Batumi named Europe’s leading emerging destination at World Travel Awards

batumi world travel awards

Georgia’s Black Sea city of Batumi has been named Europe’s Leading Emerging Tourism Destination at the World Travel Awards (WTA).

At a ceremony held in Madeira, Portugal, Batumi beat off competition from Baku (Azerbaijan), Derry (North Ireland), Kutná Hora (Czech Republic), Ljubljana (Slovenia), Matera (Italy), Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Sofia (Bulgaria).

Tornike Rijvadze, the chairman of the government of the Autonomous Region of Ajara, in which Batumi is located, said that he believes the award will contribute to increased awareness of Batumi worldwide.

With an enviable sub-tropical climate Batumi offers a wide range of attractions, not least its botanical gardens which are the largest anywhere in the world outside of the United States.

Batumi, whose skyscrapers are testament to the huge amount of investment the city has received in recent years, also boats many casinos, which are popular with visitors from neighbouring countries where gambling is illegal.

Batumi to Host ‘World Travel Awards’ in 2023

Batumi to Host ‘World Travel Awards’ in 2023

One of the most authoritative awarding ceremonies, the World Travel Awards, is to be held in Batumi in 2023.

Adjara will host the European Gala, an event known as the “World Tourism Oscar,” which will see leading companies of the global tourism industry, hotels, travel agencies, representatives of business and state organizations, as well as international media, coming to Batumi within the framework of the event.

“Holding the World Tourism Awards in Batumi is a serious statement on the world tourist map that Batumi is a reliable, interesting, and diverse tourist destination. Of course, it is also a unique opportunity to introduce the investment-tourism opportunities of our region to more than a million people involved in the tourism industry and representatives of more than 190 countries. At the same time, it is a dignified and proud restart of tourism after the pandemic,” said Tinatin Zoidze, head of the Adjara Tourism Department.
