I've lived in Phoenix, Arizona, for over a decade. Here's my ultimate guide to the desert city.

  • Phoenix is a sprawling desert city with a growing food scene and endless outdoor activities.

Insider Today

Phoenix is Arizona's capital city, located slightly south of the central part of the state. The first time I came here, I was in grade school and visiting from Indiana for a family wedding.

I remember thinking that this dusty, cactus-filled city was the place I wanted to be — not just because of the great weather, but because the views were beautiful and the city seemed so vibrant. Zoom ahead to my mid-20s, I decided to make the move to desert life, and I've now lived in Phoenix for more than a decade.

I'm in love with this city — bristly barrel cactus, ultra hot summers, occasional scorpion run-ins, and all. The weather is mild from October through May, mostly between the 60s and low 80s , the desert landscapes are stunning, and in my experience, there's never a shortage of things to do. Plus, I personally haven't seen another city that consistently delivers candy-colored sunsets like Phoenix does.

The city sprawls across 500 square miles , and in the last few years, our population has boomed to 1.6 million , making Phoenix one of the fastest growing metros in the United States. The growth spurt makes sense to me, since I think the city is approachable for everyone, from families and young professionals to college students.

Outdoor activities like hiking are an especially big draw, and there's a welcoming, laidback environment throughout the valley, in my experience.

Since moving here, I've explored Phoenix as much as possible. Core staples like certain iconic eateries, award-winning museums, and stunning hikes have remained the same, but I've also seen a lot of changes throughout town, even in the last five years. I do my best to stay on top of the latest attractions, new buzzy restaurant openings, and love to show visiting friends or family first-hand what I think makes this city so amazing.

Here's my complete guide and best insider tips to exploring Phoenix, including where to stay, what to eat, how to spend your time, and more.

Phoenix Guide: Planning Your Trip

Jeffrey Murray/Getty Images

city of phoenix travel policy

The nation's fifth largest city, Phoenix has been an escape for the rich, famous, and winter weary since The Wigwam and the Arizona Biltmore opened in 1929. While these resorts and others like them still lure visitors with sprawling swimming pools and championship golf courses, Phoenix and the Greater Phoenix area —known collectively as the Valley of the Sun—offer so much more.

From incredible hikes through the Sonoran Desert to UNESCO World Heritage sites, Phoenix is a one-of-a-kind destination. This Phoenix travel guide will help you plan your trip so you don't miss it at its best.

Planning Your Trip

Best Time to Visit : To enjoy the Valley's sunny days and mild temperatures, plan your trip between November and March, keeping in mind that January through March are considered high season (rooms can be hard to come by last minute during Cactus League spring training). However, if you don't mind triple digit heat, you can find amazing deals on resort stays Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Getting Around : The Valley has limited public transportation. Valley Metro Light Rail runs from northwest Phoenix through downtown Phoenix and into the East Valley. Buses operate throughout the Valley but don't always go to points of interest; you will be limited on where you can go if you rely on them. Because the metropolitan area stretches nearly 15,000 square miles, most visitors rent a car or rely on ride-hailing services like Uber.

Travel Tip: With its central location, Phoenix makes a great base for exploring the state of Arizona. Set aside time for a day trip to the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Tucson, or Tombstone.

Things to Do

Phoenix is known for the amazing Sonoran Desert that surrounds it, but there's more to do than pose with a saguaro or take in some rays at the pool. You can explore the Valley's world-class museums (including one dedicated solely to musical instruments) or visit incredible attractions such as architect Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home. History buffs can learn about the native people and early settlers who paved the way for the city we enjoy today, while sports fan can cheer for their favorite professional players. There's so much to do in the Valley that you won't be able to squeeze all into one vacation. Here are a few highlights to get you started:

  • Discover the Sonoran Desert: Hike the popular Camelback Mountain , or explore one of the world's largest municipal parks, South Mountain Park . For more leisure-oriented travelers, jeep tours and horseback rides are less of a physical challenge, and guides share stories about the flora, fauna, and local history. To learn about the plants that thrive in the Sonoran Desert on your own, visit the Desert Botanical Garden .
  • Check Out a Museum: Considered one of the top 20 museums in the nation, the Musical Instrument Museum showcases more than 8,000 instruments from more than 200 countries and territories around the globe. Art lovers, meanwhile, will appreciate the world-renowned Heard Museum's collection of 44,000 Native American pieces. The Pueblo Grande Museum Archeological Park features a prehistoric ball court, replica dwellings, and a museum dedicated to the area's earliest settlers, the Hohokam people.
  • Visit Frank Lloyd Wright's Winter Home: Celebrate Frank Lloyd Wright by visiting Taliesin West , now a UNESCO World Heritage Site ; the 90-minute tour will take you through the famous architect's home, drafting room, and music pavilion. Those interested in seeing more of Wright's work can tour the Arizona Biltmore , on which he served as a consultant, or the Price House (by appointment only).
  • Attend a Sports Game: From the end of February until opening day, 15 Major League Baseball teams participate in Cactus League spring training games at 10 ballparks throughout the Valley. In January, Phoenix hosts the best-attended golf tournament of the year, Waste Management Phoenix Open.

What to Eat and Drink

Phoenix is known for its steaks and Mexican food. Sample prime cuts at The Stockyards , built on what was formerly the world's largest cattle feedlot, or at Durant's , a favorite with celebrities and local politicians. Several resorts boast five-star steakhouses as well. For exceptional Mexican, head to Barrio Café , or try a cheese crisp (a toasted tortilla covered with gooey cheddar cheese) at Macayo's . The latter also claims to have invented the chimichanga when its founder accidentally dropped a burrito in the fryer.

Although you once would have been hard pressed to find much beyond steaks and Mexican cuisine, the Valley today boasts everything from Thai to Ethiopian food. It's also home to what some consider the best pizzeria in the nation, Pizzeria Bianco .

When it comes to cocktails, the city has an emerging scene that is garnering national attention. Bitter & Twisted , Century Grand , and Little Rituals have all been honorees for the Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards , the international equivalent of the James Beard Awards for cocktails.

The Valley also has an impressive craft beer scene with breweries predominantly located in downtown Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, and the East Valley. If you're a fan of sours, be sure to drop by Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. , named the best new brewery in the world when it opened in 2013.

Where to Stay

Whether you want to crawl between the highest thread counts of luxurious sheets inside a Five-Diamond resort, sip cocktails in an eclectic lounge of a boutique hotel, or simply be more budget conscious in a conveniently located hotel room, you have plenty of options in the Valley.

Boasting gorgeous swimming pools, traditional and desert golf courses, and fine-dining restaurants, the resorts that surround Phoenix and Scottsdale are among the best in the country. The iconic Arizona Biltmore , known as the “Jewel of the Desert,” has hosted every sitting president from Herbert Hoover through George W. Bush. (It's also where the Tequila Sunrise cocktail was created and where Irving Berlin wrote "White Christmas" poolside.) The Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Spa is one of the newer luxury resorts and features stunning views of Camelback Mountain.

Many of the Valley's best boutique hotels are located in Old Town Scottsdale. Built in 1956, Hotel Valley Ho is a boutique hideaway that combines mid-century modern architecture with a cool, contemporary vibe. Or, book a room at the Bespoke Inn Scottsdale , a boutique inn with a 43-foot long infinity lap pool and a James Beard Foundation-nominated restaurant, Virtù . In downtown Phoenix, consider a boutique stay at the Kimpton Hotel Palomar or the art-centric Found:Re .

For a budget-friendly downtown experience, try the Hilton Garden Inn Phoenix Downtown . Housed in a building originally constructed in 1932, it features an original Art Deco design and a grand lobby with restored columns and marble touches.

Getting There

The best way to get to Phoenix is by flying directly into Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX). In the East Valley, Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport (AZA) is another option but has far fewer commercial flights. Either way, you'll want to rent a car to explore the city and beyond.

Money Saving Tips

  • Many resorts and hotels deeply discount their rooms during the summer. You can also save tremendously on your car rental if you visit during the summer, and some restaurants even have special summer deals.
  • Several of the Valley’s smaller museums are free while others have free days. The Heard Museum and Phoenix Art Museum are free on First Fridays .
  • City parks throughout the Valley are free. Hike South Mountain or Papago Park , stroll around Tempe Town Lake , or explore Sahuaro Ranch Park .

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport: 10 Things To Know Before Flying In

Here are 10 things every traveler should know before flying into Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

Each year, the city of Phoenix draws in millions of tourists from around the world who are eager to soak up the desert sun, sights, and resorts. To accommodate the ever-growing number of tourists to the city, the Phoenix airport has undergone several renovations and expansions. Though plenty of visitors might know exactly how they wish to plan a stay in Phoenix , some might have questions about how to get around the city's newly upgraded airport. Whether it's a final destination or a long layover stop, here are 10 things every traveler should know before flying into Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

1 Transportation

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport offers plenty of transportation options. The airport features a car rental center that can be accessed for free via the PHX Sky Train . When customers are ready to return their car, they can use the same train shuttle to reach their terminal. The Sky Train also connects to the city's public transit system, allowing passengers to take the Valley Metro Rail or bus to explore downtown Phoenix and all it has to offer . Taxis and rideshare services are also readily available to drive travelers to and from the airport.

The PHX Sky Train runs 24/7, allowing passengers to easily and quickly transfer between terminals.

2 It's Just Terminal 3 & 4

Confusing many first-time fliers in and out of Phoenix, the Sky Harbor International Airport only has a Terminal 3 and a Terminal 4. After decades of use, Terminal 1 was demolished in 1991, while Terminal 2 closed down in 2020 in order to meet the growing demands of modern airline traffic in and out of the city. None of the terminals were ever renumbered.

3 When to Arrive

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the United States. Travelers should arrive at least two hours before their departure flight for domestic flights and three hours ahead of time for international departures. Phoenix Sky Harbor updates its real-time TSA security line wait times on its website.

4 Reduce Wait Time By Using PHX Reserve

There are plenty of ways to make airport security easier , and the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has helped make the process faster by launching its PHX Reserve program, which allows travelers to reserve a time for their security screening. Appointments can be scheduled six days before the flight though walk-in appointments can be booked depending on availability. Passengers have to provide their flight details and the number of individuals in their party. Once registered, users can use the TSA security lane reserved just for passengers who have booked appointments, helping reduce the time spent waiting in security lines.

  • Hours of PHX Reserve in Terminal 3: Available from 4 a.m. to 11 a.m.
  • Hours of PHX Reserve in Terminal 4: Available from 5:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Passengers who are a part of TSA Pre-Check and other trusted traveler programs cannot use their benefits if they choose to utilize the PHX Reserve program lane.

5 A Museum Within An Airport

Art lovers and history buffs alike can pass the time waiting for their connections by viewing art and aviation memorabilia. The Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport features the Phoenix Airport Museum and an Aviation History Collection, free for travelers to view. The Phoenix Airport Museum houses an impressive collection of contemporary art. The Aviation History Collection features a treasure trove of artifacts and historical documents. This collection has been curated to help preserve and share Phoenix's aviation history and the expansion of the city's airport transportation all the way back to the 1920s.

"The Phoenix" mosaic mural designed by Paul Coze can be viewed in the airport's car rental center. The vibrant mural was originally showcased in the lobby of Terminal 2 of the airport until it was closed in 2020.

6 Compassion Corner

In the loudest and busiest part of the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, overwhelmed travelers can seek respite and assistance in the Compassion Corner. Compassion Corner features several amenities and services, including the sensory room, chapel, and Compassion Office. The sensory room is available for travelers who need a break from hectic gates. The chapel is available to all religious and spiritual backgrounds. A Compassion Corner Office has staff members who can help connect passengers to additional accessibility and special needs services.

  • Location: Level 3 of Terminal 4

7 Fitness Trail

Travelers with long connection times can attempt to complete the Sky Harbor Fitness Trail . A little over one mile, this indoor trail was constructed as part of a city initiative to improve the health of Phoenix residents. Along with helping burn off extra energy and anxiety from having to deal with delayed flights , this trail offers incredible views. Without ever leaving the airport, PHX passengers can see several iconic sights, such as the Phoenix city skyline, Camelback Mountain, and the Sandstone Buttes at Papago Park.

  • Location: Gate A30 to Gate D18.

8 The Weather

First thing most people think when they hear Phoenix is: hot. The city is notorious for its hot weather especially in the summer months when the temperature averages well over 100 °F . Along with making sure they're dressed appropriately for the weather, passengers should be aware flight delays sometimes occur due to extreme heat, which makes it impossible for planes to take off .

9 Last-Minute Souvenir Shopping

Along with the ubiquitous stores found in most airports in the United States, such as Harbor News and Brooks Brothers, the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport offers travelers an array of shops unique to the American Southwest. There are many opportunities in Phoenix to explore and learn about Native American culture and purchase authentic Native American souvenirs, starting at the airport. Breathtaking Native American artwork, jewelry, and clothing are for sale along with more kitschy souvenir items, such as chocolate "Rattlesnake Droppings" and Cactus Candy. The PHX Airport has over 30 shops to help satisfy the needs of all shoppers.

10 Dining Options

From grab-and-go food kiosks to dine-in restaurants, the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport features plenty of dining options to meet passengers' dietary needs and time constraints. Food is available for purchase before and after TSA security checkpoints.

Traveler reimbursement is based on the location of the work activities and not the accommodations, unless lodging is not available at the work activity, then the agency may authorize the rate where lodging is obtained.

Unless otherwise specified, the per diem locality is defined as "all locations within, or entirely surrounded by, the corporate limits of the key city, including independent entities located within those boundaries."

Per diem localities with county definitions shall include "all locations within, or entirely surrounded by, the corporate limits of the key city as well as the boundaries of the listed counties, including independent entities located within the boundaries of the key city and the listed counties (unless otherwise listed separately)."

When a military installation or Government-related facility (whether or not specifically named) is located partially within more than one city or county boundary, the applicable per diem rate for the entire installation or facility is the higher of the rates which apply to the cities and/or counties, even though part(s) of such activities may be located outside the defined per diem locality.

Meals & Incidentals

The separate amounts for breakfast, lunch and dinner listed in the chart are provided should you need to deduct any of those meals from your trip voucher. For example, if your trip includes meals that are already paid for by the government (such as through a registration fee for a conference), you will need to deduct those meals from your voucher. Refer to Section 301-11.18 of the Federal Travel Regulation for specific guidance on deducting these amounts from your per diem reimbursement claims for meals furnished to you by the government. Other organizations may have different rules that apply for their employees; please check with your organization for more assistance.

First & Last Day of Travel

  • Phoenix travel guide: A Detailed Guide To This Valley Of The Sun

23 Mar 2023

The state capital of Arizona, Phoenix is known for its warm, humid and harsh climate of the desert. But, if you are someone from the land of snow and cold, you are definitely going to enjoy the amazing sun-kissed weather the province offers its visitor. When it comes to the Phoenix travel guide , the possibilities are vivid and vast for you to look into. If you are still planning on visiting Phoenix but unsure about what to do and where to visit, this detailed Phoenix city travel guide should be helpful enough in guiding you through.

From the best places to visit the most luxurious places to stay at, this guide has everything to help you course through everything.

Best Time To Visit Phoenix?

Phoenix city view

Deserts, unlike the normal places, won’t showcase the extensive changes in its weather. You won’t necessarily find the leaves changing colour or the other season changing phenomenon that commonly happens.

But, you can easily experience the substantial change in the temperature which is definitely everything you need to know about the season. If the dry, formidable toasty heat is something you can bear, visiting during the months of November to April is possibly the best time to visit Phoenix.

Majority of the time, while the rest of the United States is covered in snow and is cold, Phoenix is definitely the complete opposite. Even the locals in the area tend to spend the majority of their time outside in the sunny weather during that time. It is often known as the “snowbird season” and often witnesses a steep rise in prices because of the growing demand.

Make sure to make the bookings two-three months beforehand to get the best prices. It is best suggested to visit either during the beginning or end of the season.

Douse that fire: Open flames banned in Phoenix's natural parks and preserves

The end of campfire season in the Valley is approaching, with two of Arizona's yearly fire bans set to commence on May 1 in the city's natural parks and mountain preserves.

The  Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department's annual open fire ban will go into effect the same day as the Maricopa County Parks and Recreation's annual fire ban.

According to Phoenix, the ban includes smoking and charcoal fires due to the Valley's combination of low humidity, increased temperatures, excessive dry vegetation and frequent high winds in the spring and summer, which pose an extreme fire threat.

Where does the ban apply?

According to the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department, the ban applies to Camelback Mountain, Deem Hills Recreation Area, Lookout Mountain, Papago Park, Phoenix Mountains Park and Recreation Area, Phoenix Mountains Preserve, Phoenix Sonoran Preserve, North Mountain Park, Rio Salado Habitat Restoration Area and South Mountain Park/Preserve.

The ban does not apply to the city's flatland parks.

What does the ban include?

  • Open wood charcoal fires.
  • Propane or gas grills may be used but only in established picnic areas.
  • Smoking outside of enclosed vehicles.

Amid the ban, the city also advises people who smoke in their car to use extreme care with all smoking materials and dispose of items only in their vehicle's ashtray.

The city also allows residents whose properties border preserve lands to clear dry shrubs, brush, and grasses, as well as trim dead branches from trees, within a 10-foot strip of land that serves as a "buffer zone" for brushfires.

According to the Parks and Recreation Department, people living adjacent to the city's preserves should also inspect irrigation lines and pool back-flush hoses to prevent water leakage into the preserves, which can lead to unnatural vegetation growth.
