Halloween celebrations in big cities can absolutely be a blast—there's no denying that. But, in our humble opinion, the best Halloween towns in America are small towns. With historic homes, ghost stories, and tall tales passed down from generation to generation, no one sets the mood quite like 'em. There's also something incredibly special—and dare we say a little spooky—about spending the night of October 31st far away from the bright lights and crowded streets of more populous locales, and that's precisely why we've rounded up the best small towns to celebrate in right here.

And parents, you'll want to pay special attention: Our list includes dozens of family-friendly Halloween activities. In fact, if you've got your little ones dressed up in their Halloween costumes for kids and don't want to risk scaring them in the slightest, nearly all of these places are safe bets. Halloween bake-offs, tractor shows, and other fall-inspired games and shows are just a few of the less scary options that await you. So go forth and find your perfect small town destination for this Halloween!

But if you're going to Orlando with kids, the full-force terror at Universal may not be the most family-friendly. Instead, head over to Walt Disney World Resort for Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party ! Running from mid-August to early November, kids can enjoy the holiday without being overwhelmed by the more terrifying parts of Halloween. Fun for kids includes trick-or-treating, Disney character meet-and-greets, stage performances, and fireworks.

Today, you can learn about the real story of the Witch Trials and the legacy of real witches in Salem in places like the Salem Witch Museum .

2. Journey to Halloweentown in St. Helens, Oregon

Towns to Visit for Halloween Season: St. Helens, Oregon

Looking for the best Halloween towns in the US? How about the actual Halloweentown? If you’ve always wanted to pretend to be a Cromwell, you’ll light up with joy when you see that iconic jack-o’-lantern in front of City Hall, just like you remember from the beloved Disney classic “Halloweentown.”

St. Helens is so proud of being the home of Halloweentown that it throws an annual festival called the Spirit of Halloweentown , running from mid-September all the way to Halloween. But if you want to see the giant pumpkin illuminated, you’ll have to arrive on October 1, when the jack-o’-lantern is lit right after the Big Halloween Parade.

The celebration mainly takes place over the weekends throughout September and October, with special events happening every Saturday and Sunday. Check out haunted attractions, meet creepy and magical characters, and take specialty tours with a Halloween theme.

But “Halloweentown” isn’t the only movie that has filming locations in town. “Twilight” shot several scenes in St. Helens. Throughout the Spirit of Halloweentown events, you’ll be able to meet actors from both franchises. Be sure to secure your tickets early to be able to get a photo with these casts of characters.

3. Go to Orlando, Florida, for Frightful Fun

Best Halloween Towns to Visit: Universal Orlando

As the Theme Park Capital of the World, Orlando is one of the best places to spend Halloween in the US because there’s something for everyone. Two of Orlando’s biggest parties couldn’t be more opposite.

Step inside Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights and enter a world of nightmares around every corner. This Halloween festival is not for the faint of heart, and please leave young kids with a babysitter because no one is safe here.

Even if you decide not to enter one of the 10 exquisitely decorated haunted houses featuring franchises like “Chucky,” “The Last of Us,” and “Stranger Things,” you’ll still be subjected to multiple scare zones, where creatures will come out of the mist to scare you out of your wits.

Be on the lookout for the roaming hordes of characters, including the Death Eaters from “Harry Potter” and the terrifying M3GAN robots from 2023’s breakout horror hit of the same name (who have some pretty impressive dance moves). You never know where they’ll pop up.

Traveling with little ones or just not so into getting scared repeatedly throughout the night? Check out Walt Disney World’s aptly named Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party . Running from mid-August to November 1, this party’s most frightening feature is the Headless Horseman, who always starts the Boo-to-You Parade, taking place twice per night. But you can always close your eyes when he arrives.

The rest of the evening in Magic Kingdom will be spent going on Halloween-themed rides, watching fireworks with projections on Cinderella Castle, seeing a musical extravaganza starring the Sanderson Sisters from “Hocus Pocus,” and dining on ghoulishly good specialty treats. And everyone is invited to go trick-or-treating throughout the park.

4. Look Out for the Headless Horseman in Sleepy Hollow, New York

Best Cities for Halloween in the US: Sleepy Hollow

Sleepy Hollow is appropriately named as it’s a sleepy little village in New York’s Hudson Valley. It’s particularly beautiful in the fall when the leaves change color and make it look like something out of a painting – or perhaps out of a story.

This scenic spot is one of the best Halloween towns, as it’s the setting for “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving. And many events in and around Sleepy Hollow embrace their spooky status.

Best Towns for Halloween in the US: Sleepy Hollow

Over in Croton-on-Hudson, you can see over 7,000 hand-carved pumpkins against the backdrop of Van Cortlandt’s 18th-century estate at the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze . 6. Celebrate Neewollah in Independence, Kansas

Independence takes Halloween very seriously. After all, their Halloween celebration, Neewollah , is Kansas’s biggest annual festival. Neewollah, Halloween spelled backward, began back in 1919 and was inspired by a desire to take the trick out of trick-or-treating. The festival was designed to give kids something more positive to do than run amuck on Halloween.

Taking place the last week of October, Neewollah is the perfect place for some family fun this Halloween. So, what is there to do? Quite a bit, though you won’t find a ghost or ghoul in the place unless they’re of the friendly variety.

Instead, you’ll find family-friendly musicals, fun runs, the Queen Neelah Pageant, a carnival, local food vendors, parades, craft shows, live music, a marching band competition, and the annual Medallion Hunt, where the whole town comes out to search for the famous Medallion. Neewollah is much more of a state fair than many other Halloween festivals, but this fair takes on a fall theming, with some Halloween magic mixed in.

7. Take Part in Family-Friendly Frights in Anoka, Minnesota

For more fun for the whole family, Anoka is one of the best Halloween towns. In fact, since 1937, this charming destination has been called the Halloween Capital of the World. And this small town does indeed hold one massive Halloween celebration , lasting throughout the month of October.

If you want a fright, you can check out the Anoka Haunted House, which has been a staple of the festivities for 35 years. But many of the events here are perfect for those of us who would prefer a tamer Halloween experience.

Kids will love the Kids Fall Festival in early October, and later in the month, they can take part in the Children’s Costume Contest and Children’s Pumpkin Carving Contest. But there’s plenty more fun to be had for the whole family, including multiple parades, the Anoka Halloween Ambassador Coronation, the Pumpkin Weigh-Off, and the annual Pumpkin Bowl, which sees the Anoka Tornadoes take on the Centennial Cougars.

8. Party Hop the Night Away in Los Angeles, California

Best Towns for Halloween in the US: Los Angeles, California

Los Angeles is one of the best cities for Halloween if you want to party all night long. From nightclubs rocking out to Halloween hits to epic immersive experiences, there’s something for every type of partygoer.

People come out decked in incredible costumes, so you may just end up spending the whole night people-watching.

Best Cities for Halloween in the US: Los Angeles, California

But you can also listen to live music and boogie down to DJs spinning the evening away. Or check out the bars along the street to indulge in some Halloween-themed drink specials.

Halloween isn’t the only holiday happening this time of year. Although Dίa del Los Muertos can sometimes get misconstrued as another version of Halloween, it is its own unique and very culturally significant celebration. Over at the famous Hollywood Forever Cemetery, you’ll find a huge event dedicated to Dίa del Los Muertos .

By day, you can take part in Dίa de Los Muertos, featuring a children’s plaza, stunning altars, art showcases, traditional dance performances, and unique cultural performances. But if you grab a ticket to Noche de los Muertos, you’ll see such incredible attractions and entertainment illuminated by candlelight and taking on a more adult-themed atmosphere.

9. Get Scared on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California

Best Halloween Towns to Visit: Queen Mary

Visiting the Queen Mary is not for those who frighten easily. Dating back to 1934, the Queen Mary was a luxury cruise liner that also ferried soldiers between the fronts in World War II. In 1967, it was retired and found a permanent home as a hotel in Long Beach.

It’s now known as one of the most haunted destinations in the US, with only the bravest being willing to stay in its famous Stateroom B340. If you want a ghostly encounter, you just might find it aboard this floating hotel.

Though Queen Mary’s beloved Dark Harbor, a truly incredible haunted house experience, has sadly not returned since the COVID-19 pandemic, you can still get scared at the Queen Mary during the Halloween season. The Queen Mary hosts its Haunted Encounters ghost tours, featuring many of the most infamously haunted locations in the hotel.

While we miss Dark Harbor, apparently Shaq (yes, that Shaq) heard the call of horror fans everywhere and brought a new horror festival to the Queen Mary, Shaqtoberfest . Not nearly as scary as its predecessor, Shaqtoberfest still offers tons of spooky fun, from haunted houses to pumpkin patches to a Halloween carnival.

10. Live Out Your ‘Twilight’ Dreams in Forks, Washington

Best Towns to Visit for Halloween: Forks, Washington

Team Edward? Or Team Jacob? No matter what side you choose, you’ll feel right at home in Forks, the town immortalized in Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” saga. So, if you prefer your vampires to be of the more sparkly variety, Forks is a great Halloween town to visit.

You can take your own “Twilight” tour, with stops at Bella Italia, where Edward and Bella had their first date; the Treaty Line, where no vampire or werewolf is allowed to cross into each other’s territory; and the Forks Community Hospital, where you’ll even see a spot reserved for Dr. Carlisle Cullen. And be sure to visit the Forever Twilight in Forks Collection at the Rainforest Arts Center, where you’ll see authentic “Twilight” props like screen-worn costumes.

Towns to Visit for Halloween Season: Forks, Washington

But if you want to get the full “Twilight” experience, you may want to actually go a bit earlier in the fall. Running every September near Bella’s birthday, September 13, the Forever Twilight in Forks Festival offers four days of fun, from panels with actors from the saga to costumed cosplayers acting out your favorite scenes to tons of themed parties and events.

11. Get Spooked in Savannah, Georgia

Best Towns for Halloween in the US: Savannah, Georgia

Think Salem is the most haunted town in the US? Or maybe New Orleans? You’re not wrong that there are tons of paranormal reports in these cities, but the title of the most haunted city in the US actually goes to Savannah. From the spooky yet gorgeous Bonaventure Cemetery to the Civil War-era Fort Pulaski, sightings of the unexplainable happen everywhere.

Though ghost tours are one of the coolest things to do in Savannah all year round, this spooky city really comes alive for the Halloween season. Deal with spirits of all kinds on the A Nightmare on Congress Street Bar Crawl , or get scared at the Savannah Moose Lodge’s Haunted Forest or the Alee Terror Plantation Haunted House .

Best Halloween Towns to Visit: Savannah, Georgia

But not everything is truly terrifying here. Savannah also hosts Wag-O-Ween , a pet-friendly event that raises money for local animal rescues and other critical animal-related causes. You’ll get treats for both you and your furry pal!

12. Take a Stephen King Tour in Bangor, Maine

Best Towns to Visit for Halloween: Bangor, Maine

What better way to celebrate Halloween in the US than by visiting one of the country’s best horror writers? Bangor has become a Halloween town thanks to being not only the home of Stephen King but also where he was greatly inspired to write some of his more famous stories. Bangor is the inspiration for Derry, the town in “It,” but there are many more places in the town that have jumped onto King’s pages.

Mount Hope Cemetery is the infamous burial ground in “Pet Sematary,” while the Paul Bunyan Statue features in both “It” and “Insomnia.” And from the water tower to the sewer drain, there are “It” locations all throughout the town. You can even see King’s own house on West Broadway.

You can tour Derry, we mean Bangor, on your own, or you can take a tour with SK Tours of Maine . This 2.5-hour tour is a narrated adventure through the town, where you’ll see not only what inspired King’s works but also historic landmarks from his own life, like where he worked and the charities he supported in town.

13. Attend the World’s Largest Halloween Parade in New York, New York

Best Halloween Towns to Visit: Village Halloween Parade

Like Los Angeles, there are Halloween parties galore in New York City . But there’s none more famous or massive than the Village Halloween Parade . This parade, which takes place in NYC’s Greenwich Village, holds the title of the world’s largest Halloween parade.

This iconic celebration was first held in 1973 and got its start thanks to Greenwich Village puppeteer and mask maker Ralph Lee. Puppets still have a special place in this parade. You can even volunteer to animate one for the festivities.

Best Cities for Halloween in the US: Village Halloween Parade

There are over 50,000 costumed participants, and you can be part of them. Happening on Halloween, this parade invites anyone to join in, provided you’re in costume or operating one of the parade’s puppets.

Join up with the crowd and dance the night away as you make your way north on Sixth Avenue. You just might win the annual costume contest, which takes place at the afterparty being held at Webster Hall.

14. Enjoy Scenic Hikes and Classic Horror in Telluride, Colorado

Over Labor Day weekend, Telluride is home to the Telluride Film Festival , where you can watch movie premieres and engage in talks with both famous and up-and-coming directors, writers, and actors. But come spooky season, another film festival takes over this scenic mountain town.

The Telluride Horror Show put Telluride on the map as one of the best Halloween cities in the US. As the first and largest horror film festival in Colorado, the Telluride Horror Show is the place to be for scary movie lovers.

Taking place over the course of three days in October, this festival offers something for every horror fan, from dark comedies to terrifying science fiction to classic horror. You’ll see movies you can’t see anywhere else, plus engage in talks with your favorite horror stars.

While Telluride’s ski season doesn’t typically start until late November, the film festival lines up perfectly with the best time to see the city’s fall foliage. Spend your evenings in the theaters and your mornings enjoying the beautiful golds, reds, and yellows to be found throughout the San Juan Mountains.

15. Pop into the New Hampshire Pumpkin Festival in Laconia, New Hampshire.

Spooky Halloween Towns to Visit: Pumpkin Festival

The picturesque town of Laconia may not be what you first think of when you imagine a Halloween city in the US. It’s not bursting with events or haunted houses, and if Laconia is haunted, it’s not really known for it. But if you’re looking for family-friendly fun, Laconia is a great place to spend Halloween.

The New Hampshire Pumpkin Festival , typically held over the course of one weekend in October, has a strange history. Since 1991, it has been held in Keene, where the town managed to hold on to the title of the largest number of jack-o’-lanterns in one place for many years. But in 2014, riots by Keene State College students resulted in the event being unable to continue in Keene. Since 2015, it’s been held in Laconia instead.

Though the organizers of Keene’s pumpkin festival now hold a much smaller festival called the Keene Pumpkin Festival , Laconia is where you’ll find a festival that’s much more similar to the original one in Keene. In addition to thousands of pumpkins on display, you’ll also discover handmade goods from more than 100 local artisans, kids’ attractions and entertainment, contests, parades, live music, light shows, and other special events.

There you have it! The 15 best places to celebrate Halloween in the US. What are your favorite Halloween cities? Let us know in the comments!

best towns to visit during halloween

While a large portion of the world considers Halloween to be largely for children, Americans of all ages take the holiday very seriously.

Starting as early as September, cities begin hosting their favorite eerie events designed to celebrate all things spooky – and most everyone takes part.

Across the USA this haunted season, you can discover Halloween events that are equal parts charming and creepy. Here are some of our favorite places to celebrate all things ghostly, macabre and just plain fabulous.

The Annual Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze at Van Cortlandt Manor, Croton-on-Hudson, New York

Sleepy Hollow, New York

Penned by Washington Irving in 1820, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” has permeated popular Halloween culture for literally centuries. Lucky for us, the town at the center of the story is very real and comes alive for a month-long Halloween celebration.

Take a tour of the historic cemetery by lantern light to learn about Irving and other notable citizens, or head over to the historic Philipsburg Manor, which is converted into a terrifying haunt known as Horseman’s Hollow .

If pumpkins are your thing, don’t miss the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze , which features over 7000 carved gourds, the Museum of Pumpkin Art and even a pumpkin windmill.

Revelers during the Haunted Happenings Grand Parade, Salem, Massachusetts, USA

Salem, Massachusetts

As the epicenter of the grim witch trials of the late 1600s, Salem , Massachusetts , sits at the heart of the country’s most visceral Halloween lore. Its heritage played a starring role in the Halloween classic Hocus Pocus , and its fame has led people from all over to make the pilgrimage to this haunted spot year-round.

Visiting Salem during October, however, delivers a special type of energy, as the town embraces the year’s biggest opportunity to delve into its history. Take a candle-lit haunted tour of the city; visit the Witch Trials Memorial and the Salem Witch Museum ; dive into the world of the unknown at the Psychic Fair and Witchcraft Expo ; and top it all off by attending the annual Witches Ball , a masquerade held at the historic Hawthorne Hotel .

A large float with a huge Dracula figure at the front is illuminated by a strong of light bulbs. People dressed in elaborate costumes throw items off the float to people on the street.

New Orleans, Louisiana

It’s no secret that New Orleans can throw a party like nowhere else – a talent that’s not limited to Mardi Gras in February. Many regard the city as one of the most haunted in the country: ghost tours abound throughout the year, making Halloween a particularly important time here. Hit the French Quarter during October for a supernatural celebration called  Krewe of Boo! , which brings Mardi Gras–esque flair to the spooky season.

The parade features what New Orleans does best – with a ghoulish twist: think hand-crafted floats, costumed bands, dancers and even beads (locally sourced and make an effort to be environmentally friendly). The Krewe also hosts an annual Zombie Run , where zombies take to the streets like a scene out of World War Z .

Revellers march in costumes during the 49th Annual Halloween parade in Greenwich Village, New York, New York, USA

New York, New York

Head to any US city with an art-house movie theater in October and you’ll find a live-action showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show , complete with costumes, props, callbacks from the audience and a three-dimensional cast shadowing the on-screen antics.

This tradition began in  New York City at the now-defunct Waverly Theater – and continues today through the work of the  NYC Rocky Horror  troupe. Check their website to see where they’ll be doing the “Time Warp” next.

While you’re in town, don’t miss the famous Village Halloween Parade , famed for its creativity and sheer size. Watch (or join in!) as giant puppets make their way through the neighborhood, and costumed revelers jam to dozens of ambulatory bands playing music of all genres.

A green witch float in the Sea Witch Festival parade, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, USA

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

Not all witches dwell on land, it turns out. If your vibe skews nautical, don your seaweed and celebrate Halloween with your seafaring brethren at the Sea Witch Festival in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware . Festivities include Halloween staples like a parade and costume contest, but also ocean-inflected events like a haunted bonfire, coastal wildlife seminars, a trick-or-treat for kids on the beach, and a scavenger hunt for the sea witch herself.

Best Halloween Towns: Salem, Massachusetts

Best Halloween Towns - Salem MA Cemetery

If you are looking for more educational fun, head over to the Salem Witch Museum where you can learn about witchcraft, the Salem Witch Trials of 1692, and the “witch hunt” that is often still around today!

best towns to visit during halloween

Great Jack-o’-lantern Blaze

Every year they host the Great Jack-o’-lantern Blaze. Thousands of pumpkins are ablaze in the most beautiful scenes and displays. This event is perfect for kids and adults of all ages.

There is also Jay Ghoul’s House of Curiosities, Legend Behind the “Legend” and more.

Some other haunting events available in Sleepy Hollow during the fall are haunted hayrides and Irving’s “Legend” are just a few scary activities sure to please young teens and adults.

Best Halloween Towns: Buena Park, California

Known as the Halloween capital of SoCal and transforming into “Boo-uena Park”. This town does Halloween right. In Buena Park, you will find yourself surrounded by all things fall events.

The longest-running theme park Halloween party in the country! Knott’s Scary Farm [ages 13 and up] and Knott’s Spooky Farm [perfect for littles] have been running for 45 years and they each are now one of the largest Halloween events in SoCal.

You can also enjoy Rock & Brews Monster Beer Fest [who doesn’t love a good Halloween brew?] or the Silverado Days Festival, a family-friendly festival with activities like arm wrestling, live music, hog calling, eating contests, and more!

Best Halloween Towns: New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is the home of Mardi Gras and voodoo. No way was it not going to make this list. Halloween is the second most celebrated holiday here. [I bet you can guess the first.]

Best Halloween Towns - New Orleans

There are so many haunted tours to take through New Orleans I could not just pick one to showcase here. Every corner will have a haunted house or haunted street and you will be easily able to find one to fit your style!

New Orleans has a reputation for voodoo. You can visit the New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum and learn all about the history of Louisiana voodoo. Another very popular voodoo attraction is Marie Laveau’s House of Voodoo . New Orleans offers several voodoo tours, Congo Square and Bayou St. John are also worth a visit.

Best Halloween Towns: Anoka, Minnesota

Anoka, MN gives off small-town vibes and is one of the best towns to visit for Halloween. But it is the self-proclaimed “Halloween Capital” of the United States. Credited for hosting the first-ever Halloween event in history, year after year this town does not disappoint.

Instead of tossing their pumpkins into the garbage, the town brings all of their pumpkins to the pumpkin smash. They then throw the pumpkins into a huge compost bin where they are used for new soil and other great things for the town to use!

If you’re into Halloween but also very competitive, make the trip to Anoka. Every year they host a Gray Ghost 5k. The best part of this race is that most participants dress in costumes for the run!

Anoka hosts mostly family-friendly events which are perfect for people traveling with children. These events include coloring contests, A Halloween Ambassador contest, a preschool costume contest, and even a bingo night!

Best Halloween Towns: New York City, New York

NYC does not disappoint on the party front, whether it is Halloween or any other time of the year. But during Halloween, New York City really comes to life! In the fall and near Halloween, you will find countless Halloween parties and haunted attractions.

This parade is not your average parade. Started in 1973 by a mask maker named Ralph Lee. The Greenwich Village Halloween Parade has become the largest Halloween celebration and parade in the United States. It starts at dusk and continues throughout the night. You will be competing with an average of over 2 million people for the best costume!

Best Halloween Towns: Independence, Kansas

Another one of the great small towns in the United States, Halloween, is done right in Independence, Kansas! They don’t let the fun stop in just one night. They celebrate for 9 days!

One of the best small-town Halloween festivals is held annually in Independence, KS. The Neewollah Festival is the largest annual Halloween event in the entire state. If you didn’t notice, Neewollah is Halloween spelled backward. Over 75,000 people attend the festival annually. It is full of fun events for families and individuals. Dozens of activities are available from different parades, carnivals, food festivals, haunted houses and so much more!

Best Halloween Towns: Savannah, Georgia

Savannah is known as one of the most haunted cities in the United States. It is very similar to Salem. Savannah has been around for a long time and is also one of the oldest cities in Georgia.

best towns to visit during halloween

The Bonaventure Cemetery Tours in Savannah, GA bring the city’s history and scariness together. These cemetery tours run year-round but visiting a graveyard closer to Halloween is way more fun.

If you are 21 or over you are in for a very fun night! You’ll visit local bars and other creepy and haunted Savannah sites. The Creepy Crawl is a fun and boozy activity, and everyone gets a souvenir to-go cup koozie!

Best Halloween Towns: St. Helens’ Oregon

Heading back to Halloween movie territory, St Helens’ Oregon is the home of the Disney movie Halloweentown . Being one of the many famous cities for Halloween, they filmed many of the scenes right in St. Helens and they keep the Halloween spirit alive even years after all these years!

This is an annual event where the town gets together and lights the giant pumpkin in front of the town hall. [Like the pumpkin in front of the town hall in Halloweentown .]

This event lasts a little over a month and is full of festival activities. The Spirit of Halloweentown festival includes a scavenger hunt through the woods, tarot card readings, haunted houses, and a dance!

The last midwestern Halloween town on our list, and it does not disappoint. Some cities, towns, and neighborhoods have over-the-top Christmas displays every year, but not Romeo. This is one town that goes all out for Halloween.

Terror on Tillson Street- During the month of October, many [if not all] homeowners created some creepy and spooky [and seriously detailed] displays on their front lawn. Since the neighbors started this tradition, the town has been a Terror on Tillson Street ever since. You won’t have to pay admission to a haunted house when you can walk around the neighborhood and enjoy all the spookiness for free.

With so many famous cities for Halloween and small towns, which outdo their size during this spooky season. It may be hard to choose where to travel. But, wherever you decide, bring your best costume, and love for Halloween because you’re gonna need it

50 Spooktacular Towns Across America

A chill in the air marks the last gasps of summer as Halloween slides into America’s cultural spotlight. For some, spooky season is a precursor to the holiday season, a frightening introduction to the long nights that winter brings. But for others, Halloween is a reason to celebrate.

Halloween means costumes, candy and celebrations of storytelling. It means ghost stories told over the flicker of firelight tinged by the flavor of melting s’mores. And in big cities and small towns across the country, this supernatural holiday has carved its way into our hearts like the soft glow of a jack-o’-lantern grinning into the night.

From coast to coast and occasionally beyond, these are the best places to celebrate Halloween in each state.

13 Destinations to Spend Your Next Halloween

Sharing is caring!

Halloween. Allhalloween. All Hallows’ Eve. All Saints’ Eve. Samhain. However you classify it, it’s observed by many countries all over the world on the last day of October. Halloween is personally my favorite holiday and I love learning about the origins of my favorite holiday and finding the best Halloween towns to spend it in. It is widely believed that many of the traditions most of us love originated from ancient Celtic harvest festivals, more specifically Samhain. These pagan festivals were formed into Christian holidays much like Yule is to Christmas and Ostara to Easter.

Many Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, costume parties, carving pumpkins into jack-o lanterns, bonfires, visiting haunted attractions, watching scary movies, and much more.

Best Halloween Towns to Spend Halloween

New Orleans, Louisiana, USA

Talek of Travels with Talek

New Orleans and Halloween go together like cookies and cream! You would be hard-pressed to find a better place to spend Halloween than in New Orleans.  The whole city is into the scary holiday.  Residents decorate their lawns with spooky denizens of the dark, ghost tours do a brisk business and to visit one of the city’s famous cemeteries you actually have to die.

There are tons of Halloween related activities on offer in the Big Easy but here is my favorite, an escape the room Halloween adventure. You and a couple of other people are locked up in a morgue and given an hour to escape the room with tips provided by the guys who run the event. There is a “zombie” chained to the wall and as the hour ticks away, the chain gets longer and longer until, at the end, the zombie can reach you even in the farthest reaches of the room.  As the group tries frantically to unravel the clues that will lead to the escape, you shout secret strategies to each other almost unaware that the “zombie” is actually a perfectly healthy actor who is understanding all your strategies and, of course, pre-empting them.

Good fun but not for the faint-hearted.

Bell Witch Cave, Tennessee, USA

There’s a legend in Tennessee that the Bell family was haunted by the Bell Witch between the years of 1817 and 1820. This is such a popular legend that it’s actually taught in schools for the Tennessee history curriculum. The Bell Witch Cave is located on what was the Bell family’s land and they open to the public during the summer and the month of October for special Halloween events. You can tour the cave, the cabin, or both. People have reported having the feeling of being watched, hearing voices in the cave, and some have even reported having the feeling of being slapped or scratched. This is just one of the many haunted houses in Nashville.

Derry, Northern Ireland

Teresa of brogan abroad.

Most people think Halloween is an American tradition when in reality it has Irish origins. In the Emerald Ireland, Halloween is known as Samhain (pronounced sow-in), when according to Celtic tradition on the night of 31st October the boundaries between the world of the dead and the world in the living are blurred.

So it may surprise people that one of the best places to spend Halloween in Derry (also known as Londonderry) in Northern Ireland. It was voted the number one Halloween destination in the world by the USA Today in 2015, so I had to go and check it out for myself. And I discovered that Halloween in Derry is certainly a celebration that everyone must experience at least once in their lifetime.

The whole city is transformed into a stage of spooky and creepy acts where everyone joins in. The 17th-century city walls come alive with Awakening The Walls, a series of performances, storytelling, light shows and scary encounters that you will come across as you follow the walls. Ghostly drummer shows, Jack O’Lantern workshops and the spectacular Return of the Ancients parade are events that must not be missed.

Chicago, Illinois, USA

By valentina of  valentina’s destinations.

Chicago’s haunted history and extravagant parties make it the perfect Halloween destination. There are so many spooky stories that I don’t even know where to start! For one, Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood was built right on top of a cemetery! Lincoln Park was also the setting for the famous St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. The deadliest fire in U. S. history happened in Chicago’s Nederlander Theatre (because of this fire, doors now open facing out).

To learn more about these haunted events and many others, I highly recommend a tour. I loved Wateriders ghosts and gangsters kayaking tour! The Chicago History Museum also gives Haunted History tours at the Lincoln Park Zoo in October. Finally, make sure to check out Chicago’s Graceland Cemetery.

Chicago is such a fun place to party on Halloween. You can party at Navy Pier, on yachts or at many downtown hotels. Although, Godfrey’s Haunted Hotel keeps me coming back year after year.

They block off an entire floor of the hotel and turn it into a haunted house. Each room has a different theme, everyone dresses up and the drinks are killer. They also have professional photographers take free photos for guests! Needless to say, tickets sell out quickly each year.

best towns to visit during halloween

Tijuana, Mexico

By ed and jenn of coleman concierge.

In recent years, Day of the Dead (Dia las Muertos) had grown in popularity in America. It’s like three more days of Halloween, but everybody dresses up like skeletons, right? Not exactly. That’s like saying American cheese is, in fact, cheese. If you want a cheese holiday, go to France. If you’re going to experience Dia las Muertos, go to Mexico. There no closer (or more accessible) Mexican city than Tijuana, which makes it perfect.

As soon as you walk across the border, you will feel the festivity in the air. This isn’t a holiday of the macabre; it’s a chance to remember those who passed and maybe see them again. The all the markets (like the Hidalgo Market) are overflowing with ritualistic offerings to bring the dead to you. You’ll find marigolds because the spirits love the smell, candy skulls to feed them after their long journey, and of course, the skeletons everywhere so they feel welcome.

The living do their part to make the reunion. All of the cemeteries come alive with visitors partying and picnicking, hoping to see their beloveds one more time. When we visited Panteon #1, Tijuana’s oldest cemetery, we found mariachi bands, marigold vendors, and quite a few families out and about. It was midday, but according to a local, the party really ramps up in the evening. Go to Tijuana for Dia Las Muertos with a curious mind, and try to see what this holiday truly means for the locals who are celebrating it.

Giant Kite Festival, Day of the Dead in Guatemala

Michele of a taste for travel.

Unlike Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico where many of the rituals take place in cemeteries, in Guatemala the most spectacular Dia de Muertos festivities take place on the hilltops of the mountainous highlands outside Guatemala City, the capital. On November 1st of each year, Los Barriletes de Sumpango or Giant Kite Festival is one of the biggest celebrations for Day of the Dead in Guatemala.

The main thing to do after visiting the gravesite of one’s family ancestors is to head to Los Barriletes de Sumpango in Sumpango, a hillside town in the Guatemalan department of Sacatepéquez near Antigua where teams of kite-fliers of all ages — from children to adults — hoist enormous, colorful kites into the sky. The belief is that the kites carry messages to the spirits of departed ancestors.

It’s a festive atmosphere with hundreds of colorful kites, crowds of participants and onlookers dressed in traditional indigenous Maya clothing, food vendors, dancing and music. One of the top things to do during these Day of the Dead festivities is to enjoy typical holiday foods such as fiambre (enormous salads featuring meat, marinated vegetables, boiled eggs, and cheese), a special dish prepared just once a year.

best towns to visit during halloween

New York City, USA

James of travel collecting.

New York City and the surrounding area is one of the best places to experience Halloween. There are harrowing haunted houses that open for the season; spooky ghost tours; and, in Croton-on-Hudson just north of the city, the Great Jack o’Lantern Blaze in which thousands of carved pumpkins are arranged to create incredible displays. The piece de resistance, however, is the famous Halloween Parade in Greenwich Village. It may be difficult to Trick and Treat in NYC, but on Halloween, thousands of people line the streets of the village to witness about 50,000 people parade through the streets of New York in fanciful costumes.

The parade route is north along Sixth Avenue. It starts at Spring Street at 7:00 pm and typically goes until about 10:30 pm, ending at 16th Street. Grab a spot early to get great views. There are towering puppets along the way, but mostly it is packed with people in elaborate costumes ranging from drag queens, characters from horror movies – and current political events – to more traditional witches and goblins. Watching the parade is fun, but this is New York City – it’s even more fun to join in the parade yourself. It is free to join and there is no registration– just dress up in your spookiest, funniest or cleverest costume and line up at Canal Street between 6:30 pm and 8:30 pm. There is nothing quite like it!

best towns to visit during halloween

Rosie of  Flying Fluskey

Hong Kong is the spot where two worlds coincide. Whilst being firmly in Asia, and full of Chinese culture and traditions, Hong Kong has a few celebrations that are distinctly Western. For example, Hong Kong is a great place to celebrate Halloween. In fact, I’d go so far as to say it is the best place to celebrate Halloween in Asia.

Unlike in many other countries, Halloween in Hong Kong is best enjoyed as a teenager or young adult. There are numerous parties around town, but most involve drinking and partying into the wee hours. The biggest of these is in the infamous Lan Kwai Fong area, located in and around Midlevels and Central. The whole area is crammed with revelers in spectacular costumes, who meander from bar to bar, stopping for a few selfies and many drinks. The whole place is so packed that they have to operate a one-way system!

If rowdy bars aren’t your thing, or you are a little younger then head to one of Hong Kong’s theme parks to celebrate. There are two choices. For young children, Hong Kong Disney throws its annual “Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween”. This is the same worldwide, less scares and cuter, furry spiders. Alternatively, for older kids, teens (and maybe a few childless millennials) I would highly recommend a trip to Ocean Park. This is Hong Kong’s independent theme park and the whole place comes to life for Halloween. Huge stages are erected for cool dance shows, walk through attractions scare the living daylights out of you, and the scary characters roam the areas between the rides. Great fun for nearly, all the family!

best towns to visit during halloween

Louisville, Kentucky, USA

When most people think of Louisville, Kentucky, they think of two things: bourbon and horses. But did you know that Louisville is a perfect destination for Halloween ? With super scary and family-friendly Halloween attractions alike, there’s a Halloween attraction for everyone in Louisville!

If you’re a fan of all things spooky and scary, you must plan a visit to Waverly Hills Sanatorium. Many people believe that it’s one of the most haunted places on earth – plan a visit to find out for yourself! If you’re not convinced yet, make sure to check out the former tuberculosis hospital’s body chute, where dead bodies were transported so that patients wouldn’t see them. During the Halloween season, the hospital grounds are turned into a fun, traditional haunted house.

If you want to celebrate Halloween without the scares, make sure to check out the Louisville Jack O’ Lantern Spectacular, located in Iroquois Park. You’ll be amazed by the thousands of carved jack o’ lanterns that are displayed along a walking trail in the park. In 2019, the Jack O’ Lantern Spectacular will run from October 8 to November 3. Lines can get extremely long; for the shortest wait times, visit on a weekday!

best towns to visit during halloween

Oaxaca, Mexico

Sean of living out lau.

If you are looking to celebrate Day of the Dead or Dia de Los Muertos in Mexico, then there is no other place better than the city of Oaxaca. Oaxaca is easily accessible by plane or by a bus from Mexico City. What makes Day of the Dead so special in Mexico and Oaxaca is the amount of celebration and the signification it has. In Mexican culture, death is not something to mourn about. Death is part of the cycle of life. And on Day of the dead, it is a day of celebration because they believe that their dead loved one is celebrating with them in spirit. For that reason, Day of the Dead usually involves music, dancing, drinking, and much more. And of course, there is no better place to do all of that than the cemeteries themselves.

On Day of the Dead, families decorate the graves, paint their faces, and go to the cemetery to celebrate. The celebration is usually three days, from October 31st to November 2, with each day signifying something different. October 31st s the big party day where you will see parades, celebrations and face painting everywhere on the streets of Oaxaca. November 1st is a day for all the dead children and infants. November 2nd is to honor all the dead adults. In addition to the celebration, families will build altars at home in remembrance of the dead ones. The altars are made of pan de Muerto (“bread of the dead”), marigolds, skull chocolates, candles, and much more.

best towns to visit during halloween

Stonehenge, United Kingdom

Danielle of live in 10 countries.

Halloween means so many different things to different people. It might be the chance to get the kids dressed up for you and go to Disneyland, and that’s awesome.

But, for me, Halloween goes back to the ancient traditions as Samhain, history and the older beliefs of the British Isles. Samhain is associated with Gaelic culture and it’s a lot more in touch with the natural world.

The event is celebrated halfway between the two equinoxes while moving into the dark side of the year. So Stonehenge’s association with the solstice is a natural leap. Some druids visit over the period, and it’s not too commercialized.

Though it’s a famous monument, it’s easy to reach Stonehenge by road and the network around it won’t be closed off at Halloween. You can also catch fast train connections to Salisbury, but remember to bring supplies with you – the famous henge is a good way from the nearest village and only has a visitor center on-site, open office hours.

Also popular, and free from any fencing or regulations is nearby Amesbury Stone Circle. Though smaller, it’s arguably just as beautiful.

If you need somewhere to stay, there are camping and glamping options in the area and hotels in both Amesbury (nearer and smaller) and the county capital of Salisbury.

stonehenge

Salem, Massachusetts, USA

Jackie of enjoy travel life.

Salem, Massachusetts celebrates Halloween like no other. As a colonial New England town known for its nefarious tales of witchcraft, it is especially ghoulish during Halloween. This north-of-Boston waterfront destination is popular for its rich history, grand museums, fresh seafood, and plenty of shopping; but its year-round fascination with the occult is by far the biggest draw.

In October, there are numerous “Haunted Happenings” to encourage the Halloween spirit. From ghost tours, pumpkin strolls, parades, and family film nights to fireworks, the events suit various interests. There’s even a Witches Halloween Ball. A myriad of shops provides tarot card readings, divination, healing crystals, and herbal tinctures for those looking to the future. You’ll also be amazed by how many homeowners get into the fun with macabre Halloween decorations. Eek!

To get to Salem, take public transportation or the ferry from Boston, or park free at the Blaney Street Pier. Unless you have a broom, we found the easiest way to explore is by hopping on and off the Salem Trolly. (Plus they tell great stories!)

October in New England can be chilly, so dress in layers and wear comfortable shoes for walking cobblestone-and-brick streets.

If you’re embracing your inner witch (or warlock or werewolf) or just want to experience the magic of Halloween in Salem, plans early. You can expect big crowds in Salem during October, especially on weekends. Hotels fill up as much as a year in advance, and with Halloween 2020 falls on a full moon, Salem’s sure to be frightful!

Sleepy Hollow, New York, USA

Kurosh of road goat.

About one hour north of New York by train, you’ll find the small village of Sleepy Hollow .  Just reading the name of the town, you can probably already sense it’s a great place to get the Halloween spooks.  And it is!

For centuries, the town is said to have been haunted by the Headless Horseman – the protagonist in Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow movie.  The Headless Horseman commits a series of murders in the town.

Visit Sleepy Hollow during Halloween and explore its haunted mansions, such as Kykuit or Philips Manor .  Visit the Great Jack O’Latern Blaze .  Take a ride on a haunted hayride.  Walk through the street fair and watch some live music.  But watch out for the headless horseman who gallops through the town, looking for his next victim!

Other activities include taking a tour of the town cemetery or even taking a tour of the Haunted Hollow – the spooked trail where many of the Haunted Horseman’s crimes took place.  If that’s not enough, you can watch a theatrical reenactment of the Sleepy Hollow story.

Be sure to have a buddy close by with you at Sleepy Hollow, because it’s a scary place.

Hi! We were reaching out to let you in on the best kept secret in Kentucky…The small town of Cynthiana! With just over 6800 people, this town goes all out for fall.

Their businesses, homes and yards are decorated with over 500 poseable skeletons around town, doing regular mundane things like yard work. The town also has four 12 ft skeleton greeters. The worlds largest walking dead mural is located in Cynthiana, since the creators Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore are both originally from Cynthiana and Roberts wife owns a bed and breakfast there. Spooky music flows through a downtown speaker system in the months of September and October, while the perfect photo ops exists around every corner from the hanging pumpkin alley to the giant CYN decorated letters. The town has a gorgeous river than runs through it that makes this hidden gem one small town escape for your soul in the fall. Rohs Opera House, the oldest theater in Kentucky and one of the most haunted places in Kentucky, has sold out ghost walk tours each October alongside a fall event each weekend in the small town (witches night out is a big event!)

We do hope that you visit Cynthiana this fall and add it to your list!

Halloween is almost here and if you're looking to have some festive fun, these towns are sure to do the trick. From New Orleans to Salem, we’ve created this guide with some of the most haunted places in the United States. A few of the places listed are ghost towns, which are towns that have been abandoned as a result of natural disasters, disease, war, or urban growth. Most American ghost towns were mining camps in the Old West. Ghost tours often take place in these locations and are designed to scare people by telling them stories about ghosts who used to live there. If you’re eager to get in the Halloween spirit and want to make a trip somewhere to enjoy the season, you’ve come to the right place!

Best Halloween Destinations

Salem, Massachusetts

If you're looking for a town that's both home to one of the most famous witch trials in history and a slew of haunted houses, look no further than Salem, Massachusetts. Salem is known as "The Witch City" thanks to its role in the 1692 Salem witch trials, when 19 people were executed for witchcraft by order of local magistrate John Hathorne.

Salem is still haunted by its past today: there are several tours available through local businesses that allow you to walk around town and learn more about its history — and if those aren't spooky enough thrills for you, there are plenty of haunted houses too! The Witch House Museum itself is worth checking out; it's located on the site where some of those accused witches lived prior to their deaths at Gallows Hill. You can also visit nearby attractions like the Witch Dungeon Museum or take part in other Halloween events like parades or costume contests.

Anoka, Minnesota

The town of Anoka, Minnesota, is known as the "Halloween Capital of the World." The Chamber of Commerce came together with local high school students to create a haunted house that was so popular they decided to expand it into an annual festival! It’s believed that this was the first city in the country to hold Halloween festivities in order to deter kids from pulling pranks.

In addition to the spooky festival, Anoka is also home to some very historical landmarks. There’s an original log cabin from 1848 and a meadow that was once part of a large farm owned by Henry Hastings Sibley which helped settle Minnesota after the Civil War.

Sleepy Hollow, New York

Sleepy Hollow is a village in Westchester County, New York. It's known for its historic sites and beautiful location on the Hudson River. The Sleepy Hollow Cemetery holds the burial site of Washington Irving, who wrote the infamous short story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

If you're looking for a spooky place to spend Halloween night, Sleepy Hollow has plenty of options. You can visit this cemetery during the day or night, just be sure not to disturb any ghosts or other spirits! You can also go ghost hunting in one of their haunted houses or museums during Halloween season. Another bonus of visiting Sleepy Hollow around Halloween is that the region’s foliage lights up in gorgeous warm tones that will undoubtedly put you in the fall spirit!

Tombstone, Arizona

Not only is Tombstone one of the best places to go for Halloween in the United States (if not the world), but it's also where you can find some truly spooky stories — and that's no exaggeration. You might not even believe how many haunted tales are associated with this historic town!

Tombstone was established in 1877 after silver was discovered nearby, which brought miners and settlers into an area previously inhabited by Native Americans. The community grew rapidly as more people came looking for their fortune. By 1879, when Arizona became a state and Tombstone was named its first county seat, it had become a thriving mining town. However, this prosperity would be short-lived due to several factors such as drought conditions and an economic depression during the 1880s; by 1890 all major mining had ceased in Tombstone because there wasn't enough water left underground for operations anymore. Despite these setbacks, people continued living here until well into modern times—and who knows how many spirits still haunt these streets today?

It’s not a visit to Tombstone during Halloween without experiencing a ghost tour that brings you through the Boot Hill Cemetery as well as a visit to the O.K. Corral, which is where the most famous Wild West shootout that’s commonly portrayed in TV and movies happened to occur.

St. Helens, Oregon

St. Helens is one of the most iconic places you can visit during the season of Halloween. The family-friendly movie known as Halloweentown was filmed in St. Helens, and every year the town celebrates with its Spirit of Halloweentown festivities from mid-September all the way until October 31 st . You can’t miss out on a visit to the courthouse plaza to see the big pumpkin!

If you're looking for more frightful fun during your stay at this spooky little town, you'll find plenty of haunted houses and haunted hayrides to choose from. Some local restaurants even offer special menus for Halloween season! You’re in for a world of fun and spooks when you visit St. Helens during Halloween, and it’s definitely one of the better destinations if you’re traveling with kids!

New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is a city with a rich history and culture. It’s also home to some of the best food and music in America, making it ideal for a weekend trip during the Halloween season. New Orleans is known for its numerous haunted locations, including the world-famous St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 and Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop Bar & Refuge. The Bourbon Street area has plenty of options for dining out on Halloween night before embarking on one of the many ghost tours offered in the area. There are also bar crawls, parades, and costume contests throughout the city for all to enjoy!

Where to See the Solar Eclipse: The 15 Best Cities to Watch the Event

By Katherine McLaughlin

totality during a total solar eclipse

If you’re a fan of astronomy or otherwise interested in unique natural phenomenons, you may be wondering where to see the solar eclipse today—or if the big event will be visible from your home. Today, a number of cities throughout Mexico , the United States, and Canada will experience brief moments of dawn- or dusk-like darkness right in the middle of the day. Officially described as a total solar eclipse, the occurrence happens when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth and blocks the entirety of sun’s face.

Because it’s not something that happens everyday, the marvel has been prompting locals and travelers alike to scope out the best viewing locations, but fear not if you don’t have your spot figured out yet. Todays’s eclipse will travel along a wide, densely populated path. NASA estimated that 31.6 million people live in an area that will see the total solar eclipse and another 150 million are within 200 miles of it. What’s more, there won’t be another total solar eclipse visible from the contiguous United States until 2044, according to NASA , making it all the more important to catch this one.

For most of the United States, the eclipse won’t happen until the afternoon, meaning there’s still time to figure out how you’ll watch it. Here, AD covers everything you need to know about the upcoming event, including the 13 best cities to see the eclipse.

What is a total solar eclipse?

There are a number of different types of eclipses, which offer different views of either the sun or moon. As NASA explains it, “A solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and Earth, casting a shadow on Earth that either fully or partially blocks the sun’s light in some areas.” A total solar eclipse means the moon will completely block the sun’s face, and if you’re in the path of the eclipse, you’ll be able to see the sun’s corona and outer atmosphere, weather permitting. Other types of eclipses, like a partial solar eclipse, occur when the moon covers only some of the sun, resulting in a crescent shape.

A total solar eclipse is seen on a partly cloudy day.

How do you safely watch the total solar eclipse?

Not only are solar eclipses special because of their relative rarity, they’re unique in how they’re watched. For the few minutes when the moon is fully blocking the sun—know as totality—viewers can look directly at the sun without any eye protection. Any other time, including the hours before and after totality when you’ll see a partial eclipse, it’s important to wear protective eye gear, such as solar eclipse glasses. “As soon as you see even a little bit of the bright sun reappear after totality, immediately put your eclipse glasses back on or use a handheld solar viewer to look at the sun,” NASA explains.

How often do solar eclipses happen?

Solar eclipses, of one kind or another, happen between two and five times a year. Total eclipses happen about once every 18 months. However, this doesn’t mean one will be visible from your home this often. According to the Natural History Museum, London , a total solar eclipse is viewable from any one place about once every 400 years. For example, the last total solar eclipse visible from the United States happened in 2017 and followed a track from Oregon towards South Carolina. This year, the solar eclipse’s path will start in Texas and move northeast towards Maine. The next total solar eclipse will happen in 2026 and will be visible from the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, and northern Spain.

How long will the 2024 solar eclipse last?

Total solar eclipses can last anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes. The difference in totality length has to do with how far apart the sun, moon, and Earth are at any given time, since the latter two bodies both orbit in elliptical paths.

When the Earth is furthest from the sun—making the star appear smaller—and the moon is closest to the Earth—which makes the moon look big—totality can last for over seven minutes. As Astronomy Mag reports, these circumstances will line up in about 160 years, when a solar eclipse on July 16, 2186, will see almost seven-and-a-half minutes of totality. On the other extreme, if the Earth is at its closest point to the sun and the moon is at its furthest point from Earth, humans won’t see a total solar eclipse, even if all of the celestial bodies are in line. Since totality is all about the perspective of the viewer, this is also why each city will experience the 2024 eclipse differently.

This year, totality will last for a little over four minutes in some areas, which is significantly more than the two minutes that people experienced during the 2017 eclipse. As NASA notes, “During the 2017 total solar eclipse, the moon was a little bit farther away from Earth than it will be during the upcoming total solar eclipse, causing the path of that eclipse to be a little skinnier.” Seven years ago, the path of totality—which shows which parts of the world will be able to see the total solar eclipse—was only about 62 to 71 miles wide. This year, that path ranges from 108 to 122 miles wide. “Meaning at any given moment this eclipse covers more ground,” NASA explains.

How to read maps showing the 2024 solar eclipse

As noted, this year’s path of totality is about 110 miles wide. Cities closer to the center of the path will sustain total darkness longer than those on the edges. In addition to longer totality than in 2017, this year’s path of totality covers more densely populated areas than the previous one. This means more people should be able to experience the total solar eclipse.

Map of the united states showing the path of the total solar eclipse

The 2024 solar eclipse map from NASA shows where totality will occur on April 8.

Any part of the country that is not within the path may see a partial eclipse, and the closer a location is to the strip, the smaller the crescent of visible sun will be. In these locations, it won’t be safe to look directly at the eclipse without protective glasses or a viewing device. NASA has put together an interactive map , which allows viewers to see the eclipse timing in their city.

Where to see the solar eclipse

According to NASA , cities in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will experience the total solar eclipse. Parts of Mexico and Canada will also fall within the eclipse’s path. Read on for the best places to see the 2024 total solar eclipse.

Mexico’s pacific coast will be the first place in continental North America to experience the eclipse. Mazatlán, a popular resort city, is an ideal location to see the occurrence, as it is directly in the eclipse’s path. Totality will begin around 11:07 a.m. local time and last for 4 minutes and 17 seconds. Because it’s such an optimal place to see the 2024 solar eclipse, NASA is hosting a viewing event at Vidanta Mazatlán . Here, visitors will be able to watch screens showing telescope views of the eclipse in addition to other hands-on activities, such as projects for kids and touchable moon rocks.

Torreon Mexico

Torreón, Mexico

Located more centrally in the country, the solar eclipse will also be visible from Torreón. Totality will start just before 12:19 p.m. local time and last for 4 minutes and 12 seconds. A partial eclipse will also be visible before and after totality, starting at 11:44 a.m. and ending at 1:54 p.m.

Hills and plants in Texas Hill Country

Texas Hill Country

Part of Texas Hill Country, Kerrville is a prime location to watch the 2024 eclipse. Near the Mexican border, it will be among the first US cities to experience totality, which will begin at 1:32 p.m. and last for almost four and a half minutes. Austin and Dallas are also in the path of totality, but will only experience the darkness for about two minutes and a little under four minutes, respectively. NASA is also hosting an event here, which will take place in Louise Hays Park and include live music, speakers, and programming for kids.

Dallas Texas

Dallas, Texas

The Dallas-Fort Worth area is among the most densely populated places from which the eclipse will be visible. Totality will last for 3 minutes and 51 seconds and begin at 1:40 p.m. The city has put together a list of ideal places within the city to watch the event, including the Dallas Zoo, Dallas Museum of Art, and White Rock Lake Park.

Park in Arkansas

Russellville, Arkansas

Russellville, about 85 miles east of Little Rock, will experience 4 minutes and 12 seconds of totality, starting at 1:50 p.m. The city has planned a number of exciting programming for the historic event, including a solar eclipse festival and a concert with Grammy-winner Rhonda Vincent.

Street in Cape Girardeau Missouri

Cape Girardeau, Missouri

Located along the Mississippi River, Cape Girardeau is one of the best places in Missouri to watch the 2024 solar eclipse. According to NASA’s map, totality will last for a little over four minutes, beginning at 1:58 p.m. Head to Old Town Cape, where the city is hosting a block party on the day.

Carbondale Illinois

Carbondale, Illinois

Informally known as Little Egypt—possibly because the area delivered grains to northern parts of the state during the 1800s famine or because the southern tip of Illinois is similar to the Nile delta region in Egypt—Carbondale will experience 4 minutes and 10 seconds of totality, beginning at 1:59 p.m. The city also experienced totality during the 2017 eclipse, though it will see a longer dark period this time around. Home of Southern Illinois University, the school is hosting public viewing at its football stadium.

Indiana University

Bloomington, Indiana

Much of central and southern Indiana will experience totality during the 2024 solar eclipse, but Bloomington, largely a college town and home to Indiana University, will be among the best places in the Hoosier state to watch the event, since totality will last for about four minutes. The town is home to Indiana University, which is among our list of the most beautiful college campuses in America. Spend the afternoon strolling through the campus’s Gothic- and Romanesque-inspired buildings, and then catch the eclipse at 3 p.m.

Downtown Indianapolis

Indianapolis, Indiana

They don’t call Indianapolis the crossroads of America for no reason: The state capital is at the intersection of four major US highways, Interstate 65, Interstate 69, Interstate 70, and Interstate 74. This means it’s a relatively accessible location for those in surrounding areas and among the best places to travel to for the solar eclipse. Here, totality will last for about 3 minutes and 47 seconds and start at 3:06 p.m. NASA is hosting an event at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and will have experts on-hand to answer all questions about the eclipse. The city has also suggested White River State Park as an ideal solar eclipse viewing location, where a number of food trucks, local vendors, and other activations will be set up.

Cleveland Ohio

Cleveland, Ohio

Cleveland won’t be in a solar eclipse’s path of totality again until 2444 , making it a once in a lifetime experience for any locals hoping to watch the eclipse from their hometown. The city will experience maximum darkness at 3:15 p.m., which will last for just under 4 minutes. To commemorate the moment, the Great Lake Science Center is hosting a Total Eclipse Fest on April 6 through April 8. The free outdoor event will include speakers, concerts, performances, and hands-on science activities.

Erie Pennsylvania

Erie, Pennsylvania

Only a small portion of northern Pennsylvania will be within the path of totality. Erie, located along the shores of the lake of the same name, will be one of the best places in the state to see the eclipse. Totality will last for 3 minutes and 42 seconds, starting at 3:16 p.m. The local government has put together a map of public parks and other viewing locations to watch the spectacle.

downtown Buffalo New York

Buffalo, New York

Buffalo, New York, will see 3 minutes and 46 seconds of total darkness, beginning at 3:18 p.m. There are a number of public “ watch parties ” happening in the city, which the government has compiled for visitors and locals. Midcentury-modern architecture fans may want to use the day to visit Graycliff, a Frank Lloyd Wright–designed estate, which is hosting a special open house on April 8, allowing guests to watch the eclipse from the property.

Niagara Falls

Niagara Region, Ontario

Small parts of Canada will also witness total darkness during the 2024 eclipse. The Niagara region is the best place to see totality, which will start at 3:19 p.m. and last for 3 minutes and 15 seconds. Montreal will also experience totality, but only for a little over one minute.

Downtown street in Burlington Vermont

Burlington, Vermont

Much of New England will miss out on totality during the 2024 eclipse, as the path will only cover parts of northern Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Burlington is among the best places for those in the region to travel to, as it will experience 3 minutes and 19 seconds of darkness, starting at 3:26 p.m.

Houlton Maine

Houlton, Maine

Maine is the northern most place in the United States to see the total eclipse in 2024, also making it the last place in the country to experience totality. Houlton will be among the best places in the state to watch the sight, and darkness will begin at 3:32 p.m. and last for 3 minutes and 20 seconds.

How will weather impact visibility?

Geographically, the cities listed above represent the best places to see the 2024 solar. However, weather will play a major role in just how well those on the ground will be able to see the phenomenon. It goes without saying that cloudy conditions or rain will impact visibility and make it harder to see the eclipse. Currently, meteorologist are forecasting worse conditions in the south-central United States, which could affect those in Texas and Arkansas. Those in the Midwest and northeast have better odds, where conditions are presently forecasted to be sunny and with clear skies.

What will I see during the solar eclipse if my city isn’t along the path of totality?

Though not every city will see a total solar eclipse, most of the United States will see at least a partial eclipse. For example, as NASA’s map shows, Seattle, which is one of the furthest metropolises from the eclipse’s path will still see about 20% of the sun covered by the moon. Here, peak coverage will happen around 11:29 a.m. On the south side of the country, Miami, which is also quite far from the eclipse’s path, will see 46.2% of the sun covered around 3:01 p.m.

On the other hand, cities which are not along the path of totality but are very close will see a greater percentage of the sun covered. St. Louis, for example, which is just outside the path of totality, will see the moon covering 99.1% of the sun during peak totality, which will happen at 2 p.m. For detailed information about your city, see NASA’s interactive eclipse map .

Can I watch the 2024 solar eclipse virtually?

If you won’t be within the path of totality, a number of organizations are live streaming the monumental event (This may also come in handy if a city experiences cloudy weather or rain on eclipse day). To start, NASA is offering live broadcasts in both English and Spanish and live streams from telescopes that will capture the eclipse as it moves across the country. Scientific American will capture the event with jets that have been converted into flying telescopes to chase the eclipse, offering a view that one simply can’t find on the ground.

ABC News and National Geographic are also teaming up to produce “Eclipse Across America,” a live special hosted by David Muir and Linsey Davis. Coverage starts at 2:00 p.m. ET on ABC, ABC News Live, National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo WILD, Disney+, Hulu and Network Social Media Platforms and will broadcast from 10 cities along the path of totality, including Mazatlán, Mexico; Russelville, Arkansas; and Houlton, Maine.

2024 solar eclipse map: Where to see the eclipse on April 8

These 2024 solar eclipse maps will help you make the best decision about where and how to watch the total solar eclipse on Monday (April 8).

map of north america showing the path of the april 8 solar eclipse

It's finally here: Today, (April 8) a total solar eclipse will pass across the skies North America, giving more than 33 million people living in 15 U.S. states a rare view of the totally-obstructed sun, and — weather permitting — a taste of some seriously strange eclipse phenomena .

If you’re wondering where the total and partial phases of the eclipse will be visible, the good news is that almost everyone in the contiguous U.S. will be able to see the celestial spectacle to some extent. But for a more detailed view of the eclipse’s path, take a look at these handy eclipse maps, courtesy of GreatAmericanEclipse.com.

Totality is the moment that every eclipse-chaser lives for: The moment when the moon completely covers the sun’s face, resulting in a brief but eerie darkness in the daytime. The path of totality , shown in the map above, is the path of the moon’s shadow across Earth’s surface.

On Monday (April 8), totality will begin in Sinaloa, Mexico, then move northeast up to Texas, ultimately crossing 15 states before moving on to Canada. The states where totality will be visible are: Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine — although Tennessee and Michigan will only be glanced by the moon's shadow.

Related: April 8 solar eclipse: What time does totality start in every state?

Viewers MUST be within the path of totality to witness the total phase of the eclipse; if you are off the path by even a mile, you will only see a partial eclipse, and miss out on the spooky daytime darkness. Furthermore, the closer you are to the center of the path of totality, the longer totality will last for you — up to a maximum duration of 4 minutes, 27 seconds in Torreón, Mexico.

Note: Totality is the ONLY TIME when it is safe to view the sun without protective eyewear like certified solar eclipse glasses . You must protect your eyes during the entire partial phase of the eclipse, no matter where you are.

Solar eclipse 2024 partial eclipse map

A map of total and partial eclipse coverage across North America on April 8, 2024.

If you live in the U.S. and can’t make it to the path of totality, a partial eclipse still awaits you on April 8. The entire contiguous U.S. will have some view of the partial eclipse, ranging from 99% coverage of the sun just off the path of totality to about 15% coverage far to the northwest of the path.

The map above shows how much of the sun’s disk will be blocked from your location. Watching the partial phases of the eclipse — which last about an hour and 20 minutes before and after totality — means wearing protective eyewear at all times. Failure to do so could result in permanent eye damage, according to NASA .

If you want to experience the celestial spectacle but don’t have a pair of eclipse glasses handy, there are many other ways to safely enjoy the partial eclipse . These include making a homemade pinhole projector , using a pasta strainer to project the shadow of the moon onto the ground or watching one of the various eclipse live streams available.

What time the 2024 solar eclipse started, reached peak totality and ended

By Sarah Maddox

Updated on: April 9, 2024 / 5:04 AM EDT / CBS News

The 2024 solar eclipse will be visible across North America today. As the moon's position between the Earth and sun casts a shadow on North America, that shadow, or umbra, will travel along the surface from west to east at more than 1,500 miles per hour along the path of totality .

That means the eclipse will start, peak and end at different times — as will the moments of total darkness along the path of totality — and the best time to view the eclipse depends on where you are located. Some places along the path will have more totality time than others.

In Texas, the south-central region had clouds in the forecast , but it was better to the northeast, according to the National Weather Service. The best eclipse viewing weather was expected in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, as well as in Canada's New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

What time does the 2024 total solar eclipse start?

Eclipse map of totality

The total solar eclipse will emerge over the South Pacific Ocean before the shadow falls across North America, beginning in parts of Mexico. The path of totality , where onlookers can witness the moon fully blocking the sun (through eclipse viewing glasses for safety ), is expected to first make landfall near the city of Mazatlán around 9:51 a.m. MT.

The total solar eclipse will cross over the U.S.-Mexico border into Texas, where it will emerge over Eagle Pass at 12:10 p.m. CT and then peak at about 1:27 p.m. CT.

In Dallas, NASA data shows the partial eclipse will first become visible at 12:23 p.m. CT and peak at 1:40 p.m. CT. The next states in the path of totality are Oklahoma and Arkansas, where the eclipse begins in Little Rock at 12:33 p.m. CT.

Cleveland will see the beginning of the eclipse at 1:59 p.m. ET. Darkness will start spreading over the sky in Buffalo, New York, at 2:04 p.m. ET. Then, the eclipse will reach northwestern Vermont, including Burlington, at 2:14 p.m. ET. Parts of New Hampshire and Maine will also follow in the path of totality before the eclipse first reaches the Canadian mainland  at 3:13 p.m. ET.

Although the experience won't be exactly the same, viewers in all the contiguous U.S. states outside the path of totality will still be able to see a partial eclipse. Some places will see most of the sun blocked by the moon, including Washington, D.C., where the partial eclipse will start at 2:04 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:20 p.m. ET.

In Chicago, viewers can start viewing the partial eclipse at 12:51 p.m. CT, with the peak arriving at 2:07 p.m. CT.  In Detroit, viewers will be able to enjoy a near-total eclipse beginning at 1:58 p.m. ET and peaking at 3:14 p.m. ET.

New York City will also see a substantial partial eclipse, beginning at 2:10 p.m. ET and peaking around 3:25 p.m. ET.

In Boston it will begin at 2:16 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:29 p.m. ET.

The below table by NASA shows when the eclipse will start, peak and end in 13 cities along the eclipse's path.

What time will the solar eclipse reach peak totality?

Millions more people will have the chance to witness the total solar eclipse this year than during the last total solar eclipse , which was visible from the U.S. in 2017.

The eclipse's peak will mean something different for cities within the path of totality and for those outside. Within the path of totality, darkness will fall for a few minutes. The longest will last more than 4 minutes, but most places will see between 3.5 and 4 minutes of totality. In cities experiencing a partial eclipse, a percentage of the sun will be obscured for more than two hours.

Mazatlán is set to experience totality at 11:07 am PT. Dallas will be able to see the moon fully cover the sun at 1:40 p.m. CT. Little Rock will start to see the full eclipse at 1:51 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 3:13 p.m. ET and Buffalo at 3:18 p.m. ET. Totality will reach Burlington at 3:26 p.m. ET before moving into the remaining states and reaching Canada around 4:25 p.m.

Outside the path of totality, 87.4% of the sun will be eclipsed in Washington, D.C. at 3:20 p.m. ET, and Chicago will have maximum coverage of 93.9% at 2:07 p.m. CT. New York City is much closer to the path of totality this year than it was in 2017; it will see 89.6% coverage at 3:25 p.m. EDT.

Detroit is another city that will encounter a near-total eclipse, with 99.2% maximum coverage at 3:14 p.m. ET. Boston will see 92.4% coverage at 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse end?

The eclipse will leave continental North America from Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NT, according to NASA.

At the beginning of the path of totality in Mazatlán, the eclipse will be over by 12:32 p.m. PT, and it will leave Dallas at 3:02 p.m. CT. The eclipse will end in Little Rock at 3:11 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 4:29 p.m. CDT and Buffalo at 4:32 p.m. ET. Burlington won't be far behind, with the eclipse concluding at 4:37 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, the viewing will end in Chicago at 3:21 p.m. CT, Washington, D.C. at 4:32 p.m. ET, and New York City at 4:36 p.m. ET.

In Detroit, the partial eclipse will disappear at 4:27 p.m. ET, and in Boston, it will be over at 4:39 p.m. ET.

How long will the eclipse last in total?

The total solar eclipse will begin in Mexico at 11:07 a.m. PT and leave continental North America at 5:16 p.m. NT. From the time the partial eclipse first appears on Earth to its final glimpses before disappearing thousands of miles away, the celestial show will dazzle viewers for about 5 hours, according to timeanddate.com .

The length of the total solar eclipse at points along the path depends on the viewing location. The longest will be 4 minutes and 28 seconds, northwest of Torreón, Mexico. Near the center of the path, totality takes place for the longest periods of time, according to NASA.

Spectators will observe totality for much longer today than during the 2017 eclipse , when the longest stretch of totality was 2 minutes and 32 seconds.

The moon's shadow seen on Earth today, called the umbra, travels at more than 1,500 miles per hour, according to NASA. It would move even more quickly if the Earth rotated in the opposite direction.

What is the longest a solar eclipse has ever lasted?

The longest known totality was 7 minutes and 28 seconds in 743 B.C. However, NASA says this record will be broken in 2186 with a 7 minute, 29 second total solar eclipse. The next total solar eclipse visible from parts of the U.S. won't happen until Aug. 23, 2044.
