Why there is a need for Biometric registration for Char Dham Yatra

After the 2013 Uttarakhand floods, govt faced a lot of criticism for their preparedness for disaster management and instant flood and rain. So when the Yatra has been started in 2014, Uttarakhand govt. made the registration for Char Dham Yatra mandatory to trek all the movement and information about the pilgrimage for data, security & for mitigation purpose. So, if you are planning to visit any temple of char dham circuit, make sure to do Char dham registration before starting your Yatra.

Char Dham Yatra – Uttrakhand – How to plan a trip [Complete Travel Guide]

Shefali Joshi

Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand is collectively referred to as the Chota Char Dham of India. The four Abodes in Himalayas includes four holy shrines of Hindus: Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri.

All four of these temples are situated within the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. The prominence of the Charm Dham Yatra is immense amongst Hindus. Moreover, it is believed that every Hindu should do Char Dham Yatra at least once in their lifetime.

One the most popular pilgrimage route, Chota Char Dham Yatra is undertaken by quarter of a million of devotees each year paying homage. With the hope of eliminating all sins to attain salvation by the blessings of the Lord.

In fact, devotees visit the shrines not only from India, but, also there is immense growing popularity among foreign tourists, visiting out of curiosity and wanting to learn more about India, its culture.

Given the stunning beauty, the Himalayan charm, dense forests, large valleys and epic nature all around – Char Dham Yatra makes for the most majestic of journeys to partake in.

Gangotri, Yamunotri and Kedarnath Closed for Winters

Let's quickly dive into the details:

About Char Dham Yatra

As a brief, Kedarnath is devoted to Lord Shiva while Badrinath is devoted to Lord Vishnu. Yamunotri and Gangotri are dedicated to Goddesses Ganga and Yamuna rivers respectively.

Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand can be covered in one go, taking about 10-15 days (depending on your schedule). In fact, you may also get helicopter services to cover Char Dham in a matter of two days.

History of Char Dham

The Great Reformer and Philosopher, Adi Shankaracharya, gathered together these Holy Pilgrimage places into a spiritual circuit around the 8th century. Generation followed generations and hundreds of thousands of devotees have kept up the tradition of covering these pilgrimage spots every year.

However, it should be noted that during Winter season all Char dham are closed for Six month due to Heavy snowfall all temples are inaccessible. The Gods and Goddesses are moved to their “Winter abodes” during this time.

Opening and Closing Dates of the Yatra

Usually, the period for partaking in this Yatra is from April End – October End. However, each year the Uttarakhand Government announces the dates of the opening and closing of the circuit. In the winter times, the 4 shrines are moved to their winter sojourns.

Namely, Ukhimath, Joshimath, Mukhba and Kharsali for the deities of Kedarnath, Badrinath , Gangotri and Yamunotri respectively. The gates to all these winter Dhams remain open for devotees – thus, technically you may visit the shrines all year long (albeit not in the same locations)

Badrinath closed for winters 2011

How to get there

In order to embark upon the Chota Char Dham Yatra, you’ll need to reach Haridwar. Here’s how.

Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun is the nearest airport. In fact, from here, you may even take up a Helicopter service to Kedarnath and Badrinath. These are available from Delhi, Dehradun, Phata, Augustmuni and Gauchar near Rudraprayag and Dehradun.

Rishikesh, Haridwar, Kotdwar and Dehradun are well connected to major cities of India by Railway Network. From here you can get bus or you can hire taxi as well towards your onwards journey.

Gangotri and Yamunotri Closed for Winters 2011-12

Char Dham Yatra Route

As per the Hindu Mythology, the auspicious and ever-so-important Yatra should be undertaken from west to east, in order to cover the holy places in a clockwise manner. Thus, it means that you should start off your pilgrimage from Yamunotri, then proceed to Gangotri, Kedarnath and finish your journey at Badrinath.

About the Char Dham Yatra

While the journey is a beautiful one, I want to highlight the importance of each of the shrines.

Yamunotri Dham

The original source of Yamuna River, Yamunotri is surrounded by stunning high forested peaks and a large valley. Yamuna is known to be the second largest and one of the holiest river in India after Ganga. As per the Hindu mythology, it is believed that Yamuna is the daughter of Surya (God of Son) & the sister of Yama (God of Death).

It is believed that you will be washed of your sins when you visit Yamunotri. Given the tough journey, faith, and transcendent significance of the river motivates the pilgrims to their destination. Distinctive features of Yamunotri include hot springs where raw rice is cooked and turned into prasad. Also, there many holy shrines, ashrams and temples in and around the Dham.

Yamunotri is located at an altitude of 3293 mts, in the Garhwal region and situated about 40 km away from Barkot in Uttarkashi. While the actual source of Yamuna lies in the Yamunotri Glacier, at an elevation of 6,387 mts near Bandarpunch Peaks.

Other places of interest nearby include Surya Kund, Divya Shila, Janki Chatti, Hanuman Chatti, Saptarishi Kund Lake etc.

History and Importance of Yamunotri

The temple at Yamunotri is dedicated to goddess Yamuna. It should be noted that the main Deity of the temple is made up of Black marble. Built by Maharani Gularia of Jaipur in the 19th century, the current temple was created after the previous one was destroyed by climate activity.

The Yamunotri Shrine was originally constructed by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal on left seashore of Yamuna River.

Gangotri Dham

Unarguably the most important river for Hindus, Ganga is the most sacred river in the world. Gangotri is one of the origin sources of Ganga (Ganges). It should be noted here that the foremost source of the river is “Gaumukh” – a glacier located 19 km from the Gangotri temple.

Dheeraj Sharma

Dheeraj Sharma

Gangotri is located on the banks of Bhagirathi river at an altitude of 3100 mts. Gangotri is the starting point of Ganga. It should be noted that the river Bhagirathi attains the name Ganga from Devprayag. This is where Bhagirathi meets with Alaknanda to form Ganga.

Gangotri Temple Inside

The temple opens on the auspicious day of Akshay Tritiya (usually in the month of May) and closes down on Yama Dwitiya or Bhai Duj (usually falling in October/ November).

Ganga water is the purest form of blessing and is used in Poojas (prayers) or offering in temples. In fact, pilgrims carry the auspicious water from here as a way to carry Prasad and blessings for future prayers.

Gangotri is the home place of many varieties of flora and fauna. There are several temples in Gangotri where visitors can learn the history behind the creation of Ganga River.

History and Importance of Gangotri Temple

As per Hindu Mythology, Ganga was born as a result of prize given Shivji to king Bhagirath for his penance. However, owing to her superiority as well as the fact that Earth would be overwhelmed if Ganga came down in full force, Shivji caught her in his locks.

Cost or Budget of Spiti Valley Trip

There is a sacred stone near the Gangotri temple that denotes the place where Ganga first came down to earth in the river form. This is why Ganga is also called by the name of Bhagirathi (i.e. the daughter of Bhagirath).

The Gangotri temple in its present form was constructed by Gorkha Commander Amar Singh Thapa in the 18th Century. It is believed that at the time of construction of the current temple, the Gaumukh glacier was present here – however it has receded to its current location due to global warming and climate change.

Kedarnath Dham

One of the most sacred pilgrimages in India, Kedarnath temple is located on the bank of Mandakini river at an altitude of 3584 mts. Historically, this region was known as “Kedar Khand”. Kedarnath temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Shivji in India.

Flanked by breathtaking snow-capped peaks, Kedarnath is the most remote locations on the Char Dham Yatra. The town itself is stunningly beautiful and the scenic beauty tends to attract a lot of pilgrims, with huge crowds flocking the region in the summer months of May and June. Also, the Kedarnath trek is quite famous amongst the trekker tribe.

It should be mentioned here that the 2013 floods did huge damage to the region. In fact, the fact that the temple is still standing has been the source of massive reverence. Prior to the 2013 floods, Gaurikund was the last destination on Kedarnath route, but with the floods in 2013, a new trekking route is under process.

This route will be approximately 21 kms of trekking, which will either start from Sonprayag or Sitapur. As of now, helicopter is the best way to reach Kedarnath temple.

Char Dham Yatra 2011 Begins

Currently, only accommodation near the dham are campsites due to the excessive damage from the floods.

In terms of thingy to do nearby, you may visit Chorabari tal (Gandhi Sarovar), Vasukital, Gaurikund, Trijuginarayan, Ukhimath, Panch Kedar, Madmaheshwar, Tungnath, Chopta, DeoriaTal and Rudranath etc.

History and Importance of Kedarnath Temple

Dedicated to incarnations of Shivji, Kedarnath is named after King Kedar, a ruler from Satya Yuga. This is the place where Shivji is said to have absolved the Pandavas from killing their own cousins Kauravas in the Mahabharata.

In fact, there is an interesting story behind the town and its temple. According to the Puranas, the Pandava brothers did a major penance in Kedarnath to please Shivji.

Earlier the temple was built by Pandavas and Present temple was built by Adi Shankaracharya. Just Behind the temple you will see samadhi of Adi Shankaracharya.

Badrinath Dham

Badrinath is an important holy shrine for Vaishnavites and is one of the 108 divya desams incarnation of Vishnuji. Also, Badrinath the town is part of Panch Badri temples which include Yog Dhyan Badri, Bhavishya Badri, Adi Badri and Vriddha Badri, along with Badrinath temple.

And, Badrinath is situated at an altitude of about 3415 mts in the Chamoli District of Uttarakhand. Located in Silent valley of Garhwal, Badrinath lies on the shores of Alaknanda river. The town is known for its stunning beauty, pleasant weather, thick forest cover as well as the beautiful views of snow clad mountains along the holy river flowing through the surrounding green valley.

Badrinath is the home to many celebrations including Kedar-Badri Utsav, Janam-ashtami, Mata Mruti Ka Mela. Nearby places that should be visited include Panch Prayag temple, Badhri Naryanan Temple, Vasudhara Falls, Hot Geyser (tapt kunds or hot water springs), Bheem Pul, Mana Village etc.

Badrinath

History & Importance of Badrinath Temple

The original Badrinath temple was built Adi Shankaracharya, who initially discovered the Badrinarayan idol in the Alakananda River. It was he who moved the shrine into the hot water springs of Tapt Kund. Due to natural time taking course, there was a need for a new temple to be built.

The Present temple was built by King of Garhwal in 16th century. The stunning ornament stones, traditional carving, pillar designs will take your breath away at the first look! In terms of the architecture, the appearance is similar to the Buddhist Vihara temple.

In the Satya yuga, Shivji meditated here for thousands of years while Goddess Lakshmi provided shadow over her husband in the form of a Badri tree. So, this is how the place for its name for Badrinath!

In fact, the entire valley surrounding Kedar-Badri was said to be the home of Shivji. This is the reason Badrinath becomes a main-stay around Mahashivratri when the festival is celebrated with full pomp-and-circumstance.

Itinerary for the Chota Char Dham Yatra

Day 1: delhi to haridwar.

Start your journey towards Haridwar from Delhi, covering 210 KMs in 6 hours’ worth of driving time. I would suggest reaching Haridwar as early as possible. This will leave you ample time to explore one of the holiest places in India – the gateway to the God and one of the oldest living world cities.

One of the MUST DO things (apart from exploring the many lanes and paths of the city) includes the magic of the evening Aarati (worship with fire) wherein all lamps are lit and prayers are offered at the Har ki Pauri (Steps of God). For Hindus, a dip in the auspicious Ganges leads to a washing off of all sins and a source of attaining liberation from the endless cycle of death and rebirth.

Day 2: Haridwar to Barkot

Start your day off as early as possible and after a dip in Ganga, you start your journey towards the first dham – Yamunotri – daughter of Surya & sister of Yam. Today’s travel towards Barkot will take you about 10 hours, covering 200 KMs.

Barkot is situated at an elevation of 1220 mts. Do remember to explore the little hamlet, even though the journey of your day today would be quite long. Modern civilization has not quite touched the place and you’ll be drawn in by the rituals and the ways of the city.

The surrounding views are insanely mesmerizing and include peaks of Bandar Punch that are snow-capped throughout the year. I suggest this as an overnight stop on your way to Yamunotri to keep you fresh and feeling alive throughout the journey! The views will forever be embedded in your memories, trust me.

Day 3: Barkot / Yamunotri/ Barkot

After an early breakfast, you’ll start your journey towards the first dham in earnest. With 36 KMs of driving along with a 7 KM trek, you’ll reach Yamunotri in around 5 hours today. If you plan on hiring a horse or a Doli, that will cost you anywhere from INR 1000 – 2500.

However, do note these rates may vary depending on when in season you visit and the number of tourists at that particular time.

Stunning Beauty of Uttarakhand

Yamunotri was the home of sage, Asit Muni. Yamuna is the daughter of the Surya (God of Sun) and Sarayyu. Her brother is Yama (God of Death). It is believed that Yama would not torment any individual at the time of death who bathes in Yamuna, his sister. It is Yamuna, holder of infinite love and compassion, who can grant us freedom from even death, in the realm of her elder brother.

How to tackle water-crossings on Ladakh Bike Trip / Spiti Valley Bike Trip? [20 Important Tips]

After having visited the shrine and nearby places, you’ll return to Barkot for your onward journey.

Day 4: Barkot / Gangotri

This day begins with an early morning as well. If you’re not completely fit – you might feel fatigued from the previous day’s journey. Hence, I do recommend you get to bed early to get full night’s rest for your day today!

Today’ you’ll be covering 210 KMs in about 9 hours’ worth of driving time. Do remember to take breaks. I particularly recommend stopping over at Gangnani – a hot water spring enroute. If you learn by 6 AM, you should hope to arrive at Gangotri by 3:30 PM.

Today is the day you visit your 2nd Dham, Gangotri, the origin of Ganga and seat of the goddess Ganga. The origin of the holy river is at Gaumukh, set in the Gangotri Glacier, and is a 19 km trek from Gangotri.

According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Ganga took the form of a river to absolve the sins of King Bhagirath’s predecessors, following his severe penance to Shivji spanning several centuries.

There is no other river as closely associated with Hinduism as Ganga. Respected since time immemorial as THE spiritual purifier, giver of health and prosperity – Ganga is part of the country’s religious fabric.

Visiting Gangotri is truly among the most blessed experiences of a Hindu’s life; and as uplifting and inspiring for any traveler.

Day 5 – Gangotri /Uttarkashi

Today, you may start your journey relatively leisurely. Waking up in Gangotri is an experience unto itself and should be treated as such. There are not many places where you feel peace quite like you’d here!

Today, after taking in the experience as much as you can – you start your journey towards Uttarkashi. Uttarkashi literally translates to the Banaras (i.e. Kashi) of the North. Today’s journey will take you 4 hours to cover 95 KMs.

Uttarkashi, a small town at an elevation of 1588 mts, is situated between Varuna and Ashi rivers. These rivers slow into the Bhagirathi from either side of the town. Given its similarities to Kashi – the city enjoys similar ghats and temples like the city it is named after.

When you’re here, do remember to visit the Vishwanath Temple, dedicated to Shivji. Other temples you must visit include Annapurna Temple and Bhairav Temple. Also, it is believed that in the second millennium of Kaliyug (the current ongoing yuga), Kashi (i.e. Banaras) will be submerged, and Uttarkashi will replace it as an important religious centre.

Day 6: Uttarkashi / Sitapur

Another day when you will have an early wakeup call & breakfast. Today you’ll be reaching your destination of Sitapur, covering 212 KMs worth of journey in around 10 hours of driving time. Sitapur is situated at an elevation of roughly 1820 mts, just 7 kms from Gaurikund and 26 kms from Guptkashi.

Sitapur is situated only 2 kms from Son Prayag, lying at the confluence of Basuki and Mandakini rivers. It is said that a mere touch of the holy water from this holy site of Son Prayag helps the individual to attain the “Baikunth Dham”.

Another religiously important location is the Triyuginarayan – the marriage place of Lord Shiva and Parvati. This is situated at a distance of 14 kms by bus and 5 kms on foot from here.

In order to reach Kedarnath – you’ll be trekking from here. However, do remember to bathe in the hot water pond here and visit the Gauri Devi temple. This is the place where Goddess Parvati meditated to attain Lord Shiva.

Day 7: Sitapur/ Gaurikund/ Kedarnath

Today is going to be a long day with lots of physical activity! After an early breakfast you’ll proceed to Gaurikund, taking you two hours of driving time. Do remember to pack lunch and carry sufficient water for the day today.

From Gaurikund, you will start your trekking in earnest. Overnight, you’ll be staying in Kedarnath (mostly camping accommodations are available since the destruction of 2013 floods). Overall, you’ll be covering 32 Kms from Sitapur to Gaurikund by driving and then another 14 KMS of trek. This entire journey will take you about 9 hours in total.

The third dham is possible the remotest dhams you’ll be covering. Located in Shivji’s own home – the shrine is majestic and the natural setting is breath-taking.

From the towering mountains covered in snow, the plummeting streams and rivers, and lush green meadows and forests — and the arduous trek that gets you to it, serve to further cement the deep-rooted faith that this temple inspires!

This site is almost unchanged for centuries and has a spiritual energy of its own! For the devotees of Shivji, this is the last frontier, the ultimate path to salvation!

For the trekking part a Horse & doli are both decent options in case you’re unable to manage the trek. The cost ranges from INR 1000 to 2500. Though these rates are subject to change dependent on the number of pilgrims and the time of your journey during the season.

Day 8: Kedarnath / Rudraprayag

Today, you’ll be moving from Kedarnath to Rudraprayad after an early morning breakfast at Gaurikund. Today’s journey will be 75 KMs along with a 14 Km trek. You should reach Gaurikund by 11 AM and Rudraprayad at 3:30 PM, if you leave from Kedarnath around 6 AM. You will be stopping at Sitapur for lunch.

What we know as Garhwal today was earlier known as the Kedar-Khand in the past. In fact, Puranas will tell you that Kedar-Khan is the abode of God. The scriptures of Ramayana and Mahabharata were scripted here.

Also, named after Shivji (Rudra), Rudraprayag is situated at the holy confluence of Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers, at a distance of 34 kms from Srinagar (Garhwal, UK).

This confluence is particularly beautiful as if the two sisters are embracing each other! Here, it is believed that Narad Muni worshipped Shivji – who appeared here in his Rudra Avatar (incarnation) to bless Narad. The complete area is blessed with enormous natural splendor, places of sacred prominence, lakes and glaciers.

Day 9: Rudraprayag/ Badrinath

Not as early as yesterday – you’ll start your journey towards your final dham – Badrinath. After breakfast, you’ll be travelling a distance of 160 KMs, taking you around 8 hours of driving time to cover the distance! Ensure you leave early enough to reach Badrinath in time for evening Darshan and Pooja at the temple.

Badrinath and its route is a journey of beginning. The pilgrims visiting the spine always mention that the landmarks and vistas continually deliver a fresher view, a diverse feeling, an additional nuance to an experience.

It is said that this is the toughest leg of the journey and often times, it can be unforgiving, but only to a closed minded person. The journey from Rishikesh to Badrinath, as Sir Edmund Hillary rightfully noted in his expeditions, is, in many ways, a journey from the ocean to the sky, as much mental as physical. And another route to heaven – and spiritual liberation.

Day 10: Badrinath / Birhi

Coming to a close for your spiritual awakening – you’ll have a leisurely morning wakeup call and only depart post lunch for Birhi. Today’s journey is 95 KMs, taking you 5 hours to complete.

4 Ways of Adventure Bathing in Rishikesh – 2

Day 11: Birhi/Rishikesh

After breakfast at Birhi, proceed to Rishikesh. This journey will take you 160 KMs and 7 hours to complete.

It will be a brilliant idea to also explore Rishikesh while you’re here. Situated in the foothills of Himalayas, has some of the most pleasing views as well as the most soul calming vibes!

With Ganga spreading the happiest of emotions around – Rishikesh truly is one of the most mesmerizing places in the country. Do remember that Rishikesh is a vegetarian city by law, as well as an alcohol-free city.

In terms of places to visit – do remember to check out the oh-so-famous Laxman Jhulla, Ram jhulla and several ghats in and around this holy town.

Day 12: Rishikesh/Delhi

Head on back to your original location! Carry the peace, tranquility and happiness with you for a long time! The peace is quite like no other!

Uttarakhand Char Dham Yatra Essential Guide

Pilgrimage to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath Temples

char dham yatra trip card

After the snow clears at the foothills of the Himalayas in late April, Hindu pilgrims start flocking to the four ancient temples known as Char Dham. Located high up in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand , these temples mark the spiritual source of four holy rivers: the Yamuna (at Yamunotri), the Ganges (at Gangotri), the Mandakini (at Kedarnath), and the Alaknanda (at Badrinath). Hindus consider visiting the Char Dham to be very auspicious. Not only is it believed to wash away all sins, it will also ensure release from the cycle of birth and death. There are a number of options for going on a Char Dham yatra (journey).

Char Dham Yatra Overview

The Char Dham are only open at certain times of the year from late April or early May to November. May and June is the peak pilgrimage period. The monsoon season (July to September) can quite dangerous as the rain makes the route slippery.

How Can the Char Dham be Reached?

A Char Dham yatra isn't easy. Pilgrims really need to earn the benefits bestowed, as only two of the temples (Badrinath and Gangotri) are accessible by vehicle. The remaining two (Yamunotri and Kedarnath) require treks. Kedarnath has the lengthiest trek. It takes around 10-12 days to visit all the temples. However, it's now possible to cover all the temples in two days by helicopter.

To help ensure the safety of pilgrims, a medical checkup has been introduced for those trekking to Kedarnath temple. Special checkup points are provided en-route for this. In addition, all pilgrims going on the Char Dham Yatra must complete biometric registration. It can be done online here or at designated registration centers in Uttarakhand. There will be regular weather updates provided along the route, as well as telecommunication network coverage, mobile medical facilities, and a control room.

Where are the Char Dham Located?

  • Badrinath and Gangotri -- are both directly reachable by road from Haridwar , Rishikesh , Kotdwar, and Dehradun.
  • Yamunotri -- the trek starts from Janki Chatti, 225 kilometers (140 miles) from Rishikesh .
  • Kedarnath -- the trek starts from Gaurikund, 207 kilometers (130 miles) from Rishikesh .

Are there any Tour Packages?

Although it's not difficult to make your own travel arrangements for a Char Dham yatra, there are plenty of Char Dham packages available as well. Two options are:

  • Government-operated Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam organizes package tours by bus every year from May to November. There are plenty of options from seeing only one temple to all four temples. It's possible to include the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib too. Most tours depart from Rishikesh but some leave from Haridwar or Dehradun, depending on the itinerary. The shortest tour is four nights and the longest is 11. Tours are priced from around 10,000 rupees per person. Some have shared accommodations and bathroom.
  • If you'd prefer a more upmarket option, Leisure Hotels has set up luxury Chardham Camps at each of the sites and offers various package deals .
  • Pilgrim Aviation is a reputable private company that offers helicopter tour packages.

Prefer to Go Your Own Way and Want More Information?

The temples are usually visited in clockwork direction, from west to east. This means you should see them in the following order: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath. Haridwar or Rishikesh are the starting points for transportation.

What is the Situation After the 2013 Flood At Kedarnath?

Substantial repair and reconstruction works have been carried after the flash flood in Uttarakhand, which caused extensive devastation and loss of life in the area around Kedarnath temple. This has made the trek much safer and more comfortable for pilgrims.

Nehru Institute of Mountaineering has repaired the damaged stretch of track from Gaurikund to Rambara and made a new track from Rambara to Kedarnath. In addition, accommodation and sanitation facilities have been improved. There are resting points, toilets, tea stalls, medical facilities, police stations, and State Disaster Response Force patrols on the route. Emergency helipads have been constructed in various locations, and an early warning alarm system has been installed to provide alerts about any disasters on the route and around the lake there.

How to Visit Badrinath Temple

Badrinath temple is the most accessible and thus most popular of the Char Dham. You'll find this temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, surrounded by a rather untidy village and overshadowed by the towering, snow-topped, Nilkantha peak.

When is Badrinath Temple Open?

The opening date is decided by priests on Basant Panchami in February, while the closing date is decided on  Dussehra . Generally, the temple remains open for around 10 days after Diwali . The opening date for 2021 has been announced as May 18.

How Can Badrinath Temple be Reached?

Read more about Badrinath temple and how to visit it in this complete guide.

How to Visit Gangotri Temple

The simple shrine of Gangotri temple has special significance for Hindu pilgrims. It's considered to be one of the holiest places in India as it's regarded as the spiritual source of the ever powerful Ganges River. Set amidst rugged mountains and forest, Gangotri attracts almost 300,000 pilgrims a year. Every evening towards 8 p.m., an aarti (worship with fire) is held at the temple.

When is Gangotri Temple Open?

Gangotri temple opens on a set day every year. This falls on Akshaya Tritiya (an auspicious day in the Hindu calendar), in the last week of April or first week of May.  In 2021, Gangotri will open on May 14. The occasion features a traditional procession of the Goddess Ganga back from her winter home at Mukhyamath temple in Mukhba village, 20 kilometers (12 miles) downstream. The temple closes on Diwali every year, and the Goddess returned to Mukhyamath temple.

How Can Gangotri Temple be Reached?

Gangotri is most popularly reached from Rishikesh (12 hours away) via Uttarkashi (six hours away). It's possible to take a bus or jeep to get there. Guesthouses and a GMVN Tourist Bungalow provide accommodations for those who want to stay.

Trekking to the Actual Source of the Ganges River

If you don't mind a strenuous trek, you can actually go to where the Ganges River emerges from a glacier above Gangotri. The actual source is an ice cave called Gaumukh (meaning Cow's Mouth), 18 kilometers (11 miles) up. Three days are required to complete the return trek, with around six hours of trekking a day. You can stay in a dormitory at a GMVN Tourist Bungalow along the way at Bhojbasa. It's situated around six hours from Gangotri and three hours from Gaumukh.

How to Visit Yamunotri Temple

The Yamunotri temple lies close to the source of the Yamuna River, the second holiest river in India, which flows all the way down past the Taj Mahal . The temple is relatively undeveloped as it's the least visited of the Char Dham. However, there is a certain magic to be experienced from the pristine mountain air, running water, natural scenic beauty, and enthusiastic devotees. Pilgrims also get to enjoy a number of hot water springs in the vicinity of the temple.

When is Yamunotri Temple Open?

The same as Gangotri temple, Yamunotri temple opens every year on Akshaya Tritiya (an auspicious day in the Hindu calendar). It falls in the last week of April or first week of May. In 2021, it is on May 14. The temple also closes for the season on Diwali. On the day the temple opens, the Goddess is carried from the nearby village of Kharsali (said to be Yamuna's mother's home), installed in the temple, and duly returned when the temple closes.

How Can Yamunotri Temple be Reached?

The route by road is Haridwar/Rishikesh-Dehradun-Mussoorie-Naugaon-Barkot–Hanuman Chatti. The journey to the village of Hanuman Chatti, which is around 14 kilometers from the Yamunotri temple, takes around eight hours from Rishikesh and six hours from the hill station of Mussoorie . From there, it's necessary to take a shared taxi (departures every few minutes) to Janki Chatti. Your trek starts there! It's only 5 kilometers (3 miles) to the Yamunotri temple, via Kharsali, but it's a very steep and and in some parts narrow climb. As a result, people usually take around two hours to cover the distance and it really helps if you take a locally available walking stick. If you find you don't want to walk, there are mules and men to help carry you.

Basic guesthouses and GMVN Tourist Bungalows provide accommodations at Yamunotri, Janki Chatti, and Hanuman Chatti. If you stay the night at Yamunotri, you'll be able to witness the evening aarti (worship with fire) there.

Is it Possible to See the Actual Source of the Yamuna River?

The origin of the Yamuna River is a frozen lake and glacier located around a kilometer above the temple. Unless you have mountaineering skills, the climb isn't advised though. It's a very difficult one.

How to Visit Kedarnath Temple

The most remote and holiest of the Char Dham, although Kedarnath temple requires effort to get to, it still draws more than 100,000 pilgrims a year. This is because it's considered to be the seat of Lord Shiva and the most important of the 12 Jyotirlingas (large lingas /shrines to Shiva) in India. It's an impressive temple too -- perhaps the largest and most magnificent one in the Himalayas. Situated high up in Lord Shiva's territory, it occupies a glacial terrace leftover from a long ago melted glacier, in the Mandakini Valley.

When is Kedarnath Temple Open?

The opening date is decided by priests on Maha Shivaratri in late February or early March each year. In 2021, it will open on May 17. The temple closes the day after Diwali each year.

How Can Kedarnath Temple be Reached?

The route to Kedarnath starts off at Rishikesh and heads in the same direction as to Badrinath, but branches off at Rudraprayag (where connections are available). The destination is Gaurikund, 14 kilometers (9 miles) from Kedarnath. The whole journey from Rishikesh takes around 12 hours by bus or jeep. Then, from Gaurikund, it's a grueling uphill trek to the temple. Expect it to take around six hours. The stunning scenery of the Mandakini River along the way helps though! Those who don't feel up to walking can opt to take a pony, which will reduce the duration of the trek by an hour. There are porters available to help carry luggage as well.

Alternatively, Kedranath temple is also accessible by helicopter! The Uttarakhand government provides services departing from various locations and online bookings can be made here . Other options are Pawan Hans Helicopters Ltd (owned by the Indian government) and private company Pilgrim Aviation . A one way trip only takes 15 minutes.

Where to Stay?

In terms of accommodations, basic GMVN Tourist Bungalows can be found at Gaurikund. Following the devastating 2013 flash flood, which destroyed infrastructure around the temple, the government has constructed tent colonies to accommodate pilgrims. New sanitation facilities, including toilets and bathrooms, have been added along with community kitchens.

How to Complete the Char Dham Yatra: A Step-by-Step Guide

Updated: Mar 24, 2023

char dham yatra trip card

Decorated with oak trees and a spotless environment, sanctifying the atmosphere with the rushing rivers Ganga and Yamuna, and glorifying with a concentration of holy sites. crowned as a throne by the beautiful Himalayan Mountain Peaks. You are in the Adobe of the Gods in Uttarakhand, after all. The phrase " Chardham Tour " in Uttarakhand, sometimes referred to as "Chota Char Dham," refers to touring four holy places simultaneously in this wonderful state. Remember that the four main Char Dhams in India are distinct from one another. East: Jagannath Puri; West: Dwarkadheesh; South: Rameshwaram; East: Badrinath.

Introduction of Char Dhams

The four holiest locations are dispersed over the sizable state of Uttarakhand, and pilgrimages to them make up the Chota Char Dham Yatra. The four shrines are Yamunotri, Gangotri, Badrinath, and Kedarnath. At Badrinath Dham, you will have a darshan while visiting one of the Dhams of Bada Char Dham. Because of Badrinath Dham's close proximity and importance to pilgrims, many visit all three sites in order to achieve Moksha. One of the most well-known and popular pilgrimages in India. These four pilgrimage locations were integrated into one spiritual circuit around the ninth century by the renowned Hindu scholar Adi Shankarcharya, which his followers have since followed as a tradition.

The final dates are announced on the auspicious day of Akshay Tritiya, with the Char Dham Yatra beginning in May and lasting till October. Each of the four Dhams has a different opening and closing date because of geographic and climatic variations. The primary Char Dham Tour, in contrast, is open throughout the year. We'll cover timings, the best route to take, travel arrangements means of transportation, local cuisine, the climate, and the top locations to see while on the journey in this in-depth guide to the Chardham Yatra in Uttarakhand.

All Right, Let's Begin!

The perfect time to do the char dham yatra.

Given that the Char Dham's entrance opens in May and is open until November, the optimum months to visit are May to June and Mid-August to November. Normally, July should be avoided because of the intense monsoons and their influence on the weather. You need to be ready since October and November may be really chilly. The best months to visit and make the most of Uttarakhand's beauty are May and June. Choosing the months after August can help you avoid crowds.

How to Reach Char Dham Destinations

The renowned Gateway to Char Dham is Haridwar, a serene city filled with ashrams, temples, and pilgrims. Every mode of transportation will get you from any Indian city to Haridwar.

char dham yatra trip card

The closest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun. Take a plane to get there, then from Dehradun or Haridwar, and continue your journey. You may easily go from Dehradun to Chardham via helicopter.

Rishikesh, Haridwar, Dehradun, Kotdwar, and Pathankot are just a few of the Uttarakhand cities with good train links to the rest of the nation. You may either reserve a taxi or a char Dham Yatra package from a travel agency in Haridwar or Dehradun to travel to all the locations.

You may reserve a bus for a round-trip journey from the surrounding cities of Delhi, Haridwar, Agra, Mathura, etc. to your chosen spot. The bus excursion package can be all-inclusive or customised based on your needs.

The importance of the Char Dham Yatra in Hindu pilgrimage.

Yamunotri Dham, the first dham of the Yatra and named for the goddess Yamuna, is claimed to be able to atone for all sins with a single holy bath. At Gangotri Dham , where it is believed to have descended directly from heaven, the River Ganga is considered to have its origins. Kedarnath Dham , one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, is revered. Lord Shiva is situated on the banks of the Mandakini River. Badrinath Dham, Shri Vishnu's abode, is a breathtaking site on the Garhwal River and is situated on the banks of the Alaknanda River.

Find out more about the Four Dhams

Before beginning the walk, let's get more in-depth information on each of the four Dhams.

Yamunotri Dham

Yamunotri Dham , home to the goddess Adobe Yamuna, is situated at a height of 3293 metres in the great Himalayas and is surrounded by stunning natural features including as snow-capped mountains, glaciers, and hot springs. Many worshippers travel there every year in their hundreds since it is the beginning point of the Char Dham Pilgrim Journey. The beginning point for the roughly 3-kilometer journey that pilgrims must make to get to the Temple is Janki Chatti. You may stroll, ride a pony or palanquin, or take the traditional three-hour bus ride to the Temple. Yamuna, Yama's sister, is a descendant of the Sun God. The main deity of the temple is sculpted from black marble.

According to devotee beliefs and Hindu mythology, the prasad of this sacred place is said to be raw rice cooked in Yamunotri's hot springs. Nearby Yamunotri attractions include Kharsali, Surya Kund, Divya Shila, Janki Chatti, Saptrishi Kund Lake, etc. The Yamunotri Temple opens on the auspicious day of Akshay Tritiya and closes on Yama Dwitiya.

Gangotri Dham

Many high-altitude hikes begin in Gangotri Dham , a shrine to the goddess Ganga. Uttarkashi serves as the gateway to the Temple, which has a stunning atmosphere and amazing views from every angle. The Ganges is said to have its origins in a place called Gaumukh, which is close to the Gangotri Glacier . Lord Shiva gave King Bhagirathi a gift as an act of penance, but because the Earth would be swept away by the Ganga's swift flow, he trapped it in her hair (jata) and let it out when the Earth moved slowly. After leaving Gaumukh, the river was given the name Bhagirathi. There are several places where people adore and worship the Ganga River. Starting from Haridwar, you may travel to Har Ki Pauri to attend Ganga Aarti.

They utilise the holy river water in Puja ceremonies and carry it with them as a blessing. In the vicinity of Gangotri , the most well-known sights are Pandava Gufa, Bhairon Ghati, Gauri Kund, Tapovan, and Kedartal. The Gangotri Temple opens on the auspicious day of Akshay Tritiya and closes on the eve of Diwali.

Kedarnath Dham

Kedarnath Temple, the home of Lord Shiva and one of India's twelve Jyotirlingas, is located beside Chorabari Glacier along the Mandakini River's bank at a height of 3580 metres. In the cool months of May and June, take in the most breathtaking views amidst snow-capped mountains. After huge flood of 2013 in the region, numerous new initiatives are underway in area to strengthen security against natural disasters. On the Kedarnath Trek, the starting locations are Sonprayag or Sitapur.

The temple was constructed with excellent architecture and is formed of slabs of grey stone with a strength that prevents it from being destroyed by powerful flooding. The Temple's mountainous backdrop includes the Kedarnath peak, Kedar Dome, and other Himalayan peaks, which pilgrims can see. According to ancient accounts, after defeating the Kauravas, the Pandavas felt sorry and sought forgiveness at the feet of Lord Shiva. At Kedarnath and the other four sites, Lord Shiva left humo before ultimately making his appearance. Panch Kedar is the collective name for these five places.

char dham yatra trip card

Nearby attractions to Kedarnath Dham include Sonprayag, Mount, Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi, Sumeru Parbat, Mayali Pass, and Vasuli Taal. Rock climbing, camping, and trekking are all possible activities in the area. The Kedarnath Temple opens on Akshay Tritiya, an auspicious day, and closes on Yama Dwitiya.

Badrinath Dham

For followers of the Vaishnav Dharm, the respected holy place of Badrinath , which is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is important. At a height of 3415 metres, Badrinath Dham is situated in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district. The Alaknanda River and the Garhwal Mountains, which are encircled by thick forest and snow-capped mountains, may be seen from the Dham in beautiful vistas.

The Dham begins operations a few days after Akshay Tritiya, and Vijaya Dashmi—which frequently falls in November—is used to determine the temple's closing times. A few attractions close to Badrinath Dham include the Vasudhara Waterfall, Satopanth Tal, Hemkund Sahib, Bheem Pul, Mana Village, Vyas Gufa, and Tapt Kunds. Hindu mythology states that Lord Shiva spent countless years here in meditation while Goddess Laxmi provided her spouse with protection in the form of a Badri tree.

Chardham Yatra: A Complete Guide (Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Chopta, Badrinath & Rishikesh)

Photo of Suraj Bajaj

There seem to be a million question marks hovering around the much revered Char Dham Yatra to be undertaken in the state of Uttarakhand. I had many until i planned it myself during the last Yatra season. It is overwhelming to plan everything all by yourself and is much more easy to outsource it to some travel agency blindly following their charted itinerary but its always better to explore your options at least on this particular journey.

The concern arises out of the mere fact that the journey is long (minimum 10 days) and the resources are limited to handle such huge influx of devotees during every Yatra season. Therefore a proper planning is needed to make the journey comfortable, smooth and economical.

Itinerary followed:

Day 1: Mumbai -Delhi (6 am flight) Reach Dehradun by 5 pm. (300 km- 7 hrs). Night stay at Ashok spa & Resort

Total 1500 km covered from Dehradun to Haridwar in 9 days

Night Stays- Dehradun, Sayanchatti, Uttarkashi (2), Phata , Kedarnath, Chopta, Badrinath, Joshimath, Rishikesh, Haridwar

Total cost for 4 people ~ 140000

Air Fare- 25000

Helicopter- 20000

Ground Transport- 30000

Hotel- 35000

Food/Miscellaneous- 27000

For starters i would recommend to fly in and out of Dehradun to reduce the unnecessary and unproductive travel from Delhi. But the lack of flight options and exorbitant airfares makes it very difficult to go for it. Nonetheless, Flying to Delhi and then getting a connecting cab or train is also fine. Remember if you opt for a road travel you can reach Dehradun anytime of the day with ample of options, where for the journey via train there are limited options for Dehradun as most of trains terminate at Haridwar. For us it was morning flight to Delhi and then a private cab till Dehradun. We decided to stay the night there and start early in the morning for Sayanchatti. I would suggest taking a evening flight to Delhi and and take the Nanda devi express which leaves around midnight from Hazarat Nizamuddin railway station to reach Dehradun early morning by 8 am. Now the advantage here is you can transfer directly to Mussoorie which a couple of hour ride to utilize the day for sightseeing and enjoy the evening at the queen of hills. Staying at Mussoorie also reduces the overall distance to be covered till Sayanchatti for the next. Now why Sayanchatti instead of Barkot? I will explain that later.

Syanachatti

Barkot is the last major town on the way to Yamuntori and hence is swarming with tourists with sub standard options for stay. A better option to halt for the night is Sayanchatti which a much less crowded and a beautiful town located some 20 km before Yamunotri on the banks of river Yamuna. It is the best place to relax and rejuvenate in the lap of nature.

Photo of Syanachatti by Suraj Bajaj

A 6 km trek to Yamunotri temple is steep and challenging. The trail is a unevenly paved often slippery due to the narrow water streams running across the path from the mountain. There are numerous pony and palki services available at very competitive prices if you bargain. It shouldn't cost more than a 1000 bucks per person on a pony to and fro Yanunotri Temple. In the months of April & May it may even be as high as 5000 pp depending upon the availability another reason to plan your trip near fag end of the Yatra season. As i mentioned, the trek is not a casual walk and would test your stamina and endurance. Although, i finished it at the same time on foot with my family walking adjacent to me on the ponies, i was struggling at certain patches where the trail tuns into an almost 60 degree inclined climb for a considerable distance. The hot water springs at the top are the boon for devotees reaching on foot as it relaxes your aching muscles and gets the mind ready for the descent. In my opinion, apart from the religious sentiments attached the trail is hardly scenic and interesting as compared to the others in the Himalayas. It's a closed valley with negligible openings for mountain view and carrying bleak prospects to enjoy an occasional breeze. It should not take more than 6 hrs (to and fro) for the trek and one can reach Uttarkashi before sundown if manage to start the day early as we did.

Photo of Yamunotri by Suraj Bajaj

Uttarkashi is the base town for the Gangotri yatra however i would definitely suggested to spend the night in Gangotri itself which offers descent means of accommodation. The valley is surprisingly untouched and pristine as compared to others on the Yatra route. Harsil valley on the way is an all season hidden gem overlooking the Bhagirathi river. The roads are spellbinding moving along the river approaching the snow capped Himalayas with enchanting valley views. The journey is refreshing with a couple of pit stops on the way to Gangotri. Dharali village provide better breakfast and refreshment options. The temple premises are blissful and one can spend hours sitting beside the river bed soaking sun and enjoying the fresh mountain breeze.

Photo of Gangotri by Suraj Bajaj

This day is a long transit day to reach Phata, Guptkashi. Phata is the base village for all the helicopter service to Kedarnath. The trek route for Kedarnath start from Sonprayag (Gaurikund) 20 km further ahead of Phata.

There are numerous private operators providing to and fro helicopter services to Kedarnath temple. The last year's 2 way fare fixed by the state government was 4900 pp. The best operator according to the word of mouth is UT Air and the worse is Indocopters, whose services we availed. A bunch of understaffed morons running the show with minimal resources. We waited for an average 6 hours both ways even after getting a designated slot. It takes maximum 15 minutes from Phata to reach kedarnath. Those 15 minutes were the most memorable ones of the entire journey. The chopper literally goes past the clouds traversing between the mountains providing mesmerizing view of the Kedar valley and the accompanying Mandakini river. Within a span of 15 minutes, the elevation increases by roughly 2000 mt and inversely the temperature drops by at least 10 degrees Celsius. After reaching we waited at the helipad to get acclimatize to the sudden change of terrain and weather. It is hence advised to not rush immediately as you land and give it some time to let your breathing pattern get accustomed to the elevation. The air here is dangerously thin and cold making you gasp for breath even after brisk walking for hardly 100 mts. We checked into Swargrohini Cottages, a premium one among all the other accommodations in Kedarnath. The accommodation has individual Cottages with 6 beds at 750 rs per bed. We booked all the 6 beds to get an entire cottage to ourselves for 4 people at 4500 rs per night. We went straight for evening darshan after dropping the luggage at our cottage. The evening view of the temple was enchanting as the kedar dome behind the temple glittered like gold under the last light of the day. The evening aarti was magical enough to make an atheist believe in god. The place went below the freezing point as the night started to creep in. Just before the midnight, i ventured out to catch a glimpse of the deserted ancient religious symbol. The sight was unquestionably unique to be sketched in my memory for the lifetime. The mountains behind the temple were shining white in the moonlight and the temple itself was illuminating under the artificial yellow lights. For a while after clicking some memorable shot, i resorted to my accommodation as the cold become almost unbearable.

Photo of Kedarnath, Uttarakhand, India by Suraj Bajaj

This day was entirely for the transit except for the Ganga aarti at Triveni ghat. It was a blissful evening seeing the vintage Laxman Jhula all light with a themed decoration. An equally satisfactory dinner at the nearby eatery.

Photo of Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India by Suraj Bajaj

Onward flight to Mumbai.

Some observations and suggestions:

1) Late October just before the Kapat band ceremony (closing of the high altitude temples during the harsh winter conditions) is the best time to undertake the Yatra owning to minimal tourist activity facilitating better resource availability

2) Mussoorie for Haridwar, Sayanchatti for Barkot and a day in Harsil/Gangotri instead of Uttarkashi should be given a thought if possible. I am sure it would a very different experience diverging from the usual Yatra path

3) Should break the tiring journey from phata to Badrinath at Chopta, it is really an unique experience. Though Chopta itself demands attest 3 days to explore the vicinity

4) Rishikesh should ideally be the last stop instead of Haridwar (not much to look out for) as offers the opportunity to explore white water river rafting and other adventure sports.

5) Don't get overwhelmed by the pony/palki vendors. Bargain till the last breath as there is always scope to save some extra bucks. For example we were quoted Rs. 2500 per pony and we ended up paying Rs. 800 plus added tips

6) keep an eye out for the helicopter booking commencement. It's the hottest selling commodity during the Yatra season. Even though there is a fixed fare determined by the government, the tickets from the back door sources sells as high as 3x the amount

7) A night stay at Kedarnath is must to completely soak in the divine energy of the place. Swargrohini cottages is the best option. A cottage contains 6 beds for 750 bucks each

8) The Himalayan Stag camps in Chopta treated us like at home. I would definitely endore them. Contact: Dharmendra 9756997985

9) We hired a private cab for 9 days journey with Shreya taxi, Dehradun. They are absolutely punctual and professionally sound operators. Ask for Guru ( our driver) if you decide to book with them. I inquired with numerous different agencies all across Haridwar and Dehradun but they had the best rates among all of them which didn't impact the high standards of service as one might imply

10) Fly in and out of Dehradun if possible, it would save at least a day and more importantly minimize the toll on your body due to the longer road journey

11) Don't miss out on the chance to take a dip in the hot springs, they are invigorating and helps with muscle relaxation

12) Kedarnath by trek is a long 16 km journey, start before sunrise if you want to make it before the dawn

13) Can't emphasize enough on carrying proper woolens even if you travel during the summer months. The nights are bone chilling any time of the year in the mountains

14) The helicopter services at Kedarnath provides the facility to carry only 2 kg of baggage along with you. Keep a smaller bag ready for that specific purpose if you wish to stay the night

Please get in touch for any further help and information, i will be more than happy to assist.

Our ride out of Kedarnath was deferred for almost 4 hrs in the morning. We took the opportunity to go get one last glimpse of the temple and the surroundings. We also took a half an hour hike to the Bhaironath temple located at an elevation on the right hand side of the peaks surrounding the temple. It gave us a birds eye view of the surrounding valley and the entire settlement around Kedarnath, a closer look at how this place has survived the flash floods of 2013 and resurrected from scratch after such a devastating calamity. I went for the Deoriatal trek on the way to Chopta while my family had their lunch at Sari village. It was a quick affair as i completed trek in 2 hrs including a half an hour stop at the top besides the lake. I couldn't spot the reflection of Chowkhamba in the lake as it was a rather cloudy day but the lake itself was beautiful and placid as always to warrant my attention and affection. We reached Chopta just before the dark and checked into The Himalayan stag camps in Baniyakhnd some 4 km before the start of the Tunganath-Chandrashilla trek. The camps were well managed by a very fine gentleman Dharmendra. It took care of all our needs and not to mention the delicious dinner he served in the midst of those remote mountains.

Photo of Chopta, Uttarakhand, India by Suraj Bajaj

We visited the temple early in the morning to avoid queues. The hot water spring in the temple premises which is usually quite soothing was shut down owning to a very high temperature making it unsuitable for human use. After this the plan was to trek till Vasundhara falls but looking at the paucity of time we limited out visit till Mana, the last Indian village on Indo-China border It's all out a tourist place offering sightseeing spots that charts out historical beliefs. It is also the only place on earth where one can spot the river, Sarawati before it vanishes into the ground. We left early afternoon from Badrinath for a night halt at Chamoli to break the long journey till Rishikesh.

Photo of Chamoli, Uttarakhand, India by Suraj Bajaj

This day was for leisure exploring nearby temples and other religious place in Haridwar. We took the cable car to Mansa Mata and Chandi Mata mandir located on two different hills opposite to each other separated by the river, Ganga. After witnessing the famous Ganga aarti at Har ki Pauri in the evening, we called it a early day to board a morning train to Delhi.

Photo of Haridwar, Uttarakhand, India by Suraj Bajaj

Chandrashila Trek

I started alone early for the Chandrashilla summit from the my camp quite early in the day. I took a shortcut till the actual spot from where the trek Tunganath officially starts and hence ended up sort of doing a mini unknown trek before the actual trek itself. The trail is well laid out with an easy to moderate level difficulty up till the Chandrashila peak. The accompanying vistas are enough to keep you engaged even if you are trekking solo. Numerous pony's tread along the path if one doesn't want to go on foot. It wasn't a clear day to spot the adjoining peak from Chandrashila as dark clouds began to crowd over the valley. I waited at the top to enjoy the shattering winds blowing across the peak. It was so peaceful until a group of noisy kids showed up as i decided to talk the walk back to the base. There are a lot of small eatery at the base which are an ideal option for a scrumptious lunch. I wondered all the good things Chopta alone has to offer for a wonderful mini vacation including a camp stay, an exciting trek and not to mention mind boggling hospitality. I waited for my ride towards Badrinath, one of four major Dham's according Indian mythology stories.

Char Dham Yatra Temples In Uttarakhand

There are four temples which comprise the Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand. Here is detailed information about each of the shrines:

1. Yamunotri Temple

Holy shrine dedicated

Yamunotri is a holy shrine dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, the source of River Yamuna. The temple is nestled in the mountains of the western region in Uttarakhand. Apart from the shrine, there are also two hot springs where trekkers and devotees take a dip to relieve fatigue. One is Surya Kund and the other one is named Gauri Kund. The only way to reach this temple is on foot. Trek from Hanuman ki Chhati or Janki Chhati. Horses and palanquins are also available.

Location: Yamunotri, Uttarkashi Road accessibility: No

2. Gangotri Temple

Banks of Bhagirathi River

Wait till you see the evening aarti at Gangotri Temple because there isn’t anything like it. Situated by the banks of Bhagirathi River, Gangotri Temple is where Lordess Ganga is worshipped. Just 18 km from the temple is the source of River Ganges – Gaumukh. The small town of Gangotri is centered around the temple. Surrounded by snow-clad mountains and river flowing by, the scenery of the temple is truly bewitching. Gangotri Yatra is not as difficult as Kedarnath Yatra and can be easily reached since the town is set around the temple itself.

Location: Gangotri, Uttarkashi Road accessibility: Yes

3. Kedarnath Temple

Lord Shiva by the banks of Mandakini

Nestled in the mountains of Garhwal, Kedarnath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva by the banks of Mandakini. Both the location and architecture of the temple are breathtaking. It is so fascinating to know how the structure of this centuries-old temple remains unaffected from the floods. The last road head is Gaurikund. From this point onwards, you will either have to take a pony (or a palanquin) or also trek 14 km long if you have the stamina. Char Dham Yatra

Char Dham Yatra – Travel Guide & Itinerary

As Char Dham temples are opened for pilgrims on Akshaya Tritiya day (April 18th, 2018), here is complete travel guide for Char Dham Yatra (Uttarakhand) along with detailed Itinerary. Also, explore the Char Dham tour package offered by Trawell.in for costing and a detailed tour plan.

Char Dham is referred to the four holiest pilgrimage sites in India that are widely revered by Hindus. These holy sites are Badrinath, Dwarka , Puri and Rameswaram situated in four different directions of India. The Char Dham defined by Adi Shankaracharya consists of three Vaishnavite and one Shaivite pilgrimage centers. The pilgrimage sites of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath in Uttarakhand were known as Chota Char Dham to differentiate them from the bigger circuit of Char Dham sites, but after the mid-20th century they have been also referred to as the Char Dham. Among four scared sites Kedarnath is dedicated to Lord Shiva while Badrinath is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. On the other hand, Yamunotri and Gangotri are dedicated to Goddess Ganga and Yamuna rivers respectively. It is considered highly sacred by Hindus to visit Char Dham during one’s lifetime. These four ancient temples also marks the spiritual source of four sacred rivers – Ganga(Gangotri), Yamuna (Yamunotri), Mandakini (Kedarnath) and Alaknanda (Badrinath).

Char Dham Yatra is one of the most popular pilgrimage routes, with millions of devotees paying a visit to all these religious places in aspiration of eliminating all sins and to attain salvation by the blessings of the Lord. The Char Dham must be visited from left to right – beginning with Yamunotri, going on to Gangotri, then Kedarnath and culminating the journey at Badrinath. This route follows the Hindu tradition of parikrama. Every year more than 250,000 pilgrims visit Char Dham from various parts of India. Char Dham – the four pilgrimages are open from May till October every year. All four sites can be covered in one stretch in 10-11 days. Nowadays, one can also get helicopter services to visit Char Dham sites in just 2 days.

Yamunotri, Uttarakhand

Yamunotri is one of the four sites of Char Dham pilgrimage situated in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. Yamunotri is the source of River Yamuna and is regarded as the seat of Goddess Yamuna. This is the western most shrine in the Garhwal Himalayas, situated at an altitude of 3293 m atop Bandar punch parvat.

The chief attraction at Yamunotri is the temple devoted to the Goddess Yamuna. It is surrounded by mountains on all sides. The temple was first built by Maharani Gularia of Jaipur in the early 19th century. The temple was damaged in the earth quakes of 1923 and 1982. But it was subsequently rebuilt by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal, who was the ruler of this region. Yamunotri Temple can be reached by 5 km trek from Janki Chatti which is the nearest road point. Janki Chatti , Kharsali , Saptarishi Kund , Barkot and Hanuman Chatti are the other attractions in Yamunotri. Yamunotri also has famous trekking routes, such as Hanuman Chatti – Yamunotri route, Dodi Tal and Janki Chatti.

The temple opens every year on the auspicious day of the Akshaya Tritiya, which generally falls during the last week of April, or early May. The temple closes on the sacred day of Diwali in October / November. Kharsali is the winter home to the idol of goddess Yamuna. The best time to visit Yamunotri is from May to June and September to October.

Gangotri, Uttarakhand

Gangotri, the origin of the River Ganges, is one of the four sites in the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit in Uttarakhand along with Badrinath, Kedarnath and Yamunotri. It is situated at an altitude of 3100 m in the Garhwal Himalayan Range on the banks of the holy Bhagirathi River. River Ganges originates at Gaumukh in Gangotri Glacier, which is located about 19 km away from Gangotri town. As per legends, Goddess Ganges took the form of a river in order to absolve the sins of King Bhagiratha’s ancestors, after his severe penance. Lord Shiva received River Ganges in his thick hair locks, to reduce the impact of her fierce flow.

Gangotri is famous for its ancient temples and religious significance. The present Ganga Temple at Gangotri was built by a Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa in the early 18th century. Near the temple is located a sacred stone where King Bhagiratha is said to have worshipped Lord Shiva. Surya Kund , Pandava Gufa , Bhaironghati and Gaumukh are the other religious attractions in Gangotri. Gangotri town is the starting point of the Gaumukh , Tapovan , Nandanvan , Vasuki Tal and Gangotri-Kedartal trekking.

Gangotri temple is opened from May and gets closed on the occasion of Diwali festival in Oct / Nov. Gangotri temple remains closed during winters as the region is prone to heavy snowfall. The idol is shifted to Mukhyamath Temple in Mukhba village, 20 km downstream.

Kedarnath, Uttarakhand

Kedarnath is a popular destination for Hindu pilgrims and is one of the four major sites in Uttarakhand known as Chota Char Dham pilgrimage. It lies at an altitude of 3584 m near Chorabari Glacier, the head of river Mandakini. It is the most remote of the four Char Dham sites and is flanked by breathtaking snow-clad peaks. The famous Kedarnath temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and is thronged by thousands of tourists each year. Other than Kedarnath temple, Bhairavnath temple , Chorabari Tal , Shankaracharya Samadhi , Vasuki Tal , Deoria Tal and Ukhimath are the some other religious places near Kedarnath.

Kedarnath can be reached by 14 km steep climb from Gaurikund to the temple of Kedarnath and can be done on foot or on ponies. Ponies or horses are available on rent from Gaurikund. After the flash floods of 2013 which greatly affected the Kedarnath region, the route has been modified. The 14 km trek is now of 21 km which starts from Sonprayag. A general health check-up is done to ensure the safety of the tourists before allowing them to go further after registration. From here a trek of 7 km takes place up to Bhim Bali, while the next halt is at Linchauli at another 7 km. The last halt is the Kedarnath temple after a trek of another 7 km. The original route from Gaurikund runs through Rambara (7 km) – Linchauli (4 km) – Kedarnath (3 km).

The extreme weather condition of Kedarnath prompts the temple to be open only for 6 months from the end of April to the beginning of November. The town receives heavy snowfall during the winter months which makes it uninhabitable. The residents of Kedarnath shift to villages lying at lower altitudes during the winter months while Lord Kedarnath’s Palki is transferred to Ukhimath.

Badrinath, Uttarakhand

Badrinath is the most important of the four sites of famous Char Dham pilgrimage; the other three being Puri , Dwarka and Rameswaram. It is also visited as part of Chota Char Dham Pilgrimage along with Kedarnath, Yamunotri and Gangotri in Himalayan region of Uttarakhand. According to the epic Mahabharata, Badrinath is the site where Nara and Narayana, the dual forms of Vishnu, did meditation. It is also believed that the Pandavas passed through Badrinath on their way to heaven. Legend has it that Sage Vyasa authored Mahabharata at a cave in Mana, which is about 4 km from Badrinath.

Badrinath is famous for its Badrinath Temple that houses Lord Badrinarayan, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The present temple is believed to have been established by saint-philosopher Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. Adi Shankara discovered a Saligram idol of Lord Badrinarayan in the river bed of Alaknanda. He installed this idol in a cave nearby Tapt Kund. It was later shifted to the present temple by the King of Garhwal in the 16th century. Badrinath is also famous for Panch Badri temples, which are Yog Dhyan Badri, Bhavishtya Badri, Adi Badri and Vriddha Badri, along with Badrinath temple. Some of the other attraction of Badrinath includes Tapt Kund , Brahma Kapal , Sheshanetra , Vasudhara Falls , Charan Paduka , Satopanth Lake , Neelkanth and Mana Village . Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, Nandaprayag , Vishnuprayag and Pandukeswar are among the other pilgrimage sites on the route to Badarinath.

The best time to visit Badrinath is from May to June and again from September to October. The monsoon months must be avoided as the region is prone to landslides. Tourists are advised not to visit during winters as the region receives heavy snowfall and harsh cold conditions. The Badrinath temple is closed from November to April.

FAQs about Chardham Tour Packages

Q. What are the opening and closing dates of the Chardham Yatra? A. Prior to going ahead and booking one of the Chardham packages, you need to ascertain what time of the year you are going to be travelling and whether or not the Chardham Yatra is open at that time of the year. Chotta Chardham comprises Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri, with the temples marking the sources of Hinduism’s four rivers - Ganga, Yamuna, Mandakini and Alaknanda. The Chardham Yatra remains open between April to the first half of November. Although the specific dates are announced by the state government of Uttarakhand annually and it states the opening and closing dates of the circuit. In the winter, the deities are moved to their winter abode such as Joshimath for Badrinath, Ukimath for Kedarnath, Mukhba for Gangotri and Kharsali for Yamunotri. These winter abodes stay open round the year and you can visit them in that season in case you cannot make it to Chardham within the stipulated period. Q. What is the significance of Gangotri in Chardham Yatra? A. As you go through Chardham tour packages, make sure you have enough time at Gangotri, the source of Hinduism’s holiest river, the Ganges. The holiest shrine in the country, the Gangotri Temple is greatly revered for being the source the Ganga River. Legend has it that the rock on the site acted like a shield to save the planet from the disaster the river could have otherwise wrecked as it poured out of Lord Shiva’s matted locks sitting in Mount Kailash. It is believed that Lord Shiva placed the rock in that position to stop the onslaught of the gushing waters. The temple was built in the 18 th century by Gorkha commander, Amar Singh Thapa. It is Gaumukh which is the original source of the Ganges, but the Gaumukh glacier is about 19 kilometre up ahead of the Gangotri Temple. The temple opens its doors on Akshay Tritiya usually in May and closes down on Bhai Dhuj in late-October or early-November. Pilgrims, believing in Ganga’s healing properties, take back bottles full of the holy water. There are several smaller shrines in the region, each home to a legend on the Ganges’ evolution that has its roots in mythology. Q. What route do you take on the Chardham Yatra? A. All Chardham holiday packages will mention in detail the route you would be taking on your tour of the pilgrimage circuit. Arrive in Haridwar from Delhi and then travel to Barkot. Barkot is the closest source of the Yamuna River, the Yamunotri, around 200 kilometre from Haridwar. Return to Barkot and now head towards Gangotri that is about 210 kilometre away. Proceed from Gangotri towards Uttarkashi, a scenic 95 kilometre drive. Continue to Sitapur from Uttarkashi that is around 212 kilometre away, and from there head to Gaurikund. Gaurikund would be the starting point of your 14 kilometre trek to the shrine of Kedarnath. After paying your respects at the Kedarnath Temple, continue to Rudraprayag that is about 75 kilometre away and from there proceed to Badrinath. Badrinath is about 160 kilometre from Rudraprayag. Visit the shrine and further arrive in Birhi, about 95 kilometre away. From Birhi Rishikesh is around 160 kilometres. Take a cab to get into Haridwar from Rishikesh and further to your onward destination. Q. Is Chardham yatra booking availabe in 2023? A. All vaccinated tourists will be allowed for Chardham Yatra from 14 May 2023. Q. What is the best time to go on a Chardham tour? A. The Chota Chardham circuit created in the 8th century by Adi Shankaracharya comprises Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. April to June is the best time to visit Chardham as the weather remains pleasant and you can do with some layering, although you would need sweaters after sunset as the temperatures drastically plummet. You must avoid a trip to Chardham in monsoon or winter when it gets very cold and the rains making the treks and hikes extremely treacherous. Q. Which are the places included in a Chardham trip? A. While the Chardham yatra involves Badrinath, Dwarka, Rameswaram and Puri, the Chota Chardham includes a visit to Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. Kedarnath being the abode of Lord Shiva, Badrinath that of Vishnu, Gangotri Temple near which is the source of the Ganga River and Yamunotri Temple, a temple built on a site which is close to the source of the Yamuna River. Q. What will be the route taken on a Chardham tour? A. You will begin from Haridwar and go to Barkot, Barkot is about 200 kilometre away and close to it is the source of Yamuna, Yamunotri. From Barkot, head for Gangotri which is 210 kilometre away. From Gangotri, visit Uttarkashi which is 95 kilometre away. From Uttarkashi, head out to Sitapur, about 212 kilometre away, and from there to Gaurikund, which is the starting point of your 14 kilometre trek to Kedarnath. Post your visit to Kedarnath, head to Rudraprayag which is 75 kilometre away and then to Badrinath which is 160 kilometre away. •      Book your Char Dham Yatra Package 2024 and enjoy your pilgrimage at a great price!

Tucked in the lap of the Himalayas, Char Dham temples are the spiritual epicentre for Hindus in India. Char Dham, a term coined by the prehistoric Hindu philosopher Shri Adi Shankaracharya, refers to the four abodes of God – Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. According to Hindu mythology, it is believed that the Pandavas visited all the four shrines to absolve their sins before embarking on their journey to heaven. Till date, as April arrives, millions of devotees gather in Uttarakhand to undertake the tough Chardham Yatra, believing that it can open their gates to salvation. After starting from the origin of river Yamuna, Yamunotri Dham, pilgrims head towards the renowned Gangotri shrine. Thereafter, they visit Shri Kedarnath Dham, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and finally end their holy journey at Shri Badrinath Dham, the only Dham sacred to Lord Vishnu. If you’re spiritually inclined and seeking a Char Dham tour to reconnect with God and fill your mind with spirituality, then pick any of the Chardham yatra package 2024 by MakeMyTrip.

Start your enlightening Chardham Yatra by seeking blessings at the sacred Yamunotri temple. Located amidst a picturesque green valley, Yamunotri is the place where the Yamuna originates. As per Hindu mythology, Yamuna is the twin sister of Yama (God of Death), one of the Ashtabharya of Krishna and daughter of Surya (the Sun God). Approachable by a six-kilometre trek from Janki Chatti, the holy town is mainly known for the sacred Gangotri Dham. The temple features a black marble statue of Goddess Yamuna, sitting beside the white stone idol of Goddess Ganga. Apart from the temple, you must include an excursion to Diyva Shila and hot water springs of Surya Kund and Gouri Kund in your Char Dham itinerary. Around a kilometre away from the main shrine is the Yamuna Glacier, located at an altitude of 6387 metre near the Bandarpunch peak in the Lower Himalayas. As per the legends, taking a dip in the streams flowing through Yamunotri Dham can absolve all your sins.

One of the 12 Jyotirlingas sacred to Lord Shiva and a part of the Char Dham and Panch Kedars (a group of 5 Shiva temples in Garhwal Himalayas) circuit, Kedarnath temple is an ancient holy temple. Many stories are associated with the origin of the temple. As per some of them, the temple was built by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th Century. Other versions claim that the Pandavas worshipped Lord Shiva at the same place where the temple presently stands, to seek forgiveness for killing their cousins during the great war of Kurukshetra. Made of large grey stones, the temple has a Garbha Griha and a Mandap decorated with figures of various deities. To visit the temple, you will have to reach the last motorable point - Gaurikund and then walk or ride a pony for around 14 kilometres. However, if you’re booking a package with MakeMyTrip, you will also have an option to undertake Chardham Yatra by helicopter from Sirsi, Phata, or Guptakashi.

Badrinath temple, also known as Badrikashram, is the holiest of all the Char Dham temples where Lord Vishnu resides in his avatar of Badrinarayan. There are various stories associated with the origin of the Badrinath temple. As per one of them, Lord Vishnu once performed a rigorous meditation at this place. The meditation was so intense that he didn’t care about the weather conditions. To protect him from the scorching heat, Goddess Lakshmi took the shape of a Badri tree and spread over him. Lord Vishnu was so pleased by Goddess Lakshmi's devotion that he named the spot as Badrikashram. The black lingam stone in the temple was founded in the 8th century by Shri Adi Shankaracharya. After a few years, the lingam was enshrined in a cave, and later the Raja of Garhwal installed the deity by building a temple. It is said that visiting Badrinath can absolve all the sins of pilgrims. Another best part about Badrinath is that no trekking is required to reach the temple.

Immerse yourself in the divine powers of ancient temples on this Chardham Yatra 2024 by opting for packages with MakeMyTrip. Whether you're looking for Chardham Yatra by helicopter or planning to take strenuous treks, you will find a range of great value Chardham yatra package at MakeMyTrip.

Online/Offline registration process for Chardham Yatra

Pilgrims planning a Chardham Yatra 2024 are required to get a registration done before proceeding to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. The registration process, both offline and online, is quite easy. You will have to register yourself at any one of the centres falling on the 4 Dham Yatra routes. Once the process of biometric registration is done, you will get a biometric card, which will also help with availing special facilities like food and lodging.

Although there are around 14 registration centres, it will be best to get an online registration done for the Chardham Yatra to save yourself some time and escape long queues. The process of online registration is quite easy. You need to have an email, mobile number, and a photo ID proof (Aadhaar Card, Voters ID card, PAN card, Driver’s License or Passport). Also, you will have to pay a fee of 50 INR. For the offline registration process, you need to carry a phone number and a photo ID card.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chardham Yatra Package

Ques. how long does the chardham tour package take.

Ans. A Chardham tour package can be for 4-6 days if you are journeying by helicopter. At the same time, it does require a minimum of 10-12 days if you are planning to complete the Chardham Yatra by road. And, if you have some time in hand, then there are many other landmarks including the Tapovan, Gaumukh, Auli, Chopta, Vasuki Tal, Bhauravnath Temple, Chopta and Hemkund Sahib that you can include in your itinerary.

Ques. From where does the Chardham tour start?

Ans. All Chardham tour packages usually begin from Haridwar. You can either fly to Dehradun and then go to Haridwar or reach the holy city directly by train or car. Thereafter, you have to travel to Yamunotri from Haridwar, which is around 6-7 hours drive by road. Your tour may also start from Dehradun if you choose to travel by helicopter to the Dhams.

Ques. Which are the Char Dhams in India?

Ans. The Char Dhams in the country are spread in four directions. The term was coined by Sri Adi Shankaracharya. These are Badrinath and Rameswaram in the north and south along with Puri and Dwarka in the east and west respectively. However, the Char Dhams or temples in the Himalayas are the following: • Yamunotri • Gangotri • Kedarnath • Badrinath

Ques. How should I complete the Chardham Yatra?

Ans. You should complete the Chardham Yatra in clockwise direction. This means reaching Haridwar first, before visiting Yamunotri. You can then go to Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. This should be an ideal way to complete the Chardham Yatra package. The pilgrimage sites encompass 1,607 kms in total. If you are going for a helicopter tour, then you can easily complete the pilgrimage in a week. Here is a sample itinerary: • Day 1- Reach Dehradun • Day 2- Dehradun-Kharsali-Yamunotri-Kharsali • Day 3- Kharsali-Harsil-Gangotri-Harsil • Day 4- Harsil-Sersi-Kedarnath-Sersi • Day 5- Sersi-Badrinath • Day 6- Return to Dehradun and then take your flight back home

Ques. Which Dham should I visit first?

Ans. If you are planning a chardham yatra package from Hyderabad , Bangalore, Delhi or any other city like Haridwar/Dehradun, you should know which Dham to visit first. Pilgrims believe that one should complete the hallowed Chardham Yatra in the clockwise direction. How does this work? The tour should begin from Yamunotri and then move to Gangotri, followed by Kedarnath and finally Badrinath. Getting to Haridwar will be a good way to start the Yatra in this manner. You can fly to the Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun via Delhi and then take a cab to reach Haridwar which is just 235 kms away.

Ques. Is there any age limit for the Chardham Yatra?

Ans. The rules and regulations of the Chardham Yatra are governed by the temple committees and official authorities. Whether you are planning a Chardham tour package by helicopter or by road, there is no official age limit for the pilgrimage. However, the e-pass guidelines of the committee mentions that children below the age of 10 years should avoid the pilgrimage. Similarly, the advisory also mentions that those who are above the age of 65 should avoid going on the Chardham Yatra. Women who are pregnant are also advised to skip the pilgrimage due to the higher altitude, weather conditions and other risks.

Ques. Which is the best month to go on a Char Dham Yatra?

All the four Dhams or temples (Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath) remain open only for half of the year. This is usually between April/May to October/November. The final dates are confirmed thereafter on the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivaratri by the Mandir Samiti. They are usually fixed by the priest of the famous Bhimashankar Linga Temple. Since the temples are positioned at higher altitudes, there is massive snowfall in the winter, making the committee close them in this period. Hence, you should plan your Chardham Yatra tour package in the stretch from April or May to October or November, as mentioned. Every winter, the Kedarnath Temple gates stay closed, while the idol is moved to the Ukhimath-based Omkareshwar Temple. The idols of the other Dhams are moved to and worshipped at the Shani Dev Temple in Kharsali, Mukhimath Temple in Mukba and the Vasu Dev Temple in Joshimath in the winter months.

Ques. Which is the nearest airport to the Char Dham pilgrimage?

Ans. While booking a Chardham Yatra package, you must also have an idea about the nearest airports for your journey. All the four Dhams are nearest to the Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun. It is only 55 kilometres away from Haridwar, while direct flights are also available between Delhi and Dehradun, for those coming from the national capital. Those booking chardham yatra packages from Bangalore or other cities will have to fly to Delhi and then take a connecting flight to Dehradun. Dehradun is only 109 kms away from Kedarnath and 146 kms away from Badrinath. Yamunotri and Gangotri are approximately 210 and 114 kms away from Dehradun respectively.

Ques. Can I take the Chardham Yatra by helicopter?

Ans. You can choose a Chardham helicopter package online. This will help you explore the pilgrimage sites without any hassle. You will not have to take the arduous treks, which may be excessively challenging for you. If you already have physical ailments or injuries, then helicopter tours are strongly recommended. Prices for a Chardham tour by helicopter may vary, costing around ₹ 1,39,090 for a 3 nights and 4 days package, covering Guptkashi, Dehradun and Badrinath. You can book a char dham yatra package from Haridwar or even a chardham package from Delhi . Many also opt for a chardham tour package from Dehradun . Char Dham Yatra: A comprehensive guide to the sacred pilgrimage

Uttarakhand, which is also referred to as Devbhoomi or the Land of Gods, is home to many temples and warmly receives devotees throughout the year. The Char Dham Yatra is one of the most significant pilgrimage circuits in Uttarakhand that draws countless devotees, among the various religious sites that they visit. The term Char Dham refers to the four holy places in Uttarakhand state, which are Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. These four destinations are believed to be the abode of gods and goddesses and are considered highly sacred by Hindus.

These shrines -- situated at high altitudes -- are closed for approximately six months annually, starting with the arrival of winter (October or November), and reopening during summer (April or May). The pilgrimage is undertaken by thousands of devotees every year, who believe that a visit to these holy sites will wash away their sins and grant them salvation.

This year, the much-awaited pilgrimage commenced on April 22, 2023, with the opening of Gangotri and Yamunotri temples in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district and is expected to conclude on November 21, 2023. As per the schedule, the doors of Gangotri Dham were opened at 12:35 pm and Yamunotri Dham at 12:41 pm. The portals of Kedarnath opened on April 25 and Badrinath on April 27.

The Char Dham Yatra is traditionally believed to be completed in a clockwise direction. The pilgrimage begins from Yamunotri, proceeds to Gangotri, then to Kedarnath, and eventually culminates at Badrinath. The journey can be undertaken by road or air, with helicopter services also available. Some devotees opt for a Do Dham Yatra, which involves a pilgrimage to two shrines, namely Kedarnath and Badrinath.

Yamunotri: Located at an altitude of 3,293 meters, Yamunotri is the source of the Yamuna River. The main attraction here is the Yamunotri temple, which is dedicated to the goddess Yamuna. The temple opens on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya in May and closes on Yama Dwitiya (the second day after Diwali) in November.

Gangotri: Gangotri is situated at an altitude of 3,100 meters and is the source of the Ganga River. The main attraction here is the Gangotri temple, which is dedicated to the goddess Ganga. The temple opens on Akshaya Tritiya and tentatively closes on Diwali .

Kedarnath: Located at an altitude of 3,583 meters, Kedarnath is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple here is believed to have been built by the Pandavas during the Mahabharata era. The temple opens after Akshaya Tritiya and tentatively closes on Bhai Dooj.

Badrinath: Badrinath is situated at an altitude of 3,133 meters and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The main attraction here is the Badrinath temple, which is believed to have been established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. The temple opens after Akshaya Tritiya with its closing date announced on Vijayadashami.

The Char Dham Yatra is a physically demanding journey that requires trekking at high altitudes. As such, it is important to undertake this journey with proper planning and preparation. The Uttarakhand government has taken several measures to ensure the safety and comfort of pilgrims during the yatra.

"It is important for the devotees to register themselves before travelling to Chardham Yatra and Hemkund Sahib. To ensure a smooth journey, the Uttarakhand government has set up a capping to the number of daily travellers," says the official website, asking everyone to check the validity on the portal and complete the registration before travelling at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in .

In light of the difficult journey, the following health measures are advised for a comfortable and safe pilgrimage by the Uttarakhand government

*All pilgrims should proceed for Yatra after a thorough health check-up.

*People with pre-existing illnesses should carry adequate supplies of prescribed medicines along with prescriptions and contact details of their respective physicians.

*Senior Citizens, people with comorbidities, and those who have suffered from COVID-19 in the past should consider postponing or not undertaking the pilgrimage.

*The travel itinerary should include at least one day’s rest before reaching the final pilgrimage site.

*Please carry adequate quantities of woollen/ warm clothes.

*Patients suffering from heart diseases, respiratory ailments, diabetes, and hypertension should be extra cautious while undertaking travel to high altitudes.

*In case you notice symptoms that include headache , dizziness, drowsiness, chest tightness, nausea, vomiting, coughing, fast breathing, and increased heart rate, please seek medical attention immediately or contact the 104 and 108 helplines for assistance.

*Avoid consumption of alcohol and other drugs and refrain from smoking.

*To protect skin from sunlight, sunscreen with SPF 50 may be used.

*Sun glasses may also be used to protect eyes from UV rays.

*Keep yourself well hydrated and avoid travelling on an empty stomach.
