Carnival Theme Nights 2024: Schedule for Every Ship!

Photo of author

March 15, 2024

Carnival cruise theme nights

Carnival offers some of the most entertaining themed nights and parties at sea .

Since most theme nights require specific attire , many passengers like to know the schedule in advance.

Therefore, I’ve made this article with a description of them and the complete schedule for all ships for 2024 .

Table of Contents

’70s ’80s or ’90s Night

On almost every Carnival Cruise there’s a decade-themed night that celebrates the music, culture, and fashion of the ’70s, ’80s, or ’90s .

You can expect to hear hit songs from each era and have fun while dancing to them.

What to wear? It depends on the decade but generally:

For the ’70s : bell-bottom jeans, psychedelic or floral shirts and dresses, platform shoes. Think disco glam with lots of sparkles.

For the ’80s : bright neon shirts or skirts, off-the-shoulder tops, parachute pants, bandanas, leg warmers, and headbands.

On many ships the the ’80s night is called ’80s Rock n Glow Night, remember to bring with you some neon pieces of clothing.

carnival cruise which night is formal night

For the ’90s : grunge or hip-hop-inspired looks with baggy jeans, plaid mini skirts, band T-shirts, flannel shirts, and snapback caps.

  • White Night

White Night is one of the most famous on Carnival ships, it can be found on almost every ship and it is very easy to dress up in theme.

My advice is: open your closet and pick every white piece of clothing that you have , it’s as simple as that.

For its total white look, a man can wear white dress shirts, pants, and shoes. For a more chic version, a white blazer over a light-colored shirt can also work well.

Women can opt for white dresses, ranging from elegant gowns to casual summer dresses. For the accessories pearl jewelry and white clutches are just perfect.

carnival cruise which night is formal night

Elegant Night

One of the cruise’s highlights, Elegant Night invites guests to dress in their most formal attire. I have to say that, as time goes by, formal nights become less and less popular.

I personally still like to dress up for a few evenings on a cruise. There is no need to overdo it!

Men can wear tuxedos or dark suits , with ties or bow ties if they like it.

Women can wear evening gowns or cocktail dresses , paired with shiny jewels and evening clutches.

  • Island Night

On some cruises, there can be an Island Night . The idea is to capture the spirit of tropical heavens with Caribbean music, island-inspired cocktails, and activities that celebrate beach life.

The dress code for all includes bright floral shirts or dresses featuring palm leaf, floral, or other bright prints .

It’s basically the Carnival version of the Caribbean Night that you can find among the Royal Caribbean Theme Nights 2024 .

  • Motown Party

The Motown Party it’s a night dedicated to the sounds of Motown, with soulful music, classic hits, and an atmosphere that will bring you back to the golden age of rhythm and blues.

As far as I know, there’s no actual dress code for this party. To stay on topic you can opt for a ’50s or ’60s outfit .

Vintage suits, fedoras, and polished dress shoes for men. A-line dresses, sequined tops, and flared skirts for women.

Will all the party’s listed happen on every cruise? Do I need to bring outfits for all then find out when I board which ones they will have or is there a way to find out beforehand so I don’t overpack?

Hello Selena, unfortunately the parties can change very often during the year so there is never 100% certainty about which ones there will be. My advice is to bring clothes that can adapt well to the different parties, but that you can also wear normally during your cruise.

What is serenity night on the magic?

as far as I know it should be a deck party at serenity, which is an adults-only area for guests ages 21 and over.

Well, the day you can expect as a formal night on a carnival cruise depends on your itinerary.

However, the general rule of thumb is that.

  • Similarly, the last day of the cruise also can’t be a grand night.
  • Additionally, you must remember that you can not have two formal nights in a row

So, you can expect the first elegant evening cruise in the second and third cruises, and the second evening can be scheduled for the 2nd last or the third day before the cruise primarily ends.

Cruise Formal Night Explained: 10 Things to Know (What to Wear and More…)

Formal night on a cruise is a classic tradition, but for many passengers, it can also lead to lots of questions. Do I have to dress up? What can I wear? When are the formal nights?

Formal wear on a cruise ship

We’ve taken dozens of cruise and know that for those unfamiliar with formal night, it can feel a bit unnerving trying to figure out the ins and outs of dressing up. No one wants to head to dinner underdressed. At the same time, some people don’t want to dress up at all and prefer to know what other options they have.

Below, we’ve covered some of the most frequent questions about formal night on a cruise.

In This Article...

What Is a Cruise Formal Night?

Just as the name implies, formal night is the evening on the cruise when the dress code goes from the casual style that’s normal around the ship to more elegant. It’s a chance for passengers on the ship to put on their best and have an evening out that feels more special than just going to grab dinner in the dining room.

You’ll find people around the ship dressed up, having drinks, taking formal pictures, and enjoying dinner and a show. Think of it as a special event where many passengers have an elegant “date night” that’s more memorable than just another dinner on the ship.

Do I Have to Dress Up?

Absolutely not. Your cruise is your own. If you don’t want to dress up for the evening, then you certainly don’t have to do so. Many people choose to keep it casual. If you decide that shorts and a t-shirt are as formal as you want to get, you won’t be alone.

However, if you do decide to not dress up, it’s a good idea to dine outside of the main dining room or higher-end specialty restaurants. These are spots that request nicer dress during formal night.

Even if casual dress is allowed in the dining room during formal night, you might feel out of place with others wearing suits or evening gowns.

What Can I Wear to Formal Night? Do I Have to Wear a Tux or an Evening Gown?

Perhaps the biggest question around formal night on a cruise is what to wear. What’s acceptable is wide-ranging. No, you don’t have to go out and get a tuxedo or a formal evening gown unless you want to.

For instance, you can go all out and dress up in your best. And you will see some people around the cruise ship go this route. But you don’t have to wear a suit or tux to enjoy the evening.

Women can simply wear a cocktail dress or a nice blouse with pants. For men, it’s fine to wear a suit, or even a buttoned-down shirt and a pair of slacks if you don’t want to get too fancy. Nice jeans would also be ok, although we’d suggest something slightly more dressy.

That said, not everything goes. There are some clothing items to avoid if you plan to eat in the dining room on formal night. This includes shorts, tank-tops, t-shirts, and swimsuits, as well as flip-flops. If you’d wear it to the pool or the beach, you don’t want to wear it to formal night.

  • Ok to Wear for Formal Night (Women): Gowns, dresses, skirts, blouses with pants
  • Ok to Wear for Formal Night (Men): Tuxedoes, suits, button-down shirts, slacks, nice jeans
  • Avoid Wearing (Men and Women): Shorts, tank tops, t-shirts, flip-flops

Is The Dress Code Strictly Enforced?

Don’t worry, you aren’t likely to be denied entry to the dining room, even if you are dressed casually. It’s not like an exclusive nightclub that bars entry.

While the name might be “formal” or “elegant” night, you won’t be out of place as long as you dress nicer than a t-shirt and shorts. Remember, the cruise lines want you to enjoy yourself and not be worried about if you should be in a tuxedo.

For that reason, as long as you avoid wearing something very casual (e.g. flip flops, shorts, and a tank top), it’s likely to be no issue. Even so, we’d highly recommend dressing up somewhat if you plan on eating in a dining room or a nicer specialty restaurant. Not only will you feel more comfortable around others who are dressed up, but it also adds to the atmosphere of formal night for others.

Where Should I Eat If I Don’t Dress Up?

Formal dining room on a cruise ship

While the main dining room is the spot for formal eating during the evening, you won’t go hungry if you decide not to take part in dressing up. Every cruise ship offers a number of different places to eat, with many casual dining options for those who aren’t getting fancy for the evening.

For instance, instead of the main dining room you can head to the buffet or one of the 24-hour restaurants around the ship. The restaurant’s atmosphere will give you an idea of if it’s ok to eat there dressed casually or not. The fancy steakhouse? You want to go formal. The spot serving pizza? Shorts and a t-shirt are just fine.

Is Formal Night For Everywhere on the Ship?

While you’ll definitely see people dressed up all around the ship, the only place where you’ll find any sort of suggested or required dress code is in the dining room and/or specialty restaurants.

So if you are just hanging out around the ship — having a drink in a bar, playing in the casino, watching an evening show — then you are perfectly fine dressing down. You won’t be the only one. While many people participate in formal night, a considerable chunk of passengers don’t.

How Many Formal Nights Are There During the Cruise?

The number of formal nights varies based on the length of your cruise. The rule of thumb is that a week-long cruise will have two formal nights during the trip (i.e. Day 2 and Day 5). Shorter trips normally have one.

It may be that if you are on a very short cruise (e.g. three days), there might not even be one formal night. For instance, we’ve been on one short cruise with “Wear Your Best” (i.e. the nicest thing you packed) instead of formal night.

Does Everyone on the Ship Dress Up?

No. If you decide to not dress up, then you certainly won’t be out of place. Many people choose to dress casually and just eat somewhere else other than the main dining room or higher-end restaurants. Even so, formal nights are popular and when you walk around the ship in the evening on one of these nights, there is no mistaking that it’s dressier than normal.

How Will I Know When it Is Formal Night?

Notice of formal night

Nothing would stop you in your tracks like heading down to dinner in a pair of shorts and then realizing everyone else is dressed up! Fortunately, you’ll get plenty of notice when it is formal night.

The most obvious spot will be with your daily cruise planner delivered to your cabin each day or through the cruise line’s app. There will be some mention of the dinner attire. It may be referred to as “formal” or “cruise elegant” or some other name. They all mean the same thing: Time to get dressed up!

As well, there are almost always announcements from the cruise director throughout the day sharing what is going on during the day and evening. They will usually mention it when it is formal night, so keep an ear out for announcements.

In the worst case, even if you don’t see any notice at all, you will definitely not miss the fact that many people are dressed up when you head to dinner that evening. That should give you a little time to head back to the room and dress up if you want to join in.

Do I Need to Dress Up at Any Other Time Than Formal Night?

For the most part, the only time you’ll need to dress anything other than casual is if you participate in formal night. That said, there are some spots where some nicer clothes are a good idea even if that evening’s dress code is casual.

Specifically, if you plan to visit any of the higher-end specialty restaurants on the ship, such as the steakhouse, then there may be a dress code.

Even if there is not, dressing up to fit the style of the restaurant is smart. So while it’s ok to dress casually at a burger joint on the ship, you’ll want to dress a little nicer if you go to the formal Italian or seafood spot for dinner.

Bottom Line on Cruise Formal Nights

The formal nights on a cruise are a fun way to do things a little differently. If you’re not someone that gets dressed up often, don’t worry. The rules around what’s formal and what’s not are flexible. As long as you make some sort of effort to dress a little nice, you’ll be fine. And if you want to go all out, you won’t be alone!

If you’re someone who likes to keep things casual, then that’s no issue either. While we’d suggest not eating the main dining room or nicer specialty restaurants on that night, you can wear what you want around the ship.

I wore a nice outfit each night, like a skirt or dress. My embarkation outfit for the first night I modified by taking off the pants and putting on a skirt. I even kept the high boots on, which really worked! The last night I had a long ‘cover up’ dress that I gussied up with a sparkly throw and wedge high sandals.

When Is Formal Night On An 8-Day Carnival Cruise?

carnival cruise which night is formal night

Cruise ships have a long tradition of holding formal nights, where passengers dress up in evening gowns, suits, and tuxedos. On a typical 8-day Carnival cruise there are two designated formal nights. If you want to plan ahead and know exactly when to break out your cocktail dresses and bow ties, here are the details on formal night timing for 8-day Carnival cruises.

If you’re short on time, here’s the quick answer: Formal nights on 8-day Carnival cruises are typically the 3rd and 6th days of the cruise .

Formal Nights are Usually on the 3rd and 6th Days

When planning a cruise vacation, it’s natural to wonder about the dress code and when formal nights will be held. On an 8-day Carnival Cruise, formal nights are typically scheduled for the 3rd and 6th days of the trip.

These evenings provide an opportunity for guests to dress up, enjoy a fancy dinner, and indulge in the glamorous atmosphere of the ship.

On formal nights, guests are encouraged to wear elegant attire such as suits, tuxedos, cocktail dresses, or evening gowns. It’s a chance to showcase your style and feel like royalty for a night. The ship’s restaurants and entertainment venues are usually buzzing with excitement as everyone dons their finest outfits.

During formal nights, the ship’s photographers are also on hand to capture the moment. You can take stunning portraits with your loved ones or strike a pose on the grand staircase, just like the movie stars. These photographs make for cherished mementos of your cruise experience.

What if you don’t want to dress up?

While formal nights are a popular event on cruises, they are not mandatory. If you prefer a more casual evening, there are usually alternative dining options available on the ship. You can still enjoy a delicious meal without feeling obligated to dress up.

Additionally, many cruise lines offer a range of onboard activities and entertainment choices, so you can find something that suits your preferences.

It’s important to note that the dress code for the rest of the cruise is generally more relaxed. Most evenings are designated as “cruise casual,” where you can wear comfortable and casual attire. This allows you to fully enjoy the relaxed vacation atmosphere without the need for formalwear.

Tips for Formal Nights on a Carnival Cruise

If you decide to participate in the formal nights on your Carnival Cruise, here are a few tips to make the experience even more enjoyable:

  • Plan your outfits in advance: Take the time to select your formal attire before the cruise. This will ensure that you have everything you need and reduce any last-minute stress.
  • Accessorize: Add some sparkle to your outfit with jewelry, a stylish tie, or a statement handbag. Accessories can elevate your look and add a personal touch.
  • Book a table at a specialty restaurant: If you want to enhance the formal dining experience, consider making a reservation at one of the ship’s specialty restaurants. These venues often offer a more intimate setting and gourmet cuisine.
  • Relax and have fun: Remember, formal nights are meant to be enjoyable and memorable. Take the opportunity to socialize, dance, and create lasting memories with your fellow cruisers.

By knowing when formal nights are typically scheduled on an 8-day Carnival Cruise and understanding your options, you can make the most of your cruise experience. Whether you choose to dress up or embrace a more casual evening, the choice is yours. Bon voyage!

The First Formal Night Coincides with the Captain’s Dinner

One of the most anticipated events on an 8-day Carnival Cruise is the formal night. This is an opportunity for guests to dress up in their finest attire and enjoy an elegant evening on board the ship. On an 8-day Carnival Cruise, the first formal night usually coincides with the Captain’s Dinner, which is a special event where passengers have the chance to dine with the captain of the ship.

The Captain’s Dinner is a highlight of the cruise and is typically held on the first or second night of the voyage. It is a formal affair, with the captain and other officers of the ship in attendance.

Guests are encouraged to dress up in their formal attire, such as tuxedos and evening gowns, to fully enjoy the occasion. The dining room is beautifully decorated, and the atmosphere is filled with excitement and anticipation.

What to Expect on the First Formal Night

On the first formal night, guests can expect a variety of activities and events to take place throughout the evening. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Captain’s Welcome Reception: Before the Captain’s Dinner, there is usually a reception where guests can meet and mingle with the captain and other officers. This is a great opportunity to take photos and chat with the crew.
  • Formal Dining Experience: The Captain’s Dinner is a multi-course meal served in the main dining room. The menu is typically more extravagant than usual, with options ranging from seafood to prime rib. Guests can expect top-notch service and a memorable dining experience.
  • After dinner, there is often live entertainment in the ship’s theater or lounge. This can include Broadway-style shows, comedy acts, or live music performances. It’s a great way to end the evening on a high note.

It’s important to note that while formal attire is encouraged on the first formal night, it is not mandatory. Some guests may choose to dress more casually, while others embrace the opportunity to go all out with their formal wear. The main objective is to have fun and enjoy the festive atmosphere.

If you’re unsure about what to wear on the first formal night, Carnival Cruise Line provides guidelines on their website. They recommend cocktail dresses, pantsuits, or dressy skirts for women, and suits or tuxedos for men.

It’s always a good idea to pack a range of outfits to suit different occasions and personal preferences.

Which Nights Are Formal Nights on 7 Day Carnival Cruise?

By Robert Palmer

Carnival Cruise is known for its fun-filled and exciting voyages for travelers of all ages. One aspect that adds to the charm of a Carnival Cruise experience is the theme nights. These are nights where passengers dress up in theme-based attire and participate in various activities on board.

Among these theme nights, formal nights hold a special place. Formal nights are a chance for passengers to dress up in their best attire and enjoy an elegant evening on the ship. However, many passengers are often confused about which nights are formal on a seven-day Carnival Cruise.

To clear up this confusion, let’s take a closer look at which nights are formal on a seven-day Carnival Cruise.

What is Formal Night?

Before we dive into which nights are formal on a seven-day Carnival Cruise, let’s first understand what formal night entails. Formal night is an opportunity for passengers to dress up in their fanciest attire, which typically includes tuxedos, suits, cocktail dresses, or gowns.

On this night, many dining options offer special menus and the ship’s photographers will be clicking pictures of guests dressed in their finery. The vibe on the ship becomes more elegant and sophisticated as everyone gets into the spirit of formal night.

Which Nights Are Formal Nights?

On a seven-day Carnival Cruise, there are typically two formal nights in total. The exact days may vary depending on the itinerary of your specific cruise but generally occur around mid-week during your voyage.

If you’re wondering how you can find out which days your cruise has designated as formal night, don’t worry! The information is usually available in your cruise’s daily newsletter or through the Carnival Hub App.

While formal attire is not mandatory for dining on these designated evenings, it is encouraged as it adds to the overall ambiance of the dining experience. However, if dressing up is not your thing, there are other dining options available on the ship that do not require formal attire.

It’s essential to keep in mind that there is a dress code on Carnival Cruise ships, even on non-formal nights. For instance, shorts and flip-flops are not allowed in the main dining room during dinner hours.

Tips for Formal Night

If you’re a first-time cruiser or unsure what to wear on formal night, here are some tips:

  • Check with the cruise line for specific dress code guidelines for the evening.
  • Plan your outfit in advance and pack accordingly.
  • Opt for comfortable shoes as you may be standing or walking around while wearing your formal attire.
  • Consider bringing a small bag to carry touch-up items such as lipstick or a comb.

In Conclusion

Formal night is an exciting and glamorous aspect of any Carnival Cruise experience. On a typical seven-day voyage, there will be two designated formal nights around mid-week. Remember to check your daily newsletter or Carnival Hub App for specific dates and dress code guidelines.

What to Wear on a Cruise Formal Night (and frequently asked questions)

What to Wear on Cruise Formal Night & Frequently Asked Questions

Sharing is caring!

Wondering what to wear on a cruise formal night? One of the most fun, but surprisingly stressful parts of planning a cruise, is planning your formal wear attire.

You might be wondering what to expect on cruise formal nights, how many there are, and even if you can skip them if you like.

In this post, I’ll answer some questions you may have about formal nights on a cruise and how they work. Plus, I’ll share some  recommendations for cruise formal wear to make it easy.

What is Formal Night on a Cruise?

cruise formal night what to wear

Formal night is a special evening during the cruise when cruise passengers dress up in fancy or formal attire. However it doesn’t stop there. There is usually a special meal served in the Main Dining Room, where guests might be treated to a choice of menu which includes loster tail or prime rib, or a “surf and turf”. This is often a passenger favorite!

Formal night is sometimes referred to as Captain’s Night, and the Cruise Ship Captain will often make a speech welcoming all guests to his ship. The Captain will often be available for a photo opportunity with one of the cruise ship’s professional photographers.

In addition, there may be other formal night traditions to enjoy. For example, Princess Cruises have a champagne waterfall, where guests can participate and have a photo as well. If there are “welcome back” parties for past passengers, they often occur on formal night as well.

Formal Night Photos

Cruise ship formal nights are a great time to get professional photos taken. Whether you’re cruising as a couple for an anniversary or special occasion, or cruising as a family , there is no better time to capture the memories.

Truthfully, some way wonder if buying photos or a photo package on a cruise ship is worth it. However, at about $25 for an 8 x 10 photo or about $200 for a larger photo package, I think it’s a splurge that may be worth it on a cruise . Professional photo shoots in most cities will cost more than this, and will be much less convenient.

Do all cruise lines have formal nights?

Most popular cruise lines have a formal night, or a version of it by a different name, during each cruise. In recent years, cruises are becoming more casual and dress codes are changing , however, having a special “dress up” night is still very common.

Some cruise line’s formal nights may be called Gala Nights , which are usually quite formal. Other cruise dress codes include Celebrity’s “Evening Chic” and Carnival’s “Cruise Elegant”, which leave more leeway for dressing up with less formality. Norwegian Cruise Line does not have a formal night, however they do have an optional dress up night called “Norwegian Night Out”.

Since cruise lines can really differ on what type of attire is expected on formal nights, it’s important to check your cruise line’s dress codes to make sure you pack the appropriate cruise wear.

How many formal nights are there on a cruise?

Most cruise lines have 1 formal night on cruises that are 6 days and less, and 2 formal nights on cruises 7 days and more.

In short, if you’re sailing on a 3, 4 or 5 night cruise, there will be one formal or dress up night. Typical 7 night cruises will have 2 formal nights.

Some cruise lines, including Holland America and Princess Cruises, will have 3 formal nights on cruises that are 14 days and longer.

Which night of my cruise is formal night?

When someone says "formal night" everyone just knows you're talking about a cruise.  Whether you look forward to donning a three piece suit, or you try as best as you can to avoid wearing shoes, you'll want to plan for whatever the more "dressed up" evenings are on your next cruise.

There is no maritime law for formal night schedules - such laws are usually reserved for safety concerns and how to handle an emotionally distraught cruise blogger that's been on stuck on shore for months.  Let's look at a few ways you can try and figure out exactly when you'll need to break out the nice clothes, or as is often the case for me, what night you'll be heading to the buffet instead of the dining room.

Steve and Gabby on Independence of the Seas

Is There a Formal Night?

Before worrying about when formal night is, make sure there is one.  Norwegian Cruise Line doesn't have formal evenings with their "Freestyle" cruising.  This is also true of a number of luxury lines, some of which may have a strict dress code most evenings, and others, like Oceania, which are more relaxed throughout the whole cruise.  Before checking your cruise line website, you should also know that many lines have moved toward different names (and levels of dress) for these special evenings.  This includes Celebrity's Evening Chic, Carnival's Cruise Elegant Nights, and Holland America Line 's Gala Nights.  Interestingly, Royal Caribbean has, in addition to formal nights, "Wear Your Best" nights on sailings of five nights or less - which is essentially "formal night  light" , and their ship Empress of the Seas has no formal nights at all.

Red Giner - Oceania Has No Formal Nights, Every Day/Night is "Country Club Casual"

How Many Formal Nights Are There?

This varies by cruise line, but even more, by cruise length.  Here are some common guidelines - but of course, there are always exceptions.

  • Unusually short cruises, like the two-nighter we recently enjoyed on Celebrity Infinity often have no formal nights.
  • Sailings of ten or fewer nights usually have two formal nights.
  • Most lines have three formal nights on sailings of 14 nights or more, though Royal Caribbean often features three formal evenings on sailings of 11 nights or more.
  • If you're on a back-to-back sailing, where you're staying on for two cruises of seven nights (for example), keep in mind the points above are based on the ship's scheduled itinerary - not yours.

Billy and Larissa on Celebrity Century - When I Had a Suit That Fit

When  Isn't  Formal Night?

This may seem a strange way of wording things, but it's often easier to work out this way.  It's very uncommon to have a formal night on the first or last night of the cruise.  Beyond folks often just wanting to take it easy these nights, it's also because on the first night you may not have your luggage in time - or you may want things pressed.  Similarly, on the last night of the cruise many folks pack up all but the bare essentials before going to dinner.  Unless you're my maternal grandfather, a tie is probably not on your essentials list.

Common Formal Evening Schedules

Many of the larger lines will, for cruises of around a week in length, make formal nights the second and next-to-last evenings.  If however one of those nights you're scheduled to be in port until after 6:00 or 7:00pm, they'll likely not schedule formal night for that day of your trip, and instead, move it to another day.  On Royal Caribbean it is a bit more predictable, with Oasis class ships' formal nights on days two and five on Western Caribbean itineraries and days two and six on Eastern Caribbean itineraries.

Celebrity Edge in Port Late in San Juan

How to Find Exactly When Your Formal Nights Will Be

You can't.  Cruise lines don't even know for sure, as while they often have plans, plans change.  Itineraries can change, so can schedules, and those in charge might make a change at any time.  You can however get a good idea of what they're planning.  In addition to those tips noted above, if you can find a recent daily program from a cruise on the same ship and itinerary that you're sailing, you can find out what nights were formal, what activities and entertainment were available, and more.  Again - it's not a guarantee, but it can help you figure out what to expect.  We have a growing collection of daily programs from cruises , and you might want to check here for a giant collection of Royal Caribbean Cruise Compasses .

Cool Cruiser

Hi. When are the formal nights for a 7 night cruise on the Carnival Breeze? Cruising February 5-12. I'd like to make a reservation for the steakhouse and would prefer during a formal night. Thanks!!

Reserving steakhouse at formal night will make you miss the Lobsters :).
That's alright. Neither of us will be ordering the lobster. If I'm going to a steakhouse that has the description of a "world-class" steakhouse, then I'll be ordering a big juicy medium-rare steak :)

DCCruiser1013

On the 7 day Pride cruise, if you could embarkation as day 1, the formal nights are nights 2 and 6.

Okay. Formal nights were the same on the Freedom as DCCruiser had on the Pride. Not sure what the Breeze's formal nights are but assume it will be the same. Hopefully someone who cruised on it recently will let you know.

Thanks. So if the Breeze is the same, that would be Monday night and Friday night, correct?

If it starts on a Sunday, probably.

I do think that the first one may vary depending on your itinerary. I do believe they try to have the first formal night on your first sea day. On the Pride that works out to day 2. On our Glory cruise, however, we were in Half Moon Cay on the day after embarkation. The day after was a sea day, so our first formal night was on day 3.

So basically your first formal night will probably be your first day at sea.

The lobster in the Steakhouse is far superior to the tiny lobster in the MDR, not even close

Luke Saint Joe

On all 7 night cruises I've been on, formal nights are 2 & 6 as stated above.

Okay thanks!!

I know. I was saying the OP would miss lobster night in the MDR

  • 3 weeks later...

I'm about to make my reservation for the Steakhouse. And I'd just like to confirm...

My cruise is Feb 5-12. It's my understanding the "cruise elegant" nights would be the 2nd and 6th nights, which would be Feb 6th and Feb 10, respectively, is that correct?? I'm looking to make my reservations for Feb 6th and just wanted confirmation. It doesn't list anywhere on my itinerary when the actual elegant nights would be.

In my experience the formal nights are always on a sea day, usually the first sea day and then another towards the end of the cruise but not the last night.

Two formal nights on a 7 night cruise. Lobster is usually the first formal night so one could miss the second formal night and still eat lobster.

Normally, but no guarantees.

Usually it is Night 2 and Night 6 on 7 day cruises, especially if those Nights 2&6 are sea days. To each his own, but I would never schedule the steakhouse on a formal night. Even if you're not lobster fans, they usually have their better appetizers and desserts on the menu that night, and usually have prime rib as well.

Oh, ok. I was just thinking since it's an "upscale" restaurant that we should go during a formal night, to kind of make it more of a special occasion. But if the MDR's have better food during formal nights then I'll just reserve the steakhouse on another night. Thanks for the feedback.

evandbob

In the olden days of cruising, when they had Formal nights, some cruisers would go the Steakhouse so they wouldn't have to dress "formally" for the MDR.

Those days are long gone. Today I like the Steakhouse on the night or 2 before the 2nd "elegant" or on the last night of a cruise.

bar1068

The MDR does NOT have "better food" than the steakhouse on ANY night.

We have done 3 Breeze cruises and formal night was the first sea day and day 6:)

Lobster was the 2nd formal night, Prime RIB THE FIRST.

We have done 3 Breeze cruises and formal night was the first sea day and day 6:) Lobster was the 2nd formal night, Prime RIB THE FIRST.

Thanks for this information!

As I have been away from Carnival for a while, Formal nite means no tee's and or jeans at MDR and you will be turned away if showing up this way and lobster is one and done or are seconds available?

I think I might just reserve the steakhouse for the last night of the cruise, which would be Saturday. Or night 3 (2nd day at sea). I don't want to miss prime rib in the MDR on the first formal night, and I don't want to reserve the steakhouse for any night after being in port since we will be doing excursions in every port and we wouldn't want to feel rushed to get back and get cleaned up for dinner. Thanks everyone for the advice!!

In the MDR on lobster night, you can have as many lobster tails as you want.

The 8 best Hawaii cruises in 2024 and 2025

C ruising the Hawaiian Islands offers U.S. travelers an immersive South Pacific escape with all the comforts of home. In fact, the Aloha State is in many ways an ideal cruise destination. It has year-round sunny weather, four main islands featuring varied topographies — including sandy beaches, cascading waterfalls, volcanic mountains and vibrant green valleys — and a wide array of land- and water-based activities.

The main caveat? Hawaii cruise options are somewhat limited — just a fraction of what's available in the Caribbean — and many itineraries involve multiday crossings from the West Coast. Only one cruise line offers Hawaii itineraries throughout the year; most others visit during specific months or when repositioning ships in spring and fall.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Looking for the Hawaiian Islands sailing that's right for you? Here's a look at the eight best Hawaii cruises for every type of traveler.

Norwegian Cruise Line's 7-night Inter-island Hawaii

For travelers who want more aloha time than the typical eight-hour port call allows, Norwegian Cruise Line has a solution. Its 2,186-passenger Pride of America lets vacationers sample four Hawaiian islands over seven days, with overnights in Maui and Kauai, plus port calls on both Hilo and Kona on the island of Hawaii. In total, this itinerary offers nearly 100 hours of shore time.

Pride of America sails round-trip from Honolulu every Saturday year-round. As a U.S.-flagged ship, it's the only large vessel permitted to sail this way. Not only do you skip the long Pacific crossing that most cruise ships do to reach Hawaii, but passports are not required for U.S. citizens, and you can tack on pre- or post-cruise stays on Oahu.

The overnights on Maui and Kauai also mean it's possible to try several of Hawaii's signature experiences that most port calls don't allow. Passengers can catch dusk or dawn from atop Maui's massive 10,023-foot dormant volcano with sunrise and sunset excursions to the Haleakala Crater. And with the ship in port all night on Kauai, guests who want to enjoy traditional Hawaiian cuisine, music and hula performances can book the Luau Kalamaku for a fun evening out.

Pride of America, which has been cruising Hawaii since 2005, doesn't have the onboard thrills (race track, virtual-reality gaming, waterslides) of Norwegian's newer ships , but that's okay because the islands, not the ship, are your main destination. Its American-themed decor celebrates U.S. cities in a vibrant, and at times, kitschy way, but a 2021 refurbishment left its cabins and public spaces feeling refreshed.

Many of Norwegian's specialty dining venues (which incur a surcharge) are on board, including Cagney's Steakhouse, Le Bistro (here, it's Jefferson's Bistro), Moderno Churrascaria and Teppanyaki.

Who should go: Anyone seeking a convenient way to island-hop — and see a lot of Hawaii — by making the most of the generous shore time with a combination of independent exploration and shore excursions. Most sailings attract couples ages 50 and older, although summer and holiday sailings have plenty of families on board.

UnCruise Adventures' 7-night Hawaiian Seascapes

Cruisers seeking a less traditional, more carefree Hawaii experience can have it from November to April aboard UnCruise Adventures ' 36-passenger Safari Explorer. The seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary, which begins either on Molokai or the island of Hawaii, is an unconventional one designed for those who enjoy going off the beaten path in an intimate and more authentic setting. U.S. passports aren't required to sail.

UnCruise visits four islands — Maui and Lanai plus Molokai and Hawaii — and focuses on not only their striking landscapes and underwater beauty but also the cultural traditions, cuisine and music of the Hawaiian people. On Molokai, where there's not a single traffic light and the lifestyle is slow-paced, passengers get a chance to "talk story" with locals and enjoy a pa'ina (feast) and evening jam session. Lanai activities range from snorkel, paddleboard and kayak excursions to off-road adventures exploring the privately owned island's dramatic sea cliffs, red rock formations and vast fields once filled with Dole pineapples.

Most UnCruise sailings are during Maui's humpback whale season, so sightings while cruising off the coast of Maui are possible. You might also catch glimpses of dolphins and sea turtles. A "Captain's Choice" day is a wild card determined by the weather, marine life in the area and other factors, while the final two days are spent exploring the Big Island of Hawaii — including a hike up Hualalai volcano and a skiff ride along the rugged coast.

Constructed in 1998, Safari Explorer was designed with adventure itineraries in mind (in summer the U.S.-flagged ship repositions to Alaska). Its size allows it to navigate areas larger ships can't reach, which in Hawaii means bays and coves ideal for snorkeling or watersports.

With such a small number of passengers aboard, guests get to know each other — and Safari Explorer's friendly and knowledgeable crew — quite well. Passengers come together over meals featuring locally sourced ingredients, and as all UnCruise fares include unlimited wines, spirits and microbrews, shipmates can raise a glass without worrying who's buying a round. It all lends itself to an exclusive yet utterly relaxed week of cruising.

Who should go: The ship's laid-back onboard vibe paired with its land- and water-based activities make the Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary ideal for active travelers seeking a nature-focused itinerary — although cruise fares (which start around $5,900 per person) are among the priciest for a Hawaii cruise.

Holland America's 17-night Circle Hawaii

Travelers who have more than two weeks to spare and who prefer to arrive in Hawaii via ship rather than an airplane can do so on Holland America 's 17-night Circle Hawaii itinerary. They'd better also love sea days because crossing the Pacific from San Diego or Vancouver to Honolulu and back requires 10 days.

That means passengers enjoy five or six days in Hawaii on Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the island of Hawaii. Some itineraries stay in select ports overnight. Cruises departing from San Diego also call on Ensenada, Mexico. With either departure port, passports will be required.

The itinerary is offered in 2024 and 2025 on the 2,650-passenger Koningsdam and 1,432-passenger Zaandam.

Travelers with more time on their hands can also visit Hawaii as part of longer Pacific island cruises with Holland America. Koningsdam will sail a 35-night Hawaii, Tahiti & Marquesas itinerary in 2025 that combines visits to four Hawaiian islands with calls on five islands in French Polynesia and Fanning Island, Kiribati (and 20 sea days).

Related: Holland America unveils epic cruise to Hawaii and Alaska for 2025

Zaandam will also sail 51- to 56-night Tales of the South Pacific itineraries that visit multiple islands in Hawaii and French Polynesia along with ports in the Cook Islands, American Samoa and Fiji.

Holland America is popular with cruisers ages 60 and older, many of them retired, who have time to enjoy longer itineraries on ships that offer good value with a focus on culinary and musical enjoyment. Two of Koningsdam's most popular venues are its live entertainment area with three venues — B.B. King's Blues Club (for Memphis-style rhythm and blues), Billboard Onboard (for chart-topping hits played by a live pianist) and Rolling Stone Rock Room (for a live band playing classic rock), and World Stage, a theater with a 270-degree screen used for both special BBC Earth in Concert and theatrical productions.

Onboard specialty dining options (at an added cost) include Pinnacle Grill for steaks and seafood, Tamarind for Pan-Asian cuisine and Rudi's Sel de Mer for French Brasserie specialties and seafood.

Who should go: Mature travelers who prefer not to fly and who enjoy a more traditional cruise experience. They should also love sea days as much (or even more so) than port exploration.

Princess Cruises' 15- or 16-night Hawaiian Islands

Princess Cruises is also a good option for longer sailings. The cruise line offers numerous round-trip itineraries to Hawaii from Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego in the fall and winter.

The majority of sailings are aboard the 3,080-passenger Crown Princess and Ruby Princess from San Francisco, and the 2,600-passenger Grand Princess and 3,080-passenger Emerald Princess from Los Angeles.

Ships are in port for nine to 11 hours in Hawaii (Hilo), Kauai and Maui and for 16 hours in Oahu. Itineraries include a stop in Ensenada, Mexico (so passports are required), plus nine or 10 sea days.

The ships feature many of Princess' popular dining venues, including Alfredo's Pizzeria (a sit-down venue serving personal-size pizzas), Crown Grill for steaks and Sabatini's Italian Trattoria. There's plenty of outdoor space for soaking up the sun — including an adults-only sun deck — and a dazzling Piazza for enjoying cocktails, gelato and pop-up street performers.

Fans of Princess' Movies Under the Stars poolside screenings (with free popcorn) and Discovery at SEA enrichment programming will have ample time to enjoy these perks on a Hawaii sailing.

Who should go: These sailings will appeal to couples or groups of friends who prefer to have a wide choice of sailing dates, can take the time to enjoy a leisurely Pacific crossing and appreciate Princess' focus on quality cuisine and a sun deck designed for relaxation rather than thrills.

Celebrity's 9- to 12-night Hawaii Cruise

Travelers seeking modern interior decor on a ship designed with couples in mind can visit Hawaii aboard Celebrity Cruises ' 2,852-passenger Celebrity Solstice or 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge on itineraries ranging from nine to 13 nights — but only if the timing is right. That's because the line offers only two sailings per ship each year (in spring and fall) as the ships reposition between Alaska and destinations in the Pacific. The itineraries are one-way (Vancouver to Honolulu or vice versa) with passports required.

These cruises call on three ports on two islands: Honolulu (Oahu) and Hilo and Kona (Hawaii), with one or two overnights in port and 10 hours ashore on one-day visits. All include five days in a row at sea. Since the itineraries either begin or end in Honolulu, there's also a chance for some pre- or post-cruise exploration.

Sea days offer opportunities to enjoy the chic, grown-up ambience and amenities aboard these ships. Each vessel offers multiple complimentary and extra-fee specialty restaurants. Celebrity Solstice features Tuscan Grille for Italian specialties and steak and Murano for modern French cuisine, while Celebrity Edge offers the whimsical Le Petit Chef and the international Eden Restaurant.

Celebrity's signature Martini Bar and many other onboard watering holes keep the grown-up vibe going day and night. Choose cruise fares that include alcohol and Wi-Fi, or pay a lower rate and pay for your drinks as you go.

Who should go: The slightly shorter one-way sailings and the ships' contemporary ambience make these itineraries ideal for couples and groups of friends seeking a relaxing escape — especially Gen Xers in their 40s and 50s, who are Celebrity's target market.

Carnival's 14- or 15-night Hawaii from Los Angeles

If fun is your cruise mantra, the "Fun Ship" brand Carnival Cruise Line offers a handful of round-trip sailings to Hawaii from Los Angeles (Long Beach) aboard the 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance. Like other roundtrips from the West Coast, these itineraries spend just five days in Hawaii, offering eight to 14 hours of shore time in ports on four islands: Maui, Kauai, Oahu and Hawaii. Along with enjoying eight sea days, guests will also call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Carnival Radiance first sailed under that name in 2021, but it's not a new ship. Before an epic makeover, it sailed for the cruise line as Carnival Victory. Ship features include many of Carnival's signature complimentary and extra-fee dining venues, including Guy's Burger Joint and Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse, BlueIguana Cantina, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and Bonsai Sushi Express.

Additional guest favorite destinations on board include the RedFrog Pub, Alchemy Bar and WaterWorks aquapark. Expect high-voltage theater shows from Playlist Productions at night and poolside interactive contests by day.

Who should go: Socially inclined cruisers who love Carnival's emphasis on onboard fun and can appreciate a colorful ship with a lively ambience and lots of day and evening activities.

Royal Caribbean's 9- to 13-night Hawaii Cruises

A megaship cruise experience to Hawaii is available, too — with pricing that's quite affordable. Royal Caribbean cruises there on two vessels in one of its newer classes of ships: the 4,180-passenger Quantum of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas.

All are one-way cruises just before or after the Alaska cruise season (so late April or early October) between Oahu and Vancouver (or vice versa). The ships call on two Hawaiian islands and spend four or five days in a row at sea. Passports are required since these itineraries begin or end in Vancouver.

Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas feature a mix of thrills for all ages. These include RipCord by iFly simulated sky diving, FlowRider simulated surfing, bumper car racing in the SeaPlex indoor activity complex and the North Star sightseeing capsule, which ascends 300 feet above the top deck for 360-degree views.

Both ships also offer 14 dining venues, including the innovative Wonderland, Jamie's Italian by Jamie Oliver and kid-favorite Dog House, as well as bar options that include Schooner Bar for by-request piano tunes, Boleros for mojitos and merengue and Bionic Bar for drinks poured by robotic bartenders. Entertainment includes live cover bands in the Music Hall and multimedia music and dance performances in Two70.

Who should go: Cruisers who love a big ship with a wide array of dining choices, all kinds of evening entertainment and plenty of exciting activities to pass the time on sea days. Quantum-class ships are great for families, but the sail dates might not work for those with school-age kids.

Viking's 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn

For a guaranteed adults-only sailing in a relaxed, boutique-style setting, upscale cruise line Viking also offers round-trip Hawaii cruises from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 on its 930-passenger Viking Neptune.

What sets Viking apart from most of the other lines offering Hawaii cruises is that it includes a free shore excursion in every port. These include a highlights tour of Honolulu and Pearl Harbor on Oahu and a visit to a scenic waterfall and the Kilohana sugar plantation on Kauai. Additional excursions can be booked at an extra charge.

The 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn sailings visit four islands — Hawaii (Hilo), Oahu, Kauai and Maui — and like other round-trip sailings from the West Coast include 10 sea days and a call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Viking Neptune will also do 32-night Grand Hawaii and Polynesia sailings round-trip from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 that visit four islands in Hawaii and four in French Polynesia.

The ship, which debuted in 2022, features sleek Scandinavian-inspired decor, a soothing spa with a complimentary thermal area, an aft infinity pool and hot tub, a panoramic Explorer's Lounge and five onboard restaurants. Specialty restaurant Manfredi's serves an extensive menu of Italian specialties, while The Chef's Table offers rotating five-course themed menus, including Asian, French and California-inspired.

In addition to the free shore excursions, pricing includes complimentary wine or beer with lunch and dinner, specialty dining at no extra charge, crew gratuities and transfers.

Who should go: Couples who prefer the quieter ambience of a ship that doesn't allow anyone under 18 onboard, doesn't have a casino and offers presentations by regional experts that enhance immersion into local culture. Viking cruisers are generally over age 55.

Formal Night on a Carnival 7-day cruise calls for elegant attire, allowing passengers to embrace the sophistication and glamour of the evening. While the dress code is not mandatory, many guests choose to adhere to the suggested guidelines to enhance the overall ambiance of the event.

For gentlemen, the recommended attire for Formal Night includes wearing a suit or tuxedo. A suit may consist of dress pants, a button-down shirt, a tie, and a jacket. For those who prefer a more formal look, a tuxedo is the ideal choice. Pairing the formal attire with dress shoes completes the ensemble.

This can include cocktail dresses, evening gowns, or dressy separates such as a skirt or dress pants paired with a blouse.
