bintan weekend trip

  • Bandar Bentar Telani (BBT)
  • Tanjung Pinang
  • Bintan Lagoon
  • Take motion sickness pills if you are prone to nausea on moving vessels! The sea was rocky while we were making the voyage and a number of passengers ended up puking.
  • Choose BBT as arrival port rather than Tanjung Pinang as it will be a shorter journey. We did that even though Tanjung Pinang was actually closer to our resort.
  • Bring some food you might be able to snack on.
  • Or at least eat well before you even start your journey on the ferry. Being on moving vessels for 2 hours continuously is no joke.

Day 1- Explore the Resort

Day 2- Explore Bintan Island

  • If it’s just one or two of you, you could try to walk in a little further and see if you can get a smaller becah (like in picture above) that cost lesser. Might be a bit of a tight fit though.
  • Those becah we encountered near the boat docking area, trying to get customers fresh off the boat, quoted us about IDR 35, 000 - IDR 40, 000.

Bintan – Your Complete Guide To The Most Unique Weekend Gateway

“Wake up, Wake Up” she screamed “We are being swept away by the tide.”

I woke up real quick. It was complete darkness all around. The ground below us is shaking. The only sound we could hear is that of a strong wave. I was aghast. “Where are we? How did we come here?” and then Bintan hit us. Like a cool ocean breeze in a hot summer day, it settled everything. We came to senses. We calmed down.

Overwater cottage Bintan

When you think of spending an exotic night in an overwater bungalow, chances are you’re thinking of Maldives, Seychelles or Bora Bora. Yes, turquoise blue water through the bedroom window, private island, a slide from cottage into the sea, all sound dreamy and undoubtedly they are. But as a budget traveler, can we afford that? Once in a lifetime? Maybe yes, but is once enough? Certainly not!

Fortunately, South East Asia comes to your rescue. In less than 2 hours from Singapore, you can reach Bintan island, the largest island in Indonesia’s Riau Archipelago. Although mostly famous for world class sport tourism destination, crystal clear tranquil beaches, exotic resorts, giant Buddha statue and unique floating villages make Bintan a perfect comparatively pocket friendly beach destination. What makes it more special is the fact that you have the opportunity to book a night (or more) in an overwater bungalow at probably negligible price compared to Maldives or Bora Bora etc.

Bintan is not a traditional holiday gateway. I would not expect you to come here from somewhere outside Indonesia or Singapore. However, if you are already either in Singapore or Sumatra and if you can manage at least two spare days from your itinerary, then Bintan is a must stopover. No matter what type of traveler you are, this small island will definitely have something to offer you. Read along to find out how to reach, what to expect and what’s unique about Bintan.

First Sight of Bintan Laguna Resort

We had a special memory with Bintan. It’s the island where me and Annapurna spent our first night together (outside Home of course 🙂 ). I was serving a long term deputation at Singapore so post marriage, we were looking for a spot for a relaxing weekend. Although our main interest was an upcoming trip to  Cambodia  (Read about it  here ), I was looking for a quick weekend destination outside the mainland. It’s cheap. It’s nearby. It’s visa free. Pictures look dreamy and a fantastic overwater cottage at a steal deal. What could be a better way to start a new year?

Bintan Weekend Itinerary

As we visited Bintan on the New Year day (31/12/2016-01/01/2017), unfortunately some of the attractions were closed. So, that’s also a lesson learnt and make sure to read till the end to get to know about insider tips and tricks so that you can avoid unpleasant surprises. In this blog I am going to explain how you can reach this paradise, where to stay for the overwater cottage experience, top sights to explore and most importantly dos and don’ts.

How To Reach Bintan

Although it’s in Indonesia, Bintan is super close to the island nation Singapore. Most of the online articles you come across will definitely tell you how to reach Bintan from Singapore. However, you can easily reach Bintan from several points of Indonesia as well as Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Depending on which part of Bintan you want to visit and what is the type of vacation, the choice of port of arrival at Bintan depends. So, let me first explain what are the two major vacation types. Then depending on your point of Origin and port of destination, you can navigate to the suitable section.

Types of Vacation at Bintan:

  • Leisure Gateway at a Luxurious Private Beach Resort – Bintan has lots of beach resorts which are super close to the South China sea. All these resorts are luxurious and offer private beach to the guests. You have a grand choice starting from seaside pavilion, teepee style tent, resort perched on a cliff and many more which I will explain in the where to stay section. To reach these resorts, you need to arrive at Bandar Bentan Telani Ferry Terminal. All these resorts offer shuttle pick up and drop off (Mostly Complementary but ask your resort) to the ferry terminal. You would get chance to sit back, relax or indulge in some adventure activities including water sports but you will miss the beautiful Trikora beach (where you can witness three shades of Blue on a clear day). Also, you will be pretty limited to sight scenes in Bintan as well as the nearby islands.
  • Regular Accommodation with Lots of Sight Scenes – Although for tourists,  Bandar Bentan Telani  is the most popular Ferry terminal across the island, near the capital Tanjung Pinang, there is one more Ferry terminal named Sri Bintan Pura . Although ferry service to this terminal is limited, if you want to explore nearby islands or fishing village, this is the only terminal from where you can get connecting boats. Also, my personal favorite Trikora beach is easily accessible from this terminal. Although you can’t expect luxurious accommodations at Trikora, this is where you can get overwater cottages.

Apart from these two major Ferry terminals, Bintan also has an airport (Don’t rely on it) named Raja Haji Fisabilillah International Airport (Also known as Kijang ). Considering these 3 as the point of arrival at Bintan, let me now explain how you can reach these points and from which countries

From Malaysia:

The only port in Malaysia which serves direct ferry to Bintain is Johor Bahru. In 2 hours and 45 minutes, it reaches directly to Tanjung Pinang Sri Bintan Pura Ferry Terminal from The Zon – Stulang Laut International Ferry Terminal. The ferry operates 5 times a day and on every day of the week.

The first ferry from Johor Bahru departs at 9AM and the last one at 5:30PM. From Bintan Pura, the first ferry leaves at 7AM and the last one at 3:30PM. Please note that it’s not possible to reach Bandar Bentan Telani from Johor Bahru and there is no flight connection to Bintan from Malaysia. So, if you have a booking at a resort near Bandar Bentan Telani, inform them that you are arriving at Tanjung Pinang. Shuttle service will still be possible but most probably chargeable.

From Singapore:

Even though Bintan is in Indonesia, the easiest way to reach one of the luxurious resorts is from Singapore. It’s very easy to reach both Bandar Bentan Telani as well as Sri Bintan Pura directly. No matter where in Bintan you want to reach, the point of embarkation is Tanah Merah Ferry terminal. Please note: Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal ( TMFT ) and Tanah Merah MRT are not the same place. From the MRT station, bus no. 35 takes 15 minutes to reach the terminal. Alternatively, a shuttle bus runs between TMFT and Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 1 & 4.

A. Bandar Bentan Telani / Lagoi

As all famous resorts are easily accessible from this ferry terminal, the group of resorts have arranged some ferries run under the brand name Bintan Resort Ferries (BRF). The tickets can be booked directly at the counter at Ferry Terminal but to avoid unpleasant surprise, it’s always better to book your seat in advance at  this website .

The high-speed catamaran oragnized by BRF ferry ride only takes 60 minutes from TMFT to BBT and vice versa. To know the timetable, it’s better to refer to the official   Bintan Resorts Website here   but just to give you an idea, the first ferry from Singapore departs at 8:10AM and the last one at 9:00PM. From Bintan, it’s from 8:35AM to 8:15PM. The ferry service is very regular and on weekends, the frequency is more.

B. Sri Bintan Pura / Tanjung Pinang

Although Tanjung Pinang is the capital of Bintan and there are two beautiful islands nearby, it lacks luxurious resorts and looks more like a Busy town compared to a relaxing beach. Only Sindo Ferry and Wave Master operate direct and regular ferries to Sri Bintan Pura terminal. There are only two ferries a day from TMFT to Sri Bintan Pura and it takes 2 hours. We opted for  Sindo Ferry   and you can book your tickets from  here .

From Indonesia:

There are two places from where you can reach Bintan. First, Jakarta, the capital city and second the nearby Batam island. From Jakarta, the only option is to take a flight to Kijang. From Batam, there are numerous ferries running almost every fifteen minutes so there are plenty of choices.

A. From Jakarta

  • Sriwijaya Air: Daily Flight (Depart from Jakarta at 18.10 PM – Arrival at Tanjung Pinang at 19.35 PM) (Depart from Tanjung Pinang 07.00 AM – Jakarta 08.30 AM)
  •   Lion Air: Daily Flight (Depart from Jakarta at 13.10 PM – Arrival at Tanjung Pinang at 14.40 PM) (Depart from Tanjung Pinang at 03.20 PM – Arrival at Jakarta at 04.40 PM)
  • Garuda Air: Daily Flight (Depart from Jakarta at 05.20 AM – Arrival at Tanjung Pinang at 07.05 AM) (Depart from Tanjung Pinang at 07.45 PM – Arrival at Jakarta at 09.20 PM)

B. From Batam

From Morning 7AM to 6:30PM in the evening, ferries run very frequently from Punggur Ferry Terminal, Batam to Sri Bintan Pura Ferry Terminal, Tanjung Pinang. The journey time is about an hour. Ferry Operators like MV SENTOSA or MV BARUNA serve this route daily and tickets can be booked directly from counter at either side. It’s not necessary to book tickets in advance.

Yacht from Singapore to Bintan

There is also an option to hire private Yacht to reach Bintan from Singapore/Indonesia. We, here at Exploremoreinless repel expensive tourism unless absolutely necessary so I will not be sharing details here. But if you are interested, you can book one.

Bintan - Where To Stay

If you go by popular blogs, Bintan Island is called a resort island popular among Singaporeans which means accommodation is the most important factor here. If you ask me, the other attractions Bintan are pretty good but not so unique that you need to come from other places than Singapore/Batam/Johor. For me, it was the chance to stay at an overwater cottage at 20$(SGD) a night with a hope of a sunny day to enjoy tree shades of blue from the hotel. Below is how our experience was like straight from the resort.

Tri color water at Trikora Beach

North vs. East

We chose Trikora Beach at the East as our point of accommodation. The reason for this selection was its easy accessibility from Tanjung Pinang and proximity of other sight scenes nearby. Moreover, we never wanted to spend our weekend only in a luxurious hotel and did nothing else. However, if relaxing is your primary goal, below are some ( Not All ) state of the art accommodations at the North side near BBT Ferry Terminal. Keep in mind, your chance of sight scenes will be almost zero is you just spend the weekend. If there is one full day in your itinerary then it’s still possible but ask your hotel about transportation.

  • Angsana Bintan  – Private Beachfront resort offering Golf Course, Beach Soccer and a tropical Rainforest
  • Anmon Bintan  – Escape in the Dessert with Mediterranean cuisine
  • Doulos Phos: The Ship Hotel  – Brand new and super Unique (If I come back with more money, I will choose this one)
  • Indra Maya Pool Villa  – Ocean View Room with Infinity Pool
  • Club Med Bintan  – Award Winning Fitness and Wellness Resort

*All the above resorts are super expensive so I don’t recommend them for budget travelers

Angsana Bintan

Of course, these look luxurious but let me ask you why do you need to come to Bintan for this? If you are in Singapore/Johor for some long time and want to spend a luxurious weekend or a memorable beach wedding, then it makes sense. But if you are a nature and offbeat destination lover, and you are traveling Singapore from India/other countries/continents and have an extra day in your itinerary, do you prefer the above or the below? Decide, your accommodation and port of arrival accordingly.

Walkway Bintan Laguna Resort

We chose B intan Laguna Restaurant and Resort . Before arriving, we knew that the view would be fantastic. After arriving, we realized that we underestimated. The pictures truly don’t do any justice. Also, the food was super tasty. Compared to the price, the quantity and the quality both are too good. We arrived this place around 2:30PM and there was no other guest present in the restaurant but they offered us the full menu and food was freshly prepared. Yes, the staff at the restaurant didn’t understand English well but it’s manageable.

Wonderful Resort At Bintan Laguna

Luxury? No ! Unique? Yes!

Above you can see how the path from the restaurant to the resort looks like. At first, when we stepped in, it seemed a little shaky so we quickly put mobiles in our pocket and cameras in our bag. But after walking for one-two rounds, it’s become super thrilling.

The interior of the hotel is far from what you call as luxury. But, we never expected that. After all, we paid 20$ only. At night, the light inside was little dim. The fan was powerful to blow away tropical heat. The toilet was like Western style and the bed was cozy. It’s not super spacious but enough for two people with small luggage. The best part is as you come out of your room and sit outside on a chair. Literally you are over the Trikora beach. If you wish, you can directly jump into the water.

Beach Near Bintan Laguna Resort

If you don’t want to get wet, going to the beach takes less than 5 minutes of walk through the restaurant. At the entrance of the restaurant, there is a tap where you can wash away snads from your feet. If you need a quick shower without going into your room, that’s also possible in a common bathroom within the resorts. If you want a Spa treatment, just ask at the reception and they will point you to a dedicated overwater cottage for it.

What To Explore in Bintan

Some of you may already be familiar with the fact that Bintan is a paradise for adventure lovers. I will be sharing full details about what are the different kinds of adventure activities you can do in this island. But, before going to that, let me first share the places to visit for tourists seeking leisure vacation. One important for you to remember is that if you are interested in sight scenes, it’s better that you come in Tanjung Pinang Sri Bintan Pura terminal instead of BBT.

Nearby Islands

Once you come out of Sri Bintan Pura Ferry Terminal after clearing Immigration ( Check Indonesia Visa Eligibility here  – Indians have Visa Free Entry there), you will find many local taxi operators approaching you in aggressive manner although most of them are not English speaking. The only word we were hearing is Trikora. So, I think it’s pretty common for tourists taking accommodation in Trikora to reach there directly from the Ferry Terminal. However, we decided to visit the nearby islands first (We traveled with one backpack only) and then move to Trikora. Fortunately, we found a guy who arranged for two islands Boat trip with 1+ hour stop at each one and agreed to drop us to our  accommodation  at Trikora.

Pulau Penyengat

Visiting Pulau Penyengat is a journey back to the past. From Tanjung Pinang, you need to take a water taxi (Locally known as Pompong). We reached Bintan on 31st December and we got the Pompong all for ourselves at very nominal price so I don’t think there is ever a rush or queue. It takes around 15 minutes and the boat is so low, if you can bend a little, you can literally touch the water. As we were approaching the island, the striking Royal yellow Masjid Raya Sultan Riau,  the jewel of the island  was becoming more prominent.

View of Penyengat Island From Boat

Once inside the island,  Although it is possible to take a leisurely walk across the island, you can take motorized tri-cycle (locally known as Becak) to visit renowned sights. If you choose to walk, 3 hours in my opinion is enough. Except the Masjid (Mosque), There are places like Raja Hamida’s tomb and Fort Bukit Kursi (From where you can witness vast open South China Sea and some deserted Canon from the past) but after we visited the island, I would not recommend spending much time here for tourism.

Waiting At The Ferry of Pulau Penyengat

In my opinion, people looking for a religious gateway would find Pulau Penyengat a promising destination but for a regular  traveler,  it’s not a worth place to visit if you are in very tight schedule. The journey from Tanjung Pinang and the first glance of the island from the water is marvelous but we were little disappointed after spending a couple of hours in this island. Little reluctantly we boarded the Pompom again for our next destination, Senggarang.

Senggarang Fishing Village

The small Chinese fishing village was probably the most beloved part of our entire Bintan trip. When the Pompom anchored at the small jetty of Senggarang, it looked like time stood still in this serene island village. A long boardwalk from the jetty takes you to the picturesque village with an old World charm. As we entered Senggarang,  giant sculptures of Buddha greeted us from the distance.

Senggarang Jetty

As we walked past the boardwalk and the lush green landscape, we discovered a Chinese temple complex (Sun Te Kong Temple) with quite a few Shrines. From the narrative, We soon discovered that it is built by Chinese immigrants and they used to refer it as the Temple of Fire. Nearby you would find a temple dedicated to the God of Sea for protection of the villagers and another temple dedicated to Earth for better harvesting.

Apart from the big Buddha statues, there are many other sculptures of baby Buddha and Dragon and it’s a pure Joy to walk past those. We found many kids were running around those pretty enthusiastically. After spending a short time there, we moved towards the actual village sight.

Toilet at Senggarang

At Senggarang village, we walked past rows of Stilt wooden houses with residents practicing several hundreds years age old custom. In the narrow lane between rows of Stilt houses, we met running excited kids, cyclists, bikers and also curious eyes from the Window. Local residents park their bikes just in front of the wooden houses and everyone has boats parked on the floating breeze. On the open lane, we saw villagers doing their laundry and drying salted fishes, preparing crackers.

Beautiful Gate at Bintan Senggarang Village

We took lots and lots of photos. For a regular city-dwellers, it’s very hard to imagine staying at a place of this kind for the entire life. After roaming aimlessly for a while, we came to the very architecture nature herself has created over time. It was nothing but the Banyan Tree Temple, a miniature of the World Famous  Ta Phrom Temple  from the Angkor Thom of Cambodia.

Banyan Tree Temple Senggarang

I cannot stress enough on why you should visit Senggarang village in your trip to Bintan. You would find fantastic beaches and resorts in any part of the World and lets be honest, Bintan is not among the best. But, by freezing time, Senggarang has created an unique vibe with super friendly locals. Here is one photo from our trip where a family from Malaysia wanted to have a picture with us. Lovely, isn’t it?

People and Culture in Malaysia

Tourist Attraction within Mainland

After visiting these two small islands, we came back to Tanjung Pinang and headed straight to our resort at Trikora. We decided to spend the afternoon at the beach in front of our resort. It was a fantastic weather when we reached Bintan Laguna Resort and Restaurant and a perfect time to have our lunch too.

1. Vihara Avalokitesvara Graha

The next day we reserved a car from the resort who would take us to some sight scenes and eventually drop at the Ferry terminal. I don’t think you can avail public transport to reach there but the cost of hiring a car with driver is very affordable from the resort. It took around 30 minutes to reach to Vihara Avalokitesvara temple, also known as Guan Yin Temple, the home to one of the tallest statue of Buddha in entire South East Asia. The temple is open everyday from 10AM to 5PM.

Garden of Guan Yin Temple

Located on a Hill with dragon fruit plantation, this temple is more of a place to worship than a typical tourist spot. However, you can find great downhill view of the landscape below along with the decorated pillars all around. Specifically at the entrance, the wall arts and sculptures are truly marvelous.

Calm Face of Buddha

The main attraction for tourists is the large 16.8 metre tall Buddha Statue covered in 22 carat Gold. The artwork deserves an applaud and finishing is top notch. I only had a point and shoot back then but still I believe you can get the impression from the pictures below. Look how small we are compared to the Big Buddha.

You need to take off your shoes before you enter. Although I have not seen any instruction but I believe there are some dress restrictions (Like no Sleeveless and you need to wear dress covering at least your knees). You can meditate peacefully inside the temple. We saw hundreds of small Buddha statues which looked like are open for tourists to buy as a souvenir but unfortunately the monks present inside could not speak English. We took help of our cab driver and finally found out that they can only offer us some candles with holder but their is no price as such for that. He showed us the Donation Box and that’s all they expect.

Grand Buddha Statue Vihara Avolokiteswara Temple

Look at me standing in front of the huge Buddha statue. Look how small we are in front of the divine.

Outside Guan Yin Temple

Unfortunately we visited Bintan on a New Year day so other attractions were closed so after visiting this beautiful temple, we headed straight back to the Ferry terminal. But if you plan a visit to Tanjung Pinang, make sure to include 500 Lohan Temple in your itinerary. Ask your hotel specifically if this is open during your visit. If not, simply reschedule your itinerary.

2. 500 Lohan Temple

The manager at our resort said that Bintan follows Singapore Holiday Calendar and if a certain day is marked as Holiday in Singapore, the 500 Lohan temple remains closed for the day. Also, as Chinese New Year was approaching, some renovation was on-going. As per the official website, There is an Entry fee of 30,000 IDR and the temple is open everyday (Except Monday unless it’s a Public Holiday) from 7AM to 5PM but our experience says it remains closed in Public Holiday. Please let me know in the comment below which one is correct.

Bintan 500 Lohan Temple

Also known as Vihara Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, the temple features 500 life-sized Lohan stone statues with different facial expressions, each one unique and different from the next. The visitors enter the premises through a gate at the foot of a hill, then take a short climb uphill and you will be greeted by a sculpture of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva (I think very few place on the World has sculpture of Bodhisattva). After some more stairs, you would reach the garden to find 500 statues standing in a perfect order. Well, I can’t comment about how religious the place is but to me, it was a photographer’s paradise but unfortunately I missed it.

3. Santa Maria Cave

Let me start with a caution. Either cover yourself fully or Take a Mosquito Spray. Yes, it’s a Catholic Christian Church at the heart of Trikora Beach (Less than 20 minutes away) and it’s super peaceful and truly a hidden gem but if you come unprepared, you would definitely get stung, A LOT. Also, don’t get surprised if local drivers tell you that they have not heard the name of this place. Trust Google Map and you will reach there.

Santa Maria Cave Bintan

Also known as Grotto Santa Maria, this place is small and lovely and located on a hill. On Sunday 9AM, a Mass takes place and you can visit it for a different types of experience. As the place is not at all maintained, you won’t find any signpost on how to visit this place. Once you reach the cave, there a total of 14 stations and you need to climb a little uphill. Each station has a story to tell with a unique statue and you can only complete the story when you reach the top. A nice adventure. Isn’t it?

Adventure Activities: Bintan

Beyond the white sandy beaches and blue shades, the small island of Bintan offers an extensive selection of action-packed activities – on land, water, and even in the air. Whether you are a veteran adrenaline junkie or simply a novice thrill-seeker, a lifetime experience awaits! On the island of Bintan, there is a 338-hectare wtaerfront resort city called Treasure Bay Bintan housing South East Asia’s first  Crystal Lagoon . I would recommend to visit their  Official Website  to get a list of all activities and latest COVID-19 restrictions.

1. Jetovator

Yes, You can fly ! That too, over water. All Alone!

Jetovator Bintan

Jetovator is probably the most Adrenaline rushing water sports and once in a lifetime experience. Before your ride, trained staffs will give you proper instruction and safety gear and you are all set to fly all alone. Just a word of caution, an immense thrust pumps you high above the water so make sure you are physically fit enough to get lifted to mid air without getting nervous.

2. ATV Ride

It’s your chance to get dirty. Within Treasure Bay Bintan, you can take a forty-minute adventure filled, super muddy and bumpy ride through the off beat road that takes you to a different horizon of tropical landscape inside Bintan. Jump on an ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) or UTV (Utility Terrain Vehicle) and take on a challenging trek through the jungle.

ATV Ride Bintan

Below are some important points for you to take note while you are thinking of trying out ATV or UTV in Bintan

  • You need to ride ATV alone (Not even with your partner). If both of you want to ride in the same vehicle, take a UTV.
  • Safety Helmet and Shoes are mandatory.
  • You are not allowed if you are under the influence of Alcohol or medication. However, for the latter, if you can provide fit certificate, then sometimes they consider.

3. Mangrove Kayaking

If Kayaking is in your mind, I would suggest you to head towards Pengudang beach and take the service from  this company . Here, not only will you have a relaxed water sport adventure but also you would get an equivalent vibe from Thailand or Philippines with limestone rocks all around. With a very affordable price, they provide local guide, lunch, kayaking equipment and return transfer.

Mangrove Kayaking Bintan

Ubin Rocks Kayaking is a half day adventure (So make sure you stay at least two nights in Bintan). If you have kids, they need to be at least 6 years to take part in this Kayaking. Also, you at least need to be paying for two persons. Generally the tour starts early in the morning (7:30AM) but if you have an alternate preference, you can discuss with the operator in advance.

4. Parasailing

If ATV or Jetovator look too much for you, you can consider parasailing as it’s not an extreme water sports. It could be the perfect outdoor activity for you mainly because it’s completely effortless. Along the same line, parasailing gives you a unique way to get a bird’s eye view of the ocean scenery and tropical forests of the region. There is no better way to witness the dramatic coastline of Bintan.

Parasailing at Bintan

Parasailing is an experience that is both thrilling and peaceful as you are lifted into the air by a parachute that is harnessed to a parasailing boat. But keep in mind, parasailing is probably the most popular activity on the island so after you have booked your resort, ask them about procedure to reserve your spot to avoid any disappointment after your arrival in Bintan.

Useful Insider Tips For Bintan

Undoubtedly Bintan is an exquisite weekend gateway specifically from Johor or Singapore but unfortunately the island has not yet got much online presence. So, here are few very important points for you to consider while planning your trip

  • Although Bintan is an island of Indonesia, it follows Singapore Holiday Calendar. At least in our visit, one attraction was closed due to Holiday in Singapore. So please cross check if attractions are open during your visit. Ask your accommodation in advance and then pick your date.
  • Bintan’s most advertisement focuses on the North side but Trikora is the best Beach in terms of color variation on a Sunny day. Period. It’s also the cheapest place in the island to stay. As it lacks water sports activities, it does not get enough attention but it’s your best bet if you are after a relaxing gateway with ample opportunity of photography.
  • If you are travelling from Singapore via Ferry, you need to pay additional SGD 7 per person during departure only. If you leave Bintan from Tanjung Pinang, you need to pay Rp 60,000 per person (40,000 for Indonesian) as a part tax.
  • I preferred to use SGD instead of IDR for transport because I got better value out of it. For small items like Souvenir or fruits/drinks from street vendor, you can use Indonesian currency. However, everyone accepts Singapore Dollar so it’s not a must thing to change currency.

If you are based in Singapore and thinking where to go on an extended Weekend, Bintan could be a fantastic choice because it’s cheap, it’s nearby and it’s not overly crowded. If you try to visit Kuala Lumpur or Genting or Melaka over a long weekend, you would have to spend at least a couple of hours in each immigration area so only 4 hours will be required to cross the border via road. Bintan, on the other hand is much hassle free and probably will offer you more in less.

Unexplored Bintan

There are many places in the World where tourism is an absolute pleasure but unfortunately they never get the attention they deserve. I was lucky to remain close to it and took the right decision to choose it over some other much hyped nearby destinations. After our visit, many colleagues of mine took my suggestion and all of them were equally fascinated by the beauty and diversity of this small island.

To all who are still reading this, many thanks to you for spending your time to show your interest about this offbeat destination. If you have grown interest already and have some questions, please feel free to ask me and I will try to respond as soon as possible. Have you already visited Bintan and want to share some thoughts? Please use the comment box. Any suggestions? feedbacks? Anything I said incorrectly? Please let me know so that I can cross check and correct it. Till then “ Selamat tinggal “.

Best Kept Secrets of the Riau Islands: Guide to Bintan

Bintan, an Indonesian island offbeat to the world and popular to nearby locals, makes for a real getaway from touristy destinations in SE Asia.

It’s no more than a 2-hour ferry ride south of Singapore. Unlike its industrial hub neighbor – Batam Riau – the pace of life is noticeably slow here. When I visited, it felt more or less like a countryside visit.

Things to do in bintan

Most people go to Bintan to relax at its sparkly serene beaches. Apart from relaxing and cafes, honestly, there isn’t much to do here. But I found those few places to visit worthy to experience.

So here goes my list of things to do in Bintan ! In this article, I’ve also added itinerary tips and handpicked recommendations to make the best of your trip.

Is Bintan Worth Visiting?

Yes, Bintan is definitely worth visiting! Apart from the fantastic beaches, it’s the low-key air with less traffic, serene temples, and homely accommodations that make Bintan all worth it.

Most shores are also backwaters in Indonesia making for calm waters as well. Also, it’s the unique local experiences close to Bintan like the Senggarang water village that make Bintan attractive.

How to Get to Bintan?

Ferry is the most convenient route to get to Bintan. From Singapore (Tanah Merah terminal), take the Bintan Resorts Lagoi Ferry to the Bandar Bentan Telani Ferry Terminal on the North of Bintan.

It takes 1 hour and 30 minutes from Tanah Merah depending on the route and costs SGD 90 for a round trip (weekends are higher).

I recommend booking the ferry tickets online using Klook.com for better-discounted deals and earning points to save on other Bintan day trip packages. Grab your Bintan tickets today!

From Batam Riau , get on the ferry from Punggur Ferry Terminal to Sri Bintan Pura Ferry Terminal in Tanjung Pinang. Another adventurous alternative (I recommend it) is the speedboat service that takes you to Tanjung Uban Domestic ferry terminal.

Keep in mind, that Tanjung Pinang is Bintan’s capital. Tanjung Uban is a rural side with more village-like homestays rather than resorts. I’ve been to both, but I preferred Tanjung Uban. It’s less touristy.

Which is better, Batam or Bintan?

Batam and Bintan both have amazing beaches and resorts. But Bintan has way more options to pick from and has more attractions. Thus Bintan is a better pick!

On a day’s trip to attractions around Batam, there isn’t much to explore in Batam aside from its malls, shopping complexes, and eateries (Read my Batam blog post ). However, Bintan has plenty of places to check out and also gives more of a town-life experience. Batam, on the other hand, is a city.

To those who love food-hopping or have a larger variety of options, I recommend Batam’s restaurants .

Is Bintan expensive? Compared to Batam, Bintan is around the same range itinerary. On both islands, transport gets expensive as public transportation isn’t very reliable.

Guide to Picking Bintan Tour Packages

As mentioned earlier, transportation in Bintan (taxis and private charters) gets expensive. So when you’re here, I’d recommend picking day tours to Bintan’s attractions to save more.

You see Tanjung Pinang is easy to get around for local eateries and shopping. But places like the Blue Lake, Mangrove River, and 500 Lohan Temple are far from the city and simply cost too much for taxis.

Rental vehicles are one option. Another great option is booking these day trip packages. I recommend Klook.com to book Bintan Tour Packages as they’re acquainted and offer budget-friendly packages.

I handpicked day-trip packages that I believe are worth the penny:

Top Things to Do in Bintan

Some things like the Blue Lake and sitting by beaches are must-visits. But I’ve compiled this list of things to do in Bintan based on experience. Feel free to drop them in the comfort of your itinerary.

But it’d totally be worth it if you could make it to most if not all of them!

Explore the Blue Lake and its Dunes!

Never having looked up at the blue lake prior, the first time I saw the blue lake – it was surreal. The pictures are unbelievable, but visiting is even more. And fun fact, this is NOT man-made! …well, kind of.

This ‘lake’ was once a mining site and the residue minerals made the waters here bright blue. While harmless, they however don’t let visitors swim here. But even straining my eyes, I couldn’t see the bottom through thick blue. So that was convincing enough not to jump.

Another popular thing is the ‘desert’ here. It isn’t a real desert and another outcome of the mining spot but it made for picturesque dunes. Oh, and ATVs are pretty popular here.

Use Klook.com to book all Bintan attractions in one place. It saves you lots! Book your Blue Lake round trip today:

When we asked for pricing, they were quite expensive. Anyway, the blue lake amidst the dunes is quite a sight. But there’s this small cute boat on the lake that makes it cooler (we paid for a ride, it was a little boring).

Go on a Bintan Mangrove River Tour

The Bintan Mangrove River tour is a 60-minute boat ride through the Sebung River. This forest lies in Northern Bintan and an hour away from Tanjung Pinang, thus making for an authentic nature experience.

With the silent mangroves rich with living habitats, the animate beings are super-noticeable here. Nevertheless, I highly recommend taking the 7:00 / 8:00 pm slot – the Mangrove River is famous for its pretty evening fireflies.

The night sky stars bright due to non-existent city-light pollution here is just another cherry on top! The night ride is simply wonderful.

Speaking of the tour, most agencies offer pickup and drop from Tanjung Pinang, so you needn’t worry about the transport hustle here.

Visit the Vihara Avalokitesvara Graha

This is a Chinese Buddhist Temple close to Tanjung Pinang, Bintan. One reason I urge you to visit is because of the wondrous size of the garden areas, the temple itself, and the statue of Dewi Kuan Yin.

The enormous space is one thing. But the expensive build of the temple’s pillars, paintings, wall carvings, and dozens of marble statues are worth exploring. Another fun fact – the Dewi Kuan Yin statue at the main temple is 16.8 meters high and made of 40-ton copper. It’s further plated with 22-karat gold.

I remember visiting as a kid and visiting it again in 2023, and it looked exactly the same! It tells a lot about the preservation and maintenance of the temple over the years.

Stay by Offbeat Shores of Bintan

This is my favorite part about Bintan – staying at a homestay-style accommodation in the offbeat parts. While most people prefer resorts with white sand beaches, pools, and villas, I recommend staying one night in a seaside homestay.

I stayed at one in Tanjung Uban and loved it! The seashore didn’t have white sand but these clear backwaters were filled with seashells, corals, and a variety of fish. The evening orange sky with gentle waves lapping against the shore was magical.

I had a little extra adventure when I noticed local farmers holding out nets in their hands at midnight. They walked far into the low tide with their pant rolled up and torches in their hands – they were catching crabs!

Take a boat ride to Senggarang Island, a Water Village

The Senggarang island is also called the floating village and is well-known for its historic bits in Bintan. This small fishing village that lies on the waters saw its first settlements by early Chinese immigrants. Thus it happens to have the oldest temple here in Bintan.

Explore the daily lives of local farmers and fishermen and strolling narrow concrete and wooden boardwalks that connect stilt houses. It reminded me of Abang Island village in Batam. Two key attractions here are the Banyan Tree temple (yes, the tree literally hugs around the tiny temple), and the Vihara Dharma Sasana built by the early settlers.

I recommend taking along a guide to explain about Senggarang. This tour is a boat ride away from Bintan and it’s best to book a package tour to save individual costs.

Relax at Nirwana Resort Beach

Bintan Guide – The Nirwana Resort is only an option among the many 5-star hotels in Bintan. In this Bintan blog, I handpicked resorts and spas that people look forward to most along with their reviews. Some offer great pools and others offer canopy-style accommodation:

Nirwana Resort Hotel

bintan weekend trip

Nirwana Resort is a 4-star luxury hotel with all-rounder facilities like amazing spa and fitness centers. It also has a magnificent infinity pool in full view straight from the rooms! It also offers a variety of continental cuisines.

Banyan Tree Bintan

bintan weekend trip

Though pricey, the Banyan Tree Resort in Lagoi, Bintan offers the best seaside views through its Balinese-style villas. The accommodation seamlessly blends in nature elements with its luxury facilities. Added to it, it boasts its world-class spa and an outdoor pool.

Anmon Resort Bintan

bintan weekend trip

Anmon Resort stands unique with its tent (canopy) rooms while being equipped with luxury amenities – thus considered a 4-star hotel. The unique style of rooms and its mix with elegant bathrooms is worth the stay.

Natra Bintan/ Treasure Bay Resort

bintan weekend trip

Natra Bintan is no doubt a treasure with its outdoor pool considered to be the largest in Southeast Asia. It’s so large that I thought it was the sea at first! Its impressive canopy-style accommodation comes with bathrooms well-blended with their gardens.

Check out the 500 Lohan Temple

Bintan Guide : The 500 Lohan Temple aka the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Vihara is one of the recent additions to the Buddhist temples in Bintan. However, it has gained crazy traction within the short span – among both locals and tourists.

As the name suggests, you’ll find 500 Arahat(in simple terms – Enlightened Beings) sculptures that are life-size and all possess unique facial expressions and postures. Placed perfectly distanced from one another in a semi-circle, it’s an enigmatic view.

500 lohan temple bintan

Through the Vihara’s entrance is an enormous statue behind which you’ll pass by a super-impressive archway where most people end up getting Instagrammable shots.

Notice the beautiful gardens and ponds here and don’t forget to check out the main temple on the right side of the Arahats at the top of the garden hill.

Shop like a local at Tanjung Pinang!

Last but not least, go crazy with shopping in Tanjung Pinang! And I am serious about being ‘local’. Some packages take you to the big malls of Bintan, but I highly recommend visiting the local markets for an authentic experience.

Bintan Guide – Some things to keep an eye out for are handicraft souvenirs, traditional Indonesian clothing, and cheap local street food. The best part is both shopping stalls and street delicacies usually lie in the same markets.

There are many to pick from but some popular market names are Pasar Oleh Oleh (Pasar means market!), Rimba Jaya Night Market (yes, Bintan has a night market), Pujasera Shopping Center (best for local seafood), and Plaza Lagoi (ideal for families on the weekends).

Less Popular Things to Do in Bintan

These are some more things to do in Bintan if you’ve got all the time in the world. Places that wouldn’t hurt to miss or some that you would find in any part of Southeast Asia.

  • Local Seafood : When in Bintan, don’t miss out on well-known local seafood places. Some are included in the package tours, make sure to pick them!
  • Vihara Guan Ti Gong Temple : Another Buddhist Temple that features a 15-meter tall statue of Guan Yu behind the temple. The lifesize turtle is another Instagrammic spot at its entrance.
  • Visit the Elephant Park : This park features 7 Sumatran elephants. There are also plenty of other animals and an exciting park to check out here. I didn’t put it on the main list as I don’t wish to promote more people visiting a place where elephants are usually tortured to perform for the public.
  • Vihara Dharma Shanti : Though smaller than other temples, I found this temple the most photogenic and well-detailed. This place boasts a large gold-plated statue of the Sleeping Buddha. It is easier to access when in Tanjung Uban, Bintan.
  • Go Snorkeling on White Sands Island : Another offbeat one-day activity for sealife and snorkeling enthusiasts. People don’t prefer it as there are better snorkeling spots in Riau Islands or it costs too much. But those who visit it never regret it :)

An Indonesian salad of steamed vegetables, hard-boiled eggs, tofu, tempeh, and lontong (rice cake), served with a peanut sauce dressing. It is a popular dish in Indonesia and can be found in many restaurants and street food stalls.

Typically include potatoes, long beans, bean sprouts, spinach, chayote, bitter gourd, corn, and cabbage. The tofu and tempeh are usually fried, and the lontong is steamed. The peanut sauce is made with peanuts, chili peppers, garlic, ginger, lemongrass, and tamarind.

The peanut sauce is the one that truly elevates the salad. It combines the flavour of the ingredients harmoniously.

Bintan Island: A Secret Getaway Destination from Singapore

City breaks are buzzing, energetic and packed with activity. So, why not end your Singapore getaway with a few days of deluxe relaxation and exploration? Allow us to introduce a tranquil finale to your visit; three or four days on a tropical island called Bintan, just an hour from Singapore. A lesser-known Indonesian destination there are so many things to do in Bintan from 5-star indulgences to unique cultural experiences.

In case you haven’t heard of it, Bintan sits on Indonesia’s Riau Archipelago, just an hour’s ferry ride from Singapore. It’s known mainly for its championship golf courses and luxury resorts. So, it’s the ideal place to escape to from the buzz of the Little Red Dot. But that’s not all it has to offer.

Singapore to Tanjung Pinang

Travelling from Singapore to Tanjung Pinang, Indonesia takes just under an hour. A twenty-minute cab ride from downtown Singapore will have you at Tanah Merah ferry terminal, where your adventure begins.

Booking ahead is always recommended when it comes to Bintan ferry tickets. So, once you’ve got your $40 SGD (approximately) ticket, you’ll be on your way. Buy your Bintan ferry tickets through BRF or Sindo.

Flying from Singapore to Tanjung Pinang is possible with Garuda or Lion Air. However, the route requires at least one stopover, so the ferry is a much faster option.

To save you waiting in the heat, pre-book a transfer with your hotel from Tanjung Pinang. If you forget, don’t fret, there’s plenty of friendly taxi drivers at the Bintan ferry terminal more than willing to take you to your Bintan hotel.

While it is possible to take a day trip to Bintan from Singapore, we recommend you spend the weekend and get the most out of your time on the island with all of the fun and interesting things to do in Bintan.

Getting Around Bintan Island

Public transport in rare on Bintan so visitors usually hire scooters (for around Rp. 100,000 per day) or a car (for around Rp. 500,000 per day). Your hotel can help you organise either or simply negotiate with the local businesses in person.

If you aren’t confident driving around the island yourself, pre-book a private car and driver for your stay or your excursion days. This can also be done through your accommodation.

Bintan Attractions

Meet the sea gypsies of panglong village.

You’d be amazed at how much Bintan’s 453 square miles has to explore. The island is a melting pot of cultures and one that’s best embraced with a visit to traditional villages like the Sea Gypsies’ (also known as Orang Suku Laut) in Panglong.

The people of this humble community are some of the most welcoming you’re ever likely to meet and will be keen to entice you into their make-shift restaurants so you can feast on local delights like dried salted fish (don’t worry, it tastes better than it sounds!)

Catch sight of the locals crafting fishing nets or making their own boats, and don’t forget to venture further into the village to admire the mosque and cathedral too.

The village is located on the north of the island, not far from Trikora, and is easily accessible via our preferred method of transport – renting a moped or car – as it allows you the freedom and flexibility to explore on your own schedule.

Step Back in Time in Senggarang Village

The Chinese settlement of Senggarang , close to the ferry terminal at Tanjung Pinang, is also worth experiencing for yourself. Here, canals weave their way between the wooden houses built on stilts and there are numerous temples and shrines to admire. And don’t deny your taste buds the chance to sample the bounty of local seafood specialities, either. Look out for them piled high on the street food carts. See more in our Bintan photo journal .

Visit the Incredible 500 Lohan Temple

The 500 Lohan Temple is one of the most interesting things to do in Bintan. When it comes to Bintan attractions, it is really unique. The intricate hand-carved stone statues stand at the ready to welcome visitors and their cameras. Wander around and take in the incredible expressions of the arhats, step into the small vihara and enjoy the views. There is a small entrance fee to visit the site. It is closed on Mondays.

Take a Bintan Mangrove Tour

The Sebung River snakes around through the mangroves and offers visitors a brief encounter in the jungle. Tours run for about 90-minutes with guides sharing their local knowledge of the surroundings and wildlife you come across in passing from monkeys to monitors. The mangrove tour costs about Rp 180,000 per person.

Join the Locals at a Street Market

Try the delicious mie bangka (hakka – style dumpling soup) and mix with the locals at one of the local food markets. Or hit the shops at the popular Pulau Bintan markets to hunt down some bargains.

Bintan Activities

Enjoy some water-based fun.

If you’re something of a water baby, you’ll be happy to hear there are few sea-based activities that Bintan cannot offer up.

Rent (or take a lesson on) a paddleboard, jet ski, or kayak and set out toward some of the island’s most beautiful bays. Particularly worth a visit is the saltwater Crystal Lagoon where the waters are calm and stunningly clear and Trikora Beach.

The latter is made up of four sandy beaches dotted with restaurants and wooden huts that you can rent for the day. It’s well worth taking a snorkel with you too to discover the colourful fish that are living a life beneath the waves.

Try Some Tropical Hiking

As for more lively activities, Bintan is so varied in terrain and lush in tropical foliage that it’s no surprise hiking here is a popular pastime.

One of our favourite trails leads you through the rainforest and up Mount Bintan, past waterfalls and wildlife like monkeys, lizards, and vibrantly coloured birds. It’s not ridiculously high – only 340 metres – but the peak is still tall enough to reward you with sweeping panoramas that showcase the unique natural landscape.

B e sure to stop a while in the small, quaint villages at the bottom too, notable as some of the earliest settlements on the island.

The Grotto Santa Maria is another beautiful trail, and one that’s often dubbed a ‘hidden gem’. Built by a religious man from Holland in the eighteenth century, it’s made up of a series of fourteen sculptures and crosses that lead you up to the grotto and chapel.

Services are still held there every Sunday and tourists (if respectful, of course) are more than welcome to join, should they wish to. It’s tucked away not far from Trikora, and is a pretty, interesting trail that we strongly suggest adding to your itinerary.

Where to Stay in Bintan

The residence bintan.

As for where to stay in Bintan, one of the newer and most highly recommended additions to the Bintan resort scene is The Residence Bintan .

Complete with a stunning infinity pool, faultless service, a heavenly spa, and glorious chilled-out vibe, it’s a beachside property that’s well deserving of its five-star status.

It has been designed as a restorative escape, making it the ideal base for a stay that you want to be both relaxing and exploratory. Despite being less than an hour’s drive from the ferry terminal, it has an almost private island feel thanks in part to its abundance of greenery and sleek, zen-inducing spaces.

The infinity pool is undoubtedly our favourite area of the resort. Positioned to overlook the sea, it’s encircled by sun-drenched cabanas and a cocktail-laden pool bar, making for an idyllic spot to while away an afternoon.

And it’s equally peaceful once darkness falls too. Picture gently swaying palm trees, lights glinting on the horizon and the sound of the waves lapping over the shore as the tide makes its night-time retreat.

If that wasn’t already relaxing enough, head to the spa. Theirs is helmed by award-winning British brand, The Spa by ilā and it’s a little haven of serenity. Here, guests can take their pick from couples treatments, reflexology, chakra healing, pampering spa journeys, and beauty rituals. Their wellness programs dedicated to holistic health, yoga and rejuvenation come highly recommended too and are a wonderful choice for those who need to press the reset button.

Complimentary yoga sessions held morning and evening are also on hand to cater to your wellbeing, as is access to the state-of-the-art gym. Other activities at the resort include cooking classes, birdhouse painting, and ATV driving. By far the most memorable, however, is the sunset boat trip that takes you out among the mangroves and into the glowing firefly caves.

When it’s time to retreat to your private lodging, there’s nothing not to love about The Residence Bintan’s spacious garden villa . It’s a luxurious suite that’s set back from the beach, with a sprawling terrace that overlooks the lush landscaped gardens and views of the sea beyond. The super king-sized bed and deluxe toiletries ensure total comfort; utter perfection after a lively, adventurous day.

If you’re celebrating with that special someone, however, you might want to spring for the couples’ estate villa. It spans two storeys and has its own infinity pool; all positioned in a quiet, secluded spot away from the main resort, allowing you to savour the feeling of peaceful isolation.

The Restaurants

Anyone in the travel industry knows that good food is one of the most enjoyable parts of a vacation, so we were happy to discover that the culinary options at The Residence Bintan don’t disappoint.

Overlooking the rest of the resort is the Dining Room, where your days here begin. Breakfast combines Western flavours with Asian specialties, and we suggest bringing your appetite for what’s in store, as not only is there a waffle and pancake station, but also a dedicated egg chef ready to make your poached, scrambled or omelette dreams come true. The hot and cold buffet selections have plenty of variety too, to ensure carnivorous, pescatarian, and vegan palettes are all well catered for.

The piece de resistance of The Residence Bintan dining, however, is Rica Rica. The menu is a celebration of modern Indonesian flavours and is best enjoyed via an amazing set menu designed for two. It’s made up of a selection of Indonesian small plates that come exquisitely prepared using locally sourced ingredients. Particular highlights include the Wagyu beef rendang (slow-cooked for four hours) and aromatic fish curry that had us marvelling, eyes closed, at the rich cacophony of flavour in every bite.

The Residence Bintan also puts on ad hoc barbecues and romantic beach dining experiences. The latter happens most weekends and is beautifully set up after dark with tables on the sand dotted between the trees. The combination of candlelight dancing on the trees and fantastic Indonesian live music creates an intimate, casually elegant ambience that’s guaranteed to have you feeling utterly stress-free. As for the food, there are three tantalising set menus to pick from; one for meat, another for seafood and a third focused solely on vegetables.

A travel & lifestyle blog, bintan, indonesia: perfect weekend getaway from singapore. major attractions.

Few years ago, during our visit to BaIi, when we came across Bintang (a popular beer in Bali), I had no clue that there is also a place with similar name “Bintan”. Do you know about Bintan?Although we mostly prefer a laid back beach destination for our vacation. Last year it was Phuket and Krabi. Checkout my blogs about this trip. Phuket in 4 days , Krabi in 3 days

This year somehow we ended up finalizing Singapore. Sole reason for choosing Singapore was our naughty 2.5-year-old toddler. Short and direct flight from Bangalore (4 hours) and unlimited tourist attractions especially for kids were the reasons compelling enough to zero down to Singapore.

This one not being our typical relaxing beach vacation somehow we were having pangs of doubt (Although Singapore dint disappointed us in any way and we had a real good time)

One day we discovered from a friend that there are some Indonesian islands in close proximity to Singapore where we can go by Ferry. So I began my search and figured out that Bintan & Batam are the 2 major Indonesian islands near Singapore. And that’s how we decided to split our vacation between the Laid back zone and the Action zone.

Out of 2 Islands in Riau Archipelago of Indonesia, we chose Bintan, simply as it offered a wide choice of luxury resorts and some options for sightseeing.

Here’s all you need to know about Bintan, Indonesia, a perfect weekend getaway from Singapore.

About Bintan, Indonesia

Bintan is a perfect retreat for those looking for a peaceful time. Situated in the South China Sea, Bintan is the largest island in Riau Island Province of Indonesia with Tanjung Pinang as its capital. With its high-end resorts, world-class golf courses and proximity to Singapore, Bintan is one of the popular weekend getaways among Singaporeans.

Unlike popular beach destinations in Asia like Thailand or Bali, Bintan is relatively lesser known. This sparsely populated island has a glistening coastal line with white soft sand, secluded beaches, tropical forest including mangroves and some historical heritage to discover.

Bintan Island is differentiated into northern and southern parts. North of Bintan island known as Bintan resorts is primarily the center of tourist activities, with most of the beachfront resorts and host of recreational activities.

How to reach Bintan

By Sea – Bintan is just an hour away from Singapore through Ferry. There are frequent ferries from Tanah Merah ferry Terminal to Bandar Bentan Telani Terminal, which will take you to Bintan resorts or Sri Bintan Pura Terminal at Tanjung Pinang. Read all about how to reach Bintan and our ferry experience in my next blog.

From Johor Baru Malaysia, 5 ferries serve the daily schedule between Johor Bahru Ferry Terminal to Sri Bintan Pura Terminal, Tanjung Pinang.

By Air- Bintan only has a domestic airport – Raja Haji Fisabililah Airport. From the capital city of Jakarta there are daily flights to Bintan.

When to visit

Given its proximity to equator, hence the tropical climate is dominant all through the year. Temperature ranges between 21° and 32° Celsius, with average daytime temperature of around 28° Celsius. Early November to late March is the monsoon season.

Avoid planning your trip during public holidays or weekends, as it can get pretty crowded. Our stay in Bintan was from Sunday to Wednesday. It was nice as we could enjoy all the facilities to the maximum including the entire beach to ourselves!

  Where to stay

During our visit, we stayed in Nirwana Resorts by Nirwana gardens; it was a nice luxury resort with host of recreational activities and an incredible infinity pool. There are many resorts in the Bintan resorts Area. Read my complete review of the Nirwana gardens here. Hotel Review: Nirwana Resort Hotel,Bintan Indonesia

Major attractions

Bintan is primarily popular among tourists (mainly from Singapore) as a weekend getaway. Apart from relaxing, there are some other attractions, which you can add to your list if you intend to explore the island. Here’s listing all the activities, which I found interesting. We couldn’t try all of it due to shortage of time.

1) Explore the Bintan Resort Area

Bintan resort area in itself has so much to offer that you will fall short of time for the other activities. Nirwana Gardens has 5 resorts and a free shuttle. Some of the major activities and attractions offered at the resort were.

Beach – goes without saying! Bintan resort offers access to pristine beaches. An early morning or late evening walk in the palm fringed sandy beaches is a therapeutic experience. The beach at Nirwana resorts was perfect to soak your self into the sea and enjoy the tranquil surroundings. Calm sea with hardly any waves and crystal clear water was simply breath-taking.

Beach at Nirwana gardens.jpg

Variety of theme restaurants – If you love to try different cuisines, than probably exploring the restaurants will be a good option. Nirwana gardens have 9 restaurants offering different cuisines and unique experiences. I am sure other resorts in the area will have many more. Although we could not experience all of them but we particularly loved Calypso floating bar, where you can enjoy your drinks right above the sea.

calypso bar, Bintan

Enjoy the Pool – All the resorts have beautiful pools and that’s one amenity, which you should not miss.

infinity pool, nirwana garden resort, Bintan

Try Segway ride – Segway (Ninebot) are available on rental at Nirwana resort. Hop on to Segway and enjoy sunrise experience or catch the stunning sunset through a guided tour. Option to explore the area on your own is also available.

Buggy ride & ATVs – Nirwana gardens also offers exciting All terrain vehicles (ATVs) and Buggies on hourly rental basis. So you can rent one of those and enjoy the jungle trail or ride on the white sandy beaches.

20180425_085225.jpg

Recreational activities & adventure sports – There are host of other recreational activities like bowling, Air rifle, Archery etc. Get an adrenaline rush through 4 storey’s Zip line.

Enjoy feeding the elephants at Elephant center.

feeding elehants , Nirwana gardens Bintan

Water activities – There are interesting water activities which you can enjoy including scuba diving, under sea walk, jet ski, parasailing etc.

2) Lagoi Plaza & Lantern Park– Lagoi plaza is a beautiful mall situated at a little distance from Bintan resorts. Mall has many restaurants offering local cuisine at economical prices, spa, departmental store etc. Free shuttle service is available for pickup and drop at regular intervals. Although many of the shops in the mall are still unoccupied, you can visit this place for a different experience. The day we visited, there were very few visitors in the mall, and it was like a movie set with jazz music filling the air and lights all over. We had a very different experience, which I will share in my next blog.  Apart from the mall you can also visit Lantern Park, which is unique and will be of special interest to the kids. Try these unique paddling cars decorated with lights called odong odong or enjoy the 3.5km-long beachfront with white sand and azure waters.

Lagoi bay, Bintan

3) 500 Lohan temple  – or Vihara Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, a recently opened Buddhist temple in Tanjung Panang. There are over 500 life-sized, human like (Lohan) statues – each unique and different from the other. The expression on each statue is different.Temple has a huge entrance with a gigantic statue of Buddha. After climbing few stares you reach the main temple, decorated with bright red lanterns etc. We loved spending time in this Calm and peaceful place. Again being a weekday there were only handful of visitors. It’s a beautiful site for photography.

500 Lohan temple.jpg

4) Sengarrang – situated at a short distance away from Tanjung Panang is a unique ancient Chinese village built on the stilt along the coast .The rows of old wooden houses supported by the wooden logs have a very rustic appeal to it. A walk across this unique age-old colony of fishermen’s is a unique experience.Sengarrang also has some ancient Chinese temples, which you should not miss.

senggarang

Tian Shang Miao – Also Popularly known, as Banyan tree temple is a Century-old temple sitting under a massive banyan tree. The Banyan tree temple showcases the marvel of nature where the branches and the roots of the century old Banyan tree has curled itself around the temple forming a peculiar structure.

banyan tree temple, bintan.jpg

Vihara Dharma Sasana (temple) – This ancient temple was built to give thank for the safe sea passage of the early Chinese settlers. Temple showcases the co-existence of Gods and Dragons in Chinese mythology. The temple complex houses many ancient temples by the Sengarrang port including Marco temple, Sun Te Kong Temple and Tay Ti kong Temple.

5) Penyengat Island – Situated 15 minutes of motorboat ride away from Tanjung Pinang coast, Penyengat Island has a historical significance, dating back to the 18th Century, when it was established as a fort of the Sultanate of Johor – Riau . Today the island is one of the tourist attractions in Bintan. The Grand Mosque of the Riau Sultanate, near the harbour is one of the landmarks. This tiny island is also home to the ‘tombs of the sultans’, a common stopover that follows on after a visit to Masjid Raya. Unfortunately we could not visit this Island due to shortage of time.

Apart from these there are many more attractions as well as adventure activities that one can enjoy in Bintan depending upon the time available.

I have never heard of this place before. Looking at your wonderful photos, I see a great place and culture. Thank for sharing this.

Thanks so much . Even never knew about it few weeks before.so it was really nice to ex0lore a new place

Bintan looks like a beautiful, relaxing, tranquil place. I am originally from Thailand but I now live in England and I miss these type of beaches,

Yes bintan is so relaxing and nice.i love beaches too. Probably you should plan a visit 😊

I think I’m in love with this place. Reading your post for second time and I like it even more now 😊 Thank you for sharing 💕

Thats so nice of you and i am really glad that you liked it so much. Hope you get to visit soon 😊

Such a lovely travel photos! I’m from Singapore so been to some parts of Bintan quite few times already but never been to Nirwana Resorts as there’s much more to explore in Bintan. I shall consider Nirwana on my coming short getaway. 🙂

Thanks so much Farrah. Yes i loved the fact that nirwana offered many activities.

Your photos look so pretty from there! Such a great weekend getaway!

Thanks so much Andrea 😊

Bintan Island looks wonderful! I’ve only been to Bali in Indonesia, but it looks like I need to visit here too. Lovely photos too!

Thanks.yes its really nice and relaxing.though bali is still my favourite😊

Incredible island! I didn’t even know about this place let alone it’s close proximity to Singapore. Sounds like a perfect weekend getaway 🙂 Now if only Singapore was so close to me .. ha!

Thanks Richa. Even i dint knew about it before. But whenever you visit Singapore.. u can plan for a visit to bintan 😊

I am planning to be in Singapore for months next winter. Have thought about Bintan for a weekend. 500 Loohan and Tian Shang Miao look interesting.

Yes you should visit its nice and different from singapore 😊

That floating bar looks amazing! I’ve never heard of Bintan before so it’s great to learn about new places to visit.

Thanks yes it was beautiful. I loved the experience of floating bar

Bintan- I didn’t know that this place even existed Wonderful post and love the picture of 500 statues of Lohan

Thanks Mayuri 😊 it was indeed a discovery for me too

Being from Australia I can’t believe I’ve never visited Indonesia! So many amazing places including this one that I also had no idea existed. So excited to check it out when I eventually visit.

Never heard of Bintan! Looks amazing though. Also, I just googled it and wow its sooo close to Singapore. Good to know for my Southeast Asia trip next year! 🙂

Thanks michelle. I am glad you liked it. Hope you get to visit soon

Indonesia has been on my list, but just added recently. Singapore seems like an obvious destination, but Bintan sounds incredible! I would love to travel by sea from Singapore – sounds like a great trip!

This is the first time I am hearing about Bintan, Madhu. I have been to Indonesia but I missed visiting Bintan. I guess I have one more reason to explore Indonesia again! 🙂

Thanks lydia..actually for me too it was forst time i heard about Bintan. Probably you should plan and visit 😊

The 500 lohan temple seems really interesting — I’ve never seen anything like that before. And the beaches look beautiful. I’m not a huge fan of resort-y places, though. Are there any parts of the island where you can stay in more low-key accommodation?

Thanks yes its really nice. You can get low key accomodations at the capital town tanjung panang.. where more of local culture can be experienced

I like that they had the lines in the sand like you would find in a Zen garden. The island definitely has a plethora of options to try. The lantern garden looks very inviting. We would definitely enjoy seeing all the temples with the different architecture. The Banyan tree temple would be most intriguing to learn about in my opinion.

I like your story

Thanks so much

I had no idea that the islands were so close to Singapore. I absolutely love Singapore, but after so many visits, the attractions are starting to feel a little stale. This is so cool that I now know I have options to visit neat islands only an hour away. Thank you so much for the suggestions!

Hey Jen.. i am glad that you found it useful. Hope you like the island and get to visit soon 😊

Out of all the awesome things to see and do, I think I’d put visiting the temple first! Ive seen a few photos before and it must be so amazing in person to visit up close!

Thanks Zoe. Even i liked the temple best. It was unique and very peaceful.

That beach looks insane… the white sand ! I love the pictures of the temple, I really want to visit! I also think you look great with the elephant, such a cute picture

Thanks so much 😊 i hope you get to visit soon

Bintan looks beautiful! I would love to visit Singapore one day. This is so good knowing where else to go especially since I would think Singapore can get really busy. The infinities pools here look magical! I do have to be honest though, riding Elephants are extremely bad or them. I would love to spend time with them instead of riding and would promote that 🙂

I couldn’t agree more on elephant ride part and thats why we fed them instead. I would definitely promote that !

Wow that beach and that resort look amazing. And you don’t have to convince me to have a drink in a floating bar!!

ha ha the bar was absolutely amazing 🙂

As soon as I read your heading I thought of the beer as well! Meanwhile, I’ve never been to Bali or drank Bintang, but I’ve seen lots of the t-shirts in Australia. Those beaches are absolutely gorgeous! And who can turn down a resort?

Thanks Katherine, beach was absolutely stunning ! Hope you get to visit soon !

I have heard about these Indonesian islands close to Singapore but, to be honest, do not know a lot about them. They definitely look more laid back than Singapore. If I visit Singapore, I think I would not miss the opportunity to visit. I am all for seeing new and different places. I am sure the place is affordable too!

If you are visiting Singapore and you have little time, for sure you should explore them, its worth visiting 🙂

  • Pingback: Hotel Review: Nirwana Resort Hotel, Bintan Indonesia, Ideal family getaway! – madhuonthego

Wow, this is so beautiful! It looks like the perfect place to chill and relax away from the city with still plenty of cool activities.

Sure it is ! 🙂

I have to admit, I’d never heard of Bintan before but this is definitely a good thing! As you say, it’s a far lesser known island and is a bit more of the tourist trail – my favourite kind of place! It looks beautiful 🙂

thanks Louise, i hope you get a chance to visit and enjoy Bintan soon 🙂

This looks lovely!

I am slightly embarrassed that one of my favourite noodle places in London is called Bintan, but i had no idea it was the name of a place! I should have quizzed the lovely owner more about it!

I really like the look of those beaches, and Sengarrang. What a cool place to explore!

thanks so much 🙂 probably the owner may be from Bintan. I had no idea about this place too. but its really nice. Hope you get to visit it soon !

I think she mentioned she was from Singapore, but she might have just been saying a place that she thought we’d know. Her food was gorgeous, so that makes me want to try food in the real Bintan!! <3

Great i think then you should plan a visit to Bintan soon 😊

Indonesia has soo many islands I can’t even track, but all of them look gorgeous. Can’t wait to explore some of them

Ya thats true !hope you get a chance soon

Your photos looks soo beautiful. I want to go there now… ha..ha.. have to remember to go there if I visit Asia inthe future

Thanks so much. So glad you liked them 😊

I didn’t know that a place named Bintan even existed. It looks really lovely, the beaches especially.

Thanks so much.its a hidden gem 😊

A day trip or weekend from Singapore: Club Med, Bintan Island, Indonesia

Updated: Jul 18, 2020

Club Med Bintan Indonesia Travel guide weekend day trip from Singapore

Our travel guide and review for your perfect day or weekend at Club Med Bintan

Why haven't we done this before? Was the question on everyone's mind when got our first glimpse of the clear water beaches upon arrival at Club Med, Bintan . It was the perfect destination choice to celebrate my latest birthday, all inclusive food and cocktails for the day, white sand beaches and not even a flight away from Singapore.

Getting to Club Med Bintan Indonesia from Singapore:

We took the one hour 9.10am ferry from Tanah Merah Ferry terminal in Singapore, booked via Bintan Resort Ferries . If taking a taxi to get to the ferry terminal we recommend using the app Grab (for a first time discount use our referral code GRAB 1HU0ZBZO)

The price of an economy ferry ticket was $23 SGD each way, however we left it last minute and ended up having to book Emerald class for double the price to get our desired time slot (it's best to book at least a week in advance). We did however enjoy the perks of being Emerald Class passengers, including the peace and quite of lounge access while waiting to board our ferry and a larger seat once we boarded. Upon arrival at the ferry terminal we jumped in a taxi and headed off to Club Med, a 10 minute drive away.

Where to stay on Bintan Island:

This post contains some affiliate hotel links, if you click through and book via these links we will get a small commission at no extra cost to you.

From Singapore, it's possible to visit Bintan Island for a day trip only, however if you're looking to stay longer, the island offers a range of accommodation options for all budgets and at all levels of luxury ( See the options here ). To enjoy a day pass at Club Med, you also don't need to stay at the hotel itself, it's possible to visit just for the day.

Best Hotel Deals in Bintan:

About the club med bintan day pass:.

A single day pass or day + evening pass can be booked on arrival at the Club Med Bintan Resort. We tried to book in advance but it was not possible. The day pass was excellent value, $1.2M IDR ($116 SGD per person) for an all inclusive day at the resort (less than the cost of just a few cocktails on a night out in Singapore).

We had so many fun filled activities included in our pass to choose from, water sports, fitness classes, golf lessons, a flying trapeze, there was more than a single day could fill. There was also a wide selection of food and beverage options ensuring we would spend the day fully indulged.

bintan weekend trip

When to visit Club Med Bintan:

The best time to visit Bintan Island is during the dry season, between March to October, but this is also peak season thus can be busy. We visited on a Saturday in early March and still found it reasonably quiet.

How we spent our day at Club Med Bintan:

While there is a wide range of activities on offer for all ages, we opted to spend the day by the beach, enjoying a book, laying on the deck chairs and a swimming in the small waves. Our day included an endless selection of cocktails, barbecue snacks by the beach, a buffet lunch and an afternoon swim in the pool. We opted only for the day pass which ended at 6pm. The resort has shower facilities where we were able to freshen up before heading back to the ferry terminal for our 8pm ferry back to Singapore.

3D2N Solo Wellness Retreat in Bintan — Self-care, Habit Stacking And a Total Mental Reset

Club Med Bintan Swimming Pool — Solo Travel

Lounging by the pool at Club Med Bintan.

Bintan is often seen as a destination for seafood, waterparks, and a more upscale version of Batam . But for me, it’s more than just that — it’s a fantastic escape from the busy life we lead. While many people go there to relax in their hotel rooms, I wanted a proper mental reset that goes beyond simply watching TV in bed.

During my recent trip, I made a conscious effort to recharge in meaningful ways. And what better place to do that than Club Med Bintan? This resort focuses on personal wellness and offers a range of activities to help you rejuvenate. Plus, I was fortunate enough to be there during their Body and Soul programme , which took place from 7 to 25 May 2023. This programme added even more health and wellness activities to the already inclusive resort package.

Here’s how I filled my retreat in Bintan doing yoga, indulging in spas, spending quality alone time, and gaining some useful takeaways along the way 😊

Getting to Club Med Bintan was a breeze cause of the arranged pick-up (a 15-minute coach ride) from the ferry terminal. The staff took care of our luggage too — the moment we cleared the customs, it was taken care of until I arrived in my room!

Club Med Bintan room - self-care and personal growth

For a solo traveller, the Superior Room with Balcony was more than luxurious. After a quick unpack and shower, you’ll be introduced to the resort by the G.O.s (Gentle Organisers) — the multi-talented staff you’ll come across often at all the Club Med resorts. They’re also the ones who perform during the nightly live shows and conduct sports and wellness activities around the resort.

Cost: From ~S$370/night (subject to travel period) How to get there: Select “with transport” during booking — this includes a ferry ride from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal and a coach transfer from Bandar Bentan Telani (BBT) Ferry Terminal to the resort grounds in Bintan.

Healthy buffets at Club Med’s Bottomless Buffets

Salmon Poke Bowl during buffet breakfast at Club Med Bintan — Retreat in Bintan

Yummy bowl of Salmon Poke — an excellent option for a batch-cooked meal.

Boy, did I gain weight here! But hey, I believe that being healthy comes in all shapes and sizes. As a pescatarian, I had some concerns about the food options. But to my surprise, there were plenty to choose from. Plant-based dishes were served every lunch and dinner. Pan-seared salmon and meat-free pasta were also a common sight.

There’s a three-hour-long buffet every breakfast, lunch, and dinner but the buffet hall is closed otherwise. When I felt like having a nibble in between buffet timings, La Terrasse Specialty Restaurant is always open!

The food here was really good and gave me a lot of healthy and simple recipe ideas for my batch-cooked meals back home.

Plus, the Main Bar and Beach Bar are open for free-flow drinks (for drinks not on the premium menu) daily — so it was endless ice lattes and bottomless mocktails and beers for me!

Buffet hours: 7AM – 10AM (Breakfast), 12PM – 2PM (Lunch), 6:30PM – 9PM (Dinner), closed during non-buffet hours Opening hours: 9AM – 12AM (Main bar), 9AM – 10PM (Beach bar), 10AM – 9:15PM (La Terrasse Specialty Restaurant)

Aerial Yoga at the Palapa

bintan weekend trip

I do yoga sometimes but aerial yoga is a completely different ball game! It takes a lot of core, arm strength, and balance!

Yasuragi is a Japanese word that refers to the gentle feeling of inner peace. Not to be dramatic but I felt Yasuragi while doing the ‘superman pose’.

Joining a 45-minute beginner class wasn’t as intimidating as I thought it would be and having a knowledgeable instructor (shoutout to Jean!) helped a lot. I love how the poses challenged not only my physical strength but also my composure when I find myself suspended in an uncomfortable position.

There are also Hatha and Yin yoga classes available at varying difficulty levels so you can choose to take the same class every day and get better at it or dabble in each type of yoga to find your forte.

*Pro-tip: Book a slot the day before at the reservation counter beside the theatre. Classes fill up quickly so be the first ones there when the counter opens at 7:45PM.

Activity timing: 10AM, 11AM, and 3:30PM (daily except Tuesdays at the Palapa)

LUSH Bath Bomb Workshop

bintan weekend trip

Getting hands-on at a Lush bath bomb-making workshop.

I’ve been using cruelty-free brands for makeup and skincare for many years now and LUSH is one of them! So it was great to be able to join in the bath bomb-making workshop while on the retreat in Bintan. We were told we’d be making LUSH Shea Butter bath bombs during the workshop by hand-mixing citric acid and sodium bicarbonate powder. The entire process was guided by amazing LUSH employees and all participants got to bring back the bath bomb they made here!

*Fun fact: LUSH tests their products on people who volunteer themselves — usually the staff!

Being around invigorating smells that are synonymous with LUSH products, I was reminded of how I used to treat myself to their products every payday. But somewhere along the path to workaholism, I stopped making time for indulgent self-care rituals. Now is a great time as any to get back into it!

*Pro-tip: Psst! Don’t limit yourself to bath bombs! Self-care comes in many forms. Personally, I enjoy lighting a LUSH scented candle during my quiet reading time.

For now, the workshop will only run during the Body and Soul programme so be sure to join in if you’re there and get yourself a complimentary bath bomb!

Activity timing: Varies (part of the Body and Soul programme )

Beach Clean Up

Beach Cleanup at Club Med Bintan — Retreat in Bintan

When I was (much) younger, I came across the quote, “The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.” For me, that adequately sums up what it means to care for the environment — something I’m passionate about.

So I was really excited about the weekly beach cleanup organised by Club Med Bintan . About 20 of us gathered on the beach where we’re given a sack and a short safety briefing (to watch out for glass shards) before setting off. By the end of it, most of our sacks were filled with single-use plastics and discarded fishing gear.

Beach Cleanup at Club Med Bintan — Retreat in Bintan

One of my favourite experiences at Club Med Bintan is their on-site Sea Turtle Conservation and Hatchery. To keep the turtle eggs safe from predators, they’re carefully dug up and transferred to the sheltered hatchery until they’re ready to be hatched.

*Fun fact: For the hatchlings’ safety, guests aren’t allowed to handle them. But if you’re there between May to September, you might be able to witness their release to the sea 🐢

Over the years, I came to understand that it’s not about saving the world but it’s about creating a positive ripple effect. Picking up microplastics along the beach may not do much about large-scale pollution, but it’ll at least give the sea turtles that come to this beach cleaner waters and a fighting chance.

Activity timing: 8:45AM – 9:30AM (part of the Body and Soul Programme )

Seeking Out Bintan’s Hidden Gems

blue lake Bintan — solo travel

Seeking out lesser-known places is one of my favourite things and one of the perks of solo travel is being able to do whatever I want, whenever I want to! So when planning this solo retreat in Bintan, I went online and pre-booked a personal tour to discover the lesser known Bintan Sand Dunes and Blue Lake .

The naturally blue lake against the piles of whitish-orange sand make for a good photo backdrop which is probably why this place has become a hidden gem. And despite gaining popularity in recent years, it certainly hasn’t lost its alluring charm.

*Fun fact: The sand here is a result of mining which has now ceased, and the blue lake is naturally collected rainwater!

Other than a photo-op spot, you can also enjoy ATV rides around the Dunes or take pictures with a falcon — prices seem to vary depending on your haggling skills! There are also food stalls at the entrance if you fancy a quick bite.

bintan weekend trip

Oh, and here’s a tip if you’re looking to have an adventurous day out in Bintan. Book excursions through Club Med to make your solo trip all the more fuss free. Head to the excursion desk at the resort’s main lobby and pick from a range of activities like a Sea Fishing trip, Sunset Cruise, or Mangrove Tour .

Address: Bintan Sand Dunes, Busung, Seri Kuala Lobam, Bintan Regency, Riau Islands 29152, Indonesia

Spa Treatment at CSpa

bintan weekend trip

Since spas at Club Med are often top-tier, I decided to get a 1-hour traditional massage (1,008,000Rp) after a day out in the sun.

CSpa is tucked away in a tranquil little nook in the farthest corner of the resort. Stepping in, I was greeted with a cup of hot tea before being whisked off to an amazing private sea-view room. I don’t recall much after the foot soak and head massage cause I fell asleep once the masseuse got to my pressure points — all I remember is being completely relaxed!

I run pretty often and outdoorsy activities are part of my weekend routine, so taking care of my body becomes increasingly important as I age.

Other than a massage, CSpa also has exfoliating and body wrap treatments which focus more on skin rejuvenation and hydration.

Cost: 1,008,000Rp for a Traditional Massage (book at the level 1 reservation desk) Opening hours: 10AM – 7PM

Sailing Lessons on a Private Beach

sailing lessons at club med bintan — solo travel

Having a skilled sailing instructor makes all the difference if it’s your first time at the sport. Thanks to Rey, I was confidently manoeuvring the yacht by controlling the mainsheet and rudder just 5 minutes in. The key is to orientate the yacht upwind, so the sail catches wind and moves forward.

Trying new activities like sailing and aerial yoga in Bintan is a huge plus point as one trial lesson in Singapore costs a lot more! So get a bang for your buck and experiment with as many things as you can while you’re here.

Adult sailing lessons are available in the mornings and afternoons. Duration of lessons vary depending on how many guests have booked a session during that window period, the wind conditions, and the number of instructors available.

Activity timing: 9:30AM – 11:30AM and 2:30PM – 4:30PM (book your session on the day itself at the Watersports Centre)

Wall Climbing to Conquer Old Fears

bintan weekend trip

Me falling after landing with my cheer squad around me!

I remember attempting wall climbing when I was 13. My body froze less than halfway up due to my fear of falling from heights and I never attempted it again since then. But with some moral support, and 16 years later, I managed to scale to the top this time. Holding on to a fear that developed years ago seems so foolish now and I can see myself actually doing wall climbing for fun back in Singapore !

The wall here is beginner (and kid) friendly so it was great for practice. There weren’t other guests around while I was there so I could scale it repeatedly until my arms gave way. Having a G.O there to encourage me and look out for my safety helped a lot too.

For veteran climbers, this might be good fun but it likely won’t be a challenge. If you’re looking for something new to try your hand at, the Sports Centre also has archery, tennis, and squash. Activity timings vary so remember to check the schedule online or on notice boards around the resort.

Activity timing: Varies (at the Sports Centre)

Creating Scents and Artwork with THANN and Art Wonderland

bintan weekend trip

Bringing back my own bottle of room and body spray for free!

During this retreat in Bintan, I engaged my inner child in sensory play for the first time in a long time. I got to create my own scented spray at the aromatherapy workshop by THANN and an art piece inspired by nature during the Printmaking with Nature workshop by Art Wonderland !

Making an aromatherapy spray was really therapeutic. The instructor provided six bottles of essential oils of varying notes — from citrus to floral. We were given the autonomy to create our signature spray by mixing them in any combination we wanted. We got to keep our creation too!

Printmaking in Nature class by Art Wonderland — Mindfulness and Relaxation

Leaves I collected and my printmaking piece .

Printmaking with Nature is exactly as it sounds! The best part about this outdoor art-jamming session is strolling on the grass searching for leaves — leaves that aren’t too fresh or too dry are perfect to be painted on.

As adults, engaging in sensory play is a small yet intentional act that allows us to reconnect with our innate curiosity, cultivate mindfulness, and enhance overall well-being amidst our busy schedules.

*Fun fact: Both THANN and Art Wonderland are Singapore-based companies!

Activity timing: Varies (part of Body and Soul programme )

Takeaways from a Solo Wellness Retreat in Bintan

Club Med private beach during sunrise — solo travel

Club Med Bintan’s private beach during low tide.

This solo wellness retreat in Bintan was truly transformative. I realised that incorporating habit-stacking and self-care into my daily routine doesn’t have to be complicated at all. The activities they had lined up, like fitness sessions and soothing spa treatments, were so immersive and spiritually refreshing. It was an incredible experience of self-discovery and rejuvenation!

Making time for self-care like running myself a bath every week or going for a walk in nature doesn’t seem like such a feat now. In fact, habit-stacking is pretty simple. For example, I could load my weekly laundry, go for a 20-minute walk, come back, and run a bath, all before the wash cycle ends 🤯

LUSH beach cleanup at Club Med Bintan — Solo Travel

Volunteers who showed up for the beach clean-up organised by Club Med.

And on top of that, it was just liberating to be able to enjoy these activities within the resort’s compounds and not having to worry about the logistics of travelling to classes, workshops, and food.

As a bonus, I had the chance to connect with like-minded individuals, forging meaningful connections that added depth to my journey.

The Body and Soul programme ends on 25 May 2023 but the good news is that it’s a recurring programme — so there’s always a next time if you miss out on it this year! Plus, they understand that everyone’s schedule is different, so you can choose a stay duration that works best for you. Whether you have a free weekend or a whole week of annual leave, your well-deserved mental reset awaits right here.

Bintan, a popular weekend destination from Singapore is only an hour ferry ride away. The peaceful island is a perfect escape from your daily life with lot of things to offer.

However our trip was just to get some fresh air after a hectic couple of months. Hence, we ignored all the activities just to enjoy the sea view from our resort and ate all the nice dishes possible. Here are few things to know before you plan for a trip to Bintan.

1. Book your ticket in advance in case you are going for a long weekend. Tickets are on high demand on holidays/long weekends.

2. Bintan Resort Ferries (BRF) are the most popular ferry operator , starts from Tanah Merah ferry terminal.

Link: www.brf.com.sg

Indians do not require a visa to stay up to 30 days in Indonesia, as at January 2020. You may need to show the return tickets at immigration counter.

Resort bookings:

1. There are plenty of options you can explore, however we chose to stay near Bandar Bintan Telani Ferry terminal, for which Nirwana Resort Hotel is an extraordinary option. They have shuttle to pickup and drop for all their guests.

2. We have used booking.com for our reservation. We booked the room with complimentary breakfast.

Photo of Weekend Trip to Bintan, Indonesia. 2/6 by foovelnus

1. There are variety of options available in the resort. Room service comes with extra charge.

2. The breakfast was served with huge variety.

3. Outside food it not accessible as there is no nearby market place.

4. You can walk to CALYPSO Floating bar to see a spectacular sunset holding you favourite drink.

5. Try the Kelong Seafood Restaurant if you are a big fan of seafood.

Other points to Note:

>People with motion-sickness / seasickness should use recommended medicine before boarding the ferry.

>It is needless to mention that the island is costly may be because the place has been built for tourists only. Food that you buy, the activity that you choose to do or any essential (you might forget to carry) are all expensive.

>It is better to get money exchanged from Singapore. Credit card is accepted at all places, however they will deduct extra charge for that.

>If you have time in hand there are various activities that you can plan. Try different games, fishing, ride ATV, Relax at the infinity pool. You can take a mangrove trip or go for exciting water sports activities. Visit one of the traditional fishing villages for a taste of local culture and food. There is something for everyone you could never run out of options.

>A certain number of crowd come here to play golf. However I cannot help much on the same.

Overall, I consider Bintan as a funfilled weekend destination and suggest you to plan your visit once the travel restrictions are finally lifted. Till then Stay Home,Stay Safe.

Best service with good price”

It was my first time visiting Indonesia and the resort is very beautiful with a nice beach view. Staffs in there are so friendly and try to give their best. I thought the price only including breakfast but the dinner also included. They provided us a very good dinner and it was such a pleasure to have dinner beside a beach. It's good for us coz it's pretty hard to get food since it's not close to the city. Overall I'm really happy for it and will definitely visit there again.

Recommendation”

The beach is nice, the hotel is also nice but the breakfast menu is not varied enough

Enjoyable stay”

Staff were really friendly and welcoming. Loved the view. Very relaxing, and cheap good food

3 day 2 night stay”

Resort has pretty much the basic necessities, breakfast and dinner provided, both buffet style but dinner could have more options.

Nice place to stay”

Good staff service, good location, reasonable price,
