Biking around Barcelona is incredibly easy! The city’s layout is quite straightforward, and the cycling lanes are clearly marked, ensuring a seamless ride even for first-time visitors. Moreover, Barcelona is reasonably flat, with only a few hilly areas, making it accessible for all fitness levels. 

Barcelona also has a public bike-sharing program known as Bicing, which is perfect for short trips around the city. However, do note that this service is mainly designed for residents, and tourists might need to rely on traditional bike rentals.

Is it safe to cycle in Barcelona?

It’s very safe to cycle in Barcelona! The city takes the safety of cyclists seriously, with separated bike lanes and traffic-calming measures in place throughout the city. Plus, the local culture is respectful towards cyclists, which adds another layer of security. 

Of course, just like anywhere else, it’s important to follow road safety rules, use hand signals, wear a helmet, and stay alert. This includes for pedestrians, who aren’t always perfect at checking for bikes before crossing bike paths

Remember as well that bike theft can be an issue in Barcelona, so always lock up your bike securely when you’re not using it.

Do you have to wear a helmet on a bike in Barcelona?

Legally speaking, helmets are only mandatory for cyclists under 16 years old in urban areas, but they are highly recommended for all riders regardless of age. When you’re biking outside of urban areas and on interurban roads, the law requires that all cyclists wear a helmet. 

Despite the legal aspect, wearing a helmet is always a smart choice as it provides essential protection and can prevent serious injuries in case of an accident. Most bike rental shops in Barcelona will provide you with a helmet when you rent a bike.

Can you bike on La Rambla?

Technically, yes, you can bike on La Rambla, but it’s not recommended due to the heavy pedestrian traffic. La Rambla is one of the busiest pedestrian areas in Barcelona, and navigating it on a bike can be challenging and stressful. 

If you must pass through La Rambla, it’s better to walk your bike through the crowd to avoid accidents. 

There are many other biking-friendly routes nearby that are safer and more enjoyable, such as the beautiful seafront promenade in Barceloneta or the wide avenues of Eixample.

Can you cycle on the pavement in Barcelona?

In Barcelona, cycling on the pavement is generally not allowed unless the pavement is wider than five meters and the pedestrian flow is low. Cyclists are encouraged to use bike lanes and shared spaces instead. 

If the pavement is the only option and it meets the above conditions, cyclists should ride at a walking pace and always give priority to pedestrians.

What Should I Bring?

Nothing too bad will happen if you rock up to a bicycle tour with just the shirt on your back (and some shorts hopefully), but this is what a boy scout would bring, in order to be totally prepared for a few hours in the saddle:

• Sunscreen. Be sure to apply plenty to the back of neck, forearms and face.
• Sunglasses. The light in Barcelona can be oh so bright… you’ll get a headache if you forget these.
• Sensible footwear. Flip flops on bikes are rarely a good idea.
• Bottle of water. You’re going to need to rehydrate, possibly quite regularly if it’s scorchio outside.
• Second layer. Check the weather forecast before you set off, as you might appreciate having a light rain jacket, or sweater, for those times when the legendary local climate lets us down.
• Camera. Probably best not to pack your DSLR… too clunky and not great way to carry it on a bike. But you’ll want to have a camera of some sort handy for when you stop outside one of Gaudi’s masterpieces, a cool piece of street art or are cruising back to the city via the beach. Your phone or a point of shoot should prove perfect.
• Address of the tour meeting point. Because there’s always one who doesn’t…
• Cash. Some pocket change for snacks and souvenirs (some tours stop via cool stores) might come in handy.
• Backpack. I’d recommend a double shoulder strapped bag as these are much more stable when you’re riding a bike.
• Lip balm. The Barcelona Life team have very sensitive lips, ok!?

I am blind and we require a tandem bike to rent. Are there Tandem bikes available to rent?

Hi Teresa, yes it looks like several bike rental firms have them. Just doing a Google now for you and it seems Happy Rental Bike have them for example: https://happyrentalbike.com/barcelona/tandem-bike-rental/

Could you recommend a route if we wanted to do a free-wheel bike tour of these places? And are there places to lock your bikes if we want to go inside somewhere?

One advantage of a bike tour is the guide usually knows the best bike paths etc. to get around, but it is also fun to go free-wheeling. Specific routes I don’t have saved, but I’d try to get out of the Old Town that is bit too crowded with pedestrians to be comfortable for bikes. Poblenou is nice for cycling, although there are fewer obvious sights to see. Eixample is good if you stick to the bike paths and avoid the traffic.
