Colonization by the Dutch in the 17th century has left an ample architectural legacy, as did Taiwan's rule by Japan from 1895-1945. Grab a coffee at the former British Consulate, a landmark overlooking the bay. Art lovers can enjoy the outdoors and contemporary sculptures at the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts' Sculpture Park, and for a spiritual experience, a visit to the Fo Guang Shan Buddha Memorial Centre, with the world's largest sitting Buddha, is highly recommended.

Kaohsiung, Taiwan

cruises from singapore to kaohsiung

The canal-like Love River flows through the heart of this wonderfully modern city, and a boat ride along its shores reveals Kaohsiung's beauty. The former British Consulate, built in 1865, is a historic landmark juxtaposed with more modern sites such as the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, known for its contemporary sculptures.

Kaohsiung cruise port

Region Asia

Local Time 2024-09-04 12:01

Port Kaohsiung cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Kaohsiung, Taiwan China. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Port Kaohsiung is the largest seaport in Taiwan. It is located on the island's southwestern coast, facing Taiwan Strait. The city is ranked Taiwan's second largest by population (urban over 2,54 million, metro around 2,8 million) - after New Taipei City (around 8,5 million).

Other cruise port cities in Taiwan include Keelung (Taipei) , Taichung , Hualien , Anping, as well as Magong/Penghu .

Since its establishment by the Chinese in the 17th century, Kaohsiung has grown into a major transportation, economic, manufacturing, industrial and shipbuilding center. Among the main city landmarks are Tuntex Sky Tower, Kaohsiung Arena, Kaohsiung Harbor, ferris wheel. Newly developed, the city is also popular among tourists for its huge number of night markets, shopping streets, new leisure parks (Pier-2 Art Center, E-DA Theme Park).

Natural attractions include Shoushan (Monkey Mountain), Love River, Qijin, Xiziwan Bay, Dapingding Tropical Botanical Garden, Yushan National Park. Among the historical attractions are the Old City of Zuoying, the former British Consulate (Takao), sugar and crop factories (built during Taiwan's occupation by Japan, 1895-1945).

Port Kaohsiung

Port Kaohsiung (locode TWKHH) has Taiwan's biggest harbour but is not officially part of the city.

Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit (city's subway) was inaugurated in 2008. Here were hosted World Games 2009 (sports not included in World Olympics).

In December 2017, the company Van Oord (based in Rotterdam Holland , specializing in dredging, marine engineering, and offshore energy projects) completed the Port Kaohsiung expansion. The project (by Taiwan International Ports Corporation) awarded the contract to the Dutch company in 2015. The works were completed 8 months ahead of schedule, creating a total of 250 hectares (2,5 km2 / 1 ml2) of new land for the new Intercontinental Container Center. The new area will accommodate many containership cargo terminals and docking wharves, some of which are able to handle the world's largest container ships (up to 22,000 TEUs / containers).

Being Taiwan's largest port, Kaohsiung handles around 150 vessels daily. The port's container shipping annual volume is over 10 million TEUs (containers).

In 2017 (March 21 through May 30),  Star Cruises (GHK brand) homeported in Kaohsiung the SuperStar Virgo ship . The 5-night / 6-day roundtrip itinerary (themed "Golden Triangle Journey") included Manila  (Philippines), Laoag (Philippines) and Hong Kong (China). The itinerary allowed Taiwanese tourists to embark/disembark in Hong Kong, Manila or Kaohsiung. Star Cruises' early booking program offered pricing from TWD 18800/USD 620  (per person with double occupancy) and standard pricing TWD 31333/USD 1040 pp. Third and fourth passengers received additional 50% discount.

In the pre-COVID 2019, Kaohsiung Port handled 29 international cruise ship calls.

Kaohsiung cruise terminal

The new Kaohsiung cruise terminal is still under construction, with scheduled completion by the end of 2019. It will have capacity to handle  world's largest passenger ships  of  Royal Caribbean 's Oasis-class (LOA length 362 m, capacity 6370 passengers plus 2400 crew).

Among project's features is the boardwalk (connecting the complex with the Maritime Cultural and Pop Music Center), also with premium shopping and dining districts and several recreation areas located along the port's waterfront.

Resorts World Cruises adds Kaohsiung to itinerary

cruises from singapore to kaohsiung

Resorts World Cruises has added Kaohsiung to Resorts World One ’s itinerary, following the announcement of the ship commencing high seas cruises from Hong Kong starting March 10. Kaohsiung will also become a double homeport for the Resorts World One .

Beginning April 2, Resorts World One will sail from Hong Kong to Kaohsiung, offering four days/three nights cruises departing Sundays and three days/two nights cruises departing Wednesdays, as well as the three days/two nights weekend high seas cruises departing Fridays.

Those from Taiwan can embark the ship in Kaohsiung from April 4 onwards, starting with a three days/two nights cruise to Hong Kong. Resorts World One will subsequently offer weekly round-trip cruises to Hong Kong departing on Mondays and Thursdays – these cruises from Kaohsiung will also support the Hello Hong Kong campaign by the Hong Kong government to increase the number of tourists.

Passengers travelling to either destination can choose to disembark for a land tour, stay for a couple of days, thereafter re-embark the ship to sail back to their original homeport.

Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, executive chairman, Resorts World Cruises, said: “Hong Kong and Kaohsiung will both benefit from increased number of passengers carried by Resorts World One and increased Fly-Cruise and Rail-Cruise passengers, who will have pre and post cruise stays in either destination.”

With a capacity of over 1,856 passengers, the Resorts World One is set to reignite the cruise sector and the various tourism industries in Taiwan and Hong Kong. With two sailings a week to Kaohsiung, there will be 78 calls in 2023.

In addition, the homeport deployment in Kaohsiung is timely as the Kaohsiung Cruise Terminal has developed an integrated shopping, dining and entertainment district.

“The homeport deployment is a clear testament of our unwavering commitment in rejuvenating the cruise tourism sector in Taiwan and the region,” said Michael Goh, president, Resorts World Cruises.

Port guide: Kaohsiung, Taiwan

T his city on Taiwan’s southern tip has lately undergone a wonderful overhaul to become one of Asia’s most relaxed and easy-to-visit destinations.

Who goes there

Celebrity, Holland America, Oceania, Ponant, Regent Seven Seas and Royal Caribbean are among the gamut of cruise lines that visit, but the list is growing as Japan booms in cruise popularity; Taiwan often features on Japan itineraries. Kaohsiung is also a port call on wider Asian cruises between South-East Asia or Hong Kong and Japan.

Arrival is delightful. You sail between two breakwaters, then through a very narrow gap between headlands, one topped by a lighthouse and old fort. Then you glide down a busy working harbour of cranes, container ships and concrete apartment blocks so close you can see people eating breakfast through the windows. In the background, startling new buildings resemble space rockets and a giant honeycomb. Don’t be put off by the grittiness: this heavy-industry centre is a forward-looking, arty, relaxed and agreeable city.

Berth rites

Kaohsiung Port Cruise Terminal, opened in early 2023, is part of the city’s strategy to attract more tourists. Rumour has it the architectural design was inspired by a whale, fluke uplifted, although the striking building looks more like a giant metal tube bent in the middle. It’s light-filled, efficiently organised, and connects to boardwalks along the waterfront. Enthusiastic locals often wave from the terminal’s outdoor decks.

Going ashore

The best thing about Kaohsiung is that it doesn’t have big-name sights, nor any of the chaos and crowds of some Asian cities. Just set about strolling, enjoying its laid-back vibe, and taking in its recent transformation into Taiwan’s most agreeable city, helped along by an enviable subtropical climate. Check out the promenades along Love River, the lively harbour-side Pier-2 Art Centre, and the Yancheng neighbourhood behind, where smoky temples sit beside noodle shops. The Museum of Fine Arts has a significant collection of indigenous Austronesian art.

Lotus Pond in northern Kaohsiung, especially if you haven’t seen many Chinese temples before. It’s inconveniently located from the cruise terminal but an easy 30-minute taxi or train ride; it also features on organised shore excursions. Two outrageously kitsch Daoist pavilions, one fronted by a giant tiger and the other a dragon, sit out in a lake across zigzag bridges. Further around the shoreline, the Spring and Autumn Pavilions are ornately decorated with woodwork, gilt and gaudy deities.

Kaohsiung is flat and well laid out, making it a great city for walking or cycling. You can use the yellow-and-orange bicycles from any of more than 1200 stations of the public YouBike system with your credit card, but you’ll need Wi-Fi on your phone.

Beef noodle soup is considered Taiwan’s national dish. Slow-roasted duck with rice is one of Kaohsiung’s best-loved dishes, along with fish congee, scallion pancakes, and a warming mutton hotpot. You’ll also find Hakka snacks such as sticky rice and pork wrapped in banana leaf.

For a between-meals nibble, try pineapple buns or deep-fried rice balls – crispy on the outside, soft in the middle – sprinkled with sugar and sesame seeds. Eating at Kaohsiung’s night markets is terrific but alas, your ship will have sailed before they get going.

Further afield

There are two main options. Cijin Island is a popular escape a short ferry ride away, and has Dutch-era history, seafood restaurants and souvenir shopping, but its appeal is probably greater to residents than Australians. More impressive is Fo Guang Shan, a gigantic contemporary temple complex with an enormous seated Buddha, rows of pagodas and a museum set in hills.

Kaohsiung Taiwan Port Guide

Though the capital city, Taipei, tends to get most of the attention when it comes to traveling to Taiwan, it’s time for Kaohsiung to have its day in the sun. After all, Kaohsiung is the second-largest city in Taiwan and a powerhouse for both industry and culture that has developed a quirky, colorful style all its own.

Stopped in on a Kaohsiung cruise, you’ll experience the romance of Love River or the Instagrammable perfection of the Dome of Light, the largest public glass installation in the world. Then there’s the Pier 2 Art District, a new area where funky installations and street art collide with the cruise harbor. No matter how you choose to spend the day in Kaohsiung during your Asia cruise , the city will quickly capture you.

While we don't currently sail to Kaohsiung, you can still discover the beauty of Taiwan on one of our cruises to Taipei . Browse our cruises to Taiwan below.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to kaohsiung.

The romantic in all of us comes out at Love River in Kaohsiung, where you can take a gondola ride running through the south of the city. Cafes and bars line the riverfront, reminiscent of other romantic destinations like Venice and Paris.

Tiánliáo Stone Temple

This uniquely designed Taoist temple built from local stones and shells is one of the most memorable sights you’ll see in Kaohsiung. It’s a fantastical, surreal take on a sacred site, built by migrant road workers who were once stranded in the Kaohsiung area. Each day, the temple workers make a vegetarian meal to feed visitors, so it’s best to stay for lunch.

One of the best budget-friendly things to do in Kaohsiung is take a trip to Lotus Lake, where you can explore over 100 acres of walking trails and loops around the scenic artificial lake. There’s even a colorful installation of a dragon where, as legend tells it, you’ll have good luck when you run into its mouth.

Dome of Light

The world’s largest glass installation can be found in Kaohsiung. The Dome of Light holds trippy and colorful light shows each day. It’s part of the Formosa Boulevard MRT station, sure, but it’s a beautiful piece of art you shouldn’t miss.

Learn More About Kaohsiung Shore Excursions

Top things to do in kaohsiung, explore the night markets.

On a Kaohsiung cruise, the night markets are practically a rite of passage. Surround yourself in the bright lights and hunger-inducing smells of these markets, which offer everything from clothing and souvenirs to every type of Taiwanese bite available. You can eat your way through Kaohsiung simply by hopping around its night markets.

Tour the Pier 2 Art District

Located near the cruise harbor in the very industrial warehouse district is the quirky Pier 2 Art District. Think Miami’s Wynwood Walls, a neighborhood of compelling street art and installations, transported to South Taiwan in the middle of a busy commercial port. The art district pays stunning tribute to Kaohsiung’s underground and emerging art scene. Photos are a must.

Visit the 85 Sky Tower

No trip to Taiwan’s second-biggest city is complete without a great view, and the 85 Sky Tower delivers. When you ascend to the 75th floor, you’ll be welcomed by a panoramic view of Kaohsiung. Whip out your phone or camera and snap away, but you just might find that photos don’t even do Kaohsiung’s skyline justice.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Kaohsiung Cruise Port

During your travels to Taiwan, you have to experience authentic Taiwanese cuisine. After all, the food here is comprised of an incredible mix of inspiration from China, Japan, and even American influence. While strolling through the local night markets, don’t miss the chance to participate in the “small eats” trend in Taiwanese culture, where you can load up on multiple small plates to enjoy several different dishes in one meal.

Of course, Taiwan is famous for dishes like beef noodle soup, slowly braised and bathed in soft noodles. The hotpot is a staple in the home of nearly everyone in Taiwan. Try gua bo, the Taiwanese equivalent of a juicy pork belly burger. Green onion (also called scallion) pancakes are a fixture on almost every menu in the city. Savory to comforting, sweet pineapple cake to stinky tofu, three’s something for every palate here.

Culture & History of the Kaohsiung Cruise Port

Aboriginal populations lived in what we now call Kaohsiung for thousands of years, but by the 12th century, Genghis Khan had claimed the area as part of the Chinese empire. In the 17th century, Europeans arrived in South Taiwan, specifically the Dutch, who were then challenged by both the Spanish and Chinese wanting control of the territory. It was during the Chinese Qing dynasty that Kaohsiung became a critically important port city, and its role in trade sped up urban development over the 19th century. In 1895, claim to Taiwan was granted as a bargaining chip to end the war between Japan and China, and Japan took control of Kaohsiung. Today, the city is an industrial hub and in the process of a major restoration. More and more cultural events, art projects, and attractions are popping up every year.

Kaohsiung Port Facilities & Location

Upon arriving at the Kaohsiung cruise port, most passengers take the public transit system, the KMRT, to the center of town. Today, it’s a major commercial and cargo port in the process of a cultural renaissance and renovation from an industrial town to a trendy metropolis. The growth of the cruise port is all part of a plan to get more international travelers and visitors to explore this part of Taiwan.

Transportation in Kaohsiung

Once you get into the city, Kaohsiung’s main sights are well within walking distance of one another. The city has an extensive bus and train network that makes navigating fairly straightforward, but few fellow passengers will likely speak English. Bus routes are mapped in English throughout the city. The MRT, or the public transit system here, also has signs in English.

Shopping Near the Kaohsiung Cruise Port

Kaohsiung’s shopping mostly centers around the bustling and extensive night market scene, of which there are more than a dozen scattered throughout the city. Ruifeng Night Market offers various delights, from clothing to a variety of snacks and small dishes from hundreds of available stalls.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The official currency of Taiwan is the New Taiwan dollar, or NTD. ATMs are commonly used for currency exchange and easily found throughout the city. Tipping taxi drivers isn’t usually anticipated in Taiwan. Restaurants will just add a service fee if they expect a tip, so you don’t have to provide any additional tip.
