Who has won the ATP Tour finals the most times?

At the end of each calendar year, the curtain comes down on another action-packed season at the ATP Tour Finals. With every major prize handed out, with four more Grand Slam winners crowned, eight men battle it out for the right to finish on the highest of highs.

Emerge victorious in the last event of the campaign and the winter break will feel a little more festive for those able to place another shiny memento on the mantelpiece. All of the hard work that has gone before will feel worth it if feet can be put up with another title added to the collection.

It will not take long for attention to turn towards the start of another quest for honours, with the latest tennis odds favouring 6/4 shot Novak Djokovic, 11/4 Daniil Medvedev and 7/1 Rafael Nadal to go well at the 2023 Australian Open. When it comes to tennis tips today , the cream will always rise to the top.

There is one more major hurdle to clear before then, though, with many a legacy enhanced at the ATP Tour Finals. Who, though, has collected that particular prize the most throughout the years?

Roger Federer

The end of an era, merci Roger ❤️ @rogerfederer | #RForever pic.twitter.com/QwnRERud0p — ATP Tour (@atptour) September 23, 2022

The winner of eight Slams as a player, before going on to help Andy Murray break his duck in that department as a coach, Lendl often saved his best for the big occasion. The enigmatic Czech was a force to be reckoned with throughout the 1980s, winning five Tour Finals titles – including a run of three in a row between 1985 and 1987.

Pete Sampras

There was a time when Sampras’ achievements at the highest level appeared set to earn him standing at the top of any winners list. The classy American has been nudged down that particular chart, but few can claim to have matched his exploits at the ATP Tour Finals – with five successes enjoyed between 1991 and 1999.

A man that can appear invincible when performing at the peak of his powers, Djokovic will believe that he is not done yet when it comes to the ATP Tour Finals. He opened his account in that department back in 2008 and enjoyed a faultless run of four triumphs between 2012 and 2015. The iconic Serb could easily top this chart by the time he heads into retirement.

Ilie Nastase

Another mercurial talent that actually won more Tour Finals than he did Grand Slam titles. Nastase triumphed at the French and US Opens, but it was at the end of any given season that he really burst into life, claiming the last trophy of the year in 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1975.

It may come as some surprise to find that Rafael Nadal – the most successful player in the history of men’s tennis – has never won the ATP Tour finals. He will be competing in that event for the 17th time in 2022, with the Spanish superstar getting another shot at adding his name to a roll of honour that feels slightly incomplete without him.

Top 10 active ATP Tour players with 500 career wins: Who joins the Big Four on the list?

Rafael Nadal after winning US Open

We know the Big Four of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray are on the list of active players with more than 500 career wins, but who else features?

Marin Cilic became the 10th active player to reach that milestone this week, but we bet it will take you a while to get the names of the other few of the players on the list.

Here you go…

10. Marin Cilic – 500 career match wins The Croatian is latest member to join the 500 club as his victory over Ivo Karlovic at the Kremlin Cup was his 500th win on the ATP Tour.

A smiling Marin Cilic

“It would definitely mean that I’ve had an amazing career. I’ve been on the Tour for many years and, more or less, every season has been quite consistent from me,” he said. “I’ve played a lot of matches and there’s always an opportunity to learn from every match. That’s the nice part of tennis.

“I’m aware of [the milestones] when I achieve them and it’s a huge satisfaction that the work is showing itself in the results. Overall, my goal is to be the best I can be.”

9. Stan Wawrinka – 510 career match wins Stan The Man reached his 500th career win at Roland Garros earlier this year and has notched up a few more wins since then.

The 34-year-old turned pro in 2002 and he reached a high of No 3 in the world, but has struggled with injury during latter stages of his career.

Of course, he is a three-time Grand Slam winner having won the Australian Open (2014), French Open (2015) and US Open (2016).

8. Tommy Robredo – 533 career match wins The Spaniard started playing professional tennis way back in 1998 and he is still going strong at the age of 37.

Robredo became the fifth Spaniard overall after Rafael Nadal, Manuel Orantes, David Ferrer and Carlos Moya to join the elite club when he notched up the 500-win milestone back in October 2014.

He has won 12 ATP Tour titles and reached No 5 in the world rankings back in August 2006, but wins are hard to come by these days as he is yet to register a victory on the ATP Tour in 2019.

7. Richard Gasquet – 537 career match wins The man with the one-handed backhand was tipped for big things early in his career, but he sadly never reached the heights everyone expected him to reach.

Richard Gasquet celebrates

“I’m happy I did it in Monte-Carlo 16 years after my first victory,” the Frenchman, who turned pro 2002, said when he achieved the milestone. “There are very few players who have achieved this… I certainly am among the worst of players [to achieve it].”

6. Fernando Verdasco – 544 career match wins Interesting fact, Verdasco joined the elite 500 club after Gasquet and Robredo, but he is now ahead of them in terms of wins.

The Spaniard, who has been playing on the ATP Tour since 2001, notched up win No 500 at the Madrid Open in May last year.

The 35-year-old has seven titles to his name with a career-high ranking of No 7.

5. Tomas Berdych – 640 Former Wimbledon finalist Berdych was considered as the best of the rest for a long period as he often came up short in Grand Slams due to the likes of Messrs Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray.

The Czech, who turned pro in 2002, reached the milestone in February 2015 and declared: “It feels great. I need to make sure I keep my body fresh so I can make another 500.”

But sadly he has struggled with injury in recent years so another 500 wins seems to be out of reach.

4. Andy Murray – 669 career match wins Former world No 1 Murray also notched up his 500th career match win in 2015 as he became the first British player to do so and was the 46th player overall at the time.

Andy Murray pointing

“There’s different ways of judging the success of someone’s career, but winning 800-900 matches is something that’s happened very rarely and a difficult thing to do – so it gives you something to aim at,” he said.

Eight hundred match wins are a long way away now as he has been hampered by injury in recent years, but he seems to be hitting his straps again following a successful hip operation at the start of 2019.

3. Novak Djokovic – 884 career match wins The reigning world No 1 turned pro in 2003 and 10 years later he became the 40th Open Era player to pick up 500 career wins.

He achieved the feat during the third round at Roland Garros in 2013 and at the time he was a six-time Grand Slam winner with his best yet to come.

Since then he has notched up another 384 match wins and added another 10 Grand Slams to his tally. Pretty impressive stuff.

2. Rafael Nadal – 967 career match wins The Spaniard no doubt has his eyes set on the 1,000 career match wins milestones and he is likely to reach it during the early stages of the 2020 season.

It took him 605 matches to win 500 matches with the important victory coming at the Barcelona Open in 2011.

At the age of 24, he was the second-youngest player to reach 500 career wins with Bjorn Borg top of the list as he was 23 when he achieved the record.

“This is the consequence of years of hard work,” he said. “The only negative thing is that I have already been on the circuit nine years.”

Roger Federer applauding

The Swiss got to No 500 back at the 2007 Monte Carlo Masters and with the win he also went past the $30m mark in career earnings.

“Two incredible numbers,” he said at the time.

In April 2007 Federer had 10 Grand Slam titles and just over $30m in prize money to his name, fast forward to October 2019 and he has 20 majors and have earned more than $126m in prize money.

TURIN, Italy (AP) — Novak Djokovic ended the year just as he started it — by setting records.

The top-ranked Djokovic won a record-breaking seventh ATP Finals title on Sunday with a straight-set victory over home favorite Jannik Sinner.

Djokovic took 1 hour, 43 minutes to win 6-3, 6-3 as the Serbian continues to reach new heights at the age of 36.

He started 2023 with a record-extending 10th Australian Open title and went on to claim his 23rd Grand Slam singles trophy at the French Open, breaking Rafael Nadal’s mark. Djokovic, who lost the Wimbledon final to Carlos Alcaraz, also won the U.S. Open .

“One of the best seasons I’ve had in my life, no doubt,” Djokovic said. “To crown it with a win against a hometown hero in Jannik, who has played amazing tennis this week, is phenomenal.”

Djokovic entered Sunday’s final tied with Roger Federer on six titles at the season-ending tournament for the year’s top eight players.

And he stretched out his arms and beamed broadly after clinching his seventh when Sinner double-faulted.

The victory had echoes of the clinical way Djokovic dispatched second-ranked Carlos Alcaraz in Saturday’s semifinal encounter.

“I’m very proud of the performances these last two days against Alcaraz and Sinner, probably the best two players in the world next to me and (Daniil) Medvedev at the moment, and the way they have been playing I had to step it up,” Djokovic said.

“I had to win the matches and not wait for them to hand me the victory and that’s what I’ve done. I think I tactically played different today than I have in the group stage against Jannik, and just overall it was a phenomenal week.”

It was his fourth win over Sinner, who had recorded a first-ever victory against Djokovic in the group stage in Turin and was the first Italian to reach the final.

But Djokovic was in imperious form on Sunday and won 14 straight points from the end of the first set to the third game of the second to leave him firmly in control and subdue the Turin crowd.

Djokovic had already secured the year-end No. 1 ranking for a record-extending eighth time by winning his opening match at the ATP Finals.

After this tournament, Djokovic will become the first player to hold the No. 1 ranking for 400 weeks, with Roger Federer at 310 the only other man to eclipse the 300-week mark.

It was also only the second time in the last 15 years that a player has made the finals of all four Grand Slam tournaments and the ATP Finals. The only previous occasion was when Djokovic did it in 2015.

Sinner came into the final having won all of his matches in Turin and backed by a fervent home crowd, who had dreams of him becoming the first Italian to win the tournament in its 54-year history.

But the 22-year-old Sinner could offer little in response to a master class from Djokovic, especially in a blistering first set that lasted just 38 minutes and saw the Serbian win 20 of 22 service points. Djokovic also served up 13 aces during the match.

“Congratulations to you (Novak) for this week and not only: you started the season by winning and you ended it by winning, you won three Slams and many other tournaments,” Sinner said. “What else is there to say? You’re an inspiration not only for all those watching, but especially for the players.

“I also want to thank my team … we saw also today that I can still improve a lot but we can look at the positive things from this season. When we started the year I was one player and now I’m another. Thanks to you who have helped me understand so many things.”

Nelly Korda plays a shot during the second round of The Chevron Championship at Carlton Woods in Texas

Nelly Korda one off the lead in Chevron Championship with eye on equalling LPGA Tour record

  • Joint leaders Atthaya Thitikul and Jin Hee Im are on eight under
  • World No 1 out to equal LPGA Tour record for five straight wins

Nelly Korda remains on track for a record-tying fifth straight victory as she contends at the year’s opening LPGA major. The women’s world No 1 shot a three-under 69 second round to be one shot off the pace at the Chevron Championship in Texas on Friday local time.

Joint leaders Atthaya Thitikul (67) and Jin Hee Im (67) lead Korda by one stroke while eight under at the halfway point, as several former winners failed to make the cut.

Korda began the day two shots off the lead after opening with a 68 at Carlton Woods and made a double bogey at the opening hole but rallied with six birdies. She is seeking her second major after winning the Women’s PGA Championship in 2021.

The 25-year-old could join Nancy Lopez (1978) and Annika Sorenstam (2004-05) as the only players to win five consecutive LPGA Tour events. She was asked if it felt inevitable that she would tie the record after her recent run of success and strong play in the first two rounds.

“I’m just at the halfway point right now. The amount of golf that I’ve played, I still have that to go,” Korda said. “There is still a lot of golf left and anything can happen. Just going to stick to my process and vibe with ... what my coach says.”

Thitikul, a 21-year-old from Thailand who has won twice on the LPGA Tour, missed the beginning of this season with a thumb injury. She made six birdies and one bogey on Friday.

Im is in her first season on the LPGA Tour after playing the Korean LPGA since 2018. She went bogey-free on Friday.

Former world No 1 Lydia Ko, who won this tournament in 2016 at Mission Hills in the California desert, shot 71 and was part of a big group four shots back. She missed the cut last year in the Chevron’s first season in Texas.

Past champions to finish among the 73 players that missed the cut this year were Patty Tavatanakit (2021), Jin Young Ko (2019), Pernilla Lindberg (2018), So Yeon Ryu (2017), Lexi Thompson (2014), Stacy Lewis (2011) and Yani Tseng (2010).

Steph Kyriacou was the leading Australian, five shots from the lead after a 69, while Gabriela Ruffels slipped to two under after a 73, with Sarah Kemp (73) a shot further back, as Robyn Choi (73) and Karis Davidson (74) scraped through the cut at two over.

But Australia’s biggest names Minjee Lee and Hannah Green made early exits. World No 5 Lee endured a dismal week, posting a 77 to miss the cut at seven over, along with fellow major winner Green (72, five over) and youngster Grace Kim (72, four over).

Kyriacou, 23, has two top 10 finishes in majors and believes she can step up this weekend. “In the past I’ve kind of got scared of being in the spotlight,” Kyriacou told LPGA Media. “This weekend I’m going to embrace it a bit more and try to do what I did the last couple of days.”

The English amateur Lottie Woad, who qualified as the winner of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur this month, is four shots off the pace in her first LGPA event after a second-round 69. Woad is part of a seven-way tie for 10th which also includes compatriot Jodi Ewart Shadoff.

Woad, a sophomore at Florida State, is missing the ACC Championship to compete in this tournament. “It’s definitely been a whirlwind,” Woad said. “Kind of didn’t really have a chance to let Augusta sink in really. Was just coming here straight away. I obviously took a lot of confidence from Augusta, so just trying to use that for this week.”
