We'd love to have you on campus

The 1,000-acre LMU main campus - its grounds, its buildings, its equipment, its human resources – is one of the most strikingly beautiful and functional campuses in the country. In a rural setting just 55 miles north of Knoxville, the campus is a visual treat located adjacent to the Cumberland Gap in Harrogate, Tennessee.

Loyola Marymount University Newsroom

Students Honored With Annual Academic, Service, and Leadership Awards

April 23, 2024

campus tour lmu

A crowd of over 275 students, staff, faculty, family members, and supporters gathered on Friday, April 19, in Sacred Heart Chapel to celebrate more than 100 student award recipients during the 2024 Student Academic, Service, and Leadership Awards ceremony. 190 awards were presented to individual students and registered student organizations, ranging from first-year students to graduating seniors, as well as graduate students who have demonstrated exceptional academic excellence and leadership. These students embody the ideals of Jesuit and Marymount heritages. The event livestream can be viewed here .

“You have demonstrated your commitment to interdisciplinary discourse by presenting your work in spaces such as the Undergraduate Research Symposium, the Engineering Design Showcase, or the Young Contemporaries Juried Exhibition,” said President Timothy Law Snyder, Ph.D. “Others of you have embraced the role of global citizen in both scholarship and service, whether through study abroad or one of our international immersion programs from Alternative Breaks to De Colores to Ignacio Companions. Your compassionate, imaginative leadership is felt in campus service organizations, orientation, Greek Life, ASLMU, and other campus programs. I am inspired each year to learn about the ways our seniors have lived in the service of faith and promotion of justice during their time at LMU while maintaining academic excellence and stretching their imaginations to explore and discover what may have seemed, at least at first, unimaginable.”

Class of 2024 seniors and graduate students received the university’s highest honors, including:

Lyza Weisman ’24 received the University Scholar of the Year award, presented to a four-year undergraduate who is determined to have achieved the best overall academic record of the graduating class. Weisman is also the LMU Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts Program Scholar for theological studies and the Bachelor of Science in economics program scholar. She also received the BCLA Erlandson Award, given to a graduating senior for the rigor of their program while obtaining among the highest grade point averages within the college.

Yinka Akinlade ’24 has been selected as the Class of 2024 Valedictorian and will speak at the 112th Undergraduate Commencement Exercises on Saturday, May 4. The Valedictorian achieves a minimum 3.7 grade point average after at least 60 graded semester hours in residence at the university and is selected based on a speech presented to the Valedictorian Selection Committee, comprised of faculty, administrators, and a student representative.

Anabel Lynch ’24 received the James Loughran, S.J. Award for community service, which is presented to a student service leader for their work on and off campus. An Alternative Breaks leader and the vice president of spirituality for EspĂ©rer, Lynch has also served as president of El Espejo, a tutoring and mentoring program that connects LMU students to students at Lennox Middle School. Her leadership has helped to double student participation and strengthen LMU’s relationship with the school leadership. Future generations of Lions will benefit from their participation in these programs because of Lynch’s thoughtful and holistic approach to servant leadership. Lynch also received a McKay Award.

Erin Yang ’24 received the Donald Merrifield, S.J. Award, which is given to the outstanding senior who has contributed to interculturalism on campus and beyond. Yang has served as vice president of LMU’s Filipino student organization, Isang Bansa, and as a programming assistant for Asian Pacific Student Services. She has coordinated various cultural events such as Mic Nights, Pistahan, and Filipino Cultural Night. These events have provided a multicultural setting that has allowed the Asian Pacific Islander Desi American community to celebrate their identities and have been a great way to promote inclusion on campus.

Four students, two undergraduates and two graduate students, received the Arrupe Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Awards, reserved for graduating seniors and graduate students who have shown a record of explicit work with diversity, equity, and inclusion issues. The award is named in honor of Jesuit Superior General Father Pedro Arrupe, S.J., who worked tirelessly to promote justice in the service of faith. The University Intercultural Council selects the awardees, students who demonstrate both robust academic achievement and outstanding DEI academic contributions.

Catherine Channell ’24 is an aspiring physician majoring in biology with a minor in health and human sciences. Through her LMU experiences and prestigious internships, she has explored the medical implications of underrepresentation in her research on kidney disorders, lactose intolerance, and anesthesiology. Channell has also served as a bilingual mentor, tutor, translator, president of LMU’s Honors Program, and director of service and social justice for LMU’s Gryphon Circle Service Organization. Channell also received the Frank R. Seaver College of Science and Engineering award for Mathematics and Science, the Program Scholar for the Bachelor of Science in Biology, a Presidential Citation, and a McKay Award.

Jeremy Valle ’23, graduated from LMU in December with a double major in environmental studies and international relations. As the Attorney General for ASLMU, Jeremy created a wellness fund that provided financial support to low-income students for physical and mental health care and worked to improve cohesion and fairness in student government decision-making. Jeremy thinks about justice from a global perspective, which is evident in his time as an active member of Lion Model United Nations and has served as a volunteer with the NGO Commission on Voluntary Service and Action to outline and understand the progress of the United States toward achieving the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. Valle also received a Presidential Citation.

Brandi Avila is a graduate student who has spent her entire career working to improve student experiences in community colleges. Avila is dean of Student Development and Wellness at Moreno Valley College, and her dissertation for the Educational Leadership for Social Justice program captured the voices of Black community college leaders who chose to work in DEI positions before and after George Floyd’s murder. She continues to uplift her community and has demonstrated a commitment to the hard work required of champions for diversity.

The final Arrupe recipient was Melissa Stevens, a graduate student with an array of experiences at LMU, including serving as a graduate teaching assistant, presenting a conference paper on medieval studies of honeybees and warfare in old English poetry, and receiving recognition from the LMU English Department for her essay on Black women writers of colonial California. Inspired by her experiences growing up in a mixed-race family in New Zealand, Stevens also received a research grant to study indigenous storytelling. Her commitment to amplifying the marginalized through her academic and social endeavors is ongoing.

The final awards of the program included the Ignatian, Marian, Magis, and the Robert Graham, S.J. Alumni Awards:

Iliana Chen ’24 received the 2024 Marian Award for exemplifying being a person for and with others through her participation in or leadership of four Alternative Breaks programs at LMU. She spent summers teaching English in Indonesia with the LMU Bali Club. Her dedication to supporting youth carries over to her activities at LMU, as she is a member of the Creare Service Organization and a Youth Program leader at Alma Backyard Farms. Chen’s next endeavor will be to teach English in Uruguay as a Fulbright Scholar. Chen also received the Program Scholar awards for Elementary Education and for Education and Learning Sciences, a Presidential Citation, and the McKay Award.

Megan Mingo ’24 received the Robert Graham, S.J. Alumni Award for her leadership skills informed by Ignatian ideals. Ignatian values such as the “Commit to Service and Justice” pillar have encouraged her to implement programming and plan events that will uplift members of LMU’s Black student population. She has been involved in various roles, including President of Black Student Union, Black Greek Council, and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Tau Kappa Chapter. She also maintained membership and job positions with the Academic Community of Excellence and The Learning Community programs. Mingo also received the BCLA African American Studies Department Award.

Drew Hartz ’24 received the Robert Graham, S.J. Alumni Award, the Ignatian Award, a Presidential Citation, and the Magis Award, a special and distinct honor not awarded yearly. It is reserved for unique contributions to our community and often propelled by singular passion and grit. Hartz made strong connections across the LMU campus community and created engaging programming to invigorate school spirit. On top of balancing his student-leader role and a rigorous academic schedule, Hartz serves as a campus tour guide, introducing prospective students and their families to our campus and sharing what it means to be a Lion. Beyond academic and student leader responsibilities, he has continued to clock overnight shifts as an EMT, prioritizing our students’ health and well-being. Hartz also received the Frank R. Seaver College of Science and Engineering Health and Human Science Department Award earlier in the program.

Other awards presented include the Program Scholars, College and School Scholars, Presidential Citations, the Raymundo McKay R.S.H.M. awards to graduating seniors, Alfred Kilp, S.J. awards for juniors, Renee L. Harrangue, Ph.D. awards for sophomores, Peg Dolan, R.S.H.M. awards for first-year students, Student Life awards, Student EXP and Graduate Student EXP Awards. • Lorelai Bishop Resume
  • (818)220-8726

Lorelai Bishop is an actress, singer, and dancer born and raised in Southern California into a strong lineage of Broadway performers. Lorelai was exposed to the world of theatre at a very young age and began performing principally in shows as a young child in elementary school.

At the age of 9, Lorelai fell in love with ballet. A strong love for dance quickly escalated, leading her to Carousel Dance Company, a nationally ranked competition and performance dance company, where she danced/competed for several years. Finding a deep connection to the emoting of the art form, Lorelai knew that her heart belonged to the arts. Taking the well-supported leap, she landed at LMU studying acting, where she has been offered opportunities to act in many films, as well as onstage, recently in Bare: A Pop Opera, where she got to bring two roles to life as well as assisting with the choreography.

When Lorelai is not on stage or in front of the camera, she enjoys sunsets at the beach and long walks, sometimes even together. Lorelai loves to stay active, keeping up with her dance training as well as teaching young children and choreographing/assistant choreographing in the LA area. She has taught herself guitar, aerial, and is currently getting certified in stage combat. As Lorelai Bishop jumps into the industry, she passes the time by as a tour guide for high schoolers in Europe, using those acting skills every step of the way.

2024-25 University Tuition

April 17, 2024

Dear LMU Students,

Choosing a university is a decision that involves a significant financial investment in your future and an act of faith in the institution's ability to shape the future. LMU understands the trust you have placed in us, and in accordance with our Catholic, Jesuit, and Marymount mission, we seek to offer a unique, life-enriching experience that surpasses your expectations—one that is transformative and steeped in values that resonate with you and your families. Today, I share an update about our finances, an essential ingredient in making the LMU experience possible.

Our Budget as an Expression of Values

Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew said, "A budget is not just a collection of numbers, but an expression of our values and aspirations.” I believe we honor LMU’s values by prioritizing student financial aid and scholarships to make our education more accessible; by investing in the faculty and staff, who make your LMU experience possible; and by ensuring that our campuses, facilities, and services enable you to dream big and seek to accomplish what may initially seem impossible.

LMU is a nonprofit institution, and our revenue is based primarily on student tuition and fees. We also fund initiatives and operations through philanthropy and grants, and through other means such as conferences and events. Our primary expenditures include faculty and staff compensation, student financial aid, and operations. External factors also impact us, especially the persistent inflationary pressures that continue to impact the university’s healthcare costs, contractual obligations, and nearly every other facet of our expenditures. Careful financial stewardship and cost-containment measures have helped us to limit annual tuition increases. For a more complete picture of our budget, I invite you to review our audited financial statements , which we post publicly.

Tuition and Fees

Every dollar of your tuition and fees enables us to deliver on the LMU experience.

  • LMU’s Board of Trustees recently approved the 2024-25 budget and tuition. For the coming academic year, undergraduate tuition will be $60,970, marking an overall rate increase of 5.85%. Housing costs will increase by 5%, aligning with our efforts to enhance residential life. Please note: 90% of our undergraduate students receive some form of financial aid to help cover the cost of attending LMU. Our housing rates remain lower than many off-campus alternatives, which is one way we address housing affordability challenges in a broader Los Angeles regional market that has experienced higher increases.
  • Graduate tuition rates differ by program and will be updated on the LMU Student Accounts website in the summer.
  • We aim to maintain transparency and provide you with comprehensive information for your financial planning. Meal plan rates are available here , and parking rates will be updated here in June.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

By focusing fundraising on increasing our financial aid and scholarship funds, we aim to ensure that our LMU education remains within reach for you and future brightest minds, notwithstanding financial considerations.

  • As of March 2024, LMU has awarded over $159 million in grants and scholarships to students for the 2023-24 academic year, with $121 million allocated to undergraduates.
  • Separately, LMU has disbursed more than $12.7 million in federal and state grants to undergraduates and over $3.9 million in paid work-study awards to enrolled undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Our comprehensive campaign is making great progress toward our fundraising goal of $250M for student support, access, and success initiatives, which includes new and existing scholarships and financial aid. As of March 31, 2024, our campaign has raised more than $120M for scholarships, creating 231 new scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students.

Improving our Campuses, Learning Facilities, and Technology

We continue investing in our campuses and technology to ensure LMU remains the hub of your learning, creativity, and co-curricular activities.

  • Learning Space Upgrades: This summer, roughly 40 learning and event spaces will undergo significant audio/visual technology upgrades, including the creation of four new general-purpose classrooms in University Hall.
  • Innovation in Education: We are proud that LMU has been ranked among the top 60 in the US News and World Report’s “ Most Innovative Schools .” Today, LMU launched an artificial intelligence website with tools, resources, and security best practices for using AI, including information about Microsoft Copilot, a robust, secure, and private generative AI tool we are making available to you.
  • Excellence in the Arts: The Strub Theatre is testament to our thriving arts community. With LMU Theatre Arts ranked No. 2 in the U.S., the recent renovation of Strub demonstrates our commitment to providing an unparalleled arts education.
  • Campus Beautification: Multiple sources rank LMU among the “ Most Beautiful College Campuses ” for good reason. This is the result of the awe-inspiring work of our Facilities Management colleagues, and we continue to invest in our campus (from new residence halls to everyday improvements such as drought-tolerant landscape design and other sustainability and climate change-related improvements) to ensure that LMU remains a visually inspiring environment conducive to learning and growth.

Supporting Our Faculty and Staff

Time and again, my conversations with you speak to your reverence for the high caliber of our faculty, our student development professionals, our campus ministers, and our staff. These persons are essential to your LMU experience because they define your LMU experience. Your successes are directly tied to their expertise, dedication, and guidance. With this in mind, next year’s budget has, as its top priority, the compensation of our full-time and part-time faculty and staff at all levels.

For several years, we have prioritized faculty and staff compensation in our budget. Beginning in 2016, we aligned faculty salaries with the market median, achieving this goal across nearly all our colleges and schools by 2022. With the support of our students, faculty, and staff, we raised the base compensation to at least $21 per hour for our lowest-paid colleagues, which we implemented in April 2023. Last fall, I announced a Multi-Year Compensation Initiative , reflecting our continuing commitment to attracting and retaining the exceptional talent that inspires and collaborates with you. This initiative aims to move full-time and part-time faculty and staff salaries toward the competitive range of the 75th percentile.

Strategic Plan: Inclusion, Innovation, and Impact

Our Strategic Plan is the path envisioned by our community, for our community, demonstrating our commitment to navigating the complexities of our rapidly evolving global society and helping to secure your future.

  • Our budget enables us to advance our plan’s priorities of Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion ; Innovation and Adaptability ; and Extending Our Reach Beyond the Bluff .
  • Initiatives such as "Teaching Toward Justice and Diversity" which weaves DEI principles into the fabric of our curriculum, and the creation of academic programs such as the Doctorate in Business Administration, enhanced support for STEM initiatives, and hiring grant analysts to bolster research opportunities and revenue, all expand our academic offerings and encourage interdisciplinary partnerships, solidifying LMU's stature as an exemplar of higher educational excellence.

Lions, you entrust us with a sacred responsibility, and we take that seriously. Together, we will continue to create a lasting impact on our community and beyond, honoring your sacrifices that make this experience possible. Thank you for being our partners. Thank you for igniting a brighter world.

With gratitude,

Timothy Law Snyder, Ph.D. President

Moscow City Tourism Committee organizes conference for Indian MICE market stakeholders

New Delhi [India], April 24 (ANI): Recognising market demand, the Moscow City Tourism Committee organized a conference for representatives of the Indian MICE industry, to introduce them to the tourism strengths of the Russian capital.

MICE stands for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions, and is a type of tourism in which large groups, usually plan things well in advance.

The event took place on April 19 in Delhi and brought together over 100 participants from MICE agencies of both countries, corporate customers, representatives of the travel industry in Moscow, Aeroflot and the Indian branches of Sberbank.

Business tourism is one of the most promising directions for Moscow.

In 2023, the capital was visited by 3.7 million business tourists – 7 per cent more than in 2022. And India remains one of the leaders among visitors from non-CIS countries in terms of the number of business travellers.

“The Russian capital as a centre of business tourism and corporate events is already an established and a strong brand in the international arena,” commented Anastasia Popova, Deputy General Director for International and Industry Cooperation of Project Office for the Development of Tourism and Hospitality in Moscow.

“Now our task is to demonstrate to our Indian partners all the possibilities of organizing high-value MICE events in Moscow in combination with already proven tourist programs,” said Popova.

At the Shaping MICE Future Conference, industry experts from Russia and India pronounced statements and speeches on the future of MICE events in these two countries, a presentation of the MICE potential of Moscow was showcased, and an analytical report on the state of the outbound MICE market in India was presented to the visitors.

During the panel discussion, participants assessed the current status and interaction peculiarities with the MICE market in India and developed recommendations for the MICE industry in Moscow during the general brainstorming session.

Representatives of the Indian MICE industry participated in B2B negotiations to find new cross-partners in the Moscow business environment and among representatives of the hospitality industry.

Representatives of the MICE industry took part in the event from Moscow.

Among them were DMC (Grand Rus, Academservice, Headed Goose, Satguru Travel, Isba Rus, Hug the Bear, Mellenium Group) as well as representatives of other partners interested in the development of MICE cooperation between Russia and India: Global transfers provider i’way and hotels Edge Seligerskaya and Edge Vinogradovo Moscow by Rotana.

“In 2024, we have witnessed a significant surge (more than quadruple) in the demand for transfers by Russians visiting India, both for business and leisure purposes. Muscovites are leading the trend, with 80 per cent of transfer bookings originating from the capital since the beginning of the year. Additionally, we observe a growing interest from Indian tourism agencies in exploring Russia, resulting in a substantial increase in our collaboration,” commented Dmitriy Saraykin, co-founder of Global Transfer Provider i’way.

The Shaping MICE Future conference allowed the Moscow City Tourism Committee to form a pool of MICE industry representatives in Moscow to prioritize incoming requests for events and clarify India’s requirements for business and corporate events to build mutually effective work. Indian colleagues received up-to-date information about Moscow as a safe and attractive MICE destination and were able to find potential partners among representatives of the MICE industry of the Russian capital and were able to present the MICE market in India.

“The event served as a remarkable platform for fostering meaningful dialogue and collaboration within the tourism industry. The event provided us with invaluable opportunities to engage with key stakeholders from the tourism department, as well as tour operators and service providers. The insights gained during the event underscored the Moscow City Tourism Committee’s keen interest in the Indian outbound market, and we are optimistic about the promising prospects for Moscow as a destination, particularly in the post-pandemic landscape. We firmly believe that with concerted efforts and strategic initiatives, Moscow has the potential to emerge as a top-choice destination for Indian tourists,” said Mudit Mathur, director of Tours Delite India, representing Academ Service – Russia in India.

The conference also assessed the solutions to foreign demand for non-standard venues and elements in MICE programs, such as museums, parks, theaters and others. Holding MICE events at offbeat locations, such as the State Historical Museum, the Moscow Planetarium and Khudozhestvenny Cinema, is becoming popular.

This helps to attract conference organizers and creates a unique experience for the participants. Working in this format, many visitors who come to Moscow on a business trip want to return with their families and spend time as regular tourists. (ANI)
