LOVE up the Elderly Initiative – Harrison’s Cave, Barbados

As part of our outreach programme, the Foundation recently entertained some of the elderly persons from the communities surrounding the Harrison’s Cave.  On February 14th, under the theme ‘Love up the Elderly’, six (6) persons ranging from ages seventy to ninety-one were entertained.  They were transported from and to their respective homes, and treated to a tour of the Cave, refreshments & gift baskets.

Spokesman for the residents Mr. Chesterfield Mayers, said that they were delighted and appreciative for the kind gesture.  He thanked the Foundation for the opportunity to view the facility, and complimented the company on the new developments so far, while wishing Chukka much success in their endeavours.

A special thank you goes out to Tropical Luxury Tours for graciously providing transportation for the residents, as well as the staff members who readily volunteered to assist with this venture.

On June 15th, 2023 Chukka Foundation and Hanover Charities held our official Handover Ceremony at Round Hillte Hotel and Villas for the funds raised at our Annual Polo Event 2023!

With part of the proceeds raised, a grand joint project will be undertaken at the Sandy Bay Basic School to include new classroom equipment, a brand-new school sign and the installation of perimeter fencing for the the grounds this summer. 100% of proceeds benefit the outreach project managed by Chukka Foundation and Hanover Charities

Jamaica Labour Day 2023 Project

It was our pleasure to partner with Carnival Cruise Line and American Friends of Jamaica for our Labour Day 2023 project at the St Ann’s Bay Hospital. The day was spent planting trees with Rada (The Rural Agricultural Development Authority) on the Hospital grounds, painting the Children’s ward, providing gifts of gratitude to their amazing Nurses and Doctors and donating new fans to the ward! We were thrilled to be a part of such an impactful initiative. A big thank you to our Chukka volunteers who assisted for the day.

Breakfast Feeding Program – a visit to the schools

Last week we visited Salt Spring Primary/Basic and Hartfield Basic School along with members of the St James Police Divison to assist with serving meals to students and to check in with Principals on progress of our ongoing Breakfast feeding program.

We were thrilled to see that the program continues to bear fruit, making an impact not only for the schools, but the surrounding communities.

High attendance rates which keeps children in schools, increased enthusiasm from both parents and teachers, and key steps towards reparation of police-citizen relations.

A big THANK YOU to our partners for 2022-23, the St James Police Division, Gore Family Foundation, Margaritaville Jamaica, Barnett Limited and Matmar Investments Limited to name a few, who see the vision and purpose behind this initiative, and continue to help us to keep it going!

How to visit Russia’s most remote region of Chukotka

"See you in Chukotka!"

A marvelous world of Arctic cold, Northern Lights and endless tundra - that’s how this faraway land can be described. In fact, Chukotka is the real edge of not only Russia, but also of the entire Eurasian continent. The 180th Meridian stretches through there, which separates the Western and Eastern hemispheres and serves as a reference point for the date line - that divides time into “yesterday” and “today”. The maritime border between Russia and the U.S. (the distance between the islands of Diomede, one of which is Russian and the other is American, is only 4 kilometers) can also be found there.

People go there to see the amazing and almost untamed nature, where brown and polar bears wander, to watch walruses (although it’s still a question of who is watching who) and even play snowballs in the summer (because permafrost!). And also - to challenge oneself and to reach the furthest point of Eurasia, Cape Dezhnev. We have already written about the top places in the region , so now let’s look in detail at how to get there.  

Who lives in Chukotka

At the nomadic family place in the tundra.

This is a large (think several European countries!) and the most sparsely populated region of Russia, with only 50,000 people, half of whom are Russians, a quarter who are Chukchi indigenous people and another quarter who are other ethnic peoples, including the minorities. Nomadic peoples in the tundra are mostly engaged in reindeer herding and the indigenous dwellers of the coastline are mostly sea hunters. 

People of Anadyr.

Central Chukotka is the city of Anadyr, the capital of the region. This is the most expensive city in Russia (we cover it in the following articles), but it also is the brightest. All the houses there are painted in cheerful colors to balance the lack of vegetation for the eyes. In the outskirts of Anadyr, tourists climb the hills, as well exploring the Anadyr estuary by boat.

The western part includes the cities of Bilibino (where the world’s only Nuclear Power Plant on permafrost sits) and Pevek (the northernmost city in Russia), Lake Elgygytgyn  and Wrangel Island (also nicknamed the ‘Island of Bears’). 

A boat trip in Chukotka is like...

Eastern Chukotka is the most interesting part of the region, where you can see walruses, whales and orcas in the wild, as well as visit the indigenous peoples. You can also make a journey to Cape Dezhnev and see the point where the Arctic and Pacific Oceans meet. 

Not only a Russian visa is needed

Helicopter is a local transport in this remote area.

Usually, a foreigner can organize a trip to Russia yourself: get a visa, book a hotel, buy flight tickets and local transport. But, Chukotka is the case when you have to contact local tour companies and travel in a group. Even if you know Russian very well. Good news - it ends up being cheaper and safer than trying to organize a trip on your own.

Besides a Russian visa, you will need permission from the regional FSB office, as Chukotka Autonomous Okrug (Area) is a so-called territory with a regulated visitation regime. In a tourist group, permission will be managed by the travel agency (read more here ).

No roads? It's not a problem here.

But, even if you can make a permit on your own, you will face another problem. Getting from one locality to another is sometimes only possible by plane, helicopter or ATV. Travel agencies can book charter flights for the group and arrange transfers. And this is not about something extreme - it’s the usual local way of transportation.  

Also, for safety reasons, it’s better to travel in a group: wild animals, harsh and rapidly changing weather, with no cell phone service outside the settlements. 

How to get to Chukotka?

There are three cities in Chukotka that connect this region with the rest of the world. Most journeys start from Anadyr. The airport is in the settlement of Ugolnie Kopi on the other side of the estuary, which can be reached by ferry or by helicopter, depending on the season. Planes arrive there from Moscow (8-9 hours), Irkutsk (5-6 hours), Novosibirsk (6-7 hours), Vladivostok (5-6 hours), Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (5 hours), Yakutsk (5-6 hours) and Khabarovsk (4-5 hours). The second city is Pevek. You can fly here from Magadan (5 hours) and Yakutsk (6 hours). The third city is Bilibino, where you can fly only from Magadan (3 hours). 

There are also airports in large (relatively) villages: Egvekinot, Lavrentiya, Provideniya, Mys Shmidta  ( Cape Schmidt), where local Chukotavia airlines operate.

There are no railways, due to swampy soils and permafrost. And there are almost no automobile routes, they are mainly dirt roads and only in some settlements they are made of concrete, as no asphalt can stand this climate. In winter, people use “ice roads”. 

Remember that, in Chukotka, the weather decides everything: as a rule, winter lasts about nine months, while, from June to August, there’s something like a windy summer with bright sun. Because of the topography, the weather can be different even over a short distance, so be prepared!

Most Beautiful Metro Stations in Moscow

Visiting Moscow? Get yourself a metro card and explore Moscow’s beautiful metro stations. Moscow’s world-famous metro system is efficient and a great way to get from A to B. But there is more to it; Soviet mosaic decorations, exuberant halls with chandeliers, colourful paintings and immense statues. Moscow’s metro is an attraction itself, so take half a day and dive into Moscow’s underground!

The best thing to do is to get on the brown circle (number 5) line since the most beautiful metro stations are situated on this line. The only exception is the metro stop Mayakovskaya one the green line (number 2). My suggestion is to get a map, mark these metro stops on there and hop on the metro. It helps to get an English > Russian map to better understand the names of the stops. At some of the metro stops, the microphone voice speaks Russian and English so it’s not difficult at all.

Another thing we found out, is that it’s worth taking the escalator and explore the other corridors to discover how beautiful the full station is.

These are my favourite metro stations in Moscow, in order of my personal preference:

1. Mayakovskaya Station

The metro station of Mayakovskaya looks like a ballroom! Wide arches, huge domes with lamps and mosaic works make your exit of the metro overwhelming. Look up and you will see the many colourful mosaics with typical Soviet pictures. Mayakovskaya is my personal favourite and is the only stop not on the brown line but on the green line.

2. Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya metro station is famous for its yellow ceiling. An average museum is nothing compared to this stop. Splendour all over the place, black and gold, mosaic – again – and enormous chandeliers that made my lamp at home look like a toy.

3. Novoslobodskaya Station

The pillars in the main hall of Novoslobodskaya metro station have the most colourful stained glass decorations. The golden arches and the golden mosaic with a naked lady holding a baby in front of the Soviet hammer and sickle, make the drama complete.

4. Prospect Mira Station

The beautiful chandeliers and the lines in the ceiling, make Prospekt Mira an architectural masterpiece.

5. Belorusskaya Station

Prestigious arches, octagonal shapes of Socialistic Soviet Republic mosaics. The eyecatcher of Belorusskaya metro station, however, is the enormous statue of three men with long coats, holding guns and a flag.

6. Kiyevskaya Station

The metro station of Kiyevskaya is a bit more romantic than Belorusskaya and Prospect Mira. Beautiful paintings with classical decorations.

7. Taganskaya Station

At the main hall Taganskaya metro station you will find triangle light blue and white decorations that are an ode to various Russians that – I assume – are important for Russian history and victory. There is no need to explore others halls of Taganskaya, this is it.

8. Paveletskaya Station

Another and most definitely the less beautiful outrageous huge golden mosaic covers one of the walls of Paveletskaya. I would recommend taking the escalator to the exit upstairs to admire the turquoise dome and a painting of the St Basil’s Cathedral in a wooden frame.

Travelling with Moscow’s metro is inexpensive. You can have a lot of joy for just a few Rubbles.

It’s absolutely beautiful! Moscow is a great city trip destination and really surprised me in many ways.

My partner and I did a self guided Moscow Metro tour when we were there 2 years ago. So many breathtaking platforms…I highly recommend it! Most of my favorites were along the Brown 5 line, as well. I also loved Mayakovskaya, Arbatskaya, Aleksandrovski Sad and Ploshchad Revolyutsii. We’re heading back in a few weeks and plan to do Metro Tour-Part 2. We hope to see the #5 stations we missed before, as well as explore some of the Dark Blue #3 (Park Pobedy and Slavyansky Bul’var, for sure), Yellow #8 and Olive #10 platforms.
