Tensions on the Korean Peninsula

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula could escalate with little notice and the security situation could deteriorate suddenly. Tensions may increase before, during and after North Korean nuclear and missile tests, military exercises or as the result of incidents or military activities at or near the inter-Korean border.

Monitor developments, remain vigilant and follow the instructions of local authorities. We strongly recommend that Canadians register with the Registration of Canadians Abroad service to receive the latest updates.

Registration of Canadians Abroad

Crime against foreigners is generally low. Petty crime occurs in major metropolitan areas, tourist sites and public markets. Remain aware of your surroundings in crowded entertainment, nightlife and shopping districts.

Petty crime and sexual harassment can occur in public spaces including bars and restaurants, and on buses.

  • Avoid walking alone, especially after dark.
  • Ensure that your personal belongings, including your passport and other travel documents, are secure at all times.

You can report crimes, including a sexual assault, to the Korean National Police Agency by dialling 112. This is a 24-hour, 7-day-a-week service. For non-Korean speakers, the police will link an interpreter into the call.

Women’s safety

Women travelling alone may be subject to certain forms of harassment. Sexual assault and harassment do occur, particularly around bars and nightlife areas, such as Itaewon and Hongdae-Ipgu.

Local authorities may not always respond adequately to reports of sexual violence and harassment. If you are sexually assaulted, you should report it immediately to local authorities and to the nearest Canadian government office.

  • Avoid travelling alone, especially at night
  • Remain vigilant
  • Be careful when dealing with strangers or recent acquaintances

Advice for women travellers

Demonstrations

Political, labour and student demonstrations and marches may occur. Even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent at any time. They can lead to significant disruptions to traffic and public transportation.

  • Avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities
  • Monitor local media for information on ongoing demonstrations

Mass gatherings (large-scale events)

Civil emergency exercises

Civil emergency exercises are held for fires, earthquakes, other disasters and civil defence drills by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.

In 2024, four exercises will take place in March, May, August and October. The exercise on August 21, 2024, will be a nationwide exercise. Depending on the exercise, sirens may sound, transport may stop and authorities may ask some people to take shelter in metro stations or basements. While visitor participation is not necessary, familiarize yourself with procedures and check local announcements for further exercises.

Road safety

The rate of fatal road accidents is very high. Check carefully before crossing the road. Vehicles may not stop at pedestrian crossings. Use underground or above-ground pedestrian crossings, where available.

Speeding, running red lights, lane changes without signalling and other risky driving behaviours are common, particularly by buses, taxis and motorcyclists. Motorcycles are sometimes driven on sidewalks.

Automobile drivers are presumed to be at fault in accidents involving motorcycles or pedestrians. Criminal charges and heavy penalties are common when accidents result in injury. Even if negligence is not proven, you may be subject to criminal charges.

Public transportation

The use of public transport after dark may be safer than using taxis when travelling alone. When subway and bus services end for the night, use officially marked taxis only. It is mandatory to fasten your seatbelt in a taxi. Drivers may speak some English, but have your destination written in Korean.

High-speed train services (KTX and SRT) link Seoul and major southern cities such as Busan, Gwangju and Mokpo.

Relevant Travel Health Notices

  • Global Measles Notice - 13 March, 2024
  • COVID-19 and International Travel - 13 March, 2024

This section contains information on possible health risks and restrictions regularly found or ongoing in the destination. Follow this advice to lower your risk of becoming ill while travelling. Not all risks are listed below.

Consult a health care professional or visit a travel health clinic preferably 6 weeks before you travel to get personalized health advice and recommendations.

Routine vaccines

Be sure that your  routine vaccinations , as per your province or territory , are up-to-date before travelling, regardless of your destination.

Some of these vaccinations include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, varicella (chickenpox), influenza and others.

Pre-travel vaccines and medications

You may be at risk for preventable diseases while travelling in this destination. Talk to a travel health professional about which medications or vaccines may be right for you, based on your destination and itinerary.

Yellow fever is a disease caused by a flavivirus from the bite of an infected mosquito.

Travellers get vaccinated either because it is required to enter a country or because it is recommended for their protection.

  • There is no risk of yellow fever in this country.

Country Entry Requirement*

  • Proof of vaccination is not required to enter this country.

Recommendation

  • Vaccination is not recommended.

* It is important to note that country entry requirements may not reflect your risk of yellow fever at your destination. It is recommended that you contact the nearest diplomatic or consular office of the destination(s) you will be visiting to verify any additional entry requirements.

About Yellow Fever

Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres in Canada

There is a risk of hepatitis A in this destination. It is a disease of the liver. People can get hepatitis A if they ingest contaminated food or water, eat foods prepared by an infectious person, or if they have close physical contact (such as oral-anal sex) with an infectious person, although casual contact among people does not spread the virus.

Practise  safe food and water precautions and wash your hands often. Vaccination is recommended for all travellers to areas where hepatitis A is present.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a risk in some areas of this destination. It is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). It is spread to humans by the bite of infected ticks or occasionally when unpasteurized milk products are consumed.

Travellers to areas where TBE is found may be at higher risk  during April to November, and the risk is highest for people who hike or camp in forested areas.

Protect yourself from tick bites . The vaccine is not available in Canada. It may be available in the destination you are travelling to.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease. It can spread quickly from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

Anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk of being infected with it when travelling internationally.

Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are fully protected against measles.

Japanese encephalitis is a viral infection that can cause swelling of the brain.  It is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Risk is very low for most travellers. Travellers at relatively higher risk may want to consider vaccination for JE prior to travelling.

Travellers are at higher risk if they will be:

  • travelling long term (e.g. more than 30 days)
  • making multiple trips to endemic areas
  • staying for extended periods in rural areas
  • visiting an area suffering a JE outbreak
  • engaging in activities involving high contact with mosquitos (e.g., entomologists)

Hepatitis B is a risk in every destination. It is a viral liver disease that is easily transmitted from one person to another through exposure to blood and body fluids containing the hepatitis B virus.  Travellers who may be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids (e.g., through sexual contact, medical treatment, sharing needles, tattooing, acupuncture or occupational exposure) are at higher risk of getting hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all travellers. Prevent hepatitis B infection by practicing safe sex, only using new and sterile drug equipment, and only getting tattoos and piercings in settings that follow public health regulations and standards.

The best way to protect yourself from seasonal influenza (flu) is to get vaccinated every year. Get the flu shot at least 2 weeks before travelling.

 The flu occurs worldwide.

  •  In the Northern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs from November to   April.
  •  In the Southern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs between April and   October.
  •  In the tropics, there is flu activity year round.

The flu vaccine available in one hemisphere may only offer partial protection against the flu in the other hemisphere.

The flu virus spreads from person to person when they cough or sneeze or by touching objects and surfaces that have been contaminated with the virus. Clean your hands often and wear a mask if you have a fever or respiratory symptoms.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious viral disease. It can spread from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

It is recommended that all eligible travellers complete a COVID-19 vaccine series along with any additional recommended doses in Canada before travelling. Evidence shows that vaccines are very effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19. While vaccination provides better protection against serious illness, you may still be at risk of infection from the virus that causes COVID-19. Anyone who has not completed a vaccine series is at increased risk of being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 and is at greater risk for severe disease when travelling internationally.

Before travelling, verify your destination’s COVID-19 vaccination entry/exit requirements. Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are adequately protected against COVID-19.

Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease that is caused by parasites spread through the bites of mosquitoes.   Limited malaria transmission may occur in this destination, but risk to travellers is very low.    Antimalarial medication is not recommended for most travellers. Consult a health care professional or visit a travel health clinic before travelling to discuss your options. It is recommended to do this 6 weeks before travel, however, it is still a good idea any time before leaving.    Protect yourself from mosquito bites at all times:

  • Cover your skin and use an approved insect repellent on uncovered skin.
  • Exclude mosquitoes from your living area with screening and/or closed, well-sealed doors and windows.
  • Use insecticide-treated bed nets if mosquitoes cannot be excluded from your living area.
  • Wear permethrin-treated clothing.

If you develop symptoms similar to malaria when you are travelling or up to a year after you return home, see a health care professional immediately. Tell them where you have been travelling or living.

In this destination, rabies  may be present in some wildlife species, including bats. Rabies is a deadly disease that spreads to humans primarily through bites or scratches from an infected animal.

If you are bitten or scratched by an animal while travelling, immediately wash the wound with soap and clean water and see a health care professional.

Before travel, discuss rabies vaccination with a health care professional. It may be recommended for travellers who will be working directly with wildlife.

Safe food and water precautions

Many illnesses can be caused by eating food or drinking beverages contaminated by bacteria, parasites, toxins, or viruses, or by swimming or bathing in contaminated water.

  • Learn more about food and water precautions to take to avoid getting sick by visiting our eat and drink safely abroad page. Remember: Boil it, cook it, peel it, or leave it!
  • Avoid getting water into your eyes, mouth or nose when swimming or participating in activities in freshwater (streams, canals, lakes), particularly after flooding or heavy rain. Water may look clean but could still be polluted or contaminated.
  • Avoid inhaling or swallowing water while bathing, showering, or swimming in pools or hot tubs.

Typhoid   is a bacterial infection spread by contaminated food or water. Risk is higher among children, travellers going to rural areas, travellers visiting friends and relatives or those travelling for a long period of time.

Travellers visiting regions with a risk of typhoid, especially those exposed to places with poor sanitation, should speak to a health care professional about vaccination.

Insect bite prevention

Many diseases are spread by the bites of infected insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas or flies. When travelling to areas where infected insects may be present:

  • Use insect repellent (bug spray) on exposed skin
  • Cover up with light-coloured, loose clothes made of tightly woven materials such as nylon or polyester
  • Minimize exposure to insects
  • Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in buildings that are not fully enclosed

To learn more about how you can reduce your risk of infection and disease caused by bites, both at home and abroad, visit our insect bite prevention page.

Find out what types of insects are present where you’re travelling, when they’re most active, and the symptoms of the diseases they spread.

There is a risk of chikungunya in this country.  The risk may vary between regions of a country.  Chikungunya is a virus spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Chikungunya can cause a viral disease that typically causes fever and pain in the joints. In some cases, the joint pain can be severe and last for months or years.

Protect yourself from mosquito bites at all times. There is no vaccine available for chikungunya.

Animal precautions

Some infections, such as rabies and influenza, can be shared between humans and animals. Certain types of activities may increase your chance of contact with animals, such as travelling in rural or forested areas, camping, hiking, and visiting wet markets (places where live animals are slaughtered and sold) or caves.

Travellers are cautioned to avoid contact with animals, including dogs, livestock (pigs, cows), monkeys, snakes, rodents, birds, and bats, and to avoid eating undercooked wild game.

Closely supervise children, as they are more likely to come in contact with animals.

Person-to-person infections

Stay home if you’re sick and practise proper cough and sneeze etiquette , which includes coughing or sneezing into a tissue or the bend of your arm, not your hand. Reduce your risk of colds, the flu and other illnesses by:

  •   washing your hands often
  • avoiding or limiting the amount of time spent in closed spaces, crowded places, or at large-scale events (concerts, sporting events, rallies)
  • avoiding close physical contact with people who may be showing symptoms of illness

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) , HIV , and mpox are spread through blood and bodily fluids; use condoms, practise safe sex, and limit your number of sexual partners. Check with your local public health authority pre-travel to determine your eligibility for mpox vaccine.

Tuberculosis is an infection caused by bacteria and usually affects the lungs.

For most travellers the risk of tuberculosis is low.

Travellers who may be at high risk while travelling in regions with risk of tuberculosis should discuss pre- and post-travel options with a health care professional.

High-risk travellers include those visiting or working in prisons, refugee camps, homeless shelters, or hospitals, or travellers visiting friends and relatives.

Medical services and facilities

Medical services and facilities meet Canadian standards. Private hospitals and clinics located in cities are often better staffed and equipped than public or rural facilities. Payment is expected at time of service. Korean medical institutions will not charge insurance companies directly.

Make sure you get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation and hospital stays.

Travel health and safety

Keep in Mind...

The decision to travel is the sole responsibility of the traveller. The traveller is also responsible for his or her own personal safety.

Be prepared. Do not expect medical services to be the same as in Canada. Pack a   travel health kit , especially if you will be travelling away from major city centres.

You must abide by local laws.

Learn about what you should do and how we can help if you are arrested or detained abroad .

Police may confiscate your passport and/or detain you during an investigation.

Teaching English

Carefully review any contract to teach English in South Korea before signing it, even when arranged by a Canadian recruiter. There have been reports that some contracts have been modified after the fact. Ensure that all terms and conditions of employment are clear before accepting an offer. Ensure that you meet all the necessary requirements.

The Korean government investigates the use of fraudulent documents, degrees and English-as-a-second-language (ESL) certificates. Penalties for using fraudulent documents include arrest, deportation and restrictions on re-entry. Be aware that written contracts may not be binding documents. Verbal agreements often take precedence over written agreements.

Dual citizenship

South Korea legally recognizes dual citizenship. If you’re a citizen of Canada, but also a citizen of South Korea, our ability to offer you consular services may be limited while you’re there. You may also be subject to different entry/exit requirements.

The South Korean government considers children born from a Korean and a non-Korean parent to be South Korean citizens until age 18, even if they weren’t born in South Korea. Former Koreans over 65 who wish to live their remaining years in South Korea may be granted citizenship.

A male dual citizen whose name appears on the Korean family relation certificate may be subject to compulsory military service, even when entering South Korea on a Canadian passport. Before travelling to South Korea, Canadian males of Korean origin may need to renounce their Korean citizenship or have their names removed from the Korean family relation certificate to avoid this requirement.

Korean authorities will only recognize you as a Canadian-South Korean citizen if you meet certain criteria. If you think you may have a claim to South Korean citizenship, contact the Embassy of the Republic of Korea or one of its consulates.

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and South Korea.

If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in South Korea, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the South Korean court.

If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in South Korea to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children’s Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies.

2SLGBTQI+ travellers should carefully consider the risks of travelling to South Korea.

The currency in South Korea is the won (KRW). Some major banks have ATMs that accept international debit or credit cards. The amount allowed per withdrawal may be quite low, making the service charge excessive. Most ATMs that allow withdrawal of money from Canadian bank accounts offer English instructions.

Rainy and typhoon seasons

The rainy season extends from late June until August. July is usually the wettest month. Severe rainstorms can cause flooding and landslides.

Typhoons occur in August and September. These severe storms can cause significant loss of life and extensive damage to infrastructure. They can hamper the provision of essential services.

If you decide to travel to South Korea during the rainy or typhoon seasons:

  • know that you expose yourself to serious safety risks
  • be prepared to change your travel plans on short notice, including cutting short or cancelling your trip
  • stay informed of the latest regional weather forecasts
  • carry emergency contact information for your airline or tour operator
  • follow the advice and instructions of local authorities
  • Korea Meteorological Administration
  • Tornadoes, cyclones, hurricanes, typhoons and monsoons
  • Large-scale emergencies abroad

Air pollution

Air pollution, including yellow dust pollution, is common in South Korea throughout the year and especially in March, April and May.

Air pollution in South Korea - World Air Quality Index

Wildfires are common in the spring months, but are generally contained within inaccessible areas. The air quality in areas near active fires may deteriorate due to heavy smoke. In case of a major fire:

  • stay away from the affected area, particularly if you suffer from respiratory ailments
  • follow the instructions of local emergency services personnel
  • monitor local media for up-to-date information on the situation
  • National Fire Agency  - Korean Ministry of the Interior and Safety

Visiting South Korea lets you take in the country’s cutting-edge cities and beautiful natural attractions © Joel Carillet / Getty Images

Not many countries have the sights-to-size ratio of South Korea . You can get from one corner of the country to the other in just two and a half hours, and in between you’ll find mountain trails leading to Buddhist hermitages, super-spectacle K-Pop concerts, back-alley pubs serving craft rice wines, enchanting bamboo forests and much more.

Getting the most out of a visit here starts with getting your entry requirements in order, a simple enough process for most travelers. Here are the basics on who needs a visa to South Korea and how to apply.

Who can travel to South Korea visa-free?

Many travelers – including those from the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand and most European countries – can visit Korea for up to 90 days with no visa required. Canadians can do so for up to six months, while South Africans get 30 days. To check the most up-to-date requirements for your country, visit the Korean government’s Visa Portal and enter your information in its  Visa Navigator .

Although you might not need a visa, you will need to apply for a Korea Electronic Travel Authorization (₩10,000) on the  K-ETA website or K-ETA app (for  iOS  and  Android ) at least 72 hours before your departure. Once you’ve applied, you should receive your results via email within 24 hours. Your K-ETA will remain valid for two years from the date your application is approved, meaning you don’t have to reapply if you visit multiple times within that window.

Who needs a tourist visa for South Korea?

Citizens of countries that don’t have a visa-waiver agreement with South Korea or that Korea doesn’t grant visa-free entry will need a visa, which is typically for a single entry and permits stays of 90 days.

If you do need a visa, after entering your information in the Visa Navigator , select the visa you’re applying for (most likely Ordinary Tourist, or C-3-9) and then find the eligibility criteria that applies to you (most likely “travel for holidays or leisure”). Complete your application online ( e-Form ) or by hand ( downloadable PDF ) and then visit a Korean embassy or consulate with your application or a printout of your completed e-Form, your passport, a 3.5cm x 4.5cm (1.4in x 1.7in) passport photo and any additional required documents. The application fee for a basic tourist visa is $40, though it can vary by country.

The Jeju-do visa exception

Jeju-do Island is a designated Special Tourist Zone, which means many (though not all) citizens from countries that require visas for South Korea do not need them to visit Jeju-do for up to 30 days. Note that you must arrive in Jeju-do via ship or direct flight from abroad; you may not connect through another South Korean airport.

Extending your stay in South Korea

In almost all cases, if you’re visiting South Korea as a tourist, you are not allowed to extend your stay. If you need to stay longer because of an emergency, however, contact the Korea Immigration Service. The Hi Korea website provides immigration info for international visitors and residents.

Visas for working and studying in South Korea

Thanks to its all-conquering pop culture and dynamic economy, South Korea is an attractive destination for international students and professionals, and a wide range of visas is available for those wishing to study or work in the country. The first step is determining which visa you need, whether you’re seeking to enroll in a Korean university, teach English or do something else. You can sort through the options and get details on eligibility and requirements at the Visa Navigator  site. Work and study visas generally permit stays of up to two years, with one year being the most common length.

Working holidays in South Korea

South Korea offers one-year working holiday visas to citizens of 25 countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and many European nations. Travelers with a working-holiday visa are permitted to work up to 25 hours per week and can also study the Korean language at private academies and university programs. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Working Holiday Info Center and Working Holiday Guide provide extensive information on who can apply, what the restrictions are, and work, study and housing resources.

Visas for people of Korean descent

If you’re of South Korean descent, you’ll likely have the option of applying for an overseas Korean visa, colloquially referred to as a gyopo visa. These are available to individuals who were born in Korea but have acquired another country’s citizenship or whose parent or grandparent was a Korean citizen. These visas allow initial stays of up to two years and provide a lot of flexibility in terms of what you can do for work or study.

TORONTO — Canada has been added to Korea’s visa-free entry list, effective April 1, 2022.

Canadians entering Korea visa-free will still need to complete a K-ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) prior to departure.

In related news, Korea’s 7-day quarantine requirement for overseas arrivals has been waived for travellers who are fully vaccinated.

However Korea will requires PCR test results before arrival (i.e. negative PCR test results taken within 48 hours from the date of departure). There’s also a PCR test requirement on the first day after arrival. The 6th – 7th day test requirement can be satisfied by rapid antigen test results (either self-test or taken at a medical institution).

Based on these new developments, the KTO Canada Office says it will be restarting FAM trips, co-promotions, webinars “and much more in support of your Korea products.”

KTO Canada invites all industry partners to contact its Canada office with any questions in regards to travel to Korea, entry, attractions, support and more, and adds: “We look forward to working with all our valued partners in the near future.”

Understanding South Korea's visa-exemption policy

The visa exemption policy is part of South Korea's broader initiative to encourage tourism, business exchanges, and cultural interaction.

Travelers benefiting from this policy can engage in various activities, including tourism, family visits, and business-related travels, without the need for a visa. However, like most countries with visa-free access, you still need a travel authorization, also known as an ETA, to visit the country .

K-ETA: A step towards simplified travel

For nationals of visa-exempt countries, entering South Korea goes hand-in-hand with the introduction of the Korea Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA) .

An ETA is a basic travel document, different from a visa, to make sure the country is prepared for your arrival. During the registration process, you’ll have to submit your contact and passport details, travel itinerary, accommodation details, and more.

The pre-entry ETA registration process is quick, user-friendly, and can be completed 100% online , making travel preparations even smoother for eligible tourists.

When to apply for a South Korea K-ETA?

You’ll usually receive your ETA within a couple of days after application, and you must apply at least 24 hours before departure.

Just to be sure, we always recommend getting all your travel documents in order at least a week before departure .

Do I need a South Korean ETA when transiting in the country?

No, transit passengers not entering South Korea (staying in the international transit side of the airport) don’t need to have a K-ETA .

If you require a visa for South Korea, the rules for transit may differ. Reach out to your nearest South Korean Embassy or Consulate for more info.

Filipinos can now visit Seoul visa-free – but there’s a catch

VISA-FREE. Filipinos can now see Seoul, South Korea visa-free under certain conditions.

MANILA, Philippines – Revenge travelers, it’s time to start packing!

Fully-vaccinated Filipinos will be able to visit Seoul, South Korea without a visa starting June 1, under certain conditions.

According to a May 31 announcement by the South Korean Embassy in Manila, nationals of four Asian countries including the Philippines may enter South Korea visa-free, as long as they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, book a tour program arranged by one of eight designated travel agencies, and are scheduled to fly in and out via Yangyang International Airport on the same flight as their tour group.

The visa-free entry allows Filipino tourists to travel only in Gangwon Province, where Yangyang Airport is located, and the Seoul Metropolitan Area. Tourists will be allowed to stay for 15 days.

Gangwon Province is located in the northeast of South Korea, and is home to several national parks.

At the same time, South Korea is also resuming visa-free entry to Jeju Island.

From June 1, Filipinos will be able to enter the tourist favorite without a visa, and stay for up to 30 days, provided they fly into the island directly.

The South Korean Embassy in Manila will also begin processing visas, including tourist visas, on June 1.

“The Korean Embassy hopes that the visa-free entry will promote people-to-people exchanges between Korea and the Philippines via tourism,” it said on Facebook. – Rappler.com

How Long You Can Stay: 120 days

Details: Canadian passport holders can visit Fiiji for stays of up to four months, or 120 days, without needing to obtain a visa — instead, Canadians are issued a visitor's permit and border officials will stamp your passport on arrival.

According to the Canadian government, travellers must ensure that their passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond the date you expect to leave Fiji. They will also need a return or onward ticket in order to enter the country.

How Long You Can Stay: 180 days

Details: Want to enjoy island life for a little bit longer? Canadians can stay in Barbados for up to six months, or 180 days, without needing a visa.

While a visa isn't required, travellers will need to have a Canadian passport that is valid for the duration of their stay, as well as a return or onward ticket.

They may also be required to provide proof that they have a place to stay in Barbados, as well as proof of sufficient funds for the duration of the trip.

According to the Government of Canada , travellers must also complete an arrival form upon their arrival at the immigration office.

The government notes that while Canadians are able to visit Barbados for up to six months, it is Barbadian immigration officers who determine the length of your stay, and who will also determine if a work permit is required for business travellers.

United States

Details: Canadian visitors can usually stay in the United States for six months without a visa, according to the Government of Canada .

Canadian travellers are usually granted a stay in the country for up to 180 days at the time of entry.

While they may not need a visa, all Canadians entering the U.S. by air require a passport, and Canadians entering the U.S. by land or sea must have a Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI)-compliant travel document, such as a valid passport, Enhanced Driver’s License, or Trusted Traveler Program card (NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST).

At the border, customs officials may also ask travellers to provide their address while in the U.S., as well as evidence of residential, employment or educational ties to Canada, proof that the trip is for a legitimate purpose and is of a reasonable length, and proof of sufficient funds to cover the traveller's stay.

While most Canadians won't need a visa to enter the U.S., there are some exceptions. For example, Canadian permanent residents may need a non-immigrant visa to enter the United States.

A list of Canadians requiring a visa to enter the U.S. can be found on the U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Canada website.

According to the Government of Canada, travellers who wish to stay longer than six months in the U.S. must apply for an extension at the nearest U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office once in the country and before the expiry of their initial stay.

South Korea

Details: Canadian passport holders can visit South Korea without a visa for stays of up to six months, or 180 days.

Previously, Canadians entering Korea visa-free needed to complete a K-ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) prior to their departure.

According to the Government of Canada, Canadians are currently exempt from the K-ETA requirement to visit South Korea until December 31, 2024.

Canadians are also required to have a passport that is valid beyond the date of their expected departure from South Korea.

Details: Canadian tourists can visit the United Kingdom for a period of up to six months, or 180 days, without a visa required.

They must, however, meet the Standard Visitor eligibility requirements, including that you have a passport or travel document to enter the U.K. and are able to show that you'll leave the U.K. at the end of your visit, you're able to support yourself and your dependants during your trip, you're able to pay for your return or onward journey, and that you'll not live in the U.K. for extended periods through frequent or successive visits, or make the UK your main home.

Canadians can visit the U.K. as a Standard Visitor for the purposes of tourism, like a holiday or vacation, to see family or friends or to volunteer for up to 30 days with a registered charity, among other activities.

According to the U.K. government, you may be asked questions at the U.K. border about your eligibility and the activities you plan to do.

Your Canadian passport must be valid for at least the expected duration of your stay in the United Kingdom. This requirement may also apply when travelling to Northern Ireland from other parts of the U.K. and vice versa, according to the Canadian government .

You can check if you'll be required to obtain a visa to enter the U.K. by filling out the form on the government's website.

According to the Government of Canada , a Costa Rican immigration officer will determine the permitted length of your stay when you enter the country. As a tourist, you may be granted a stay of up to 180 days.

However, if you want to stay for more than 180 days, you must obtain a residency status from the Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería.

Your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay, and customs officials will ask you to show them a return or onward ticket and proof of sufficient funds to cover your stay.

Details: Canadian travellers can visit the Caribbean country of Dominica for up to six months, or 180 days, without a visa.

Called the "Caribbean's best-kept secret," Dominica offers tons of natural beauty, as well as friendly people and a laid-back vibe.

According to the Government of Canada, travellers must be able to present proof of onward travel or a return ticket to enter the country.

They must also have sufficient funds to sustain themselves for the length of their stay, and be able to provide a local address, according to the Government of Dominica .

Their passport must also be valid for the expected duration of their stay in Dominica.

How Long You Can Stay: 240 days

Details: Canadian passport holders can stay in the Bahamas for up to 240 days, or eight months, without a visa, provided that they have certain travel documents.

According to the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, Canadian citizens must have a Canadian passport with an expiry date that is not less than three months after leaving the Bahamas (for direct travel) and not less than six months if transiting through other countries, such as the U.S.

They must also possess a return ticket.

The rules are a bit different for permanent residents of Canada, who may stay in the Bahamas for 30 days without a visa.

For stays of longer than eight months, Canadian passport holders are required to have a visa.

While the rules apply to tourist stays, business and student travel to the Bahamas also does not require a visa, according to the Government of Canada .

For those looking to stay longer in the island country, the Bahamas Extended Access Travel Stay (BEATS) program allows students and professionals to live in the Bahamas for up to a year while they work or study remotely.

38 countries you can travel VISA-FREE with Canada visa [2024 Edition]

Updated: March 23, 2024 230 Comments

Travel Countries VISA-FREE with Canada Visa

I always encourage my readers to get their US visas at some point. Having a US visa will open up many doors. Of course, you can travel to the US, but you can also travel to 53 countries VISA-FREE with US visa .

But, many fear that the US visa is the most difficult to get.

Well, there is an alternative – CANADA VISA.

Canada visa is the second-best visa. You can travel 38 countries VISA-FREE with Canada visa.

The best thing about a Canada visa is that there is NO VISA INTERVIEW.

The US visa interview process is frightening to many. If you have been to one, you would know what I mean. The high security at the consulate, lining up in the street outside the building, intimidating visa officers, questions that you were not prepared for, and the list goes on.

If you do not have a US consulate in your city, you have to travel to the nearest city where the US consulate is. The visa fee itself is quite steep and on top of that, these travel expenses can add up.

Why should you get a Canada tourist visa?

Though a Canada visa doesn’t offer as much VISA-FREE travel as a US visa, a Canada visa has its advantages.

  • Canada visa application has no visa interview.
  • Canada tourist visa is also a long-term visa. Usually issued for 10 years or until the expiration of your passport.
  • The fee for Canada tourist visa is much lesser. It’s only 100 CAD.
  • India and China passport holders can even take advantage of the CAN+ expedited program.
  • Last but not least, Canada itself is a beautiful country. Have you ever seen the pictures of Banff National Park? Just Google it. It’s spectacular. That’s just one example. The country is vast, diverse and a nature lover’s paradise. It’s also culturally diverse and the people are the most polite in the world.

23 Canada PR Holder Visa Free Countries

If you are a Permanent Resident (PR) Cardholder in Canada, it might interest you to know that there are several countries you can visit without having to apply for a visa. A PR card is the most convenient way of proving status to authorities within Canada (e.g., provincial governments, employers, schools).

Permanent residents have other documentation (such as original landing papers) which is also acceptable, so there is no legal requirement for a permanent resident to carry a PR card at all times.

There are three types of Canada PR cards in circulation: 2002, 2009, and 2015 versions. As all PR card’s lifespans cannot exceed five years, the initial 2002 and 2009 versions should be no longer in use. All three versions of the card contain a maple leaf in front of the card, hence earning the nickname “maple leaf card”.

Please note that the Canada PR card is normally valid for five years. However, it may be valid for one year for those whose Canada PR status is being assessed by the IRCC. Please note that a PR card’s expiration date does not indicate that the holder’s status as a permanent resident has expired, or will expire, on that date.

It is the date after which the card must be replaced with a new card. Having said that, here is the list of countries that someone with a Canadian PR card can travel to without having a valid visa.

At present, it comprises the constituent countries of Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten (CAS islands), and the special municipalities of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba (BES islands).
