The 10 Best Travel Documentaries on Netflix

Here are the best travel documentaries on Netflix, allowing you to see the world from the comfort of your own couch.

Maybe you've caught the travel bug. Maybe you have returned home from a big trip abroad and are wondering where to go next. Or maybe you're an aspirational traveler who partakes in wanderlust from the comfort of your own sofa.

No matter what your motivations are, Netflix has you covered. In this article we list the best travel documentaries you can watch on Netflix right now. All of which are guaranteed to make you long for a week (or two) experiencing new sights and sounds.

1. Expedition Happiness

What is life’s purpose ? To be happy, sure, but how? In Expedition Happiness, a couple tries to find out. What is happiness after all? Is happiness a wedding? A loft overlooking a great view of the city’s chaos? A monotonous routine just to maintain a healthy bank balance?

After all, what is the point of living if you do not break the routine. Sit back and stream the Alaskan mountains to the Mexican beaches with the "Loft on Wheels" created by Mogli and Felix with their dog Rudi. Let your soul travel as these three try to figure out what happiness is.

Get to know the ups and downs of executing a moving residence, and to turn an old school bus into happiness.

If you love this one, you might also like these nature documentaries .

2. Street Food

Combining travel with food, this documentary series from the creators of Chef's table will probably leave you hungry after a few episodes. The first season concentrates on Asia, visiting Bangkok, Osaka, and Seoul, among other destinations.

The theme tying all of these locales together is, as you probably guessed from the name, the street food you can find there. While the focus is often on the food itself, the show also focuses on the local heroes who create it.

3. Somebody Feed Phil

This is hands down the most fun you'll have watching a food and travel documentary. The way that Phil approaches new food, new places, and new people is a breath of fresh air.

He’ll take you to places you never thought of. Places you’ll end up adding to your bucket list. After watching this I ended up adding to my list: coffee in Vietnam, vegetarian food in Israel, dragon fruit in Thailand, and hot dogs in Copenhagen, to name a few.

As Phil says, "If you like a dish, go to the source." Get delighted, get amused, get amazed and definitely get hungry while somebody feeds Phil.

4. Dark Tourist

Not all of the best travel documentaries have to be about the beautiful and the serene. If you’re in the market for a slightly twisted travel story, Dark Tourist is for you. David Farrier, a New Zealand based filmmaker and journalist travels around the world looking for unusual and often morbid tourist spots across the world.

This documentary explores a new phenomenon called dark tourism. This is where tourists intentionally travel to places associated with death and destruction. A war-torn country? Sure. A dangerous border crossing? Why not. A quick trip around radioactive environments? Don’t mind if I do.

5. National Parks Adventure

The US National Parks Service is more than 100 years old. That’s more than a century of protecting natural wildernesses in the United States.

This breathtaking documentary by filmmaker Greg MacGillivray will make you want to go visit a national park right away. Between the beautiful montages is a story of three artists as they revisit Roosevelt and Muir's camping trip, where the Parks Service began.

6. Pedal the World

Some titles are artistic, hinting at a deeper meaning. Others are starkly literal. Pedal the World belongs in the second group. Why? This is a documentary following one man's trip around the world by bicycle.

That man is Felix Starck, who also happens to be the director of Expedition Happiness. If you enjoyed that documentary, you'll likely enjoy this one as well. Keep in mind that this is an earlier effort, so it may be a little rough around the edges compared to the newer movie.

This is a must watch for bicycle enthusiasts and anyone obsessed with world travel.

7. Jack Whitehall: Travels With My Father

Father-son bonding is a different experience for everyone. When comedian Jack Whitehall was young, he and his father Michael never really bonded.

Now, Whitehall wants to bring that spark back by taking a gap year and traveling with his father. Watch as this comedian trades the stand-up stage (see the best stand-up comedy specials on Netflix ) for a tuk-tuk in Thailand.

What better way to spend time with your parent than by going on a trip. But what happens when you have a slightly grumpy father and you are the overly energetic one? Quite a blast, actually, Watch as this father-son team gets into accidents, goes to odd places, and attempts to open up to one another.

8. Paul Hollywood’s Big Continental Road Trip

For most people, where you travel is the important part. For others, it's how you get there that matters. Car enthusiasts definitely fall into the latter group. If you count yourself among them, Paul Hollywood's Big Continental Road Trip should be next up in your Netflix queue.

This documentary follows the actor, baker, and part-time racing driver across a large swathe of Europe. The series sees Hollywood visit Italy, Germany, and France. In each hour-long episode, he chronicles the cars and culture of a given country.

If you're a fan of cars as well as the Great British Baking Show, don't miss this one.

9. Mountain

Feeling contemplative? Are you looking for a documentary that features breathtaking locations but takes a slower, more meditative approach? Mountain could be exactly what you're looking for.

Directed and produced by Jennifer Peedom, Mountain explores peaks around the world. Willem Dafoe narrates the film, occasionally reading passages from Robert Macfarlane's Mountains of the Mind.

Much like that book, the film examines the human fascination with mountains. Even if you never visit a mountain in your life, this film will give you a greater appreciation of them.

10. Night on Earth

Whether you're a night owl or you're afraid of the dark, night can a fascinating time. Night on Earth is a documentary in the style of Planet Earth that focuses on what happens at night across the world. Thanks to new camera technology, this is the best look at night you've probably ever seen.

Each episode has its own focus. The first episode follows predators and their prey, while other episodes touch on nighttime in the ocean or even cities. One episode even takes you behind the scenes to see how the crew captures such amazing footage.

Keep Going With Food Documentaries on Netflix

Travel and food often go hand in hand. But what if you're more of a foodie than a traveler? Now that you know about the best travel documentaries to watch on Netflix why not check out the best documentaries about food .

Wondering how you can travel from home without stepping outside your front door? Then look no further than this list of the best travel documentaries and TV shows that will whisk you from your armchair to another country!

1) The Long Way Round

Two men taking motorcycles from London on a journey east all the way around the world might not sound that appealing but trust me, this is one of the best travel series I have ever seen!

Long time friends Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman spend several months planning this epic journey around the world. The Long Way Round journey begins in London and ends in New York – the longest route around the world – and takes you through Kazakhstan, Russia, Mongolia right round to Alaska and more.

A film crew follows them but is always around a day behind and generally only meets them at border crossings, so you see the real good, bad and ugly of travel by motorbike through some harsh but beautiful landscapes.

2) The Long Way Down

Not satisfied with their journey around the world, Ewan and Charlie return for another motorcycle adventure taking the Long Way Down , starting from the tip of Scotland John O’Groats to the southernmost point in Africa, Cape Agulhas.

The 15,000-mile bike adventure is an even harder challenge than the previous with extreme temperatures and harsh climate to deal with. But as with the Long Way Round, McGregor and Boorman are hilarious and honest making this series an absolute must watch!

3) The Kindness Diaries

In this series, we follow Leon Logothetis as he travels the world on the kindness of strangers. In the first series, Leon travels from LA through the US, Europe and Asia – hitting countries including Italy, Croatia, Greece , Turkey , India , Cambodia , Thailand and Vietnam , travelling by vintage motorbike with no money in his pockets. Leon relies on the kindness of strangers to give him food and a place to stay each night.

The Kindness Diaries Series 2 repeats the same idea, but instead Leon travels from Alaska, through the US down into South America in a vintage VW Beetle.

This show demonstrates the kind hearts of strangers as Leon meets hundreds of people who help him and have also dedicated their lives to helping others.

4) Street Food

Available on Netflix, this 9 part documentary takes you to a different street market in Asia in each 30-minute episode. If you like to travel for food, then this series is for you!

Discover the delicacies on offer in Bangkok, Osaka, Delhi, Yogyakarta, Chiayi, Seoul , Ho Chi Minh City , Singapore and Cebu. Each episode comes with a story of the people who make the food, including a Bangkok chef who has a Michelin-star after spending decades making crab omelets and the obsession with chicken rice of the hawkers of Singapore.

5) Anything By David Attenborough

But seriously, any documentary by David Attenborough is worth watching and he has created several that are country and destination-specific, including ones in The Galapagos , Africa  and Tasmania.

I personally loved watching Galapagos before my trip to the islands to get to learn about the history and emergence of these islands off the coast of Ecuador.

Once you have made your way through the destination-specific documentaries you can watch Attenborough’s more general documentaries, including Big Pacific , Seven Worlds One Planet , and Wild North .

6) Around The Next Bend

This 12 part documentary follows two young adventurers as they go on a 2,500 km rafting expedition along the famous Ganges river in India.

Around The Next Bend shows you the colourful, beautiful and often challenging side of India. The two expeditions raft past the Taj Mahal, through Varanasi, through Nepal and into Bangladesh.

7) March of The Penguins

Who doesn’t want to spend an hour or two watching penguins making their way through Antarctica to the dulcet tones of narrator Morgan Freeman?

March of the Penguins is a classic docu-movie set in Antarctica , following the emperor penguins as they go on a quest to find the perfect mate and to start a family.

best europe travel documentary

8) Figure It Out: On The Hayduke Trail

This series documents a thru-hike on one of America’s most challenging routes, The Hayduke Trail . The journey is 800 miles through Southern Utah and Northern Arizona.

If you enjoy hiking or magnificent scenery then you will love following this trail as each episode takes you to a new part of the route, covering places such as Arches National Park, Moab, Escalante, The Wave, the Grand Canyon, Zion and Colorado City.

The documentary also explores how we can use the lessons that are learned whilst out in the wilderness to improve our day to day lives.

9) Salt Of The Earth

Salt Of The Earth is an Oscar-nominated 2014 documentary about the life and work of Brazilian photo-journalist Sebastião Salgado. Salgado spent 40 years documenting groups of people in remote corners of South America, Africa and Central Europe.

The documentary sees Salgado talk about the stories behind the photographs and whilst sometimes difficult to watch it is a fascinating look into some areas of the world we may not ever explore ourselves.

best europe travel documentary

10) Free Solo

Free Solo is the story of solo climber Alex Hannold climbing 3,200 ft El Capitan in Yosemite National Park with no ropes. Winner of the 2019 Academy Award for Best Documentary, this is a heart pounding story of one man’s obsession to do what has never been done before.

The documentary will keep you on the edge of your seat, with amazing footage and heart stopping moments as you watch Alex’s attempt to climb El Capitan completely solo, sans ropes and all.

best europe travel documentary

11) Expedition Happiness

Follow the journey of Felix Starck and his girlfriend Mogli as they adventure through North America in a refurbished school bus.

Starck is famous for the documentary Pedal The World, where he goes on an 18,000-kilometer journey by bicycle through 22 countries. Arguably Pedal The World is the better of the two documentaries, with Expedition Happiness a nice idea and an easy watch, but a little light on culture or interesting activities.

best europe travel documentary

12) Anthony Bourdain: A Cooks Tour

In this series, famous food writer and presenter Anthony Bourdain travels the world indulging his passion for trying local cuisines. Along the way, Bourdain meets several eccentric characters bringing life to this docu-series.

Discover foods from the Caribbean, New Orleans, Brazil, Minneapolis, New York , Hanoi , Singapore, Melbourne and more in series 1 of A Cooks Tour .

50 Best Travel Shows Of All Time (& How To Watch Them)

Anthony Bourdain clip from "Roadrunner"

We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Most of us can't reasonably travel all of the time. Thankfully, we can live vicariously through our screens when we cannot be globetrotting ourselves. Travel shows are a dime a dozen, mainly because many of us would rather explore than deal with our responsibilities. But how do you know which shows are worth your time? That depends mainly on your tastes and interests, but we can provide some solid starting points.

From celebrities heading their own adventurous docuseries to food-loving vagabonds visiting remote destinations, travel shows can show us scenes and cultures we would otherwise have no concept of. In fact, television often inspires travel, and watching world wanderers eat their way through exotic destinations is a great way to help plan your next trip. These 50 series are some of the best TV has to offer, and even if you don't make it through all of them, you may find a gem that piques your particular interest.

50. Nomad with Carlton McCoy

Classically trained chef and expert sommelier Carlton McCoy seeks out the best in international cuisine, music, and art in the CNN series "Nomad with Carlton McCoy." Premiering in May 2022, McCoy travels everywhere in the travel series, from the overlooked pleasures of Mississippi to the corners of Ghana. For McCoy, the show's focus lies in adventures and delights found away from the well-worn paths frequented by tourists. Instead, he enjoys savoring hometown favorites from local populations. What McCoy may lack in experience and poise, he and "Nomad" make up for with its premise to go behind the scenes of some of the world's most recognizable locales.

The first "Nomad with Carlton McCoy" season is available to stream on  Prime Video with Discovery+.

49. Down to Earth with Zac Efron

The world is a beautiful place, and it's easy to showcase such on film. This is why a travel show has to be about more than just pretty scenery, and "Down to Earth with Zac Efron" delivers in a big way. The series puts a highly informative spin on the genre by taking viewers on whirlwind journeys worldwide in search of health secrets. We're not talking about avocado toast or juice cleanses, either.

Efron and wellness expert Darin Olien visit destinations to learn about topics like renewable energy, superfoods, and water quality. Have you ever heard of a water sommelier? The experts know a thing or two about what kind of water makes our bodies happy, and a "Down to Earth" episode in France consults one of the few professionals in existence. The series also has episodes on a seed bank stocked for the end of the world, Iceland's Blue Lagoon, and the Amazon rainforest.

Although "Down to Earth" earned Zac Efron a Daytime Emmy, lack of viewership caused the series to be canceled quickly. It had one season at Netflix and was picked up for another at The CW, only to be on the chopping block two episodes later. Lack of quantity does not mean lack of quality, though, and the "High School Musical" star's travel show is a solid viewing.

You can watch "Down to Earth with Zach Efron" on Netflix and The CW .

48. The World's Most Amazing Vacation Rentals

Sometimes, a typical hotel on vacation doesn't cut it, with intrepid travelers opting for more unique and luxurious digs during their stay abroad. The Netflix original series "The World's Most Amazing Vacation Rentals" explores everything from treehouses to alpaca farms to rent worldwide. Hosted by Megan Batoon, Jo Franco, and Luis D. Ortiz, the show reminds viewers that far more than cheap motels and chain hotels are available to make a vacation even more authentic and unique. While some of the rentals visited on the show run on the pricier side, these are balanced out with more cost-effective rentals for travelers not looking to shell out top dollar on accommodations.

"The World's Most Amazing Vacation Rentals" is available to stream on  Netflix .

47. Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy

Academy Award-nominated actor Stanley Tucci reconnects with his ancestral roots in the CNN travel series "Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy." Premiering in 2021, the show has Tucci visit different regions in Italy to learn more about the local cuisine, culture, and history in a sun-soaked tour of the Mediterranean country. Though the major tourist centers of Italy are among the destinations in Tucci's tour, the host takes the time to explore restaurants and locations off the beaten track to reveal a more authentic Italian experience. Buoyed by Tucci's understated yet quietly charismatic presence, "Searching for Italy" has been nominated for multiple Emmy Awards, winning two for its achievement in nonfiction television.

Available to purchase and rent through most digital retailers, "Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy" is also available to stream on Discovery+ .

46. Mysterious Islands

Accomplished pilot and explorer Kellee Edwards invites viewers to join her on his globe-trotting adventures with the Travel Channel series "Mysterious Islands." Edwards particularly takes an interest in some of the most remote islands on Earth, visiting them with her private seaplane to examine them from above and by foot. A refreshing contrast to the hustle-and-bustle of travel shows revolving around heavily populated locales, "Mysterious Islands" offers a more serene, nature-focused look at isolated getaways. Before hosting "Mysterious Islands," Edwards hosted and published a travel vlog through her website that catapulted her into the public eye.

"Mysterious Islands" is currently available to stream on  fuboTV and Philo .

45. Ride with Norman Reedus

"Cool" is the only way to describe "Ride with Norman Reedus." Cruising on a slew of bikes, "The Boondock Saints" and "The Walking Dead" actor meets up with a different travel partner in each episode to explore the open road of America and international destinations. With six seasons as of 2023, the series has become a lasting one on AMC.

Norman Reedus isn't the first to make a travel show centered on biker culture, so what makes it so unique? His vibe, for one. However, it's also the particular variety that his program offers viewers. Reedus does not stick to just one style or motorcycle manufacturer; he also has many celebrity guests. He has the bikers' seal of approval.

From Dave Chapelle to Keanu Reeves, you'll be surprised that some of your favorite celebrities ride and are just as captivating in an environment you don't usually see them in. Fans of Reedus' work will also be happy to see quite a few familiar faces as his "The Walking Dead" co-stars, including Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Steven Yeun, join in on the fun.

You can watch "Ride with Norman Reedus" on AMC+ .

44. Epic Drives

Car expert Arthur St. Antoine entered the pole position with the automobile travel series "Epic Drives," premiering in 2010. Backed with a whole fleet of cars, often with some of the world's coolest and fastest sports and luxury automobiles, St. Antoine opens the engine up and cuts loose on roads around the globe. From traversing the Pacific Coast Highway to showcasing winter driving tips on the frozen roads of Scandinavia, St. Antoine guides viewers through truly stunning international roadways. Though "Epic Rides" puts its slick automobiles in the forefront, the travel series is also keenly aware of how to capture the natural beauty of the gorgeous destinations visited.

"Epic Drives" is available to stream on Roku and Prime Video  with a MotorTrend extension.

Our ranking methodology

Everyone has that one show they're connected to, whether popular or not. "Best" is always subjective, and your all-time favorite series may not even be something someone else knows exists. That doesn't mean it's any less valid, though. We've tried to keep our personal opinions from this list and instead relied on more tangible elements when compiling our rankings. You'll find some of the most beloved, compelling, and critically acclaimed travel shows — and some you may have never heard of.

A travel show's host can be as important as the places traveled. There's a reason why Anthony Bourdain will always appear on lists like this one. His captivating storytelling capabilities and genuinely raw nature make for compelling TV that viewers resonate with. This kind of grab power shows up throughout our list of picks, with the face and voice of a program helping to boost some of the programs in our rankings.

We've considered the likability of the shows chosen here by scouring reviews from multiple sources, like Reddit, Rotten Tomatoes, and IMDb. We've also factored in the number of seasons and any accolades a show may have been given. A lack of awards certainly doesn't dull a hidden gem's luster, though, so don't be surprised that many shows featured here have gone under the award committees' radar.

50 of the Best Travel-ish Shows to Watch When You Can't Travel

Abbie Mood Lang

Abbie Mood Lang

August 8, 2023

We can only travel so much ( no matter how cheap the flights are ). So when you inevitably settle down onto the couch, check out one of these shows to transport you to a different place until you can get there in person.

Here are 50 of our favorite travel tv shows.

Traditional Travel Shows

Anthony Bourdain in the The Layover.

1. Rick Steves’ Europe

Rick Steves might be a bit bookish but that’s one of the things we love about him. The man knows Europe—and the continent’s history—like the back of his hand, and his love for the region is clear. Whether you already love the countries and cities he visits, too, or are dreaming of the day you finally make it there, don’t be surprised if you find yourself geeking out right along with him. Available on: Amazon, Hulu, YouTube

>> Get inspired with our list of 25 ideas for where to go in Europe.

2. passport to europe with samantha brown.

Sam Brown travels with a sense of curiosity and excitement that you can’t help but get caught up in. “Passport to Europe with Samantha Brown” is packed with history, popular landmarks, local restaurants, and shopping spots—literally everything you need to know about both major cities and smaller spots in Europe.  Available on: Amazon

3. The Layover

This one is made for travelers who love to maximize every. single. second. when they travel, including the time in between flights (looking at you, Type As). In “The Layover,” the late Anthony Bourdain uses every travel trick in the book to do—and eat—as much as he can within 24-48 hours.  Available on: Hulu, YouTube, Sling, Amazon

>> Plan your own short adventure with our layover guides.

4. the national parks: america's best idea.

Most of us have hiked, backpacked, or at the very least, driven through one of the United States’ national parks. From lesser-visited spots like the Gates of the Arctic in Alaska to (maybe a little too) popular ones like Yellowstone, this documentary pays homage to these beautiful places, sharing the history of the national park system from the 1800s to the present time through breathtaking video footage, interviews, and untold stories.  Available on: Amazon, YouTube

5. Globe Trekker

Featuring a rotating cast of hosts, “Globe Trekker” is a real-life version of the Lonely Planet guidebooks. The first few seasons were filmed in the 90s so don’t expect high-def, but over two decades they cover just about everywhere that you could think of, from London to Northern India to the Australian Outback. Available on: Amazon

Experiential Travel Shows

dark tourist.

6. Dark Tourist

If you are fascinated by all things unusual—and maybe even morbid—you’ll definitely get some ideas from this Netflix series. In “Dark Tourist,” journalist David Farrier explores destinations with a grim history, like witnessing an exorcism in Mexico, hiking through a haunted forest in Japan, or swimming in a lake formed by a nuclear blast in Kazakhstan. Just don’t say we didn’t warn you if you have trouble sleeping after! Available on: Netflix

7. Conan Without Borders

Team Coco, this one is for you. See a side of Conan you never knew you needed as your favorite late-night talk show host takes his antics on the road to experience pop culture in other countries firsthand. Always wanted to see Conan star in a telenovela? Check. Wonder if he could hack it as a K-pop star? Done. Curious to see what his, um, dance skills look like? Season 1, Episode 1.  Available on: Netflix

8. Tales by Light

There’s something about an amazing photo that makes the rest of us wonder how it even happened. While there’s a little bit of “right place, right time” to many great shots, the best photographers know exactly what to look for when it comes to lighting, angles, and capturing emotions and feelings. Not just a behind-the-scenes look at how the pictures are taken, “Tales by Light” also show us how powerful images can be when it comes to conservation. Available on: Netflix

9. Expedition Unknown

With a background in archaeology and a “passion for the unexplained,” Josh Gates investigates unsolved mysteries, lost cities, and buried treasure all around the world. He’s got a little bit of an Indiana Jones vibe going on, and actually does get himself in some hairy situations while tackling challenges like searching for Amelia Earhart’s remains in Fiji—but without the Nazis breathing down his neck or giant boulders barreling his way. Available on: Hulu, YouTube TV, Sling

10. The Moaning of Life

After “An Idiot Abroad” concluded and comedian Karl Pilkington turned 40, he had some big life questions, as one does. “The Moaning of Life” documents Pilkington’s mid-life crisis as he travels around the world to see how other cultures tackle big topics like marriage, having children (they’re not for him), the secret to happiness, and even death. Available on: Amazon

11. Planet Earth

The BBC put some serious funding into the production of “Planet Earth” and it has paid off. The series has been awarded four Emmys and a Peabody Award from the Royal Television Society for its breathtaking episodes featuring a different biome or habitat each time. From the Arctic and Antarctica to the depths of the oceans, if this doesn’t inspire you to see more of our planet, nothing will. Available on: YouTube, Amazon

Road Trips

Top Gear.

12. Long Way Round

Watch actors Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman hop on their BMW R1150GS Adventure motorcycles (hey, some people are interested in those kinds of details) and cruise from London to New York. They take an eastern route through Europe, Asia, and Alaska, then down to the contiguous US, usually off-road. The two have an obvious shared passion for riding, which is a definite requirement if you plan to sit on a bike seat for 19,000 miles! Available on: Amazon

13. Long Way Down

A sequel to their 2004 adventure, Long Way Down follows Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman again as they ride their trusty motorcycles from Scotland through Europe and down Africa to Cape Town, South Africa. This time the duo covers an impressive 15,000 miles—though as the episodes show, it’s not always easy. Available on: Tubi

14. Epic Drives

Come for the cars, stay for the conversations. Created in partnership with Motor Trend magazine, this show highlights fast cars, unique trucks (Ford Falcon XR6 Ute anyone?), and stories from locals in epic locations. Available on: YouTube

15. Top Gear

There’s a reason that there are nine (!) movies in the Fast & Furious franchise—people love watching drivers push their cars to the limit. "Top Gear" is part review, part road trip, and all adrenaline, and the celebrity guest drivers and absurd challenges add to the fun. Now that we think about it, maybe Rocket League® was inspired by the Top Gear Car Sports segment…? Available on: YouTube TV, Amazon

16. The Grand Tour

Filled with bits of uniquely quirky (and questionable) advice like “looking good is more important than looking where you’re going,” "The Grand Tour" finds Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May (of “Top Gear” fame) driving unique automobiles in interesting places. The friends drive everything from an Aston Martin in South Africa to the Fiat Panda 4x4 in Colombia to beach buggies in Namibia. They talk, they eat, they race. Available on: Amazon

Food & Drink

Ugly Delicious.

17. Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations

“No Reservations” combines two of the best things about traveling: food and adventure. Throw in Anthony Bourdain and you’ve got a truly entertaining TV show. The chef gets down and dirty in each location, giving us a look at not just the food, but the people and a fun way to experience the culture. Available on: Hulu, YouTube TV, Sling, Amazon

18. Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown

Bourdain once said, “You learn a lot about someone when you share a meal together.” “Parts Unknown” brings the table to you, as the chef learns about the history of often-complicated places (Detroit, Iran, Senegal) by sharing a traditional food or drink with the people who live there.  Available on: Hulu, YouTube TV, Amazon

19. Gordon Ramsay's Uncharted

Chef Gordon Ramsay is probably best known for his strong personality on his reality TV shows, like “Hell’s Kitchen,” but in “Uncharted,” we see a more humble side of the Brit. He frequently finds himself thrown out of his comfort zone while learning about the cuisine or traditional cooking methods from a local and is then thrown into the fire by attempting to make a dish for the community himself. Available on: Hulu, YouTube TV, Sling, Disney+

20. Gordon's Great Escape

Imagine Gordon Ramsay in a white tank top, admitting that he has no idea what he’s doing and traveling around India (often on motorbike) to become versed on what “real” curry is like compared to the dish he loves in the UK. The show embodies the sights and sounds of India and Ramsay even experiences “travel sickness,” just like the rest of us. The last four episodes take place in Southeast Asia and Ramsay continues his role as the student, which isn’t a position we’re used to seeing him in. Available on: Amazon, Disney+

21. Ugly Delicious

Each episode revolves around a type of food and then James Beard Award-winning chef David Chang travels to different countries to explore how those places interpret it or make it. With close-up shots of the food as it’s being made, cooked, and consumed, you can almost smell the warm pizza crust and feel the heat of the hot chicken in your mouth. Available on: Netflix

22. Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

If you like “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee,” you’ll love "Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner." David Chang travels the world to meet up with funny, food-loving celebrities like Seth Rogen and Chrissy Teigen as they embark on culinary adventures in various cities around the world. Available on: Netflix

23. Street Food

Street food is almost like a culture within a culture. Wherever you go, travelers can count on carts to have the most authentic food—and people—you’ll ever find. Capturing the vibrant colors and essence of each dish, this show manages to make even the most humble of street food look so beautiful; it's like a love letter to the food and the people who make it. Available on: Netflix

24. Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern

Even if you consider yourself an adventurous eater, this one might make you a little squeamish. But hey, you’ve gotta give Zimmern credit for being up for anything, like lamb brains and duck tongue. Available on: Hulu, YouTube TV, Sling, Amazon

25. Three Sheets

Comedian Zane Lamprey is living the dream—traveling the world to meet new people and drink alcohol with them. It’s essentially an international pub crawl, including the day-after hangover cures. Available on: Amazon

26. I’ll Have What Phil’s Having

Phil Rosenthal is hilarious (he did create “Everybody Loves Raymond”) but in a very wholesome way. He had an admittedly bland diet as a child, so Rosenthal wants to experience as much as he can as an adult—even if that means stepping into the unknown. His friendly demeanor and childlike innocence make you feel like you are just tagging along with an uncle and experiencing a place for the first time. Available on: YouTube, Amazon

27. Somebody Feed Phil

In “Somebody Feed Phil,” Rosenthal actually brings his friends and family along as he visits cities ranging from Tel Aviv to New Orleans. Phil’s excitement is contagious as he tastes the best pizza, egg cream—and even hot dog—of his life. Available on: Netflix

28. BuzzFeed's Worth It

BuzzFeed knows how to tap into popular culture, and “Worth It” offers a unique spin on your typical food review. Instead of just eating a meal somewhere and talking about it, hosts Steven Lim and Andrew Ilnyckyj eat three different dishes at three different price points (affordable, mid, luxury) and then decide if it’s worth it to spend more money. The guys bring an everyman attitude to the whole show, so they rarely pick the most expensive option. Available on: Hulu, BuzzFeed’s website

29. Booze Traveler

Host Jack Maxwell is the real deal. At a young age, he made money by shining shoes in local pubs and gin mills (seriously) and then became a bartender in South Boston. He found that you can learn a lot about a person when you take the time to sit down for a couple of drinks, so naturally, he hit the road to learn about what people are drinking and why they drink it. Available on: Hulu, YouTube TV, Sling

30. Chef's Table

Many cooking shows give you a look into the chef’s personality, but sometimes you want to go a little deeper, learn a little bit more. Enter Emmy-nominated series “Chef’s Table.” Each season dives into the lives and personal stories of six chefs, discussing their discipline and culinary talent while they prepare a dish. It’s the best of both worlds and a must watch for serious foodies. Available on: Netflix

Extreme Engagement.

31. Jack Whitehall: Travels with My Father

If you’ve ever traveled with a parent, you will be hard-pressed to find a more relatable show. Comedian Jack Whitehall and his father, Michael, hit the road together to “strengthen their bond.” Dad is definitely out of his element in this one, as Jack wants to be in the thick of everything, while Michael would definitely prefer a bit more familiarity. Available on: Netflix

32. The Amazing Race

Featuring 11 teams of two that race around the world to make it to the final leg and take home the $1 million prize, contestants on “The Amazing Race” face everything from grueling heat to freezing temperatures, while having to complete physical and mental challenges on a limited budget. There are many reasons why this show is so popular, but perhaps the biggest is the relationships between the partners. Just traveling with another person on vacation can be stressful enough, but the competition adds another layer of complexity to the relationship as they try to navigate through completely foreign cities and countries. Available on: Hulu, YouTube, Sling, Amazon

33. Survivorman

Canadian survival expert Les Stroud strands himself in the remote wilderness for 7-10 days with only his clothes, a one-man camera rig, his harmonica, a multi-tool, and often, items relevant to his survival situation or location. While it may not make you want to go off on your own in the middle of nowhere for days on end, it might motivate you to spend a little more time in nature in a place you hadn’t thought of before. Available on: Hulu, Amazon, YouTube

34. An Idiot Abroad

Poor Karl Pilkington is constantly pranked by British comics Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant in “An Idiot Abroad.” To be fair, it’s probably not possible for Pilkington to be that clueless, but he plays the part well and with quite a bit of humor as he’s repeatedly surprised and confused about the cultural customs of people around the world. Available on: YouTube, Amazon

35. Restaurants on the Edge

Love a good makeover show? Check out “Restaurants on the Edge,” a show in which three food and design experts revive restaurants that are on the edge of failing by re-connecting them with the local culture and food. The newly improved eateries offer a redesigned decor and unique menu, but the views throughout the show—filmed at restaurants in places like Malta, St. Lucia, and Hong Kong—give you a real idea of what the locale looks like. Available on: Netflix

36. Extreme Engagement

It’s your typical love story: man and woman meet, fall madly in love, get engaged, and then spend two years apart while man is filming another TV show. Okay, so that last part is not so typical, but when PJ Madam and Tim Noonan came back together, they decided to spend every waking second together and travel the world for an entire year to see if their relationship could cut it. Unlike most travel shows that visit the hotspots, the couple travels to remote villages and experiences life with tribespeople in their quest to “discover the secret to a perfect marriage,” giving viewers a real sense of place and a deep look at places many tourists never see. Available on: Netflix

37. House Hunters International

If you’ve ever dreamt of living abroad, “House Hunters International” is the best way to get a glimpse of life in another country—and where you could potentially live there. The buyers’ often-unrealistic expectations or lavish budgets have become the source for many a meme and with 115 seasons , you’ve got some catching up to do. Available on: Hulu, YouTube TV, Sling

38. Basic Versus Baller: Travel at Any Cost

“Vagabrothers” Marko and Alex Ayling vlog their 24-hour adventures in popular cities across the globe. Each episode starts with a little brotherly competition with a trivia question about the city to determine who will experience the destination on a shoestring budget and who will get to ball out. Whether you’re a penny-pinching backpacker or an all-out baller when you travel, you’ll get to see both sides of the coin. Available on: Hulu, YouTube TV

Scripted Shows Set Abroad

Midnight Diner.

39. Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories

The show takes place in a fictional small Japanese bar called Meshiya in Tokyo that is open from midnight to 7 a.m. While the menu technically only offers four things—sake, beer, shōchū, and tonjiru, a pork soup — the chef (known only as the Master) will create any dish that a customer may want using the ingredients that he has on-hand that night. The camera follows that night’s patrons out of the bar and into their lives to continue their stories, but still manages to capture the true feeling of the show—that food is about coming together but life is boring without a little joy every now and then. Available on: Netflix

Based on the lives of five single men and women in their 30s in Jerusalem, “Srugim” checks all the boxes for a binge-worthy show: controversial issues (in the Religious Zionist society), marriage problems, a character struggling with their sexuality, and a bonus for travel junkies—true cultural immersion. Available on: Amazon Prime, YouTube

Regularly ranked as one of the most popular TV shows of all-time in the US, “Lost” is about the survivors of a commercial jet airliner that crashed on a mysterious island in the South Pacific Ocean en route from Sydney to Los Angeles. The show was filmed at Mokulē'ia Beach, near the northwest tip of Oahu, making it easy to imagine spending a week on your very own deserted island. Available on: Hulu, YouTube, Amazon

42. Outlander

With elements of romance, history, and science fiction, “Outlander” is filled with sweeping landscapes, historic castles, and elegant gardens. Filmed mostly in the Scottish Highlands, but also in Prague (to capture the spirit of 18th-century France in Season 2) and Cape Town, South Africa, you can visit many of the sites where Clare Randall lived her double lives. Available on: Netflix, Hulu, Sling, YouTube TV

43. Downton Abbey

This series is set in the fictional Yorkshire country estate of Downton Abbey between 1912 and 1926 and depicts the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants. If the show inspires a trip to the British countryside, be sure to add Highclere Castle to your list—it’s where the TV show was filmed. Available on: Amazon, YouTube

44. Grantchester

Taking place in a picturesque 1950s Cambridgeshire village named Grantchester, this detective drama will have you dreaming of spending your next vacation in a sleepy British town. You can actually visit the actual town of some 540 people and take a walk through the Grantchester Meadows, stop in the pub, and sit down for afternoon tea, just like Sidney Chambers and Geordie Keating. Available on: Amazon, YouTube

45. Trapped

Though it’s been gaining in popularity as a tourist destination in the past few years, Iceland is still a country that feels quite wild and remote. “Trapped” captures that feeling in this crime drama taking place in as isolated Icelandic town, where the chief of police tries to solve the murder of a former townsperson after his mutilated corpse is found by fishermen. Available on: Amazon

46. The Kettering Incident

The Australian drama is based on the mysterious disappearance of two young girls, but the dark and enchanting landscapes are a central part of the show. This one might not have a happy premise, but the filming locations in and around the town of Kettering and Bruny Island in Tasmania are sure to kick your wanderlust into overdrive.  Available on: Amazon, YouTube

47. Top of the Lake

Set in a remote mountain town in New Zealand, "Top of the Lake" is a harrowing series about an inexperienced detective trying to figure out what happened to 12-year-old Tui, who disappeared while five months pregnant. The country’s South Island is home to some of the most stunning scenery in the world and the show gives you enough of a taste that you’ll want to book a trip to Glenorchy and experience its untouched beauty for yourself.  Available on: Hulu, YouTube, Amazon

When a group of eight strangers from around the world realize they are connected telepathically, they have to find a way to keep each other safe from those who find their powers threatening. The second season includes an astonishing 15 cities and 13 countries. From action shots in Seoul to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the creators of "The Matrix" and "Babylon 5” outdid themselves with this one. Available on: Netflix

49. Hawaii 5-0

Take a trip to Hawaii with this TV show featuring an elite state police task force set up to fight major crimes in the state. Originally airing from 1968 to 1980, there’s also a remake that premiered in 2010 and will end in 2020. Whether you watch the old school or modern version, the swaying palm trees and ocean views will bring back memories of a tropical vacation. Available on: CBS, YouTube TV

50. Marco Polo

Yes, this TV show is about that Marco Polo. Inspired by the creator’s own legendary trip through Central Asia, “Marco Polo” gives viewers an insight into the life of one of the world’s first explorers. We challenge you to somehow not imagine yourself riding a horse through the grassland of the Mongolian-Manchurian steppe after watching a few episodes of this one. Available on: Netflix, Amazon

40 feature films, 15 documentary films indicate rich harvest of films; Academy VOD platform revamped

Not less, but more films than ever have been selected for this year’s European Film Awards Feature and Documentary Film Selection. With more films to be announced for the Feature Film Selection (part 2) in September, 2021 seems to be a record year with high-quality films from all over Europe.

Due to the pandemic, the related restrictions and the fact that several key festivals in Europe take place later than usual, the European Film Academy announces the Feature Film Selection for the European Film Awards 2021 in two steps: starting with today’s 40 titles, a second part will be published in September.

All 15 documentary films selected are announced today as well. Together, the films form this year’s Feature Film and Documentary Film Selection, all recommended for a nomination for the European Film Awards 2021.

The feature films have been selected by a committee consisting of the Academy Board and a diverse range of European invited experts, the names of which will be published after the announcement of all feature films.

The documentary films have been selected by EFA Board Members Graziella Bildesheim (institutional/Italy) and Ada Solomon (producer/Romania), Katja Gauriloff (director, screenwriter/Finland), Kathrin Kohlstedde (festival programmer/Germany), Veton Nurkollari (artistic director/Kosovo), Orwa Nyrabia (artistic director/The Netherlands, Syria), Rada Šešić (festival programmer and filmmaker/Bosnia & Herzegovina/The Netherlands), Rajesh Thind (writer, producer and director/UK) and Ana Vicente (sales agent/UK).

At the same time, the European Film Academy presents a new VOD platform for all its members, which has been developed as part of a 18-month digital transformation programme in 2021-2022. The new VOD platform offers state-of the-art features and a better overview of all selected films, making sure the viewing process will become more user-friendly for all members.

In the coming weeks, the over 4,000 members of the European Film Academy will be able to view the selected films and (after the announcement of all films) vote for the nominations in the feature film categories European Film, Director, Actor, Actress and Screenwriter as well as for the nominations in the category European Documentary. Based on the votes of all members, the nominations will be made public on 9 November 2021 during the Seville European Film Festival in Spain. An 8-member jury will decide on the award recipients in the categories European Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Costume Design, Make-up & Hair, Original Score, Sound and Visual Effects.

14 Binge-worthy Travel Shows to Stream Right Now

Binge-worthy Adventure and Travel Shows to Stream Right Now

The Best Travel Shows & Documentaries to Add to Your Watchlist

When it comes to travel, the past year has been like none other. The global coronavirus pandemic has kept most of us close to home, and much longer than any of us would have guessed. Luckily, there have never been more movies, documentaries, shows, and shorts to keep us inspired until we can get back out there again. Check out a river guide’s guide to the best adventure and travel shows to stream right now. Whether you use Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Disney+, or Amazon Prime, there’s something for everyone.

For the Adrenaline Junkie

Free Solo – Disney+, Amazon (Rent)

When my partner and I watched this in a movie theater (remember those?!) the audience was acting like we were in a horror film – lots of gasping and covering of eyes. There are no zombies or chainsaws in the epic rock climbing documentary Free Solo (maybe they are saving that for the sequel). There are, however, incredible views of Yosemite Valley and the sweat-inducing story of Alex Honnold’s quest to be the first person to climb El Capitan sans rope. If you’re missing the adrenaline and endorphin rush of outdoor adventure sports, this is the film for you.

For the Dog Lover

The Pack – Amazon Prime

In our family, the only winner of the pandemic has been my rescue dog Hank. Between a home office and no air travel, he is spending a lot more one-on-one time with his humans. If, like me, you also consider your dog one of your favorite adventure partners, don’t miss The Pack . Hosted by Olympic skier Lindsay Vonn, this reality show sends twelve dogs and their owners across the globe to compete in various adventure challenges. With veterinarians and a dog safety team advising, the show does require you to suspend some disbelief about the, uh, competition part of it all (they rightly play it pretty safe). The adventure starts slow in Los Angeles but picks up by Costa Rica, where the lucky pups even get to do some whitewater rafting and SUP boarding.

For the Survivalist

World’s Toughest Race: Eco-Challenge Fiji – Amazon Prime

We all have that family member who treats even the most inclusive outdoor vacations like a survival epic. Keep them on the edge of the couch cushion with the Bear Grylls-hosted show, World’s Toughest Race . Fiji’s dynamic landscape creates a beautiful backdrop to the less beautiful aspects of a multi-day adventure race – teams succumb to exhaustion, trench foot, hypothermia, and more as they race for the $100,000 prize. Keep an eye out for the rafting section of the race, where you can catch a few OARS’ Rivers Fiji guides helping launch rafts into the Navua River Gorge.

For Future River Guides

Moana – Disney+, Amazon (Rent)

It was a fellow river guide’s four year old who first introduced me to Moana . And let me tell you, they don’t make Disney princess movies like they used to! Set in Ancient Polynesia, Moana, the only daughter of a chief, breaks tradition and ventures out to sea to help save her island. As a river guide who deeply respects the power of water, I loved the way the ocean was personified as both friend and foe. Demigod Maui’s hijinks were the perfect levity to a story about family, overcoming fear, and stepping into your own power.

For the Naturalist

Our Planet (Netflix), National Parks Adventure (Rent) & Night on Earth (Netflix)

While I’ve been fortunate to live in a rural river town with lots of outdoor opportunities during the pandemic, I sure miss long hikes, drives, and immersing myself in the landscape of a new place. Ambient nature shows help remind me that even as we stay close to home, the natural world continues to thrive and need our protection.

Our Planet ventures from coastal seas to frozen mountainscapes investigating some of the world’s most dramatic landscapes and the creatures that call them home.

Watching National Parks Adventure is the perfect way to decide where to head for your next outdoor vacation when you’re ready to travel again. Told through a recreation lens, you might even find inspiration to try a new sport (ice climbing, anyone?).

Night on Earth won’t help you sleep better on your next camping trip, but it will illuminate a whole different side of our outdoor landscapes and the critters that call them home.

For the Foodie

Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat (Netflix), Taste the Nation & Parts Unknown (Hulu)

Whether I’m hosting 20 river guests on a Salmon River sandbar or in the urban jungle of a new country, I’m usually thinking at least 50% of the time about what my next meal will be. So when it comes to which travel shows to stream, I always go straight to food-centered series.

Salt, Fat, Acid , Heat features chef, cookbook author Samin Nosrat. I’m convinced Samin, with her straightforward approach and appreciation for quality ingredients, would also be a great guest chef on the river (Samin, call me!). Her infectious enthusiasm makes for the ultimate relaxing watch as she travels from Italy to the Yucatan in search of her four core elements of cooking.

In Taste the Nation , Padma Lakshmi, cookbook author and host, brings her audience closer to home, traveling the U.S. to explore the immigrant contribution to the American food palate. I loved her reminder that travel and new experiences often exist right in our own backyards.

And of course, there’s always Anthony Bourdain, whom someone would certainly yell about in the comments section if I skipped (fair enough – he’s an icon). Nothing beats No Reservations and experiencing a new country through the late-Bourdain’s eyes and palate.

For the Family Photographer

Tales by Light – Netflix

Tales by Light travels the globe through the eyes of a photographer. Whether it’s dad who loves carting his DSLR around or your Tik-Tok obsessed teenager, there is inspiration for everyone as the show follows a number of photographers around the world in pursuit of the perfect shots.

For the Short Attention Span

Some of the best video shorts are coming from our favorite outdoor brands. From NRS to Patagonia to YETI, innovative filmmakers are flexing their creative muscles in an almost endless stream of five-minute to feature-length films. Check out a few of my favorites below.

  • NRS – River of Return , a beautifully-shot film about Shoshone-Bannock tribal members Sammy and Jessica Matsaw and their work to connect tribal youth with Idaho’s Middle Fork Salmon River .
  • YETI – Ingrained , which takes you from rural Wyoming to Chile via snowboard.
  • Patagonia – Becoming Ruby , because I’ve never been a very confident mountain biker, and Ruby (and her creator Brooklyn Bell) inspire me to dig a little deeper!

Which travel shows and documentaries are you watching right now to get you through these long months? Chime in below.

Best travel documentaries to stream on netflix.

Van life, boats, bikes and more take viewers around the world with these travel documentaries available on Netflix.

Many people would love to travel the world, but they just don't have the time and/or money. Luckily for everyone, Netflix is brimming with travel documentaries that allow viewers to see the sights and satisfy their wanderlust without ever leaving the house. Watch as people row across the Pacific, journey across the United States in a school bus, experience different foods and cultures, and follow their DNA results across the globe. There's no shame in saving a ton of money and living vicariously through others via Netflix! Here are 10 of the best travel documentaries on Netflix, as of February 2019.

Jack whitehall: travels with my father.

Jack Whitehall is an English comedian and actor who's most notably known in Britain for his standup comedy , but a lot of Americans might recognize him from Netflix's comedy/travel documentary,   Jack Whitehall: Travels with My Father. In the show, the free-spirited Jack is accompanied by his very posh, stodgy father as they travel to South East Asia on a popular "gap year route." Fans of Ricky Gervais'  An Idiot Abroad are sure to love this. This hilarious father/son duo makes stops in Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia, and their reactions are as wildly different as their wardrobes.

National Parks Adventure

Who wouldn't love to go on a tour of all the National Parks in America? That's a lot of ground to cover, but the documentary National Parks Adventure  allows viewers to see them all without ever leaving the couch. Narrated by Robert Redford, this series features IMAX 3D cinematography and unbelievably beautiful views of Yellowstone, Yosemite, Glacier National Park, Redwood National Park, the Everglades, and the Arches.

RELATED:  Beautiful Images From 20 Different USA National Parks (That Are Now On All Our Radars)

Viewers can live vicariously through world-class mountaineer Conrad Anker, adventure photographer Max Lowe, and artist Rachel Pohl as they hike and explore some of the most scenic places on Earth.

For those who aren't familiar with the Puerto Rican music scene, René Juan Pérez Joglar (known professionally as Residente) is a Grammy-award-winning Puerto Rican rapper, writer, filmmaker, producer and founder of the alternative rap group Calle 13. Residente the documentary follows the artist as he visits 10 countries around the world in an effort to follow in his ancestors' footsteps after receiving the results of his DNA test. It's an unexpectedly touching journey that reminds us all of how interconnected we really are.

Dark Tourist

Looking for a unique travel documentary with an edge? Join New Zealand filmmaker David Farrier as he explores the phenomenon known as "dark tourism," or traveling to places historically associated with death and tragedy.

RELATED: 10 Documentaries More Messed Up Than Fyre

The series has eight episodes, each with its own unique, macabre destination. Farrier visits suicide forests, walled off "ghost cities," dangerous townships, nuclear disaster sites, and even traces the steps of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. It's disturbing and fascinating all at the same time.

Pedal The World

Ready to Pedal the World without breaking a sweat? Join German-born Felix Starck on his 20,000 km mission to cycle across 22 countries over the course of one adventure-filled year. How will he survive, particularly if his bicycle breaks down in a remote location? Fortunately, Starck is fully equipped and ready for any potential setbacks (not to mention being constantly connected via social media). His journey is scenic, exhausting, and absolutely inspirational.

Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown

Unlike all of the other shows on this list, Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown   is a travel documentary featuring delicious and exotic food from all over the world. Hosted by the late Anthony Bourdain, this Emmy-award-winning show takes viewers on a culinary journey to the lesser-known places of the world and explores their cultures and cuisine.

RELATED:  10 Best Food Documentaries On Netflix Right Now

Bourdain is willing to go anywhere and try anything, and his open-mindedness and appreciation for culture, food, and travel is truly inspirational.

Conan Without Borders

For those who are fans of late-night talk show host Conan O’Brien , it might be time to check out his humorous travel documentary, Conan Without Borders. Fans can join Conan as he becomes a K-pop star in Korea, learns to dance the rumba in Cuba, stars in a telenovela in Mexico, films a movie in Rome,  gets bar mitvahed in Israel and more. There aren't many travel documentaries that will make viewers laugh out loud, but this is one of them.

Expedition Happiness

Created by the same man who pedaled all over Europe in Pedal the World, German filmmakers Felix Starck and Selima Taibi set out on the Pan-American highway in a tricked-out old school bus in Expedition Happiness.

RELATED:  20 Reasons Why Van Life Is The Best Way To Travel The World

The duo is joined by their dog as they travel from Alaska to Mexico, but despite the documentary's name, their journey isn't always full of fun, love, and happiness. Starck and Selima's trip is an honest depiction of life on the road, but their hardships are offset by the stunning scenery surrounding them.

Told through the memories of 6-year-old child, Given is one of the most creative and intriguing travel documentaries out there. In the show, surfers and "van lifers" Jess Bianchi and Aamion Goodwin take their preschool-aged children all over the world in the hopes of giving them the "ultimate education in reality, humanity, and humility." The family of five visits 15 different countries before their children hit kindergarten, and their son, Given, narrates his travels and love of nature the whole way through. Truly fascinating.

Losing Sight Of Shore

There aren't many travel shows out there featuring four tough women with a serious case of wanderlust (and moxie), but Losing Sight Of Shore  isn't another run-of-the-mill travel documentary. After extensive training and planning, the film follows four female friends as travel from California to Australia in nothing but a rowboat, which ends up being just as crazy and arduous as it sounds. Their journey is harrowing, emotional, beautifully shot, and well worth the watch.

What you'll watch:  Thousands of British commuters have  plenty to say about UK train travel, but in the hands of Michael Portillo, the divisive subject matter seems to take on a golden glow of nostalgia.

You know best, after all – you voted for the BBC's  Great Railway Journeys  as one of your top TV programmes in the last year.

Delving into the history of British rail, Michael reveals things we never knew about our local stations, including how an unlikely collaboration between London’s Crossrail railway project and a conservation charity is helping to protect birdlife in Series 11's Limehouse to Rochford episode.

Where to watch it:  Look out for your local station on  Great British Railway Journeys   on iPlayer.

10. Around the World in 80 Days (1989)

In Around the World in 80 Days , Michael follows in the footsteps of its main character Phileas Fogg, setting off on an epic adventure from London's Reform Club across the world.

Where to watch it: You can stream the series on Amazon Prime now.

12. Dark Tourist (2018)

What to watch: If you've watched the majority of travel TV already, here's one that may have slipped by you.

TV presenter David Farrier deep dives into so-called 'dark tourism': worldwide interest in visiting sites of nuclear disasters, destinations marred by danger or even death. If you've been to Chernobyl and Pripyat in Ukraine, you'll understand the fascination.

You can expect to see a trip to Turkmenistan, a visit to Pablo Escobar's former playground, Medellin in Colombia, as well as an excursion to Tomioka in Japan, the ghost town left behind after residents were evacuated following the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

Where to watch it: You can stream one season of  Dark Tourist now on Netflix .

12+ Best Travel Documentary Series

By alison - January 23, 2015 (Updated: January 30, 2019)

Over a dozen of the best travel documentary series to inspire your slow travel adventures, including the best BBC travel documentaries, on India, Europe, Global, and foodie travel.

Over a dozen of the best travel documentary series to inspire your slow travel adventures, including the best BBC travel documentaries, on India, Europe, Global, and foodie travel.

Even when we aren’t on the road, we’re still thinking about travel. We talk about travel, we read travel books and websites, and look over maps, planning our next big adventure. One of our favourite things to do together, besides actually travelling, is watching travel documentaries.

Over the past few years, we’ve watched many travel programs on destinations around the world. One thing we’ve discovered is, by far, the BBC produces the best quality travel documentaries, as well as the greatest variety. While we’ve found a few programs we enjoy on both American and Canadian networks, the vast majority of the travel shows we like are British.

We’ve compiled the following list to share our favourite travel documentaries with you. We hope they transport you and inspire you to plan your own journeys, as they have with us.

Table of Contents

No Reservations (or anything by Anthony Bourdain)

Pilgrimage (or anything with simon reeve), travels with palin (or anything with michael palin), green paradise, around the world in 80 gardens, the story of india, indian hill railways, german wanderlust, francesco’s mediterranean voyage, anything with rick stein, jamie oliver’s food escapes.

[Note: The links below are affiliate links and we will receive a small commission at no extra cost to you. If you click on the documentary image, you will be taken to your nearest Amazon store. However, as most of these videos are British, they aren’t widely available in the US marketplace.]

Best Global Travel Documentaries

best europe travel documentary

I will admit, without shame, I am a die-hard Anthony Bourdain fan. I have watched every episode of every TV series he’s ever done. I’ve read all of his books (including the less than wonderful crime novels and his fantastic cookbook ) cover to cover. If I could have dinner with any living person… it might just be Tony.

All super-fandom aside, No Reservations was the first travel/food documentary series I ever watched and it never ceases to inspire. If you haven’t heard of it, (um… really?) Tony travels the world exploring food culture and looks at wider world issues through the cultural leveller of food. The series ended a few years ago and Anthony did a brief series called the Layover for CNN. While interesting, it didn’t dig into the big topics as No Reservations did. Thankfully, Tony is back with Parts Unknown, which is the same No Reservations we know and love, with a new title and intro (phew!)

best europe travel documentary

To us, Simon Reeve is one of BBC’s best documentary presenters. He’s our age, adventurous, funny, honest, and not afraid to tackle controversial issues head-on. We’ve watched all of his series, which have covered everything from ‘the Stans’ to the Sacred Rivers of the world (UK Only).

The first Simon Reeve series we ever watched was Tropic of Cancer which is also worth checking out.

best europe travel documentary

More Michael Palin – If you don’t want to spring for the whole boxed set, our favourites were Around the World in 80 Days and Himalaya .  Michael’s newest series is Palin’s Brazil , which is on our wish list. Alternatively, if you want the uber-16-disk-collection, check out The Michael Palin Collection .

If like me, you’re obsessed with visiting the world’s best gardens, this is the BBC travel documentary for you. Hosted by BBC garden-guru, Monty Don, this series explores the world’s most fantastic and influential gardens. [on Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com ]

Monty also hosts series focused on French , Italian , and British Gardens .

Best India Travel Documentary (BBC)

Other great India travel series we’ve enjoyed:

Best Europe Travel Documentaries

Julia has also done series on walks in South Africa and Britain’s canals and railways. The newest series is called Britian’s Best Walks (UK only so far) and looks like it will be a winner too!

best europe travel documentary

Francesco also has series on his native Venice and Italy from Top to Toe .

Best Food Travel Documentaries

I could write a whole post on the best culinary travel documentaries (and maybe I will!). Food and travel go hand and hand and that’s probably why so many of our favourite travel documentaries are hosted by chefs (or at least people who love to eat. The following are great documentaries that also have a strong food component.

Although you’re probably not surprised I’ve singled out the India series, which is excellent, this legendary British seafood chef has a whole host of titles and destinations to his name. A few of our favourites (besides India) are:

  • Rick Stein’s French Odyssey
  • From Venice To Istanbul
  • Rick Stein’s Spain
  • Rick Stein’s Mediterranean Escapes
  • Rick Stein’s Road to Mexico

best europe travel documentary

Follow Jamie Oliver to some of the world’s best food regions, including Spain, France, Morroco, Greece, Sweden, and Italy.

We are always looking for great new travel documentary series to inspire us. If you have a favourite, share it in the comments below so we can check it out.

Over a dozen of the best travel documentary series to inspire your slow travel adventures, including the best BBC travel documentaries, on India, Europe, Global, and foodie travel.

Losing Sight of Shore

7.4/10 on IMDb   | 1h 31 minutes

This documentary chronicles the story of the four-women crew who set a world record by 8,446 miles across the Pacific from America to Australia.

The journey that occurred in three stages does not have the same women throughout the entire trip with women leaving and others joining in Hawaii and Samoa. A small camera on their boat records the journey and the women’s reaction to it.

You will feel the woman’s dire straits at times as they each take turns rowing the boat regardless of how they feel about their situation at the moment. Even when they are sick, tired, thirsty, or hungry, they know that they must take their turn.

Many of the most powerful moments of this documentary show the women standing in front of the camera and sharing what is on their hearts through days of victory and days of utter defeat.

Somebody Feed Phil

8.1/10 on IMDb | 12 episodes

Explore diverse locations around the world to explore local cuisine and the various stories behind those creations. Host Phil Rosenthal has real respect for the people that he encounters along the way, like the people serving crawfish in New Orleans, Lisbon chefs preparing pasteis de nata, and ribs in Buenos Aries. While some of the food is not what appears on most Western dinner tables, Phil approaches each with a willingness to try new things.

Along the way, you will experience Phil’s great sense of humor that you may already be familiar with from his work on The Simpsons, Everybody Loves Raymond, and other popular televisions shows. If you are a foodie, then this documentary is must-watch television.

Everyone is likely to love the humor that is found in this documentary, and the people that you will meet along Phil’s travels.

Dark Tourist

7.6/10 on IMDb | 70% on Rotten Tomatoes | 8 episodes

Each of the documentaries in the Dark Tourist series is loosely tied together in one geographical area. Host David Farrier takes you to little known locations that have an unusual twist.

For example, in Japan , you will be taken to swim in a lake formed by a nuclear explosion. This documentary keeps things moving at a rapid pace because you only visit each location for about 15 minutes. Farrier, who broke into the documentary scene with Tickled, adds his unique sense of humor to each episode.

Many of the episodes will leave you thinking about questions posed about what ties people together as humans. You are likely to love the news documentary style that journalist David Farrier brings to many locations around the world that are probably not on your travel itinerary at the moment.

Conan Without Borders

7.7/10 on IMDb | 6 episodes (Kuba, Korea, Mexico, Israel, Haiti, Italy)

Travel with late-night host Conan O’Brien as he visits diverse locations around the world, like Cuba, Mexico, Haiti, Germany, and Italy. While the first couple of episodes in this travel documentary contain a lot of Conan’s humor, the rest are very orientated to helping you explore what makes each destination unique.

This lighthearted travel documentary will keep you entertained as Conan participates in different cultural activities. As Conan laughs at himself, you are very likely to experience your happy memories.

The Dawn Wall

8.1/10 on IMDb | 100% on Rotten Tomatoes | 1h 40 minutes

This fantastic story chronicles the friendship of climbers Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson as they attempt to scale the 3,000-foot Dawn Wall in Yosemite National Park. While this story was widely covered in the media, this documentary takes you behind the scenes as the pair spends weeks climbing the sheer wall that has never been climbed before.

You may find yourself challenged by this documentary just like Caldwell is as the duo nears the end of their climb by the challenge of meeting their goal or by friendship as near disaster strikes the climb that they took over six years to plan.

This travel documentary that is also an excellent sports documentary has a broken love story, obsession, friendship, and dedication to meet a goal. Watch to see the thrilling ending of this documentary that will make you wonder if this story is real or Hollywood make-believe.

Along the way, you may find yourself cheering at the high points and getting depressed at the low ones. In the end, John receives the gift of realizing the most critical thing in the world is found right in his own neighborhood.

7.2/10 on IMDb | 87% on Rotten Tomatoes | 1h 13 minutes

Mountain climber Renan Ozturk, who you may already be familiar with from Meru and the Last Honey Hunter, shoots most of the footage in this travel documentary that opens near the summit of El Potrero Chico in Mexico.

You will find yourself challenged to examine the role that consumerism plays in the lives of people living in remote mountain communities and on the landscape itself. This documentary set to classical music is loosely based on Robert Macfarlane’s book Mountains of the Mind. Without being preachy, you may come away from this travel documentary, wondering what your travel footprint should be and if you need to change the way that you travel.

Chances are extreme, you will come away from watching this show with a more optimistic attitude and ready to make the world a better place.

The Best Travel Documentaries On Netflix For Planning A Post-Quarantine Adventure

Zach Johnston

Last Updated: March 17th

Sometimes you need a nudge to get outdoors and hit the road. Other times you need a full-on shove. And, in times like these, you need a break from the news and quarantine life to dream of all the places you’ll go when this catastrophe finally passes.

That’s why we put together this new list of the best travel documentaries on Netflix right now. These are movies that blend travel with the heights of the human spirit to, hopefully, remind you that travel and adventure are within your grasp. Or will be soon. Below you’ll find a round-up of our favorite travel documentaries on Netflix. Read and then watch to discover faraway places and witness the mad few who wander to the edges of the map in search of adventure.

Expedition Happiness (2017)

Run Time: 95 min | IMDb: 5.9/10

German van lifers and filmmakers Felix Starck and Selima Taibi tricked out an old American school bus to Instagram-perfection and set out along the Pan-American highway from Alaska to Mexico with their trusty dog. Along the way, the duo made a doc about life on the road, van life, and the general hardships and heights of travel. Overall, this is can be a hard watch as the camera almost exclusively focuses on model/musician Taibi with little to no reference to where they’re actually traveling through, which is a shame.

Add To Netflix Queue

Pedal The World (2015)

Run Time: 80 min | IMDb: 5.1/10

Felix Starck didn’t start off as a van lifer. The documentary filmmaker cut his teeth while documenting his 12,000-mile, 22-country bicycle tour of the planet. The film is the Instagram generation’s gateway to seeing the world through the eyes of pure wanderlust. The film shines in the nature of Starck’s mode of transportation and the harsh realities of riding a bike, literally, around the world. The film sort of falls apart in its inability to form a clear narrative but the overall thrust of the story is just enough to keep you from turning it off.

Amanda Knox (2016)

Run Time: 92 min | IMDb: 6.9/10

The Amanda Knox story is the perfect storm of travel and true crime. The film focuses on the Seattleite’s year aboard living in Italy and the murder of Knox’s roommate. It’s a fascinating case study of when travel can go horribly wrong on almost every level — from batsh*t crazy detectives to trying to bridge misunderstood cultural gulfs to the imprisoned foreigner’s desire to just get home again.

Losing Sight Of Shore (2017)

Run Time: 92 min | IMDb: 7.4/10

Losing Sight Of Shore is one of the better travel documentaries of the last decade. The film follows four female friends as they train, plan, and then sail (in a rowboat) from California across the Pacific to Australia. It’s pure madness. The film is harrowing, emotionally wrought, and wonderfully executed. It keeps you on the edge of your seat as you feel the great ups and harsh downs of travel on the edge.

This is a great way to spend 90 minutes any night of the week and, maybe, it’ll inspire you to get out there too.

Fire At Sea (2016)

Run Time: 114 min | IMDb: 6.8/10

Travel isn’t always about Instagram hashtags and wanderlust. Sometimes it’s about survival. Fire At Sea offers a harrowing glimpse into the realities of refugees fleeing Northern Africa for Europe — specifically Sicily, Italy in this case. The film juxtaposes how a small backwater town became the flashpoint for refugees landing in Europe. It’s a stark tale of humanity, suffering, and spirit to overcome and survive.

The Last Shaman (2016)

Run Time: 77 min | IMDb: 6.8/10

This is a fascinating and harrowing film. Produced by Leonard DiCaprio, the film follows James who has given himself 12 months to find a way past his chronic and crippling depression before he kills himself. To do this, he takes the drastic step of delving deep into the Peruvian Amazon to find real-deal shamans and go through courses of ayahuasca to cure his depression. We won’t spoil the documentary here but it’s worth 77 minutes of your time to find out what a combination of adventure, psychonautics, and introspection can bring.

The Free Man (2016)

Run Time: 84 min | IMDb: 6.1/10

There’s a sense of the mad ones in this film that follows Olympic Freestyle Skier Jossi Wells. Wells meets up with a boundary-pushing ski group called The Flying Frenchies who push the limits of human endurance and sanity by skiing the wildest and most dangerous places. This is a mind-boggling story of what on the surface looks like people with a deathwish masquerading as “being free.” It’s a wild ride for 80 thrilling minutes.

Mountain (2017)

Run Time: 74 min | IMDb: 7.2/10

Narrated by Willem Dafoe, this documentary looks at those who climb the world’s tallest and most dangerous peaks. Where the film really wows is in the orchestral score and jaw-dropping cinematography. This is the perfect film for sinking into a couch, maybe lighting up a little cannabis , and letting the images wash over you.

Footprints, the Path of Your Life (2016)

Run Time: 89 min | IMDb: 6.1/10

This film follows a Roman Catholic priest as he leads ten young men on a trip of a lifetime. The group is walking the 500-mile northern route from France to Spain on the Camino to Santiago de Compostela. The legendary pilgrimage has drawn millions of people (religious or not) over the centuries and this film shows the difficulty and reward of traveling a foreign land by foot, who you meet along the way, and who you come home as.

Fyre (2019)

Run Time: 97 min | IMDb: 7.2/10

Traveling for dope, Instagram-worthy festivals has become a clear part of the travel world in 2020. While sexy, drug-fueled times usually ensue when you arrive on some faraway beach to listen to DJs spin and do yoga as the sunrises, it’s doesn’t always work out. The Fyre Festival is the best example of how everything can go wrong and how that can ruin a trip to somewhere amazing. And, hey, travel isn’t always perfect and this movie is a great reminder of that.

The Dawn Wall (2017)

Run Time: 100 min | IMDb: 8.1/10

Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson’s climb of El Capitan’s Dawn Wall is the stuff of legends. Caldwell and Jorgenson took years to plan their ascent and weeks to complete it and it’s all documented in this enthralling documentary that serves as a sort of prequel to the Academy award-winning Free Solo . If you follow rock climbing, then you know how this one ends. But don’t let that stop you from spending time watching this doc. It’ll give a deeper understanding of how much actually goes into the background of these climbs.

Roll with Me (2017)

Run Time: 90 min | IMDb: 8.6/10

This is a pretty incredible film and feat. Former drug-addict and alcoholic Gabriel Cordell (who’s a paraplegic) decides to inspire his gang-member nephew by having him be his crew as he travels by wheelchair all the way across America. This film is harrowing, inspiring, and a must-watch as Cordell struggles to roll for over 3,000 miles through rain or shine as his nephew provides support the entire way. You’ll be left asking what you’ve done with your life by the time the credits roll and itching to get out there and do something epic like Cordell did.

15 Best Documentaries About Trains To Watch

  • by Jonny Duncan
  • December 8, 2023 December 8, 2023

Documentaries about trains offer a captivating journey into the heart of this mode of transportation, delving into their evolution, the communities they have linked, and the stories of those who have dedicated their lives to the rails.

With their rhythmic clatter and hypnotic motion, trains have played a pivotal role in shaping history and connecting distant landscapes.

If you’re wondering what a “Backpacking” website has to do with trains, it’s quite simple, I love travelling by train.

Trains are my favourite mode of transport and I have had some of my best travel experiences on them, from travelling around India by train for several months to taking the Trans-Mongolian Railway, a great train journey is one of the best things you can do.

Documentaries About Trains

Whether documenting the nostalgic era of steam engines or highlighting the cutting-edge technology of modern high-speed trains, these documentaries weave a rich tapestry of human ingenuity and the enduring allure of the railroad.

These films showcase the technical prowess behind locomotives and explore the cultural, social, and economic impact of trains on societies worldwide.

Great Railway Journeys (1980-1999)

I had to include this one first on the list as it’s one of the best documentaries about trains as far as a series goes, and an absolute classic.

Great Railway Journeys is a British television documentary series that originally aired from 1980 to 1999. The show featured various presenters embarking on train journeys around the world, exploring different cultures, landscapes, and historical sites.

Each episode focused on a specific railway journey, offering you a unique perspective on the destinations visited.

Some of the notable presenters from the early years of the series included personalities like Michael Palin, Chris Tarrant, and David Dimbleby. Each presenter brought their own style and perspective to the show, contributing to its popularity.

The series was well-received for its combination of travel, history, and cultural exploration. The presenters often shared personal anecdotes, and historical insights, and interacted with locals along the way.

The journeys covered a wide range of locations, from Europe to Asia, Africa, and the Americas, and is one of the best travelogue-style documentary series about trains to watch.

This is one of the first episodes from 1980 with a young Michael Palin presenting:

Great British Railway Journeys (2010 -)

Great British Railway Journeys is part of several continuations from the original Great Railway Journeys series mentioned earlier. This series follows the presenter, Michael Portillo, a former British politician, as he travels across the United Kingdom by train, exploring the history, culture, and heritage of different regions.

The series, as mentioned, is part of a broader franchise that includes various “Railway Journeys” programs, each focusing on a different country or region.

In “Great British Railway Journeys,” Michael Portillo uses a copy of George Bradshaw’s Victorian railway guidebook to navigate his journeys, comparing historical information with the current state of the railways and the places he visits.

The show often delves into historical events, industrial developments, and social changes associated with the locations featured in each episode. A short clip from the series:

Instead of going into detail about all of the Great Railway Journeys series, I’ll just add them here which ones they are for you to search for if you have an interest in a particular area.

They are all hosted by the same presenter, Michael Portillo, and start from the year 2010 onwards.

Great American Railroad Journeys, Great Continental Railway Journeys, Great Asian Railway Journeys, Great Australian Railway Journeys, Great Indian Railway Journeys, Great Alaskan and Canadian Railroad Journeys, Great Coastal Railway Journeys.

The series consists of three episodes and captures Lumley’s experiences and encounters as she travels across Russia by train. Throughout the journey, she explores the diverse landscapes, cultures, and people along the route, providing you with insights into the vast and varied country that is Russia.

Lumley’s Trans-Siberian adventure takes her through cities, towns, and remote areas, offering a glimpse into the history, traditions, and contemporary life of Russia.

The documentary combines travelogue elements with Lumley’s engaging personality, making it an entertaining and informative watch for those interested in travel, cultural exploration, and of course, trains.
