The Bahamian nation consists of 700 islands spread out across 100,000 square miles. While there is a specific allure to each of these outer islands, we recommend you resist the temptation to swim with pigs, in favor of booking an authentic cultural experience in the Bahamian city of Nassau.

Located on the island of New Providence, Nassau is the political and cultural capital of the island chain. We recommend staying there for your first trip to the Bahamas—and for at least a few days during each trip after that, as it is the most exciting region in the Bahamas for its unique heritage, festivals, culinary scene, and nightlife. Day One: Morning

10 a.m.: Though there’s no shortage of luxury resorts in Nassau, we recommend opting for a more authentically Bahamian experience by checking into the Compass Point Beach Resort . The colorful Junkanoo -inspired architecture encompasses the vibrant energy of the capital city itself, while the luxuriously bohemian accommodations have served as creative inspiration for none other than Mick Jagger.

5 p.m.: Take advantage of a free afternoon with either a brew from the Pirate Republic Brewery or a Rum Dum from the John Watling's Distillery. The world is your oyster because, if you're visiting in the summer or fall, expect to encounter a downtown scene that is refreshingly free of crowds. The peak tourist season in the Bahamas is around Christmas Time and Spring Break when the weather is colder up North. Day One: Evening

6 p.m.: Our biggest recommendation for dinnertime the first evening you arrive in the Bahamas? A home-cooked meal hosted by a local family in Nassau, of course. 8 p.m.: Another no-brainer evening activity when you’re looking to spend a jam-packed 48 hours in Nassau? The fish fry, of course. Day Two: Morning & Afternoon

You’ll leave in the afternoon with a thorough appreciation of the Bahamian culinary tradition—not to mention a greater understanding of the nation’s history. Walking through downtown Nassau, you can’t help but observe that the vividly-hued street art and design is reminiscent of your accommodations at Compass Point. This, too, traces back to the founding of the Bahamas as a sovereign nation, as it is also influenced by the Junkanoo celebrations. The Junkanoo is a distinctly Bahamian tradition that traces back to the 17th century, when enslaved Bahamians would celebrate their right to happiness and self-expression twice a year, on Christmas and Boxing Day. 

1:30 p.m.: Tour historic sites including the Queen’s staircase on a Bahamas Bowcar tour. The breeze from the open-air vehicle is a refreshing counterbalance to the tropical heat, while the informative guides (who double as Nascar-worthy drivers navigating the busy Bahamian roads) will leave you with an indelible knowledge of the island’s history.

Day Two: Evening

5 p.m.: Embark on a two-hour sunset sail with Sea Horse Sailing Adventures and appreciate the island chain as it was first navigated—by pirates, of course. Additionally, the water in the Bahamas is perfect for swimming year-round. So regardless of when you're there you can go fishing, diving, sailing, and all manner of boating. You will get a sense of the number of islands in the archipelago, as well. While the majority of Bahamians reside in the city of Nassau, there are plenty of additional activities and sites to explore in the Out Islands of the Bahama, as well—in Andros, Bimini, Eleuthera, Abaco, and Exuma. Less-populated than the country’s capital, many of these out islands (also known as "family islands") have more pristine wilderness than is found in the city of Nassau. Though, currently, the most famed activity is probably the swimming pigs of Exuma—thanks to Instagram, of course.

7:30 p.m.: Finally, a trip to Nassau isn’t complete without sampling the cigars, chocolate, pizza, and wine—a truly iconic combination of offerings—on display at Graycliff Manor. Enjoy cocktails in the evening and experience the lounge, tropical atmosphere of a sophisticated night out. You will surely spend some time at the beach if you've come to the Bahamas. Luckily, all of the Bahamian islands have beautiful beaches to choose from. If we had to suggest a specific one, it would be the highly photogenic Pink Sand Beach on Harbour Island. This three-mile stretch of soft, pink sand — which gets its color from seashells and microscopic organisms called foraminifera — is a place to go for total relaxation. Bring a book, or just plan on spending your time staring at your gorgeous surroundings in total awe. 

Charter a boat

Get out and experience the azure waters surrounding the Bahamas by booking a day trip on a boat, or chartering a private vessel with a captain who will happily lead you on a dive or snorkel adventure. Deep-sea fishing excursions are also available via chartered boat.

Get a day pass to Atlantis

You don't have to be an overnight guest to experience the fun that Atlantis resort has to offer. All you need to do is purchase a day pass, and you'll have access to the thrilling 141-acre Aquaventure water park , which includes pools, beaches, a rapid river, and waterslides. If that's not enough, try your luck in the casino, play a round of golf, or have a meal at one of multiple on-site restaurants.

Explore a national park

Lucayan National Park on Grand Bahama Island is another must-see spot. Here, visitors can kayak through mangroves or simply go for a stroll, spotting local flora and fauna.

Best Restaurants 

For a five-star dining experience, book a table at Graycliff , an upscale restaurant set in an 18th-century mansion on West Hill Street in Nassau. Expect conch soup and lobster, plus plenty of freshly caught fish.   

Anchor Bay Fish Fry

For a more low-key dining experience, head to Anchor Bay in Governor's Harbour for its beloved fish fry. The event is held every Friday and includes plates of fried fish and other local delicacies. 

Travelers will have one more meal to dress up for at Dune , located at The Ocean Club, a Four Seasons Resort. With a menu by chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, expect delicious offerings like yellowfin tartare, shrimp satay, and roasted grouper with lime chili sauce. 

Peak season lasts from mid-December to mid-April, when the weather is at its most glorious. This is also when crowds descend on the islands, so you'll have to contend with higher prices and other tourists.

It never gets much colder than 60 degrees Fahrenheit in the Bahamas, so there's not really a "bad" time to visit. Do keep in mind that the Atlantic hurricane season stretches from June to November, though, which is worth considering when you're booking your trip.

The summer months are also rainy, but there will be fewer visitors and more affordable rates. Tourist numbers dip lowest in September and October, so plan a trip during these months if you want to visit the Bahamas when crowds are at their thinnest.

Plenty of travelers fly into the Caribbean — there are 20 international airports across the islands, with regularly scheduled flights from around the world. Nassau is the most connected destination, while getting to the Out Islands can be a bit more complicated (though totally worth it). Your flight to the Out Islands will probably connect via Nassau. Private charters are a popular option, too.

Cruises might be the most common way to get to the Bahamas. Most cruise lines stop in the Bahamas along their Caribbean routes , and some brands even have private islands in the archipelago, including Disney Cruise Line ( Castaway Cay ); Carnival Cruise Line ( Half Moon Cay ); Norwegian Cruise Line ( Great Stirrup Cay ); Princess Cruises (Princess Cays); MSC Cruises ( Ocean Cay — MSC Marine Reserve ); and Royal Caribbean International ( Perfect Day at CocoCay ). Virgin Voyages has a private destination on Bimini called the Beach Club at Bimini , and Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville brand has a Margaritaville at Sea cruise ship that sails from the Port of Palm Beach to Grand Bahama Island on a regular basis.

There are more than 700 islands in the Bahamas, and while visiting them all is a lofty goal, it's reasonable to see a few during one trip. “Visit one of the 30 other inhabited islands outside of Nassau," Nguyen says. "If you’ve only ever been to Nassau, you haven’t seen all the Bahamas has for you.”

Here are a few islands to consider for your itinerary. 

Grand Bahama: A visit to Grand Bahama means getting to experience the archipelago's best outdoor adventures. Snorkeling and diving guides lead aquatic adventures here, and land lovers can relax on famed beaches like Lucaya Beach and Gold Rock Beach. Grand Bahama is also home to Lucayan National Park, which means there is plenty of wildlife spotting to do, too. 

Harbour Island: Those looking for an enchanting and colorful experience need not look further than Harbour Island. This is where visitors will find Insta-famous, pastel-colored homes shaded by palm trees. There are gorgeous beaches here, too, Pink Sand Beach is certainly the most famous.

Exumas: Another Insta-famous destination, Exumas is where you'll find friendly pigs swimming in the sea, and they're eager for you to come and say hello. If you're sticking around on this island, dig your umbrella into the sand at Coco Plum Beach. 

New Providence Island : You can't really skip New Providence, as it’s home to Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas and the most common gateway to the islands. Urban hustle and bustle meets serene island escapism in this city, and in all the right ways. Leave time to explore the museums and beaches, and spend a night on the town to feel the city's energy after dark.

Rental car: If you plan to stay on one island for a while, book a rental car so you can get around with ease. Options are abundant at the airport in Nassau, including known brands like Avis, Hertz, and Budget. See all the options here . 

Taxi: Taxi services will get you from point A to point B, and rates are fixed by the government , so it's easy to estimate your fare. Ride-shares like Uber and Lyft do not operate on the island. But, if you want to schedule a ride, try the local Let’s Go Bahama app .

Intra-island flights: There are both scheduled intra-island flights and chartered flights available throughout the Bahamas. Bahamasair offers routes between Treasure Cay and Marsh Harbor in Abacos, and Nassau to Great Exuma. Other airline options for getting around the islands include Flamingo Air and Western Air. These 15 tips will save you mega bucks on your next trip to Bahamas while still having a memorable vacation.

1. Book the Lowest cost Transport:

For on land travel, you most affordable option is the minibus which is ideal if your staying in Nassau or Freeport.  A Minibus trip can cost you as little as 1.25BSD or $1.25 USD.

However, they do stop running at 6pm.

Water Taxi:

Water Taxis run every hour for 6 BSD ($6USD) from Nassau to Paradise island. This is a fun and affordable way to get around, locally.

Mail Boats - Inter-island Travel:

Mail boats are a unique & budget way of traveling around the Bahamas Islands. As they are typically used for carrying freight such as mail, they are not the fastest or the most comfortable, but they are definitely affordable & an interesting adventure.

Inter Island Flights:

If you would like something faster, then it's best to explore the option of Inter island flights, using local carriers such as Bahamas Air. If booked advance, the price can be reasonable.

Taxi Costs:

Taxis in the Bahamas have government regulated fairs (Supposedly). But to help you out we have listed the average cost of taxis in a table with difference points in Nassau.

Do they have Uber in the Bahamas?

Uber is not common in the bahamas, although a small number do operate near to Palm Beach & Broward. Uber, the taxi alternative, is available in Broward and Palm Beach in the Bahamas.

2. Don't Tip Extra in Restaurants:

In most restaurants in the Bahamas, they include a 15% service charge on your bill. So you don't need to pay any extra. You can even ask to have this removed if you were unhappy with the service.

Cook your own meals:

If your purchased a self catering accommodation, then why not save even more money by buying food from the supermarket & cooking it at home. Groceries will cost approximately 60 BSD per week which include pasta, vegetables, chicken etc.

3. Book your flights in advance during low season:

The Bahamas has gorgeous, warm temperatures all year around (over 60's 'F) . The high season is between  December-April  and is peak time to visit when the weather is at it's best and many tourists are escaping their harsh winters.

However, in terms of affordability the lowest cost time to travel to the Bahamas is between  June-November,  this is the low season with less tourists and warm weather. However, this is also the time in which hurricanes are more likely so get travel insurance before and get weather reports leading up to your trip.

4. Traveling in Low Season also has other perks!

Traveling in low season between June-November also has other perks such as lower accommodation & tour costs.

5. Drink rum not Beer...

If you like a drink then you should definitely opt for drinking the local Caribbean delicacy of rum. Most of the other liquor in the Bahamas is imported so expect prices to be higher.

6. Camp on the Beach!

If you really wish to save on costs & experience the great outdoors you should definitely consider camping in Bahamas! Apart from the star gazing it also has other perks such as very low prices compared to a hotel. However, camping seems to be NOT ALLOWED on public lands for the most part! However, you can camp on private grounds. For example:

Sivandah Yoga Retreat  on Paradise Island let guests who are part of there yoga program camp on their private beach land. They also have their own lodging.

7. Use a Bicycle for day trips

The freedom, the wind in your hair! There is no better way to explore an area then via a bicycle. With well maintained roads and low traffic this is a great option. You can bring your own bike, purchase one on the island or simply rent.  Zoom Bicycle rentals are a popular provider.

8. Get Nightlife discount vouchers from Hostels.

Many hostels offer special low cost nightlife packages & deals. So be sure to stay in one a few nights just to take advantage of these.

9. Mingle with the Locals (People to People Scheme)

You don't have to splash out on an expensive tour guide to experience local culture & gain that local knowledge.

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism has created whats called the  People-to-People scheme.  From the  Bahamas website , you can fill in the form & be matched with a knowledgeable local to help guide you around the Bahamas. This is a fantastic scheme!

10. Visit a FREE Museum

The majority of museums in the Bahamas are either free or have a very low cost! For example, the Buena Vista Plantation and John Watling's Distillery is FREE.

Low cost Museums:

• Pompey Museum of Slavery and Emancipation  - Admission is $2.50 for adults & $1 for kids.
• Wyannie Malone Historical Museum  - Admission is $4 for adults, and $1.60 for kids.
• National Art Gallery of The Bahamas -  Admission is $4 for adults and kids under 12 go free.

11. Visit an Historic Bahamas Fort

Fort Charlotte , was built in 1788 by Lord Dunmore, a colonial governor in the American colonies and The Bahamas. Guided tours are offered on Monday & Wednesday which showcase the Bahamas Defence force performing military drills such as firing cannons!

Admission to Fort Charlotte cost just $4.50 for adults or $2.20 for children.

Fort Fincastle  is a limestone fortress constructed in 1793, to protect Nassau and it's harbor. Daily tours are FREE! (Donations are helpful)

12. FREE Tea Party??

If you time your trip well you may be able to enjoy tea with the wife of the Governor General of the Bahamas! On the last Friday of every month , the Governors wife hosts tea parties at the governors home. (Apart from the months December and June to September).

The event is FREE, you can book the event through your hotel or the local tourist board and a shuttle even picks you up from your hotel. There is also tasty local foods and live entertainment!

13. Explore the Garden of the Groves:

Located in Freeport on  Grand Bahama Island , is 12 acres of natural paradise which is home to a spectrum of vibrant wildlife such as tropical birds and alligators.  There is also cascading waterfalls, lakes and over 11,000 different plant varieties.

Admission is 16.50 BSD and includes a guided tour. The park is open between (9am-4pm)

14. Head to Lucayan National Park

Lucayan National Park is located in Grand Bahama, and consists of 40acres of lush wilderness with the world largest underwater cave system! These limestone caves offer over 6miles of chartered tunnels, however only experienced divers can explore them.

For the rest of use, we can enjoy the fantastic hiking trails through the lush pine forests which lead to Gold rock beach.

Admission costs just 3BSD (not alot for all that epic scenery!) The park is open between 8:30AM-4:30pm each day.

Kayaking is an amazing experience at Lucayan National Park.

15. Book your Accommodation in Advance

Bahamas 6 Day Itinerary:

Day 1: nassau attractions & culture.

Nassau is the capital of the Bahamas. Its crystal waters & coral reefs make it a fantastic hub for diving & snorkeling. We ticked off all the sights first & relaxed on the beaches during our last day.

Head downtown to explore Nassaus history, vibrant culture and jaw dropping architecture. I highly recommend a food tour, for a tongue tantalising experience. Other great attractions & activities include:

• Pirates of Nassau Museum.
• National Art Gallery
• John Watling’s Rum Distillery.
• Straw Market.
• Parliament Square.

One of my favourites has to be the Pirates of Nassau Museum, this is great fun for people of all ages.

Day 2: Nassau Aquaventure

If you wish to dive right into some excitement, I would definitely recommended heading to Aquaventure. A 141-acre aquatic center featuring high-speed waterslides, a lazy river & swimming pools. This place is great for families, but also includes highlights for everyone!

For example, adrenaline junkies can take a thrilling waterslide which plunges through a shark tank! While others may chose to get up close and personal with the cute dolphins & sea lions.

Bahamas on a Budget Tip:  How to go for FREE?

To enter the amazing Park for  FREE,  you will need to stay at the  Atlantis Resort  for at least two nights. Another option, is the  Comfort Suites  just next door. These both offer a FREE day pass for the park, complementary.

Afterwards dine at one of the 21 restaurants onsite, and then hit the dance floor in the evening at the Aura nightclub.

Day 3: Nassau to George Town, Exuma

Transport – nassau to george town, exuma:.

After exploring Nassau, head to the George Town, Exuma by ferry , flight or if your on a budget hop on board the mailboat!

Budget Mail Boat from Nassau to Exuma:

The Mail boat to Exuma, is a really fun but also budget way of traveling around Bahamas Islands. As they are typically used for carrying freight such as mail, they are not the fastest or the most comfortable but they are definitely affordable & an adventure.

To book your tickets, check availability & schedules at the  Dock Master’s office on (242) 393-1064.

A popular one to George town leaves, from the east side Potters Cay Dock, 4 & 5:30 every Tuesday. This will act as your overnight accommodation (14 hour journey), and transport for $60 per person one way.

The sleeping quarters are basic bunks in air conditioned cabins. For dinner, you will get a meal the same as the crew on board! This is an adventurous unique experience, if nothing else.

While on board keep an eye out for the theatrical sunset & even a few dolphins jumping out of the crystal waters!

Day 4: George Town, Exuma:

Depending upon whether you take a flight from Nassau to George town, Cruise or Mail boat will determine how long you have here. Either way, I would recommended a Bahamian Breakfast at  Make Club Peace and Plenty  this is also a great place to stay.

George Town, Exuma is the perfect place to Spring Board yourself of onto various islands, day trips & excursions.

Stocking Island:

Regular water taxis run to Stocking Island, just off Georetown port. Here you can find scenic beaches, resorts and a hive of Snorkeling and diving. You can even swim with stingrays!

If your in George town on Friday, be sure to check out the popular “Fish Fry Friday” , events such as the  Annual Cruising Regatta  also are exciting events to attend.

Day 5: Visit the Swimming Pigs on Pig Island?

Thats right, real life piggies swimming in the Bahamas crystal waters! Sounds like the stuff of fairytales, but this is a real place!

Where did the Pigs come from?

There are a range of myths & legends explaining how to the swimming pigs arrived in the Bahamas. One is that a group of sailors, dropped them here but due to unforeseen circumstances didn’t return to cook & eat them.

Another legend, says that they are lone survivors of a shipwreck and they swam to shore. Who knows?? Either way they are a unique phenomenon.

Where is Pig Island?

Big major clay:.

Pig Beach  is located on a small uninhabited island called  Big Major Clay  in the  Exuma region . Around 20 pigs live there, and bask in crystal waters of the island paradise. Big Major clay is actually very far out from the major tourist areas of the Bahamas. Around 50 miles from George town and over 80 miles from Nassau.

Exuma District:

The Exuma  is an area of the Bahamas with over 360 islands! It is world renowned as one of the most beautiful island chains in the entire Caribbean.

Some of the Islands in Exuma are privately owned by movies stars such as  Johnny Depp  and even the famous Magician David Copperfield! (Maybe he made the pigs appear…abracadabra, Oink Oink!)

Compass Cay – Shark Island!

Compass Cay is another fantastic island in the Exuma district. Known for it’s protected harbor area which is famous for a large population of Friendly Sharks!

You read that correct “Friendly Sharks”, the sharks at Compass Cay are nurse sharks and are for the most part harmless to humans! Although, they can grow as large as 14ft and weigh between 200-330lbs so can still be intimidating for some!

Allens Cay – Iguanas:

While the Pigs cause many to flock to Big Major Cay, Allens Cay is a hub for a variety of Iguanas & other reptiles. The Iguanas here are the  Northern Bahamian Rock  Iguana & are endangered & indigenous to these islands.

Popular tours offer the chance to feed the Iguanas, fruits or Vegetables. They love the beach so are easy to spot!

Fun Fact:  The Iguanas here can live up to 40 years!

Great Exuma Island:

Great Exuma Island , is a fantastic place to stay if you really want that authentic island paradise in addition to be close to the unique swimming pigs & the Cay Islands.

They have plenty of resorts, which offer unbelievable views such as  Sandals Emerald Bay.

Day 6: Head Back to Nassau

If you have extra days definitely spend a few more in Great Exuma Island, before flying back from George town.

However, if you have just 7 days and plan on catching the budget mail boat back then now is a good time to set of back to Nassau.  Be sure to check ferry times & book well in advance.

Day 7: Nassau Beaches

Of course the best things in Life are FREE, so why not explore the beaches in Nassau which are a paradise of golden sands, they offer a true heavenly experience:

• Cable Beach.
• Love Beach.
• Saunders Beach.
• Junkanoo Beach.
• Cave Beach.
• Jaws Beach and Clifton Heritage Park.

Cable Beach

Cable Beach in Nassau is probably the most popular beach in Nassau. A popular hub of all inclusive beach resorts and with plenty of restaurants & shops nearby.

Love Beach is situated just 20 minutes from downtown Nassau and offers a completely different vibe compared to Nassau Beach. It’s prized gem is it’s 40 acres of coral which is great for snorkeling!

1. Go diving in the Tongue of the Ocean

The “Tongue of the Ocean” is an oceanic trench that runs between Andros Island and New Providence. The Andros Barrier Reef is the third largest barrier reef in the world and is spectacular for diving. This submerged geological feature is actually part of the underwater Great Bahama Canyon and the wall of the trench plunges from 120 feet (about 37 meters) to an almost 6,000-foot drop (nearly 2,000 meters) to the seabed where divers can see turtles, lobsters, tropical fish, and get up close and personal with reef sharks as they swarm in to feed. 2. Indulge at Atlantis

This is one of the most expensive hotels in the world but its water park is fun (albeit pricey) and makes for a nice day trip. It’s a tropical luxury experience with perfect white sand beaches and incredible snorkeling. There are a variety of exhibitions and also interactive animal feedings. The Aquaventure Waterpark has 11 pools, huge water slides, river rapids, and rock climbing. If you’re a foodie, there are 16 restaurants both fine dining and casual, including some celebrity chef establishments. A day pass to the waterpark is 250 BSD if you’re not a hotel guest.

3. Celebrate Junkanoo

Every Boxing Day December 26 and New Year’s Day, Bahamians celebrate their national festival, Junkanoo with vibrant parades, music, and costumes. The tradition comes from the history of enslaved African people who were granted holiday celebrations after Christmas and it continued after their emancipation. Today, it’s a colorful celebration of life and culture that includes brass bands, drums, cowbells, and whistles, providing the soundtrack for thousands of people dancing in the streets. There’s also a mini-festival held in June too.

4. Learn about pirates

The interactive Pirates of Nassau museum is dedicated to the history of piracy during the ‘golden years’ of 1690 to 1720. You’ll walk around replica pirate ships, visit the dungeon, and learn about how pirates set up base here. There are plenty of exhibitions, including displays on female pirates, flags, pirate trials, and treasures and artifacts. There is even an escape room dedicated to the pirate Blackbeard (currently closed due to COVID so check before you go). It’s cheesy but fun. Admission is 13.50 BSD.

5. Visit Harbour Island

Harbour Island, located off the northern tip of Eleuthera, is filled with ritzy resorts and stunning white-and-pink sandy beaches. This tiny island is known for having one of the best beaches in the Bahamas — and incredible weather. You can easily spend a day chilling or snorkeling, swimming, and even horseback riding on the pristine beach. It’s even more expensive than other parts of the Bahamas, so if you want an upscale place for a holiday, this is it. Otherwise, stay on nearby Eleuthera Island and hop over on a day trip.

Other Things to See and Do in the Bahamas

The Exuma Cays is a chain of over 365 islands in the middle of the Bahamas. It has been a protected land and sea park since 1959 — the first marine conservation park of its kind in the world. Spanning over 112,000 acres, the park is home to all kinds of seabirds, as well as groupers and lobsters (much of the area was overfished before the region became protected). Most guided trips are multi-day excursions and cost around 300-325 BSD per day. You can set out on your own kayaking trip for about 50 BSD per day with a rental from Out Island Explorers.

2. Tour the Garden of the Groves

Located on Grand Bahama Island, this 12-acre eco-tourism park is home to alligators, exotic birds, 10,000 different species of plants, four waterfalls, and dozens of lakes. It’s a good place to wander and learn about the ecology of the islands. Admission is 17 BSD.

3. Explore Lucayan National Park

This 40-acre park in Grand Bahama is home to the world’s largest underwater limestone cave system. Most caves are only accessible to experienced divers, although two caves are open for swimming. For everyone else, there are various hiking trails that wind throughout the pine forest and along Gold Rock Beach. Definitely visit Ben’s Cave and Burial Mound Cave while you’re here. Admission to the park is 11 BSD and guided tours are 15 BSD.

4. Hang out at Port Lucaya Marketplace

This 12-acre open-air shopping complex in Freeport has more than 60 shops, a dozen restaurants, 90 vendors, two dozen artists, hair braiders, and even live music. You’ll find great bargains on hand-crafted goods and one-of-a-kind items. It’s touristy, but the locals hang out here too, and there’s plenty to keep you busy. Come here to browse, shop, and people-watch.

5. See Fort Charlotte

Fort Charlotte overlooks the harbor in Nassau and dates to the 1780s. Constructed by British Lord Dunmore, the fort has a large moat, cannons, hidden passageways, and dark dungeons to explore. It was never actually used for defense as it was over budget and poorly designed. For that reason, the fort was nicknamed “Dunmore’s Folly” and abandoned entirely. It’s free to visit.

6. Swim with the pigs

The Bahamas is the official home of the swimming pigs, a group of twenty or so world-famous pigs and piglets living on Pig Beach. Nobody knows how they got there as Big Major Cay is uninhabited and the pigs are not native to the island. You can only get there by boat, and tours aren’t cheap — they start around 250 BSD from Nassau or George Town for a full-day trip, but you’ll get lots of extras like snorkeling gear, lunch, and an open bar. A half-day tour with Four C’s Adventures starts from about 160 BSD per person for three hours. And Pearl Island Bahamas has a 5-hour trip with lunch for 190 BSD. If you’re traveling with friends you can also charter a boat, but it’ll be significantly more expensive.

7. Tour the John Watling’s Distillery

Located in an 18th-century estate, this distillery in downtown Nassau makes delicious homemade rum, which you can sample as you tour the facilities. If rum isn’t your drink of choice, they also make a tasty vodka filtered with pink sand from Eleuthera. Tours are free.

8. Relax on the beach

If you just want to plop down on a sandy beach and relax with a tropical cocktail, you’ll have plenty of options to choose from. Cable Beach and Jaw’s Beach are both located near Nassau and are popular choices. Gold Rock Beach on Grand Bahama Island is worth the trip for crystal clear waters, a white sandy beach, and pure relaxation. The shallow waters with perfect visibility here make for some prime snorkeling opportunities too. On Eleuthera, don’t miss French Leave Beach and Pink Sands Beach.

9. Take a food tour

One of the best ways to sample all the local dishes and learn some of the history and culture behind them is via a food tour. Tru Bahamian Food Tours is one of the most popular choices, offering a couple of different food tours in Nassau. Their main tour lasts five hours and stops at six different eateries, providing ample opportunity to indulge your foodie dreams.

10. See the Ocean Atlas

Located near Nassau , this sculpture by artist Jason deCaires Taylor is located 16 feet (5 meters) underwater. Standing 16 feet tall and weighing some 60 tons, it’s the biggest underwater sculpture in the world, designed to hopefully stimulate coral growth in the area. You can swim or snorkel to see it up close.

Bahamas Travel Costs

Hostel prices – Lodging in the Bahamas is expensive. There are virtually no hostels here since it’s a luxury destination and camping on the beach or on public land is strictly prohibited. Your best bet is to go with either a budget hotel or Airbnb.

Budget hotel prices – Budget three-star hotels start at 100-150 BSD per night. Expect basic amenities like free Wi-Fi and AC. A few hotels also include free breakfast.

Airbnb is available in the Bahamas, with private rooms ranging from 100-140 BSD per night. An entire home/apartment averages 180-240 BSD per night. Book early or prices will double.

Food – Unsurprisingly, traditional cuisine in the Bahamas relies heavily on seafood. Fish, shellfish, and lobster are all common staples, though the national dish is conch (a large sea snail). Tropical fruits and pork round out the diet, with rum being the local drink of choice. Expect to see dishes like stewed fish, johnnycakes (a cornmeal flatbread), baked crab, peas and rice, and cracked conch (deep-fried conch).

While there are lots of places to splurge here, one of the best ways to eat cheap is to do a fish fry. For about 12-15 BSD, restaurants serve you a big plate of delicious seafood, potato salad, Bahamian macaroni and cheese, and peas and rice.

You can grab a breakfast of grits from a food cart for less than 3 BSD, while a plate of fish tacos or chicken wings from a food truck is around 10 BSD.

Bakeries and cafes serve filling fast food like Jamaican-style patties starting from 3 BSD. For meals like clam chowder or jerk chicken, expect to pay 8-15 BSD. Meals at a western restaurant start from 15 BSD for a burger with fries, while fast food (think McDonald’s) costs about 8.50 BSD for a combo meal.

For fine dining, you’ll spend 40-50 BSD for an entrée like lamb or pork loin from a resort or high-end restaurant.

Beer is around 5 BSD, as is a latte or cappuccino. Bottled water is 2 BSD.

If you plan on cooking your own food, expect to spend around 60-70 BSD per week for groceries. That gets you basic staples like rice, seasonal vegetables, and some chicken or seafood.

Backpacking the Bahamas Suggested Budgets

If you’re backpacking the Bahamas, my suggested budget is around 140 BSD per day. This covers staying in a private Airbnb room, cooking all your meals, limiting your drinking, taking cheap public transportation to get around, and sticking to mostly free activities like swimming and hiking. If you find a spot at one of the hostels, plan on 100 BSD per day.

On a mid-range budget of about 195 BSD per day, you can stay in a budget hotel, eat out for most meals, have a few drinks, take the occasional taxi to get around, and do more paid activities like rent a kayak or go diving.

On a “luxury” budget of 340 BSD or more per day, you can stay in a nice three-star hotel, eat out anywhere you want, drink more, island hop, and do whatever activities you want. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages – some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in BSD.

Bahamas Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

The Bahamas is expensive as it mostly caters to vacationers who want to splash out on luxury. However, with a little creativity, you can manage to visit without going bust. Here are some ways to save money in the Bahamas:

• Stay with a local – Use Couchsurfing to stay with locals for free. It’s not fancy, but you’ll save money and get to connect with a local who can share their insider tips and advice. There aren’t a lot of hosts here, however, so send your requests early.
• Use nightclub passes – Many hotels and even taxi drivers will sell you a discounted pass to get into the clubs around town. This is a particularly good value if you are visiting on a weekend when cover charges may be 50 BSD at a swanky spot.
• Drink rum – Imported alcohol is expensive in the Bahamas so stick to local rum if you’re going to be drinking
• Get free stuff – Many hotels offer free use of snorkeling equipment, include free breakfast, and arrange free or cheap organized excursions. Always ask to see what free stuff is available!
• Bring a water bottle – The tap water here is safe to drink so bring a reusable water bottle to save money and reduce your plastic use. LifeStraw is my go-to brand as their bottles have built-in filters to ensure your water is always clean and safe.
• Look for discounts – The Bahamas tourism website (nassauparadiseisland.com/deals) often lists great one-off deals, like discounted hotel rooms or book-a-third-night-free deals. Check it out before you book to see if anything catches your eye.
• Cook your own food – Eating out for every meal will ruin your budget. Cook your own meals to save money. It won’t be fancy, but you can use those savings for fun activities instead!

Where to Stay in the Bahamas

Budget accommodation is severely limited in the Bahamas so you’ll need to plan ahead and book early. Here are a few suggested places to stay:

How to Get Around the Bahamas

Fly – You can fly between islands quickly and conveniently, especially to the more remote areas. Bahamasair, Pineapple Air, and Western Air all operate within the islands. A flight from Nassau to Eleuthera takes 20 minutes and costs about 115 BSD, while Nassau to George Town (Exuma) is a 40-minute flight for around 135 BSD. The longest route is Nassau to Inagua, which is about 165 BSD and takes 90 minutes.

Ferry – The ferry service in the Bahamas is run by Bahamas Ferries, with frequent high-speed services between Nassau and Eleuthera, and less frequent services between Nassau and Andros, Long Island, and Grand Exuma. Some of these routes take a long time (Nassau to Long Island is 19 hours and only runs once a week). Prices vary so ask your accommodation for a current price list.

Bus – In Nassau, you can take private minibusses (also known as jitneys ) everywhere, with fares between 1.25-2.50 BSD. It’s a pretty casual service and there’s no real timetable or set route so you’ll have to ask the driver about your destination. Freeport also has jitneys to Port Lucaya but these services often do not run at night though.

Taxi – Taxis in the Bahamas are safe and reliable, and readily available everywhere in Nassau and Freeport (less so in smaller towns). Their base rate is 4.50 BSD and then 3.75 BSD per additional mile. They add up fast, however, so skip them if you can.

Water taxi – There are often water taxis navigating back and forth between Nassau and Paradise Island, as well as taxis that run shorter routes between Mangrove Cay and South Andros. Fares depend entirely on the company but usually cost around 20 BSD.

Car rental – This is one of the best ways to get around (especially if you’re sharing a ride). Rentals aren’t cheap, costing around 60 BSD per day, however, if you can share a ride you’ll save money and have a lot of flexibility. Just remember that you’ll be driving on the left! When to Go to the Bahamas

Mid-December to mid-April is the country’s peak tourist season and this is the best time to visit for hot temperatures as daily highs range between 26-28°C (80-84°F).

Although peak season is when room rates are the highest and tourist crowds are the thickest, I still recommend going during this time to avoid hurricane season (which is between June-November). Otherwise, you’ll be at risk for tropical storms, and most of those months also fall into the region’s rainy season, which will prevent you from enjoying all the Bahamas’ natural wonders!

How to Stay Safe in the Bahamas

While the Bahamas are mostly considered safe, there are some areas of Nassau that experience more crime. Avoid the city’s “over the hill” (south of Shirley Street) after dark, especially if you’re alone.

That said, most of this crime is targeted at other Bahamians so you don’t need to worry too much. Just follow normal common sense precautions. Don’t leave your valuables out in the open at the beach (or anywhere). If you rent a vehicle, don’t leave any valuables in it overnight as break-ins can occur.

Solo female travelers should generally feel safe here. However, the standard precautions apply (never leave your drink unattended at the bar, never walk home alone intoxicated, etc.).

If you experience an emergency, dial 911 or 919 for assistance.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past.

Bahamas Great Itineraries: Island-Hopping for 1 Week

Island-hopping for 1 week.

The Bahamas is comprised of more than 700 islands, yet many visitors experience just one in a single visit. With limited scheduled transportation between the islands, it’s difficult to island-hop without going back to Nassau for each leg, but this itinerary shows how you can use mail boats, speed boats, and scheduled flights to experience Nassau, Paradise Island, Rose Island, Sandals Island, mainland Exuma, and a handful of the Exuma cays and do it all in just a week, provided you arrive in Nassau on a Monday since the mail boat to George Town leaves on Tuesday.

1 Day: Nassau

Explore the sprawling marine habitat, face your fears on the exhilarating waterslides (including a clear acrylic slide that plunges through a shark tank), and get up close with sea lions and dolphins at the iconic Atlantis Resort. A new policy limits Aquaventure access to resort guests or cruise-ship passengers (with a day pass) so you’ll need to plan on at least one night in the sprawling resort or at Comfort Suites next door. Dine at one of the 21 restaurants on-property, and then dance the night away at Aura nightclub.

1 Day: Mail Boat Passage

On Day 2, head downtown and take in the history, architecture, culture, and (most important of all) the food of historic Nassau on the Bites of Nassau Food Tour. With your belly full, head to the eastern side of Potter’s Cay Dock to the Grand Master mail boat (242/393–1041) . Once you get your tickets (no need to book in advance), head over to the colorful stalls to enjoy a game of dominoes and an ice cold Sands or Kalik beer. The mail boat, which leaves port between 4 and 5:30 every Tuesday afternoon, will be your transportation, overnight accommodations, and dinner restaurant on your way to George Town, Exuma, all for less than $60 per person one-way. Don’t expect anything fancy; you'll get only a basic bunk in one of two small and stark–-but air-conditioned–-cabins. For dinner it’s a plate full of the same hearty meal enjoyed by the crew.

1 Day: George Town, Exuma

Following your 14-hour overnight passage—complete with unbelievable sunsets, a strong possibility of dolphin spotting, and space shared with everything from cars to mail to sheep and goats—you'll arrive in George Town bright and early. Make Club Peace and Plenty your first stop for a Bahamian breakfast staple: boiled fish and johnny cake. Drop your bags at your prebooked accommodations, and take the water taxi from the Government Dock for a day of sun and fun at Chat 'N' Chill on Stocking Island, just a mile offshore. Swim with some wild stingrays that pop in daily for lunch, and treat yourself to tropical libations and conch salad prepared right before your eyes. When you’re done chatting and chilling, head back over to the mainland for a restful night, as there’s not likely to be much going on outside of Fish Fry Friday or the annual Regatta.

1 Day: Exuma Cays

The next day, island-hop the stunning Exuma Cays on a half-day excursion with Four C’s Adventures. Skim through the azure, crystal clear waters from island to island, feeding iguanas on Allan’s Cay, petting the swimming pigs on Big Major Cay, taking the perfect selfie at one of the beautiful beaches, and snorkeling in ocean blue holes. Catch the last scheduled flight back to Nassau, where you'll spend another night.

1 Day: Rose Island

Just 8 miles off the eastern coast of New Providence lies Rose Island. A popular weekend boating drop for locals, the long island is uninhabited. Book a night at the new Sandy Toes Retreat ( 363–8637 www.sandytoesroseisland.com ; starting at $795 a night), a beautifully appointed two-bedroom cottage with unbelievable ocean views. Your boat transportation is included, and once the excursion day-trippers leave at 3:45, you’ll have the island to yourself.

Catch the 20-minute boat ride back to Nassau, and head west to wrap up your island-hopping week with a luxurious massage on the Sandals resort private island. A day pass gives you access to an array of restaurants, unlimited beverages, and all the amenities, including a private offshore island where you can be pampered in a tiki hut as the waves break on the northern shore, explore the three beaches, or lounge in the pool, and either head home late in the afternoon or early evening or spend one final night on New Providence.

How to Spend 7 Days Island Hopping Around the Bahamas

The shallow waters of the sun-baked Bahamas are lined with wreck dives and coral reefs, with up to 60m (197ft) visibility for an underwater window onto vibrant marine life. Comprising 365 islands and cays, with anchorages from one to seven hours apart, the archipelago offers a true castaway experience, especially when visited by boat. Here we reveal how to spend seven days island hopping around this paradisiacal archipelago, so you can soak up all of its beauty.

Day 1 – Start at Palm Cay Marina, Nassau

Architectural Landmark

Join the boat at Palm Cay Marina in Nassau, the Bahamas’ capital city. Settle in on board, before stepping nextdoor to Ocean Club, an 18-hole par 72 championship golf course located on Atlantis, Paradise Island’s ocean-side peninsula. Popular Cabbage Beach and Paradise Beach edge the fairways. In the afternoon, make the short hop across to Lucayan National Park on Grand Bahama, which has one of the largest underwater networks of caves in the world. The park carries a small entrance fee, and a permit is required to dive in the caves, but the nature trails and boardwalks that run through its six ecosystems are a must-see.

Day 2 – Set sail for Warderick Wells Cay

Natural Feature

Set sail today for Warderick Wells Cay, the headquarters of the famed Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park – a 35mi-long (56km) nature sanctuary made up of cays, islets and beaches. On entering the 40-acre (16ha) National Park, note the skeleton of a 15m (49ft) sperm whale, which died from plastic consumption, and is displayed to remind visitors to act responsibly at sea. Designated moorings are found on the north side of the island. Drop anchor and take the tender to visit the island’s stromatolites. Warderick Wells Cay is one of only a handful of islands where these living rock-like organisms can be found. Dating back hundreds of years, they’re one of the rarest life forms in existence.

Day 3 – Staniel Cay

Natural Feature Enjoy a hearty Bahamian breakfast of “fire engine” (corned beef) and grits while cruising across to Staniel Cay. Its deeper waters are favored by larger boats, and present great kayaking and fishing opportunities. Don a wetsuit and step into James Bond’s shoes for the morning by diving Thunderball Grotto, where the eponymous spy movie was filmed. This incredible underwater cave system is free for visitors to swim, dive and wade through. It’s alive with marine life, including yellow-tail snappers, angelfish and stingrays, though wait for low tide to experience the best snorkeling action. When back on board, head to nearby uninhabited Big Major Cay to swim with wild pigs on Pig Beach. These furry creatures have become accustomed to visitors, so expect them to swim up to the boat to greet you on arrival. Enjoy a dinner of steamed lobster with drawn butter at the Staniel Cay Yacht Club. It’s the hub of the Exumas social scene, so reservations are essential.

Day 4 – Compass Cay

Rise early this morning for a quick 20-minute cruise to spend an hour on neighboring Bitter Guana Cay, known by locals as Iguana Island for its protected population of rock iguanas. Then head north to Little Bells Cay, also known as Cambridge Cay, which lies in the center of the Exumas Land & Sea Park. This secluded anchorage provides good access to beaches and hiking, as well as a safe harbor to avoid any bad weather. Then it’s just a short hop across Conch Cut to Compass Cay, whose marina is one of the few protected harbors in the Exumas. It carries an overnight dockage fee, plus a per-person landing fee. Here you can swim with 4m (13ft) nurse sharks that live in the shallow waters. Alternatively, head for a soak in Rachel’s Bubble Bath, a lagoon on the north side of the island fed by water from the sound that breaks over lava rocks and forms froth and bubbles on the surface.

Day 5 – Shroud Cay

Shroud Cay is a tiny island loved by the yachting fraternity for its natural beauty. It’s carpeted in mangrove and home to sea turtles, conch and native birds. Stop off en route for a swim in the gin-clear waters of Hawksbill Cay – you’ll no doubt be the only boat in the area – before mooring up at Shroud Cay. Water babies should swim in the Washing Machine, where zipping currents that run around a small beach peninsula carry you from one side to the other, or dive the notorious 1980s plane wreck. Landlubbers can hike to Camp Driftwood, a scenic lookout at the peak of the cay, or paddleboard through the mangroves. There are virtually no amenities on the island, so take provisions for a beach barbecue and enjoy the glowing sunset, which is extra golden on the west side of the cay.

Day 6 – Highbourne Cay

For your second-to-last day, make for Highbourne Cay. You’ll Pass Norman’s Cay en route, a fishing highlight where mahi-mahi and yellowfin tuna live in abundance. This area of the Exumas is also excellent for diving. If time allows, seek out the underwater wreck of an old DC-3 airplane. But don’t miss Norman’s Cay Beach Club, which serves outrageously good curry conch chowder accompanied by an assortment of rum cocktails. Kick back and digest on Pipe Creek Sandbar, a long stretch of white sand with nothing else around, or make straight for Highbourne Cay. Directly off the cay is a drop-off that faces the Exuma Sound, a 22m (72ft) vertical wall of coral, and another diving hot spot. Dock for the night at Highbourne Cay Marina – berth space here is never an issue. Then head for sundowners at Xuma Beach Bar. Its waterfront position is a dreamy way to spend the night.

Day 7 – Return to Palm Cay Marina, Nassau

Before turning to Palm Cay Marina, sail further north to Harbour Island, adored for its laid-back charm, sailing community and yawning pink-sand beaches that stretch across the east side of the island. Take a tour around Dunmore Town’s pastel-colored houses, then jump back on board and make for Blue Lagoon for a final spectacular dive. If you have an evening flight, take the opportunity to explore Nassau. The Cloisters are an intriguing collection of stonework dating back to the 14th century, while the Bamboo Shack serves up a mouthwatering plate of cracked conch with a glass of champagne.

On my first visit to The Bahamas, I fell in love with its postcard-perfect white sand beaches and blue waters — both literally inviting travelers to dip their toes in the sand and sea. Since then, I’ve visited multiple times by air and on cruises with friends, family, and most recently on a skip-generational vacation with my grandson.

Do you want to lay on its famous beaches or splash around doing water sports such as snorkeling, diving or parasailing? Maybe you’re a nature lover and prefer to take to its trails or visit its marine habitat, wildlife reserves, or national parks. Or perhaps you’d prefer to step back in time with a cultural walking tour, pose for pictures with its famous swimming pigs or indulge in a few days of fun and pampering at Atlantis Resort , The Bahamas’ most famous place to stay.

Yes! You can do all of that and more in The Bahamas. With so many Bahamian islands and so little time, I still have more to discover and share with my family.

Which Bahamas Islands Should I Visit

Nassau, bahamas.

New Providence Island, home to the capital city Nassau , is the most visited of all the Bahamas islands. It offers endless opportunities for attractions and entertainment for families. More than 70% of the country’s people live in Nassau; it is the liveliest of the Bahamas islands.

Just 179 miles southeast of Florida, Nassau is a popular cruise line port as well.

Explore Nassau on your own, or hire local tour operators for a downtown tour of Nassau, walking tours or day trips.

Paradise Island, Bahamas

Paradise Island is across the harbor from Nassau. It’s the home of the famous Atlantis Paradise Island Resort . We recommend spending at least a few nights of your Bahamas vacation at this luxury resort destination.

At Atlantis, you’ll find the thrilling Aquaventure waterpark. Home of The Current, an exhilarating river that is the opposite of lazy, with waves to ride and rapids to run. Or you can take the laid-back route and spend time on the miles of white sand beaches or chill at one of the many resort pools.

Or you can visit one of the many marine exhibits showcasing habitats such as lagoons, caves, coral formations and more.

Freeport, Bahamas

The second-largest Bahamian city is Freeport , located on Grand Bahama Island. This is the place to find upscale resorts, cultural and historical sites, 18 of the 28 species of native birds, and a delightful mix of local and international cuisine.

Make time to visit the island’s waterfront hub, Port Lucaya Marketplace. You’ll find lovely boutiques selling local Bohemian handmade goods, fine dining, and open-air entertainment in the colorful Count Basie Square.

This island is also home to a national treasure, Lucayan National Park , the second most visited park in The Bahamas. Known for its underwater cave system, it is also home to preserved remains of the Lucayan Indians, and a prime combination of natural environments including pine forests, mangroves creeks, and coral reefs. This national park is the place to discover the world-famous Gold Rock Beach.

Worth noting is that Grand Bahama Island was one of the hardest-hit islands when Hurricane Dorian made landfall in 2019. The bulk of the damage happened on the eastern and northern parts of Grand Bahama and recovery continues today. Freeport was spared the worst of the damage.

Bahamas Out Islands

While Nassau and Freeport are amazing, island hopping is also popular and affordable. These islands offer nature lovers seeking a quieter and more authentic Bahamian experience a peek at the 29 lesser populated islands and hundreds of cays.

The Bahamas Out Islands consist of (to name a few) Bimini, Pink Sands Beach, Harbour Island , Thunderball Grotto, Exumas, Dean’s Blue Hole, Long Island, Lighthouse Beach, Eleuthera, The Hermitage, and Cat Island. This travel guide is an excellent overview of these islands, their amenities, and things to do.

Cruise Lines’ Private Islands

Many of the cruise lines own or lease private islands in The Bahamas. These private islands offer a wide range of activities including snorkeling, fishing, swimming, sunbathing, waterslides and water parks, restaurants, and more, all reserved for the exclusive use of that cruise line’s passengers.

Coco Cay (pronounced co-co-key) is where you’ll find Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay private island. After a $250 million upgrade in 2019, the island has the Thrill Waterpark (home to the 135-foot-tall Daredevil’s Peak, which Royal Caribbean says is North America’s tallest water slide), an air balloon ride, a huge pool and a gorgeous upscale section. The private island is also used by Celebrity cruise ships.

Located on more than 40 acres, Carnival Cruise Line owns Princess Cays at the southern end of the island of Eleuthera and the nearby Half Moon Cay on Little San Salvador Island in The Bahamas.

Disney’s Private Island

Located near Great Abaco Island, the private island of Castaway Cay is an exclusive port for Disney Cruise ships. It’s always a fun stop for families. This 1,000-acre island was originally named Gorda Cay and is the scene for several popular movies including Splash  and  Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.

When I sailed the Disney Dream several years ago with my daughter and teen and toddler granddaughters, Castaway Cay was our favorite excursion because there’s so much to do for all ages. While my teen granddaughter chilled on a beach chair, my daughter and I walked to the beach for my toddler granddaughter’s first ocean experience. She was hesitant at first but loved the cool turquoise ocean waters.

What is The Bahamas Weather Like?

Due to its tropical weather, The Bahamas is a year-round destination, with average temperatures between 75°F and 84°F (24°C-29°C) in both winter and summer. Early morning and night temps might warrant a light jacket. Summer is typically humid with hot sun. Don’t forget the sunscreen!

Rain is more common in the summer and fall seasons. During the summer, consider indoor activities or shaded day trips to avoid the hot mid-afternoon sun.

When is the Best Time to Visit The Bahamas?

High season with higher rates is typically from mid-December to mid-April, when travelers book to escape the winter snows. If that’s your plan, book at least 3 months in advance for the best rates; Christmas and February might need more lead time.

The best deals in The Bahamas are available from mid-April to mid-December when the trade winds offer cool breezes.

When is The Bahamas Hurricane Season?

Hurricane season officially starts in June and lasts through November. But hurricanes rarely land in The Bahamas.

If you are traveling during hurricane season, travel insurance is highly recommended, although many Bahamian hotels also offer a Hurricane Cancellation Policy. (Please confirm with your desired hotel prior to booking.)

Is It Safe to Take My Family to The Bahamas?

As I said, I have visited The Bahamas multiple times with and without my family. I’ve never felt unsafe, and in fact, the locals have been nothing but kind and friendly.

However, as with any visit to foreign countries, travelers should always remain cautious and aware of their surroundings. Straying too far from tourist areas alone is rarely safe, especially late at night, no matter where you are.

Best Bahamas Resorts for Families

As a top tourist beach vacation destination, Freeport, Nassau, and Paradise Island offer every hotel chain imaginable.

Look for hotels that provide amenities for families such as free breakfast, suites, pools with a lifeguard, onsite restaurants, onsite activities for children (kids’ programs or crafts), or at the least, easy access to the surrounding area.

Atlantis Resort Paradise Island

Located on Paradise Island is the oceanside Atlantis Resort.  If your family is into adventures, get ready to explore all the outdoor and indoor fun within Atlantis’ acres and acres…and acres of property.

We have a whole post on all the family-friendly fun things to do at Atlantis Paradise Island and tips for getting the most out of a visit . Here, I’ll just highlight some of my family favorites: Aquaventure water park, pools, beaches, extensive marine habitats, golf course and Atlantis Casino .

Staying at the Atlantis Paradise Island Resort is a luxury resort and it comes at a luxury price. But my family has always thought it was worth every penny.

Comfort Suites Paradise Island

I stayed at the Comfort Suites Paradise Island on my most recent visit with my grandson, and I was pleasantly surprised. Although it’s not “fancy,” it checks all the boxes for family-friendly and affordable. My grandson loved chilling at the pool, and since the resort is tiny compared to Atlantis, I felt safe allowing him to venture to the pool alone for a short time.

Breakfast is included, and the pool-side restaurant serves delicious food.

Grand Hyatt Baha Mar Nassau

My grandson and I also stayed at the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar, part of a 1,000-acre resort complex. The Grand Hyatt Baha Mar offers impressive luxury, but for my grandson, the pools, the flamingos, and the pool featuring Dean’s Blue Hole were the highlights. He and another teen boy discovered this pool with its 8-foot and 15-foot waterfalls, stone gardens and a secluded grotto with a view of sea turtles and sharks.

This luxury resort is located on Nassau’s stunning Cable Beach. From the rooms to the dining, the service was impeccable at the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar.  Just wow!

Freeport Family Friendly Hotels

I’m not as familiar with Freeport, but several of my friends recommended family-friendly Pelican Bay Hotel and Grand Lucayan , Bahamas.

Bahamas All-Inclusive Resorts

In Nassau, just across the bridge from Paradise Island and Atlantis, is the all-inclusive Melia Nassau Beach overlooking Cable Beach. This property, currently under renovation, offers a prime beachfront location just a few minutes from the city center, shops, restaurants, nightspots, museums and Lynden Pindling International Airport.

An all-inclusive option in Freeport is the Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach , located on the southern shore of Grand Bahama Island. It includes a kids’ club among other all-inclusive amenities.

For an intimate, totally all-inclusive island getaway with a laid-back vibe, there’s  Small Hope Bay Lodge on Andros Island. One of our favorite all-inclusive resorts, Small Hope Bay features 17 oceanfront cabins and down-home hospitality. Think of it as your personal resort with a fresh hot breakfast, and homemade lunch and dinner buffets.

Getting to The Bahamas

Spread across more than 500 miles and 700 islands, the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, as the islands are officially named, is often referred to as a Caribbean Island. But the islands actually are located in the North Atlantic Ocean, just over 110 miles from southeast Florida.

With more than 40 non-stop flights from South Florida and less than a three-hour ferry ride from Fort Lauderdale, getting to The Bahamas for a family beach vacation is super easy and very quick.

Do I Need a Passport to Go to The Bahamas?

U.S. citizens are required to present a valid U.S. passport when traveling to The Bahamas. You will also be asked your anticipated date of departure from The Bahamas.

Those cruising to The Bahamas may use a Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) compliant document.

Bahamas Airports

Most travelers arrive in The Bahamas through Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau. A newer terminal services only U.S. flights. There is another terminal for domestic flights to the Out Islands and international flights from Canada, England, and other parts of the Caribbean.

Grand Bahama International Airport offers direct flights from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta, and Nassau.

Leonard M. Thompson International Airport (formerly Marsh Harbour) in the Abaco Islands has daily flights from Nassau, perfect for island hopping. Several more Bahamas islands also offer island-hopping flights.

Cruising The Bahamas

The Bahamas are popular ports for cruise ship passengers. Cruise ship passengers comprise the largest percentage of day visitors to the islands each year.

In addition to stops at their private islands, Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian, and Disney Cruise Line arrive weekly at Nassau and Freeport.

Getting Around The Bahamas

The Bahamas were a British colony and remain part of the Commonwealth. That means cars drive on the left side of the road. Even though the country is pedestrian-friendly, and most drivers yield, be extra cautious and look multiple times so as not to step into traffic.

Transportation options include walking, taxis (only use official taxes marked by yellow license plates), renting a car, and smaller islands offer golf carts.

Finding all the things to do in The Bahamas with kids is quite the feat as there truly is so much to do and see, depending on your island of choice. Find below my suggestions, but I haven’t even begun to skim the surface of things to do.

Fun Things to Do in Historic Downtown Nassau

Pirates of Nassau

Arrrrgh, matey! Are your kids intrigued by all things pirate? Then don’t miss a visit to the  Pirates of Nassau Interactive Museum , located in the heart of Olde Towne Nassau.

Mixing history with entertainment, begin your pirate adventure on a moonlit dock with the sounds of the lapping ocean and pirates singing nearby.

End your pirate adventure with a Blackbeard’s Revenge Pirate Cruise . Pirate cruises are campy fun for the whole family. There’s a kid-friendly daytime cruise and a dinner cruise with surprisingly good food.

Parliament Square

Rich in history and dating back to the late 1700s and early 1800s, the pink buildings of Parliament Square are a frequent stop for visitors in old Nassau. This unique Colonial-influenced architecture includes the House of Assembly, the Senate Building, and the Supreme Court of The Bahamas.

There is also a statue of Queen Elizabeth in the square.

Queen’s Staircase

Put on your walking shoes and climb the 66 steps of the Queen’s Staircase, named to honor Queen Victoria. Located on top of Elizabeth Avenue, this staircase was hewn out of limestone rock by slaves in 1793-1794.

When the humidity is at its highest, this staircase is a cool reprieve from the heat. The walkway is lined with palm and native trees. Then at the top, enjoy local shopping stalls and souvenirs.

Historic Forts of Nassau

Forts are a natural defense on an island with pirates and potential invasion as a constant threat.

History buffs will enjoy exploring Nassau with several forts including Fort Montagu on the eastern edge of downtown; Fort Fincastle, at the top of the Queen’s Staircase; and Fort Charlotte, farther west as the largest and most impressive fort, overlooking Paradise Island.

Distillery: Yo Ho Ho (And a Bottle of Rum)

Discover the “Spirit of the Bahamas” with a tour in historic downtown Nassau of the John Wattling’s Distillery. When in the Bahamas, of course, you must tour a rum distillery, right?

See how Bahamian Rum is hand-made and bottled and get a free sample of a pina colada.

Straw Market

Go shopping at the world-famous Straw Market.

Smack dab in the middle of Nassau’s high-end boutique shops, discover handmade Bahamian crafts, gifts, and souvenirs from straw hats to conch jewelry and hand-carved wood. The prices are reasonable, but haggling is expected. So bring your negotiating skills!

National Parks in The Bahamas

Since 2002, the National Park System of the Bahamas has doubled in size to reach 32 parks covering two million acres spread out across all The Bahamas islands.

Have you heard of The Bahamas’ delightful swimming pigs? A colony of wild pigs live on Big Major Cay Island and happily “pose for pictures.”

Pink Sands Beaches Bahamas

The 3-mile stretch of pink sand on Harbour Island gets its color from crushed shells.

Bahamian Food

Bahamian cuisine includes seafood such as fish, shellfish, lobster, crab, and conch, as well as tropical fruits, rice, peas, pork and pigeon peas (a sweeter version of green peas). Be sure to order fresh seafood, especially the local favorites: conch (any way you like), fried fish, and a Bahama Mama cocktail (a sweet rum drink with coconut flavoring).

The best place for tasting local Bahamian cuisine is Arawak Cay, a beachfront entertainment area just a short walk from Nassau Harbor, popular with locals and tourists alike.

Known to the locals as the “Fish Fry,” it began as beachfront shacks but has blossomed into a lively waterfront, home to many restaurants, bars, and outdoor eateries. Popular for lunch and dinner, it’s the place to sample local seafood, such as conch fritters and conch salad, grilled lobster tails and spicy grilled shrimp.

Sip local cocktails or the local beer, Kalik, or refreshing non-alcoholic coconut water. This is also home to an authentic Bahamian Fish Fry, made to order by vendors. You’ll also enjoy traditional junkanoo music and street performers.

Warm and Friendly Bahamas People

I say this often to my friends: Bahamians are truly warm, welcoming and friendly.

An excellent example of this is when my grandson and I stayed on Paradise Island and explored Marina Village. We dined at Frankie Gone Bananas and the local Bahamian server took a liking to my grandson. She gave him extra special attention, lots of laughs, and a big hug at the end of the night.

We also enjoyed a junkanoo parade that same evening, and the musicians selected my grandson out of the crowd to play an instrument and walk with them.

These are just two of many examples of friendly locals.

What is the Bahamas Currency?

U.S. dollars and Bahamian dollars are equal in value. US dollars are accepted in The Bahamas. If you want to exchange your money, do it before you get to The Bahamas for the best rate.

I’d definitely recommend traveling with cash and a major credit card. Taxis are cash-only, but some hotel bars and snack spots only accept cards or room charges. If you pay with US dollars, don’t be surprised to get your change in Bahamian dollars.

In tourist areas, if someone helps you out – guides you to your location, takes your picture for you, etc. – tips are expected.

What Language is Spoken in The Bahamas?

British English is the official language of The Bahamas and is spoken on virtually every island.

However, Bahamians also have their own tantalizing Creole dialect with accents, words and phrases influenced by their personal culture and heritage.

Bahamas History

The Bahamas, a former British colony, gained its independence in 1973. It’s now a member of the Commonwealth and its official name is the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.

The Lucayan people were the original inhabitants of the island. Christopher Columbus famously landed in the Americas. He then infamously, tragically, and strategically annihilated those peaceful inhabitants.

Historically, The Bahamas remained a European-dominated settlement, marked by slave trade and piracy.

Today, the country is a blend of European and African heritage, and due to its perfect climate and picturesque beaches, The Bahamas relies heavily on tourism.

Bahamas on a Budget: A 5 Day Itinerary

Tips for traveling the Bahamas on a budget:

• Travel during the off-season.  We visited in November and it did not seem that busy.  There were also a lot of flight deals around this time (we scored flights for $500 CAD each, coming from Victoria, BC) and the hotels were not too busy (we were upgraded to oceanfront rooms at no extra cost at both of our hotels).
• Stick to one island.   Our flight deal was to Nassau but we were interested in visiting some of the outer islands as well.  However, flights between islands are not that cheap (about $200 round trip).  If you have the time, you can opt for the ferries (check prices here ), but they still are not super cheap.
• Eat where the locals eat and not at the hotel.   We were a little shocked at how expensive food was at restaurants so we made a point of eating at the local spots as much as possible.  Plus, the local cuisine is delicious and it is fun to try new things!
• Stay at a variety of accommodations.  If you want a taste of luxury but don’t want to break the bank, consider splurging on just 2 nights in a resort and the rest at an Airbnb.  It’s nice to get a taste of both worlds.
• Resist the urge to do all the insta-worthy activities.  The internet is full of photos of vacationers posing with swimming pigs, swimming with sharks and manta rays, etc.  Sure, it makes for stunning photos and special memories, but also comes at a stunning price.
• Take the bus and walk a lot.   We tried to avoid taking taxis and instead took the local bus and walked a lot!  The fare is only $1.25 per trip, cash only.

5 Day Itinerary to Experience Bahamas on a Budget

As mentioned above, our flight deal was to Nassau so we stuck to New Providence Island and Paradise Island to save on additional transportation costs.  Our 5 day itinerary below allowed us to experience the Bahamas on a budget, while still allowing us a taste of luxury in addition to local life.  The perfect combo if you ask us! (Note that the term “budget” in the Bahamas is still a lot more expensive than other countries, as everything in the Bahamas is just generally more expensive!)

Hang out at Junkanoo Beach

Junkanoo Beach is located in downtown Nassau, right across from the hotel we stayed at, the Courtyard by Marriott Nassau Downtown/Junkanoo Beach.  It is not the most stunning beach, but it was a fun place to hang out right across from the hotel.

The beach can get crowded during the day with all the cruise ship tourists, but they mostly leave by 4pm.  There are a ton of beach huts serving up local food and lots of alcohol, just be sure to check prices before ordering as we noticed some were more expensive than others.

We loved just hanging out on the beach, people-watching, while eating our local food and listening to the hip hop music playing from the speakers at all the beach huts.

Eat dinner at a beach hut

There are a number of beach huts to choose from but we went with Crabs & Tings as the food looked the most appealing.

Take a ride on the water taxi

After you’ve had enough beach time, stroll down Bay Street to the heart of downtown Nassau.  Head towards the waterfront and you will find the water taxi in front of Sharkeez .  A ride costs $4/person one way .  They only take cash and it is best to have the exact amount as they can be reluctant to give change.

Explore Atlantis (for free!)

The gigantic Atlantis resort is home to endless paths and underground tunnels that you can explore and gaze at all the marine life.  Normally you need to pay an entrance fee to access the marine habitat, but if you enter past 6pm there are no guards and you can wander throughout for free!

It is a different and magical experience to wander about at night.  Some of the tunnels can be a little dark and creepy, especially when it is so quiet, but it is pretty neat to feel like you have the place all to yourself!

Once you are done exploring, you will have to catch a taxi back to your hotel as the water taxis no longer run at night.  You can catch a taxi from the lobby where there are posted rates for locations around the island.  We paid about $10 for a taxi back to our hotel in downtown.

Where to Stay: Courtyard by Marriott Nassau Downtown/Junkanoo Beach

We liked this hotel due to it being beachfront and it was a quick walk into town.  It is clean, modern and had 2 very nice pools.

Breakfast at Imperial Takeaway

Skip the hotel breakfast and walk over to Imperial Takeaway instead.  It’s a hole in the wall restaurant but since you are in the Bahamas on a budget, this is just what you are looking for!

Check out downtown and Parliament Square

After breakfast, wander the streets of downtown and check out all the pretty pastel buildings.  It gets very busy with cruise ship tourists, so make sure to get off the main streets to enjoy the scenery a bit more.

Hike up the Queens Staircase

It’s not too far of a walk to get to the popular Queens Staircase.  Skip the cab and just walk up Elisabeth Ave , towards the white water tower .  You will pass the hospital on your left and then see a parking lot on the right.  There is a staircase in the parking lot, but this is NOT the Queen’s staircase 😉  Instead, you will find it to the left of the parking lot.  Enter into the treed area.

Lunch at Junkanoo Beach

After wandering around downtown you might want to rest your feet on the beach and enjoy the breeze under a palm tree.  Head back to Junkanoo Beach and enjoy a meal from another food hut.

Dinner at Arawak Cay

Everyone will tell you to check out the fish fry at Arawak Cay. It is a happening place filled with tourists and locals alike.  If you follow the lights and music to the left, you will find restaurant after restaurant serving up the same type of seafood fare.  Looking at the menus the prices actually weren’t as cheap as we were expecting.

We then wandered to the opposite end of Arawak Cay, to the right of the entrance .  Here you will find it is less busy and less touristy, and mostly locals instead.

You’ve got to try the Sky Juice !  It consists of gin, coconut water and sweetened condensed milk and is so delicious!  Sounds like a weird combo but is so good!  I got mine without the gin as I was pregnant at the time.

For dinner, try the ribs !  I know it’s a fish fry, but the ribs are absolutely delicious and cheap!  Ryan and I split one order as it came with a full rack of ribs and sides.

Tip: If you need to use the restroom, they are located by the entrance and exit.  Also, if you need to take out cash, there is an ATM halfway between the restrooms, on the road side, opposite of the restaurants.

Where to stay: Airbnb

To save on hotel costs, try an Airbnb instead!  We loved the Airbnb we stayed at.  Our hosts, Kendra and Edgardo, were super kind and helpful.  They gave us lots of local tips, like where to eat and how to take the bus.  They even offered to pick us up from our hotel downtown and took us to the grocery store!

Tip: When in the Bahamas on a budget, stock up on some groceries for breakfast and snacks (or even lunch and dinner) to save money!  Also, buy large bottles of water and transfer to smaller bottles to take around with you to save on buying bottled water when you are out and about.

Their home is very clean, comfortable and had everything we needed.  It was complete with a kitchenette, large bathroom, wi-fi and the TV even had Netflix .  They even lent us a cell phone to use during our stay, loaded with minutes and data.  We were able to text them if we needed help or directions – such a bonus to have!

Best of all, it was easy to walk to and from Arawak Cay , and also close to the bus route along Bay Street.  There was also a gas station (Rubis) nearby where we could pick up late night snacks.

The area felt very safe and we were comfortable walking late at night.

Breakfast at Louis and Steen

Catch the #10 bus from Bay Street , which is less than a 10 minute walk from the Airbnb.  The bus stop is located right in front of the hardware shop.

Note: Buses don’t run on a prompt schedule, so be prepared to wait around for up to half an hour.  If you would like to know the routes of the buses, check the official listings here .

Louis & Steen is a New Orleans-inspired coffee shop , right across from the beach.  They have really nice seating areas outside where you can relax and stare out at the beautiful ocean view.

Relax at Love Beach

The best thing about going to the beach in the Bahamas on a budget is it is free!  Love Beach was our favorite beach that we went to.  It was not very busy at all and was absolutely gorgeous.

Pack some snacks and lots of water and enjoy a perfect afternoon on this white sand beach.  There is also a beach bar there if you get hungry or thirsty.

Try the best conch salad at Dino’s

After you’ve had enough of the beach, walk back up to Dino’s Tropical Conch Shack .  This is one of the best conch shacks on the island, in our opinion!  And the locals we met there agreed.

Tip: If you need to use the restroom, there is one in the back, behind the restaurant.

Try some more street food

Across the street from Dino’s are some more food shacks.  We couldn’t resist the conch fritters (6 for only $3) !  They are served with a yummy dipping sauce.  Try a side of mac and cheese as well (a personal favorite of mine).

Day 4 & 5

Check into atlantis (early).

The massive Atlantis resort is not a budget place to stay, but if you are in the Bahamas on a budget and have FOMO, the good news is you can still stay there without breaking the bank!

There are many different towers at the Atlantis, each with different draws and price ranges.  The cheapest is the Beach Tower as it is the furthest from all the action and the oldest.  Even though it was older and further, we didn’t mind.  I mean, how much time are you really going to spend inside the room when there is so much to do outside of it?!

The cost worked out to an average of $140/night – a lot cheaper than we expected when we thought of the Atlantis!  However, it is important to note that you must stay a minimum of 2 nights and the cost quoted when booking is NOT the full cost.  You need to remember that you will also get charged a $49.95 resort fee per night plus taxes and gratuity .  So it worked out to a little over $200/night – still a good deal for what you get.  I mean, look at the view we got below!

Also, if you consider that a day pass to Aquaventure is $157/each (!!!) for non-hotel guests, the cost of the room pays for itself as you get free entry!

Note: If you choose to stay at the Comfort Suites Paradise Island next door you also get free entry as it is a partner hotel.

Check in doesn’t start until 4:00pm but head there early anyway.   We arrived at 10am and our room was already available!  This allowed us to have almost a full extra day in the water park!

Each day you can obtain the daily hotel newsletter, The Atlantean , from the lobby.  It is very useful to get a full overview of everything that is going on that day at the resort.  It gives helpful information such as:

• sunrise and sunset times
• free children’s activities
• which restaurants are open that day
• which complimentary movies are playing in the theatre

Enjoy Aquaventure!

Once you’ve checked into the hotel you can head to the water park!  There are security guards at all of the entrances so you will need to show your room key to gain entry .  Then, proceed to any towel hut to get your wristband .  You will need to show your wristband to go on the water slides.

There is so much to do and see!  Our favorite experience was the Rapids River – so much fun!  Much more exciting than the Lazy River , which is located by the Beach Tower.

Tip: Avoid bringing too much into the water park.  You only really need your towel, sandals, sunglasses, room key and wristband.  Lockers are expensive to rent so we just left our towels and sandals on our beach chairs while on the rides/slides.  We took our waterproof phones with us and our room key.  You can charge food and drinks to your room so no need to bring your wallet.

My favorite water slide was The Drop , as you drop down a pitch black tunnel – quite exciting!  We also loved the Serpent Slide and seeing all the sharks around us.  But really, all the slides were super fun!

Grab a casual dinner

You will want to avoid most of the restaurants in the hotel when you are in the Bahamas on a budget.  They are quite pricey!  As in, $20+ appetizers, $40+ mains and $12+ desserts.

One of the most affordable options we found was the The Village Burger Shack .  It is located at the end of the Marina Village and is open from 11am-11pm. This place reminded me of a cross between Johnny Rockets and Shake Shack.

For dessert, you can head to Ben & Jerry’s in the Marina Village as well.

Play the penny slots

Being in the Bahamas on a budget probably means you won’t be gambling away the big bucks.  But you can still have a little fun in the Atlantis casino by playing the penny slots.  I sat down with $5 and managed to win $30!

Fill up at the breakfast buffet

Poseidon’s Table , located in The Royal tower , serves up a bountiful breakfast buffet each morning from 7am-12pm.  At $36.75/person it is not cheap, but you can definitely fill yourself up enough for breakfast and lunch and then just have a light dinner later.

Explore the beautiful Versailles Garden

The Versailles Garden is located a short walk away from the resort.  It is free to enter and is a beautiful place to explore!

Try the food trucks

Another budget tip is to dine outside the resort at the food trucks!  Your best bet is to head towards the employee parking lot around lunch time/early afternoon.  You can find them behind the Scotia Bank in the Paradise Shopping Plaza , which is across the road from the Marina Village.

The Best Time to Visit Nassau, Bahamas

The best time to visit Nassau is between November and April, although that is the peak season when costs will be higher. The hurricane season runs between June and November.

What to Know Before You Go

I’d highly recommend splitting your time between Nassau and one of the outer islands, like Green Turtle Cay , where the pace of life is completely different.

Nassau has more in common with the US than any other Caribbean island I’ve visited and you can expect plenty of stag and hen/ bachelor and bachelorette parties at certain hotels and venues.

Nassau and the Bahamas: Background

The earliest known inhabitants of today’s Bahamas were the Lucayans, an Arawakan-speaking people with links to South America and the neighbouring Caribbean Islands.

However, written and recorded history begins with the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492, who named the islands San Salvador, before heading further west on his first “voyage of discovery.” 

By 1648, the first European settlement began and by the 18th century, the notorious triangular slave trade was in full flow: kidnapping people from western Africa and forcing them to work on the land in the Bahamas. 

The Pirate Republic

The history books show plenty of struggles between the various European governments at the time – at one point, they all gave up and stepped away. This ushered in the era of pirates and privateers, a Blackbeard reality tougher than the movies make out. 

While Britain lost the American War of Independence, it somehow gained the Bahamas in the process and a group of loyalists to the American-British cause set up a new settlement in New Plymouth in the Abacos. You can still visit today and feel as though you’re in a slice of Caribbean New England.

Elsewhere, the historic architecture is predominantly Victorian British, while the modern malls and gas stations have an All-American vibe. 

But the Bahamas have their own identity, of course. And you can step on and off the standard tourist trails and start to uncover the depth behind the Bahamas with these secret things to do in Nassau.

Where to Stay in Nassau: Baha Mar

Baha Mar i s a vast complex of three hotels in one. And, truthfully, as a lover of  boutique hideaways, I probably wouldn’t have chosen it myself.

However, the place won me over with its rich cultural touches, like the art gallery and hidden walkways in the gardens. If you’re looking for loud casinos and rows of sun-loungers, you can find those too. But you’ll also find an understated elegance and an astonishing array of excellent restaurants and bars all in one place.

Staying at Baha Mar makes life easy when it comes to airport transfers and dining and so it’s perfect for travel with young children. Once checked in and freshened up, you can always leave the resort to find the secret things to do in Nassau.

Secret Things to do in Nassau, Bahamas

Your 3 day nassau itinerary.

I’ve designed this Nassau itinerary to form part of a week long trip, with half your time in Nassau and the other half elsewhere in the Bahamas. 

If you’re visiting Nassau from a cruise ship, pick one day from this itinerary, unless you have more time on shore. 

Day One – Arrive in Nassau

Most international flights arrive in Nassau Lynden Pindling International Airport. If staying at the Grand Hyatt at Baha Mar, there will be a seamless transfer waiting for you (and possibly a singing pirate.) If not, arrange transport to your hotel or vacation rental.

Alternatively, if you’re wondering what to do in Nassau on your cruise, then focus on day two of this itinerary as that’s likely all you’ll have time for. Most cruises disembark onto Bay Street near the Straw market if that helps you to plan your route.

Day Two – Rum, Crafts & History

If staying at Baha Mar, today’s the today to soak up the faux-French beauty of Café Madeleine, with fresh croissants and hot coffee for breakfast.

Then, to explore Nassau, it helps to have a driver but you can take individual taxis or book yourself onto a tour or excursion. 

I’ve given a rough overview of times but these clearly aren’t rigid. In the Caribbean, perhaps more than anywhere else in the world, it’s OK to go slow.

Bahama Hand Prints

Bahamian designed and made, the line of clothing and accessories at Bahama Hand Prints brings a sense of joy to its showroom. Be prepared for gorgeous colours in bright, enticing linen with links to the sea and the local community.

You’ll find it at the foot of the Paradise Island Bridge in the Island Traders Building. The shop is open on most days but if you’re lucky, you can take a tour of the small factory on weekdays and see how the prints are made. 

John Watling’s Distillery

If 11 o’clock is too early for rum for you then never fear, the John Watling’s Distillery is an historical attraction more than anything else. 

Imagine tropical gardens and century-old black olive trees and you’ll have an idea about the Buena Vista Estate in Downtown Nassau. 

To give you a sense of time, the John Watling’s Distillery began construction in the same year that George Washington became the first President of the United States in 1789. 

Guided tours take visitors around the house, showing antiques and prints that date back more than 300 years. There is also, of course, the chance to try the distillery rum.

As a poignant reminder of the years of brutality that took place, you can see a 200-year-old water well, carved out of the solid limestone by enslaved people. 

A visit here is not one of the most unique things to do in the Bahamas but it is a kind of hidden treasure. Beneath the well-oiled visitor machine, you’ll find heart amid the history (although that could be the rum talking…hic!)

12:00   pm       Lunch at Wild Thyme

For a beautiful place for a bite to eat, head to Wild Thyme, a restaurant with a sense of humour. Run by Lucia and Alex, Wild Thyme opened in 2017 and combines fresh organic food with cakes baked every day in house. 

It’s light, airy and I’d suggest you eat outside in the fragrant south-west facing garden.  Plus, if you can’t make it here for lunch, they also serve breakfast and dinner as well. Take your time, though. Nothing here runs fast!

Pirate Republic Craft Beer Brewing Company

Pirate Republic is the first and only craft brewery in The Bahamas. What began with a homemade 5-gallon brewing system in a kitchen became one of the best secret things to do in Nassau.

Inside, you’ll find talking pirates and enthusiastic owners. Take your time studying the ins and outs of the brewing process on the tour – or else just order a tasting line-up and chat with the pirates.

The Straw Market

You’ll find straw markets across the islands of the Bahamas, especially in the Family Islands, Paradise Island and Cable Beach, but the Straw Market in Nassau is one of the biggest and best organised. Weaving with straw is one of the oldest industries in the Bahamas. Straw weaving is considered one of the country’s oldest industries and you can find crafts and souvenirs to take home here.

Expect to bargain, though, and bargain hard. This isn’t a place where people enjoy browsers and photographers. 

Fort Fincastle  

Fort Fincastle is another one of those secret things to do in Nassau that links to pirates. Built on Bennet’s Hill, the fort was constructed from cut limestone in 1793 and its cloudy grey appearance was designed to protect Nassau and her harbour. 

Governor John Murray oversaw the project, an unusual design in the shape of a paddle-wheel steamer. 

If you’re visiting from Europe and running short on time, I’d recommend skipping the fort to make sure you leave time for the rest. 

The Queen’s Staircase

The Queen’s Staircase, hewn out of limestone rock by 600 enslaved people between 1793 and 1794, connects Fort Fincastle to Nassau city and some believe it formed an escape route.

The nickname comes from Queen Victoria, who reigned as the head of the British Empire between 1837 and 1901, and notably during the abolition of the slave trade in 1807. Perhaps coincidentally, the 66 steps correspond with the number of years she reigned.

Dinner: The People-to-People Experience 

Ah, this surely has to be one of the best things to do in Nassau! It is the absolute tonic to over-processed tourism and synthetic malls with plastic, packaged tat!

So, what is it? 

Well, it’s the chance to meet locals and have dinner in their home as a sign of hospitality. 

“Bahamians love any excuse for a party,” says one ambassador, and that;s the kind of thinking I love.

We met Mr and Mrs Lightbourne in their home, surrounded by lush tropical gardens, chirruping night crickets and starlight.

Henry, 67, showed us photos of his daughter and told tales about how his aunt had met the queen. 

We ate conch salad appetisers (a kind of ceviche in a shot glass) and garden salad with grilled lobster, fried grouper and coleslaw, peas and rice.

“We have a lot of influences from the Deep South,” said Henry. “After a lot of people fled to the Bahamas after the war.”

In between courses, we walk through the garden of fresh coriander, pineapple, coconut, spearmint, mulberry and spring onions.

And then the finale: guava cake and a Bahamian coconut duff.

Deeee-licious.

The People to People Project

The People to People project is run by the Bahamas Tourist Office and is completely free as a way to promote understanding and connection between locals and visitors. 

Or in other words: the real meaning of travel.

Day Three – Art, Education and Beaches

Even if you’re not staying in one of Baha Mar Grand Hyatt’s 1800 rooms, it’s worth visiting either here or Atlantis Paradise Island to witness the scale of ambition when it comes to hotel design here. These are villages, rather than hotels, with restaurants and cultural offerings to match.

Baha Mar has two offerings among many that I’d like to highlight for this list of secret things to do in Nassau: the activities for children and the Current Art Gallery. 

Local Art Gallery: The Current

The Current Gallery & Art Centre is one of my favourite secret things to do in Nassau, Bahamas. It’s one of the best hidden gems, if you’ll excuse the cliché. 

The Current runs artist residence programmes, provides a performing arts space, hosts art exhibitions where guests can chat with artists and has a permanent and variable art collection throughout the gallery and three hotels. 

And it focuses on local art and artists, encouraging both tradition and innovation.

As you can probably tell, I loved it!

The Kids’ Club

Now, I’ve seen many a kids club in my time as a travel writer but nothing that comes close to this. The Baha Mar Kids club offers cooking lessons, art lessons and marine biology exploration with starfish, flamingoes and more. There’s an aviary and a conservation and education centre and movie theatre. I mean, seriously! This is better than my entire childhood!

Dinner at Carna

Dario Cecchini, the world-famous butcher from Tuscany, believes that good butchery can make meat-eating sustainable. When cooked properly, nothing is wasted and everything is delicious: a premise he has championed since he took over his father’s family business in Italy in 1976. 

These days, he converts a steakhouse into a poetic, gastronomic feast in Carna and I can honestly say it’s the best steak I’ve ever tasted.

Day Four: Day trip to Rose Island & Swimming with Pigs

Hey! So, first off, let’s talk about swimming pigs. If you haven’t heard of it before, it doesn’t take long to realise that this a thing in the Bahamas.

Pink-snouted photos in turquoise water fill the airport arrivals hall and immigration queue – and every Nassau itinerary after that.

Yet the practice is not without its controversies, as most animal-related events are. 

The most popular place to swim with pigs is in Exuma on Pig Beach , not Nassau. But, you can take a day trip to Rose Island with Sandy Toes and swim with pigs there. 

I had a chat with the owners and the staff who work there and the pigs (Babe, Wilbur, Pumba, Larry, Mo, Ginger, Pepper and Spice) do seem to be very well looked after. The team apply sunscreen to the pigs and take care of their nutrition and health with regular vet visits and so on. They also limit the number of visitors who swim with the pigs at any one time and ask guests to treat them very gently. 

If you’re having trouble imagining how all this works, it happens like this: 

The Sandy Toes Excursion

Sandy Toes take a boat full of around 40 people from Paradise Island Ferry Terminal to Rose Island, where there’s a private beach with space for everyone. The boat journey takes around 25 minutes and there’s quite a party vibe with fruit punch and youthful enthusiasm. 

Once there, people spend the day on the beach and in the surf, with a BBQ and toilets provided. 

If you want, in groups of around 10, you can meet the pigs on the sand. If they go in the surf to swim, you can join them, but if they don’t, the staff won’t force them.

In the end, I decided against it. Pigs are pretty big and not all that toilet trained! It’s one of the first times in life I didn’t try something just to see what it was like, and you can make of that what you will!

Cocktails and Canapes

If you’re heading back to Baha Mar, don’t miss the sunset at the fabulous open-air Sky Bar.  I’d also recommend dinner at Shuang Ba, which serves high end Chinese cuisine fused with fresh Bahamian produce.

Think braised “black-gold” abalone and Chaozhou-style dumplings in ornate, darkwood-and-scarlet booths. Keep an eye out for the central marble masterpiece, too. It was quite the operation to bring it here from China!

Day Five: head to the other islands

If I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. I would really recommend spending time on the other islands in the Bahamas. Nassau is really well connected and you’ll discover a whole new view of life in this part of the Caribbean.

Junkanoo Beach and the Western Esplanade

Junkanoo Beach (also know as the Western Esplanade) merges into Arawak Cay and Long Wharf, the closest beaches to the cruise ship dock. As a result, it’s fair to say that the area receives its fair share of partygoers when the cruise ships are in town. 

But the rest of the time, you can also find locals with their families, horse rides and pony rides and the sight of those might ships heading in to dock.

Anywhere not to go?

Fish fry and over the hill.

It’s a matter of opinion, but the US travel advisory says this at the time of publication:

“Exercise caution in the area known as “Over the Hill” (south of Shirley Street) and the Fish Fry at Arawak Cay in Nassau, especially at night.”

Walking Tours in Nassau

It’s reasonably straightforward to visit all of the top attractions in Nassau by either walking or taking a taxi.

Exumas Itinerary: How to Plan the Perfect Trip to the Most Beautiful Islands in the Caribbean

It’s funny the different ways trips end up happening. I have some spots I go to annually, traditions from childhood. Special places I go to as often as possible…my go to destinations. Places I plan and save to visit that are most likely once in a lifetime trips. And then there are the trips that end up happening pretty randomly. Like, because I saw adorable little pigs swimming in turquoise water on Instagram.

I’ll be honest. That’s how my trip to the Exumas ended up happening. Because of the pigs. But first let’s back up and get a little context.

If you’re looking for paradise on earth, you’ll find it in the Exumas. The Exuma Cays are a chain of 360+ islands in the Bahamas just southeast of Nassau. They’re famous for their white sand beaches and having some of the bluest water in the world. Actually, before the Exumas “took off” as a popular destination, when asked how visitors found out about the Exumas, most visitors would say they were looking on Google Earth for the bluest water in the world and they found it in the Exumas!

And of course…those adorable swimming pigs!

My Itinerary

My trip to the Exumas happened in June (summer is considered “off season” in a lot of places in the Caribbean) with a group of NINE girlfriends. Traveling from Tulsa (OK), I will tell you…it was not easy getting to the Exumas. 95% of flights to Georgetown (Great Exuma) come from Miami (and when we went there was only one flight a day). So our travel day started bright and early leaving Tulsa, laying over in Dallas and then Miami before finally arriving in Georgetown. And of course, we were delayed in Dallas (due to general incompetency : ) and our plane came in late to Miami. After RUNNING to get to the gate, they had already closed it. We were some of the first ones to get to the gate and the agent informed us that we couldn’t board (even though the plane was still at the gate) and the flights were sold out for the next three days but they could put us on standby for the third day. Umm, what? 

We were a little stunned thinking that 3/4 of our vacation was suddenly out the window and as more people from our delayed flight started showing up at the gate, it became clear that 20-30 had also missed the daily flight to Georgetown. Let me tell you…it started to get a little loud and it wasn’t very long until the situation ended up on a manager’s radar. Long story short (too late!) they ended up reopening the aircraft door (which apparently is not supposed to happen) and hurrying us all on board without checking tickets, passports, or anything. What an experience.

Anyways, we made it to Georgetown, got our rental cars, and checked into our vacation rental. We booked a large villa that was part of a little complex that had a shared pool and it was right on the beach. We did a little grocery run that night as we planned to have quite a few of our meals in our villa.

We were on the island for about 4 days and here’s what we did:

• An 8-hour boat excursion that took us almost all the way across the island chain. In addition to seeing the most insanely blue water and white sand, we swam with the pigs, snorkeled in Thunderball Grotto, swam with nurse sharks, visited some iguanas, and sunbathed on a truly amazing sand bar. Easily the highlight of the trip.
• Spent Sunday at the Chat n’ Chill for their weekly pig roast. We took a ferry over from Georgetown and spent the day playing in the water, lounging under palm trees, chowing down on local food, and hiking across the island.
• Drove down to Little Exuma to see the Tropic of Cancer beach and hang out at Santana’s. We did not see Johnny Depp.
• Poked around Georgetown and did a little shopping.

Overall, it was a nice, relaxing trip, but I still felt like I got to see what I came for. Here’s my #1 recommendation: the prettiest sites in the Exumas are best seen by boat. While the beaches are spectacular, the real beauty of the Exumas is the water. You have to plan at LEAST one boat excursion during your trip as getting to zip in between white sandy cays as you glide through turquoise clear water is the real magic of the Exumas.

Where to Stay in the Exumas

While the Exumas are made up of a lot of islands, not many of them are inhabited (the majority are private) and there are even fewer places to stay.

Great Exuma

Great Exuma is the main island of the Exumas and home to Georgetown (where the airport is). You’ll find the most options of places to stay here. You’ll also have the biggest variety of restaurants and shopping (although still limited). There are a couple of resorts on Great Exuma but it’s mostly small inns and vacation rentals.

Sandals : If you want the ultimate resort experience and you’re willing to shell out the big bucks, Sandals Emerald Bay is pretty incredible. It’s adults only and it sounds like you’d never want to leave the resort! Check pricing and read reviews here .

Grand Isle Resort and Spa : This is where I would stay if I make it back to the Exumas. It shares the same beach with Sandals, but it’s a much more laid back resort experience. The pools are gorgeous and we ate at the restaurant by the pool a couple of times. If you want some of the resort amenities (pool and restaurant) at a better bargain, Grand Isle Villas offers one, two, and three bedroom villa style options. Check pricing and read reviews here .

We stayed in a vacation rental in the “Jimmy Hill Edition”. It’s a collection of about 6 vacation homes/condos that have a shared pool. The villa was great and the beach was beautiful but the water on this side of the island was pretty rough and we didn’t spend a lot of time at the beach there.

Little Exuma

Connected to Great Exuma by bridge, Little Exuma is its smaller and quieter neighbor. You won’t find any resorts here but there are plenty of vacation rentals that front its idyllic beaches. Little Exuma is perhaps the best of both worlds. You have quiet, beautiful Caribbean style beaches but the restaurants on Great Exuma are still accessible by car.

Search for vacation rentals here , and if you want to stay on one of the world’s most epic (and uncrowded beaches) look for something on the Tropic of Cancer beach.

Staniel Cay

Staniel Cay is quite a ways northwest from Great Exuma and it’s the boating capital of the Exumas. If you’re chartering, this is the place where you’ll pick up your boat. This small island has less of a local feel than Great and Little Exuma and feels more like a resort community. There are no cars on the island and only a couple of places to stay but it feels pretty perfect. It’s also close to Big Farmer’s Cay (where the swimming pigs are), Thunderball Grotto, and an incredible sand bar.

The most convenient place to stay on the island is the Staniel Cay Yacht Club (it’s the only resort/inn) and it’s pretty adorable. There are also a few vacation rentals. Search here for more options.

Morning: historical downtown exploration.

• Pirates of Nassau Museum : Begin your Nassau journey with a dive into its swashbuckling past. MIAMI BEACH — Carnival Cruise Line has released another round of updates on what travelers can expect when its new private destination Grand Bahama Celebration Key opens.

Debuting in summer 2025, the port of call will be welcoming ships from Florida ports Port Canaveral, PortMiami, Tampa and Jacksonville as well as six other U.S. ports.

The 369-acre site less than 20 miles east of Freeport will be the first dedicated to Carnival Cruise Line, although Carnival ships have used sister line destinations Princess Cays and Half Moon Cay for years.

The largest port construction project in the line’s history will be carved into five segments the company calls portals, and Carnival released details about the third one tied to retail, an artisan village called Lokono Cove.

Named in deference to the native Lucayan language, “lokono” means “the people.” It was the winning selection from Grand Bahamas resident Deidre Rahming, who was on hand in Miami Beach with an entourage from the Bahamian government on Tuesday at the Seatrade Cruise Global conference.

She received a check for $5,000 from Carnival and a future day pass for the resort, which won’t normally be open to visitors from the island. The line says at least 300 jobs will be generated for locals serving the cruise guests.

Lokono Cove will have kiosks and stores alongside “an authentic Bahamian artisan market” showcasing local craftsmanship, according to Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy. Beyond the items for sale, the space will have music and murals to enhance the space, and local food.

“Lokono Cove will be a treasure trove – a place for our guests to immerse themselves in the spirit of the Bahamas and find locally inspired keepsakes, symbols of paradise they can share with loved ones, or cherish for themselves for years to come,” said Duffy said/ “Honoring the beauty and culture of the Bahamas is integral to our plans for Celebration Key, and that will be on display throughout Lokono Cove.”

The space also will be the excursion gateway for visitors to explore Grand Bahama.

It’s the third name drop by Carnival following the reveal of welcome area Paradise Plaza and adult-friendly area Calypso Lagoon. The final two space names and details, which will be a family-friendly area and an adults-only private area, will be revealed later.

The site will also have a south-facing mile-long beachfront expanse and massive freshwater inland lagoon the line says is the largest in the Bahamas and Caribbean.

Paradise Plaza features a rainbow-colored walkway through a sunshine entranceway with a 10-story “Suncastle” as a centerpiece. The welcome area is the place to book the day’s activities including cabanas, water sports and shore excursions. The area will also feature a Bahamian-themed fountain and ice cream shop.

Calypso Lagoon falls just to the west, home to the sport court and freshwater lagoon and lounging options galore. It’s home to a bar with 50 swings that let visitors dip their feet into the water, and just one of many bars serving the space and two full-service restaurants and other casual snack shacks. And adults-only area of the portal will feature a swim-up bar with a DJ, food trucks and more lounging options.

Future expansion will build beyond the five portals including the construction of a water park.

The port of call will open with one dock capable of handling its largest ships, the 6,000-passenger Excel class, including Port Canaveral-based Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration out of Miami.

The line announced this year a $100 million plan to expand that with a second dock so that it could handle up to four such ships beginning in 2026. That expansion, which grows the line’s investment to $600 million so far, means it expects nearly 4 million passengers to visit the site annually by 2028, an average of 11,000 visitors every day. For now, it has more than 500 itineraries planned among 18 ships available to book.

Other U.S. ports visiting the new site are Galveston, Texas; Baltimore; Norfolk, Virginia; Mobile, Alabama, Charleston, S.C. and New Orleans.

“As is fitting for our plans for Grand Bahama island, our vision for Celebration Key is quite grand, and we’re already thinking about the next phase of expansion and development,” said Duffy when the pier expansion was announced. “Building the second pier now allows us to implement growth plans and build itineraries with certainty, and signals to the local community just how important this development is to Carnival Cruise Line and the future of the island.”
