A limited number of in-person rush tickets will be available on the day of each performance for $40 per ticket when the Nederlander Theatre box office opens (Monday through Saturday at 10 AM and Sundays at 12 PM). Maximum of two tickets per person, subject to availability.

Tickets to SHUCKED begin at $69.75 but prices vary depending on time of the year, day of the week, and location within the theatre.

was Tony-nominated for his performance as Damian in the original Broadway cast of Mean Girls . He played the role of Elder McKinley in The Book of Mormon on Broadway after originating the role on the first national tour. Isabelle McCalla

originated the role of Alyssa Greene in The Prom (OBC). She also previously starred as Jasmine in Aladdin both on Broadway and the North American Tour. A ten-time Grammy® nominee and CMA Awards “Song of the Year” recipient, Clark is one of her generation’s most respected and celebrated songwriters and musicians. Her songs include Kacey Musgraves’ “Follow Your Arrow,” Miranda Lambert’s “Mama’s Broken Heart,” The Band Perry’s “Better Dig Two,” and Hailey Whitter’s “Ten Year Town.” She has most recently penned songs with and is a featured artist on Ashley McBryde’s critically acclaimed “Lindeville” project. Shane M c Anally

Shane mcanally.

has written 48 number one songs, won three Grammy® Awards, and been named the Academy of Country Music’s Songwriter of the year twice. In 2022, Shane became the most nominated songwriter in CMA history. He has written songs for John Legend, Blake Shelton, Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, George Strait, Luke Bryan, Miranda Lambert, Halsey, Gwen Stefani, the Jonas Brothers, Reba, and countless others. As a producer, Shane has worked with superstars like Kacey Musgraves, Dolly Parton, Kelly Clarkson, Willie Nelson, Sam Hunt, Walker Hayes, Kelsea Ballerini, and Carly Pearce. In 2012, McAnally founded SMACKsongs publishing, whose songwriters and artists have collectively written over 70 #1 songs, and SMACK management which was responsible for the meteoric rise of Walker Hayes in 2021 and the record-breaking single “Fancy Like.” In addition, Shane is the co-president and co-owner of Monument Records (a partnership with Sony Records), and also starred for two seasons on NBC’s “Songland” alongside Ryan Tedder and Ester Dean. When Alex Newell won a Tony Award the actor made history as the first nonbinary person to win in the acting category. During Newell's acceptance speech the actor said, “thank you for seeing me, Broadway. I should not be up here as a queer, nonbinary, fat, Black little baby from Massachusetts. And to anyone that thinks that they can’t do it, I’m going to look you dead in your face. That you can do anything you put your mind to.”

“I had a teacher say that my work ethic wouldn't amount to much and I wouldn't be successful,” said Newell after winning a Drama Desk Award for playing Lulu in Shucked . In fact, Newell began to believe the teacher when auditioning for colleges. “I got rejection letter after rejection letter after rejection letter,” says Newell. “ I didn't think that I would ever get this. So to get here now is a brilliant thing.”

Jeryl Brunner: When you sing “Independently Owned” in Shucked , the audience goes bonkers. In the midst of you singing, they give you a standing ovation. What is that like for you?

Alex Newell: Crazy. I’m singing for three minutes and just trying to catch my breath in that moment. I’m holding that note till the cows come home. It's lovely having that visceral response. One of the things about my career is that I want people to feel things when I sing. I don't want you to think that it is just pretty or sounds good. I want to offer something cathartic, that makes you think about something. And to have that is so beautiful.

Brunner: In your Drama Desk acceptance speech you talked about the teacher who said you wouldn’t amount to much. and you took on those feelings. What kept you going?

Newell: I believe the work started to speak for itself. And I just never gave up. I knew I wanted it and I had to get it.

Brunner: Why was it cool to win a Drama Desk Award?

Newell: Because, it's being seen. And especially this year, when we've gotten rid of the gender categories. [In 2023, the Drama Desk updated its categories to be gender-free.] It’s beautiful because it's making space for people like me and saying that we're just as talented as anybody else.

Brunner: What went though your mind when hen you learned about Shucked?

Newell: I was sitting on my couch eating chips and someone sent me a text message writing, “Hey, do you want to do be on Broadway in the spring?” And I wrote, “ send it to me.” I fell in love with it. Robert Horn, excuse my French, is fu#ki#g genius. His writing is so brilliant and pinpoint sharp. I am grateful for it.

Brunner: And what do you love about Lulu?

Newell: She reminds me so much of myself along with any southern woman. My mother and father are both from Alabama. So it's nice to have that whip smart, entity around all the time.

Shucked , the pun-filled, corn-fed comedy that surprised critics (favorably) and early on seemed destined to become a sleeper hit, will play its final performance at Broadway ‘s Nederlander Theatre on Sunday, January 14, 2024, producers have announced.

Shucked , which received nine Tony Award nominations last spring and eventually won one (for featured actor Alex Newell), began previews March 8 and opened April 4. When it closed on January 14, it will have played 28 preview performances and 327 regular performances.

How Alex Newell, the Non-Binary and Gender Nonconforming Star of Broadway’s ‘Shucked,’ Decided to Compete for Supporting Actor at the Tonys

Each night at Broadway ‘s new musical-comedy “ Shucked ,” audiences are treated to the sweet (and pun-filled) story of Cobb County residents Maizy and Beau, who are forced to postpone their wedding when the corn stalks that fuel their small rural town are ravaged.

But the show’s undeniable breakout is Maizy’s cousin Lulu, a local whiskey distiller who convinces her too-innocent relative to travel to Florida to find a way to save their crops.

So it’s no surprise, especially to those who watched the actor on “Glee” and “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” that the words Tony nominations and Newell are frequently mentioned in the same sentence. Since Newell is gender nonconforming and uses he/she/they pronouns, the big question has been which category they’ll be nominated in at the Tonys. Non-binary and gender nonconforming actors are able to select between the gendered categories, and Newell tells Variety they ultimately wanted to be considered for supporting actor.

“I went based off the English language. Everyone who does acting is an actor. That is genderless,” she says, wearing a slouchy sweater and ripped jeans in their dressing room at the Nederlander Theater before a recent performance.

As for Lulu, the character that Newell plays in “Shucked,” they felt an instant connection to the role because she “reminds me so much of myself. I’m turning 30 and I’ve been so independent my entire life.”

Newell glances up at the two small, bedazzled picture frames — one of corn and the other of the show’s patron saint, of sorts, Dolly Parton — above the couch where she’s sitting.

There’s one question I’ve been wondering since I saw “Shucked.” What is it like to get a mid-show standing ovation?

I don’t notice it sometimes. I used to get ovations for “Once on This Island,” but this one is a little different. For “Once,” there were only 600 seats in the theater, and this one has 1,500. So that wall of sound is different. I’m so exhausted by the end of the number because I’ve just spent a minute and a half screaming to the back row. But it’s really cathartic to have that visceral response. On television, you don’t get that instant gratification.

Is it hard not to crack a smile?

Sometimes. A couple nights ago, there was someone in the dead center, right behind the conductor who was queening out and screaming “Yes, Alex, you better work! You better sing!” It was louder than me, and I had a microphone. It was hard because it was a very funny moment.

From a technical perspective, what is the key to enunciating so clearly during a barn-burner like “Independently Owned”?

It really comes down to the training. Your words have to be clear, especially with the southern dialect in such a wordy song. There was a time that I had a clipboard because I was like, “I will never remember these lyrics.” It used to be more words, but I couldn’t breathe. It’s really hard.

How were you first introduced to the show?

I was sitting on my couch eating a bag of chips, and I got a text message from our [musical director] being like, “Hey, do you want to be on Broadway in the spring?” And I was like, “Sure, what is it? Send me the materials.” I remember reading the script and actually laughing out loud. That doesn’t happen.

Did you have to audition for “Shucked”?

Yes, I had a director session and the entire creative team was there. I was the terrible, self-deprecating actor who walks into the room like, “I know none of these words. I’m so sorry if I fumble.” It was one of the most comfortable director sessions I’ve ever done. I came back the next day to do a chemistry read with John Behlmann, who plays Gordy, and that was all she wrote. And now I’m here.

Broadway is currently filled with revivals and movie adaptations. What is the appeal of doing an original musical?

There are no expectations. We don’t have to live up to somebody else. My first Broadway show was a revival, and I had many a women who I looked up to my entire youth who played that role before me… Kecia Lewis-Evans, Sharon D. Clarke. That was the expectation. I even had an expectation for myself. I was like, “I have to live up to those that have come before me.” Now, I’m creating Lulu for whoever is to come after me. I love that the weight is lifted. It’s a braggadocios statement, but I am the standard.

There’s been a lot of speculation about Tony nominations. How did you decide which category you wanted to be considered in?

How do you feel about non-binary actors who chose to withdraw from Tony consideration to protest gendered acting categories?

I find it admirable. There’s a flip side that’s heartbreaking, but that was the only option for someone who does not feel either. It should be a wake-up call. Change is inevitable and it will happen, but we need to move a little faster.

Is there a conversation you wish people were having about gender categories at awards shows?

Yes, because it’s a bigger thing that has to change. I see both sides of the coin. Having one category alienates a lot of people as well. As much as we want to sit here and say that change is going to happen, a lot of these developed characters always go to men. I think the larger conversation is, how do we make it more inclusive?

Are awards shows meaningful to you?

I can’t sit here and lie and say “No, they’re not meaningful.” I spent half of my life watching the Tonys, Oscars, Emmys and Golden Globes. It’s everybody’s dream. I think holding up a mirror to our industry and showing them some of their flaws and errors might actually create a lot more change than we think.

Do you have any favorite musical numbers from past years at the Tonys?

Anytime I’m down, I will 1,000% turn on Jennifer Holliday — I call her my auntie, she came last night — singing “And I’m Telling You.” When you leave, I will probably turn it on and watch.

What was it like to perform for Jennifer Holliday?

I’ve looked up to her my entire life. She is singular. I treat her like she has my blood relative. She gave me a compliment after I performed at a Juneteenth event in Times Square. She was like, “I love how you make things your own. It’s reminiscent but so uniquely you.” It meant the world to me. She walked out last night and said it again.

Have you been excited about anyone else who has come to see the show?

Reba! A single mom who works two jobs! Who loves her kids and never stops! I love Reba. She’s stunning. I don’t think there’s a person on this planet who doesn’t like Reba McEntire.

How do you wind down after performances?

Some nights I’m more tired than other nights. Sometimes it’s truly going home and watching “Girls Trip” or “Real Housewives.” Something mindless and funny. But nine times out of 10, you’ll find me at Glass House Tavern. That is my favorite bar. It’s ridiculous how often I’m there. I live so far uptown that my car ride back is kind of decompressing.

What are you doing when your character isn’t on stage?

Lotioning my legs. I wish I were joking. I have so many lotions over there.

How do you spend your days off?

If you find me on Monday, it’s a mirage. Don’t look at me. Don’t talk to me. Don’t even breathe in my direction because I should not be outside. Girl, on Mondays, I’m in a cocoon in my bed, hoarding food and drinking water under my humidifier.

What do you do to preserve your voice?

I know it’s exciting, but is it also exhausting to be on Broadway?

If I can’t get at least one to two drinks after a performance and still sing the next day, I should not be doing it. I wanted to keep human qualities, like seeing your friends, because most of my nights are taken up. When I leave the show at 10 or 10:30, they are home already and they’re not going to come out and go to a bar with me. So, shame on them.

I saw you post on TikTok that people at the stage door have made comments to you about whether you hit your high note that night.

I get so many different comments. I’ve had people look at me dead in my face and say, “Oh, you didn’t sing the high note tonight.” And I said, “Yeah, because I did it seven other times this week.”

Is it true that you didn’t have formal voice training until you were on “Glee”?

Yeah. I was in every choir and a lot of my ear was emulating sounds, so that helped. But no formal training whatsoever… just trial and error.

When did you realize you could sing?

Everyone told me. And when everyone tells you something, you start to believe it. I still shock myself when I sing sometimes. I was singing backstage a couple nights ago, and I was like, “Oh, wow. That’s really good.” But I don’t want to get complacent about it. I’m always finding my voice. And she lets me know when she’s tired.

Would you ever act in a play on Broadway?

Oh, honey, I would thrive off of a play. To not have to scream to the back row for eight shows a week and just talk? I would love that.

Alex Newell Gets Shucked ...and a Tony Award

The former Glee star on their role in Shucked , their Tonys night, and that picture with Lea Michele .

Alex Newell owns the mid-show standing ovation. It’s a rare honor and seldom occurrence, one normally reserved for a night when a performer is really on fire. For Newell, it happens almost every evening. “It’s always very crazy, because you never think that that reaction is going to happen constantly,” Newell says over the phone. “When I did Once on This Island , it happened occasionally, enough that it was noticeable. But to have it happen each and every night almost is quite literally flabbergasting sometimes.”

Newell currently stars as Lulu in Shucked at the Nederlander Theatre. The musical, set in the fictional Cob County, follows Maizy (played by Caroline Innerbichler), a young girl who sets out to save the town’s main crop, corn, when it blights. Newell plays Maizy’s quick-tongued cousin and the whiskey distiller. Their show-stopping number, “Independently Owned,” comes in the middle of act one. Newell’s vocals fly over the set’s high rafters. For their performance in the self-proclaimed corniest show on Broadway, Newell received the Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical.

The Tony Award comes after years of hard work. Newell, first known for their appearance on the competition show The Glee Project , from which they won a guest spot in hit-show Glee , also starred in Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist on NBC. They also made their Broadway debut in 2017 in Michael Arden’s revival of Once on This Island , for which they received flowers in the theater world.

Just days after their win, Alex chats with ELLE.com to discuss their historic Tony win, the messages they received from their Glee costars, and the role they’re dying to play.

How are you feeling after your Tony Award win?

It’s all still so surreal. It’s hard, because I still have to do the shows at night. So, we’re still riding the high but still in the drama at the end of the day.

Harrison Ghee , who won Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for Some Like It Hot , and you were the first nonbinary actors to win Tony Awards. Many are saying this feels like a pivotal moment in the theater industry. What does this mean to you and what do you think these wins mean to the Broadway community?

We have to make space to tell stories that are different than what we actually know most days. Everyone’s story deserves to be told, I think, good, bad, ugly, a story can be told, as long as we’re respectful about it.

What’s also important is your character, Lulu, is not nonbinary in the show. What does that mean to you?

If I’m playing a character in a show, and there is no bat of an eye, there is no question about it, that is truly what art should be. I think it should be reflected, it should be respected. That’s my favorite part; no one questions Lulu at all, because that’s not what they’re supposed to do.

You worked with Michael Arden on Once on This Island . He won Best Direction of a Musical at the Tony Awards for his revival of Parade . What was it like to see him win that night?

Michael gave me my Broadway debut. So, he always has a special place in my heart. He’s worked so hard, and his vision is always so honest and so true. So, it was brilliant seeing him win.

Your Glee costar, Lea Michele, posted a picture of you and her together after the Tony Awards. What was it like seeing her there?

Wonderful. I mean, it was wonderful evening. I’m not going to talk too much about it, because I don’t need to, but it truly was. It’s nice. We all come from a very long way. Glee is just like family. We didn’t get to pick each other. We were in this exceptional kind of vacuum and microcosm, but at the end of the day, we will still support each other.

Have any of your other costars reached out to you? What have they said?

I just talked to Jenna [Ushkowitz] and Kevin [McHale] on their podcast. They were extremely excited and proud and happy. Amber [Riley] as well. It’s a family. I can’t stress that enough.

At ELLE, we like to ask performers about their “ show must go on ” moment, a moment where the community had to come together to make the show happen. What was that moment for you?

I’ve never been the biggest proponent on “the show must go on,” only because of safety and vocal health and all that other stuff that comes with it. Like, sometimes it can’t go on. I think more recently, all of our Maizys were sick in the building, and so we just rallied behind Robert Horn, who wrote our book, and Brandy Clark, who wrote our music with Shane McAnally, and they filled the role of Maizy. It was this magical moment with two of the writers, and it was just something that never happens. That was kind of beautiful. It shouldn’t have happened, but it was still kind of beautiful to watch and experience.

It's different because, you know, Robert Horn is a lovely Jewish man. Brandy Clark is a country star, and so they’re not the normal Maizy. They’re sharing this role. It’s just different to see Robert's mind and how he envisioned most of the lines said and his quirks about it all.

I think anyone that comes to theater is already a fan of it, unless they’re like a tourist just want to see something. The audience was just so welcoming. They thought that they were gonna get something and they didn’t get that. But, they got this. They weren’t biting and they ended up loving it, because it is so special. No one gets to hear the book writer and the music writer sing and read their own material ever.

What drew you to Shucked initially?

I read so many books that I got bored with. But, when I read this I just cackled out loud, because it was different. It was very different than any comedy that I’ve read in a very long time. So, that’s why I did this. The book is hilarious. And it’s only gotten better since I read it months ago.

How does Shucked mirror our society?

It’s holding up a mirror and seeing how things are, and how we need to be more of a community. Sometimes discounting something and throwing it away just means that it’s time for you to grow and realize that it’s always been great for you. You just need to respect it more.

You’ve said many times that your voice is your temple. How do you make sure your voice is taken care of every show? What does your self-care routine look like?

I call out. I do. I had a mentor say, “Would you rather sing today or sing for the rest of your life?” I take that to heart, because I'd rather sing for the rest of my life, not just the one performance.

What’s a role you’re dying to play?

Effie [White, from Dreamgirls ]. I've grown up with this role. It was the titular, quote, unquote, plus size Black woman role. I’ve known Jennifer Holliday for longer than I’ve actually “known known” her because I was such a fan. She was my idol. The role itself is that of this woman who was seemed less than just because she didn’t fit the stereotypical mold that this man thought she should have. And she just wanted to sing, all she wanted to do was sing and have all of her dreams come true. Just because she didn’t fit the mold that he thought, she was deemed lesser then. It’s the psychological thing of how darker skinned women, or Black woman in general, are seen as difficult just for speaking up sometimes. So, I think that that’s why I’ve always been drawn to it, because my life mirrors that a lot. I mean, I’ve had teachers look at me and say that my work ethic wasn’t good enough to do anything or be successful. So, having that in the back of my mind, I started to believe it, but I knew that it wasn’t true when all I wanted to be was a performer. My work ethic just didn’t apply to what you wanted it to.

How do you see yourself in Lulu?

The song speaks for itself, “Independently Owned.” I’ve worked my entire career over by myself. I’ve made this lovely, brilliant path for myself. I love that. I always say when dating, I don’t want anyone to come into my life, that’s going to subtract. I only want someone who’s gonna come in to add, because I am independently owned in my own life and career. So, I think we are parallel in that because we’re on this journey of finding something else that can add to us. That doesn’t mean we’re still not independent and that we do also want other things outside of that.

Alex Newell and More Will Lead New Musical SHUCKED on Broadway in March 2023

The musical, featuring a book by Robert Horn, will begin previews at the Nederlander Theatre on March 8.

New original musical comedy, Shucked, is headed to Broadway in Spring 2023! The musical which features a book by Tony Award® winner Robert Horn and a score by the Nashville songwriting team of Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally, will play at the Nederlander Theatre, with preview performances beginning Wednesday, March 8, 2023 for a Tuesday, April 4, 2023 opening night.

The production is directed by three-time Tony Award winner Jack O'Brien with choreography by Sarah O'Gleby, and music supervision, music direction, orchestrations, and arrangements by Tony Award nominee Jason Howland.

The musical comedy will star John Behlmann (Tootsie), Kevin Cahoon (The Who's Tommy), Andrew Durand (Head Over Heels), Caroline Innerbichler (Frozen North American Tour), Ashley D. Kelley (Bella: An American Tall Tale), and Alex Newell (Once On This Island). Additional casting will be announced in the coming weeks.

What do you get when you pair a semi-neurotic, New York comedy writer with two music superstars from Nashville? A hilarious and audacious farm-to-fable musical about the one thing Americans everywhere can't get enough of: corn. Shucked is the new musical comedy that proves sometimes tearing down a few walls, rather than growing them, is the only way to preserve our way of life. Shucked is about to turn Broadway on its ear and offer a kernel of hope for our divided nation.

In a joint statement, Robert Horn, Brandy Clark, and Shane McAnally said, "Shucked is a passion project. There was something about this idea, this style of humor and this music, that kept this little engine going. What will be on stage at the Nederlander is a story about how we all have the gift of heroism inside us, and about learning to open our hearts to those who are different than us so that growth can happen... and of course, about corn... because the basic thing that unity and acceptance need for survival, is a kernel of truth."

Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Monday, November 28 at 10 AM ET.

The design team for Shucked includes Tony Award winner Scott Pask (scenic design), Drama Desk Award nominee Tilly Grimes (costume design), Tony Award nominee Japhy Weideman (lighting design), Tony Award winner John Shivers (sound design), Academy Award winner and Emmy Award winner Mia Neal (hair and wig designer), Stephen Kopel, and C12 Casting (casting director).

Alex Newell is joining fellow Glee alum, Adam Lambert on the road. After the release of Newell's debut EP, Power on February 19th, he'll join Lambert's tour as a special guest from February 23rd to April 2nd.

Newell recently dropped the first track from Power , "This Ain't Over." The vibrant dance-pop track flawlessly revives disco if only for a few short minutes. Without the gimmicks of manufactured radio pop, Newell manages to serve "This Ain't Over" with pure talent. The Out100 honoree 's vivacious presence is nothing short of Whitney-esque.

The accompanying video complements the vibrant music with a vibrant pop of color. Singing through the pitch black, his sparkling red lips conjure nostalgia for a Rocky Horror prelude.

Zurich Classic Betting Preview: Odds, Prediction, Long Shot Bet, Team to Fade and Outright Winner Pick

In this story:

The only PGA Tour team event of the season (think laidback Ryder Cup vibes) is here and it’s chock-full of powerhouse tandems to consider betting on. 

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry, Xander Schauffle and Patrick Cantlay, Will Zalatoris and Sahith Theegala headline the field this week, but we're not betting on them, choosing instead to focus on a team of brothers.

Before betting, it’s important to remember this is a unique format. There are two days of fourball, known as best-ball, played in Rounds 1 and 3 and two rounds of foursomes, known as alternate shots, in Rounds 2 and 4.

Last year’s winning team of Davis Riley and Nick Hardy shot 30 under for the week, so we must pick duos who can go low in each format.

Who are they? Let’s break it down starting with the Top 10 teams in odds, which come from DraftKings Sportsbook, followed by our longshot pick, the team to fade and outright winner.

Zurich Classic Long Shot Pick: ​​Billy Horschel / Tyson Alexander +4000

There’s no shortage of star power atop the leaderboard, but a team capable of competing this week that’s flying under the radar is Billy Horschel and Tyson Alexander at +4000 odds. 

Horschel just won the Puntacana Championship with a 23-under total highlighted by a 63 on Sunday. He’s always been a streaky player and I’m counting on his hot streak continuing at an event he’s had success at before. 

Horschel won this event when it was played as an individual tournament and won it another time as a team. He’s placed second twice and tied for fourth once here. Last year, he placed 11th with Sam Burns. 

Alexander is not as well known and doesn’t have as strong of a history at the Zurich, but he’s off to a good start this season (has made three straight cuts) and had his best start of the season three weeks ago at the Texas Open. He's also 49th on tour in shots-gained: putting, an important stat this week, especially in alternate shot.

Winning back-to-back events is tough, but Horschel’s hot and he wouldn’t have picked Alexander as his teammate in an event he has a history of success at if he didn’t think they could win. 

Zurich Classic Team to Fade: Rasmus Højgaard / Nicolai Højgaard +2200

Nicolai Højgaard was leading the Masters outright Saturday afternoon before a disastrous back nine 40 ended his chances of winning. He followed that up with a 4-over 76 on Sunday and just missed the cut at the Puntacana Championship.

Overall, he’s missed three cuts in his last five events and was T-75 in another with a +5 total score. His run at Augusta seems more an apparition when taking a macro view of his recent form.

Nicolai is playing with his twin brother, ​​Rasmus, who withdrew from the Indian Open after an opening-round 79. ​​Rasmus does have three Top 10s on the DP World Tour this season, but the most recent one came in February. 

Recent results suggest both brother’s forms are regressing heading into this one. While being together could lighten the mood and improve their play, the +2200 odds are not good enough to warrant a bet. 

Zurich Classic Pick to Win: Matt Fitzpatrick / Alex Fitzpatrick +2500

After fading one brother duo, why not back another, huh? 

Matt Fitzpatrick is ranked ninth in total driving on the PGA Tour, 26th in total putting, 15th in birdie average per round and 11th in birdie percentage on Par 5s. He finished fifth at the Players and 10th at the Texas Open, was in contention at the Masters early and just shot four rounds under par at the RBC Heritage. 

Alex finished T23 at the Corales last week with four rounds under par including a Sunday 67. He missed the cut at the Indian Open at the end of March, but has been steady on the DP World Tour this season, with six Top 20s in nine events. Like his brother, Alex is a solid driver and strong putter.

Zurich Classic of New Orleans 2024 picks and best bets for PGA Tour golf this week

The PGA Tour's team event is here, but who will shine at the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans?

We're heading down to New Orleans, TPC Louisiana in Avondale to be more specific, this week for the only team event on the PGA Tour , the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans. There are some big names in this field with the favorites, Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele along with Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry, headlining this field.

This is one of the tougher golf tournaments to handicap as you not only have to look at the statistics for each individual player, but also considering how teammates mesh, how they've performed in previous team settings, and there's also just a bit of luck involved with this format, frankly. When you have two rounds of best ball and two rounds of alternate shot, things can get crazy.

It's been a rough couple of weeks as we were down 3.7 units at The Masters and then 0.5 units last week when we had to just go with our picks on X/Twitter . But we're back here and really trying to crack the formula to climb out of this brutal cold streak. Let's get into our Zurich Classic picks for the week and do just that.

PGA Tour expert picks for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans: Winner, Top 10 and One and Done

Top 10 pick for the zurich classic of new orleans: tom hoge/maverick mcnealy (+210).

This is exactly what I'm looking for with a pairing that should have a lot of success. Over the last 20 rounds, Tom Hoge is the fourth-best player in this field on approach (1.033 strokes gained) and has been reeling off Top 20 finishes as a result of that and a solid putter. Meanwhile, Maverick McNealy's short game has been stellar all year, but he's gaining slightly on approach and is 15th in strokes gained tee-to-green (1.066) over the last 12 rounds. He's coming into form and this pairing should absolutely gel perfectly to compete, especially after seeing Hoge finished T13 here with Harris English last year.

Outright Winner pick for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans (0.5 Units): Doug Ghim/Chan Kim (+5000)

One thing about the Zurich Classic is that we often see teams just get hot and pop. So I'm going with that strategy for my winner pick with the team of Doug Ghim and Chan Kim. This is team no-putt, to be quite sure, as they've combined to lose about 1.25 strokes on the greens over the last 12 rounds. But Kim actually leads this field in strokes gained tee-to-green over that span (1.437). Ghim, meanwhile, struggled at Valspar and Houston on approach, but got back to his DNA to gain over 2.0 strokes on approach at the Valero. I think he finds his ball striking and am just hoping this ball-striking tandem gets a hot putter collectively to contend.

One and Done Pick for Zurich Classic of New Orleans: Tom Hoge/Maverick McNealy

We've already covered this one and I absolutely love the pairing. There is winning upside for this pairing but I think the way their form is right now combined with the match of their games has me believing that the floor is also extremely high, which is a great spot to be in for a regular-field One and Done pick.

Zurich Classic picks: More best bets for PGA Tour this week

Davis thompson/andrew novak to finish top 10 (+333).

This is another team that just seems to blend extremely well. Andrew Novak has been a stalwart on approach, ranking 11th in this field in strokes gained (0.745) over the last 12 rounds. His around-the-green play, however, has seen him losing significant strokes (0.288) over that span. Davis Thompson, on the other hand, has been a Top 30 driver in this field while Novak has been outside the Top 50 but has struggled on approach. Yet, he's gaining 0.769 strokes around the green and more than a half stroke putting over the last 12 rounds. A bit of a flier, but this blend of what these players are doing well provides great upside.

Matt Fitzpatrick/Alex Fitzpatrick to finish Top 5 (+450)

People, myself included, were a bit too intrigued about the Fitzpatrick Brothers pairing last year when Alex simply didn't have any status and wasn't all that fresh. But Matt has been coming into form since figuring out a weighted driver issue with three straight Top 30 finishes. Meanwhile, Alex has been playing a lot on the DP World Tour with four Top 20 finishes in his seven starts in 2024 while also finishing T23 at Corales this week. With a comfy family pairing and the steady form of both Fitzpatricks of late, I like the upside for this team to contend.

Dylan Wu/Justin Lower to finish Top 20 (+210)

We're taking a little bit of a flier here, but Dylan Wu and Justin Lower both come in on three straight made cuts. Meanwhile, Lower has three straight Top 28 finishes, including a T28 at Corales last week. Wu's finishes haven't been as strong, but his approach play is Top 20 in the field over the last 12 rounds (0.658 strokes gained). Lower has also gained more than a half stroke on approach over that span, but his short game has been dialed, something Wu has been basically dead even with. I'm always going to fall back on approach play which these guys are showing, though, and if Wu's short game can cooperate, they could indeed pop.

Longshot Pick to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans (0.1 Units): Mac Meissner/Austin Smotherman (+10000)

Way down the board, we're taking a small swing with the Meissner/Smotherman team. Meissner has two missed cuts in his last four starts, but the other two are a T10 and T26 showing. He's also gaining strokes in every category over that span. Smotherman, meanwhile, finished T50 at Corales but finished T9 on the Korn Ferry Tour two weeks prior. The KFT requires elite scoring to compete, and Smotherman has been in that world. I think he can reel off birdies in best ball and this pairing should be solid based on skill sets. That's worth a sprinkle at 100/1.
