AR Rahman’s 2023 Europe Tour – Germany, France & Switzerland announced
- 28th July 2023
- POST IN : KOLLYWOOD
This autumn, AR Rahman is performing live across Europe, marking his first-ever Europe tour.
So far, the confirmed countries for the 2023 concert tour include Germany presented by Tamil.de & A.J.Entertainment, France by Shruthilayah and Switzerland by Thaalam Media.
London is potentially on the cards for late September, but this has yet to be confirmed officially. It’s rumored that Hamsini entertainment & Hue Box, the organisers behind AR Rahman’s 2017 concert at Wembley arena, which celebrated 25 years since his acclaimed debut Roja, will present AR’s return to a UK arena – most likely The O2 in Greenwich, London.
So, the question remains – What songs will he perform? Specifically how many Tamil, and Hindi songs?
Over the decades, AR Rahman’s UK concerts have always been a multi-language music experience. Despite Rahman being Tamil himself and having composed much of his music in Tamil, his set list for his UK concerts would include more Hindi than Tamil songs.
However, in 2017 the set list was changed for his Wembley arena concert titled ‘Netru, Indru, Naalai.’ A few more Tamil songs were included, but it never out numbered the Hindi songs.
Sadly, this was not received well by a portion of his Hindi fans who attended the concert. The disgruntled fans complained about the number Tamil songs, taking out their frustration during the performances. Some walked out of the concert, and took to social media to demand refunds. The news made international headlines, and went viral across social media – thankfully in support of AR Rahman.
A few months later, Arya Canada who presented his Toronto tour, held one show for his Tamil hits and another for Hindi. Both shows did extremely well, proving that there was a solution to keep everyone happy.
We eagerly await for more information on the upcoming Europe tour. Stay logged onto thamarai.com for the latest entertainment news.

AR Rahman's concert tour choreographers reveal how they prepare for Oscar-winner's events
Updated August 20th, 2023 at 21:59 IST
The Mumbai-based duo, who have been collaborating with Rahman for over a decade now, said their aim is to see the viewers smile after every concert.

The joy and energy of a live concert is an "unmatched" experience, say choreographer duo Arun Mode and Chetan Kadam, who have extensively contributed in creating music maestro AR Rahman's various stage performances.
"As dancers, choreographers, we always want to see a smile on the audience's face... Live concerts give us that opportunity. When you are doing a film, it is always the camera for which you are performing, you are not interacting with an individual. The joy that comes from live concerts is unmatched," Mode told PTI in an interview here.
"We have movies and theatres. But the kick that you get from theatre, you don't get from films. You get instant gratification from the audience," added Kadam.
In the world of live shows, the spotlight is always on the performer, and Mode and Kadam said they are happy to be in the background.
"We have never done work to be recognised as Arun and Chetan. When we do a good shoot, we feel that our work has been recognised. If we were not good enough, we would not be working with the biggest legend in this country for 10 years," Mode said referring to Rahman.
The duo is currently hard at work as Rahman embarks on his concert tour 'Marakkuma Nenjam' (loosely translated from Tamil to mean 'Will my heart be able to forget this?'), which will celebrate his 30th anniversary as a music composer.
The first show will be held in Coimbatore on Sunday and will move to other Indian cities, including Chennai (September 10). The tour will also travel to France, Germany and Switzerland for the first time.
"It is an adrenaline rush. We are lucky to be part of sir's concert. The number of audience (members) is often 50,000 or 70,000 or more. They all scream, cheer and we can feel the energy and we put in more energy," Mode said.
Unlike movies, choreography in live-shows isn't restricted to the performances of background dancers.
According to Mode, their job requires them to conceptualise the dance acts, choose specialised dancers, as well as zero in on costumes and accessories, among other aspects.
"When a concert comes up, there's a major influence of where we are performing, like the geographical location. With Rahman sir's body of work, it is difficult to fit it into a two-hour concert.
"For instance, we have to choose all his best songs. We will have to do four concerts and still few songs will be left out. The process is always like, he tries to understand the pulse of the fans, he likes to cater to his fans," he said.
Rahman's stage performances reflect his diverse discography, added Kadam.
"If the concert is in Mumbai, then it will be in Hindi. He will do all kinds of songs, he will do a song in Hindi, Malayalam, or Tamil, etc. Like, 'Jai Ho' (from 'Slumdog Millionaire ') is a global phenomenon, so it depends on which part of the globe he is performing in and what the fans want to listen to more often.
"Also, like the 'Jiya Jale' track, it is something that everybody knows about, but he will mix it beautifully. The song is big and he takes it to another language. Then, it is a big challenge for us to match that level at every single concert."
After Rahman and the show's director select songs for a concert, it is up to the duo to further narrow down the list for the final gig.
"Every song that has choreography needs to have some meaning: Why are we doing it? From 60 songs that are shortlisted, we think 'x' songs will look more beautiful with the choreography.
"Like, 'Chaiyya Chaiyya' is a dance number. Everyone expects that dancers will be there, but Rahman sir will never do anything that is obvious. He is like, 'Let's not do dancing over here, the audience will dance anyway'. We will get into another song where they don't expect dancing, so he will choose a slow number," Mode explained.
Rahman, the multiple award-winning music composer known for his work in movies such as the "Ponniyin Selvan" series, "Enthiran", "Sivaji: The Boss", "Rangeela", "Bombay", "Taal", "Rockstar" and "Slumdog Millionaire", has had a deep influence on Mode and Kadam.
Back in 2007, the duo won the dance TV reality show "Nach Baliye 3" as choreographers to then actor couple Aamir Ali and Sanjeeda Shaikh, and they said most of the tracks they used on the show were composed by Rahman.
"When we got the opportunity to do 'Nach Baliye' as choreographers, his music was of the greatest help for us. I think all the dots were getting connected. The director, who used to work with AR Rahman, liked our choreography on his tunes. That's how it all got connected," Kadam said.
Mode and Kadam first collaborated with Rahman for the closing ceremony of Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2010, and it remains one of the most cherished moments of their career.
"There were 250 dancers, it was a ground event. It was a big thing. We barely had eight to ten days, the output was brilliant. It was the biggest challenge.
"We call it a miracle show, it was miraculous that we got the opportunity to work with him. It was done on a big scale because the IPL was big, besides working with so many dancers," Mode said.
For 'Marakkuma Nenjam', this time a total of 40 background dancers from various parts of India have been selected after auditioning to perform on 35 songs.
Kolkata-born Asina Mondal, who has been associated with Mode and Kadam since their first Rahman concert, said she is looking forward to the tour.
"It all feels like a family. When I came here, I didn't know anything much. I was just a good dancer. But I have learnt a lot of things over the years. Today, whenever I go on stage, I am both nervous and excited," Mondal said.
Mumbai's Harish Gajare said he has been working as a background dancer for more than a decade and feels the same excitement before any event.
"For AR Rahman's concert, I've the same excitement as everyone else," Gajare said.
"When you are on stage and you look at thousands of people cheering up, it is a feeling that you cannot express in words. You have to be there to experience it," added Chandni Nathani, who hails from Uttarakhand.

AR Rahman – Secret of Success Concert: An Entralling Performance By The Greatest Indian Showman, Wowed Over 71K Malaysians
Exclusively brought to you by dmy creation.
DMY Creation manage to pull off a magnificent AR Rahman Musical this year.
The name, Isai Puyal AR Rahman drew a massive crowd with more than 71k people to National Stadium, Bukit Jalil last weekend – 28th January 2023. “AR Rahman – Secret of Success – Live in Kuala Lumpur 2023” can now be deemed the biggest Indian concert that has been held this year.
Where do I even start?
There were a lot of happenings in the almost 4-hour-long concert and even before the concert took place.
Every concert-goers who attended this mass gig came donning various eye-catching attire from Gauthami “Chikku Bukku” inspired outfit look to stylish-chic looks.
Around 3pm, the crowd gradually gets bigger and the queue gets lengthier. In just a few hours, everyone felt like they were in the midst of a mini Thaipusam festival. While waiting, the Weather God tested the loyalty of all Rahmaniac by showering a light rain (I guess Lord Indra was in excitement too) . But these devoted fans are irresistible; some came prepared with umbrellas and raincoats, and some even purchased raincoats from the sellers.
Even amid the downpours, scorching heat, and enormous crowds, fans eagerly queue up for hours to see their favourite idol perform live. Nothing seems to have been able to stop the fans.
To boost and hype out the crowd, the organizers brought out the Malaysian Urumi Melam team to entertain the supporters waiting in the lengthy, snake-like queue. Besides, there were moving vendors selling food and drinks to keep spectators engaged both inside and outside the stadium.
Around 8.15 pm, the stadium was filled with thousands of people from all around the world. The host of the night, Maaran, had an interaction session with the concertgoers, and some revealed they had travelled all the way from the Netherlands and some from other foreign countries just to witness AR Rahman’s live music. The way the fans extended their love to Isai Puyal was just mind-blowing.
The Arrival of the Leader, Our Beloved Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim
Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, our honorable Prime Minister and Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, our Prime Minister’s lovely wife along with Dato Mohamed Yusoff , the founder and Chairman of DMY Creation stamped their grand entry at the National Stadium. The crowd welcomed them enthusiastically, cheering, clapping, and lauding to the leaders arrival. The concert was also attended by the Minister of Communications and Digital, Fahmi Fadzil.
At 8 pm sharp, the legendary Indian percussionist, Drums Sivamani came into the stage donning a black glitter-glimmery blazer, started the show with a variety of instrument performance. A great opening INDEED!
Isai Puyal AR Rahman Glorious Oscar Entry
A group of brilliant dancers started the show, riling up the heat among the crowd before the main show. The man of the night, AR Rahman sealed everyone’s attention with his Oscar winning song, Jai Ho as the starter, chaperoned by all the singers. Experiencing it live with his outstanding band members was truly mind-blowing. Hariharan, Shweta Mohan, Haricharan, Rakshita Suresh, Jonita Gandhi, Hriday Deepak Gattani , and many more, rendered their flawless performances during the show. In addition to this amazing evening, the legend’s heir, AR Armeen , was also spotted making his stage debut in Malaysia. He passionately covered songs like O Sayya, Secret of Success, and Mustafa.
AR Rahman sang, danced, grooved, vibed and enjoyed the entire show last weekend! It was definitely a SIGHT to behold!
The music composer’s Dil Se Re solo performance is just soulful and compelling that makes every fans move…and even the stage. The moment was just an absolute delight to witness when he hit the chorus while his stage was being lifted up. (Exhilarating view)
The band and musicians deserve a special recognition. Each of them gave a fantastic performance that night, ripping the stage and souls of every concertgoer. It was simply enthralling and exciting.
Massive kudos to our Malaysian Production Team
The visuals and audio that Team Sound & Light (M) Sdn Bhd delivered that night was astounding. It’s an A+ presentation from our fellow Malaysians. Especially, the visuals for Singappeney, Ponni Nadhi, Hayati, Azhagiye Marry Me and Adheera was remarkable. Little that everyone has probably noticed, the stage lighting was literally moving from the waves and music presented by our Indian pride. Additionally, DMY Creation’s fireworks show made the evening even more fabulous. (It was breathtaking)
Team Sound & Light (M) Sdn Bhd have even crafted their name in the Malaysia Book of Records for organising the Largest Concert Production. (Well deserved)

Dancers’ dazzling and energetic dancing, as well as exquisite aerial performances, added to the splendour of the musical performance. Due to the lack of screen time given to them, the dancers couldn’t be seen but nevertheless, they were truly phenomenal.
The Stellar of the Night, Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza ’s Munbe Vaa Rendition, was just out of the world!
The stadium was filled with the aesthetically pleasing voice of the Malaysian Diva, Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza . The high notes that Datuk Siti sang, left everyone with goosebumps. High notes, Tamil pronunciation, and singing were all seamlessly clean. It was PERFECT !
The surreal moment was dreamlike to the extent that she received 71k standing ovations with deafening applause.
The next day, Siti shares an Instagram story of her daughter singing to this Tamil song. This quickly gained traction on social media platforms, even capturing the attention of AR Rahman himself. He even reshared this cute story posted by Siti.
So cute 💕, even Dato’ Siti Nurhaliza daughter memories the song 🫶🏻😂 @sheryaghoshaI #SitiNurhaliza #MunbeVaa #ARRahmanLiveInMalaysia pic.twitter.com/nkP5KHFORg — ♠️ 𝒒𝒖𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒐𝒇 𝒔𝒑𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒔 ♠️ (@imazar_) January 30, 2023
AR Rahman gives everyone an euphonious glimpse of Raagas
He showcased around 11 Raagas featuring his songs from Alai Kadal to Ottagattae Kattiko. The whole rendition was spellbinding chaperoned by the brilliant singers.
The LAST FIVE
The last five songs towards the end were BANGERS! The whole crowd stood and sang all the way. These were some of the 90’s Tamil Hit songs from the Isai Puyal; Secret of Success and Mustafa Mustafa was the highlight as fans were seen singing and vibing in groups. AR Rahman wrapped up the concert with his Award-Winning song, Vande Mataram, as he paid his special tribute to his motherland, India. (This was such an emotional moment, and teary eyes can be seen from the man himself and also the audiences).
However…
Yes, the concert was an absolute delight for all Rahamanians, but there were complaints flooding all over social media from concertgoers due to alleged management mishaps.
The crowd management could have been improved. With 71k over people attending the concert, DMY Creation could have considered deploying more crew members and volunteers. Most of the attendees were seen ranting on social media on how they were lost looking for the direction and the lengthy queue lines at the respective gates.
Next, while waiting for others to enter the stadium, they could have played some ARR hits to blow off steam and hype up the crowd. Only the host was seen passing the time by interacting with the audience. However, it still didn’t seem to have lessened the audience’s boredom.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s entry could have been better. All of a sudden, people were seen cheering until the big screen showed him entering the stadium. They could have considered playing any song or BGM for the leader’s entry, but it was just him and his wife walking towards the seat, chaperoning to the cheering and clapping sounds of the concertgoers.
It was already 8.20pm, but a lot of people seemed lost looking for seats. People who were standing ended up sitting on the stairs because the zones were already completely occupied.
With that all being said, this is the debut concert of DMY Creation. They deserve big ups for pulling off such a big event and bringing the iconic figure to Malaysia. Thank you DMY Creation.
Taking all the complaints into account, DMY Creation’s founder and chairman, Dato Mohamed Yusoff released a video addressing all the criticisms they received.

Likewise, we hope that DMY Creation will return stronger with more fantastic concerts and show.
Last but not least, a big THANKS to Isai Puyal for bestowing Malaysians with your MAGIC!

AR Rahman concert: The colorful history of musical fiascos in recent times
While AR Rahman’s Chennai event may have left fans scarred and rattled, he is not the only artist whose mega concerts ran into serious mismanagement concerns.
The recent Rahman concert in Chennai that took place on Sunday has been making headlines and for all the wrong reasons. On September 10, the music maestro's gig, 'Marakumma Nenjam', which translates to 'Can the Heart Ever Forget' was definitely an unforgettable event/night for many devout Rahmaniyans due to overcrowding and a stampede-like situation resulting in women being molested, children being separated and many getting injured.
The Tamil Nadu Police has launched a probe into the chaos that took place at Adityaram Palace City in ECR. Tambaram Police Commissioner Dr Amalraj said they will investigate the reasons for traffic congestion, arrangements for parking, medical requirements and overall arrangements. He told NDTV that measures will be taken to avert a repeat.
While the venue could host around 25,000 people, nearly double that number of people turned up for the event with tickets in hand. With no space to enter, many had to turn back in anguish. There were also comments that there was no VIP section although separate tickets were sold at exorbitant prices. Several fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to share their traumatic experiences, calling the whole thing a scam and blaming the musician.
However, this is not the first such case of mismanagement by singers and organizers. We look at recent concerts that have gone terribly wrong in India and abroad:
1. Arijit Singh's Ahmedabad concert: Last year's Christmas was anything but merry as there were multiple fans who sustained serious injuries when they tried to make their way into the event. One of the fans took to Twitter to call out the organizers for 'poor management' while informing that a friend of his had to undergo surgery for the injuries he sustained at the concert. The fan, who goes by the Twitter handle @Sarafprasang tweeted, "@arijitsingh look what the mismanagement at the Ahmedabad concert has caused us! A friend is going under surgery right now due to poor management. Zero support from the crew, post this disastrous incident."
2. 'Calm Down' singer Rema's Mumbai concert: Nigerian singer Divine Ikubor aka Rema was in India for his three-city tour. Although he took over the stage this year on May 13 with his electrifying performances, there were a couple of misses at this gig too. The biggest miss here was the event starting extremely late. The concert began around 8:45 pm though the time mentioned on the Paytm Insider (booking website for the event) was 5 pm, approximately 4 hours later than the scheduled time.
3. Beyonce slammed for performing at a private Dubai concert: This was Queen Bey's first stage performance in four years since 2018. She performed for 90 minutes to mark the opening of a luxury hotel at Atlantis The Royal in return for a reported fee of £19.4 million (USD 24 million) which resulted in mixed reactions from her followers. Beyonce, a longtime ally of the LGBTQ community, even celebrated Black queer culture with her recent album 'Renaissance' and dedicated it to her Uncle Jonny, who was gay. Considering Dubai's incredibly strict laws against same-sex relationships (which can even be punishable by death), many fans were confused as to why Beyonce accepted the invitation.
No beef but I’m struggling to understand why Beyoncé, who has half a billion dollars, would accept 20 million dollars to make her debut performance of the Renaissance album, a record which lifts heavily from queer culture, in Dubai, a country where LGBT rights aren’t recognised. — douglas greenwood (@douglasgrnwd) January 22, 2023
4. Justin Bieber's failed Mumbai concert: The much anticipated Bieber fever which took place on May 10, 2017, left many fans utterly disappointed. Infuriated Beliebers, who attended the concert, gushed their anger on Twitter sharing that Justin seemed completely unprepared as he was not singing himself to even one song. The expectations of 56,000 people who crammed into DY Patil Stadium for the Purpose tour were shattered to pieces as the Canadian pop star didn't try to hide his lip-syncing, even wiping his mouth with a towel mid-song. His attire on that day (casual shorts and T-shirt) also went down badly among some, who had expected him to make more of an effort. Certain celebs even left the premises even before the concert was over.
5. KK's death post-Kolkata concert: This was one of the worst news ever to both fans as well as the industry. Indian singer Krishnakumar Kunnath, popularly known as KK, died of a suspected heart attack at age 53 after performing on May 31, 2022. The singer was in the city for a two-day event. He also posted photos from the concert hours before his death. As soon as the news broke, people from all walks of life paid tribute.

Amitabh Bachchan was honoured with the Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Puraskar on April 24, Wednesday, at Mumbai's Vile Parle area. Big B received the award on the memorial day of Deenanath Mangeshkar, the theatre-music veteran and father of Mangeshkar siblings. Apart from Big B, music maestro AR Rahman received Master Deenanath Mangeshkar Puraskar for his contribution to Indian music.

Speaking at the event, Amitabh Bachchan said, "I'm fortunate to receive this award today. I never really regarded myself worthy of such an award, but Hridyanath ji tried hard so that I could come here. He even invited me for this ceremony last year."
He continued, "Hridaynath ji, I apologise to you for last time. I had then told you I was unwell. I was healthy but didn't want to come here. This year I had no excuse, so I had to come here."
Amitabh Bachchan, in his speech, said that his father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, a celebrated Hindi poet, loved Lata Mangeshkar's voice and compared it to 'shehad ki dhaar'. "The sweetness in her voice was honey and as the flow of honey never breaks, her 'swar' never breaks. Whenever someone hits the right chord, our soul meets with 'parmatma' . And Lata Mangeshkar ji's 'swar' joins us with God," he added.

AR Rahman gives shoutout to Taylor Swift on release of new album, netizen says 'legend recognises legend'
Music maestro ar rahman on wednesday took to his x (formerly twitter) handle to give a shoutout to singer taylor swift on the success of her recently released album, the tortured poets department..
Check out the post:
Soon after Rahman gave a shoutout to Taylor Swift on X, netizens started pouring in their reactions on the post. One user wrote, ''legend recognises legend!'' ''Oscar winning music director from India wishing taylor swift makes my day!,'' worte another.
'The Tortured Poets Department' is the 11th studio album by Swift for which she has worked with Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessne. The album was announced by Swift at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards on February 4, 2024. It became the most streamed album on Spotify in a single day with 300 million streams.
Swift not only claimed the top spot but also secured her position as the most-streamed artiste in a single day on the platform. She created the album while working on her Eras Tour. It is a double album, with the second part, subtitled The Anthology, released two hours after the first. American rapper-singer Post Malone features on the opening track Fortnight, which was released as the lead single.
Meanwhile, Taylor Swift recently entered in the prestigious list of World's Billionaires by Forbes. Her net worth has exceeded a billion-dollar mark, making her the first artist to achieve this milestone solely on the basis of songwriting and performing. As per the portal, her 190 million USD earnings post-tax from her Eras Tours have helped her to get into the three-comma club.
Other industry heavyweights to achieve this milestone include Rihanna, and Jay-Z, who have earned this status via entertainment holdings, fashion brands and alcohol companies, among other ventures.
