Visuals are more dazzling than the storytelling in “ Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons.” A qualified return to form for Hong Kong hitmaker Stephen Chow (“Kung Fu Hustle) after mushy sci-fier “CJ7,” this mostly entertaining action-fantasy-comedy about a demon hunter soars when pyrotechnics take centerstage, but is less successful when the focus switches to words. Nevertheless, “Journey” has gone bananas since its Feb. 7 domestic release and looks certain to crack the $200 million mark and overtake “ Lost in Thailand ” as the highest grossing Chinese movie. Commercial potential beyond Chinese-speaking auds appears limited. North American release details are pending.

The pic is the umpteenth movie inspired by Wu Cheng-en’s classic 16th century novel “Journey to the West.” The source material about the arrival of Buddhism in China provided the basis for “A Chinese Odyssey Part One: Pandora’s Box” and “A Chinese Odyssey Part Two: Cinderella,” domestic hits starring Chow as the mischievous Monkey King .

With Derek Kwok (“Gallants”) credited as associate director, “Journey” follows a simple pattern of elaborate set-pieces followed by brief pauses for reflection and explanation, not all of which are entirely compelling or convincing.

The first spectacular sequence shows young demon hunter Xuanzang (Wen Zhang) arriving in a fishing village during a gory, “Jaws”-like attack by the fearsome Water Demon. Chow’s knack for mixing suspense and slapstick is impressively displayed as Xuanzang leaps about rickety walkways and see-sawing bridges resembling the board game “Mouse Trap” before rescuing a baby just inches from becoming the creature’s next meal.

In one of several new ideas brought to the old tale by Chow, Kwok and six other credited writers, sensitive Xuanzang reads nursery rhymes to demons in the hope they will reject the dark side and join him as allies in the quest for spiritual enlightenment. His belief is that these beasties were once good-natured humans that suffered terrible injustice, and a lilting lullaby is all it takes to undo the damage. Watched by villagers as his technique restores the Water Demon to his previous human form as Sand Monk (Lee Sheung-ching), Xuanzang’s moment of glory is stolen by the sudden arrival of Duan ( Shu Qi , “If You Are the One”), a feisty femme demon hunter with radically different ideas on creature control and a flair for showbiz that the nerdy Xuanzang lacks.

Duan invites herself on Xuanzang’s missions to challenge and change other demons — pig K.L. Hog (Chen Bing-qiang) and Sun Wukong, also known as the Monkey King (Huang Bo), an especially tricky customer who’s served 500 years of solitary confinement in a remote cave on orders from Buddha himself. While sequences such as Duan using her “Infinite Flying Rings” to disintegrate Hog’s minions at his restaurant-cum slaughterhouse are filled with razzle-dazzle CGI and exciting 3D effects, talk-based segs between showpieces too often lack the nimble scripting and heartwarming charm that distinguishes Chow’s best work, like 2001’s “Shaolin Soccer.”

The main problem is Duan’s wildly enthusiastic attempts to woo Xuanzang despite his avowed devotion to “a greater love” than what she’s offering. Pushing the opposites-attract notion a bit too far, Duan’s repeated declarations of passion for Xuanzang never ring true, and it remains a mystery why she finds him so irresistible. An early sequence showing Duan and her sexy comrade (Chrissie Chau) conspiring to activate Xuanzang’s libido produces chuckles, but variations on the theme prove far less mirthful.

Although Chow does not appear in the movie, his acting style and screen persona are writ large on the main cast. Shu is dynamite as the all-action Duan, Huang amuses as the eccentric Monkey King, and Taiwanese singer Show Lo scores big laughs as Prince Important, a narcissistic rival demon hunter with an entourage of soon-to-be-superannuated female sidekicks.

Where the helmer’s touch works least is the central role of Xuanzang. Mainland thesp Wen does nothing particularly wrong, but his perf as the nervous greenhorn feels Chow-lite, and his narrowly written character is less lovable than he ought to be. It doesn’t help that Wen sports a ghastly “finger-in-the-light-socket” hairdo more fit for a costume party than a serious young seeker of spiritual fulfillment.

The pic is beautifully designed and photographed in predominantly rich earthy tones by lenser Choi Sung-fai (“ Flying Swords of Dragon Gate”). The orchestral score by regular Chow collaborator Raymond Wong adds plenty of punch to action sequences, but is slightly overused in the dramatic passages. The rest of the technical work is first class. Things conclude with a set-up for a sequel.

By turns daffy and dazzling, awkward and artful, "Journey to the West" takes an ancient tale and gives it contemporary flair.

In adapting one of the Four Great Classical Novels of 16th-century Chinese literature, co-directors Stephen Chow and Derek Kwok have crafted a rollicking fantasy—a crazy fable that ultimately reaffirms the power of faith. Their giant martial-arts set pieces are nothing short of extraordinary; lively and lovely, they're filled with both great intricacy and innovation.

These scenes, which can be both wildly slapsticky and minutely graceful, provide the film with a winning, driving energy. And then when they're over, the characters unfortunately have to talk.

"Journey to the West" follows a goofy but sincere Buddhist monk named Xuan Zang ( Zhang Wen ), a young demon hunter who must vanquish a series of foes en route to his ultimate showdown with the notorious, shape-shifting Monkey King ( Bo Huang ). When we first see him, in the film's lengthy, tour-de-force opening sequence, he's helping a bunch of frightened villagers take down a giant, hungry fish that's leaping from the water and wreaking havoc. The comedy has a Mel Brooks-like sensibility about it that's appealing; it's playful in a deadly-serious situation. (Chow also directed the pleasingly cartoonish " Shaolin Soccer " and " Kung Fu Hustle .") But the choreography is undeniable: a breathtaking series of near misses and tricky balancing acts.

Xuan's preferred, absurd method of attack, per his mentor, is to tame the beasts by singing lullabies to them from a book called "300 Nursery Rhymes." The sweetness and innocence within Zhang's performance feels very Keanu Reeves circa "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure," complete with a mop of wild hair. This is actually a compliment.

The rival demon hunter he keeps running into, a catlike creature known as Miss Duan ( Qi Shu ), favors a more direct strategy: She takes them on through balletic physical battles with the help of a magical golden bracelet—"The Infinite Flying Ring"—which she can duplicate countless times. As she flings the circles through the air like lethal boomerangs, her targets explode in a burst of dust. It's an awesome sight to behold.

But then "Journey to the West" has an episodic structure that saps it of much of the momentum it gains during those thrilling set pieces. Xuan and Duan have one adventure, then another, than another. They meet one eccentric character, then another, then another. There's a tiger demon and a pig demon. There's a preening royal known as Prince Important (clearly a friend of President Business from " The Lego Movie ") and an elderly man known as the Almighty Foot, whose shriveled limb expands to an enormous size when the time comes for him to stomp on his enemies. (He might have the best catch phrase ever: "Today, you will die by my almighty foot!")

Along the way, Xuan and Duan trade some stilted and truly cringe-worthy dialogue—initially about their conflicting strategies, eventually about the half-hearted romance that develops between them. Out of nowhere, Duan finds herself falling hard for her unlikely companion and throwing herself at him in increasingly elaborate ways.

Maybe it's written that way on the page, but on the screen—especially in a film that benefits from such a strong and fearless female—the sudden need to have a man define her is a disheartening cliché. Also, some of the interactions between the male characters carry more than a whiff of homophobia which seems archaic. Again, maybe that's from the source material. But a film that clearly went out of its way to appeal to modern audiences perhaps could have gone just a tiny bit further.

While the fresh take is beholden to the classic folk tale in many ways, it incorporates new elements such as anthropomorphizing Monkey's magical stick and introducing a young human named Lin (Jolie Hoang-Rappaport) as part of the adventure.

The Monkey King is directed by Anthony Stacchi ( The Boxtrolls , Open Season ) and executive produced by none other than Stephen Chow of Kung Fu Hustle fame. Peilin Chou, who produced Abominable and Over the Moon , also serves as producer and has spent several years bringing the delightful tale of Monkey to life. The star-studded all-Asian cast also includes Bowen Yang as Dragon King, Joy Koy as Benbo, BD Wong as Buddha, Andrew Pang as Mayor, and Stephanie Hsu as Mayor's Wife.

Screen Rant spoke to Stacchi and Chou about the process of making The Monkey King , which took nearly a decade from inception to execution. The creative team detailed how their adaptation of Journey to the West stands out from previous ones, which aspects of Monkey they felt had to be preserved, and how they landed on the talented voice cast for the movie.

Anthony Stacchi & Peilin Chou Talk The Monkey King

Screen Rant: Peilin what inspired you to adapt the story of The Monkey King for Netflix?

Peilin Chou: The Monkey King is a long-beloved character and tale, and I grew up with it myself in my family. It's been a really meaningful story, and also now I have two boys who grew up with it, so it's continued on. Growing up, I would be super excited talking about Monkey King at school, and most people's reaction was, "What are you talking about?" So, I have long wanted to have a definitive Monkey King for global audiences. I think that, even though he's been explored so many times, there's not a definitive version that is a global version of Monkey King – especially in animated form. That's why a partnership with Netflix was so particularly exciting because Netflix is obviously in homes all around the globe in a way that pretty much no other platform is. I jumped at the opportunity to be able to create this version.

Anthony, The Monkey King is such a beloved character in Chinese literature and mythology. How did you approach the challenge of bringing the iconic character to life onscreen?

Anthony Stacchi: We always used the original folk tale as the source material and as a jumping-off point, especially since we definitely wanted to introduce it to the world as an origin story, so you find out who he was. I love Hong Kong movies, and you can't watch a lot of Hong Kong movies without being like, "Who is this monkey guy and this pig guy? What is this stuff?" I read the original folk tale about 20 years ago and always hoped to work on a Monkey King movie at some point. The more you delve into it, Monkey's a really distinctive character; he’s the original superhero, the original anti-hero, and the original rebellious, anti-authoritarian jerk. His character is the appeal of the whole thing. We’re retaining that, keeping it authentic, and making sure that we didn't compromise that personality – even though it doesn't neatly fit into a Western animated family movie structure, where a character goes from good to better. Or goes from good but with a little bit of a problem to getting their dream. Peilin Chou: [He doesn't learn] very important lessons along the way [or transform] into a whole different kind of person by the end. Anthony Stacchi: That's not Monkey's story. It's a spiritual journey where he goes from being the ultimate, arrogant, vain jerk to an enlightened being – but this is the first seven chapters and the first step on that journey. In keeping it that way, Peilin brought Stephen Chow into the process as the protector of not only the authenticity of the Monkey from the original folk tale but also what Monkey means to people in the modern world. Stephen Chow was not that concerned with the original folk tale, but he knew Monkey. He would tell you, “Monkey wouldn't do that. Monkey would do this. Monkey needs to be meaner, but he's still the hero.” We still look at him as the hero, even though he says stuff that is very ephemeral and hard to grasp, which is why the process took eight years for Peilin and four years for me.

Peilin, what elements of the original story did you prioritize in the adaptation and how did you modernize or reinvent certain aspects of it?

Peilin Chou: One thing we were most protective of was Monkey as a character. Because he doesn't really fit into the mold of a typical Western superhero film in terms of the journey, it was about how we were going to be able to preserve that and tell a story. Structurally, it’s not linear the way that Western films usually are – but it’s still exciting, appealing, and relatable. That was probably the number one thing that we were looking to preserve. Also, Journey to the West is really a spiritual story, and we were looking for ways to integrate those spiritual elements into the film in a way that remained true to the authentic spirit of the story, but without being confusing or off-putting. I think those were the two things that we were most consciously aware of the entire time. One of the things that is wholly original to our film is the character of Lin. She's not in the Journey to the West novel, and we often refer to our film as The Lost Chapter of Journey to the West. It's the time that Monkey met Lin and temporarily lost his stick that you've never heard about before, which we thought was a cool way to bring something original, fresh, and exciting. Even if you grew up with the novel, it would be something you had obviously never experienced before. We really liked Lin as a character – she’s this strong female character, and Monkey is finally meeting his match in a way. We also felt that, as a character, she's able to be an entry point into the film for those not familiar with Monkey King. She really served a lot of purposes. Another element that we think is unique and feels contemporary and fresh is anthropomorphizing Stick as a character, which – as far as Tony and I know – has never been done in any other adaptation. Really leaning into that, particularly in the medium of animation, seemed like a natural thing to do. We had so much fun writing that relationship with Monkey and figuring out the exact right way to voice that character and give that character a personality. All of that is really fresh and new to the way that we approached it. Anthony Stacchi: Yeah, we talked a lot about how to animate Stick. It's this incredibly powerful iron pole, and it can change size; it can become tiny and go behind Monkey's ear, or get as big as the Eiffel Tower. We knew that it wouldn’t feel right as a wet noodle that’s too wobbly in its performance. If you think about the carpet in Aladdin and stuff, it gets a lot of performance out of, “I'm excited,” “I’m sad,” and stuff. We knew we wouldn't have those elements for performance, so we talked about the different colors that come with different emotions when he's excited or in the midst of a battle and stuff. The most difficult part was finding a voice for him because we knew we wanted him to talk. We went to see a lot of different sound designers, and we tried every kind of mechanical design. We ran marbles in a hollow pole, and we tried to invent languages for him and to use voice people so he sounded like a robot or an alien. It sounded very Star Wars, like a talking lightsaber – and we just couldn't do it. Even Netflix said, “It doesn't have the gravitas it needs.” This is an ancient weapon; the most powerful weapon. It was used to measure the oceans and to pound the universe into elements, so it took us a long time to figure it out. It wasn't until we were talking to Toby Chu, our composer for the soundtrack, that we found it. “In this whole repertoire of sounds that you have, what do you think Stick should sound like?" And he was like, "To be honest, I've always imagined Stick would sound like a grumpy old Chinese man," which made us laugh really hard. He's got to put up with this obnoxious Monkey guy who's constantly barking orders at him, and he has to listen to whatever Monkey says, which is part of the folk tale. That made us really laugh, that that was really great. Then we were talking to Nan Li, the lead singer of Voodoo Kungfu, who does Monkey's theme song in the movie. He does that Tuvan Mongolian throat singing, so he goes, "What about this?" And he just started making some performative voices for happy, sad, exasperated sounds in his throat. It was so obvious when Nan suggested it. Stick is a little bit wiser than Monkey, and we associate the Tuvan throat singing with Buddha and spirituality in the movie. The fact that it would be coming from Stick made sense, but we'd been dancing around it for years. It just took Nan in that one Zoom call, and Toby's idea, to connect it all together.

That is such a cool story. Anthony, the animation style in The Monkey King is visually stunning. Can you share some of the insight into the artistic choices made during the production and how that contributed to the overall storytelling?

Anthony Stacchi: Initially, when we talked about Monkey's design, we wanted a unique design for animation. Often in live-action movies, he is a man in monkey makeup, so it has a too-human vibe. We wanted our Monkey to look like a monkey. We wanted him to be inspired by the face makeup in Peking opera, which we love. It's so striking and makes the performance so clear. The face is simplified, so when he makes different fierce expressions or surprised expressions, they're that times ten. Then we reached out to James Baxter, who's a really famous 2D animator that's worked on a lot of classic films. He works at Netflix now as an animation guide, and he gave us a couple of lectures on how monkeys move. We knew Monkey would move like an arrogant human person, and our animation supervisors talked about that a lot with the animators. James talked about integrating certain monkey movements for him too, so we talked about how macaques move and stuff; how they walk on their hands or they use their knuckles, and how their head goes into their spine and stuff. Emotionally, he would start as a baby and move more like a monkey. But then as he became and stood up more, he moved more like an arrogant person. At that point, we were left with how he moves when he's fighting, when he's doing martial arts, and when he's using these superhero powers. We storyboarded a few sequences and showed him to Stephen Chow, and he introduced us to a martial arts fight choreographer named Siwei Zhou. He’s an amazingly talented young man who not only does martial arts choreography for live-action movies and has worked with Stephen Chow and other filmmakers, but he does Peking opera, so he knows how to do this posing of Monkey which is incredibly theatrical. It just adds to the level of arrogance of Monkey. Peilin Chou: And he's a 2D animator. He's a true Renaissance man. Anthony Stacchi: He would take our storyboard and sequences and draw over the top of them and push the poses so they were more authentic in a martial arts sense, but they were also full of the arrogance he might use if he was playing Monkey King in a Peking opera. We would storyboard it with all the story points during the fighting sequences – like, Monkey and Stick are fighting together now, or they're arguing in the middle of the fight – and e would keep all those story beats but take the fighting to a whole other level and make it much more dynamic.

Peilin, Monkey King is deeply rooted in Chinese culture. Were there any specific cultural elements or themes that you wanted to highlight? How do you approach incorporating them into the film?

Peilin Chou: I don't know that there are specific Chinese themes. We really set out to make it thematically, universally relatable. Certainly, the notion of not being the center of the universe and focusing on a larger viewpoint and community is very Chinese in some regard. But my favorite theme in the film really comes from the character of Lin and this notion of writing your own scroll, and how important and profoundly impactful that can be. I love this lesson that your life is not predetermined and the choices you make – or the things that you say and do, and the stories that you tell – can really have a profound impact on you and your community. I really hope that when people leave the film, they might be inspired to go out and make those choices they've been debating, or to share their own stories in a way that can be really meaningful and powerful.

Anthony, Monkey King is known for his mischievous and playful nature. How did you ensure that his personality and charm were effectively portrayed in this animated film?

Anthony Stacchi: That's something that's totally present in the original folk tale and makes it feel really modern. Our story guru Stephen Chow is very well acquainted with that type of anti-hero character, which you can see in a lot of his films, and I think that working with Netflix allowed us to make a character who didn't fit into the mold of other animated films. The biggest problem that came along was finding a voice and a performance for it so that you'd stick with Monkey for the whole movie – because he's very unlikable. He's very mean to Lin in different parts. Jimmy O. Yang's performance was charming. He's still the hero; he's still the guy that can't take your eyes off, no matter how much of an arrogant, selfish, and vain character he is. I think that there's a brightness and an adolescent, mischievous quality to Jimmy O. Yang's performance that made it work. We played with other voices and listened to it, and with some voices, you're like, "No, I don't like this guy." He's saying the same lines, he's doing the same things, but it wasn't working. Jimmy's performance really made it palatable and allowed us to push his obnoxious side even further than we could have.

You have such an amazing voice cast in The Monkey King . Can you talk about the casting process and how the actors brought these characters to life?

Peilin Chou: We are so thrilled and so proud of our cast. I agree with you; I think they really brought these characters to life in such a dynamic way. They are not easy characters to voice because some of them are fantastical, and a lot of them have a lot of different layers. I think Monkey King is a particularly complex character to voice. Jimmy O. Yang does it beautifully. It is a character that is arrogant, narcissistic, and obnoxious – but you have to really love him and still root for him throughout the film. In order to do that, I think there has to be such pathos in the obnoxiousness, and Jimmy is just so brilliant about how he's able to strike that exact balance. I think that the sensibility of his standup material has that spirit in it, and so I think that's what made us feel that he might be able to achieve it. He did a really incredible job; it seems very casual and easy, but there's actually so much nuance to what he's doing and the choices that he's making in terms of how he embodies the character. We worked with Micah Dahlberg, who was our casting director, and he was really an integral voice in the conversation of casting this film. We were really thrilled to assemble an all-Asian cast, which I feel like I could talk about for an hour, but I won't. Bowen Yang as Dragon King; we learned when we first met him that it actually was a lifelong dream of his to voice an animated villain. In his youth, he said he would reenact famous animated villain death scenes in his room on his bed. He was so excited to play the Dragon King, because the Monkey King was a story that he grew up with and knew. Of course, we have the Academy Award-nominated Stephanie Hsu, who plays a role very near and dear to us, the Mayor's Wife. It is a direct homage to Stephen Chow and a character that's in Kung Fu Hustle, one of the most beloved films that he has directed. Jo Koy and Ron Yuan are Dragon King's henchmen, competing for who can be stupider and doing it with such art and flair. And of course, BD Wong is Buddha. If you're going to find someone to voice Buddha, how could it not be BD Wong? We feel so lucky with how it all came together. Anthony Stacchi: Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, who wrote the Dragon King song, were huge fans of Bowen Yang. We didn’t know if he could sing or not, but he's an amazing singer. Jo and Ron had to sing too; the Bumblebee song. I never would've predicted that. At every step of the way, you just threw another hurdle and people jumped. And Jolie [Hoang-Rappaport, who plays Lin,] was a revelation. She grew up making the movie. We started recording her in her closet surrounded by her stuffed animals during COVID. She would climb into her closet, shut the door, light a little lamp in the corner, and record her original lines – some of which are still in the movie. She was a little kid, and now she's going off to college.

Are there any future plans for sequels or a series?

Anthony Stacchi: Do you know who those three guys are at the end of the movie? Don't give that away. That's our little hope. Peilin Chou: Spoilers! But that’s not a decision we get to make. I will say we definitely set it up so that it's possible, and Journey to The West is a 100-chapter novel, of which this movie only covers the first seven. I would say we have plenty of source material to draw from for future storytelling. Anthony Stacchi: One thing I really love is that when they asked Stephen Chow who his favorite character was in the movie, he said it was Lin. He just loved the idea of a normal person going on this adventure to all these other worlds and all these situations. I always knew the source material was wonderful, and you couldn't go wrong with the story, but Lin's story grew to be so complex and such a big part of it. And we found such a wonderful actress to do her voice, so I hope that young girls find her inspiring.

‘Monkey Man’ Comes to Digital, But When Will ‘Monkey Man’ Be Streaming on Peacock?

After just over two weeks in theaters, Dev Patel’s Monkey Man is coming to video-on-demand.

Directed by Patel—who also stars in the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Paul Angunawela and John Collee— Monkey Man has been dubbed “the Indian John Wick .” Patel stars as the Monkey Man himself, aka a fighter known for wearing a monkey box at an underground boxing club in Mumbai. The Monkey Man gets paid to lose, but after some bad guys try to kill him, he starts fighting to win—and to survive.

Critics liked Monkey Man , and in its two weeks in theaters so far, the movie has earned nearly $23 million at the worldwide box office—not a runaway success, but solid. So is it surprising that Universal pushed the film to digital after just two weeks?

Not really. Although two weeks is on the short side for a theatrical run, most studio films these days are only exclusive to theaters for 45 days or less, and Universal has had a particularly quick turnaround time. Most big Universal movies, including   The Exorcist: Believer and Night Swim , hit digital after two weeks in theaters. Monkey Man , apparently, will not be an exception.

Here’s what you should know about how to watch  Monkey Man  online, and when to expect to see  Monkey Man   streaming on Peacock.

Monkey Man digital release date:

Beginning on Tuesday, April 23,  Monkey Man will be available to buy and rent digitally on  Amazon Prime , Google Play,  Apple TV,   Vudu , and more. The price may vary depending on which platform you use to purchase the film, but on Amazon Prime the film costs $24.99 to buy a digital copy.

How to rent  Monkey Man  online:

Monkey Man   will be available to rent on digital platforms like  Amazon Prime , Google Play,  Apple TV ,  Vudu , and more, beginning on April 23. The movie will cost $19.99 to rent, and you’ll have 48 hours to watch the movie after hitting “play.”

When will  Monkey Man  be streaming on Peacock?

The   Monkey Man   streaming release date on Peacock has not yet been announced, but we know that  Monkey Man  will be on Peacock eventually because it is a Universal movie, and Peacock is the streaming service owned by Universal. All of the new Universal theatrical movies end up streaming on Peacock, though the wait period has varied by title

Another Universal release, Night Swim , was also pushed to VOD after just over two weeks in theaters, and it began streaming on Peacock about four months after opening in theaters (and about 10 weeks after releasing on digital). If  Monkey Man  follows a similar release pattern, you can expect  Monkey Man to stream on Peacock around early July 2024.

This is all speculation, of course. If you want to watch  Monkey Ma  at home right away, you can do so by buying or renting the film on digital beginning tomorrow.

Flying Monkey spared in Saturday fire that guts two nearby buildings on Plymouth’s Main Street

A fire on Main Street in Plymouth Saturday night tore through two empty commercial buildings but left one, the neighboring Flying Monkey Movie House and Performance Center, largely unscathed.

Just after 9 p.m., with a Foreigner-Journey tribute band on stage and a full crowd, concession workers heard a loud bang from outside and, stepping out into the street, saw the flames and pulled the fire alarm, Common Man CEO Vincent Vella said Monday. Alex Ray, who owns the Common Man restaurant chain, also owns the theater.

As Plymouth Fire-Rescue arrived on the scene, large flames rose from the rear of two buildings beside the venue, including one that used to house Downtown Pizza, according to Chief Tom Morrison.

The about 450-person crowd was evacuated from the venue, and looked on as firefighters from 16 departments, according to a news release from Plymouth Fire, arrived at the scene.

Fire teams determined that the buildings had no occupants, and then battled the blaze. The two buildings were both “gutted,” by the fire, Morrison said, but neighboring buildings sustained only smoke and some water damage. The music venue sustained only minor smoke damage and it announced over the weekend that its doors will reopen for a show Friday night.

“We feel very lucky,” Vella said. “The Monkey is an iconic theater in Plymouth. We feel blessed that our staff reacted and got everyone out.”

Originally built as a movie theater in the 1920s, Ray bought, renovated and reopened the venue as the Flying Monkey in 2010, according to its website.

Both of the buildings destroyed in the fire, like the Flying Monkey, are also Ray’s property, according to tax records. Vella said the company is still working with insurance to determine the future of the structures.

“Unfortunately, some of the Monkey’s neighbors have suffered tragic losses, and Main Street in Plymouth will look different for some time,” Vella said in a statement on social media. “We will support them in their efforts to recover.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Following two sold-out limited seasons at London’s Barbican, the Royal Shakespeare Company ’s acclaimed stage version of Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli classic   My Neighbour Totoro  will transfer to the West End early in 2025.

The show broke box office records during both its inaugural 15-week term in 2022 and repeated that success on its second iteration, which played for 17 weeks from last November until last month.

Yorke and her RSC colleagues have secured the Gillian Lynne Theatre beginning March 8, 2025 for an initial 34-week period through November 2, 2025.

In a sense, the move to the Gilly Lynne — how some affectionately refer to the theatre named for legendary  Cats  and  Phantom of the Opera  choreographer, the late Dame Gillian Lynne — moves  My Neighbour Totoro , adapted by Tom Morton-Smith, all the more closer to Broadway .

While confidently predicting that  My Neighbour Totoro  “will definitely have a life beyond the West End,” Yorke swatted away further questions. “With our Japanese partners we want to focus on nailing that West End transfer before we cast our eye further afield,” she reasoned.

However, with a twinkle in her eye, Yorke acknowledged that “there’s a lot of interest.”

Her observations were echoed by two of the show’s creative collaborators, its director Phelim McDermott, co-founder and co-artistic director of the pioneering Improbable improvisational theatre company, and puppeteer extraordinaire Basil Twist, who created the life-size puppet of fluffy Totoro.

McDermott cautioned that his journey around shows has proved that “sometimes a show that works really well and you go to the next stage … you’ve got to keep the pot that is happening in just the right size for the process to keep the soup good.”

He added that if “you start thinking ‘we’ve got to do this, we’ve got to do that,’ too soon, then you take your eye off keeping the soup good.”

Yorke leaves the RSC in late June to take up the post of Producer at the Old Vic. However, she’s being allowed to continue her executive producing duties overseeing My Neighbour Totoro  for the RSC.

The Gillian Lynne’s in the same Covent Garden neighbourhood as the  Matilda  musical at the Cambridge Theatre, another RSC production and still running after premiering at the RSC’s Stratford-upon-Avon base in 2010.

Both houses, by the way, are controlled by Andrew Lloyd Webber’s LW Theatres company.

Of course, no one knows if My Neighbour Totoro will enjoy that kind of run!

Data collated by the RSC shows that the show has attracted huge family audiences, many visiting from Japan; film fans; and in what has cheered the RSC no end the enormous interest from anime and games geeks. And some folk are seeing it more than once.

Twist talked of watching audiences. He can always tell if they’re fans of the movie because they sit up straight and lean forward during moments in the story when they anticipate Totoro making an appearance. “They know something’s going to happen,” Twist said.

I know this to be true. I’m a supposedly grown-up man but I became ridiculously excited when I knew that Totoro would be making his entrance.

The RSC has ensured that, thus far, no one has put out a photo of Totoro on social media, and the RSC is not releasing any because they don’t want to spoil the surprise for new audiences.  

The 1988 film gained in popularity during the pandemic when Netflix, rather astutely, acquired streaming rights to Studio Ghibli’s catalog. Untold millions watched the movies — including  My Neighbour Totoro .

The movie, set in the 1950s, follows the story of sisters Satsuki and Mei, who move with their father from postwar Tokyo to their new home, near a forest. There they discover spirits and magical creatures, the giant fluffy Totoro, and a mammoth cat bus that takes on passengers then takes off into the sky.

At the heart of Dermott’s production, though it achieves amazing technical feats, is the company and how it pulled off what McDermott called “a kind of naive storytelling quality.”

The big challenge about  My Neighbour Totoro’s  continued success, the director noted, is not “to get too overconfident because the piece itself is about childlike vulnerability.”

McDermott spoke from New York, where he’s directing The Hours  at The Met.

He and his colleagues at Improbable have embarked on a capital project to develop creative open spaces on a site owned by the Commonwork Trust in Penshurst, Kent. First task will be to renovate an old house to be known as The Host House, which will feature a communal table for shared experiences downstairs and creative spaces upstairs. ”That’s our next big Improbable project,” McDermott said, chuckling. “We want to make work there, and teach to pass the way of working on,” he explained.

“We just have to raise a few million quid for a space that’s unpressured,” he added.

In the fall of 2025 he’s doing a second opera with Huang, along with librettist David Henry Hwang and director Diane Paulus, at the San Francisco Opera House. It’s  The Monkey King , drawn from an episode in  Journey to the Wes t and the Ming dynasty.

San Francisco is where the Twist family home’s located. It’s where, during the pandemic, he created the prototype puppet for the stage Totoro in his parents’ backyard, and because he wasn’t able to bring in outsiders into the family pod due to the pandemic, his parents, siblings and his brother’s kids helped to photograph and film the result for the show’s Japanese partners at Studio Ghibli and Nippon TV.

“It was one of the many beautiful things about this project,” Twist said, “and even the challenge of doing it during the pandemic, was that I did that with my family, in the family home in the backyard.” 

My Neighbour Totoro  features music by Joe Hisaishi. The show’s presented by Hisaishi and the RSC in collaboration with Improbable and Nippon TV.

My Neighbour Totoro’s  production design is by Tom Pye, costume design by Kimie Nakano, lighting design by Jessica Hung Han Yun and movement by You-Ri Yamanaka. Puppetry design and direction is by Basil Twist. The production features music from Hisaishi’s iconic score in a new orchestration by Will Stuart, performed live with sound design by Tony Gayle. Video design is by Finn Ross and Andrea Scott.

Casting is yet to be announced.
