ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. (AP) — PGA Tour rookie Austin Cook won the RSM Classic without being seriously challenged, closing with two birdies for a 3-under 67 and a four-shot victory.

The victory Sunday in the final PGA Tour event of the calendar year gives Cook a spot in the Masters next year.

Cook had a three-shot lead at the start of the final round at Sea Island. He made bogey from the bunker on the second hole and then didn’t drop a shot the rest of the way. Cook gave himself breathing room with a two-putt birdie on the 15th and a 15-foot birdie on the 17th.

J.J. Spaun closed with a 66 and was runner-up.

'Let him cook': Tour pro lives up to viral catch phrase with home win, eyes big 2024 season on PGA Tour

1814240187

Min Woo Lee leans into his viral catch phrase "Let him cook" by wearing a chefs hat as he closed in on the win at the 2023 Australian PGA Championship.

Bradley Kanaris

BRISBANE, Australia — It's hard to know where Min Woo Lee does his best work. Tournament results this year suggest it's on golf's biggest stages. But one could argue it's on social media. There, the younger brother of LPGA star Minjee Lee does everything from mobilize his 600,000-plus total followers with a catchphrase, "Let him cook," to obtaining Steph Curry's cell phone through Instagram DMs.

"I'm in the TGL, and he's an investor," Lee said. "I messaged him and said, 'Get me on your team.' He hasn’t messaged me back [laughs]."

Lee is among professional golf's post-TikTok generation; joining the paid ranks after the video platform was created in 2016. He's as comfortable chipping in for eagle during a DP World Tour victory as he is posting a video online. His drives regularly reach 190 mph in ball speed. His short game resembles wizardry. And on Sunday, he did all of the above during a stunning three-shot win at the Australian PGA Championship.

Lee, 25, fended off a field of stars from Australia, Europe and Asia to capture the first of two tournaments that make up the DP World Tour’s Down Under swing. Lee began the final day with a three-shot lead at Royal Queensland and a closing 68 gave him a 20-under-par 264 total. He defeated runner-up Rikuya Hoshino of Japan for his third career DP World Tour win. Lee is expected to rise to a career-high No. 38 on the Official World Golf Rankings when the next listing becomes is posted on Monday.

Australian Marc Leishman (64) was third at 16 under. Former U.S. Amateur champion Curtis Luck (69) was fourth, while LIV golfer Joaquin Niemann was fifth at 13 under, making an ace at the par-3 fourth. Adam Scott (sixth), Lucas Herbert and Cameron Davis were some of the names in the top 10.

The final scoreboard didn't reflect how close the scores were early. Lee's overnight lead was gone after two holes when Hoshino started the final day birdie-birdie while Lee made bogey-par. But only moments later, World No. 45 Lee showed why he finished T-6 at the Players this year and T-5 at the U.S. Open. Lee nearly aced the par-3 fourth and almost drove the 390-yard par-4 sixth. He birdied the par-5 seventh before setting up the shot of the tournament.

In the rough short of the green at the 574-yard, par-5 ninth, with Hoshino snapping at his heels, Lee, a former U.S. Junior champion, pitched his ball up and ran it 30 feet into the hole for eagle. He let out a primal scream, knowing the back nine was likely going to be a procession.

“I think that was probably the best atmosphere shot I’ve ever hit,” Lee said of the eagle.

After three birdies and a bogey in the middle of the inward nine, Lee walked through the tunnel at the par-3 17th with a four-shot lead. The 17th was styled as a party hole with bleachers full of bars and well-lubricated fans. Lee missed the green left, but played a deft pitch shot and made the four-foot par putt. Even a bogey at the 72nd hole couldn't dampen Lee's triumph.

“It's unbelievable,” Lee, who is PGA Tour-bound in 2024, having secured enough non-member FedEx Cup points to qualify for a card in the new year, said. “I’ve always thought I could win, but it took a while to get over the hump. Two wins in the last month or so, I’m really proud of my team and myself. There are no limits. I want to be the No.1 player in the world."

Watching on television was Lee's two-time major winner sister, Minjee. The 27-year-old had just gotten to Australia from the U.S. ahead of next week's Australian Open in Sydney, which is a mixed gender event.

"So proud, congrats to my little bro. Winner," Minjee posted to social media, with some relevant emojis.

The Lees have become pro golf's most fascinating siblings. Minjee, who recently secured her 10th LPGA Tour victory at the BMW Ladies Championship in October, and has two majors to her credit at age 27. She's the quiet, reserved one of the two, who hail from Perth on Australia's west coast. “You could say I’m the opposite,” Lee told Australian Golf Digest recently. "I think he’s just really comfortable showing his personality. I’m just a little bit more introverted.”

“Minjee’s a one-of-a-kind golfer and I’m slowly becoming a name myself," Lee said. "Every time I win, it seems like next week she wins. So, if you guys want to put some money on my sister next week."

Min Woo is the showman. His occasionally errant tee shots and thrilling escapes make him more like some of the other names on the Australian PGA trophy: Seve Ballesteros (1981), Greg Norman (1984, ’85), and Joe Kirkwood, the Australian pro and traveling trick-shot artist after whom the trophy is named.

So it was appropriate that on the 72nd green, during an interview, Lee said of his chip-in eagle, "I wanna see [the video] straight away. I would like to see it."

Well, that's easy. It's already on social media.

For John Cook, Galleri Classic represents a homecoming and a going-away party

cook pga tour

John Cook is a full-time golf announcer and part-time professional golfer these days, but the prospect of playing in the new Galleri Classic in Rancho Mirage was too good for Cook to pass up.

“It’s going to be quite a week. I’m really excited about it obviously,” said Cook, who spent the 1970s growing up at Mission Hills Country Club, the site of the Galleri Classic.

Cook continued to play the Dinah Shore Tournament Course in the 1980s and the 1990s during a pro career that produced 11 events on the PGA Tour. But in the last two decades, Cook has rarely seen his old home course.

“I’ve been back since we had moved away to watch Jason (his son) play a couple of AJGA events, but I have not been back to play since, well, 1999 I think was the last time I played it,” Cook said.

The Galleri Classic will offer a full circle closure for Cook, now 65 and spending most of his time working for Golf Channel. In fact, the new PGA Tour Champions event will likely end Cook’s professional career.

“I chose the Hoag (Classic) at Newport Beach and I chose Mission Hills,” Cook said. “These will probably be the last two I play, quite honestly. I don’t see myself older than 65 years old trying to come out and compete. What better places to call it a career than Newport and Mission Hills.”

Cook has already made history in the desert, winning the 1992 and the 1997 Bob Hope Classics, the tournament now known as The American Express. But even as Cook transitioned to the 50-and-over PGA Tour Champions, winning another 10 tournaments along the way, he hoped he would get a chance to play in the Coachella Valley again with a senior event.

Galleri Classic golf tournament 2023: Tickets, parking, schedule and more

“Once they announced the (LPGA Tour) was leaving, I thought it was a perfect fit,” Cook said. “I had nothing to do with it, although I had mentioned to Miller Brady (president of the PGA Tour Champions division) something about it and he said, oh, it’s already in the pipeline. Alright, okay, I thought it was a perfect fit.”

Part of the reason the PGA Tour Seniors seems like a strong fit for the Coachella Valley is players like Cook who have long histories in the desert because of The American Express. Cook’s personal history includes a playoff loss in the 1986 event to Donnie Hammond and then two of the most dramatic victories in tournament history.

In 1992, Cook won a five-man playoff at Bermuda Dunes, making birdies on the first three holes with a chip-in and then chipping in for an eagle on the fourth hole to beat Gene Sauers. In 1997, Cook shot rounds of 62 and 63 on the weekend at Indian Wells Country Club, setting a then-tour record for 36-hole scoring in beating Mark Calcavecchia by a single shot. Calcavecchia led by three starting the final round and shot 67, but still fell to Cook.

“Poor Calc reminds me all the time,” Cook said. “Every time I play with Gene Sauers or Calcavecchia, they remind me of those two years.”

Those were the days when Cook still lived at Mission Hills, then a place where both PGA Tour and LPGA players lived or used as a West Coast base for their careers. Cook and his family first came to Mission Hills in 1971, with Cook falling under the wing of former U.S. Open champion Ken Venturi, who was the director of golf at the course.

Cook won the U.S. Amateur in 1978 while playing at Ohio State and was part of the school’s 1979 NCAA championship team. He turned pro later that year, but remained at Mission Hills.

“I think that we were playing it every day, Fred (Couples) and me and George Brett (Kansas City Royals third basemen and club member) or Kirk Triplett, who was around at the time a little bit, Mike Mitchell (Cook’s friends and a Mission Hills teaching pro),” Cook said. “When we all played it, remember this is back in the 1980s and the 1990s, the golf ball was doing what it was doing and it was a very formidable golf course. We would play either the gold tees or a combination, and it was very formidable.”

When the LPGA announced its major championship at Mission Hills, now the Chevron Championship, was moving to Houston for 2023, Cook was excited but confused.

“I was kind of shocked. Fifty-some years, you don’t just pull the plug on history and a major championship and what the LPGA is all about and who played there into the early ’70s and then into Lorena (Ochoa) and Annika (Sorenstam),” Cook said. “That’s really kind of a head scratcher.”

Cook said he basically retired from tournament golf five years ago as his television schedule with Golf Channel increased. He could still play a few times a year, but he didn’t play at all in 2022 while battling melanoma below his eye. While the cancer was invasive and moved into his check, he is now healthy and has been playing.

“I’m a lot better than I was last year,” Cook said.

With the chance to play Mission Hills one last time and with Michelle DeLancy named as tournament director after years of running the Boeing Classic in Seattle, Cook figured he could play two final senior events in Southern California.

“I thought, you know, I’ve been playing a little bit and I have been playing okay,” Cook said. “I’m not going to embarrass myself. So I thought why not? Why not go back and play?”

As for ending his tournament playing days, Cook believes the Galleri will be the perfect sendoff.

“Honestly, I’m as excited as I can be,” Cook said. “We’ve got the great support of my family. Our daughter from Australia is coming, bringing our granddaughter. My son is going to caddie for me and my oldest daughter and her family are coming. It is going to be pretty special.”
