Avoid at all cost

Avoid ally all cost. My flight was cancelled due to lockdown restriction. They refused to give my refund and charged me £15 when by law they are not allowed to charge this fee as the lockdown was not our fault. They refused to read the link to the law I sent and emailed me back asking me to accept a voucher or be charged £15 to cancel. I also have one email saying that due to the pandemic and overwhelming cancellations, their refund system had broke. Down and they would not refund until the pandemic ended!!!! I have proof of all emails. I will now be chasing my refund via credit card dispute. Avoid these crooks at all cost!!!

A lot more than helpful

(Updated Rating to 1 star due to Lies told see my other recent reviews) I feel I have to write another new review for this company. Most of us do not appreciate how busy these companies are with the airlines not only canceling bookings due to Covid changes but also canceling flights because they are not full. Smart Travel Deals have been there for me each time, My most recent experience was after i was unable to get a reply to one of my messages (only because they were snowed under with recent airline cancellations) I resent my message and sure enough it got picked up. Not only did they come back to me via phone via my contact details within an hour of me re sending my message but assisted me so quickly and easily it was yet again a pleasure to deal with them. I have further bookings with them for 2021, and they may need to be changed now, so i am confident they will deal with this as well as all others i have had to rearrange. No star at all, booked through Sid Johnson, and paid in full, Air Algerie cancelled all flights to Jhb, and then booked through Egypt Air and was told to pay £80 on top of the £530 I had paid for new flight! Today he calls me telling me I only paid £80 for my return flight to South Africa, I went into panic mode, thought I'm dreaming and told him to be professional and look at his records! No thank you, will never book through you guys ever. Rubbish

My dream is now a reality

I have used this company twice before and have received excellent service at a price I can afford. I have recently booked tickets to South Africa in May and have been able to pay off the tickets over a three month period after paying an initial low deposit. Not at all. When embassies are closed, the embassies of other countries lend help. Usually they are assigned around closure time. Perhaps even the Canadian Embassy would be assigned, along with others.

And remember, even though it might not be obvious, you can always go to an appropriate Russian Ministry for help. I've been up through many Russian departments over the years (mostly just going along on family members' business), and I've always seen fine efficiency. It might require a little legwork on your part, but that can be enjoyable too in Russia.

Relax, and enjoy your trip.

To put the record straight, the British Embassy is not to close and diplomatic relations will remain. What is to close is the British Consulate in St Petersburg. This was decided as one of the extra steps brought in by the Russians when they named the British diplomats which are to be expelled.

Must admit I am a tad happier that we have booked our entire stay with VIking, our river cruise company, rather than book the land stays independently, which we were considering. Hence we can look to them for advice if needed. I am hoping we can leave our passports in the room/cabin safe and just carry copies with us.

To put the record straight, the British Embassy is not to close and diplomatic relations will remain. What is to close is the British Consulate in St Petersburg.

The Russian consulate in San Francisco was likewise shut and the flag put down.

Yes, I think we in States are down to 3 (from 5...)...and closing Consulates was one of those "we close yours, you close ours" deals...

Yes our news was reporting that we had two consulates in Russia (the other being somewhere I have never heard of), whilst the Russians have only one in the UK. The comparative size of the countries will presumably make that more difficult for British travellers cf. Russian travellers to the UK, but it is the way things go.

We regularly travel to some very unusual destinations, so risks are always taken. Hence not considered a major problem for us.

Regarding this embassy business - can I just point out that as an EU citizen you are legally entitled to approach any other EU embassy in Russia.

For example if there was no UK embassy you would approach the Irish one and they are obliged to help you.

Incidentally I read a book called 2018 War with Russia at the weekend! It scared the hell out of me! Does Russia want to invade the Baltic states? I am sure Muscovite has the answer. (That's a compliment Muscovite :)

I am going to visit Russia to reassure myself this is all hype and hysteria. :)
