HARDY brings night of country rock to Nashville's Municipal Auditorium, with Lainey Wilson, Lauren Alaina, Jelly Roll

blake shelton tour 2023 song list

If there are two things Michael Wilson Hardy can do, it's write a song and put on one heck of a show.

Country rocker HARDY is hitting the stage at Nashville's Municipal Auditorium for three nights, rocking out Thursday to Saturday. Accompanying the Philadelphia, Mississippi-born Nashville resident on "The Mockingbird & The Crow" tour are openers Lainey Wilson and Dylan Marlowe.

HARDY, born Michael Wilson Hardy, released his album "The Mockingbird & The Crow" in January, further trademarking his unique sound: half boot-stomping country and half head-banging rock, all the while bubbling with a signature "bad boy of country" outlaw spin.

Though HARDY is now one of country music's top touring solo acts, he got his start behind the scenes. HARDY, who received a degree in songwriting from Middle Tennessee State University, first wrote songs for some of country's most notable artists including Blake Shelton, Morgan Wallen, Dierks Bentley and Florida Georgia Line.

Now, he's risen through the ranks and earned four CMA nominations for November's awards show. Today, he is most recognizable for songs "Truck Bed," "Wait in the Truck" (featuring Lainey Wilson), "Sold Out" and "Give Heaven Some Hell."

More: 2023 CMA Awards nominees announced: Lainey Wilson, Jelly Roll top list

Friday, during the evening with a packed crowd full of enthusiasm and vigor, hit rock song "Sold Out" captured the evening well. HARDY screamed into the mic, "Middle finger to the sky 'til I'm gone and dead / .44 in the Ford for the copperheads / Alcohol in my cup, got the whole house / Wall to wall and I still ain't sold out."

Alongside Nashville's favorite rebel, the crowd raised their hands and shook their heads.

Here are the highlights from HARDY and company's evening of foot-stomping country rock.

Opener Lainey Wilson

Nashville's rising country star Lainey Wilson took the stage after Dylan Marlowe's opening set.

Wilson, the "Things a Man Oughta Know" singer and native Louisianan, recently garnered a whopping nine Country Music Association award nominations . The country singer released album "Bell Bottom Country" last year with hits "Heart Like a Truck" and "Watermelon Moonshine."

To fans' delight, Wilson recently announced her 2024 tour, where she'll be stopping in Nashville.

Wilson arrived in a metallic red top, a tan suede cowboy hat with rhinestones, and equally shiny signature bell bottoms to match her top.

Wilson sang with an earnest country grit that Nashvillians know to be true. Elated to announce a guest who also took the stage at Thursday's show, Wilson said, "I'm such a fan of this man off and on the stage. Give it up for my friend with the biggest heart of somebody you will ever meet, my boy Jelly Roll!"

Wilson and Jelly sang their hit "Save Me," a remix release from earlier this year. Their harmonies soared throughout the auditorium with a country twang.

Wilson ended her set with hit "Watermelon Moonshine," introducing the song by asking the audience to think back to their first loves when they were in high school. Wilson transported the audience back to when they were 16, taking a moment to reflect on the transformative moments that stick in our memory long after they've passed.

In her sweet Louisiana drawl, Wilson sang alongside her audience, "Too young to know what love was / But we were learnin' on a sweet buzz / There's never nothin' like the first time / And mine's always gonna taste like / Watermelon moonshine."

HARDY'S hard rock country swagger

After Wilson's set, HARDY hit the stage. He wore a black cut-off tank top that showed off his sleeve of tattoos, occasionally donning a baseball cap when he wasn’t head-banging and flipping his hair to the beat.

HARDY, who is known for being a country outlaw who leaves expectations behind, only solidified that reputation Friday.

Opening song "The Mockingbird & the Crow" included gritty, screaming vocals with columns of white smoke and spurts of fire. The song was supported by visuals of birds flying on the screen behind HARDY as red and orange lights flashed on stage.

The evening was interlaced with mementos of hard rock, from a rocking shirtless drummer to a bustling, moshing crowd. Electric guitar ran underneath the evening's set list, alongside pulsing drums and gritty vocals.

A night of duets: Lauren Alaina, Lainey Wilson

HARDY welcomed Lauren Alaina to the stage to sing "One Beer" alongside him, a song that he dedicated to the pregnant women in the crowd. Alaina hit the stage in a black dress with silver studs, singing the narrative country hit with HARDY to fans' excitement.

The two harmonized on the chorus, singing, "First comes lust then a shotgun marriage / Six months later, comes a baby in a carriage / That's not all, that's not all / Here we go again drinkin' alcohol, yeah."

Later in the evening, HARDY brought out opener Wilson to sing their 2023 song "Wait in the Truck," which quickly became one of the evening's highlights. Another storytelling masterpiece, the two opened the song singing, "I got turned around in some little town / I'd never been to before / Working my way through a middle-of-June / Midnight thunderstorm."

HARDY's mental health journey

After struggling with anxiety and panic attacks earlier this month, HARDY canceled a few shows to focus on himself.

Since his  tour bus overturned last year in Nashville, HARDY has been struggling with navigating anxiety and panic attacks. The accident affected four passengers onboard: HARDY, his tour manager, videographer and driver. Though most passengers onboard suffered serious injuries, all survived.

At Friday's show, HARDY addressed his mental health journey, saying, "I'm sure 90% of this room has seen my announcement I had to make at the beginning of the month talking about how I had to cancel shows because I had some mental stuff going on. And I would like to address that right now.

"If you are somebody, and chances are there's a lot of you in this room, that suffers from anxiety, that suffers from depression, I want you to know that you are not alone. Cause this dude right here goes through it," HARDY said, motioning to himself.

"If you're a skeptic, I just want you to give the people that have it and the people that go through it a little grace. Because, I can be honest with you, I've played in front of 80,000 people, I've done a lot of s*** I should be terrified of, that's one of the most terrifying experiences I've ever had," HARDY said of anxiety, thanking his fans for being patient with him throughout his recovery.

HARDY went on to sing song "Screen," a 2023 song about disconnecting from social media, asking the fans to put down their phones for the duration of the song.

HARDY's encore

HARDY truly shined on an encore of some of his most notable songs.

Opening the encore with "Truck Bed," HARDY returned to the stage wearing a Nashville Predators jersey, with number 22, donning a wide smile. He chanted his 2023 hit, singing, "I woke up on the wrong side of the truck bed this morning / With a bone dry bottle of Jack I was pouring," alongside an audience fueled off of Jack Daniels, wearing cowboy hats and boots themselves.

HARDY followed with 2018's "Rednecker." Southern pride bled through the performance as images of hunting, fishing and driving through the rural countryside were projected on the screen behind him while he sang.

And then "Sold Out" closed the set. The crowd stomped, sang and chanted as HARDY proclaimed, "Wall to wall and I still ain't sold out."

Blake shelton gushes over gwen stefani’s support at ole red las vegas opening (exclusive).

blake shelton tour 2023 song list

Las Vegas just got a little more country with Blake Shelton’s new live music spot Ole Red Bar.

“Extra’s” Alecia Davis spoke with Blake about the grand opening and having his wife Gwen Stefani with him up onstage!

Referencing Gwen’s Coachella performance with No Doubt, Blake commented, “I was excited she did it because she's had a hell of a week.”

The Coachella performance was the first time that Gwen and No Doubt reunited in nine years!

When asked what Stefani’s support meant to him, Shelton gushed, “It’s everything. I mean, that's my wife. And she's never not been there to support me. It's just such a comforting thing to know she has my back. She's my best friend, and it's not something we just say. It's in our actions. We are as supportive of each other as we can be.”

Blake and Gwen are loving the farm life on their Oklahoma ranch.

Blake commented, “I love being on the tractor. It's like my getaway. That is my vacation or hobby. I’m no good at it, let’s be honest. It’s a disaster. I got a guy that works for me on the ranch that after I leave town, he’ll come in behind me and like fix it and get it right, like how it should be. But nobody has more fun doing it than I do.”

Blake even got Gwen to join him.

How does a city girl like Gwen becomes a country girl?

Blake answered, “Well, flowers. It’s hard to get her excited about a stock of corn growing, but if you can get her some zinnias going, now she's fired up. Now she wants to be a farmer.”

For Christmas, Blake gifted zinnia seeds to Gwen. He shared, “I got that. I got her sunflower seeds. You name it, if it can grow in Oklahoma, I probably got it for her.”

To cover his bases, Shelton also got jewelry for Stefani. He quipped, “I’m not sure which is more expensive either. I don’t know if you’ve tried some of that flower stuff... holy sh*t.”

Shelton was stoked to launch his sixth and largest Ole Red Bar right on the Strip.

He said, “It’s not something I think most artists think are in the cards, to be part of something like this outside of making music records and touring. To be able to have a venue that also represents you musically and what you do. And so, I got super lucky this all worked out.”

Blake is also fired up to hit the road again and thrill fans with all his hits on his Honky Tonk tour.

While Blake has missed touring life, he admitted, “I was a little bit nervous. I’m always nervous at the start of my tours. I don’t know why after this many years. It’s simple things I worry about like the lyrics to my song or are people gonna come to the shows? Literally, those are the two things that I stress about.”

As for the possibility of returning to “The Voice,” Blake revealed, “I don’t plan on ever, like working at ‘The Voice’ again. I can’t say I wouldn’t come by for, like, a surprise appearance. I mean, that show is the greatest and most important thing that I’ve ever been a part of in my career. It changed my life, and I’ll always be grateful for that.”

Though he’s not sitting in the famous red chairs anymore, Shelton is still watching the show!

He commented, “I do watch it a little bit, especially when Gwen’s on there. She’s still in and out, and she’s so good at it. She loves the show. She always said to me, ‘How can you want to step away? It’s so fun.’ I’ve done it 23 seasons without missing a single season. I know what you feel like, Pat Sajak, because that’s kinda how I felt being on ‘The Voice.’ If you’re on back-to-back seasons, there’s really no time for any other thing. I guess if you didn’t want to have a family and a life, you could do it that much, but something has to give, and for me, I was to the point where it was time for ‘The Voice’ to be the thing that has to give this time. So, I’m just at that stage in my life.”

Blake Shelton Just Revealed He Doesn't Miss 'The Voice' At All

He said he would only return under one circumstance.

preview for “The Voice” Coaches: Past and Present

Shelton has been a mainstay on the popular singing competition show since its very first season in 2011. He coached up promising artists on Team Blake for a total of 23 seasons (that's 12 whole years!). In an interview with Entertainment Tonight , Shelton explained that after such a long stint on The Voice , his heart just wasn't in it anymore.

"I totally needed a break from that because if I wasn’t into it, then it wasn’t good for whoever was on my team,” he explained. “I don’t want to be someone who’s just going through the motions. Those artists need somebody fighting for them."

The seemingly revolving door of coaches every season on the show didn't help Shelton's situation either. "The second I started feeling like, ‘Oh my gosh, I don’t even remember what season this is anymore. Who are the coaches on this season?’ [I knew that] I needed [to get] away from here," he added.

Shelton emphasized that he doesn't "miss the job at all," but he does miss certain aspects of his coaching role. "I miss the people. I mean, those people became like family to me, literally from the crew all up to the producers of the show. I was with them more than I was with my family… I miss that," Shelton reminisced.

Of course, plenty of good things came from Shelton's time on The Voice, including meeting his now-wife, Gwen Stefani . The "Hollaback Girl" songstress came on as a coach for season 7.

the voice season 7

"The first season she was on The Voice we met [but] we really didn't talk that much... If you would've told me the first season that we met that what was gonna happen, I would've been like, 'No, we actually don't even have anything to even talk about. What are you talking about?' It's crazy how things work out," Shelton recalled.

Even good things must come to an end, and has time has passed Shelton is confident he made the right decision in leaving, "every day feels a little bit better," he said.

the voice press junket

For now Shelton has closed that chapter of his life, but he did say he would return to The Voice under special circumstances: if all four original coaches come back together. Shelton coached the first season of The Voice alongside Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera, and Cee-Lo Green.

"If they were ever able to put together the original four coaches again, maybe [I’d return] for one season, a one-off,” Shelton told ET. “That would be fun for me… That would be something I would be interested in doing."

Jim Gilio, Harris Hartman, Shelby Weiser

Jim Gilio, Harris Hartman, Shelby Weiser

Sloane Offer Weber & Dern

Firm veterans Gilio, Hartman and Weiser collaborate on various clients, including actors such as “Palme Royale” co-star Kaia Gerber (Gilio & Hartman), Daniel Ings of “The Gentlemen” (Gilio & Weiser) and “The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem” lead Swell Ariel Or (Hartman & Weiser). Each also has an impressive roster they work with separately. For Weiser, it’s Lily James, Paul Giamatti, Chloe Grace Moretz, Haley Lu Richardson, Gal Gadot and Nicholas Hoult. For Gilio, it’s Angourie Rice, Jennifer Coolidge, Isla Fisher and Naomi Scott. Hartman’s clients include Jack Quaid, Amy Adams, Rooney Mara, Margaret Qualley, Hunter Schafer, Jennifer Garner, Jenna Fischer and David Harbour.  But, says Gilio, “we all work very closely together, even on the clients we don’t co-rep, just trying to figure out the best way to represent them.”

Production bubble boost: “I know the conventional wisdom is that there’s a been a contraction,” says Hartman. “But I feel the runaway frenzy of recent times is continuing unabated.”

Warren Dern

Warren Dern

Dern had several deals put on ice by the strikes in 2023, uncertain if they’d ever be revived, but, overall, things worked out well for his clients, such as director Paul Feig, whose delayed sequel “A Simple Favor 2” began shooting in Italy this spring. The three-decade veteran’s roster also includes actors Jack Black, Jason Segal, Renee Rapp, Rebel Wilson, Isla Fisher and Cara Delevingne, and directors Zack Snyder, Todd Phillips and Spike Jonze.

Post-strike deal momentum: “It’s like a train that got stopped, and now it’s moving again,” he says. “And I think people are happy to be on the train.”

Robert Offer

Robert Offer

Offer’s client roster features 2024 Oscar nominees Ryan Gosling and Paul Giamatti and other big names including Brie Larson, Tom Holland, Adam Driver, Robert Pattinson, Keri Russell and Benedict Cumberbatch. But his most significant recent matter was repping longtime client Will Arnett on his end of the $100 million multi-year deal between SiriusXM and SmartLess Media, the company the actor formed with Jason Bateman and Sean Hayes to produce their “SmartLess” podcast.

Strikes rebound: “It was bad as I’ve ever seen it,” says the three-decade-plus legal eagle. “But there’s still big demand for content and I’m confident that we’ll come back.”

Jason Sloane

Jason Sloane

Since December, Sloane has been dealing with a post-strike deal flow he compares to a long line of planes waiting for takeoff on the tarmac, as he’s worked on behalf of clients such as actors Anne Hathaway, Mark Wahlberg, Morgan Freeman, Hugh Jackman, Will Smith, Amy Adams, Keira Knightley, Chris Evans, Chris Pratt, Tom Hardy, Michael Fassbender and Taron Egerton, talk show host James Corden and his Fulwell 73 banner and director James Mangold.

Looming possibility of more strikes: “I think maybe people are trying to be blissfully ignorant to it,” Sloane says. “It’s hard for them to fathom that it could be happening again.”

David Weber

David Weber

Weber’s clients have a tendency to do well at the Oscars. This year, Cillian Murphy won actor honors for “Oppenheimer,” while Emily Blunt scored a supporting actress nomination for the film. He also reps past actor Oscar-winners (Joaquin Phoenix and Rami Malk) and Academy Award nominees Austin Butler, Barry Keoghan and Andrew Garfield, along with Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Alison Brie, Rob McElhenney and Lily James.

Bonuses award by platforms for streaming success: “They’re not uniform, they’re still imperfect,” Weber says. More significantly, “there’s no transparency in the actual data.”

Daniel Rozansky, Greg Akselrud, Kelly Siobhan Laffey, Celina Kirchner

Rozansky: Partner Akselrud: Partner, Chair of Internet, Digital Media & Entertainment Practice Laffey: Partner Kirchner: Senior Counsel

Stubbs Alderton & Markiles

According to Rozansky, he, Akselrud, Laffey and Kirchner appreciate the ability to work closely together and share their mutual expertise to give clients the most personal and expert service. In 2023, Akselrud was involved in financing or acquisition transactions for more than a dozen digital media companies and sports retailers, and represented the late Leonard Cohen’s estate in its catalog sale to Hipgnosis. Laffey, alongside Akselrud, counseled in a range of matters for concerns as varied as an elite coffee brand and several hot production companies. Rozansky achieved a favorable settlement in a right of publicity and copyright action he brought on behalf of prominent Southern California insurance broker Adriana Gallardo, a case with strong AI implications going forward. Kirchner represents a growing digital media production company in contract disputes and advises on contract negotiation and strategy. She and Rozansky have successfully represented top producers of unscripted television series on issues unique to that entertainment space. Most recently they settled, for a nominal amount, an arbitration by two former show participants seeking a multimillion-dollar award.

Protection: Rozansky predicts “the growth of AI is going to create an onslaught of legal issues, from how to protect original content created by it, to how to protect original content used to train it. This is going to be a complex challenge for entertainment and IP lawyers alike, particularly until there is a well-developed body of law on this subject.”

Marc Toberoff

Marc Toberoff

Founding Partner

Toberoff & Associates

In the ongoing challenge of defending and enhancing the rights of writers and artists in the stories and characters they have created, Toberoff is a dedicated advocate, saying, “I never back down from a David vs. Goliath battle.” In 2023, he settled five major cases on behalf of the creators of numerous superheroes, including Iron Man, Thor, Doctor Strange, Ant-Man, Captain Marvel, Blade and Black Widow. He also successfully settled a copyright dispute with Paramount on behalf of James Dearden, writer-director of the short film that inspired the hit feature “Fatal Attraction” (which Dearden also penned). Toberoff is entering 2024 in the midst of a possibly landmark case on behalf of the writer of the original “Road House” feature.

Opportunities ahead: “With the advent of streaming, and with all studios cutting back on theatrical film releases and the associated diminution of meaningful back-end for talent, ‘the times, they are a changin’,’” he says. “Unless talent and their reps embrace change, they will lose. If, however, they take more of the essential elements of content production into their own hands, the economics will be transformational.”

Michael B. Garfinkel

Michael B. Garfinkel

Some 20 years ago, Garfinkel was tapped to represent a client suing on the grounds of defamation, and he recalls the judge in the case asking “Defamation? Is that still a thing?” It was and is, and proved to be a cornerstone of two of Garfinkel’s 2023 high-profile actions. Glass House Brands, California’s largest vertically integrated cannabis company, filed suit against a competitor who had called them the industry’s “biggest black marketeer.” And the band All Time Low accused of — and adamantly denying — inappropriate fan conduct by anonymous online posters, has sued for interference with its business. Both cases highlight the increasingly important need to keep an eye on those who would employ the freedom and anonymity of online for mischief, or worse.

Words to the (un)wise: “People mistakenly believe that they can get away with defamation on social media where outrageous statements are commonly made, or by simply inserting the term ‘allegedly’ or the phrase ‘in my opinion.’ The rise of social media has given everyone a potential platform, but those who speak do so at their own risk,” he says.

Joshua M. Rosenberg

Joshua M. Rosenberg

As a litigator, Rosenberg has represented some of the biggest names in the industry, from Nicki Minaj, Lana Del Rey, Lindsey Stirling, Sofi Tukker, AEG Live and Legendary Pictures. He also repped Ariana Grande in a high-profile dispute that involved her cosmetics brand R.E.M. Beauty. Working with Venable’s bankruptcy and litigation teams, Rosenberg navigated complex issues of corporate law and ultimately enabled the superstar to regain control of her brand. He also represents Jason Derulo and Sony Music Entertainment in defending an ongoing copyright lawsuit relating to Derulo’s chart-topping song “Savage Love.”

Live action: “I’m glad we’re back to litigating in person. On a screen, you cannot see the bead of sweat on a witness’s brow when they pause to answer a question. You cannot adequately evaluate a judge’s expression during an online argument.”

Weinstein and Senior are counsel and strategic advisors to Jimmy Donaldson, also known to millions of fans as MrBeast. They also facilitated the structure and negotiation for talent deals for a Meta initiative on behalf of their client B17. Through the project, Weinstein Senior supported Meta’s creation of an AI platform in collaboration with notables including Tom Brady. The firm engineered a collaboration between soccer superstar Lionel Messi and Apple TV+ on behalf of its client Smuggler Entertainment.

Helping clients: “ I like protecting people,” says Senior. Adds Weinstein, “I like collaborating with our clients to help them be in a better position than where we found them.”

Alan Epstein

Alan Epstein

Partner, Chair of Entertainment Transactions Practice

Willkie Farr & Gallagher

Epstein represented talent management and production company Brillstein Entertainment Partners in its sale to Wasserman Media Group. He advised Hyphenate Media Group, the newly launched production studio founded by actor-director Eva Longoria and producer Cris Abrego, with a focus on developing multicultural content, in its strategic partnership with global production giant Banijay. Client Ryan Reynolds, who has “Deadpool & Wolverine” on tap,  continues to reap the benefits from the sale of Mint Mobile of which he was part-owner to T-Mobile for a reported $1.35 billion.

Open lane: “The management company lane continues to be an interesting one. Management companies are very strategic assets in the media landscape. Scale matters and it’s getting harder for many of the smaller management companies to compete given their limited infrastructure and internal resources.”

Gellman has been closing deals for a large stable of comics including Sebastian Maniscalco, Andrew Schulz and Shane Gillis, putting them everywhere from film and TV screens to, in the case of Alex Adelson and his one-person show “Just for Us,” the Broadway stage.  Other clients include “Bluey” creator Joe Brumm, director Lulu Wang (Amazon’s “Expats”) and social influencer Hailey Bieber, the latter of whom he shares with partners Kevin Yorn and Cary Dobkin.

Stand-up flourishes: “Now you have Hulu and Amazon anxious to develop their libraries and competing on a financial level, so it’s created much more of an actual free market,” he says.

Jared Levine

Jared Levine

A four-decade veteran, Levine still works with some of his earliest clients, including Eugene Levy, producer Dan Sackheim (“True Detective”) and writer-producer Graham Yost (“Masters of the Air”), while cutting deals for newer arrivals such as Ramy Youssef (HBO special “Ramy Youssef: More Feelings”), Shane Gillis (Netflix series “Tires”), Rachel Sennott (HBO comedy pilot) and Stephen Curry and Erick Peyton’s Unanimous Media (Peacock series “Mr. Throwback”). Other clients include Jordan Peele, Aziz Ansari, Colin Jost, writer-producer Bill Lawrence (“Ted Lasso”) and ESPN commentator Michael Wilbon.

Second-hand strike stress: “If you’re human, you can’t help but sometimes channel your client’s anxiety,”he says.

Kevin Yorn

Managing Partner

Yorn signed Jonah Hill and top Gen Z digital influencer Alix Earle, adding to a starry client list that also includes Scarlett Johansson, Matthew McConaughey, Hailey Bieber, Elliot Page, Eva Longoria, Stephen Curry, Jason Sudeikis, director Hwang Dong-hyuk (“Squid Game”) and Korean shingle Galaxy Corp. (Netflix’s “Physical: 100”). He also has Broadlight Capital, an investment firm he co-founded with David Dorfman and his brother Rick Yorn, which launched a $225 million debut fund in May 2023 to back growth-stage tech companies.

Podcasts still a growth industry: “ I predict they’ll end up closing in on film and television at some point,” he says.

Dean Bahat, Benjamin Rubinfeld

Bahat and Rubinfeld have been working alongside each other at Ziffren Brittenham for some 10 years and share many clients. Together, they closed deals for writers Jimmy Warden (Universal comedy “Naughty”), Justin Kuritzkes (Luca Guadagnino’s adaptation of William Burrough’s novel “Queer”), actor Danielle Deadwyler (Blumhouse’s “The Woman in the Yard”), TikTok star Brian Jordan Alvarez (FX series “English Teacher”) and shingle Borderlight (New Line’s “Weapons”). Bahat’s personal roster includes Cord Jefferson (“American Fiction”), Nathan Fielder (“The Curse”), Stephanie Hsui (“Laid”), Maude Apatow (“Euphoria”) and Working Title (“Crime 101”), while Rubinfeld handles Joel McHale (“House of Villains,” “Crime Scene Kitchen”), actor Alex Hodges (“Alex Cross”), multi-hyphenate Jenna Lamia (“The Perfect Couple”) and writers Colin Bannon (“Long Lost”) and Julia Cox (“Nyad”).

Potential factors affecting production slowdown: “It’s the cost of money, the ease of borrowing, whether companies are being valued based on growth or cash flow,” says Bahat. “All of these things have an impact on our buyers.”

John Branca

John Branca

Partner, Head of Music

Legacy acts and the protection of their oeuvres dominate Branca’s practice. As the co-manager of the Michael Jackson estate, he guided the Tony award-winning “MJ the Musical,” executive produced the “Thriller 40” Showtime documentary and serves as a producer on the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic. Additionally, Branca negotiated on behalf of the Bee Gees for a biopic currently in development at Paramount and negotiated licenses on behalf of the Elvis Presley estate for Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis.” He also handled catalog sales for Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek of the Doors.

Long live rock: “Ticket sales for live events have never been bigger,” Branca says.  “There was a time when people felt that legacy artists were going to vanish,” he says. “Instead, they’ve come back stronger than ever.”

David Byrnes, David Lande

David Byrnes, David Lande

Byrnes and Lande handled various aspects of client Beyoncé’s 2023 Renaissance World Tour, from striking a deal with Live Nation Entertainment for the concerts to negotiating directly with AMC Theatres for the international release of the concert film. Separately, Byrnes reps Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton, while Lande handles Justin Timberlake, Justin Bieber, Shakira, Olivia Rodrigo, Pharell and Rosalia.

AI music conundrum: “Some people say that if it’s a good pop song, it doesn’t matter if it’s created by a computer,” says Lande. “But it will never fully replace [music made by humans] because the consumer wants to understand who’s creating the music and what their story is.”

Post Malone's Country Roots: 8 Key Moments In Covers and Collaborations

Ahead of Posty's upcoming performance at the Stagecoach Festival, catch up on the many ways he's been dabbling in country music since the beginning of his career.

Since Post Malone burst onto the mainstream nearly a decade ago, he has continued to flaunt his genre-defying brand of musical brilliance. For his latest venture, it’s time for gold grills and cowboy hats: Posty’s going country.

Though his musical origins are in rap, Malone has seamlessly traversed pop, R&B, and blues, always hinting at his deep-seated country roots along the way. In the last year, his long-standing affinity for country music has moved to the forefront, with appearances at the CMA Awards, a country-tinged Super Bowl LVIII performance, and a feature on Beyoncé ’s COWBOY CARTER . Next up, he’ll make his debut at California's Stagecoach Festival alongside some of country music’s biggest names — and pay tribute to some of the genre greats.

While it’s unclear exactly what the Texas-raised hitmaker will be singing, his 45-minute set on Saturday, April 27 is labeled “Post Malone: Performs a special set of country covers.” After years of performing covers for and alongside country stars, the performance is arguably one of the most full-circle moments of his career thus far.

Ahead of his Stagecoach premiere, read on for some of Posty's biggest nods and contributions to the country music scene over the years — that could culminate in his own country album soon enough.

A Slew Of Classic Country Music Covers

Malone has a history of channeling his musical heroes, often pulling on his boots to deliver heartfelt covers. He's paid tribute to country icons many times, including covers of Hank Williams Jr .'s classic, "There's A Tear In My Beer” in a 2018 fan-favorite video .

During a 2022 Billy Strings tour stop at The Observatory in Los Angeles, Malone made a surprise appearance and used the moment to honor Johnny Cash alongside Strings. The pair delivered an acoustic duet of Cash's infamous murder ballad, "Cocaine Blues."

And just this year, Malone covered Hank Williams Sr. during a surprise performance at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium. On April 3, he closed out the annual Bobby Bones' Million Dollar Show with a rendition of Williams' "Honky Tonk Blues."

A Longtime Kinship With Dwight Yoakam

Malone has long collaborated with Dwight Yoakam , marking a friendship and professional partnership that spans his career. Yoakam is a GRAMMY-winning trailblazer known for his pioneering blend of honky tonk, rock and punk that shook up the country scene in the 80's with his blend of "cowpunk."

The pair frequently joined forces on Yoakam's SiriusXM Radio spot "Greater Bakersfield," where one standout 2018 appearance features Malone covering Yoakam's own “Thousand Miles From Nowhere” as the two laugh, strum and belt out the lyrics together in perfect harmony.

On April Fool's Day in 2021, they playfully teased fans with the prospect of a double country album release — which may not seem so far-fetched three years later.

It's fitting that Malone would find such deep inspiration in folks like Yoakam, a man who first rode onto the country scene with a new take on a traditional sound. Much like Yoakam bridged generations with his music, Malone brings a new yet familiar energy to the country scene, embodying the spirit of a modern cowboy in both style and sound.

A Country Tribute To Elvis

Malone teamed up with Keith Urban for a duet rendition of "Baby, What You Want Me to Do" during the "Elvis All-Star Tribute Special," which aired on NBC in 2019. Originally written and performed by blues musician and songwriter Jimmy Reed , "Baby, What You Want Me to Do" was famously covered by Presley and commemorated through Urban and Malone's unique blend of modern guitar-slapping country-rock charisma.

That wasn't Malone's only country collab that night, either. He also covered Presley's "Blue Suede Shoes" alongside Blake Shelton , Little Big Town and Mac Davis .

A Celebration Of Texas With Country Legends

In March 2021, Matthew McConaughey and his wife, Camila, hosted the "We’re Texas" virtual benefit concert, to help Texans coping with that year's disastrous winter storms during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Following performances by George Strait , Kacey Musgraves , Willie Nelson , and Miranda Lambert , Malone — who moved to Dallas when he was 10 — served as the night's final entertainer. He performed Brad Paisley 's "I'm Gonna Miss Her" followed by Sturgill Simpson 's "You Can Have The Crown" backed by Dwight Yoakam.

A Rousing Tribute At The 2023 CMA Awards

At the 2023 CMA Awards, Malone joined country stars Morgan Wallen and HARDY on stage to cover late icon Joe Diffie ‘s “Pickup Man” and "John Deere Green." Malone's first-ever performance at the CMAs felt more like a reunion than a debut, with Malone right at home among his collaborators.

“I’ve manifested this for years," HARDY told Audacy's Katie Neal. "Slight flex here, but I started following [Post Malone] when he had like, 300k Instagram followers. I was on the 'White Iverson' terrain, like the first thing that he ever put out and I was like, ‘this is dope,’ and I've been with him ever since.”

After the performance, Malone hinted to Access Hollywood that it might be the start of a new chapter. When asked if a forthcoming country album would be in the works, he answered, “I think so. Yes, ma'am.” (More on that later.)

A Countrified Appearance At Super Bowl LVIII

View this post on Instagram A post shared by NFL (@nfl)

Before Beyoncé announced COWBOY CARTER in a Verizon Super Bowl ad , Malone offered Super Bowl Sunday's first country-themed clue at the top of the night with his tender rendition of "America The Beautiful." Sporting a bolo tie and brown suede, Malone delivered his patriotic performance with a characteristically country drawl while strumming along on acoustic guitar before Reba McIntire 's star-spangled rendition of the national anthem.

Malone's performance followed in the footsteps of a long line of country artists who have kicked off the national sporting event, which started with Charley Pride in 1974 and has included Shania Twain , Faith Hill and Garth Brooks .

A Tip Of The Hat To Toby Keith

During a performance at the American Rodeo in Arlington, Texas, on March 9, Malone paid tribute to the late Toby Keith , who passed away in February . After pouring one out and taking a sip from a red solo cup (an homage to Keith's playful hit of the same name), Malone performed a cover of "As Good As I Once Was" for the Texas rodeo crowd.

His TikTok video of the performance quickly garnered over 4 million views, sparking enthusiasm among fans for more country music from him. "Sir. I'm now begging for a country album," wrote one user in a comment that has received over 11,000 hearts.

A (Potential) Full-On Country Album

View this post on Instagram A post shared by @postmalone

His much-teased country album may not be too yonder. After confirming that a country album was in the works during a live Twitch stream on his channel, Malone has spent much of this year teasing forthcoming new work. There is no scheduled album release date as of press time, but Malone has shared snippets of new songs including “ Missin’ You Like This” and dropped sneak peeks of collaborations with Morgan Wallen, HARDY, Ernest, and Luke Combs .

In February, Malone posted a sample of a collaboration with Combs, "I Ain't Got A Guy For That," the first in a series of song snippets shared across his social channels.

On March 20, Malone posted a reel to Instagram featuring a video of himself seated on a stool, smoking a cigarette and singing along to a track that opens with Wallen singing, “It takes two to break a heart in two,” as Malone comes in to deliver a blow with the line, “Baby you blame me, and baby I’ll blame you." The track, shared with the caption (and supposed song title) "I had some help," was first announced in a now-deleted social media post by Wallen at the end of 2023.

No matter when the album may come, Post Malone’s Stagecoach set will only up the anticipation for some original country music from the star — and from the looks of it, fans and genre stars alike are more than ready for it.

Before the country music festival returns to the California desert April 26-28, get to know some of the most buzzworthy artists set to take this year's Stagecoach Festival by storm.

In a matter of days, some of country music's best and most promising acts will come together in Indio, California for Stagecoach Festival 2024. The annual event has spotlighted an eclectic mix of talent since 2007, but this year's impressive roster of performers helped Stagecoach earn its largest number of ticket sales in the festival's 17-year history .

Held April 28-30 at the Empire Polo Club — the same scenic desert landscape as the long-running Coachella Music and Arts Festival — this year's Stagecoach Festival offers a diverse blend of artists that spans from headliners like Miranda Lambert and Eric Church to surf-pop icons the Beach Boys , hit rockers Nickelback and hip-hop star Post Malone .

Along with this diverse roster of superstars, the 2024 Stagecoach lineup is filled with a captivating list of artists on the rise. From a singer/songwriter enjoying a much-deserved comeback to a skillful 25-year-old putting his own spin on the '90s country sound, this year's crop of talent is paving the way for the future of country music.

Stagecoach Festival 2024 is completely sold out, but country fans who didn't snag their ticket in time can still enjoy all the festivities by streaming performances live via Amazon Prime all weekend long. Before you head out into the California sun or get cozy in front of your TV, take a moment to learn more about these 12 must-see acts coming to Stagecoach this year.

Tanner Adell

Since the release of Beyoncé 's country-inspired album COWBOY CARTER , singer/songwriter Tanner Adell has become one of the genre's most talked about new artists. Before she was tapped as a guest vocalist on Beyoncé's cover of the Beatles ' classic "Blackbird," and original track "AMERIICAN REQUIEM," Adell had already garnered a dedicated fan base online.

Thanks to viral hits like "Buckle Bunny," the playful title track of her 2023 debut album, the Nashville-based talent has earned praise from both critics and country listeners worldwide. From heartfelt ballads to beat-driven bops made to get you on the dance floor, Adell blends elements of radio-ready modern country and rhythmic hip-hop with ease.

Adell's Saturday performance at Stagecoach promises to be a fiery and fun showcase of her polished pop-country songbook.

While growing up in Washington state, Zach Top forged a deep connection to the sound of traditional country music . From Marty Robbins to Keith Whitley , the influence of the genre's past is deeply entwined in every track of the talented 25-year-old's brand new record, Cold Beer & Country Music .

Top's 12-track LP has earned plenty of buzz for its new take on the neo-traditionalist style that dominated country radio in the late 1980s and early '90s. With engaging vocals reminiscent of the late Daryle Singletary and thoughtful lyricism, Zach Top provides a fresh new take on a familiar and formative sound.

Brittney Spencer

Over the past five years, Brittney Spencer has repeatedly proven why she's one of the most important and captivating voices within modern country music. From her acclaimed 2021 single "Sober & Skinny'' to her celebrated collaboration with country supergroup The Highwomen, Spencer's vocals are consistently as emotive as they are effortless.

Spencer's charismatic personality and boundless energy take center stage through every performance, making her live shows a can't-miss event. Her Sunday afternoon set at Stagecoach offers a chance to hear cuts from her stellar debut album, My Stupid Life, which dropped in January.

Vincent Neil Emerson

Texas native Vincent Neil Emerson first earned widespread praise with the 2019 release of his debut album, Fried Chicken and Evil Women, earning him comparisons to influential artists like Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt. His narrative-driven lyrics and hauntingly raw vocals have won the hearts of country fans far outside the Texas plains.

Over the years, he's collaborated with fellow alt-country favorite Colter Wall and recruited the creative genius of Rodney Crowell, who serves as producer on Emerson's self-titled 2021 LP. With his most recent album, the Shooter Jennings -produced The Golden Crystal Kingdom, Emerson once again channels the old-school magic of the traditional country that only comes from a rare type of Texas troubadour.

Katie Pruitt

Although Katie Pruitt has been locally lauded as among the best of Nashville's modern crop of singer/songwriters for years, her rise into the mainstream is still overdue. The Georgia native's stunning 2020 debut album, Expectations, was hailed for its raw honesty and effortless vocal intricacies.

When she takes the stage during the final day of Stagecoach 2024, Pruitt will be armed with a brand new batch of awe-inspiring songs. Released on April 5, her sophomore album, Mantras , delivers an unpredictable, genre-bending sound that displays a sense of artistry far beyond her years. Don't miss your chance to see Pruitt's mesmerizing live set, which is guaranteed to have you dancing and maybe even wiping away a few tears.

In just a few short years, beloved Mexican singer/songwriter Carin León has evolved from a regional hitmaker to an internationally known talent. His reflective and honest songs have connected with audiences globally, becoming one of Spotify's most streamed modern Mexican artists.

Earlier this year, the two-time Latin GRAMMY-winner made his Grand Ole Opry debut, and will serve as the opening act for rock legends the Rolling Stones ' Hackney Diamonds Tour when it heads to Glendale, Ariz. this May. (And just one week before his Stagecoach debut, he also made his Coachella debut.) Fans who catch his Friday set may be lucky enough to see a live rendition of "It Was Always You (Siempre Fuiste Tú)," his fresh collaboration with fellow Stagecoach 2024 artist Leon Bridges .

Trampled By Turtles

Thanks to their unique blend of bluegrass, folk, country, and a dash of rock and roll, Minnesota-based outfit Trampled by Turtles has become a music festival staple — and will make their third Stagecoach appearance (and first in 10 years) on Saturday. Their high-energy live sets channel the psychedelic magic of rock's jam band scene, subbing plucky acoustic instrumentation in the place of rolling electric guitar.

The long-running band will treat fans to an array of tracks from their impressive career, which spans 10 albums, including their critically praised 2022 LP, Alpenglow . Even if you aren't already familiar with Trampled by Turtles' extensive list of releases, you're sure to be captivated by their hypnotizing performance style and positive energy that radiates from the live stage.

Charley Crockett

Texas-born talent Charley Crockett is one of few modern artists who have proven worthy enough for the coveted title of "troubadour." The seasoned singer/songwriter's appearance at Stagecoach will coincide with the release of $10 Cowboy, his soulful and synth-tinged 16th studio album.

Crockett's mix of traditional country and thoughtful folk, infused with gritty 1970s pop, creates a nostalgic charm that captivates the live stage. His descriptive story songs and distinctive twang echo the genre's early greats while expanding those classic country themes into new and surprising sonic territory. His Stagecoach 2024 set is sure to deliver a blend of fresh album cuts along with fan favorites from his already-expansive catalog.

You may know Lola Kirke as an accomplished actress in both television and film, but the British talent is also one of country music's most surprising new artists. Her stylized mix of traditional country and edgy pop-rock is refreshingly fun and tailor-made for Stagecoach's good-time vibe.

In recent months, Kirke has shared a string of infectious singles leading up to the release of her latest EP, Country Curious . In March, she dropped a stellar take on the Paula Cole classic "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?" featuring Stagecoach 2023 alumni Kaitlin Butts . Make sure you clean off your boots before Kirke's set, because there's a good chance she'll have a very special line dance lesson ready for the crowd.

Willie Jones

For nearly a decade, Louisiana-born talent Willie Jones has captivated country fans with fresh and genre-bending tracks, propelled by deep, rich vocals. Since first making waves with his rendition of Josh Turner 's "Your Man" during an audition for "The X-Factor" in 2012, Jones has been paving his own path in the genre.

He's recorded two full-length records, including his irresistible 2023 LP Something to Dance To . His Stagecoach set will certainly be a boot-stomper, offering concertgoers a chance to experience the magic captured on his latest EP, The Live Sessions , which arrived on April 5.

Missouri native Sam Barber has evolved from a hopeful musician to a viral sensation with a major-label record deal. While passing the time at college, the gifted 20-year-old began recording covers of his favorite country tracks and shared them on TikTok, quickly garnering thousands of eager listeners. His down-to-earth charm, paired with surprisingly seasoned and gritty vocals, also earned the attention of Atlantic Records.

In 2023, they shared Barber's debut EP, Million Eyes , which spawned the breakthrough radio single "Straight and Narrow." Now, fresh off the release of Live EP 001 and a string of new singles, Barber will bring his thoughtful yet edgy country sound to Stagecoach, marking another rapidfire career accomplishment.

Luke Grimes

Although you may know him best for his role as the chaotic charmer Kayce Dutton on the acclaimed television series "Yellowstone," Luke Grimes' creative talents expand far outside the small screen. A lifelong musician and lover of country music, Grimes took the stage at Stagecoach 2023 in support of his debut EP, Pain Pills or Pews . The project's raw and honest tracks earned critical acclaim and quickly led Grimes back into the studio, tapping Dave Cobb as producer for his vulnerable new self-titled LP, which arrived on March 8.

Whether you're a longtime fan of his acting or an already devoted listener, Grimes' set marks a pivotal moment in his ever-evolving musical career — and one of many can't-miss moments at this year's Stagecoach Festival.

Taylor Swift's 'The Tortured Poets Department' Is A Post-Mortem Autopsy In Song: 5 Takeaways From Her New Album

"There is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once wounds have healed," Taylor Swift wrote of her new album. From grapplings with fame to ultra-personal reflections on love lost, her latest set of fountain and quill pen songs marks the end of an era.

"All’s fair in love and poetry," Taylor Swift declared when she announced her 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department , at the 66th GRAMMY Awards .

Taken from the proverb "All’s fair in love and war," the pop phenom gave us a fair warning: there’s no limit to what she’ll go through to achieve her ends.

On the freshly released The Tortured Poets Department , Taylor Swift has a few things to get off her chest — so much that it required a surprise second record, The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology , adding an additional 15 songs . The sprawling album is a masterclass in songwriting and so personal that it's analogous to performing a post mortem autopsy; The musical shapeshifter is here to exhume the tortured poets of her past and make peace with them.

In an Instagram post , Swift called the record an anthology that reflects " events, opinions and sentiments from a fleeting and fatalistic moment in time - one that was both sensational and sorrowful in equal measure." With the release of Tortured Poets , "t here is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once wounds have healed…our tears become holy in the form of ink on a page."

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Taylor Swift (@taylorswift)

Describing Swift’s work as a collection of tracks about boys and break-ups has always felt underbaked and disingenuous, but much of The Tortured Poets Department is just that. In true Swiftian fashion, she plays on preconceived theories, opting to toy with the five stages of grief — denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance — after a break-up, bringing listeners along on a peregrination exploring the depths of her relationships and personal growth.

Analyzing her feelings to craft songs is muscle memory at this point, but with every release Taylor Swift somehow does so with a refreshed and reimagined perspective. The stories she shares with her fans in TTPD might’ve made her feel like she died, but she’s a revenant no longer tortured by the whims and words of other poets.

With The Tortured Poets Department open for business, read on for five key points to consider when listening to Taylor Swift’s new album .

It's Much More Than A Break-Up Record

Although the record orbits around a break-up, The Tortured Poets Department demonstrates Swift's ability to shapeshift as a songwriter. A song about a break-up is layered, typically forcing Swift to unveil her own flaws while wearing her broken heart on her sleeve.

The fifth track on a Taylor Swift album is typically the most emotionally cutting, and "So Long London" is no exception. On the standout track, Swift views the loss of her lover and the breakdown of her relationship to Joe Alwyn through the lens of the city they once shared together. It’s a cathartic release for Swift who point-blank notes the pain they inflicted upon her and how, in turn, they ended up just as heartbroken as she is.

The high-spirited "Down Bad" and subdued "The Smallest Man in The World" are two sides of the same coin. The former is hopeful that a love could be reignited, whereas the latter sees Swift at her grittiest, pointing the finger at her former lover. "Smallest" poses a series of questions, accusing her ex of being a spy who only wanted to get intel on her.

On piano ode "loml," Swift looks back at the "get-love-quick" schemes she first wrote about in "Why She Disappeared," a poem for reputation . The poem originally considered the death of her reputation and how its aftermath made her stronger while she was simultaneously nursing a new relationship.

The track has a similar energy to fan favorite "All Too Well," but is even more accusatory — seemingly unlocking another level of her songwriting prowess as she teeters between seething rage and mourning with lines about picking through a "braid of lies" spewed by a partner who "claimed he was a lion" but is really a coward. While Swift is honest about never feeling a loss so deeply, she maturely accepts that the effort she put into keeping the relationship afloat was all she could do. It’s distinctly different from the battles she bravely fought in "The Great War," "Daylight" and "long story short."

She's Grappling With Fame & Owning Her Choices

That Taylor Swift struggles with her own celebrity and the public's perception is nothing new. On reputation ’s album prologue, she stated, "We think we know someone, but the truth is that we only know the version of them they have chosen to show us."

On The Tortured Poets Department, Swift has never been more honest about her feelings towards those who claim to know better than she does. On "But Daddy I Love Him," she doubles down on these frustrations, taking aim at self-righteous "vipers" and "judgmental creeps" who condemn her choice of a lover. Swift holds nothing back, declaring "I'll tell you something about my good name/It's mine alone to disgrace."

Swift stated that her life sometimes feels like a public autopsy with people psychoanalyzing her every thought and feeling. Following the release of Midnights and her larger-than-life Eras Tour , Swift’s been in her "glittering prime" despite experiencing her long-term relationship ending and the media hysteria around it would make anyone feel the opposite. "I Can Do It With A Broken Heart" confirms fans' theories that the GRAMMY winner was indeed putting on a brave face.

On "Clara Bow" — a song named for the silent film actress whose public life was so scrutinized that she admitted herself into a sanatorium — Swift sings "Beauty is a beast that roars/Down on all fours/Demanding, 'More.'" Again, Swift plays with the double-edged sword of fame, comparing herself to a performing circus animal — something she sings about in "Who’s Afraid Of Little Old Me?"

Taylor Swift Gets By With A Little Help From Her Friends

Swift has always looked up to and honored the greats in her music and art, and Tortured Poets is no exception. She recruits rock icon and songwriter Stevie Nicks to help build TTPD ’s world, and Nicks penned a poem featured in Swift’s physical album. Written in Texas, the poem is "For T and me..." and tells the tale of two ill-fated lovers. (Swift also namedrops Nicks in "Clara Bow," touching on the comparisons made between Clara, Nicks and herself.)

There are two additional guest appearances on TTPD : Post Malone appears on "Fortnight" and Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine is featured on "Florida!!!" (a surprisingly toned-down lead single). Swift particularly shines when paired with Welch, and the soaring "Florida!!!" sees their intertwined vocals creating a sound as infectious as the "drug" they sing about.

J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan inspired Swift on "cardigan" ("Tried to change the ending/Peter losing Wendy") but now the Lost Boy gets his own track on The Anthology ’s "Peter." The ever-inquisitive Swift pleads, "You said you were gonna grow up/Then you were gonna come find me" and confronts this man who wouldn’t grow up. She even puts herself in the shoes of Wendy who waited for Peter Pan to return but has grown tired of waiting.

TTPS Is All Quill And Fountain Pen Songs

A few years ago, Taylor Swift categorized her songwriting according to three writing devices: glitter gel pens for fun tracks, fountain pens for songs using modern imagery and lyrics, and quill pens for tracks with flowery, figurative language. Although devoid of the glittery gel pen songs that comprise many of Swift's hits, TTPD and its accompanying anthology are steeped in fountain and quill writing.

Most of The Tortured Poets Department are fountain pen tracks — thanks to 2024 Producer Of The Year Jack Antonoff ’s sleek pop production and synth use. Tracks like "Fresh Out The Slammer" and "My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys" are sharp, snappy, tongue-in-cheek tales of love affairs about to begin and coming to an end with the same sonic exuberance of past Swift & Antonoff songs, like "Out of the Woods" and "Getaway Car."

Tracks on The Anthology , mostly produced by Aaron Dessner , are stripped-back, folk-tinged quill songs brimming with sorrow and harrowing thematics and dives even deeper into her chaotic psyche. "The Prophecy" sees Swift beg to change a prophecy that has been laid out ahead of her — likely stemming from the pressure of being a global superstar when all she wants is to be loved.

This Is The End Of An Era (Or A Chapter)

To her occasional disdain, Swift's highly personal songwriting has created a global obsession with her inner life.  Although she's tired of the "public autopsy," Tortured Poets offers her time to reflect on the "events, opinions, and sentiments" over a time that was equal parts transient and transformative.

From her growth from the country-twanged teen singer on her self-titled debut to woman who is fearless in her pursuit of happiness, love, and peace, Swift has transformed time and time again. By viewing her work in eras — or, in this case, a chapter in a book of her life — it’s clear that Swift sees this current chapter of her life coming to a close, turning the last page and no longer longing to look back.

One could argue that Swift is an unreliable narrator, only ever presenting her side of the story. But she says that while considering the pain described on TTPS , many now-healed wounds turned out to be self-inflicted. With these stories immortalized, Taylor Swift has spoken her saddest story and is now "free of it." The tortured poets and poems will no longer take up space in this next chapter of her life.

Taylor Swift’s New Album 'The Tortured Poets Department' Is Here: The Tracklisting, Guests, Easter Eggs & More

Just over two months after Taylor Swift announced 'The Tortured Poets Department' at the 2024 GRAMMYs, the sprawling, bracingly personal album is here. Before you open the department door, arm yourself with the following knowledge.

We’ll be wandering through this Department for the foreseeable future.

Not only has Taylor Swift unleashed an absolute maelstrom with her 16-song new album, The Tortured Poets Department ; she’s dropped a whopping 15 additional tracks via its expanded version, The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology .

Clearly, there’s an absolute treasure trove here — for Swifties and the merely Swift-curious alike. A mostly downbeat and discursive affair, The Tortured Poets Department feels like the shadow cast by the gilded, giddy, exhilarating Eras Tour , which isn’t over yet. (Which makes all the sense in the world, as she was simultaneously chipping away at the album while crisscrossing the globe.)

If you’re reading this, you’re probably bracing yourself for this long, solemn, darkly funny journey. Don’t go alone: here’s a brief breakdown of what you should know going in. (And keep checking GRAMMY.com, as there’s plenty more Taylor and Tortured Poets coming your way.)

The Tracklisting

As previously reported , here’s the standard tracklist for The Tortured Poets Department:

Side A "Fortnight" (feat. Post Malone ) "The Tortured Poets Department" "My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys" "Down Bad"

** Side B ** "So Long, London" "But Daddy I Love Him" "Fresh Out the Slammer" "Florida!!!" (feat. Florence + the Machine )

** Side C ** "Guilty As Sin?" "Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?" "I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)" "Loml"

** Side D ** "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart" "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived" "The Alchemy" "Clara Bow"

The Expanded Tracklisting

Aside from The Black Dog Edition , The Albatross Edition , The Bolter Edition , and The Manuscript Edition — which consist of the standard edition of the album with its titular bonus track — here are the additional tracks that complete The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology .

"The Black Dog"

"Imgonnagetyouback"

"The Albatross"

"Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus"

"How Did It End?"

"So High School"

"I Hate It Here" "thanK you aIMee"

"I Look In People’s Windows"

"The Prophecy" "Cassandra" "Peter" "The Bolter" "Robin"

"The Manuscript"

Physical copies of The Tortured Poets Department feature an original poem by the one and only Stevie Nicks .

Titled "For T and me…," the poem starts off with "He was in love with her / Or at least she thought so / She was brokenhearted / Maybe he was too." It goes on to trace a doomed relationship — one party being "way too hot to handle" and the other "way too high to try."

Elsewhere, Post Malone lends a haunting vocal to opener and lead single "Fortnight," and Florence + the Machine elevate "Florida!!!".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FiqoZyauhdA

The lion’s share of the album was produced by Jack Antonoff ; Aaron Dessner handled a handful of tunes on the standard edition and the majority of The Anthology .

The Easter Eggs

Where do we begin? For starters, most of the songs seem to be directed at ex Matty Healy of the 1975, but Joe Alwyn and Travis Kelce seem to pop up here and there as well.

In the title track, Swift describes embracing the "cyclone" of a relationship with a partner akin to a "tattooed golden retriever." And they’d be remiss to compare themselves to Patti Smith or Dylan Thomas or any other famously tortured poet of the 20th century: "We’re modern idiots… we’re two idiots."

Elsewhere, Lucy Dacus of boygenius — and Antonoff himself — pop up ("But you tell Lucy you’d kill yourself if I ever leave / And I had said that to Jack about you / So I felt seen").

Far be it from us to speculate on exact subjects, but there are shades of depression ("You sacrificed us to the gods of your bluest days"), a betrothal that wasn’t to be ("You swore that you loved me but where were the clues? / I died on the altar waiting for the proof") and the racket of fame ("The circus life made me mean").

As usual, Swift has dumped puzzle pieces on the carpet — daring her ardent, global fanbase to start at the edges and work their way to the center. But never to this degree, across such an ocean of material.

Tortured poets — and those who fall in love with them — assemble!

Inside Tyler Hubbard's New Album 'Strong': How He Perfectly Captured His "Really Sweet Season" Of Life

On the heels of Tyler Hubbard's latest album release, hear from the country star about the biggest influences for 'Strong' — from his "unique relationship" with his hometown to making Keith Urban jealous.

Country fans first got to know Tyler Hubbard as the voice of Florida Georgia Line . Upon his solo debut in 2022, they got a deeper look into his life as a devoted family man. Now, the chart-topping singer/songwriter wants to show his skills as the genre's feel-good party starter.

Hubbard's second album, Strong , turns up the energy with 13 tracks that focus on spreading the joy he's feeling in his own life. There's several parallels to his self-titled debut, including another tribute to his late father on "'73 Beetle" and reflections on his small-town Georgia upbringing with "Take Me Back" and "Back Then Right Now." Yet, every narrative feels more celebratory — buoyed by Hubbard's purposeful delivery, his hopeful lyricism, and uptempo melodies.

It's a natural evolution for Hubbard, who has projected positivity in his music and his image since his FGL days. And now that the world has welcomed him as a solo act — including two No. 1s at country radio with "5 Foot 9" and "Dancin' in the Country," and several sold-out shows in 2023 — he felt it was only right to bring good vibes with his second LP.

"I was carrying the momentum from last year — the first album, being out on tour, the energy from the fans," Hubbard shares. "If you come to my live show, it's a lot of happy, fun dancing energy, and that's what I've really enjoyed kind of leaning into right now."

Ahead of Strong 's release, Hubbard sat down with GRAMMY.com to chat about his album process. Below, he breaks down the most important components, from writing nearly every song on his tour bus to happily riding in the "good time lane."

Building On The First Album

The first album was more of an introduction to who I am, and this album is more settling in. It's inspired by the live show more than anything, and the fans themselves, as opposed to me and my story.

I kind of want [these songs]to feel like distant relatives to the first album. I'll use that analogy a lot of times in sessions and just say, "Let's elevate, and let's move forward and progress, but let's keep it in the same family."

When I was writing both these projects, it was a tough time. You know, going through the pandemic and all that brought along, transitioning into different careers and not knowing what was gonna happen with FGL for a while. Obviously, my marriage really inspired the song "Strong," but there's sort of that principle [from album one to album two] of going through a hard season that you come out on the other side of it stronger.

Writing On The Road

Last year, I was getting in front of my audience for the first time [post-pandemic] and really getting to see what they wanted, what was resonating, what was working, maybe what was missing in the set. So I was able to pull that energy from the fans right back to the bus. The majority of this album I wrote on the road last year, which is where I love to write songs. I love to write in town too, but [there's] something about being out on the road — you just feel a little extra creative and a little less distracted.

Back in the day, when we were starting off and really roughing it, we didn't have anything else to do but our careers, so we'd come home from the road and we'd write three or four days a week, and then we would go hit the road and play shows. But now that I'm a husband and a father, I try to compartmentalize it, so when I'm home during the week, I can take some time off to be with the kiddos and my wife.

And fortunately, now, I have my own bus, so I can bring writers out, and we can just hunker down on my bus all weekend and write songs. It's pretty fun because you kind of feel like you're binge writing a bit. But once you get in that creative space and your wheels are turnin', it's nice to stay there for more than four or five hours like we do in Nashville, turning it off at 4 o'clock and going home. It keeps it fun.

Creating Music For The Stage

We were mainly thinking about the live show [when we were writing]. It just felt like [we were writing] songs I couldn't wait to play live.

There's some heart, there's some depth, there's emotion and vulnerability in a lot of these songs that I like to play live, but overall, I want it to just feel fun. There's enough stuff in our world to make us sad, so I'm just like, if I can put music out that makes people feel good, that's what I want to do.

Especially in the context of our genre and our culture — it feels like there's a lot of sad boy country going on right now. You know, nothing wrong with that, I like to get real and emo a bit. But I think if everybody's doing one thing, I try to lean to the other. And right now I love where we're headed, in the good time lane.

I was soaking up everything Keith [Urban] was doing [while touring with him last year]. I watched his set most nights. He's kind of the king of fun tempo live energy. [We were] either [trying to] make Keith jealous or make Keith want to record one of the songs we write. So some of these songs are probably inspired by trying to get a Keith Urban cut.

"Park," "Wish You Would" and "Vegas" are [three] of those songs. They go really well live and have been really, really fun. The crowd starts moving in a weird way when ["Wish You Would"] comes on. It looks like they're just, like, lettin' loose and not really coordinated at anything. [ Laughs .]

"Back Then Right Now" is the single, so people are knowing that one [more] and it's cool to see them singing it and engaged. "BNA" is gonna be a lot of fun to play live. I could probably play this whole album top to bottom and be pretty happy with that being the set.

Honoring Where He Came From

I wanted this album to still be dynamic — as uptempo as it is, I still wanted the fans to be let in a little bit more into who I am and deeper into my life. Hopefully with each project I put out, I have some songs that let people in a bit more and tap into a vulnerable place, and challenge me as a person and a writer to just continue to go there.

I have a unique relationship with my hometown. I love where I came from, and I'm proud of where I'm from, but it's not somewhere that I'm still living — I've been in Nashville longer than I was in Georgia, I've been here for over 18 years. A lot's changed since then. The house I grew up in is not there, my dad's gone, my mom's moved to Alabama.

It's an interesting dynamic, because in our genre, it's cool to be really proud of where you're from, and really pay homage to where you're from. And I still do — a lot of these songs are literally born because of where I came from. But at the same time, I don't have that same relationship with where I'm from. I just thought it was a little bit of a different approach on the relationship with the hometown with ["Take Me Back"]. I hope people can relate to it.

Recruiting Trusty Collaborators, Like Producer Jordan Schmidt

The collaborators and songwriters on this project, there's a couple of new ones, but there's a lot of guys that I have a big history with. A lot of that's just due to the fact that if I'm bringing writers out on the road, it's guys that I know and trust, and that I've had success with. I'm not speed dating on the road — it's just very intentional, efficient time.

They've proven themselves, and so there's no reason to not go back to 'em. I just can't reiterate enough how thankful I am to be in this city, in this songwriting community. I have so many people that make me a better songwriter and push me as an artist and come with great ideas. It makes it that much more fun to write songs and do what I love.

Also, to know me, and who I am, and where I'm headed, and what I want to do and say, that helps tremendously because we're not just shooting in the dark. I think "Wish You Would" is a song that's a little unique and feels really fun. If I was going to pick a direction, that's a cool, fresh sound that I'm really enjoying right now.

Leaning Into Feeling Good

I'm in a really sweet season. Not just with the work stuff, but my family is in such a good spot. My kids are 3, 4 and 6, so they're in a really fun, just joyful season. I can have a bad session or a tough day, and I can go home and get overwhelmed with joy and love in the house. It's just awesome energy. I'm really grateful for that, and I'm really kind of leaning into it.

I hope [fans] understand how grateful I am to be here to be still doing this 13 years later, and to be able to have another opportunity to experience a lot of firsts again, and get to continue to connect with them. I just love what I do, and I gotta give the fans a lot of credit for allowing me to do it.
