Barbados Cruise Port

Barbados cruise terminal is also known as Deep Water Harbour and is located approximately 1 mile from the Bridgetown city center (within a 10-15 minute walk). It consists of 4 quays that can accommodate up to 6 cruise vessels at a time. Depending on the assigned berthing location, the port and cruise line may arrange a complimentary shuttle service to the main terminal building.

Inside the terminal building, you will find souvenir and duty-free shops, a tourist information center, a post office, a designated Wi-Fi area, car rental services, tour operator booths, and restrooms.

Tour buses, a taxi station, rent a car service and a small craft market are also available outside the terminal. Taxi fares are officially displayed, however, always confirm the price in advance to avoid inconvenience.

Major cruise lines sailing to Barbados include Norwegian Cruise Line, Marella Cruises, Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Costa Cruises, Seabourn, MSC Cruises, AIDA Cruises, Windstar Cruises, P&O Cruises, and Viking Ocean Cruises .

Getting Around Barbados Port

  • The official currency in Barbados is the Barbados dollar (BBD) and the exchange rate is approximately 1 USD to 2 BBD. US currency is widely accepted across the island, and most stores and restaurants accept major credit cards too.
  • The port area and the city center are flat and suitable for people with walking difficulties/wheelchair users.
  • Bridgetown city center is located within a 10-15 minute walk from the port. There is a waterfront boardwalk that stretches between Port Barbados’ Main Gate and the historic city center along Princess Alice Highway. The walk is pleasant and scenic. For those who prefer not to walk, there is a convenient shuttle service from the terminal building to downtown.
  • The Barbados Transportation Board operates public buses across the island and you can check bus schedules at www.transportboard.com . Even though this is the cheapest way to get around, this may not be the most convenient due to the ship’s limited time in port.
  • Taxis are probably the best way to explore the island, however, they are not metered. I strongly suggest you visit the tourist information office and get guidance about official fares before hiring the taxi, so you know what to expect and always agree on the price in advance with the driver. Check out the taxi prices on Barbados.org .
  • Rent-a-car is another convenient option, especially if you travel with a group. Check out Barbados rent-a-car deals and prices
  • Barbados has warm tropical weather with pleasant temperatures all year round. The dry season lasts from mid-December to mid-April and this is the best time to visit the island. The rainy season lasts from July to November and tropical storms may occur during that period.
  • Barbados International Airport (Grantley Adams Airport) is located 17 km/10.5 miles from the port of Barbados.

Best Barbados Beaches Near the Cruise Port

Some of the best beaches near the Barbados cruise port lie within a long walk or short drive.

The island has more than 60 beaches covering 70 square miles, according to the Barbados Tourism Authority.

Crane Beach in the St. Philip parish on the east coast is the best known of the bunch. It is a 35-minute drive from the Bridgetown cruise port on the west side of the island.

Cruise lines offer beach excursions that usually last about four hours. The cost for adults is around $20 to $50 per person including transportation from the cruise pier. The price depends on amenities such as a guaranteed chair and umbrella.

2 Beaches Within a Long Walk

Barbados has two beaches near the cruise port, but they are a long walk or short drive at about one mile and one and a half miles respectively.

Brandon’s Beach is one of the closest to the cruise pier at about one mile to the north. Moderately fit people can walk to it in about 15 to 20 minutes. Visitors can tour the nearby Mount Gay Rum Distilleries.

Three more beaches lie just to the north of Brandon’s Beach. They are Brighton, Paradise and Bratt Rock beaches. Visitors will need a taxi or rental car to reach them.

Brownes Beach at Carlisle Bay is about 1.5 miles south of the Bridgetown cruise terminal. It is right by the tourism heart of Bridgetown, so it is a good option for anyone who wants to combine a city tour and a beach visit on their own, which is what we did.

Physically fit and budget minded visitors may walk it in about 20 to 30 minutes if it isn’t too hot. Fortunately, the downtown tourist area lies between the cruise terminal and Brownes Beach. Visitors can tour downtown and then continue a little more south to the beach (or vice versa).

Otherwise, I recommend taking either a taxi to downtown or the much less expensive public bus system. Fares are $3.50 per person in Barbados dollars and $1.75 U.S. Buses accept only Barbados currency.

During our most recent visit to Barbados, we took an inexpensive taxi into town for walking, shopping and dining. We eventually found ourselves by Brownes Beach, which is a short distance from Independence Square. So visitors who go directly to Brownes Beach from the cruise port can backtrack into town if they have the time for a quick tour.

Brownes Beach is just the starting point for a series of beaches strung together. They are Bayshore, Peebles and, for some reason, a second stretch also called Brownes Beach. But they are farther south than Bridgetown and will require transportation to get back and forth from the cruise port.

Anyone with enough time and a rental car can visit multiple beaches during the course of a day. Here is a summary of some of the most well-known beaches in Barbados :

Where is the port and cruise ships dock

The Cruise Port aka Deep Water Harbor is located on the South-Western side of the Island and, although not exactly right by the center of Bridgetown, it is within walking distance - 1 mile (or 1.700 meters) - to the main streets of the city.

Most luxury cruise lines (like Regent or Crystal) offer complimentary shuttle buses . If your cruise line doesn't offer a shuttle bus, there is also a paid bus - US $2.00 per person, each way - right outside the terminal. Taxis are also available but it doesn't make much sense to pay extra unless you really need to.

The cruise terminal is one of the best in the Caribbean with all services and amenities the cruise traveler may require. On a large building, you will find an excellent Visitor Information Center , an area with Free mobile-friendly Wi-Fi , restrooms, souvenir and duty-free shops (both jewelry and liquor) and, last but not least, a post office where you can buy Barbadian Postal Stamps known for their exquisite designs.

Outside the Terminal, there is a dedicated shaded area for tour buses (on the left side), a few more souvenir and clothing shops (t-shirts, beach attire), and local transportation services such as Car Rental, Scooters, and ATV - be aware that driving in Barbados is on the left as expected on a former British Colony.

Within walking distance

For those that enjoy walking, the path from the exit of the Cruise Terminal along the ocean up to the historical downtown and the Careenage (an interesting area of Bridgetown) is both safe and pleasurable . Have in mind that it will be hot and you should wear cool clothing, walking shoes, a hat, and sunscreen is never frivolous.

Photo of Walking Path to Bridgetown Barbados

Walking Path to Bridgetown

The wide avenue outside the exit gates of the cruise port is the Princess Alice Highway. On the right side, by the ocean, the path is lined with trees and along the way, there are a few places with benches and tables to have a rest. On the left side there are a few places worth a look: the Rolli's Bar and Grill, the Caribbean Cigar Company selling the Royal Barbados brand and the Pelican Village Craft Center .

The Highlights of Bridgetown

Once you pass the Bridgetown Fish Market (on the right) you would have walked already 1/2 mile (800 meters). Around 300 feet (100 meters) more and you will have the alternative to keep walking straight into Hincks Street or turn left into Cumberland Street . The latter will take you to Jubilee Gardens and St. Mary's Church (a major Anglican church in Bridgetown) which is a stone's throw away from the shopping area of downtown (Broad Street and around).

The walk into Hinks Street leads to Wharf Road, a Boardwalk and the Careenage. Along the way, at the Cloister Building, on the left, the Agapey Chocolate Factory is a place to visit if you have a sweet tooth and even consider a tour (1 hour for US$20).

After a right followed by a left turn, you will find yourself on Wharf Road with its boardwalk and it becomes clear that you are in historical surroundings. This is the place where, once upon a time, ships were careened onto a side to be repaired, scrubbed and painted, hence the Careenage eponymous. Now, on the narrow mouth of the Constitution River , sleek yachts, touristic and fishing expeditions boats dock on both banks. Farther along, the Wharf Road borders the National Heroes Square with a statue of Lord Nelson and the imposing Parliament Building which are impossible to miss.

The pedestrian Chamberlain Bridge crosses the river to the south bank. At the end of the bridge, the Independence Arch is a famous landmark and a great photo op. Immediately after, on the left, is the seafront greenery of Interior St. Mary's Church and on the right is where you could have a refreshing drink or a light lunch before the Covid pandemic. Unfortunately, popular places like the Marina Bar and the Waterfront Café have closed down.

For those interested in all things historical, you should return to the National Heroes Square to visit the Parliament Building, St. Michaels Cathedral (built in 1784) and the Nidhe Israel Museum and Synagogue (an absolute must-see regardless of your faith or absence of).

If shopping is on your plans, turn left on Heroes Square into Board Street as this is where the best duty-free shops and departments stores are found.

Among the typical stores found all over the caribbean, here are some othe best shops you will find in Barbados Cruise port:

  • Colombian Emeralds
  • Diamonds International
  • Litlle Switzerland
  • The Royal Shop
  • David Yurman

It took a few calls at Bridgetown Cruise Port for the Editor to realized that the Careenage is very close to the famous Boatyard Beach Bar and Club - less than 1/4 of a mile (400 meters) south of the Independence Arch. In fact, the Carlisle Bay's northern tip is the mouth of the Constitutional River , and on the bay, the Boatyard is just one of the many clubs and bars that line the sugar white sands and turquoise waters of Barbados spectacular beaches of this Bay and where the best snorkeling sites in Barbados are located. However, be aware that Carlisle Bay is close to two miles long.

Editors' Tip: if the Boatyard or any of the beach clubs on Carlisle Bay are on your to do list, it is advisable to get there (or back) by taxi as the walk from the cruise port is over 2 miles (3 km).

Top things to do on a cruise to Barbados

Accra Beach, also called Rockley Beach, found around 6 km from Barbados Cruise Terminal, is nearly postcard perfect. With turquoise waters and sands as delicate as silk, this south coast shore is genuinely among the most incredible things to do in Barbados.

If you are looking for the finest beach locations in Barbados for families, see no further than Accra Beach. With its shallow blue waters and remote swim locations, it’s also the most suitable shore for swimming in Barbados.

A vibrant retail space complete with kiosks offering food and cold drinks is just back from the beachfront. Surfboards and boogie boards are available to rent, and for people with sailing aptitudes, Sunfish mono hull and Hobie Cats sailboats are also available. Not to note, the seaside has excellent waves perfect for windsurfing and body boarding.

Don’t forget to walk along the famous Barbados Boardwalk. With several exclusive seafront restaurants and fast food joints, it’s an excellent place to fulfill your taste buds after hours of exploring. Furthermore, it seems fantastic and eye-catching at night.

Beaches In Barbados

Accra Beach is backed by a shaded park that fetches the finest of Barbados to the coast, with mustachioed old timers marketing handicrafts and dignified dames.

It’s a shore that even sand-scorners will savor— there’s a ton of shady areas, cold beverages, and always something running on for visitors.

Carlisle Bay Beaches :

Found 7.5 km away from Barbados Cruise Port, these lovely beaches fascinate tourists with their glowing aquamarine waters and milky-white sands found on the southwestern coast.

Carlisle Bay, home to a few of the most stunning Barbados shores, is literally minutes off from the island’s capital. In fact, a bus trip from downtown Bridgetown will drop you out to this paradise-like bay loaded with white sand and beautiful waters.

Here, you will discover three famous public beachfront; Bay shore Beach, Browne Beach, and Pebble Beach. All are backed by green stretches filled with picnic tables, and at Pebble Beach, you will discover showers and washrooms.

And, with its small or non-existent waves and shallow waters, Carlisle Bay is also the safest coast for children in Barbados. These beaches also have safeguards on duty.

Carlisle Bay is about 10 minutes off from downtown Bridgetown. There are lots of taxis ready to lead you to these shores. But, we suggest taking a bus trip to the Fair child Street Bus Terminal as it’s more reasonable.

Various restaurants are placed along this expanse of beach, but the most suitable spot to head for a fish cutter sandwich is the popular Cuzz’s Fish Stand.

If you discover yourself here early in the morning, the first thing you may witness is the racehorses being bathed in the water.

Bathsheba Bay Beach : Beaches In Barbados

Found almost 20 km From Barbados Cruise Terminal, on the restless Atlantic part of the island, Bathsheba Bay beach is not for the faint-hearted. Giant waves are a regular occurrence here and as a consequence, the island is a haven for surfers and photographers.

Surfers head to the “Soup Bowl” to capture the most excellent rides, and observing them doing their flicks is a fantastic way to spend part of an afternoon. Also, if you are not a surfer, this shore is well worth visiting.

Photography lovers will discover their bliss by catching photographs of Bathsheba’s picturesque rock figures. Plus, the beach is an ideal place to savor a picnic and fly kites.

Public transport is extremely limited in the region. So, if you are planning to explore this site, consider renting a car. You can easily combine a tour here with a stop at the Andromeda Botanical Gardens, just a small drive away. Also, Bath Beach is near Bathsheba bay.

Swimming is not suggested here, too, because of the site’s rough rock formations and waters.

Crane beach :

Positioned on the island’s southeastern end and around 23 km from Barbados Cruise Terminal, this picturesque seaside is renowned for its clean sands and scenic cliffs.

The location at Crane Beach is breathtaking. Towering cliffs with a luxury hotel perched on top face down on a broad curve of beach with beach chairs spread out only waiting for visitors.

Entry to the shore is limited to two choices: via the deluxe Crane Resort and down 98 steps, which is for people visiting and planning to pay some money on the resort, or the other end of the beach down a small road and over a rocky trail.

Beaches In Barbados

Besides its captivating natural charm, the shore also has some excellent surf, making it a perfect place for surfing and boogie boarding. Additionally, there are coastal coves that offer tourists sheltered swimming close to the harbor.

Sunbeds can be leased, and there is a small vendor offering food and cold beverages at the back of the beachfront.

This beach is perfect for a romantic escape, which can include a delightful lunch at the hotel, after an enjoyable day on the beach. Try to explore Crane at low tide when it’s broader and more picturesque. Also, you may desire to get up early, and witness a majestic sunrise vista.

Bottom Bay Beach :

Famous for its incredible tropical vistas, this cove is found in Saint Philip Parish and around 25 km from Barbados Cruise Terminal .

You can reach here by strolling down some stairs via a cliff cut. The location of the site is spectacular, with high palm trees close to the back of the site and background cliffs on three sides.

Bottom Bay is undoubtedly among the most captivating shores in the Caribbean, with backdrop cliffs and towering palm trees. What’s more, it’s not as overcrowded as the other famous beachfront in Barbados.

Beaches In Barbados

And, even when there are some beach goers nearby, you will still discover a great place on the sand to unwind, thanks to its immense size.

Once you have your fill of sun and sand, go to the giant cave that extends into the rocky face at Bottom Bay’s north end.

Watch out for sea turtles near the beach and whales further out. There are no safeguards, and currents can be dangerous when accessing the water. It is only suggested for professional swimmers.

St Kitts vs Nevis

To give you a lay of the land, here's a super quick note on geography. St Kitts has a neighboring island called Nevis. Nevis is just south and slightly smaller than St Kitts. The two combined make up one country, known as “St Kitts and Nevis,” cleverly enough. The channel of water separating the two is two miles wide and known as “The Narrows.”

Your cruise port (Port Zante) is located in Basseterre, just north of most of St Kitts most popular beaches.

The geography of these islands make for stunning views . Both St Kitts and Nevis islands are formed from volcanic structures , jutting up from the islands center. Most of the islands’ interior area is uninhabitable due to the steep terrain.

One major road circles each of the islands, with smaller roads branching off allowing access to beaches and other attractions. To drive around the entire island would take just over an hour.

How much does it cost to cruise to St Kitts?

Are you cruising to Basseterre? If you don't yet have a St Kitts cruise booked, check out our link below. There you'll find every cruise option to this port with the cheapest available pricing options . Compare the cost from multiple providers. Feel free to click through for all of the details you'll need.

Waves - North vs South Beaches?

St Kitts length spans roughly 18 miles from east to west and about 5 miles north to south . While the island is very narrow, beaches on St Kitts northern shore are different than those on the south. The main difference is the water. Northern St Kitts beaches have exposure to the Ocean while the southern shore faces the Caribbean. Expect more waves at northern beaches and slightly cooler waters.

From cruise port to beaches area, the distance is only a few miles. Taxi costs will range from $12 to $25 (10 to 25 minutes) depending on the beach you choose.

At most of the beaches in St Kitts, you won’t find the white sand that you may be picturing. Instead, you’ll find a darker, coarser sand . This is due to the volcanic structure of the islands. Some people enjoy this very natural look, while others may head to the Marriott Resort for the picturesque white sands.

Now that you've gotten a good sense of this little island paradise, let's look at the best beaches in St Kitts near cruise port.

Here's a list of St Kitts best beaches. Feel free to click ahead to your favorite.

  • Sand Bank Beach St Kitts
  • South Frigate Bay Beach St Kitts
  • North Frigate Bay Beach St Kitts
  • Pinneys Beach St Kitts
  • Cockleshell Beach St Kitts
  • South Friars Beach St Kitts

Sand Bank Beach is located on the northern side of the island. But unlike other northern St Kitts beaches, Sand Bank is relatively calm . You can see by the geography that this stretch of coastline is more protected. You'll enjoy waves just large enough to frolic, but while still very safe and enjoyable for swimming.

Another characteristic making Sand Bank Beach unique is its lack of commercial activity . While every other beach offers access to water sports and beach bars, you won't find those here. The beach was inaccessible just a few years ago.

Sand Bank Beach

Taxi from St Kitts Cruise Sand Bank Beach : A taxi from port will cost roughly $23 (for up to four people). It should take roughly 20 minutes to get there. Make sure to negotiate the rate before agreeing to ride.

Beach Quality : Sand Bank Beach was unaccessible not too long ago. As such, its natural beauty has been preserved. While fairly narrow, the beach should be far less visited than the other options, so you won't be fighting for space.

Beach Bars : None. Sand Bank Beach offers no beach bars and you won't find vendors selling refreshments or other.

Amenities : As mentioned, Sand Bank Beach offers less commercial activity. You won't find public restrooms and the typical amenities found at other St Kitts Beaches. If vacationing with kids, this might not be the best option.

Snorkeling : Snorkeling is decent on Sand Bank Beach. The cove is relatively protected so waters are calmer. But, the underwater sea life is more sparse than with some southern beach options.

Best for : Nature lovers. This beach is popular for couples and low-maintenance travelers.

Frigate Bay is your closest option when choosing among the best beaches in St Kitts, located roughly 10 minutes from your cruise port.

This section of the island is very narrow (north to south), allowing you to actually walk across the island from South Frigate Bay to North Frigate Bay.

This southern stretch of beach is smaller (about 1/4 mile long) than its northern counterpart. It's located on the Caribbean Coast so you'll find calmer waters . South Frigate Bay Beach is known for its access to plenty of water sports options.

Here's everything you need to know about South Frigate Bay Beach in St Kitts.

South Frigate Bay Beach

Taxi from St Kitts Cruise Port to South Frigate Bay Beach : A taxi from port will cost roughly $10 (for up to four people). It should take no more than 10 minutes to get there. Make sure to negotiate the rate before agreeing to ride.

Beach Quality : South Frigate Bay beach spans roughly 1/4 mile. The sand is lighter and better kept than other beaches on the island.

Beach Bars : There's no shortage of beach bars on South Frigate Bay. One of the most popular is "Vibes Beach Bar" in the center of the beach. If you're looking for a party "vibe," this is your best bet on the island. If this isn't your scene, there are plenty of other beach bar options a short walk up or down the beach. Cold beers will cost at most $4 (at Vibes) and $2 elsewhere.

Amenities : Beach chairs and umbrellas are readily available for rent. At Vibes, you'll pay 2x what it'll cost at neighboring options. Expect to pay around $30 for two chairs and an umbrella there and $15 at neighboring beach shacks.

Water Sports : South Frigate Bay has all of the water sporting activity that you could want. Expect to pay around $50 for 30 minutes on a jet ski.

Snorkeling : Many regard South Frigate Bay as the best snorkeling in St Kitts. You'll encounter calm and clear waters and plenty of undersea life. It's very likely you'll spot a sea turtle here. Snorkeling gear is available for rent here for roughly $10 for the day.

Best for : South Frigate Bay Beach is best for water sports activity. You'll find everything from kayaks to jet packs here. This beach also provides your best collection of beach bars in one area! Stay once the sun sets for the best night life on the island.

North Frigate Bay offers one of the longest, uninterrupted stretches of beaches on the island. On the very northern end of the bay, you'll find the Marriott Resort. If you're looking for the nicest beach on the island, you'll find it there at the Marriott. We highly recommend the Resort Day Pass option for use of this beach and all of the other amenities offered by the Marriott.

Here's everything you need to know about North Frigate Bay Beach in St Kitts.

Taxi from St Kitts Cruise Port to North Frigate Bay Beach : A taxi from port will cost roughly $10 (for up to four people). It should take no more than 10 minutes to get there. Make sure to negotiate the rate before agreeing to ride.

North Frigate Bay Beach

Beach Quality : North Frigate Bay beach is significantly longer than its southern counterpart. The stretch of beach is about one mile long. The best beach on the island is located at the Marriott on North Frigate Bay. Fortunately, they offer a Resort Day Pass to use their beach and amenities.

Beach Bars : You'll find many more beach bar options on South Frigate Bay. Head there if looking for a drink.

Amenities : Amenities aren't readily available on North Frigate Bay Beaches as on the south bay. The exception is the Marriott resort, with loads of amenities... even a full casino.

Snorkeling : You'll find good snorkeling towards the northern end of North Bay Beach. Bring your own gear, however, because equipment won't be as easily rented here vs on the southern beaches.

Best for : VIP option at the Marriott Resort . There, you'll find the best beach on the island along with all of the amenities you'd need.

Of course we had to include a Nevis beach even though our list is technically, "best St Kitts beaches near cruise port." The reason... it's beautiful and has a great story .

It'll take you a little extra time to get there, but the commute is beautiful. You'll take a scenic drive through the mountain ranges all the way south to Majors Bay. From there, you'll hop on a quick ferry for the two-mile float across the harbor to Nevis Island.

It's more likely that you'll run into Oprah than large cruise crowds. Celebrities like "O," Beyonce, Jay Z and Keith Richards have been known to frequent the small island beach.

Here's everything that you need to know about Pinney's Beach.

Pinneys Beach

Taxi from St Kitts Cruise Port to Pinney's : Rather than a normal taxi, you'll jump on a water taxi to get down to Nevis Island. Conveniently, it leaves from Port Zante where your cruise ship will be docked. A ticket will cost $9 each way. The ferry will take you to Charlestown, the capital of Nevis. From there, you can take a short cab ride or walk the half-mile to the southern-most point of Pinney's Beach. Alternatively, you can opt for an organized excursion. We recommend the Nevis Beach Getaway . For a very reasonable price, you'll be escorted to Penney's Beach and treated to a welcome drink, beach chairs and umbrella.

Beach Quality : Penney's Beach is gorgeous and huge. At roughly 4 miles in length, you won't be fighting for a spot. Expect soft, white sand, swaying palm trees, and clear blue water. It's often referred to as the best beach on Nevis Island. You won't find crowds like with beaches in St Kitts.

Beach Bars : The most popular beach bar on Pinney's Beach is called Sunshine's. It's infamous for its Killer Bee Rum Punch. There's a great beach bar vibe and the drinks go down a little too easy here.

Amenities : You won't find publicly available restrooms on this stretch of beach coastline. You have the option to use Sunshine's facilities if grabbing a drink or a bite. There are three other beach bars surrounding Sunshines that are all great alternatives. You'll find vendors providing water sports options, beach chairs and umbrellas. With the organized excursion mentioned above, these are included in your tour.

Snorkeling : Snorkeling is great on Pinney's Beach. You'll find a shallow reef just off shore, serving as home to all kinds of fish, barracuda, turtles, stingray, and more. Local vendors can provide gear if not bringing your own.

Best for : Cruisers looking for an exclusive getaway. The four miles of beach coastline offer plenty of seclusion.

Cockleshell Beach is one of the furthest from your cruise port. But, the views are worth the drive. Located at the southern end of St Kitts, you'll be facing the island of Nevis and its stunning landscape .

You'll also benefit from calm waters if looking to swim. The already surrounded bay has the added protection of Nevis Island, blocking any rough waters from the south.

There are two main restaurants / bars on Cockleshell Beach, one located at each end of the beach. You'll also have vendors providing cheap beers and very reasonable chairs and umbrellas in between the two.

Below is everything you need to know about Cockleshell Beach in St Kitts.

Cockleshell Beach

Taxi from St Kitts Cruise Port to Cockleshell Beach : A taxi from port will cost roughly $25 (for up to four people). It should take roughly 20 minutes to get there. Make sure to negotiate the rate before agreeing to ride.

Beach Quality : Cockleshell is one of the longest beaches in St Kitts at roughly 3/4 mile. As the name implies, the sand contains shell pieces throughout. You'll also find darker sand patches as with most beaches in St Kitts. The view is spectacular, looking directly at Nevis Island's impressive landscape.

Beach Bars : On each end of Cockleshell Beach, you'll find an option to eat and drink. On the west side of the bay is Salt Mill. The upscale restaurant will be a bit pricier and great if looking for more "fine dining." On the opposite end of the beach is the renown Reggae Beach Bar Grille. There you'll find a casual atmosphere and comfortable beach vibe.

Amenities : You'll have all the amenities you need on Cockleshell Beach. Food, drink, water sports and massages are available from vendors. Bathrooms can be accessed from either of the restaurants mentioned above. You'll have the option to rent beach chairs and umbrellas from either ($20), or from cheaper alternatives like Loxs-een Beach Hut ($10). Jet skis are very cheap here quoted as low as $25 for 30 minutes.

Snorkeling : Snorkeling is possible on Cockleshell Beach, but not the best option on the island. Vendors have available equipment for a very reasonable price ($10 daily). Your best bet is at either end of the bay, where you'll likely find more fish, stingrays, and maybe even an octopus.

Best for : Great views and calm waters. Also good if trying to avoid large cruise crowds. It's the furthest away from your cruise port and lesser visited by passengers.

VIP Resort Option : Treat yourself while in St Kitts with a Park Hyatt Resort Day Pass . The exclusive resort offers all of the amenities you'll need including a two-course lunch and wifi!

Also on the Caribbean Side, South Friar's Beach is just past South Frigate Bay when headed from the cruise port.

It's the second-closest of our best beaches in St Kitts. The quarter-mile stretch of beach offers restaurants at each end, similar to Cockleshell Beach.

South Friar's Beach is great for swimming and snorkeling . It's warm and mild waters offer great conditions for those planning to get wet.

South Friars Beach

Taxi from St Kitts Cruise Port to South Friar's Beach : A taxi from port will cost roughly $16 (for up to four people). It should take roughly 12 minutes to get there. Make sure to negotiate the rate before agreeing to ride.

Beach Quality : It's smaller than other beaches in St Kitts at just 1/4 mile in length. But, don't be turned off by the smaller size. South Friar's Beach is one of the more popular in St Kitts due to its sand quality and views. Walking from one end to the other is a bit tougher than other beaches as there's a significant slope due to elevation changes. Also expect a bit more crowds than if traveling further south.

Beach Bars : On each end of South Friar's Beach, you'll find an option to eat and drink. On the far west side of the bay is Carambola Beach Club. The upscale establishment offers fine dining both inside and out. Food and drink here will be significantly more expensive (rightfully) than on the opposite end of the beach at the Shipwreck Beach Bar.

Amenities : Both restaurants offer bathrooms, lounge chairs, umbrellas and other options for purchase. Vendors between the two restaurants provide additional options along with water sporting equipment. Expect to pay roughly $40 for two chairs and umbrellas at each end and about half of that in the middle of the bay. WiFi is available and free throughout South Friar's Beach. As far as we know, this is the only free wifi at any St Kitts beaches.

Snorkeling : South Friar's Beach has some of the best snorkeling in St Kitts. Head east towards the end of the beach by Shipwreck Bar. There, you can hop in to enjoy the protected cove and all it has to offer (sea turtles, rocks, urchins, corals, etc). The calm waters are enjoyed not only by snorkelers, but much of the surrounding sea creatures.

Best for : Snorkeling. The calm waters, abundance of sea life, and protected cove offer the best environment for snorkelers in St Kitts.

There isn't a lot in the Bridgetown cruise port, so plan on paying for a taxi or taking a 15-20 minute walk to get into downtown.

Within the cruise port, you'll find a few shops, a post office, and a visitor center.

Note: The Visitors Center was closed when we cruised to Barbados.

Barbados Cruise Port • A Crew Member’s Guide to Bridgetown Barbados

One of the main ports of call for many Caribbean cruise itineraries, Barbados cruise port in the beautiful UNESCO city of Bridgetown is an absolute stunner. As a crew member who has spent a whole lot of time here, I got to know this city a little better than your average cruise passenger. This is my guide to exploring Bridgetown Barbados, whether you have only a day, or over a week, to soak it all in.

A super-speedy history of Barbados

When English settlers first arrived in Barbados in the 1600s, there wasn’t an indigenous person in sight- although there was evidence of the Arawak, and after them, the Kalinago people having lived there many years before. Where had they all gone? Well, thanks to Spanish raiders who regularly kidnapped the locals to be used as slaves, the locals fled Barbados in search of safer shores. An old bridge crossing the Careenage river was discovered by the English, and the new English colony eventually became known as Bridgetown.

The new town consisted of narrow winding alleys like the hither-and-thither streets of England’s market towns, and grand colonial architecture. It was all rather majestic. And then, there were the plantations. At first, indentured servants from England and Ireland (known as ‘Redlegs’ thanks to their severely sunburnt skin), were brought to farm the new plantations across Barbados- but the planters needed more manpower. Hundreds of thousands of African slaves were shipped to Barbados and forced to work on the plantations under brutal conditions, and sugar and tobacco was exported across the Atlantic to Europe- making Bridgetown an important trade hub for the British Empire. As the first British colony to rely so heavily on, and grow so quickly from, slavery, Barbados is considered to be the birthplace of the British slavery system.

In 1966 Barbados was declared an independent nation, although as a Commonwealth realm Queen Elizabeth II was still officially head of state- and Queen of Barbados. (Fancy.) At long last in 2021, the island nation officially transitioned to a Commonwealth republic, meaning in simplified terms that although they’re still a part of the Commonwealth, Barbados have abolished the monarchy completely, and now have a President as head of state.

(For US readers who aren’t entirely sure what I’m jabbering on about- the Commonwealth is an association of nations which were, mostly, once part of the British Empire. Like neighbouring Antigua and Barbuda and Grenada , or the much larger nations of Canada and Australia.)

These days the culture of Barbados is a blend of Afro-Caribbean and British, thanks to over 300 years of British rule, over a group of people who were almost entirely from West Africa.

Where is Barbados Cruise Port?

Barbados cruise port is about a mile away from the centre of Bridgetown, in Deep Water Harbour . The walk into town normally takes about half an hour, and its quite a nice stroll along the waterfront and along the boardwalk; add on an extra ten minutes to get to the beach.

Of course, you might not fancy a sweltering hot walk in the middle of the day (it really can get humid beyond belief here, to the point that it feels as if the air itself is sweating), and I also wouldn’t recommend walking after dark. There’s a taxi rank within the gates of Barbados cruise port, and you’ll also find more taxis waiting outside. If you’d rather pre-book something, here’s a shuttle service to Carlisle Bay which includes entrance to a beach club.

If you’re arriving at the airport and making your way to Barbados cruise terminal, it’ll take around half an hour in a taxi. Book an airport transfer here.

Facilities at Barbados Cruise Port

This is one well-equipped ship parking-spot. And so it should be, considering Barbados cruise port can hold six gargantuan cruise liners.

The main terminal is filled to the brim with shops selling souvenirs, clothes, and all the usual duty-free fare, as well as wooden carts selling food and handmade products. There’s also a post office at the exit of the building. Outside there are a few open-air bars and more souvenir shops.

Barbados Cruise Port does have wifi, however at the time of writing (2023) this wasn’t always reliable. If you’re cruising around the Caribbean and want to use data in several different countries, an easy solution is to use an eSIM from Airalo ; their Caribbean eSIM works in 24 different Caribbean countries, and can be loaded onto your phone via an app.

Before you venture out of Barbados Cruise Port:

My boyfriend was stopped by a policeman as he left the ship one day, because he’d make the error of wearing camouflage shorts. In Barbados, it’s illegal for anyone other than members of the Barbados Defence Force to wear camouflage clothing; as far as they’re concerned, wear camo-print and you’re basically impersonating an officer. That goes for children, too.

Other Caribbean nations where it’s against the law to wear camouflage are Antigua and Barbuda , Bahamas, Dominica , Grenada , Jamaica , St Lucia , St Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago.

So, maybe leave the camouflage at home.

The Best Things to Do in Barbados Cruise Port

Explore the unesco city of bridgetown.

Bridgetown really does have some beautiful architecture, plenty of which is English in shape and structure but Caribbean in its pops of colour. Warehouses, churches and other buildings in the centre of the city wouldn’t look out of place in one of the UK’s industrially revolutionised cities like Nottingham or Sheffield- if it weren’t for the more cheerful colour-palette of this tropical city. Bridgetown’s historic centre is also very well-maintained, which is a bit of a contrast to other Caribbean cities like Basseterre or St Georges which are pretty but much more weathered in appearance.

Important buildings include the neo-Gothic Parliament Buildings at National Heroes Square, and the beautiful St Michael’s Cathedral . The Nidhe Israel Synagogue is a stunning pink building built in 1833 to replace the original synagogue built in 1654 by Sephardic Jews who had emigrated from Spain and Portugal, to Brazil, and eventually over to Barbados.

If you’re feeling inspired to get your learning cap on, you might want to head off on a walking tour of Bridgetown. This tour is super popular and gives a full history of the area as well as including several food stops (what is life without food pals, especially when you’re exploring somewhere new?). If you’re not feeling peckish, this two hour walking tour cuts out the food stops but includes more points of interest which you might not be able to learn about on your own.

My favourite building in all of Brigetown!

Completely off-topic of these grand old and very well-looked after buildings, my favourite structure in the whole of Bridgetown is an incredible and very much falling-down abandoned theatre near St Michael’s Cathedral. The Empire Theatre was built in 1922, and later became a cinema owned by the British Colonial Film Exchange, and even in its crumbling, wire-fenced-off state, it is absolutely stunning. There’s talk of restoring the building, but having been left to erode since the 1970s this would be one very large repair job.

(In case you hadn’t already realised, I love an abandoned building. Check out this abandoned hotel I explored in the Azores.)

Swim with turtles at Carlisle Bay

Carlisle Bay is absolutely stunning, in fact the water is so crystal clear here that I can’t think of anywhere else in the world that beats it. (And I’ve been to a fair few beaches, let’s face it.) If you have the energy, you can walk from Barbados Cruise Port to Carlisle Bay in about 40 minutes; otherwise it’s a ten minute taxi ride.

The crescent bay is long and downright beautiful, with a stretch of pure white sand curving around the perfectly turquoise sea. There are plenty of beach clubs along the beach, and although they all charge for entry or at the very least just for use of a sun lounger and umbrella, the beach is completely public. You’re free to walk from end to end, and you by no means have to pay for a sun lounger if you don’t want to. The beach can get busy during the day, but later in the afternoon as the cruise passengers head back to their ships, Carlisle Bay is an even more beautiful place to be.

And once you’re in the water, keep your eyes peeled: there are turtles galore just offshore and they are absolutely downright wonderful. (So maybe bring a snorkel if you want a better glimpse.)

Hang out at the Boatyard Beach Club

A special mention here for the Boatyard Beach Club Barbados , because as a crew member it is my duty to pass on this sacred information. Beach clubs aren’t my normal kind of vibe, but we spent many a fun day down at the Boatyard, and for crew members who are after a relaxed day this beach is actually a great value option.

The beach club has a restaurant and bar, plenty of sun loungers and beach umbrellas, some rather fun inflatable water slides and trampolines in the sea, a rope swing and some downright 5* wifi. They also offer boat excursions to see the turtles, and a free shuttle back to the cruise terminal.

The Boatyard Barbados day pass price for passengers is $35USD and includes use of a sun lounger and umbrella, a welcome drink, a boat trip to see the turtles, and the shuttle back to the ship. Food and drinks are not included in your day pass.

The Boatyard Barbados day pass price for crew members is only $30USD but works a little differently. The entrance fee is loaded onto a card, which is then redeemable against any food or drinks you buy; and anything you don’t spend is carried over for the next time you visit. If you want to join a boat tour you’ll have to pay a little extra, but the sun loungers and shuttle back to the cruise port are also included in the day pass price for crew.

However, a word of warning: the Boatyard is a popular spot, and on busy port days it fills up fast. Once the beach club reaches full capacity, there is a cut off and they stop letting people in (although sometimes they make an exception for crew members.) Even with a limit on numbers, the kitchen can struggle to keep up with the orders, so if you know you’re going to eat, order early and be prepared to wait.

Get Fancy at Lobster Alive

We walked past Lobster Alive almost every time we were docked at Barbados Cruise Port, and on our final day, starving hungry and denied entry from the at-capacity Boatyard, we decided it was time to visit. Up until that point, I’d actually been more intrigued by the strains of live jazz music which sometimes drifted on the wind out of the restaurant at sunset, than by the promise of fresh lobster. In fact, I’d never actually eaten lobster, so on that point I had no idea what to expect.

This beachfront restaurant is in a pastel blue building with a silhouetted orange lobster painted above its verandah, and as well as the tables inside there’s a beautiful seating area right in the sand on the beach, shaded from the sun with a chorus of umbrellas. The owner flies his little private airplane back and forth to the Grenadines a couple of times a week, to collect lobster and fly them back to Barbados- where they’re served fresh on a plate to customers of Lobster Alive. (Which explains the price).

Our lobster was delicious, and the setting in the sand was beautiful. This may well have been the most expensive meal I’ve ever eaten in my entire living history, but it was also one of the most memorable.

Best excursions from Barbados Cruise Port

If you have time, there are plenty of beautiful places you can visit outside of Barbados cruise port.

St Nicholas’ Abbey is an Jacobean mansion built in 1658, on a sugar plantation. As the sugar industry began to decline, the plantation transitioned to produce rum, and the rum distillery continues to operate today. A visit to the house and grounds is a great way to learn about Barbados’ past; and aside from that, it’s downright beautiful. Book a tour to St Nicholas Abbey here.

Bathsheba Beach is a rugged and breathtakingly beautiful beach, away from the bustle of the city on Barbados’ east coast. Although the scenery is stunning, this is not a place to swim; the Atlantic waves are super-powerful. Instead, go to the Bathsheba Pools which are natural inshore pools where there’s no danger of the current pulling you away. If you don’t fancy a taxi, t’s possible to get from Bridgetown to Bathsheba by public bus; take the number 6 bus from the Princess Alice Bus Terminal, and the journey will take about 45 minutes.

Animal Flower Cave is a magical spot underneath the cliffs at North Point in St Lucy, named after the sea anemones you can find outside- known locally as ‘Animal Flowers’ which is a much cuter name in my opinion. On a calm day it’s possible to swim inside the cave (which is deceptively deep), or just view the rough Atlantic seas from inside, with the cave walls forming a natural picture frame. This is a brilliant tour which encompasses all sides of life in Barbados , with stops at Animal Flower Cave and Bathsheba, as well as Rihanna’s childhood home, and the very first English settlement at Holetown.
