The best travel and weather apps for iPhone

Our favorite iPhone apps for planning a holiday, currency conversion, weather forecasts and mapping.

Screenshots showing Currenzy on iPhone

  • $4.99/£4.49/AU$7.99

Currenzy isn’t your typical currency converter. Sure, it’s got the basics down: a calculator interface; a means to check out how a currency has performed against another; widgets; a way to define favorites. But the app goes much further than its contemporaries.

If you regularly perform certain actions, they can be stashed as big, tappable buttons, thereby speeding things up immeasurably. The app also has support for custom exchange rates and fees. Additionally, it works inside Safari, letting you convert prices on web pages from the currency that’s displayed to the one you need.

Along with all those things, Currenzy looks great too, making it the king of currency converters – and at a reasonable price for an app of such high quality.

CARROT Weather

CARROT Weather

CARROT Weather provides forecasts laced with snark from the CARROT AI, which has all the grace of a deranged HAL 9000. Rainfall predictions arrive with a message that it “sucks to be you”. Sunny days? “I brought out the sun so I can blind you with it.” Nice.

But CARROT Weather is more than a gimmick. It has best-in-class visual design and a powerful customization system. You get a wide range of panels and components to adjust and arrange to your liking. And when using the app, a long-press almost anywhere provides access to further data or useful settings.

All this – along with superb widgets and Apple Watch features – comes at a price: an annual subscription of $19.99/£19.49/AU$32.99. But if you care about the weather and want the best weather app around, this one’s worth the outlay.

Weather on the Way

Weather on the Way

  • Free or $0.99/£0.99/AU$1.49 monthly

Weather on the Way is a weather app for road trips. Define start and end points and your route is displayed on a map. However, unlike in Apple Maps, weather symbols appear at periodic intervals, with temperature and conditions at each location alongside the estimated time you’ll drive through.

Everything’s usable and clear, weather alerts are integrated to warn you about potential problems, and there’s a linear timeline displayed when you press a massive button. This adds further details, including visibility and UV. Neatly, this timeline can be shared as an image.

The app gives you three journeys with full functionality for free. Subsequent journey information becomes more limited if you don’t pay, and you get stuck with a single route for each search. However, the low monthly IAP cost means you can always pay for this one when you need it, and unsubscribe when you don’t.

Dark Sky Weather

Dark Sky Weather

  • US$3.99/£3.99

Dark Sky Weather started out primarily as a rainfall tracker, with luminous clouds billowing over a dark background map. Now, the app is much more conventional – but arguably massively more useful.

The main forecast page shows current conditions and a local map. Usefully, little arrows denote the direction a storm’s heading, so you can always spot that at a glance, rather than having to check the full animated rainfall view. Below that you get rainfall predictions for the hour, the daily forecast, and a weekly outlook. It’s all very sleek, efficient and usable.

The app’s accuracy may vary by location, but during testing in various countries we’ve found its rainfall predictions to be spot-on. It’s also a nicely flexible app regarding warnings – several notifications are built in, and you can add your own based on a range of weather conditions.

V for Wikipedia

V for Wikipedia

  • $5.99/£5.99/AU$9.99

V for Wikipedia is a Wikipedia reader. That in itself might sound like an odd recommendation for a premium app, but bear with us.

Although V can be used to search Wikipedia in the normal way, it starts off in its Nearby tab, flagging articles of interest in your vicinity. This looks great, tabs snaking their way from map locations to large thumbnails. It’s practical, too, for finding out more about the local area, without resorting to review-oriented web services.

This sense of polish extends to the article views. Typography and layout are first class, and a slide-in contents list is only a tap away. So while you might narrow your eyes at the prospect of paying for a Wikipedia reader, Viki will have said eyes busily and regularly reading the world’s most dynamic encyclopedia.

WeatherPro

  • $0.99/79p/AU$0.99

WeatherPro is a weather app designed for people who favor information density over aesthetics. That’s not to say WeatherPro looks bad – its white-on-blue stylings are perfectly nice. But where it excels is in providing fast access to a wealth of weather data.

For any selected location, a single screen shows the current conditions, a local radar, upcoming predictions and then a forecast for the coming week. The latter packs temperatures, sun hours, precipitation forecasts and wind speeds into a tiny space.

In pretty much all cases, tapping on something lets you delve into even more information, and additional taps provide layered mapping and radar services. Accessing some layers requires an IAP subscription, but just the bare-bones WeatherPro is a great buy if you want at-a-glance forecasts packed with detail.

Citymapper

Citymapper is a navigation aid for finding your way around big cities. It doesn’t cover the entire globe, but is instead focused on a handful of major destinations, such as New York, Chicago, Tokyo, London, Paris and Sydney. Locations are periodically added by way of user votes.

If you live in or visit a supported city, Citymapper is superb for helping you find your way around more efficiently. The app quickly finds where you are and offers options – in real-time – of how to reach your intended target.

And small details really help it stand out, such as you being able to track the location of a bus you’re waiting for, alerts that blare when your stop’s coming up, and even recommendations of the best carriage to get on – and the fastest station exit to use.

Google Maps

Google Maps

Google Maps is the best mapping app on iPhone.

It’s extremely good at locating places you want to visit, be that a distant town or a point of interest like a restaurant or store. When it comes to turn-by-turn driving directions, the voiceovers lack the nuance of Apple’s Maps, but the actual directions tend to be more helpful when it comes to dealing with incidents like congestion.

Google Maps is great for planning and non-car use, too. There are reviews and recommendations for places to go, public transport routing, and Street View – a navigable 3D street-level map for scoping out landmarks that proves handy when traveling somewhere or visiting a new place.

Importantly, you can also download chunks of map for offline use, turning Google Maps into a turn-by-turn navigator even when you lack a data connection.

Elk

  • $3.99/£3.99/AU$5.99

We’ve lost count of how many currency converters exist on the App Store, but it’s vanishingly rare to see anyone try something properly different.

Elk bucks the trend, with a unique interface and approach that might not appeal to traders, but feels very much like currency conversion for the rest of us.

On firing up the app, you select your two currencies and it offers a list of current rate conversions. For USD to EUR, for example, you get a list of the rates for one through ten dollars. Swiping from the right increases these values by ten. To access rates between two values, tap an entry.

Smartly, you can also input a fixed rate, for example to track your spending on a holiday when you’ve already got your cash. Most of the features are behind a paywall, but a 14-day trial lets you try them for free.

Poison Maps

Poison Maps

  • $1.99/£1.99/AU$2.99

This one’s all about ‘points of interest’, hence the name – Poison Maps (‘POIs on maps’). Essentially, it’s a wealth of information from OpenStreetMap shoved into an app and twinned with an interface that makes it a cinch to drill down into categories.

So, mooching about London and fancy a bite to eat? Tap on the food and drink icon. Something quick? Tap Fast Food. Pizza? Sounds good.

Each tap filters the POIs and navigation buttons displayed, and arrows point at nearby locations when you’re zoomed in. Everything’s extremely responsive, and the maps and icons are clear and easy to read. Other nice bits include a full-screen mode, a search function, and public transport overlays.

The only snag is Poison Maps is a gargantuan install – well over 1GB. If that’s a bit rich, smaller regional alternatives by the same developer exist, each being a free download with a small IAP to unlock all categories.

Best Travel Safety Apps For iPhone & Android

travel safety apps - smart traveler

1. Smart Traveler (iOS & Android)

Created by the U.S. Department of State, this app provides specific government information about a foreign destination such as current travel warnings and alerts.

It also gives contact information for U.S. embassies and consulates.

Travelers that have signed up with the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) can also access their account through the app.

This app is a must-download for American citizens traveling abroad!

Personal Safety Apps - Emergency

2.  Emergency App (iOS & Android)

Looking for travel safety tips?

Don’t leave home without installing this app!

Developed by the American Red Cross, this all-inclusive app serves as a “go-to” resource for what travelers can do in the case of 14 different types of emergencies and disasters within the U.S.

Users can customize more than 35 emergency alerts based on their location and where their contacts live.

The app also contains a kit of emergency first aid information advising on everything from heart attacks to heatstroke.

 Sitata travel safety app

3.  Sitata (iOS & Android)

Focused on health and safety, the company behind this app monitors media sites worldwide for news on real-time events happening around the globe that can disrupt travel.

Their alerts are displayed on a map alongside additional information and “what to do” advice currently in over 200 countries.

Neat feature alert:

Sitata has a community board where travelers are permitted to write — and read — posts about their experiences on anything from a transportation tip to warnings about pickpockets.

4. NordVPN (Windows, iOS & Android)

Accessible — even free — Wi-Fi is great, but an open network can put travelers at risk for online identity theft or even having information from their credit cards and other important documents stolen.

This app turns into a VPN (Virtual Private Network), enabling users to connect to a remote server and direct traffic through a secure network, surfing the web with a bank-level encrypted connection.

They also can change their IP address to match their preferred location.

A VPN is absolutely necessary for full-time travel bloggers , digital nomads, and those working abroad, and SaferVPN makes it easy to stay safe while you stay connected.

travel safety apps - bSafe

5. bSafe (iOS & Android)

Instead of sharing your location on social media in real-time, which isn’t very safe, opt for this location-sharing app.

This version lets users set up a network of friends, family members, and coworkers to share your location, but takes their level of contact much further to really help people travel safely.

Its Follow Me feature operates by using the phone’s GPS to trace the steps of a person walking home so that their contacts can “follow” them in real-time.

A Timer Mode can be set to trigger an alert if the user hasn’t checked in, and a Guardian Alert button can be pressed to notify loved ones if you’re in trouble.

And if you’re home, the “I’m Here” option lets who you want to know where you are.

Trip Lingo Travel Safety App

6. Trip Lingo (iOS & Android)

Featuring a whole host of tools to help people explore new countries, Trip Lingo is a must-download for any traveler.

Voice translation, phrasebooks, and culture notes help you communicate with locals while travel tools and a tip calculator keep you in the know wherever you go.

To keep you safe, Trip Lingo features tools like local emergency information and medical phrases in a host of different languages and a WiFi dialer that will keep you connected without racking up roaming fees.

Red Panic Button - personal safety apps

7. Red Panic Button (iOS & Android)

Whether it is your first time traveling or your 100th, installing travel safety apps is smart, especially ones like Red Panic Button that are simple yet effective for keeping you safe on the go.

Set an emergency contact phone number or email in the app and as soon as you press the red button, the app will use your GPS location to send an alert to your contact with your exact location.

You can also send a voice recording to your contact list to share more details on your emergency.

GeoSure travel safety app

8. GeoSure (iOS & Android)

Whether you’re planning your itinerary weeks in advance or exploring a new city on a whim, be sure to check in with GeoSure before you go.

This app assesses cities and neighborhoods based on their safety conditions including violence, theft, human rights issues, and more.

GeoSure even factors in the safety of those in marginalized communities and scores areas based on LGBTQ+ and women’s safety.

This one is definitely worth downloading when researching new travel destinations.

TripWhistle travel safety app

9. TripWhistle (iOS)

Three-digit emergency numbers vary around the world and few of us have time to memorize every single one.

That’s where TripWhistle comes in.

This app lists emergency numbers for 196 different countries and allows you to call for help right in the app.

TripWhistle will also provide emergency services with your coordinates, making it an essential download for international travelers.

Travel Safety Apps - Haven

10. Haven (Android)

Looking for a way to travel safe without compromising your privacy?

Haven has you covered.

This Android app uses your device’s sensors to detect motion, sound, vibration, and light and alert you to any disturbances or potentially dangerous situations in your surroundings.

Think of it as your own personal home security system on the go, as Haven will watch over you wherever you’re traveling.

cdc travwell personal safety app

11. CDC TravWell (iOS & Android)

Staying safe on the road also means staying healthy and it’s important to be aware of any potential health risks on your travels.

Download the free CDC TravWell app to get up-to-date health warnings for locations around the world.

The app lets you log your destinations ahead of time, get information on necessary vaccines and medications for different locations, and store your travel documents and medical records all in one place.

For the planners out there, the app’s to-do list and packing list features are a major asset!

RunGo travel safety app

12. RunGo (iOS & Android)

RunGo is an essential app for the traveling runner.

This app features popular running trails in cities around the world, voice-guided tours and navigation, and tools to track your stats.

From a personal safety standpoint, the app features verified and vetted routes, helping you stay safe when running in an unfamiliar location.

tourlina safety app for solo travelers

13. Tourlina (iOS & Android)

Looking to meet up with your fellow solo travelers?

Download Tourlina, a women-only network of travelers from around the world.

While traveling solo can be life-changing , there are likely times where you’d rather be with someone else than alone.

With Tourlina, you can meet other women to buddy up within a safe and reliable online environment.

All users are verified by the Tourlina app so you can stay safe while making new friends.

Travel Safety Beyond Apps

For safety beyond apps, I recommend the following travel tips:

  • Wondering what things you really need to pack? While a money belt can be a smart option, for something more stylish and functional I suggest grabbing some Clever Travel Companion Pickpocket-Proof Garments , which feature hidden interior pockets for valuables. This means thieves never even know you’re carrying valuables in the first place.
  • Get a She’s Birdie Personal Safety Alarm , which you can wear like a bracelet. Simply pull the pin to have it blare like a fire truck when danger comes near. Seriously, you need this simple yet powerful piece of travel safety equipment !
  • Opt for travel medical insurance . My go-to travel insurance carrier when traveling abroad or within the United States is SafetyWing , which has comprehensive straightforward plans at a budget-friendly price.

Sitata is terrible. I had gotten it for my regular residency in Europe, was not happy with having to pay but figured my safety was worth it. Traveling often, I have learned that especially with tech stuff, always good to have some redundancies. So, i also had downloaded two free apps. The entire time, sitata didn’t work. The two free apps constantly kept me updated including mention of a growing protest near where I was. Once back in the states i uninstalled sitata got in touch with them and received the equivalent of a shrug of the shoulders.

These apps are really good. I used one of those apps and that app proved helpful to me.

30 essential travel apps every traveler needs before their next trip

Lori Zaino

When it comes to planning and taking a vacation, travelers rely on their phones now more than ever.

Travel apps are a source of inspiration and are extremely useful for booking and managing logistics — even making restaurant reservations or finding a great fitness class wherever in the world you're flying next.

From apps that help with everything from day-of hotel bookings and last-minute flight changes to those that serve as guidebooks and foreign-language dictionaries, travel is infinitely easier thanks to technology.

Apps can help you navigate a new city, make currency conversions, pack a perfect suitcase and even provide on-the-ground local expertise. Whatever you need when you hit the road, there's an app for that.

We've rounded up the most-loved apps here at TPG. Some may be obvious, and others more obscure, but either way, get ready to download.

Best apps for researching and booking trips

In addition to the apps for the airlines you fly most frequently and your favorite hotel brands, these apps can help you save money on flights and accommodations.

best travel alerts app ios

Hopper has changed in recent years from just offering a price prediction tool for flights to being a true online travel agency. The app helps travelers find the cheapest flights, hotels and rental cars.

Of course, Hopper also still offers its signature price prediction technology to help you plan out when to book, as well as travel protection options and a price freeze to help you lock in the lowest possible price on hotels and flights.

best travel alerts app ios

Kiwi is used mainly to book flights, but it also helps you book hotels (using its partnership with Booking.com) and car rentals (using its partnership with RentalCars.com).

Some of the app's most interesting features include the "Deals" section, which pulls in discounted flights, and the "Travel hacks" section, which includes options for hidden city ticketing, throwaway ticketing (making one-way flights more affordable) and free price alerts.

Hotel Tonight

best travel alerts app ios

A dream for last-minute travelers, Hotel Tonight ( now owned by Airbnb ) lets you book stays for the same evening up to a few months in advance in thousands of cities worldwide. Available hotel rooms are categorized into sections like basic, luxe, hip, charming and solid, so you can select what works for your vibe. Take advantage of the daily drop feature, where you swipe to find a personalized deal with a special price only valid for 15 minutes after unlocked.

At TPG, we love a good loyalty program, and HT Perks, the app's nine-level reward program, is extensive. Not unlike a video game, you "level up" by reaching specific spending thresholds on the app, and you'll gain access to perks like discounts, VIP customer support and credits. Also, your levels never expire, so you can only continue to move up.

best travel alerts app ios

To book home rentals instead of hotels, use the Airbnb app. After entering your destination and dates, you can filter results based on the home type, price, requisite amenities and more. If you find something you like, you can book directly through the app.

The app is ideal for managing your trips while on the road — you can access all your bookings under the "Trips" tab, where you can view your reservation (and the address or directions), contact the host or change your reservation. Once you have a booking, you can also explore and book local experiences in your destination, such as wine tastings, kayak tours, hikes, shows and concerts.

best travel alerts app ios

We can't talk about travel apps without mentioning the TPG App. Use it to track your credit card, airline and hotel points balances; earn points and miles efficiently through using the right credit card ; and research how many points or miles you'll need to book your dream getaway. You can even curate your own news feed so you see the news and advice that matters most to you first.

The TPG App is available for download on iOS . Android users can join the waitlist here .

TripIt declutters your itineraries and documents by keeping them organized in one place. You can set your reservations to automatically send to TripIt, which lets you view travel confirmations, flight itineraries, tickets, hotel and Airbnb booking information, rental car reservations, ferry tickets and driving directions without ever leaving the app.

TripIt also makes it simple to share your trip plans with whoever picks you up from the airport or train station or anyone else who may need to coordinate with you. TripIt Pro subscriptions cost $49 per year and include extras like real-time flight alerts, security wait times, baggage claim information and updates on your loyalty reward programs.

Roadtrippers

Perfect for organizing that epic road trip you've always wanted to take, Roadtrippers plans out your driving route and lets you book hotels and activities along the way. The app is especially useful for finding interesting and off-the-beaten-path roadside attractions, cool restaurants and can't-miss landmarks you can bookmark.

A Roadtrippers Premium membership includes offline maps, live traffic information, overnight RV parking and more for $59.99 per year. For those looking to only venture on a few road trips per year, the app also offers a Pro ($49.99 per year) and Basic ($35.99 per year) membership.

PackPoint takes all the stress out of packing . The app shows you what to bring based on the length of your trip, the weather in your destination and any activities you're planning along the way. If you have access to laundry facilities at your destination, PackPoint even allows you to account for washing your clothes and wearing them multiple times.

Just download and install the app, type in the city you're visiting and plug in your travel details. So, stop waiting until the day before your trip — or the hours before you have to leave for the airport — and start packing now.

Best apps for navigating the airport and flights

Track flights, navigate airports and find airport lounges with these apps.

LoungeBuddy

best travel alerts app ios

LoungeBuddy offers access to premium airport lounges around the world, regardless of the airline or class you're flying. When you create a trip in the app and type in the credit cards you currently hold, it will tell you which lounges you have access to based on the airports you'll be transiting through and how to purchase access if you don't already have it.

You can purchase access on the day you're traveling or up to two months in advance if you're the plan-ahead type. If you prefer to search by lounge or lounge program, the app will tell you exactly what is needed to use them.

Priority Pass

best travel alerts app ios

Priority Pass offers access to more than 1,300 lounges worldwide and provides meal vouchers at select airport restaurants across the world for an annual fee starting at $99.

Several cards, including The Platinum Card® from American Express , the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card and the Chase Sapphire Reserve , offer Priority Pass memberships for all cardholders (enrollment required). Otherwise, you'll have to pay an annual fee to be a member and, depending on your membership tier, a fee to enter each lounge on top of the annual fee.

To use the Priority Pass app, enter the name or code of the airport you're in, and Priority Pass will pull up the lounges or restaurants that you have access to, including photos, hours, amenities and specific location information. For more information on the Priority Pass Program and how to gain lounge access, click here . Enrollment is required for select benefits.

FlightAware

best travel alerts app ios

The FlightAware app allows you to track flights online, see a live map of a flight and check on delays, cancellations and gate changes. This app is especially helpful if you have a tight connection or want to track your flight.

It's also useful when picking up friends and family at the airport, as you can track their flight and see updated landing times or delays. AvGeeks will enjoy digging into flight statistics, flight maps and community aviation discussions on the app.

Best apps to use during your flight

Timeshifter.

best travel alerts app ios

What better way to cure jet lag than with an app? Timeshifter actually helps you avoid jet lag long before your flight takes off and also offers inflight and post-flight suggestions. The app relies on neuroscience research about sleep and circadian rhythms to provide personalized recommendations, taking into consideration your age, gender and normal sleep patterns — as well as specifics about your trip and travel plans. Timeshifter maps out when you should avoid or seek light, take a nap or try to stay awake. It even tells you if you should consider supplementing with melatonin or caffeine.

Your first jet lag plan is free, then $9.99 per plan, or you can enjoy unlimited plans for a year for $24.99.

Flying can cause anxiety — or provide a welcome relief from constant contact with our digital devices. Either way, use travel as an opportunity to relax, meditate or listen to soothing sounds that will lull you to sleep or a deep, relaxed state. Or, perhaps, you'll simply find it helps pass the time during a long flight.

Calm offers meditations on topics such as self-awareness, calming anxiety, breathing, lowering stress levels and happiness, among others. The app also has music options for focusing, relaxing and sleeping, as well as stories for adults and content for kids.

A limited selection of meditations and music is available for free (which you can download to use when you're offline or in flight). The premium version of the app costs $14.99 per month or $69.99 annually.

best travel alerts app ios

OK, so Netflix isn't really a travel app, but it can be a lifesaver during a long flight on an aircraft without seatback inflight entertainment or at the airport during an unexpected flight delay or boring layover. If you have a Netflix account, the app allows you to download your favorite shows onto your device to watch offline.

Just make sure to download your shows while connected to Wi-Fi before flying and check them again preflight to make sure they haven't expired (you can usually renew any expired downloads, but you must be connected to Wi-Fi or data to do so). Monthly prices vary depending on the plan.

Another app that's not really a travel app, Spotify can still be incredibly useful during tedious travel moments — just pop in those noise-canceling headphones and listen to your favorite music, meditations, podcasts and more.

The app's Premium plans (prices vary) allow you to download all your content offline on your phone, so you'll have it during long flights or when you don't have data or Wi-Fi access. Whether you want to take a morning jog in Bali to your favorite tunes or pass the time with a podcast on the metro in Barcelona, Spotify has it all.

Best apps to use in your destination

From exchanging money and sightseeing to communicating and knowing all the local tips and tricks, you don't want to land in a foreign city for the first time without these key apps.

XE Currency Converter

best travel alerts app ios

The XE Currency Converter app quickly provides live, up-to-the-minute currency rates, then allows you to store and view them even when you're offline. You'll never need to wonder if you're really getting a good deal in another country if you have this app.

Google Translate

best travel alerts app ios

Google Translate is a translation app that allows you to do it all — translate into more than 100 languages by typing, access 59 languages offline, translate via photo, translate bilingual conversations and even use the handwriting tool to translate.

TheFork is one of the most useful resources for making restaurant reservations in Europe. Similar to OpenTable or Resy, the app lets you browse different restaurants by category and make reservations. TheFork features more than 60,000 restaurants in cities like London, Madrid and Geneva, as well as spots outside of Europe like Sydney, Australia.

The biggest perk is that many restaurant reservations come with discounts — in some cases, you can get up to 50% off your meal just by reserving a table through TheFork. iPhone 14 Pro

The 3 best modern travel apps on ios for 2023.

Avatar for Fernando Silva

Traveling can be an exciting and enjoyable experience, but planning a trip can often be stressful, time-consuming, and ultimately have a poor outcome. Fortunately, with the help of iOS and the millions of apps in the iOS App Store, planning travel has become much easier. There are a plethora of travel apps available for iOS that can help you plan your trip, book your flights, and find the best deals. I am personally in the process of booking a trip in the fall with multiple flights, hotels, and countries. The three apps I will be mentioning have made planning this trip much, much easier.

Before we start

If you are a veteran of the travel hacking and credit card point game, then this post might not be for you. I will be primarily focusing on the apps that help you get the best deals from a dollar perspective, not point/miles redemption. Now let’s get started!

1. FareDrop

FareDrop has been one of my absolute favorite apps to help me find the best deals when it comes to flights. If you have a flexible schedule and like to travel for cheap, then look no further than FareDrop. This app is the brainchild of travel YouTubers Kara and Nate . They wanted to help people find cheap ways to travel so they could explore the world just as they have.

FareDrop works by monitoring price drops and notifying you when a deal is available. The app tracks prices for specific flights and sends notifications when the price drops, allowing you to book the flight at a lower cost. It’s easy to set up – all you do is select a few of the local airports around you, and then it uses that info to find flights from that origin airport. The prices shown on the dashboard are round-trip prices. So you can see that NYC to DC is only $108!

best travel alerts app ios

By default, FareDrop will provide you with free service for domestic economy flights. There are two other plans that are worth considering, especially if you are looking to fly internationally. The first paid plan is $49 a year and provides you with the same alert system but also includes international economy flights. The second and highest tier gives you access to business-class flights, both domestically and internationally, for $99 a year. So if you are looking to splurge on business class but still want to pay way less, then the Global Pro Plan could be for you. I have booked a few domestic flights with it, and it has saved me hundreds of dollars, just for me waiting for alerts to come in. It’s continuously improving and getting updated.

Hopper is another iOS app that is focused on helping you find the best deals on flights. The app uses advanced algorithms to predict when flight prices are likely to be at their lowest, and it can even suggest the best time to book your flight. Hopper claims that it can save users up to 40% on their flights by finding the best deals.

One of the best features of Hopper is its price-tracking functionality. You can set up alerts for specific flights, and the app will notify you when the price drops. You can also use the app to search for flights and compare prices across different airlines. Hopper also provides a price calendar that shows the best days to fly for the cheapest fares.

Hopper not only gives you pricing for flights, but it also can let you book hotels, car rentals, and even Airbnb-like rental homes. Over the years, Hopper has added an abundance of features, like free rewards, Carrot Cash, and even their own store. The main features are free to use, but you can purchase things like Hopper Matches, where Hopper will match up to $20 when you deposit money into their Carrot Cash system and more.

Some have said that Hopper has added almost too many functions and features – almost to the point where it’s a bit complicated – but if you have used Hopper in the past, then you know just how valuable it can be when planning travel months in advance. Their pricing calendar and alert system alone are worth giving Hopper a try.

best travel alerts app ios

Flighty is the new kid on the block. I learned about it when Live activities were introduced in iOS 16, and I began to see a very cool flight tracker on users’ lock screens. Flighty is a bit different from the first two apps I mentioned. Flighty is primarily used to keep tabs on your upcoming or current flight. But it gives so much more information than you ever thought possible.

best travel alerts app ios

Of course, you get the standard things like flight duration, departure, and arrival, but it goes much further than that. It helps you stay up to date on any changes to your flights, from delays to cancellations. The app uses machine learning algorithms to predict potential issues with your flights, and it can even suggest alternative flights in case of disruptions. This means that you can plan for any possible delays and avoid surprises at the airport.

Top comment by pbmv6060842

Respectfully and in appreciation of your rundown — these are airfare search tools, not “travel apps.”

One of the best features of Flighty is its ability to track your flights in real time. The app uses data from multiple sources to provide accurate information about your flight, including gate changes and estimated departure and arrival times. It can also provide push notifications about any changes to your flight status, so you are always up to date.

Then my favorite part of the app is the flight log. Flighty will start to track how many miles you have flown, the flights taken, from which airports, and how many countries you’ve visited. There is a free trial that unlocks all their cool services, and it costs $49.99 per year. If you travel more than once a year, I think it’s worth it!

best travel alerts app ios

These three travel apps are among the best options available for iOS users who want to plan their travel, find the best deals on flights, and track everywhere they are going. Whether you’re looking for real-time flight information, predictions on flight prices, or price tracking functionality, Flighty, Hopper, and FareDrop have got you covered. With the help of these apps, you can make your travel experience much more enjoyable, stress-free, and save some hard-earned cash along the way.

What do you think of these apps? Have you tried them before? How often do you travel? Let’s discuss in the comments and see what other readers do to maximize their dollars while traveling!

Planning & Organisation

In this busy day and age, there is always something we forget when trying to get on the road for a vacation. It might be your snorkel gear, sun cream, or forgetting to download that book you wanted to read. These apps help you stay organized.

There are also travel apps to show you fun things to do at your destination. If you’re looking for a nice place to eat, some interesting activities to do, or simply want to know all your options so you can make a plan, these apps have you covered.

Life’s so busy that making lists has become the norm to ensure nothing is forgotten. The notes section of our phones are jam-packed with everything from shopping lists to to-do lists, and most likely your vacation packing list. But, what if your list was made for you?

Packpoint, a travel  app available on iOs and Android , takes the headache out of remembering everything. It looks at the weather for your dates and destination, asks you what activities you might be doing (like snorkeling), and then creates a packing list for you based on all this info.

You’ll end up with a list of everything you need to pack, along with general holiday items, which you can then edit. You can remove the things you don’t need, add extras, re-order items, and share your list with others.

  • It makes a packing list for you
  • Your list is based on the dates, weather and any activities you want to do
  • You can add, remove and re-order items
  • You can share your list with your travel partners

TripIt, available on both iOS and Android , takes all your travel plans and puts them in one place to give you a master itinerary for your entire trip.

Simply send all your email confirmations to the app and they put together a full itinerary for you that syncs to your calendar and can be shared with your travel partners. You can also store all your travel documents in the atravel pp, so you have everything in one place.

Gone are the days of remembering 8 different connections or looking in your email for multiple confirmations and travel details, Tiplt puts it all together for you in one place.

There is also an option to upgrade to the pro version for $49 per year, and it’s worth it if you fly a lot. The pro version gives you extra features like flight alerts, terminal info, security wait times, airport maps, directions, and a seat tracker that lets you know when better seats are available.

  • Creates a master itinerary for you
  • Stores all your travel documents in one place
  • Upgrade to Pro for awesome extra features
  • Simple and easy to use

Learning Languages

There is no better way to enjoy your travels than being able to speak to the locals. Whether it is just ordering at a restaurant, or making new friends in your accommodation, it always pays to learn as much as you can.

Babbel is one of the leaders in online language learning, and a great way to immerse yourself in a new language before or during your travels.

The Babbel App is actually just a way to access language courses on your phone. They also provide access online, if you prefer to do it that way.

Their lessons are very practical and immersive and not heavy on the grammar or other things that typically turn us off (or bore us) when learning a language.

If you want to learn a new language for your next trip, this is a great way to do it.

  • Practical and efficient language learning
  • Great for beginner or intermediate
  • Focus on learning the language fast
  • Lots of learning options
  • Access on App or Website

Google Translate

The Google Translate app is one of the most helpful travel apps  when you are in a foreign country and have no clue how to speak the local language.

So, if you are talking to a local and need a translation, just allow Google Translate to listen in and tell you what they are saying. It can do the opposite as well, so you can get a two-way conversation going.

It provides a huge range of helpful services. Starting with the ability to literally translate people’s speech (over 100 languages) as well as scanning documents, menus and images.

You can download it on the app store either for your iPhone or Android phone.

Our Top Combo

As you can see, we have labeled our top picks of the best travel apps in the review and we suggest you download them. But if you only want a couple of them, here we are going to imagine that you can only download three, and tell you which combination of apps would be the most useful.

If you can only download three, we would suggest Kayak , Google Maps , and Trip Advisor . With these three apps, you can book everything you need for your vacation, find your way around on your holiday, and know all the fun and tasty things to do too. All the apps are global too, so you’ll be covered no matter where you are on the planet.

The combo covers you with almost all your travel needs from flights, hotels, car hire, public transport, and SatNav, to know of and be able to book every bar, restaurant, or activity around you.

Best weather apps for 2024

The best weather apps can deliver everything from the latest forecast to severe weather warnings

Best Weather Apps carrot weather

  • Carrot Weather
  • Weather Channel
  • Emergency: Alerts
  • Weather on the Way
  • Yahoo Weather
  • My Moon Phase
  • Accuweather
  • Weather Underground
  • How we pick

The best weather apps can make sure that you'll never get caught unaware by the machinations of mother nature. The last thing you need is to be caught by a sudden burst or rain or wind, which could easily ruin your day if you're not prepared.

Your phone may come with a weather app pre-installed, but you'll find a dedicated weather app should be a lot more capable. Or at the very least, offers some specialized feature that your stock app can't manage as effectively. Those include things like hyper-local forecasting, air quality stats and even ultra-specialized information you'll feel like you need a meteorology degree to understand. Plus extended weather forecasting and severe weather warnings as standard.

Your stock weather app might be ok for the time being, but it's always worth checking out alternative options. Plus, with climate change makes the weather increasingly hard to predict there's no better time to start paying closer attention to upcoming weather conditions. Here are your options for the best weather apps available right now.

The best weather apps you can download today

1. carrot weather (android, ios: free).

Best weather apps: Carrot Weather

Formerly an iOS exclusive you couldn't get on Android , Carrot Weather has long since bridged the platform divide; now the malevolent AI overlord Carrot can bring Android users the weather forecast along with a big side helping of snark and sarcasm. iOS users still enjoy features like being able to add a Carrot Weather widget to their lock screens as well as support for Live Activities in iOS 16.1 . But periodic updates add other features and bonuses for premium subscribers such as tide data or forecasts for up to five locations.

The app provides current, hourly, and 7-day forecasts leavened with sarcastic humor to cushion even the gloomiest outlook. Infographics put useful information in quick reach, with more detailed meteorological data available as you tap and swipe. You can even configure Carrot's sense of humor to be friendly, snarky, or murderous, with the ability to set how political the AI's jokes can get. (A recent update even lets you interact with the deranged AI through a series of "bonding activities.")

Carrot Weather offers different subscription tiers if you're not satisfied with the basics in the free app. The Premium tier starts at $4.99 a month and adds weather data sources, notifications, customization capabilities and widgets. There are also other tiers that unlock more capabilities or let you add multiple users to a Carrot Weather account.

Download Carrot Weather: Android , iOS

2. The Weather Channel (Android; iOS: Free)

best weather apps: The Weather Channel

The free, ad-supported version of the Weather Channel app is available on Android and iOS. The TWC app provides you with a wealth of meteorological data such as temperature, wind and visibility on an hourly or daily basis, with an extended 10-day forecast available. Interactive maps can display the latest Doppler radar data to show rainfall and weather events and severe weather alerts.

The Weather Channel also includes social sharing features for users to upload images, tweets, videos and photos. A Premium Pro tier costing $4.99/month removes ads and unlocks features like 15-minute forecasts and 72-hour radar info.

Download The Weather Channel: Android , iOS

3. Emergency: Alerts (Android; iOS)

best weather apps emergency alerts

It's an app you hope you never have to use, but when disaster strikes, you'll be glad you have Emergency: Alerts from the American Red Cross on your iPhone or Android device.

Because it keeps tabs on everything from hurricanes and floods to extreme heat and winter storms, Emergency: Alerts is good to keep installed on your phone at all times, and not just during hurricane season. Not only will Emergency monitor where you live, you can also enter cities and people that are important to you. To reflect the realities of climate change, the app's been retooled to include 40 different kinds of customized alerts and step-by-step guides to make sure you're prepared for potential weather-related emergencies.

Download Emergency: Alerts: Android , iOS

4. Clime: NOAA Weather Radar Live (Android, iOS: Free)

best weather apps: Clime

Now known as Clime, the app formerly known as NOAA Radar Pro continues to stand out from the crowd with real-time radar delivered straight to your phone that shows you changing weather conditions around you. iOS users can now take advantage of lock screen widgets from the app as well.

You'll get the standard 24-hour and 7-day forecasts with severe weather alerts included. But the reason to turn to Clime is for the satellite weather imagery that gives you the full picture of precipitation, temperature and other weather details.

A premium subscription unlocks the best features on Clime, including severe weather alerts for all saved locations, trackers for hurricanes, lightning and wildfires and a temperature map. Subscribers get rid of ads, too.

Download Clime: NOAA Weather Radar Live: Android , iOS

5. RadarScope (Android, iOS: $9.99)

best weather apps radarscope

Serious weather watchers will want to turn to RadarScope for detailed satellite views that include NEXRAD Level 3 and Super-Resolution radar data. With RadarScope installed, you can trck everything from tornados and severe thunderstorms to flash floods and marine warnings. The app also helps you track the paths of storms using data from the U.S,. National Weather Service.

RadarScope's makers say the imagery in this app uses native radar data rendered in its original radial format. That gives RadarScope a lot more detail than your typical weather apps.

In addition to the $9.99 download, RadarScope offers subscription tiers that offer more data. At Tier One (?$9.99/year), you get real-time animated lighting data and up to 30 frames of radar data, among other features. The $14.99/year Tier Two subscription brings 50-frame loops, SPC outlooks, special weather statements, hail size and even more advanced features.

Download RadarScope: Android , iOS

6. 1Weather (Android, iOS: Free)

1weather best weather apps

1Weather has all the features you'd expect from one of the best weather apps, including a 10-day forecast, live radar maps, severe weather warnings and more. But it also really takes advantage of widgets so that key weather day can be visible on your phone's home screen, whether you're using Android or iOS.

We also like 1Weather's minute-by-minute and hourly forecasts for temperature and rain. Because these forecasts extend for up to 48 hours, you can really use the app to plan ahead.

The app's a free download, and a $1.99/monthly subscription removes ads while enabling other features like 10 days of daily forecasts, an AQI card and more.

Download 1Weather: Android , iOS

7. WeatherBug (Android, iOS: Free)

best weather apps WeatherBug

If there's a developing weather situation you need to track, WeatherBug can help you out. The free download not only offers Doppler radar for North America, but can provide hurricane forecasts with the help of an improved hurricane tracker. Other features include Spark lightning alerts which use GPS data to alert you to how close lightning strikes are hitting. The app also features air quality info and pollen count data on top of the usual array of weather information.

Since it pulls data from weather services, satellites and tracking stations, WeatherBug can provide hyperlocal real-time conditions with current, hourly and 10-day forecasts. Pay 99 cents a month or $9.99 a year, and you can remove ads from the app; a free 24-hour trial lets you take the paid version out for a spin.

Note that the app is just listed as WeatherBug in the iOS App Store. (iOS users also can add WeatherBug widgets to their lock screen if they're running iOS 16.) In Google's Play Store, the app goes by the name Weather by WeatherBug.

Download WeatherBug: Android , iOS

8. IQAir AirVisual Air Quality Forecast (Android, iOS: Free)

best weather apps: IQAir AirVisual Air Quality Forecast

In a time of increasing pollution and severe wild fires, knowing the quality of the air you breathe is even more important than knowing if it's going to rain. We like the IQAir AirVisual Air Quality Forecast app for the eye-catching way it presents vital data about air quality wherever your are as well as around the world.

The app promises detailed info on pollutants and the air quality index for 10,000-plus locations in more than 100 countries. You have a choice of maps for viewing air quality — either a color-coded 2D map or a Google Earth-like 3D version. AirVisual also works in 7-day forecasts so that you can plan ahead on your outdoor activities to make sure you're going out in healthy air. And if you've got on of iQAir's air quality monitors in your home, you can sync them with the app to get a mobile reading on your indoor air quality, too.

Download IQAir AirVisual Air Quality Forecast: Android , iOS

9. Weather on the Way (iOS: Free)

best weather apps: Weather on the Way

The name of the app has fluctuated between Weather on the Way and just On the Way, but the basic principle remains the same regardless of what you call the app: weather can change dramatically on a road trip, so having that information on your phone can help your journey be a safe one.

Download Weather on the Way for free, and you get navigation features combined with severe weather alerts so you can know whether to expect rain, snow or other potentially hazardous conditions during your drive from Point A to Point B.

The free version works just fine, but Weather on the Way is an even better app once you commit to a Pro subscription ($4.99 a month or $24.99 annually). Pro users get more sophisticated features like alternate routes suggestions, road visibility and expanded data about conditions such as precipitation and wind speed. Pro users also get the ability to run Weather on the Way on CarPlay screens, bringing that information to their vehicles for safer road trips.

Download Weather On the Way: iOS

10. Windy (Android, iOS: Free)

best weather apps windy

Sometimes, the best way to understand the weather around you is to see it visualized on your phone screen. That's what Windy offers with detailed maps that let you watch the weather forecast unfold in front of you.

Windy excels at wind patterns, of course, but the app has 40-plus maps available showing temperature, humidity and more. You've also got satellite and Doppler info at your fingertips, plus a hurricane tracking feature that comes in handy during storm season.

Windy provides an impressive amount of features in its free app, but an $18.99 annual subscription provides you with more frequent forecast updates.

Download Windy: Android , iOS

11. Yahoo Weather (Android, iOS: Free)

best weather apps Yahoo Weather

The beautiful Yahoo Weather app boasts a gorgeous interface that is both informative and striking. The app displays images of your location with matching time of day and weather conditions, with the option to view detailed five-day forecasts, as well as interactive radar, heat and satellite maps. Updates have brought the Android app in line with the iOS design for a unified experience across both platforms.

Other apps provide more details and features, but Yahoo Weather's clean, concise presentation makes it an eminently user-friendly, everyday app, marred only by a fairly large advertisement as you swipe up to get to the detailed forecast.

Download Yahoo Weather: Android , iOS

12. My Moon Phase Pro (Android: $1.99; iOS: $2.99)

Best weather apps: My Moon Phase

If your interest in the best weather apps extends to the lunar calendar, then My Moon Phase Pro is a must-download. The app can help you pinpoint moonrise time as well as phases of the moon with an extensive calendar for tracking the cycles of the moon. You can even get notifications for when the moon is about to enter a particular phase.

Photographers will appreciate the clear interface of My Moon Phase, as it includes information about the golden hour and the blue hour — when the moon will be in a particular position of the sky best suited for taking specific photos. On the weather front, you can also see how cloudy it will be, so that you'll know if you have a clear view of the moon.

Download My Moon Phase: Android , iOS

13. AccuWeather (Android, iOS: Free)

Best Weather Apps: AccuWeather

AccuWeather is the app to turn to for hyperlocal forecasts that help you drill down to get the informations you need. The app's daily forecasts pack in everything from rain probability to air quality, wind, cloud coverage and UV index. Live radar lets you track storms, snow, ice and temperature changes.

Detail-oriented users will appreciate AccuWeather's MinuteCast and its minute-by-minute precipitation updates. A WinterCast feature gives you a heads up on snowfall probabilities, and an update has added an ice forecast map layer.

AccuWeather is a free download, but there are now multiple paid tiers. For 99 cents a month, you can remove ads; Premium Plus costs $1.99 per month and adds an alerts feature.

Download AccuWeather: Android , iOS

14. Flowx (Android: Free)

Best weather apps: Flowx

If geeking out over maps, graphs, and predictions is your thing, check out Flowx. Formerly known as Weatherbomb, the app provides users with a rich array of charts, forecasts, and weather maps presented in a scrolling animated forecast timeline. Users can have the app center on their location automatically, or set custom locations.

Flowx can display a variety of data overlays, such as precipitation, clouds and wind direction arrows, with data sourced from the NWS/NOAA and Environment Canada. The app is ad-supported, with an optional subscription that removes ads and rewards the developer.

Flowx remains an Android-only app, but the app's website appears to be soliciting feedback for a version that works with Apple's devices.

Download Flowx: Android

15. Weather Underground (Android, iOS: Free)

best weather apps: weather underground

Weather Underground relies upon a network of more than 30,000 personal and amateur weather stations to deliver truly local weather forecasts. Crowd reporting features allow you to verify reported forecasts and post their own sky and hazard reports. A detailed weather map allows you to apply a variety of information overlays. You can receive severe weather alerts, meteorological data in your notification tray and receive hourly forecasts up to 10 days.

Removing ads for a full year costs $1.99, while a monthly $3.99 subscription promises smart forecasts that can tell you when it's ideal to head outside based on your preferred weather conditions. A subscription also gets you 15 days of extended hourly forecasts.

  • Sgtkeebs I love android but I wish android apps were like iphone's. A lot of weather apps on iOS that are also available on Android are really well made on iOS. Whereas that same weather app on android is just a glorified poorly made skin of a website with a low review score. If Android apps had the same support as iOS I would love android even more. Reply
  • cuvtixo It's interesting looking at the old comments and comparing. 2021 comments suggests to me that MyRadar might not have made the list because of an active FUD campaign! lol ;) Presently on the website, there's a banner on the first page advertising "An Investment Opportunity (in MyRadar itself)" Maybe financial instability was a reason to keep it off the list? IDK. In contrast to 2021, My Carrot is definitely on Android now, it it acts like a mature app. Maybe Tom's was psychic in predicting future glory? lol again. Maybe as time goes by, these comments should expire, because certainly the app scene can change drastically in a couple of years. Good luck in your search for the best weather app! Reply
  • Toyer Great article, however I do not understand how out of the top 15, Weather Scope didn't make the cut. It is my favorite weather app with its awesomely smooth radar. Unlike all the ones on this article, it isn't clips pasted together like a flip book. It is a seamless radar. That and the ability to select a color scheme from a list of themes is one of my favorite features. Plus the notifications are great since they are AI produced. Just my 2 cents! Reply

The 22 Best Travel Apps

Going

August 8, 2023

We live in a mobile world saturated with apps, and while not all of them are actually worth investing your time (or money) into, there are quite a few that can actually help you save money and travel better. These travel apps do everything from tracking your travel expenses and unearthing deals on hotels and car rentals to helping you skip the line at immigration or find the cheapest gas to fuel up your car.

We’ve put together this list of our favorite travel apps designed for travelers who want to save money and travel smart.

TripIt: For organizing all your flight and travel info

The TripIt app gathers all the information about an itinerary, from flights to hotels to walking tours, in one convenient place. The app pulls all the relevant details from your confirmation emails—simply forward them to the [email protected] email address and TripIt does the rest. You can then edit any of the entries to include things like driving directions, access codes, or seat assignments.

The features list for the free version is impressive (you can sync plans with your calendar, see neighborhood safety scores, and share your itinerary with others, among other things), but a TripIt Pro subscription comes with some especially handy perks. Pro users also get real-time flight alerts, notice of potential fare refunds, help finding a better seat on the plane, alerts about security wait times, and the ability to upload up to 25 documents to your itinerary.

iOS Android

Flighty: For getting real-time alerts for flight changes

Flighty app

This user-friendly app (currently only on Apple iOS) helps you keep all the info about your flights in one simple dashboard. Enter in your confirmation codes, and it'll help you stay informed of things like delays and gate changes—often long before you'd hear about them from the airline. Plus it serves as a long of all your travels and gives you a Spotify-Wrapped-style annual report; the “Flighty Passport” shows where you’ve been and how far you’ve traveled—even details like how many hours you spent stuck in delays.

MiFlight: For updates on airport security wait times

MiFlight app.

There are few worse travel-related feelings than showing up to the airport 45 minutes before your flight to find an epically long security line. MiFlight lets you know how long the security line is at over 100 of the busiest US airports and an additional 100 airports globally. The app collects data from users and is pretty accurate within a few minutes, so you’ll know if you really have to the airport three hours before your flight or if you can wait a bit. ‍

Mobile Passport: For breezing through immigration if you don't have Global Entry

mobile passport app.

Don't have Global Entry? Mobile Passport allows US citizens and Canadian visitors to submit their passport and declaration forms to US Customs and Border Protection via the app rather than filling out traditional forms. From there, users can access expedited Mobile Passport lanes, which can be significantly shorter than the general queue. There's a paid version that saves your info or for you free, you can upload it upon landing. ‍

HotelTonight: For discounted rates on short notice

hotel tonight app.

For the flexible or last-minute traveler, HotelTonight offers incredible deals on hotel rooms for same-day bookings (as well as bookings in the near future—up 90 days out). The savings can be significant and every listing has photos and traveler reviews so you know exactly what you’re getting for the price. While they don't yet cover every destination around the world, HotelTonight is available in most major cities and tourist hotspots. One caveat: when you book you aren't guaranteed which room type you'll get, only that it'll fit two adults.

>> Read our guide to getting the cheapest hotel room every time.

Dayuse: For rooms when you don't need a whole day or overnight

dayuse app.

If you’ve got a long layover or need somewhere to crash for a few hours during the day, the Dayuse app lets you access a selection of hotels where you can book a room with up to 75% off an overnight stay. You pay by the hour (but don't let that conjure up unsavory images; these are nice rooms at legit hotels), and cancellation is free up until the last minute. So next time you've got some time to kill between flights and don't want to just hang in the airport, it's worth checking to see what's available for a quick nap or quiet space to freshen up.

XE Currency: For quick currency conversions

xe currency app.

How much is 10,000 Icelandic kronur in US dollars? If I exchange $50 US, how much should I get in Japanese yen? XE has you covered. This currency exchange app lets you calculate prices with the currency converter and monitor up to 10 different currencies of your choice. You’ll have a better understanding of what you’re spending and whether or not you’re getting ripped off in currency exchanges, plus you can use the app offline.

Splitwise: To tally up split expenses with friends

splitwise app.

With Splitwise you can share bills and IOUs with others, like household bills with roommates or group vacations with friends. If you’re traveling with others and sharing the cost, it’s an easy way to make sure everyone pays up fair and square without making things awkward. ‍

Trail Wallet: To keep track of your travel expenses

trail wallet app.

Overspending on your trip is easy to do. You might think you're only spend a bit each day, but if you're not careful, it adds up and soon you're coming home with more credit card debt than souvenirs. Trail Wallet makes it easy to track your expenses while on the road. Organize your expenses by trip or month, set a daily budget, add your expenses (you can scan your bills and receipts), and then review how you’re doing with the app’s insightful breakdowns.

Gasbuddy: For finding the cheapest gas prices nearby

GasBuddy app.

The incredibly handy Gasbuddy app lets drivers find the nearest gas station with the lowest-priced gas. Even using this app day-to-day could save you a few hundred dollars per year on gas if you drive frequently, and that’s a lot of vacation savings.

Turo: For cheap car rentals from locals

Turo app.

With the current rental car shortage, Turo has skyrocketed in popularity. Turo is a car-sharing marketplace where you can book a vehicle from a local host in the US, Canada, the UK, or Germany. It’s an affordable alternative to traditional car rental services, plus they also offer some unique wheels (like sports cars and campervans). ‍

BlaBlaCar: For carpooling long distances

blabla car.

Need a ride but don't want your own wheels? BlaBlaCar is a global long-distance carpooling service that lets you ride along with a driver who is going the same way and contribute to gas expenses. It’s great for places where bus service or train service is limited. It's basically a more modern, safer, and more convenient version of hitchhiking, and you might make a buddy in the process.

Rome2rio: For all the ways you can get from A to B

rome2rio.

With Rome2rio , simply input your starting point and end destination (whether it’s an address or a landmark) and you’ll instantly get results for all your best travel options—including plane, train, car, bus, or ferry—so you can compare time and costs for various options.

Trainline: For train schedules in Europe

Sometimes getting there is half the fun, but it helps to be well-informed. The Trainline app aggregates the travel details of more than 270 train and coach operators in 45 countries in Europe and the UK.

Users can search for and book electronic tickets, and Trainline sends alerts just like airfare sites do—so you’ll be able to track train and coach fares and click the buy button when they’re cheaper. Trainline also allows travelers to see train and coach journeys in real-time, so you’ll know about delays or other disruptions in advance.

Transit: For trains and buses in the US

transit app.

Transit is an incredibly comprehensive real-time transport app for finding the best route around a city. The design is beautiful and you can select which types of transit you want to see (only subway, for example) to remove even more clutter. You’ll even get upcoming departure times for metro lines near you, without ever having to tap a button. ‍

SpotHero: For finding parking lots and garages

spothero app.

Similar to GasBuddy but for parking lots, SpotHero makes it convenient to find and reserve parking in major US cities by giving you insider access to thousands of garages, lots, and valets, including at the airport. Plus you can save up to 50% off by booking in advance. ‍

Bounce Luggage Storage: For when you don't want to lug your bags around a city

IMG_8423.webp

There are some great things about staying in an apartment rental. The conundrum of what to do with your luggage before you can check in or after checkout time is not one of them. Enter Bounce Luggage Storage . The app connects you with thousands of spots around the world where you can store your luggage for just a few bucks. It's easy, your luggage is insured against any loss or damage, and it makes travel days a lot less cumbersome.

AllTrails: Finding and navigating on hikes

With detailed descriptions of more than 200,000 trails, it’s not surprising that AllTrails is a favorite among hikers and mountain bikers. Simply open the app wherever you go to find hiking trails that are nearby—including GPS driving directions to the trailhead. You can filter by accessibility, trail difficulty, and even by whether it’s a dog-friendly trail. AllTrails can be social, too, with options to share your excursions and follow other users within the app.

The app is free to use, but there is a pro version. Some of the additional benefits of AllTrails Pro are the ability to download offline maps, print topographical maps, and receive real-time information about things like air quality and weather.

WiFi Finder: For finding wifi anywhere

wifi finder app.

WiFi Finder gives you access to more than two million hotspots worldwide. All you have to do is type in the address—whether it’s a cafe, airport, restaurant, etc.—and the app provides the rest, when available (it’ll even give you the login info if the network is protected).    ‍

Flush: For finding a toilet when you really need one

As you might have guessed, the Flush app is all about toilets—specifically finding public toilets when you’re out and about. The app indexes more than 200,000 public lavs all over the world, and you can filter by things like usage fees and disabled access.

When you open the app, you’ll see public toilets near you. Then, if you need them, Flush provides directions for getting there. You can even rate the loo to help other app users and add a new public toilet to the system.

PackPoint: For a complete packing list based on your trip

packpoint app.

PackPoint is a packing app and packing list builder that gives you solid recommendations on what you need to pack based on your length of travel, your destination, and your planned activities. You may need to tweak the list a little, but it’s a great starting point to make sure you have what you need but aren’t overpacking—and can thus save on checked bag fees. ‍

iOS Android ‍

Grab: For just about everything in Southeast Asia

Grab calls itself “The Everyday Everything App,” providing a gateway for everything from food deliveries to car rides to financial services to people in eight Southeast Asian countries.

We’re accustomed to using apps for things like meal and grocery deliveries (GrabFood and GrabMart, respectively), as well as getting from place to place (Grab offers transportation via 4-wheel, 3-wheel, or 2-wheel options). Grab goes beyond those standards with financial services like auto insurance, point-of-sale systems for shops, investment tools, and financial planning.

The best weather apps for iPhone and iPad

Weather apps on iPhoen and iPad

best travel alerts app ios

Largely considered an essential app, weather apps are probably among the most-used basic apps on your iOS device. The good ones will give you a detailed forecast of the weather, as well as important data like UV index, air quality, and severe weather alerts.

There are a variety of weather apps available on the App Store , from basic and free options to much more detailed platforms aimed at meteorologists. Here are the best weather apps for iPhone and iPad .

Dark Sky is one of the most popular weather apps for a reason. It features precise weather reports with much more accurate predictions than you might get with other weather apps.

Dark Sky on iOS

However, Dark Sky has been purchased by Apple, and the Cupertino company plans to sunset the app by the end of 2022. You can continue to use it until then, or you can find an alternative — including Apple's own Weather app, which has been updated with some of Dark Sky's features.

You can download Dark Sky from the App Store here .

Apple Weather

The stock Weather app on iOS has long felt like an afterthought. It did the job, but was very basic. In iOS 15 and later, however, Apple has taken steps to revamp the Weather app and make it a serious contender.

The stock iOS weather app

Weather in iOS 15 features a clean and minimal design, as well as a new map for geographic weather. There's also new in-app sections for the UV index, temperature, air quality, and more. The best part about Weather is its deep integration with iOS — and the fact that you likely already have it on your device.

You like already have Weather on your phone, but its App Store listing is here .

Weather Underground

Weather Underground is an app that leverages weather data from a huge network of 30,000 amateur and personal weather stations, allowing users to get a detailed and granular look at the conditions in their area.

Weather Underground

Additionally, the app has a level of crowd-sourcing not seen in other weather apps, allowing users to confirm weather reports or post their own. Because of that, it may provide some of the most accurate weather reports in a simple and customizable user interface.

You can download Weather Underground from the App Store here .

Carrot Weather

If you like a dose of humor with your weather reports, Carrot Weather is an award-winning app that can deliver the forecast with a healthy amount of sarcastic zingers. Users can even customize the level and type of humor in Carrot Weather.

Carrot Weather

The app pulls data from Dark Sky, meaning you'll get accurate weather reports with up-to-the-minute forecasts. There are options for iOS widgets and Apple Watch companion apps. You can also opt for premium features with its subscription tiers.

You can download the Carrot Weather app from the App Store here

The Weather Channel

If you're looking for a simple weather app provided by one of the most reputable weather companies in the U.S., take a look at The Weather Channel app. It's a solid solution that's free and ad-supported.

The Weather Channel

The Weather Channel app features 15-minute rain forecasts, snow intensity data, and editorial weather content and live breaking news alerts for extreme weather events. If you don't like ads, you can also opt for a premium subscription that features advanced radar and additional features.

You can download The Weather Channel app from the App Store here .

Meteorologists or weather enthusiasts won't find a more feature-rich and powerful weather app on the App Store than RadarScope. The app features Nexrad Level 3 data sourced from weather stations in the U.S., Guam, and Puerto Rico.

RadarScope

In addition to the highly accurate data rendering, RadarScope also features severe weather alerts and a suite of options for fine-tuning your meteorological reports. Most people won't need a weather app as detailed as this, but those that do will be glad that it does.

You can download RadarScope from the App Store here .

The best weather apps for iPhone in 2023: AccuWeather, Carrot, and more

Jesse Hollington

Families used to tune in to the friendly local meteorologist to find out whether they’d be able to weather the weather that week, but considering how many of us use smartphones these days, mobile apps have become one of the best ways to get the latest forecast any time you need it. Whether you’re planning a vacation, checking the weather on your road trip, or even considering evacuation in light of hurricane news, you can find a weather app to suit nearly any taste or purpose.

Don’t just head to the App Store and start downloading, though. Not all weather apps are accurate , and it’s good to have an app that you can rely on in a crisis. That’s why we did some digging to find the best, most accurate weather apps available for the iPhone — no matter if you have an iPhone 14 , iPhone 14 Pro , or a much older model. Not an Apple user? Check out the best weather apps for Android . Looking to focus on hurricane warning apps? Then check out our list of the best hurricane-tracking apps for an even deeper dive into the options that are available.

Apple Weather

Apple has offered its own built-in weather app since the very first iPhone debuted in 2007 . For years, Apple Weather has been a reliable but basic app. It was always handy for getting the temperature and a casual forecast, but folks looking for more detailed info were forced to turn to a third-party app.

While Apple added some nice polish to its Weather app in later iOS versions, it really upped its game a couple of years ago when it acquired Dark Sky , one of the most popular weather apps on the App Store. Suddenly, the built-in Weather app became much more accurate and began incorporating some of Dark Sky’s best features, such as next-hour precipitation forecasts and severe weather alerts. By the time iOS 15 was released in 2021, Apple Weather had also added full-screen weather maps showing expected precipitation, air quality, and temperature, with next-hour rain visualizations in most of the U.S., U.K., and parts of Canada.

Apple topped that all off with a stunning new design with animated backgrounds that show realistic sun and cloud coverage for your selected location, plus some nifty animations for rain and snow. Apple Weather is now one of the most attractive, useful, and accurate weather apps available, pulling weather data from a wide variety of sources . If its humble beginnings have left you dismissive of it, it’s definitely worth another look.

The Weather Channel

How could The Weather Channel’s app not make our list? It’s free, comprehensive, and has just about everything you need to keep an eye on the sky. The app tracks storms and gives you real-time updates so you can plan for your safety. It automatically changes based on your current location and provides the current weather and hourly weather up to two days in advance. It can also handle forecasts up to 15 days in advance, giving you plenty of time to plan your travels. Another safety feature notifies you of severe weather to minimize the risk of being stuck in a crisis.

You’ll feel secure knowing the app provides information about COVID cases in your area and lets you monitor flu risk in your surroundings. Those who suffer from allergies will find the app useful, too, as will outdoor enthusiasts, as the app tells you whether the weather is right for a variety of outdoor activities, which change based on the season. You can also use it to tap into exclusive web content and video recorded directly from The Weather Channel’s TV broadcasts, and you can get additional features at $5 a month or $30 a year.

Download The Weather Channel

AccuWeather

AccuWeather gets high marks from us not only for its simplicity but also for being so comprehensive. While the app is no-frills, just about any kind of weather information you might need is at your fingertips with AccuWeather.  It tracks hurricanes, storms, snow, and pretty much anything you might want to keep an eye on. You can look up information regarding both sunrise and sunset, in addition to allergy conditions, and there are news and video clips about the current weather cycle. You can also send in your own weather reports and videos if you feel like contributing, and AccuWeather may feature your videos in its news reports.

The app promises long-term forecasts, going as far as 45 days ahead, so you can plan any trips quite in advance. You can also track the local air quality index if you’re concerned about pollution. Beyond the free features, you can pay $9 per year for AccuWeather Premium to remove ads from the app. Alternatively, you can pay $20/year for Premium+ to get hyperlocal AccuWeather Alerts, in addition to helpful iOS 16 lock screen widgets .

Carrot Weather

For folks who like a little bit of personality with their forecast, there’s the popular Carrot Weather. Each day’s weather is accompanied by commentary from the Carrot Weather bot, ranging from polite, professional, and whimsical to downright homicidal.

There’s more to this app than just its snarky attitude, though. Carrot Weather provides highly accurate weather information and forecasts from a variety of sources, and unlike most other weather apps, you can choose which ones to use. Some of these require a subscription since weather data doesn’t come cheap, and Carrot’s developer needs to pay for it somehow, but it’s still quite a list. It even includes Apple Weather, so you can get advanced features like next-hour precipitation warnings and 10-day forecasts. Subscribers to the highest Premium Ultra tier will even get lightning strike and storm cell notifications, along with the ability to see and choose individual U.S. radar stations on the weather maps.

Carrot also offers a unique Time Travel feature that lets you take a look back in history to see what the weather was like on a different day. What’s interesting is that this is a feature that’s also powered by Apple Weather — likely inherited from Dark Sky — yet it’s not available in Apple’s own Weather app. Lastly, Carrot Weather also offers a huge degree of customizability and themes and includes one of the best weather apps available for the Apple Watch.

Download Carrot Weather

(Not Boring) Weather

What Carrot Weather offers in personality, Not Boring Weather offers in design. A minimalist user interface belies just how much is hidden behind the scenes. Rather than the relatively static interface that most weather apps offer, Not Boring Weather uses 3D fonts, animation, and sounds inspired by video games to present the day’s weather in a whole new way. You’ll get to hear the rain and feel the thunder as you scrub through the day’s forecast, or just swipe to play with the current weather. There’s even a built-in Cloudburst game to add an extra bit of whimsy.

Don’t let the simplistic design fool you, though. Not Boring Weather pulls the same weather data as every other app to create a realistic weather simulation. Cloud coverage, wind speed, precipitation, and visibility are all factored in, and a simple tap will let you see the details by number. It’s an accurate look at the weather presented in a much more creative way.

Download (Not Boring) Weather

Our next app doesn’t tell you the temperature, nor will it provide you with a forecast. In fact, RadarScope is pretty one-dimensional — it shows you the radar, and that’s it. Nonetheless, it excels at this one and only function. This is one of the most useful apps you can use if you’re interested in keeping an eye on storms. The highly-accurate radar images refresh every two to 10 minutes, with storm warnings on top for added convenience. You also have access to a wealth of other radar statistics, such as velocity, precipitation estimates, and nearly a dozen other metrics, most of which you can’t find in standard weather apps.

RadarScope doesn’t come cheap; it’s an up-front $10 purchase, and you’ll likely want to subscribe to at least RadarScope Pro Tier 1 if you want to get any serious use from it. This $10 per year subscription level gets you lightning and dual-pane radar data, plus the ability to loop up to 30 frames, giving you quick access to more than two hours of data. Tier One subscribers also have access to a data interrogation tool to quickly determine data values for specific radar pixels, plus an optional multi-pane mode for comparing up to four radar maps simultaneously.

A $15 per month Tier 2 subscription offers all the features of the first tier along with 50-frame loops, advanced tools like SPC outlooks, mesoscale discussions, local storm reports, hail size and probability contours, and azimuthal shear contours in the U.S., a 30-day archive of all radar products, and the ability to use subscription features across multiple platforms. It’s geeky stuff, but it’s not a bad deal if you’re looking for that kind of data.

Download RadarScope

This beautifully crafted weather app manages to display an enormous amount of data without feeling too cluttered or technical. You get a storm tracker, tornado warnings, and temperature changes so you can stay ahead of any imminent weather problems. There’s an hourly forecast for the next 48 hours, an extended 10-day forecast, and even a 12-week forecast for really planning ahead. It covers everything from wind speed and direction to barometric pressure and allows you to simultaneously track the weather at up to 12 different locations.

If you just want a simple, at-a-glance forecast, 1Weather has you covered — but you can also dig into radar maps, graphs, moon phases, and a whole lot more. This app also offers informative videos, marine and aviation forecasts, and customizable weather alerts. There’s even a handy widget to check the weather from your home screen.

1Weather might take the cake as the best free weather app out there. As a free weather app, 1Weather is tough to beat. It does have ads, but they’re not too intrusive, and you can always pay $2 for the Pro version and get rid of them. Regardless of the ads, you’ll get all the pertinent weather information you need with 1Weather.

What the Forecast?!!

There’s no better way to break the bad news of a rainy, cold day than with a little comic relief, which is an entertaining feature of the weather app What the Forecast?!!. T his 2018 People’s Choice Webby Award-winning app offers strong forecasting with daily forecasts for up to 10 days, hourly forecasts for 48 hours, air quality, the current moon phase, NOAA weather alerts, and more.

But the real headline feature is the tongue-in-cheek phrases that describe the current weather conditions. The app has over 12,607 phrases to describe the weather, air quality, and alerts, but you can also censor the app slightly by eliminating curse words and profane language. Not only is it amusing, but it is also educational, enlightening any ignorance you may have on weather vocabulary. WTF?!! has a glossary explaining the weather terms used, and you can also share the weather reports on your social media accounts to add a social component to your typical weather app experience.
