Flagstaff’s local breweries have something to please everyone’s craft beer palate, from distinctive IPAs and light-hearted Sessions to limited-edition brews and Kölsch-style ales.

So grab a passport and start exploring the wild creativity that has turned Flagstaff into Arizona’s Craft Brew City. Best of all, your journey ends with the treasure of a lasting trail memory: Our special-edition commemorative nonic-style pint glass. Cheers!

Trekking the Flagstaff Brewery Trail is as easy as 1-2-3:

Visit flagstaffbrewerytrail.loyalbrew.com to register for the digital passport. a pdf version of the brewery trail map can be found here ..

• Using the digital passport, visit all eight breweries (no purchase necessary).
• Stamps are claimed via a geo-tag feature within each brewery’s premises or by taking a ‘selfie’ and uploading the picture to the passport.
• Once you have all eight stamps, bring your completed digital passport to one of two Flagstaff Convention & Visitors Bureau locations to receive your commemorative souvenir pint glass: Flagstaff Visitor Center or Flagstaff Convention & Visitors Bureau .

Historic Brewing Company

The 15-handle Taproom may have limited hours, but this brewery’s must-see location in an industrial park is only outdone by the “crafted awesomeness” of each beer. Piehole Porter is the undisputed star as a cherry-vanilla porter that drinks like a liquid cherry cordial.

Wanderlust Brewing Company

Wanderlust brews beers inspired by a lifetime of travel and adventure. Their specialty is Belgian and German inspired beers, and also modern twists on classic american styles. Flagships include the 928 Local, a wild-fermented Farmhouse Ale, and Pan American Stout which contains Mexican vanilla and locally roasted coffee.

Mother Road Brewing Company’s Downtown Brewery

Named for Historic Route 66, “Mother Road” is most famous for its award-winning Tower Station IPA, an India Pale Ale with aromas of tangerine and pineapple. Downtown Brewery is an ideal setting to relax with a pint and linger over conversation or a book from the small library.

Beaver Street Brewery

Opening its doors in March of 1994, Flagstaff’s first brewpub has remained a local favorite for award-winning craft beers in the tradition of Railhead Red, R&R Oatmeal Stout, and Red Rock Raspberry. Unique features include the Brews & Cues game room and a “hops garden.”

The popular Flagstaff Brewery Trail introduces beer drinkers to northern Arizona's craft brew scene, taking you from crisp ales to local lagers.

The Flagstaff Brewery Trail (formerly the Flagstaff-Grand Canyon Ale Trail) makes a bold claim by stating northern Arizona is the craft beer hub of the Southwest.

While beer aficionados in Phoenix and Tucson may balk at such a statement, it's one that northern Arizona can back up. Here, the enthusiasm surrounding hometown brews is as palpable—and palatable—as the scent of pine trees in the air.

And the Flagstaff Brewery Trail Passport is your golden ticket to fully experiencing it.

Pick up this self-guided tour of local craft breweries at the Flagstaff Visitor Center or print out a copy at home. Complete the tour by visiting all nine breweries and in whatever length of time you want and whenever you want. Turn in your completed form at one of two Flagstaff visitor centers and receive a free commemorative pint glass.

Stop 1: Dark Sky Brewing Company

This brewery pays homage to Flagstaff's designation as the first International Dark Sky community in both its name and starry-themed decor. Order some Pizzicleta wood-fired pizza for the table and enjoy with your choice of craft brew with names such as Rye'd Open Spaces (IPA), Endless Nights (stout), and Woodland Cathedral (barleywine).

Stops 2 and 3: Beaver Street Brewery and Lumberyard Brewing Company

Beaver Street Brewery and its sister brewery, Lumberyard Brewing Company , are staples in the Northern Arizona brew scene. Opened in 1994, Beaver Street Brewery was the only brewpub in historic downtown Flagstaff for years. As such, the beers are time-tested and beloved. Beaver Street has a classic feel with its checkerboard floors, big wooden bar and lots of odes to the nearby train tracks. The Railhead Red Ale is a reliable, caramel-malted and full-bodied beer, also a Great American Beer Festival Gold Medal Winner.

Stops 4 and 5: Mother Road Brewing Company

You can thank John Steinbeck—who proclaimed Route 66 the "Mother Road" in his literary classic The Grapes of Wrath —for this brewery's name. Opened near a stretch of the route in 2004, the popular Mother Road Brewing Company has expanded to two locations a little more than a mile apart: the original Pike location in downtown Flagstaff and the Butler location in a more residential area. Mother Road's legions of fans come from near and far for a taste. Best to book a room nearby after a pint of midnight-colored Lost Highway Double Black IPA, a robust beer at a whopping 8% ABV that's a blend of espresso, chocolate and orange.

Stop 6: Grand Canyon Brewing Company + Distillery

The beers at the Williams, Arizona-based Grand Canyon Brewing Company are inspired by outdoor adventures at nearby landmarks, including the Horseshoe Bend brew, which includes grapefruit and tropical flavors with an undercurrent of caramel. The brewery even organizes rafting trips through the Grand Canyon on the Colorado River—and there's a beer that captures the spirit of a refreshing, roaring rapid (Grand Canyon Expeditions Wheat Ale), which is perfectly fine to enjoy on dry land.

Stop 7: Historic Brewing Co.'s Barrel + Bottle House

You'll find more than a dozen housemade beers at Historic Brewing Barrel + Bottle House's Flagstaff location, and reading about the brews is almost as fun as tasting them. Creative names include Deer Lord, Piehole Porter (a customer favorite) and Joe Rye'd, with kegs rotating often. Plus, for the vine-inclined, there's wine from sister-company Grand Canyon Wine Co. Grab a flight of six beers or wines, served on a book (the vibe at Historic is a bit hipster), or try every single tap for $40.

Stop 8: Flagstaff Brewing Company

At this downtown Flagstaff staple, brewing applies to both beer and beans as the location serves both as a pub and coffee shop all day, every day. So, whether you prefer to say you stopped at Flagstaff Coffee Company or Flagstaff Brewing Company , you won't leave thirsty. And if you prefer still more options, ask to see the "whiskey list." FBC, as it's known, serves one of the most extensive collections of single malts in the country, including some no longer in production.

Stop 9: Wanderlust Brewing

What better way to conclude your Flagstaff craft beer journey than with a stop at this small brewery inspired by the love of travel and exploration? Using traditional methods, with "a particular soft spot for Saisons and Farmhouse-style ales," owner Nathan Friedman makes each brew his own with unique twists such as substituting puffed jasmine rice for wheat in the Jasmine Terrace Rice Saison or adding organic fruit puree to his sours. The taproom is dog-and-child friendly. Food isn't served here, but guests are welcome to bring their own or buy from the food trucks frequently parked outside.

Mother Road Brewing Company

Mother Road Brewing Company is a renowned craft brewery known for its dedication to quality and its homage to the historic Route 66, often referred to as the "Mother Road." Historic Barrel + Bottle House

Historic Brewing Company got its start in Flagstaff in 2013. Since its inception, it has opened tasting rooms in Flagstaff and Williams, AZ. Historic has a knack for incorporating some less traditional ingredients into their beers including but not limited to their Piehole Porter (a cherry vanilla porter) or their Undercover Cucumber (a blonde ale infused with cucumber). We recommend starting at their Barrel + Bottle house located in downtown Flagstaff where you can try some of their exceptional brews, craft cocktails, and delicious pub fare. If you have time stop by the original brewery located in East Flagstaff.

Lumberyard Brewing Co.

Lumberyard Brewing Company, established in 2010, is centrally located in downtown Flagstaff, just south of the train tracks. Its proximity to the train station offers a unique backdrop as you enjoy one (or two) finely crafted beers on their patio as trains pass below a breathtaking view of the San Francisco Peaks. Lumberyard is true to its classic styles offering great staples like their Flagstaff IPA or its Railhead Red Ale. They also have a full bar and extensive food menu so be sure to grab something to eat while you are there.

Beaver Street Brewery (Brews & Cues)

Established in 1994, Beaver Street Brewery holds the distinction of being the first brewery in Flagstaff. As the (older) sister brewery to Lumberyard Brewing Company, this establishment shares some of the same signature beers found at the sister pub while also offering a variety of its own unique handcrafted beers including its Red Rock Raspberry Ale and the Midnight Black IPA. Beaver Street is one of our first choices for a sit-down dining experience as they offer a warm, inviting brewpub atmosphere, along with extensive food and cocktail menus. Next door to the pub is their Brews & Cues pool hall where they offer a limited Beaver Street food menu and access to all the same great beers that their restaurant offers.

Wanderlust Brewing Company

Wanderlust Brewing Company, founded in 2013, is slightly off the beaten path just east of downtown Flagstaff and absolutely worth a visit. Wanderlust is especially known for its Saisons and Farmhouse Ales, but also offers other great styles including stouts, sours, and IPAs. This taproom hosts weekly music acts and will occasionally have a local rotating food truck (see their event calendar).

Flagstaff Brewing Company

Flagstaff Brewing Company stands out due to its rich history and status as one of the oldest breweries in Flagstaff, dating back to its establishment in 1994. This downtown pub is also one of our favorite destinations for live music and events, as they regularly host artists on their indoor dance floor or outdoor stage. They offer a variety of their core brews as well as a large selection of guest taps, a full bar, and a food menu. For you whiskey lovers it is also worth noting that Flagstaff Brewing Company boasts one of the largest selections of whiskey and bourbon in the country!

Grand Canyon Brewing + Distillery

Grand Canyon Brewing’s Flagstaff brewpub is one of the newest additions to the area’s craft beer offerings. Based out of Williams, AZ, this location features a five-barrel brewhouse that allows them a unique selection of small-batch brews as well as a handful of local guest brewery taps. As the name suggests this pub also offers an assortment of their in-house craft spirits and cocktails. This location also boasts a tasty menu of traditional pub fare.

Drinking Horn Meadery

Although they don’t brew beer, the Drinking Horn Meadery is worthy of this list as it is an established name in Flagstaff's craft beverage scene. Mead is an ancient fermented beverage made from honey, water, and often fruits, spices, or herbs. Drinking Horn Meadery offers a diverse selection of meads, ranging from traditional honey-based varieties to creative and flavored concoctions. This establishment provides a welcoming tasting room where patrons can enjoy and learn about different styles of mead and take a pallet cleanser from a long day of beer sampling!

If you are still thirsty after visiting the local breweries we thought it would be worth mentioning a couple of our favorite taphouses for sampling some of the best rotating Arizona craft beers in the state. Hops on Birch and Mountain Top Tap Room each offer great selections from local and/or Arizona state-based breweries. Both of these taphouses are also great spots to catch live local music!

Flagstaff Brewery Trail

The Flagstaff Brewery Trail is a self-guided journey through the city's vibrant craft beer scene, featuring a collection of renowned breweries. Made in the Shade Beer Tasting Festival

Flagstaff's Made in the Shade Beer Tasting Festival, Established in 2013, ranks among the region's top beer celebrations. Hosted annually at Flagstaff's Coconino County Fairgrounds, it showcases an assortment of local and regional breweries. Attendees indulge in sampling up to 100 distinct brews crafted by top US brewers. Alongside the beer tasting, enjoy diverse live music, family-friendly entertainment, and delectable fare from local vendors. The festival also features educational sessions on craft brewing art. Two Day Itinerary

Discovering the Flagstaff Brewery Trail in Northern Arizona

To escape Phoenix’s triple-digit temperatures during the summer, I head north, and one of my favorite beat-the-heat destinations is Flagstaff . Not only is it a great base for exploring the Grand Canyon , Route 66 , and Meteor Crater , Flagstaff is home to some of the best breweries in the state. I’ve sampled a few brews on visits over the years, but this time, I decided to spend a day sipping a few pints on the Flagstaff Brewery Trail .

The Flagstaff Brewery Trail

Formerly known as the Flagstaff Ale Trail, the Flagstaff Brewery Trail features many of the same watering holes as its predecessor, but now, instead of purchasing a passport, you can print a free “passport” out at home. (Unfortunately, while the previous passport entitled you to discounts on your beers, this one does not.) You take your passport to each brewery and collect a sticker, no purchase necessary.

When you’ve collected a sticker for each stop, you can turn your completed passport into the Flagstaff Visitor Center at 1 East Route 66 in the historic downtown train station or to the city’s convention and visitors bureau at 323 W. Aspen Ave. and exchange it for a brewery trail pint glass. There’s no deadline to collect all of the stickers, and you must be 21 to participate.

Since I have a dozen passports for other trails already, I didn’t actually print out this one or collect its stickers. But, I hit the trail thirsty and found some new favorite breweries.

(While visiting, my husband served as my designated driver. If you don’t have a designated driver, you can call a taxi or rideshare service or take the bus. Many of the breweries are within walking distance of each other.)

Beaver Street Brewery

Opened in 1994, Beaver Street Brewery is Flagstaff’s first brewery. I’ve visited many times before, so I didn’t stop on this visit, but it’s definitely one of the city’s best. Try one of the mainstays: Conductor IPA, Railhead Red, R&R Stout, Red Rock Raspberry, HopShot Red IPA, Black ‘N’ Raz, or Midnight Black IPA. Or, when it’s available, order my favorite, the Hefeweizen.

Beaver Street Brewery also serves amazing pizzas, burgers, and sandwiches. Its green chile stew is a dish my husband and I reminisce about often.

Lumberyard Brewing Co.

Looking to expand, the owners of Beaver Street Brewery opened Lumberyard Brewing Co. in the historic Halstead Lumberyard building in 2010. Some of the beers from Beaver Street Brewery, like the Railhead Red and Red Rock Raspberry, also appear on the menu here. Lumberyard also features several of its own brews, including the Pumphouse Porter and the Hazy Angle IPA. I ordered the Humphrey’s Hefe—I love hefeweizens—and it was tasty with my Vietnamese Burger topped with char sui pork, pepper jack, pickled daikon and carrots, fresh jalapeños, cucumbers, cilantro, and sriracha aioli. Lumberyard is my choice for burgers and brews and has a great patio.

Historic Brewing Company

This popular brewery has two Flagstaff locations. Drop by the brewery’s taproom at 4366 E. Huntington Dr. on the city’s east side to sip 16 of their rotating selections, including the brewery’s famous cherry vanilla Piehole Porter and its seasonal Undercover Cucumber, made with 150 pounds of cold-pressed cucumber in each batch. Downtown, the Barrel + Bottle House has 20 beers on tap plus a full liquor bar, specialty cocktails, wines, and arcade games.

The brewery has a third location, also a Barrel + Bottle House, in nearby Williams.

Wanderlust Brewing Co.

Taking its name from brewer Nathan Friedman’s love of travel, Wanderlust Brewing Co. specializes in Saisons and farmhouse ales but produces traditional-style brews from around the world. And, unlike many of Flagstaff’s other breweries, this one focuses on beer. It doesn’t serve food (although it does bring in food trucks) and is dog-friendly. Order the 928 Local, a farmhouse ale fermented with homemade yeast, or the Pan-American Stout, its popular oatmeal stout.

Mother Road Brewing Co.

You need to visit both Mother Road Brewing Co. locations, the original on Pike Street and the one on Butler Avenue, and collect stickers from both to complete the brewery trail, but given the quality of its beers, you won’t mind. I opt for Conserve and Protect Kolsch when I visit, but Mother Road is known for its IPAs. Sip the Daily Driver Session IPA, Lost Highway Double Black IPA, or Tower Station IPA, if that’s your bent. Experimental and seasonal beers are also available.

Flagstaff Brewing Company

Locally known as Flagbrew, this small brewery offers only a few of its brews on tap at any given time. Watch for the Three-Pin Pale Ale or Agassiz Amber, two of the brewery’s most popular beers. For a darker brew, ask for the Sasquatch Stout. Looking for a stiffer drink? Flagstaff Brewing Company also boasts one of the nation’s largest collections of single malts and small-batch bourbons, including Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year. Enjoy your beer or bourbon with the brewery’s burgers, sandwiches, soup, and salads.

Dark Sky Brewing Company

Named in honor of Flagstaff being designated the first dark sky city in the world, Dark Sky Brewing Company likes to push the limits of brewing. You can linger over a traditional-style beer, like the Wellenlange Kolsch I enjoyed on my visit, but you’re really missing out if you don’t at least sample one of the experimental offerings. I highly recommend Churro, an imperial stout with hints of cinnamon, vanilla, and coffee. Do yourself another favor and order a pizza from Pizzicletta, which operates in the brewery.

Grand Canyon Brewing Company

Ales and IPAs dominate the brews at Grand Canyon Brewing Company . Year-round offerings include the popular Kachina Throwback Ale, the official craft beer of the state’s NHL franchise, the Arizona Coyotes, and Trail Hike IPA, brewed to commemorate Grand Canyon National Park’s centennial. The brewery also has seasonal beers on tap and mixes cocktails featuring vodka, rum, and gin distilled at its distillery.

You can enjoy beers, cocktails, and food at Grand Canyon Brewing’s original location in Williams or the Flagstaff location. Tours of the brewery and distillery are available in Williams.

Bonus: Drinking Horn Mead Hall

While it’s not a stop on the brewery trail, Drinking Horn Mead Hall , located on Route 66 in downtown Flagstaff, deserves a mention. The meadery serves a not-too-sweet alcoholic mead sweetened mostly with fruit juices and occasionally with honey.

On your first visit, it’s well worth it to order a flight; order two flights to share with a friend, and you both can sample nearly every mead the Drinking Horn makes. My favorites were black cherry, strawberry, and lemon ginger, but the traditional mead was pretty amazing, too.

Flagstaff is one of the state’s best destinations for beer lovers. You will no doubt enjoy the cooler Northern Arizona as you sip your way through the city on the Flagstaff Brewery Trail. Wander has many great things you can explore during your time in Arizona .

3 of the best Flagstaff and Sedona Brewery Tours

Large tracts of Arizona may be arid, but these top three brewery tours in Sedona and Flagstaff are anything but dry.

Sedona and Flagstaff are 30 miles apart and one thing these two Arizona cities have in common is a surprising number of wineries and breweries. You will find that some excellent regional beers are crafted in the heart of the desert by skilled brewers. And a tour of these breweries is a great alterative activity to the outdoor pursuits for which the Red Rock Country is best known. Here are three of the best brewery tours, taking into account factors such as the value for money and number of beers samples provided. Cheers.

Verde Valley Brewery Tour

Literally meaning ‘green,’ the Verde Valley is given its name by the life-giving waters of Oak Creek, which runs through Sedona. And that river is also a great source of water for the various breweries dotted around the city. One is simply named Oak Creek Brewery. Another, Verde Brewery. This private excursion is designed to tailor the brewery tour to your preferences. Over the four hours you can stop by each of the four breweries open to visitors, or spend a little more time at two or three, allowing some space for adding in some sightseeing on the journey between each place. Historic Flagstaff Downtown Microbrewery Tour

A similar type of tour can be taken in Flagstaff, which is home to at least a dozen breweries, most of which are clustered around a five-block area of the Southside neighborhood. Following a very similar style to the Sedona trip above, this is a private tour, for a minimum of two people, which you can curate to explore beers fitting your preferred tastes. Visit up to four micro-breweries along the way. The tour is available most days of the year and the price per person is $44 less if you’re booking for a group of six or more people. From $234 per person.

Arizona Craft Beer Special Tour

If you can’t choose which city to visit, or you simply want to explore the best of Sedona and Flagstaff on the same tour, then this is the brewery tour to end all brewery tours. Over eight hours, you can pack in up to eight different microbreweries in Flagstaff and Sedona. Customize the itinerary to include a side-trip to one or more of the amazing natural wonders in the area, such as Slide Rock State Park, and then get straight back to sampling beers. You’ll get one flight or pint of beer at each location on all these tours. From $510 per person.

If you've ever wanted to trek without a backpack or exertion, this is the perfect trail for you.

There are many reasons to take a drive up I-17 to the northern Arizona mountain town of Flagstaff. In the summer, cooler air beckons overheated Phoenicians. In the spring, wildflowers fill alpine meadows for especially beautiful hikes. In the fall, golden leaves create an idyllic autumn backdrop and in the winter, Arizonans flock to play in the snow. 

Regardless of the season, Flagstaff's local craft beer scene is a reason in and of itself to make the trip, and most breweries can be found on the picturesque streets of historic downtown Flagstaff.

Although the small town ranks at number 16 on the list of Arizona's largest cities by population, it is the state's number four producer of beer.  This is largely thanks to Mother Road Brewing Co., a Flagstaff brewery that is number three statewide for the amount of beer produced. The city gets another boost from Lumberyard Brewing Co., which claims the eighth spot for most productive breweries statewide.

Mother Road and Lumberyard are well worth a stop on your visit to Flagstaff but don't skip over some of the smaller spots, like Historic Brewing Co., which churns out seasonal pie-flavored porters and Dark Sky Brewing Co., which happens to sling some of the best pizza in the state.

Here's your guide to the best places to drink craft beer in downtown Flagstaff. 

Mother Road Brewing Co.

Just off the main blocks of downtown Flagstaff, you'll find Mother Road Brewing Co. in a large white and black building that was once an industrial laundry facility.

Inside, it has a historic, industrial-chic feel and outside, a large back patio provides plenty of seating to enjoy the weather. Mother Road is very dog friendly and the seating area is often occupied by dogs of all varieties. 

The brewery serves its staple beers, like Tower Station and Daily Driver IPAs, but this location of the brewery is also where brewers get creative with new recipes.

Pro move: Try a small-batch brew from the rotating seasonal menu and grab a bite from the Roadside Stove food trailer parked outside.

Beaver Street Brewery

The vibe of this homey brewery falls somewhere between a diner and a dive bar, in the best way possible.

After a long hike, many stop into this fun, family-friendly spot for chicken pot pie, a meatloaf sandwich or one of the signature wood-fired pizzas. Checkered tiles line the floor and next door, those over 21 can play pool at green felt tables in the back.   At night, a festive atmosphere takes hold as college students gather for study breaks.

But the real reason to visit is the beer. Year-round staples include the popular Red Rock Raspberry and Conductor IPA. If you're looking for something different, take a peek at the seasonal menu to see what's new. This brewery shares ownership with Lumberyard Brewing, so don't be surprised to find some familiar brews on the beer list. 

Pro move:  On the patio, large umbrellas offer welcome shade, but be prepared, the space fills quickly on spring and summer days. Grab a seat, a pizza and a new brew from the seasonal menu.

Historic Brewing Barrel and Bottle House

The Historic Brewing Barrel + Bottle House is not the flashiest taproom in Flagstaff, but it is well worth seeking out.

Located at the back of a parking lot behind Ewa's Thai Cuisine, exposed beams and brick walls complete the rustic vibe inside and outside a small patio that welcomes customers and their dogs. 

This little taproom serves big flavor in a small space. The cherry and vanilla flavored Piehole Porter is a winning option, along with the thirst-quenching Salt River Lager. Keep an eye out for seasonal varieties including a Pumpkin Piehole Porter in the fall.

The food menu offers classic pub fare, like burgers and chicken tenders, along with a few specialties, including fried Brussels sprouts and loaded fries with pulled pork and beer cheese, but the beer is the real focus of this spot.

Pro move: Focus on tasting small-batch seasonal options ranging from IPAs to sours and spiced ales.

Lumberyard Brewing Co.

Lumberyard Brewing Co., as the name suggests, is located inside a historic wood warehouse next to Flagstaff's Amtrak train station. Trains frequently stop traffic surrounding the brewery, so build in a few extra minutes if you're planning to meet someone there. 

This brewery doubles as a full restaurant, serving hearty burgers, chicken wings and five different varieties of mac and cheese, which also happens to make it a popular choice for families. For a taste of the mac in a more shareable format, try the fried mac and cheese balls.

Settle inside or out front on the large patio for a solid meal with your brew. Choose from classics including Flagstaff IPA, Humphrey's Hefe and Railhead Red. A couple of specialty brews and seasonal offerings rotate throughout the year.

Pro move: It's important to note, this patio is not dog friendly, so leave the pups at home for this one.

Flagstaff Brewing Company

Cross over the tracks from Lumberyard to find Flagstaff Brewing Company.

Plywood walls and bar panels give this spot a decidedly casual feel, and it's become a favorite among hungry students and snowboarders just off the hill as it has more of a bar vibe, but still serves food.

Grab a buffalo chicken sandwich, a garlicky "Stank" burger or snack on some poutine and pretend Humphrey's Peak is actually in the snowy Canadian mountains. 

Staple brews are sure to remind you that you're indeed in Flagstaff, with local favorites like Sasquatch Stout, Agassiz Amber and Blackbird Porter.

Pro move: If you've spent the day carving it up on the mountain, this is the perfect place to celebrate getting those good turns by raising a glass with other local snow fans.

Dark Sky Brewery

On the west side of downtown Flagstaff, the aroma at Dark Sky Brewery lures people in as they walk past. As the door opens and closes, wafts of the cooking pizza dough are hard to resist.

Yellow light bulbs fill the space with cozy warmth, perfect for sharing a slice with friends. The brewery serves killer beers along with some of the best pizza in the city. Pizzicletta, a restaurant whose original location is connected to the Mother Road building, serves its menu out of Dark Sky.

The beer menu here is constantly rotating so don't be sad if what you tried last time is no longer available. Get ready to sip on something brand new. You'll often find lagers, stouts and ales on the menu.

For those with pups in tow, a small side patio offers shaded seating areas for both humans and dogs. 

Pro move: Snack on a Bees Knees pizza, made with sausage, sage and local honey while sampling the brewery's latest creations, like their milkshake IPA.

Flagstaff Breweries and the Local Craft Beer Scene

Flagstaff, Arizona has a lot going for it. It’s a great town for nature lovers, near a whole slew of national parks, national monuments, state parks, and a ski mountain. It’s a university town and the first Dark Sky City, plus you’ll have plenty of choices when it comes to Flagstaff Breweries and brewpubs.

There’s a full-blown Brewery Trail , with a printed map and all, so it’s not hard at all to put together your own Flagstaff beer tour on foot or with a designated driver. Many of the taprooms are clustered together and all offer ways to get some food into your stomach.

Here are a few Flagstaff breweries and pubs I checked out on my Arizona road trip , as well as some others you can hit up if you have more days there than I did.

Mother Road Flagstaff Brewery

Mother Road is a real community gathering place, something they have actively fostered in their marketing and their side activities. A portion of the sales from their Conserve and Protect Golden Ale–one of their most popular–goes to helping protect habitats for the area’s fish and wildlife.

The Mother Road was the nickname Steinbeck penned for Route 66 and that heritage is also a big part of the breweries identity, frequently appearing in their graphics. Their location is on the original stretch of Route 66 that went through here, one of its buildings a former laundromat. They serve us sliders and tacos made from grass-fed beef and try to source most of their food ingredients locally. They also have a larger production space a few miles away: this is the third-largest independent brewer in Arizona.

I especially liked their unfiltered 7.3% Tower Station IPA, which was a little different than the norm thanks to some pilsner malt in the mix. They also offer a session IPA that’s only 4.8% alcohol and a much stronger hazy IPA called “Limited Visibility,” with a finned 50’s car and a motel on the can. The Roy’s Red is malty, but not very red, while the golden ale would be a good cooler beer for after a hike or bike ride.

Mother Road Brewing Company is never trying to wow customers with their selection. There are usually only for or five beers in cans, maybe one or two more on tap. They do mix things up now and then with a bock, wheat beer, marzen, or something else that’s not too far out there.

In good weather they have ample outdoor seating, then dining tables inside in two buildings when it’s winter. See more about the brewery at their home page .

Lumberyard Brewing

The beer menu is not overly adventurous here, but Lumberyard Brewing gives the people what they want and you can buy some of their versions, such as Railhead Red, in cans. (I later picked up a six-pack of that just outside the Grand Canyon.) I got a flights of six beers to try out their offerings, including that red, a porter, a hazy IPA, a red IPA, a regular one, and a blonde. All were true to the style and a reliably good version, with the hazy IPA and the porter being the best of the lot in my opinion.

I liked the branding, the graphics, and the celebratory feel of the place. The bartenders helped in that regard: they seemed glad to be there, which isn’t always the case.

Dark Sky Brewing

This is the most experimental of the Flagstaff breweries I visited, the one that had the most beer nerds sampling different pints from the extensive board. You can tell as soon as you walk in that this is not going to be a routine taproom: there are whisky barrels with beer in them scattered around the building. They’re storing what’s going to come out as bourbon barrel beers and barley wines.

Open since 2014, they say, “Constantly pushing the limits of creativity, Dark Sky was named for Flagstaff’s designation as the 1st International Dark Sky City.” They certainly live up to the claim. At any given time you might see a grätzer, a Japanese rice lager, a black lager, and three different stouts on the menu. This place is heavenly for hop-heads too: they frequently have east coast and west coast style IPAs, including double and imperial versions. Everything I tried here was interesting, including the best German Oktoberfest marzen I’ve had outside of Europe.

When I visited in late 2021 the food choices were coming out of a pizza oven and had to be run up separately, but the brewery is expanding into an adjoining building and will have more on offer when the new kitchen is complete. See more at their website here .

Beaver Street Brewing

Beaver Street Brewing was so close to Motel Du Beau where I was staying that I could have crawled home from there if necessary. I didn’t stay that long though because the staffers were arguing about scheduling half the time I was there and the indoor space is rather cavernous: the place was originally a full-blown supermarket. In warm months they have an outdoor space, in the cold months they fire up antique pot-belly stoves.

The outdoor seating area looked more inviting for when the weather is nice and they usually have a good beer selection here. This is actually Flagstaff’s oldest brewery, established in 1994. Those were pioneer days in the U.S. microbrew industry.

They have seven mainstay beers at this Flagstaff brewery that they’ll usually have on tap, skewing a bit toward the dark side of craft beer with a stout, an amber ale (the one I liked best), a black IPA, and a “Black ‘N Raz” dark fruit beer. They also have two IPAs in the mix and some seasonal beers that can show up on tap at different times. The Whistle Stop Cafe has a full restaurant menu.

Grand Canyon Brewing

This is the brewpub that looks the most like a restaurant chain, situated in a strip mall close to the interstate and the university. It is the second location for the company: though the founder is a Flagstaff native, the original Grand Canyon brewing is in Williams down the road a bit. That’s still where the production all comes from until the few tanks on site here get fired up. For now it’s technically a taproom but the beer doesn’t have to travel very far. Eventually they’ll open a third in Page, Arizona.

This is one of the best Flagstaff breweries with food, popular enough for that to pull in kids and grandmas that aren’t drinking any beer. They serve a lot of typical hearty pub food like burgers and wings, but also charcuterie boards and salads. They have a smoker for ribs and barbecue.

Going by all the requests for this football game or that one when I was there on a Sunday, it apparently functions as a sports bar as well. It’s fine to belly up to the bar for a beer flight like I did though, or come with a few friends and hit one of the pool tables or foosball tables.

This is a good one to visit if you don’t really like beer: the company is also a distillery producing their own spirits. If you do love beer though, you’ll have plenty to choose from. The brewmasters like to experiment and there were 23 taps going when I visited. I could only sample a few on my flight, but the choices were consistently good and the funky farmhouse Hop Canyon hazy IPA has a lot going on in the glass. Seasonal selections are seldom boring, with a Vienna lager and a pumpkin spice porter listed on their site as I was writing this.

Other Flagstaff Breweries and Brew Pubs

These aren’t the only breweries in Flagstaff, Arizona of course. They’re just the ones I managed to squeeze into my itinerary while I was there for a few nights.

I don’t know how I possibly missed a place called Flagstaff Brewing Company since I was staying right on the other side of the train tracks. I must have walked right past the place while I was in town. Even though they’re right on Route 66, they have a nice courtyard sitting area in the back. If it’s too cold for that, try a Blackbird Porter then a Sasquatch Stout. They typically have six or eight of their own beers available, plus a few guest taps. See more at Flagbrew.com .

You’ll need a car to visit Historic Brewing and keep an eye on the GPS. It’s located in an industrial zone that you wouldn’t just be passing by. See more here .

The last one has clear appeal for travelers though it’s walking distance to downtown Flagstaff hotels: Wanderlust Brewing . It’s billed as “Traditional ales for unexplored trails.” They’re only open until 8:00 or 9:00 during the week, so plan to arrive at happy hour if you want to sample a few things at leisure. This is the best place to go for sours and Belgian ales, though our favorite on the naming side is the Pan American Stout. They also make their own hard seltzers if you have a non-beer-lover with you. See more at their site .

The city of Flagstaff is one of the places in Arizona that entered the “Brewpub” trend a little late. Its first brewery with an in-house taproom was built in 1994 and instantly became a hit and a local favorite.

Today, the city has several breweries with signature crafts and award-winning brews that are worth trying. Here are 7 of the best breweries you can find in Flagstaff, Arizona, and make sure you drop by!

1. Mother Road Brewing Company

Just like mothers are to their kids, Mother Road is passionate about caring for its community. Rather than just crafting premium beers, Mother Road also partners with non-profit organizations like Arizona Forward that help sustain the environment and improve the community.

Mother Road also makes donations through its beers like the Conserve & Protect Golden Ale, where a portion of its sales will be given to the Arizona Game and Fish Department. Moreover, Mother Road is an advocate of the Arizona Safer Bars Alliance, which helps prevent or at least reduce sexual harassment and aggression in bars, breweries, and the like.

2. Historic Brewing Company

Started as a humble brewery in 2013, Historic Brewing grew into a statewide brewery serving two cities. It has successfully established its name as one of the most popular breweries in Flagstaff and has expanded its production throughout the years. 

Historic’s hip Barrel + Bottle House in Flagstaff features a cocktail space and a beer taproom. Its cocktail space boasts a full liquor bar highlighting its cocktails and a lounge area for comfy dining. And as for its taproom, the space features 20 beers on tap, a spacious dining area with televisions, and a dog-friendly outdoor patio.

Visiting Wanderlust Brewing is like exploring a world of distinct beer styles. You can find many German-inspired ales and sours here, as well as Saisons and farmhouse ales. Grand Canyon’s Flagstaff location is a 5-barrel brewhouse crafting small batches of beers. Its taproom offers 23 taps of beers, including its award-winning Expeditions Wheat. The place also features a family-friendly dining area, a dog-friendly patio, and a full bar showcasing Grand Canyon Distillery’s award-winning spirits. 6. Beaver Street Brewery

Beaver Street is the very first brewpub in Flagstaff, owned by couple Winnie and Evan Hanseth. It officially opened its doors in March 1994, and since then, Beaver Street has earned numerous recognition and awards for its delicious crafts.

Today, Beaver Street offers a casual dining experience for everyone, especially for the whole family. Aside from its freshly brewed beer, the brewery also serves quality food fare as well as fresh-from-the-garden salads. Moreover, for more dining options, the brewery opened a temporary dog-friendly outdoor patio.

Since 2010, LumberYard has been operating in the heart of Flagstaff, serving the locals its award-winning brews. Look for multiple beer festivals throughout the year, including Made in the Shade Beer Festival and Blues & Brews, plus Arizona Beer Week celebrations. Luckily, you don’t have to wait to sample a dozen craft beers at once. Our walking beer tour directs you to the best local brews in the downtown corridor, all located within a half-mile radius of the railway station. Drink up!

If you’re in town for Made in the Shade, AZ Beer Week, or just a summer vacay in a “hopping” town, hotels can be a bit pricey. Steer clear of downtown after a beery good night and Uber back to nearby Mormon Lake Lodge for peace and quiet to sleep it off. Try newer favorites such as Lumberyard Brewing Company, Hops on Birch and Mother Road Brewing Company, all of which have opened in the last two years.

If you want to hit these watering holes and more in Flagstaff style, hop on the Alpine Pedaler’s 14-passenger, human-powered party on wheels. The ‘pedaler’ is part bicycle, part pub crawl and 100 percent fun. An Alpine Pedaler driver leads all groups but the passengers do all the pedaling along the streets of historic downtown and Southside Flagstaff. The regularly-scheduled pub crawl rolls rain or shine (or snow) and features VIP discounts at nearly a dozen establishments. In addition to the traditional pub crawl, the Alpine Pedaler offers monthly downtown restaurant tours and a beer & pizza tour.
