Find Your Grand Adventure with a 2024 Guided Tour

2024 guided tours are filling up. find your adventure today.

With an Adventure Cycling Guided Tour, you can count on five things:

  • Curated experiences traversing the histories, cultures, and landscapes of the U.S.
  • A tour type to fit your travel style
  • Small groups of 10-15 participants, except for our larger Fully Supported Events
  • A fully planned trip, without the worry of routing, navigation, or reservations, from an experienced organization
  • Warm fuzzies knowing your Guided Tour purchase supports a nonprofit and its mission, not a for-profit company

We’re excited to hit the road with you!

Our goal is to facilitate a life-changing journey with a Guided Tour that fits your needs. Our Guided Tours provide a range of experiences: long weekend to epic, pavement to dirt, historically focused to earning the scenic vistas. They also come in a variety of lengths and difficulties as well as different levels of support and price points. We offer everything from self-sufficient nights under the stars to fully catered experiences and inn-to-inn options.

Every tour comes with knowledgeable Tour Leaders, routing, navigation, and reservations. All you have to do is participate! Some tours provide opportunities to get to know your fellow riders better, such as group-made meals and grocery shopping, while other types of tours are less interactive. Participation in these small group activities on some tour types is all part of the Adventure Cycling experience.

“Without a doubt, the best part of the tour was the friendships we made. We came from all levels of experience. Everyone was supportive. Every single day, no matter what the difficulty of the day, we laughed.” – Sam, Tour Participant

Types of Tours

We have a variety of tour formats that suit different styles of touring. All come in different lengths and levels of difficulty, which we call Adventure Levels, ranging from Level 1 to Level 5. Generally, our tours have between 10 and 15 participants, with the exception being our larger Fully Supported Events.

Self-Contained This type of touring is all pedal power and no vehicular support. All shared gear is carried by the group, and cooking responsibilities rotate among its members. A majority of nights are spent outdoors under the stars. An indoor stay or restaurant may be sprinkled in just when you need it the most.

Inn-to-Inn This is the type of tour for those of us who prefer the comforts of a cozy bed. As the name suggests, each night is spent indoors. Breakfasts and dinners are enjoyed in restaurants. Although there is no vehicle support, you’ll only need to carry the minimal gear of your clothes, toiletries, basic repair items, water, and a bag lunch for the day.

Van-Supported If you prefer touring without the load of a full set of panniers, but you still love camping, we have a van and trailer to haul your gear. Just worry about pedaling. Carry nothing more than water/lunch/snacks and maybe some rain gear if the weather’s dodgy. You’ll still have fun with your partner rotating on camp cooking duty. But not to worry, on certain tours, there are occasional restaurant meals and indoor stays.

Fully Supported and Family Adventure  Events The top level of support! Meals are catered. Luggage is hauled. Starry night camping for those into tents and motel options for those who aren’t. Water and snack stops along the route. Just enjoy the riding, the scenery, and the people to your front and back. These tours are larger in size (20–50 participants) and staffed by several tour leaders all looking out for you.

Education Not sure you’re ready to take the leap into full-on independent touring? Our Intro to Road and Intro to Gravel Touring & Bikepacking courses help you break down the basics. There’s some in-person classroom work before setting out as a group on a short self contained tour. We also offer Leadership Training Courses for those experienced in bike touring but want to start leading their own groups.

“This was my first organized multiday trip. I was traveling solo and I had a wonderful time. I could set my own pace and never felt rushed. The food was fantastic and there was lots of it! I can’t say enough good things about the leaders. I will definitely sign up for another one.” – Kelly, Tour Participant

Doing Good with Every Pedal Stroke

Adventure Cycling is a nonprofit. Every Guided Tour purchase supports our mission of inspiring, empowering, and connecting people to travel by bicycle.

For nearly 50 years, we’ve been researching and mapping one of the largest bicycle route systems in the world. And we’re not done yet. Our programs focus on making bicycle travel more accessible to more people through mapping short and long routes, hosting educational resources and events, and creating an open, supportive community for all riders.

All of our tours are listed below. If you have any questions, give us a call or reach out through our online chat. We’re here for you — because Your Adventure Awaits!

I loved everywhere we got to see.”  — Jeff, Tour Participant “ I love the little towns, particularly Patagonia. Tombstone was interesting but did not get to see much of it. Bisbee is a fascinating and historic community. The roads were generally fine and not too busy. The terrain was sufficiently challenging, but not intimidating for this early season rider who was not in top shape.”  — Stephanie, Tour Participant

coast bicycle tours

Let’s start with the most pivotal intrinsic. Our most Southeastern state offers nothing but three season comfort. Fall and Winter days are consistently sunny. For a glorious week you can forget the coat and boots. Our design plays to those rich visual and natural attributes unique to Central Florida. On back roads or dedicated cycling infrastructure, this trip showcases the big Cypress that define interior Florida’s wildly lively watersheds. As well as the stately century-old Oaks fringed with Spanish moss, synonymous to the region’s Southern heritage.

On routes that key on quiet, quartz sand beaches and mesmerizingly blue-green lagoons, we dismount to glimpse a sea turtle, or manatees. Arriving for Spiny lobster and Stone crab seasons, our groups settle in, at day’s end, to the charm of an old-Florida lodge of distinction. Moved by a scrumptious tropical breeze, each epic day in the saddle closes out with a cold one. Or perhaps a Jimmy Buffett signature tropical cocktail, topped with a paper parasol to celebrate the sun-kissed Treasure Coast.

Day 1:  Meet-up in Orlando. Then, two-hour shuttle to Vero Beach (pop. 16,919), nicknamed Hibiscus City; Atlantic-facing beach community set on a barrier island. The first ride of our tour sweeps north, between the coast and I-95. On that note: It’s said that Florida is the only state in the US where the further north you go, the further south you get. All subtext aside, that direction delivers rich visual history, optimum cycling routes and abundant wildlife. Egressing from Vero Beach, our route hugs the Atlantic, and more figuratively, what’s called the Treasure Coast. (An entire Spanish fleet was lost here in 1715, swept to the bottom by a hurricane. Estimates place two trillion dollars worth of booty and sunken riches within 60-miles of Florida’s coast.) Our routing, however, locks onto a natural bounty. One that resolves into a warm, tropical embrace, and a trifecta of wilderness: the St. Sebastian River State Park; the adjacent 21,000-acre Fort Drum Marsh and 6500-acre Blue Cypress conservation areas. The latter set-aside wends us past 30-46 ft. tall Cypress trees, most 6-9 at their base. Though some reach in excess of 36-ft diameter. On this stage, we’ll also gain an up-close sense of the region’s unique geology. To wit, as Lake Okeechobee retreated, it left great spans of fossilized mollusk that clung to limestone. These ancient clamshells bore and nurtured gems (called calcites). With a triumphal surge across a handsome cyclist-pedestrian dedicated bridge, we drop into Captain Hiram’s Sebastian Inn, our layover. Named for American GI who perished at Normandy, Captain Hiram’s is nothing less than Jimmy Buffett’s vision of paradise, or island escapism: an inviting resort of old Florida charm, albeit with a subtle Bahamian vibe. Set alongside Sebastian Inlet, which opens onto the Intracoastal Waterway, the gentle waters here are frequented by manatees, Bottlenose dolphins, Pelicans if not all manner of colorful waterfowl.  TOTAL MILEAGE:  34-41-miles TOTAL ASCENT:  301-398ft.

Day 2:  We hail today’s loop as the Lake Okeechobee out ‘n back. Known as Florida’s inland sea, Okeechobee answers to Florida’s largest freshwater lake, as well as America’s ninth largest. Hugging the 730-sq mile lake’s northern tier, our tour sweeps south, via Taylor Creek. Our enjoyably up-tempo circumnavigation lends great optics onto this tremendous natural resource, divided amongst no less than five Florida counties. Holding one trillion gallons of water—despite being only 9-ft deep—Okeechobee forms the headwaters of the Everglades. At the southern end we cycle past three different islands. Originally settled by pioneer stock, the trio of islands was abandoned in the 1960s. Closing out a brisk ride, we shuttle to Clewston. Tonight’s layover unfolds at the historic Clewston Inn.  TOTAL MILEAGE: 23-72 -miles  TOTAL ASCENT: 180-585 -ft

Day 3 : Day 3’s ride follows the Ormond Loop, seguing into the 3230-acre Bulow State Park. A northerly neighbor of Daytona Beach, the Ormond area is decidedly more tranquil—think bowling, pickleball and pools—if not nature and cyclist friendly than Daytona. Pointing our front wheels onto a network of scenic state and county back roads, this stage merges onto vestiges of the Old Dixie Highway. Our routing transits Pine forests, lakes turned red by tannic acids and swamplands patrolled by alligators. Constructed in 1915, then expanded in 1925, the Old Dixie passes over moveable bridges—to accommodate boat traffic—not to mention before more deeply rooted mainstays. Namely, the largest stand of iconic Southern live oak trees. One such beauty, known as the Fairchild oak, is four centuries old, and the largest of its kind. Today’s ride also visits the ruins of an ante-bellum plantation remarkable as much for its remoteness as its building materials. Constructed of coquina, great horizontal slags of sediments embedded with trilobites, mollusk and other invertebrates, the plantation and its adjacent sugar mill offer a fascinating glimpse onto what was the region’s first enterprise/economic lynchpin. Overhead we’ll likely glimpse Bald eagle and Swallow-tailed kites, a small black and white raptor. Our ride closes out at the Minneola Inn, alongside Ormond Lake. A turn-of-the-century property, the Inn gracefully projects old Florida aesthetics, but nuanced with a decidedly Key West vibe. More so, there might not be a better spot to view the sunset, or decompress post-ride than at the Inn’s waterfront Tiki Bar.  TOTAL MILEAGE:  23-miles TOTAL ASCENT:  266-ft.

Day 4 : The day’s ride loops over what’s known as the Alps of Florida. (Don’t snicker, Westerners.) Climbing a total of 1445-ft, our route peaks out at 309-ft ASL. Sweeping through farmlands, vineyards and orchards from Clermont, west of Lake Apopka, today’s ride is punctuated by the Sunshine’s State’s steepest rollers, terrain completely atypical of the Florida peninsula. At Clermont (pop. 30,200), about 22-miles west of Orlando, we gain unprecedented view finding via the Florida Citrus Tower. Built in 1956, the 226-ft tower lends a 360-degree view of the surrounding orange groves. Our ride closes out at the Mt. Dora Inn, yet another signature lodge.  TOTAL MILEAGE:  33-miles TOTAL ASCENT:  1445-ft.

Day 5 : The day’s ride follows a rails-to-trails course, the Withlacoochee: a linear state park shaped around a dedicated bike path, the state’s longest paved trail spanning 46-miles altogether. Smartly built atop the erstwhile Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, this ride sweeps between a pair of chained lakes. Then over former railway trestles, by virtue of small bridges engineered for cyclists and pedestrians. All throughout, the framing along the Withlacoochee Trail is quietly stunning if not gleefully rich in feathers and fur. To either side of trail roam Wild turkey, White-tailed deer and wild hogs; these five to six foot long interlopers reach 150-lbs and up. Speaking of up, overhead we’ll very likely encounter herons, Sandhill cranes, wood storks, limpkins (a long legged shorebird) as well as a great many songbirds. Transiting successive state forests, we enter Richloam: a 58,000-acre preserve of pine savannah mixed with forested wetlands. Rolling in and out of piney forest, we stop to savor small, rural Florida townships. They include the stately and picturesque Floral City (pop. 5216), named for its abundant wildflowers. Should the impulse set in, those gardeners amongst us are free to yell “ floribunga ”! here. The ride partly follows the 70-mile Crooked River, sweeping through the Citrus Wildlife Management area, the Flying Eagle and Jumper Creek preserves, respectively, before our peloton curls off for Inverness, where we overnight.  TOTAL MILEAGE:  23-62-miles TOTAL ASCENT:  420-1767 ft.

Day 6:  Our wrap-up day ride follows the Fleet Trail. From quirky Mascotte (pop. 5538), named for a small tobacco hauler that sailed between here and Cuba during the Spanish-American War, we sweep across the east edge of the aforementioned Richloam Wildlife preserve; then merge into the adjacent 110,000-acre Green Swamp preserve. Paralleling I-75, west of Orlando, we reach the headwaters of no less than four rivers: the Peace, Withlacachoolee, Ocklawaha, and Hillsborough. Ultimately, our route bisects a 560,000-acre plateau of wetlands, lowlands and sandy ridges; a critical habitat and drinking water source. Closing out here we shuttle back to Orlando.  TOTAL MILEAGE: 19 -miles  TOTAL ASCENT:  378-ft.

If you are bringing your bike with you, check with your airline’s baggage policy in advance and be sure to pack your bike accordingly. Our Commitment to the Environment

Our environmental commitment is second to none. We run our tours the same way we run our company, with an eye on the triple bottom line: People, Profit & Planet. At Escape Adventures, we elected to pursue a more comprehensive approach to actually reduce our carbon footprint, rather than just offset it. We overhauled our entire operation — from our vehicles, to our buildings, to our procedures — to become an outdoor industry leader in the charge to help our people and our planet.

Exceptional Service and Exceptional Guides

Leading tours naturally followed from our passion of exploring our favorite places with our friends. Our support staff includes our reservation team who is there to answer your questions about the tours, our service team who prepares your bike and gear for the tour, and our guide team – the ones who take you into the great outdoors. The highest level of responsibility, good nature, integrity, and dedication are standard traits of all those who work at Escape Adventures. We our proud of it and we think you should know it.

The Best Support Vehicles

Having custom-made vehicles allows us to take you to places few other outfitters can, or will go. Every Escape Adventures tour is accompanied by at least one support vehicle, trailer, and in some cases a second and third transfer van. After purchase, we custom engineer our trucks, vans, and trailers by our on-staff mechanic to meet the unique needs of different tours. For example, certain vehicles are specifically designed for the Canyonlands region of Utah, while others are designed for The Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. Each of our Trip Leaders is required to be trained in safe vehicle operation, 4X4 driving, and basic maintenance. Our experienced Trip Leaders make it look easy, transporting you and up to 12 guests, along with their bikes, fresh food, gear and plenty of drinking water to any location.

The Best Bicycles and Gear

Make your trip as comfortable as possible on the body, as simple as possible for traveling, and hassle-free on tour. By choosing to rent a bike from us, we will fit you with the newest, highest quality gear in the industry. Escape Adventures provides only high-end bicycles from Specialized. We replace our rental fleet each season to ensure all our rentals meet our high standards. All of our bikes are equipped carbon fiber frames and disc brakes designed for a smooth, comfortable ride. For those who are touring with a companion who may not be as fit or need a little help up the hills, we now have ebikes (electric pedal assist) available on select tours.

The Best Food

Our food isn’t just good, it’s good for you.

Food represents a big part of the Escape Adventures experience. On our inn tours most dinners and breakfasts unfold at local favorite restaurants. We also have energy snacks aboard our support vehicles. Don’t be surprised if your guides purchase fresh fruits and healthy snacks throughout the day while you’re enjoying a ride. They may just show up on the trail with a local treat!  An increasing number of our guests are vegans or vegetarians, whom we not only accommodate but also pleasantly surprise. Should you possess special diet requirements and/or limitations, just let us know at sign-up. We’ll work with you to meet those critical needs.

Bubba's PAMPERED Pedalers

Coast 2 Coast Florida

Coast 2 coast.

coast bicycle tours

Bubba’s PAMPERED Pedalers is offering a five-day ride across the central vein of Florida from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean in early April.  This five-day, four-night, fully supported bicycle vacation will start in the harbor town of Dunedin, Florida and end on the Florida Space Coast in Titusville.  At the end of your ride on Friday afternoon, you and your bicycle will be transported back to the starting point. This marks the second inaugural offering of this ride, following the resounding acclaim received during its first year. April weather in Florida is perfect for outdoor activities! You will cycle mostly paved off-road trails for the week.

C2C Florida –Here’s what to expect…

It’s a bit of a challenge to SAG on this ride because the trails are secluded and dedicated solely to cycling. You won’t hear much traffic during this five-day bike vacation.

We’ll be offering SAGs twice daily, located strategically to keep you nourished and hydrated throughout the day. Our staff and bicycle mechanic will always be on the route throughout the day. The group will dine out for three dinners and breakfasts will be taken in the host hotels. We will be staying in three different hotels as we make our way across Florida, highlighted by the classic Edgewater Hotel in Winter Garden. Mid week we will offer a rest day where you can elect to chill or do even more cycling.  Leave the hassle of moving your bags to us, the BPP Wolfpack will handle your logistical PAMPERing. As we always say, take your time and savor the ride.

The ride features paved paths for the entire duration and is suitable for bicycles of any type. Last year, most folks had a variety of EBikes, road bikes, and upright hybrids.  As with all Bubba’s PAMPERED Pedalers’ bicycle vacations, we welcome EBikes.

Note: Please be advised that all BPP bicycle vacations include daily options for reduced mileage. Prior to each days ride, typically the evening before, you will be notified about choices for the day (two shortened variants) and necessary arrangements will be made to accommodate your preferences.

Coast to Coast across America by Bicycle

America! They call you "the beautiful", "land of the free", "the greatest country on earth" and even "God's own country". And the best thing about it: It's all true!

Isn't it time to see the real thing? And there is no better way to do so than by bicycle.

Here it is, the whole country, long and wide, sea to shining sea.

Physische Karte.jpeg

Here you see it all, the great harbors of the east, that have seen millions of immigrants, full of hope, the cities of California, where young folks invent a new future every single day, the Rocky Mountains with their national parks and the great plains, that feed the world.

Whoever looks at this map, starts to dream of the journey of a lifetime.

About this website

Coast to coast by bike, traveling all the way across the continental U.S.A., from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean by bicycle, that's what this is all about.

Isn't that extremely strenuous? Oh, yes, it is. There will be days when you begin counting down the miles right after breakfast.

I don't have much time. Will it take long? Yes, it will. The country is not only great, but big, too. Going all the way will take weeks and weeks of bicycling day after day.

Is there anything worthwhile seeing along the way? Yes, Americans. You will meet the most friendly and helpful people anyone could wish for. And the famous national parks, big cities, technical and historical monuments.

I own a car. Why should I use a bicycle instead to cross this vast country? Just to show, that you can do it. Because it is a challenge for mind and body. Because it is an experience and an adventure! Because it is slow.

Can I make it? Yes. Everybody able to cycle some miles can do it. You can do your training right on the job. Much of the route is more or less level and does not require excessive sportiness, but persistence and perseverance. And when you reach the Rocky Mountains, you will be so well-trained, that you will overcome this little obstacle without difficulty.

What else do I need? Good planning. This is, what this website is for. What are possible routes from coast to coast? How many miles? Which time of year is best? Or will I end up in ice or snow or hellish heat? Will I have a nice tailwind? That are the questions this website wants to answer by text and maps.

I'm German. Does my English sound funny or strange? Is the website helpful? Have you found any errors? Is anything important missing? Then drop me a note in the comments section below. I will take care of it (if I feel like doing so).

Do you like my maps? Unless otherwise stated, you can use and share any text, maps and images on this site, but only according to the rules of the CC BY-NC-SA.

Should you see any advertising here, it will be used to finance my next trip ...

Pedal alongside the crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic Sea, flanked by vineyards, olive groves, limestone cliffs, and picturesque historic towns. Contemplate life as it was over a millennium ago at one of the best-preserved Roman monuments in the world in Split. Visit Dubrovnik, the gem of the Adriatic, with the longest and best-preserved city walls anywhere on the continent.

Croatia has been a favorite tourist destination since the 19 th century and its popularity is only increasing in the modern age. In fact, hardly a day goes by without another travel magazine rating it among the top luxury tourist destinations in the world. Come see why! The reasons are simple. Croatia has fabulous regional food and wine, top-notch accommodations, beautiful coastlines, charming countryside, and well-preserved ancient history. A guided cycling tour with a local (English speaking) guide is the best way to appreciate southern Croatia. Learn how the Croatian lifestyle fits into the Mediterranean culture in the modern day and witness some of the most fascinating history and scenery in the world.

Meet at our 4-star hotel in the historic Split and enjoy a welcome dinner at a local restaurant.

Marvie Hotel, Jupiter Heritage Hotel, or Marmont Hotel

Following your arrival in Croatia, you have the day to explore the beautiful town of Split and the Roman ruins on your own. Most visitors consider these sights a “must see” while they are in the area!

Our group will meet in our hotel at 5 pm and set up our bikes and equipment, followed by a welcome dinner at a local restaurant. Enjoy the next two nights in Split at a lovely 4-star hotel in the heart of this historic city.

Ferry to island of Brač, famous for its limestone, pedal to the Olive Oil Museum for a tasting.

– Breakfast – Lunch

From the Diocletian town of Split, we will board a morning ferry to the island of Brač for the day. Stone from Brač represents the soul of the island. It has been used in the construction of some of the most famous buildings in the world: the UNESCO-protected Diocletian Palace in Split, the White House in Washington D.C., and the Pope’s altar in the Vatican – to name a few. Since the islands along the Dalmatian Coast are also famous for their olive oil, we will stop for a tasting and an overview of its history and methods of production at the Olive Oil Museum. Our Brač tour will finish at a local restaurant, called a konoba, with fresh and domestic food – a fitting reward after pedaling through this beautiful and hilly landscape. Dinner is on your own after we take the ferry back to Split for another night.

Cycle along the coastline on the island of Hvar.

– Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

Adriana Hotel or Riva Marina

Today we ferry from Split to the island of Hvar in the morning. While the name Hvar derives from the Greek – Pharos, the island was historically under Venetian influence. This influence is exemplified by the picturesque architecture of the town of Hvar with its spectacular coastline and climate, red tile roofs and ancient city walls. Today, take in the wondrous scent of the lavender farms as you cycle to the town of Jelsa, situated on a tranquil bay nestled between the island’s two highest peaks. We finish in the island’s namesake town, Hvar. Lodging will be at another 4-star accommodation in town with dinner at a local restaurant.

On to the island Korčula, land of oaks and pines. Sample regional cooking (peka) and wines.

Hotel Korsal or Hotel Liburna or Marko Polo Hotel

From Hvar, we will jump on a private boat to transfer to the town of Vela Luka on the island of Korčula where we will spend the next two days. During our first day on Korčula, we will cycle the island from east to the west, passing through the lush forests of holm oaks and Mediterranean pines. The island is so densely forested with that the 4th century B.C. Greeks dubbed the island “Korkyra Melaina” (dark or black Korčula). In modern times, the island is famous for its olive groves. After settling in at our 4-star hotel, we have a special dinner experience tonight. Wine is included (but that’s not what makes it special). We will be sampling peka. More of a Dalmatian cooking tradition than a recipe, peka refers to a slow-cooking method which means “cooked under the lid.” High heat and the vacuum created by the lid infuses potatoes and vegetables with flavor and renders “meat so soft you can chew it with your eyebrows”. A great variety of dishes are prepared in this delicious fashion.

Explore Korčula, a scenic town on a lovely bay. Enjoy a wine tasting on us!

– Breakfast

Today, you have a hard choice to make! You can enjoy some more riding on the island of Korčula, or you can spend the day sea kayaking, sailing, or exploring more of Korčula’s (the town’s) history and attractions.  Famous as the birthplace of renowned traveler Marco Polo, the town boasts an exhibition about the famous explorer in the center of town. Korčula is also well known for the mock battle dance (Moreška), performed only by males from Korčula town families, with each soldier holding two swords. It is traditionally performed on July 29 (St. Theodore’s Day) and weekly during the summer season. Dinner is on your own tonight. Layover day excursions are not included in the tour price, but the wine tasting is on us!

Pedal from the coastline through vineyards to the world-renowned city of Dubrovnik.

Hotel Lapad or Hotel Lero

After breakfast, we will take a short ferry to the town of Orebić on the Pelješac Peninsula. It’s a spectacular ride to an even more spectacular destination. Cycle the coast past oyster farms and stop for a fresh sample if you like! Heading inland along the peninsula, vineyards dominate the landscape. Compare the Croatian varietals you have tried with Dalmatian favorites like Pošip or Dingač. In Dubrovnik, before heading out on the town for our farewell dinner, enjoy a tour of the city, featuring some of the longest, best-preserved city walls in Europe. See why the popular TV series, Game of Thrones, chose this location for filming its capital city – “King’s Landing”. Enjoy fabulous accommodations at at either the Hotel Lapad or the Hotel Lero in Dubrovnik.

A farewell breakfast concludes our adventure.

After breakfast at our hotel (included), we make our final farewells before heading our separate ways. Shuttles to the airport or other destinations are not included.

Due to hurricane damage on the gulf coast areas of Sanibel and Fort Myers, we have decided to alter our routes for the 2024 Everglades | Key West Bike Tour. This will allow everyone a year or two to rebuild, recover and come back better than ever.

Our new itinerary will still include white sandy beaches, turquoise waters and warm ocean tailwinds, making The Florida Keys and Everglades National Park the ideal place to kick back and enjoy a laid-back winter bike tour getaway. Join us this winter for a luxury-style tour filled with multi-sport activities. Jumpstart your spring training, or simply enjoy a warm week from the grasps of winter.

This tour starts with a short 15-mile shuttle from Miami to Shark Valley in the Everglades. Cycling through the Everglades allows for a slower paced tour than your typical airboat excursion because we opt for a car-free paved trail. We ride through freshwater ecosystems within Everglades National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We have plenty of time and opportunity to take in the views of the ever-changing sawgrass prairie, abundant wading birds and an occasional alligator.

South Florida and The Keys weather is always the best at this time of year. The water temperatures are in the low 70s and the air temperature in the upper 70s. This makes for ideal cycling temperatures. When you want a break from cycling (or perhaps you are a non-cyclist), enjoy some time poolside or on the beach at one of our lodging destinations. Grab a cocktail at the tiki bar, schedule a spa treatment or take a visit to the Turtle Hospital or the Dolphin Research Center. If you need a break from the bike saddle, get your feet wet in the water at some of America’s top beaches or snorkel effortlessly on the water’s surface near the 3rd largest reef in the world.

The majority of our tour follows a federally recognized National Scenic Highway. The Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail is a multi-use path which closely parallels US Highway 1 for 106 miles. The town of Key West boasts of bike paths, bike routes and quirky hotels and eateries. There is not a shortage of additional entertaining activities. Watch the sunset over Mallory Square, live entertainment and shows on Duval Street or visit the many museums and galleries.

  • At the conclusion of the tour, we can drop you at the Key West Airport for departure, offer you a 3.5 hour shuttle back to your car in Miami or arrange for the fast ferry to take you from Key West to Fort Meyers, where you can grab an Uber or shuttle to an airport hotel for a flight out the next morning. If you are not ready to go back to the cold winter, stay a few extra days on Key West.

Tour Highlights

  • Cycle through Everglades National Park  on a 15-mile paved biking path (no cars allowed), enjoying the quiet beauty of the sawgrass prairies of this UNESCO World Heritage Area.
  • Stay at three gorgeous waterfront resorts  featuring heated outdoor pools & jacuzzis, spa treatments, tiki bars, hammocks, beach cafés and water-sports.

  • Enjoy perfect cycling weather  (January has temps in the high 70s).
  • Assembly:  Airline service to Miami International FL.
  • Depart from Key West Airport, or van service back to Miami is available. You will arrive back to your car by 3 PM on the final day.

  • Uber if you are on your own or van shuttle services with group from here to the layover hotel.
  • Some guests decide to stay over additional days in Key West. Call the office, we can help with that.

Do-it-Yourself Bike Tours

These are do-it-yourself rides that for the adventurous who have their own bike.  However, we recommend that you employ guides from some of our Partners who also rent bikes.

Bike Only Tours

Guerneville to Armstrong Woods:

This is a short ride, liesurely flat ride on a well traveled, but relatively safe, road. The prize at the end is the Armstrong Redwood Preserve with 1000 year old trees.  Although your can ride your bike in the Preserve you will see more amazing sights if you park your bike at the parking lot and spend a couple of hours walking the trails in the Preserve.

From the Guerneville Plaza ride Armstrong  Wood Road north. 2.3 miles.

Monte Rio to Cazadero

We recommend that you do this trip with http://getawayadventures.com/

This ride follows some of the Sonoma Marin Adventure Trail route along the original right-of-way of the historic steam-powered narrow-gage North Pacific Coast Railroad.  Consequently the ride is flat.   14 miles one way.  About 2-3 hrs.  Medium Difficulty.

  • Start at the Monte Rio Park ‘N Ride at the corner of Main St. and Moscow Rd.
  • Ride west on Moscow Rd. to Duncans Mills. There is a road washout at mile 2.5 but you can lift your bike over the concrete bariers and stay to the left.  We recommend that you stop at the Gold Coast Coffee and Bakery for pastries and a hot drink. 3.4 mi.
  • From the parking lot at Gold Coast Coffee, Ride Moscow Rd. west to Highway 116.  290 ft.
  • Turn right on Highway 116 and ride to to Austin Creek Road. 1.3 mi.
  • Ride Austin Creek Road North to Cazadero Highway. 3.6 mi.
  • Turn right on Cazadero Highway and ride north to our Partner, Raymond’s Bakery.  If you arrive on Friday evening in the summer months they have music, pizza and lodging. ‭(707) 632-5335.  2.0mi.

  • Retrace your route to return to Monte Rio.

Occidental to the Coast

This is a route with incredible scenery:  redwood forest, bucolic farms, and spacious views of the Pacific Ocean and the quaint West County village of Occidental.  There is a motel, an inn and two guesthouses near Occidental. 26 miles.   About 5-6 hours.   Very Challenging

  • Start from the parking lot in front of the Union Hotel Restaurant.  Take a moment to read the history of Occidental on the kiosk next to Bohemian Highway
  • Walk your bike to the intersection of Bohemian Highway and Coleman Valley Rd.  About 300 ft. Ride west on Coleman Valley Rd. to Joy Rd. There are some steep grades on this segment but the toil is worth it.  1.8 Miles.
  • Turn right at the intersection and continue on Coleman Valley Rd. to State Highway 1 on the beautiful Sonoma Coast. You will ride by an historic one-room school house and not far from an old growth forest (800+yr. old trees).   The views are breathtaking.  Take it easy on the downhill stretch just before reaching the coast.  8.3 mi.
  • We do not recommend riding Highway 1 to the small fishing village of Bodega. High traffic with not bike lane.  But if you can’t resist it is 2.8 miles south.

Santa Rosa to Forestville

This ride follows the original route of the Petaluma & Santa Rosa Railroad from Railroad Square in Santa Rosa all the way to Forestville on the Russian River via the Laguna de Santa Rosa and Sebastopol.  Along the way you can visit whimsical and humorous metal sculptures made from recycled materials, wineries and a goat farm.  West County & Joe Rodota Trails Distance: 11.5 miles (about 1-2 hours) Sonoma County Bike Trails Rating: Easy Ride Route: From Railroad Square in Santa Rosa walk across Third street and parallel to the tracks (on the west side of the fence along the SMART train tracks to the Joe Rodota  Trail.  Follow the trail all the way to Sebastopol.

We suggest that you cross Petaluma Ave. at the crosswalk at the end of the Joe Rodota Trail, walk across the parking lot to the history museum on Main Street.  Walk your bike north on Main Street to McKinley Street. There are a number of good restaurants on Main Street and McKinley if you need to stop for lunch.   Walk to the end of McKinley then turn left on Morris Street.  The West County Trail starts at the the bend of Morris between the Analy High School football field and Wishmann Hall.

Follow the signs on the West County Trail all the way to Forestville.  The Joe Rodota Trail and most of the West County Trail are on the historic route of the Petaluma Santa Rosa Railway. map

Occidental to the Grove of the Old Trees, Pomo Canyon Camp and the Russian River

This ride takes you from a ridge top ancient redwood grove through the redwood forest down through the Willow Creek unit of the Sonoma Coast State Park.  At the end near the Russian River is a campground and the trailhead for a wonderful hike to the Pacific Ocean at shell beach. Distance: 27 miles.                                                                                                     Time: About 4-5 hours. Rating: Challenging (Paved and Dirt Trails) Route: Start your ride in Occidental. Ride  Coleman Valley Rd. west to Joy Rd. then Right on Fitzpatrick Lane to the Grove of the Old Trees.  Take time to walk through the Grove of the Old Trees before continuing your ride.  Ride Fitzpatrick Lane to Joy Road.  Continue straight on Coleman Valley Road to Willow Creek Road. Left on Willow Creek Road which will be partly a dirt road.  There is a gate  to the entrance of Pomo Canyoun Camp and a trailhead for a spetacular hike to Shell Beach.  Continue on Willow Creek road then turn right onto Coast Highway, Right onto Highway 116, right on Moscow Road crossing  the Russian River just beyond  Duncan Mills, Left on Moscow Road which is part of the Heritage Trail, Right onto Bohemian Highway at Monte Rio and back to Occidental.

Transit Plus Bike Tours

A fun way to extend your range of bike tours without the hassle and expense of driving and parking is to take advantage of regional transit such as the Golden Gate Ferry and the Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) Train.  Both the Ferry and the SMART train accomodate bicycles on board.  The Ferry links to the SMART train at Larkspur.  If you live in San Francisco, the  East Bay or on the Peninsula, local transit like CalTrain and BART can connect you to the Ferry Building.  Below are some bike rides you can start from the Larkspur Ferry Terminal or one of the many SMART stations.

Railroad Square SMART Station to Forestville:

coast bicycle tours

The highway glides downhill right to sea level at the mouth of Salmon Creek. There is a small cluster of beach houses here—doing a passable imitation of a Maine seacoast village—but no public services. Climb gently up the other side of the creek’s little valley, and soon you’ll be at the left turn onto Bay Hill Road. This junction—at around mile 22—is just on the north edge of the town of Bodega Bay. There is a coffee shop right across the road from Bay Hill. If it has “Hill” in the name, you can be fairly certain it’s going to have a climb in it somewhere, and in this case, the climb begins immediately and continues—with a few flat spots mixed in—for a mile and a half, to a 750’ summit. It’s a stiff climb, but not absolutely brutal. On the way up, you can enjoy the view back out to sea, beyond Bodega Harbor and Bodega Head. By taking Bay Hill Road, the route bypasses the fishing village of Bodega Bay. If you want to avoid the climb on Bay Hill, you can stay on Hwy 1 right through the town. There is a good deal more traffic in and around the resort, which is one of the reasons we’re detouring around the town on Bay Hill. The landscape on the top of Bay Hill is empty, grass-covered hills, rolling down the mountainside until they crinkle up into deep, creek-cut canyons.

TGR-SC-BH.jpg

The descent off the backside of Bay Hill consists of several moderately steep pitches strung together with almost level bits. The last and fastest section whistles downhill through the dappled shade of a dense eucalyptus wood, and then you roll out at the bottom to another run along Hwy 1. This time you’re only on the main highway for a little less than a mile, and most of that is done at top speed on a long, smooth, straight descent to the junction with Bodega Hwy. Shortly after turning left onto Bodega Hwy, we drop into the tiny hamlet of Bodega (often confused with the larger seaside town of Bodega Bay). A note about Bodega: there are several handsome Victorian structures in town, and one of them was prominently featured in Alfred Hitchcock’s classic thriller The Birds . Hitchcock shot the movie here and in Bodega Bay, and in a bit of cinematic license, he blended the two villages into one town. All of the waterfront scenes were shot in Bodega Bay, but the schoolhouse scene, where the crows congregate on the jungle gym—was done in Bodega. Can you find the old schoolhouse? It’s next to the church. Salmon Creek Road veers off to the left in the middle of town. This is a very nice cycling road, with pavement that varies from quite good to mediocre-but-tolerable. There are numerous short, very easy rollers along the road, but no significant climbs or descents. As is the case with most dead-ends, there is no traffic. For almost its entire 4-mile length, it parallels Salmon Creek, and the road is shaded by pretty glades of laurel and willow. The road becomes a private, dirt drive at a little bridge over a creek, and it’s a tranquil spot to stop for a snack. We mention this in case you have a wish to pad the miles on this little pocket-sized ride. If you do, Salmon Creek Road is a nice way to do it. After leaving Bodega, the route heads east on the highway—a busy highway, but with big shoulders on this section—for a fraction of a mile and then turns left onto Joy Road. After a brief level prelude, this tiny lane tilts up on end in the first of two, brutal, back-to-back walls. Neither is very long, but they are steep: 350’ in half a mile for the first one. Then a brief drop into a saddle in the trees before hitting the second climb: 400’ in .7 of a mile. That’s not the end of the climbing, but the wicked grade eases off to the point where one can sit down and take a few normal breaths. Easy climbing—mixed with little rollers—continues for another mile to a summit at 1000’. After that, our dance card is filled with downhills almost to the end of the ride. We snake down off the ridge on Joy in a twist through the trees and then, after a swift, sweeping right onto Bittner Road, funnel into deep forest on a steep, fast plunge of about a mile. As we drop into the canyon, we’ll pick up a little stream by the side of the road. Those are the headwaters of Salmon Creek, and this is the third time we’ve encountered it on this ride: first as it emptied into the ocean, then along its middle reach by Salmon Creek Road, and now at the point of its birth. A little bit of easy uphill at the end of Bittner ushers us back into the center of Occidental. We are offering an alternate route for part of this loop. It is much shorter than the basic loop, but is much hillier. This is Coleman Valley Road, heading west right out of the center of Occidental. Normally, we wouldn’t suggest such of combination of short miles and hard climbs, but because the road is here and is so very nice, and because we’re discussing local options, we feel we should discuss it. Coleman Valley begins with a stout climb of about 400’ in a little over a mile. Then our riders get to rest and enjoy the view on a more-or-less level run across a wide, sweeping meadow, with a splendid view of Mount Saint Helena and the other peaks of the Mayacamas Mountains on the far, eastern horizon. There is one more little bump of an uphill to the first big summit and then the road plunges down into its namesake valley on a slithery run through the woods. Pass the one-room school house and the pretty farm next door and cruise down the length of the valley. Very abruptly, the road rounds a right-hand bend and tilts up onto the hillside, beginning a succession of short, steep pitches that will eventually climb to panoramic views over the Pacific and miles and miles of empty hills. Once up on this second 1100’ summit, this spectacular back road bends to the south and waltzes down the ridgeline in a rollicking series of small ups and downs. Coleman Valley Road winds through thick forest for most of its first half, but when it breaks out onto the ridge above the ocean, the trees fall away and the hills are mantled in only green, windblown grasses. Hence, the wide-open, uninterrupted views.

TGR-SC-CV.1.jpg

Finally, the winding road crests the last of the little uphill rollers and one is confronted with a very hairy downhill. Stop for a minute to admire the sweeping panorama along the seashore, far below. Take in the sights now, because you won’t have any attention to spare for the scenery once you launch off into this 1.5-mile, 800’ amusement park ride. It’s steep; it’s twisty; it’s bumpy. There are cattle guards to hop and potholes to dodge. There are many spots where the cliff just spills away suddenly from the edge of the narrow road. Like a large, writhing snake, this tangled descent can be a handful. But if you like technical, tricky downhills, you’ll have a ball on this one. The bottom of the descent means Hwy 1. Coleman Valley tees into the coast road about a mile north of Salmon Creek, and the rest of the loop would be the same as on the basic course.
