Clarence Soccer Club Information
The Clarence Soccer Club was rooted in 1971 when Eli Shefter began a low-key soccer program through the town Recreation Department. Also, Ken Kreinheder, the new Clarence High School JV coach, formed a U14 boys travel team that he entered in the Buffalo Western New York Junior Soccer League ( BWNYJSL ). Jerry Oman took the reins in 1972 and the club became officially known as the Clarence Soccer Club, which today is a comprehensive program with competitive travel/premiere programs for youth and recreational, instructional, and elite training programs serving pre-K through adult.
The club was wholly reorganized in 1980 with new bylaws and instituted an elected board of directors. The newly elected board began construction of the Clarence Soccer Center in 1981. This truly was a community effort with construction being done almost entirely by volunteers. The Clarence Rotary Club funded the construction of the building, The Clarence Soccer Center officially opened in 1982 with four fields, parking lots, and a building housing bathrooms, a snack bar, and storage. (The clubhouse was later expanded and then fully renovated in 2006.) 1982 was also the year the first CSC girls travel team entered the BWNYJSL.
In July 1995, CSC hosted its first tournament for competitive travel teams; it immediately became an annual event—the Clarence Classic Soccer Tournament. In recent years, well more than 100 teams annually travel to Clarence to compete.
Between the late 1970s and 2008, CSC took a total of 13 Clarence teams on nine foreign trips, playing competitive and friendly games in Poland, Germany, Mexico, Denmark, Holland, France, Belgium, Spain, Prague, and Austria. The club hosted teams from Mexico and Denmark three times between 1983 and 1988.
The CSC serves some 3,000 youth and families in the Clarence area, and offers a meaningful way for youth and adults to grow personally and athletically, as well as to serve their community through a variety of volunteer opportunities.
The Clarence Soccer Club is a 501c3.

Travel tryouts.
WELCOME TO TOWSON UNITED'S 2024/25 BOYS TRAVEL TRYOUTS!
TRYOUT INFORMATION & POLICIES
Registration : Registration for Travel Tryouts can be found here . All players trying out for Towson United's Travel program must complete the online registration. Walk-ups are permitted but strongly discouraged . Advanced registration is highly recommended so coaches and evaluators may know each player's name, number, and other information during tryouts, and so parents may receive communications containing up-to-date information relating to Travel Tryouts and team selection.
Divisions/Age-Groups : Towson United adheres to the US Soccer Association’s birth year age-group registration, not academic year. As such, our Travel teams in the 2024-25 season encompasses players with birth years ranging from 2010 to 2017.
Fee : No fee to tryout.
Schedule : The 2024/25 Tryout Schedule may he found here , but is subject to change due to weather and other conflicts. Prospective and Returning players must attend at least one (1) tryout to be considered for a team, but the more sessions a player attends the better.
What to Bring/Wear : All players should bring sufficient water for the tryout, cleats/turf shoes, and shin guards. All players must wear a WHITE shirt. Current or returning players SHOULD NOT not wear their uniform.
Check-In : Please allow adequate time for check-in ahead of your tryout. Check-in will be available 30 minutes prior to a players scheduled tryout session. Parents/guardians may accompany players to the check-in process. After checking-in, players will receive two (2) stickers each with a random number to be placed on the front and back of their shirt. Parents/guardians must remain on the sidelines away from all players and must refrain from any communication with any player unless there is an emergency.
Player Evaluations : Coaches from each age-group will determine the format of the tryout. Coaches will be evaluating players on the five criteria: skill, soccer IQ, athleticism, effort, and attitude. More information about tryout evaluation criteria may be found here . Prospective players will be evaluated on their performance at tryouts as well as any other additional information known to the evaluators/coaches. Returning players will be evaluated on their performance at tryouts as well as coach evaluations from the previous season. P lease remember that because you may have been on a Towson United Travel team in the past DOES NOT guarantee a roster spot in the current year .
Goalkeeper Evaluations : Optional goalkeeper evaluations will be conducted for all age-groups 2016 and older. Goalkeeper evaluations will be run by professional goalkeeper coaches from Born To Fly Goalkeeper Academy . The goalkeeper evaluation schedule may be found here .
Selection : Players are selected by a committee of coaches and evaluators, not by one single individual. Once the committee selects players, invitations for an age-group's top (or first team) will be sent via email to the prospective player’s parents. The deadline to accept will be specified in the invitation. If a player declines, a new invitation will be sent to another player to fill that spot. When the first team is finalized, invitations for the second team will be sent out, etc., and the process continues until all teams in the age groups are selected and finalized. We try to keep the time frames short and appreciate prompt responses. Once all teams are selected and finalized, all families will receive an email informing that team selection is complete and that, if they did not receive an invitation, their player was not selected.
"Playing Up" : It is the policy of Towson United not to permit players to "play up" on teams in older divisions. Exceptions may be made for a player demonstrating elite skill, attitude, effort, soccer intelligence, and maturity, and only if that player is able to make the older division's top or "A" team.
2024 BOYS FALL TRAVEL SOCCER TRYOUT SCHEDULE

EVALUATION CRITERIA:
What Do Towson United Coaches Look For in Potential Players?
Tryouts can be a mysterious experience for players and parents alike. Many wonder, “what criteria do coaches use to evaluate players during tryouts?” It is crucial for players to showcase their best individual abilities, while also displaying qualities that make them valuable team members.
The evaluation process during tryouts is multi-faceted, as coaches assess players across various dimensions. Skill proficiency, soccer intelligence, athleticism, work ethic, and attitude are the primary attributes considered by coaches when making their team selections. Below are detailed descriptions of the attributes coaches consider when assessing prospective players. The activities employed at tryouts are intended to showcase these attributes.
1. Skill Proficiency
At the heart of player evaluation lies the assessment of skill proficiency. Coaches carefully observe players’ technical abilities, such as passing, shooting, dribbling, tackling. They look for solid fundamentals, precision, and consistency in execution. Additionally, coaches analyze players’ tactical understanding, decision-making skills, and game awareness. A player who demonstrates a high level of technical proficiency and can make smart decisions on the field stands out during tryouts.
2. Game Awareness & Soccer IQ
At Towson United, game awareness and intelligence are crucial attributes of our players, and so coaches evaluate players’ ability to read the game, anticipate situations, and make effective decisions under pressure. This includes understanding the flow of the game, positioning, and the ability to create scoring opportunities or make crucial defensive plays. Players who exhibit strategic thinking, good communication, and a high soccer IQ, for instance, are more likely to catch the attention of coaches during tryouts.
3. Physical Attributes & Athleticism
Physical attributes and athleticism play a significant role in a player’s evaluation. Coaches consider factors such as speed, agility, strength, endurance, and coordination. Coaches will assess players’ physical capabilities to determine if they have the potential to excel in soccer and at certain positions. However, it is important to note that coaches also recognize that physical attributes can be developed and improved over time with proper training.
4. Work Ethic & Effort
Coaches look closely at a player’s effort and work ethic. They consider whether a player exerts maximum effort during the tryout and exceeds the required intensity level, or if they only demonstrate minimum or low effort and intensity levels. Players that go beyond what is required of them and exceed work rate of fellow prospective players stand out to coaches and increase the likelihood of a favorable evaluation and consideration for a place on a roster.
5. Attitude, Competitive Spirit, & Performance Under Pressure
Coaches focus on players' attitudes during tryouts to determine their commitment, coachability, and overall character. They observe how players respond to instructions, how they interact with teammates, and their level of discipline and dedication. A positive attitude, willingness to learn, and a strong work ethic are qualities highly valued by coaches. Players who demonstrate a growth mindset, resilience, and a team-oriented mentality are more likely to make a positive impression during tryouts.
Competitive spirit and the ability to perform under pressure are also essential for success in soccer. Coaches pay close attention to how players handle high-pressure situations, whether during drills, small-sided games, or full scrimmages. The ability to maintain composure, execute skills, and make sound decisions when faced with challenging scenarios is highly valued. Players who thrive in competitive environments, display a hunger to win, and demonstrate resilience in the face of adversity stand out during tryouts.

Clarence Santana OBITUARY
Clarence Santana December 22, 1947 – December 11, 2021 San Jose Clarence Santana said his final aloha peacefully on the evening of December 11th, 2021 at the age of 73. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii on December 22nd, 1947 to Thelma and David Santana, Clarence was the youngest of four children and spent most of his childhood surfing at all the choice local spots on the island, eating countless plate lunches and sometimes getting in trouble with his mom. He attended Roosevelt High School and was a star fullback for the Roughriders football team. After high school, Clarence moved to California and attended the College of San Mateo. While visiting home during the summer of 1966, he met a beautiful mainland girl from California named Patricia Mullins while she was on vacation with a friend, and she also happened to be from the Bay Area. It was fate. They married in 1967 and soon moved to the South Bay where he finished his degree in Business from San Jose State University. After graduating, Clarence tried many different jobs from managing the old Arby’s on Camden to working for the post office to serving as a Mountain View police officer. Clarence eventually put aside the variety pack of jobs and settled into his new career at Frito Lay, where he worked his way up from a delivery route to being a regional sales manager. Clarence followed his sweet tooth and became a sales manager at both Spreckels Sugar and Ghirardelli Chocolate before ending his career with his own sales company, Santana and Associates.
Clarence was passionate about his involvement with Children’s Musical Theater San Jose, where he served as the President of the Board of Directors for many years. He could often be found cheering in the audience of every production, especially those that starred his son, daughter-in-law, and precious granddaughter. He also coached youth soccer in Cupertino with AYSO and CYSA select teams and later moved into being a referee for several years. He recently assistant coached the dynasty soccer franchise, The Lightning Bugs, in the NorCal soccer league where his granddaughter played with many of her friends from Queen of Apostles School. He loved all of the Bay Area sports teams, especially the San Francisco 49ers, and he never missed a game. He liked to travel and some of his favorite international destinations included Italy, Ireland and England. He enjoyed doing sudoku, finding off the radar Japanese cuisine and cleaning the hardwood floors.
Clarence is survived by Patricia, his beloved wife of 54 years, son Douglas, daughter-in-law Elizabeth and granddaughter Madelyn. He loved his family so much and he will be missed every single day. We know he is enjoying the best luau possible with a giant plate of loco moco and a fresh donut from the Donut Wheel for dessert. Mahalo Clarence. We love you.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Children’s Musical Theater San Jose at 1545 Parkmoor Avenue. San Jose, CA. 95128. Arrangements by Neptune Society with a celebration of life to be held in 2022.

Soccer-CSKA fans chanted racial abuse at Arsenal during Moscow match - Reuters witness
(Adds detail, context)
MOSCOW, April 13 (Reuters) - CSKA Moscow soccer fans chanted racist abuse at Arsenal's black players several times during a Europa League match late on Thursday, a Reuters witness said.
A Reuters photographer at pitch level heard dozens of home supporters make monkey chants at Arsenal's Danny Welbeck and Alex Iwobi when they neared a particular section of the stands when the ball went out of play.
The chants were also heard when Welbeck celebrated his 75th minute goal that brought Arsenal back into the game from 2-0 down, the photographer said. The game ended 2-2.
A third Arsenal player who did not come off the substitute's bench was targeted with the same chants after the final whistle as he jogged to warm down on the pitch at the CSKA Arena, the witness said. The player, who Reuters was unable to identify, was black.
Russia faces increased scrutiny over fan behaviour ahead of the World Cup it hosts starting in June and the country has pledged to crack down on racism.
UEFA told Reuters on Friday that no racist behaviour had been reported to it by match officials at the game.
UEFA said it had opened disciplinary proceedings against CSKA Moscow on Friday for infractions including throwing objects and setting off fireworks. The alleged infractions were not connected to racist or discriminatory behaviour.
The European soccer body said it took allegations of racist behaviour very seriously and it would be grateful for audio or video evidence of any other incident as it required sufficient proof to be able to press charges.
The Russian Football Union declined to comment. Reuters made repeated calls to a mobile number for a CSKA spokesman but there was no reply. An email to the club was not answered.
A spokesman for Arsenal declined to provide a comment for publication.
Football governing bodies have previously taken action in response to racist and discriminatory behaviour at Russian soccer grounds on several occasions.
UEFA last month opened disciplinary proceedings against Saint Petersburg's Zenit over racist chanting and other violations by fans at a Europa League game against Leipzig.
FIFA said last month it was probing racist abuse directed at French players by Russian fans during a pre-World Cup friendly between the countries in Saint Petersburg. (Reporting by Grigory Dukor and Gabrielle Tétrault-Farber Editing by Matthew Mpoke Bigg)

An Exhibition of Juergen Teller's Soccer Photography Opens in Moscow, Just in Time for the World Cup
From ELLE Decor
Juergen Teller has a frank and unusual approach to fashion photography: one day he’s stark naked spooning Charlotte Rampling on a floor of a hotel suite in Paris, the next he’s capturing the reclusive Joan Didion in badass sunglasses for Céline. But a less-exposed side of the German-born provocateur-that of the fanatical soccer fan-will be on view at the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow from June 8, just in time for the World Cup, which is being held this summer in 11 cities across Russia.
Teller’s soccer photos in the exhibition titled “Juergen Teller: Zittern auf dem Sofa” zoom way past the pitch, focusing on his personal connection to the sport. We see him and his family watching the game on TV, twisting their faces in hope and terror; or a star struck Teller arm-in-arm with the Brazilian legend Pélé.
One series, “Naked on the Football Field,” is startlingly confessional: Teller is shown, completely nude, standing atop his father’s grave while smoking a cigarette, drinking a beer, and balancing one foot on a soccer ball. It’s an homage, he says, to his hard-living, sports-hating musician dad, who committed suicide in 1988. “I think I took the photograph to feel closer to him. To try to understand the things we had in common, and the things that kept us apart. Football was certainly one of those things that kept us apart.”
The World Cup arrives in Russia at a moment when relations between the Kremlin and the West are at their lowest level since the Cold War. Teller thinks that, while national rivalry is certainly a part of the game-the players, he says, are "modern-day gladiators duking it out on the world stage”-it’s important not to confuse a country’s team with its government. “Football fans belong to a different nationality, one that crosses borders.”
