PLEASE NOTE: ALL SCHEDULES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE

The Cruise Director assignments and schedule is subject to change as the needs aboard different ships change. Schedules often overlap with another Cruise Director at the beginning and end assignments. This allows the new Cruise Directors to become accustomed to a new ship, and learn what activities and entertainment the ship offers.

The schedules are fluid and may also have gaps that will be filled closer to the actual calendar date in the future. Many famous cruise directors are not currently on the assignment schedule. This often only means they may be on vacation leave or haven’t finalized a contract commitment yet.

This schedule can change frequently, and if you want to sail with a particular cruise director, you should  check the schedule regularly  to learn where your favorite cruise director may be assigned.

FAQs About Carnival Cruise Directors?

What does a carnival cruise director do.

On a Carnival Cruise , the Cruise Director is the most visible and also “the voice” of the ship, making many of the public announcements. The Cruise Directors often host events like deck parties, gameshows, and more. They also help keep guests informed about what’s happening on the ship during the cruise.

How many cruise directors does Carnival have?

Carnival has around 30 to 40 cruise directors. Its fleet consists of 25 ships, each with a Cruise Director onboard. The schedule often shows two Cruise Directors onboard at times. This is often for training and orientation purposes as well as transitional periods at the beginning and end of contract periods. Cruise directors’ contract periods can often last four months, with time off in between.

How long do Carnival cruise directors stay?

Carnival cruise directors typically have contractual assignments that last for a certain period. The duration of their stay can vary depending on the specific assignment and ship. Cruise directors may stay on a ship for several months before being reassigned to another ship or taking a break. The schedules are subject to change as the needs aboard different ships change. It’s important to note that schedules often overlap with another cruise director at the beginning and end of assignments to allow for transition and familiarization with the ship’s activities and entertainment. If you have a specific cruise director in mind, checking the schedule regularly for any updates or changes is recommended.

How much do cruise directors make on Carnival?

Cruise directors’ salaries at Carnival Cruise Line can vary based on experience, qualifications, and specific contract terms. A new cruise director’s salary ranges from $45K to over $100K annually. Additionally, cruise directors receive complimentary travel, accommodations, meals, and more benefits.

Is the Carnival Cruise director schedule final?

The Carnival Cruise Director’s schedule is subject to change. While the schedule provided may be accurate at the time of publishing, it is always a good idea to check the schedule for any updates or changes. The needs aboard different ships can change, and schedules often overlap with another Cruise Director at the beginning and end of assignments to allow for transition and familiarization with the ship’s activities and entertainment

45 Years at Sea! An Interview with Cruise Director Gary Hunter

For the past month, we’ve been sharing some of our favorite cruise memories from our readers and from the Porthole team. When Porthole Cruise Magazine Editor-in-Chief Bill Panoff was working on board Carnival ships in the 1970’s, one of his best friends on board was entertainer Gary Hunter. With decades of combined experience in the industry, Bill and Gary know just about everything there is to know about cruising. They discuss the current state of cruising and how the industry will have to rebound after COVID-19.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Cruise Control (@cruisecontrolbp) on Mar 31, 2020 at 9:35am PDT

Gary was kind enough to join Bill for an interview about what his experience was like as a ventriloquist and now as a soon-to-retire cruise director for Crystal Cruises.

Back in 1975 when I started in the cruise industry, I had no idea. I knew nothing about the cruise industry

Gary explains how he made it from a small variety show in Bradenton, FL to entertaining guests on some of the world’s first cruise ships.

Gary fondly recalls a few of his favorite bits and performances over the years before introducing us to Mrs. Tweed, his trusty sidekick and friend!

Carnival Reveals Directors for 3 Ships & Mardi Gras Sub

Picture of Sarah Bretz, Contributor

  • July 13, 2021

Carnival Cruise Line has announced who the cruise directors will be on three more ships that are re-entering service this summer, and named a temporary cruise director for  Mardi Gras .

Here are the scheduled cruise directors for Carnival Magic, Carnival Sunrise, and Carnival Panorama:

  • Gary Blair — Carnival Magic out of Port Canaveral, Florida
  • Felipe Couto — Carnival Sunrise out of Miami, Florida
  • Lee Mason — Carnival Panorama out of Long Beach, California

The announced cruise director for Carnival’s largest and newest ship,  Mardi Gras , is Mike Pack. But given that he and his wife, former cruise director Emma Nixon, have a newborn baby, Pack is taking some time off to enjoy his little family’s new addition.

In his place, Chris Williams “The Flying Scotsman” will be serving as interim cruise director for  Mardi Gras’  first series of voyages, with Pack joining the vessel at a later date.

“We are back – and the fun is back – bigger and better than ever, and who better to lead the charge in that fun than our wonderful cruise directors,” said Chris Nelson, vice president of entertainment for Carnival Cruise Line.

“As we continue to expand our guest operations and welcome guests back on board, it is so special and exciting to also bring our cruise directors back and to finally give our guests the amazing vacation experiences they know and love.”

Carnival Cruise Line resumed passenger operations this month when  Carnival Vista  sailed from Galveston on July 3 and  Carnival Horizon  sailed from PortMiami on July 4.

Cruises on  Carnival Breeze  are set to begin on July 15 and Alaska cruises aboard  Carnival Miracle  are scheduled to begin on July 27.

On July 31,  Mardi Gras  is set to make her debut voyage from Port Canaveral.

Carnival Cruise Line Announces Cruise Directors for Next Round of Ships This Summer

  • July 13, 2021

cruise director gary

Carnival Cruise Line has announced the lineup of cruise directors who will entertain guests on the next round of ships entering service in August from Port Canaveral, Miami and Long Beach, marking the start-up of its West Coast operations.

At the helm of the excitement onboard will be Gary Blair (pictured bottom right) on the Carnival Magic from Port Canaveral, Felipe Couto (top right) on the Carnival Sunrise from Miami and Lee Mason (bottom left) on the Carnival Panorama from Long Beach.

“We are back – and the fun is back – bigger and better than ever, and who better to lead the charge in that fun than our wonderful cruise directors,” said Chris Nelson, vice president of entertainment for Carnival Cruise Line.

“As we continue to expand our guest operations and welcome guests back on board, it is so special and exciting to also bring our cruise directors back and to finally give our guests the amazing vacation experiences they know and love,” he added.

Giving Mike Pack and his wife, former Carnival cruise director Emma Nixon, time to enjoy their newborn baby, Chris Williams (top left) will serve as the Mardi Gras’ cruise director for its first series of voyages.

The line returned to guest operations in early July with the Carnival Vista from the Port of Galveston and the Carnival Horizon from PortMiami. Sailings on the Carnival Breeze begin Thursday and the Carnival Miracle later this month, followed by the debut of Carnival’s newest ship, the Mardi Gras, on July 31.

A Lifetime of Stars, Staterooms & Stowaways

Long-time Cruise Director Gary Glading created a real phenomenon with his debut book, Stars, Staterooms and Stowaways last year. Long-time Cruise Director Gary Glading created a real phenomenon with his debut book, Stars, Staterooms and Stowaways last year. Here, he looks back at his career – and the ongoing success of the book

1985. For some of you, that will seem like yesterday, yet for others, it is literally a whole lifetime ago. For me, it was when I started to work on cruise ships. Whatever your perception of that date is, there is no escaping the fact it was 26 years ago. Portable phones, personal computers and DVDs were things of the future yet, somehow, we all managed to live quite well and happily without them.

In the world of cruising, those 26 years have seen unprecedented technological advances across the board. The “big” ships of the 1980s which carried just over 1,000 passengers have been dwarfed by today’s floating giants transporting up to 6,000 guests.

The main lounges, which once served as multi-purpose showrooms, ballrooms and game venues, have been replaced by multi-deck theatres whose sophisticated equipment and production shows can rival the best that Broadway or the West End can offer, and the well-heeled cruisers of the past have had to make room for the more democratic wave that has permitted the cruise industry to attract ever-increasing numbers of travellers from around the globe.

Being involved in such a fascinating business all these years has given me the opportunity to meet and interview some of the best-known names in the worlds of show business, sports and politics, as well as getting to meet and entertain countless numbers of passengers from all over the world.

I have been taken hostage at knife-point by a group of mutinying passengers, stranded on a tropical island in the South Pacific and am most grateful to have survived a major hurricane at sea.

I have also blushed at dirty jokes told by a multi-lingual pensioner in a passenger talent show, awarded first prize to a topless Austrian grandmother for her team spirit and snuck a blind kitten up the gangway and into the comfort and safety of my quarters. It matters little from which country one comes or even from which social stratum because, whatever language we speak, whichever passport we carry or however much we have in our bank accounts, we are all members of the human race and that entitles us to all of the quirks, eccentricities, habits and flaws our species seems to breed with surprising regularity.

I don’t know if it’s the salt air, the gentle rolling of the waves or the holiday atmosphere on board but, somehow, cruising seems to encourage or accentuate those things which make us all individuals.

If you take the celebrities I have met at sea, the entertaining behaviour some of my passengers have displayed and throw in a few tales about the abandoned or needy animals I have fed, medicated or smuggled back on board over the years, the result would be a book entitled ‘Stars, Staterooms & Stowaways: anecdotes from a colourful career in cruising.’

My book was first published on March 31, 2010, in the UK and all its royalties go to the Hanalei Animal Sanctuary ONLUS, a charity I run in the north of Italy for abandoned and abused animals of all sizes, shapes and origins (www.hanalei-animal-sanctuary-onlus.com).

Happily, in April of 2010, the book was awarded the People’s Book Prize for non-fiction, and, that same month, Britain’s Sky Television interviewed me about it on their highly popular Travel Show. Due to the continuing interest in my book, the BBC interviewed me in February of this year.

I am delighted to report it has been a best-seller on Norwegian Cruise Lines, Cunard and P&O Cruises. West End musical star Marti Webb, who wrote the book’s foreword, called this collection of cruise anecdotes “sometimes touching, often very funny, but always highly entertaining.” Although I have an understandable quantity of nostalgia for the “old days,” I still relish every opportunity to embrace the new ideas and challenges today’s world of cruising presents.

Over the years, I have performed as one half of the successful international singing and dancing duo “Glading and Allan;” I have played classical piano recitals before some of the best-known stars and aristocrats of their time; I have served as Head of Entertainment and production show producer for some of the largest cruise lines around today, but it is as Cruise Director that I have spent the most enjoyable and satisfying years of my career in cruising.

I also look forward to my next assignment on NCL’s Norwegian Jade this summer as we will be sailing out of Venice, Italy, one of the most glorious ports of the planets.

I am proud to have been so intricately involved in such an exciting business all these years, but I am also passionate about its future and am delighted to think that I’ll continue to be intimately involved in it for many years to come. Why don’t you join me?

Stars, Staterooms & Stowaways is published by Discovery Books (£10/€12) and is available from Amazon.

By sea life I meant cruise ships. Bernie was an ED for Princess before covid. She had been with Princess for many years.

For the Majestic Princess as of 12/22/21, Kevin Tugwell is still the CD and Bernie Fuentes is the ED.

She is currently the Entertainment Director on the Majestic Princess.

I was just on the Majestic with Kevin Tugwell.  He will be going home for a few months at the end of Jan.--Natalie Costa will be CD while he is gone--then I am sure he is returning to the Majestic.  Kevin is great and works well with his crew--hoping to cruise with him again.

I can definitely attest to the fact that they attend our gatherings.    Someone just needs to volunteer to set everything up and that does take a little work.  At our recent meets/greets on the Majestic, many officers were present and were introduced by the CD including the Captain who really praised our CC members and our support of the cruise industry.

Big Al--just be sure to send invitations to each officer and don't just assume they know they should be there.

Will do..although my M & G on the NCL Encore next week is still on, I received an e-mail stating that NO officers will attend due to the recent spike in COVID..many M & G's have been cancelled on many ships..hope for the best!!
