Filson is actually one of my favorite brands, and their luggage is just as quality as the other products they make. They started their journey 125 years ago as an outfitter for people participating in the 1897 Yukon Gold Rush. Making dependable, high-quality products fit to withstand severe conditions is in the company’s DNA. Not surprisingly, this Seatle-based brand is now a huge hit with adventure enthusiasts, including outdoorsmen, engineers, and explorers, for offering highly reliable, American-made outdoor clothing and gear.

What We Like and Don’t Like About Filson Dryden Wheeled Carry-On Suitcases

Filson’s world-class quality is a product of American craftsmanship that the brand has supported for over a century, and Dryden carry-on bag is a fine example of that. This rugged bag has been built to rough it out in the harshest weather conditions. It is made from a thick 1000-denier CORDURA ballistic nylon fabric known for its high resistance to abrasions and water.

Dryden carry-on bag with its two wheels and a convenient nylon handle is a breeze to roll around, and the molded feet make sure it doesn’t topple over. Inside, you’ll find two dividers complete with zippers and nylon lining to hold your belongings in place. You also get two pockets to stash smaller items or toiletries. Dryden carry-on is what I call a perfect blend of great looks, practicality, and affordability. It has all the essential ingredients of an ideal hiking, camping, and outdoor luggage bag, including two compression straps to hold your belongings securely. Finally, this bag comes in three equally stunning layouts- Whiskey, Dark Navy, and Otter Green for you to pick from.

Overall, I personally love the Filson brand, so I’m a little biased towards them. I’ve owned and tested a lot of their products and found them to be extremely high quality. Instead of opting for a manufacturer overseas, Boomershine partnered with Hentz Manufacturing, an American handbag sewing company, to make sure the jobs stayed in the US. Today, Cinda B is a rapidly growing brand with over 1000 retail tie-ups across the country.

What We Like and Don’t Like About Cinda b Luggage Bags

Cinda B.’s catalog is full of some of the best-looking bags I’ve ever laid my eyes on! From its luggage bags, totes, pouches, and purses, every piece is high on style and versatility without compromising utility. The vacationer is an incredibly lightweight, large-sized duffel bag from stain and water-resistant quilted fabric.

It boasts the brand’s signature big mouth, zip closure, and snap-down ends for a quick packing and unpacking experience. Besides the generous space inside, you also get three slip pockets inside and two outside to pack in smaller items.

They off so many great bags with beautiful layouts that you’ll have a hard time picking only one. My personal favorite is Verde Bonita, but there’s also Radical Rose, Royal Bonita, Calypso, and Camo to choose from.

These bags are perfect for people who find it hard to pack light! We want to squish our entire wardrobe if the space allows! Cinda B.’s light-as-a-feather bag is roomy enough to pack clothes and essentials fit for a two-week-long vacation for an individual or a weekend trip for a family.

InUSA produces a line of durable and functional hard case suitcases and offers them at prices that won’t hurt your wallet too bad. Each product has been designed keeping in mind modern tastes and features valued by savvy travelers.

One thing to note about this company is that they assemble some of their bags in the USA, but not all of them. However, the company is actively working towards creating more manufacturing jobs here. This is why they started a “Made in USA” initiative to cater to customers looking for authentic American-made products. I personally would like to see the company source more of its materials from the USA, but in the luggage industry, that’s a difficult thing to ask for. I figured I’d show you their suitcases and let you make the decision on whether or not you want to support them.

What We Like and Don’t Like About InUSA Hardshell Luggage

They have many different styles that are assembled in the USA. Rather than discussing all of the different features here, I provided a link to their website directly that shows only their luggage that is made in the USA. One thing you’ll notice about the suitcases made in the USA compared to ones made overseas is that they are more expensive. This isn’t a surprise, and from what I’ve seen, their luggage that is assembled in America is of higher quality.

Whether on a business or leisure trip, this rough and tough bag will serve you well. The hardshell exterior with a four-wheel design makes it easy to maneuver at airports and train stations. InUSA’s bags come in a variety of colors, including bright orange, which happens to be my favorite.

If you want to avoid additional baggage fees, opt for a carry-on made from lightweight, durable materials, like ballistic nylon or high-density polyester. In general, lightweight carry-ons weigh less than 10 pounds, though the lightest models weigh as little as three pounds. You can choose between backpacks and hard shell exteriors for lightweight carry-on bags.

Hard Shell or Soft Shell:

High-tech fabrics make carry-ons more resistant to wear and tear than ever. In addition, hardshell luggage has become lighter and more resistant to cracking thanks to materials like polycarbonate. For last-minute items and electronics, hardshell designs even feature easy-zip front pockets. Carry-ons made of hard shells, however, have less flexibility when stowed in an aircraft. This factor is a matter of preference and depends on what’s in your bag too.

Maneuverability:

Keeping your bag from tipping over while making turns and navigating through crowds is easy with 360-degree spinner wheels. When boarding or exiting an airplane, travelers can turn their spinner carry-on or suitcase sideways for easy access to narrow aisles.

The wheels of these rollers protrude further than traditional rollers, so if handled incorrectly, they will break. Retracted wheels are more durable in traditional roller bags.

Carry-ons have other maneuverability options besides wheels. There are luggage companies that also offer ergonomic handles with either one- or two-bar construction. Handles on carry-ons can also be rotated to reduce wrist and hand strain.

Zipper Quality:

Having a broken zipper is extremely inconvenient when you’re far from your destination. Choose metal or plastic zipper chains instead of coil zippers. Many bags are also equipped with self-repairing zippers, so travelers can move the zipper pull over a section where the teeth have separated to reseal.

If you are buying a waterproof carry-on in a hard shell or soft shell, make sure the zipper isn’t going to pose a potential leak problem.

Be sure to read the fine print on the warranty before investing in luggage. Most lifetime warranties only cover manufacturing defects. Determine whether additional damages are covered by the warranty. Some luggage companies will charge you an additional fee for a lifetime warranty, even if your luggage is damaged by baggage handlers. Some luggage companies will send you a temporary replacement while they repair certain lines.

I like the customizable luggage, and there were a few brands I had not heard of here. ROAM seems like a good choice but I can’t spend that kind of money at the moment.

I do agree it’s very cool. Honestly, for the price, I don’t think it’s unreasonable, but I can understand it’s not something for everyone.

So glad to find your website although I was looking for something else I’ve found many new items! Always looking for USA made products. American Manufacturers should really consider placing a conspicuous “USA MADE” label or sticker for shoppers to easily find products.

I first started traveling solo internationally long before my career as a professional travel writer began, back in college when protecting my belongings involved keeping a death grip on my airline tickets (remember cardstock tickets?) and cashier’s checks. I remember nervously walking around London — wearing my backpack in front, of course — and assuming everyone on the Tube was trying to figure out where I had stashed my cash. I learned from that trip that traveling in fear is no fun as a solo traveler (or as any sort of traveler, for that matter), and it’s definitely not necessary. What is necessary is being aware of your surroundings and making smart decisions, like not walking alone through dimly lit passageways and not letting others know you’re traveling alone.   More than eight dozen countries later — and hundreds of stories filed from hotel rooms and cafes around the world — and I can now attribute much of my safety success while on the road to being smart, being aware, and being prepared with gear that protects my personal info (like these data blocking charging cables ).  You’ll still often see me traveling with my backpack on my front while riding on crowded Metros around Europe where I live … only now that backpack is equipped with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)-blocking technology. Digital theft is a growing problem around the world, and not just in crowded cities, where a simple skim (i.e., scan) of your bag could give thieves access to your name, address, credit card numbers, and expiration dates. For that reason, I always use an RFID-blocking wallet or bag to keep my credit cards and IDs un-skimmable and recommend travelers do the same. From bags that are meant to be worn on the front to bags that are both slice- and skim-resistant, these are my favorite RFID-blocking bags for anyone looking to protect themselves while traveling.

This roomy messenger is lightweight but durable, and by durable I mean slash-proof, cut-proof, and equipped with locking hardware to strap it down while at a restaurant or café. Although this anti-theft bag is smaller than the average tote, it’s great for storing a 10-inch tablet and perfect for protecting your digital identity with a spacious RFID-blocking pocket built right in. Even better, you can wear it as a tote, a crossbody, or a shoulder bag.

Kroser Laptop Backpack 

There are no less than 13 pockets in this TSA-friendly backpack. Some are mesh, some are zippered, but the most important ones are RFID-blocking. Reviewers obviously love its functionality, but many also mention how comfy it is to wear.

The RFID-blocking pocket in this crossbody is almost as big as the entire bag itself. This also comes with an interior zipper coin pocket as well as an exterior zippered pocket, but I love that it can be worn as a wristlet or a crossbody depending on which strap you use.

Don’t let the size deceive you — this durable bag is surprisingly spacious. It comes with Travelon’s signature 5-point anti-theft security system (i.e., slash-resistant strap, lock down straps, locking compartments, an RFID-blocking organizer, slash-resistant mesh), and it can be worn as either a waist pack or a crossbody. 

Wrangler RFID-Blocking Crossbody Purse 

Simply thread your belt through the belt loop for a hands-free RFID-blocking bag that’s great for travel. Designed to resemble an old-school camera bag, this petite purse is perfect for stashing the essentials, and keeping those essentials safe no matter where you go. 

Travelon Anti-theft Classic Sling Bag

Vankean Expandable Waterproof Laptop Briefcase 

This bag had me at “expandable.” It’s small, but mighty, with anti-theft features that include multiple RFID pockets. Aside from being expandable, I like that it’s waterproof, TSA-compliant, and holds up to a 17-inch laptop.

JetBlue baggage fees and how to avoid paying them

Editor's note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information and offers.

Similar to many other airlines, JetBlue recently raised its checked bag fees , but that doesn't mean you can't still travel with checked luggage for cheap.

Luckily, with the JetBlue baggage policy, there are still many ways to avoid paying baggage fees on your next flight depending on your JetBlue elite status , the fare class you booked or which credit card you're carrying.

JetBlue's baggage fees are also very simple and clearly stated, making it easy to understand the additional cost you'll incur on your next flight; let's take a closer look.

JetBlue carry-on guidelines

All passengers flying with JetBlue can bring along one personal item that fits under the seat in front. The personal item might be a backpack, purse, laptop bag or approved pet carrier (if you pay the pet fee ). It cannot be larger than 17 inches by 13 inches by 8 inches.

On top of the personal item, JetBlue passengers who booked a Blue, Blue Plus, Blue Extra or Mint fare are also allowed a carry-on bag that can fit into the overhead bin. There is no fee for this second bag, although the size can't exceed 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches. Note that these dimensions include wheels and handles.

Passengers who booked the lowest fare ticket — Blue Basic — are not allowed to bring a larger carry-on bag to store in the overhead bin. Blue Basic passengers who bring extra bags or a bag that is too large to fit beneath the seat in front will face JetBlue checked bag fees. JetBlue baggage policy currently lists this fee as $65 for the first or second checked bag and $180 for the third.

There are some exceptions to this policy. You can still bring a carry-on bag to place within the overhead bin when traveling on a Blue Basic fare if you fall into one of the following categories:

• Mosaic members (who get a carry-on bag and early boarding with all fares)
• If you're flying on a transatlantic flight (including connecting flights)
• Travelers combining a Blue Basic fare with an Even More Space seat (on all legs, if connecting)*
• Active U.S. military members
• Unaccompanied minors

*Note: If you're flying on a transatlantic flight, booking an Even More Space seat does not grant you any additional baggage other than those already included.

JetBlue checked bag fees

All JetBlue passengers are allowed to check bags. Your fare type, JetBlue elite status and whether you have a JetBlue credit card will determine the checked bag fee you must pay.

JetBlue has two different checked bag fee charts — one for routes within the U.S., Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada, and one for transatlantic flights.

The chart below will allow you to determine your JetBlue checked bag fee for your first and second checked bag at the airport.

JetBlue baggage fees for flights within the US, Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada

*For flights purchased before Jan. 11, 2024, the first checked baggage fee will cost $30 to $35. For flights purchased between Jan. 11 and Jan. 31, 2024, the first checked baggage fee will cost $35 to $40. For flights purchased before July 25, 2023, second checked baggage fees cost $45.

Unless you book a Blue Plus fare or a Mint seat, are a Mosaic loyalty member, have the JetBlue Plus Card or have the JetBlue Business Card , you will pay $35 to $45 for the first checked bag and $50 to $60 for the second checked bag.

However, paying your checked baggage fees more than 24 hours before departure can secure the least expensive pricing ($35 for your first bag and $50 for your second bag). Remember that travelers with Blue Plus fares, JetBlue Plus cardmembers and JetBlue Business cardmembers only have one bag included, so you'll still have to pay for the second checked bag.

The information for the JetBlue Plus Card and JetBlue Business Card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Per the JetBlue baggage policy, Mint passengers can check a bag up to 70 pounds. With the JetBlue baggage weight restrictions, all other passenger bags must be 50 pounds or less to avoid additional overweight charges. In my experience, Mosaic members can also check a bag up to 70 pounds, but this isn't formally included in the JetBlue baggage policy online.

If you want to travel with more than two checked bags, you'll need to pay $125 per bag for your third bag and $150 for each subsequent bag, regardless of your fare type or elite status. Note that on reservations made before July 25, 2023, the third checked bag fee is $150.

You may want to check the JetBlue baggage policy for yourself before your trip, though. After all, some destinations have limitations on luggage — specifically international destinations.

JetBlue baggage fees for transatlantic flights

Although the fee to check a bag is significantly more expensive when traveling to Europe, most fare types include your first checked bag.

However, if you want to travel with more than two checked bags, you'll need to pay $200, 150 pounds or 185 euros per bag for your third bag and each subsequent bag regardless of your fare type or elite status.

Bags that don't incur JetBlue baggage fees

Some items won't count toward your carry-on or checked baggage limit, regardless of your destination. For example, if you are traveling with an assistive device — such as a stroller, car seat, crutches or wheelchair — you can bring it with you for free (although it is still subject to carry-on size and weight restrictions).

Additionally, with the JetBlue baggage policy, all U.S. military members on active military orders and dependents can check up to five bags at no additional cost (and up to 99 pounds each). Those traveling for leisure along with their dependents can check up to two bags at no additional cost.

Overweight and oversize baggage fees

JetBlue charges both an overweight and oversize fee, which can add up quickly if you exceed limits.

These additional fees are charged as follows:

• Overweight fee (up to 99 pounds): $150 per bag; $150/120 pounds/140 euros per bag for transatlantic flights (bags that exceed 70 pounds not accepted on transatlantic flights)
• Oversize fee (up to 80 inches, including wheels and handles): $150 per bag; $150/120 pounds/140 euros on transatlantic flights

Sporting equipment fee

JetBlue allows you to check sporting equipment , but some items carry an excess fee.

Golf bags, fishing rods, skimboards, skis and snowboard bags all count as standard checked bags. The fee for these items will follow the same criteria as your first or second checked bag. As long as these particular items are within the weight limits, they will not incur an oversized bag fee.

How to avoid JetBlue checked bag fees

Fortunately, there are many ways to avoid JetBlue baggage fees.

Elite status allowances

All Mosaic loyalty members can check up to two bags at no cost. You can earn JetBlue Mosaic status by earning 50 Tiles.

Tiles can be earned in the following ways:

• Earn one Tile for every $100 spent on qualifying JetBlue purchases (including paid JetBlue flights, JetBlue Vacations packages and Paisly reservations).
• Earn one Tile for every $1,000 in qualifying spend on a JetBlue credit card.

Additionally, all eligible travel companions booked on the same reservation with a JetBlue Mosaic elite member can check up to two bags for no fee. For example, as long as one passenger in a family of four has Mosaic status, the group can check up to eight bags for no additional fee.

Avoid checked baggage fees by holding the right credit cards

JetBlue offers three credit cards — two personal cards and one business card. However, only two cards offer a checked bag benefit. In particular, with the JetBlue Plus Card and JetBlue Business Card , you can check your first bag for free as long as you purchase the ticket with your card. This perk extends to three additional companions on the same reservation as the cardholder.

Both cards come with a $99 annual fee. So, even if you only check a bag on three flights each year, you'll break even.

Book a premium cabin

When you book your ticket, there are many fare-class options — each one includes different benefits for your flight. If you aren't a Mosaic member and you don't have an eligible JetBlue credit card, then you might want to consider selecting the Blue Plus fare option. Doing so will allow you to check your first bag for free. However, this fare type is not an option on many routes, so don't be surprised if you don't see it listed.

JetBlue Mint seats also allow you to check up to two bags at no additional fee. And for flights within the U.S., Latin America and the Caribbean, you can check a bag up to 70 pounds without facing any overweight charges.

Use card travel credits to cover fees

If you have to pay baggage fees on your next JetBlue flight, know that many travel rewards cards offer annual statement credits . You can use these credits toward various travel purchases, including baggage fees.

For example, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® offers a $300 annual travel credit on anything that codes as "travel" on your credit card statement. You'll also find that many American Express cards , such as The Platinum Card® from American Express , offer annual airline fee credits . However, note that you'll need to enroll before using some of these benefits.

Bottom line

Although JetBlue charges a checked baggage fee for most customers, there are many ways to avoid this additional cost. For starters, if you can pack a smaller suitcase, you can bring your bag as a carry-on and store it in the airline's overhead bin (as long as you don't book a Blue Basic fare).

If you must check your luggage, your first bag will travel with you for free as long as you have a JetBlue credit card. While you might not want to have another credit card in your wallet, if you find yourself flying JetBlue often, an eligible JetBlue credit card is an easy way to avoid the JetBlue baggage fee.

Automatic Refunds and No More Hidden Fees: D.O.T. Sets New Rules for Airlines

The Transportation Department issued new requirements on refunds when flights are canceled or delayed and on revealing “junk” fees before booking. Here’s what passengers can expect.

The Transportation Department on Wednesday announced new rules taking aim at two of the most difficult and annoying issues in air travel: obtaining refunds and encountering surprise fees late in the booking process.

“Passengers deserve to know upfront what costs they are facing and should get their money back when an airline owes them — without having to ask,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a statement, adding that the changes would not only save passengers “time and money,” but also prevent headaches.

The department’s new rules, Mr. Buttigieg said, will hold airlines to clear and consistent standards when they cancel, delay or substantially change flights, and require automatic refunds to be issued within weeks. They will also require them to reveal all fees before a ticket is purchased.

Airlines for America , a trade group representing the country’s largest air carriers, said in a statement that its airlines “abide by and frequently exceed” D.O.T. consumer protection regulations.

Passenger advocates welcomed the new steps.

Tomasz Pawliszyn, the chief executive of AirHelp, a Berlin-based company that assists passengers with airline claims, called it a “massive step forward and huge improvement in consumer rights and protection” that brings the United States closer to global standards in passenger rights.

Here’s what we know about the D.O.T.’s new rules, which will begin to go into effect in October.

There’s now one definition for a “significant” delay.

Until now, airlines have been allowed to set their own definition for a “significant” delay and compensation has varied by carrier . Now, according to the D.O.T., there will be one standard: when departure or arrival is delayed by three hours for domestic flights and six hours for international flights.

Passengers will get prompt refunds for cancellations or significant changes for flights and delayed bags, for any reason.

When things go wrong, getting compensation from an airline has often required establishing a cumbersome paper trail or spending untold hours on the phone. Under the new rules, refunds will be automatic, without passengers having to request them. Refunds will be made in full, excepting the value of any transportation already used. Airlines and ticket agents must provide refunds in the original form of payment, whether by cash, credit card or airline miles. Refunds are due within seven days for credit card purchases and within 20 days for other payments.

Passengers with other flight disruptions, such as being downgraded to a lower service class, are also entitled to refunds.

The list of significant changes for which passengers can get their money back also includes: departure or arrival from an airport different from the one booked; connections at different airports or flights on planes that are less accessible to a person with a disability; an increase in the number of scheduled connections. Also, passengers who pay for services like Wi-Fi or seat selection that are then unavailable will be refunded any fees.

Airlines must give travel vouchers or credits to ticketed passengers unable to fly because of government restrictions or a doctor’s orders.

The vouchers or credits will be transferable and can be used for at least five years after the date they were issued.

Fees for checked baggage and modifying a reservation must be disclosed upfront.

Airlines and ticket agents are now required to display any extra fees for things like checking bags or seat selection clearly and individually before a ticket purchase. They will also need to outline the airline’s policies on baggage, cancellations and changing flights before a customer purchases a ticket.

The rules, which apply to all flights on domestic airlines and flights to and from the United States operated by foreign airlines, have varying start dates.

For example, automatic refunds must be instituted by the airlines within six months. But carriers have a year before they’re required to issue travel vouchers and credits for passengers advised by a medical professional not to fly.

Airlines are ordered to give full refunds instead of vouchers and to stop hiding fees

WASHINGTON — In an effort to crack down on airlines that charge passengers steep fees to check bags and change flights, the U.S. Department of Transportation has announced new regulations aimed at expanding consumer protections .

One of the final rules announced Wednesday requires airlines to show the full price of travel before passengers pay for their tickets. The other will force airlines to provide prompt cash refunds when flights are canceled or significantly changed.

"Passengers deserve to know upfront what costs they are facing and should get their money back when an airline owes them - without having to ask," said Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a statement announcing the new rules.

Taking on junk fees is popular. But can it win Biden more voters?

Surprise junk fees have become a large and growing source of revenue for airlines in recent years, according to the DOT.

"Today's announcements will require airlines to both provide passengers better information about costs before ticket purchase, and promptly provide cash refunds to passengers when they are owed — not only saving passengers time and money, but also preventing headaches," Buttigieg said.

The airline industry is unlikely to welcome the new rules. At a hearing on the proposed fee rule in March 2023, an industry lobbying group representing American, Delta and United said it would be too difficult for airlines to disclose their charges more clearly.

"The amount of unwanted and unneeded information forced upon passengers" by the new policy would only cause "confusion and frustration," warned Doug Mullen, the deputy general counsel at Airlines for America . "Very few, if any, need or want this information, and especially when they are initially trying to understand schedule and fare options."

But the DOT insists its new rule will give consumers the information they need to better understand the true costs of air travel.

"I believe this is to the benefit of the sector as a whole," Buttigieg said in an interview with NPR's Morning Edition , because passengers will have "more confidence in the aviation sector."

The new rules require airlines to disclose all baggage, change, and cancellation fees, and to share that information with third-party booking sites and travel agents.

The regulation also prohibits bait-and-switch tactics, the DOT says, that disguise the true cost of flights by advertising a low base fare that does not include all mandatory fees.

"This is really about making sure that we create a better experience for passengers, and a stronger aviation sector in the United States," Buttigieg said in the NPR interview.

Airlines required to refund passengers for canceled, delayed flights

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced the new rules Wednesday.

Good news for airline travelers: the Department of Transportation on Wednesday announced it is rolling out new rules that will require airlines to automatically give cash refunds to passengers for canceled and significantly delayed flights.

"This is a big day for America's flying public," said Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg at a Wednesday morning news conference. Buttigieg said the new rules -- which require prompt refunds -- are the biggest expansion of passenger rights in the department's history.

Airlines can no longer decide how long a delay must be before a refund is issued. Under the new DOT rules, the delays covered would be more than three hours for domestic flights and more than six hours for international flights, the agency said.

This includes tickets purchased directly from airlines, travel agents and third-party sites such as Expedia and Travelocity.

The DOT rules lay out that passengers will be "entitled to a refund if their flight is canceled or significantly changed, and they do not accept alternative transportation or travel credits offered."

DOT will also require airlines to give cash refunds if your bags are lost and not delivered within 12 hours.

The refunds must be issued within seven days, according to the new DOT rules, and must be in cash unless the passenger chooses another form of compensation. Airlines can no longer issue refunds in forms of vouchers or credits when consumers are entitled to receive cash.

Airlines will have six months to comply with the new rules.

"Passengers deserve to get their money back when an airline owes them -- without headaches or haggling," Buttigieg said in a statement.

The DOT said it is also working on rules related to family seating fees, enhancing rights for wheelchair-traveling passengers for safe and dignified travel and mandating compensation and amenities if flights are delayed or canceled by airlines.

Buttigieg said the DOT is also protecting airline passengers from being surprised by hidden fees -- a move he estimates will have Americans billions of dollars every year.

The DOT rules include that passengers will receive refunds for extra services paid for and not provided, such as Wi-Fi, seat selection or inflight entertainment.

The rules come after the agency handed Southwest Airlines a record $140 million fine for its operational meltdown during the 2022 holiday travel season.

Buttigieg said Southwest's fine sets a "new standard" for airlines and passenger rights.

"To be clear, we want the airline sector to thrive. It is why we put so much into helping them survive the pandemic and honestly it's why we're being so rigorous on passenger protection," he said.

Buttigieg reiterated that refund requirements are already the standard for airlines, but the new DOT rules hold the airlines to account and makes sure passengers get the "refunds that are owed to them."

"Airlines are not enthusiastic about us holding them to a higher standard," Buttigieg said, adding that he "knows they will be able to adapt to this."

Airlines for America, the trade association for the country's leading passenger and cargo airlines, told ABC News in a statement that its members "offer a range of options -- including fully refundable fares." Is said consumers are "given the choice of refundable ticket options with terms and conditions that best fit their needs at first search results."

The group said the 11 largest U.S. airlines issued $43 billion in customer refunds from 2020 through 2023 nearly $11 billion in refunds just last year.

An Oklahoma man faces up to 12 years in prison on a Caribbean island after customs officials found ammunition in his luggage.

Ryan Watson traveled to Turks and Caicos with his wife, Valerie, to celebrate his 40th birthday on April 7. They went with two friends who had also turned 40.

The vacation came to an abrupt end when airport staff members found a zip-close bag containing bullets in the couple's carry-on luggage. Watson said it was hunting ammunition he had accidentally brought with him — but under a strict law in Turks and Caicos, a court may still impose a mandatory 12-year sentence.

"They were hunting ammunition rounds that I use for whitetail deer," Watson told NBC Boston in an interview conducted last week that aired after their first court appearance Tuesday.

"I recognized them, and I thought, 'Oh, man, what a bonehead mistake that I had no idea that those were in there,'" he said.

The couple were arrested and charged with possession of ammunition. Authorities seized their passports and explained the penalties they faced.

Valerie Watson said in the interview: "When I heard that, I immediately was terrified, because I was like we can't both be in prison for 12 years. We have kids at home, and this is such an innocent mistake."

The charges against her were dropped, and she returned home to Oklahoma City on Tuesday after the court hearing to be reunited with her two young children.

"Our goal is to get Ryan home, because we can’t be a family without Dad," she said.

The couple also spoke about the financial burden of a much longer-than-planned trip. "This is something that we may never recover from," Ryan Watson said.

The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a warning to travelers in September about a law that strongly prohibits possession of firearms or ammunition in Turks and Caicos, an overseas British territory southeast of the Bahamas that is a popular vacation spot.

It said: "We wish to remind all travelers that declaring a weapon in your luggage with an airline carrier does not grant permission to bring the weapon into TCI [Turks and Caicos Islands] and will result in your arrest."

The embassy added: "If you bring a firearm or ammunition into TCI, we will not be able to secure your release from custody."

The embassy and the government in Turks and Caicos did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The same thing happened to another American, Bryan Hagerich, of Pennsylvania, who was arrested after ammunition was found in his luggage before he tried to board a flight out of Turks and Caicos in February. He said he accidentally left it in his bag.

Hagerich was on a family vacation with his wife and two young children but has now been in the country for 70 days. He spent eight days in prison before he posted bail.

"It’s incredibly scary. You know, you just don’t know what the next day may bring — you know, what path this may take," Hagerich told NBC Boston.

"You know, it’s certainly a lot different than packing your bags and going away with your family for a few days. It’s been the worst 70 days of my life," he said.

Hagerich, once a professional baseball player, was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the MLB 2007 June amateur draft from the University of Delaware.

His case goes to trial May 3.
