• You can check up to two pieces of luggage with you at a cost of $20.00 USD / $25.00 CAD per checked bag per leg of travel. Unfortunately, payment is by credit card only.

Victoria Clipper Customs Procedures

Unfortunately, since this is an international sailing, you’ll be required to pass through customs and immigration on both sides of the border. But don’t worry; the process is significantly easier than most airport and land crossings.

But remember, there is one important difference between the procedures on the outbound and inbound journeys.

• When leaving Seattle, you won’t have to go through customs until you reach Belleville Terminal in Victoria.
• However, when returning home, you will be required to go through U.S. Immigration/Passport Control before boarding your departure from Victoria. So it is imperative that you arrive with plenty of time to spare before your sailing home.

Taking the Victoria Clipper from Seattle: everything you need to know (and a Victoria itinerary)

Having visited Vancouver Island and more specifically Victoria many times we definitely have some good advice for planning a trip to Victoria BC . With four different options for getting there, the Victoria Clipper is our top pick. Here’s everything you need to know about taking the Victoria Clipper, including customs information, Victoria Clipper tickets, and an itinerary for a great weekend up on the island.

Taking the Victoria Clipper from Seattle

As we said, taking the Victoria Clipper is the easiest way to get to Vancouver Island from Seattle. The ride on the Clipper is about 2 hours and 45 minutes, give or take a few due to weather or stopping for whales. The seas on Puget Sound and the Salish Sea are typically pretty calm and from downtown Seattle to Victoria’s Inner Harbour, there are plenty of sights to see.

While it’s true that some people are more susceptible to motion sickness than others, in general the boat’s movement once you’re underway isn’t bad at all. The Victoria Clipper is a catamaran and really is very steady and stable in the open water. Having said that, the Clipper crew does provide meclizine, an anti-nausea medication / motion sickness oral tablet, that is quite helpful. Due to our sailing time, we were in the dock when a Washington State Ferry came in so the wake had us rocking a bit before we departed.

Also important to note: THERE IS NO WIFI ON THE VICTORIA CLIPPER once you’ve set sail. If you were planning on using WiFi aboard the Victoria Clipper, you’ll be out of luck. If you travel with your own hot spot, you should have a strong enough signal for a majority of the sailing to be able to using your private device for WiFi, but the ship’s WiFi turns off once it leaves port.

Sailing on the Victoria Clipper with kids

There’s no reason to not bring the kids on the Victoria Clipper. There are a variety of spaces on the boat so if kids get antsy, they can move around very freely. We recommend bringing a selection of easy-to-transport games or a tablet to keep the kids’ attention on the ride. While it is a much easier and more fun trip than flying somewhere, being on a boat with kids can be a bit obnoxious after the first half hour. Just be prepared as a courtesy to other passengers and to make your own sailing better.

Tip: we bring a small pair of binoculars for wildlife watching and tablets with headphones to occupy the kids when we take the Victoria Clipper from Seattle to Vancouver Island.

Dining on board the Victoria Clipper

On board, there is wait service or a walk-up cafe/bar counter. You’ll find locally sourced snack platters, pastries, cookies and more. There is also a wide selection of adult beverages to make the ride a bit more enjoyable. 

Note : we are Bloody Mary aficionados and tried the Clipper Bloody Mary on the way to and from Victoria and it was top notch both times, and from different bartenders. I think they know their stuff.

Also something to note, there are Duty Free services onboard the Victoria Clipper. If you are one of those travelers that loves to get their duty free goods (tax free treats like Toblerone or vodka) you can do that onboard the Clipper.

Parking for the Clipper

While our top recommendation is to not have to worry about a car at all, Clipper Vacations has arranged a discounted overnight parking rate with the Bell Street Pier Garage ( Google Maps link ). Located at Elliott and Wall, it’s about a block away from Pier 69, the Victoria Clipper terminal. The daily rate with Victoria Clipper validation is $10 USD (as of September 2021). *YOU MUST GET YOUR PARKING TICKET VALIDATED!

There is no easy street parking for overnight Victoria Clipper travel, so the Bell Street Pier Garage really is the best option.

Customs requirements from the USA or Canada via Victoria Clipper

Even though the southern end of Vancouver Island protrudes beyond the mainland international boundary between the USA and Canada, you still need a valid government ID to cross the border.

A Passport, Passport Card, Enhanced Driver License, Enhanced ID Card (EDL/ID) or NEXUS Card is REQUIRED to cross the U.S./Canadian border by land and sea. This applies to all travelers, including children riding the Victoria Clipper.

If you’ve lived in Washington or Oregon most of your life but haven’t visited Canada recently, you may think that things are like they were when we were kids: show up, state your business and cross the border. No, now it’s fully treated as any other international border and you do need a Federal ID to cross over.

COVID Requirements for Travel to Canada

Yes, there are requirements to cross the border to Canada during and following the COVID-19 pandemic. You cannot just show up with a Victoria Clipper ticket and go. In addition to your passport or travel documents, due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, the following are REQUIRED to enter Canada:

• ArriveCAN  approved receipt of accepted submission within 72 hours of arrival into Canada.
• Proof of negative PCR COVID-19 test (not rapid antigen test) within 72 hours of arrival into Canada.
• Hard copy proof of full vaccination.

For the most up-to-date travel requirements to enter Canada via any transportation method, visit the Canadian government travel site for all details and restrictions. There is a new system for submitting travel plans before entering Canada, so be sure to complete that process PRIOR to your departure day.

Tickets for the Victoria Clipper

Like with anything else, we always want to encourage travelers to book their tickets IN ADVANCE. Sure, you can wing it and book 2 days out or even same day if you’re super lucky, but sailings do fill up quite quickly. If you plan on taking the Victoria Clipper from Seattle on a weekend, you need to book that ASAP!

There are a variety of ticket prices, and booking further out gets you a better deal than a last minute ticket, so to keep it within a certain budget book at least 7 days before you want to sail. Also know that there are three different options for Victoria Clipper tickets:  Economy, Vista, and Comfort classes. Vista is the ideal class, IMHO, but choose the one that is right for you!

Which Victoria Clipper fare is right for me?

Economy Class is exactly as it sounds: it’s a standard passage between Seattle and Victoria. There are no frills and you’ll be seated on the lower level of the Victoria Clipper. The view is just above water level and if you want to get outside, you’ll need to go upstairs.

Vista Class, which is our favorite, is located on the top level of the boat. This is $10 USD per ticket more and includes nicer seats with more legroom and a deeper recline, bigger windows for potential whale watching, wait service to your seat, and a brighter cabin due to the skylights. Also, Vista Class has several dining tables in the center of the top deck, so that may be valuable to some guests.

Tip : in Vista Class, the seats nearest the back of the boat have the largest windows, which make for the most beautiful views on your journey.

Comfort class is the last fare option, and it’s $25 USD more per ticket than Economy. With comfort class, you have a cabin separated from the other classes, more elevated finishes within the seats/cabin, wait service to your seat, as well as coffee, tea and light snacks provided. Also, you are granted priority boarding, so if that’s important to you, this is your option.

10 fun things to do in Victoria BC

There are, of course, more than 10 fun things to do in Victoria, but these are our top picks. Grab a few of these ideas and have a great Clipper Vacation! And bonus:  if you’re thinking of doing Christmas in Victoria , the Clipper does bundles to include the Butchart Gardens’ lights displays!

Strolling downtown Victoria BC

We always love to explore downtown Victoria on foot because it’s fun, free and festive. Visiting Victoria at Christmas is always a favorite, as the city decks itself out in lights and boughs. Enjoy the architecture and marina, and of course, eat all the food!!! Tip for High Tea : while it’s not the high tea of the Empress Hotel , Murchie’s on Government St does a really great tea service at a fraction of the price. And you can get your Orange Pekoe tea to take home too!

Visiting the Royal BC Museum

We can’t skip the Royal BC Museum. Ever. We visit many museums in our travels and the Royal BC Museum has consistently been the kids’ favorite, and us dads too. The focus on First Nations culture and history, as well as remarkable rotating special exhibits makes the Royal BC Museum a MUST VISIT on any trip to Victoria. Tour Parliament

When you’re taking the Victoria Clipper from Seattle, one of the first sights you see upon arrival is the Parliament building . Built in the early 1900s, it’s a beautiful piece of architecture, and it’s very grand, seen from everywhere. You can tour the building (about 40 minutes or so) and they keep it open late enough that it’s easy to work into a busy weekend.

Tip :  if you want to tour Parliament, be sure to get your tour token in advance. While it is a free tour, it also is space limited, so don’t miss your chance!

Visit Beacon Hill Park

Beacon Hill Park is a really special place. From being home to the tallest free-standing totem pole in the world to peacocks running free, Beacon Hill Park is a gem among city parks. There are walking trails, playgrounds, a petting zoo, a turn of the century imperial style garden, and more. It’s a great spot to spend the afternoon and watch the sun set on the Strait of Juan de Fuca.   Our friend Allison at Tips for Family Trips loves this park too!

Have lunch at Fisherman’s Wharf

The houseboats and water taxis make a lunch at Fisherman’s Wharf a picture perfect experience, even in the rain. Fish and Chips, Mexican, local Canadian salmon: you can find it all in the Wharf. There is very limited indoor seating at any of the restaurants, but if you’re there for lunch, you can have a super fun, informal stand-up meal in one of the outdoor dining areas.   Google Maps link here .

Go whale watching: Orca Spirit Adventures

Whale watching is one of the most special activities anywhere on the Salish Sea and Puget Sound. Grey and humpback whales frequently visit the waters around Victoria, but the resident and transient orca whales are what most guests are here to see. Focusing on eco-tourism, animal awareness and preservation, we cannot recommend Orca Spirit Adventures enough for a Victoria whale watching experience, especially with kids.   Book THIS EXACT TOUR here !

Tip : if you’re whale watching with kids, bring something to occupy them during travel time between port and where the whales are. Sometimes there is more than a half hour getting out to sea before there is wildlife, so be prepared.

Visit Victoria’s Chinatown

If you’re taking the Victoria Clipper from Seattle, you may have already checked out the International District just south of downtown Seattle . You still need to visit the small Chinatown of Victoria. It’s actually the oldest in Canada and is home to the narrowest street in Canada: Fan-tan Alley. There are lots of wonderful local shops and good food, so visit when you’re hungry and you’ll leave happy.

Rent bikes and ride the Island

Many hotels now supply their guests with bikes and helmets. Victoria is a very bikeable city, from the downtown area all the way out to Brentwood Bay and the Butchart Gardens. We’ve biked the Galloping Goose trail a few times and really enjoy the combination of urban biking, farm country, seaside communities and breathtaking views. Victoria is meant to be biked.

Tip : if your hotel doesn’t provide bikes, you’ll find several rental shops, including one directly in the Inner Harbour just off the marina.

A good thing to know about taking the Victoria Clipper from Seattle is that you can actually bring your bike onto the boat. You do need to register it and it is an additional luggage fee, but you can totally do it!

Photographer on the loose

This is my favorite activity anywhere: photographer on the loose. I love to shoot photos in older cities, but also in colorful places that are very different from home. Victoria is an ideal blend of vibrant Victorian facades and gritty red brick buildings. Even outside of the touristy areas, Victoria is a fascinating town to photograph. The street art scene is growing and the late afternoon light paints its own colors to photograph.

Visit the Butchart Gardens

We save the Butchart Gardens for last because it’s the crown jewel of Victoria. Located about twenty minute north of the main city core, the Butchart Gardens is a sprawling estate separated into several themed garden areas: the sunken garden, the rose garden, Japanese garden, Italianate and more. We’ve been in spring, summer and fall and it’s always gorgeous. Hi, I want to sit in economy near the door to disembark. I would also like to sit by the window on the right side. (I believe debarkation happens on the right side of the ship coming into Seattle. Please correct me if that's wrong) I saw a picture that made it look like the very last row, on the left and right side, do not have a window. Do you know which rows the windows start? I can't find good pictures of those seats that extend back beyond the place where you buy food. Thank you for your article and info!

20 Tips for the Victoria Clipper Seattle to Victoria Ferry

When you’re in Seattle, it’s just a short trip away from visiting Canada. To cross the border, you have a few options such as driving, flying, or taking a bus. Our favorite way to visit Canada from Seattle is the Seattle to Victoria ferry with FRS Clipper.

Victoria, British Columbia, is the capital city of the province and many visitors love its British architecture and feel. Plus, it’s a very walkable city to explore and is near the famous Butchart Gardens.

If you’re planning a quick trip across the border to visit Canada, here’s what you should know about sailing aboard the Victoria Clipper V fast ferry from Seattle to Victoria.

Planning Your Seattle to Victoria Ferry Trip

Choosing the Seattle to Victoria ferry is perfect for a quick day trip from Seattle or a weekend getaway. We’ve been to Victoria a few times and there’s plenty to see for multiple trips. Victoria is easy to walk around, so it’s great for a day trip, but I recommend staying a weekend or longer.

The Victoria Clipper ferry terminal is along the Seattle waterfront at Pier 69. We parked in the Bell Street Pier Garage and walked to the terminal from there. They charge Clipper guests $10 per day for overnight parking, which is a great deal in Seattle! Be sure to bring your parking ticket with you and get a validation ticket while aboard the Clipper.

Sailing times vary for the Clipper depending on the season and day of the week. They typically do one sailing in the winter and two in the summer. The schedule normally has a Seattle departure early in the morning, arriving in Victoria before lunch, then departing Victoria in the early evening, and arriving back in Seattle in the late evening. Ferry fares aboard the Clipper range based on the travel season. Be sure to check for their latest travel specials ! You can expect to spend about $150 on a round trip economy ticket , with the lowest being $115 (advance purchase Nov & Dec) and the highest at $199 (standard fare May to Sept). Child fares are about $78-$100.

Economy class is your cheapest ticket option. You can also upgrade to Economy Panorama (window seats) for about $30 (round-trip; $15 each way), upgrade to Vista Class for $30 or $60 (panorama) more, or the ultimate upgrade to Comfort Class for $60 or $90 (Comfort VIP) more. Those prices are based on round-trip pricing.

TIP: If you’re planning to stay overnight in Victoria, price out a hotel package with the FRS Clipper. Booking your hotel with them will give you a discount on your ferry price , so compare prices to book with the Clipper and book separately to see which would be best for your travel dates.

Boarding the Clipper Ferry in Seattle

You’ll want to arrive at the terminal about an hour before departure. It’s located at Pier 69 on the downtown Seattle waterfront. Guests on the Clipper can park at the Bell Street Pier Garage (across from the Edgewater Hotel) for only $10 a day! Which is an amazing deal for parking in Seattle.

You’ll need to get a validation ticket while onboard the Clipper ferry to have the $10 price. Don’t lose your entrance parking ticket either, you’ll need both tickets to exit the garage with the $10 per day price.

Once you make your way to the terminal – which is on the north end of the Edgewater Hotel, you’ll line up for check-in. Your passports will be checked, and your boarding documents printed. It’s recommended that you check in online in advance. An email is sent 7 days before your sailing with a link to check-in.

Comfort Class passengers do have a special line for check-in and priority boarding in Seattle – not in Victoria. After checking in, you move to the boarding area to await your turn to board (based on your seat class). Boarding begins about 45 minutes before departure. All guests must be on board within 15 minutes of departure. There are restrooms available at the ferry terminal near the boarding area.

You can bring carry-on bags with you onboard the Clipper ferry. You can also check bags, Comfort Class passengers get a checked bag for free, and other passengers will have to pay to check bags. Carry-on bags will have to be stowed on the provided racks on the main level by the economy seats.

The Victoria Clipper V holds 525 passengers, and if the sailing is not full, they will make announcements offering upgrades to Vista or Comfort Class seating while boarding. I asked on my recent sailing about prices to upgrade on board and they are the same as the price in advance, $15 for each level higher you upgrade.

Do note that bad weather could prevent or delay your sailing. We’ve traveled in the summer and winter with no issues, so realize this is a rare occurrence. I spoke with the captain on my most recent sailing and he said that the Clipper V can handle rough seas quite well and he believed they only had one cancellation the past year and only a couple of delays.

TIP: I noticed our Friday AM ferry ride was fairly open in Comfort Class but still pretty busy in Economy. But on Sunday evening for the return to Seattle ferry, the whole boat was very full with most window seats taken and many people were upgrading on the boat. The Comfort Class VIP seats were completely sold out on that Sunday evening return ferry. I’m betting Saturdays are busy going to Victoria and Sundays are busy on the return.

Seating and Class Options Aboard the Clipper

The Victoria Clipper V has six seating class options, Economy Standard, Economy Panoramic, Vista Standard, Vista Panoramic, Comfort, and Comfort VIP. Seats are now assigned – they weren’t previously. The assigned seating is nice so there is no stress about having to be the first aboard to get a good seat. This also means you’ll likely want to book early to have the best selection.

Each fare class costs about $30 more than the lower level and the panorama (window) seats are about $30 more than the inner seats. So, the cheapest seat will be Economy and the highest will be Comfort VIP which will be $100 more than Economy.

NOTE: only the lower deck offers wheelchair seating, and you must be able to use stairs for Vista or Comfort Class seating as they’re on the upper deck and only accessible via stairs.

Economy Class

Economy Class seating is on the lower level and the most affordable ticket option. Seats are fabric and face forward in the front section while the back section features sections with forward and backward-facing seats around a table.

Economy Panoramic seats are at the front windows and along the side.

Vista Class

Vista Class is located on the back half of the upper deck. There are leather seats and many are situated around a table. It’s perfect for families or groups. Seats face forward and backward, so beware if you have motion sickness. It has the closest access to the outside viewing deck, which is a small open deck on the backside of the ferry. The viewing deck is open to all passengers, not just Vista Class.

Vista Panorama seats are grouped in twos along the side of the cabin and all face forward with large windows on one side. These seats do face forward, however, the front of the boat is not visible as Vista Class is at the back of the upper deck and separated from the Comfort Class cabin by the galley, stairs, etc. There is a skylight to help add light to the space – it feels more open than the economy seating.

There is a separate galley for food and drinks for Vista Class passengers, so they don’t need to go downstairs. However, there are no private restrooms for Vista Class, and you’ll need to go down to the main level downstairs for the restrooms.

Comfort Class

Comfort Class is the highest level of ticket you can book and comes with a few perks in addition to the premium seats. It is in a private cabin at the front of the upper deck. All seats are leather, and all have tables at the seats. All seats face forward, except there is a set of four chairs around a table at the front of the side windows. The cabin is bright and open with large windows. I also loved that the seats had a generous recline and legroom.

If you’re able to snag one of the front-row center Comfort VIP seats, you’ll have expansive window views of the journey over the front of the boat. During daylight sailing times, these seats give you the best view of the islands and possible wildlife. The Comfort VIP seats along the side do have large windows for viewing as well.

Comfort Class also has complimentary amenities like an automatic espresso machine, cans of pop, bottles of water, and juice, as well as a few snacks (pretzels, chips, almonds) available to guests free of charge.

Comfort Class has two private bathrooms for the cabin while the other cabins share a set of six or so on the main deck. There are no charging outlets at the seats, however, Comfort Class passengers can utilize a charging dock station near the snack bar for their devices.

One thing to note, unless you have special needs for preboarding or debarking, comfort class passengers are some of the last passengers to be released upon docking, which means you’re often towards the back of the line to clear customs. I did hear that the Clipper is considering options to allow Comfort Class passengers priority disembarkation, but as of right now, that’s not in place.

Riding Aboard the Victoria Clipper

The sailing time between Seattle and Victoria is just under a three-hour cruise. You’ll be leaving Seattle, sailing north through the Puget Sound, passing Whidbey Island and Port Townsend on the tip of the Olympic Peninsula before crossing the Strait of Juan de Fuca across to Victoria on the south tip of Vancouver Island.

During the trip, you’re free to get up and move around the ship – making it great for little busybodies or passengers who like to stretch their legs. There are restrooms located on each deck of the Clipper, although the two on the upper deck are for Comfort Class passengers only.

You can also go out to an outdoor viewing deck on the back of the top deck for some fresh air and great views. If you love nature viewing, remember to bring a pair of travel binoculars in case you’re lucky enough to pass by some whales or other PNW wildlife. Keep in mind the time of day and season if you’re hoping to see wildlife.

Food on the Clipper

There is food service aboard and the Clipper has some great snack options. They have breakfast and lunch items; most are prepackaged boxes and sandwiches. We enjoy the $11 fruit and cheese plate as well as the $3.50 Alki Bakery Cinnamon Roll. You can also get non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages on board. You will need to pay with a credit card, not cash. Prices range from $3-$11 for snacks and $2-$9 for drinks.

Motion Sickness

If you’re worried about motion sickness, the Clipper provides complimentary motion sickness medicine (meclizine) and ginger candies. Just know that the meds they provide are not non-drowsy, so if you plan to tour after arriving, bring your own less drowsy medicine, or try a Reliefband bracelet which uses electric current stimulation for drug-free nausea relief. I love using mine when cruising!

Crossing the Border

What documents you need to bring.

Victoria, British Columbia is located in Canada. This means that all guests (age 16+) need to have a passport, passport card, enhanced driver’s license, or a NEXUS card. 

If you’re traveling with US or Canadian children under the age of 16 you will need to provide one of these: an original or copy of his or her birth certificate, a consular report of birth abroad, a naturalization certificate, or a citizenship card. Children from countries other than the US or Canada will require a passport and possibly a visa. Failure to provide such evidence may prevent you from entering Canada.

If both birth parents are not present, you must provide a signed (preferably notarized) statement from the parent(s) authorizing the child to travel out of the country or proof of custody.

Clearing Customs

When you arrive in Victoria, you’ll line up to get off the boat and make your way to the Customs and Border Agents at the terminal. Once you have your passports checked and turn in your customs form (which you fill out on the boat) you’ll exit the terminal and be ready to explore the city.

Coming back to Seattle from Victoria, you’ll present your passports and clear US Border Protection at the Victoria terminal after checking in. You’ll have to also clear United States Customs before leaving the Seattle terminal and declare any goods you’re bringing back to the US. If you’re in Canada for less than 48 hours you can bring back $200 in allowances, and $800 if you stay longer than 48 hours.  

Where to Stay While in Victoria

Inn at laurel point.

During two of our overnight trips to Victoria, we stayed at the Inn at Laurel Point . I love this hotel’s location and every room has a view of the inner or outer harbor. The hotel is close to the Victoria Clipper terminal, making it easy to get to from the Clipper terminal.

The rooms are all spacious with large bathrooms and great amenities. My girls love the L’Occitane body products! I love how the hotel feels so bright and modern. The architecture and art of the hotel feels unique and welcoming.

The Inn at Laurel Point is at the end of the harbor and offers direct access to downtown (via sidewalk). It’s about a 10-15-minute walk to the city center. The hotel has a restaurant on-site, making it great for getting breakfast in bed! It’s also near Fisherman’s Wharf, another popular tourist spot in the city.

Coast Victoria Hotel & Marina

On our recent trip we stayed at the Coast Victoria Hotel which is located on the outer harbor and a little farther from downtown. But it’s still within easy walking distance of the Clipper dock and Coast Hotels is a chain, so if you like to collect hotel loyalty points, you might find that useful.

The Coast Victoria Hotel also has a complimentary shuttle service available to guests upon request, making it convenient for getting around town. Mia and I both enjoy walking, so we just walked downtown from the hotel, which is about a 15-minute walk, all with sidewalks and along a main thoroughfare. Plus, we loved passing the lit-up Parliament building each time!

The Coast Victoria Hotel also has a great indoor-outdoor pool, but unfortunately, we didn’t partake since it was December, and we didn’t pack for pool time. Another really interesting and fun amenity at the Coast Victoria Hotel…bidets! Each room has a Toto bidet seat and I have to say that it was a big hit for us!

For guests looking for a luxury getaway in Victoria, the Fairmont Empress holds court at the center of the inner harbor and is considered one of the best hotels in the city. Guests will be treated to an old-fashioned, luxury experience in the heart of downtown Victoria.

What to Do in Victoria, BC

Butchart gardens.

Most recently we got to experience the Christmas season in Victoria. We visited Butchart Gardens at night for their Magic of Christmas display. It was themed around the 12 days of Christmas song as you wandered along the pathways. If you’re visiting during the spring or summer, the gardens are filled with so many gorgeous flowers.

There are restaurants at Butchart Gardens, so you don’t need to worry about meals when planning your visit. We love getting hot chocolate and drinking it while we look at all the Christmas lights, and then we end our night with dinner at the Poppyseed Restaurant.

Butchart Gardens is about 30 minutes north of downtown Victoria so you might want to book a tour transfer . If you want to pay for a taxi, expect to pay about CAD 60 each way from downtown Victoria to Butchart Gardens. You can also book a Butchart Gardens package with your Clipper ferry ticket.

Whale Watching

During our summer trip went whale watching and spotted two orca whale pods, an elephant seal, and even puffins. Whale watching is one of the most popular nature activities for Victoria visitors in the summer.

There are a variety of whale-watching excursions , but many of them are on zodiac boats so they can quickly cover a large region to find marine life. On our excursion, we ended up far south into US waters to find whales.

They do provide warm outerwear to help you stay warm on the water because you are quite exposed versus other whale watching excursions I’ve been on (WA and CA) where you’re on a leisure boat with many passengers.

Afternoon Tea at Fairmont Empress

Ready to raise those pinkies? Afternoon tea is a great activity while in Victoria if you enjoy snacking on mini sandwiches and desserts while sipping on cups of warm tea. It’s a great rainy-day activity but can be busy so you should try to make reservations.

WildPlay Adventure Course

My tween and teen adventurers loved our time spent at WildPlay, an aerial adventure and zipline park. We spent about three hours at WildPlay, tackling every obstacle course and even doing the 40-foot What’s to Fear Jump!

If you have adventurous kids or teens on your trip and are visiting during the summer months, I highly recommend this as a fun outdoor activity!

Royal BC Museum

If you have any museum lovers in your traveling group, you should stop into the Royal BC Museum . We’ve visited a few times, and the rotating exhibits are always our favorite. They also have a great Natural History exhibit that reminds me a bit of the Natural History Museum in NYC. They are currently updating their First Peoples Gallery and I look forward to visiting again once that space has been reopened with the help of local Indigenous tribes.

If you like to book packages or don’t want to do the planning yourself, the Victoria Clipper has travel advisors who will help you arrange your travel activities. And, if you prefer to put everything off until the last minute you can book activities on the Clipper during your day of travel.

Other Transportation Options

As I’ve already mentioned, the Clipper Seattle to Victoria ferry is my favorite way to travel from Seattle to Victoria. But there are a few other options that I wanted to mention.

If you find yourself on the Olympic Peninsula, it might make sense to book transportation between Port Angeles and Victoria aboard the Black Ball MV Coho ferry. The Black Ball Ferry also offers car transportation if you’re driving your car, whereas the high-speed Victoria Clipper catamaran is a passenger-only ferry.

If you’d like a unique float plane experience, you might want to check out booking a ticket with Kenmore Air seaplane. They offer scenic flights between Seattle and Victoria along with vacation packages.

Washington State Ferries travel from Anacortes, WA (~1.5 hrs north of Seattle) to Sidney, BC (~30 minutes north of Victoria). This ferry also is a car and passenger ferry. Another option if you want to take your car with you to Victoria.

Victoria is located on Vancouver Island and is only reachable via ferry or plane. If you find yourself in Vancouver, BC, you can get to Victoria via BC Ferries or Harbour Air.

Also, making the trip by sea allows you to soak in the majestic Pacific Northwest in all its beauty .

This is great for tourists who don’t have a car in Seattle , or any local Seattleites who can get a ride downtown to catch the ferry.

There are tons of things to do in Victoria whether you’re looking for big city culture or epic gardens/scenery.

• Inner Harbour – Walk around, enjoy eateries and street performances.

Victoria Day Trip from Seattle: Planning an Itinerary

The majority of Victoria’s top things to do can be found within walking distance of the ferry terminal.

You’ll instantly recognize the iconic Fairmont Empress Hotel , as well as the Provincial Legislature .

But, what exactly is the best way to maximize your time in Victoria?

Well, if you’re truly looking at seeing as much as possible, I’d suggest a half-day Victoria Hop on Hop off tour .

This allows you to cover 15 of Victoria’s top sites in one afternoon for as little as $40 USD.

But if you’d prefer the self-guided route, I’ll leave a few suggestions below:

Stop #1: Grab a Coffee or a Quick Lunch (1 hour)

If you’re looking for a quick bite, Red Fish Blue Fish offers some of the best fish and chips in town, smack dab in the heart of the Inner Harbour.

This outdoor pier-side eatery is just a 5-minute walk from Belleville Terminal. So you’ll find fantastic views of the Inner Harbour and a lightly battered halibut that’ll put England to shame.

If you’re looking for a more formal sit-down meal, the 10 Acres Bistro is a short stroll away on Courtenay St. They offer sustainable farm-to-table dining using only the finest local ingredients – always a crowd pleaser.

Stop #2: Breathe the Sea Air of Victoria’s Inner Harbour (1-2 hours)

During the summer months, the Inner Harbour is clearly Victoria’s beating heart. Here you’ll find festivals, buskers and the best people watching in town.

Not to mention, the area is home to the city’s most iconic buildings: the Empress Hotel and the British Columbia Parliament Buildings are automatic stops – as well as the Royal BC Museum and Miniature World .

If you’ve got the time, high tea at the Empress (three sittings a day, must be booked in advance) is one of the most prototypically Victoria experiences of all.

Nearby Fisherman’s Wharf offers food kiosks, boutiques, and a jumping off point for Victoria whale watching tours .

Stop #3A: Feel the History in Oldtown/Chinatown (2 hours)

Just north of the Inner Harbour you’ll find the neighbourhood of Old Town. The area is known for its colonial architecture, cobblestone streets and historic character . Today the area remains home to much of the city’s commercial core, Chinatown, and the Waterfront.

On a day trip to Victoria from Seattle, I’d recommend checking out Antique Row , a three-block section of Fort Street which houses dozens of antique and collectible shops. Or if you’re seeking an authentic Cowichan Sweater or indigenous art, a visit to Cowichan Trading Co. is a must.

Vibrant Bastion Square contains some of the finest restaurants, pubs, and cafes in Victoria – as well as a seasonal artisan market. And the area is also home home to North America’s second oldest Chinatown between the 5-600 block of Fisgaard Street .

Fan Tan Alley is likely the area’s most popular attraction. This quaint alleyway that houses a variety of restaurants, cafes and boutiques is considered to be North America’s narrowest street.

#3B- Pick One of the Heavy Hitters (2.5-3 hours)

If you’re willing to forgo the culture of Oldtown and cut back a little on your time spent in the Inner Harbour you should still have plenty of time to partake in one of Victoria’s “big two” attractions – Butchart Gardens or a Victoria whale watching tour .

The whale watching tours depart from the heart of the Inner Harbour, right next to Belleville Terminal.

This will give you plenty of time to make it back in time from your 3 hour tour to catch your evening boat back to Seattle.

But perhaps the most quintessentially Victoria experience is a visit to world famous Butchart Gardens. Located 25 minutes north of town in the suburb of Brentwood Bay, this 55 acre botanical garden attracts over one million visitors a year.

Despite its location, shuttles are available from outside the Fairmont Empress Hotel . So if you manage to book your visit online in advance a trip is more than doable. You may even have time to pair your visit with a trip to nearby Butterfly Gardens .

Seattle to Victoria Ferry Day Trip: How it Works

As I mentioned before, day trips to Victoria from Seattle are best done with the sleek passenger ferry service offers passengers a full range of amenities.

Aboard, you’ll be provided with comfortable seating, a duty free store, and plenty of food and beverage options.

The ferry even has an outdoor deck where you can take in the stunning views of Puget Sound and the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

As you pass through the quaint Gulf Islands you may even encounter a bald eagle, some dolphins, or even a pod of orcas!

Departure – 7:30/8:00 AM

To maximize you day trip, it’s best to trake the ferry that leaves bright and early from Pier 69 in Downtown Seattle .

The terminal is close to Belltown , as well as a short stroll from the Pike Place Market and many Seattle hotels .

You should arrive one hour prior to departure time.

However, you will have 15 minutes courtesy prior to departure to make the final boarding call.

Parking is available for just $10 per calendar day at the nearby Bell Street Pier garage , directly across Alaskan Way from the Edgewater Hotel.

Aboard the Boat – 2 hrs 45 min

The ferry ride to Victoria lasts approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes – giving you plenty of time to relax and enjoy the Pacific Northwest’s stunning scenery.

You’ll definitely want to keep your camera on hand as you enter Victoria’s postcard perfect Inner Harbour.

The vessel doesn’t travel across open seas, though choppy weather is a possibility – that said, don’t expect to feel many bumps as it’s a very large ship.

The Victoria Clipper arrives in Victoria at 10:45 am at the Belleville Terminal in Victoria’s Inner Harbour.

The terminal is perfectly situated for you to start exploring the Garden City the minute you get off the boat.

You’ll have a few immigration formalities to go through first: so make sure you bring one of the following documents:

• Passport Card
• Enhanced Driver License or an Enhanced ID Card (EDL/ID)

Once you’ve cleared customs it should be smooth sailing.

You’ll have 5-6 hours to explore: take a tour, check out an attraction or enjoy the city’s many bars and restaurants.

You’ll then be required to return to the terminal in time for your early evening departure and do the entire procedure in reverse.

Routes vary depending on whale sightings and weather. A typical route takes us along Victoria’s scenic waterfront to Oak Bay and the Chain Islets, where we pause to watch harbour seals and seabirds. From there, we often head east to San Juan Island, or north along the Saanich Peninsula. When whale sighting reports come in, we typically alter course towards whales within range of the boat. Round trip distance is usually 50 to 80 km.

How old do you have to be to go on a tour? Our covered vessel tours welcome people of all ages, but the zodiacs are restricted to those that are 6 years old and above.

What is the boat ride like? Exciting and sometimes quite adventurous. Depending on the weather and conditions on the water, the experience can be wild and wet, smooth and dry, or any combination of the two. A typical zodiac trip experiences more ocean spray, and passengers can be splashed at some point along the route. Morning tours and those on covered vessels are usually the calmest.

What is the best time of year to see whales? While it is possible to see whales at any time of the year, there is a peak season from May through October. During this peak season our whale sighting success rate is over 95% .

Will we really see whales? Southern Vancouver Island is the best place to see whales in the wild! There is a chance of seeing a number of different species of whales including  Killer Whales, Humpback Whales, Minke whales, and Gray whales.

Where do I board the boat? Depending on which tour you’re on, boarding will take place at one of our two locations.

What should I wear? During the summer (June through August), light summer tops and pants or shorts are fine, but it’s a good idea to bring layers such as a fleece jacket or sweater. It is surprisingly cool traveling quickly over the ocean. On cool days, evening trips and during the spring (April – May) and fall (September – October), long pants, sweaters, snug fitting hats and warm footwear is recommended.

Can I bring a camera? Yes! If you are joining us on a zodiac tour, we recommend talking to captain before your tour as he may recommend that you put it in the dry storage beneath your seat depending on the wind, weather, and sea conditions on the day of tour. Onboard covered vessel tours, if we experience inclement weather you can leave it in the heated indoor cabin, protected from the elements.

Are there bathrooms on the boat? There is a bathroom onboard all covered vessel tours.

Are there snacks and beverages available for purchase on board? Drinks and snacks are available for purchase on board covered vessel tours.

What is your cancellation policy? 24- hour cancellation policy

Victoria Clipper Ferry Reservation

Fantastic trip – wasn’t just about the Orcas (although they were brilliant!), we saw humpback whale, sea otter, bald eagle, sea lions, harbour and elephant seals too. Staff onboard were really knowledgeable and the backdrop of the mountains in Washington State was just spectacular. All in all, a great trip and sensitively done.

I have just returned from Vancouver and the highlight seeing at least 4 pods of Killer Whales, seals and sea lions after sailing out from Victoria Harbour. We had onboard a very knowledgeable naturalist who answered all questions with gushing enthusiasm and nothing was too much trouble. Fabulous.

This experience was definitely on my bucket list and it did not disappoint. We went with Captain Mick on a zodiac boat. He was very educative and funny. We were lucky enough to spot a mom Humpback whale and her calf and 2 orca families. Next to that we saw seals. The zodiac experience made it so much more fun!

Seattle to Victoria B.C. | your guide to the ultimate weekend getaway

Ahh, Victoria.  Just thinking about spending a weekend there has me feeling a mix of excitement and oddly, peace.  Perhaps that’s because it’s a destination that can offer you either of these, and anything in between.

Victoria BC (on Vancouver Island) is a perfect spot to escape to for a day from Seattle (or Vancouver).   In a relatively short but scenic journey, you’ll be transported to a city that showcases its English heritage, while at the same time, embraces a new vibe as its old brick warehouses are transformed into hip boutiques, and a plethora of great eateries.  

You’ll soon quickly see that although you can have a great day trip to Victoria, you really should plan to stay longer.  How many days do you need?  I’d highly recommend at least two.  We spent a long weekend there, and could easily have stayed longer. And when I return next, I plan on exploring beyond Victoria.

So let’s not muck around, let’s plan now to make it a weekend getaway!

How to GET TO Victoria from Seattle

Imagine flying over Vancouver Island, viewing all of its beauty from above, then coming in to land right in the centre of all the activity, on the harbour front.  This is certainly a grand way to start your weekend, and a great option if you’re also wanting to maximise every minute of your weekend.

Your other alternative is not too shabby either.  The ferry from Seattle departs from a downtown pier, and travels among the San Juan Islands before it reaches Victoria.  Being on the water, you have the opportunity to see some of the islands up close as you head by, and you may just be spoiled by the spotting of some local wildlife. Our trip on the ferry was kinda magical – the sea was like glass most of the way, and we were spoiled with whale sightings along the way.

And guess what – you can combine these two options to get the best of each way.

Whichever way you travel, you will arrive in the heart of Victoria’s bustling harbour, overlooked by some seriously impressive historical & grandiose buildings. 

You’ve got a couple of options for your ferry and / or seaplane.

From downtown Seattle :  Clipper Vacations for your ferry and Kenmore Air for your seaplane.  Both of these companies offer options of combining the two in a Sea & Sky package.

They also offer heavily discounted parking in downtown for your car.

The ferry journey is a little under 3 hours, while the seaplane is 45 minutes.

From Port Angeles : BlackBall Ferry Line – 90 minutes (also a take your car option)

Where to STAY in Victoria, B.C.

Victoria is often referred to as the ‘walking city’, and once there, you’ll see why.  All of the inner harbour area is very walkable, so any accommodation in this area is recommended.

If you’re wanting to splurge, nothing else will compare to the experience at The Fairmont Hotel.

However, there are a ton of other lovely hotels, and delightful Air BNB’s to stay in.

Top things to SEE & DO in Victoria

Whale watching.

For me, whale watching and Victoria are synonymous.  It is the perfect environment to view orcas, humpback and minke whales, alongside sea lions, seals and porpoises.

You may see whales at any time of year, however, peak season for whale watching is from May through October, when salmon are migrating.

A whale tour was at the top of my list of things to do in Victoria.  But sadly, I learned a lesson here, and did not get to do a tour.  At the time, some tour companies did not run every day, with many operators only sailing on days that cruise liners were in town.  On the Monday I had set aside to do our tour, the only tour had already sold out.  ☹  Which just means I’m going to have to go back to do it.

Visit the Butchart Gardens

The Butchart Gardens are definitely one of Victoria’s stand out attractions.  I still remember seeing photos of it as a child in Vancouver, and asking if we could visit.  It is a destination whose appeal transcends age.   I wonder if Jennie Butchart had a full vision of what would become when she started transforming the former quarry with the Sunken Garden?  Her story and achievement are quite remarkable, and it is an absolute joy to be able to wander many of the 55 acres that make up the Gardens today, which are now a National Historic Site of Canada.  Whatever the weather, or the season, you cannot help but be impressed, and will treasure your time there.  As any garden does, everything here changes with the season, and anytime is the right time to come.

Viewing the gardens does involve a lot of walking, so make sure you wear comfortable shoes.

Top Tip: If you’re intending to do both whale watching and the Butchart Gardens, choose a tour that combines them, for a better deal.  

Tour the Parliament Buildings

The Parliament Buildings combine with the Fairmont Express Hotel in creating an incredible presence and majestic impression on the Victoria harbourfront.   They are two equally iconic buildings, that you simply cannot miss.    In fact, both buildings were designed by Francis Rattenbury, an English immigrant, which explains their very English look.

Did you know that Victoria is actually the capital of British Columbia?  So the Parliament Buildings are the home of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, and as much as a tourist destination, they are very much in use.

If you like character, and architecture, then touring the Buildings needs to be on your list.  There are free guided tours daily (except when shut as currently in our covid world.)

Outside, the grounds and gardens are quite lovely.  There’s a statue of Queen Victoria on the front lawn, as well as the British Columbia Legislature Cenotaph commemorating the prince’s World War I, World War II, Korean War and Afghanistan War dead.  

At night, the entire perimeter of the building is lit with strings of lights, it’s a magical site to see.  Yes – you need to take photos of it during the day and at night.

Dine at the Fairmont Empress Hotel for high tea

High Tea at the Fairmont is a century old tradition, and Victoria institution.  And with that comes a pretty hefty price (C$82 per person).  But, if you’re up for the splurge, it truly is a unique Victorian experience, in the most elegant surroundings.  Of course, you’ll need to dress for the occasion – not just to fit in, but also because there is a strict dress code.

I think it is quite lovely that traditions like dressing up for an occasion like this exist. Who doesn’t love an excuse to get out the glad rags and heels?!

If that splurge is too much, there are a couple of other places that also offer a Victorian high tea experience.  Check out Abkhazi Garden and Tea Room and the White Heather Tea Room .

Visit China Town

The “Gate of Harmonious Interest” marks the entrance to the oldest China Town in Canada.   The gate was built in 1981 to symbolise a shift towards the new multiculturalism in Canada.  It won’t take you long to explore the area, as it’s really only just a couple of blocks, but you should include the very unique Fan Tan Alley, the narrowest street in Canada.  It is only 35” wide (90cm) at its narrowest point! 

And of course, if you love Chinese food or tea, this is the place to enjoy it.

Fisherman’s Wharf

If you’d like to move away from English architecture to something more colourful and vibrant, then a visit to the float homes (house boats) on Fisherman’s Wharf should be on your list.  Or if you’re hungry for seafood!

There is something so intriguing about float homes, they seem to bring a little bit of whimsy to life.  I wonder if that’s true for those who live in them?  Wandering past them along the docs of the wharf, we couldn’t help but stop at each one, enjoying the colour, the architecture, and in some cases, the weird and wonderful.  

Alongside the float homes, the wharf also houses plenty of places to eat and shop, and is the departure point for many marine based activities.  Including being a Pickle Boat stop.

Take a ride on a Pickle Boat

The Victorian pickle boats stole my heart.  I mean – look how cute they are!

Victoria is a very walkable city, but I think you simply must take a pickle boat ride at some time, just to experience it.

The pickle boats operate as water taxis across the inner harbour area ($7.50 a ride), or there are a range of tours you can take.  The Pickle Pub crawl sounds like lots of fun!

Wander the Inner Harbour

Downtown Victoria is blessed to sit on the edge of a magnificent harbour, framed by statuesque buildings on one side, with views to commanding mountains in the distance.  The harbour itself is a hive of activity, with sea planes landing, large ferries coming and going, cruise ships docked, and pickle boats criss crossing the water.

Just walking around the harbour is an activity in itself.  There are plenty of spots to stop and sit and take it all in.  You’ll probably find plenty of entertainment on land as well, market stalls are common, as are buskers.

Walk the West Bay Walkway  to Esquimalt

If you’ve been indulging in many of Victoria’s delicious foods, you may feel the need to walk a little bit of it off.  It may help justify dinner and dessert tonight right?

The West Bay Walkway (or Songhees walkway) starts just across the Johnson St. bridge, and runs around the foreshore.  It’s pretty much flat, and well paved, and the views are just lovely.  We walked from the bridge to the West Bay Marina, where there’s another community of floating homes.  One way it’s about 3km. 

It’s a great place to watch the float planes land.

 You can continue your walk and return home, or you can catch a Pickle boat here, back to the Inner Harbour.

Shop at Market Square

What visit would be complete without a little retail therapy right?  For me that doesn’t even have to include actually buying anything, I just love to browse beautiful shops.  If you’re like me, then you need to head to Market Square.  

Boutique shops with unique merchandise are housed in brightly painted heritage buildings, which just adds another element to the enjoyment of wandering this area.  At night they’re also lit up beautifully, so it turns into a shopping wonderland.  Who wouldn’t want to shop here?!  (And no, I wasn’t able to resist a couple of beautiful pieces for my home, that still make stop and smile and remember our time in Victoria.)

Alongside Market Square, you’ll probably also enjoy wandering up Government Street.  It’s a bit more touristy, but there’s a good mix of retail and entertainment options.  There may or may not also be a couple of lovely chocolate shops on this street. (shhh)

If you have more time, consider some of these other ideas:

• Explore the Victoria Butterfly Gardens
• Learn more of Victoria’s history at the Royal B.C. museum
• Tour the stately home of an 1800’s coal baron – Craigdarroch Castle
• Wander the 200 acre Beacon Hill Park 

Best places to EAT in Victoria

Head here for an incredible breakfast.  This is a local institution, so you need to be prepared to line to get in.

Il Terrazzo

Do you have a special occasion to celebrate, or are you a foodies?  If you answer yes to either of these, you’ll want to pick Il Terrazzo for dinner.   The restaurant is full of atmosphere, and the food – oooh la la.  Make sure you book.

The Bard and Banker

You’ll be hard pressed to realise this is not a beautiful restoration of a grand English pub.   Although the building is historic, the insides are all a faithful reproduction.  It is beautiful.  If you are / have a beer connoisseur with you, this is where you need to head.  They have more 30 beers on tap (apparently this is an important fact!) They also do a great breakfast deal (and yummy brekkie to go with the deal).  There are numerous spots to enjoy the pub, including a small rooftop terrace.

A beautiful spot to enjoy lunch if the sun is shining.  The Local is easy to spot – it’s the place with all the hanging baskets.

Getting AROUND Victoria

Downtown Victoria is quite a condensed area, and as such, it’s very walkable. We always tend to walk more while we’re vacationing anyway – it helps justify all those extra snacks and delicious meals out.

BUT you may wish just for novelty sake, to take a Pickle Boat across the harbor at some stage (see above).

Or, take a horse and cart and feel as regal as the buildings look.

And, there’s always bikes, scooters, and taxis to be hired if you don’t want to walk, or want to go a little further.

So there you have it. A ton of crazy good, fun, & spectacular activities to keep you well entertained while in Victoria B.C., and a wealth of delicious, character filled places to eat and drink. A weekend away never looked so good!

Wow this all sounds great! I’ve always had the idea to visit Seattle and Vancouver together, but never looked into it so this was great. I never knew you could see whales! I would definitely want to take the ferry!

Oh, glad to know that Victoria is a walkable city, because I love walking and can’t drive. I’d love to check out the pubs and try the perverted ice cream. And if I have some extra cash to spare, I might also go for the high tea at the Fairmont Empress Hotel.

What a perfect weekend getaway! The boat from Seattle to Victoria sounds awesome – particularly in that it goes through the San Juan Islands. I road tripped through this whole region, and it is so beautiful!

Last year we went on a cruise leaving from Vancouver. This was the first time as an adult that I have been in this part of the world. I definitely put it on my list for a return visit. Definitely adding Victoria when I do get back.

How to Get to Victoria, BC, by Boat or Plane

Despite sitting just 75 miles northwest of Seattle, British Columbia 's island city feels distinctly foreign. A Canadian capital with European flair, Victoria's signatures include fancy tea, a walkable downtown, horse-drawn carriages—and a giant body of water to cross from the mainland. We broke down the best ways to travel to the quaint Vancouver Island metropolis; don't forget your passport (or other appropriate border-crossing materials).

Black Ball Ferry from Port Angeles

Three times a day, the MV Coho sets sail from downtown Port Angeles on the Olympic Peninsula for a 90-minute trip to Victoria Harbour. The Black Ball company traces its roots to the nineteenth century and eventually sold most of its fleet to the state to form the Washington State Ferries. Today this route can carry just over 100 vehicles ($70 plus fees for most cars), making reservations ($11–16) recommended on weekends and hard to nab on holidays.

Reaching the American terminus from Seattle involves either a Washington State Ferries ride (say, Seattle to Bainbridge) or a drive over the Tacoma Narrows bridge. Given the middle-of-town end point in Victoria—the MV Coho docks practically on the front lawn of the famous parliament buildings—tourists can leave cars in Port Angeles and walk on the ferry ($21 plus fees).

BC Ferries from Tsawwassen

British Columbia's busiest port sits south of Vancouver, the name Tsawwassen coming from a First Nation whose traditional territory stretched from the Gulf Islands to the Fraser River. Giant ferries perform the 95-minute crossing across the Salish Sea around a dozen times per day, often departing on the hour, and each boat can take up to 350 cars ($62 CAD plus fees) and near-endless walk-ons ($18 CAD plus fees), though reservations ($17 CAD) can be hard to score at busy times.

Notably, this ferry superhighway doesn't reach all the way to Victoria proper. BC Ferries dock at Swartz Bay on Vancouver Island, about 20 miles north of the city. BC Transit busses run into the heart of the city (and Tsawwassen has several parking lots to leave a car overnight), but this route is less convenient for carless travel. Don't forget to factor in the U.S.-Canadian border crossing time en route to the Tsawwassen terminal.

Victoria Clipper Passenger Ferry from Seattle

The fastest water route to Victoria departs from Belltown, at Pier 69. Since the 1980s, the Clipper catamarans have run the trip, a little less than three hours, in comfort that bridges a sightseeing trip with straight-up transportation. The passenger-only  Clipper V has two decks, and therefore several class options; the lower deck has airplane-style seating, with the upper deck featuring leather seating, tables, and complimentary snacks. One-way fares start at $99 in winter and go up to $119 in the high summer season, and advance reservations are a must during busy times—but round-trip purchases come with as much as a $39 discount.

Clipper passengers step off the boat onto a Victoria Harbour dock, walking distance to many hotels and a short taxi ride to others. The city's one big out-of-town attraction, Buchart Gardens , sits 13 miles north on Vancouver Island, but both Clipper packages and other operators offer bus rides to the famed flower extravaganza.

Sea travel? In this century? Flights into Victoria shrink travel time significantly, especially given the seaplanes Kenmore Air sends from Lake Union directly to Victoria Harbour. Two or three scheduled flights (starting at $212 one way in summer) take off per day, the ride just 45 minutes and a thrill unto itself. Like the Clipper ferries, the downtown-to-downtown experience makes for an easy, carless vacation; the seaplanes land directly in front of the Fairmont Empress.

Note that while Washington's enhanced driver's license, passport card, or NEXUS card can be good for passage through land and sea borders, a full passport is required for all fliers. Oh, and Alaska Air also flies from Sea-Tac to Victoria's land airport near the Swartz Bay ferry terminal in normal, wheeled planes—but where's the fun in that?

Finally, one last way to Vancouver Island—the Washington State Ferries  system, with its once rare stop in Sidney, BC. The Anacortes-San Juans ferry route used to include a seasonal side detour to this port near Swartz Bay, but service halted due to the pandemic and now will not resume until summer 2023 at the earliest due to staff and boat shortages.
