Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper (born June 22nd, 1953), better known simply as Cyndi Lauper, is an American singer and songwriter. She hails from Queens, New York.

In the popular imagination, at least, Lauper is arguably best known as a little bit of a one-hit wonder; it’s certainly true that ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun’, her international smash hit in 1983, is the most enduring track from her back catalogue, but the truth is that Lauper boasts a far more impressive track record than most artists to be tagged with the one hit wonder label - in fact, she was the first female solo artist to see her first four singles chart in the top five on the Billboard singles rundown in the U.S, with ‘All Through the Night’, ‘Time After Time’ and ‘She Bop’ also making the cut.

Her awards history, too, is incredibly impressive; she’s scooped gongs at the Grammys, Emmys and Tonys - one of only twenty performers ever to do so - as well as picking up awards from Billboard, MTV (at the VMAs) and VH1. She’s also become well known over the years for her charitable activities, in particular as a champion for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender causes; she was asked to perform at the 2013 second term inauguration ceremony of President Barack Obama in recognition of her efforts over the years.

Live reviews

Cyndi Lauper is an icon... When I was young I remember stealing my older sister's "She's So Unusual" cassette tape to rock out to "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and all the other upbeat, empowering pop songs on this memorable debut album. I felt so cool and grown-up. I may have also “borrowed” some of my sister’s clothes, but let’s not tell her about that! Decades later, I own my own copy of the album on iTunes, but not much else has changed. I still envy all her cool funky outfits and admire her relentless determination to be her uncompromising and inspirational self. In concert, Cyndi Lauper has not missed a beat. I saw her for the first time touring with Deborah Harry from Blondie and it turned out to be the best girls’ night ever!!! Lauper performs all her best hits, puts on a great show, and provides fun and on-point audience interaction. You will end the night feeling great about life, carefree, and ready to embrace every opportunity that life may throw at you to “just wanna have fun.” Cyndi Lauper is a great role model for girls of any age. Though her fun pop style and uncanny high notes may draw you in, her personal stories, deeper songs, obvious humility and kindness, and personal dedication to many and varied causes will earn your following long-term.

Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper has one of those universally recognisable stage names that spans countries and generations all at once. The record breaking songstress injected some much needed angst and rock into the modern pop charts and was seen as something very different during the time of her breakthrough. With ten albums in her discography and 50 million records sold, designing a career defining setlist is no easy feat for Lauper yet her fans are receptive to most material played this evening.

Her evocative stage persona and passion for performance is really inspiring for younger artists. During a large amount of the show you forget that Cyndi is actually now in her 60s yet still demonstrates the power and abilities of a performer half her age. She clearly wants the fans to have the best night when coming to watch her perform so throws herself into renditions of mega-hits such as 'I Drove All Night' and the timeless 'Girls Just Want to Have Fun' which of course brings the house down. She is an admirable performer and a true figure in female empowerment within the music industry.

Cyndi can do it all! Great venue and wonderful sound. She acknowledged the Orlando tradgedy then did an amazing show, which was exactly what we needed. The mix of classics and country was a perfect balance. Highlight? The entire venue singing along with "True colors" Ms. lauper being presented with a rainbow flag and wrapping it around herself like a blanket. We love you Cyndi and thank you a bit of a relief from the hard parts of life.

Seen her open last night for Rod Stewart at Tinley Park, IL. She's absolutely phenomenal. She looks and sings as good as ever and great performer. Her band is fantastic. Great story teller and she's funny too. Rod Stewart has always been great but finally got to see prob the most talented performer from the 80s era of music and she and her band did not hesitate to deliver. Love ya Cyndi.

Boy George was excellent. He has a surprisingly powerful voice, great stage presence and a dozen people backing him up. Jean Genie a real treat cover as was Get it On. Cyndi needs to shut up and sing. Singing voice great, speaking voice grates. Long stories and rants a bore. Rosie is still just bitter and angry. Great show over all though.

Truly disappointed. If you want to experience a political rally with someone telling you how to think (with a bit of music mixed in) then this is the show for you !

Big speech, followed by song, then MORE politics, song, etc... many people saying same thing...we went to see concert & enjoy, instead we get political rally...

Was a stunning show at Horncastle Arena in Christchurch apart from one thing. I was HIGHLY disappointed there were no big screens up and running and the ONE screen that was going on stage behind Cyndi was not even of her! It was a scenery backdrop. Nearly every person I spoke to said the same thing. No one could see her!!!

Cyndi Lauper was amazing!!!! Her voice was beautiful, she could hold a note like you wouldn’t believe. Lots of energy and she looked fantastic!! Loved that she played recorder and sitar. The crowd really was into her. She came out to sing a duet with Rod Stewart on It Takes Two which was really a nice touch. Love her!

What a talent. I recently saw Cyndi Lauper at the Hollywood Bowl and she was phenomenal. The voice! she still has an amazing voice, she gives the audience bits of wisdom throughout the show and plays all her hits. Hearing "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" backed by an orchestra was delightful. 10/10 would recommend.

Billie Eilish, Cyndi Lauper, Dave Matthews and hundreds more ask Congress to fix concert ticket pricing

H undreds of musicians including Billie Eilish, Dave Matthews, Duran Duran, Cyndi Lauper, the Pixies and Blue Oyster Cult petitioned Congress on Thursday to regulate concert ticket pricing.

“We are joining together to say that the current system is broken,” reads a letter signed by nearly 300 performers and sent to lawmakers. “Predatory resellers and secondary platforms engage in deceptive ticketing practices to inflate ticket prices and deprive fans of the chance to see their favorite artists at a fair price.”

The “ Fix the Tix ” request is specifically addressed to the leaders of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science & Transportation, Sens. Maria Cantwell , D-Wash., and Ted Cruz , R-Texas.

The letter accuses unregulated companies that resell tickets of “siphoning money from the live entertainment ecosystem” by using bots and deceitful advertising practices to sell seats for 20 times their face value, even when shows aren’t sold out.

Ticket sales have hit record numbers since the end of the pandemic and subsequent resumption of touring.

Taylor Swift’s Era’s Tour became the first ever billion-dollar concert series at the close of 2023. When the “Don’t Blame Me” singer visited New York's MetLife Stadium last year, some seats sold for $16,000 . The average resale price for a ticket to Swift’s 2018 Reputation Stadium Tour was about $157, according to Pitchfork, while resold Eras Tour tickets reportedly averaged $3,800.

Though Swift wasn’t a Fix the Tix signee, she has expressed frustration with organizations like Ticketmaster .

Other artists onboard for Thursday’s initiative include Cowboy Junkies, They Might Be Giants, Fall Out Boy, Becky G, Sonic Youth, Green Day and Diplo.

“Predatory resellers do not invest in creating a great live experience or fostering the live music ecosystem,” the musicians told lawmakers. “They simply profit off of the hard work of artists, venues and the crew.”

The average face-value ticket price for a concert in 2023 was just under $80 , according to Pitchfork. That’s a nearly $10 hike from 2019 pre-pandemic pricing.

Some 300 musicians, from Diplo to Nile Rodgers, lobby Congress for ticketing reform

From left, Nile Rodgers, Chappell Roan and Diplo are among the more than 280 musicians who signed a letter to senators in support of concert ticketing reforms.

What do Billie Eilish, Dave Matthews and Diplo have in common?

As of Thursday, they are among the more than 280 popular musicians who have signed a letter urging lawmakers to help reform the concert ticketing system.

Other prominent signatories include Becky G, Duran Duran, Fall Out Boy, Finneas, Graham Nash, Green Day, Nile Rodgers, ODESZA, Chappell Roan, Cyndi Lauper, Indigo Girls, Jason Mraz, Sia, Sylvan Esso and Lorde.

"We are joining together to say that the current system is broken: predatory resellers and secondary platforms engage in deceptive ticketing practices to inflate ticket prices and deprive fans of the chance to see their favorite artists at a fair price," the letter reads.

Live Nation and Ticketmaster tell Biden they're going to show fees upfront

Live Nation and Ticketmaster tell Biden they're going to show fees upfront

It goes on to say that the use of illegal bots, speculative ticket listings and deceitful advertising causes "real harm," including severing the relationship between artists and fans — "which forms the backbone of the entire music industry" — and allowing resellers to profit more than the artists themselves.

The artists are asking the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation to help fix those problems by supporting the Fans First Act , which was introduced by a bipartisan group of senators last December. It was referred to and remains before the committee, which would need to approve it to bring it to a floor vote.

"We, as artists, as music lovers, and as concert attendees ourselves, urge you to support the Fans First Act to combat predatory resellers' deceptive ticketing practices and the secondary platforms, which also profit from these practices," the letter continues. "Predatory resellers should not be more profitable than the people dedicating their lives to their art."

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-M.N., who along with Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, is a co-sponsor of the bill, said in a statement Thursday that she will "keep working to pass this legislation."

"Buying a ticket to see your favorite artist in concert is like going through a gauntlet for too many Americans," Klobuchar said. "This is hurting music fans and it's hurting artists. That's why our bipartisan legislation to improve the ticketing experience has growing support, including hundreds of major musicians."

The Fans First Act focuses on three priorities : ticket sales transparency, consumer protection and stopping bad actors.

Senators are calling on the Justice Department to look into Ticketmaster's practices

Senators are calling on the Justice Department to look into Ticketmaster's practices

It would require live event ticket sellers and resellers to disclose more information about ticket costs and seat location, refund customers the full ticket price when events are canceled and create a reporting website for fans to file complaints.

"Even better, it backs all these regulations up with clear penalties and enforcement," the letter says.

The letter was organized by Fix the Tix , a coalition of over two dozen live event industry organizations led by the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA).

Since its formation in the fall of 2023, it has called on Congress to enact legislation that would protect fans from price gouging, ban fake tickets and ticket-buying bots, end fraudulent resale practices and ensure price transparency, among other reforms.

So how did this letter come together, and why now?

NIVA Executive Director Stephen Parker told NPR over email that industry groups representing artists — such as the Recording Academy and Music Managers Forum - U.S. — are a "critical part" of Fix the Tix's efforts.

"Artists engaged in those organizations heard about our efforts and volunteered to lend their voice to getting comprehensive ticketing reform passed," he said. "The letter is being sent now because time is running out in this Congress for the Senate and House to meaningfully address the predatory resale platforms and ticket brokers that plague fans and artists."

Ticketmaster and its parent company, Live Nation Entertainment, have come under increased scrutiny from artists and fans in recent years who accuse the companies of maintaining a monopoly over the industry ever since their controversial 2010 merger. Live Nation has repeatedly denied the allegations.

The Senate's Ticketmaster hearing featured plenty of Taylor Swift puns and protesters

The Senate's Ticketmaster hearing featured plenty of Taylor Swift puns and protesters

In particular, Ticketmaster's chaotic sale of Taylor Swift Eras Tour tickets in November 2022 left scores of fans empty-handed and outraged. Several state attorneys general launched investigations, a group of Swifties sued the companies for fraud and the Senate grilled Live Nation executives at a January 2023 hearing.

Lawmakers have since introduced several aptly-named bills to reform various aspects of the industry, like the TICKET Act and the BOSS and SWIFT Act .

For its part, Live Nation expressed support for the Fans First Act when it was first introduced in the Senate in December.

"We believe it's critical Congress acts to protect fans and artists from predatory resale practices, and have long supported a federal all-in pricing mandate, banning speculative ticketing and deceptive websites, as well as other measures," it said in a statement shared with NPR.

The Justice Department is said to be ramping up its antitrust probe into Live Nation, with unnamed sources telling the Wall Street Journal and Axios in recent weeks that the agency could file a lawsuit as soon as May.

Billie Eilish, Green Day and other artists back bill that would reform live-event ticketing system

"We, as artists, as music lovers, and as concert attendees ourselves, urge you to support the Fans First Act," the letter says.

Over 250 popular musicians — including Billie Eilish, Green Day and Dave Matthews — signed a letter Thursday urging the Senate Commerce Committee to support a bill that aims to reform the live-event ticketing system.

The Fans First Act , which was introduced and referred to the Commerce Committee in December, hopes to remedy three major issues in the ticketing industry: ticket transparency, consumer protection and preventing bad actors from charging exorbitant resale prices. It is one of several bills introduced in recent years aimed at combating unfair ticketing practices, including the BOSS and SWIFT Act and the TICKET Act .

Fix the Tix, a coalition of live event industry organizations spearheaded by the National Independent Venue Association and Eventbrite, organized the letter, which was addressed to Commerce Committee Chair Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., and Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, the ranking member.

Other artists who signed include: Cyndi Lauper, Jason Mraz, Lorde, Sia, Train, Fall Out Boy, Graham Nash, Becky G and Chappell Roan.

Discontent toward the ticketing industry, especially Ticketmaster, reached a fever pitch in recent years. Fans sued Ticketmaster in 2022 after the company struggled to keep up with the demand for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. The Eras Tour debacle led to a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing to examine Ticketmaster’s outsize role in the industry. (Swift was not among the artists who signed the letter.)

"We are joining together to say that the current system is broken: predatory resellers and secondary platforms engage in deceptive ticketing practices to inflate ticket prices and deprive fans of the chance to see their favorite artists at a fair price," the letter, a copy of which NBC News viewed, states.

Stephen Parker, executive director of the National Independent Venue Association, said in a statement that “the time for comprehensive ticketing reform is now.”

“It is clear that all participants of the live event ecosystem, from artists, to venues, to fans, demand comprehensive ticketing reform and consumer protection against the predatory ticket resale practices that have deeply afflicted live entertainment in the United States,” Parker said.

The Fans First Act would require all ticket sellers and resellers to disclose and break down the total cost of a ticket, including fees. It would also bolster the Better Online Ticket Sales (BOTS) Act, which was introduced in 2016 to prohibit scalpers from using software to buy high volumes of tickets, by further prohibiting the use of bots to purchase tickets.

"We, as artists, as music lovers, and as concert attendees ourselves, urge you to support the Fans First Act to combat predatory resellers’ deceptive ticketing practices and the secondary platforms, which also profit from these practices," the letter sent Thursday states. "Predatory resellers should not be more profitable than the people dedicating their lives to their art."

The senators co-sponsoring the bill are: John Cornyn, R-Texas; Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn.; Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn.; Ben Ray LujĂĄn, D-N.M.; Roger Wicker, R-Miss.; Peter Welch, D-Vt.; Cindy Hyde-Smith, R-Miss; and Mark Kelly, D-Ariz.

Live Nation previously issued its support for the bill, saying the company welcomes “legislation that brings positive reform to live event ticketing.”

The company, which owns Ticketmaster, is expected to be served an antitrust lawsuit by the Justice Department as soon as next month, according to The Wall Street Journal .

Billie Eilish, Diplo, Becky G and More Sign Letter Advocating for Concert Ticket Transparency

More than 250 artists signed a letter advocating for consumer transparency in concert ticket sales on Thursday, April 25

Artists are coming together to advocate for the fans of their live shows.

More than 250 performers including Billie Eilish , Lorde , Green Day , Diplo , Cyndi Lauper , Fall Out Boy and Becky G . signed an open letter addressed to the Senate Committee on Commerce asking them to pass the Fans First Act in order to protect consumers against bots and add more transparency to the process of buying concert tickets.

"As artists and members of the music community, we rely on touring for our livelihood, and we value music fans above all else,” the letter begins.

"We are joining together to say that the current system is broken: predatory resellers and secondary platforms engage in deceptive ticketing practices to inflate ticket prices and deprive fans of the chance to see their favorite artists at a fair price."

The letter went on to describe how deceitful resellers have harmed the relationship between artists and their fans by making their events less affordable for fans — sometimes inflating ticket prices as much as "20x face value."

Too often, fans show up to concerts and live events without a valid ticket because of "predatory resellers" per the letter.

"No one cares more about fans than the artists," the letter reads, before describing how The Fans First Act its advocating for "provides us with more tools to combat predatory resellers and the use of illegal bots."

Per the letter, the act will ban "fake tickets and deceptive marketing tactics that trick our fans into paying more for tickets that may never get them into a show."

Kevin Winter/Getty

It will also require resellers to present the buyer with "the full itemized price of a ticket from the moment a transaction begins" and lay out clear penalties and methods of enforcement for any reseller who violates the act.

"Predatory resellers should not be more profitable than the people dedicating their lives to their art," the letter concludes.

The letter comes days after Coachella 2024 , the popular Indio, California-based music festival concluded.

Fans are also anticipating concert events from Justin Timberlake , the Foo Fighters , Bleachers , Janet Jackson , Blink-182 , Olivia Rodrigo , Usher and more artists, according to Entertainment Weekly .

Concert ticket system is 'broken,' say artists. But some experts say targeting resellers isn't the fix

More than 250 artists signed a letter thursday calling out 'predatory' re-sellers.

The way concert tickets are sold is "broken," according to a new letter signed by more than 250 major recording artists including Billie Eilish, Blue Rodeo and Fall Out Boy.

The letter, signed Thursday, voiced support for the Fans First Act, a bill pending in the U.S. Senate that would prevent speculative ticket sales when a seller does not have a ticket. It also would require "all-in" pricing, outlaw deceptive websites and strengthen enforcement of penalties for bot usage to scoop up tickets.

"We are joining together to say that the current system is broken," the artists said in a letter to congressional sponsors of the legislation.

"Predatory re-sellers and secondary platforms engage in deceptive ticketing practices to inflate ticket prices and deprive fans of the chance to see their favourite artists at a fair price.

"Predatory resellers should not be more profitable than the people dedicating their lives to their art."

Other prominent artists who signed include Cyndi Lauper,  Aimee Mann, Indigo Girls, Lorde, Green Day and Duran Duran.

  • Analysis Quebec wants to stop sky-high prices from ticket resellers. It won't be easy
  • Music fans won't get a break on concert ticket prices in 2024, according to experts

"Buying a ticket to see your favourite artist in concert is like going through a gauntlet for too many Americans," said U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who is a co-sponsor of the bill, in a statement on her website . "This is hurting music fans and it's hurting artists."

It's an issue lawmakers are looking at in Canada , too. Measures such as more transparency, prohibiting bots, and strengthening penalties have already been adopted in some provinces, CBC previously reported . In last week's  federal budget , the Liberal government pledged to work with provinces to crack down on "fraudulent resellers and reseller practices which unfairly drive up prices."

cindy lauper tour

Ticket resale prices keep rising. What's Quebec doing to crack down?

But as ticket prices soar , and resale prices soar even higher (tickets for Taylor Swift's Nov. 14 Toronto show go as high as $11,267 a pair on StubHub, for instance), some experts argue that the letter — and the U.S. bill — are unlikely to change much for fans. And they say targeting resellers isn't necessarily the fix.

The perception is often that artists feel they're being exploited or taken advantage of by the ticketing industry, said Shiraz Mawani, an independent ticketing consultant in Toronto. And he says he can empathize with their frustration.

"But at the same time, it's difficult to find a solution that really works. Because, at the end of the day, it's a supply issue," Mawani said.

"There are only so many seats available."

Sales are booming

Live music sales are booming, according to Live Nation, which owns Ticketmaster. Earlier in April, the company said in a filing with regulators that 2023 brought all-time highs in both attendance and ticket sales . This was powered by big stadium tours from artists including Taylor Swift and Beyoncé, Live Nation said.

Economists have predicted that, this year, music fans will continue to see high prices for big-name artists .

One problem with the letter signed by the musicians calling for ticket reform is that it's directed at resellers such as StubHub instead of Ticketmaster and Live Nation, which hold the market share and "considerable control" in the industry, said Timothy Dewhirst, a professor of marketing and consumer studies at the University of Guelph.

"It's become pretty pricey to deal with Ticketmaster for a lot of the leading concerts that are out there," Dewhirst told CBC News.

Some artists have been vocally critical of Ticketmaster, calling out their extra fees and dynamic ticket pricing. Last year, The Cure's Robert Smith convinced Ticketmaster to refund some of what he said were the "unduly high" fees for tickets for the band's U.S. tour.

Some fans had complained that the fees essentially doubled the price of their tickets. In a post on X last year , formerly Twitter, Smith wrote that he was "sickened."

That was a "pretty notable gesture" on Smith's part, Dewhirst said, but it's not one he sees some of the major artists out there, such as Taylor Swift, replicating.

"People are willingly paying the high prices. She probably figures, 'well, people are willingly able to do that, that's the going rate,' so to speak," he said.

Fix the tix.

Venues and artist groups have formed a coalition called Fix the Tix, led by the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA), that is pushing for passage of the Fans First Act, which they say offers the strongest protections for ticket buyers.

Stephen Parker, executive director of NIVA, said that bill is "the most fan- and artist-friendly ticketing legislation that Congress has ever introduced."

"It makes illegal the abusive, predatory behaviour from predatory resale platforms and ticket brokers," he said, and also calls for a national evaluation of the ticket resale market.

But going after re-sellers, or more specifically, bad actors in the reseller market, won't fix the ticket price problem, said Mawani, the independent ticketing consultant. And limiting reselling could actually limit the supply of tickets for people who aren't able to buy them during the pre-sale or the moment they became available online, he added.

"This act that they're trying to push through does very little on the Ticketmaster side," he said.

"It could be a step in the right direction in terms of continuing the conversation around tickets and resale... but I don't know if this specific bill is going to be the one that's going to change the world."

Ticketmaster told Reuters it backed bans on speculative sales and deceptive websites, as well as better enforcement of anti-bot legislation.

“It is clear that all participants of the live event ecosystem, from artists, to venues, to fans, demand comprehensive ticketing reform and consumer protection against the predatory ticket resale practices that have deeply afflicted live entertainment in the United States,” said Stephen Parker, executive director of the National Independent Venue Association. “The Fix the Tix Coalition is proud to deliver this critical call to action from artists whose fans experience the injustices of the resale market every show. And, we hope their message resonates with Congress, as officials elected to protect their constituents and as Americans who simply love music. The time for comprehensive ticketing reform is now.”

The full letter delivered to Chairwoman Cantwell and Ranking Member Cruz of the Senate Committee on Commerce is available  here . The letter was organized by the  Fix The Tix Coalition , a broad movement spearheaded by the National Independent Venue Association ( NIVA ) and Eventbrite.
