Calanques cruises: how to choose the right service

prestataire-mer.jpg

Decided to visit the Calanques on a boat trip? The number of authorised passenger crafts in the Calanques is limited. They can be identified by a sticker and an orange flag .

Note: craft not bearing these identification signs are illegal and passengers can be charged. Choose carefully!

To protect the environment from the impact of maritime traffic, the Calanques National Park has established regulations for motorboat hire.

Only professionals with a green sticker  are authorised to hire out boats. Note: no green sticker means the service is illegal and customers can be charged. Choose carefully!

Special case: hire a boat with a skipper

Boat hire between individuals for use in the Calanques is authorised but subject to strict regulations.

Please be careful - many problems result in this activity each year. We strongly recommend hiring a boat from an authorised professional rather than a private boat owner.

The marine environment of the Calanques National Park is protected. Both private and hire boats are subject to  basic regulations and recommended conduct  to preserve the site and ensure optimal conditions for all.

A sign of quality: the blue flag or Pavillon Bleu

Calanques National Park: Best ways to visit from Marseille, Cassis or La Ciotat

You are currently viewing Calanques National Park: Best ways to visit from Marseille, Cassis or La Ciotat

  • Post category: Marseille / Provence & French Riviera
  • Post author: Nassie Angadi

The Calanques in Provence is one of the most unique and beautiful parts of the French Riviera. And one that is not very well known to foreign tourists.

This rocky and mountainous coastal region runs along the Mediterranean sea between Marseille and Cassis and along the coast of Provence. It is a nature reserve and a popular destination for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Map of Les Calanques from Marseille to Cassis and La Ciotat.

Carved out of limestone, this unique cliffside mountain range is a protected national park that is much beloved by the locals.

More than just a mountain range, the Calanques include an amazing series of little inlets and islands that are surrounded by steep cliffs, rocky hillsides. And when you add in the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean, it is a stunning place to visit if you’re on holiday in the South of France.

Les Calanques

It’s an excellent place to spend a day, either visiting by boat or on foot. So let’s look at the best ways to explore the Calanques, shall we? Allons-y!

3. From La Ciotat

2. from marseille to calanque de sugiton, i. calanques by boat, 1. from marseille.

If you happen to be in France’s oldest city, Marseille , the easiest way to head to the Calanques is to catch a boat leaving from the Vieux Port , right in the heart of the city.

This is a good option if you don’t have a car and cannot get around as quickly. If you are coming off a cruise ship into Marseille, the cruise ship port is about 20 minutes away, and most of the main sights like Le Panier are around the Vieux Port , making it an easy stop.

Vieux Port Marseille

The boats that head to the Calanques used are usually catamarans and depending on the option chosen, make stops at other nearby islands as well like Château d’If and Iles du Frioul .

Some of the boats offer a full day of snorkling in the Calanques with stops at Port Pin beach, one of the top beaches in the area . I highly recommend bringing your swimsuit. You can find out more about Calanques boat cruises from Marseille here.

2. From Cassis

If you want to be like the locals however, you may want to head to the nearby coastal town of Cassis to catch a boat from here.

Calanques National Park: Best ways to visit from Marseille, Cassis or La Ciotat 1

Cassis is a charming little town (avoiding the traffic issues of big city Marseille), and it is this portion of the Calanques that is reputed to be the prettiest.

There are several boats leaving from the Port of Cassis , with options of how many of the main Calanques inlets you want to visit and for how long. Several of the boats from here offer picnic and swimming as well, so you just have to pick. You can find out more about Calanques boat options from Cassis here.

The nearest Calanques that you can visit from the small town of La Ciotat , is the Calanques de Figuerolles. You can hike up to these Calanques or take a boat.

Calanques National Park: Best ways to visit from Marseille, Cassis or La Ciotat 2

There is also the Ile Verte (Green Island) in the area, which is a piece of protected land that is part of the Calanques regional park, which you will definitely need a boat to get to. About 550m offshore, it is about 12 hectares of land of wooded trees and vegetation.

It was previously used as an ancient fortification, and you can still see At the remains of Fort Saint-Pierre and Fort Géry built in the Middle ages, which were strengthened by the Germans and then destroyed during the Allied bombardments of WWII.

There are 3 small beaches on the island as well, to explore and enjoy. Nature trails will lead you between the beaches, so bring shoes that you can walk in.

Regular maritime shuttles and boat cruises are available to take you back and forth from the port of La Ciotat.

II. Hiking into the National Park

The hiking trails in the Calanques National Park are renowned for its spectacular views as far as the eye can see.

While there are many different possible hikes into the Calanques, there are a few that are more heavily frequented than others, due to their beautiful scenic views across the coastline:

calanques near Marseille, Provence

1. From Cassis: Calanques de Cassis to Port Miou, Port Pin and Encre d’En-Vau

From the edge of the town of Cassis, you can follow hiking trails that take you to Port Miou, one of the closest calanques that is 1400m long. The hiking trail GR98-51 actually goes all the way between Cassis and Marseille, although I don’t recommend you go that far (unless you are really keen!)

From Port Miou you can head to Port Pin, which has a beautiful beach to swim in, and then onto En-Vau via a high lookout point of Pointe de la Cacau that is not to be missed.

The hike takes around 2h30 and is relatively easy until Port min and gets harder from Pont Pin to En-vau with a rather steep path to follow. Tour guides are available which you can book here .

The hike to the Calanque de Sugiton starts in a rather odd location, the Luminy University in Marseille. It is just steps away from the Calanques, so you don’t have to worry that you’ve accidentally gotten lost.

Calanques National Park: Best ways to visit from Marseille, Cassis or La Ciotat 3

From Luminy, you can follow a rather flat path marked in blue for about 30 minutes that will take you to the Col de Sugiton.

From here you hike up 1km to the Belvedere de Sugiton for beautiful views of the Calanques regional park, including the Calanque de Morgiou on the other side.

You can then head down to the coves in the Calanques de Sugiton towards the beaches. (Note, the beaches here are often closed due to falling rocks.)

If the beaches are closed, you can follow the path along to a couple of rocky coves from where you have the possibility of going for a swim. The path continues and gets a bit steeper and narrower to go around and take you back to Luminy.

The hike takes about 3 hours and covers a distance of about 4.5 miles (7.5km). It is considered relatively difficult as there are some rather steep portions.

III. Tips for Visiting

If you are planning to visit the Calanques, there are a few tips to keep in mind:

1. Check the park conditions and fire advisories

High winds and the mistral are common weather conditions in the Calanques, and French authorities take the risk of fire very seriously. The Calanques is often closed to visitors when there is a risk of fire due to high winds, so check any advisories the night before.

2. Expect the water to be cold

One thing that always surprises visitors to the Calanques is that the water is often cold, even in the middle of summer. The currents of the Mediterranean bring cooler waters to this part of France, so the water is generally rather “refreshing”.

3. Prepare for extreme heat conditions in the summer and for it to get cooler at night

It gets very hot in the south of France in the summer, anywhere from 90F° (32C°) and above. At the same time, because of its position on the Mediterranean, it can get very cold and windy in the evenings as well. So bring a light jacket, just in case.

4. The hikes are not recommended for children under six.

Officially, the hikes are not recommended for children under 6 years old. There is no one checking at the entrance, but since there are no particular signs saying “easy route” or “hard route”, your child may not appreciate this particular adventure.

Calanques National Park: Best ways to visit from Marseille, Cassis or La Ciotat 4

5. Take enough food and water

It is easy to get lost in the Calanques, since internet and telephone service in the area is not guaranteed. If you are counting on your GPS to guide you, you may struggle to get network in the area.

Be prepared for all occasions and bring plenty of food and water, especially in hot summer conditions.

6. Take proper hiking boots and water shoes

The rocks around the Calanques can be very slippery so good hiking shoes are a must. (I once went with sneakers, and really struggled).

In addition, if you are going to go in the water, I would highly recommend water shoes in most areas, as there are sometimes sharp rocks, pieces of glass and other debris in the water.

7. Go with a guide

When in doubt, go with a guide. If you only have a short amount of time in the area and can’t afford to get lost, a guide is worth the price to make sure you don’t end up with a turn with the French rescue services.

From bike tours from Marseille , rock-climbing tours from La Ciotat , and kayaking tours from Cassis , there is something from everyone. So enjoy!

The Calanques of Marseille

The cliffs of the Calanques are a natural wonder nestled between Marseille and Cassis. This unique and breathtaking scenery is an absolute must-see in Marseille! With pebble and fine sandy beaches, and miniature fjords with turquoise waters, this biodiverse jewel looks just like a postcard! It is the perfect location to sunbathe, explore the seabed, or try yourself at some water sports such as kayaking.

Whether you are planning a hike or merely enjoying the water and nature around you, this magnificent place will fulfill your every desire. Some Calanques are more accessible than others and are better suited for families. Other Calanques which are harder to reach will be perfect for hiking-lovers, and their efforts will be well worth it. This one-of-a-kind location must not be missed when visiting Marseille!

calanques-de-cassisjorengo-30.jpeg

What are the Calanques?

A Calanque is a unique kind of geological formation made of limestone.  They are big rocky coves forming a steep and narrow valley inland and are mostly found around the Mediterranean sea. Here, the Calanques National Park is a protected and highly regulated area, stretching over 20 km from Marseille to Cassis, with 26 Calanques of various sizes (25 in Marseille and 1 in Cassis). Some are easily accessible and others are a lot less, but regardless, the Calanques are an absolute must-see when you visit Marseille!

Extraordinary underwater flora

Fauna and flora are everywhere in the Calanques National Park . We often forget to mention underwater vegetation. However, it is so diverse that it can be compared to an underwater garden with octopuses, anemones, urchins, seabreams, mullets but also pointed-snout wrasses, saddled seabreams, and groupers. The turquoise waters reveal a sandy seabed that stands out against the indigo of the Posidonia, an aquatic flowering plant sheltering many species. The National Park regulations allow limited access for boats and forbid any type of fishing.

Did you know?

Near Cap Morgiou, roughly 37 meters underwater, a unique submarine cave ‘La Grotte Cosquer’ has more than 200 rupestrian paintings (with penguins, seals, buffaloes, horses, men, and hands) as well as carvings. The paintings are more than 25,000 years old. This cave was discovered in 1992 by Henri Cosquer. A replica is open since June 2022 in the ‘Villa Méditerranée’ front of The Mucem.

Which Calanques shall I explore?

Even if they are all different, each Calanque of Marseille is more beautiful than the last. Some of them are harder to access and require more effort but they are well worth it! With crystal-clear waters, sheer cliffs, and fine sandy beaches, there is something for everyone. Whether you decide to hike in the National Park or to stay near the coastline of the ‘Côte Bleue’, you will be amazed by the magnificent landscapes.

Marseille’s Calanques: the essential guide

Just outside Marseille, the Calanques National Park is one of France’s most breathtaking spots. Here’s everything you need to plan a visit

Alexis Steinman

‘Calanques’   in French translates roughly as  ‘rocky inlet’. But the calanques of  Marseille  aren’t just any rocks:  they’re staggeringly beautiful limestone cliffs that spill into turquoise coves, like the Mediterranean’s (much warmer) answer to the Norwegian fjords. A total of 26 make up the Calanques National Park (Parc National des Calanques), a 200-square-mile treasure trove for hikers, boaters, swimmers, and nature lovers.

Sprawling across Marseille and Cassis, Europe ’s largest peri-urban park seduces in all seasons. Every Marseillais has their calanque of choice. Whether you’re craving a killer hike, a cool dip or a charming port to amble around, this handy guide will help you find yours – along with some advice on how to tread lightly to protect the park’s precious flora and fauna.

The ultimate guide to Marseille’s Calanques

The best calanques to visit

The best calanques to visit

Les goudes .

On the southern tip of Marseille, this quaint fishing port is the gateway to the Calanques National Park and a great starting point for easy ambles or epic hikes. Reward your efforts with a bite at  Grand Bar des Goudes  or a drink at nearby bar 20,000 Lieues.

Calanque de Morgiou

This lovely little port is well worth a visit: embark on the 50-minute hike down from Luminy, which is prettier than the fire road from Les Baumettes, and reward yourself with a dip. Or take in the sweeping view from above on a hike to Cap Morgiou, where you’ll also get the chance to check out the prehistoric Cosquer cave paintings at Anse de la Triperie.

Calanque de Sugiton

With its picturesque white cliffs and blindingly blue coves, it’s no surprise that Sugiton is the most popular calanque. It’s best to avoid Sugiton in summer, even if the new   reservation system  is helping to  keep crowds down. To visit,  take the fire road from Luminy to a well-marked trail. The Belvédère viewpoint is very much worth the detour.

Calanque de Sormiou

This snorkelling paradise was home to Jacques Cousteau’s first scuba dives. It’s Marseille’s largest calanque and also boasts a beautiful sandy beach. For hikers, the prettier and fastest route leaves from Les Baumettes. To score a parking spot, book a table at   Le Château   (open April to September) or arrive in the early months of the off-season.

Calanque de Marseilleveyre

An easy 50-minute hike from Callelongue (the last stop on the 20 bus), this idyllic turquoise cove is ideal for swimming and sunbathing. Bring a picnic, or some euros if you want to dine at   Chez Le Belge , a laidback beach shack just steps from the sea.

Port-Miou and Calanque d’En Vau

The skinny port and ancient limestone quarry at Port Miou are just a 20-minute walk from the village of Cassis. An hour more takes you to the soaring cliffs, remote sandy beach and neon-blue waters of En Vau, which have earned it a reputation as one of the most beautiful calanques.

Îles du Frioul

Not technically part of the Calanques National Park, this island archipelago is nevertheless worth a shout: its calanques are the closest to Marseille’s city centre, and the easiest to get to, with boats leaving most days  from the Vieux-Port.  Highlights include the medieval Château d’If prison, the picturesque Saint-Estève beach, and the rocky coves of Pomègues if you want more peace and quiet.

How to get to the Calanques

How to get to the Calanques

Many calanques are accessible by bus.  Take line 19 to Madrague de Montredon for Les Goudes and Croix de Marseilleveyre, line 21 to Luminy for Morgiou and Sugiton, or line 22 to Les Baumettes for Morgiou and Sormiou.

You can drive to Les Goudes throughout the year. Morgiou and Sormiou are open to cars in the off-season, or you can beat their summer parking ban with a restaurant reservation. To reach Cassis from Marseille, the Route de la Gineste’s stunning switchbacks are gorgeous any time of year.

Les Goudes is the gateway of the Calanques, and from April to October, Marseille’s public ferry La Navette  is the best way to beat the summer traffic. For the Îles du Frioul, the year-round Le Bateau express shuttle ferries passengers daily.

By kayak/paddleboard:

Work up a sweat before your swim with a kayak or paddleboard rental. Raskas Kayak offers guided tours for all levels from Les Goudes or Cassis. Rent a paddle board from 1,2,3, Kayak to spend a day exploring Les Goudes, Marseilleveyre or Frioul.

A perfect day in the Calanques

A perfect day in the Calanques

There’s no better start than a sunrise in the Calanques. A short walk east of Les Goudes, the graffiti-splashed Blockhaus des Goudes – a German WWII bunker – is a perfect perch to watch the sky light up in orange and pink. Grab a café at the century-old Grand Bar des Goudes or breakfast at Feel Goudes.

Head towards the tiny Callelongue port to follow the coastal GR 98 trail for three hours to Sormiou. Replenish with grilled fish on Le Château ’s terrasse. Take a post-lunch nap on the sandy beach or a dip in the turquoise cove.

Reserve a private skipper via Click n’ Boat to pick you up for an afternoon sail. Ask to drop anchor at the blindingly blue Île Riou coves.

Back in Les Goudes, kick back with a beer at 20,000 Lieues . If it’s a full moon, the lune illuminates an easy amble to Marseilleveyre – ideal for a moonlight swim on sultry summer nights.

Where to hike in the Calanques

Where to hike in the Calanques

Most people begin their hikes in Calanques National Park at Luminy, Les Baumettes, Les Goudes, or Madrague de Montredon (all accessible by bus.) There are hundreds of different trails to amble, ranging from easy to difficult. Here are some of the best.

Hiking to the Croix de Marseilleveyre

For panoramic views from a 433-metre-peak, clamber up to Croix de Marseilleveyre (the name roughly translates to ‘ see Marseille’ ). Whether departing from Montredon or Pastré, the jaw-dropping scenery and steep sections will make your heart race. Set aside around three hours for a round trip.

Hiking to the Calanque de Morgiou

Forget the picnic and pair your hike with a tasty sit-down meal. From Luminy, descend 50 minutes to Bar Nautic for fresh fish alongside the picturesque port at  Calanque de Morgiou . Return back via Les Baumettes to Chez Ze to fill up on wood-fired pizza and Provençal fare. FYI, it’s cash only at this secluded spot.

Hiking the Calanques de Cassis

You can visit all three of Cassis’s calanques on one moderate hike. From the village, take the aptly named Avenue des Calanques to the slender Port-Miou . Follow the red & white GR 98-51 markers along the sea to Port Pin . A steep descent gives way to a flatter path to En Vau , the crown jewel of Cassis’ coves. The hike takes roughly an hour and fifteen minutes each way from Port-Miou.

Local tips for hiking the Calanques

Local tips for hiking the Calanques

There are a few things you should know before setting out for your Calanques adventure. Here goes…

Check in advance for trail closures

If you’re visiting from June 1 to September 30, check the national park’s website . Trails can be closed for fire risk if it’s too hot or the mistral wind is blowing. Many trails are exposed, so avoid hiking around midday in the summer, and be sure to bring lots of water and snacks.

Dress appropriately

Trails meander through cool shade and blazing sun and you never know when it might get windy, so layers are a good idea. Though a sturdy pair of sneakers will suffice, you might want to think about hiking boots and poles for the tougher trails. And even if you’re headed down to the beaches, it’s best to avoid flip-flops, since the limestone rocks can be quite slippery.

Look out for waymarkers

The trails are marked by coloured swatches painted on rocks. They can be confusing to spot at times – don’t hesitate to ask a local for help. Or pick up an IGN Les Calanques map to get a great lay of the land.

Boat trips in the Calanques

Boat trips in the Calanques

A boat trip is ideal for visiting multiple calanques in a day, and a must to truly experience the natural splendour of the Calanques National Park. If you want to swim, snorkel, and sunbathe, Bleu Evasion has 8-to-12 person motorboats or a 24-person catamaran for intimate outings. If sightseeing is your thing, plump for the much larger ( 150 to 250 passengers) and less expensive  Compagnies Maritimes tours.

Splurge on brunch and sunset cruises on a Levantin catamaran – or rent a budget-friendly boat to yourselves on Click n’ Boat . The closest Marseille ports to the Calanques are Pointe-Rouge and Les Goudes. Check that your skipper has a green pass for park access, a new system to protect this fragile maritime reserve.

Got your sea legs on? Check out more of the best boat trips from Marseille .

Where to stay in the Calanques

Where to stay in the Calanques

FYI, camping isn’t allowed in the Calanques National Park. But you can b ook a stay amidst the Calanques to disconnect from the city bustle and truly connect to its natural splendour.

In a 1902 Creole-style house, the charming chambre d’hôte  La Petite Calanque  is a garden oasis just a few steps from the Calanque de Samena beach. For a more sumptuous stay, check out the nineteen th -century Château Beaupin ,  a shabby-chic hôtel particular  in Pointe-Rouge  with a pool and restaurant.

If you’re after a secluded retreat, Les Volets Rouges is tucked away in the remote hills above Cassis. Hike directly to the Calanque d’En Vau from this small, eco-friendly hotel. Or you can rent a cabanon (a traditional beach cabin) from a local in Les Goudes for a taste of village life at the foot of the Calanques.

How to visit responsibly

How to visit responsibly

Since the Calanques National Park was established in 2012, it has skyrocketed in popularity. The park now welcomes over 2 million visitors annually. When combined with the city’s increased pollution and fire risk, this makes the park’s incredible biodiversity more fragile than ever.

To travel responsibly, try to avoid the crowded calanques (like Sugiton and Sormiou) in the summer. Stay on marked trails, don’t pick plants, and be sure to pick up your trash (that includes cigarette butts). And if you’re thinking of visiting by sea, kayaks and paddleboards offer a less intrusive way to explore the coves than travelling by boat.
