Best China SIM Cards & eSIM Options | Ultimate 2024 Guide

How can you get China SIM cards? And which China SIM card is best? While some travelers have the option to activate the international roaming on their home country phone plans, that’s either really expensive or not a good option for those who will be in China long-term. The best solution is to get your own Chinese SIM card. Here’s how.

Having traveled around Asia for over 15 years, I highly recommend traveling through China with a smartphone .

You can get map directions, pay for almost anything, use Chinese voice translators , use the popular WeChat app, book Chinese trains , and so much more. In short, your smart phone can take all the most common pains out of traveling so you can focus more on having a good time.

But to do all these things, you need network access for your phone, which often requires buying a local China SIM card.

For those who may not know, a SIM card (short for “subscriber identity module”) is that little card that goes inside your phone that connects you to local service (phone, text, internet). You may not know it’s there…but it is.

Newer phones now have the option to use what’s known as an eSIM, which is a digital version of this small card.

Overall I recommend three ways to connect to China’s mobile network using your phone:

• Purchase a PrePaid SIM Card: If you know for sure that your phone is unlocked, you can purchase a Chinese SIM card (or eSIM card) prior to your arrival in China.

• Purchase a SIM Card in China : If you’re already in China or if it’s too late to purchase a prepaid China SIM card, you can always visit the office of a local service provider in China to get a SIM card. This option takes time, however, so I wouldn’t make this your primary option.
• Rent a Phone / International Roaming: If your phone isn’t unlocked but you still need to use a phone in China, you can either rent a phone or use international roaming with your home carrier.

Before I go on about SIM cards, it’s worth noting that if all you need is internet access, you can always look into your options for getting reliable WiFi in China . There are drawbacks to this method, but in some ways it is easier than trying to get a China SIM card.

In order to better understand how to use your mobile phone internationally or how China treats cellular customers, let’s start off with some basics of Chinese SIM cards.

The Basics – Using a China SIM Card

Although using a SIM card with any phone is generally as easy as inserting it in your phone (or the 5-minute setup process for an eSIM), there are a couple basic -but incredibly important! – things you should know before buying one for China.

Let’s run through the most important ones.

Your Phone Must Be Unlocked for a new SIM (IMPORTANT!)

First thing to know is that your phone needs to be unlocked to use a China SIM card .

If you purchased your phone at a discount (e.g. AT&T or Verizon subsidized the phone or gave it to you “free”), or you currently lease your phone, it’s likely your phone is locked by your carrier.

Unfortunately, if this is the case you can’t use a China SIM card.

Note on Locked Phones

This isn’t the case for phones that offer 2 SIM card slots or for eSIMs. In this case, you can still purchase a SIM or eSIM even if your phone is still locked to your home carrier.

Until you make a request to your carrier and in some cases pay off the balance of your phone entirely, that mobile phone will remain “locked” into that service provider.

Still not sure if your phone is unlocked?

If so, use one of the resources I list below to check if the phone is unlocked.

• Check Your Phone’s Unlock Status (imei.info)
• Check Your Phone’s Compatibility with China Carriers

If it is, you can contact your phone carrier and explain you need the unlock code for your trip to China. As long as you don’t have any outstanding balances on your account, your wireless carrier generally will have zero objections to unlocking your phone.

Expect this process to take a few days, so plan ahead should your trip to China be coming up.

SIM Cards in China Expire with No Use

During my second trip to China, I was surprised to find out after landing that my previous phone plan no longer worked, despite having plenty of credit leftover from the previous trip.

This happened because Chinese phone providers cancel unused SIM cards after a certain amount of time (different for each carrier).

You’ll want to be careful not to buy your Chinese SIM card too far in advance.

Once you buy a prepaid China SIM card, it may only last 30 days upon activation. So time your purchase accordingly and request for your SIM card to activate on the day you land in China.

Remember to also only buy enough credit to last you for your trip. Even if you do revisit China, your leftover credit will likely be forfeited after 30 or 60 days.

Don’t worry, you can always top up your phone in China if you run out of credit.

You Must Register to Activate Your China SIM Card

The Chinese government requires real-name registration to activate a SIM card.

If you purchase a pre-paid Chinese SIM card before you leave (which I recommend), this means you usually have to provide a copy of your passport.

When buying a prepaid China SIM card, don’t be surprised when the company requires you to send in a photocopy of your passport. It’s an unavoidable part of the process to activate the SIM card.

If you purchase the SIM card within China, this could mean providing bio-metric data such as a face scan and fingerprints in addition to your passport.

Best China SIM Card (Recommendation)

Whether you’re purchasing a prepaid China SIM card before you arrive or you’ve decided to purchase a SIM card from within China at a local telecom office, it helps to know what’s available and which are the offers for the best China SIM card plan.

I’m always an advocate for things that make traveling in China easy. So my top pick for the best SIM card for China is one that can be easily purchased online prior to your arrival and that works with pretty many any phone that you might have.

Airalo China eSIM Solution *Recommended*

• eSIM Cards available for immediate use
• Data only (no phone number)
• Various data packages available
• Works all across China
• Available packages for 7, 15 and 30 days

For most people, having a phone number isn’t necessary when traveling. The only thing that matters is DATA. That’s why the Airalo China eSIM is such a good option.

There are multiple eSIMs to choose from, which include various options for validity (7 days, 15 days, or 30 days) as well as data limits (1GB up to 20GB).

Every Airalo eSIM offers coverage across every part of China and works immediately once you land in country. Best of all, setting up an eSIM takes only about 10 minutes from the moment you click “purchase” to the moment when the eSIM is available to use.

Still, you’re going to want to get this set up prior to your visit to China, as well as downloading a good VPN for China .

China Phone Plans (Purchased in China)

There are three major cellular providers in China:

• China Telecom
• China Unicom
• China Mobile

Unfortunately, China Telecom SIM cards don’t work with phones purchased outside of China, so even though you’ll see plenty of China Telecom stores in China, you’ll want to stick with either China Unicom or China Mobile.

While China Mobile is the market leader in China and generally has the best nationwide coverage, China Unicom is compatible with more foreign phones, allowing them to access both 3G and 4G service. That being said, I’ve used both services and had good experiences either way, so it’s hard to go wrong!

If you’re going to purchase a SIM card in China, here are my recommendations for the best China SIM card plan for each carrier.

When visiting a China Unicom store, I’d go with the “Nationwide Data King” plan (全国流量王/ Quánguó liúliàng wáng) for 2019. Here are the details for the plan:

• 69 RMB prepaid monthly
• 10 GB of nationwide data
• 500 minutes of outgoing nationwide calls
• Incoming calls and SMS text messages are free
• Additional outgoing calls are 0.15 RMB/minute
• Additional data charges are 10 RMB/100MB and 30 RMB /1GB

Most foreign phones won’t work with China Mobile’s 3G network, so you’ll be pushed to their 4G coverage where available (2G where not available). Here are the details for their best phone plan plan for 2019:

• 88 RMB prepaid monthly
• 10 GB of nationwide data coverage.
• 50 minutes of outgoing nationwide calls.
• Incoming calls and SMS text messages are free.
• Additional outgoing calls are 0.19 RMB/minute.
• Additional data slows down to 1 mbps until you top off your card.

China Mobile Details

In general, if you’re using a foreign phone, I recommend China Unicom over China Mobile .

China Unicom is most compatible with foreign phones and you can use both 4G and 3G service. I’ve also never experienced any real problems in service in major Chinese cities and their plans are really cheap for what you get!

China Mobile ranks #1 in coverage throughout China, but since their 3G service generally isn’t compatible with phones purchased outside of China, anywhere where there isn’t 4G coverage you’ll automatically get bumped down to the painfully slow 2G service.

DISCOUNTS: As with any business, you’ll often run into special promotions or discounts being offered in-store at both China Mobile and China Unicom. Sometimes these can be really good deals if you plan to be in China for a long while, but if your need of a China SIM card is short-term, it’s best to stick with the above recommended plans.

How to Top Up China SIM Cards

It’s quite possible that you encounter a point where they use up all your phone or data credit and cannot make outgoing calls, text messages, and lose the ability to access the Internet.

There are several ways for “topping up” your China SIM card when you run out of credit.

• Top Up At a Local Store . You can visit any one of your mobile carrier’s stores and give them your phone number and cash. They will take that as a hint that you need more credit added to your China SIM card. This method always works but, depending on the line, can take quite a while to accomplish.
• Top up through Alipay or WeChat Pay . While this is arguably the easiest and fastest way, you need a local Chinese bank account or money in your Alipay/WeChat Pay wallets to top up. If you don’t have a Chinese bank account, you can always hand a Chinese friend some cash and they can top up your Chinese SIM card for you.

I personally prefer topping up using Alipay or WeChat pay.

Using a Phone in China | 6 Crucial Tips

Finally, to maximize the use of your China SIM card or if you want to consider alternatives to buying a China phone plan entirely, I’ve got 6 crucial tips for you:

• Remember that China actively censors Internet content including websites and apps like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp and many, many more blocked websites . So to share stories and photos with your friend during your journey, I’d buy a VPN before you leave to get around the Internet censors (such as ExpressVPN ), otherwise it’s much harder to do so once you arrive since the VPN websites are blocked. Thankfully, there are still ways to install a VPN from within China .
• As mentioned above, the easiest way to buy a prepaid China SIM card before you depart for China . This can easily free up an entire morning or afternoon to see other things in China instead of waiting and trying to figure out phone plans. We recommend Airalo’s China eSIM options .
• It can be easy to run out of phone credit quickly in China especially if you are consuming heavy data usage services like streaming and video chat. If you have a plan with less data than you would normally use at home, use your phone sparingly so you can avoid having to top off your phone plan multiple times.
• If all you need is Internet access and don’t see yourself needing to make any phone calls, consider instead renting or buying a global WiFi hotspot device for your trip .
• It’s no secret that the Chinese government monitors communication you send through WeChat and I for one do not like the idea of my passport tied to a China SIM card for privacy purposes. Even businesses restrict their own devices being used in China out of concerns for intellectual property theft, so I’d consider renting a phone for China during your trip. This is also a good option if your phone carrier won’t agree to unlock your phone.
• Lastly, you can always consider not dealing with the hassle of getting a China SIM card by using your own cellular provider in China. Keeping mind, though, that the international roaming charges can potentially run you a fortune. This option definitely wins for convenience, but can easily break the bank for budget travelers.

Final Thoughts | China SIM Card

As a seasoned traveler in China, I definitely think it’s worth having a local phone plan for your trip to China. Overall, I find buying one online easiest (especially a prepaid China SIM card ) and there are many ways to top off your plan should you run out of credit.

If getting a SIM card is something you truly don’t want to do, then I would settle for global WiFi as a reliable and affordable alternative for accessing the Internet.

Don’t forget to also get yourself a VPN before you leave so you can access blocked websites and apps like Facebook and Instagram. There are many good VPN providers out there, but I personally prefer ExpressVPN .

Hey Josh, timely article! i have been in anshan for a week. my china unicom sim card expired while i was back in florida. i will visit a china unicom store today to rectify the problem. I am heading to yingkou tomorrow for two weeks. then i fly from there to xi’an for a week. back to yingkou after that; return to Panama City beach on april 16th.

This is a good read. I will be in beijing next month for a vacation. I am from the Philippines. I will be arriving Beijing by 1AM. I would like to know if the stores will be open by that timeto get a sim card? Based on the willmyphone work link (thanks for the insight btw), my phone can be supported only by China Unicom. If the stores will already be closed by that time, what are my options?

Hey Well, unfortunately all the shops, including those in the Beijing airport that might sell SIM cards, have already closed by 1am. You only have two options: 1) pre-purchase your SIM card using the 3G Solutions link in this article or 2) wait until the morning to get a SIM card. I recommend saving time by pre-purchasing.

If you live in the U.S., get a Google fi account. I have traveled to china 6 times and get good data service (LTE) from both China Telecom and China Unicom. Data costs $10/GB and is free over $60. The phone line costs $20/month and calls are $0.20/min or free over wifi. Google gets the service through T-Mobile, but for Google it is running at full speed. The great advantage is that you can be reached through your US number and that the service works in almost every country. It used to be that you needed a Google phone, but now a lot of other phones work with it too. I personally have the original Pixel XL from 2016 and it has an amazing camera. Only $120 used on eBay.

Yes, you can use a passport, although often you have to go to a main telecom office, not a smaller one.

I’m going to be TRAVELING to china very soon and i Was cUstOmizing my sim card through the “explore 3G solutions” link, but I wanted to double check if it was a good idea to get a sim card only with data (GB + VPN). Great questions. Getting a local phone number allows you to receive texts, which in many cases helps if you want to use WiFi around China. Otherwise, you can do fine with just data.

As for the VPN, I recommend getting your own VPN (like ExpressVPN , separate from the SIM card company.

I am not sure if this workS in china but i know it works in eUrope, mexico, and other asian COUNTRIES. I have magic jack with a usa number for our unit down south, it works with wifi or on a phone. It cost 19.95 a year. You can onlY call or text canada and usa.

Yes, there are a number of VoiP options available, but they don’t give you a Chinese phone number. You’d be surprised at how helpful this can be as you’re traveling around China.

1. Will a data only sim card able to order didi? i.e. driver won’t be able to call you or text you. yes I can read and speak chinese. 2. The 2 local plans seem to be all monthly plans? Do they have a prepaid one-time only plan? Can I buy them in the gaungzhou airport?

That’s a good point, which is why I often recommend people get a Chinese SIM card instead of using their international roaming. You need a phone number in order to use DiDi.

As for local plans, they all seem to be monthly plans. I don’t know that they do prepaid, one-time plans. And yes, there are SIM card kiosks at the Guangzhou airport 🙂

I have a China mobile SIM, on the 88rmb package. I constantly travel to China but was wondering how it works if let’s say the month finishes and I wait 15 days to recharge. Will that mean the next month of data starts when I recharge? Will I have to recharge every single month to keep using the number?

They’re active when you receive them, but they’re useless until you arrive in China. It would be pretty hard to test them, I would think.

If you’re already in China, I would go to a store. If you haven’t arrived yet and you’re only traveling through China, I would pre-purchase a SIM card to make things easier.

Best China SIM Card: Everything You Need To Know

Searching for the best China SIM card for your upcoming trip? Look no further!

In this guide, we’ll explain where to buy a SIM card in China in person and online. We’ll also discuss prepaid SIM cards for tourists and China eSIMs plans.

Before you read this guide, you may wonder if you actually need a SIM card in China. If you don’t mind not having Internet, you’ll likely find free Wifi in restaurants, shopping malls, and hotels.

That said, if you need data to get around, call a cab, or translate Chinese – you may want to get a SIM card for your travels in China .

It’s important to know that the Internet can be restricted in China. For example, some websites may be blocked or censored, and the speed of connections can sometimes be slow.

To stay connected while in China, it’s best to invest in a local SIM card (or eSIM) and use a reliable VPN to browse freely. I personally use NordVPN .

Best SIM Cards In China

If you’re traveling in China, we recommend using a SIM card from China Unicom, China Mobile, China Telecom, or Airalo.

I’ll get back to Airalo later on, so keep reading to learn more!

That said, if you’re planning on visiting other countries during your trip to Asia, you might want to make sure to pick an option that offers coverage in other Asian countries.

How To Buy A SIM Card In China

You can buy a China prepaid SIM card in person in some international airports, mobile provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

Usually, you can expect higher costs and low data offers at the airport, so we don’t recommend buying a SIM card at the airport.

That said, you won’t necessarily find SIM card shops in every airport, so it’s essential to keep this in mind. And, when you see a shop, you might also have limited options.

For this reason, I’d recommend buying a SIM card directly from the mobile provider store. Note that you may need your passport to buy one.

Although, this means you won’t get data right upon your arrival. So, if you prefer to be connected at all times, you could use an eSIM or purchase an Asia prepaid SIM card online.

Now, let’s look at the mobile data plans offered by China Unicom, China Mobile, and China Telecom.

China Unicom SIM Cards

China Unicom offers a variety of prepaid SIM card plans. The most relevant for tourists include:

• 10 GB data, valid for 30 days, for CNY 20 ($80)
• 20 GB data, valid for 30 days, for CNY 40 ($100)
• 30 GB data, valid for 30 days, for CNY 60 ($120)

China Mobile SIM Cards

China Mobile has several plans available for inbound tourists:

• 2 GB data, valid for 30 days for USD 48
• 3 GB data, valid for 30 days for USD 80
• 18 GB data, valid for 30 days for USD 198

China Telecom SIM Cards

China Telecom offers a number of SIM-only plans for local users:

• 30 GB, valid for 30 days, CNY 129 ($19.12)
• 40 GB, valid for 30 days, CNY 159 ($23.57)
• 100 GB, valid for 30 days, CNY 229 ($33.95)

Please note the China Telecom website is in Chinese and is difficult to use.

Overall, we think China Unicom is the best option if you plan to buy your SIM card in person. That said, any would do if you can’t find their store!

How To Buy A China Prepaid SIM Card Online

If you wish to have your SIM card ready for your arrival, you could purchase it online or on websites like Amazon.

You’ll find different plans on Amazon. For example, the Prepaid Asia-Pacific SIM card works in more than 17 countries and gives you unlimited data for 14 days. China is included.

But there are many other options worth considering, so have a look and make sure the countries you plan on visiting are listed.

Another option is to purchase a prepaid China SIM card on SimOptions . You’ll have a few options to pick from.

• 6 GB, valid for 10 days for $19.90
• 6 GB, valid for 15 days for $39.90

Another popular option is to purchase from 3G SOLUTIONS, a local Chinese vendor. They have been selling SIM cards to tourists and business travelers since 2010.

They can deliver your SIM card to your hotel in China. You’ll get data as well as a Chinese phone number.

They offer many different packages, including the following:

• 10 GB, valid for 30 days for $30 (add 100 local minutes & texts for $5, VPN $9 – 12)
• 20 GB, valid for 30 days for $40 (add 100 local minutes & texts for $5, VPN $9 – 12)

Finally, the last option is to buy an eSIM card for China or, if you’re traveling to multiple countries, an eSIM plan for Asia.

How To Buy An eSIM Card For China

eSIM is a new concept that allows you to have a virtual SIM card inside your phone. If your mobile phone supports eSIM cards – it’s one of the best options to get mobile datas in China.

If you plan on visiting China, having a sim card is essential. Access to the internet while traveling makes exploring new cities much easier. With internet access, you can easily find the best restaurants, get directions to your accommodation, book a taxi, and share photos with your family on the go.

While roaming is an option, international fees can quickly add up. Therefore, we recommend either getting an eSIM or a local sim card to access affordable local phone rates. The good news is that obtaining either option in China is incredibly simple.

To help you make the best choice, this comprehensive guide provides up-to-date pricing information and recommends the most suitable sim card for your needs.

Best sim card in china for tourists.

Getting a local sim card in China can be quite difficult and time consuming, especially if you don’t speak Chinese, don’t have a Chinese ID and didn’t buy your phone in China. On top of this, they are generally very expensive for foreigners.

For these reasons I recommend Airalo’s China eSim as the best sim card in China. You can buy the eSim before you visit China and activate it on wifi at the airport without having to talk to anyone at all. Trust me, this is by far the best option.

For most travellers, the 5GB plan for $16.50 USD is perfect. Wifi can be found all over the place so even if you’re visiting for a longer trip you can usually connect to wifi. The Airalo eSim even uses the reliable China Unicom network.

If your phone isn’t compatible with eSims (by the way, most phones do support eSims, including all iPhones since 2018) then you will have no choice but to purchase a local sim card in China. In this case, I would recommend finding a China Unicom store. They have a very extensive network and offer the best options that work with phones purchased outside of China.

China Sim Card Prices

A Tourist Sim Card in China costs $16.50 USD in April 2024, however, the exact price will often depend on the store you visit and the plan you choose.

Alternatively, an eSim in China will cost between $5 USD and $28 USD. This, again, depends on how much data you require and which eSim provider you choose.

I generally recommend this Airalo plan for most tourists visiting China which includes 5GB of data which is valid for 30 days and costs $16.50 USD.

China Sim Card Providers

China Unicom, China Mobile, and China Telecom are the main sim card providers in China. China Unicom, with its nationwide coverage, offers various mobile plans and packages suitable for individuals and businesses. How to Get a Sim Card in China

Identify mobile providers: China Unicom, China Mobile and China Telecom are your best options in China.

Find your nearest store: Locate a store or retailer by searching on Google Maps for your nearest store or asking at your hotel reception. I’ve never had issues finding a store as they can usually be found in major cities, shopping centers, or tourist areas. If possible, I always recommend to to avoid airports and head in to an official store in the city.

Bring the necessary documents: It is always a good idea to carry your passport or identification documents for sim card registration purposes. We’ve found most providers will need to confirm your identity to provide a sim card and it can be a major hassle to head to a store only to have to come back again later with your passport.

Choose your plan: Either request the plan you are after or consult with the staff in the store to select the right plan for you. My recommendations at the beginning of this guide are a good starting point, but the staff will usually be able to suggest the best option.

Pay and activate your card: Pay for the SIM card and plan, and the staff will activate it for you.

Test: It’s always a good idea to check that you can access the internet before you leave the store. I always search for something on Google then refresh my Instagram feed to check it’s working fine.

Where to Get a Sim Card in China

At the airport.

Buying a prepaid sim card for China at the airport is usually considered the most convenient option for travellers arriving by plane.

However, airport stores selling sim cards are almost guaranteed to charge inflated prices, so if you are a cost-conscious traveller then you should definitely buy your sim card from a store in the city center.

In addition to this, we would argue that buying physical sim cards at all aren’t particularly convenient now that most people use esim compatible phones. If you are looking for the most convenient option, then buying an esim before you arrive or with the airport wifi is much easier and will save you having to queue up or communicate with staff.

If you must purchase a sim card at the airport in China then you will be in luck. All major international airports in China have stores selling sim cards. Despite the prices being higher than normal, the staff are knowledgable and will be able to get you set up with the correct sim card relatively quickly.

If you want to avoid the inflated sim card prices you’ll find at the airport and your phone isn’t esim compatible, then you’re going to need to head in to a store to buy your sim card.

I recommend visiting one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators such as China Unicom, China Mobile and China Telecom. Your best option is to enter their names into Google Maps and find the branch closest to your hotel or accommodation. Typically the staff in the official stores in China are knowledgable and helpful which means you can ensure you’ll walk away with a functioning sim card.

Despite this, it’s always a good idea to check your internet is working before you leave the store by loading a Google search results page and your preferred social media app. You should also ensure you always bring your passport with you when purchasing a sim card in case they need to register it.

If you like to be prepared and would prefer to arrive in China with your sim card all sorted and your phone ready to connect to the internet immediately then you should look into purchasing a sim card online.

The first option is to buy your sim card in advance via SimOptions, which is a company that will prepare and ship a sim card directly to your door. It’s a reliable and effective service, but with the invention of eSims it’s becoming obsolete.

An eSim is a digital version of a traditional sim card and is most likely the future of connectivity for mobile devices. The convenience of no longer visiting a store, handing over your passport and purchasing a physical sim card is quickly making physical sim cards obsolete in favour of eSims.

Here’s a general guide on how to use an eSIM:

Check eSIM Compatibility: Ensure that your device supports eSIM functionality. Many newer smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and other devices are eSIM compatible including all iPhones produced since 2018.

Why Buy a Sim Card For China?

Having an internet connection is so helpful when visiting many countries around the world. But in China, it is pretty much essential.

With a complicated language and different alphabet to many western countries, translation apps are so helpful here.

Getting around can be a lot harder too, so navigation apps will make your life so much easier!

Your current sim may or may not work. But even if it does, it may abruptly cut off due to network issues, plus expensive overseas data packages can really put a dent in your budget.

A China sim is the best way to ensure you stay covered, avoid astronomical roaming fees, and are able to keep using social media (more on that later).

Buying a Sim Card For China – Things To Consider

There are a lot of different options when it comes to buying a sim card. And of course, everyone is different. Consider these options when buying a sim card for China;

Obviously, price is a hugely important factor when buying a sim card for any country. You want to save money by not using your current provider. 

But the cheapest deal isn’t always the best option. You need to decide what package is right for you. 

Always check all of the details when buying a sim card. Many don’t allow hotspotting, so make sure you only plan to use one device and budget accordingly.

Check how much any top-ups will cost too, are they still affordable if you need to buy extra data while you’re away?

With messaging apps like WhatsApp (or WeChat in China) , texts and minutes no longer really matter. It’s the data we care about.

Pay close attention to the amount of data you get included with your sim card.

A great way to budget how much data you will use is by checking your current contract. Log into your online account and find out your daily usage.

Traveling will of course mean extra searches, more time on maps, and downloading entertainment for long flights. 

Often you will use up to twice as much data abroad, so make sure to account for this when thinking about a new prepaid sim.

And double check the top-up rate is just as good as the initial offer. Sometimes local sim providers will rely on you being in a rush at the airport and not checking these important details.

China is a vast country . Although it’s sped ahead with technological developments, some areas still have poor network coverage.

It often depends on the network provider and can vary area to area. Do some research into the place you are visiting.

Does this network have good coverage? Would you be better off with someone else?

China Unicom is one of the biggest network providers throughout Asia so it is a pretty safe bet. 

By researching all of this before you go you will avoid picking up a sim at the airport that might not work on your phone or may have spotty coverage.

After all, what good is a sim if it doesn’t actually connect to the internet?!

Bureaucracy

Of course, China is covered in red tape. You will know this just from trying to get a visa to visit the country. 

The Chinese government requires your full name (as per passport details) to activate any sim card. 

When buying a prepaid China sim card, the company may require you to send in a photocopy of your passport. 

If you purchase a sim card within China, you will have to provide biometric data such as a face scan and fingerprints in addition to your passport.

If you prefer more privacy, it may be best to buy a sim card online from an international provider before you travel.

Many travel sims have an expiry date and will not work at all, even if they still have credit. 

This is no different in China, phone providers will even cancel unused sim cards after a certain amount of time (usually 30 to 60 days). 

So make sure not to buy your sim too far ahead of time; or get one of the eSims, recommended below, that you can simply activate on arrival.

Will you be returning to China? Do you know what date you are leaving? All of these may have an impact on which sim card is best for you.

Where To Buy a Sim Card For China

You can buy a sim card for China in a few different ways. But there are certain things to be aware of if buying locally. 

The three major mobile operators in China are China Telecom, China Unicom, and China Mobile. 

But, China Telecom sim cards don’t work with phones purchased outside of China! So make sure to only look at one of the other two. More on that below.

By far the easiest way to get online in China is by purchasing an eSim online before you travel. You don’t have to struggle without data trying to find a sim card retailer, simply activate it on arrival.

It’s not always the cheapest option, but you are going to save a lot of time trying to find a sim and working out the various packages on the ground.

An eSim is just like a normal sim but without a physical product. You just download it onto your phone and it gives you access to your new data plan. 

The only downside is that not all phones are compatible. Before purchasing, make sure that your device is eSIM-compatible and that your phone is unlocked.

You can buy a sim card when you arrive in China at Beijing airport or Shanghai airport. This is an easy option and means you can get connected straight away without having to find a local phone shop.

Most of the airport staff should be able to speak English and can help you get set up. But there isn’t much choice available and plans are at a premium here due to the convenient location.

Also consider what time you will be arriving at the airport. The sim card vendors often hang around just before you get to the taxi ranks in arrivals, but many won’t be working in the middle of the night.

Local phone stores are usually the cheapest place to get a local sim card for the country you are visiting. But there are still things you need to be careful with.

Although China Mobile has the best coverage throughout China, their 3G service usually isn’t compatible with phones purchased outside of China. 

This makes it incredibly inconvenient as outside of the cities with 4G coverage you’ll only have access to the very slow 2G service.

China Unicom is the most compatible with foreign phones. For 69 RMB you can get 10 GB of nationwide data and 500 minutes of outgoing nationwide calls (valid for 30 days).

Of course, there’s also the fact that you will have to translate the deals if buying in person. In many touristy areas, there may be signs in English, but it can be hit and miss and depends on where you are. 

There are also many ID requirements, as previously mentioned, so make sure to have all of your documents with you when buying a sim at a store in China.

A note of privacy and getting a VPN

If you want to stay connected and have unrestricted access you will need to buy a VPN before you travel to China. Once you’re in China it’s too late as VPN sites are also blocked for obvious reasons.

How To Get a SIM Card in China

If you're planning your trip to China, it shouldn't be a surprise to learn that you won't be able to call, text, or access the web on the go with your smartphone as you usually would at home. And if you do manage to get connected via roaming, it can result in hefty additional charges. That's where SIM cards come into the picture. By getting yourself a local Chinese SIM card (or, as we'll see, a digital eSIM), you'll be able to connect to the internet via mobile data while on the move and, depending on the bundle you choose, even send SMSes or make local phone calls.

To get a SIM card in China, you basically have two options:

Option 1: Local Physical SIM Cards

Buying a local SIM card in China works in much the same way as buying a SIM card does in your home country : you purchase a small microchip with a fixed prepaid amount of data loaded onto it for a once-off fee. (Especially as a tourist visiting the country for a shorter period, you probably won't need a recurring monthly contract or a more advanced bundle with additional minutes or text, but the option is normally available too, if you like.) You then insert this chip into your smartphone — and away you go!

These physical SIM card microchips come in three main sizes:

• Standard SIM: 25x15mm (about the size of a standard postage stamp)
• Micro SIM: 15x12mm (a bit smaller than a dime)
• Nano SIM: 12.3x8.8mm (about the size of a peanut)

Most SIM card retailers offer only nano SIMs these days, including in China. But if the retailer you visit doesn't offer nano SIMs (or in case the SIM cards sold don't fit into your phone), you can ask for a SIM card adapter, which is normally very cheap and available in most cell phone shops or kiosks.

If you run out of data, you can normally recharge your SIM with ease, too. To do this, visit your network provider's website or go to the counter of pretty much any cell phone shop, convenience store, kiosk, or tourist information in China and ask about data recharge. Many Chinese retailers countrywide offer data packages for major networks like China Unicom and China Mobile, making it a quick and accessible option.

If you don't plan on using your Chinese SIM for a future vacation after you arrive home, make sure you cut your SIM card chip in two with a sturdy pair of scissors to prevent fraudsters from pulling any personal data from your card, and, if possible, recycle it with other electronic waste.

Option 2: eSIM Cards

A digital alternative to physical SIM cards, eSIMs are regular SIM cards that don't require inserting an actual microchip  into your device while providing the exact same benefits. Newer smartphones (but also smartwatches, tablets, and other devices) can be equipped with eSIMs, and since you don't need a physical microchip to install an eSIM, you can also get one before you even take off on your trip to China. To do this, you just need to visit an online eSIM service, purchase the eSIM you want, and follow the instructions to download and install it onto your device.

Like regular SIM cards, prepaid eSIMs come bundled with a certain fixed amount of data (or, more rarely, SMSes or telephone minutes) which you can use at your leisure while traveling in China. You get to choose the package you want, and you can generally also extend your eSIM's validity easily right from an app.

In general, eSIMs cost about the same as physical Chinese SIMs or are slightly more expensive per gigabyte, but in our opinion, their accessibility and eco-friendliness make them the better option for most travelers. We delve into why a bit later in this article.

Network Providers in China

Whether you use a physical SIM or eSIM, it's good to keep in mind that Chinese telecommunications are dominated by a handful of network operators. These networks provide the infrastructure that allows you to use mobile data on the go. In China, the biggest players are listed below, so be on the lookout for their names on storefronts (if you're looking for a physical SIM card) or on the top right-hand corner of your smartphone (which shows you which network you're currently connected to):

• China Mobile
• China Telecom
• China Unicom
• and others...

In general, network connectivity for mobile data in China is very good , meaning that you shouldn't have any problems accessing the web from one of the major networks across the country, even in more rural areas of the country.

Where to Buy a SIM Card in Chinese Cities

In general, it's very easy to buy a Chinese SIM card. Normally, you can buy a SIM once you arrive at the airport, but you can typically also do so at shops, convenience stores, and kiosks in city centres, malls, or business or market districts. (Don't forget that SIM cards aren't only sold in brick-and-mortar outlets and sometimes in pop-up booths or temporary stalls, depending on where you are.)

In China, you'll easily find SIM card dealers in the following locations:

• Beijing Capital International Airport,
• Shanghai Pudong International Airport,
• Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport,
• Kiosks and vendors in most city centres.

Digital eSIMs: A Better Option in China

As we saw earlier, eSIMs generally have numerous advantages and are often a better alternative to using a regular SIM card for most tourists. In our opinion, the most significant advantages include:

• internet immediately upon arrival in China,
• no negotiating with SIM card sellers at the airport,
• transparent and fair pricing,
• online extension is often possible,
• credit card payment is possible,
• local telecom provider networks are used.

However, there is one potential issue around compatibility. Not all devices support eSIMs. If your device was released before late 2019, we recommend double-checking on the internet or contacting a representative from an eSIM service to confirm whether your device is compatible before you purchase an eSIM. In general, the following devices will support eSIMs though:

2. Get an Unlocked Cell Phone and Purchase a Chinese SIM Card

This may be the best choice for people who need to use their cell phones often to surf the Internet or make calls.

What is a locked cell phone? This is a cell phone that is tied into a certain carrier's network. That is to say, the cell phone can only work with one service provider. For example, if your cell phone can only use an AT&T SIM card, your cell phone is a locked mobile phone. Most cell phones are locked.

How to unlock your cell phone: Contact your mobile phone provider, tell them your conditions, and ask them to unlock your cell phone. Some mobile phone providers require users not to unlock their cell phones for a certain period of time. In this situation, you can buy or rent an unlocked cell phone.

Once you have an unlocked cell phone, you need to purchase a Chinese SIM card. Let me start with telling you that getting connected with an e-sim card when traveling to China will make your life so much easier! Based on my own experiences on my recent trip to Shanghai and Shenzhen the internet censorship in China really is a pain and constantly trying to find a VPN that actually works and gives you a fast data connection is a daily challenge.

You can fix it all by buying an e-sim card for China and enjoy using data on your phone without any internet restriction and NO VPN NEEDED! How and what? Keep reading…

In this guide I will show you a comparison of all the e-sim card plans for China with up to date prices as per April 2024. Let me start with giving you my e-sim card recommendation for China. These are my favorite e-sim cards for traveling to China in 2024.

My recommendation

Traveltomtom recommends the following two e-sim cards for traveling to China in 2024:

1.  Chinacom e-sim card from Airalo for $28 USD  

• 10 GB data-only e-sim
• Valid in China only
• Valid for 30 days

2. Nomad e-sim card for $27 USD

• 20 GB data-only e-sim

Traveltomtom definitely recommends an Airalo e-sim card for China as they came to the rescue on my recent trip to China. I presonally had the best experience with an Airalo e-sim and did NOT NEED A VPN! I could access every app possible: Google Maps, Safari, Instagram, Tiktok, Facebook, etc without any issues. And again I did NOT use a VPN!

Airalo is more expensive than Nomad, but Traveltomtom had lately some performance issues with Nomad e-sim card and Nomad is therefore not my first recommendation for staying connected when traveling to China.

But the best value e-sim card for China is an e-sim Nomad. A Nomad e-sim card plan for China with 20 GB data plan costs only $27 USD, which is just $1.35 USD per Gigabyte. They have more e-sim data plans and they go down as much as $0.98 USD per Gigabyte.

Besides the fact that the Nomad e-sim card plans for China are the best buy they are also 5G ready. This in comparison with Airalo and SimOptions e-sim cards for China which only support 4G/LTE.

Both e-sim cards are data-only e-sim cards and incoming and outgoing calls or sms are not supported. Data is only valid in China. 

Is China one of your stops on a trip to Asia then you can also look into getting an e-sim card for traveling in Asia . There are e-sim cards that cover multiple countries in Asia.

There are 2 very important things to check before ordering an e-sim card for China or in general before using an e-sim card.

Unlocked phones only

Make sure your phone is unlocked. E-sim cards only work in unlocked phones. If you are not sure if your phone is unlocked then contact your mobile internet provider in your home country. 

In general phones from Europe, Asia and the Middle East tend to be unlocked. Phones from North America are often locked. 

If your smartphone is locked that means it does not allow another prepaid sim card or e-sim card to operate in the device. You can easily unlock your phone, but depending on your mobile internet provider you will be charged a fee for unlocking your phone.

E-sim compatible phones only

Second, and equally important: e-sim cards only work if your smartphone supports e-sim cards, also called e-sim compatible. All newer smartphones support e-sim cards. If you are not sure if your phone is e-sim compatible then simply go to Google and type in your mobile phone model in the search bar and ask if it is e-sim compatible. You will get the answer instantly.

If your phone is NOT e-sim compatible then there is no other solution and you can NOT use an e-sim card for traveling to China.

Comparison of the best e-sim cards for China

Note that you can NOT buy an e-sim card on arrival in China. All mobile internet providers in China only sell physical prepaid sim cards for tourists, no e-sim cards.

And even if you would be able to buy an e-sim card from one of the China Mobile internet operators it is NOT recommended because of the internet censorship in China.

But luckily there are multiple e-sim providers on the internet that sell e-sim cards for China. Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for traveling in China from one of the well-known e-sim card providers that have proven to be reliable operators.

These are the 3 big e-sim card providers and they sell great e-sim card plans for China. They are tested and reviewed multiple times by Traveltomtom:

Nowadays, you can buy an e-sim card for pretty much every country around the world. Order directly from one of the above e-sim card providers and instantly receive your e-sim card in your email. But before you buy an e-sim card first read all my tips below.

SimOptions also offers international prepaid sim cards for China . These are pre-activated physical prepaid sim cards and will be delivered to your home address before your trip to China and it is plug and play when you arrive in the China. 

Airalo and Nomad only sell e-sim cards for China. 

SimOptions is a very reliable e-sim card provider and Traveltomtom has used SimOptions uncountable times in more than 50 countries around the world. I can totally recommend using SimOptions for ordering an e-sim card. 

SimOptions e-sims are always one of my top recommendations and the SimOptions e-sim card plans for China are not bad either.

Their 5 GB data e-sim plan for $14.90 USD is actually cheaper than an Airalo e-sim card with 5 GB data. However, the SimOptions plan is only valid for 7 days. The same for the 10 GB data plan, which is great value for $21.90 USD and thus for $2.19 USD per Gigabyte, but also only valid for 15 days.

These data-only e-sim cards are provided by SimOptions and are only valid in China. Unfortunately SimOptions doesn’t specify which mobile network operator in China they use, neither is there information if these e-sim cards are 5G ready.

Trust me, when they would be 5G ready SimOptions would mention it, so the max data speed on these China e-sim cards from SimOptions is 4G/LTE.

The SimOptions e-sim cards for China do NOT come with a phone number and they do not offer incoming/outgoing calls or sms services. The validity of these e-sim cards is 1 year and the credit validity starts instantly after installing the e-sim card, even if you are not in China. For more info check the SimOptions website .

Airalo is another very reputable e-sim card provider that is very much recommended by Traveltomtom. Ordering your e-sim card for China through Airalo is done fast and easy. Traveltomtom has used Airalo uncountable times for staying connected when traveling abroad. Very reliable, never an issue and often some of the cheapest e-sim card deals.

Why using Airalo? When it comes to China e-sim cards Airalo has similar e-sim card plans as SimOptions and is therefore also recommended as one of the best e-sim cards for China.

Basically after two days struggling with my local prepaid China sim card I gave up and tried Airalo and suddenly everything worked. No more VPN needed, no more internet censorship. I could use my phone like in any other country around the world.

Therefore you can understand that Airalo is Traveltomtom’s top recommendation when it comes to e-sim cards for China.

The 10 GB data e-sim plan costs $28 USD which is $2.8 USD per Gigabyte, slightly more expensive than SimOptions, but the Airalo plan is valid for 30 days.

The Airalo e-sim cards for China are from Chinacom and operate on the China Unicom 4G/LTE network in China. Unfortunately the Airalo Chinacom e-sim cards for China are not 5G ready. 

In pretty much all the amazing places to visit in China you will find a 4G/LTE signal and the data speed is very good, even on 4G/LTE.

All the Airalo e-sim cards are data-only sim cards without a phone number, so any phone/sms service is NOT supported. An Airalo e-sim card has to be installed within 1 month and after activation the credit validity starts when it connects the first time to a supported network. Last but not least there is Nomad and actually Nomad has the cheapest China e-sim cards plans. Traveltomtom tested them out and it worked totally fine.

The best thing about Nomad e-sim cards for China is that they are 5G ready, this is a big plus compared the 4G/LTE e-sim cards from SimOptions and Airalo.

The Nomad e-sim cards for China are from eSIM Go and are data-only. The Nomad e-sim cards for China are also NOT 5G ready, only 4G/LTE network is supported and they operate on the China Unicom network. Incoming and outgoing calls and sms are NOT supported.

But as I mentioned, Nomad has the cheapest e-sim cards for China and they go as low as $0.98 USD per Gigabyte.

The Nomad China e-sim cards have to be installed on your phone within 30 days and after installation its validity starts when it connects for the first time to a supported network in China. Basically when the plane lands. For more info check the Nomad website .

Why did Traveltomtom already used more than 100s of e-sim cards? I told you before that I travel full time and I am on the road constantly. Per year I use about 40 to 50 prepaid and e-sim cards which makes me the no. 1 sim card for tourists expert.

Holafly sells e-sim cards for China with unlimited data. Traveltomtom is not a fan of e-sim cards with 'unlimited' data, but more about that later.

The Holafly e-sim cards for Albania are data-only and incoming and outgoing calls/sms are NOT supported. These e-sims do also not come with a phone number. The Holafly e-sims operate on the 4G/5G network of China Mobile and are 5G ready.

You can not use a hotspot on these Holafly e-sim cards.

Why 'unlimited'? Because there is a Fair Use Policy and Traveltomtom has had bad experiences with this in the past. Suddenly your data speed is slowed down for 24 hours because you apparently used too much data. More info later.

If I hate something then it is slow data speed. Therefore Traveltomtom's is not a fan of e-sim cards with 'unlimited' data.

What is the cheapest e-sim card for China?

The cheapest e-sim card for China is a Nomad e-sim card for just $4 USD , it will give you 1 GB data for 7 days. Airalo has the same plan, but charges $5 USD. These e-sims are only valid in China and do not support calling and texting.

Why ordering an e-sim card for traveling in China

E-sim cards are the easiest way to stay connected when traveling to China in 2024 and you can arrange everything online in just a couple clicks. No more visiting a sim card shop and swapping physical sim cards. Order online, scan the QR code, follow the steps and you are connected in less than 2 minutes.

The most important reason to get an e-sim card is because we would like to stay connected on our trip to China without wasting money on high roaming costs. Our smartphones are pretty useless without a working data connection. Think about ordering a taxi through an app, finding nearby friends, restaurants and bars. Get directions from Google Maps or simply staying in touch with family back home, check your social media apps on long bus rides or your banking apps when paying contactless. 

One of the best things about arriving in China with an activated e-sim card is that you are online as soon as the plane lands. More about when to instal your e-sim card later.

There are so many reasons to stay connected when traveling to China, but the most important reason is that it makes your trip to China so much more convenient and fun!

At the same time we don’t want to waste money on high roaming charges. Many mobile internet operators still charge $3 USD per MB for data roaming, that means just opening the Instagram app will already cost you 20 MB * $3 USD = $60 USD! Not kidding… it still is very common in 2024.

E-sim cards are the easiest way to avoid high roaming charges!

International data roaming plans

So what about overseas data roaming plans? Well, not recommended! Why? Did you read the small letters at what data speed you can use data roaming? Pretty much all mobile internet operators limit the data speed for overseas data roaming plans, which means you end up with 3G data speed, but there is at least 4G/LTE in all the amazing tourist destinations in China and actually pretty much everywhere there is 5G. Only unfortunately all the e-sim cards for China are not 5G ready. 

Uncountable times (mostly American) travel friends have asked me: “can I use your hotspot? My data roaming plan is so slow, it is barely working!” Trust me, get yourself an e-sim card or an international prepaid sim card for traveling to China. Spend a couple dollars extra and be connected all the time instead of begging for WiFi or a hotspot from friends.

Where to buy an e-sim card for China? 

You can only buy an e-sim card for China on the internet through an e-sim card provider. There are multiple e-sim card providers for China. Traveltomtom compared 6 e-sim card providers and concluded that the above mentioned ones ( SimOptions , Airalo and Nomad ) are the best e-sim card providers for traveling to China in 2024.

When buying an e-sim card for China through one of the above recommended e-sim providers you only need your email address and the e-sim card is instantly ready to use after installation. There is no ID registration needed.

On arrival in China

None of the mobile internet operators in China sell tourist e-sim cards, not on the internet, nor in their stores across China. Updated info as per April 2024.

When you arrive in China and you want to buy a local sim card for tourists then only physical prepaid sim cards are available. Tourists can not get an e-sim card.

Flying into China and landing in Shanghai or Beijing then you can buy a tourist sim card for China on arrival at the airport. However, there are NO e-sim cards sold at airports in China, only physical prepaid sim cards for tourists and expect to pay tourist prices when buying a sim card at the airport. 

Keep in mind that these local prepaid sim cards for China come with the full internet censorship of the Great Firewall of China which means you are unable to use Google, Safari, Google Maps, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Gmail, Outlook and so on unless you find a VPN that works in China. 

Trust me you do NOT want to buy a local prepaid sim card in China. I bought one on my last trip to China and it was a disaster. Pretty much useless. On top of that all the e-sim cards mentioned in this article are cheaper.

When to order/activate an e-sim card for China?

You can order an e-sim card for China pretty much any time you want. Most e-sim cards have to be installed on a phone within 1 month after purchasing, some even within 1 year, so you have time.

More important therefore is when do you instal/activate the e-sim card. The validity of some e-sims start straight after the installation, other e-sim cards only start their validity when they connect the first time to a supported network.

Traveltomtom advices to instal your e-sim card on the day of departure to China or before. When in China you will need an internet connection AND a VPN to instal your e-sim card. Many standard VPN’s like Express, Surfshark and NordVPN do NOT work in China. 

Personally it was a struggle to find a VPN that worked, thanks to my Chinese friends. However, the internet speed was very slow. I had no patience for it. It was barely enough to instal my e-sim card for China. 

So my personal advice is to instal your e-sim card for China before you get into the plane and as soon as the plane lands you will be connected without any problems, no VPN needed, no internet censorship from the Great China Firewall.

How to activate an e-sim card

Installing and activating an e-sim card is made as simple as possible. Everyone can activate an e-sim card and the instructions on how to are very detailed and will be send to you instantly by email. But wait, it gets even easier. Just scan the QR code.

When you order an e-sim card plan for China you instantly receive a summery of your order including a QR-code after the payment is processed.

You will see a summary of your e-sim card order including a QR code on your screen and at the same time you will also receive an email with the same QR code. The email contains instructions on how to instal and activate your China e-sim card.

But installing an activating an e-sim card is as easy as scanning the QR code with the same phone where you want to activate the e-sim card on. The QR contains all the information about your China e-sim card.

Once you scan the code you will be guided through a couple simple steps and within less than 1 minute your e-sim card is successfully installed.

Very important is that you are connected to the internet when installing your e-sim card otherwise you will get an error and issues can occur. 

Tip: if you order an e-sim card with the same phone where you want to instal the e-sim card on then ask a friend or someone nearby to take a photo of the QR code and then you scan the QR code from his/her phone and start the installation.

Things to know before ordering an e-sim card for China

Here are some general tips for using e-sim cards when traveling abroad. These tips do not only apply for China e-sim cards, but are things you have to know before buying an e-sim card in general. 

Make sure your phone is unlocked

To make sure you didn’t miss this, let me say this again: e-sim cards only work in UNLOCKED phones. If your phone is unlocked then you can use any e-sim card without any problems. 

If your phone is locked then ask your mobile internet provider from your home country to unlock your phone before your trip to China. It is likely that your mobile internet provider will charge you a fee for unlocking your smartphone. 

If you are unable to unlock your phone you can look into getting a portable WiFi for staying connected when traveling to China or better… bring a second unlocked phone on your trip to China and use it as a portable WiFi device.

Which smartphones support e-sim cards?

Another very important thing you have to check before buying an e-sim card is if your smartphone supports e-sim cards. If you have any of the latest smartphones then there is no need to worry, all new smartphones of the well known brands support e-sim cards. 

The fastest way to find out if your phone is e-sim compatible is by asking Google the question: is my (your phone model) e-sim compatible? Simple as that!

Can I trust these e-sim card providers?

All the e-sim card providers for China recommended above ( SimOptions , Airalo and Nomad ) are reputable e-sim card providers reviewed and tested by Traveltomtom. All of them are licensed third party companies and resellers that partner or work directly with the mobile internet providers in China.

Traveltomtom has successfully partnered for several consecutive years with SimOptions and Airalo. Nomad is a fairly new partner of Traveltomtom, but has so far proven to be a reliable e-sim card provider. All e-sim card providers have their own Helpdesk which you can contact may you encounter any problems or in case you want to claim a refund.

Traveltomtom does NOT sell China e-sim cards, only RECOMMENDS you to use e-sim cards for traveling to China. 

Can I keep my phone number from home with a China e-sim card?

Yes, you can and this is for many people a reason to order an e-sim card to stay connected when traveling to China. An e-sim card can be used next to your physical or e-sim card from your home country at the same time. You do not need a dual-sim phone for using an e-sim card. 

So you can have multiple e-sim cards installed on your phone? Yes, no problem at all!

For example: you can turn off the mobile data from your sim card from home but still use it for texting and calling. Your new China e-sim card you can be used at the same time just for data to ensure you are not wasting money on high roaming costs. 

This is also the trick to keep receiving sms for example for OTP (one time password) sms to login to applications. 

Switching between physical and e-sim cards is a matter of turning them on/off in the settings. Just always make sure your sim card from home is switched off for data roaming.

Can I make phone calls with a China e-sim card?

No, unfortunately there are no e-sim cards for China available that include calling and texting. All the e-sim cards from Nomad, Airalo and SimOptions are data-only e-sim cards and any incoming/outgoing calls/sms are not supported.

Does a China e-sim card come with a phone number?

No, none of the China e-sim cards that you can buy on the internet come with a phone number which also means you can not receive any phone calls or sms.

Can I use 5G on a China e-sim card?

Yes, the Nomad e-sim cards for China are 5G ready as of April 2024. This in contrast with Airalo and SimOptions e-sim cards for China which only support 4G/LTE network.

I hope SimOptions and Airalo step up their game, because the China 5G network is very extensive and there is pretty much 5G everywhere.

Are there e-sim cards for China with unlimited data?

None of the by Traveltomtom recommended China e-sim cards for tourists include unlimited data.

Even if you would come across e-sim card providers that offer e-sim cards for China with unlimited data then make sure the unlimited data is on max data speed. Mostly the data speed is capped after you used X amount of Gigabytes. 

Holafly is an e-sim card provider that sells e-sim cards with unlimited data for China, but does NOT specify what is the exact so-called Fair Use Policy (FUP).

Traveltomtom does NOT recommend China e-sim cards with unlimited data plans. There are always restrictions. And on Holafly sim cards I experienced a reduce in data speed after using more than 2 GB per day. After I contacted support they explained me that I had to wait for 24 hours until my data speed was restored to normal. 

Those 24 hours were a nightmare as my data speed was barely enough to use WhatsApp. Social media was not even loading! 

Again, Traveltomtom does NOT recommend e-sim cards for China with unlimited data. But if you think you will never use more than 2 GB per day, then this might be your favorite e-sim card.

But the question is what is 'unlimited' if the FUP only allows you to use 2 GB data per day on max data speed. The Airalo Chinacom e-sim card gives you 10 GB data as well as the Nomad e-sim card for China .

These e-sims offer a lot of data and there is no real need for an e-sim card with unlimited data unless you want to upload your whole camera roll to a Google Drive or iCloud via 4G instead of WiFi.

There are a lot of different specifications per e-sim card. Another reason why I advice you to take a close at my comparison of the best e-sim cards for traveling to China in 2024 before choosing your favorite.

Are e-sim cards the best way to stay connected when traveling to China?

E-sim cards are the easiest and fastest way to get data on your phone when traveling to China, but are they also the best way to stay connected when traveling to China?

There are 3 ways to stay connected when traveling to China:

Local prepaid sim cards

International prepaid sim cards.

• E-sim cards 

Let’s compare e-sim cards, local prepaid sim cards and international prepaid sim cards, for you to find out what is your preferred way of staying connected.

If you use a lot of data then local prepaid sim cards are often a cheaper way to stay connected, depending on the length of your trip. Local prepaid sim cards mostly offer bigger data plans than e-sim cards and on top of that local prepaid sim cards come often with unlimited local calls and sms.

First of all a local China prepaid sim card can only be purchased on arrival in China in a phone store or at the airport and NOT on the internet.

Second, as said multiple time before, a China local prepaid sim card is pretty much useless for Western tourists as all our applications are blocked. Not only Social Media, also everything related to Google, so good luck browsing the internet. What about VPN’s? All the well-known VPN’s are also blocked.

On top of that buying a sim card in China is also not cheap. The cheapest tourist sim card at Shagnahi Airport was $21 USD and came with 20 GB data.

China Mobile

As the most important mobile network corporation in China, this company is the leader with more than 900 million mobile subscribers. This number makes China Mobile the largest mobile phone operator in the world.
