our trip as A+. First, Countryside knows exactly what we desired. We wanted bird watching, stay with Sikkimese families, experience the tea plantations, see blooming springtime flowers and do hiking so that we can see Kanchanjunga and other mountains. The planning, locations, guides, all were perfectly done for this 22-day trip. We had to cancel our hiking plan, and change to car driving / stay in new tea plantations due to daily hailstorms. Countryside literally arranged a new plan B within 24 hours. That was simply incredible!! They were always available 24/7 for support, advise and any last-minute changes. In fact, I do not think that we will ever go to India for any adventure without countryside. Salute to all of them and huge thanks. Nitin Anturkar- Trip to Sikkim & North Bengal
Going to Ladakh ….all alone….for a 52 years old lady like me (I am fit)….was a major safety issue for my husband. Hence, the obvious choice was Countryside as we had already done two trips with them and we have total trust in Milind. My seven days trip in the second week of September 2019 was so well organised…. from the driver to pick up and drop at the airport (at an early hours) to the hotels booking and detailed itinerary for each day….everything was to fit the Tee…!!! I travelled worryless. Food was excellent wherever I stayed, in the hotels as well as at the Tent accommodation in Pangong. Mr. Newang Dorjey (less of a driver and more of a care taker) was the best travel guide. Pooja from Countryside was available for me anytime I needed. I even, did not visit Countryside’s office as the phone calls and mail communications with Pooja were flawless. In short…..”Everything Was Just Perfect and I Appreciate The Efforts From Countryside!” -Amisha Rane Sohal
Amazingly organized trip of 22 days in Himachal. All the destinations and accommodations selected were unique and non touristic, making us discovering some real hidden gems that we would have never discovered otherwise. Countryside’s flexibility and availability was impeccable, and they really took care of each small detail in terms of logistics, safety, and comfort. They allowed us to change plans even on the same day when we decided to spend extra days in Tirthan as it was too beautiful we could not leave. Local guides selected for us were always well prepared and fully available. 100% would recommend! -  Ms. Beatrice. Unseen Himachal Feb 2023

Adventure travel is hugely popular in India, as there is such a wide range of possible activities. The Himalaya region is one of the top adventure travel destinations in India . However, there are plenty of options in the south as well! Here's what you can do and where.

Trekking and Mountaineering

TripSavvy / Alicia Erikson

India's mountain ranges provide plenty of trekking and mountaineering options for all fitness levels, whether you'd prefer a leisurely day hike or a challenging walk along the frozen Zanskar River (the Chadar Ice Trek). These top treks in Ladakh are popular. In addition, the Indian government recently announced that the Siachen Glacier in the Karakoram range north of the Nubra Valley is now open to experienced mountaineers. The states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand in northern India also offer excellent trekking opportunities, such as the delightful Valley of Flowers . For a pristine mountain trek in Uttarakhand, head off the beaten path at Kalap . If you really want to get away from it all and like a challenge, try a remote trek that's still under the radar. For guided treks of all descriptions, some of the best companies are Ibex Expeditions , Peak Adventure Tours , Garhwal Himalayan Explorations , and Himalayan Frontiers .

  • Where: The Himalaya region.

Rafting and Kayaking

Going on a rafting expedition in India combines picturesque scenery with exciting thrills and spills. Raft down renowned rivers, such as the holy Ganges, by day and camp at pristine beaches by night. If you have a real adventure on your mind, there's nothing like the extra adrenaline rush from whitewater kayaking. Companies providing these activities include Splash Ladakh, Mercury Himalayan Explorations , AquaTerra Adventures , and GoaRafting .

  • Where: The Himalaya region including Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand ( Rishikesh ), and Sikkim. Also in Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra .

Paragliding

If you've ever wondered what it's like to fly like a bird, paragliding is the answer! There are two ways to go about it -- learn how to do it yourself or take a tandem joyride with a professional. Companies offering paragliding joyrides in India include Billing Paragliding Association , Fly Bir Billing , Nirvana Adventures, and Indus Paragliding . For those wanting to learn how to paraglide, Nirvana Adventures is the oldest and most reputed paragliding school in India. Temple Pilots is also highly rated.

  • Where: Bir Billing in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh . Kamshet, between Mumbai and Pune, in Maharashtra.

Water Sports

And interesting markets defining the culture of the place.

Golden Triangle as the name depicts, the memories gathered during the tour were also golden, and this was only possible because of great planning done by India Adventure Holidays. The transport and accommodation provided was in a good condition. The cab driver was a really nice guy and guide who happily took us for sightseeing and local shopping. On the whole it was a remarkable tour and I am grateful to India Adventure Holidays for this great experience.

Adventure Tours in India

Due to a diverse topography, adventure tours in India are of different types. These will help you get over the boredom induced by the unidimensional city life. Whenever you want a unique and insightful vacation, go for such thrilling engagements as they will make you feel joyous. You could enjoy them alone, with friends or like a fun family outing. There are many adventure destinations in India, and you can go for sightseeing in and around them.

Adventure Destinations in India

Adventure trips can be taken to a number of destinations in the country, with each one being famous for a particular activity.

Ladakh: The rough terrain and natural beauty of Ladakh have made it an admirable destination for adventure lovers. With an average elevation of over 10000 feet above sea level, Ladakh has a cold arid climate.

Rishikesh: This sacred place is located in the state of Uttarakhand, and is another well-known spot to indulge in thrill-inducing sports like rafting, rock climbing, rappelling and more. Rishikesh can be visited in any month as the weather here is always pleasant.

Lonavala: It is about 65 km from Pune, and is a popular hill town. With a moderate altitude of approximately 2050 feet, the topography here is not too rugged, and the weather does not become extreme. Hot air ballooning is popular here.

Kamshet: This destination lies in the Sahyadri Ranges; hence its altitude is moderate. Even in the peak of winters, the temperature rarely drops to below 10 degree Celsius, making it a nice place to enjoy the season. Paragliding is done here from October to April.

Kolad: Another amazing place to relish thrilling sport of rafting, this little village lies on the banks of the Kundalika River. Away from urban centres and immersed in tranquillity, it is an ideal getaway if you want to relax.

Goa: Those who want to have an exciting time along the seas should definitely come to Goa. It is a perfect place to indulge in some fabulous and exciting water sports.

Apart from the above-mentioned places for adventure trips in India, there are hordes of other sites too to plan thrilling expeditions.

Adventure Activities in India

With a plethora of exciting engagements in the country, such excitement-developing sports are bound to continue gaining admiration.

Treks : You can trek at a number of destinations like Ladakh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir.

Motor Bike Expeditions : Biking trips on the Leh-Manali highway and through South and West India are hosted by loads of travel agencies as they are highly admired.

River Rafting : The state of Uttarakhand and the village of Kolad are two prime destinations for rafting.

Hot Air Ballooning : Jaipur in Rajasthan and Lonavala near Mumbai are the two most sought after places for hot air ballooning. Both these destinations have weather conditions, which are favourable for the engagement.

Scuba Diving : To see the underwater world from up close, travel to Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the state of Goa or the town of  Murudeshwar in Karnataka. You will get scuba training from PADI certified instructors at all these sites before you head out to the sea.

Wildlife Safari : The country has loads of protected areas like Corbett, Bandhavgarh, Kanha and Pench national parks, where wildlife safaris can be availed.

Camping : You can camp wherever there are untouched environs like hills and forests. There are many such places in Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh, which you can pick.

Enjoy Adventure Trips in India

Seasonality

The adventure tours in India you want to go on will determine the perfect season for them.

Treks: Summers are generally preferred for trekking because of the pleasant weather high up in the mountains, except for the Chadar trek, which can only be done in winters.

Bike Expeditions: Biking in Ladakh should be done in summers while winters are ideal for journeys through West and South India.

Rafting: The rainy season is perfect for rafting on the Kundalika River, whereas the time before and after the said season is when rafting is organised on the Ganga River.

Hot Air Ballooning: The best season for this activity is between October and April primarily and it is hosted at 5:30 am and 4:00 pm because of ideal wind speeds.

Scuba Diving: You should scuba dive when the seas are calm, which is generally the case in the non rainy season.

Wildlife Safari: In India, wildlife safaris are only possible when it is not raining. Most protected areas are closed during monsoons due to the damage caused to roads.

Camping: As camping involves living in tents, you should always go for the engagement when the weather is not too hot or not too cold.
