Born and raised in North Carolina, Folds first rose to fame in the mid-90s with Ben Folds Five, whose acerbic, genre-bending take on piano pop helped define an entire era of alternative rock. After scoring multiple hit singles and a gold record with the band, Folds launched his solo career in 2001, releasing a series of similarly acclaimed albums that would firmly establish him as one of the most ambitious and versatile songwriters of his generation. In 2021, he launched the Lightning Bugs podcast, an interview series on creativity and process with guests as diverse as Jon Batiste, Sara Bareilles, Bob Saget, and Rainn Wilson. 

Folds’ masterful new collection, What Matters Most , is an offering, an open hand reaching out to all those wounded and bewildered by a world that seems to make less and less sense every day. Recorded in East Nashville with co-producer Joe Pisapia, the album marks Folds’ first new studio release in eight years, and it’s a bold, timely, cinematic work, one that examines the tragic and the absurd in equal measure as it reckons with hope and despair, gratitude and loss, identity, and perspective. The songs are bittersweet here, hilarious at times, but often laced with a quiet sense of longing and dread. And yet, taken as a whole, the result is an undeniably joyful record that refuses to succumb to the weight of the world around it, an ecstatic reminder of all the beauty and promise hiding in plain sight for anyone willing (and present enough) to recognize their moments as they arrive.

Ben Folds is widely regarded as one of the major music influencers of our generation. The Emmy-nominated singer-songwriter-composer has created an enormous body of genre-bending music, including pop albums with Ben Folds Five, multiple solo albums, and numerous collaborative records.

He toured as a pop artist for three decades and performed with some of the world's greatest symphony orchestras. A New York Times Best-Selling author and podcast host, Ben also composes for film, TV, and theatre, guest stars in movies and TV, and serves as the Artistic Advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.

A longtime advocate for arts and music education funding, Ben launched a music education charitable initiative in his native state of North Carolina entitled "Keys For Keys." This initiative provides funds and keyboards to existing nonprofits that provide free or affordable music lessons to interested school-age children. On the national level, he's an active member of Americans For The Arts and the Arts Action Fund.

Ben Folds to Reprise His “Paper Airplane Request Tour” in Summer 2024 [Updated]

The trek will feature the opportunity for fans to request songs by throwing paper airplanes

Ben Folds is calling for those paper airplane song requests once again. The musician will be embarking on another US tour throughout the summer of 2024, and attendees will have the chance to request songs via throwing a paper airplane at him during the show.

Ben Folds initially embarked on his first “Paper Airplane Request Tour” in 2017, where he’d randomly select fan-requested songs from paper airplanes and perform them solo. The new US tour will feature the same concept, and will be Ben Folds’ first shows of 2024. “The last time I did this on tour the response was overwhelming, with literally hundreds of paper airplanes with song requests being launched on cue from fans at the start of the second half of each of my concerts,” said Folds in a statement. “It’s the purest, most low-tech form of engagement that creates a special bond with my audiences.”

The 21-date trek follows some previously-announced solo dates on the East Coast, and will commence with a show in Charleston, South Carolina on May 30th. Folds will  then continue his solo run with dates in Charlotte, Pittsburgh, Richmond, Toledo, Boise, and more. Update: Folds has added several more dates to the tour, including shows in July and August.

About Regina Spektor

Regina Spektor calls them sandcastles. There’s a million of them, songs that rise up and multiply in her brain — the fruits of months, sometimes years, of channeling and crafting. But what happens to them when it’s time to make new music? “They all have to be slowly washed away. Some of them are really well built, and they’re really high up on the beach,” she says. “It all has to be gone, and then I can start to hear new songs and make a new record.”

Starting with a clean slate, with six momentous years between albums, Spektor returned in 2022 with Home, before and after. The eagerly awaited eighth studio album was the follow-up to 2016’s Remember Us to Life. It paired Spektor with John Congleton (St. Vincent, Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen), who produced the album from afar in Los Angeles with Spektor co-producing in upstate New York.

The years between her albums weren’t exactly fallow. In 2016, at her friend Lin-Manuel Miranda’s invitation, she contributed a song (“Dear Theodosia,” featuring Ben Folds) to The Hamilton Mixtape. Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio declared Regina Spektor Day in her hometown in June 2019, she got a street sign with her name at the Bronx Walk of Fame, and that same month staged a sold out residency on Broadway at the legendary Lunt- Fontanne Theatre.

Her work for television and film continued. “You’ve Got Time,” from Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black, entered the pantheon of classic TV theme songs, so much so that Spektor released an orchestral version of the award-winning tune for the final episode. She wrote “One Little Soldier” for the closing credits of the film Bombshell and multiple songs for the animated series Central Park.

Time has been kind to Spektor’s work. Twenty years have passed since she self-released her 2001 debut, 11:11, which recently received a remastered reissue, as well as a limited-edition box set. In the decades since, Spektor, who was born in Moscow, Russia and raised in the Bronx, New York, has defied classification. With a sophisticated marriage of classical training and a gift for sharp pop hooks and nuanced lyrics, she has created her own genre. She makes Regina Spektor music.
