Recent tour reviews

I had always heard Coldplay were a fantastic band to see live. They did not disappoint last night at Fedex Field, right in the midst of their joyous and decidedly over-the-top Head Full of Dreams tour.

The show began with an explosion of color and light (including the LED wristbands supplied to every concertgoer) in the titular track on the band's touring album. Then came fan-favorite "Yellow," followed by "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall," the ever-popular "The Scientist," and "Birds" (the latter was a bit of a personal disappointment as it replaced the brilliant "God Put a Smile Upon Your Face" from recent setlists). This part of the show finished with the anthem "Paradise," featuring an incredible remix outro.

Next the show slowed down for an intimate trio of songs (most of us actually took a seat). This included one of the better tracks from the sub-par "Ghost Stories", "Magic."

Soon, however, things picked up with the timeless piano strokes of "Clocks," themed to a magical red light show. Next came the lighthearted "Charlie Brown." Before it began, lead singer Chris Martin asked everyone to put away their phones and simply enjoy the show. This was followed by the radio hit "Hymn for the Weekend," a candlelit (okay...Iphone flashlight lit) "Fix You," and "Viva la Vida." This last one was remarkable, as nearly the entire stadium knew the lyrics and sang along to the triumphant "Oh-oh-ohhhh" chant. The groovy "Adventure of a Lifetime" finished off this section, featuring Chris gettin' down with the audience, asking everyone to "Get low!"

Then came the highlight of the night for me: an acoustic quad of older (*cough* better *cough*) Coldplay songs which were as intimate as they were nostalgic. The lovely riffs of "In my Place" started off the set. "Don't Panic" was sung by drummer Will Champion; it's one of my favorites. But it couldn't top what was (for me) the best song of the night: "Trouble." Somber but beautiful in its own way, "Trouble" is a rare find in the setlists of today's Coldplay and was absolutely fantastic. Finally came another rare gem: "Green Eyes," which was somewhat marred by Chris's well-intentioned attempt at giving the local Redskins some luck (HA! what folly) by changing the lyrics.

The finale of the show was the hopeful and popular trio of "Something Just like This," "A Sky Full of Stars," and "Up and Up." This last track was played against the backdrop of the magical and visually stunning music video for the song.

And if there were two adjectives to sum up the show as a whole, they would be just that: magical and visually stunning. Thanks for an awesome show, Coldplay!

First of all I need to just say wow! Wow! Yesterday I experienced one of the greatest nights of my life. Yesterday I really did feel like I was part of something special, something so big and beautiful. The love, the happiness and the excaitment people were feeling last night were something you can't put words on. We stood in the rain for so many hours, we sat in a que and then we stood in the rain again.. but let me just say that when Coldplay came on stage they put on the best god damn show ever. You could really feel their thankfulness during the show. They promised us (in Chris Martins own words) "The best fucking show ever" and let me tell you it was! During the night I got to experience people from different countries dancing and singing along together, I got to experience that moment when Chris decided to write a new song about Sweden and Gothenburg! The night was amazing in so many ways. And just as he said during the night, that he believes when people are working together and last night everybody in that arena stood together. We celebrated the music, the evening and most of all we celebrated the love. Because in the end of the day Love is what matters and it will always win.

Yesterday was beautiful, just pure beautiful!

A Coldplay concert is a real face to face experience for a someone who love their songs. It may not be an intimate experience but considering the legions of fans that they have only a concert can accommodate everyone who are waiting all their lives for a chance to hear them live. and they never disappoint. A total performance complete with lasers and light and firework BUT without much fanfare, just them singing & playing their hearts OUT song after song alone or in harmony with the fans some crying, most gleefully dancing to their upbeat song or swaying OR slow dancing to slow Fix You or Yellow and probably thinking of someone they "cannot replace". Chris Martin is an awesome guy and so are the rest of the band. May their personal lives be as awesome as their professional lives, they deserve that too. as to Singapore, it may not be as engaging as it would be in the Philippines but hey, no one can complain; i had the best time celebrating my birthday in one of the best stadium this side of town with around 50K Coldpay fans celebrating with me :) :). Long live Coldplay, may you continue to bring joy to you fans worldwide. Looking forward to another Coldplay concert experience in the future.

Coldplay Pledges to Lower Carbon Emissions on 2022 Tour

On Thursday (Oct. 14), Coldplay announced the dates for its 2022 global tour in support of the upcoming album 'Music of the Spheres.'

By Gil Kaufman

Gil Kaufman

Coldplay announced the dates for an expansive 2022 world tour in support of the group’s upcoming Max Martin-produced album, Music of the Spheres  on Thursday morning (Oct. 14). The stadium outing is slated to kick off on March 18 with the band’s first-ever show in Costa Rica, at the Estadio Nacional, before moving on to the Dominican Republic and Mexico and then touching down in Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California on April 23 for a U.S. run slated to last through a June 14 gig at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.

H.E.R. is on board to support the majority of the dates, with London Grammar booked to open a July 10 show in Berlin and an Aug. 16 gig at Wembley Stadium in London. Tickets for the U.S. dates will go on sale to the general public on Oct. 22 at 10 a.m. local time here , with a release teasing that more dates will be announced soon.

In an effort to make the tour as sustainable as possible, the band announced that all the shows will be powered by 100% renewable energy, with pledges to cut tour emissions by 50% from the group’s 2016-17 world tour and plant one tree for every ticket sold. According to a release, each venue will be equipped with solar installations and other renewable power sources including waste cooking oil and a kinetic stadium floor with kinetic bikes powered by fans that will store energy in the first-ever mobile, rechargeable show battery.

Coldplay are also encouraging fans to use low-carbon transport to and from shows through the official tour app, rewarding those who do with a discount at the venues, in addition to making sure that all merch is sustainably and ethically sourced. There will also be free drinking water and efforts made to eliminate plastic bottles at every venue; click here to see the full list of sustainability goals.

In a statement, the band said, “Playing live and finding connection with people is ultimately why we exist as a band. We’ve been planning this tour for years, and we’re super excited to play songs from across our whole time together. At the same time, we’re very conscious that the planet is facing a climate crisis. So we’ve spent the last two years consulting with environmental experts to make this tour as sustainable as possible, and, just as importantly, to harness the tour’s potential to push things forward. We won’t get everything right, but we’re committed to doing everything we can and sharing what we learn. It’s a work in progress and we’re really grateful for the help we’ve had so far. If you’d like to come to a show and sing with us, we’re so excited to see you.”

Coldplay is bringing its ‘Music of the Spheres World Tour’ to Asia

British rock band Coldplay has announced that it will be bringing its ongoing tour to a number of Asian countries starting November.

Rejoice, Coldplay fans, because these lights are certainly guiding the British rock band back to Asia . Their “Music of the Spheres World Tour”, which kicked off last year in March, will be making its first stop in Japan for the Asian leg of the tour in November .

[Hero image: Coldplay FB]

Coldplay’s ‘Music of the Spheres World Tour’ is coming to Asia

Coldplay announced today that their “Music of the Spheres World Tour” will kick off in Asia on November 6 and 7 with Japan as their first location. They will then head to Taiwan, Australia, Indonesia, and Malaysia. For now, these are the locations they’ve announced, but we’re crossing our fingers that they include Bangkok soon.

The last time Coldplay was here was back in 2017 for their “Head Full of Dreams Tour”, which was held in Rajamangala Stadium. The nation was still in mourning after the passing of His Majesty the King, so Chris Martin dedicated a moving rendition of “Everglow” to him.

Aside from being the band’s first tour since the pandemic, the “Music of the Spheres World Tour” is also the first tour since the band decided to work out how their tours would be environmentally friendly. Reworking many aspects of their tour to lessen their carbon footprint, the band also pledged to plant a tree for every ticket sold.

While the band didn’t include Bangkok as one of its stops, that doesn’t mean we can hope/dream.

Coldplay Announce 2022 World Tour

By Madison Bloom and Jazz Monroe

Coldplay

Coldplay have announced a world tour behind their Max Martin–produced album Music of the Spheres . After declining to tour the album’s predecessor, Everyday Life , for environmental reasons, the band have pledged to cut tour emissions by 50 percent and adopt a broad model for sustainability, with each show powered exclusively by renewable energy. Coldplay plan to eliminate “significantly more CO2 than the tour produces” with initiatives including the planting of one tree for each ticket sold. Ten percent of all tour earnings will enter a fund for “environmental and socially conscious causes,” according to a press release. Check out the dates below.

In a statement, Coldplay said they were “very conscious that the planet is facing a climate crisis.” They continued, “So we’ve spent the last two years consulting with environmental experts to make this tour as sustainable as possible, and, just as importantly, to harness the tour’s potential to push things forward. We won’t get everything right, but we’re committed to doing everything we can and sharing what we learn.”

Initiatives include the use of solar installations at every venue, as well as energy generated from waste cooking oil, a kinetic stadium floor, and kinetic bikes powered by fans. A mobile, rechargeable show battery touted as the first of its kind will store the energy. The band will encourage fans to use low-carbon transport with an app that offers venue discounts as rewards, and will discourage single-use plastic bottles by providing free water. The band has also enlisted climate experts at Imperial College London’s Grantham Institute - Climate Change and the Environment to track the tour’s environmental impact.

H.E.R. will support most of the shows, with London Grammar on board for some dates.

Coldplay launched their Music of the Spheres rollout back in April with the release of lead single “ Higher Power .” They didn’t announce the album proper until July, and followed the news with two more tracks: “ Colortura ” and “ My Universe .” The latter features K-pop superstars BTS, and was released with a sci-fi visual directed by Dave Meyers.

Coldplay’s globe-trotting Music of the Spheres run c ould see them become the first band to gross $1 billion from a single tour.

The group topped Pollstar ‘s Worldwide Top 100 Artists chart for Q1 2024, earning $100.5 million from 13 concerts, including six nights at Singapore National Stadium. The top 3 also consisted of U2, whose Las Vegas Sphere residency garnered $95.2m, and Madonna’s The Celebration Tour , which grossed $86.2m.

The Music of the Spheres World Tour , which was the fourth highest-grossing trek of 2023, kicked off in Costa Rica in March 2022 and has an average gross of $6.1m, with 43 stadium dates remaining.

At last count it had earned $810.9m, having been attended by 7.66 million fans.

“It’s no surprise to me that Coldplay has become one of the most successful touring acts of all time”

“It’s no surprise to me that Coldplay has become one of the most successful touring acts of all time,” the band’s international agent Josh Javor of WME tells Pollstar . “The band has been setting trends and pushing the boundaries of how fans experience a concert for years. This show has a great value for the ticket price and is one that attendees truly never forget – the amount of pure entertainment that the band packs into one show is unparalleled!”

Should they surpass the billion-dollar mark, Coldplay would follow in the footsteps of Taylor Swift, whose Eras Tour officially become the first tour in history to surpass $1 billion in revenue last December.

This June, Coldplay will become the first act to headline Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage five times . They previously topped the bill in 2002, 2005, 2011 and 2016. The date will mark the band’s only European festival appearance of the year. Revisit IQ’s Music of the Spheres Tour feature here .

According to Pollstar data, the total of the Top 100 Tours in the first quarter of 2024 was up 35% year-over-year to $1.252bn – passing the billion-dollar mark for the first time in a Q1.

Watch Coldplay's Dazzling Live Performance of 'A Sky Full of Stars' from New Concert Film (Exclusive)

Coldplay - Music of the Spheres: Live at River Plate hits theaters on April 19 and April 23

coldplay last world tour

Coldplay is coming soon to a screen near you!

The British rockers recently announced the concert film Coldplay - Music of the Spheres: Live at River Plate , with a highlight being their live version of the 2014 hit "A Sky Full of Stars" — which PEOPLE is exclusively premiering.

The song features the stadium awash in lights as fans hold up LED wristbands in unison to emulate a star-filled sky, captured by 30 cameras, racing drones and 360° filming techniques.

The concert film was shot in Buenos Aires in late 2022, where Chris Martin , Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion played a sold-out, 10-night run at River Plate Stadium.

A live broadcast of the show aired in October, but a director's cut by Paul Dugdale is set to hit more than 2,000 theaters across dozens of countries on April 19 and April 23.

The film will feature appearances by H.E.R. and Jin , who was on hand to perform the live debut of his hit " The Astronaut," co-written by Coldplay .

Coldplay classics like "Yellow," "The Scientist," "Fix You," "Viva la Vida," and "My Universe" also all make the cut in the movie, which features unseen footage, interviews and backstage access, plus a behind-the-scenes short film.

The show is part of the band's Music of the Spheres Tour in support of the album of the same name, which was released in October 2021.

The record, Coldplay's ninth, featured hits like "Higher Power" and the BTS collaboration "My Universe," and was nominated for album of the year and best pop vocal album at the 2023 Grammy Awards .

The tour resumed in Brazil last month, and will return to the West Coast in September. The band made it a point to make the tour sustainable; it's powered by renewable energy, and every show features solar panels. Coldplay has also pledged to cut tour emissions by 50%, and have one tree planted for every ticket sold.

Fans wanting to catch Coldplay - Music of the Spheres: Live at River Plate in theaters can snag tickets now at www.coldplaycinema.live .

Depeche Mode mark ‘Memento Mori’ tour finale with epic ‘People Are Good’ video and remix package

It arrives as the band wrap up their extensive tour with two final shows in Cologne

Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode performs at Lanxess Arena on April 03, 2024 in Cologne, Germany

Depeche Mode are marking the end of their extensive ‘Memento Mori’ tour by sharing a huge remix package of ‘People Are Good’ – check out the new video below.

  • READ MORE: Depeche Mode: “Do the best you can – you don’t know if you’re going to be doing it again”

Announced today (April 5), the new release celebrates the upcoming finale show of their monumental UK and European tour dates , and sees them offer up new versions of their 2023 track, which was released as part of their latest album ‘Memento Mori’ .

The new video shared for the song is directed by Rich Hall and showcases an art-inspired variety of black-and-white snippets, capturing the seedier side of society.

As well as the new music video, new dimensions of the track have also been shared by the band, as they drop a digital release containing five new remixes.

These include new spins on the track created by Alessandro Cortini, Ludwig A.F., SiGNL, Obskür and Indira Paganotto.

Physical versions have also been shared too, with Depeche Mode releasing the final vinyl pre-order for their ‘Memento Mori’ White Label Remix Series – a monthly drop of 12” vinyl singles that build on the digital-only remixes of ‘Memento Mori’’s singles.

The final edition including ‘Before We Drown/People Are Good’ is available exclusively on the band’s webstore in the US, and at select physical retailers in Europe. Visit here to find out more.

The penultimate show of the band’s long-running tour takes place tonight (April 5) at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, and wraps up with a second night at the venue on Monday (April 8). You can purchase any remaining tickets here .

Last June, the Essex synth-pop veterans took to the stage at Twickenham Stadium for their first show in the capital in nearly six years, and first since losing longtime bandmate and close friend Andy Fletcher .

The set was given a glowing four-star review , with NME describing it as showing the band “at the top of their game and bonded in fraternity”.

“ Coldplay might insert LEDs into your gums while Muse  recreate War Of The Worlds with some balls-out bombast, but there’s an effortless cool to Depeche Mode’s stadium approach,” it read. “The Anton Corbijn stage design is sparse and simple, with just the giant M lettering of the new record and some tastefully simple visuals, leaving everything else down to the songs and personality with no pyro or pratting about.

“They may be demigods to their leather-clad cult, but tonight Depeche Mode have never seemed so human.”

Around the release of ‘Memento Mori’, Depeche Mode also spoke to NME last year, and both Dave Gahan and Martin Gore looked to the future of the band after the current tour.

“The most important thing is to be putting out good music and that people like it,” said Gore. “Once we finish this tour we’ll take a break, then we’ll see if and when we feel like doing it again. Up until now we always have. You never know, and I’m not saying that in a negative way. We just take each project as it comes.”

A damaged building in Hualien, after a major earthquake hit Taiwan's east.

Taiwan earthquake: nine dead and 900 injured as buildings collapse

Dozens believed trapped and awaiting rescue after island hit by 7.2-magnitude quake, its strongest in 25 years

‘People were screaming’: Hualien residents in shock after Taiwan earthquake

Taiwan’s strongest earthquake in 25 years has killed nine people and injured at least 900, causing building collapses, power outages and landslides on the island, and triggering initial tsunami warnings in southern Japan and the Philippines.

The fire agency said 64 people were trapped in one coalmine, and six in another, while rescue workers had lost contact with 50 people who were travelling in minibuses through a national park as the earthquake wiped out phone networks.

The quake, given a magnitude of 7.2 by Taiwan’s earthquake monitoring agency and 7.4 by the US, struck close to Hualien, a city popular with tourists on Taiwan’s eastern coast, damaging buildings and trapping people amid aftershocks after the quake, which started at 7.58am.

Videos on social media showed children being rescued from collapsed residential buildings. One five-storey building in Hualien appeared heavily damaged, its first floor collapsed and the bulk of the building leaning at a 45-degree angle.

Taroko national park in Hualien said nearly 1,000 tourists and staff were stranded in its mountains. Local media reported that three hikers and one driver died after rockslides in the park.

Taiwan’s Centre for Science and Technology (CST) said people and vehicles were trapped in the Dachingshui tunnel. Train lines were also damaged, and schools and workplaces were closed across large areas of the city. Tens of thousands of homes were without power.

Witnesses in Hualien described driving while rocks dislodged from nearby mountains fell down around them, while others rushed outside after feeling the strength of the tremors.

People rescue a child from a partially collapsed building

Farther north, part of the headland of Guishan Island, a tourist attraction also known as Turtle Island because of its shape, slid into the sea. In the capital, Taipei, several people were rescued from a partly collapsed warehouse, and tiles fell from buildings.

Although it was measured at 7.7 in Japan , Taiwan’s earthquake monitoring agency gave the magnitude of Wednesday’s quake as 7.2, making it Taiwan’s strongest since 1999, when a 7.6-magnitude quake 93 miles (150km) south of Taipei killed 2,400 and injured 10,000.

Hualien’s last big quake in 2022, recorded as 6.9 magnitude, toppled buildings and derailed a train, killing one person and cutting off power for thousands of residents.

Wednesday’s quake caused TSMC, Taiwan’s leading semiconductor manufacturer, which is responsible for the production of most of the world’s advanced semiconductors, to evacuate its production lines, according to Bloomberg News.

Taiwan’s CST said more than 15 aftershocks exceeding a magnitude of 4.0 had occurred so far, but the magnitude had been decreasing.

Damage was visible on some buildings in central Taipei, such as outside the Howard Plaza hotel, where the earthquake had damaged brickwork and dislodged some of the lettering on the hotel’s sign.

Mike Hung Hsu, a hotel guest from the US, said he was woken up by the earthquake. “I’ve never felt this kind of earthquake in LA, even though we have earthquakes pretty often,” he said. “I used to live in Taiwan, in my memory we never had an earthquake like this one.”

Japanese media initially said the quake could trigger waves as high as 3 metres in some areas of Okinawa prefecture, located roughly 1,600km south of Tokyo, but the forecasts were later downgraded. Japan’s meteorological agency lifted all tsunami advisories at around noon local time, while the chief cabinet secretary, Yoshimasa Hayashi, said there had been no reports of injury or damage.

However, an official from Japan’s meteorological agency urged people to continue evacuating until the advisory was lifted. Some residents of the main Okinawa island had evacuated to a nearby US military base, media reports said, while footage showed others watching the sea from the safety of high ground in the prefectural capital, Naha.

The agency has warned that aftershocks, with a similar intensity to those felt in Taiwan, may be likely over the next week.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake’s epicentre was 18km (11 miles) south of Taiwan’s Hualien city at a depth of 34.8km.

The Philippines’ seismology agency on Wednesday issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas fronting the Pacific Ocean, saying they were expected to experience “high tsunami waves” but later lifted the warning.

Rescuers search toppled buildings after powerful Taiwan quake – video report

It has been only three months since a magnitude-7.6 quake and tsunami killed 244 people and caused widespread damage on the Noto peninsula in Ishikawa prefecture on the Japan Sea coast.

Japan’s biggest earthquake on record was a 9.0-magnitude undersea jolt in March 2011 off Japan’s north-east coast, which triggered a tsunami that left about 18,500 people dead or missing.

China’s Taiwan Affairs Office said it was “highly concerned” about the earthquake, which was also felt in coastal cities in China’s Fujian province, and offered to provide assistance.

A Tour Through Solar Eclipses of the Past

Also pictured are some of the many observers sharing this fleeting experience, “ witnessing the planetary version of a lightning strike ,” together in stadiums, parks, and beaches.

“And to beat Judd Trump 10-4 in the quarters-finals, well he’s doing a lot of things well.”

Ronnie is still ruthless

Ex-Masters champ Alan McManus reckons Ronnie O'Sullivan has lost some of his "magic".

Bu the ITV pundit says the Rocket has replaced that flair with robotic ruthlessness, including in yesterday's 10-2 defeat of Ali Carter.

O'Sullivan, 48, himself is upset by what he considers his current loss of peak form and enjoyment.

And McManus said: "I kind of get what Ronnie’s driving at when he’s saying he’s frustrated with certain things

"I’ve been saying this for three or four years, I think some of the magic of O’Sullivan has gone and what I mean by that is the showboating long

"He gets in close, he was 95 per cent positional play today in the match [against Carter] and that’s very, very high.

"That means that you’re right in behind the next shot pretty much every time and that means he can break-build. He makes it look a bit matter of fact.

"I think some of those extravagant shots have gone from his game and he doesn’t need them because of his talent, he doesn’t need it. It’s systematic dismantling of opponents."

Frame of mind

Ronnie O’Sullivan is dialled in for this month’s Crucible as he has reunited with mind mentor Steve Peters.

Speaking ahead of today’s Tour Championship semi-final in Manchester, O’Sullivan revealed he has hooked up with Peters – author of mind management book The Chimp Paradox – ahead of the sport’s flagship event.

O’Sullivan said: “I dip in and out with Steve. Obviously I’ve learned a lot, I’ve read the book, I apply it a lot to my job. But then I just go on autopilot and do my own thing.

“He said it’s a bit like going to the gym. If you stop going to the gym, you lose your muscle mass.

“He said: ‘The stuff you do with me, I can only show you but you’ve to do the work.’

"It’s quite repetitive but once you do it, it sort of tightens your mind up a bit. I need it."

Everything you need to know

Here's everything you need to know about this year's Tour Championship.

How does the Tour Championship work?

The Tour Championship 2024 is the third and final event in the Players Series that brings the best players of the season together based on current form.

In recent years, it had been a field of eight players but this will be expanded to the top 12 from the one-year ranking list.

Organisers have confirmed that the top four will be seeded straight into the quarter-finals, with the other eight to compete in the opening round.

And all matches are played at the best of 19 frames over two sessions.

Current seeding list

  • Judd Trump - 711,000 pts
  • Ronnie O'Sullivan - 435,500 pts
  • Zhang Anda - 334,000 pts
  • Ding Junhui - 256,000 pts
  • Mark Allen - 244,500 pts
  • Gary Wilson - 211,500 pts
  • Barry Hawkins - 203,000 pts
  • Mark Williams - 203,000 pts
  • Tom Ford - 177,000 pts
  • Ali Carter - 174,500 pts
  • Mark Selby - 173,000 pts
  • John Higgins - 142,500 pts

What is the prize money?

There will be a total of £500,000 in the pot.

This is £120,000 more than the full prize money pot in 2023 when Shaun Murphy took home a share of £150,000.

Here is the full breakdown:

  • Winner: £150,000
  • Runner-up: £60,000
  • Semi-final: £40,000
  • Quarter-final: £30,000
  • First round: £20,000
  • Highest break: £10,000

Friends Reunited

Ronnie O'Sullivan has also revealed he is back working with psychiatrist and mentor Steve Peters.

The Rocket has been struggling backstage and returned to Peters, with whom he has worked on and off for a decade, ahead of the World Championships.

O'Sullivan told Peters: “I feel ill with pressure. It’s f***ing horrible. I hate it. I feel f***ed.

“My energy’s drained. I feel like I have stage fright. I feel like I want to cry. I’m scared. I’m f***ing gone.”

Speaking ahead of Friday’s Tour Championship semi-final in Manchester, O’Sullivan revealed he has hooked up with Peters – author of mind management book The Chimp Paradox – ahead of the sport’s flagship event.

It is, in effect, a warning to the rest of the baize fraternity because if O’Sullivan’s mind is right, then he will be switched-on and primed for a tilt at world title No 8.

First semi-final today

Ronnie O'Sullivan' s semi-final with Gary Wilson opens today's Tour championship action from Manchester at 1pm.

Wilson completed a 10-8 defeat of Zhang Anda yesterday.

O'Sullivan has had extra resting time as he crushed Ali Carter 10-2.

Saturday sees Mark Williams v Mark Allen in the other last-four clash.

Gary Wilson will have to beat the Rocket to reach the final

Rocket wants to go back to 'instincts'

The world's greatest snooker player says he needs to be less of a "perfectionist" and more of his old "instinctive" self.

And he's again using a sports psychiatrist, who he's worked with on and off since 2011, to helm him rediscover his fun and flair at the table.

The Rocket told ITV: "I had to call Steve Peters up the other day.

"‘I said, 'look, I am really struggling, it’s doing my head in, trying to figure it out'.

”It has been the story of my life really. So, it’s nothing new.

"But I decided I would go back to work with Steve Peters, try to change my thinking and hopefully once I have changed my thinking, I will try and be a bit less of a perfectionist.

"Hopefully then my game will fall into place because I am an instinctive player and thinking is not good for me."

Ronnie is safer but just as dangerous

Stephen Hendry claims Ronnie O'Sullivan has changed into a "percentage player".

But with the two legends locked on seven world titles each, the Scot stresses that verdict is far from the insult many might see it as for a player with such a magical, mercurial reputation as the Rocket.

Hendry told ITV: "He’s become…sometimes 'percentage player' is a derogatory term, but he’s a percentage player, he doesn’t take any risks.

"He plays a great safety, he gets in and takes what’s there and that’s a powerful weapon."

'Only 4 or 5 good displays'

Ronnie O'Sullivan is scathing of his performances this year despite results mostly going well.

He said: "There has been the odd match. Probably been four or five.

"In Tianjin [International Championship] I played well, from start to finish, in that tournament. Wuhan [Open] I played alright.

"Played a few good matches in the UK. That is about it. Most of it has not been great."

Rocket can't get no satisfaction

Ronnie O'Sullivan reckons he's never had a worse year - technically.

The Rocket is into the Tour Championship semi-finals but says it's no fun "grinding" out wins.

O'Sullivan, 48, told ITV: "This year I’ve got the wins but technically I’ve been terrible, probably my worst year technically.

"I’ve had to grind out the wins and that’s never going to give me much satisfaction."

Mark of pride

Mark Allen says he was "proud" of how he stuck to his "beliefs" during a tense comeback defeat of Ding Junhui.

The Englishman seems reasonably near his best again.

But he was most impressed by how he didn't try to alter his style too much - following bigger changes in recent months.

He told ITV: "When i was quite proud of myself at 8-7, sticking to my beliefs.

"I've tinkered with a lot in recent months, just wrist action at the moment."

Allen latest to bemoan 'tough' table'

There have been murmurs about table conditions at the Manchester Central venue.

And perhaps the latest, clearest alert has come from quarter-final winner Mark Allen.

After edging past Ding Junhui 10-8 tonight, Allen said: "I played a bit better tonight on what was a tough table to play on.

"There was a lot of good stuff but the table was tough.

I don't want to make excuses for us. But it was a different game at times."

Ding 8-10 Allen

Allen's brilliant 127 break is a fitting finale to his entertaining comeback win.

The Englishman is into the semi-finals and looking as good as anyone after edging out the dangerous Ding.

And here's how he bowed out...

coldplay last world tour

Allen century clinches it...

Allen is sure to win now as he builds past 100 in the 18th frame.

Ding 8-9 Allen

Allen's 56 break puts him one frame from the last four.

Allen on brink of lead

Allen has built a half-ton that will leave Ding needing snookers - or worse - in this 17th frame.

Ding 8-8 Allen

A loose shot on the re-potted black cost Ding.

He'd battled back from 65 behind with 67 on the table.

But he left the black hanging over the far corner - easy for Allen.

Now each player needs two frames to reach the semi-finals.

74-74! Black re-spotted

This 16th frame is so important - and so close...
