7 Companies You Can Trust for Great Family Vacation Packages

Updated January 9, 2023

Planning a successful family vacation is work—but not if you let a packager do the work for you. Buying a vacation through a tour operator frees you from the tedious details of deciding where to stay, what to eat, when to visit each attraction, and how to get to each place. Travel packagers take care of all the logistics, and truly expert ones know their destinations deeply, so their inside knowledge may even be able to provide you with special perks. We like these seven tour operators’ family trips—they cover a variety of destinations, styles, group sizes, and prices, and they have proven themselves with families over the years.

Great Tour Companies for Family Vacation Packages: Austin Adventures

Austin Adventures keeps groups small: It aims for a 6:1 guest-to-guide ratio and vets those guides for charisma, making sure the leader has a personality kids will want to follow. Family groups explore Europe, New Zealand , Latin America, and North American national parks (a company specialty). Austin excels in outdoorsy outings such as horseback riding, glacier trekking, kayaking, and bicycling (always on trails, never on highways). The company strives to add excitement with what it calls unexpected “wow moments”—like the reward of ice cream and brownies served after a hike to the top of Angels Landing in Bryce National Park. Many trips follow a 6-day/5-night schedule plan, although international tours are longer. On departures for families with teens, expect more pedaling, paddling, and hiking to panoramic views, such as in the San Juan Islands , Yellowstone National Park , and the Kenai Fjords region.

Kids’ ages:  6–12 (Alaska: min. age 7); 13+ for family teen trips Group size: 12–18

Great Tour Companies for Family Vacation Packages: Tauck Bridges

Tauck , founded in 1925, launched Bridges in 2004 to cater to the family market through deeper cultural experiences. In Rome , visit the Sistine Chapel after hours without herds of tourists (pictured); in Cusco , Peru, make chocolate; and in London , zoom along the Thames in a speedboat. On Tauck’s increasingly popular European river boat family departures (the company owns its own vessels), visit multiple destinations but unpack only once. In port, you and your kids bike through the countryside, learn to make marzipan, and visit a Camargue ranch to meet cowboys and their legendary white horses. On board, kids fly kites, cook with the chef, and learn local phrases. For cruises, Tauck adds three guides and a family host to the ship’s standard staff. For land trips, one driver/escort leads.

Kids’ ages: 8–17 Group size: 40 (up to 130 on river cruises)

Great Tour Companies for Family Vacation Packages: R Family Vacations & Olivia Travel

Originally known as R Family Vacations and rebranded as KelliGregg Travel in 2022, this inclusive company gears trips toward LGBTQ+ travelers and their kids, friends, relatives, and allies. In addition to expanding its offerings for grown-ups, KelliGregg continues to organize its summer highlight under the R Family banner: a big cruise featuring show tunes, LGBTQ+ comedy acts, family dance parties, theater camp, outdoor adventures, and a lot more.

Kids’ ages: any age Group size: varies per trip type

Great Tour Companies for Family Vacation Packages: Thomson Family Adventures

There’s something special about having a friend in a foreign destination. Thomson Family Adventures creates that connection with Friends Across Borders, a digital pen pal initiative available for families who book many of its trips. Your kids correspond ahead of time with local children whom they then meet during the journey. In places with scarce internet and computer access, ground partners personally print and deliver messages. The goal is to immerse kids in the culture, whether it's through activities such as swimming with whale sharks in Baja , sailing in Ireland , or hiking in the Andes (pictured). Some trips cater to families with teens or multigenerational participants. On departures with more than eight people, a Rafiki (Swahili for friend) travels along to keep the kids engaged. Trips always have one driver and one guide.

Kids’ ages: 8–16 typically (some trips accept younger kids) Group size: 8–12

Great Tour Companies for Family Vacation Packages: Adventures by Disney

Among the more than 50 itineraries in over 40 countries visited by  Adventures by Disney , you can count on getting hands-on local experiences, guides with a gift for storytelling, and time built into the schedule for parents and kids to be both together and apart. You and your children might craft bento boxes at a Japanese cooking school, try archery at a Scottish estate, and learn hurling in Ireland. At other times, adults might sample wines at a vineyard in Tuscany while kids are taken to pick herbs for infusing olive oil. During adults-only dinner nights, kids grab a meal and watch a Disney movie. Daily activities are focused on local culture, not Disney characters—although you may expect a few surprise appearances from those along the way. Tours of Southern California grant private access to the Walt Disney Studios & Archives and Jim Henson Studios, which are normally closed to the public. In Europe, Disney partners with AmaWaterways for river cruises. Overall, many ABD trips are 8 days/7 nights, but the company also operates shorter Escapes that can be booked on their own or added to an itinerary.

Kids’ ages: 6+ (though kids as young as 4 may be allowed depending on the trip) Group size: 38–40

Great Tour Companies for Family Vacation Packages: Sierra Club Outings

The Sierra Club , one of the oldest U.S. conservation organizations, calls its trips “adventures for a cause.” By leading organized rafting, hiking, canoeing, and volunteering vacations for families, the Sierra Club connects kids to the outdoors, hoping to turn them into future protectors of the environment. Family excursions explore the United States: Wind down rivers in Utah, Oregon, and Idaho (pictured); or base your brood at an Adirondacks’ lodge for hiking, canoeing, swimming, and mountain biking. On service trips you might do things like clearing trails in the Tahoe National Forest or working with animals on a Pennsylvania farm. On Sierra Club Outings, the naturalist leaders are volunteers.

Kids’ ages: 6+, depending on the trip Group size: 12–15 (up to 24 for raft trips)

Great Tour Companies for Family Vacation Packages: National Geographic Journeys

National Geographic Family Journeys (in partnership with G Adventures) were launched in 2020 as a subset of Nat Geo's 300 or so vacations for a general audience. These family-specific itineraries are developed alongside experts such as scientists and researchers, who emphasize sustainability and supporting local culture. On these trips, you and your kids might taste-test noodles cooked by teens learning culinary arts in Hoi An, Vietnam (pictured); plant seedlings at a tree nursery in Costa Rica; or fashion your own Carnival mask in Venice . Pre-departure, parents receive field guides with advice on sparking children’s interest in the area, and kids get tips on photographic storytelling. Two “Chief Experience Officers” (aka enthusiastic guides) lead families through the 8- to 13-day itineraries in Vietnam, Cambodia, Iceland, France, Costa Rica, Peru, Alaska, and other adventurous places.

Kids’ ages: 7–17 Group size: 20

Adventures by Disney

When it comes to family-friendly entertainment, it’s hard to beat Disney, and the company’s trip planning arm excels equally excels at creating adventures for families that span the globe and take all the guesswork out of traveling with kids. What you’re getting isn’t a tour bus driven by Mickey Mouse, but a focus instead on attention to detail, luxurious accommodations, and VIP treatment and surprises that you can’t get on your own, like a private tour of the Sistine Chapel in Rome on their popular Viva Italia tour. And Disney’s guides are the top echelon of the industry (they only hire about 3% of applicants who come from an international pool of 1,500 candidates every year). Select from 35 amazing itineraries across six continents including favorites like Yellowstone National Park, London and Paris, Japan, South Africa, Galapagos, and their newest addition, Egypt; they even offer luxe river cruises on the Danube, Rhine, and Seine. For example, adventurous families can head to one of the most biodiverse destinations on the planet on Trafalgar’s Monkeys, Jungles & Volcanoes itinerary in Costa Rica to spot colorful toucans and adorable sloths in the lush canopy of the rainforests. For a historic vacation, parents can take a step back in time with their kids on the Wild West Cowboys and Buffalos itinerary that includes the Oregon Trail, Yellowstone National Park, and Mount Rushmore. All Trafalgar itineraries include expert guides, accommodations, transportation and multiple meals and also include authentic “Be My Guest” experiences with locals.

Intrepid Travel

Intrepid offers a full range of experiences for families in their  Family Holidays  line, which are specifically designed to make adventure travel accessible for children by authentically introducing them to different cultures. Itineraries for these trips are appropriate for ages 5 and up (one of the youngest minimums for group trips) and include kid-friendly accommodations and activities lots of opportunities for kids to make friends with their fellow travelers, or even with local kids they meet along the way. One thing we especially love, special itineraries just for solo parents or for those traveling with teens (a rarity), including two great trips: Egypt for Solo Parents and a Turkey Family Holiday with Teenagers.

Thomson Family Adventures

With 90 itineraries around the globe, Thomson excels at offering something for everyone in their wide range of family-focused group adventures. Some top trip picks include: an outdoor adventure to Iceland where families can ride Icelandic horses; a Vietnam culinary immersion including a Vespa street food tour of Ho Chi Minh City and visits to organic farms along the Mekong Delta; a safari in Tanzania; and a Southern Italy sojourn that includes island hopping in the Aeolian Islands and a hike on Mt. Etna.

Big Five Tours & Expeditions

This tour operator , which started in Kenya as a safari specialist more than 40 years ago, now offers customized, luxury adventure travel to more than 45 destinations worldwide. To appeal to families, they created a “Kids Kouncil” consists of children ages 6 to 15 to help them create family travel itineraries that are especially appealing to kids. The result? The company’s first Kids Kouncil-approved tour launched in February 2019, a journey to India that includes experiences ranging from exploring the natural habitat of tigers in Panna National Park, to visiting the one-of-a-kind Sulabh International Museum of Toilets, to a fun and thrilling family Segway tour through New Delhi. Up next: Japan and Peru.

Brendan Vacations

Brendan is a regional specialist with a focus solely on Ireland and Scotland; if you’re looking to discover your family roots on the Emerald Isle or explore the green hills of these two family-friendly islands, this is your perfect option. Plus, Brendan offers a unique personalized touring option: Private chauffer tours where a personal driver whisks your family around the Irish countryside on a personalized itinerary that includes everything from a lesson in hurling in Kilkenny to kayaking in the Dingle Bay. Plus you can sleep in a real castle and make chocolate with a master confectioner, all without having to navigate the roads or make a hotel or dinner reservation on your own; a true treasure at the end of your vacation rainbow.

Niquesa Travel

For ultra-high end luxury trips with completely unique itineraries, consider this London-based boutique company that focuses on experiential travel with custom trips in far-flung corners of the globe. We appreciate Niquesa’s mix of whimsy and adventure that make these private journeys as much fun for adults as they are for kids. Two that stand out are “X Marks the Spot,” an island-hopping Caribbean escape that includes stops in glamorous Mustique and comes Canouan complete with a fun-filled family treasure hunt sailing around the Tobago Cays. And the “X Box Detox,” perfect for teens, a creative film-making adventure to Kenya to explore the Maasai Mara on a safari that even includes a helicopter flight to track elephants with the Mara Elephant Project.

Tauck is known not only for its international group itineraries, but also for its special focus on multigenerational family travel, with nearly a third of guests on its Bridges itineraries comprised of grandparents and grandchildren traveling together, or “skip-generation” travel. The Bridges itineraries, designed specifically for families, explore destinations around the globe ranging from European odysseys to African safaris, expeditions in Latin America to adventures in North America’s national parks. Tauck also offers family river cruises that includes a Family Host aboard every ship to facilitate special activities. Tauck also created a “Just For Kids” Bridges brochure to help get kids involved in the vacation planning process.

Abercrombie & Kent

Although all of the tour operators on our list offer immersive trips in global locales, A&K focuses on some of the most adventurous options, while also focusing on luxury and comfort. For anyone who’s tried to plan an exotic or remote vacation, you know how overwhelming the planning process may seem, which is why we especially like A&K’s   Luxury Family Journeys . Itineraries explore destinations ranging from Egypt to the Galápagos Islands, making sure your kids are unplugged and immersing themselves in one-of-a-kind destinations. The one trip we think might take the cake for memorable family adventures: An expedition to Antarctica, which the company promises will be a family fun voyage to the sprawling white continent thanks to its special expedition team and special family programming that includes workshops and special excursions to see penguins, seals, and whales.

Butterfield & Robison

These immersive luxury international trips offer small group departures that focus on specific age ranges, which is especially helpful for getting kids to bond with other kids on their vacation. A few highlights of their group departures include a December adventure to Vietnam and Cambodia for ages 12 and up that delves into the lush Vietnamese countryside and visits Cambodia’s most famous temple, Angkor Wat, and June departures for Puglia, Italy’s most bambini-friendly region, where kids 8 and up can snorkel in the Adriatic, get a first-hand archery lesson, and learn how to make pasta by hand. There are also private family trip options including a far-flung family safari to Botswana and a kayaking trip in New Zealand as well as easier to reach options, like biking in Quebec City or visiting the national parks in Utah.

Courtesy of Pelorus

There’s a special personal touch to every Pelorus tailored luxury journey . Before you commit to one of their itineraries, a representative will even set up a Skype call or meet face-to-face with all clients first to make sure every destination, activity, hotel, and stop is tailored to ALL ages and interests for every member of your family. They frequently set up totally different activities for different family members so that everyone on the trip is getting to do what most interests them. One particularly unique experience: Allowing travelers to safely climb the Redwoods in California and sleep in the canopies overnight (while also taking tree samples to help scientists on the ground). They’ve also arranged for a child to get PADI certified prior to a big diving trip—that’s right, before the journey began—so that the whole family could dive together.

Just for families

The clue’s in the title. These trips are for families only (including any aunts, uncles or cousins who’d like to come along, of course). As long as you’re traveling with a child under the age of 18, you’re a family in our eyes. Plus, unlike other travel companies, children aged 17 years and younger receive a 10% discount on the price of their trip.

best family travel agency

Travel with other families

Traveling the Intrepid way is a bit like traveling with a group of friends. These trips are made up of 3–5 like-minded families, and the kids tend to hit it off straight away, allowing you to enjoy some well-earned R&R. We often find the whole family ends up making friendships with people from all over the world, staying in touch long after the adventure ends.

best family travel agency

Small group sizes

Intrepid’s family group sizes are small enough to avoid the crowds and reach some out-of-the-way places but big enough for a good social mix. Our average group size of 10 allows us to hop aboard local boats, buses or trains, eat at friendly, family-run restaurants and kick back in traditional accommodation and homestays.

A young girl holding up a piece of pizza in Italy with her mouth open

If there’s a destination fit for family travel, it’s Italy – think pizza and gelato making in Sorrento, scialatielli tasting (fresh pasta) in Minori, and history lessons about Mt Vesuvius while looking at the volcano itself. Packed with food and local artisan experiences, you and your kids will get a real taste of Italy while also getting the chance to appreciate the country’s breathtaking coastal scenery and learn about its captivating past.

Where we stay

We take a lot of care in choosing your accommodation and try to avoid the big chain hotels. Your accommodation could be a locally run hotel in Europe, a jungle lodge in Latin America, or a small, family-friendly hotel. No matter where you stay, it will be of good quality and most rooms will feature en suite bathrooms and air conditioning as standard. We also prefer hotels that provide triple or quad rooms and always try to offer adjoining rooms for parents and kids when they are available.

From one-of-a-kind trips to all-inclusive beach breaks, Mumsnetters are on hand with recommendations for family travel agents that deliver great service and an unforgettable holiday.

What are the best travel agencies for families?

Best for bespoke family breaks: Take the Family

Best for beach breaks: Jet2holidays

Best for luxury family trips: Scott Dunn

Best for family adventures: Explore

Best for long-haul family escapes: Kuoni

1. Jet2holidays

Jet2holidays | Book a family holiday

"We’re going on a package holiday this year for the first time in ages. Last time we went abroad, our return flight was cancelled and it cost a small fortune to sort out and basically spoiled the whole holiday. If a flight gets cancelled this time I want someone else to sort it all out. With Jet2 it’s mega flexible, for many destinations you can leave and come back any day" - recommended by Mumsnet user,   Frazzled2207

Specialising in fly-and-flop beach holidays, Jet2holidays take care of everything from airport to sunlounger. With an emphasis on value, they offer all-inclusive holidays in popular resorts across Europe. Tailored for families, there are a range of single parent packages and discounts available and millions of free child places too. Jet2holidays offer a refund guarantee, low £60 deposits, comprehensive insurance and the option to spread payments interest-free.

2. Take the Family

Take the Family is a travel agency designed with families in mind, offering luxury breaks , beach holidays, ski trips , safari holidays and adventure trips across the globe. The experts on family holidays of all kinds, Take the Family will help you find the perfect getaway with their comprehensive knowledge of the travel industry. As an added incentive, Take the Family is offering Mumsnet users a £5 John Lewis voucher (for every £1000 of holiday value). Speak to a family travel expert to get a  bespoke holiday quote.

Kuoni | Book a family holiday

"I normally do DIY but have used Kuoni before and they are excellent. They can put you in touch with staff who have actually visited where you want to go" - recommended by Mumsnet user,   MrsMaiselsMuff

Kuoni offers a luxury, bespoke service with amazing attention to detail. They’ll help you create the perfect family holiday with insider knowledge and a face-to-face contact at their nationwide stores. Kuoni covers Europe, the Far East, Indian Ocean, Africa and the Caribbean and will help you plan a unique itinerary tailored to your family’s needs. Kuoni staff really know their stuff, and the company makes sure they can provide expert advice on every holiday they offer. Holidays booked through Kuoni are ATOL protected, and they stick to the ABTA code of conduct , meaning you’re supported both at home and abroad.

Explore | Book a family holiday

"Just got back from a family adventure to Egypt. Had a fab time... The country was a real surprise with amazing experiences. Booked through Explore and would recommend" - recommended by Mumsnet user, breward

Explore offers a great range of adventure holidays geared towards families. If you’re looking to take the kids beyond the more mainstream holiday destinations, booking a trip with Explore is a good move. Explore’s package trips are all graded from “Relaxed” to “Full on”, so there’s something for all tastes and energy levels. They specialise in small group holidays, so you’ll be teamed up with other families of about 12-18 people and an expert tour leader. They’re also great at single parent family holidays - their small group trips are a great way to get away with the kids with some like-minded adult company included.

5. Exodus Travels

Exodus Travels | Book a family holiday

"We went with Exodus on their jungle and beaches holiday to Thailand last summer. It was our best holiday by a mile. We had an 11 and 9 year old. The other children ensured they had company of their own age and the guide was brilliant. We were able to go off the beaten track and her local knowledge was invaluable. We never felt rushed and just had a great time. I would certainly use the company again" - recommended by Mumsnet user, breward

If you’re looking for a holiday that’s off the beaten track and want the added assurance of a knowledgeable travel agent, Exodus is a great choice. Their unique holidays are designed with an emphasis on fun, adventure and experiencing local culture. Whether you’re meeting orangutans in Borneo or touring Hanoi in a bicycle taxi, Exodus creates the kind of holidays the whole family will remember forever. The range of family holidays features age ratings, so you can be sure you’re not signing up for something that’ll be too much for younger children, although they don’t currently recommend any of their holidays for under 8s.

6. Intrepid Travel

Intrepid Travel | Book a family holiday

"I would recommend Intrepid Tours - some family trips are single parent groups and some mixed - I went to Turkey last year with them on a family tour (mixed group - some single parents some couples) and it was fantastic. Everyone really bonded and kids and adults all had a great time" - recommended by Mumsnet user,   imablackstarnotapopstar

Intrepid is another travel agency offering adventurous holidays tailored for families. Any group with children under 18 is classed as a family, and there’s a 10% discount for everybody in the group aged 17 and under. They’ll match you with 3-5 other families, so there’s adult company and new playmates for the kids built in. Intrepid make sure there’s never a dull moment, and you can expect to stay somewhere with a pool and have activities planned every day. Bestsellers in their family range include Peru, India and Kenya, with an emphasis on local culture and getting off the beaten track.

7. TUI Holidays

TUI Holidays | Book a family holiday

"We’re leaving today from a TUI holiday. We used them at Christmas for skiing as well. Main reasons were easy refund or reschedule if covid had an impact which is a thing for our destinations. However for ‘travelling’ which we see as going between cities, backpacks out etc we often book independently. It was a nice change using a package and having everything sorted rather than our usual backpacking type holiday" - recommended by Mumsnet user,   RedRum27

Formerly Thomson Holidays, TUI has been in the package holiday business for donkey’s years. They’re best known for beach holidays, but also offer tours, city breaks, skiing and Disney holidays. You can be sure everything will be kid-friendly on a family holiday booked through TUI - with children’s menus, entertainment and kids’ clubs, plus free child places available for lots of destinations. Opt for an all-inclusive getaway and you can be sure everything is taken care of and paid for in advance, so you can kick back and relax.

8. Scott Dunn

Scott Dunn | Book a family holiday

"If you can afford it you could do a holiday that offers a nursery or nanny service like a Scott Dunn - useful if your little one is already at nursery back at home. We went to Crete in June with Scott Dunn and they were absolutely brilliant, could drop off and pick up DD (then 14m) from their crèche throughout the day. She had a blast doing all the fun activities she does at nursery and I was less stressed with her being out of the sun. We still had quality time with her but also had a lovely relaxing time when she was being looked after (I actually had time to read a book!)" - recommended by Mumsnet user,   BridgetJonesDaiquiri

Scott Dunn know that, for parents, a holiday without kid-free time isn’t really a holiday. Their Explorers kids’ club for children aged 4 months to 11+ years operates from luxury family-friendly resorts in the Mediterranean, French Alps and Indian Ocean. The kids’ club will help you strike the balance between quality time together with your kids, and uninterrupted luxury for you. They also offer family-friendly safaris, activity holidays and tailor-made family reunions for multi-generational families spread across the globe.

9. British Airways Holidays

British Airways Holidays | Book a family holiday

"BA and on the beach were great with our holidays, BA refunded within 4 days of cancelling the holiday, on the beach refunded the hotel within a couple of days, flight refund took i think 6 weeks as they had to wait for the money from Easyjet. I didn't need to do anything either time, the companies processed everything automatically when it was clear we couldn't travel. Would happily use both again" - recommended by Mumsnet user,   ineedaholidayandwine

More than just an airline, BA offers ATOL-protected package deals with low deposits and a refund guarantee. With expert advice available on all destinations, they offer family-oriented beach getaways, city breaks, Disney World escapes and lesser-known European resorts. BA is selective about the hotels included in the packages, and you can be sure all details are taken care of - from on-site creches to extra activities, and from keeping teens happy to accommodation suitable for multi-generational families.

10. Audley Travel

Audley Travel | Book a family holiday

"We have always had a personalised service from Audley on a bespoke tour. I’m not sure how another company can do more? Everything is arranged for you" - recommended by Mumsnet user, TizerorFizz

Audley offers a tailored service so together with one of their expert concierges, you can build the perfect holiday of a lifetime for your family. With destinations and activity holidays for every age group and all interests, there’s everything from a 4x4 adventure in Oman to baby-friendly safaris in South Africa. Audley aims to give real insight into the countries you visit with them, utilising local knowledge and expert advice to make your one-of-a-kind holiday really special.

Is it always better to book through a travel agency?

It’s often more expensive to book through a travel agency, although their expert knowledge means great deals are available. However, the peace of mind an ATOL protected holiday brings is hard to put a price on, especially following the past few years of chaotic travel restrictions.

ATOL is a financial protection scheme that covers package holidays, and it means customers will be protected in the event of cancelled flights or travel companies going bust.

Most travel agencies abide by the ABTA code of conduct , which means you’ll be looked after if something disrupts your holiday plans - like building works at your destination or significant flight delays.

ATOL and ABTA don’t cover things like medical care, so it’s always best to get travel insurance , however you book your holiday.

Which is the best country to travel to with a family?

Mumsnetters say France is the best holiday destination for travelling with family . Drive over via ferry or Eurotunnel, jet down to the south of France for Mediterranean sun or make the kids’ dreams come true with a trip to Disneyland Paris - France has it all.

What’s the best family travel agency?

According to Mumsnetters, the best family travel agency is Jet2holidays . They offer outstanding value, combining budget-friendly package holidays with the protection you’d expect from a travel agency with 20 years’ experience. We're also impressed by Kuoni’s bespoke expert service, and Take the Family’s dedication to family-friendly adventures.

How we chose our recommendations

To help us create this list of tried and tested family-friendly travel agencies, we first searched our Mumsnet forums for trusted recommendations from parents themselves. We listened to the experts on what families want to provide a successful trip for everyone to enjoy, and weighed up a variety of considerations such as location, accessibility and budgets.

Our research allowed us to round up the best family travel companies that Mumsnetters rate to help you plan your next holiday.

Frequently Asked Questions

Vacationkids gives you the world.  If you can dream it, we can create it.If there is a destination your family wants to visit, we can make it happen for you.

For the past 20 years, we've partner with all the major, respected travel brands. If you're looking for a family friendly hotel, a cruise for your crew, a tour guide for your clan, a visit to a theme park or even all of the above...yes, we can do that for you.

The majority of the destinations we recommend have been personally visited by one of our team members. We invest in personal travel ourselves so that we can vet our travel partners and offer our clients first hand knowledge, experiences and peace of mind.  It allows gives us the opportunity to make connections with local, family friendly travel partners all around the world. These personal contacts is how we can create family vacation experiences that you won't find online.

Most Hotels, vacation package, tour companies and cruise lines all INCLUDE travel agent commissions in their published prices. If you do all the work yourself online, they “pocket” the difference.

By working with Vacationkids, you get professional, customized travel planning and the customer service you deserve. You won’t be frustrated spending hours on the internet, hanging on phone hold for eternity or wasting any precious time wondering and worrying. We'll be with you every step of your journey, at the ready to help and answer questions.

Please know the airlines, some apartment rental companies and a few other travel suppliers do not offer any travel agent commissions. There are also situations when we work with families or groups that require or request very complicated itineraries that involve a great deal of research time.

In these situations, our agents will charge a service fee for the time they spend working on your behalf. Please know you will be notified and must approve any and all service fees.

Vacationkids is delighted when we receive your email or call requesting vacation planning help. In return we want to insure that your family's vacation delights and exceeds everyone's expectations.

One of the travel agents on our team will reach out to you to schedule a complimentary 15-20 min. phone or video consultation. Having a full understanding of your family's specific needs, wishes, interests and dreams is necessary to create memorable family vacation experiences.

If you decide you're ready to move ahead with your vacation plans, your agent will ask you to officially register your full contact and payment details with Vacationkids. This is necessary because we often have to act decisively when it comes to making airfare and other reservations and we need this information at the ready.

To begin working on your custom itinerary, we require a minimum $250 service fee for the time we invest on behalf of planning your vacation. This is valid for families up to 5 passengers. Additional passengers will be charged a $50 per person service fee.  We will offer you a choice of options and will allow for 3 revisions of your itinerary. By revisions, we mean date changes, adding or subtracting passengers or change of destination.  Because travel pricing can change by the moment, we expect you're ready to confirm one you register with us. Your service fee with us is valid for 30 days.

Proper vacation planning takes quality time and serious research. Our loyal and dedicated clients deserve our full focus, time and expertise. There are just so many hours in each work day. We need to eliminate browsers, window wishers and others not ready to book their vacations for whatever reason.

We must devote our time to clients who are serious about travel. Those who understand and appreciate the level of commitment, professionalism and expertise that we offer.

This is how we insure that when you book with Vacationkids, you will receive the excellent service, care and respect you expect and deserve.

We work hard to help make your travel dreams affordable. Here's some of what we can do to help:

  • Our travel agents have rates that you don't. We have access to special rates not available directly to consumers via "book it yourself" travel websites.
  • Offer suggestions and alternatives for the vacation you want to help stretch your travel budget as far as we possibly can.
  • We don't waste your money . We customize your itinerary so that you pay for exactly what your family needs and wants. We want happy clients who are so thrilled with their vacations that they come back to us year after year and tell everyone they know about us.
  • We babysit your reservations - In some cases, if there is a sale or if the price of your trip drops prior to your departure we will get you a refund or credit.
  • How precious is your time? Hours can be spent properly planning a family vacation. Often the questions perplexing travelers are ones our agents can immediately answer for you. It's thanks to their years of training and experience.  If you have detailed questions or need to plan a complicated itinerary, we do all the work for you. We can make the international phone calls to get your questions answered. We know who and how to reach out to in order to get the job done, saving you hours of frustration.
  • Even if you do LOVE planning your own vacations - Talking to a professional can give you the ultimate peace of mind. We can take a look at your plans, make sure you haven't missed any important details and even offer advice, tips and suggestions you might not have even thought to enhance your experience.
  • Our agents can usually price match any "great travel deal" that you find yourself online (or explain to you why it could be a scam that you need to avoid).
  • We prevent costly mistakes that inexperienced travelers often make like missed flight connections, room category problems, proper expectations and more.
  • Save money on high interest credit cards with our Vacationkids Layaway program

Your vacation is an investment in your dreams. A vacation is full of future memories with your children. Your kids will only be this age once and remember... there are no "do-overs" for a lousy vacation.

Absolutely! Just like no two families are exactly alike, family vacations are not a "one size fits all" type of product.  A family's vacation needs and wishes change as children grow and mature. This is why our  Family Vacation Advisors consult with each family to create amazing travel experiences based on their preferred travel dates, interests, destination and budget. Our goal is to create vacations that exceed your expectations and are remembers for years to come.

Our travel advisors don't want to sell you a vacation. They want to become your trusted resource to create amazing travel experiences for your family for years to come. Tell us your travel dreams and we look forward to helping you turn them into reality for your children

When you have 3 or more children it can be tricky to find vacation options that are fun, comfortable and affordable.  This is why we offer all types of accommodations for any size family.

Of course, many families know vacations are more fun together.  We are very experienced when it comes to extended family vacations, reunions, celebration vacations and even destination weddings.  Our team knows how to make sure everyone, including that hard to please relative, is happy and has a fun vacation.

In addition, we've coached many families on how to leverage group travel perks, deals and discounts. We can completely automate this process for our clients so all they have to do is invite friends & family to join the fun. We handle all the work so it doesn't become a hassle.

We understand, "vacation anticipation" can be a lot of fun for many people.  It's exciting to think about all the places you'll visit and the things you'll do.

However, if an itinerary is not properly planned, your dream vacation can turn into a costly nightmare. Adults can normally deal with disappointments but it's an entirely different experience when travel problems occur with kids.

Travel professionals know so many of the mistakes travel novices make can be easily avoided.  For example, that cheap flight was priced accordingly because you'll never make your connecting flight!

Did you know you can enjoy all the fun of planning your own family vacation and travel with confidence?

Simply Schedule a consultation call with one a travel advisor who is experienced with your vacation destination.  Our advisor will review your plans, make professional suggestions and insure you understand all the fine print that can make or break your family's vacation fun.  The cost is $50 for an hour to ask a travel professional anything you want to know.

"I've known Sally Black (founder of Vacationkids) for years, and have a lot of respect for her practical advice.  Her book "Fearless Family Vacations" is a perfect guide for parents who want to learn how to travel like a pro with their kids."

Christopher Elliott Syndicated columnist at USA Today, Washington Post and Author of "The World's Smartest Traveler" (National Geographic)

7 Day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Camping Tour

This was an amazing package! It covered everywhere I wanted to see in the South West area and our guide (John) was very good and familiar with what he was doing, he took us to places that we would not have known at all if not in the tour. The only thing that was off putting as a non-American, not to blame the tour but more a cultural shock, was that everywhere we went (including this tour itself) at the end we were supposed to tip which I had never seen in my entire life in Europe. But overall a very nice and memorable trip.

Outstanding tour and tour guide. The trip was well organized, with half of the guests camping and half of the guests lodging. John, our tour guide, kept us informed and entertained us during the entire trip. Only criticism is that we had the same lunch just about every day. Highly recommend.

Majestic Alaska (10 Days) Tour

Majestic Alaska (10 Days)

I cannot speak highly enough of this tour. Kris, our tour director, as well as our driver Rose and wellness director Tyler, were all friendly, knowledgeable, and excited to share Alaska with us. Kris is such a warm people-person and consistently went over and above to make this tour what it was, including staying up one night and waking those of us on his list who wanted to see the Northern Lights. The itinerary was no doubt well laid out, but Kris added so many special touches to support Alaskan businesses but also to provide us with extra opportunities to connect with local Alaskans and have the most comfortable and enjoyable experience possible. September was a perfect time to experience this tour. My travel friend and I would highly recommend this trip.

Enchanting Canyonlands (Classic, 7 Days) Tour

Enchanting Canyonlands (Classic, 7 Days)

I wanted to say excellent, but there is room for improvement. The website could be better. It required passport information with no option for "Not applicable." As a U.S. Citizen traveling in the U.S., a passport wasn't needed, but I continued to get reminders to complete my profile. Fortunately, I got an email assuring me I didn't need the passport, but I suggest updating your website. The descriptions of several days said "relaxed start," but most days, we had to be up early enough to be showered, dressed, and have our suitcases ready for pickup by 6:30 or 7:00 a.m. As an east-coaster, that was fine for me because of the time difference, but normally, I wouldn't call that relaxed. The sites were stunning, the optional activities were great, although one that I wanted to do got canceled due to a storm and there was no way to reschedule. The lodging was great at each stop and the provided meals were excellent. Some of the suggested "on-your-own" spot for meals were not so good. The change of lodging plans at the Grand Canyon was disappointing because we didn't get to see the sunrise at the Grand Canyon or the stars late the night before. Sedona, The Grand Canyon, Lake Powell, Bryce Canyon, and Zion National Park were all fantastic, and we were blessed with great weather for most of the trip. Everyone should see these wonders of God's creation.

It was excellent in all aspects from start to finish. I am very satisfied and will definitely consider using tour radar and cost savers again in the future.

Four Seasons Resorts

As a mom and travel writer, family travel is something that I’m super passionate about. People often say, “It’s not a vacation once you have kids," — but I disavow that statement. Yes, there will be challenging moments. That’s a given. But exploring new places or returning to tried-and-tested favorites as a family is the stuff that becomes core childhood memories. And even if your kids are too young to remember, you will — and that matters. Plus, they can look back on the photos later.

While I subscribe to the philosophy that you can find interesting and age-appropriate stuff to do with kiddos almost anywhere, the truth is not that everyone wants to spend hours searching the internet for kid-friendly activities and accommodations. For many parents, it’s about picking an awesome resort that takes the stress out of planning — and executing — a family vacation. So, what does that look like exactly? Well, it needs spacious accommodations (bonus points for in-room perks like high chairs and tiny robes), ample amenities that cater to guests of all ages, dining options to please palates big and small, and ideally, a kids club. By culling down the consideration set to just domestic destinations, you don’t have to worry about passports, long-haul flights (well, save Hawaii ), exchanging currency, or visa requirements. There are so many incredible vacation-making resorts across the country, from sprawling properties minutes from Disney World to luxury mountain lodges.

Whether you’re looking for recommendations for an upcoming trip or stockpiling inspiration for the future, scroll on for the best family resorts in the United States, according to parents and travel pros.

Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, Maui

Attentive service and tons of extras for little ones make this an excellent pick for families with small children.

The hotel can get pretty busy during the school holidays.

With a list of accolades that’s even longer than its extensive activity schedule, the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, Maui — one of the best resorts in Hawaii for 2023, as voted by T+L readers and a WBA Hall of Fame honoree — is a legendary luxury family vacation destination. Montage Laguna Beach

The kids club welcomes guests as young as two years old.

This is one of the pricier resorts on this list.

Families flock to Montage Laguna Beach. Voted one of the best resorts in California by Travel + Leisure readers, the 262-key property delights guests of all ages with its laid-back seaside charm that reflects the Laguna Beach lifestyle, stellar service, and recreation opportunities. While you could easily spend the whole time sprawling out on the beach or lounging by the saline swimming pools, the wealth of activities —  snorkeling, kayaking excursions in the Pacific Ocean, and surf lessons — makes a compelling case for exploring beyond the cabanas. Half-day Paintbox sessions and collecting Montage merit badges will keep kids thoroughly engaged (and off their iPads). The residential-style villas provide an ideal haven for families. Exceptional baby-friendly in-room amenities include Bloom crib mattresses and diaper pails.

  • Standout amenities: Direct beach access; three saltwater swimming pools (including a children’s pool); beachfront accommodations; Paintbox and Paintbox Petite children’s programs; Montage Merit badges; UPPAbaby rental program; teen spa treatments; 24-hour in-room dining

Ranch at Rock Creek

Outdoor activities abound in truly gorgeous landscapes.

The resort is 90 minutes from Missoula International Airport.

“Surrounded by mountains, meadows, and streams, The Ranch at Rock Creek allows families to spend quality time together in nature — far away from the distractions of the fast-paced modern world,” says Carolyn Addison, head of product at Black Tomato and a mom of two. With horseback riding, sporting clays, fly fishing, mountain biking, and a bowling alley, there's really something for everyone. Morning and afternoon sessions at Flint’s Forest Rangers Kids Club gives youngsters a chance to peep at wildlife, learn about cowboy history, mine for sapphires, ride ponies, and go geocaching. The property also provides car seats, high chairs, cribs, pack ‘n plays, and babysitting services.

Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World Resort

Courtesy of Four Seasons Resorts

Also available to book at Hotels.com

The luxe resort is just a short complimentary shuttle ride away from the theme parks.

This property is more expensive than many nearby Disney resorts.

A visit to Disney World tops the travel wishlist for many kids (and adults). What makes a trip to “The Most Magical Place on Earth” even more, well, magical? Staying at the Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World Resort , a World's Best Awards winner in 2021. After all the rides and live entertainment at the park, the five-star property is the perfect place to relax and continue the fun. The family-fave highlights include the five-acre waterpark with slides, a lazy river, and breakfast with Goofy and his pals. While kiddos are off having a blast at the complimentary Kids For All Seasons supervised children's camp, parents can take a well-deserved break by the adult-only pool, play 18 holes of golf, or relish spa treatments. Plus, the rooms are luxurious and super spacious, so families have plenty of space to spread out. “Don’t miss Capa for rooftop Michelin-starred dining that offers views of the nightly Disney fireworks,” says Elizabeth Rhodes , T+L special projects editor, of her recent stay.

  • Standout amenities: Spacious rooms with private terraces; five-acre waterpark; complimentary Kids for All Seasons program, tennis courts; 18-hole golf course; adult-only pool; kids under five eat free at select restaurants; breakfast with Goofy; complimentary transportation to the parks

  • Starting rates: $1,295 per night

Turtle Bay Resort

There's plenty to do on-site, including 12 miles of hiking trails.

Meals can be expensive, but kids menus are available.

One of the best hotels in Hawaii for families , Turtle Bay Resort is a slice of pristine paradise on the North Shore of O‘ahu. The sprawling property boasts seven sun-drenched beaches, three main swimming pools (including a kids' pool with water slides), nine restaurants, stables, and a 468-acre working farm. It’s also famous for having a boredom-busting lineup of activities,  ranging from snorkeling with sea turtles and learning to surf alongside a pro to hula lessons and pony rides. My best friend recently went with her daughters, who especially enjoyed Kariel's Mermaid Academy. All the rooms have ocean views, and most also feature a lanai or balcony, which is particularly nice to use while little ones nap. For families seeking even more exclusivity, there are 42 ocean bungalows steps from the sand.

  • Standout amenities: Ocean-view rooms, three swimming pools; seven beaches; stables; championship Arnold Palmer-designed golf course; 468-acre farm; hula and ukulele Lessons; beach cruisers
  • Location: O‘ahu, Hawaii
  • Starting rates: $700 per night

The Ritz-Carlton, Naples

The beachfront location is hard to beat.

Keep an eye on the forecast during hurricane season.

The Ritz-Carlton, Naples, is a longtime family favorite. Thanks to a $100-million renovation, the five-star resort on beautiful Vanderbilt Beach has even more guests of all ages to love. According to T+L editor-in-chief Jacqui Gifford, the refurbished property “feels like a relaxed country club” with a game lawn, kid-centric sign-up activities like stuffed animal-making, and a made-to-order guacamole cart. Add to that water sports and serviced beachside cabanas. The new air-conditioned poolside bungalows are ideal for mid-day naps or a break from the sun (and maybe an episode of Bluey on the flat-screen TV). Rooms with balconies and ocean views wow. Book one of the accommodations in the new Vanderbilt Tower for access to food, drinks, and the kid's play area in the largest club lounge in North America.

  • Standout amenities: All rooms have balconies and ocean views; watersports; poolside bungalows; beach cabanas; club lounge; Ritz Kids programming; complimentary shuttle service to The Ritz-Carlton Naples, Tiburón
  • Location: Naples, Florida
  • Starting rates: $699 per night

The Lodge at Blue Sky, Auberge Resorts Collection

Auberge Resorts Collection

The resort has endless space for kids to roam free.

Activities may be better suited to older kids.

Admittedly, I visited The Lodge at Blue Sky, Auberge Resorts Collection — a repeat winner in our World’s Best Awards — solo while pregnant with our second baby. But the entire time, I kept saying I wanted to return with Miles. I thought of him whenever I saw smiling kids running up the gravel paths on a nature scavenger hunt, swimming in the pool, or coloring and eating burgers on the outdoor restaurant terrace. The spacious, contemporary Earth Suites mean families have plenty of stylish space to spread out. And the outdoor fire pits are perfect for roasting s’mores. For animal lovers, there’s a 30,000-square-foot indoor equestrian center and a horse rescue sanctuary. Older adventurers can do e-biking and axe throwing. It’s also super cool to take kids to Gracie's Farm to learn about organic agriculture.

  • Standout amenities: Hiking; fly fishing; clay shooting; heli-skiing; organic farm; 30,000-square-foot indoor equestrian center; Saving Gracie horse rescue sanctuary; farm-to-table restaurant; nature-driven spa; on-site High West Whiskey distillery
  • Location: Wanship, Utah
  • Starting rates: $1,299 per night

Montage Deer Valley

Spacious accommodations are especially attractive with reasonable off-season rates.

Some amenities and activities aren’t available during the off-season.

Park City is one of my absolute favorite shoulder season destinations . This past fall, we brought Miles to Montage Deer Valley and discovered it to be ideal for families. The luxury mountain resort and 2023 World’s Best Awards winner offers activities like archery lessons and snow tubing, a pub with arcade games and a bowling alley, a kids club, and direct access to hiking paths and groomed slopes. Our toddler had a blast playing with the canine ambassador, and I’ll never forget the glee on his face when he saw the adorable in-suite camping setup. Thanks to indoor and outdoor pools, guests can swim year-round, and adults will love the serene oasis of a 35,000-square-foot spa. Active types can rely on Compass Sports to take the guesswork out of adventuring with gear rentals and lift tickets, and the nightly s’mores around the fire is a sweet way to end the end.

  • Standout amenities: Mountain-view rooms and suites; ski-in/ski-out access; indoor and outdoor pools; six dining options; Paintbox children’s program; Montage Merit badges; UPPAbaby rental program; Compass Sports
  • Location: Park City, Utah
  • Starting rates: $450 per night

Ojai Valley Inn

Unique and engaging programming, including private golf and tennis lessons.

Camp Oak doesn’t accept kids under four years old, and many activities cost extra.

Even though then-11-month-old Miles was too young to join in on the fun at Camp Oaks during our Ojai Valley Inn stay, the offerings — which include arts and crafts, scavenger hunts, and science experiments — are sure to delight young guests (ages 4 to 12) during the day and weekend night sessions. I watched little swimmers playing with noodles and paddling around in the Pixie Pool before digging into a plate of delicious-looking chicken fingers and fries. The artist cottage and apothecary hosts daily craft hours to make soaps, terrariums, tie-dye, and more. Horseback riding, tennis clinics, in-room game night baskets, s’mores, and events like face painting and balloon twisting mean even more opportunities for family bonding. The adults-only pool, spa, and championship golf course are great spots for parents to escape.

  • Standout amenities: Family pool; adults-only pool; golf course; kid’s camp; mountain-view rooms with fireplaces, tubs, and terraces; spa; artist cottage and apothecary
  • Location: Ojai, California
  • Starting rates: $709 per night

C Lazy U Ranch

It's an 8,500-acre ranch with tons of outdoor activities.

It's two hours and 15 minutes from Denver International Airport.

Saddle up for Wild West-themed family fun at C Lazy U Ranch, an all-inclusive, four-season dude ranch in the Rocky Mountains. Voted among the favorite resorts in Colorado of 2023 by T+L readers , the property promises an adventure-packed vacation that city slickers and cowboys will appreciate. Guests can try horseback riding, cattle pushing, archery, axe throwing, fly fishing, mountain biking, and ziplining. Prefer more leisurely pursuits? Head to the creekside spa for massages or a soothing soak in the hot tub. The excellent kids and teens program gives cowpokes a first taste of ranch life through age-appropriate activities supervised by trained counselors. At the end of the day, everyone comes together to swap stories around the campfire before retiring to cozy cabins for a restful slumber.

  • Standout amenities: Cabins with wood-burning fireplaces; C.O. Bigelow bath products; horseback riding; cattle pushing; archery
  • Location: Granby, Colorado
  • Starting rates: $392 per night

The Resort at Paws Up

The resort offers a huge variety of activities, plus round-trip airport transfers.

A deposit is required to book.

A surefire way to get the kids off their iPads? Book a trip to The Resort at Paws Up. At this cattle ranch turned luxury family-friendly retreat and WBA honoree in the Blackfoot Valley, outdoor recreation trumps screen time. More than 35,000 acres of Montana wilderness is the backdrop for endless adventure. Spend days exploring 100 miles of walking trails, fly fishing on the river, ride go-carts, learn horsemanship skills, and do mosaic workshops with your crew. During half- or full-day sessions at the Kids Corps of Discovery, children ages 3 to 12 get to swim, paint, go geocaching, and more. That gives parents plenty of time to relax at the spa or participate in an adult-only wilderness activity. Vacation homes and glamping sites with deluxe tents (open mid-May through mid-October) are the ideal home base for families who want to be immersed in nature without sacrificing creature comforts.

  • Standout amenities: 70-plus activities; 100 miles of trails; meals are included; all home accommodation guests have access to a Lexus SUV; round trip airport transfers
  • Location: Greenough, Montana
  • Starting rates: $2,265 per night for two adults and two children

The Cloister at Sea Island

Also available to book at Kayak.com

Plenty for kids and adults to do together or apart; Camp Cloister starts at age three.

One-hour drive from Jacksonville International Airport; you may need to rent a car.

Named among T+L readers’ favorite resorts in the South , The Cloister at Sea Island is one of the true grand dames of family resorts. Guest rooms, suites, and residences have creature comforts like wood furnishings, deep-soaking tubs (ideal for bathing littles), and Mediterranean-style arched windows. “From tennis to crabbing, the 50-acre property supplies an array of activities tailored to all members of the family,” says Addison. Itineraries for nature enthusiasts include falconry, hawk walks, and visits to the nature center. Relaxation seekers can chill out at the beach club. “We relished the Kids Nights Out program, which ensures an escape for both the young ones and parents seeking a child-free evening.” While bingo night and family paint parties promise endless laughter and memories. “Horseback riding on the beach was the highlight of a wonderful recent trip to Sea Island, and I loved the family pool,” said Rhodes.

  • Standout amenities: One-, two-, and three-bedroom accommodations; Molton Brown toiletries; outdoor swimming pool; tennis courts; beach club; bike rentals; family paint parties; Kids Nights Out program
  • Location: Sea Island, Georgia
  • Starting rates: $600 per night

Big Cedar Lodge

Also available to book at Tripadvisor.com

The resort offers great value with loads of indoor and outdoor fun.

It can feel a bit like an amusement park.

Few places match the family fun potential of Big Cedar Lodge, a lakeside resort and repeat WBA winner in Missouri's Ozark Mountains. There are many ways to enjoy the great outdoors — whether renting a boat, fishing, swimming, playing mini golf, or rolling out a blanket for movies on the lawn. Fun Mountain, the 30,000-square-foot entertainment zone, ups the ante on indoor excitement with underwater-themed bowling, rock climbing, a ropes course, arcade games, go-karts, and laser tag. The waterfront cottages, log cabins, enormous suites, and glamping tents accommodate groups large and small. So invite the grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Why not plan a family reunion ?

  • Standout amenities: Entertainment zone with underwater-themed bowling, rock climbing, a ropes course, arcade games, go-karts, laser tag; mini golf; glamping site
  • Location: Ridgedale, Missouri
  • Starting rates: $369 per night

Chatham Bars Inn

The beachfront hotel is just a short walk to Main Street.

Many amenities are seasonal.

“I grew up going to Cape Cod, so it has a special place in my heart. And I love returning with my family. Our go-stay is the charming Chatham Bars Inn, an elegant and timeless oceanfront resort in the quintessentially quaint town of Chatham,” says Addison. “I fondly remember sitting out with my kids on the oceanfront veranda and watching the sunrise.” The property has a private sandy beach ideal for lounging, building sandcastles, and swimming. There’s also a zero-entry pool with cabanas, a kiddie pool, tennis clinics for all ages, and summer kids programming. The on-site dock and fleet of boats are perfect for family excursions such as whale watching, sailing, fishing, and lobstering. While authentic clambakes give off nostalgic New England vibes.

  • Standout amenities: Private beach; zero-entry pool with cabanas; kiddie pool; on-site dock with a fleet of boats; tennis clinics; complimentary supervised Kids Crew with interactive programs
  • Location: Chatham, Massachusetts
  • Starting rates: $650 per night

Know Before You Go

Decide what kind of vacation you want..

From the mountains of Colorado to the beaches of Hawaii, the United States is massive and filled with diverse scenery. Equally varied are the types of family holidays available to travelers. Do you prefer lounging by a sun-splashed pool? Perhaps an alpine escape steeped in rugged adventure is more your speed? Maybe it’s the thrill of adrenaline-pumping rides and snapping photos with costumed characters?

Consider travel time and logistics.

Traveling with kids can be stressful — especially regarding red eyes, changing planes, and tight connections. The more logistics, the greater the chance that someone might have a meltdown (and I’m not just talking about little ones). Depending on your kids' ages and jet-setting experience, it might be more feasible to hop on a long-haul plane to Hawaii. Some parents (and kids) do better with jet lag than others, so the time difference is also something to consider. It’s also essential to think about logistics on the ground. Do you need to rent a car? What’s public transportation like? Does the resort provide a shuttle service to and from the airport?

Be mindful of budget.

Many luxury resorts (with price tags to match) do a phenomenal job of catering to families. But there are plenty of more wallet-friendly options as well. You can also save money by skipping peak periods like summer vacation and winter break and visiting during the off-season.

How We Chose These Hotels

Lindsay Cohn is a travel journalist and mom of two young boys. The resorts on this list were chosen based on her personal experience and research and the first-hand accounts of Travel + Leisure editors and industry professionals — all of whom are parents. Many of these resorts have also been voted into their respective categories in the World’s Best Awards by T+L readers.

Understand [ edit ]

Overlooking the confluence of the Amur and Ussuri Rivers, Khabarovsk is the second largest city in the Russian Far East , approaching 600,000 residents and growing. It is also the capital of both Khabarovsk Krai and the Far Eastern Federal District . Unlike Vladivostok, the city has never been closed to foreigners, and retains a distinct international feel, rare for the Russian provincial centers – a feeling propped up by an increasing Asian presence with arrivals from Asian countries now numbering over a million each year. In turn, Asians come here to experience a piece of Europe close to home, with the fortunate effect that the city is spending huge swaths of money renovating the city, in which old classical buildings were spared much of the destructive effects of the 1917-23 civil war, to provide its visitors with just that feeling. From a European's perspective, Soviet city planning has unmistakably taken its toll, but it is still far more attractive than your average Siberian city.

Climate [ edit ]

The climate is temperate and monsoonal, with a cold, dry winter and a hot and humid summer. The average temperature for a full year is just 2°C, but covers over wide span of monthly averages ranging from a bone chilling −20°C in January to a quite warm +21°C average in July. The city sees an average of 686 mm precipitation in a year, but unfortunately the lions' share falls in the warm summer months. The number of sunny days per year is 70, which is higher than Moscow's 54. Climate-wise, end of May - early June or end of August - early September are the best time for a visit.

  • 48.49659 135.07283 2 Khabarovsk railway station ( Habarovsk 1 ), Leningradskaya, 58 , ☏ +7 4212 38-39-40 . Khabarovsk station, listed as Habarovsk 1 in most train schedules, is a major stop on the Trans-Siberian Railway . There are several trains each day bound for Vladivostok (800 km) and Moscow (about 8500 km) along the main Trans-Siberian line. Other options include trains #386 or #035 to Blagoveshchensk , #325 for Tynda, #667э for Komsomolsk , #943э Vanino , all on the Baikal-Amur Mainline . Vanino is an interesting option as it allows ferry connections to Sakhalin and further on to Wakkanai in Japan – more details in the Russia to Japan via Sakhalin itinerary. The international trains are Khabarovsk- Harbin , ongoing twice a week and Khabarovsk- Pyongyang on special days.

By boat [ edit ]

  • 48.46904 135.0581 3 River Port , Shevchenko 1 .

If you want to go to places upstream on the Amur river, the Meteor speedboats will often be your transport of choice, but only during the summer when the river is navigable. However, in 2008, the water level in the river was at a historic low, so that the Meteor traffic had to be stopped. If Meteor traffic functions normally, you can go some 1,000 km downstream to the Ul'chi municipal district (rayon), a region mostly inhabited by indigenous Ul'chi people.

  • Fuyuan – In spring and summer there are daily hydrofoil services to Fuyuan in northeastern China , departing from the ferry terminal facing the Amur river.
  • Komsomolsk – If you are heading for the BAM line up north, an interesting option is to take a hydrofoil cruising up the Amur river to Komsomolsk (6 hours), and catch a train from there.

Get around [ edit ]

Map

The best thing to start with is to walk around the center of the city. Have a nice walk from Lenin Square to the Amur River via the main street, Muravieva-Amurski. You will find all sorts of shops and places to eat.

By tram [ edit ]

The city has a network of four tram lines (there is no line 3 or 4). The most useful section for visitors is the stretch of the network running from the main railway station along Amursky Boulevard, before making a left turn down Volochaevskaya St. (near the market), and crossing Muravyov-Amursky Street one block west of Lenina Square, it then continues south intersecting Lenina Street roughly at its halfway point, before a stop at the botanical gardens (Lines 1, 2 & 6). The remainder of the network mainly extends into the sleepy suburbs. Line 5 serves the North, Line 1 and 2 the South along Krasnorechenskaya St.

By bus [ edit ]

The electric trolleybuses also has a few useful sections for visitors, Line 1 runs between the Airport and Komsomolskaya Square (River promenade, Museum cluster) along Karla Marksa and Mureava Amursky streets.

The regular bus number 1, is a useful circle line. It starts at the Railway station, turns down Seryshev street (a block north of Amursky Boulevard) until it reaches the river park at Lenin Stadium. Turns down Komsomolskaya Street (and square) and runs south until Lenina Street. It then runs the entire length of Lenina street before north at the City History Museum and returns to the train station.

The Far Eastern Museums [ edit ]

There is a fantastic cluster of top notch museums along Shevchenko Street, just behind the tall blue-domed Church of Theotokos on Komsomolskaya Square towards the river and stadium. Not only are the museums some of the best in the far east, they also make their home in some impressive century-old buildings dating back to before the revolution. After a visit, the nice river promenade is just a short walk away, so you can wash all that new found knowledge away with some pivos in good company.

Khabarovsk has the usual set of Russian mobile operators:

GSM 900/1800:

  • Beeline ( by Vympelcom ), ☏ +7 4212 64-90-64 .
  • Megafon , toll-free: +7 800 333 0500 .
  • MTS ( Mobile TeleSystems ), toll-free: +7 800 333 0890 .
  • Skylink , Dzerzhiskogo, 4 ( Near Amur hotel. ), ☏ +7 4212 74-44-44 . The all-Russian CDMA operator, having less subscribers, than GSM operators, but popular for faster and cheaper mobile Internet service.
  • Megafon , ☏ +7 800 333 0500 . new standart of mobile internet.

Check roaming prices, especially for mobile Internet, before using any non-Russian SIM card. Some mobile connection standards are not supported in Russia , e.g. those for Japan and the United States .

If you're staying in Russia for a week or more, it's definitely worth it to buy a local SIM card, but be aware, that a passport is needed for that. The easiest way to refill a local mobile account is to use an ATM. Most ATMs have bilingual interfaces, allowing numerous kinds of payments, including those for mobile services by local operators. You can also do it through terminals spread all over the city - like Qiwi or mobile shops.

Post [ edit ]

Satellite Images Reveal Where Russian Nukes Could Be Stored in Belarus

A New York Times analysis shows security upgrades unique to Russian nuclear storage facilities at a Cold War-era munitions depot.

A newly added air defense system.

A distinctive security checkpoint.

And a triple fence around a bunker.

These new security features and other upgrades at a munitions depot in central Belarus reveal that Russia is building facilities there that could house nuclear warheads. If Russia does move weapons to this location, it would mark the first time it has stored them outside the country since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Russia already has nuclear warheads on its own soil that are close to Ukraine and NATO countries, but by basing some in Belarus, the Kremlin appears to be trying to accentuate its nuclear threat and bolster its nuclear deterrent.

Russia’s president, Vladimir V. Putin, made reference to such a site early last year, saying Russia would soon be completing the construction of “special storage for tactical nuclear weapons” in Belarus.

The New York Times analyzed satellite imagery and photos, and spoke with nuclear weapons and arms control experts, to track the new construction, which started in March 2023.

The site is 120 miles north of the Ukrainian border at a military depot next to the town of Asipovichy. Some of the recently built structures there have features that are unique to nuclear storage facilities at bases inside Russia. For example, a new, highly secure area is surrounded by three layers of fencing, in addition to the existing security perimeter of the entire base. Another telltale sign is a covered loading area connected to what appears to be a concealed Soviet-era underground bunker.

Hans Kristensen of the Federation of American Scientists, who has analyzed the site , said that the nuclear developments in Belarus “appear designed to unnerve NATO’s easternmost member states, but will not give Russia a significant new military advantage in the region.”

There is no consensus definition of a tactical nuclear weapon, as opposed to longer-range strategic arms. But Russia defines tactical arms as those with a range of up to 300 kilometers, about 186 miles. Because nuclear programs are so secretive, it’s possible there are other locations in Belarus where Russia is storing warheads — and the Kremlin may have even moved some to the Asipovichy location, though all indications suggest otherwise. Both the Russian and Belarusian ministries of defense did not respond to requests for comment.

Nuclear warheads are typically stored close to military bases with the capability to deliver the weapons. The suspected nuclear storage site is in the same town as Belarus’s Iskander missiles, which can be used to launch nuclear or conventional warheads. Russia delivered the Iskanders to Belarus in 2022.

Over the past week, both Russia and Belarus have made statements about nuclear weapons drills. On Monday, the Kremlin said it would hold military exercises with troops based near Ukraine to train for the possible use of tactical nuclear weapons. On Tuesday, the Belarusian defense minister told state media that an inspection had begun of the Iskander forces and other nuclear weapons delivery systems.

Russia’s comments immediately provoked condemnation by the U.S. and NATO for “irresponsible rhetoric.”

“We are reviving Cold War practices, hence we are reviving Cold War risks,” said Jeffrey Lewis , an arms control expert at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey in California.

In 2023, as new fences went up to create a higher-security area at the Asipovichy base, a covered area was revamped, including a truck loading dock that now has a new roof, shielding any activities from surveillance above. These renovations are consistent with structures seen at other former Soviet nuclear storage sites. Seen below, a matching dock in Hungary contains an internal entrance to an old, tree-covered underground bunker.

William Moon , an independent consultant and former official with the Pentagon’s Defense Threat Reduction Agency , told The Times that the design of the Asipovichy upgrades, with triple fencing, one main entry and an emergency exit, resembles the Russian nuclear warhead storage sites he has seen in person. Mr. Moon, who worked on nuclear warhead security with Russia, said, “When we were working with their standards, they would require that third layer fencing.”

He said that in addition to added security, he would also expect separate housing for the Russian military unit that remains in control of the nuclear warheads. Three new buildings, which appear to be either for administrative use or barracks, have been set up in the depot entrance area, and an additional area is currently being bulldozed.

At the entrance to the triple-fenced zone, a security checkpoint — a covered inspection area next to a guardhouse — was added in 2023. These types of structures have become fixtures over the last two decades at nuclear sites inside Russia, according to Michael Duitsman , a colleague of Mr. Lewis’s at the Middlebury Institute. They are a “ unique feature not seen at other Russian bases ,” he said.

In recent weeks, construction began on what may be new buildings. “The details are still uncertain, but construction has clearly entered a new phase,” said Mr. Kristensen.

An aerial view shows two large concrete pads, possibly for new buildings, and several existing structures on reddish dirt.

An air defense system has also been brought in to protect the site. It was initially spotted camouflaged in mid-2023, including through radar satellite imagery provided by the space company Umbra . Since September, one of the air defense vehicles has been deployed in a field about a mile from the bunker. Asipovichy is part of nuclear history. The same site that Russia is building out today was likely used to store nuclear weapons during the Cold War. The Soviet Union began basing nuclear missile brigades in and around the town in the 1960s, according to William Alberque, who has been a director at the think tank International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) and a Pentagon and NATO official. It also stationed a military unit that managed nuclear weapons at an artillery munitions storage site, he said. After the Soviet Union disintegrated in 1991, all nuclear weapons were removed from Belarus.

Declassified U.S. intelligence satellite photos of the Asipovichy site taken during the Cold War appear to show these two functions. The southern section was thought to be for conventional weapons, with clearings and many storage buildings. In a separate, tree-covered northern section, four bunkers are visible, with a walled compound farther north — the exact spot where the current construction can be seen.

While the 1970 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty prohibits the transfer of nuclear weapons to non-nuclear states, it doesn’t ban housing nuclear weapons abroad if control is maintained by the country that owns them. Under NATO’s nuclear sharing arrangement , the U.S. currently has nuclear weapons in some member countries.

A U.S. State Department spokesperson would not say if the United States was monitoring any particular site in Belarus, but said the department is keeping a close eye on the situation in order “to ensure Russia maintains control of its weapons in the event of any deployment to Belarus and upholds its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.” An April 2024 State Department report said that the U.S. would not change its nuclear posture in response to the developments in Belarus.
