Why Cruise Indonesia?

Regally draped across the Equator like an ermine mantle, Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelago, a majestic sprawl of some 17,500 paradisiacal islands home to all manner of endemic wildlife and natural wonders. Dramatic volcanic landscapes submerge into sapphire blue surf, crystalline seas home to graceful whale sharks and nomadic sea-gypsies, filled with vibrant coral reefs fostering marine habitats of untold biodiversity. This alluring archipelago, once the inspiration for Wallace’s theory of natural selection, is now a sublime playground for Indonesia cruise trips and increasingly popular private yacht charters .

Set sail on one of our luxury small ship cruises in Indonesia , from traditional Pinisi schooners to superior scuba diving liveaboards and even oceangoing super-yachts, and visit some of the planet’s most pristine, remote and beautiful areas. Visit breathtaking Bali and the pink sands of the Komodo National Park – the habitat of the legendary Komodo Dragon – or follow the historic trade winds en route to the famous Spice Islands . Discover the glittering jewels of the ‘ Coral Triangle ‘ – the islands of Wayag in Raja Ampat and resplendent birds-of-paradise of West Papua – or venture deep into the jungle-fringed rivers of Indonesian Borneo to glimpse orangutans in the wild aboard a traditional Kalimantan riverboat.

Our hand-picked portfolio of Indonesian boats has been carefully chosen to include remarkable expedition vessels operated by only the most trusted of partners, preeminent pioneers in the region who offer exceptional itineraries, unrivaled knowledge and utmost levels of service.

Benoa cruise port

Region Australia - New Zealand - Pacific Ocean Islands

Local Time 2024-04-10 02:25

Port Benoa cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Benoa, Bali Indonesia. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Tanjung Benoa cruise port is the main port on Bali Island, Indonesia. It is located close to popular places like Nusa Dua, Sanur, Kuta, Denpasar.

Denpasar airport is only 12 km (7,5 mi) away from the cruise port and there are a lot of good hotels in the area. Bali is a great resort vacation destination with a huge variety of city tours and shore excursions. The cruise ship schedule offers attractive voyages. The most attractive cruises in the itinerary are during the Nyepi Day (the Silent Day corresponding to the New Year in Bali) in March.

In 2017 started construction works of Port Benoa's new cruise terminal (read more in the "terminal" section below). The decision for the port development project was based on the booming East Asia-Australia travel market, with over 3 million cruise ship tourists booked in 2017. Of those, due to lack of modern and big-capacity facilities, Indonesia received only ~200,000 foreign tourists.

With the new Benoa Cruise Terminal, Indonesia hopes to increase its cruise ship tourism capacity up to 0,5 million passengers by the year 2019. Apart from Port Benoa, Indonesia also started developing the Makassar ports Belawan , Tanjung Priok, Tanjung Perak, and Soekarno-Hatta.

In December 2017, Genting's new luxury brand Dream Cruises added the Indonesian ports Surabaya (Java) and Celukan Bawang (Bali) to the Genting Dream ship's regularly scheduled 7-night roundtrip Singapore itinerary program.

In March 2018, the state-owned port operator company Pelindo 3 contracted the Holland-based company Van Oord (specializing in dredging, marine engineering, offshore projects) to carry out dredging works in Port Benoa. By deepening the port's access channel and turning basin, port access will be improved, allowing bigger vessels to enter and berth safely. For the dredging works, Van Oord deployed a large cutter suction dredger (equipped with a rotating cutter head) to dredge a total of 5 million m3 of seabed material.

Benoa cruise terminal

Benoa Cruise Terminal (BCT) hosts passenger ships of all sizes. There is a good anchor holding in the sea bed. Among the cruise lines with ships docking at the main cruise ship terminal are Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Princess, P&O Australia, Cunard, Costa. Legend of the Seas (Marella Discovery 2) was the first large vessel to dock at BCT.

  • Tanjung Benoa port is accessed by 2-miles long channel and has two berths.
  • The East Berth is the main one. In front of it, there is a modern cruise terminal building with a lot of facilities. Its length is 290 m the depth is -11 m 00 LWS.
  • Tanah Ampo International Port (just like Benoa Port) is located in the Bali Island's southern part. Another port is called Celukan Bawang Port - in the island's northern part.

The South Berth is an alternative one. It has a -7 m 00 LWS depth and it is 206 m long. At the Bali Cruise Port Terminal, the passengers can sense the authentic atmosphere because of the Balinese culture and art demonstrations. There are sculptures, paintings, batik paintings, and woodcarvings.

As a part of the Master Plan, the Bali Cruise Terminal is constantly upgraded.

(new) Benoa-Bali Cruise Ship Terminal

On August 1, 2017, Benoa Port Authority announced plans for building a new cruise terminal facility. Construction works started in September 2017, with scheduled completion in December 2018. The project was assigned to the state-owned port management company PT Pelabuhan Indonesia III (aka Pelindo 3) specializing in port terminal operator services.

The new cruise port terminal has the capacity to handle even the world's largest passenger vessels (with capacity up to 5000 passengers plus 1500 crew). Apart from the new passenger terminal, there are plans for the development of Celukan Bawang Port (northern Bali). This project was scheduled for the period of December 2017 - March 2018. After its completion, the cruise port's capacity was increased to 7 cruise liners berthing simultaneously, each ship with capacity up to 1000 passengers. Celukan Bawang Port provides easy access for tourists-serving vehicles.

At the new Benoa-Bali terminal, cruise vessel docking fees were reduced by 50%. The Benoa Master Plan (port development project) also included dredging to max draft 12 m (40 ft) and enlarging the berth to 200 m (656 ft).

Bali is a large island and a famous Indonesian resort. This place is amazing with its sunny beaches, beautiful tropical forests, and volcanic mountains. It offers terraced rice fields and thousands of great temples. The Bali Cruise Terminal is located close to famous attractions and places for fun activities like water sport or haggling for bargains. Bali has survived two bombing accidents and has revived in an amazing place for a great vacation. The tour operators offer interesting activities like surfing, playing golf, workshops attending and watching Balinese dance performances in the evenings. Also, you can visit interesting places like:

  • Kuta Beach: Bali’s most developed and most popular beach. You can see a memorial to the 2002 bombing victims. There are a lot of surf shops, cafes (including Hard Rock Cafe) and several not so big shopping malls.
  • Ubud: Bali’s cultural center. Take a tour at museums and temples, you can also visit a monkey sanctuary.
  • Sanur: resort town near the beach.
  • Denpasar: Bali’s capital, the biggest city on the island. Good for shopping and temples’ tour.
  • Nusa Dua (Tanjung Benoa): resort area with a public beach located at Geger. The area is across the harbor from Bali Cruise Port.
  • Seminyak: located north from Kuta, a high-class resort with SPA and boutiques.

Traditional Seafood Satay and Rice in Bali, Indonesia

Local Cuisine

Hindu Bali is notable as the only island of an otherwise Muslim Indonesia. That means that pork is served, and Babi Guling — whole roasted pig, Balinese-style — is the traditional preparation. But other great eats aren't far away, either. Try satay, grilled meat skewered and served with an accompanying sauce: Seafood versions like prawns are popular here. Vegetarians can enjoy tofu dishes or sayur mesanten , veggies braised in coconut milk.

Small Ship Cruises in Indonesia

Explore the Indonesian archipelago's tropical islands, with friendly locals and untouched by mass tourism.

Indonesian cruises will take visitors through one of the most beautiful yet comparatively unexplored countries in the world. Though Bali has a well-developed resort culture, the rest of the country is largely untouched by tourism and ripe for explorations and discovery. With over 13,000 islands, Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelagic country and best explored aboard a small boat cruise. A cruise of the Indonesian islands takes visitors from the beaches of Bali and Sasak villages of Lombok, to the dragons of Komodo and the stone spires of Raja Ampat, not to mention the volcano-studded Spice Islands and the remote isles of Southeast Sulawesi.

A luxury small ship cruise in Indonesia will take visitors to some of the archipelago’s best and most beautiful islands. Sailing through the Indonesian islands on a traditional Indonesian phinisi ship will give visitors the opportunity to indulge in some of the best snorkelling in the world, to explore remote islands and hike through jungles to spectacular waterfalls and a chance to interact with locals. Meanwhile, for the more adventurous traveller, thrill at the chance to explore sea-flooded caves and visit the islands Rinca, Komodo or Padar to encounter the famous Komodo dragons.

Bali is arguably Indonesia’s best known island and the starting point for many Indonesia cruises. Small boat cruises typically focus on the outlying, less-visited Nusa Penida islands of Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Penida itself. Here, visitors find the Bali they dreamt of, studded with secluded beaches and karst caves. From the uninhabited island of Pulau Menjangan, visitors can snorkel with clownfish and angelfish.

Lombok is considered one of Indonesia’s best islands, given its gorgeous beaches, mighty waterfalls and the unique culture of the Sasak people. Visitors to Lombok will hike through the jungle to the spectacular Sindang Gila, a 40-foot tiered waterfall, before visiting the village of Senaru to delve into the Sasak people’s unique blend of ancient Animism and Islam. Much of Lombok’s beauty, however, is found off the main island and under the waters surrounding the nearby Gili Islands, including beautiful Gili Sulat, site of some of the best snorkelling in the region.

Komodo is famous for its Komodo dragons, but this driest of the Indonesian islands has so much more to offer than its monsters! Arid and hot, Komodo island and its sisters, Rinca and Padar, are rife with wildlife, from large mammals such as deer, buffalo and wild pigs, to sulfur-crested cockatoos, jungle chickens, and the white-breasted sea eagle, while sharks and sea turtles cruise undersea. But, let’s be honest, most visitors come for the Komodo dragons , the largest lizards in the world. Komodo National Park, which encompasses all three main islands, is home to over 3000 dragons, giving travellers plenty of opportunities to spot one of these near-mythical beasts—from a distance, of course . . .

Raja Ampat is a series of hundreds of islands, with most Indonesian sailing cruises visiting the islands of Misool, Batanata and Waigeo. Visitors will drift through the mushroom-shaped karst spires of Misool in search for cave paintings and undersea graveyards, hike through the mangrove forests of Batanata to splendid waterfalls, and visit traditional fishing villages on Waigeo. Meanwhile, animal lovers can scan the canopy for birds of paradise and snorkel the crystal waters in search of sharks, manta rays and seahorses.

The Spice Islands , also known as the Moluccas or Maluku Islands, played an important role in the spice trade. For over a thousand years, the islands have been the source of spices such as cloves and nutmeg, which were then valued nearly as highly as gold. Indonesian cruises to the islands include a deep dive into the history of the islands, the spice trade and the opportunity to visit the nutmeg plantations still in use today. In addition, the Moluccas feature spectacular palm-lined beaches and towering volcanoes, including the still active Gunung Api.

Southeast Sulawesi is especially untrammelled by tourists and Indonesian cruise itineraries including this region are often new, giving travellers an opportunity to feel like real explorers and pioneers. Sulawesi cruises travel across the Flores Sea, stopping along the way to explore the area’s many islands and atolls while watching for manta rays and whale sharks. In the area of Botubarani, visitors may get the chance to swim with these gentle giants. Village visits will allow visitors to engage with the locals and experience the unique cultures of this remote land.

Kalimantan , also known as Central Borneo, has been called Southeast Asia’s Amazon, due to its thick jungle, meandering rivers and varied wildlife. Among its many animal species, though, Kalimantan’s most famous resident is without question the orangutan. Certain Indonesia cruises will include an initial stop and river cruise through parts of Kalimantan, allowing visitors the opportunity to experience a true jungle adventure, complete with face-to-face encounters with the red-pelted orangutans.

Best time to cruise Indonesia

Indonesia is a large country, stretching across the equator from Southeast Asia into Oceania. Given this, it experiences a varied climate which will differ from region to region and even island to island. It is essential to plan ahead as the best time to visit Indonesia will depend on your chosen small boat cruise itinerary and the islands included.

October to April in Indonesia is the wet season in Bali and Lombok, with higher humidity and more frequent rains. This period, however, is the dry season in the Spice Islands and Papua.

May to September in Indonesia are the dry season throughout the islands, except in the Spice Islands and Papua, where it will be rainier and more humid.

Note that July and August are the peak season in Indonesia, with far more tourists and higher prices.

It should also be noted that June and July in the Indonesian region of Raja Ampat is unofficially considered windy season, when the waters may be choppier and small boat cruises slightly less comfortable.

How to get to Indonesia?

Flights to Indonesia will typically be to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, in Jakarta, on the island of Java, or to Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport, also known as Denpasar International Airport. From either international airport, visitors can fly to their Indonesian cruise departure point. Note that direct flights to Indonesia are rare from Europe or North America. Many cruise departure points will require a connecting flight within Indonesia.

Where do Indonesia cruises depart from?

Indonesia luxury cruises typically depart from Sorong, on West Papua, from Ternate, in the Spice Islands, from Labuan Bajo, on Flores, from the island of Bali, or from Gorantolo, on North Sulawesi.

If your cruise departs from Bali , you will fly into Ngurah Rai International Airport, also known as Denpasar International Airport, and make your way to Sanur, a popular meeting point for Indonesia cruise operators on Bali. From Sanur, a shuttle will take you to Padang Bai (also called Padangbai and Padang Bay) or Amed, approximately two hours from Sanur. This is a common departure point for cruises that include the Lesser Sunda Islands, such as Bali and Lombok.

If your chosen cruise leaves from Labuan Bajo , on Flores, you will fly into Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport, also known as Denpasar International Airport, and fly to Flores, with a possible connecting flight in Makassar, on South Sulawesi. This is a common departure point for cruises of Komodo and the islands of Nusa Tenggara

If your cruise leaves from Sorong , on West Papua, you will fly to Jakarta or Bali and, from there, fly to Sorong, with a possible connecting flight in Makassar.

If your cruise leaves from Ternate , you will fly into Jakarta or Bali and, from there, fly to Ternate, with a possible connecting flight in Makassar. This is a common departure point for cruises of the Spice Islands.

If your cruise departs from Gorantolo , you will fly into Bali and, from there, fly to Gorantolo, with a connecting flight in Makassar. This departure point is for Sulawesi cruises only.

If your cruise includes Kalimantan , you will fly into Jakarta or Bali and, from there, fly to the town of Palangkaraya, on Kalimantan. After the Central Borneo portion of your trip, you will return to Jakarta or Bali to continue your small boat cruise.

Indonesia Cruise Tips

  • Indonesia cruises offer a variety of experiences and activities so plan ahead when deciding on an itinerary.
  • If your arrival includes a connecting flight within Indonesia (in Makassar, for example), it is recommended to arrive at least a day before your Indonesian cruise departure date.
  • Indonesia luxury cruises offer ample opportunities for snorkelling so you may wish to bring your own gear.
  • Much of Indonesia’s beauty is found underwater, so a waterproof camera is recommended.
  • Though each island and region has a dry and wet season, note that a tropical climate means it could rain at any time, so pack accordingly.
  • Sunscreen and plenty of water are a must when visiting Komodo’s arid interior.
  • Note that passports must be valid for six months to be allowed into the country.
  • If you are asked to fill out a disembarkation card, you will need to keep your half so as to hand it back upon leaving the country.
  • The 30-day visa is the most common and will likely accommodate any Indonesian cruise itinerary. Visas can be applied for in advance, which is recommended, or upon arrival. Visas on arrival cost $35 US dollars and the exact amount, in US currency, is required.

Raja Ampat Luxury Cruise

Raja Ampat Cruise

Sailing towards the edge of the pacific ocean, our 7-night raja ampat cruise is a visual spectacle with unmatched marine diversity on show at the best dive and snorkel sites on earth.

Onboard the Aqua Blu: Raja Ampat

Known for its unique topography, Raja Ampat captivates with the enigmatic beauty of its limestone karst island clusters. The archipelago – made up of over 1,500 islands – bewilders and enthralls explorers with dramatic landscapes that shelter secret lagoons, bays, beaches, and the magical blue river of Kali Biru. Surrounding these forested islands are some of the most biodiverse marine environments on the planet. Raja Ampat is known to harbor one of the richest coral reef ecosystems as well as a wide array of marine life, with new species being identified constantly. Every day spent in this East Indonesian paradise is an opportunity for new discoveries and unforgettable memories.

On Aqua Blu, discover our Raja Ampat luxury cruise with world-class wildlife excursions on both land and sea. It is here that famous 19th-century naturalist, Alfred Russell Wallace, stumbled upon the birds of paradise that can’t be found anywhere else on Earth. These winged wonders live alongside 350 other bird species, including forest kingfishers and king parrots. Opposite the canopies and the sky, Raja Ampat’s waters are often dubbed the “Amazon of the seas”. While exploring this tropical paradise, divers and snorkelers alike can spot incredible creatures such as black tip reef sharks, manta rays, and pygmy seahorses.

Raja Ampat’s many beaches are often the nesting ground for turtle species including the Pacific leatherback, the largest of all living turtle species on Earth. Meanwhile, you can find the world’s most extensive network of mangrove forests here that support populations of dugong and juvenile fish. Explore this designated Marine Protected Area (MPA) on Aqua Blu’s Raja Ampat cruise. Early Bird Bonus Enjoy 20% off when you book to travel across all departure dates in 2024, 2025 and 2026. Raja Ampat: Home to the world’s most diverse underwater habitats

cruise ship from indonesia

Onboard our Raja Ampat luxury cruise, sail across mesmerizing turquoise and blue waters which constantly jostle for your attention and beckon you to dive down and under. Located in the heart of the Coral Triangle, the 20,000 square mile region is home to every kind of underwater habitat imaginable; pristine reef flats, secret bays, swift channels, deep drop-offs, shallow seamounts, mangroves, marine lakes, and protected coral gardens.   Raja Ampat is a thriving subterranean metropolis that houses more than 1,300 species of tropical marine fish (about 50% of all known species) and more than 600 species of coral (nearly 75% of all known species of reef-building corals). This is in addition to manta rays, rare sea turtle species and schooling hammerheads. Cape Kri in the Dampier Strait notably holds the world record for the most number of species counted in a single dive (374 in total).

Raja Ampat: Witness the cradle of life between two major oceans

cruise ship from indonesia

However, Raja Ampat’s underwater splendor isn’t defined by sheer numbers alone. Our Raja Ampat luxury cruise route also happens to be in the middle of a major cetacean migration route and aggregation site where various whales and dolphin species have been sighted.   Of great significance is also the fact that the region is the meeting point of the Indian and the Pacific Ocean called the Indonesian Throughflow. There’s a six-inch (15cm) average height difference between these two oceans, creating an immense exchange of water carrying millions of aquatic eggs and larvae that either spawn to life or serve as a vital source of food for other marine animals.   At the same time, the cooler water from deep-sea trenches and basins plays a part in Raja Ampat’s stunning biodiversity. These environments offer shelter from the glacial water of the ice ages, and today offer natural protection against rising sea temperatures that have resulted in the bleaching of other relatively unprotected coral habitats including the Great Barrier Reef and the Maldives. Endowed with natural geological defenses, Raja Ampat is truly Mother Nature’s last frontier.   Aqua Expeditions’ Raja Ampat cruise aboard Aqua Blu sails every year from December through to February. The cruise sets sail on 7-night itineraries, departing from the city of Sorong.   Come sail with us on Aqua Blu and experience one of the world’s most rewarding marine expeditions.

With over 17,000 islands that cover nearly 750,000 square miles of land and sea, Indonesia is  one of the largest countries in the world. It’s also one of the most ancient and culturally rich places on earth, with a deep history of spice trading, European influence, and intertwining religious backgrounds.

On Indonesia cruises, you’ll uncover this country’s wild, elemental natural beauty, from volcanoes and jungles in Celukan Bawang to secluded surf spots in Lombok. Get your adrenaline going on a jet ski tour around the beaches of Benoa, or try fresh vegetable curries as you sip on cool coconut milk after a yoga class in Ubud. You’ll experience the best of Bali, Lombok, and their surrounding islands on a luxury cruise to Indonesia with Celebrity.

Indonesia Cruise Highlights

Blissful bali.

Cruises to Indonesia will bring you to the world-famous island of Bali, where a boho vibe, exciting cuisine, and unspoiled beaches await. Bask in the sun on the bright white sands of Gunung Payung Beach, or head to artsy Ubud for an afternoon of yoga or a traditional dance class to rejuvenate your spirits. Relax with a fresh acai bowl or tropical blended cocktail as you overlook the palm-fringed sands of Nusa Dua and soak in this magical island’s blissful energy before heading back to the ship.

Endless Natural Beauty

Indonesia is full of natural beauty, unique biospheres, and some of the most sought-after beaches on earth. On cruises to Indonesia you’ll have the opportunity to trek to volcanic crater lakes, ride scenic boats through mangroves, surf and snorkel at tucked away jungle beaches, and much more. From casual birdwatching to adrenaline-boosting ATV safari tours, you’ll find endless opportunities to explore the natural world on a cruise to Indonesia.

Cross-Cultural Experiences

Indonesia is a country of contrasts in every way, and one of the biggest highlights of visiting is experiencing an array of harmonious, intertwining local cultures. Indonesia Cruise Ports

Celukan bawang.

Celukan Bawang lies on the northern coast of Bali, fringed by dense tropical jungles to the south and the beautiful Bali sea to the north. Here you’ll enjoy the quieter, less developed side of the island. Visit Segara Karang Rata, a coastal wildlife preserve that hugs the sea, or Lovina Beach, where you may spot dolphins. Journey out to a tropical plantation to try the famous Kopi Luwak, an unusual and prized coffee. Step into the Brahmavihara-Arama Buddhist Temple, Bali’s largest Buddhist monastery, and join a meditation class.

Lombok is the perfect compliment to Bali, just across a narrow strait but different in both culture and faith. While in Lombok, explore the village of Kuta, where you’ll find small restaurants with fantastic local seafood curries, an uncrowded beach, and nearby nature escapes that are easy to access by taxi or tuk-tuk. Thrill-seekers can trek on the slopes of the towering volcano, Mount Rinjani, or for a more relaxed experience, you could take a guided jeep tour around the blue-green caldera lake, Segara Anak.

The port of Benoa is the main southern gateway to Bali for cruise ships, and a short distance from the island’s principal city, Denpasar. Take a day trip to artsy Ubud for colorful café scenes, yoga, artisan gift shopping, and a deliciously healthy acai bowl to feed the soul. Enjoy thrilling water sports like kitesurfing, wakeboarding, and jet skiing on Tanjung Benoa Beach. Visit the Pura Dalem Ning Lan Taman Beji temple site to reflect on the island’s intricate and harmonic blend of both Buddhist and Hindu traditions, where three majestic gates made of white-hued sandstone greet worshippers and visitors.

THE CRUISE FOR THE CURIOUS

Indonesia has seen a positive growth of foreign tourist visit to Indonesia from year to year. Over the last three years, Indonesia has achieved its annual target for 2015, 2016 and 2017, comprising 10 million, 12 million and 15 million respectively.    While in 2018 and 2019, the government has set a target of 17 million and 20 million foreign tourist visits respectively.

One of the contributing factors to this growth is the increased cruise ships visits and traffics. Indonesia has been one of the favorite destinations for cruise ships, with Bali ranks number one on the most popular destinations within the country. Meanwhile, Indonesia ranks 7th on the most visited destinations by cruise ships.  In 2018, it is estimated 465 cruise visit calling Indonesia ports carrying 276,681 passengers. Compared to the previous year, this number has increased by around 31%.

Going forward, Indonesian Government strives to increase more growth on the number of cruise ships visits and traffics, targeting 500,000 passengers in 2019. For this reason, various efforts have been made by the government, in cooperation with those of governments and private sectors. Such efforts include improving port facilities and service, easing and simplifying sailing regulation for cruise ships as well as their crews and passengers. In addition, supports from other related stakeholders such as ground handling agent and travel operators, suppliers/vendors, as well as other partners are of important factors to the growth.

Known for forests, beaches, and volcanoes, the cruse port of Bali, Indonesia is a tourist favorite. This particular port is close to , so travelers have multiple choices when it comes to sightseeing and activities.

  • LAWS & REGULATIONS

In a bid to boosting cruise visits to Indonesia, the government has introduced a number of new regulations which simplify the process for the cruise ship to enter Indonesian waters and to dock in the country's ports.

One of the most signification regulations issued by the government is the cabotage regulation that permits foreign passenger ships to take visitors on journey within the country, stopping at major domestic ports, as part of effort to boost tourism.

Through a regulation No 121 of 2015, the Ministry of Transportation has designated (5) five Indonesian harbours, to be operational as transit port with turnaround capacity for foreign flag cruise vessels.

  • Port Belawan, Medan,
  • Port Tanjung Priok, Jakarta,
  • Port Tanjung Perak, Surabaya,
  • Port Soekarno – Hatta, Makassar
  • Port Benoa, Bali

This regulation permits foreign passenger ships to take visitors on journeys within the country, stopping at major domestic ports, as part of an effort to boost tourism. The regulation does require that stops at domestic ports by foreign cruise ships be part of longer trips that both begin and end outside of Indonesia’s territorial waters. It was also announced that at the major ports, ships carrying passengers would be given priority over those with cargo in being assigned berths

By general definition a turnaround port is a Port from which a cruise ship loads passengers and begins its itinerary, and to which it returns to disembark passengers upon conclusion of voyage. The turnaround operation in which a cruise ship itinerary starts and finishes, involving the full disembark of all previous cruise guests and embarking of new cruise guests, as well as changing of crew. For new cruise guests or crew, this can include transport from different locations to the port, such as airports, meet and greet service. It is also where the cruise ship's supplies are loaded for the cruise, which includes everything from fresh water to fuel and other supplies needed for the cruise.

In the past tourist travelling on a cruise to Indonesia must start & end their journey either from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong or Australia. Tourist information centre

Usually the locals set up a simple information centre where you can exchange your currency into Indonesian Rupiah and arrange a taxi service.

Local currency

Although taxis generally take US dollars your local attractions or restaurant might not. Depending on what your day ashore looks like we would recommend to change into the local currency.

There will be airconditioned non-official taxis waiting for you on the pier. You can arrange them through the tourist information center on the pier. Please know there are also other taxis waiting for you outside the pier gates, which are usually cheaper than the ones waiting for you on the dock. We advice a taxi for the day should cost no more than 80 US dollars per taxi. Negotiate before stepping into the taxi.

Renting a scooter

Usually locals, who hang around at the exit of the port, will be there to offer you their scooter for the day. This is a nice way to get around, although you need to be a very skilled and experienced driver to take on the hectic Lombok traffic. We would also like to emphasise that you are not insured for anything should something happen. Please take this risk into account when making the decision to make a personal deal with the local.

There are no beaches within walking distance of the port. The closest beach would be around 20 minutes drive to the north. Negotiate a price with the taxi driver for a round trip to the beach. Generally the beaches on the west side are not as good as the beaches in the south although the southern beaches take longer to get to. Kuta beach (Novotel Hotel) is one of the best beaches to go to. Keep in mind it is over an hour drive / 50 km drive.

Be transported back in time on this 12-day Indonesian cruise as the 24-guest Ombak Putih or 12-guest Katharina sailing vessel winds her way among remote palm-fringed coral islands, majestic rainforests and huge smoking conical volcanoes. The Moluccas are the original Spice Islands of Indonesia: a magical destination, beautiful, remote and unspoiled, with a long, fascinating and turbulent history. For millennia these fertile volcanic isles were the world’s only source of the holy trinity of rare spices: cloves, nutmeg and mace, which were once worth their weight in gold. Sail Indonesia and relish the opportunity to swim, snorkel, kayak and stand-up paddleboard in waters rich in marine life.

On the main itinerary, navigate the Banda Islands and much of the famed region as you sail northbound from Ambon to Ternate. Go in search of famed naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace and his living treasures, taking in firsthand experiences of unique ecology and visiting some of the places that most fascinated Wallace: Ambon, the former capital of the Moluccas; Bacan, where Wallace made some of his greatest zoological discoveries (birds of paradise, the world’s largest bee); Ternate, Wallace’s base for his eastern travels and once the center of the world clove trade; and the mysterious island of Halmahera where Wallace discovered evolution by natural selection.

On select alternative itineraries between Ternate or Ambon and Sorong, also visit the remote Raja Ampat Islands with their pristine, incredibly diverse coral reefs and up to five species of birds of paradise. Many of these sailings feature special guest hosts who are experts in endangered species and evolutionary biology. Or opt for an East Indies Spice Exploration route cruises from Flores or Komodo to Ambon, exploring more of the Lesser Sundas than other Spice Islands cruise routes. Each itinerary offers a unique slice of history, along with incredible snorkeling, kayaking and trekking.

Passage is aboard the 24-guest sailing vessel Ombak Putih or 12-passenger ketch Katharina . These traditional pinisi-style ships offer romance, Indonesian culture, rustic charm and superior service, and are therefore also AdventureSmith favorites for private  charter cruises . Complimentary onboard snorkeling equipment, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, fishing gear and tender boats equip guests with daily adventures among a string of Indonesian islands.

The Scents of the Spice Islands Itinerary

The main 12-day Scents of the Spice Islands itinerary begins in Ambon and explores the Banda Islands before heading north to Halmahera and Ternate. Focus fully on the Spice Islands, with historic stops yet plenty of hiking, snorkeling and sailing aboard the 24-guest Ombak Putih sailing vessel.

A map showing a Spice Islands cruise route from Ambon to Ternate with a yellow line marking the route

Upon your arrival at the airport, a provided transfer will take you to the Ombak Putih at her mooring in the harbor. After you have settled in, take an (optional) short tour of the island.

Ambon town is one of the oldest European outposts in the region and in Wallace’s time it was the capital of the Moluccas. Wallace collected some stunning species on the island and said that it “…always remain as a bright spot in the review of my Eastern travels, since it was there that I first made the acquaintance of those glorious birds and insects, which render the Moluccas classic ground in the eyes of the naturalist, and characterise its fauna as one of the most remarkable and beautiful upon the globe.”

Visit the market and see a traditional Balieo house. See the ancient Waipauwe Mosque (1414), the Immanuel Church (1512) and finally Fort Amsterdam (1514), one of the first European forts built in the Moluccas. Rumphius, an important German botanist, lived in the fort from 1660 to 1670 and see copies of some of his psychedelic paintings of local brightly colored fish.

After this return to the boat for lunch before heading to the Banda Islands.

Ombak Putih

lunch, dinner

Today reach the remote and legendary Banda Islands. Famous for their natural beauty and cultural heritage, and the well-preserved remnants of an extraordinary history of imperialist rivalry, these islands are quite simply one of Indonesia’s highlights. Banda was originally the world’s only source of nutmeg and mace, valued for their rarity and high cost by aristocrats and elites.

This is a very special destination. Since conditions of wind and tide will determine the order in which the ship can visit various Banda islands, the activities here can’t be assigned to a particular day. But you can look forward to a few highlights detailed here.

In the capital Bandaneira, on the biggest island, Neira, land near the elegant arches of Hotel Maulana – a little slice of Somerset Maugham. It’s a pleasant stroll through the quaint colonial outpost’s characterful streets, inspecting notable residences, a museum, churches and a waterfront market. Brooding over all is the mediaeval-looking Fort Belgica, its five crumbling bastions now solidly rebuilt. The population is a handsome mix of Malay, Arab, Dutch and Melanesian. Just across the harbor is Banda’s perfect, jungle-clad volcanic cone Gunung Api (‘Fire Mountain’ – 640 metres). The fit and ambitious might make an early morning ascent up a challenging track to the top for stunning views.

There are some excellent coral reefs nearby to see some amazing marine life while snorkeling. Ironically, in the less-than-pristine waters of the harbor, there’s a good chance of seeing (at dusk) arguably the world’s most stunning fish, the small but jewel-like Mandarin Fish.

breakfast, lunch, dinner

Over the next two days, visit some of the other small islands of the Banda archipelago – Lonthoir, Ai, Run, Hatta – each of them with its own remnants of old plantations, Dutch cemeteries and fortifications.

The tiny outlying island of Run was the subject of an unbelievable real estate deal when in 1667, under the Treaty of Breda, it was ceded by the English to the Dutch in exchange for Manhattan. Yes, The Manhattan where New York stands. On the island of Ai, visit Fort Revenge, built by the English before being captured by the Dutch. And on Lonthor enjoy the tranquil beauty of nutmeg groves, where the shapely fruit-bearing trees grow in the shelter of towering, gigantic kenari or native almond trees. With any luck spot the Elegant Imperial Pigeon, a species Wallace discovered and named, which can swallow nutmegs whole.

Observe the age-old technique of harvesting spices by hand, and taste (and buy) baked goods, condiments and jams flavored with fresh mace and nutmeg. The fruit enclosing the nutmeg seed is sold dried and has a unique and intense flavor. It is a delicacy rarely obtainable outside the Banda Islands.

Another stop might have you climbing up to fortress Hollandia and meeting the last of the ‘perkeniers’ – the small-holder farmers who managed the plantations for the Dutch, on land parcels known as ‘perken.’ You’ll learn of more recent wars and eruptions that shook these lovely islands, and value even more their current peace and tranquility.

Leaving Banda navigate through the Sonnegat (‘Sun’s gap’) between Neira and Gunung Api, possibly escorted by kora-kora – the big Moluccan galleys used traditionally for ceremony and warfare, propelled by banks of warrior-oarsmen.

On Saparua land beside Dutch Fort Duurstede (1691), stormed in 1817 in a revolt led by Ambonese Kapitan Pattimura, a national hero and martyr. His story is told by vivid museum dioramas. Brightly painted bemo mini-buses will take you to a morning market before a sailing to nearby Nusalaut. Rarely visited by outsiders, this island is home to a Christian community after early missionaries planted their faith here at the same time that Islam was spreading through the archipelago.

Visit the Eben-Haezer church founded in 1719. Nearby is the restored Dutch Fort Beverwyck, built from 1657 in a distinctive architectural style you’ll have not yet encountered this trip. A highlight here is a lunchtime feast of wonderful local dishes – freshly prepared by villager hosts from forest, garden and sea produce. It’s your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to try papeda, the most famous and unusual of the many sago dishes in this region.

Manipa Island is said to have magical powers, because none of the Portuguese, Dutch or WW2-Japanese who occupied the surrounding islands ever landed here. The spell doesn’t apply to Indonesian ships, so land at Uwe township for lessons in village technology. Its gardens produce cashews, while the leaves of forest  Melaleuca cajuputi  are pot-distilled to make a volatile oil called kayu putih or cajeput. It’s famed throughout Indonesia as a universal panacea: cosmetic, antiseptic, insecticide, decongestant, analgesic, expectorant, anti-spasmodic, stimulant and tonic.

Also view production of the traditional Moluccan food staple, sago, a nutritious flour washed from the fibrous trunk of the sago palm. Sago can be baked into easily transportable dry cakes, which Wallace often subsisted on, while the palm also provides building material and thatch. After an afternoon snorkeling, cruise on towards Belang-Belang.

Deserted, white-sand Belang-Belang is a real beachcomber’s paradise, where your guides will launch a full flotilla of watercraft, kayaks and paddleboards. At Obi Latu, mountains clad in forest and clove plantations plunge spectacularly into the sea.

Visit isolated Manatahan, a village of migrant Butungese from Sulawesi hundreds of miles to the west. Migration is not unusual in this island world where people are accustomed to moving by boat, and islands are sparsely populated or uninhabited. In past times the picturesque channels around Obi were dotted with the sails of local spice traders, Portuguese caravels, Spanish galleons, Dutch jachts and English pinnaces. Now encounter friendly fishers and their outrigger dugouts, colorful timber island-trading craft and sometimes little lambo sloops still trading under sail.

By today you will have lost track of time and place, but your crew won’t have. They will have delivered you on schedule to the Patinti Strait and Doworalamo, where we visit a village of the famous sea gypsies, known in Eastern Indonesia as Sama-Bajo. Scattered widely through Southeast Asia, sea gypsies spent their entire lives from birth to death on their small sailboats called lipa-lipa. Now the modern world has pushed them ashore. Landless, their homes are always built on stilts over coral reefs or the tidal margins of remote islands such as this one.

Take opportunities for swimming, snorkeling and beach-combing before the ship continues on its northerly course.

Wake up off the western coast of Bacan, another of Indonesia’s historic spice sultanates. Go ashore to explore the forested slopes where Wallace made some of his greatest zoological discoveries, including the Moluccan Cuscus, the Standardwing Bird of Paradise, the world’s largest bee Megachile pluto, and the huge and magnificent Golden Birdwing Butterfly.

Wallace described the latter species as the “finest butterfly in the world.” When he caught the first male in 1859 he wrote: “When I took it out of my net, and opened its gorgeous wings, I was nearer fainting with delight and excitement than I have ever been in my life; my heart beat violently, and the blood rushed to my head, leaving a headache for the rest of the day.”

Very few Westerners have ever seen this species alive, and no groups of tourists have ever been taken to see it before. Of course there is no guarantee you will see it – but your guide will be employing the one person on Bacan who knows exactly where it can be found.

Keep a close watch for a host of other animals, some of them endemic to these islands, including parrots, cockatoos, lorikeets, hornbills, the elusive cuscus and the endangered black macaque – the only monkey in Maluku. It’s the wrong side of the Wallace Line for monkeys; these ones were introduced hundreds of years ago from North Sulawesi.

Today visit the Guarici Archipelago, a chain of islands with white sandy beaches, vibrant coral reefs and lovely local villages. Spend a full day here snorkeling, swimming and visiting with locals at one of the villages.

The islands are part of a government-controlled conservation area, designed to protect the reefs and the many beautiful marine species that live there.

Wake up just across from Ternate off the coast of Halmahera, with the mighty peaks of Ternate and Tidore as your dawn backdrop, ready to head ashore to the village of Dodinga after breakfast. This is the very place where Alfred Russel Wallace was staying when, in a fit of malarial delirium, he came up with the idea for the mechanism for evolutionary theory. He promptly wrote to Charles Darwin when he recovered and set in motion the formalization of the theory of Evolution by Natural Selection.

Dodinga is a pretty little riverside village with friendly people, colorful houses and the ruins of an old Portuguese fort, and its importance in the history of science cannot be understated. After spending some time with the villagers, sharing some fresh coconuts and enjoying their hospitality, head back to the boat for lunch and then an afternoon of snorkeling and relaxation.

Finally, reach the island of Ternate. This colorful city was the center of the spice trade for several centuries, and the imprint of the Dutch and the Portuguese can still be seen. In fact, its warehouses are still filled with fragrant piles of clove and nutmeg. Nearby is the splendid 17th-century, pagoda-style royal mosque, and the Sultan’s Palace with its rich collection of heirlooms.

There’s a choice of forts to visit from the turbulent colonial era, such as well-restored Fort Tolukko (Portuguese, 1540). Wallace rented a house on Ternate for three years and used it as his base for the exploration of the Moluccas. It was while living here, very soon after returning from Dodinga, that he posted his legendary “Letter from Ternate” containing his independently conceived theory of natural selection to Darwin.

Visit the probable site of his house near Fort Oranje, before going back to the Ombak Putih to say farewell to the Ship’s Naturalist, the captain and the crew. Then take  the tenders ashore and being transferred to the airport for your onward travel.

Route map for small ship cruise Sailing Indonesia: the Spice Islands main and reverse itinerary between Ternate and Sorong with stops at Halmahera, Raja Ampat, Gam and Waigeo.

Arrive by plane to the small island of Ternate, the capital of the North Maluku Province. Be met at the airport and transferred to the ship , moored off Ternate City. Get settled, have a quick safety briefing and enjoy an alfresco lunch while meeting the other passengers and the crew.

In the afternoon venture into the city, which has retained its commercial and political importance as the administrative and trading center  of North Maluku. Of the four historically powerful spice sultanates, Ternate is the only one where the sultanate has survived uninterrupted. V isit Fort  Toluko,  built by the Portuguese and the ‘ Kedaton ‘, the palace of the Sultan, with its rich collection of heirlooms. Also see the impressive Fort Oranje built by the VOC (Dutch East India Company) and the probable site of the house where Wallace was living when he posted his essay on natural selection to Charles Darwin in 1858.  After the tour re-board the boat ready to start the journey.

Ombak Putih or Katharina

Today wake up off the coast of Halmahera, just across from Ternate, with the mighty peaks of Ternate and Tidore as the dawn’s backdrop.   After breakfast, head to the village of Dodinga : the very place where Wallace was living when, in a fit of malarial delirium, he discovered the mechanism which drives evolutionary change — natural selection. Once he had recovered, he promptly wrote a detailed essay explaining his theory, which he posted to Charles Darwin as soon as he returned to his base on Ternate. His essay, which was published together with Darwin’s thoughts on the subject in August 1858, prompted Darwin to publish his book  Origin of Species  in 1859, which explained the theory in greater detail.   Dodinga  is a pretty little riverside village with friendly people,  colorful  houses and the ruins of an old Portuguese fort, and its importance in the history of science cannot be understated.

After spending some time with the villagers, sharing some fresh coconuts and enjoying their hospitality, head back to the boat for lunch and then go off for an afternoon of snorkeling and relaxation. Head south later in the day, ready for the first bird of paradise encounter the following morning.

These protected waters also provide the perfect location for beginner or rusty snorkelers to become familiar with the water and to home their skills for the many days of snorkeling that lie ahead.

Wake up off the western coast of Bacan , another of Indonesia’s historic spice sultanates. Go ashore to explore the forested slopes where Wallace made some of his greatest zoological discoveries, including the moluccan cuscus, the s tandardwing bird of paradise, the world’s largest bee m egachile   pluto , and the huge and magnificent golden birdwing butterfly. When Wallace caught the first golden birdwing butterfly male in 1859 he wrote: “When I took it out of my net, and opened its gorgeous wings, I was nearer fainting with delight and excitement than I have ever been in my life; my heart beat violently, and the blood rushed to my head, leaving a headache for the rest of the day.” Very few Westerners have ever seen this species alive and no groups of tourists have ever been taken to see it before. Of course spotting it is not guaranteed but your guide is the one person on Bacan who knows exactly where the butterfly can be found.

Keep a close watch for these and a host of other animals, some of them endemic to these islands, including parrots, cockatoos, lorikeets, hornbills, the elusive cuscus and the endangered black macaque — the only monkey in Maluku. It’s the wrong side of the Wallace Line for monkeys; these ones were introduced hundreds of years ago from North Sulawesi.

In the morning make landfall at the Pisang Islands. These tiny gems isolated in the vast waters of the Ceram Sea offer a chance to relax and enjoy the sparkling white-sand beaches, clear waters and vibrant reefs before the ship makes her way to the shores of West Misool .

Today hope to see the lesser birds of paradise displaying in the wild, an unforgettable experience for anyone lucky enough to see them. Rise around 4:00am and have a quick breakfast before going ashore at Kapatcol , where local guides will be waiting to take everyone through the forest to hopefully see the birds as they dance around in their ‘lekking’ (courtship display) trees. Enjoy time for a look around the village, possibly including the school, to learn about their way of life. In the mid-afternoon set off to the eastern side of Misool  to  Tomolol  Bay.

This morning wake to see the sun rise over the picturesque chain of islands that makes up the eastern part of the Misool archipelago. The topography is typical of karst dissolution featuring a great number of tiny islets whose bases have been eroded over time by the relentless motion of the tides. After an early breakfast, take tenders into the heart of the bay to see this partially submerged cave where it is possible to swim, snorkel or simply float while gazing up at the cavernous grotto adorned with astonishing stalactites. The more adventurous can swim or paddle through the dark waters to the other mouth of the cave.

Then move on to a mysterious jellyfish lake and swim among the many thousands of stingless animals: undoubtedly one of Raja Ampat’s most memorable activities. After returning to the ship, use the tenders to explore more of this impressive maze of karst islands, both above and below the surface, complete with mysterious skull cairns in sea-cave cemeteries and prehistoric cave paintings estimated to be 3,000-5,000 years old that depict various human figures and huge human palms, fish, plants, tools and vessels.

After days of marine exploration, the jungle-clad island of Batanta offers a change of scenery and a chance to stretch the legs on an adventurous trek into the island’s interior. Anchor at the foot of Arefi Village, nestled on the north coast of the island, to visit the village and the school, and watch the children’s performance.

For those who wish, if the tide permits, take a short walk along the riverbed to the first of two jungle waterfalls complete with a refreshing pool for cooling off. The fit and adventurous may choose to continue the uphill climb along the rocks to where a second, larger cascade awaits. After this, the boat will move to Dayang  Island for another great  snorkeling  opportunity.

Wake up in front of the island of Penemu , a dramatic location with a short hilltop climb to take in the amazing views. After some great  snorkeling on the island’s reefs, set course for the tiny Arborek Island, where the local children will perform their traditional dances. A lso take time to walk around the village and gain a sense of the Asai  culture, which is  still kept very much alive by the villagers living in this isolated place. There’s a chance to see possible manta rays while snorkeling, but no guarantees.

Today presents another opportunity for keen naturalists to rise early and walk into the forest on a pre-dawn quest to spot the remarkable red bird of paradise, one of the species that Wallace was most anxious to collect. With a little luck and the help of knowledgeable guides, see this rare bird’s elaborate courtship display as dawn breaks over the forest canopy.   After returning to the ship, turn attention to the sea as the ship makes her way through the Dampier strait, home of some of Raja Ampat’s premier reefs. If the currents are in favorable , see some of the area’s larger specimens of marine life, which are attracted to the strait’s nutrient-rich waters.

Spend the afternoon in Yenbeser village where Wallace spent some months. If the tides permit, visit a faithful replica of Wallace’s small hut, which was built by the villagers. A lso visit a nearby small island where a local man has set up a coconut crab sanctuary. The island is home to a small number of these monsters ( Birgus   latro ,  the world’s largest terrestrial arthropod), and opportunities exist to get up close and personal with these magnificent yet docile beasts. Another late afternoon snorkel along a reef with some spectacular giant clams (the world’s largest bivalve) will lead into dinner at anchor on board, ready for an early morning venture for the red bird of paradise.

Today, rise at 4:30am, off Saporkren village. Take a dinghy to the village while it’s still dark and follow a local guide on a short drive into the forest on a pre-dawn quest to spot the gorgeous Wilson’s Bird of Paradise. Hope that the efforts of today’s early start will pay off with a rare and privileged sight of the bird’s elaborate courtship dance as the day breaks over the forest canopy.

Back in the village there’s time to meet with the community and perhaps visit the school. Get back on the boat by mid-morning and head to Yenbuba  at  Mansuar  island for some  snorkeling before lunch. This place is known as the “ fish bowl”  because it provides the chance to see different types of fish around the bay. The boat will then move to Mioskon  island for more  snorkeling  and the opportunity to watch a multitude of bats flying overhead just after sunset.  Tonight, enjoy a farewell party.

Today is the end of the adventure, but there is still one last chance for a swim and a snorkel at a small offshore island before cruising into port. Alternatively, explore Doom Island.   Once at anchor, say goodbye to the crew and ship before taking the tenders ashore and being transferred to the airport for your onward travel.

This Spice Islands cruise begins in Ternate, Indonesia (TTE), and ends in Sorong, Indonesia (SOQ) .  We highly recommend arriving one day prior to your trip start date in case of any flight delay, cancellation or lost luggage issues. Westbound Sorong to Ternate Itinerary

Select alternative itineraries sail westbound from Sorong to Ternate include iconic Raja Ampat sites with the Spice Islands—and offer special programming with guest hosts. Follow in Alfred Russel Wallace’s footsteps with endangered species specialists Ray & Angela Hale on these “In the Wake of Wallace” departures aboard 12-guest Katharina.

Arrive by plane into Sorong, the gateway to Raja Ampat. From the airport be transferred to the harbor where the ship will be waiting at anchor. Get settled let the tour leaders explain  the vessel’s facilities and safety procedures. W eigh anchor, leave the  harbor behind and cruise to a small island to enjoy the first snorkel of the trip as the ship makes her way north.

Today rise very early and head off in the tenders to a small village. Follow local guides on a walk into the forest to spot the gorgeous Wilson’s Bird of Paradise.   Back in the village take time to meet with the community and perhaps visit the school. Get back on the boat by mid-morning and if time permits,  travel over to a nearby island to snorkel.   In the afternoon, go snorkeling  on the beautiful reefs that fill this area.

Rise early once more to see the remarkable red bird of paradise, and with a little luck and the help of knowledgeable guides, see this rare bird’s elaborate courtship display as dawn breaks over the forest canopy.   Once we back on the ship, turn attention to the sea as the ship  makes her way through the Dampier Strait, home of some of Raja Ampat’s premier reefs.   There’s a chance to see some manta rays while snorkeling, but there are no guarantees. End the day by mooring off another tiny island, where the local children will perform their traditional dances and there’s time to explore the charming village.

Today is a day of exploration and  snorkeling. Spend the day visiting a local village and snorkeling  on the many great reefs in the area. V isit a replica of Alfred Russel Wallace’s hut and call in on an island where a local man has set up a coconut crab sanctuary for what is the world’s largest terrestrial arthropod. A  late afternoon snorkel along a reef with some spectacular giant clams (the world’s largest marine arthropod and mollusc ) leads into dinner at anchor on board.

Today is another day or  snorkeling , Wallace tracking and exploring some of Raja Ampat’s most beautiful limestone karst islands. W ake up in front of the island of  Penemu , a dramatic location with a short hilltop climb to take in the amazing views, before continuing on island hopping northwards to an island where at dusk, tens of thousands of fruit bats fly out to feed.   Tonight offers a beach barbecue and party on a remote beach.

This morning wake to see the sun rise over the picturesque chain of islands that makes up the eastern part of the Misool archipelago. Take tenders to a large cave where it is possible to swim, snorkel or simply float while gazing up at the cavernous grotto adorned with stalactites. T hen move on to a mysterious jellyfish lake and swim among the many thousands of stingless animals: undoubtedly one of Raja Ampat’s most memorable activities.

In the afternoon, use the tenders to explore more of this impressive maze of karst islands, both above and below the surface, complete with mysterious skull cairns in sea-cave cemeteries and prehistoric cave paintings estimated to be 3,000-5,000 years old.

Wake early once again and go ashore. Follow local local guides through the forest to hopefully see the lesser bird of paradise as they dance around in their “lekking” trees.   On the way back, stroll around the village, possibly including a school visit, to learn about the way Nature Conservancy is working with the village to empower local women with a fishing practice called “ sasi .”

Today the ship is positioned off the extreme southern tip of Halmahera Island for snorkeling and a visit to a local Bajau sea gypsy village to learn about their way of life.

Wake up off the western coast of Bacan and go ashore to explore the forested slopes in search of Wallace’s giant bee and the huge and magnificent golden birdwing butterfly.   During this trip hope to see some of other endemic animals of these islands, including parrots, cockatoos, lorikeets, hornbills, the elusive cuscus and the endangered black-crested macaque.

Today wake up off the coast of Halmahera and head to the village of Dodinga : the very place where AR Wallace was living when he discovered the mechanism which drives evolutionary change — natural selection. His Letter to Charles Darwin was the catalyst that prompted Darwin to publish his book Origin of Species  in 1859, which explained the theory in greater detail.

Dodinga  is a  pretty little  riverside village with friendly people,  colorful houses and the ruins of an old Portuguese fort — its importance in the history of science cannot be understated. After spending some time with the villagers, sharing some fresh coconuts and enjoying their hospitality, head back to the boat for lunch and then go off for an afternoon of snorkeling  and relaxation.  Tonight enjoy a final farewell party .

Today marks the end of the adventure, but first head out for a tour of the city, which has retained its commercial and political importance as the administrative and trading center  of North Maluku. V isit a couple of old Portuguese and Dutch forts and pay a visit to the Sultan’s Palace with its rich collection of heirlooms.

The In the Wake of Wallace cruise begins in Sorong, Indonesia (SOQ), and ends in Ternate, Indonesia (TTE) .  We highly recommend arriving one day prior to your trip start date in case of any flight delay, cancellation or lost luggage issues. East Indies Spice Exploration Itinerary

The alternative East Indies Spice Exploration cruise begins in the town of Maumere on Flores Island, nearby to Komodo National Park, and sails northeast to the City of Ambon on the island of the same name. Visit remote villages and historic forts, go trekking, and enjoy ample opportunities to snorkel and paddle.

Route map of East Indies Spice Exploration Indonesia small ship cruise, operating between Maumere & Ambon, through the Banda Sea.

After arriving in the early afternoon from Bali, be met at the Maumere airport by the tour leader and taken directly to the boat to meet fellow passengers and the crew. Cruise out of the harbor and head off to the east, taking time to become familiar with the ship. Stop for a snorkel and a swim along the way, before sunset cocktails and dinner as the ship cruises on into the night.

Katharina, Ombak Putih

In the morning the ship will be moored offshore of the capital town of Flores, a Christian-dominated island as a result of Portuguese influence. Go ashore and see the five Catholic churches and the Stations of the Cross along the waterfront. During lunch the ship will cross to a neighboring island for a visit to a small local village and the ruins of an old Portuguese fort dating back to the 16th Century. Later in the afternoon, get out the snorkeling gear and explore one of the richly vibrant nearby reefs.

Wake up on Lembata Island in a bite-shaped bay under the gaze of a massive live volcano called Ile Api–Island of Fire. Be welcomed ashore in a local village with singing and dancing, and be witness to the production of their famous local textiles. After lunch on the boat, sail across the bay to snorkel on a vibrant local reef and to swim and paddle on a local beach. This evening, the crew will set up for a beach BBQ and party under the stars before heading off for an overnight cruise to the next destination.

Today, visit a traditional village up in the mountains. Be welcomed by the chief and witness a ceremonial war dance in honor of this visit. See their traditional Moko war drums and intricately designed Ikat fabrics, which have been woven and dyed using age-old techniques, and used in local bridal dowries for centuries. Then weigh anchor and cruise east while enjoying lunch on board, stopping in the late afternoon at a picturesque tropical island to snorkel and swim on a coral reef.

Wake up in a lovely bay on Wetar Island and go ashore to a local fishing village to meet the locals and see their way of life as they dry their catch on the beach. Spend the day swimming and beaching, snorkeling and exploring, and indulge in a bit of local culture by way of sopi, a strong alcoholic drink made from a local palm tree. Later in the afternoon, weigh anchor and continue the journey east.

This morning go ashore on a small island and be welcomed into a remote village where the locals will share their way of life as farmers and fishermen. After lunch continue cruising, stopping off at another tiny island—this one deserted—to swim, kayak, snorkel over the reef and relax on the sand. This evening the crew will set up for a beach BBQ for all to dance and sing into the night before heading off again for an overnight cruise to the next destination.

Today is another day of cruising and exploring in one of the remotest parts of Indonesia. Visit a very simple village where the people’s houses are made using the products of the sago palm, the staple crop in this part of the world. The villagers will demonstrate how they process the heart of the sago palm into the edible product that sustains them. After lunch, cruise around the island and stop off to explore the beaches and reefs by snorkel.

Today will be a day at sea with a route that will pass four spectacular volcanic sea mounts, explicit examples of Indonesia’s place along the Ring of Fire. One of these islands is uninhabited by people, and is home to tens of thousands of sea birds, (brown and red-footed boobies, and frigate birds), who will likely come out to encircle the boat in great numbers upon her approach. If the tide allows, go ashore and investigate, and surely have a snorkel. In the late afternoon proceed north to the fabled Spice Islands.

By dawn spot the Banda Archipelago Spice Islands, original home of nutmeg and the scene of much bloodshed between the colonial powers of Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries over control of the spice trade. Go ashore and visit Fort Revenge, built by the Dutch, before snorkeling on the local reef.

Later, head across to the main island group and the main town, and anchor in the beautiful enclosed anchorage under the imposing gaze of a nearly 2,000-foot-high volcano. If arriving before nightfall, go ashore and explore the town.

Today is a day of exploring the history and beauty of the Spice Islands with a visit to the main town of the Spice Islands and its fort overlooking the harbor. Wander through the streets and markets of this bustling town and meet the local people. After lunch on the boat, take a local boat over to the biggest of the islands to walk among the vast nutmeg plantations, visit another Dutch fort, talk with the locals and visit one of the last perkineers, the farmers who still run the larger plantations on the island who will tell about life on the islands.

Later in the afternoon, snorkel on a local reef and have a chance to see the rare and multi-hued Mandarin fish, which only comes out at dusk to mate. Dinner will be had ashore at a local restaurant that offers traditional and delicious local dishes.

This morning offers time for a final stroll around the town or a last snorkel before saying farewell to the Spice islands around lunchtime and heading north. Enjoy lunch on the way, passing another major seabird island, before settling in for a relaxing afternoon on board scouring the horizon for migrating whales.

Wake up just south of the final destination. Spend the last few hours enjoying the majesty of the ocean, and possibly see more whales along the way. As the ship drops anchor in the harbor, say farewell to the crew and tour leaders and be taken to the airport for onward journeys, ending a magical 12 days of exploration and adventure.

Antarctica Cruise Review: Antarctica21 Cruise with Adventure Life Travel

A ntarctica has been on the top of my dream wish list for decades now. But honestly I didn’t think I would ever have the opportunity to visit because I just didn’t know when I would have the tens of thousands of extra cash laying around. Enter Adventure Life Travel. I was working with Adventure Life Travel to put together a trip for my 12th birthday (Leap Day baby!). We were thinking Indonesia, but nothing was quite working out. And then a room opened up on their yearly chartered sailing to Antarctica. I was blown out of the water when it was suggested we go there, even though it was a bit after my birthday.

I was so excited to finally get to Antarctica. While we had a few hiccups at the last minute – namely my 13 year old son needing emergency surgery 1 week before our ship was set to sail, we managed to make it all happen! And wow what a trip it was.

Below I share my review of the chartered sailing of the Antarctica21 Magellan Explorer by Adventure Life Travel. This is their second year to charter this ship and many people on board said they would have loved to have more information about this specific sailing as it’s different than the norm. So this is for you!

Who is Antarctica21?

While this review can help give you more information on the Antarctica 21 experience in general, some of the details will be different based on our chartered sailing verus Antarctica21’s typical trips.

Who is Adventure Life Travel?

Adventure Life Travel is a travel agency that offers customized tours to all over the world. Like I mentioned above I was working with them to visit Indonesia to see komodo dragons. They offer customized itineraries but also can get you on board an Antarctic cruise (or any cruise), set you up in Panama for a wonderful vacation and so much more. While I am also a travel agent , I highly recommend Adventure Life Travel as well. They have a good size staff who focus on different areas, some of who have even received Travel & Leisure awards!

Antarctica21 Cruise Itinerary Review

For this article I am focusing on the itinerary that we did as part of our chartered sailing with Adventure Life Travel. For those looking into this cruise, you will not find this as a published listing on the Antarctica21 website as it is not the typically offering. Even though this post focuses the Adventure Life Travel itinerary, feel free to email me  or ask a question at the end if you’d like to learn more about the other itinerary options.

Interested in going to Antarctica? Upcoming sailings are in Nov 2024, March 2025 and March 2026

Day 0: Arrival to Ushuaia

One of the differences between the Adventure Life Travel chartered sailing and a typical Antarctica21 sailing is that you must find your way to Ushuaia on your own. We flew from Los Angeles to Atlanta to Buenos Aires to Ushuaia. It took about 31 hours total, but went relatively smooth except for a few hours of delays in Buenos Aires due to thunderstorms.

Tip: If you have tight connections try not to check a bag if possible or take your most needed items on board with you in case of lost luggage. Several people from our flights did not receive their luggage in time for their ship departure.

Day 1:  Arrival Day

Typically most ships do not begin the embarkation process until mid to late afternoon. This means you have the morning to leisurely get situated and to sightsee. Ushuaia is an adorable town with plenty to keep you busy for a day or two even. During our morning, we went to the Ushuaia sight at the end of the boardwalk, went to the Visitor Center for our Antarctica stamps (Bring an old passport!) and had a nice lunch before our transport arrived. You do not need transport, but it is nice to not have to lug your bags down their dock to the boat. If you choose to organize a transfer with Adventure Life Travel, the bus will drop you off right in front of the boat.

We  immediately set our luggage down and headed into the boat at the 3 pm boarding time. The crew were there to greet us and bring us to our rooms. You will need to drop your passport here at the front desk and pick it up on your exit.

We spent some time exploring our room and the ship before our first meeting to welcome us and introduce us to the boat. Next up we had our safety drill and meeting at the muster area. Following this, it was time for our first dinner and sunset on the Beagle Channel.

Day 2-3: Drake Passage

Transiting through the Drake Passage is a dreaded part of the journey for many. We were quite lucky on our way South to get the “Drake Lake” with relatively calm waters. We had maybe 2-3 meter swells, but overall we were pretty good. Our days were filled with IAATO safety briefings, cleaning our gear that would go on landings to make sure we didn’t have any seeds or plants to accidental transport, and many lectures about Antarctica and all that we would see and experience. We really enjoyed our days at sea learning about what was to come.

Our passage was quite smooth, so we ended up arriving early and got a surprise landing in the late afternoon on Day 3.

Day 4-7: Cruising the Antarctic Peninsula

Our sailing also included one continental landing, which I am sure most boats attempt as well.

I do not share any specifics here on where we landed, because you have no real say in where you go on these cruises. Each boat has a variety of sites they try to get passengers to in order to see penguins, whales, snowy mountains and icebergs, but most sailings will not include the same landings or locations for excursions as they try to lessen their environmental impact.

During your days in Antarctica, you will also have the opportunity for a Polar Plunge which is a once in a lifetime experience worth trying. On our boat, 73 out of the 93 passengers opted for this – the most of any of their cruises that season!

Day 8-9: Crossing the Drake Passage Again

The sad day of leaving the White Continent will come before you know it and it will be time to pass back through the Drake Passage. On our way home, we got to experience a real Drake Shake which meant that for the 2 days of return sailing, our lectures were cancelled and the guests mostly stayed in their rooms or in the upstairs lounge. It was a great experience to have for us since we didn’t get motion sickness, but I know many were suffering. Take your pills before and make a visit to the ship’s doctor for some powerful medication if you are really struggling.

Check out are ultra viral video of dinner on the Drake Passage

Day 10: Disembarkation

Our final day on board is really just packing up, eating breakfast and disembarking by 9am We had a tour scheduled through Adventure Life Travel so we actually had to leave at 8 a.m. so we could maximize our day before flying home that evening. It was a wonderful way to end our trip and we are so thankful to have had this experience with Antarctica 21 and Adventure Life Travel.

Magellan Explorer Ship Review

Antarctica21’s state-of-the-art polar vessel, the Magellan Explorer, is a model of innovative design and environmental stewardship. The Magellan Explorer was specifically designed for exploring the Antarctic region. This ship is sleek and rugged simultaneously.

The purpose built design has a reinforced hull capable of navigating through icy waters and harsh weather conditions. It is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and safety features to ensure a comfortable and secure journey for passengers.

Accommodation

The cabins on board the Magellan Explorer are elegantly appointed, offering modern amenities and breathtaking views of the Antarctic landscape through porthole windows or balconies. Most of the rooms on board have balconies, only the 3rd Deck rooms do not.

Tip: Highly recommend the rooms with a king bed as it is easy to slide out of bed in the twin rooms!

I’ve always heard horror stories about food on cruise ships, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Let me assure you this is not a cruise ship! This expedition ship offered exquisite dining experiences at all meals.  All of our meals were prepared by the ship’s talented chefs overlooking beautiful scenery.

Breakfast and lunch are served buffet style. For both meals, there are plenty of options both cold and hot, as well as a custom egg station for breakfast. During lunch there was a large salad bar with something for everyone in addition to the hot items. For a special treat one lunch had a stir fry station which was a hit.

Dinners are sit down, menu style. There was always a meat option, fish option and a vegetarian option. In addition to the main, there are starters, soup and several dessert options. Every single meal was delicious and very filling.

The Magellan Explorer is not a luxury cruise ship, rather this is a boutique expedition ship focusing on the purpose of visiting Antarctica.

While on board the Magellan Explorer you can purchase WiFi packages to get you through the trip. There are two offerings – one that allows messages and limited use on other apps (Duolingo) with unlimited use. My son used this service for the duration of the trip and was quite happy with it. He was able to access Windy to check the weather, do his Duolingo and message with friends and family.

Another option is the all encompassing WiFi that is limited to 10GB. If you use it carefully it can easily last the duration of the trip. I got a little sloppy the last few days and used it all up 1 day before arriving back to land. This plan allows all social media uploads and downloads.

Drinks / Snacks

Unlike on many luxury cruise ships, our boat did not included unlimited alcohol. Wine was served with dinner for free as were other sodas, but apart from these times, you would need to pay for your drinks at the bar. That said, each room was equipped with wine, a few beers and sodas which were refilled on an unlimited basis during the trip. Additionally, each room had a variety of snacks that were complementary and refilled as needed. We particularly enjoyed our small can so Pringles which would help with any nausea.

Apart from the meals provided each day, there were also cookies in the lounges and afternoon snacks in the panoramic lounge at happy hour.

Services on Board the Ship

Even though this is a smaller size ship, the Magellan Explorer doesn’t compromise on expedition capabilities. It features spacious observation decks, a panoramic lounge, a library, science lab and more. The panoramic lounge doubles as a well-equipped lecture room where expert guides provide insightful presentations on the Antarctic environment and wildlife.

One of the best parts of this cruise for us were the expert led lectures every single day. During the Drake Passage crossing our days were filled with informative lectures on the history of the region, wildlife, science and so much more. In addition at the end of each day, we would have a daily briefing to go over what we did that day, what we saw and what to expect the next day. In these sessions, expedition crew would also provide mini lessons on things that we experienced during our outings.

Furthermore, throughout the ship there were information boards with educational resources about the wildlife, the history of the area or environment. We loved these and only wished we could have received these as a take home package!

Health & Wellness

This boat is not for the folks who want spa services or to be pampered in that way. While the boat does have a small gym, there are sadly no treadmills and it was closed during rough weather. However many people, including my son made use of it and enjoyed it.

Additionally, there is a small sauna that was also highly used by many of the passengers. We unfortunately never made it there, but it looked lovely.

There is a large room with library books on Antarctica in many languages as well as two desktop computers in this room with internet for any guests who did not want to purchase a package on their own.  This was a great relaxing room and the place to load up on the delicious espresso before breakfast!

Excursions off the Ship

One of the most important parts of any Antarctica cruise is getting off the ship. If you haven’t already decided on what cruise to take, make sure to read our post on what to consider when booking a cruise . Since this boat has less than 100 passengers, all guests are able to do all excursions at the same time.

During our cruise, the only offerings on board were kayaking, snowshoeing and citizen science. Kayaking was sold out ages ago, with most guests booking that a year or more prior to sailing! Snowshoeing is something you sign up on board. Each sailing can offer 1-3 options for snowshoeing so if this is super important to you, sign up quickly. For the record, we are glad we missed out on this as the only snowshoe opportunity was also the only landing with chinstrap penguins. They hike took them away from the penguins for the entire landing.

In addition to these offerings, the Magellan Explorer is one of 15 boats in Antarctica that participates in Citizen Science Research. This was again an option that you needed to sign up for in advance, on board the ship. Only 16 passengers were taken out to do this.  This excursion is super cool if you are at all interested in science, data collection or just understanding more about how the ecosystems here work. We highly recommend it!

Staff & Crew

The Expedition staff was amazing. Our crew included an Expedition Leader, two mountain guides, a bird guy, a marine biologist, a historian, a photographer and more that I am surely forgetting! The staff were professionals in their field before coming on board the ship which was wonderful to see. Often we find ship crew to be young, right out of college types, but here the crew were sophisticated professionals who knew their stuff!

Our Expedition leader always had a Plan A, B, C, and who knows how many more, and they never seemed frantic or stressed.  The crew were fantastic at helping guests during rough water, and also helping anyone with mobility issues. There were a few people on our boat who had trouble with the rocky landings, so instead a guide would take them on a spontaneous zodiac ride. On one of those rides they witnessed a leopard seal hunting and capturing a penguin!

While there are a ton of cruise options to Antarctica these days, all offering a variety of excursions and packages, we were 100% happy and satisfied with the Adventure Life Travel chartered trip. The boat was excellent. The food, staff and excursions were above our expectations on all levels. The services with Adventure Life Travel before and after the trip were also top notch. If you are looking for a life changing experience in Antarctica surrounded by knowledgeable staff and crew who will make sure you get the most out of your trip, then this is your cruise!

Frequently Asked Questions

How is money handled on the ship?

There are no real cash transactions on the boat until you settle your bill at the end. Anything that you purchase in the small gift shop or at the bar will be put on your room. At the end of the cruise you can settle your bill and pay gratuities with your credit card or I assume with cash as well, although I am not 100% as I didn’t see any cash!

How cold was it? Did you have to buy any special gear?

For our trip at the end of the season it was actually not very cold. It was almost never below 32 degrees (0 celsius). The biggest issue was probably the wind chill. On board the ship, you could easily wear a single long sleeve and even sometimes a short sleeve. Here is my packing list about what I brought and should have brought!

Note: Parka’s are not provided on this ship, so you will need to bring your own ski gear or rent a parka before arriving.

There is a doctor on board who is available for anyone.  Many guests did end up using her services for sea sickness as well as for injuries during the Drake Shake passage.

What about the ice? Can the ship make it through?

This ship is specifically designed for this region and is very safe both in and out of ice. We were at the end of the season and there was quite a bit of ice beginning to form and cluster around the further south we ventured. This boat handled it like a champ.

The pure, stark beauty in Antarctica comes with a sense of remoteness so extreme, it’s as if you’ve traveled to another planet. This beauty is difficult to put into words, but once you see it, it will never leave you. This is truly a trip that anyone who loves nature, the environment and wildlife should embark upon.
