Fall Color Tour was well worth it

We took the 10:30am fall color tour. It was a beautiful time of the year to go. Much of the ride is in the trees, during some portions you can see the river. We saw a pair of bald eagles perched high along the river. Each train car has different seating, and you are free to walk between the cars and choose your seat. We chose the car with the turquoise vinyl seats. They were large and roomy and the windows were nice and big to look out of. There was a small concession area on the train, but it was pretty busy so we didn't use it. You can also stand on the little platform between the train cars and look in the open air, which was really nice for photos. Great staff, friendly and informative too! Would highly recommend for all ages, families, couples, friends. Great prices too!

fall color tour osceola wi

Disappointed that there was no narration about the history of the railroad or the area during the entire trip ….Information about parking by Dairy Queen ok but didn’t tell where the depot was from there and there were no signs…had to call the depot. We did enjoy the foliage but wasn’t enough to keep us interested

Went on the pizza train to Marine on the St Croix. Pizza was hot and good, drink selection was great, soda, juice or energy drink and a fudge brownie for dessert. Would recommend to couples or families. Great experience for all. Beautiful scenery on a historical Railway. Staff was very friendly and attentive.

Fantastic trip through the St Croix river valley! Vintage railway cars lets you see, feel & smell life from a bygone era. Very informative on board crew. You can walk through all of the passenger cars, each from a different period. You don't have to be a train geek to love this experience. Do it/don't miss it. Also take a minute to visit downtown Oseola. Small town America is the best

The whole experience was fun filled. Staff was friendly, wine was delicious and ride was delightful.

The trip was worth every penny and every minute of it! We took our 5 yr old grandson there, and he just would not leave! He enjoyed it so much!

Experience Wisconsin's changing colors with these 5 scenic fall train rides

By travel wisconsin.

WISCONSIN—Fall in Wisconsin is all about the color. As September rolls in and leaves become a medley of reds and golds, color-lovers from all around start making plans to get outside and appreciate it. But there’s more to the Wisconsin fall color experience than just seeing it — it’s how you see it that makes all the difference, turning an event into a memorable adventure. An adventure meant to be shared with the people who matter most.

This autumn, climb aboard one of Wisconsin’s historic trains for a fall color show that’s sure to impress — we’ll save you a spot by the window!

Mid-Continent Railway – North Freedom

See the scenic Baraboo Hills ablaze with fall foliage from your seat on this turn-of-the-century steam train. The seven-mile journey though rural Sauk County provides ample opportunity to spot changing leaves. Ride in one of the restored passenger coaches or, for an extra-special trip, the caboose!

Visit on select weekends for special fall-themed rides, including a Harvest Train (running the same weekend as Sauk County’s Fermentation Fest ) and the Pumpkin Special.

Riverside & Great Northern Railway – Wisconsin Dells

Families flock to the Riverside & Great Northern Railway to hop aboard this small-sized, kid-friendly steam locomotive, the only one of its kind in the area. Its open-air cars wind through the woods of northern Wisconsin Dells and put you up close and personal with gorgeous scenery. Expect to pass through scenic canyons and rock cuts along the Dells of the Wisconsin River, in addition to great color.

To make a day of it, pack a picnic to enjoy outside the depot — you’ll be near enough to the tracks to watch the trains roll by!

Osceola & St. Croix Valley Railway – Osceola

Feel like you're traveling back in time with a ride on this historic railway, whose vintage train cars and unspoiled views harken back to life in the 1940’s. See the banks of the beautiful St. Croix Riverway draped in its autumn best on the Marine run (a longer ride along the bluffs, chugging over the river and into Minnesota before rounding back), the Dresser run (a shorter ride, great for families with small children) or on one of their many fall- and dinner-themed excursions.

Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad – Spooner

Meet Madeline. She’s an adorable, self-propelled train car (affectionately known as a “doodlebug”) beautifully restored for sightseeing around Northwest Wisconsin. Spot popping color on your trek along the Namekagon River as Madeline leads you to a scenic overlook only reachable by train or canoe.

Hungry for more? Book a seat on the railroad’s popular family pizza train for dinner with a view. It’s a slice of happiness that can end a family getaway on a perfect note.

East Troy Electric Railroad – East Troy

A full day of fall magic begins aboard the East Troy Railroad, on a charming seven-mile ride through thick colored forest. All rails stop at the Elegant Farmer , a popular family apple orchard packed with all the makings of a perfect fall day: pick-your-own apples, a corn maze, hayrides, homemade treats and more. Finish up with a return trip on the restored electric trolley — definitely more relaxing (and memorable!) than driving the car.

And while you’re at the Elegant Farmer, don’t miss a slice of their famous apple pie. This paper-bag-baked dessert has a well-deserved reputation for being some of the very best.

Keep up-to-date with how color is progressing around the state with our Fall Color Report .

The landscape alone makes the trip to Osceola, WI worth it. A scenic drive that crests small hills and winds along the St. Croix River, with family farms swelling above a rolling sea of golden corn fields eventually giving way to mammoth roadside rock cliffs and forestland painted in an explosion of  color. Since the steamboat and railroad eras, travelers have sought out Osceola in the fall to admire the deep maroon of sumac and Virginia creeper, the yellows and golds of hackberry, aspen and green ash, and the rich oranges and reds of sugar maples and pin oaks mingling with the ever-green evergreens. But Osceola is so much more than a pretty view. Discover unforgettable things to do and places to eat and stay while you pursue the hues. Don’t forget your camera.

Fall Colors in Minnesota: 10 Tours for Families

Girl holding red/orange leaf in front of her face. "Fall Colors in Minnesota: 10 Tours for Families"

My absolute, without a doubt, favorite time of the year is the fall. When the air turns crisp in the evenings, the sunlight takes on that autumn glow, and I can smell the earthy scent of the maturing plants and the smoky aroma of bonfires and barbecues, I shiver in delight. When I can pull out my favorite sweater or jeans and lace up my cute leather boots while packing my children’s school supplies, I grin. While making a cup of coffee and wrapping myself in my favorite afghan to sit on my front step, I sigh and enjoy the fleeting fall colors.

Fall is so perfect. It’s also the most fleeting season in Minnesota. With a snap of the fingers, the leaves change colors. With only a narrow window of time to enjoy the fall color around the Twin Cities, it’s time to plan ahead. We’ve rounded up ten ideas of places you can bring your family to enjoy the beauty of the season.

Try jumping across the Prescott, WI bridge. Take a right and follow WI 35 as far as you want. Only the oaks are left now. But every hue of red, orange, and yellow. You drive along the Mississippi who’s beauty way surpasses Minnesota’s. Move inland toward Elsworth, Eau Galle, Durand, Lund. The huge hills, valleys for miles, colors. All I can say every time when I drive it, which is lots, is WOW. We usually make it a half day trip.

I love that area so so much! This is a fantastic suggestion.

Fall color road trip: Minnesota’s Saint Croix Valley

Leaf season is here, so it’s time to take a fall color road trip. One of the best (and shortest!) leaf peeping routes around the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul can be found just down the road in the Saint Croix Valley.

It’s easy to spend a few hours or a full day exploring the Saint Croix Valley. You’ll find gorgeous fall colors, wonderful views over the Saint Croix River, and a couple of charming towns. There are even opportunities to get out on the water!

Leaf peeping in Minnesota’s Saint Croix Valley

This fall color road trip stays on the Minnesota side of the Saint Croix River. It includes the river valley from I-94 to Wild River State Park, and is intended to be a full day adventure.

Travelers with less time can follow 95 up to Interstate Park and still get an eyeful of fall color. If you have all day, do some hiking, take a cruise on the Saint Croix River, or rent a boat and explore the river on your own. Those with a couple of days can spend more time in the parks or cross the Saint Croix River to explore the equally scenic Wisconsin side of the valley.

Scenic state parks

All of the parks on this fall color road trip here have trails of various lengths. Park staff can direct you to the best color, as different parts of each park will reach their peak color at slightly different times.

Wild River State Park

It’s easy to feel as if you are very far from the city in Wild River State Park . With acres of maple, ash, birch, and aspen, Wild River literally glows during the fall.

Wild River State park in fall - www.ExplorationVacation.net

Wild River State Park offers gorgeous fall colors along wooded trails.

Stop at the visitor center for sweeping views of the valley and tips on where to find the best fall color.

Interstate State Park

Located just outside Taylors Falls, Interstate Park is popular for the wide range of activities available. The park’s rocky cliffs are popular with climbers and boats of all kinds can be found on the river here during summer. But fall may be the park’s most beautiful season, when the trees along the river put on a fabulous fall show.

Interstate Park in late summer - www.ExplorationVacation.net

Interstate Park’s mix of evergreens and deciduous trees and rocky cliffs make for a truly striking scene — once the leaves turn.

The park has a number of short, easy trails that let everyone enjoy the fall leaves. (And explore the rocky cliffs and potholes.)

  • Rocks, flowers, water and more at Interstate State Park

For those with time to explore more, Wisconsin’s Interstate Park offers a wide range of trails just across the river.

William O’Brien State Park

Less spectacular than the other St. Croix Valley Parks, William O’Brien State Park offers a quiet place to enjoy fall colors in the prairies and woodlands along the river and Lake Alice.

Just think how beautiful this trail in William O’Brien State Park will be when fall comes!

Charming towns

The St. Croix River is home to a number of charming towns and villages. The smallest of these, like Scandia and Marine on St. Croix, are pleasant places to take a quick break.

For a more substantial break, Stillwater is best option. Although there are other towns worth visiting, Stillwater offers both the largest number of options for visitors and the most charming setting. Just don’t get lost in all the restaurants, bars, cafes, tasting rooms, antique shops, gift shops, clothing shops, and other diversions available if you want time see a few fall leaves too!

Chisago City and Lindström

Highway 8 winds past a number of lakes and through the small towns of Chisago City and Lindström. As you may have guessed from the spelling, this area was settled by Swedish immigrants and retains a fair amount of that history and culture. While there is a lot of ugly sprawl along the highway, it obscures a couple of pleasant little towns with some interesting Scandinavian shops and cafes. If you are in the area in the morning, be sure to stop in for a pastry!

Taylors Falls and St Croix Falls

Farther up the river, Taylors Falls, also retains much of its historic character, but lacks the dining and shopping options found in Stillwater.

Across the river in Wisconsin, St. Croix Falls is a pleasant place for a stroll. There is a nice park with an expansive view. However, there are few dining and shopping options in its historic heart.

View from the river overlook in Saint Croix Falls.

I tried to explore Osceola, Wisconsin, the other year, but we got to town just as the parade for a big local festival was about to begin. That means we were directed away from what looks to be an interesting town with a good-sized historic business district. It looks like it is worth a stop – I know I’ll try to visit again.

When it comes to historic river towns, it doesn’t get any better than Stillwater.

Built along the bluffs above the St. Croix River, Stillwater is one of Minnesota’s oldest towns. It’s also a town where that history is easily seen in the architecture. Whether you wander the shops and restaurants along Main Street or climb the bluff to explore the historic residential area, you’ll be surrounded by 19 th and early 20 th century architecture built to impress.

Stillwater shop - www.ExplorationVacation.net

Stillwater is known for its specialty shops.

And the food and shopping are great too, so this is a great place to stop for a bite to eat and stroll through town.

Other stops along the way

Franconia sculpture park.

Once you get a glimpse of the Franconia Sculpture Park , you’ll want to stop and take a closer look. This always evolving outdoor gallery has a fascinating collection of pieces.

Wild Mountain Winery

While a number of regional wines can be sampled in the tasting room in Stillwater, you can also taste wines right where they are made at Wild Mountain Winery . The winery is open for tastings on weekend afternoons. Visitors are also invited to come out and help with the harvest on select Saturdays in October.

Gammelgården Museum

The Gammelgården Museum preserves the history of Minnesota’s Swedish immigrants through exhibitions and historic buildings. The main exhibition is open daily, however, tours of the historic buildings are only held on weekends. I’ve never managed to work a visit into my schedule, but it looks like an interesting stop when the historic buildings are open.

Osceola & St. Croix Valley Railway

I haven’t done this yet, but the Minnesota Transportation Museum runs a historic train between Osceola, Wisconsin, and Marine on St. Croix. This scenic 90-minute train ride begins and ends in Osceola. It only operates on weekends.

River cruises

While this is a road trip, taking a little time for a cruise on the Saint Croix is a great way to enjoy the fall colors.

Both the Saint Croix Boat and Packet Company in Stillwater and Taylors Falls Scenic Boat Tours offer cruises on modern paddlewheel boats. This is a lovely, relaxing way to see some of the most dramatic scenery along the St. Croix River. Tours are available every day during the fall leaf season. Snacks are available on board and a number of tours with meals are also available.

River boat in Stillwater - www.explorationvacation.net

  • To get an idea of what you will see on the Taylors Falls cruise, check out my end of summer cruise .

There are several spots where you can rent a canoe or kayak for a few hours, but the handiest is probably Taylors Falls Canoe and Kayak in Interstate Park or Muller Boat in William O’Brien State Park.

Tips for your Saint Croix Valley fall color road trip

Fall leaf color is usually best late in September, but that can vary over a few weeks. (A hard frost often triggers a good color change within a few days.)

Generally you are likely to find some mix of fall color in this area from late-September through mid-October. Check the DNR Fall Color Finder for the most up-to-date color info for Wild River and Interstate state parks to know when to go touring.

The most scenic route

For the best scenery on your fall color road trip, follow state highway 95 along the Saint Croix River between I-94 and the turn-off for Wild River State Park.

If you don’t have time to drive highway 95 in both directions, I’d recommend taking I-35 to the northernmost point you plan to visit (either Wild River or Taylors Falls) and work your way back to the Twin Cities on highway 95. Although not the shortest route, connecting to highway 95 via highway 8 through Lindström and Chisago City is the most interesting way to go.

Drive highway 95 in the afternoon to get the best light on the Wisconsin shoreline across the river.

State park permits

All three state parks on this route require a Minnesota state park vehicle permit . All permits, including daily permits, must be purchased online. The same daily permit can be used at all three Minnesota State Parks during the course of the day. However, if you spread your visit over two days, you’ll either need an annual permit or two daily permits.

If you do the Saint Croix River cruise out of Interstate Park, you’ll get a permit to park there for the day when you check in for your cruise.

Beautiful pictures as always, Cindy! I’d love to walk through Wild River State Park. I was hoping to see a bit of fall colour when I was in Ohio in September, but because it was still so hot, only a few of the trees had started to change.

Aw, sorry to hear you missed the leaves when you back. They’ve been late this year, but are starting to get nice. Fall leaves are one thing the USA does really well!

Where are the best places to see fall foliage in Minnesota?

Fall foliage train rides in Minnesota aren’t the only option for viewing the colors of the season. There are several places to soak in the state’s seasonal vistas, including Chippewa National Forest . Spanning 1.6 million acres, it’s brimming with natural beauty, which only gets better in autumn, as shades of red, orange, and yellow consume the forest. The beautiful sights don’t end with the vibrant leaves, though. All in all, the forest boasts over 1,300 lakes! Among the many bodies of water in the forest is Leech Lake. The lovely lake is a hit with water enthusiasts. And in the fall, when surrounded by colorful leaves, it’s a hit with leaf-peepers, too.

What are the best pumpkin patches in Minnesota?

Before finding the perfect pumpkin, you’ve got to find the perfect pumpkin patch. Fortunately, there are several in the state to choose from, including Grandpa’s Pumpkin Patch . Located in St. Joseph, Grandpa’s Pumpkin Patch boasts hordes of gourds, including pumpkins and squash as well as Indian corn, corn shocks, straw bales, and local honey. The patch typically opens the third week of September; however, it’s best to check the hours of operation prior to visiting. Country Sun Farm is another fall must-visit. Touted as the “premier pumpkin patch on the east side of the Twin Cities", the Lake Elmo farm doesn’t have a traditional pumpkin patch; however, it does have a retail store with thousands of pre-picked pumpkins as well as gourds, squash, mums, and various fall décor. There’s also an array of kids rides and games, gem mining, a corn pit, and more.
