Known for being incredibly fashionable and well-dressed, especially in cities like Milan or Florence or Rome , finding the right clothes to wear and the best shoes for Italy is paramount if you want to make sure that your feet are happy and you don’t stand out like a sore thumb while travelling through Italy.

There is no doubt that Italy is a well-dressed nation, however, if you want to ensure your comfort as you inevitably walk for several kilometres each day without sacrificing style or calling attention to yourself as an underdressed tourist, it is not too difficult to do this.

There is so much footwear available these days that are well-made, durable and comfortable enough to wear for hours of walking around Italy without being ugly or unstylish.

Shoes for Italy Comparison

What to look for in italy travel shoes.

Depending on where you plan to travel in Italy, your footwear needs are likely going to vary. No matter where and when you visit Italy, however, you’re going to need to make sure that your shoes are comfortable enough to walk long distances and stylish enough to blend in with the well-dressed locals and avoid looking like a tourist.

If you’re curious about what to look for, I would always say that simple is better. For instance, plan to go for a classic design in black or brown.

If you can find a shoe that can pair with any sort of outfit, can be dressed up or down, and will last you for years to come and well past when you’ve returned from your unforgettable Italy trip, then you’re on the right track.

You also are going to want to make sure that the shoe is durable and well-made and has good support for your feet.

As I’m sure you’re aware, the best way to explore most of Italy is on foot and you will likely be walking quite a bit while you’re wandering through the backstreets of Venice , Bologna or strolling through the towns on the Amalfi Coast .

If you want to make sure that your trip is as enjoyable as it possibly can be, then you are absolutely going to want to make sure your shoes are comfortable.

Durability is another key component to finding the best shoes for Italy, especially when you factor in just how much you will likely be walking and how many uneven, cobbled streets you will be contending with.

Make sure that you keep an eye out for a solid shoe that can withstand more than usual wear and tear because you’re going to need it.

Depending on the season that you’re travelling in, you may want to bring either boots or sandals. For women travelling to Italy in between the months of October through April, a nice pair of boots might be a good option.

Weather can be more chilly and ankle boots especially are very versatile and can be dressed up or dressed down depending on the situation.

If you’re visiting in the warmer months of the year, you may want to look into bringing a pair of sturdy walking sandals so that you can look stylish while staying cool in the high heat that some areas of the country experiences.

One more thing that I cannot stress enough is to please avoid wearing athletic shoes when visiting Italian cities.

This is a surefire way to label yourself as a tourist and therefore as a target to scammers and pickpockets. Looking like a local in Italy isn’t just a vanity thing, it is an essential element to avoid any petty theft which, unfortunately, can be common in some major cities.

Italians will only wear athletic shoes or sneakers when they are doing athletic activities so if you want to blend in as much as possible, save the running shoes for when you actually plan on running.

All of this advice considered, it really is important that you just find a shoe that you find comfortable and that is durable enough to withstand a fair amount of wear and tear.

Just because Italians are well dressed and fashionable doesn’t mean that you have to spend your life savings on a pair of shoes that you’re only going to wear on this one trip in order to fit in.

If you follow the advice in this article, you will find a number of shoes that are classic in style and will hopefully last you for many years (and trips to Italy) to come!

Birkenstock Yara – Best Sandals

If you’re travelling in the summer months or in the south of Italy, it is likely that you’re also going to want a solid pair of sandals to pack with you. This is my favourite style for an Italy trip:

When looking for sandals for Italy, you absolutely cannot go wrong with Birkenstocks and the Birkenstock Yara (also available on Zappos here ) is a stylish design that is perfect for your trip to Italy.

Boasting everything that comes to mind when thinking of the Birkenstock brand, the Yara sandal is stylish and durable made and about as comfortable of a shoe that you could ever find.

Equipped with the incredibly supportive cork footbed that conforms to your foot, you can wear these sandals for hours at a time and feel as if you’re shuffling around in your favourite slippers.

The slim, strappy design of the Birkenstock Yara is ideal for Italy as they can be dressed up for the evening along with wearing them all during the day. They also come in a range of colours to suit any style and personality.

Best Men’s Shoes for Italy

For men in Italy, I would recommend getting a stylish and comfortable sneaker-type shoe that can be worn during the day and also dressed up slightly for more casual nighttime venues.

I would also suggest bringing a pair of boots that can be worn in the winter months and also dressed up under a nice pair of dark jeans or chinos when going out in the evening.

Ecco Byway Tred – Best Walking Shoes

If you can’t tell by now, I am a fan of Ecco brand shoes and for men looking for the best walking shoes for Italy, you cannot go wrong with the Ecco Byway Tred shoes. These leather sneakers are both comfortable, supportive and stylish and can be worn for hours on end without making your feet hurt.

The Ecco Byway Tred shoes are made from a breathable material and a stylish leather that comes in both a dark grey and brown colour.

These shoes are great for traversing Italian cities and can be easily dressed up or down depending on the circumstances.

ECCO Men's Byway Tred Gore-TEX Sneaker, Black Oil Nubuck, 13-13.5

Timberland Earthkeeper – Best Boots

For a great and long-lasting pair of men’s boots for Italy, you absolutely cannot go wrong with the Timberland Earthkeeper ( also available from Zappos here ).

Boasting both a stylish and classic design and maximising comfort, you can wear these boots for countless hours and traverse from one side of Rome to the other without your feet aching by the end of the day.

Birkenstock Milano – Best Sandals

I am a huge fan of Birkenstock sandals and continue to sing my praises for the German footwear when it comes to the Birkenstock Milano (also available on Zappos here )– which, I believe, is the ideal sandal for men in Italy.

Equipped with the same technology as all Birkenstock sandals, the extremely comfortable footbed of the Milano will mold itself around your foot creating a custom fit and ensuring the utmost comfort — ideal for traipsing all around the streets of Italy.

It also comes in a range of different colours and the durable make of the sandal will ensure that you can keep wearing it you countless years to come.

Thanks for the informative article.

I’m headed to Bari and Sicily in late-Sept to mid-Oct. In terms of footwear, I’m thinking of white mesh fabric sneakers, a pair of beige sandals by Ecco and black ankle boots. Would these work? And what kind of light jacket should I be bringing?

Appreciate your reply.

I think those shoes sound great! It will still be very warm that time of year in Southern Italy, so something simple like a light cardigan or a denim jacket should work great 🙂

Hello, Going to Italy Oct 30th to Nov 10th. I am a big fan of fitflop sandals. Would they be ok to bring during the time I am going.

Hi Maryann – I don’t know where in Italy you’re planning on visiting, but generally it will be far too cold to wear any kind of sandals in November.

Finding the best walking shoes for travel can be tough. You want something comfortable enough to get you through a full day of wandering around, but not so comfortable that it screams “I'm a tourist!” And since nobody wants to tote around a bag (checked or otherwise) filled with shoes, the ones that do make the packing list cut need to be versatile enough to wear with multiple outfits.

Knowing that a bad pair of shoes can ruin an otherwise lovely travel day, we asked Condé Nast Traveler writers and editors (as well as shopping writers from other Condé Nast titles) to share their tried-and-true kicks, so you don't have to take a gamble on whether they'll actually be comfortable or not. Whether you're looking for sneakers , boots , flats , or sandals , we have recommendations for you. Below, more than 30 of our favorite high-quality, easy-to-pack walking shoes for travel—all cushy, supportive, and versatile—that will take you just about anywhere. Susie Plotkin, who works on Condé Nast's global email team, calls these platform boots “the perfect shoe.” She's had them for about three years, and has taken them everywhere. “My boyfriend lives in Switzerland, and they’re the shoe I wear to sightsee around Zurich. I've spent 12 hours walking around Venice in them, and regularly stomp all around Brooklyn in them. They’re a little heavy but super comfortable and can slide on and off so easily.”

A cold-weather favorite of senior commerce editor Madison Flager , these Blundstone boots required no break-in time, and are a great all-purpose boot for fall or winter trips. The pull tabs make them easy to get back on, the shock absorption keeps your feet feeling good even after a few hours on the move, and the double stitching, durable leather, and tough outsole mean you won't be replacing them a few trips later.

Former Traveler editor Meredith Carey wears these waterproof Blondo boots almost all winter long, and brings them along on any fall and winter trips. “They look and feel like leather but I can wear them in snow and rain—I don't have to worry about my shoes surviving when I'm tromping around day-to-day in New York or a new city,” she says. They come in a host of color options, from black to brown leather to snakeskin.

Senior editor Megan Spurrell is a fan of Vagabond's lug sole boots, and recommends a style with a wider toe for maximum comfort on long days of walking. Best for city trips, these Chelsea boots are on the bulkier side, so wear them through security to cut down on suitcase weight.

Spurrell has waxed poetic about Frye's Melissa Chelsea boots before: They're her go-to for any city trip. They look good with jeans, leggings , or dresses, pack down well, and over time, have become as comfortable as sneakers. Plus, they last for years and are sturdy enough to navigate cobblestone streets. What more could you want?

New Balance sneakers have made a major comeback. This style of the cool dad shoes are frequently worn by associate commerce editor Meaghan Kenny , who says this: “These sneakers are just as comfortable as they are cool. I’ve had them for about two years now and they’ve come with me on a weekend trip spent walking around Boston , to the airport for a few flights, and on my very long commutes to the office. They’re a perfect balance of sporty and stylish—they don’t hurt my feet after hours of walking and the neutral shade always matches a variety of outfits in my carry-on. Besides my classic white sneakers , these are my most worn shoe. Bonus: I’m not very cautious about getting my sneakers dirty, but these have somehow stayed clean and in excellent condition—so don’t worry too much about its light hue.”

Hop on the New York City subway and you're bound to see a pair of Vejas or two on your fellow passengers' feet. Global digital director Arati Menon was first drawn to Veja because of the sleek, minimalist design and the company’s commitment to responsible sourcing. She landed on the Campo because of its chunkier sole—both an aesthetic preference and a practical one, as it offers more support. “The biggest criticism with Vejas are that they’re stiff when you first buy them, and this is somewhat true—but I’m generally cautious not to overuse new shoes for the first few times, breaking into them little by little,” she says, noting that the Campo is more comfortable out of the box than other Veja styles. “I’ve taken my Campos on rugged national park adventures and European city breaks, and use them as workwear staples. I just retired mine after years of use, but I’m sure I’ll buy another at some point.” To clean, Menon recommends a combination of mild dishwashing liquid on a damp cloth and a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser .

The Adonis is a newer style for Naot—a podiatrist-approved footwear brand —that dropped earlier this year. The sock-style slip-on is made with a removable cork and latex footbed that promises all-day comfort. Flager is a fan of the easy-to-match white and light pink style, and recommends them for city trips. (Pro tip: Bombas's cushioned no-show socks are just the right size to wear underneath.)

There's a reason why the Adidas Stan Smith has evolved from a tennis shoe to a streetwear classic (and can be found on multiple Traveler editors' shoe racks): They're too comfortable to ever want to take off. If you're going on a short trip and only have room for one pair of shoes, wear these—they can handle anything from a day of sightseeing to an impromptu hike, are easy to slide on and off at airport security, and will make you look chic, without sacrificing an ounce of comfort.

Allbirds are a great pick for most every vacation thanks to their versatility and true all-day comfort. These Tree Runners come highly recommended by contributor Lauren Dana Ellman and are available in a half dozen colorways and just as many limited-edition hues. Like all of the brand's shoes, they are machine washable, which means lighter colors are easy to keep looking new.

Recommended by Glamour and Teen Vogue commerce director Brie Schwartz , this playful spin on the classic Converse low-top will add a bit of fun to your travel day. The sneakers are relatively lightweight thanks to the canvas upper, and the vulcanized rubber sole helps with traction.

Look down in an exercise class or marathon and you're bound to see, at minimum, a few pairs of Hokas around you. Glamour 's senior commerce editor, Jenifer Calle , is partial to the brand's Kawana style: “I wore these sneakers when I was in San Antonio last year and they were a lifesaver for my feet,” Calle says. “I did a lot of walking during this trip and was not prepared for the Texas heat. (At one point my partner and I had to step into an H&M to cool off.) Luckily, my sneaks were very bouncy and breathable, so my feet never felt tired or sweaty.”

For those who live in Lululemon athleticwear, the brand's running shoes are a natural extension to your travel wardrobe. Traveler contributor and runner Rachel Chang tested these out when they launched in 2022, and was immediately impressed by the fit (designed specifically for a woman's foot), breathability, and smart features, like a reflective backing.

Image may contain: Clothing, Shoe, Footwear, Apparel, Running Shoe, and Sneaker

Editorial assistant Charlie Hobbs wears these shoes everywhere: “To the gym, to the park, to the rave—I sometimes have to remind myself that I own other shoes. You don't have to tie them, just pull a cord [to secure them]. They are so comfortable and easy.”

Image may contain: Clothing, Shoe, Footwear, Apparel, and Running Shoe

Former Traveler editor Scott Bay is a fan of this Arc'teryx hiker : “To me, it's technical enough to tackle any moderate hike, while being super comfortable all day, and I have been known to wear them to nice restaurants or shows.” Other perks: They last forever and you can throw them in the wash when they're in need of a polish.

Recommended by Calle, these On sneakers boast the brand's biggest layer of CloudTec ever for top-tier cushioning and energy return, as well as reduced muscle fatigue. “I’m not a runner by any means but I like to do a steady three-mile jog around Liberty State Park when the mood strikes,” Calle says. “I’ve been using old Nike sneakers for the last few years, but gave On shoes a try last year, and let me tell you, I didn’t know my feet could feel so much relief while running. I love that the rocker bottoms feel like they give me an extra push during my jog. I’m never going back to regular minimalist sneakers.”

Allbirds Tree Dashers

Allbirds' sneakers are known for being comfortable, but the Tree Dashers—the brand's first pair made specifically for runners—ups the ante. The thick sole will cushion your feet on the longest of days spent exploring, and if you are someone who jogs on vacation, you can pack one less pair of shoes to do so.

best travel shoes italy

Known as the most popular hiking shoe in the world—more than 25 million pairs have been sold since it debuted 15 years ago—Flager was excited to put the new third generation model of the Merrell Moab to the test. “I brought them along on a recent trip to Iceland, which involved some moderate hikes and city walks on wet roads; the shoe held up nicely on both occasions. The shoes have great traction, fit comfortably, and didn't take up tons of room in my carry-on—I can see why they're so beloved.” Jake Smith , a commerce writer for Glamour , is a big fan of the shoe, too: “I've worn them for three years, and while they're nice for hiking, I really love them as walking shoes,” he says.

best travel shoes italy

Emma McDonald, who works on the digital marketing team for Condé Nast, recommends these recovery shoes from Kane. “I have had them for about six months and use them at my standing desk all day long, and while running errands.” The cushiony shoe is made out of Brazilian sugarcane, with raised footbed nodes that are designed to activate blood flow in key pressure points on the sole of your foot.

best travel shoes italy

Malia Griggs , Glamour 's commerce editor, is a big fan of these SeaeVees clogs. “I thought they’d just be rain boots , but I end up wearing them all the time because they’re so easy to slip on, are comfy, and perfect for any sort of drizzly days when I’m out and about in the city,” she says. “This summer, I spent a week in the North Carolina mountains and brought them with me since they’re good plane shoes (easy on and off at security!) and also durable and waterproof enough for walks on little trails. I appreciate that they have enough of a backing to not slide all the way off when I’m walking.”

best travel shoes italy

Another favorite of Schwartz, these leather lug loafers are fairly light at just half a pound each, with a comfortably low heel height of 1.1 inches. Basic black goes with everything, but for a pop of color, order them in red or emerald green.

best travel shoes italy

These colorful Sabah slip-ons come highly recommended by articles director Lale Arikoglu , who calls them “a permanent fixture on my packing list.” They come in dozens of colors, in either a butter soft leather or suede, and are hand stitched by one of the 10 shoemakers who comprise the Sabah Workshop in Gaziantep. “The more I wear them, the better they fit, molding to my feet like a glove—almost as if they were designed just for me,” she says.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Shoe, Footwear, and High Heel

This black and white Cole Hahn shoe toes the line between loafer and sneaker perfectly—it's nice enough to wear into the office after hopping off a plane, but casual (and comfortable) enough to wear during a day of sightseeing. If you own enough basic black, you can get the pair with an off-white, gold, or silver leather top, too. Either way, the shoe is made for long days: There's traction on the bottom to keep you from slipping on smooth museum floors, footbeds meant to mold to your feet, and cushioned padding on the heel to prevent rubbing.

best travel shoes italy

Kenny has slipped on these loafers to head to work, go out to dinner—in general, any situation where she wants to look polished but doesn't necessarily want to put on a heel. Made with a soft, merino wool upper, they come in onyx black, teak herringbone, or ivory, shown above, and have a chunky 1.5-inch sole. Best of all, they are fully machine washable.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Footwear, and Sandal

Wearing sandals for an extended period of time can be tricky, but former Traveler editor Sarah Ratner swears by good ol' fashioned Birks, with their suede-covered cork-latex footbed that practically molds to your feet over time. The Arizona slides come in every color under the sun and can be purchased in regular or narrow sizes to better fit your feet. Plus, they're easy to match with almost any outfit.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Footwear, and Sandal

Tevas are the kind of shoe that once you own a pair, you're a fan for life. They'll come in handy on so many occasions—light hikes through Arizona (find more intense hiking shoes here ), sightseeing through dusty roads in Israel, swimming in rocky reservoirs in Austin . The trail sandals, which Flager recommends, have a bit more arch support than the classic style, meaning they'll be even more comfortable both in cities and on trails.

Image may contain: Clothing, Footwear, Sandal, and Apparel

A second Birkenstock option with a ringing endorsement: The Arizona Big Buckle style. “I am very loyal to my Birkenstocks,” says Arikoglu. “I walked 10 miles in one day in Barcelona in them and they never rubbed.”

best travel shoes italy

Another favorite of Kenny's, these Rothy's slides are a welcome update to some of the brand's previous iterations of sandals, which, while cute, offered little when it came to support. “When I put these new slides on from Rothy’s, I immediately knew they will be my go-to summer sandal for beach excursions and vacation days that require a decent amount of walking while also looking put together,” Kenny says. “A durable yet comfortable sandal is always tricky to find, but these have a pretty thick sole and give a lot more support than the flat pair of flip flops I’m always tempted to pack. I went for the neutral beige color that I know will match any midi dress or linen pants I pack this summer.”

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Footwear, Sandal, Accessories, Accessory, and Belt

Another one of Spurrell's go-to's , these Tevas are slightly less grippy than the Trail sandals, but are still plenty comfortable for all-day wear. Spurrell has worn them on bike rides, long walks, beach days, and out to dinner in New York—proof of their range, and value on your packing list.

Birdies Starling flat

It can be nice to have a good pair of flats tucked away in your suitcase for a fancy dinner or evening stroll after a long day in sneakers, especially given how easy they are to pack. We like Birdies' The Starling flats, meant to be a modern take on the classic smoking slipper. They're built to last, and to keep your feet comfortable: Inside, there's seven-layer cushioned footbed with elevated arch support, plus a little extra cushion in the heel to prevent it from rubbing. Order them in suede, faux fur, or velvet fabrics.

best travel shoes italy

While Rothy's makes a classic ballet flat , too, we love the more sophisticated look of the Point Flat. Available in more than a dozen colors from lollipop red to boysenberry and dark emerald, there's a hue for every kind of traveler and outfit. All of Rothy's shoes are made out of recycled plastic, and cut using the same technology as Suav, meaning there's less waste throughout production. The shoes were recently redesigned to be even more comfortable thanks to a cushier insole and more spacious toebox.

An Italian Mama's Guide to Italy

The best shoes for Italy: how to pick + best buys

Our selection of the best shoes for Italy travel to be comfortable, stylish and appropriate in all situations.

One of the hardest decisions when it comes to packing for Italy is about what shoes to bring.

Picking comfortable travel shoes is never easy, but finding great travel shoes for Italy adds extra stress as the demands placed on the perfect shoe for Italy travel seem endless.

If you were to believe the web, you’d think the best shoes for Italy are comfortable, stylish, cool for summer, warm for winter, not too sporty, not too dressy and always appropriate no matter what.

Thankfully, the worries I see associated with what shoes to pack for Italy are vastly unfounded.

All you need for Italy is shoes you can walk in, no one will give any thought to what you are wearing!

That said, if you are curious about the style of shoes local wear and you have occasions where you may want to ‘fit it’, some guidelines about what shoes to pack for an Italy trip can come in handy.

No matter your plans for Italy, you know you will be walking a lot, so you will need shoes that can support you while sightseeing.

You also probably want to look pretty and appropriate for aperitivo and nicer dinners out.

Last but not least, you need to consider the weather, which may throw some curveballs when it comes to packing essentials.

If you are stressing out about what shoes to pack for Italy, this guide is for you!

After many years living in Italy and many trips up and down the Italian boot, I know very well what shoes work for Italy and what shoes are a waste of luggage space.

This is my guide to the best shoes for Italy travel, chosen for comfort and style.

If you are traveling with kids, find here >>> our guide to the best kids’ shoes for Italy .

The Best shoes for Italy Travel Chart

The best shoes for italy travel : how to pick.

When picking shoes for Italy travel, you need to look at three main things:

Season of your trip – rain is possible in all seasons except summer.

If you are traveling to Italy between September and May, you need shoes that can take the rain and, ideally, a second pair, should one get soaked.

Activities – if you plan on hiking, you need proper walking shoes.

This applies to trails on the Dolomites and if you want to see the trails on the Amalfi Coast or Cinque Terre, where inappropriate footwear on the trails will also make you incur a pricey fine!

Comfort – the best shoes for Italy travel are comfortable.

This may sound like an obvious point but I have seen so much incorrect advice out there, it is a point I need to make!

We love a stylish look in Italy, but we are practical. Do not believe people who tell you Italians do not wear sneakers: of course we do!

blooming alley in Spello italy

In Italy, we do not wear sneakers in the office but we do wear them if we travel, if we are sightseeing and in any informal situation.

Do not go for a less comfortable shoe out of this misconception, sneakers are perfect for Italy (see below for tips on stylish ones).

In this guide, I give tons of recommendations about shoes for Italy that are both comfortable and stylish but if you need to choose only one of the two things, please choose comfort!

Your feet will thank you and no, no one will judge you!

Picking the best shoes for Italy: our top tips

Whether you are buying new shoes for Italy or going through your shoe wardrobe to pick the best ones for your Italian adventure, I recommend the following:

Choose rubber soles

The best shoes for Italy’s cobbles and city pavements are cushioned and with flexible rubber soles.

Italians are fond of stylish sneakers (see below some of our favorite sneakers for Italy) and they are the perfect choice if you want to walk without looking like a tourist – which is not a problem, but something I know many want to try to avoid!

Top tip! The best walking shoes have soles that bend at the ball of your foot, not at the arch. Arch support is crucial to avoid injury and tiredness and checking where the natural fold of the shoe falls is a quick way to test it.

Avoid heels

High heels are terrible on cobbles and steps, two things you will often encounter in Italy.

Unless you have a special event you need to go to or you know you will be able to taxi from your hotel to a restaurant, you can safely leave your heels at home.

Wedges, a pair of pretty ballerinas or decorated sandals are a perfect alternative.

cobbled street in Italy

Save flip flops for the beach

Flip flops are beachwear in Italy and I recommend avoiding them in cities and towns, other than in coastal areas.

Flip flops do not offer sufficient support or protection to keep you safe on city pavement and the rubber ones (I am thinking Hawaiana style – other types such as leather ones are fine) may not pass the dress code rules of more stylish terraces and restaurants in cities like Rome.

Sandals in leather are, style-wise and comfort-wise, preferable and more versatile.

While I do recommend packing rubber flip-flops for the beach and the pool, they are not a versatile item for Italy and I don’t recommend them as everyday shoe.

Pick running shoes carefully if you want a versatile look

Sneakers and running shoes are great walking shoes for Italy and I recommend them for long strolls and everyday sightseeing.

They are also super versatile for kids and can be your children’s only pair of shoes during the trip.

These are our shoes!

However, for adults and elderly visitors, it can be good to know that they are not super common and are considered very casual.

This is not a problem in the vast majority of places but if you have plans to go to a nicer restaurant, you may want to have a pair that is sober in colors and opt for a fashion runner mote than a full-on sports one.

This is not a rule, just something you may want to consider if going to a nicer dinner.

If you go for one pair of sneakers to wear exclusively, I recommend you opt for sober colors and a less sporty look, Although fashion is changing so quickly, this tip may get outdated fast!

Fashion sneakers are very common and versatile – fashion shoes such as Stan Smith by Adidad, Veja or some New Balance are popular in Italy, especially with the under 50 crowd.

You will find below some of my top picks.

The best shoes for Italy in summer and the best sandals for walking in Italy

Comfortable walking sandals are the best type of shoe for Italy in summer.

Finding comfortable sandals can be a challenge: pretty ones often have many straps and laces, and while they may do look very ‘Italian’ due to the gladiator mental association, they can also cut into your skin and become a pain to wear.

The best ones to pack are those that come with a rubber sole and cushioning for walking.

If you prefer to keep your feet covered, closed-toe sandals light summer sneakers are also a good choice; however, make sure they are truly breathable as the temperatures in Italy can be scorching!

Woman feet and child feet on cobbles wearing sandals

Good to know! Good quality walking sandals are appropriate for men and women. It is however important to know that sandals are not often as versatile for men as they are for women. More upscale restaurants may not allow them: for gentlemen, it is safer to opt for closed-toe shoes in the evening. I say this from experience as my very casual husband was refused entry to a nice terrace due to open shoes! Not an absolute rule but worth knowing if you have upscale plans!

My favorite sandals for Italy and shoes for Italy in the summer are:

Teva Sandals – my go-to sandals for Italy, you can choose between a leather model (my personal favorite) or a more sporty-looking water-resistant one.

The water-resistant one is perfect if you want to use these sandals also for hot springs and the beach.

A good Teva sandal for men is Teva Men’s M Katavi 2 , comfortable for walking and in a stylish brown tone.

Ecco Damara sandals are a good, versatile choice for walking in Italy. The black and tan color make them very versatile and a good pick if you are looking for sandals you can wear day – to – night. Check models and prices here

Birkenstock are not to everyone’s taste but they are excellent walking shoes and are popular in Italy with tourists and locals alike. You can check colors and models,  with or without a backstrap here .

Ahnu sandals are super cute and excellent for walking. I particularly like the ones with cages’ toes for their look and extra protection.  You can check prices and models here .

Plaka makes great travel sandals. Comfortable and versatile, they are the best to go from city to beach and come in various colors and shapes to suit most feet.  Check them here .

Sketchers Cali Wedges are my go-to wedge sandal for dinners out in Italy. Unless you are very used to walking in wedges, I do not find them great for prolonged day wear but more than comfortable for an evening walk to the restaurant or a night out.  Check price and colors here .

The best shoes for Italy in winter

The best shoes for Italy travel in the coldest months are those that keep you warm and dry as well as comfortable.

Italy sees rain in the winter, sometimes very heavy, and especially in the North, you will be happy to have boots that can keep your feet and calves warm.

My favorite shoe models for Italy in winter are brogue-style shoes, ankle boots, tall boots and sneakers.

The best men’s shoes for winter in Italy are brogue-style shoes, boots and sober sneakers for sightseeing.

Blondo Ankle Boots – Comfortable and stylish, Blondo ankle boots are great for walking all day and come in several models. Check their selection of materials, shapes and heel height  here.

Ankle boots for men are also a stylish choice: we like these by Ecco , which are both comfortable and versatile, but the same brand offers several styles, including ankle boot sneakers.

Tall boots – Tall boots are a great choice for winter in Italy.

For sightseeing in cities and towns, you will not need them lined; however, a rubber sole and waterproof material are a must.

Stylish sneakers are trendy in Italy.

I personally love them and find them the best shoe to walk all day and go sightseeing.

They are the go-to shoe for the young and are now widely accepted as footwear for pretty much all generations in the appropriate colors and shapes.

The ones to go for are the fashionable ones rather than running ones: Ecc Soft are cute walking shoes with a versatile look and New Balance, Stan Smith by Adidas are also good examples of stylish sneakers.

In winter, favor those that will keep you warm and avoid those made of material that can get ruined in the rain.

Runners are brilliant on Italy’s hard cobbles, but they do not usually stand the rain, so in winter, it is wise to bring a second pair should you find yourself soaked or facing a full day of rain showers.

When it comes to winter sneakers, we like Ecco Soft shoes for women and Ecco Soft men’s fashion sneakers .

They are perfect for a casual look that goes day to night and they come in black and brown color to suit most styles

Among our favorite men shoes for Italy in the winter are Ecco Byword , a comfortable and versatile slip-on sneaker

The best shoes to travel to Italy in spring and fall.

Spring and fall give you a broader scope in terms of shoe fashion.

The temperatures at these times are usually mild and despite the chance of rain, especially in April and November, you can expect a reasonable amount of dry days.

These are my go-to shoes for Italy in spring and autumn.

Adidas breathable sneakers – I love how breathable and lightweight Adidas summer sneakers are.

While they have a sporty look that will not work with all outfits, they are so comfortable that I often travel with them as my only pair of shoes.

Ecco Soft are also excellent mid-season walking shoes for men and women: see here Ecco Soft for women (several colors) and Ecco Soft for men (several colors).

Sketchers walking slip-on shoes are also a good compromise between the comfort of a sneaker and a more ‘together’ look.

Try  Sketchers sports fashion sneaker  or their ‘ Go walk ‘ shoe range for the most comfortable experience.

Barefoot shoes for Italy: what you need to know

I love barefoot shoes: I wear them all year round and I have several pairs in different models that bring me from winter to summer.

However, barefoot shoes are not for everyone and even I find they can be hard for Italy. In Rome, I found the uneven terrain and the cobbles very tiring with a barefoot sole, and I am very used to them!

If you are thinking of bringing barefoot shoes to Italy, make sure you are very well used to them: Italian pavements are not the place to experiment with them!

For the same reason, I recommend caution with very flat shoes such as Superga and Converse: I find their flat sole and lack of breathability a problem: only pack them if you are already used to them at home.

Essential shoe accessories for Italy travel

Now that you have the perfect shoes for your Italy adventure, you may want to add other nice to have articles:

Lock laces – the ideal choice to prevent laces to come undone and cause hazards on escalators and public transport

No show socks for men and women , perfect for low cut shoes

Travel shoe bags – perfect to pack shoes in a safe and hygienic way

I hope you enjoyed our selection of favorite travel shoes for Italy. Safe travels!

Soooo… which shoes do you recommend after returning?  I am spending a week in Cinque Terre only (ok, one night in Pisa at the end) and am not sure what to take.  Found the cute hiking shoes and thought about a pair of chaco sandals with rugged soles that might pass for dressy at night?  How dressy is the night life there? Space in luggage limited so I don't want to pack the wrong clothes. Great blog.  Glad I found it by accident. Lisa

How exciting that you will be going to Cinque Terre! The nightlife there was pretty casual, especially since many visitors were hikers too. I think one hiking shoe and a sandal that could be worn at night time would be perfect. Your feet will be grateful if they are comfortable! I brought a pairs of heels with me that I didn’t even take out of my suitcase. Even when we went to a nicer restaurant, there was way too much walking on cobbled streets for heels. Have a great time and let me know if you have any other questions.

Luggage will probably be your best friend when you travel. Don\’t pick just a cheap piece of luggage. Pick a product known for quality, such as Samsonite or Wenger luggage.

hey really liked your blog , it is so helpful and interesting , it cleared all my doubts. thank you

Whether you’re packing for a business trip or your annual vacation, space and weight are usually limited. One way to make the most of your luggage allowance is to carefully choose which shoes you take. A lightweight, comfortable pair that can fulfill several different functions (from providing support on your city walking tour or hiking excursion to looking good at dinner afterward) is ideal.

Our travel experts tested 22 of the best women’s shoes for your next adventure, rating each pair for comfort, fit, quality, and value, then choosing winners for a range of categories from “Best Sandals” to “Most Sustainable.”

Best Overall

Adidas cloudfoam pure 2.0 running shoes.

 Amazon

  • Cushioning 4 /5
  • Responsiveness 3.5 /5
  • Blister Protection 4.5 /5

Ready out of the box

Hard-wearing and easy to clean

Reasonable price point

Limited color choices

If you’re looking for an everyday, running-inspired sneaker that won’t break the bank, you can’t go wrong with the Adidas Cloudfoam Pure Sneaker. Made especially for women, they feature a breathable, foot-hugging textile upper and a combined Cloudfoam midsole and outsole. We found the latter so comfortable that we likened wearing them to having our feet cradled by a cloud and reported no rubbing or irritation even though we wore them for extended periods without socks. The shoes have laces and score sustainability points by utilizing high-performance recycled materials.

We found them impressively durable, with no noticeable wear or odor even after all three test wears. The soles got a little bit dirty, but we were able to clean them with a wipe of a damp cloth. As for the price tag, we were astonished when we discovered how affordable these sneakers are—our tester would happily have paid three times the price for the quality and comfort experienced. The shoes come in neutral colors and full and half sizes from 5 to 12. We found that they fit perfectly and were true to size.

Sizes: 5 to 12 | Materials: Knit textile upper, Cloudfoam midsole and outsole | Sustainability: Primegreen recycled materials

Superga Classic Sneaker

  • Comfort 4.5 /5
  • Quality 4.5 /5

Sturdily built

Timeless style

Huge choice of sizes and colors

Not the best for all-day wear

First launched in 1925, the Superga 2750 Cotu Classic Sneaker has become an emblem of Italian style inspired by ladies’ tennis shoes. Although more expensive than our overall winner, we feel that the price tag is a fair reflection of its combined quality and style. It features a cotton upper and lining, a rubber outsole, and a lace closure. Our tester found the shoes incredibly comfortable out of the box, with cushioned soles that provided good support for indoor and outdoor use. The fit was true to size, although those with wide feet may want to size up.

However, we would recommend them for a light travel day rather than one with extensive walking since we did experience some discomfort after spending more than two-thirds of the day on our feet. Nevertheless, we were impressed by the quality construction with thick soles and sturdy stitching. We also appreciated that the shoes didn’t become saturated when caught in the rain as other fabric shoes may do. Choose one of many gorgeous pastel colors, from classic white to violet or light blue.

Best Walking

New balance women's 574 core sneaker.

New Balance

  • Comfort 4 /5
  • Quality 5 /5

Wear well for extended periods

Sturdy, reliable construction

Variety of sizes

Sizing can be tricky

The New Balance 574 Core Sneaker wins our vote as an easy, neutral choice that’s well-made and superbly comfortable. Designed as a hybrid road and trail shoe, it’s suitable for wherever your walking takes you, even on a trip to Disney. We found the sneakers so lightweight it was easy to forget we were wearing them. This lightness comes from their recycled polyester mesh upper with responsibly sourced leather accents and EVA foam cushioning around the midsole and heel. A rubber outsole provides solid arch support.

We especially liked that the laces stayed tied throughout our test wear periods and that the shoes went well with most casual outfits. In fact, we were surprised to find this level of comfort and style for under $100 (although you’d likely want a flashier sneaker for anything more formal). We found the sneakers roomier than expected, although the New Balance website recommends sizing up. But, with extended-width sizes available, you should be able to find your perfect fit. Colors range from black to burgundy or navy, all with white accents.

Sizes: 5 to 12 | Materials: Mesh upper, EVA midsole, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Recycled polyester, rubber, and bio-based foam

On Running Women's Cloudrift Shoe

  • Comfort 4.3 /5

Sleek, statement-making aesthetic

Easily fit into luggage

Key functional elements

Only available in regular fit

If you’re headed to the big city and need travel shoes that look as good as they feel, we recommend the On Running Cloudrift Sneaker. Available in three colorways—White/Sand, Metal/Navy, or Ivory/Storm—they’re as fashion-forward as a sneaker can be, looking just as good with cute jeans or dresses as they do with athleisure wear. We loved the lightweight, breathable mesh upper made of performance running materials and the added heel cushioning provided by the Speedboard midsole.

The shoes were comfortable right out of the box, with zero time required to break them in. Our tester appreciated their significant support—but did caution that potential buyers should size their pair carefully to avoid the structured cushioning hitting in awkward places and causing discomfort. There are no extra-width sizes, unfortunately. Nevertheless, with no wear and tear visible after our test period, these sneakers are likely to last a long time and are both light and packable enough to make them the perfect traveling companion.

Sizes: 5 to 11 | Materials: Mesh upper, unspecified mid- and outsole | Sustainability: 35 percent recycled materials

Best Sandals

Keen women's elle backstrap sandal.

  • Quality 4.8 /5

Provide stable ride

Cute and casual aesthetic

Reduced environmental impact

Relatively expensive

Comfortable, attractive, lightweight, quick to dry, and easy to clean—it’s difficult to imagine a more perfect summer travel shoe than the KEEN Elle Backstrap Sandal. We loved the stretchy straps, allowing a snug fit without cutting off circulation. Made from 100 percent recycled plastic bottles, the straps held their shape even after miles of walking, keeping our feet securely in place with no slipping or sliding. The sandals also feature a compression-molded EVA midsole and an EVA footbed with arch support for all-day comfort.

The rubber outsole offers plenty of traction and is non-marking, making it ideal for adventurous travel—whether you’re hitting the trail or heading out on a boat trip. The outsoles are also sustainable, using jute infusions to reduce the amount of rubber used. While pricey for sandals, we ultimately felt the cost was well worth it for the combination of quality and understated style. Our test pair was true to size, and there are many colors to choose from, including two-toned, patterned, and tie-dye shades.

Sizes: 5 to 11 | Materials: PET straps, EVA midsole, jute-infused rubber outsole | Sustainability: Straps made from recycled plastic bottles

Best Hiking Sandals

Chaco women's zx2 classic sandal.

Lets you dial in the perfect fit

Handles demanding use

Toe loop may cause discomfort at first

Although we liked the Chaco Zx2 Classic Sandals so much we would recommend them “for anyone, for any kind of wear,” we found them particularly suitable for hiking trips. The polyester jacquard webbing straps wrap around the foot and through the midsole and are fully adjustable. This, combined with the added toe loop, makes the fit fully customizable for incredibly sturdy, supportive, all-day comfort. After eight solid hours of active wear, our feet were not tired.

The sandals also feature a podiatrist-accepted, women’s specific PU footbed that promotes alignment and a non-marking ChacoGrip rubber outsole. We found the latter very thick, with a deep lug for excellent traction on rougher terrain. The only downside? We did experience some initial chafing around the toe loop, so we recommend breaking the sandals in before heading out on a hike. Choose yours in a medium or wide fit, in a range of colors from classic black to statement-making prints.

Sizes: 5 to 12 (no half-sizes) | Materials: Polyester straps, PU midsole, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Vegan-friendly construction

Best for the Office

Olukai leather sneakers.

  • Value 4.8 /5

The right balance between rigidity and flex

Two-way heel

Easy to maintain

Back tab may bump against the Achilles tendon

The Olukai Pehuea Lī ‘Ili Sneaker is an excellent choice for traveling professionals who need to look put-together but still want all-day comfort. Crafted from soft, full-grain leather, the shoes mold to your feet as you wear them, with anatomically contoured footbeds that we found instantly comfortable—no breaking-in required. The sneakers provide good arch support and offer a roomy toe box (perfect for those with wide feet).

Other than that, we loved that the footbeds are both removable and washable—a major plus for those who don’t like ruining their workplace aesthetic by wearing socks with their sneakers. And, a collapsible drop-in heel converts the sneakers to slip-ons for easy on-and-off through the airport (or under your desk). Other highlights include the non-marking Wet Grip Rubber outsole and the construction, which is durable enough to justify the slightly higher price tag. Choose from a range of office-appropriate colors, including white, tan, or black.

Sizes: 5 to 11 | Materials: Leather upper, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Not listed

Most Sustainable

Allbirds women's plant pacers.

  • Value 4.5 /5

Wear in quickly

Cushioned fit

Not in love with the color

One for all those who want to look and feel good while also doing their bit to save the planet, the Allbirds Plant Pacers are 100 percent plastic- and petroleum-free. The uppers are made from plant leather, while the sugarcane-based, green EVA foam midsole is lined with a eucalyptus and recycled polyester blend. The outsole is natural rubber; even the laces feature 100 percent recycled polyester. We love the brand’s commitment to upcycling and feel that the shoes’ sustainability justifies their high-end price tag.

They’re also lovely to look at, with a clean, refined aesthetic reinforced by a classic cupsole stitch. The only drawback is the slightly off-white color, which we felt seemed slightly unintentional, with no other colors to choose from. Nevertheless, the shade did hold up well to extended wear, despite our fears about potential staining. We found the shoes a little stiff out of the box, but within a wear or two, they felt as if we had owned them for years. They’re sturdy without being too rigid, with a comfortably thick sole and cushioned heel.

Sizes: 5 to 11 (no half-sizes) | Materials: Plant leather upper, SweetFoam midsole, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Made from plant-based or recycled materials

Best Splurge

Frankie4 australia women's winnie ii white suede shoes.

  • Comfort 5 /5

Upscale, slightly retro style

Adjustable fit

Zero breaking-in period required

Some more colors would be nice

We loved the look of the Frankie4 Winnie II Suede Sneakers, with their luxe perforated leather uppers and buttery soft suede accents. We had never experienced such out-of-the-box comfort before, so we would wholeheartedly recommend these sneakers despite them costing roughly four times the price of our overall winner. They have a shock-absorbing sole and use a specifically placed foam lining (made from recycled plastic bottles) to prevent pressure and rubbing.

Furthermore, the podiatrist-designed footbed features a triple-layer system for impressive heel, arch, and forefoot support. We found that our heels didn’t move at all, and at no time did our toes feel cramped. Using the included insole set, the fit can also be customized to suit regular, wide, or narrow feet. Other benefits include the slip-resistant sole, the absence of any heavy materials for travel-friendly lightness, and an additional set of laces for alternate styling. The sneakers come in just two colors: white and black/white.

Sizes: 6 to 13 | Materials: Leather upper, rPET foam lining, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Lining made from recycled plastic bottles

TripSavvy / Morgan Ashley Parker

The Cloudfoam Pure Sneaker from Adidas has everything you want in a travel shoe: a light and breathable upper, extra cushy and supportive soles, and a reasonable price tag. If you are the type of traveler who tends to rack up miles at your destination, go for the New Balance 574 Core Sneaker .

First, we removed each pair of shoes from their packaging and visually inspected their material and design quality. In particular, we tested for potential arch support issues by seeing how much the sole flexed when bent in the middle. Next, we completed at least three test wear periods: the first for 30 minutes, the second for three hours, and the third for a full day.

During each test period, we evaluated the shoes’ fit, whether they chafed or applied pressure in uncomfortable places, how breathable they were, and their traction on various surfaces and in different weather conditions. Finally, we scored each pair from 1 to 5 for comfort, fit, quality, and value, with the overall score determining whether they were included in our final selection.

Other Travel Shoes We Tested

Allbirds Wool Runners : While we found these sneakers comfortable and appreciated their sleek look, they were unsuitable for use in any kind of precipitation—making them too limited for a travel shoe.

TripSavvy / Taylor Fox

Vessi Women's Everyday Classic : We loved that these shoes were waterproof and lightweight, making them super versatile. However, they lost points because we didn't think they were stylish enough for evening wear.

Suavs Women's The Zilker Gum : Although comfortable, we had concerns about the long-term durability of these shoes. They're also relatively expensive, although we did appreciate their packability and removable insoles.

Taos Footwear Women's Star Sneaker : We found that these sneakers fit more narrowly than expected and experienced some rubbing during our test wears. We also felt that the arch support was uncomfortably pronounced.

TripSavvy / Anna Knief

ECCO Women's Soft Sneaker : These sneakers were comfortable from the first wear and essentially fine in every way (if a bit overpriced). However, we wished they were a brighter white and came in half sizes.

Ryka Devotion Plus 3 Walking Shoe : While we felt these shoes weren't comfortable or supportive enough for serious runners, they were great for everyday use. The quality was good, and we liked their lightweight breathability.

Birdies The Starling : These shoes had a significant break-in period, but they were very comfortable afterward. We loved the premium materials and professional look but would recommend it for business travel only.

TripSavvy / Anna Popp

BIRKENSTOCK Arizona Essentials EVA : The pros of these shoes are that they're light, waterproof, and attractive. Cons were that it took a while to get the fit right and that they were pretty expensive for a simple sandal.

Teva Universal Trail Sandals : These are excellent quality, comfortable sandals that will likely last a long time. They're on the more expensive side, though, and we'd recommend sizing up if you're between sizes.

Osay Leather Slide Loafer : We love these beautifully made shoes for their quality leather construction, comfort, and the fact they can transform into slip-ons via a collapsible heel. They don't have much support, though.

What to Look For in Travel Shoes

Type of shoe.

The best type of shoe depends on where you’re going, the weather you’re expecting, and the kind of activities you’ll be doing. For a city break with lots of walking around town and perhaps a few park outings or urban hikes, you can’t beat a comfortable sneaker with plenty of breathable support. Choose one in a neutral shade like white, black, or tan, and you can probably wear it out to dinner as well—saving you from having to pack formal footwear. If you’re headed somewhere tropical , a lightweight, quick-drying sandal with a cute aesthetic and enough traction to be practical is the perfect all-rounder.

The travel shoes mentioned on this list range in price from around $50 to approximately $200. With our overall winner also being the most affordable, it’s definitely possible to buy the perfect travel shoe without breaking the bank. However, you may want to pay a little more for a brand you know and love, for premium quality materials that will stand the test of time, or for a shoe that gives you peace of mind by exclusively using plant-based or recycled materials. Generally speaking, $100 is the average you should expect to spend on a good pair of travel shoes, with anything less or more representing the cheaper and pricier ends of the spectrum, respectively.

Wearability

If one of the defining features of a travel shoe is that it can be worn in multiple different scenarios (and will therefore be one of only a few pairs you take with you), it’s essential that you actually enjoy wearing it and are comfortable doing so. Fit is key—the shoe should hug snugly enough that there’s no slippage when you walk, without rubbing, chafing, or putting pressure on any part of your foot or toes. If you’re going to be wearing the shoe for extended periods, some arch support is a good idea, while breathability is important if you plan on using the shoe for active pursuits such as hiking, running, or extensive walking.

The number of shoes you should pack for a vacation is very subjective, with the answer depending on everything from the climate of your destination to the range of activities you’ll be taking part in and your personal style choices. But, savvy travelers often apply the three-shoe rule to their packing: one pair of sandals or flip-flops, one pair of comfy sneakers that can also be dressed up, and possibly a pair of formal shoes or heels. You can switch one or more of these out to suit your specific needs—proper walking boots instead of heels for a hiking trip , perhaps, or insulated winter boots instead of sandals if you’re headed somewhere chilly.

How you clean your travel shoes depends a lot on the shoe, with different methods recommended for different types, materials, and brands. The best option is to check and follow individual manufacturer’s guidelines for shoe cleaning and care. Generally speaking, though, many shoes can be spot-cleaned with a damp cloth. Some are machine washable, while others have removable insoles that can be washed separately. The latter is a good idea if you’re heading somewhere warm, tend to get sweaty feet when walking a lot, or prefer not to wear socks with your sneakers.

Although taking your shoes off at security is not a requirement at every airport, it’s a common enough rule that it makes sense to fly in footwear that’s easy to take off and put back on again quickly. That means swapping laces for zippers, elasticated straps, or pull-on styles, or, if you’re heading somewhere warm, opting for sandals or flip-flops. Some of the shoes on our list are designed with a collapsible heel so that you can slip your feet in and out in a matter of seconds but also enjoy a more structured, supported style when you reach your destination. Security aside, it’s always a good idea to fly in comfortable shoes —think sneakers, not heels.

Best Shoes to Pack for Italy

Packing for a trip to Italy can be hard. On the one hand, you want to be stylish. On the other, you want to be comfortable as you walk around museums in Florence and ruins in Pompeii .

The same criteria apply to packing the shoes for your trip. Shoes take up a lot of room in your suitcase and you want to make sure that you have room to bring back souvenirs from your travels.

You want to make sure that you pack shoes that you want to wear, that are practical for the activity and terrain, and that won’t give you blisters at the end of the day.

Most guidebooks say that you should pack two pairs of shoes for a weeklong trip. I agree that two pairs are the minimum ideal for a week in Italy, though there are many situations when you may need more. But which shoes? For what? And when?

In my experience, the following styles and brands have proven to be the best shoes for traveling around Italy. While I am female, I am familiar with shoe-packing needs for men and kids. So the below suggestions are somewhat unisex.

best travel shoes italy

Birkenstock Sandals

  • Best for: Almost every activity, from walking around ruins to wearing to a casual dinner
  • When to wear them: Spring through fall

Birkenstock sandals, particularly the Gizeh variety, have been my go-to, warm-weather travel shoe for more than two decades. They are comfortable and renowned for their arch support. And now that Birkenstock makes their shoes in so many fun colors and textures (e.g., patent leather, fake snakeskin-patterned), you can wear them with just about everything.

I pack my Birkenstocks for nearly all Italy trips between April and October , especially if I’m spending most of the time in Southern Italy .

For beach/summer holidays, I sometimes just pack two pairs of Birkenstocks—one leather/cork variety for sightseeing and going out and the other pair made of EVA (plastic) for sand and sea activities.

Birkenstock EVAs are inexpensive and easy to clean, making them great beach shoes. But I don’t like them as much for sightseeing because they are not as breathable as the sturdier, leather variety.

Another very popular Birkenstock style is the Arizona. Birkenstock Arizona sandals are open-toed, rather than with a thong toe, so they are easily worn with socks. That sounds like a fashion disaster, but they are very practical and worn by people of all ages in Italy and elsewhere. They are also the perfect shoe to slip on for going down to hotel breakfast.

Runners-Up: Birkenstocks are the best-selling walking sandals. But I would also recommend Vionic or Merrell walking sandals, both of which are known for their comfortable and sturdy footbeds. Note, however, that these two shoe brands tend to be more on the sporty side, so they may not be as versatile when pairing with your wardrobe.

best travel shoes italy

Leather Sneakers

  • Best for: Sightseeing, casual dinners, bar-hopping.
  • When to wear them: Year-round, especially on travel days and rainy days

Whether you call them sneakers, tennis shoes, or trainers, you should pack a pair when visiting Italy. But you don’t have to pack ugly ones!

Adidas Superstar, Adidas Stan Smith, and Adidas Gazelles are leather fashion sneakers that have served me very well while traveling in Italy. Not only are they comfortable for activities like climbing stairs, walking on the rooftop of St. Peter’s or the Milano Duomo , or ambling around the dungeons of the Colosseum , they are neutral enough in black or white to match everything as well as hip enough to help me blend in with the locals.

I also love Nike Air Force One sneakers for this purpose. Puma Classics also look good, but you may not want to get them in suede if rain is in the forecast.

No matter which sneakers you choose to bring, I recommend bringing ones in a neutral color and classic look if you want to look less like a tourist and more put together.

Since leather sneakers are somewhat heavy and take up room in a suitcase, I usually end up wearing them on the plane or train . This way, I don’t have heavy-ish sneakers in my suitcase and am primed for racing to a gate or platform if needed.

I also like to wear sneakers on travel days because this way I am also wearing socks, which I find essential for wearing in airports and on planes.

best travel shoes italy

Flexible/Breathable Sneakers

  • Best for: Sightseeing, jogging/exercise
  • When to wear them: During the hot, dry summer; on active vacations; on travel days

I really enjoy running in Rome and going jogging on my Italy travels. So, I often pack a pair of stylish leather sneakers PLUS a pair of lightweight running shoes.

Yes, I tend to violate the two-shoe minimum when I pack. But let me explain!

Flexible, breathable, textile-upper sneakers are easy to cram into a suitcase. They weigh very little and they hardly take up any room. This is a great “extra” pair to throw in should you want another option, especially on those mornings after a long day of sightseeing and your feet are sore.

In this case, I like Adidas “Cloudfoam” sneakers. They are light as clouds and so cushiony you will forget you are wearing them. Of course, this brand is just a suggestion. But these are what have worked for me.

By the way, I also recommend Cloudfoams for the plane because they are so easy to put on and take off. But they are better “suitcase shoes” because of their near-weightlessness.

Water Shoes

  • Best for: Beach sand and slippery sea cliffs
  • When to wear them: At the beach

If you are going to spend a lot of time at the beach, I recommend bringing some water shoes.

Italian beaches are either rocky and/or have volcanic or partially volcanic sand. The little black particles in the sand heat up and can scorch your feet if you aren’t careful. Kids are particularly susceptible to getting their little feet burned on the beach.

Another time you may need water shoes is when you are at a beach or seaside location with a lot of cliffs. This beautiful grotto in Puglia comes to mind.

If you’re not going to get water shoes but you are going to the beach, do make sure you pack a pair of flip-flops or slides . For little kids, consider some (ugly but practical) Crocs . Your feet—and your kids’ feet—will thank you.

Rubber Boots

  • Best for: Rainy or muddy days
  • When to wear them: Rainy season (November-March)

A different type of “water shoe,” these boots are best for rainy and/or muddy days. You probably won’t want to pack rubber boots (e.g., Wellies or Hunter ) unless you are heading to Venice during the acqua alta time. They are heavy and take up a lot of room in your suitcase. But it is so nice to have them when you really need them.

The best shoes for Italy: how to pick

The type of shoes you pack for Italy depends largely on the type of trip you have planned and the season.

On the Dolomites for instance, you will need proper hiking shoes that can keep you safe on hard terrains and proper mountain roads or full on sky gear for the winter.

If you are just going to the beach for some summer sun, light sandals are probably all you need.

If, however, you want to make the most of the many sightseeing opportunities Italy, you may need versatile shoes that can go from day tonight and keep your feet safe.

These are our tips for picking the best shoes for Italy.

Choose rubber soles

In Italy you are likely to do a lot of walking and shoes with cushioned rubber soles are the best to keep your feet comfortable and protect you from hard steps on cobbled streets and city pavements.

The best one are thick enough to offer good cushioning but also flexible enough to somewhat adapt to your foot: a good walking shoe bends at the ball of the foot rather than along the arch, so this is something worth checking when buying a new pair or when packing tour bag with shoes not tried and tested yet.

Italians are fond of stylish sneakers (see below some of our favorite sneakers for Italy) so they are the perfect choice if you want to walk without looking like a tourist.

Avoid heels

Fashionable Italy may lead you to believe you need heels to go out as a woman but this is not the case. High heels, especially very high and slim ones are not that common as they tend to snap on uneven roads and may severely hurt you.

Lower heels or wedges are the way to go if you want to gain some height.

Save flip flops for the beach

An American friend of mine used to joke that you can always spot an American in Rome because they are the only ones who wear flip flops in the city. I am not sure this is the case but what is true is that flip flops are not usually regarded as city wear.

Italians love sandals for the summer but we usually prefer leather ones.

Unless you have good flip flops that can somewhat cushion your step, I do suggest you embrace the Italian way and leave them for the beach only: long hours walking on rubber are unlikely to do good to your joints and they are super unpleasant on cobbles!

The best shoes for Italy in winter

The best shoes for Italy travels in the coldest months are those that keep you warm and dry as well as comfortable. Italy sees rain in the winter, sometimes very heavy, and especially in the North  you will be happy to have boots that can keep your feet and calves warm.

These are some of our favourite models.

If you are unsure about weather in the North in winter, have a look at the Milan temperatures as a guide

The best shoes for Italy in fall and winter month are those who keep you comfortable, stylish and protected from the rain such as these ankle boots or taller knee boots

Ankle boots

Ankle boots are very versatile and popular with Italian women. They can be worn with trousers and skirts and they will protect you from the rain and ankle strains.

They come in a huge variety of colours and heights and they may well be the only shoe you will need in Italy in winter.

Blondo Ankle boots

Comfortable and stylish, Blondo ankle boots are great for walking all day and come is several models. Check their selection of materials, shapes and heel height here.

Toms Ankle boots

best travel shoes italy

Toms ankle boots have a bit of a heel so you need to gauge if they are the right choice for you. However, you are likely to find that it sturdy enough to be comfortable for walking. Check colours and prices here.

Tall boots came back into fashion in Italy many years ago and never left again. They are annoying to carry on you travels as they cannot be easily packed but if you can wear them on the plane, they can be very comfortable for walking and can easily go from day to night.

This, or you can make buying a new pair of boots your mission while in Italy: leather goods here are amazing!

To maximise comfort, I like to go for soft ones that will not rub at the ankles if worn for long hours.

best travel shoes italy

Unless you suffer the cold severely, usually lined boots are unnecessary. Do bring a pair that can take rain if you can as in Italy when it rain, it pours!

Stylish sneakers

Stylish sneakers are exceptionally popular in Italy and especially in the last few years they have exploded as a real fashion statement.

I personally love them and find them the best shoe to walk all day and go sightseeing.  They are the go-to shoe for the young and, in appropriate colours and shapes, are now widely accepted as footwear for pretty much all generations.

The ones to go for are the fashion ones rather than running ones. In winter, favour those that will keep you warm and avoid those made of material that can get ruined in the rain.

Runners are brilliant on Italy’s hard cobbles but they do not usually stand the rain so in winter it is wise to bring a second pair should you find yourself soaked or facing a full day of rain showers.

best travel shoes italy

New Balance sneakers  are great especially for narrow feet. I am also fond of  Adidas me mory foam   shoes, my go-to shoes for walking long hours.

The best shoes for Italy in summer

High temperatures in summer will make you want to reach for sandals and the best ones to pack are those that come with a rubber sole and cushioning for walking.

Finding comfortable sandals can be a challenge: the prettiest ones often have many straps and laces and while they do look very ‘Italian’, they can also cut into your skin and become literally a pain to wear.

The best shoes to travel to Italy in spring and fall

Spring and fall give you the wider scope in terms of shoe fashion. The temperatures at these times are usually mild and despite the chance of rain especially in April and November, you can expect a reasonable amount of dry days.

These are my go to shoes for Italy in spring and autumn.

Adidas breathable sneakers

best travel shoes italy

I love how breathable and lightweight Adidas summer sneakers are. While they do have a sporty look that will not work with all outfits, they are so comfortable I often travel with them as my only pair of shoes.

You can check colours and models here

Yosi samra ballerina flats

I don’t love ballerina flats for walking but adore them to go out.   Yosi Samra makes lovely ones that are comfortable and super flexible.

Sketchers walking slip on shoes

best travel shoes italy

A good option if you wan to the comfort of a sneaker but a less sporty look are slip on walking shoes. Try Sketchers sport fashion sneaker or their ‘ Go walk ‘ shoe range for the most comfortable experience.

I hope you enjoyed our selection of favourite travel shoes for Italy. Safe travels!

Best travel shoes — fashionable & comfortable shoes for traveling.

The ultimate guide to the best travel shoes that are both stylish and comfortable.

Packing , Product Reviews

best travel shoes italy

Picking the correct travel shoes is one of the most important (and most frustrating) parts of traveling to Europe. I still struggle with it—but don’t worry because in this guide I help you choose the best shoes for traveling.

UPDATE : I’ve also included my travel footwear recommendations for both women and men.

Quick Tips For Picking Comfortable Shoes For Travel

best travel shoes italy

Between living in NYC and spending a lot of time exploring Europe, I know first-hand that comfortable shoes make traveling much more enjoyable. You’ll easily walk 5-10 miles a day when exploring a city… even spending a few hours at a museum can be killer on your feet.

So treat your feet well.

Here are a few things to consider when evaluating your shoes:

  • Comfort Beats Fashion (Always) : It doesn’t matter how cute your shoes are — if they’re uncomfortable, they’re staying at home. One bad blister or an aching foot can truly ruin your day.
  • Quality socks will help prevent blisters, stop odor, and keep your feet comfortable. For more information about socks, be sure to read about our favorite socks for travel .
  • Support & Insoles: Every foot is different so we’ve found that adding a nice pair of insoles can make shoes, flats, and boots much more comfortable.
  • For example — A pair of flats isn’t appropriate for trekking through Iceland, and a pair of heavy-duty mountaineering boots probably is overkill for walking the streets of Paris.
  • Break In Your Shoes: BREAK IN YOUR SHOES! A lot of people forget this critical step because even the most comfortable shoes can cause blisters during the first couple of wearings. We recommend wearing your shoes for a couple of weeks before your trip.
  • Versatile Shoes: Depending on your travel style, you’ll want to limit the number of shoes you bring. We rarely travel with more than two pairs so make sure your shoes look good in a variety of settings.

Tips for Buying Shoes Online

Best travel shoes - A complete guide to the most comfortable shoes for travel.

Buying shoes online can be a bit tricky since all brands seem to fit a little differently. I almost exclusively order shoes from Zappos if I’m buying them online—they give you free delivery (which is often one or two-day shipping) and free returns.

If you’re not sure which size to buy, I suggest buying two sizes and then returning the pair that doesn’t fit. Zappos gives you a pre-paid return label and will refund your money within about 7 days—they make the process super easy.

The Best Travel Shoes By Category

To make things easier, I’ve divided this guide into sneakers, walking shoes, boots, sandals, flats, etc. — each section has footwear recommendations for both men and women. Feel free to jump around as needed.

The Best Sporty Casual Sneakers For Travel

Yes, you can wear sneakers when you travel without looking like a “tourist”. In fact, a cool-looking pair of sneakers is our preferred travel shoe in most cases. Luckily, there are a ton of fashionable options available these days but here are a few of our favorites.

Note: Some of the more “minimalist” shoes will benefit from the addition of insoles.

Women’s Casual Sneakers For Travel

best travel shoes italy

Ecco also makes a lot of cute, sturdy, & comfortable sneakers. The Ecco Soft VII is a great city shoe.

Allbirds - Best travel shoes

We’re really digging Allbirds shoes for travel. They’re sneakers but they’re made of wool — which sounds kind of weird but it actually works well. These shoes are super comfortable and you can wear them without socks (one of the benefits of wool is odor prevention). They are crazy lightweight so they’re easy to pack away. They come in multiple colors and cost $95. Available via Allbirds .

Allbirds multiple new shoe lines — I’m a fan of the Tree Runners and Tree Dashers because are made of eucalyptus pulp instead of wool so they’re a bit breezier than the Wool Runners.

Read our Allbirds Review if you want more information.

best travel shoes italy

We were recently in Madrid and we saw a ton of European men and women wearing Adidas Superstars . They were seriously everywhere. Zappos has multiple styles and colors — plus they’re fairly affordable.

best travel shoes italy

We’ve also noticed a huge rise in the popularity of New Balance shoes throughout Europe — we’ve seen everything from neutral to super bright colors. We’ve loved New Balance shoes for a long time so we’re happy they’re now popular in Europe.

A classic choice is the New Balance 574 because it comes in multiple colors and strikes that balance of being fashionable, sporty, and comfortable. For maximum comfort, consider any New Balance that features their Fresh Foam soles. Check out Zappos to see the various color options.

And of course, there is Nike — which is always a popular shoe choice for being fashionable and comfortable.

best travel shoes - casual sneakers

BENSIMON sneakers are a very popular and fashionable casual sneaker in France. You’ll see tons of trendy Parisians wearing them during the summer. They are available in dozens of colors and styles, but it can be a little difficult to find the full range of styles and colors in the US.

We don’t think you can have them shipped outside France from their website, but there are a few retailers who carry them in the US.

However, Superga  and Keds both make shoes in a very similar style (pictured above) — so they’re a great alternative that’s also easy to find.

best travel shoes - speary shoes

Sperry Top-Siders look great with shorts, capris, skirts, and jeans, making them super versatile. They are a good option for the spring or summer.

best travel shoes - puma women

Puma produces a number of sporty, yet fashionable, sneakers that are great for travel. Their styles are always changing, so you’ll want to check out all the different styles they have on Zappos .

best travel shoes - casual sneakers

Converse Chuck Taylor’s are ultra trendy in Europe right now and they make a cheap and shabby chic option. The Chucks 2 have good arch support but the normal Chucks are known for being pretty flat.

If you don’t like Chuck Taylor’s, there are many other similar style shoes available — for example,  Onitsuka Tiger by Asics  and  Vans .

best travel shoes - Tom's Shoes

Everyone knows about TOMS shoes, and they are great shoes for travel because they are comfortable, lightweight, and cute. These are great options for urban travel during the spring and summer. They’re not the most rugged shoes so they’re better suited for shorter periods of wear.

Men’s Casual Sneakers For Travel

best travel shoes - casual mens

Just about every athletic shoe brand has a line of casual sneakers — especially leather shoes that look good during the day and at night. Check out Nike , New Balance , Puma , and Adidas .

best travel shoes italy

We have also seen multiple Europeans wearing Adidas Ultra Boost — these seem to be the “it” shoes right now. A ton of people sing the praises of Adidas Ultra Boost for being the most comfortable shoes they’ve ever worn.

We also love their classic Adidas Originals and Superstar sneakers as they’ll never go out of style.

best travel shoes italy

We’re really digging Allbirds shoes for travel. They’re sneakers but they’re made of wool — which sounds kind of weird but it actually works well. These shoes are super comfortable and you can wear them without socks (one of the benefits of wool is odor prevention). And they are crazy lightweight so they’re easy to pack away. They come in multiple colors and cost $95. Available via Allbirds .

Allbirds has greatly expanded its shoe offerings to include shoes made of eucalyptus pulp instead of wool so they’re a bit breezier than their wool shoes — check them out here .

We’ve written a more in-depth  Allbirds Review  if you want to learn more.

best travel shoes italy

New Balance is another great brand that you’ll see all over Europe. We’ve been wearing them for years so it’s nice to see Europeans discovering them as well.

We’re big fans of the New Balance Classics because they have great retro style, but still offer the comfort of a running shoe. I’ve seen similar shoes in many stores and boutiques in Paris and Barcelona so you’ll see plenty of Europeans wearing these.

Athletic Walking & Running Shoes For Travel

Full-on athletic running/walking shoes will likely be the most comfortable option for exploring the streets of Europe. These might not be the most fashionable option but we’ve started noticing a lot more Europeans starting to wear them.

Women’s Athletic Shoes for Travel

best travel shoes italy

Hokas have become the undisputed “most comfortable” shoes on the market and they get rave reviews. Yes, they’re a bit ugly but even the most fashionable celebrities are wearing them so Hokas are on trend.

Hoka makes many models but we recommend the Hoka Clifton , Hoka Bondi , Hoka Rinkon , and the Hoka Arahi as they all make great travel shoe options. Check out Amazon for the full selection.

best travel shoes - brooks

One of the best-rated running shoes is the Brooks Ghost . These will not win any points for fashion, but they will keep your feet happy. In fact, all Brooks shoes get excellent comfort ratings.

best travel shoes - running shoes

If you’re looking for a comfortable athletic shoe that has a bit of a lower profile, check out the  Nike Free , New Balance Arishi , Adidas Running , and Adidas Originals series . All of these are sporty and fashionable.

best travel shoes italy

The Allbirds Tree Dashers 2 is the most advanced running shoe offered by Allbirds so it offers the brand’s most support and the greatest amount of cushioning. They’re super comfortable and they come in multiple colors.

Men’s Athletic Shoes

best travel shoes - nike

When it comes to nice-looking athletic shoes, Nike is hard to beat. We recommend the  Nike Air Pegasus , Nike Air Max , and Nike Free .

best travel shoes italy

Brooks is known for making crazy comfortable shoes and their Ghosts are universally loved for their comfort.

Waterproof Trekking/Hiking Shoes For Travel

Trekking/hiking shoes look a bit like beefed-up athletic running shoes and they’re designed for long hikes. This style of hiking shoe is a popular choice for many travelers because they offer a lot of support, they are generally lightweight, and most are waterproof/weather resistant — which is a huge plus.

Unfortunately, it is pretty tough to find a “fashionable” pair, but these are probably your best all-around option if you travel during the snowy/rainy months or if you plan on spending a lot of time in the countryside.

NOTE: Weather-resistant shoes (as opposed to “waterproof”) should be sufficient for most travelers.

Women’s Waterproof/Weather Resistant Hiking Shoes For Travel

best travel shoes - New Balance trail runners

Ok, these Fresh Foam Gobi V2 – Protect Pack from New Balance are technically “trail runners” but they’re highly water-resistant and nice looking. We could totally rock these in Europe.

best travel shoes - Keen hiking shoes

Keen is another brand known for being comfortable. These Keen Presidio shoes get rave reviews for their mix of hiking shoe durability and sneaker looks. Plus, they are waterproof, so this is a good option if you want a rugged shoe that is suitable for city travel. I also like the Keen Utility Detroit  and Keen Arroyo II because they get excellent reviews for comfort, but they do have a more utilitarian look.

best travel shoes - Merrell

Merrell is a great brand as well. Their Moab line of shoes and boots come in multiple styles — including many waterproof options. We also like the  Merrell Siren Hex Q2 Waterproof , and the  Merrell All Out Blaze 2 Waterproof . Merrell makes a ton of shoes so check out their page on Zappos to see them all.

Men’s Waterproof/Weather Resistant Hiking Shoes

best travel shoes - waterproof hikers

We’ve always been big fans of New Balance . We think they make some of the most fashionable rugged and waterproof hiking shoes — so you won’t look out of place while exploring the city. The  910v3 GORE-TEX is a waterproof athletic trail running shoe that we are digging. We also like the Fresh Foam Gobi V2 – Protect Pack (which is technically only “water-resistant” but it should handle rainy days without much issue).

best travel shoes italy

The Nike Shield line of sneakers are water-resistant so they’re a nice option if you want sneakers that can be worn in the rain but still look cool.

best travel shoes - Merrell hikers

Merrell makes a wide range of comfortable hiking shoes, and many of them are waterproof — which is nice if you travel to rainy climates. The Merrell Moab Waterproof and the Moab Vent (a great summer option) get top marks for comfort and support. The Merrell Chameleon 4 is a low-profile option that is comfortable and sturdy but still looks decent in an urban environment.

best travel shoes - Keen mens

Keen makes some of the most comfortable and durable hiking shoes. The Keen Austin is waterproof, supportive, and it has a decent style. The Keen Arroyo II , Targhee II , and the Keen Voyageur are three other comfortable options that are a bit more utilitarian.

Hiking Boots For Travel

Hiking boots will offer good support and will keep your feet comfortable on long walks, but they might be overkill for most city travel since they are heavy and bulky. Most travelers would be better off using lightweight hiking shoes but boots might be a good idea if you’re traveling in the winter or if you like the boot aesthetic.

Women’s Hiking Boots For Travel

best travel shoes - hiking boots womens

The  Vasque Sundowner GTX   and the Danner Jag both combine old-school style and comfort.

best travel shoes italy

These Columbia Newton Ridge Plus Waterproof Amped boots get a lot of love and they’re affordable.

Men’s Hiking Boots for Travel

best travel shoes - mens hiking boots

Timberland White Ledge Mid Waterproof  is a nice-looking boot that will serve you well in the winter. The  Merrell Moab Mid GORE-TEX® XCR  is a little more “outdoorsy” but it gets good reviews for comfort. The Danner Jags and the Danner Mountain 600 are two classic hiking boots with old-school style.

best travel shoes italy

The Adidas Terrex Free Hiker is a cross between a running shoe and a hiking boot. Loving all these new hybrids. We actually discovered these from an Instagram ad… and we might buy a pair (technology is scary!). Check them out on Zappos .

Teva Arrowood 2 Mid WP

We’re digging these Teva Arrowood 2 Mid WP boots . They have sneaker styling and comfort but the functionality of waterproof boots. Check them out on Zappos .

Casual Boots For Travel

Casual boots are nice because they are more fashionable than sneakers/athletic shoes, but they are often still comfortable. We prefer dark leather (since it will hide dirt stains well — especially in the winter), but suede can be perfectly fine in the summer.

Make sure you break in your boots for 2-3 weeks before your trip since boots require a longer break-in period.

Women’s Casual Boots for Travel

best travel shoes - clarks boots

The Clarks Desert Boots  are a nice lightweight and fashionable option that works well for the summer and looks great with skinny jeans. These are best suited for the summer since they’re not waterproof. I’d also recommend using an insole.

best travel shoes - chelsea boots

Chelsea boots are another great style of boot for travel because they are super easy to take off — which is great at airports. And they look cool, too. We think these Blunderstone BL585 and  Frye Chelsea boots look great and they get good reviews, but there are plenty of other styles/brands available .

Villa Waterproof Bootie

Blondo receives rave reviews for their boots — and many of them are waterproof so they’re great for rainy weather. They’re also fashionable if you’re trying to dress up your outfit. We’re digging their Villa Waterproof Bootie .

Men’s Casual Boots for Travel

best travel shoes - casual boots

Clarks Desert Boots  have been a classic boot for over 40 years and they’re still just as cool as ever — plus they come in multiple colors. We like these Cole Haan Chukka boots  and  Timberland Davis Square Plain Toe Chukka   because they’re both fashionable and comfortable. Borne also makes these slightly “dressy” Nigel Boots which are super comfortable.

best travel shoes - blunderstone boots

Another nice travel boot is the  Blundstone BL550 . These leather boots are comfortable, stylish, and rugged. The BL550 doesn’t have laces, so they are super easy to put on/remove, which is incredibly nice if you’re going to be flying a lot. Blundstone makes a lot of different models, so I suggest searching for other styles.

Best Travel Flats

Flats are a great option for city travel because they are lightweight, comfortable, and can be casual or dressy. Black or brown is the most practical color choice. Many flats don’t provide a lot of support, so it is advisable to add an insole to help improve comfort.

best travel shoes clarks flats

Clarks is known for being well-made, comfortable, and cute. They have a ton of different styles and colors

best travel shoes - Borne flats

Born makes a lot of cute and conformable flats. The Born Julianne  is one of their most popular models because they look great, provide decent arch support, and come in multiple colors. Born also has many other styles of flats that come in cool metallic or snakeskin finishes.

best travel shoes - Cole Haan flats

If fashion is a top priority, these Cole Haan flats might be the perfect flat since they’re known for providing a lot of extra cushioning. They have multiple colors available, but we would stick with the patent leather options.

best travel shoes - merrell flats

Merrell is known for making great hiking shoes, but they do make a few more stylish flats.

Travel Sandals

Sandals are great in warm weather and there are multiple styles available — from dressy to sporty. Unsurprisingly, the “fancier” sandals tend to have less support than the sporty versions — so keep that in mind.

Best travel shoes - Chaco sandals

Chaco is known for making some of the best hiking sandals. You won’t find these on the runway, but if you want excellent support these might be your best bet — whether you’re doing off-road hiking or exploring Europe’s cobblestone streets.

best travel shoes - Crocs sandals

It might sound strange, but Crocs actually makes a few pairs of nice-looking sandals. The Crocs Sexi Flip is chic, minimalist, and comfortable and the  Isabella T-Strap also gets a lot of love. Plus, they weigh just a few ounces so they will hardly add any weight to your bag.

best travel shoes - birk sandals

Birkenstocks are the quintessential “comfortable” sandal. They make multiple models so look around to see if any look good to you.

best travel shoes - Naut sandals

Naot is another brand that’s famous for making super comfortable sandals.

Insoles for Travel

travel shoes - insoles

Insoles are a great way to make your shoes much more comfortable. Some of the best are from Superfeet , Sorbothane , Spenco , and Sole , but there are plenty of other brands.

Check out Zappos for the full Hoka selection.

best travel shoes italy

On Cloud is another shoe brand that you’re probably seeing everywhere. These get rave reviews for their comfort and they come in multiple colors so you can find something that fits your style.

Check out Zappos for the full line of On Cloud shoes.

Clarks Shoes

best travel shoes italy

Clarks : Founded in 1825, Clarks is an English shoe brand that is known for making quality shoes, boots, and sandals. They became famous for their classic dessert boots (I own two pairs, myself) but they make a wide range of footwear options — especially casual leather sneakers, boots, and flats. See their full catalog on Zappos .

best travel shoes italy

Naot : Naot has made a name for itself for its extremely comfortable sandals — which get tons of rave reviews. View their full catalog on Zappos .

best travel shoes italy

Superga : Based in Italy since 1913, Superga has become famous for its classic low-profile and super sturdy sneakers that come in dozens of different colors. Check out their full catalog on Zappos .

best travel shoes italy

Born : Born is another brand that receives a lot of love for its comfort and craftsmanship. They make a wide range of footwear but they’re most known for their women’s flats and sandals. View their full catalog on Zappos .

best travel shoes italy

Blondo : Blondo’s biggest claim to fame is for their fashionable waterproof leather boots — which is something that’s actually fairly difficult to find. Take a look at their full catalog on Zappos .

best travel shoes italy

Blundstone : Blundstone is known for making super comfortable and durable waterproof boots for both men and women. Check out their full catalog on Zappos .

best travel shoes italy

Keen : Keen has traditionally been an outdoors footwear company that made quality but kinda ugly footwear… but they’ve started to make more casual and stylish options (without losing their outdoorsy performance). View their full catalog on Zappos .

Allbirds : Allbirds have exploded in popularity and they’ve been dubbed the “world’s most comfortable shoes.” While we’re not so sure about that claim, we can confirm that these are comfy. Plus, they’re super lightweight so they make a great “second pair” of shoes that can you easily pack into your bag.

best travel shoes italy

UGGS : We were pleasantly surprised to find that UGGS actually makes some very comfortable and stylish footwear. They’re worth checking out. See their full catalog on Zappos .

best travel shoes italy

Adidas : Adidas will never go out of style and you’ll see people of all ages rocking them all over Europe. We prefer sticking to their classic/retro options since they’re the most versatile but you do you. See their full catalog on Zappos .

best travel shoes italy

Nike : You’ll also see people rocking their Nikes all across Europe. I know that I do. That said, we recommend sticking with their retro or fashion-forward sneakers instead of their overly “athletic” shoes. I prefer buying my Nike shoes directly from Nike .

New Balance | Travel Shoes

New Balance : New Balance essentially makes two types of shoes — dorky dad/grandpa shoes and ultra-cool colorful shoes. Stick with the cool ones and you’ll fit right in with the other fashion-forward Europeans. See their full catalog on Zappos .

Foot Care Advice for Travellers

Sometimes, even with the best shoes, your feet will get a bit sore and banged up after walking for hours on end. So here are a few things you might want to pack in case your tootsies need a little extra TLC.

  • Blister Bandages: We always throw in a few blister bandages into our toiletry kit. These things can be a lifesaver. Check out Amazon for various options.
  • Quality Socks: We mentioned it before but nice socks make a world of difference. We prefer wool or wool/synthetic blends. Bombas and SmartWool Run Ultralight make great socks for all seasons—especially their merino wool options.
  • Foot Powder: Putting on a little footpowder before you head out each day will drastically reduce sweat and odor. Check Amazon as there are multiple options out there.
  • O’Keeffe’s Foot Cream: Pamper your feet — especially if you wear sandals often. O’Keeffe’s is the best-rated option on Amazon .
  • Keep Nails Trimmed: Long nails can cause a lot of toe pain so pack a pair of nail clippers.
  • Switch Up Shoes: We prefer to have a day-on-day-off wearing schedule with our shoes when we’re putting a lot of miles on shoes.

16 Tried-And-True Travel Shoes (for Walking All Day)

Three sets of men's travel shoes resting on the bumper of a van

Smart travelers know the value of great shoes. When you’re on your feet all day — whether it’s hiking a trail or walking neighborhoods in a new city — your footwear can make an enormous difference. That’s why I’m here to report on the best men’s and women’s travel shoes for walking all day.

I’m a minimalist and typically only take one or two pairs of shoes on the road. My ideal travel shoes are stylish, lightweight, and comfortable all day long. In the summer, I look for more breathable and lightweight shoes, and in winter, I crave warmth and durability.

I’ve worked at REI and traveled extensively in Europe for business and personal endeavors, so I know a thing or two about footwear that’s built for walking all day. I’m happy to share my findings on such brands as Allbirds, Lems, Xero, SeaVees, and Blundstone, as these companies make some truly stellar kicks.

This list includes sneakers, loafers, slip-ons, athletic shoes, and a few sandals that I’ve evaluated for comfort, style, packability, and other key factors.

Travel is back in a big way, so let’s dive headfirst into my list of the best men’s and women’s travel shoes money can buy.

  • Ultra-Lightweight & Packable Slip-Ons: Xero Sunrise

  • Minimalist Barefoot Sandals: Luna Oso Flaco
  • Classy Slide-On Sandals: Birkenstock Arizona
  • Unbreakable Flip Flops: Rainbow Double Layer
  • Hiking Sandals: Teva Universal
  • Considerations for Travel Shoes & Sandals
  • Final Thoughts: Best Travel Shoes for Men & Women

Best All-Around Allbirds Tree Runners

Allbirds Tree Runners

I’m a huge fan of the Allbirds Tree Runners. They come in a wide variety of colors, and you’ll love their breathability and packability. You’ll have no problem squishing them down flat and tying them to the side of your backpack or even stuffing them into the water bottle pocket.

I criss-crossed Europe in my Allbirds and washed them several times. They held up great! The best thing about Allbirds is how lightweight they are. They’re perfect for walking all day, thanks to the stretchy material that molds to your feet.

If you’re looking for responsibly sourced and comfortable all-day shoes, I can highly recommend the Allbirds.

Best Slip-Ons SeaVees Huntington Middie

SeaVees Huntington Middie comfortable travel slip-ons

Want a slightly more stylish option than the Allbirds? The SeaVees Huntington Middie is my favorite slip-on shoe for travel. The high top and suede material make them easy to dress up or down.

SeaVees are perfect travel companions. I love the simple, minimalistic look they bring to any outfit, so they look great day and night.

Plus, they’re super comfortable and easy to slip on and off. Quite a few online reviewers say SeaVees aren’t just a travel shoe but also a go-to everyday casual shoe.

Zero-Drop Barefoot Shoes Lems Primal Zen

Black and gray Lems brand barefoot men's shoe

I recommend the Lems Primal Zens for the zero-drop traveler because they’re lightweight, versatile, and minimalist, making them excellent travel shoes.

Travel is hard on the body, and some people prefer the benefits of a zero-drop shoe with the natural fit and feel that promotes healthy walking habits. In comparison, traditional shoes can produce an unnatural gait that increases the likelihood of injury.

These Lems can handle anything – from running, hiking, working out, and walking. Their versatility and durability make them perfect for a new adventure every day when traveling.

Zero-Drop Barefoot Boots Lems Boulder Vegan

Lems Boulder Vegan barefoot boots

Traveling in the fall or winter? I’d opt for Lems’ Boulder Vegan Boots. The neutral colors go with any outfit, and they pack down to a size of a puff jacket, making them an easy must-carry.

Lems is a vegan-friendly Colorado brand that strives to make responsibly produced and sustainable footwear. They use recycled products to create new materials and also partner with a non-profit.

The Lems cork footbed molds to your feet and has a wide toebox, so this zero-drop style is perfect for travelers who are on their feet all day. You have a choice of materials to help you find the one that best matches your travel needs.

All-Purpose Sneakers Reebok Classic

White Reebok Classic all-purpose sneakers

If you’re a fan of sneakers, the Reebok Classic offers excellent support and comes in an array of colors and styles.

The downside to these shoes is their limited packability and versatility. Compared to others on this list, the Reebok Classics don’t pack down as small and don’t dress up as easily for attending those special dinner events.

I love these Reeboks because they’re highly functional and will take you to your destination in comfy sneaker style.

Ultra-Lightweight & Packable Slip-Ons Xero Sunrise

Grey ultralight slip-ons for travel

The Xero Sunrise slip-ons are the lightest and most packable shoe on this list. Weighing in at a ridiculous 5.6 ounces each (men’s size medium), these were designed for those who want a comfortable shoe to slide into when it’s time to chill.

Though I don’t recommend climbing a mountain in these or donning them during a 30,000-step marathon around the city, I do think they’d work perfectly for a relaxing night on the town, strolling around a farmers market, or kicking your feet up by the pool.

From experience, I can tell you these are about as comfortable, cozy, and convenient as travel shoes come these days. For my more relaxed trips, they’ll make it into my travel bag every single time.

Trail Running Shoes Salomon Wander

Black Salomon Wander footwear for trail running and high-volume walking

The Salomon Wander is made for trail running but also works quite well as a travel shoe. They’re versatile for active travelers who like to walk, run, and hike all day, every day.

These shoes have ample cushion that makes long walks in the city easier on your knees, but they aren’t quite as stylish as some and don’t dress up as easily.

Salomon is a trusted and well-reviewed brand, and their Wander is a fine addition to their respected product line. If you spend all day on your feet, look no further.

Stylish Hiking Shoes Merrell Burnt Rock

Merrell Burnt Rock hiking shoes

I love the Merrell Burnt Rock because they’re so stylish. These are ideal for travelers who like to hit the trail occasionally but also know they’ll spend most of their time in the city.

The Burnt Rock comes in various colors, and their earth-toned palette makes them about as versatile of a shoe as you’ll find on this list. The mixture of suede and mesh make them breathable like a sneaker, but with style.

Flip the shoe over and you’ll find a beautiful rubber outsole for reliable traction, yet these don’t look like hiking shoes.

Tough Fitness Kicks GORUCK Ballistic Trainers

GORUCK Ballistic Trainers

Are you an active traveler who pushes most shoes to their limits? Or someone who will work out CrossFit-style before racing off to see the sights? Then I wholeheartedly recommend the GORUCK Ballistic Trainers.

The Ballistic Trainers are designed for the traveler who puts their shoes through hell. They’re extra supportive, with tough nylon uppers and durable triple compound rubber. These shoes are seriously durable.

Not only are they built to last, but also are stylish and versatile enough for any casual travel. They’re low-profile sneakers in neutral colors that can be paired with any casual clothing. The GORUCK Ballistic Trainers make for a perfect travel shoe for the always-on-the-move traveler.

Men’s Dress Shoes Florsheim Oxford

Florsheim Oxford men's dress footwear

For men who like to travel in style, the Florsheim Oxfords are ideal shoes for looking good all day and night. I recommend these for business commuters who need to balance professionalism with their active lifestyle.

The Oxfords have a very classic, minimalist style. Their Ortholite X-40 rebound foam soles deliver non-stop comfort no matter how long you’re on your feet.

The Florsheim Oxford is a quality dress shoe that won’t break your budget. Traveling for work is often tiring, but these shoes will cushion your feet and keep the spring in your step.

Women’s Dress Shoes Rothy’s The Point

Rothy’s The Point slip-on women's dress shoes

Rothy’s is a high-quality brand that’s known for transforming recycled plastic bottles into simple, stylish shoes. They have classic silhouettes and a variety of styles to match your personality.

Why have I included them on this list? Not only are they simple and packable, but they’re designed to be washed. I’ve had mine for years, and even after several washes, they look as good as new.

While they cost a bit more, the material quality and durability are well worth the price. For businesswomen on their feet all day, these are the stylish flats you’ve been wanting.

Slip-On Chelsea Boots Blundstone 550

Blundstone 550 leather slip-on chelsea boots

These are my go-to winter travel shoes — versatile and stylish slip-on Chelsea boots that are easy to love. Yes, they’re one of the more expensive options here, but well worth the investment.

If I was traveling and could only bring one pair of shoes, I’d bring these. I can work, hike, or walk all day in them with no problem. Compared to the Lems, the Blundstone 550 are more durable and rugged. They do get a bit hot in warmer climates, so consider the low cuts.

Caution: Blundstone is an Australian brand, and AU and US sizes differ slightly. For example, at REI the boot size on the box is AU sizing but the size selection tool on the website is US sizing. Make sure you’re ordering the right size.

Minimalist Barefoot Sandals Luna Oso Flaco Winged Edition

best travel shoes italy

If you’re traveling to a warm climate and have little need to dress up, I’d recommend the Luna Oso Flaco. In another post, I chose these as the top minimalist barefoot sandal , due to their many excellent qualities for active travelers on the go.

Weighing under one pound per pair, these are lightweight as well as super-compact. You’ll barely notice them in your suitcase or backpack.

The Oso Flaco sandals are the best zero-drop option for travelers who want to connect with the earth. Their lightweight and rugged sole makes them a great choice for your adventures.

Classy Slide-On Sandals Birkenstock Arizona

Birkenstock Arizona comfortable slide-on travel sandals

Our favorite versatile slide-on sandals are the Birkenstock Arizonas. These are a classic style that has transitioned from dorky to stylish over the years.

I sometimes travel in summer with friends who also wear these shoes. We all agree that they’re ultra-comfortable and perfect for all-day treks in the city. Whether you wake up in hostels or highrise hotels, these are reliable urban cruisers.

One caveat, however: on hot, sweaty days in these sandals, my feet sometimes get blisters, so I’ll usually opt for sneakers instead. Other than that, I love my Birkenstocks for traveling.

Unbreakable Flip-Flops Rainbow Double Layer

Rainbow Double Layer flip flops

Rainbows are flip-flops built for the long haul. But be sure to break these in before your trip. They may be uncomfortable at first, but once they mold to your feet, you’ll never want to take them off.

I know people who have worn these for years and swear by them. As with some of the other shoes on this list, these are quite flat and packable. The two shoes sandwiched together are about the thickness of a paperback book.

The Rainbow product guarantee covers all manufacturing defects for life, no matter how old. This lifetime replacement policy is another reason to love these traveler favorites.

Hiking Sandals Teva Universal

Teva Universal sandal for men and women

Want a more substantial and supportive sandal than the Bedrocks? I’d point you to the Teva Universal Sandal — versatile, classic, and more affordable.

These come in several neutral colors that simplify dress-up. I had a pair with copper-colored straps that paired easily with dresses I wore for a summer in Italy.

Teva Universals are lightweight and can be easily stowed. Save space by using their Velcro straps to fasten them to the outside of your backpack.

Criteria for Travel Shoes & Sandals

Shoes flipped upside down showing black soles with the Lems brand logo

This list reflects several key factors you should consider before packing your suitcase with travel shoes. Some may be more relevant than others, based on your travel needs.

No matter where you’re going, your shoes must always be comfortable, especially when the steps start to pile up. Treat your feet right by carefully considering the cushioning and breathability.

An ill-fitting pair of shoes can be distracting and even painful at times, so do your do diligence as you research shoes, read reviews, and reference the sizing guide to ensure you get the right fit.

Styling is important if a shoe is to be truly versatile. I lean more towards minimalist sneakers if I’ll be going to museums all day followed by a relaxing dinner at night. Save space in your suitcase by packing a style that complements as many of your outfits and activities as possible.

We’ve done our best to pick a wide array of shoes that will look good on anyone, and have strayed away from the dorky Rick Steves dad sneakers of the past. (Sorry, Rick.)

Laced vs. Slip-On

I often pack one pair of laced and one pair of slip-on shoes for ease of use and comfort (slip-ons) and athletic performance (laced). There are other styles to consider, too, like boots and sandals, so do your research and choose what’s best for you.

I usually wear my slip-ons for more leisurely activities and wear laced kicks for more high-intensity activities that call for more foot and ankle support.

Breathability

When you’re a high-intensity traveler who puts in a lot of steps , you need a set of footwear that’ll release the body heat that your feet produce. Otherwise, you’re looking at clammy, sweaty feet that are prone to blisters. Gross.

We did our best to pick breathable shoes that will keep your feet dry and fresh as you pile up the miles, so long as you match them up with a capable pair of travel or hiking socks .

Have you ever had a pair of cheap shoes crap out on you midway through a trip? I haven’t, but I can imagine it’d be quite the pain in the butt to replace shoes in a foreign land. I don’t have such problems with my footwear since I always pick travel shoes that are durable and built for the long haul.

To ensure you buy a pair of durable shoes, read reviews, keep a close eye on the materials used to produce them, and only buy well-reviewed products from trusted brands.

Packability

As a minimalist traveler, packability is one of my top priorities. I wear my bulkiest shoes on the airplane while packing my lighter and more compact pair, as well as my sandals.

Saving space in your minimalist travel pack is a top consideration when hitting the road, so pick shoes that’ll pack down small if you intend on traveling light .

Weight and packability go hand in hand. And lighter shoes are better when you’re carrying a weekend backpack, duffle, or suitcase. Shoes tend to be among the heaviest travel items we carry.

Noel, the founder of this website, is an ultralight backpacker who nerds out over the weight of each piece of gear in his backpack. Maybe you should too.

Affordability is another key factor. I want all of the factors listed above, but not at an unfair cost. Remember that your shoes must endure cobblestones, dirt roads, train stations, and the occasional hike. That’s why you don’t see any cheap Amazon knockoffs on this list.

We did our best to recommend an array of well-reviewed shoes across a wide range of budgets.

Which Travel Shoes Will You Lace Up?

Man with blue jeans and black boots walking down a cobblestone road at sunset

This has been my take on the best men’s and women’s travel shoes for all day walking. All of these shoes are stylish, comfortable, durable, lightweight and breathable. With any of these, your feet will thank you for making their next travel adventure as comfy as possible.

Don’t waste a single precious travel day looking for new shoes (or band-aids) because you chose the wrong footwear. This list consists of quality brands like Allbirds, Lems, Xero, Reebok, Blundstone, and others that you can rely on. Please share your experiences in the comments section.

I’ve traveled extensively in Europe wearing several of these shoes and hope my experiences will help you more comfortably navigate all those airports, train stations, and city streets that await you in the future. May all your travel adventures be low-impact, smooth sailing, and on-time!

For a trendy, vintage look, consider these classic Reeboks that our very own product analysts own and love. "I love the simple, classic look that’s easy to dress up or dow n ," says Senior Textiles Analyst, Emma Seymour. "I find them comfortable to wear, but they’re stiffer and offer less cushioning," she warns, so anyone with joint pain or sensitivity should be cautious before purchasing. Still, their goes-with-anything vibe will easily take you from planes, trains and automobiles to restaurants and bars.

We all know that classic sneakers don’t always make you look like a local (or pair well with your cute dinner outfit), so why not consider these trendy slip-ons from Rothy’s? They’re casual, super comfortable and require very little breaking in, according to our footwear experts. Better yet, they’re machine washable so they’ll look as good as new even after your trip.

A Family Travel Awards winner , these popular Allbirds will easily squeeze into any suitcase without adding much weight or taking up much precious space. Our editors swear by how comfortable they are , naming them a must-have for trips to European capitals or destinations that require a lot of walking. On top of their lightweight design, breathability and supportive cushioning, We love the Tree Runners' classic style that comes in a variety of colors.

Sneakers aren’t the only shoes that can be comfortable, we promise. For those looking for a stylish flat for chicer destinations, our fiber scientists turn to this super cute pair of travel shoes from Birdies. Perfect for evenings out to dinner or visits to museums, we're fond of the seven-layer footbed that conforms to your foot and were impressed by the shoe's support and softness. Plus, they’re available in a variety of prints, patterns, colors and even half sizes.

Featuring support that rivals some sneakers, Chacos are a go-to if you hate being stuck inside sneakers or you're heading to a warm destination but still want plenty of security. A 2024 Travel Awards Winner , testers were impressed not only by the sandals’ support but also by the shoe’s built-in traction that helps prevent slipping on a variety of surfaces . Our experts also appreciate that the straps are adjustable so you can customize the perfect fit and that they're offered in a range of colors and prints.

Whether you’re bringing a carry-on or checking your luggage, it’s best to stick with lightweight travel shoes. To keep your total weight to a minimum without sacrificing comfort, our pros suggest this versatile pair of sneakers from New Balance that weighs just 150 grams per shoe . A favorite among our pros, these travel shoes allow for freedom of movement thanks to their breathable, mesh design at the front and can be easily slipped on. They were also recommended by the podiatrists we worked with to put together our list of the best walking shoes .

Vionic shoes are popular among our Lab experts for their high-quality construction and supportive designs. We love this orthotic disguised as a fashionable sandal for all occasions, whether you want to wear them during daytime tours or out for drinks in the evening. We appreciate that the footbed is made of soft microfiber so you’re comfy at all times and that the style is available in various sizes, widths and shades.

If you like to work out while you’re on vacation or think the best way to discover a town is by foot, consider bringing the Brooks Ghost 15 along for the trip. This neutral sneaker can be used for running and walking and is a top choice for anyone seeking stability and control. Our testers loved the Ghost 15 for its cushioning, support and traction and raved about their comfort.

Birkenstocks have even around since 1744 for a reason, and our product analysts and editors swear by the brand’s shoes for those who suffer from foot pain, bunions or other common issues. The Arizona is one of the brand’s most iconic designs and will look stylish (and feel comfortable) as you make your way around a new city while letting your toes breathe. We appreciate the shoe’s durable construction, which features a supportive cork footbed and genuine leather straps . For an even lighter option that’s perfect for the pool, consider the Arizona EVA model that's made entirely from plastic.

HOKA Bondi 8

Bondi 8

Look around and you’ll probably see someone wearing HOKA sneakers . The brand's chunky sneaker style has a huge following. Though popular among runners, this French brand is also suitable for travel days thanks to its shoes' structure and support. To keep you on the move while walking through new cities (or if you’re someone with flat feet), our experts recommend the Bondi 8 for its plush cushioning and breathable mesh upper.

Crocs Classic Clogs

Classic Clogs

It’s hard to find shoes more lightweight, comfortable and convenient than Crocs, especially if you’re headed to a beach resort or plan to spend some time by the pool. Available in tons of fun colors and designs, our pros love how easy Crocs are to get on and off as well as their waterproof design. Just keep in mind that they lack the support needed for longer walks, so it’s best to keep them back at the hotel.

Merrell Moab 3

Moab 3

Heading to a national park this summer? These hiking shoes from Merrell are an absolute must. A top performer in Lab tests and a favorite among our testers, the Moab 3 is both super comfy and supportive. We love that they provide stability on rocky terrains and feature mesh panels to help keep your feet cool . Best of all, they’re on the lighter side for hiking shoes, so they won't weigh you down on your future adventures.

We love their lightweight construction, soft cushioning and all-leather design that's built to last. They may be the only pair of shoes you'll need for a casual weekend getaway.

Asgard Chelsea Boots

Chelsea Boots

Our Textiles Lab analysts rave about these small, lightweight waterproof booties that are perfect for a city break, whether you're heading to Seattle, London, Paris or another rainy destination. The waterproof design should keep your feet dry throughout your travels, and their value (under $40) is hard to beat. We also appreciate that they're available in other fun colors like red or yellow so you can match them to your raincoat .

Teva Universal Sandal

Universal Sandal

Not only are these fan-favorite Teva sandals extremely lightweight, but they’re super comfortable and perfect for all types of beachwear or water adventures . They’re available in a variety of colors and patterns, as well as a platform style for those who want a little added height. We also appreciate that they feature adjustable straps for a secure fit around your foot, whether you have wider or narrower feet. Plus, they pack down so small that they make great backpacking shoes.

Columbia Ice Maiden II

Ice Maiden II

Planning a trip to a snowy destination or hitting the ski slopes ? These snow boots from Columbia are a favorite among GH Institute analysts. Not only are they noticeably lighter and more flexible than many other snow boots, but this A mazon bestseller has a wide, roomy toe box so your feet never feel cramped. Testers found that the boots offer excellent traction, generous cushioning and just enough warmth and support.

OOFOS OOahh Slide

OOahh Slide

OOFOS are technically recovery shoes that aren’t meant to be worn all day, but you'll be grateful to slip them on at your hotel after a long day of getting your steps in . We also don't see the harm in wearing them during a long flight or by the pool (just rinse them off in the shower should they get dirty). Consumer testers rave about OOFOS' arch support and comfort, as well as how easy they are to slip on and off. Plus, they're so light that you likely won't notice any added weight in your suitcase.

Blundstone Classics Chelsea Boots

Classics Chelsea Boots

The Blundstone brand hails from Australia so you can count on these rugged shoes for your next outdoor adventure. Not only are these Chelsea boots durable, but they’re made of water-resistant leather so your feet stay dry no matter the weather . Testers found this model to be both stylish and super comfortable once broken in and appreciate the built-in pull tabs to make it easier to take the shoes on and off.

ECCO Yucatan Sport Sandal

Yucatan Sport Sandal

Heading to the Yucatan? Whether or not a trip to Mexico is in the books, our pros recommend these sandals for hikes, walks and outdoor activities. Those seeking arch support and stability will appreciate the sandal’s high-quality design and soft, EVA molded footbed , in addition to three adjustable straps. Our testers also claim that the sandals don’t cause blisters and have great traction on all types of terrain.

13 Comfy Shoe Styles Italians Actually Wear, According to a Local

One writer living in Italy shares the must-have styles she always spots on the Amalfi Coast, Lake Como, Cinque Terre, and beyond.

If you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation.

Travel + Leisure / Reese Herrington

Since moving to Italy and marrying my husband, I must admit, as a born and raised NYC girl, my style has evolved (I’ve become a little more outdoorsy, for one thing). And as a travel writer with a fashion background, I pride myself on always being dressed appropriately for the occasion, down to my shoes. One thing I’ve learned from the locals? Italians know that taking style and comfort into account is important above all.

That means your shoes can make or break an outfit — and a poor choice can leave you standing out like a tourist. If you truly want to dress like an Italian, I know just the locally loved styles that fit the bill for anything on your itinerary. From Birkenstock sandals to classic white sneakers , here are the 13 best comfy yet stylish shoes I see locals wearing on repeat that will have you fitting right in, whether you’re emulating the style of the Amalfi Coast, Cinque Terre, Lake Como, or beyond.

The Classic White Sneaker

First thing’s first: Italians love a versatile sneaker that’s comfy enough to wear trekking through cliffside Italian towns but also stylish enough to wear with a sundress while strolling through a city center. A classic white sneaker ticks all the boxes and is a local favorite (trust me, anything too technical like a running shoe would make you stand out as a tourist.)

Italian sneaker brand Superga is always a dependable, stylish bet; you’ll even see boat captains from Positano to Portofino sporting well-worn Supergas. This pair has a neutral rubber bottom that goes with everything and I can attest that it’s an excellent day walking shoe. I’d wear it to look Riviera fresh with linen shorts and a T-shirt. These shoes are so popular it can be hard to find them in stock, so Keds’ white canvas sneakers are a safe bet; plus, they offer a similar look for less.

The Birkenstock Walking Sandal

From the Amalfi Coast to Saint-Tropez, you may notice that Birkenstock sandals are local favorites in the summer. With their supportive cork footbed, these are extremely walking friendly and they have a slight lip that keeps you from stubbing your toe and keeps you slightly separated from the dusty ground. Currently, I’m riding the metallic silver trend wave and opting for the Birkenstock Arizona two-buckle sandal in a statement-making (yet extremely versatile) silver. This is a perfect summer style with a breezy white dress and chunky silver jewelry .

The Rustic Chic Espadrille

I’ve said it before , the espadrille is the perfect summer shoe. Not only was the jute bottom created to be breathable for ultimate comfort, but the shape and style are also timeless and very also very in line with the currently trending “rustic chic” aesthetic in Italy. Sure, espadrilles aren’t the lightest shoe, but I always have my Castaner espadrilles in tow on a vacation to anywhere in Southern Europe. The wedge makes them a great transition shoe from day to night; I even find them comfortable enough to wear exploring during the day!

Made in Spain, these J. Crew espadrilles in black or cream are a great option for espadrilles as well! Channel everyone from Meghan Markle to Rita Hayworth who are fans of the wedge lace up espadrilles in these neutral colors. Ugg makes an open-toe espadrille wedge sandal , or if you’re into the classic flat look, J.Crew also has walking-ready, comfy flat espadrilles , too.

The Ballet Flat

A great ballet flat is the perfect combo of style and function that will allow you to walk for kilometers on end through charming towns — I’m picturing these in Lake Como. Easy on the feet and reminiscent of classic glamour, the Everlane The Day Ballet Flat is a fan favorite, with one customer even saying they bought it for a trip to Italy and were able to wear them every day! In supple Italian leather, these ballet flats require no break-in period, so you can just pack them and go. The canvas is a fun fresh summer alternative and could sub in for your classic white sneaker. To get the look for a fraction of the price, try these best-selling $25 ballet flats that have more than 42,000 five-star ratings at Amazon, and pair them with a loose linen trouser.

The Sporty Sandal

I’ve worn these sporty Teva hiking sandals from Lake Braies ’ brilliant blue glacial waters to the shallow waters of Lake Trasimeno in Umbria, and they’ve definitely become popular with Italians in the past few years. I love that these are all-terrain — they mean serious business for all-day walking on trails or hiking the towns of the Amalfi or Cinque Terre; plus, they add a touch of cool to a dainty feminine outfit.

The multi-color Teva Hurricane XLT2 Sport provides a pop of personality and a fun ’90s throwback nostalgia. Not 100 percent convinced that you need a supremely sporty sandal, but like the sports sandal trend? Check out the Chloe x Teva logoed collaboration , as worn by style icon Katie Holmes. Currently, I’m eyeing the this pair from the Chloe x Teva collaboration .

The Hiking Sneaker

Backcountry

Maybe you’re planning to do some serious hiking during your vacation in Italy. Pro tip: I wouldn’t hike the more serious trails of the Dolomites in a hiking sandal; and while you can do it in a regular sneaker, your feet would love you more if you didn’t. I never underestimate the importance of a great waterproof hiking boot for more active travels like this, and these Adidas Terrex Free Hikers are a stylish, lightweight option for any suitcase.

The Flat Leather Slide

When packing for an Italian holiday, make sure to slip these simple but crucial flat leather shoes from French Sole in your bag; a beautifully handcrafted leather slide can go from exploring quaint towns during the day to a seaside dinner. I got flat leather slides years ago and they are well-worn and loved; now, I get them resoled every few years. Simple and elegant, they can always be thrown in a straw beach bag and look just as good with a swimsuit or cover-up as they do with a pair of trousers. The only caution I would issue with these flat leather sandals is to be wary of slick cobblestone on rainy days as it does not have a thicker rubber bottom with tread. To get the look for less (but with an even cushier sole with arch support), consider this gorgeous Cole Haan leather sandal .

The Jelly Water Shoe

Here’s something that people don’t really talk about. A lot of Italian beaches are rocky! And sometimes it’s a trek getting to that perfect beach spot away from the crowds. That’s when a perennial favorite from childhood comes in: the classic jelly. I actually bought my latest pair of jellies for a trip to the Dead Sea and ended up using them for summers in Sicily! They’re the perfect water shoe since they’re lightweight enough that you can even swim with them on. I went full blown nostalgia and got the silver glitter ones, like this Gap pair . Don’t worry about Italians making fun of you, like most things from childhood, the jelly is having a high-fashion resurgence here too, with these Prada versions hitting the runways and the streets of Milan to Rome this summer. Get the look for less with this Barbie pink Melissa version .

The Lace-up Sandal

A pair of lace-up sandals like these leather classics from Banana Republic are perfect for an Italian summer holiday; think Audrey Hepburn’s lace-up leather strap flats in the iconic film Roman Holiday . The slightly padded leather sole adds more comfort and the leather lace-up adds a little bit more pizzazz when paired with a midi skirt. Another alternative is this Aldo Sezan ankle strap pair in a beautiful paprika color or this gold Steve Madden pair that has a touch of that gladiator sandal style inspired by ancient Rome.

The Waterproof Beach Slide

I’m currently on my second pair of Freedom Moses rubber slides. I got them in the summer of 2021 and loved them so much I even got pairs for my mom and my Italian mother- and sister-in-law. Yes, there are similar leather styles, but let me clue you in to why my mother-in-law loves this shoe (and rightly so!): the Freedom Moses sandals are perfect for your beachside holiday as they can get wet and your foot can sweat but they won’t smell! In fact, Freedom Moses sandals are scented like milk and honey! They are the ultimate beach vacation shoe and you can wear them from day to evening on the Amalfi Coast.

The Breathable Loafer

One of the most-worn styles during my summers in Italy are leather perforated sandal loafers similar to these Tory Burch loafers , a chic summer alternative to traditional leather loafers. Easy to slip on, they carry me from Bergamo city streets to the waterfront of Lake Como and everywhere in between. I reach for these shoes especially at the start of the summer season because of their closed toe. With sand and heat, vacation pedicures can wear off pretty quickly, and these shoes are both stylish and save me the embarrassment of chipped nail polish.

Fisherman’s Sandal

Another great closed-toed sandal style is the fisherman’s sandal. Is it too on the nose to wear a fisherman’s sandal in fisherman’s villages? These Madewell Cari Fisherman sandals are lightweight with the brand’s signature Cloudlife Lite padding that makes you feel like you’re walking on a cloud. Vacation pedicure crisis averted again!

The Cool Heeled Mule

A few summers ago, I purchased these Aerosoles Entree mules , and they've been a spring and summer favorite since. Easy to slip in and out of, these mules are comfortable enough for a lakeside stroll and snug enough that they’ll stay on if you’re on a Vespa! Pair them with everything from jeans to dresses; they’re a good height at a little over two inches. Using the Aerosoles technology and Ortholite insole, these mules really feel like you’re walking on air. They’re also convenient for traveling on short flights in Europe and slip on and off through security. The red candy stripe style adds even more summer fun to this style.

What Do People Wear in Italy?

Fashion in Italy is the same as other parts of the world. There are a variety of Italian attire style preferences to reflect the tastes of different personalities.

With the popularity of athleisure, over the years Italian fashion along with that of other European countries , has become more “casual”, not to be confused with gym clothing.

However, casual or any other clothing in Italy generally tends to differ from some countries in the sense that people wear items that are fitted to their bodies. A tailored look is the true secret to the Italian everyday fashion observed by visitors.

As with most destinations, practical sense applies. Leave the beachwear for the beach because it doesn’t translate well to streetwear in a city. Unless you’re actually headed to the gym, you may want to consider not wearing gym attire.

While it’s not uncommon to wonder what do Italians wear , it’s also important to remember that the best clothing to pack on any trip is what makes you feel most comfortable, both physically and emotionally.

What’s important is that you choose clothing when you travel that makes you feel good when you look in the mirror because confidence is key to style in Italy and everywhere else.

Insiders do note that Italy’s clothing style may vary from the north to the south and between generations.

  • Rome and the south may be considered to be more traditional with local trends.
  • In Venice , the weather might dictate the clothing over trends, especially when it rains.
  • Milan and the north, locals may have a very fashionable and sometimes over-the-top style, particularly when it comes to fashion week.
  • Overly-revealing clothing isn’t recommended when entering religious buildings.

What are the best shoes for Italy?

One unexpected issue that many travelers discover once they get to Europe are the cobblestone streets. They’re BRUTAL when you’re on your feet sightseeing all day. Choose form and function over fashion!

While great to look at, stone streets aren’t always the easiest to walk on and can make for sore feet even if you don’t normally have discomfort. Depending on the city, these streets can also be hilly, slippery when wet, and uneven.

Popular shoe options include (click each item below for suggested styles):

  • Ankle Boots for spring and autumn
  • Ballet Flats and Loafers to dress up or for warm weather
  • Waterproof Boots for rain and snow
  • Comfortable Sightseeing shoes for year round visits
  • Cute Comfortable Summer Sandals

Popular cities like Venice or Rome are made for walking, so be sure to choose comfortable shoes . Consider waterproof leather boots for the colder months and simple, comfortable, canvas shoes for the warmer months.

Locals like to dine out with style and elegance so you may want to consider bringing some slightly dressier shoes if that suits your style. When deciding what to wear when traveling to Italy, avoid heels because they’ll leave you feeling uncomfortable.

What Should I Wear in Italy?

The most important factors in planning what you should and shouldn’t wear to Italy are your activities and the weather .

Always, always, always check the weather forecast before your trip. Nothing will ruin your trip faster than being unprepared with the wrong clothing for the weather.

Once you’ve researched the weather, you can focus on creating a capsule travel wardrobe , which should easily fit in a carryon suitcase with the help of packing cubes to compress your clothing.

Below you’ll find helpful seasonal clothing tips and suggested packing lists with capsule wardrobe ideas that you can use as a guideline to prepare for a trip to Italy:

What to Wear in Italy in Spring

What is the weather in italy in spring (march, april, may).

Italian spring is beautiful–you can spot flowers and green everywhere. Spring may be considered the best season to plan a trip to Italy, as the temperatures are more moderate and the crowds lighter when compared to summer.

Spring in Italy can be unpredictable. The temperatures can vary from chilly to warm and sometimes even hot, from a minimum of 15°C/59°F to a maximum of 28°C/82°F. When it rains, and during early morning hours, the temperature can go down to 10°C/50°F. Checking the weather forecast before any trip is always recommended.

What clothes should I wear in Italy in Spring?

With fluctuating weather in the months of spring, layers are an absolute must! For example, what to wear in Italy in May will be different from what to wear in Italy in April.

Always choose 10 to 15 items of clothing that can mix and match. This should include two outer layers that can be worn together to protect you from the elements.

Clothing should also be versatile and work for all of your trip activities. Choose fabrics appropriate for the weather. (See suggested spring Italy packing list below.)

Look for bright and light colors during this finicky season; when it’s sunny, it’s very warm. Jeans are a good choice or skirts in light fabrics.

Match your bottoms with a quality tee or pretty blouse, and don’t forget a sweater and light jacket for layering on cold days and evenings. Bring a waterproof outerwear item, such as a light trench coat, for unexpected rainstorms.

Choose one of these stylish travel raincoats for women to keep you dry!

Accessories always make an outfit but some may choose to avoid expensive jewelry or sunglasses. Consider bringing a sunhat for hot days.

What shoes should I wear in Italy in spring?

As with your clothes, plan your shoes based on the weather and your planned activities. Choose no more than two to three pairs of shoe in neutral colors that can mix and match with all your clothing. We suggest comfortable sightseeing shoes , activity shoes, and a second pair of sightseeing shoes if you’ll be experiencing mixed weather.

Make sure your sightseeing shoes are broken-in properly. Opt for a pair that is comfortable and you can wear it for hours without discomfort.

Popular sightseeing styles include sneakers ( Supergas tend to be a popular option) or waterproof shoes. Note that the best waterproof shoes are not made out of rubber; instead choose leather ankle boots , which are the best shoe option for travel to Europe in spring.

While not recommended for all day sightseeing, ballet flats , loafers , or boots can be good options should you want a dressier pair of shoes on your trip. Alternatively, bring closed toe wedges if you prefer a shoe with a heel.

What to Wear in Italy in Summer

What is the weather in italy in summer (june, july, august).

Summer in Italy is insanely hot: temperatures can reach 35°C/ 95°F or higher. Not only is the heat strong but the air can feel muggy and humid. Tropical-type showers may occur in some areas such as Venice . For example, what to wear in Italy in June will be pretty similar to your July and August wardrobe.

Be careful to protect yourself during the hottest hours of the day by wearing sunblock and a sun hat .

What clothes should I wear in Italy in summer?

When deciding how to dress in Italy in the summer, dress comfortably with loose and light clothes. Light dresses might be the most comfortable this time of year, particularly in places such as Rome where the heat can feel unbearable.

Skirts , cropped trousers , (dressy) shorts with a nice top or a dressy blouse and a hat will complete the look.

Choose light colored clothing to avoid scorching in the blaring heat. Cotton, linen , and rayon fabrics are best.

Make sure you’re not wearing revealing clothing when you visit religious sites. Covered shoulders and below the knee clothing is recommended but not enforced. While you may not be stopped from entering the Vatican or St Mark’s

Basilica, it’s respectful to follow local traditions. Opt for a midi or maxi dress below your knees and a light wrap that you can place around your shoulders if wearing a sleeveless top.

Planning to visit religious sites? Find out what to wear to the Vatican and other religious buildings!

Always choose ten-fifteen items of clothing that can mix and match. This should include two outer layers that can be worn together to protect you from the elements.

Clothing should also be versatile and work for all of your trip activities. (See suggested summer Italy packing list below.)

What to Wear in Italy in Fall

What is the weather in italy in fall (september, october, november).

Autumn does not differ much from spring. Temperatures fluctuate from 15°C/59°F to 24°C/75°F and it rains quite a lot, so what to wear in Italy in September will be different than what to wear in Italy in October. In the plains in the north of Italy, you can experience foggy days, which are quite fascinating in cities like Venice or Milan .

What clothes should I wear in Italy in fall?

In September and autumn, you should pack the same items mentioned in the spring section above. These two seasons are similar and the only variations may be an umbrella and trench coat . Layers are essential especially as the weather begins to cool.

The key colors of the season are brown, purple, gray, and black, but you can always choose lighter colors to provide relief from warmer weather.

When in doubt, plan a monochrome travel wardrobe consisting of mostly black, a stunning handbag, and silk printed scarf.

Clothing should also be versatile and work for all of your trip activities. Rather than Google search “dress Italy,” follow our guide on how to choose fabrics appropriate for the weather. (See suggested fall Italy packing list below.)

What to Wear in Italy in Winter

What is the weather in italy in winter (december, january, february).

As mentioned before, winters can be quite cold. In the north, it snows a lot and sometimes it’s difficult to move around the city without slipping. The south is warmer but it snows at least once a year. Temperatures range from 10°C/50°F down to -8°C/18°F. And where the climate is humid, it’s colder–you can feel it in your bones.

What clothes should I wear in Italy in winter?

Pack a pair of warm gloves , a thick scarf , and a hat . If you are planning to go to the north, I suggest a padded winter coat and layer of merino wool thermals , too.

In the south, you can take a winter coat or a quilted jacket. The rule in winter is to dress in layers as temperatures might change during the day, so pack some long-sleeve tops, warm sweaters , and cardigans .

A waterproof rain jacket can be useful, but I would suggest taking an umbrella, as it is more handy and fashionable.

The secret to packing light in winter is thermal underwear for women – these are a must!

What is the Best Luggage for Italy?

So the hard part’s out of the way; after much turmoil you’ve finally perfected your travel wardrobe and created a chic capsule collection – now it’s time to get packing! Which luggage will work best for you?

what-to-wear-in-italy

Travelpro Maxlite 5 19″ Softside Expandable Luggage | Delsey Paris Helium Aero Hardside Expandable Luggage

There are various things to consider when choosing the best luggage for Europe including a difference in carry on size, strict weight restrictions, mobility on the cobblestone streets, and long flights of stairs.

The best suitcase to have when traveling Italy can be a personal choice. Some prefer a hardside suitcase or softsuide suitcase , but it’s best to choose something between 19” to 20” for most European airlines, and ideally with four castors. The suitcase should be divided into two compartments (not just one big compartment) for easy packing. These are easy to travel with on bumpy terrain.

what-to-wear-in-italy

Tumi Voyageur Celina Laptop Backpack | Baggallini Avenue Tote Top Handle Bag

The best international carry on luggage can also entail your personal onboard item. The allowed personal item carry on size is generally 40cm x 30cm x 15cm. When choosing a personal item , ensure it has sufficient organizational compartments for your flight essentials, including an area for your devices, like a tablet or laptop.

For a European carry on size bag, a backpack is always a safe option. It’s also the perfect fit for those of us who prefer to travel hands-free.

what-to-wear-in-Italy

Compass Rose Compression Packing Cubes

Depending on how many days or weeks you’re traveling, you may want to use luggage organizers such as packing cubes , which allow optimum use of the space in your luggage, keeping everything organized and in place during your travels, and making the task of unpacking and repacking simple and stress-free.

As you’re headed to fashionable Europe, use an equally stylish carry-on , such as the Osprey Ozone , which is a personal favorite. Keep in mind that most of Europe’s budget airlines have a carry-on bag allowance of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm. Always check your airlines individual baggage rules and regulations in advance.

A last thing to remember about luggage is that moving from plane to train or bus means there will be moments you won’t be with your suitcase. A wise security measure is to use a luggage tracking device . The Apple Airtags are highly popular for iPhone users and can be monitored through your Find My app, while Android users swear by the Galaxy SmartTag . Another popular one is the TilePro luggage tracker which works with both iOS and Android.

When traveling to Italy, you’ll need some of the standard, essential toiletries, including:

  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Moisturizer (face and body)
  • Makeup (we recommend keeping it simple: mascara, concealer, and a lip tint that doubles as a blush)
  • Hair ties and bobby pins
  • Dry shampoo

Worried that all your toiletries, makeup, skincare, and hair styling tools won’t fit into your suitcase? Read these tips on how to travel size toiletries to learn how to make the most of limited space without sacrificing your routine!

We recommend you take the most important products in travel containers like these and try to either buy basics like shampoo and shower gel in Europe or use the items provided by hotels.

Also, consider your makeup–in many European cities, women opt for natural makeup focusing on a well groomed but not over-the-top appearance.

While a daily salon blow out isn’t necessary, be mindful of your hair and makeup. Find out if it’s necessary to bring a travel blow dryer here .

When choosing your styling tools, choose items that have dual voltage and bring along a travel adapter for all your electronics. Just make sure to add all these items to your backpacking packing list for Europe so you don’t forget them.

Check out our guide to toiletries for more tips!

What Should I NOT Pack for Italy?

One unexpected issue that many travelers discover once they get to Europe are the cobblestone streets.

In addition, there is an Italian dress code in churches and other religious centers. You should cover your shoulders with a shawl or scarf, and wear bottoms that cover your knees.

Are jeans appropriate to wear in Italy?

While Europeans tend to dress up more than Americans, you still can wear jeans in Italy. However, avoid acid wash and extremely distressed denim and opt for medium-dark blues and blacks. Black skinny jeans always look chic in Europe!

Are leggings okay to wear in Italy?

Some travelers love wearing leggings for comfort, but they’re often too casual looking as pants for Italy. If you’re a big fan of leggings, consider pairing a black pair with long tunics during the spring, or wearing them under dresses and skirts in fall and winter.

What are the Best Shoes to Wear in Italy?

Based on reader recommendations, we suggest tall boots for winter and wedges for summer; other styles can be used interchangeably throughout the year.

Depending on the weather, flat ankle boots , boat shoes, or driving mocs are other top recommendations amongst our readers. They’re classic options and make the perfect alternative to ballet flats , especially if you need a little more room for soft insoles.

Italy Travel Tips

Before you head on your tour of Italy , check out these frequently asked questions on traveling to Italy.

What’s the best time of year to visit Italy?

Italy is a wonderful destination to visit year round but many agree that Spring is the best time to visit Italy. You’ll experience less crowds and moderate weather in comparison to summer when it’s scorching hot and busy.

Note that some places close in August for the local vacation period.

Weather in Italy

As you plan your packing list for Italy, keep in mind that the north is normally cold in winter and warm and humid in summer. Cities located on a higher altitude are more windy and cold, but you can enjoy a summer heat, thanks to the sun.

The south is characterized for being warmer, year-round. In some areas, it doesn’t even snow! Rome and the south are very hot in the summer 35°C/95°F (May-September), but it can be enjoyable thanks to the sea breeze. Winters are warmer and not as cold, with better weather than in the north.

Never travel without checking the weather forecast as this will be your ultimate packing guide for Italy. Remember that each city will have its own weather pattern so check the forecast for all the destinations you plan to visit.

Use websites such as Accuweather or Holiday Weather for advanced forecasts and don’t forget to check the weather one week and three days before your trip as mother nature doesn’t run on a tight schedule.

Sunglasses are a must every season; the sun seemingly never stops shining on the Italian peninsula.

What are the best accommodations in Italy?

We love Airbnb for accommodation in Italy. Sign up here for a free $40 credit!

I prefer to book “the entire home” instead of opting for shared accommodation on Airbnb. Aside from safety, I also like to feel like I’m living in the destination. It’s a small taste of local life plus you get more amenities than you would at a hotel such as a kitchen and washing machine.

Read these Airbnb tips for more info!

If you prefer the convenience and comfort of a hotel room, I like using both Agoda.com and Hotels.com . Tip: Hotels.com gives you a free night for every ten nights you book!

For hostels, we recommend Hostelworld and Hostelbookers . Always read the reviews before booking to get the best idea if the hostel is right for you. Some are quiet and family friendly while others are known for their party atmosphere.

Not sure about staying at a hostel? Read this.

Transportation

For flights, I like booking through Travelocity or Cheapoair (whichever one’s cheapest). Although I prefer Travelocity because they have a 24 hour money back guarantee.

To maximize your vacation time, fly into the city where you’re starting your trip and out of the city where your trip ends. Many times it’s the same price and saves you from having to spend extra time and money to go back to where you started your trip.

How do I get around Italy?

Italy has several great transportation options that make it easy for you to get around Italy and hop from city to city. Train is one of the most popular options for traveling from one region to another. Seat61 is an excellent website offering extensive train travel tips for destinations around the world including Italy train travel.

Trenitalia operates three different high-speed rail options, Frecciabianca, Frecciargento, and Frecciarossa, and you can easily book tickets or look at schedules online at Trenitalia . You can also use ItaliaRail if booking for more than one person as the multiple booking option seems to give better rates than Trenitalia.

In Venice and when traveling to Sardinia or Sicily, you can take a water taxi or boat, which run regularly and are affordable.

You can also rent a car or vespa to travel within cities. Just keep in mind that the streets are very narrow and traffic can be intense, so if you’re not used to driving in Europe, you’re better off opting for a bus, metro, train, or boat.

Things to Do in Italy

Italy is one of the most amazing countries to visit because there are so many beautiful cities to see and sites to take in. Follow our recommendations before you travel to Italy .

What are the best sites in Italy to see?

  • Trevi Fountain
  • Leaning Tower of Pisa
  • St Mark’s Square
  • Florence Duomo
  • Amalfi Coast
  • Cinque Terre

Where’s the best shopping in Italy?

If you find you have left behind an essential, or need to add to add classic Italy clothes to your travel wardrobe, don’t panic. Italy is the cradle of fashion and all of the biggest brands are located in every city. Stores like H&M and Zara are highly fashionable, with a wide range of clothes.

Italian department stores such as Coin and La Rinascente can be handy when looking for quality items. You can also find designer outlet stores in major shopping destinations, too! Before shopping, see what others are wearing on the streets to capture Italian street fashion.

Safety is a big concern whenever you travel, and in busy, touristy areas like major cities in Italy, pickpocketing can be a common occurrence. Taking a few safety precautions can help you feel less stressed during your travels.

How can I stay safe while traveling in Italy?

Be cautious about where you stash your cash so you don’t fall prey to muggings and pickpocketing. Make your clothing theft-proof and choose items with strong zippers. Jeans are handy for this reason: you can put important items, like your wallet and phone, in your front pockets, where it’s very difficult for a wandering hand to snatch it. Add items like the Secret Bra Pocket and Underwear with Pockets to your packing list.

And be mindful of purse snatchers! They either slash the bottom of your bag so the content fall out or slash the strap. Wear your purse strap across your body and the zipper towards the front. For extra security, check out the “theft-proof” bags featured in this post about crossbody purses .

  • 6 Tools to Protect Your From Pickpockets in Europe

Remember, the safest place for your passport is locked in your accommodation. Carry a photocopy or other ID when you’re sightseeing or are out at night.

Read these tips on how to keep your passport safe when you travel!

Suggested Anti-Theft Accessories for Italy

  • Bra stash , neck pouch , or money belt with RFID protection
  • Anti-theft crossbody bag
  • Passport case
  • TSA-approved luggage lock
  • Clothing with hidden pockets (like underwear , tops , and scarves )

Key Takeaways:

  • In general day-to-day European style is more dressy than American style, but this does not mean business clothing. A nice blouse and well-tailored denim is a timeless uniform that can work in Italy just as well as any other part of Europe.
  • Ultimately, choose comfortable, classic clothing that will transcend trends so you can look back at the pictures from your trip with fond memories.
  • With shoes, always choose comfort over fashion as you’ll spend long hours on your feet – don’t forget to break them in!
  • Elevators are not prevalent in local accommodation; be prepared to lift your own luggage up many flights of stairs and steep cobblestone hills.
  • Avoid oversized, heavy luggage if you plan to use trains, buses, or budget flights as storage space is limited. You should be able to maneuver through train stations (and trains) with ease.
  • Pickpockets are prevalent in all tourist cities, be aware of your surroundings and be practical about your belongings.
  • ALWAYS check the weather before you travel.

This packing list was my EVERYTHING for my September 2021 4-week trip to Italy for which I successfully packed carryon only!! I followed these recommendations to a T and even purchased many of the recommended items (sandals, sneakers, tops, Anatomie pants) and they worked wonderfully!! Thank you for such comprehensive and helpful guide!!

Jenn D.

Thank you so much for this list!!! We are planning on going to Italy for 10 days this coming year and I am planning on just packing a carry-on!

Alex

Have an amazing time Jenn!

Dear Alex, I could really use your expert help! I’m a 60 year old fashion forward man, well traveled in Italy and typically for a month, and only take carry-on luggage. All of your advice to others above is spot on! My upcoming 2-month trip (mid-Mar to Mid-May’22 – half by car/half trains) is creating a clothing dilemma for me as I’m traveling from cold to warm, early spring to late spring, formal to informal and multi-country. Month 1: Milan-Verona-Bologna/Emilia Romagna region; Month 2: Menton FR-Aix-Bordeaux-Bilboa, SP-Barcelona-home/USA. I like to blend in and I’ve always been able to stay in the gray/black color scheme so everything goes with everything. But other than Milan/Verona, this trip feels more like lighter colors (mid-blues/blacks/whites) are in order. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Hi Jim, thank you for reaching out!

For tips to help you pack for the mixed weather, check out this guide: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-guide-to-packing-for-different-climates/

We always recommend that for any destination, so long as you’re dressed appropriately for the weather, the culture, and your planned activities, your aim should always be to dress for your personal comfort level vs trying to blend in. For help with your packing also check out this post: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/mens-carry-on-packing-list-for-europe/

Hope this helps. Have the most amazing time in Italy! ?

It will be me, my husband, mother in law and uncle and aunt in law travelling this year in late July 18 days. Super excited but it has been many years since I traveled in Europe. Your tips are so helpful and appreciated. We are also going to be on a 7 day cruise from Rome to Venice so we must pack for both

Any tips you can provide are appreciated. I have read through about 20 different articles you have on your site. SUPER helpful

I didn’t see a lot of mention on shorts. In places like sightseeing in Pompeii is it acceptable? On shorts are the shorter denim with the appearance of wear or tears appropriate?

Hi Samantha, thank you for reaching out! Our 10 step guide to Europe may be a good place to start planning your packing: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guides/10-step-packing-guide-italy/ For dressing appropriately for sightseeing, particularly when visiting churches, have a read of this: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-wear-to-the-vatican/ For the best advice, I would highly recommend that you join our TFG facebook group and post any questions, like wearing shorts around Pompeii, there: https://www.facebook.com/groups/travelfashiongirls/ Its a fabulous community of helpful female travelers that love to share their advice and travel tips and Italy is a popular destination so they will be able to help you with your questions. Deejay

We are going to Athens, Santorini start of September then the across to Italy for 3 weeks from 9th September. I have downloaded your packing list to help me get started. I closer to 60 so just trying to work out suitable clothing for both destinations. I think I will just need light clothing for Greece and most of Italy.

Hi Deejay, the best place to start planning your packing may be to have a look at our 10 step guide to Europe: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guide-europe/ Light clothes are fantastic especially if the weather will be particularly warm. The best tip is to monitor the forecast for your specific trip dates to ensure that you have the most appropriate clothing for the weather. Also have a look at our articles which are written for people of an older generation: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/over-40-fashion/ You may find some ideas and suggestions you like! Have the most incredible time on your trip!! 🙂

Jessica

Just came across your post and plan to go to Italy in spring 2019. Your packing list looks great. I am going for 12 days, how many days is your list for?

Hi Jessica, here is a helpful guide that explains more about how to use our packing lists: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/how-to-use-the-travel-fashion-girl-packing-lists-and-guides/ The vacation packing lists are for indefinite travel. Generally speaking, you can pack enough for one week then do laundry and/or replenish toiletries once a week for the duration of your trip. You can also adapt it as needed. Hope that helps. Have a wonderful trip!!

Rachel

A scarf was a MUST for me. I could throw it over my shoulders when visiting churches and then toss it in my bag afterwards.

Hi Rachel, thank you for sharing your travel essential for Italy with us! 🙂

Anne

I was just in Northern Italy last week. Polo shirts are very popular with Italian men. Guys 30 and under wear shorts but those older do not in the cities. Metallic or beaded sneakers were popular with women and in store windows.

Hi Anne, thank you so much for taking the time to share this with us! Hope you had an amazing trip to Italy! 🙂

Sylwia

I am going to Italy in April for the first time and your blog helps me a lot! It looks like my shopping won’t be too much of stress as Italian style is quite casual yet smart which I like. Besides that, I won’t stand out in the crowd! Thanks a lot! 🙂

Liz

Visiting Italy in May and basically fell in love with “Dress 1” on your list for spring packing, but the link isn’t right for SheIn and I can’t find it on their website. I’m hoping that doesn’t mean they’re not selling it! I have been looking for something relaxed and comfortable like that!

Hi Liz, thank you for reaching out! Dress 1 on the spring packing list is the Missufe Women’s Runched Casual Sundress which you can find here: https://amzn.to/2HTAVoK If you were referring to another dress, please let me know? Hope this helps. Have the most amazing trip to Italy! 🙂

I am off to Italy next summer for a foodie tour and your packing list will be a great help as i will be moving from place to place everyday.

This is an awesome website that I stumbled upon!!! My daughter and I will be taking a trip to Italy from July 10-20, 2017. We will be with a group of 64 from her school in Michigan, USA, and traveling from Milan to Capri, Italy. Six out of the ten nights we will be in a different city. Is there any advice you can give us so we get the most out of our packing and travels…What to bring, what not to bring…What types of clothing we will be most comfortable in? We are thinking a lot of maxi dresses/sundresses or skirts. What types of shoes for hiking and walking (plus they have to look stylish)? We know we will need a light cover for shoulders in holy places. We will be toting our luggage each day so I’d like to pack as little as I can and get the most out of our space and wardrobe. ANY advice you can give us would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Maureen Mansoor

Hi there. My sister and I are going to be in Italy from May 26 to June 12, 2017 starting in Venice then going to Florence, Rome and lastly Sorrento to take in the Amalfi Coast. Since this is kind of on the cusp of Spring and Summer we are unsure of what to take. Also I have read that shorts are not widely worn in Italy; what about a white denim skirt which is mid thigh? Also I am wondering if it is appropriate to wear distressed jeans i.e. with factory tears in the fabric in Italy? What about white denim pants or capris at that time of the year? Is it too early? Thanks so much for your help!!

I forgot to mention that we are two women in our 60’s.

Marian Fornieles

Very interesting article and very original. I went last weekend with my husband to Rome and this article was very useful!

Lauren W.

Your articles are helping me so much to “pack smart!” We are headed to Venice, Rome, and Florence in early March. Should I try to combine the winter and spring wardrobes for predicted weather in the 40-50 degree Fahrenheit range? Do you have any new items you would add to the Spring recommendations? Thanks!!

alex

Hi Lauren, the best way to plan is to keep an eye on the extended weather forecast closer to your trip. Here is a post that can offer you more tips: https://travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guides/10-step-packing-guide-italy/

After having been in Bologna for around 4 months now, since August (summer), I can’t say I’ve really paid attention to what people are wearing. Contrary to (probably popular) belief, I wouldn’t say Italians dress over-the-top / always-in-fashion — or if they have, I just didn’t notice it? I felt like everyone dresses pretty “normally”, i.e., I’ve never really had a problem with what I’ve worn. EXCEPT:

I do recall feeling a taaaaad out-of-place during the summer, with my sleeveless top and shorts (not even that short, mind you). I could totally tell that those who were in shorts were almost all tourists. (Then again, it was Ferragosto, which is basically a month-long holiday during August, so there weren’t many locals around to begin with.) But, at the same time, I think there were those of the younger (i.e., my) generation Italians who would wear shorts too. Although, if you want to visit any of the churches, I’m saying it now: No shorts / sleeveless. 😛

Thanks for the feedback Dominique! Very helpful! Thanks for reading!

Annie

Hi I am from the Caribbean and will be traveling to Venice for a business conference next week. What should I pack for this trip is it ok to pack business skirt suits?

Absolutely! Whatever makes you comfortable! Especially in Venice you can be as stylish or simple as you’d like! Wear what makes you feel great! Enjoy your trip!

Marlene Cavagnuolo

We are going to Naples, tour of Pompeii, Sorrento, Amalfi Coast, and Capri last week of April; Sicily, tours of Siracusa and Mt Etna (not hiking) first week of May. We are staying in four star hotels and using private drivers for transportation and tours. My questions: Jacket – leather and/or lined waterproof rain jacket? Shoes for evening – booties or chunky heeled sandals? Thanks!

It can be quite rainy in that region at that time of year, so if you choose a leather jacket, I would definitely pack an umbrella! And booties may be better for the temperature! Thanks for the comment!

Amy RC

This is so helpful! I’ve been stressing over what to wear in the fall. Thanks for covering all seasons!

Jill

I’m going to central Italy in 4 weeks, and this is very helpful. Shoes are the hardest thing to find! I can’t wear flats for lack of proper support, so I think I’ve finally found some clog-type shoes that are really comfy to wear for excursions – though not very pretty. Still looking for something light that doesn’t make me look dowdy. And something I can actually afford.

Glad we could help Jill! Sounds like an awesome trip! Enjoy!

mildred

Hello! Need advise on what to pack for honeymoon to Italy in November, thanks.

There are some great options in this post Mildred! Hope you found it helpful!

Hi Alex going to Sorrento on the 30th of September , should I follow summer packing ? .

The best thing would be to check the weather forecast prior to traveling in order to determine the corresponding clothing to bring. You might also like this article: https://travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-wear-in-sorrento/ Have a great trip!

Taylor

Hi there! I will be going to Florence, Venice, and Rome from December 23-Jan 3 and I am trying to figure out what shoes to bring. I am leaning towards booties/heels for night time and a pair of oxfords for day time exploring the cities, but I’m not sure if oxfords will be warm enough. Also I will be celebrating my 21st birthday while I am there and was wondering what people would usually where when going out for drinks at night?

Travel Fashion Girl

Hi Taylor, thanks for your question! The most important thing to remember is to find something that you feel comfortable in that makes you feel special for your birthday! I am actually going to post your question on our Facebook Page to get you more insight, so make sure to check back there so you don’t miss your questions! https://www.facebook.com/TravelFashionGirl

LOVE your posts! We’re traveling to Sorrento in mid October. I’ve planned an 8 day wardrobe around navy, white, red & gray. My shoe choices are strappy tan wedge sandals & top siders. Any other suggestions?

This sounds great 🙂 Nice work – For more ideas have a look at this post https://travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-wear-in-sorrento/

Thank you, these lists are so helpful!

You’re welcome 🙂 Glad you find them helpful!

Brittany

Is it still common in Italy (specifically, Venice or Cinque Terre) that restaurants don’t let you in without heels?

There are a few restaurants that have this rule, however many touristy places will let you in without heels. As with other places in Europe, comfortable shoes are always a must! Take a look at this article about shoes in Italy and what other readers think of heels http://bit.ly/28aU1LI

Faith

I’m leaving for Italy in a couple of days and will be there for a few weeks and would like to know if you recommend any good, yet fashionable, walking shoes. I’m not one who usually wears a canvas-type shoe and the one pair I do own no longer fits. Thank you!

Hi Faith 🙂 It depends what kind of activities you’ll be doing i.e. hiking or city walks but this guide could point you in the right direction – http://bit.ly/1rOuabK – Have a great time in Italy and good luck with the shoe hunt!

Julia

Absolutely awesome post. I only wish it came out sooner and that some items could be purchased from Canada

Hi Julia 🙂 Glad you liked the post! We’re posting daily on the site so keep checking back in to see if there is anything helpful to you 🙂

Verbana

I agree with another poster, shorts don’t belong on this list. You will never see Italians wear shorts unless they are children. Skirts, or capris.

Thanks for the feedback!

Thank you for the tips, I used this for packing for Italy in the March, it helped so much.

That’s awesome Demra! We’re happy to help 🙂

king

what about for men?what to wear? we will be there on the second week of april. thanks

Hi King, we do have some tips in this post for men in summer but unfortunately, we don’t offer too many tips for men since it’s a website for women. Here are a few more packing tips for Europe (for men): https://travelfashiongirl.com/mens-carry-on-packing-list-for-europe/

Claire

I going to an outdoor wedding in June and its in Sorrento. What should I wear.

Thank you Claire

Hi Claire! This article gives you good insight on the vibe of Sorrento: https://travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-wear-in-sorrento/ Plan to dress to impress 🙂

Kristina

Hi! I am going to Florence in mid March to visit friends studying abroad. What they have told me so far is that people in Florence dress in very neutral colors and kind of simple clothes. Is this true? I want to make sure I pack accordingly and don’t stand out as an American touristy looking person lol

Hi Kristina, sounds like an awesome study abroad experience. Europeans tend to dress in more classic styles choosing quality over quantity. The main difference is that women look great in even the most basic of outfit because they maintain a well-groomed appearance, wear tailored clothing that fits their body (not too big or too tight), and focus adding accents to a strong capsule wardrobe of versatile, neutral pieces. It’s not boring but more sophisticated – casual chic.

Take a look at these posts for more tips: https://travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guides/10-step-packing-guide-italy/ https://travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guides/10-step-packing-guide-to-live-or-work-abroad/

Have a great trip!

Cindi

I have not been to Italy in 15 years! There is no rule on having to wear dress/skirt or hair coverings when going in to churches any more ? Thx

I’ve been advised that you do still have to cover your shoulders and cover your knees when visiting a church.

jill

Hi im going to tuscany in october any help on what the weathef is likely to be and what to pack would be really helpful …im comfortable in flat pumps skinny jeans loose blouses silk scarfs and blazer will these be to warm any help appreciated x

Hi Jill, the best advice is to keep an eye on the weather on http://www.bbc.com/weather/ and for extended forecasts check out http://weather.com/

Your outfit sounds great so perhaps you can start off with that as a base and work around it: add a coat, scarf, and boots if the weather’s colder or don’t wear the blazer if it’s warm. Be prepared to layer during this time of year. These tips could also help: http://goo.gl/GjjCaY I’ll also post your question on our facebook page to get more feedback for you. https://www.facebook.com/TravelFashionGirl/ Hope this helps!

T. French

I haven’t been to Milan since 2104, but will be there next month. Sounds like skinny jeans are still the way to go, correct?

It doesn’t seem that they’re going anywhere any time soon 😉

Bushor

Hi.. We are planning to visit Italy (milan) in the Christmas holiday.. What clothes and shoes shall i bring specially we are from warm country and coming with my little kids.

Hi Bushor, you can find out best tips on packing for Italy here http://goo.gl/IaDMDl We don’t have a specific guide for Milan so I’ll also share your question on Facebook this weekend. Keep an eye out for replies from other readers: https://www.facebook.com/TravelFashionGirl/ Thanks for posting!

I was in Rome 2 weeks ago , and I have searched every website looking for a paticular Italian clothing store on ether Via Frattina ViaVia Borgognona Walking down either street from the Spanish steps it is on the left hand side of the street near the top . It is a high end store only found in Italy with women clothing. Do you happen to know the name of it?

thank you for your help.

So excited to finally go overseas and Italy has been my dream. Will be in Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan and even Lugano, Switzerland. Do you think it will be better to pack boots, sneakers, loafers or sandals? I’m not sure how cold my feet will be.

Hi there! Check out this guide for more tips: https://travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guides/10-step-packing-guide-italy/ The best thing would be to check weather.com before your trip to determine the weather forecast and best packing list to follow. Hope you have fun!

Valentina Wurth

Great informative article on what to wear. I would absolutely caution not to wear flip flops unless you’re at the beach since you’ll immediately stand out as a tourist. As a far as revealing clothing, just make sure you always have a light jacket and I would avoid short shorts. Italians are bit more modest in their dress but they always layer and accessories. As long at you throw on a light blazer and a scarf you’ll look great.

Diana

My husband and I are planning on spending a few weeks in Italy late Sept/early October, these lists are wonderful! Also, thanks for posting a list for men, that’s very helpful. If we are doing a lot of sightseeing, would flat-soled leather boots be appropriate? I don’t want to wear tennis shoes everyday. Amazing blog, having fun getting ideas for my shopping list!

You got it right! That seems to be the best way to go in Europe especially as the weather starts turning. Have fun!

Debbie

I had the same question about going to several cities from Venice to Rome leaving the first of May. The last time I was there in May I got cold at night and was wondering if I could wear my flat black “riding” boots. They are so comfy to walk in but I don’t want to look out of place. I am also taking ballet flats for warmer days. Should I leave the boots or take them?

Hi Debbie. Great question! Ballet flats, boots (ankle, mid, or tall), and one additional pair sound like just the right type of shoes for Italy. I’ll also post your question on Facebook too. Check out this post on what shoes to wear in Italy: https://travelfashiongirl.com/best-shoes-for-travel-to-italy-should-you-pack-your-heels/

So happy I found your website! My dream vacation has been Italy for almost 30 years and I’m finally getting the chance to go next end of March/beginning of April! I’ll be hitting Rome, Venice, Florence and Naples over a 17 day period and I don’t know if I should pack for Spring with some warmth for Winter? And what kind of overcoat or coverup would you recommend? Will it rain a lot then?

I have so many questions and I’m so excited!!

Thanks again! Julie

Hi Julie, congrats on your dream vacation becoming a reality! These are some tips from the TFG readers on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TravelFashionGirl/posts/670907509599587

Such a blessing that I found your blog! Going to Italy (Florence, Venice and Rome) for my 1 year wedding anniversary this upcoming December. I always overpack, and am really worried about fitting everything I need for 8 days in a carry-on luggage during the winter in Italy. Can I do it? Also, hearing about all the pickpocketing, what do you recommend for holding my money/cards, and my cell phone? Just trying to make sure I’m prepared! Thank you so much!

Love your website, follow you on instagram and facebook! 🙂 In two weeks I’m leaving for a 20 day trip that starts in Venice,Florence,Rome, Sicily (Palermo) and ends with four days in Paris. I tend to over pack always! (even for weekend trips!) Not sure if I should include more summer than Fall clothes? Thank you 🙂

Thank you Mimi for your compliments and following TFG 🙂 I’d say pack for Fall with a variety of clothing that you can layer. Always check the weather reports to your destinations first so you can plan as accurately as possible. I’ll also post your question on Facebook to get more feedback for you. Thanks for reading!

Cindy

Hi Alex, I didn’t see Mimi’s question on Facebook. Also, is it ok to wear a white capri in October in Italy? Thanks

Rachelle

Super helpful! I am leaving for Italy this week for a ten day trip (Rome, Venice, Florence, Sienna, Amalfi Coast) and I think I’ll lean more toward the summer wardrobe but will add a few fall pieces just incase! I wasn’t planning to pack a pair of heels (and I am a huge heel girl)…so now I am rethinking my no heel decision. Perhaps wedges can suffice?

Hi Rachelle, I’ll post your question on FB to see what everyone thinks 🙂 Thanks!

ricki

Thank you for “What to Wear in Italy” it helped so much 😉 My suit case is packed and ready for Rome next week! I love this Travel Blog!!!!!!

Thanks Ricki! Hope you have a great trip 🙂

Christina

Love that you put this together. Doing a 17 day tour of Italy starting mid-September – should I follow more of the summer or autumn list?

Maybe a bit of both since the weather will vary based on your location.

Thank you so much fo putting these lists together – super helpful in determining what’s acceptable by geography. Traveling to Italy mid-September for just over two weeks – should I be leaning more towards summer or autumn if our itinerary includes Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan and Como?

You should plan for both since the weather will vary based on your location – just plan to layer 🙂

Thank you so much for putting these together. I always struggle with what to pack based on culture and geography. Headed to Italy (Rome, Florence, Venice, Como and Milan) on the 10th of September – any packing suggestions? Should I be leaning more towards summer or autumn at that point?

Michelle

Incredibly stylish! Will there also be a Scotland series?

Yes, it’s a little delayed but it’s coming 🙂

Penny Sadler

Great job! Thank you for confirming too, in the south, don’t show too much skin. I often see tourists in short shorts, tank tops, too much skin. I don’t even pack shorts for the south. Can’t wait to return to Italy this fall!

Happy that Jacopo was able to give us info straight from the source 🙂

Clare

This could not have come at a better time for me! I’m packing for Italy as I write this! Might throw in an extra pair of heels…

Happy the timing was right 🙂

Best shoes for Italy trip

My wife and I are going to Italy in January and I'm trying to find a good pair of shoes for all the walking and that will fit in with the locals a little better. What do you suggest?

To be honest - at this late a date, anything that is well worn in. Buying something brand new could be asking for trouble at this point...… .

Well-broken in, and with good traction - lots of cobblestones.

What do you normally wear? Will you have any dressier evenings out? My husband has been bringing two pairs of shoes on our travels to Europe. Usually a pair of nicer looking sneakers (perhaps not white) and some casual light weight oxford looking shoe. This last trip he only brought sneakers and never felt out of place. Now, he has quite large feet (size 15) and we pack very light, so for him it pays to be quite conservative with the number of shoes he brings. If you have the room and aren't crazy about wearing sneakers 24/7, I would think a nice looking pair of rubber soled oxfords with good arch support would work.

Under the Tips and Trip Reports forum there is a category called Best Walking Shoes for Travel. Plenty of information there.

Wear whatever comfortable shoes you would normally use for much walking. White sneakers are worn by more than some in North America. Trying to pass as a local when you are not? Worry about important matters.

will fit in with the locals a little better.

Wear comfortable, practical shoes. You cannot disguise the fact you will be a tourist.

Ecco soft 7 sneakers. Stylish, comfortable, good grip on surfaces, lightweight. Took 2 pair for my 3 week trip to Italy in September and October and in December last year. They barely need any breaking in.

Thanks for the advice! I currently wear an Ecco shoe everyday. I looked at the Ecco Soft 7 that was referenced here and they look like they will do the trick. Great advice everyone. Although I'm not sure what was meant by the comment of "worry about the important things." I think worrying about a pair of shoes is pretty important. But, it doesn't matter.

Worry about important things while traveling and not about shoes in an attempt this will surely disguise yourself as a local. Go forth and enjoy....in comfortable shoes.

What makes them stand out: The iconic Vans Slip-Ons are easy to dress up or down for any occasion, making them a versatile option to toss in your carry-on . The uppers come in many different materials and designs, from classic black perforated leather to a floral textile design to a leopard canvas print. These slip-on shoes have supportive padded collars, rubber waffle outsoles and elastic side accents. You'll find a large range of sizes for both women and men.

I'm a big fan of the Vans Slip-On Shoes. I wore them for years on trips throughout Europe and on various weekend getaways. – Erin Evans

What makes them stand out: If you're headed somewhere warmer and want to give your feet space to breathe, opt for a sandal style. The ECCO Yucatan Sandal, with versions for women and men, uses various materials to make a supportive walking shoe. Cushioning is provided by the lightweight sole and EVA footbed; there's also a leather upper, neoprene lining and rubber outsole to give you a good grip. Color options range from a bright chili red or light blue to more neutral shades like gray or black.

What our contributors say:

These are my go-to sandals for summer trips to Europe, the Caribbean or any other destination. They are super lightweight and they're comfy right out of the box. I like the way the rubber bottoms grip any surface (including slick rocks), and I appreciate the added stability of the adjustable ankle straps, especially when navigating cobblestone streets or hiking trails. I've owned at least 15 pairs over the years (in nearly every color) and will continue to buy them as they are the only sandals I can wear all day with no fatigue. – Gwen Pratesi , Travel Contributor

Price: $140 or less

Cole Haan Loafers (women's) in gold against white background.

Courtesy of Cole Haan

What makes them stand out: If you prefer a fashionable loafer to a sneaker, especially for any business travel, Cole Haan's various loafer options are a great choice. The Women's ØriginalGrand Platform Venetian Loafers have an elevated platform wedge outsole with FlowerFoam (at least 25% dandelion rubber) and come in colors such as gold or black. For men, consider the classic Men's 4.ZERØGRAND Loafer, made with a TPU outsole and deep rubber flex grooves. The layers of foam in Cole Haan loafers can provide your feet with all-day comfort, and the uppers are made from stylish leather.

I love the blend of comfort and versatility in these loafers. They are comfortable for long days of exploring and work well on a variety of surfaces, from airports to cobblestone streets. I really appreciate that the style can be dressed up, paired with business attire for a work meeting or worn casual with jeans. – Rachael Hood , Senior Editor

Price: $220 or less

Allbirds Wool Runners (men's) in gray against white background.

Courtesy of Allbirds

What makes them stand out: Allbirds Wool Runners, designed for both men and women, get their name from the soft merino wool that the upper and heel lining are made from. The thermoregulating material is sustainably sourced using regenerative agriculture and carbon-reducing practices; it also makes for a cozy, itch-free fit around your foot. These lace-up sneakers are especially useful for cool weather vacations, but the similar Allbirds Tree Runners are a great lighter option for warm climates.

My Allbirds Wool Runners are the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned. They require zero breaking in and look great with a bunch of different outfits. I've worn them through multiple airports and to tour around big cities all day. They are like walking on a cloud, and I never have any foot pain! You can wear them with or without socks, and they are machine-washable, which is the cherry on top. – Nicola Wood , Senior Editor

Price: $98 or less

Merrell Moab 3 (men's) in olive against white background.

Courtesy of Merrell

What makes them stand out: These shoes have received plenty of accolades for being durable hiking shoes, especially because they're designed to handle rugged terrain. The Merrell Moab 3 has laces, webbing and a mesh lining all made from recycled materials. The rubber heel and toe cap are designed to protect your feet, while the outsole gives you traction and the Merrell Air Cushion technology absorbs impact. Extra ankle support provides stability when you're navigating uneven terrain. What's more, the contouring footbed offers maximum comfort and the leather on these shoes is gold-rated (which means it's been responsibly sourced; the designation is the highest rating from the Leather Working Group).

I can't emphasize enough how comfortable these shoes are. I've brought them on several trips, including a few weeks in New Zealand, and while I love them for hikes, I just as often find myself putting them on to go for a casual walk in the city. I also love that even though they're lace-up, I can pretty much always just slip them on without using my hands. – Catriona Kendall, Editor

Chacos Z/ Sandals (women's) in blue and black design against white background.

Courtesy of Chacos

What makes them stand out: You can't really go wrong with any pair of Chacos sandals, as they're all fairly similar and built to last. These versatile, durable sandals are perfect for adventure travel and water activities, as the rubber outsoles give you traction in various types of terrain and the contoured arch support cradles your feet.

Chacos have adjustable straps that wrap around your feet, but you can choose from different strap widths based on your preference. Some Chacos, such as the ZX/2 and Z/2 styles, have a toe loop for a bit more support, while the ZX/1 and Z/1 sandals do not have one. Another consideration is how much cushioning you want: Unlike the Classic options, the Cloud styles are equipped with cushioning.

I've had my pair of ZX/1 Cloud Chacos for years and they're my favorite hiking sandal. They're durable, comfortable and stylish, and they're especially handy when water-based activities are involved. For example, my Chacos were perfect for walking along the rocky bottoms of the cenotes (swimming holes) I explored on a recent trip to Mexico. – Leilani Osmundson , Senior Digital Producer

Price: $105 or less

Multiple parts of this shoe are made from recycled materials, and the American Podiatric Medical Association grants its Seal of Acceptance. You have your pick of myriad colors and sizes in both men's and women's.

HOKA shoes are the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned. They are great whether you're running a 10K or running around all day sightseeing on vacation. I've had several pairs, my favorite of which is the Women's Bondi 8. I love the fun colors, too! I also like supporting them because they intentionally work on reducing their environmental impact. – Sharael Kolberg , Travel Contributor

Brooks Ghost 15 (women's) in black and white against white background.

Courtesy of Brooks

What makes them stand out: These beloved running shoes are named for the director of product management at Brooks, who was known for going on nighttime runs, but they're also a great option for walking and sightseeing. The air mesh upper is made from recycled materials, while the midsole has a soft, lightweight cushioning. Sizes range from 5 to 13 for women and 7 to 15 for men. You can also choose from four width sizes between narrow and extra wide – not to mention dozens of color combinations.

These are running shoes but I wear them everywhere, from half-marathons to surviving Disney and Universal. Seriously, I wear them 90% of the time I step outside. – Leilani Osmundson

New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080 (men's) in black against white background.

Courtesy of New Balance

The men's sizing runs from 7 to 16, while women's sizes span 5 to 13. This shoe is breathable and supportive with an air mesh upper and a Fresh Foam X midsole. This shoe also has a Seal of Acceptance from the American Podiatric Medical Association because it promotes good foot health.

Your feet are cushioned by a Cloudfoam Comfort sockliner, and the rubber outsole gives you good traction. The synthetic leather upper is made partly from recycled materials as well. Choose from several different colors for the stripes on the sides of these white shoes.

I panic-bought these white sneakers to go with various outfits before a trip to Europe. Even though I had no time to break them in, they were instantly comfortable. These white sneakers lasted for miles as I walked all around London for days, and they matched well with everything. The exterior is easily wipeable whenever they get a little dirty. I couldn't believe how immediately comfortable they were and how I got no blisters or sore feet as I wore them on my trip. They're now one of my go-to everyday shoes as well for running errands. – Erin Evans

What makes them stand out: These simple sneakers are a staple for many travelers, as they come in various sizes, widths, colors and materials. Whether you choose white leather or gray suede, the Naturalizer Morrison Sneaker is a casual and practical lace-up shoe for women that's still fashionable. In addition to its nonslip outsole, the inside is designed to meet the contours of your feet while you're on the go.

I got them on a Thursday and wore them around New York City that entire weekend with no blisters or breaking in needed. So far they've held up well and are really comfy. – Elizabeth Von Tersch , Senior Editor

Travelers appreciate: Reviewers say the excellent design of these sneakers creates a cloud-like walking experience, with many calling the Edgewater Stretch the most comfortable shoe they've ever owned.

Frequently Asked Questions

No matter where in the world you want to go, your travels will likely involve some amount of walking as you explore new cities and natural wonders.

"The dirty little secret of travel, especially air travel, is the true amount of walking involved just getting to the destination," says board-certified podiatrist Ernest L. Isaacson, of Paragon Podiatry . "For instance, airports are cavernously large, and it's not unusual to walk a mile or more just to get to the gate after spending what can seem like an eternity in a long security line."

If you don't bring the right footwear, walking can become painful, limiting what you're able to do on your vacation.

"Investing in high-quality shoes ensures durability, support, and overall foot health during your travels," says Maggie Trevillion, founder of Callen Olive, a luxury leg and foot skincare brand, and podiatrist at Walk This Way Podiatry . "Quality shoes are designed to withstand the rigors of exploration, offering better cushioning, stability and traction. They can help prevent foot fatigue, blisters and other discomforts, allowing you to explore your destination with confidence and gusto."

Quality walking shoes are important for more than just your feet, too: "Wearing proper walking shoes with adequate cushioning and support helps to distribute the body's weight evenly, reducing the strain on our feet, ankles, knees and hips," according to Daniel Pledger, podiatrist and founder of ePodiatrists .

When weighing your options, Trevillion recommends looking for the following features:

  • Comfort , including cushioning and arch support
  • Breathable and durable material , with features like sturdy outsoles
  • Lightweight build , for easy packing
  • Traction , with rubber or multidirectional lug soles to give you a good grip
  • Versatility , so you can use one pair of shoes in different environments

Pledger emphasizes the importance of arch support in your walking shoes. "This helps to maintain the natural alignment of the foot and reduces the risk of arch-related problems like plantar fasciitis," he says. He also recommends a well-cushioned midsole to absorb the impact as you walk; a supportive heel counter for stability; and a flexible outsole, which will allow for natural foot movement.

Follow your instincts as you try on shoes. "The shoe that feels most comfortable in the store is probably the best shoe, whatever style that may be," Isaacson says. "And if it's not comfortable in the store it's not going to magically conform to the foot in the bag on the way home."

With so many shoe brands on the market, your choice will ultimately come down to personal preference and foot characteristics. There is no one shoe that will work for every foot.

Pledger's patients, for example, offer consistent positive feedback for shoes from New Balance, ECCO and Merrell. Even still, "I would caution against blindly following brand recommendations without trying on the shoes and assessing their fit and feel," Pledger says.

Trevillion also recommends ECCO and New Balance, adding that KEEN and Salomon also have great options for challenging terrain. These brands are all praised by travelers worldwide, but don't be discouraged if the shoes that work for others just don't fit your shoe preferences. At the end of the day, you're the one who has to wear them, so try out different options if you need to and discover what features suit you best.

When searching for your perfect walking shoe, look at the following:

  • Outsole: This is the bottom of the shoe that will have direct contact with the surface you are walking on. It should be flexible and shock-absorbing. A sturdier outsole will provide more stability for a variety of pavements.
  • Insole: This is the interior bottom of the shoe. You'll want a comfortable fabric to prevent your foot from rubbing, as well as cushioning and support.
  • Midsole: This is the area inside the shoe where the arch of your foot rests. Having a strong foundation here is key for foot alignment and proper support.
  • Upper: This refers to the fabric and construction of the portion of the shoe that will cover the top and sides of your foot. The fabric type will determine breathability, durability and if it will repel water.
  • Heel cup: This is the area where your heel sits inside the shoe. It should be secure for walking and may have additional cushioning for shock absorption.
