UAE’s highest peak can never go off our list!  Jebel Jais, known as the highest peak of the UAE is part of the Hajar mountains which were formed 70 years ago in the eastern part of Ras Al Khaimah and Oman. Mounting at 1,934 meters above sea level, this peak is known for its breathtaking views, exciting adventures, and much more. And the best thing about Jebel Jais is that the weather here is always more pleasant than sea level.

6. Wadi Ghalilah, Ras Al Khaimah

Located two hours out of Dubai, Wadi Ghalilah is known for its steeper rocks and cliffs. Why You’ll Love Winter in Dubai – 2023/24 Guide

Everyone keeps telling you to visit Dubai in the winter, but why?

How much difference will it make to your Dubai experience to visit in the cooler months of the year? Exactly how cold does it get, and can you expect sunshine or rain? Is it still beach weather in the middle of the Dubai winter season? What’s going on during winter 2023-24 to make it worth the visit?

Winter in Dubai brings with it mild temperatures, plenty of sunshine, festivals and live entertainment, with a very low chance of your winter plans being washed out by inclement weather. Let’s take a deep dive into Dubai’s desert climate and the best winter activities in Dubai and The United Arab Emirates.

When is Winter in Dubai?

Things to do in dubai in the winter, what if it rains in winter what to do in dubai when it rains, possible cons of visiting dubai in winter, what to pack for dubai in winter, more faqs about winter season in dubai.

If you’re interested in what to expect on the flip side, you can see our full guide to visiting Dubai in Summer here – along with our monthly guides to Dubai weather & events calendar .

Following the northern hemisphere seasons, winter in Dubai falls from December to March . However, unlikely much of Europe and North America don’t expect snow and freezing temperatures. Dubai likes to blissfully glide into a mild winter of blue skies, sunny days, and crisp cool evenings – but rarely what most would call COLD.

Rather than a traditional four seasons, Dubai’s seasons can best be described as simply summer and winter, with huge degrees of heat variation between the two (or hot, very hot, and OMG, I can’t believe it gets that HOT!).

Boat in Dubai Marina

The cooler, more bearable months of the year generally run from late October , where we see a significant drop in daytime highs (from the 40’s°C down to the lows 30’s°C in November), through to mid-May , where the temperatures start hitting into the 40°C/100°F + realms once more.

Dubai Winter Temperature: How Cold Does Dubai Get in Winter?

The coolest month of the year for Dubai is January , where the average temperature is 24.2°C (76°F). The average overnight low in January is 14.6°C (58°F), and the average sea temperature of Dubai in January is 23.9°C (75°F).

You can expect, on average, 8 hours of sunshine on a Dubai winter’s day.

There can, of course, be extremes in Dubai at any time of year, and winter is no exception. Daytime temperatures in January can climb over 30°C (86°F), and nighttime temperatures in the mountains and desert can get as cold as freezing – snow can occur on the UAE’s highest peak – Jebel Jais – on the coldest of days.

Dubai Air Temperature Chart

Does it Rain in Dubai in the Winter?

Rain is not a daily occurrence in Dubai; however, increasingly, rainstorms can occur – usually downpours all at once rather than days on end of rain and drizzle.

On average, you can expect five rain days per month between December and March. It is hard to predict precisely when it might rain in Dubai more than a few days out, so we wouldn’t go planning a winter holiday in Dubai around the weather, nor even pack an umbrella.

However, be aware it CAN happen and when it does…. oh boy! Flash flooding and traffic chaos can ensue. It’s best if it rains during your trip to Dubai to head somewhere safely indoors and wait it out until it passes >> see our indoor suggestions below!

Be aware that Dubai also engages in cloudseeding , which has resulted in more frequent rain showers than the UAE has historically experienced.

Fog in Dubai

By far, a bigger issue in Dubai in winter than rain is fog. For most of the winter months in Dubai, in fact, from even as early as September, you will start to experience some phenomenal morning fogs descending upon the city due to the overnight humidity.

This low-level fog normally burns off by mid-morning to leave a beautiful, crisp, and sunny day ahead. The fog can, however, cause air traffic chaos and problems on the fast-flowing roads. On rare occasions, it can be so severe as to close DXB airport.

So, on to the fun stuff and why we love winter in Dubai so much: the cooler weather means a return to our favourite parks and outdoor activities ! Winter 2023/24 really starts with the return of outdoor markets and seasonal favourites like Global Village and rolls on with Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and so much more, making the most of the great outdoors.

Expo City Dubai

Expo 2020 may now feel like a distant memory, but as promised, the grounds of the amazing site have been turned into a city of the future and are well worth checking out this winter.

Important for winter 23/24 ! The grounds at Expo City will be broken into two zones during COP28 (30 November to 12 December 2023). Only UNFCCC acredited delegates can enter the Blue Zone, whilst the Green Zone is open to the public from 3 December and will offer the general public a chance to get involved – its free but you need a Green Zone Day Pass
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Expo City Dubai (@expocitydubai)

There are still plenty of events to look forward to after COP28, including Winter City under the Al Wasl Dome – think Christmas markets, Santa’s House, Frosty’s farm House and carol services from 8 December until 7 January 2024 .

Easy to reach using the Dubai Metro , or there are local bus services now connecting Expo City Dubai to the surrounding suburbs.

You can learn more about Expo City Dubai here.

Dubai Parks & Outdoor Activities

Head to one of Dubai’s many parks and popular outdoor spaces during your winter trip to Dubai. Some of the top parks we recommend visitors to explore for experiencing different sides of Dubai include:

Mushrif Park – unlike most of the city’s parks that are beautifully manicured, Mushrif Park has a more wilderness feel of native shrubland amongst the native Ghaf trees. A popular weekend picnicking spot and home to the treetop ropes course, Aventura, it’s hard to believe such greenery exists close to the city!

Ras Al Khor Wildlife – Set along the banks of Dubai Creek and managed by Dubai Municipality, Ras Al Khor Wildlife Reserve is one of the most unique outdoor experiences in Dubai. Home to birds, most famously the flamingo, mammals, reptiles, and fish, this is one of the city’s hidden gems worthy of a half-day visit to soak in inner-city tranquillity.

Quranic Park – a new instalment of Dubai Municipality, this beautifully laid out park in the Al Khawaneej area of the city is dedicated to the Holy Quran. Covering 60 acres, the park is open to all faiths to explore, including the “Glasshouse” which displays plants mentioned in the Holy Quran and the “Cave of Miracles” which tells stories from the Holy Book.

J1 Beach (formerly La Mer) – We look forward to the return of this beachfront venue in early 2024, bringing al fresco dining, water sports and luxury beach clubs.

View from a park in Dubai back to the highrises of JBR

Dubai Safari Park – Found in the Al Warqa 5 area of the city. The park plays host to over 3000 animals, with educational, conservation, and protection at the core of their mission.

The Walk & The Beach JBR – this iconic beachfront area of Dubai has something for everyone. City meets beach on the bustling waterfront walk. Enjoy cosmopolitan restaurants to ice cream stands and kids splash parks, camel rides along the beach, and a huge range of water sports are on offer.

Al Seef – where old meets new along the western bank of the Dubai Creek. Traditional architecture seamlessly blends the city’s oldest neighbourhood into this modern waterfront destination. Catch your boat tours from here or enjoy a bite overlooking the water and stroll the touristy shops.

You can find our complete guide to Dubai’s best parks and outdoor spaces here as well as a guide to our favourite public beaches in Dubai .

Desert safaris, dune sports and camping in Dubai in winter

Winter is an ideal time to explore Dubai’s desert. On an evening, overnight safari, or early morning hot air balloon ride , you will definitely want to pack a warm jumper/sweater and take long trousers with you, along with closed-toe shoes. You may even want a beanie and scarf if you’re particularly susceptible to the cold, but it’s not super cold. Organised desert camps will provide you with the necessary blankets.

With the cooler day temperatures too, winter is the best time for a daytime Dubai desert safari . Operates have re-opened post-Covid-19 with a strict range of safety measures in place to make them a fun and enjoyable experience for all.

A fun desert activity to enjoy in the winter for your adrenaline junkies is a dune buggy tour – check out exactly how you can book your dune buggy tour in Dubai over here .

If you’d prefer something more sedate and eco-friendly, we strongly suggest you try one of the tours in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve , where the focus is moe on the native flora and fauna and appreciating the serenity of the desert.

You can see our complete guide to overnight camping and glamping in Dubai here.

Al Fresco Dining in Dubai

Dubai enjoys a spectacular array of outdoor dining venues, and full advantage is taken of this in the winter months to enjoy the city’s spectacular skyline.

Whether it’s city vistas and a thriving party scene you are after with views of the Burj Khalifa or romantic and uninterrupted views of the Arabian Gulf, Dubai has a rooftop bar to suit!

You can find our latest guide to Dubai’s best rooftop bars here.

Lady with drink at Dubai Rooftop bar

We also love an outdoor brunch in the cooler winter months; you can find a selection of weekend favourites here , or try a traditional Sunday roast at these incredible venues for the perfect get-together with family and friends.

Explore the Old City and Souks of Dubai

The cooler months of winter make it ideal for longer strolls outside. You could spend a full day exploring the museums around Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood , then take a traditional abra over to the Deira side of Dubai Creek to experience the many souks of Dubai, most popular the Gold & Spice Souks , and pick up some Dubai souvenirs !

The newly re-opened Shindagah Historic District would make a great outing this winter to rediscover a historic part of the city brought back to its former glory.

You can see a complete guide to Dubai’s Museums and cultural attractions here.

Hit the beach

Whilst many hotels have their own private beaches, there are a number of public beaches and beach clubs around the city offering a variety of different experiences. From sophisticated beach hang-outs to chilled-out family spots like Kite Beach,; Dubai really does have it all when it comes to beach experiences.

Most beach clubs close during the hottest months, and whilst December and January may not feel like beach weather for many residents, temperatures are still considered ‘warm’ by many visitors. If you want to seek out some winter sun, this is our current choice of the best beach clubs in Dubai (there are always new choices being added!)

You can find out more about Dubai’s best public beaches here , including advice on what to wear and which beaches are free vs paid

Visit the Theme Parks

Winter is the perfect time for theme park fans to visit Dubai with pleasant weather.

  • Dubai Parks and Resorts , with the combined theme parks of Legoland and Motiongate, makes for an excellent winter choice.
  • IMG Worlds of Adventure makes an excellent choice for inclement weather as it’s entirely indoors.
  • Heading down the road to Yas Island , Abu Dhabi, there are now 4 mega-theme parks to enjoy – Ferrari World , Yas Waterworld , Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi and the newly opened SeaWorld Yas Island .

Day Trip to other Emirates

The cooler days of winter make it a great time to explore the other emirates of the UAE (did you know Dubai is one of 7 Emirates of the UAE ? Here are our top Dubai day trip suggestions:

  • A trip to the Capital Abu Dhabi , is a must. Marvel at the stunning grandeur of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque , tour the Presidential Place Qasr Al Watan or explore the history of humanity at The Louvre Abu Dhabi – learn more about the Culture Express bus running this winter.
  • Adrenaline junkies, head to Ras Al Khaimah ! Home to the UAE’s tallest peak Jebel Jais, and the UAE adventure capital, this is where to head for scenic drives, mountain hiking and biking, wadi tours, camping and any extreme outdoor activity you can think of!
  • The perfect mix of outdoor adventures and history, head to the far east coast of the country and explore the emirate of Fujairah. From snorkelling opportunities at Snoopy Beach to dhow cruises at Dibba , this is our favourite day trip from Dubai in winter for a taste of the “other side” of the UAE, away from the modern high rises.
Read this guide if you’ll be renting a car and driving in Dubai to see if its the right fit for you or an organised tour may be better.

Dubai Water Parks and Water Sports in Winter

So, just how cold does the seawater get in winter? If you want to dip in the Arabian Gulf waters in winter, it can drop as low as 22°C (73°F) in the middle of winter.

Our super-sensitive desert kids would squeal that this is far too cold, but visitors from the depth of European winter will no doubt find it positively balmy!

  • Water Parks in Dubai remain open almost throughout the year, but you may find they close for a fortnight at some point in the winter (generally outside of school holiday times). It’s worth checking any possible closure times before you travel if this is an important part of your Dubai travel plans. Aquaventure at Atlantis remains the largest in the Middle East, but also the most crowded and can suffer from long queues. Also consider Wild Wadi Waterpark or with littles, Legoland Waterpark .
  • Resort swimming pools , on the other hand, are far more likely to be temperature controlled, so you will find them wonderfully heated in the winter (in fact, pools will start being heated to maintain a steady 28 ° C-30 ° C water temperature from about October!). Not all hotel pools are created the same in this regard! It pays to check the fine print if you’re booking a Dubai hotel in winter.
  • If in doubt, why not book a hotel in Dubai with an indoor pool ? There are plenty of places offering indoor pools for year-round relaxation at ideal temperatures, from lap pools to luxury indoor spas.

Dubai Cruises and Boat Rides

You will undoubtedly be able to enjoy getting out on the water around Duba i in plenty of other ways.

  • Winter is a good time to take a tour out of Dubai Marina , or a traditional abra across Dubai Creek is popular, or extend your evening with a more formal dinner dhow cruise .
  • There are many yachts, from Dubai Marina , in particular, where you can privately charter a yacht for your party, be it a daytime sightseeing cruise or a fun evening party out on the water.

Remember, it can get chilly in the evenings, so wear appropriate warmer clothing if you’ll be hitting the water at night.

Dubai’s Seasonal Winter Events

Many events and Dubai winter attractions will only open over the cooler months of the year, though these “seasons” are gradually creeping longer each year!

Here’s just a selection of our favourites for visitors to enjoy a different side of Dubai:

Global Village

The crowds and colours of Dubai’s Global Village need to be seen to be believed. Like a giant world’s fair representing over 70 countries through food, dance, and live performances.

  • You can enjoy super cheap entry to this outdoor extravaganza from 18 October 2023 through until 28 April 2024 . Learn more here .

Dubai Garden Glow

A spectacular nighttime light display in Zabeel Park, combined with a visit to the Dinosaur Park and even an Ice Sculpture Park all in one venue for a magical evening.

  • The usual running dates are from October until early May . Learn More here

Dubai Miracle Garden

The largest flower garden in the world by total blooms sits right here in Dubai! Marvel at the floral creations from the iconic A380 permanent feature to the swinging gardens, the floral clock, incredible topiary collections, and an annual changing lineup to impress!

  • This year’s season will run from 1 October 2023 to early May 2024 . Learn more here.

Winter Wonderland Dubai

Although Christmas is not a marked religious holiday in the United Arab Emirates, there’s no denying it’s celebrated in a big way! It may still be warm outside, but magical winter wonderlands with snow machines, Christmas Trees and market stalls to Santa himself will appear across the city in December.

All the large shopping malls will be in on the action, along with Souk Madinat, J1, and Ski Dubai – see our complete Christmas in Dubai guide here

Ripe Market

Only closing now for the hottest few months of the year, the Ripe Farmers Market has a few roving locations across the city during the summer months. In winter, however, you can find it at Academy Park in the Umm Suqeim area of the city every Saturday and Sunday. The sprawling market is a great place to pick up fresh organic fruits and vegetables and also meet local artisans selling their hand-crafted products.

  • This year’s dates are 14 October 2023 to early May 202 4

On rare days, it does rain in Dubai, but don’t worry about it ruining your travel plans – Dubai is a city also built to be enjoyed indoors! Here are just a few suggestions to fill a rainy day in Dubai (with & without kids):

  • Dubai Frame – rain or not, you can still enjoy a bird’s eye view beneath the towering Dubai Frame – observe the Dubai Creek and Old Dubai from one side and the modern skyscrapers of Dubai to the west. See our review of the Dubai Frame here .
  • Dubai Mall – always a fail-safe; whatever the weather, there’s so much to see and do in and around Dubai Mall. Take a trip up the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa , or take a tour of the incredible Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo. (Just be warned, peak times/dates for Burj Khalifa will book up FAST!)
  • Little ones will love Kidzania Dubai, or Play DXB (VR Park) for your bigger kids and the giant cinema complex – even try your hand at ice skating on the Olympic-sized rink! See our full review of the Dubai Mall activities here .
  • The Green Planet Dubai – Offers an incredible indoor rainforest experience in the heart of the city. Snake your way around the giant artificial tree inside a giant biodome adjacent to the City Walk entertainment precinct. NEW for Winter 2023 is the Nature Park – a large edutainment area featuring a treehouse with viewing platforms, adventure trails and slides, plus realistic animatronics of all manner of creepy crawlies (the outdoor exhibit is best for dry weather!)!
  • The Museum of the Future is a fascinating journey to the future of space, health and innovation (though do note that tickets need to be booked many weeks in advance; you can’t pop in here as a last-minute plan!) History buffs, though, will find Etihad Museum an excellent Dubai rainy-day choice without the queues and crowds.
  • Ski Dubai – this huge indoor ski centre in the Mall of the Emirates never fails to impress visitors; its the perfect spot to practice your ski skills in Dubai before experiencing the “real thing.”. Their festival experience in December is also one of the best in the city -though does book out early.
You can see our complete guide to Dubai’s best indoor activities here.

Now, it’s undoubtedly true the best time to visit Dubai is in the winter, but are there any drawbacks to a winter trip to Dubai? No deal breakers, but it’s worth considering:

  • It gets really busy : crowds have unfortunately become a huge thing to deal with when visiting Dubai in the winter and during peak season. We’d highly suggest if you are planning a visit to Dubai in the winter, be aware of the busiest periods over school holidays (generally the last three weeks of December). If you have flexibility, come on a weekday and outside the major school breaks to avoid lines at popular attractions.
  • It’ll cost you more : Being high season (particularly December through early January), you’ll find hotels are charging premium prices, and the best places will book up fast, there’s very little chance of finding a great deal over the cooler winter season in Dubai.
  • It could rain : Could is the key here- we’ve had winters without a drop of rain, then other years several days of deluge and localised flooding – its absolutely not a deal breaker; you are more likely to get a string of days with blue clear skies, but do have a contingency plan in mind, rain is usually forecast at least a week out.

We are normally full of positivity at visiting Dubai any time of year, but see here our LEAST favourite time to visit Dubai .

With the mild winter temperatures we’ve described, you’re probably wondering what to pack for Dubai in winter. We have a complete and detailed Dubai packing list for you here . The only real changes we’d make for visiting Dubai in winter vs summer

  • Throw in an extra pair of jeans/long trousers for the evenings
  • A pullover/sweater or light jacket may be needed in the evenings to deal with any cool breeze (or fierce indoor air conditioning!)

Unless rainy days are forecast for certain, we wouldn’t bother packing the umbrella for ‘just in case’. But DO still pack your sun hat, sunscreen and sunglasses no matter what time of year you visit Dubai.

So, is it Worth Visiting Dubai in the Winter?

Absolutely! We can’t promise clear blue skies in Dubai every single day, but it’s pretty darn close to perfection for your mid-winter vacation!

You can check out exactly what to expect each month throughout winter here:

Dubai has a distinctly cooler winter season, although the city does not experience a traditional 4-seasons. The year is better divided into summer and winter, with the cooler winter weather starting in November and lasting through until April. Daytime highs rarely drop below 20°C in this winter season, but nights can be cool, particularly in the desert and mountain areas of the Emirate, and it can sporadically rain.

Locals will say it’s too cold for swimming in winter in Dubai, but coming from Europe or any colder climate in the winter months, December to February, you’ll likely think it’s still delightful! Expect the lowest water temperatures mid-winter in Dubai of around 23.9°C (75°F). Many resorts will keep their pools heated in winter to a pleasant 28°C-30°C for guests’ ongoing pleasure during the coldest months.

The coolest days of winter will still top 20°C/68°F, even in January. You can expect daytime high temperatures in December of 26°C/78.8°F, January 24.2°C/76°F and February 25.6°C/78°F. It’s certainly not unheard of for the temperature to still go over 30°C/86°F in winter in Dubai.

Visiting Dubai in the winter months is frankly a great idea.

The weather is great – a far cry from the Dubai summer high temps – and the city is festive. If fact, winter in Dubai is indisputably the best time to go in terms of comfort.

But what about crowds? And what is there to do in the winter? Do you need to worry about rain?

I’ve visited the United Arab Emirates during all twelve months of the year, and I’m going to share with you what to expect when you go. I’ll cover the pros and cons of visiting Dubai in winter, as well as the best winter activities in Dubai and what clothes to pack.

By the end of this article, you will know exactly how to plan for winter in Dubai! Let’s dive right in.

Table of Contents

When Is Winter in Dubai?

Winter in Dubai is considered to be the months of December, January, and February.

During these three months, the temperatures are significantly cooler, especially compared to the summer months. The days are shorter, and it can be a great time for outdoor activities like camping, hiking and exploring.

In fact, from November through the month of March – late fall and early spring, respectively – the temperatures are typically very comfortable.

Though the temperatures are better, there are definitely some pros and cons to consider before booking your trip!

Pros of spending winter in Dubai:

  • The Weather. Winter is the perfect time for outdoor adventures in Dubai. During the winter in Dubai, you can explore outside to your heart’s content! Walk the souks, go on a safari , hang out on the beach, and check out the winter markets. Additionally, places like the Dubai Miracle Garden that close in the summer are wide open in the winter months. And these are just a few of the activities you can experience!
  • Seasonal Events  Several notable seasonal events take place in Dubai in the winter: Dubai Shopping Festival is a popular annual event that features discounts of up to 90% all over the city. There’s also the Taste of Dubai, which showcases three days of culinary delights. A complete list of Dubai’s winter season events can be found below. Suffice it to say, there is a lot to see and do!
  • New Years Eve. It will probably come as no surprise that Dubai’s New Years Eve celebrations are larger than life. The fireworks are unbelievable, the parties are out of this world, and just about everything you attend will be taken to a whole other level. No expense is spared to bring in the new year.

Monica on the orange dunes in the desert under cloudy skies during winter in Dubai.

Cons of spending winter in Dubai:

  • Higher Prices. The main drawback of traveling to Dubai in the winter is that prices will be higher. These months are considered the peak season in Dubai, for all of the reasons listed above. Therefore, you should expect hotels and flights to be pretty pricey. (I always get the best hotel prices here! )
  • Bigger Crowds. Due to the pleasant weather and festive events, the crowds will be noticeable. Without a doubt, Dubai feels alive and vibrant in the winter! But, if you hate crowds, this will likely bother you.
  • Possible Rain. Though it only rains an average of 14 days per year in Dubai, these rainy days are likely to happen in winter. So while I wouldn’t spend time worrying about rain in Dubai, I would recommend preparing for it in terms of planning a few indoor activities and in terms of what you pack. More on both of those below.
  • Heavier Clothing. Truth be told, my summer wardrobe for Dubai does not vary too much from the wardrobe I pack for winter in Dubai. I still pack loose and comfortable layers. However, the winter layers do tend to be thicker and heavier, which takes up just a bit more space in my suitcase. Check out my Dubai packing list here.
  • Shorter Daylight hours. Just like back in the USA, winter in Dubai means shorter daylight hours. While not a huge deal, this does cut down on daylight exploration hours and your timeframe for hiking and adventuring.

Pro Tip: The best place for outdoor adventure in the UAE is in Ras Al Khaimah , without a doubt! Mountain hiking, ziplining, and much more can all be found here.

Dubai Winter Weather

The winter months in Dubai are characterized by almost perfect weather. If you are coming from a snowy country, you will almost certainly appreciate the sun and warmth!

Weather is an important aspect in planning your vacation, and Dubai experiences mild winters. In fact, the winter in Dubai is still oftentimes warmer than the summer in other countries!

To be clear, “cold” is not a word I would typically use to describe winter in Dubai. Perhaps chilly at night is more accurate!

Dubai weather averages in winter and summer.

From December to the end of February, the average daytime temperature in Dubai ranges from 68-77ºF (20-25ºC), while during the night it drops to around 59-64ºF (15-18ºC). The weather during this period is more than favorable, I would say!

Let’s break things down further, and look specifically at Dubai’s weather in December, January, and February. Or, check your exact dates’ forecast here .

Dubai in December

December has an average temperature of around 70°F (21°C). Daily temperatures reach up to 79°F (26°C), with night lows of 61°F (16°C).

There are about 8 hours of sunshine and just four days with rainfall. The seawater temperature is ideal for swimming, averaging at 72°F (23°C).

Dubai in January

January in Dubai is a bit colder than December. The average temperature is 66°F (19°C). Daily highs reach 73°F (23°C) and the nightly lows drop to 52°F (14°C).

There are 8 hours of sunshine and 6 rainy days. The seawater temperature drops slightly to 70°F (21°C).

Dubai in February

In February, expect similar averages to January. The temperatures slightly rise compared to January, with average temperatures of 68°F (20°C), daily highs of 75°F (24°C), and night lows of 59°F (15°C).

There are 8 hours of sunshine, only four rainy days, and a seawater temperature of 70°F (21°C).

Dubai Winter Clothes: What To Pack?

Believe it or not, my wardrobe doesn’t change too drastically when visiting Dubai in winter vs. Dubai in summer. And that’s not because the temperatures are the same!

It’s because Dubai is an Islamic country, so females should dress modestly and stay fairly covered no matter the month.

However, in the winter months, my clothing may get thicker and have a few more layering options. Let’s get into the specifics below.

1. Sweaters and Kimonos

In Dubai’s winter, layering will be your best friend.

One thing I wear in  every single Middle Eastern country I visit is a flowy kimono. It is my most essential clothing item because it automatically makes an outfit modest. And in the winter, it will add a bit more warmth.

cold places to visit in uae

A Full Length Kimono

I highly recommend packing a full length kimono that you can throw on over any pant or legging.

I love long kimonos, since they cover your hips and waist in loose fabric. This is ideal in Muslim countries like the UAE.. Get yours here!

A Casual Kimono

If you prefer a shorter kimono look,  this kimono , is a great option! It has loose, opaque fabric that still keeps you covered.

Bonus, you can also use this kimono as a bathing suit cover up if you plan to hit the beach or hotel pool. Get yours here!

A Comfy Cardigan

A long loose cardigan is great for the winter in Dubai! It adds just enough fabric and warmth to beat the evening chill.

This one also covers your hips and waist, perfect for Dubai. Get yours here!

2. Long Pants

You will definitely want a couple of pairs of long pants for Dubai’s winter, as well.

I recommend packing three pairs of pants – one for the plane ride, to be washed and reused, and two fresh pairs for arrival. This of course can be modified depending on the length of your trip.

The perfect trifecta, in my opinion, consists of: comfy sweats, fitted leggings, and flowy pants.

Winter Clothing in Dubai: Quick Tips

  • Winter in Dubai is all about layers and modestly. Plan to dress in light, comfortable clothing and bring a sweater and heavy shawl to wear in the evenings
  • Thick maxi skirts are a great choice if you want to mix style and comfort. The length is ideal in terms of Dubai’s dress code and can also keep you warmer by blocking the wind.
  • Palazzo pants are a great option in both winter and summer in Dubai.
  • You still should pack a wide brim hat and sunglasses , even for winter in Dubai. While much cooler than the summer months, the sun still shines bright.

Dubai Winter Festivals and Activities

The best part about visiting Dubai in winter over any other season is all of the winter festivals and activities!

The city comes alive with holiday themed and winter themed sights. It is a fun experience to say the least.

Here are the best Dubai winter festivals and events that come around each year.

1. Global Village

Global Village is an annual winter event that is essentially a giant world fair.

Celebrate over 70 countries and cultures around the world through their tasty food, lively dance dance performances, and more.

Basically, Dubai Garden glow has something sure to impress everyone. It is fun for kids and adults alike, but those traveling with kids should especially consider a visit.

3. Dubai Winter City at Expo City

Christmas is not a holiday you would expect to be celebrated in Dubai. The UAE is a country guided by Islam, after all.

But, it is also a city of expats and grand celebrations. Because of that, Dubai Winter City at Expo City was born.

Located in the same dome-like park where Expo 2020 was help, this event will transport you from the sandy desert to the snowy North Pole in a heartbeat.

The “city” is transformed into an enchanting winter wonderland from the end of November to early January. Expect cozy-looking cabins, bustling Christmas markets, plentiful Christmas trees, a letter-to-Santa station, and much more.

Personally, I am glad they are reusing this large venue for other events after Expo 2020 ended.

The Winter City is a worthwhile stop if you do visit Dubai in winter! Consider it the perfect place to get your Christmas shopping finished.

4. The Walk at JBR Beach

The Jumeirah Beach Residence Walk spans approximately 1.1 miles of outdoor shopping. It features a variety of shops, department stores, boutiques, and restaurants throughout the year.

What makes it special in the wintertime is how t transforms into one of Dubai’s best winter wonderlands!

Christmas trees, colored lights, games, and more positively come alive on The Walk. You can even see Santa Claus himself here.

The festivities typically take place in December only and it is so worth visiting! Go at night to see the lights and grab some dinner.

They typically gather on the grounds next to Dubai Police Academy, in Umm Suqeim on Saturdays and Sundays beginning at 9am.

Anytime I visit Dubai in the fall and winter months I have to visit the Ripe Market.

6. Dubai Shopping Festival

The Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) is one of the most popular events in Dubai in the winter. It takes place every year in January and February, and it’s a popular festival for locals and visitors alike.

The DSF offers loads of shopping and entertainment specials, featuring deep discounts that you won’t get any other time of year. You’ll also find tons of different activities like fashion shows, concerts, and fireworks displays.

The fireworks are timed to music, similar to the famous Dubai Fountain, and they’re one of the most impressive sights in the city. Dare I say the world?

Does It Snow in Dubai?

While snow is extremely rare in this region of the world, snow has in fact touched down on UAE’s highest mountain peak, Jebel Jais.

Technically these snowfalls in Dubai   take place in the emirate and not the city itself. It’s a very rare phenomenon, but snow  has  fallen in Dubai.

If you are up for visiting some manmade snow attractions, you can actually find that in Dubai, too!

Ski Dubai  offers visitors a chance to take part in a variety of snowy activities. Feel free to ski, snowboard, meet penguins, ride a zip line or take a chairlift ride. And much much more.

Furthermore, if it rains during Dubai’s winter months, the rain will usually be brief but intense showers. These rains do not tend to impact local life in any way.

Planning a summer holiday is not as straightforward as it used to be, but if you are itching to get away, there are a number of destinations around the world that are currently welcoming travellers from the UAE. Here are 10 summer holiday ideas, with options for travellers who are both vaccinated and unvaccinated.

Cyprus is only a four-hour flight away and Emirates operates five weekly services to the Mediterranean island, making it a great option for shorter, last-minute trips.

The country is perhaps best known for its food and beaches, but is also home to a wealth of archeological sites, charming villages and a mountainous region that will offer much-welcome respite should you wish to fully escape the summer heat. There are currently no movement restrictions on the island, meaning you can enjoy its many attractions freely.

The UAE is categorised as a “red” country by the Cypriot authorities, meaning travellers from the UAE must take one PCR test prior to travel and then a second on arrival at the airport in Cyprus, at a cost of €30 (Dh130). You must then self-isolate until your results come through, which generally takes about a day.

Fully vaccinated travellers from the UAE can travel to Cyprus without having to quarantine or self isolate. The island recognises all vaccines approved by the European Medicines Agency, as well as Sputnik and Sinopharm. All travellers to Cyprus, vaccinated or otherwise, must complete an online Cyprus Flight Pass form within 48 hours of their departure from the UAE.

In spaces where a large number of people might congregate, such as wedding venues, theatres, cinemas, shopping malls and museums, you may be asked to show your Cyprus Flight Pass as part of random checks by authorised officers, so it’s worth keeping either a physical or digital copy on hand at all times. Checks will not take place in more open areas, such as parks, picnic sites, beaches, archaeological sites, theme parks, children’s play areas and outdoor restaurants.

At a mere 27 kilometres long, Malta is tiny. But it has been inhabited by the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Greeks, Arabs, Normans, French, British and, perhaps most visibly, the Knights of St John, resulting in a rich history that begs to be explored.

Made up of five islands – Malta, Gozo and Comino, plus two uninhabited islets in the Mediterranean Sea – the southern European country lies halfway between Gibraltar and Egypt’s Alexandria.

Its capital, Valletta, may be the smallest national capital in the European Union, but it’s also a Unesco World Heritage Site, and home to museums, 16th-century mansions, fortresses, narrow streets, boutique hotels, bars and restaurants, as well as the Upper Barrakka Gardens, a serene spot overlooking the Grand Harbour.

Malta has reopened to tourists with a traffic-light system in place and is currently on Abu Dhabi’s Green List. The UAE is dubbed amber by Maltese authorities, meaning that travellers can visit if they have a negative PCR test result taken no more than 72 hours before travel. All travellers also need to complete a public health passenger locator form before flying to Malta.

Zanzibar reopened its borders to tourists in May. Courtesy Camilla Frederiksen

A longstanding favourite with UAE travellers, Zanzibar has only grown in popularity since it reopened its borders to tourists in May.

Whether you want to spend your days exploring Stone Town's 19th-century Unesco-listed architecture, while away the hours on a semi-deserted beach, or get up close to nature at the Zanzibar Butterfly Centre or Mnarani Marine Turtles Conservation Pond, this archipelago has much to offer. August is Zanzibar’s driest month, with temperatures reaching about 26ºC, making it a cool escape from the UAE’s summer climes.

All travellers above the age of 5 are required to present a negative PCR test, taken within 72 hours of arrival in Zanzibar. They must also fill in a Traveller’s Surveillance Form before arriving and must hold valid insurance for the entirety of their stay.

If you’re looking for a bargain, The Residence Zanzibar is currently offering 45 per cent off room rates, plus a 25 per cent discount on food and beverages and 50 per cent off spa services. The property consists of 66 stand-alone villas, each with a private swimming pool, and is located 55 minutes from Stone Town.

A travel corridor between the UAE and Serbia means vaccinated travellers can fly between the two countries without having to quarantine, as long as they can show proof from a recognised authority that they have received their final shot of any Covid-19 vaccine.

Unvaccinated travellers can enter the country if they can show a negative PCR test taken within 48 hours of arrival, or a certificate showing that they have recovered from Covid-19 within the past six months.

This landlocked country in the heart of the Balkans remains relatively under the radar, so is ideal for those looking to steer clear of the madding crowds this summer. Temperatures average at around 30ºC in August. Flydubai currently offers daily direct flights to Belgrade with a flying time just under five-and-a-half hours.

Nestled between the Danube and Sava rivers and dubbed the White City, Belgrade is cool but gritty, with an intriguing mix of Socialist-era blocks and art nouveau architecture. Skadarska offers a taste of bohemian Belgrade, with its cobbled streets and galleries, while Savamala has been transformed into the city’s creative hub.

Those looking for a more active holiday can head to the south-east corner of the city, where, in the Avala Mountain and National Park, hiking trails and stunning views abound. Alternatively, take a stroll around Kalemegdan Park, which is set within the walls of a Roman fortress.

Flydubai operates daily flights to Belgrade. It's a five-and-a-half hour trip, with fares from Dh2,100

Mykonos, the fun-loving island of Greece

When Greece announced it was reopening its borders to tourists on May 14, the country’s tourism minister tweeted: "Greece is offering what people need. Calm and care-free moments on the road towards normality.”

Greece’s sun-drenched beaches, multi-faceted islands and exceptional cuisine will offer all the calm, care-free moments you need this summer, while its myriad historic sites, signature blue-and-white buildings and thriving local fashion scene will also entice.

As a result, Greece will be a no-brainer for many UAE travellers this summer, so expect popular tourist hot spots to be be busy over the coming months. Many visitors will head straight to the country’s islands – from fun-loving Mykonos to low-key Paros or honeymooner-favourite Santorini. Less-visited islands such as Kefalonia, Andros or Antiparos might be a better option for those still keen to avoid crowds. For those opting to stay in Athens, the historic neighbourhoods of Plaka and Monastiraki await, or, for a quieter experience, you can head to the suburbs of Kifisia or Vouliagmeni.

UAE travellers arriving in Greece are required to present either a negative PCR test, taken no more than 72 hours before arrival, or a negative antigen certificate taken no more than 48 hours before arrival. The UAE and Greece have established a travel corridor, meaning fully vaccinated travellers, including those with the Sinopharm vaccine, do not have to present a PCR test, as long as their second jab was taken at least 14 days prior to arrival. Travellers will also not need to quarantine when returning to Abu Dhabi.

All visitors must fill in a Passenger Locator Form at least one day before travelling and may be subject to random testing at the airport.

Flight time from the UAE to Athens is just over five hours. Emirates offers flights from Dubai with fares from Dh2,595; Etihad offers flights from Abu Dhabi for Dh1,768; Aegean Airlines and Wizz Air also fly between the two capitals

Azerbaijan is welcoming tourists from a select number of countries, including the UAE. Visitors must either show proof that they have been fully vaccinated, or present a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of arrival in the country. The country is on Abu Dhabi’s Green List, meaning travellers do not need to quarantine upon their return.

Known as the City of Winds, Azerbaijan’s capital, Baku, is a true amalgamation of old and new and east and west. Its medieval, Unesco-listed old city, known locally as Icherisheher, sits adjacent to the imposing, ultra-modern Flame Towers and the distinctive Zaha Hadid-designed Heydar Aliyev Centre.

Home to twisting alleyways, artists' workshops, traditional markets and authentic restaurants, the old city is encircled by 12th-century walls, while the newer parts of the city offer a delightful blend of Gothic, baroque, neoclassical and art nouveau architecture, as well as grand boulevards lined with designer shops. The city is clean, orderly and extremely pedestrian friendly. With a flight time of less than three hours, this is the perfect spot for a last-minute city break or an impromptu shopping trip with friends.

If you’re looking for a summer holiday that involves staying put in a stunning resort, Mauritius is your best bet. The Indian Ocean island is reopening its borders on July 15, with a two-phased approach. In the initial phase, from July 15 to September 30, it will welcome vaccinated travellers to enjoy holidays within 14 “resort bubbles”.

Guests will have to stay within their resorts, unless they are remaining on the island for longer than 14 days. Those staying for more than two weeks will be able to go out and explore the island after taking a PCR test on day 14 of their holiday.

Even though they must be vaccinated, all visitors must also show a negative PCR test upon arrival in Mauritius, taken between five and seven days before they travel. They will then have to take additional tests on days seven and 14 of their resort holiday, as applicable.

The 14 approved resort bubbles offer something for everyone. Those looking for an intimate, secluded, romantic stay can head to the luxurious Constance Prince Maurice, which is part of The Leading Hotels of the World and designed in accordance with feng shui principles. For a more active affair, Long Beach Mauritius is located on the island’s famed Belle Mare beach and offers diving, kayaking, snorkelling, water skiing, windsurfing, a climbing wall, tennis courts, group fitness classes and a gym. For those looking for a more budget-friendly holiday, the three-star Tropical Attitude and two-star Cocotiers Hotel Mauritius are also on the approved list.

Emirates operates two flights per week to Mauritius. It's a six-and-a-half-hour trip, with prices starting from Dh4,375

The Maldives was one of the first destinations in the world to start welcoming back tourists. Dnata

If you haven’t been vaccinated but an Indian Ocean island retreat appeals, the Maldives is a firm favourite . It was one of the first destinations to reopen to tourists and has so far been very successful in keeping visitors safe.

The archipelago’s “one island, one resort” concept means that social distancing occurs by default, making this an ideal option for people still keen to avoid too much social interaction.

The destination offers countless resorts, at varying price points, but if you want to be a pioneer, head to the Kuda Villingili, which opened in June. It’s a quick speedboat ride from Male, so you don’t have to worry about catching a sea plane, offers one of the best surf spots in the world, as well as one of the longest swimming pools in the Maldives, and is decorated with eco-friendly fittings and furniture, including carpets made from recycled plastic bottles.

All visitors, including those that have been vaccinated, must present a negative PCR test upon arrival in Male, taken no more than 96 hours before their departure.

Etihad flies to Male daily, with fares from Dh3,585; Emirates operates daily flights, with fares from Dh3,695; flydubai flights to Male start from Dh3,370. Flying time is four hours and 10 minutes

Thailand's largest, and arguably most famous island is open for business . Year-round sunshine, endless sandy beaches, the blue waters of the Andaman Sea and top-class Thai cuisine have long made Phuket a much-loved holiday destination.

Head to the southernmost tip of the island, Laem Chao, for breathtaking scenery and sunsets; stroll around old Phuket town to take in the traditional Sino-Portuguese architecture; wander through the Wat Chai Tharam temple; or decamp to one of the beaches on the northern coast, which are typically less crowded than those in the south.

On July 1, the southern Thai province removed all restrictions on fully vaccinated travellers. This applies to all vaccines, including Sinopharm. PCR tests are still compulsory before travelling, and need to be taken no more than 72 hours before departing for Phuket. Visitors will also need to complete subsequent PCR tests on days six and 12 of their holiday.

Travellers must also complete and submit a Certificate of Entry form before they travel. Finally, Covid-19 travel insurance with coverage for at least $100,000 is required, with policies offered by airlines not accepted.

Non-vaccinated travellers from non-red-zone countries, which includes the UAE, can also travel to Phuket, but must stay in a local quarantine hotel for 14 days upon arrival.

Etihad flies to Phuket three times a week, with fares from Dh1,795; Emirates operates four times a week, with fares from Dh1,995. Flying time is six hours and 30 minutes

African elephants (Loxodonta africana) at a waterhole - remote camera. Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya.

If a safari has been a longstanding feature on your bucket list, now could be a good time to make that wish come true. UAE travellers, vaccinated or otherwise, are not required to quarantine upon arrival in Kenya. They do need to present a negative Covid-19 test, fill in a passenger locator form before flying and then submit daily health information via the online Jitenge platform. A national curfew is currently in place from 10pm to 4am.

Head to the Masai Mara for safari lodges where social distancing is a given and wildlife experiences are infinitely more enjoyable now that there are fewer crowds. At this time of year, the rolling savannahs are teeming with wildlife, from giraffes and zebras to elephants, lions and cheetahs. Time your trip well and you may even see one of the world’s most spectacular wildlife phenomena – the Great Migration.

If you have a particular penchant for elephants, head to Amboseli National Park in the south of the country, where you’ll get prime wildlife spotting experiences against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak.

If you want to combine your wildlife spotting with a bit of beach time, head to Mombasa or the Unesco-listed Lamu Town, where you can spend hours exploring evocative backstreets that are brimming with Portuguese, Swahili, Omani and Zanzibari influences.

Emirates flies to Nairobi, with fares from Dh1,785; Etihad fares start from Dh1,090. Flying time is five hours

Study says it's likely a warmer world made deadly Dubai downpours heavier

C ircumstantial evidence points to climate change as worsening the deadly deluge that just flooded Dubai and other parts of the Persian Gulf, but scientists didn't discover the definitive fingerprints of greenhouse gas-triggered warming they have seen in other extreme weather events, a new report found.

Between 10% and 40% more rain fell in just one day last week — killing at least two dozen people in the United Arab Emirates, Oman and parts of Saudi Arabia — than it would have in a world without the 1.2 degrees Celsius (2.2 degrees Fahrenheit) warming that has come from the burning of coal, oil and natural gas since the mid-19th century, scientists at World Weather Attribution said Thursday in a flash study that is too new to be peer-reviewed.

In at least one spot, a record 11 inches (28.6 centimeters) of rain fell in just 24 hours, more than twice the yearly average, paralyzing the usually bustling city of skyscrapers in a desert.

One of the key tools in WWA's more than 60 past reports has been creating computer simulations that compare an actual weather event to a fictional world without climate change, but in the Dubai case there wasn’t enough data for those simulations to make such a calculation. But analysis of decades of past observations, the other main tool they use, showed the 10% to 40% bump in rainfall amounts.

Even without computer simulations, the clues kept pointing at climate change, scientists said.

“It’s not such a clear fingerprint, but we have lots of other circumstantial evidence, other lines of evidence that tell us that we see this increase,” said Imperial College of London climate scientist Friederike Otto, who coordinates the attribution study team. “It’s what we expect from physics. It’s what we expect from other studies that have been done in the area, from other studies around the world, and there’s nothing else that’s going on that could explain this increase.”

There is a long-known effect in physics that finds the air holds 7% more moisture with every degree Celsius (4% for every degree Fahrenheit).

Otto said she has confidence in the conclusion, but said this was one of the harder attribution studies the team has undertaken.

El Nino , which is a natural occasional warming of the central Pacific that changes weather systems worldwide, was a big factor, the report said. These heavy Gulf downpours have happened in the past but only during an El Nino. And the researchers said those past deluges seem to be trending heavier — something scientists have long said would happen in many parts of the world as the world warms.

This flooding, which came from two separate and near simultaneous storm systems, would not have happened without El Nino, said study co-author Mansour Almazroui of the Center of Excellence for Climate Change Research (CECCR), King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia. Nor would it have been like this without human-caused climate change, Otto added.

Because rainfall amounts varied over the region and the lack of data, the report couldn't put a figure on if climate change had increased the likelihood of downpours like this in Dubai, but Otto estimated that it's probably about three times more likely to happen now than in pre-industrial times.

The report and its authors threw cold water on speculation that UAE cloud seeding had anything to do with the amount of rain or its likelihood. Many scientists dispute cloud seeding's effectiveness in general. Even so, the clouds in the storm system were not seeded, the report said. And the results of cloud seeding, if any, in general are more immediate, Otto said. And this storm was forecast days in advance.

“This type of rainfall never comes from cloud seeding,” Almazroui said in a Thursday news conference.

While the authors use well-established techniques and this is what scientists expect with climate change, when there's a disagreement between computer simulations and observations, conclusions shouldn't be drawn, said University of Victoria, Canada, climate scientist Andrew Weaver, who wasn't part of the research.

It's a strong enough case that greenhouse gas emissions are a factor, several other outside scientists said.

University of Melbourne, Australia, climate scientist Malte Meinshausen called Thursday’s study “a well-balanced, impressively detailed and adequately cautious assessment.”

“This work, when combined with theory and attribution studies associated with the increasingly frequent other extreme rain and flooding events around the world, makes the convincing case that climate warming supercharged the recent extreme rainfall and flooding event UAE and Oman,” said climate scientist Jonathan Overpeck, dean of the University of Michigan's environment school. “This is what global warming increasingly looks like — more severe climate extremes and human suffering.”

Here's why we wake up to chilly mornings

Montpelier, Vermont, woke up to a chilly Friday morning, tying the record low temperature for this date at 22 degrees Fahrenheit. This record was previously set in 1967 at Montpelier-Edward F. Knapp State Airport (KMPV), where records date back to 1949.

The cold wasn't isolated to Montpelier, as much of New England experienced a hard freeze. Freeze warnings were issued for southern New England and coastal areas, with temperatures dropping significantly compared to the previous day. Many locations saw lows in the 20s.

This radiational heat loss cools the ground, and the air in contact with the ground cools down as well, leading to the significant temperature drop we experience at night sometimes.

Thankfully, this afternoon offers a decent rebound with high pressure still in control. Sunshine prevails with highs in the 50s to near 60 inland: about 5 to 10 degrees cooler than average for this time of year.

Friday night, the center of high pressure will move offshore, and while overnight lows will drop back to the 30s, it won't be quite as cold as Friday morning.

Patchy frost is still a possibility, so be sure to bundle up if you're heading out early Saturday morning.
