aida cruise in dubai

Today Dubai Harbour welcomed its first cruise ship the AIDAcosma from the German cruise line Aida, officially starting its 2022/23 cruise season. AIDAcosma will use Dubai as a homeport departing on 7-night Orinet voyages to Muscat, and Abu Dhabi. AIDAcosma is one of the largest cruise ships within the AIDA fleet and is a first-of-its-kind liquid natural gas (LNG) powered ship with a capacity of over 5,500 guests.

To mark the opening of the cruise season, DHCT Management along with public and private sector stakeholders will exchange plaques with the Ship Captain, a maritime tradition, to commemorate its maiden call.

Throughout the season, more than 300,000 cruise passengers are expected to arrive at the Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal, marking accelerating growth for the cruise industry in the country.

“We are excited to return to Dubai Harbour – this time round with the maiden call of our youngest fleet member AIDAcosma. Through AIDAcosma, we are continuing on our path to green cruising and are elated to be collaborating with Dubai Harbour to do so. We are sure our guests will have a great time, as they set sail on a tour of the Orient this winter 2022/2023, specifically at Dubai Harbour with its line-up of entertaining events and activities, alongside the magnificent Dubai skyline,” Alexander Ewig, Senior Vice President Marketing & Sales at AIDA Cruises said:=.

As the owning-company and curator of Dubai Harbour, the diversified investment firm Shamal Holding is the driving force behind making Dubai Harbour an exceptional seafront district. The cruise terminals, which are part of the incredible Dubai Harbour development, showcase the spectacular and beautiful Dubai Harbour skyline to guests and offer a wide array of amenities and services for passengers and crew.

“Today is a very special day for us. This is not only the first time we have an LNG-powered cruise ship making its way to the city, but also a new cruise season that we look forward to with renewed excitement and anticipation. As we get ready to see full fleets get back in service, we believe there is great scope for extraordinary growth in the region. This includes more destinations, enhanced experiences and new types of cruise travellers. After the success of our last cruise season, we have continued to make investments across Dubai Harbour and Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminals and will also be extending our cruise season into the summer months of 2023 for the first time, with ships calling well into the month of June for overnight port stays for passenger turnaround. We look forward to continuing to play our part in welcoming more passengers and ships, as we aim to contribute to the region’s cruise tourism sector.” Abdulla Binhabtoor, Chief Portfolio Management Officer, Shamal Holding, the owner and curator of Dubai Harbour said.

“As Dubai continues to make waves across global tourism, the arrival of the first cruise travellers at Dubai Harbour for the new season will further reinforce Dubai’s position as a leading cruise tourism hub in line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai to make our city the world’s most sought-after and visited destination. The continuous efforts of Shamal Holding to enhance Dubai’s cruise tourism sector by developing world-class projects, infrastructure and facilities such as the Dubai Harbour is a testament to the tireless efforts of our valued stakeholders and partners to expand Dubai’s diverse destination proposition. As sustainability and decarbonisation are crucial elements of Dubai’s tourism strategy, we welcome the arrival of eco-friendly cruise ships like the Aida Cosma, further boosting our efforts to become a major sustainable tourism destination. We are also proud to be consistently included as a key port of call by the world’s largest and most popular ocean liners, highlighting Dubai’s global reputation as the ultimate cruise gateway to the region.” H.E. Issam Kazim, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing, commented.

The infrastructure at the Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal comprises two terminal buildings that offer passengers and crew a safe, comfortable, and seamless experience. Designed to process over 3,250 passengers per hour, the highly efficient and modern terminals are located on a pier stretch of over 910 meters and can accommodate a complete passenger turnaround of two mega cruise ships simultaneously.

The purpose-built terminals ensure simplified and streamlined immigration, as well as customs screening processes, with the dedicated access routes for passengers and crew, facilitated by Seaport Passenger Boarding Bridges, allowing uninterrupted flow between the ship and the terminal.

AIDAprima and AIDAvita ( CruiseMapper ) were the first cruise ships to dock at the new Dubai Cruise Terminal on March 16, 2021.

AIDA ships dock for the first time at the new Dubai Cruise Terminal

The ultra-modern terminal facility in Dubai Harbor, which is located between the islands of “Bluewaters” and “The Palm Jumeirah” in the heart of Dubai, extends over 120,000 square meters. The most popular sights, beautiful beaches and world-famous landmarks of the city such as the 250-meter-high Ain Dubai ferris wheel or the Burj Al Arab are just a stone's throw away. The two international airports are also very easy to reach.

AIDA Cruises is offering seven-day trips to the Orient from Dubai between the end of November 2021 and mid-April 2022. Thanks to a stay of several days, AIDA guests have the opportunity to discover the largest metropolis in the United Arab Emirates on various excursions. Other destinations include Abu Dhabi and the fascinating Muscat in Oman. Pleasant summer temperatures in winter and a moderate flight time of just under six hours are further unbeatable arguments for an oriental cruise.

All AIDA trips up to summer 2022 can be booked in the travel agency, on the Internet at www.aida.de and in the AIDA customer center.

The United Arab Emirates have been one of the destinations of the AIDA fleet since 2006. Together with its local partners, the cruise company has developed the region into one of the most popular cruise destinations for German vacationers in the winter months. In 2018 the Carnival Corporation entered into a strategic partnership with Shamal Holding with the aim of developing Dubai into the most important center for sea tourism in the region. Part of the agreement between the two companies also included the construction of the Dubai Cruise Terminal, the future main hub for the passenger switching and transit activities of the Carnival Corporation in the region, where the first test run with AIDAprima ( CruiseMapper ) and AIDAvita took place.

Emirates, AIDA Cruises renew their partnership for a further two seasons

MoU will focus on sharing relevant data and insights to improve service delivery

Emirates AIDA

Dubai: On the sidelines of the first day of ITB Berlin, Emirates and AIDA Cruises have renewed their partnership for a further two seasons, in line with Dubai’s efforts to significant grow its cruise capacity.

"Emirates will explore a number of opportunities with AIDA Cruises for joint marketing, operational alignment and strategic planning around flight schedules from across its network, in addition to enhanced transportation solutions between Dubai International Airport and Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal," the flag carrier said in a joint statement.

"The partnership will continue to focus on sharing relevant data and insights to improve service delivery, providing dedicated support teams for cruise passengers, and facilitating a smooth check-in process at Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal. The airline will also dedicate capacity for the next two seasons to ensure continued momentum to meet the demand for cruise packages to Dubai."

The MoU was signed by Adnan Kazim, Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer, Emirates Airline; and Felix Eichhorn, President of AIDA Cruises.

Adnan Kazim commented on the renewed partnership: “We’re proud of AIDA Cruises’ long-standing commitment to Dubai, when they were one of the first cruise liners to home port in 2006. We are readying the business for another robust cruise season in Dubai, and through the support of partners like AIDA Cruises anchoring in our home city and hub, we’ll continue to strengthen Dubai’s position as an attractive gateway for winter cruising.”

"The Arabian Gulf is one of our most popular winter destinations due to its moderate flight times, pleasant summer temperatures and many hours of sunshine. Combined with the new state-of-the-art terminals at Dubai Harbour within easy reach of the city's attractions and excellent airport connectivity, our cooperation with Emirates will further enhance the attractiveness of this destination for our guests with tailor-made flight options," said Felix Eichhorn, President of AIDA Cruises.

AIDAprima has been operating to Dubai Harbour since 2021 and can accommodate up to 3,200 passengers. This season, passengers embarking and disembarking from Dubai can look forward to diverse itineraries that include destinations like Muscat, Doha, Sir Bani Yas and Abu Dhabi.

Dubai has been a first mover in joining up the entire travel and tourism ecosystem to facilitate hassle-free entry and visas for cruise passengers, seamless handling at ports which includes access to Emirates check-in desks at Dubai Harbour along with a host of other amenities dotted across the entire air and ground journey. Travellers have the added advantage of disembarking at one of the world’s most iconic tourism destinations, with landmarks and attractions that suit every taste, age and budget.

The 12 Emirates check-in counters in Dubai Harbour allow passengers who are disembarking from their cruise ships to fully check-in up to 4 hours before flight departure with the convenience of exploring Dubai without their luggage before heading directly to the airport and breezing past most formalities before their flight.

Last year, Emirates transported around 400,000 cruise passengers using Dubai cruise terminals. The city welcomed over 166 ships during the last cruise season, making it the region’s biggest port of embarkation and most popular call for cruise liners. The city expects an increase of 23 per cent more cruise passengers for the upcoming season.
