Bergamo Day Trip from Milan: One Day Itinerary

Bergamo Citta Alta

Before getting to Milan, I heard nothing but not-so-great-things about the city. Determined to walk away from Milan having liked it, I decided to explore anything and everything worth visiting in its area. I knew I had a saved image of this pretty, walled, hilltop town from Instagram a while back, and I recalled it wasn’t far from Milan. So I scrolled back through all my saved images until I finally found it! It was called Bergamo, and upon further research, I learned that walled hilltop town was actually just a portion of the city. Bergamo, as you may or may not know, is divided into two districts . The older district, called the Città (pronounced chee-tah) Alta, sits on top of a hill. The Città Alta is encircled by Venetian walls (named a UNESCO World Heritage site !), and can be reached by funicular from the newer district below, called the Città Bassa . If all this alone doesn’t warrant a visit, I don’t know what does! So without further ado, let’s get straight into how to visit Bergamo on a day trip from Milan .

View of Bergamo Citta Alta from San Vigilio

This is a super detailed guide on how to visit Bergamo via public transport from Milan. You might want to bookmark or Pin this article for later if you don’t have time to get through it now. It includes a secret-ish unlimited travel pass for the day (that many Milanese locals don’t even know about!), key sights in Bergamo, maps , and prices . I did this day trip myself, so if you still have questions by the end of this guide, definitely drop a comment below, and I’ll get back to you on it!

HOW TO GET TO BERGAMO FROM MILAN

Bergamo Citta Alta as seen from Citta Bassa.

Start the day in Milan, and head to Milano Centrale (pronounced chen-tral-eh) train station. This is the only train station in Milan with direct trains to Bergamo . If you are staying closer to Milano Lambrate or Milano Greco Pirelli, you can reach Bergamo via train with one transfer, but I do not recommend this option for two reasons. Firstly, making a connection always complicates a trip. It’s more work, and if your first train arrives late, you’ll miss your second train and be stuck waiting for the next one in the middle of nowhere. Secondly, and as previously mentioned, I’ll be sharing how to use an all-day unlimited travel pass , so you can simply metro over to Milano Centrale for no additional cost for the day!

Recommended reading: The Perfect Two Week Italy Itinerary (especially for your first time!)

From Milano Centrale you will take a fifty-minute train ride to Bergamo . Direct trains leave Milano Centrale for Bergamo at five minutes past the hour, every hour, but always double-check the train schedule the night before on the Trenitalia website .

Unlimited Lombardy Region Transport Ticket

Instead of buying a typical train ticket , I highly recommend you purchase what’s called the “Io Viaggio Ovunque in Lombardia” ticket . This translates to “I Travel Everywhere in Lombardy,” the region with Milan, Bergamo, Lake Iseo, and even Lake Como. This ticket is good for public transport – buses, trains, funiculars – within Lombardy, except the ferries on Lake Como, high-speed trains, ItaloTreno trains, intercity trains, and some other exceptions you can find on the official site . You can buy a pass for 1, 2, 3, or 7 days , good for until midnight of the last day. (So if you buy a one-day pass, it is good until midnight that first day, not 24-hours later.)

Prices for the “Io Viaggio Ovunque in Lombardia” ticket are:

  • 1 day €16.50
  • 2 days €27.00
  • 3 days €32.50
  • 7 days €43.50

The regional train ticket to Bergamo costs €5.50 each way, so €11 round trip. You’ll also need to purchase a round-trip funicular ticket from Bergamo Città Bassa to Città Alta, which will put you close to €16.50. As you’ll see later in the itinerary, I recommend another round funicular trip as well, so before even adding any bus or metro rides, the one-day unlimited pass already makes the most sense . It’s a really good deal, so I’m surprised it seems to be such a secret!!

You can purchase this ticket from a Trenord ticket vending machine in the train station, or from any Milan metro station ticket machine. I’ve linked the official page for this ticket here in case you’d like more info.

HOW TO GET TO BERGAMO CITTA ALTA

Bergamo Citta Alta and surrounding area as seen from San Vigilio.

Once you arrive in Bergamo train station, head straight outside and locate the bus stops on your right side. Take the 1 bus heading for Città Alta . (So the screen on the front-top of the bus should say something like, “1 CITTA ALTA.”) This will take you to the base of the hill, from which you’ll take the funicular up to the walled old town.

Warning : there are a ton of bus stops clustered all right in the same area, heading both directions, so it can be confusing to find the right one. I had to walk all around for quite some time and ask the staff at an entirely unrelated private tour company before locating the correct one. To make sure you don’t have to do the same, I’ve provided the below map with the exact location for you below.

On the bus ride, you’ll start to see the fairytale-like Città Alta. I wasn’t expecting how cool the contrast of the walled old town right up against the modern Città Bassa would look! And although the Città Alta is what I came to see, the bus ride down the Città Bassa was very pretty as well, inspiring me to make sure to walk around it later on.

Once the bus nears the hill, it will make a right turn upwards. This is your signal to request the next stop !! Get off, and walk across to the other side of the street, where the funicular awaits. I’ve provided a map below, just in case.

THINGS TO DO IN BERGAMO CITTA ALTA

Two statue silhouettes over Bergamo.

Before you know it (roughly 1.5 hours since departing Milan), you’re finally at Bergamo’s Città Alta! I recommend allocating at least three hours for exploring the Città Alta and eating lunch, but there’s definitely no rush.

Lasagna Bolognese in Bergamo Citta Alta, Italy.

Many places on the main street offer a lunch meal deal , which is what I had. I paid €10 for bread, my choice between two entrees, a drink (alcoholic or non), and a coffee at the end to wash it all down. There was no cover charge, so service was included!

Bergamo isn’t super touristy. Like….at all! It’s awesome. So take your time enjoying the views, finding peaceful streets, and checking out the few “attractions.”

Torre Civica

Torre Civica in Bergamo Citta Alta.

The largest cluster of “attractions” are in Piazza Vecchia . Here, you will find the Palazzo del Podesta, el Palazzo del Comune, el Palazzo della Ragione, and the Cappella Colleoni. This is also where you’ll find the Torre Civica . For €5, you can climb the tower for what seems to be a lovely panoramic view. I forwent this climb, so I can’t say from personal experience!

Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore

Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo Citta Alta

My favorite building was probably the Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore , also located in the Piazza Vecchia. I loved the pinkish-orange colors of the exterior. The interior of the basilica truly impressed me as well (and, trust me, I’ve definitely seen no shortage of European churches!). The ceilings looked like a painting turned into 3D. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many sculptures along the top of a building before!

Cattedrale di Sant’Alessandro

Cathedral of Sant'Alessandro statues in Bergamo.

Right near this basilica is the Bergamo Cathedral of Sant’Alessandro . I found the exterior and interior of this church less striking than those of its neighbor across the piazza, but still easy on the eyes, nevertheless.

Both churches were closed the first time I walked by them. But when I doubled-back later on, they were open. The hours were very confusing to read for me in Italian, so I unfortunately cannot share those details confidently. I did not pay to enter either church.

In addition to these “attractions,” I highly recommend just walking around town aimlessly for some time! You’ll find additional pretty views, detailed churches, outdoor restaurants, and more.

Ride a Funicular Up to San Vigilio

Bergamo funicular to San Vigilio.

Before heading back down to the Città Bassa, I highly recommend taking a funicular from the Città Alta further up to San Vigilio . The station is a bit behind the official Città Alta area, so I’ve provided a map below.

Exit to the left once you reach the top. From here, you can finally fully appreciate the full picture of the walled Città Alta high above the rest of the area. Leave the station, and explore the area before heading back down. You’ll find Castello di San Vigilio , as well as views of other nearby towns and vineyards.

I would allocate 30-40 minutes for the round-trip funicular ride, snapping pics, and walking around the area. There are a couple restaurants up here as well, so allocate more time if you might fancy food or drink with a view.

Other Things to Do

Psssst : There’s actually more to see in Bergamo! I was jet-lagged on the day I did this day trip, so I woke up at noon in Milan and got to Bergamo in the afternoon. I missed seeing the Porta San Giacomo (to the left when you enter Città Alta from the funicular) and the Rocca (to the right). Just do a quick Google Images search of these two things, and you’ll see why I’m bummed I didn’t get to them!

THINGS TO DO IN BERGAMO CITTA BASSA

Bergamo Citta Bassa Via XX Settembre

Once you’re done enjoying the Città Alta and San Vigilio, take the funicular back down to the Città Bassa. From there, take the bus heading for Città Bassa back down to the central area. The bus stop is right in front of the funicular station entrance (see map below).

I recommend hopping off the bus around the street Piazza Giacomo Matteotti to explore the Città Bassa distract for a bit. With the Città Alta behind you, make a right and walk until this street turns into Via XX Settembre . There are a couple main shopping streets, some contemporary art statues, eateries, and pretty government buildings.

If you decide to do this, I recommend simply walking back to the train station afterwards, as you are only a few long blocks away now. But if you are short on time or interest to see the Città Bassa, you can certainly just ride the bus from the Città Alta straight to the Bergamo train station.

And before you know it, your Bergamo day trip from Milan has come to an end! Once at the Bergamo train station, use your all-day transport pass and board the next train to Milano Centrale. Direct trains leave every hour, at two past the hour, and will get you back in fifty minutes.

That Travelista

Hello! I’m glad to know this post was helpful to you. 🙂

It’s been ~2.5 years since I used this pass, but if I remember correctly, I purchased the ticket at a ticket vending machine in a metro station. Then, I rode the metro to Milano Centrale. This of course required that I insert the ticket before entering the metro, so this validated the ticket and started the time. If you are not going to be using the metro as the first use of the ticket, then I believe you will need to validate it before boarding the train, the same way you would validate any normal train ticket (little machines on the platforms, but ask train station staff for help if you need).

The website states that the ticket must be validated on the first use, and that if you purchase a 7 day ticket without the magnetic strips (I guess there are two kinds of 7 day tickets), you must write your first and last name on the ticket. As far as I know, those are the only rules! I imagine that if a train ticket controller checks you on a train, you show the ticket, they do the math based on the validation time stamp, and that’s it. Just make sure you are using one of the transport types covered by the ticket, which is listed on the website I linked. The types of transport covered by the pass normally aren’t ones you would book in advance.

Hope that helps!! 🙂

bergamo tour from milan

As a hub for many budget flights into nearby Milan , many visitors to Northern Italy tend to overlook the prospect of spending one day in Bergamo and opt for the bigger, glitzier city in the region. However, this is a mistake. With so many flights coming to and from Bergamo airport each and every day, it is well worth planning a bit of a Bergamo itinerary in order to explore this underrated city.

Bergamo is a strikingly beautiful city, compact enough to cover a lot of ground in a short period of time but with enough to do that you won’t be bored. These facts make it ideal for either a Bergamo day trip from Milan or ever for longer stays should that suit your fancy.

So if you’re looking for a smaller city to visit in Lombardy that is conveniently located close to a major airport serving countless European destinations, then consider spending some time in Bergamo – you won’t be sorry.

Table of Contents

How Many Days in Bergamo?

Though many treat Bergamo simply as a gateway to Milan, the city itself is very much worth visiting. But how many days in Bergamo is sufficient to see and enjoy the city?

Well, as I’ve mentioned already – Bergamo is the kind of city with a lot to see and do but not an overwhelming amount to see and do. This means that you can get a good feel for the city even if you only spend one day.

The best way to spend one day in Bergamo is to plan to spend a night in the city. This will ensure you have enough time to see the sites but also chill out and enjoy yourself a bit.

Conversely, you also could easily do a Bergamo day trip from Milan – the cities are located quite close to each other and it will still allow you to get to Bergamo relatively early and even leave after dinner should you want.

If you have more time, spending 2 days in Bergamo will allow you to take in the sites at a more leisurely pace and to really soak up all of the history and culture of the city. If you happen to visit on a day when some sites are closed, you could use the second day to see them, as well.

Bergamo can even be used as a base to explore some parts of the region. It serves as a great jumping-off point to explore places like Lake Como or Lake Garda. In fact, if you’re planning a longer Lake Como trip , then Bergamo is an excellent starting point due to its location.

Getting To & Around Bergamo

Getting to Bergamo is easy from a number of different aspects. In fact, it is often the first point of entry for those travelling to Milan via a budget airline like Ryanair – this is because the Bergamo airport is often labelled as Milan (Bergamo).

So getting to Bergamo from an array of European destinations (and even some destinations further afield) is relatively easy by air, provided you want to subject yourself to the whims of Ryanair, Wizzair et all.

The Bergamo airport is located quite close to the city centre and there is a frequent city bus that can shuttle you there for an affordable price. Bus 1 from the airport goes to a number of stops in the Citta Bassa and from there, it is easy to get anywhere in the city centre.

The airport bus is €2.30 per person (this includes luggage), however, you can also opt to purchase a travel card that is valid for both the airport bus plus all other public transit – including the funiculars!

Funicular Citta Alta Station

Bergamo is also easily accessible from Milan by both train and bus. Because it does tend to operate as a Milan-area airport, the links between Bergamo and the Lombardy capital are frequent and affordable. If you want to book a bus transfer between Milan and Bergamo Airport, you can book online in advance here .

Alternatively, it is also possible to book trains and buses from Milan city centre to Bergamo city centre. Milan is located about an hour by both bus and train from Bergamo, so it is a quick trip no matter how you end up getting there. You can view schedules and book here.

Once in Bergamo, you will find that the majority of the city is pretty simple to navigate on foot. However, there is a lower and upper part of town that is far more pleasant to reach (especially uphill) if you choose to go by funicular.

As mentioned previously, there are travel card options that can be cost-effective if you plan to take the funiculars a few times and/or plan to use the airport bus.

If you don’t choose to go on your day trip independently, you can also book an organised tour to the city.

If you’re coming from Milan, this half-day tour can be a fantastic option. Alternatively, you can book this full-day tour to Bergamo that also includes a visit to Franciacorta and Lake Iseo from Milan should you want to visit from another place.

One Day in Bergamo Itinerary

Without further ado, here’s how to see the best of Bergamo if you only have one day in the city.

Coffee in Citta Bassa

If you’re arriving from Milan, another Italian city or from the Bergamo Airport, your first stop in the city is going to be in the Citta Bassa, or the lower city.

This is a more lived-in and cosmopolitan side of Bergamo, but it is no less charming (or grand) than the upper city. Before making your way to the Citta Alta, take the time to have a coffee (and maybe even a pastry) in the lower city!

We can personally recommend grabbing a coffee at Caffe del Largo , which is a small cafe with a bit of outdoor seating only about five minutes walking from the funicular to Citta Alta, so it makes for a convenient place to get caffeinated before sightseeing!

Coffee & Crossiant @ Caffe del Largo

Funicular or Walk to Citta Alta

After you’ve fueled up on coffee, it’s time to make your way up to the Citta Alta or upper city. This is effectively the Old Town of Bergamo and there are two options of how you could opt to reach this part of town. The first, and easiest, is to take the funicular. The second is to walk.

If you opt to take the funicular, know that it can get very busy so it is best to get there as early as possible if you want to avoid waiting in a long queue behind tour groups and eager day-trippers.

The funiculars come frequently (every five minutes or so), so you likely won’t be waiting too long, but for those who are impatient and up for a bit of cardio, it could be a better option to walk up.

Obviously, the funicular exists for a reason and the walk up to the Citta Alta is steep, but it is also quite lovely, leafy and will take you along the Venetian Walls of the city.

It also is only about ten minutes, so even though the path may be steep, it won’t last too long! If you are interested in this walk it may make more sense to take the funicular up and then to walk down if you don’t want to break too much of a sweat — you’re going to be walking plenty in the Citta Alta itself, anyway!

Venetian Walls of Bergamo

Piazza Vecchia

While wandering through the Citta Alta, you cannot miss Bergamo’s main square – Piazza Vecchia. Like many piazzas in Italy, this one is lined with cafes and is overlooked by the Campanone – or the civic clock tower.

This is a wonderful place to people watch and get your bearings before exploring the town a bit more.

Many roads in the upper town lead to Piazza Vecchia so you will definitely be back here before your one day in Bergamo is up, but it is a good idea to enjoy the views of the square early in your itinerary to get a bit of peace and quiet before a lot of the tourist crowds arrive.

Piazza Vecchia from above

Funicular to Castello di San Vigilio

Just because you made it up to the Citta Alta does not mean that you’re through with funiculars during your Bergamo day trip!

In fact, there is another funicular that goes up to the Castello di San Viglia – a fortification situated on a hill above the upper city where you can get the best views of Bergamo below.

This funicular isn’t nearly as busy and popular as the one from Citta Bassa to Citta Alta, however, it comes about as frequently and you can use the same public transit ticket.

Once at the top of the hill, you will be graced with some of the most spectacular views of the city and the surrounding area.

The castle itself isn’t necessarily anything to write home about – it isn’t open for visitors so you can only walk around it.

However, it is worth strolling down the hill rather than taking the funicular down because you can get even more wonderful views of the city on your way down – again, it only takes about 10 minutes to reach where the funicular takes off from.

Near the Castello di San Vigilio Funicular entrance you will see signs to the Bergamo Botanical Garden, and this makes for a lovely next stop on your itinerary.

Located on the hillside, you’ll need to walk up a bit of a hill to get to the entrance, but the pathway through the gardens is a leisurely stroll back down.

The gardens are free to enter and include many different plants, ponds and benches to relax in. It’s an incredibly peaceful place to visit and not nearly as popular or full of tourists as other areas of the city, despite being absolutely lovely to wander through.

Tulips from Bergamo Botanical Gardens

After a busy morning, it’s time to refuel by enjoying a hearty Italian lunch! There are plenty of great restaurants in central Bergamo so you’re not going to struggle to find a good meal, but there are some places that may be better than others.

If you’re looking for a tasty sit-down lunch for a good price, then make sure to visit Circolino Citta Alta . They have a couple of different set lunch menus for affordable prices and high-quality food. If you’re wondering what to order, you cannot miss the local stuffed pasta, casoncelli , which is often served in a butter and sage sauce with crispy pancetta!

If you’re looking for something quick or a takeaway lunch menu, consider heating to Polentone – a polenta stand located close to the Citta Alta Funicular. You can get several different polenta dishes here for affordable prices. Another popular place is Il Forno, which is a deli serving lots of dishes – including delicious Sicilian-style pizza.

If you’re interested in learning more about the local culinary specialities of Bergamo, consider booking a guided food tour of the city . And if you’re after a dessert, then you can’t go wrong with grabbing a gelato at Carmen (they also have a location in Citta Bassa).

Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore & Duomo di Bergamo

After a long and leisurely lunch, it’s time to visit some of the top attractions in the city, the town’s major churches of Bergamo. These include the Duomo di Bergamo (Bergamo’s Cathedral) and the imposing Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore.

These two churches are situated right next to each other and are absolutely spectacular. The grander of the two, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, boasts a beautiful Romanesque exterior and Baroque interior.

The Duomo di Bergamo is the main cathedral of the city and is constructed with a lovely neo-classical style.

Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore

Looping back to the Piazza Vecchia, you may have noticed the tall bell tower looming over the square. Now it’s time to go to the top of it! Open every day except for Monday, the Campanone (or Torre Civica) costs €5 per person to enter and also includes a museum outlining the history of Bergamo.

It’s worth noting that the majority of the museum is completely in Italian so it may be difficult for non-speakers to get a lot from it.

The entry fee is worth it when it comes to the views from the tower, however, even if you can’t enjoy the museum to its fullest. If you want to work up a sweat, you can climb the stairs to the top of the tower or you could simply take the lift – there is no extra fee.

The view from the top is spectacular and provides excellent views over the Piazza Vecchia and of the Basilica and Duomo along with the Citta Bassa. It’s an excellent way to round out your day in the upper town.

Campanone

Venetian Walls

Before meandering down to the Citta Bassa, take the long way down and wander along the Venetian Walls.

These city walls are consecrated as a Unesco World Heritage site and you can very much enjoy the views from them if you choose to walk down from the Citta Alta rather than hopping on the funicular.

You will also have the opportunity to walk through the main gate of the city (Porta San Giacomo) before making your way down the pathway to the lower city. This gate and bridge are absolutely beautiful and put a lot of Bergamo into perspective.

Porta San Giacomo

Aperitivo in Citta Bassa

End your Bergamo itinerary in the lower town, enjoying aperitivo hour in one of the many streetside cafes in the area. There are countless bars and restaurants where you can enjoy a drink and a large plate of food for around €6-7 per person – but keep in mind that this is a very popular activity and places may be busy!

If you want a great option, we recommend heading to Wood , which makes an excellent Aperol Spritz (along with other cocktails!).

And if you want an ice cream rather than a drink (or along with!), we recommend getting a delicious gelato at La Romana or the Citta Bassa location of Carmen.

If you want to stay for dinner, there are tons of wonderful restaurants in this area to enjoy, as well. La Scagna is a popular choice, serving up local dishes at good prices. Taverna del Gallo da Salvatore is another excellent dinner option in the area.

Where to Stay in Bergamo

Petronilla – If you’re after a luxury stay in Bergamo, then this plus hotel in Citta Bassa is an excellent choice. They have several luxe rooms available, they allow pets and they even have a restaurant and bar on site.

B&B Entro Le Mura – An excellent mid-range option located close to all of the top sites in Citta Alta, this bed and breakfast is a great choice. They have a range of clean and comfortable rooms available, a central location for exploring the city and there is breakfast included each morning.

Private Rental – If you’d like your own place in Bergamo, then a private rental is a great option. There are plenty of places to choose from in the city — such as this historic home in Citta Alta — that can suit all kinds of visitors

bergamo tour from milan

What to see in Bergamo, an enchanting medieval city

Information

Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2017, the city of Bergamo is one of the most delightful corners of the Lombardy region. Although Bergamo can boast a great number of interesting attractions, you can still get the flavour of the place on a day trip from Milan . All it takes is to be well organised and to know which are the city’s essential sights.

What to see in Upper Bergamo

Perched on top of a hill, the Upper Town (surrounded by an enormous wall) is home to beautiful palaces, churches and historic squares. The steep, narrow streets, mostly of stone, wind around the old edifices and fountains, opening out into spacious squares where the residents gather to socialise.

Piazza Vecchia

Piazza Vecchia is the city’s most emblematic square, an ancient symbol of Bergamo’s power. Around it stand some of the city’s most important buildings, along with pleasant terraces and cafés where you can have breakfast or a snack.

Piazza Vecchia de Bergamo

Piazza Vecchia de Bergamo

Basílica de Santa María

This church’s Baroque-style façade with its immense domes and cupolas is as eye-catching as its interior tapestries, and black and white tiles.

Básilica de Santa María, Bergamo

Básilica de Santa María

Capilla Colleoni

Built in red and white marble, the Colleoni chapel has one of the most breathtakingly beautiful Renaissance façades in Bergamo’s historic quarter.

Palazzo della Ragione

This palace, in Piazza Vecchia, dates back over 1,000 years. It has been used as a town hall, a library and a courtroom. Today, the building is open to the public so that visitors can discover its history.

Torre Cívica

Also known as Il Campanone, its bell tolls 100 times each night at 10.00 p.m. as a reminder of the historic closing of the town gates during the Venetian occupation.

Palazzo Nuovo

Its construction took over three centuries, and it is now one of Italy’s most important libraries. Its exhibits include ancient parchments, ciphers, and even highly valuable musical scores.

Bergamo Cathedral

The Cathedral’s white, unprepossessing façade contrasts with its splendid and extravagantly decorated interior. It houses an abundance of treasures, one of the most outstanding being Pope John XXIII’s crown, made of gold and studded with pearls, diamonds, rubies and emeralds.

Catedral de Bergamo

Catedral de Bergamo

San Vigilio Castle

This fortress is a historic testament to the power wielded for centuries by Bergamo’s rulers. High on a hill, almost 500 metres up, it played a strategic role as a watchtower for the city. Although it now lies in ruins, it is still perfectly possible to make out its towers, cannon placements, embrasures, and the like.

What to see in Lower Bergamo

The Lower Town is the modern part of Bergamo, with wide avenues and twentieth-century buildings. The Porta Nuova district is home to the majority of businesses, shops, trendy restaurants, and bars. Via Roma, also known as Viale Vittorio Emanuele , is the Lower Town’s main thoroughfare. Here you will find a number of interesting buildings, including the Donizetti theatre, the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie and the Torre dei Caduti. However, it is the Accademia Carrara , Bergamo’s most famous museum, that commands the attention of visitors with over 1,800 works of ancient art.

At one end of Via Roma is the railway station, and at the other the funicular that connects Upper and Lower Bergamo. The funicular is used by visitors and locals alike, and is one of the oldest in Italy, having been in operation for over 120 years.

What to eat in Bergamo

You will be spoilt for choice for restaurants in Bergamo. So if you visit the city, don’t leave without trying its famous and delicious cansocelli, the casonsèi dela bergamasca. A stuffed pasta, similar to ravioli, with breadcrumbs, egg, Parmesan, minced meat, sausages, amaretti biscuits (made with an almond paste), pears, raisins, and spices. A gastronomic time bomb, without a doubt, but one that will delight your tastebuds.

Another typical local offering is the polenta allá Bergamasca , a salted flatbread made with maize flour. To be followed by a traditional dessert, the polenta e osei , a cake with chocolate cream, butter, walnuts and rum, topped with marzipan. If it’s a hot day, we recommend you make for the Porta Sant’Alessandro, call into the Marianna cake shop, and order a stracciatella ice cream . Why? Because this is where that particular flavour originated, so don’t hold back: try the original.

How to get to Bergamo

If you can take advantage of the special offers and cheap plane tickets available to Bergamo , there’s good news: the airport is only 6 kilometres from the city centre — a 15-minute drive. There are also buses every 20 minutes, which stop at Bergamo’s bus station, in the Lower Town, the Upper Town, and at the funicular.

Vistas de la ciudad de Bergamo

Vistas de la ciudad de Bergamo

If you’re travelling by train , departures are every 20 minutes from Milano Centrale railway station. The express train journey only takes about 48 minutes.

If you’re travelling by car , you simply have to drive the 50 kilometres that separate Bergamo from Milan along the convenient A4 toll motorway.

  • Bergamo Cathedral: Bergamo Cathedral is an imposing temple dedicated to the city’s patron saint, Alexander of Bergamo.
  • Venetian walls: The inhabitants of Bergamo built a wall to surround the city as they were terrified of being attacked by the Spanish troops. Although the wall measured nearly 4 miles (6 km), it only had four gates.

Atalanta vs. Fiorentina odds, picks, how to watch, stream, time: April 24, 2024 Coppa Italia score prediction

Brandt sutton has locked in his best bets for wednesday's atalanta vs. fiorentina coppa italia match on paramount+.

atalanta-fiorentina-getty-cbs.jpg

Fiorentina are looking to make another trip to the 2024 Coppa Italia final match, but first they must get past Atalanta in a semifinal clash on Wednesday on Paramount+ . Fiorentina fell 2-1 to Inter Milan in last year's finale, but enter Wednesday's game with plenty of confidence after going unbeaten in four straight matches. Atalanta fell 1-0 to Fiorentina in the first leg of the matchup, but have been competitive overall and are unbeaten in three of their last four across all competition.  Stream the match live on Paramount+, which you can now try free for the first seven days when you sign up here , and catch full analysis on the  CBS Sports Golazo Network .

Kickoff from Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo is set for 3 p.m. ET. The latest Atalanta vs. Fiorentina odds list Atalanta as the -120 favorites (risk $120 to win $100) on the 90-minute money line, with Fiorentina as the +320 underdogs. A draw is priced at +295 and the over/under for total goals is 2.5. Wednesday's match will be  streamed live on Paramount+ with their must-have Premium plan, which you can now try free for the first week .

Paramount+  is the only place to  watch every minute of every  Coppa Italia  match this season . Coppa Italia picks for Fiorentina vs. Atalanta

Before you tune in to Wednesday's match, you need to see the Coppa Italia picks from betting expert Brandt Sutton . Sutton, a former collegiate soccer player, has been SportsLine's top soccer editor for more than five years. He has followed soccer closely for much longer and factors in managerial tactics, projected lineups and past performances to make the most-informed decisions possible, keeping his finger on the pulse of the game all over the globe.

For Atalanta vs. Fiorentina, Sutton is picking Fiorentina with a +0.5 handicap for a -110 payout. Atalanta are heavily favored by oddsmakers in this match, however they haven't won a match at Gewiss Stadium since a Europa League clash on March 14 and haven't defeated an Italian opponent there since a 3-0 beat down of Sassuolo on Feb. 17.

Meanwhile, Fiorentina's defense has been a key to their recent success and they have conceded one goal over their last four matches across all competition. They have also only lost one game over their last six overall, and that was a 1-0 decision to Juventus where Fiorentina only allowed two shots on target.

"Fiorentina was the runner-up in this competition last season and they need just a draw in this match to advance to the final, so I expect we'll see Vincenzo Italiano's men frustrate an Atalanta side that is winless in three of its last four games on home soil," Sutton told SportsLine.  Stream the game here  and  check out full soccer coverage on CBS Sports Golazo Network .

Can I get tickets on arrival or must pre-book ?

And also tickets from Milan Centrale Station to Monterosso al Mare.

https://www.milanbergamoairport.it/en/bus/

It is not necessary to buy the ticket in advance, as there are several companies; better to buy directly from the driver what leaves first.

Direct trains from Milan to Monterosso are Intercity (IC) trains which require mandatory seat reservations included in the ticket price. Obviously it only applies to that booked train, with the risk of the flight being delayed.
