All power sockets in Mallorca provide a standard voltage of 230V with a standard frequency of 50Hz.

You can use all your equipment in Mallorca if the outlet voltage in your own country is between 220V-240V. This is the case in most of Europe, Australia, the United Kingdom and most countries in Africa and Asia.

If the standard voltage in your country is in the range of 100V-127V (which is most common in the US, Canada and countries in South America) you might need a voltage converter in Mallorca.

The standard frequency in Mallorca is 50Hz. If this frequency differs from the frequency used in your home country, please use caution when plugging in your devices. With so much to see and do, discovering all the delights of Spain can take a bit of planning. It’s important to arm yourself with knowledge, to make sure you see all the delights this country has to offer (as well as sampling the best tapas bars).

Spain travel adaptors: which type do I need?

You will need to consider what to pack, to ensure you can use your personal electrical appliances safely whilst abroad. This normally includes the use of a  travel adaptor , which is a device that simply allows you to plug any UK electrical appliance into a foreign electrical socket. It is important to note that it does not convert the voltage or frequency.

For Spain there are two associated plug types, types C and F. Plug type C is the plug which has two round pins and plug type F is the plug which has two round pins with two earth clips on the side. Spain operates on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz.

Voltage converters and transformers

Electricity supplies worldwide can vary from anything between 100V and 240V. It can be extremely dangerous to use an electrical appliance that is rated at a voltage different from the supply.

As voltage can differ from country to country, you may need to use a voltage converter or transformer whilst in Spain. If the frequency is different, the normal operation of an electrical appliance may also be affected. For example, a 50Hz clock may run faster on a 60Hz electricity supply.  Most voltage converters and transformers come supplied with plug adaptors, so you may not need to buy a separate travel adaptor.

All converters and transformers will have a maximum power rating (AMPS or WATTS) so make sure that any appliance you intend to use does not exceed this rating.

Dual voltage rated appliance

You can determine whether you’ll need to use a converter or transformer, by looking at the appliance rating plate.

A dual voltage rated appliance will display for example ‘INPUT: 110-240V’ on the body of the appliance or its power supply. This means that you will not need a converter or transformer but just a travel adaptor, because Spain operates on a 230V supply voltage, which is within the 110-240V range that the dual voltage appliance operates on.

Single voltage rated appliances

In Spain the supply voltage is 230V. If the appliance is a single voltage rated appliance, it will need to operate at the same voltage as the supply voltage of the country i.e. 230V. If this is not the case it should be used alongside a voltage transformer or converter to allow the appliance to work safely and properly.

Converters and transformers perform a similar function, but their applications differ. Converters are typically used with appliances that operate for a short duration (1-2hours), whilst most transformers can be used alongside appliances that operate continuously.

It’s important to understand that some travel adaptors are not suitable for any appliances that require an earth connection. These types of travel adaptors should only be used with double insulated equipment, which will be clearly marked with the symbol shown below.

That’s a good thing—the last thing you want to do is waste precious vacation time looking for a proper adaptor plug for Spain when your phone is dead!

As someone who lived in the country where I used both American and European appliances, I’m well versed in which plug Spain uses.

In this guide to electrical plugs in Spain, I’ll show you the power plugs and sockets to expect , plug types, and voltage, as well as share where to buy a travel adapter for Spain if you need one!

Which Power Plugs Does Spain Use?

When it comes to plugs in Spain, which ones do Spaniards use?

Spain uses Type C and Type F plugs.

Both Type C and F plugs consist of two round prongs (aka pins). However, there are a few small differences—although both will work in outlets in Spain.

The Type C plug, or “Europlug,”  is the most commonly used plug internationally . You actually will find the unearthed Type C plugs in almost every European country! There are two Type C plugs with differently shaped heads, the normal one that is used for low energy-consuming appliances and a higher amp, round version for things like hair dryers, heaters, etc.

Type F plugs (also called “Schuko plugs”) are similar to Type C, except that they are round and have top and bottom indentations with conductive clips in them to earth the appliance.

Now, that you know which plugs to look for you may still be wondering, “What outlets does Spain use?”

As far as which outlets Type C and F pins fit into, you’ll find Type F sockets to plug your electronics into throughout Spain. These round sockets in Spain are recessed into the wall, so you’ll need a round adaptor head to fit inside.

It’s important to note that you may find ungrounded, un-recessed Type C sockets in Spain from time to time (although they are now illegal in most countries). Your appliances that require more “juice” may not charge as quickly or work in these sockets. I’ve only found them in bathrooms in very old buildings where they are intended to be used for low-energy-consuming appliances like electric shavers.

Do I Need a Travel Adaptor for Spain?

Yes, you’ll need to bring a travel adapter if you’re traveling to Spain from a country that uses a different type of plug. These will allow you to plug in devices that have a differently shaped plug.

For example, travelers from America, Canada, and the UK all need a Spain adaptor plug!

What Plug Adapter Do I Need for Spain?

You have a few options when it comes to the best plug adaptor for Spain .

A Universal Travel Adapter is an excellent choice for charging your personal electronics abroad. These adaptors are compact and compatible with the plugs and outlets of multiple countries around the world (US, EU, UK, and Australia)!

This one takes input from multiple countries and charges up to 6 devices at a time. Universal adaptors are good for backpackers who want to travel light while traveling to multiple countries.

My personal favorite travel adaptor plug for Spain is a simple Type C adaptor like this one . It’s compact and lightweight, and I can plug in multiple devices with the USB or USB C inputs.

I don’t need a universal adapter when I’m only going to Spain (or other European countries like Portgual ). On longer trips, I prefer to bring two—one for my bedside and one for elsewhere.

I also like to bring separate power adapters for Spain like these that I can leave on my laptop or other items with prongs that need to stay plugged in.

I’ve met many travelers over the years who use a power strip to charge multiple devices like laptops. Not only are plugs sometimes hidden away behind furniture, but it’s convenient when you’re traveling long term and have many devices to charge.

Besides, it’s always nice to offer an open socket to other travelers or digital nomads, too!

Please note that plug adaptors do not convert voltage or frequency (more on that, below).

Where to Buy an Adaptor Plug for Spain

The easiest and quickest way to get an adaptor plug for Spain is on Amazon . On Amazon, you can get a good deal on a Spain adaptor, which is often sold in multiples.

The ability to check the reviews to see if people have used the plug in Spain successfully offers additional peace of mind, too!

If you forget to order a plug adaptor before your trip , you can purchase travel adapters at airports, travel or tourist stores, or electronics stores. (If you’re already in Spain, check your nearest Ale-Hop for all sorts of phone and electronics accessories).

Do I need a Voltage Converter for Spain?

Let’s dive into the details of voltage for Spain to determine whether you need a voltage converter in addition to an adapter.

The voltage in Spain is 230 V and the frequency is 50 Hz.

This is the same in most European countries. So, if your appliances are rated the same, you won’t need to worry about getting a voltage converter for Spain. A travel plug adaptor for Spain is all you need! 

If you’re coming from the US or Canada (which uses a different voltage and frequency from Spain) you’ll need to look at your devices to verify they are dual-voltage.

Fortunately, most electronic devices like laptops, phone and tablet chargers, and camera chargers are dual voltage . Even better, many hair styling tools like hair dryers and flat irons (known to be problematic for some travelers) are dual voltage these days. Do note that while some devices convert voltage automatically, some require you to flip a switch between voltages.

That means you can use them in both your home country (the US or Canada, in this example) and in Spain —without a voltage converter! A travel adapter plug for Spain would be all you need.

Editor’s Note: If you plan to travel a lot (or are spending extended time in Spain), you may want to consider getting European hair tools upon arrival. They are a little more expensive than in the United States, but worth it for frequent travelers.

To check if your device is dual voltage, look for “100-240V 50/60Hz” printed on the device. If you see that, the device will work with all voltages and frequencies used worldwide .

(Sometimes, the numbers vary a little, but that’s okay as manufacturers account for small variations. Technically, appliances rated between 220V and 240V are safe to plug into Spain outlets using an adaptor only. 60 Hz electronics will also operate on 50 Hz.)

On the unlikely chance your appliances don’t have two numbers side by side, that means they are single voltage and won’t work in Spain without a voltage converter. Get a voltage converter for Europe . ⤵

Do i need an adaptor or converter for spain.

You most likely only need an adapter (also spelled adaptor) to use the power outlet in Spain since most smartphones, laptops, and other devices are dual-voltage, meaning they can withstand both 110V and 220V electricity without damage. On the odd chance you’re using a device that cannot convert 110V to 220V (a single-voltage device), you would need a voltage converter for Spain. 

Do I need a Type C or F adapter for Spain?

Converters convert voltage which is done in computers, tablets, and other common electronics by an internal transformer. You can double-check your devices, but they should say that they are dual-voltage. Look for something with two numbers like “100/240 V.” To power up your phone on one of the plug sockets in Spain, you’ll verly likely only need a travel adapter. 

Do American cell phones work in Europe?

Yes, most of the newer American cell phones with GSM capabilities will work in Europe. Can I use my hair dryer in Spain?

If your hair dryer is dual voltage, you should be able to insert it into Type F plug outlets in Spain with just a travel plug adaptor. Please be aware that an adapter only changes the shape of the plug. Since it doesn’t convert the voltage or frequency of the supply, you’ll need to check that your hair dryer is rated dual voltage. Fortunately, many companies now make travel hair styling tools that are dual-voltage. I particularly like the Babyliss travel hair dryer , which is powerful and compact!

Can I use my curling iron or straightener in Spain?

If your curling iron or flat iron is dual voltage, you should be able to insert it into Type F plug outlets in Spain with just a travel plug adaptor. Please be aware that an adapter only changes the shape of the plug. Since it doesn’t convert the voltage or frequency of the supply, you’ll need to check that your hot tools are rated dual voltage. Fortunately, many companies now make travel hot tools that are dual-voltage. For example, I’ve used this Conair Travel Curling Iron without issue for years.

So please don't try to use an adapter on them for high-power equipments like hair-dryer or even battery chargers. We keep "D" and "M" plugs in our database as we don't know your exact destination and you might find one next to a bed table. As a rule of thumb , you will probably be fine with the type "G" in hotels and big cities.

Be warned if your converter cannot change the frequency. It is not advisable to use your devices. But if you do (at your own risk), exercise special caution with motorized devices and those containing electronic chips, such as clocks, shavers, and medical devices.

To be sure, check the label on your devices. Some devices never need a converter. If the label states 'INPUT: 100-240V, 50/60 Hz' the device can be used in every country in the world. Ticket prices and travelcards

Fares for Moscow's public transport network are the same for every mode of transport making it really easy to travel. See all the different tickets here !

Troika Ticket

This is the most economical option if you're spending a few days in the Russian capital. The card can be purchased and recharged at various station machines or even with the special Moscow Metro application. Your balance can be checked on the app or in the small yellow terminals inside the metro stations. A trip works out at ₽ 42 ( US$ 0.50), but if you change transport within 90 minutes, you'll only pay ₽ 23 ( US$ 0.20) for the next trip.

The day ticket for the Moscow metro can be purchased at any of the stops in the city. The price is ₽ 265 ( US$ 2.90) per day and ₽ 500 ( US$ 5.40) for three days.

90-Minute Ticket

The most convenient card if you want to take several types of transport within an hour and a half period. It costs  ₽ 65 ( US$ 0.70) per person and allows one metro ride and an unlimited number of trips on other types of public transport in Moscow during the time of its duration.

Do you know what the most populous city in Europe is? Most people wouldn’t guess that it is actually Moscow. There are approximately 13 million people in the Moscow metro area, which amounts to approximately 1/10th of all Russians.

This former capitol of the Soviet Union is still the political and financial center of Russia. Just because it is a current business and government city, in no way means that it is boring and not worth a visit. Assuming the political tensions get solved, Moscow is a fascinating city you need to visit.

While lots of people can’t explain the nuances of Russian architecture, most can spot and appreciate it immediately. One of the best ways to see the historic sites is by taking a boat tour down the Moskva River that meanders through the city.

Overall, navigating the city isn’t difficult as there is phenomenal and cheap public transportation (roughly 30 rubles/35 cents per ride). You can also use a cheap Uber on the three ring roads that circle the city at various distances from the center.

The House with Animals

This former church is famous for the terracotta reliefs of animals that adorn the front of the building. It is a favorite of locals, and famous around the world. It was built in approximately 1900.

Bunker 42 (Cold War Museum)

Tunnel at Bunker-42, anti-nuclear underground facility built in 1956 as command post of strategic nuclear forces of Soviet Union.

Americans weren’t the only ones afraid during the Cold War! You can now discover the most secret and secure Bunker of the USSR, Bunker 42. Also known as the Cold War Museum . This former military communication center is now a museum. I recommend this tour that will take you on a private two hour visit of Bunker 42.

Tank Excursion and Bazooka Shooting in Moscow

For real – you can book this tour and actually ride in a tank and shoot off military grade weapons. While that’s not my cup of tea, I know tons of guys would absolutely love to shoot a bazooka!

Dormition Cathedral

This is another Russian Orthodox cathedral that is located inside the Moscow Kremlin. It is another famous landmark of Moscow. The inside is decorated with ancient frescoes.

The Cathedral of the icon of the Mother of God “Sign”

This cathedral is located in Zaryadye Park (adjacent to Red Square). It is also on the Moskva River. The Cathedral of the icon of the Mother of God “Sign” previously was a monastery.

Komsomolskaya Metro station 

So many of the metro stations are breathtaking works of art. The idea was to create something beautiful that all the regular people could enjoy, or if you are more cynical you could say it was to attempt to show off how well they were doing.

The Round houses at Dovzhenko Stree t

The Round houses at Dovzhenko Street look super cool and futuristic, except like many communist projects didn’t actually work that well. They were supposed to be something new and different from the standard “Soviet Blocks.”

There are a number of problems with this design. Supposedly the acoustics are awful making the apartments perpetually noisy. The inner circle becomes a wind chamber even when it’s not that windy. My favorite weakness is that the trapezoid shape of apartments is hard to decorate and even harder to do maintenance on.

Izmailovo District and Izmailovo Kremlin

This area has to be one of the coolest places to visit in Moscow. It features a park in the middle of Moscow that is over 3x the size of New York City’s Central Park. The Kremlin in Izmailovo is a complex located in the Eastern Administrative District of Moscow that is known as the center of culture and entertainment. The wooden buildings are in Russian architecture of the XVI-XVII centuries (not original).

Tretyakov Gallery

For those that appreciate fine art this is where you have to go. The State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow Russia is the best collection of Russian fine art in the world. The museum previously hosted worldwide chess tournaments (I can’t help be think of the Queen’s Gambit).

Kolomenskoe Estate

This reconstruction of a former royal estate is just a few miles southeast of the Moscow city center. Supposedly really detailed historical plans survived, so the reconstruction and current museum is incredibly authentic. It was completed in 2010.

Old buildings of Arbat

Arbat is an old street, and was previously the “nicest place to live in Moscow. Even though it fell into disrepair, it’s location, it’s historical buildings, and the fact that it is a pedestrian street are quickly making it a top place to live again.

The Melnikov House

Located on Arbat street, the Famous house of architect Melnikov designed this house (and Lenin’s sarcophagus). Melnikov designed it at a time when private ownership was outlawed, but got around this restriction by saying it was an experimental design to maximize space. Even though others weren’t built, he was able to keep it.

The New Maiden Convent

The New Maiden Convent, built was built to resemble a mini-Kremlin. It stands out to me because this “convent” was the place where women who were no longer welcome in the royal court were banished to.

Monument to the Conquerors of Space at the Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics in the Cosmopark

The Americans may have made it to the moon first, but the Russian cosmonauts were first in a number of other achievements. This gigantic obelisk pays homage to their accomplishments.

Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve

This royal estate was founded by Catherine the Great. She was Russia’s longest serving female leader. It is now a gorgeous museum!

Stalinist Skyscraper tour

This group of seven skyscrapers are called the Seven Sisters. They were all made in the Stalinist style, and one was previously the tallest building in Europe. If you want to tour them all while learning about their history book here .

Cathedral of Christ the Savior

It’s ironic that a country that was so anti-religion for so long has so many great churches. The Cathedral for Christ the Savior was made to thank Jesus for saving Russia. If you are interested in visiting this and so many other cathedrals in Moscow I recommend this tour that will take you to The Cathedral of Christ the Savior many other popular churches in Moscow.

Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God

This church on Red Square is reconstruction of what was previously there but ordered to be destroy by Joseph Stalin. It is a travesty thinking of all the beautiful things that Stalin destroyed to attempt to implement his vision.

Zaryade Park

Zaryadye Park is one of the main tourist attractions in Moscow. It is located directly next to the Kremlin, and offers truly amazing views. It is also famous for its “floating bridge” and the fact that there are so many unique features underneath it.

Church of Sign of Blessed Virgin in Dubrovitsy Znamenskaya

The Church of the Theotokos of the Sign (Dubrovitsy), or The Church of the Holy Sign of the Mother of God is located in a village amed Dubrovitsy about 20 miles south of Moscow. It is another Russian Orthodox church, but what makes this one unique is that we aren’t 100% sure who made it, or why is has a style that is completely different than other churches of the time.

The Church of Nicholas The Wonderworker

I love the unique style of the Russian Orthodox churches in Moscow. The golden onion domes stand out across the globe. This church dates back to 1657, though it has been partially destroyed a few times since then.

Moscow University

Moscow University is one of the Seven Sisters that are the “Stalin Skyscrapers.” Previously it was the tallest building in Europe. Though it has lost that title, it is still the tallest “educational building” in the world.
