Haifa cruise port

Region Mediterranean - Black Sea

Local Time 2024-04-29 01:47

Port Haifa cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Haifa, Tel Aviv-Nazareth, Israel. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Port Haifa is Israel's principal/main and largest seaport, both by cargo and passenger/cruise shipping volumes. The Port is located on the Mediterranean and along the north side of Mt Carmel/Mount Mar Elias. Depending on the cruise company, both Port Ashdod and Port Haifa are used as cruise ports to Tel Aviv-Yafo and Jerusalem (Israel's capital). By population (around 280,000), Haifa City is Israel's third-largest - following Jerusalem (~800K) and Tel Aviv (~450K).

Haifa is also the cruise port to Nazareth (approx 45 km / 28 mi to the east, or ~40 min drive distance). In Nazareth, tourists visit the Basilica of the Annunciation, the Church of St Joseph (the site of Joseph's carpentry shop) and St Mary's Well.

Port Haifa (locode ILHFA) is approx 90 km (57 mi to the north) from Tel Aviv and approx 150 km (90 mi to the southeast) from Jerusalem. The driving distance from Haifa to Jerusalem is 2 hours, to Tel Aviv - 1 hour. Tel Aviv is easily accessible from the railway station located near Haifa Cruise Terminal (train travel time is 40-60 min).

Haifa Port's current infrastructure includes two containership terminals, two multi-purpose cargo terminals, a R0-Ro terminal (serving vehicle carriers), and a cruise terminal. The Port has total quay length 2,9 km / ~2 mi and max draft/water depth between 11-16,5 m / 36-55 ft.

IMPORTANT : On July 14, 2022, Israel announced the sale of Haifa Port to APSEZ (Adani Ports & SEZ Ltd/Special Economic Zone/India's largest port operator and logistics company) and Gadot Group (Israeli chemical company) for Israeli shekels/ILS 4,1 billion (USD 1,18B). The successful bidding in the Port's privatization tender allowed the Adani-Gadot consortium (70/30) to buy all (100%) of Haifa Port Company Ltd's shares under a 32-year concession (through 2054).

In 2021, Port Haifa handled nearly 50% of Israel’s freight volume (1,46 million TEU-containers and 2,56 million tons of cargoes), most of which (~70%) is with Adani Ports and the remaining ~30% with Gadot.

Western Port (the old Haifa Port) was built in 1933 as Palestine's first modern harbor waterway. However, it blocked the city from the waterfront. Its wharves are narrow and outdated. New wharves for latest generation cargo vessels are planned for the new Eastern Port. There is a proposal for constructing a new Haifa Waterfront area. The development project transformed part of the port into a large public complex.

This city is ancient and special in its own right, with a famous fortress. In antiquity, it was known under the names "Sycaminum" and "Caiphas" (during the Christian Crusades in the 11th-12th centuries). In the 12th century, a castle built on the site by Crusaders was destroyed by Saladin, sultan of Syria and Egypt.

The city is also close to the Galilee Sea (aka Lake Tiberias/Kinneret/Kinnereth) - a freshwater lake encircled by a beautiful beach. In the past, the vicinity of the lake was well populated as some of Asia Minor's trade routes converged at the lake - a total of 9 cities flourished on its shores. The lake was also a center of an extensive fishing industry.

From Haifa, it is also possible to visit Jerusalem City - sacred to Jews, Christians and Muslims alike. Most cruise ship passengers don't stay in Haifa, but instead book tours in Jerusalem or Bethlehem (up to 3-hour travel time). From Haifa start tours to Galilee, Acre, Nazareth, Caesarea. Due to the popularity of all these "Holy Land" travel destinations, many cruise liners stay in port overnight.

For season 2018, the cruise port had scheduled 34 ship calls with around 25,000 passengers. The port's record year was 2012 when it handled a total of 118 ship calls and approx 170,000 passengers. For season 2019, the port had scheduled 46 calls with around 60,000 passengers.

In Haifa is homeported the Mano Cruises ship Golden Iris . Departures are offered in the period March through November, with ~60 turnarounds (roundtrips) and approx 50,000 passengers annually.

Haifa cruise terminal

Haifa Port handles both ferries and cruise ships at its newly expanded cruise terminal. The facility is sized approx 5500 m2 (59200 ft2) and offers as amenities cafeteria, currency exchange, parking, terminal for tour buses, duty-free shopping, telecommunication center (free WiFi).

The nearest train station is under 5-min walking distance from the cruise terminal. The railway connects the seaport with Tel Aviv directly. The downtown is a 5-min easy walk from the Port.

Occasionally, complimentary bus shuttle service to the cruise port is also provided.

(NEW) Haifa cruise terminal

By the new redevelopment project for the old Western Port of Haifa, all new buildings are of warehouse design (industrial-looking linear structures) and 2-story high. The Port's old infrastructure (including gantry cranes, grain conveyors, roads, train tracks, etc) and all existing port facilities remained intact.

In the Port's east area, the 3 existing/abandoned warehouses were redesigned to form the "concrete cathedral" housing many public events and activities (bith commercial and cultural).

Among the project's main features are building a wide pedestrian waterfront promenade and spacious public space. The new promenade is lined up with small hotels, cafes, restaurants, outdoor food markets, among others. There are no shopping malls and new residential properties. The existing residential area (an Arab neighborhood) within the waterfront was renewed. The adjacent Navy Port will be also developed, with its wharves converted to a modern yacht marina.

Construction works also included building of pedestrian walkways, small streets and plazas. The plan was officially approved in 2013.

After its privatization in July 2023, Haifa Port contracted the construction engineering company Bermello, Ajamil & Partners Inc (1939-founded, subsidiary of BAP Development Inc) to design Israel's first purpose-built cruise terminal. BAP's cruise terminal design projects include the USA's ports of Miami FL, Seattle WA, San Francisco CA, NYC, Galveston TX, as well as Singapore.

Haifa Israel Port Guide

Haifa is a portal to the rest of Israel, an industrial, well-connected city where passengers on a cruise to Haifa, Israel can easily book excursions and tours of Tel-Aviv or the Jordan River. It’s not well-known as a tourist destination, but the city boasts impressive museums and outdoor attractions like the beautiful Baha’i Gardens or the Haifa City Museum. In its own right as a destination, Haifa has a growing arts scene and areas like the German Colony are bustling commercial areas where travelers can grab a bite, rest from the day’s exploration, and catch views of the glittering Mediterranean Sea.

Haifa’s proximity to religiously sites for those practicing Jewish and Christian faiths makes the experience particularly meaningful for travelers passing through on their Mediterranean cruise . These days, Nazareth isn’t the small village depicted in the Bible—it’s a full- grown, modern city—but its role in the life of Jesus Christ makes it an important religious site. You can stand at the crossing of the Jordan River, only a little over an hour from Haifa. The Mount of Beatitudes where Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount is believed to have been delivered is merely an hour east, too.

Culture & History of the Haifa Cruise Port

Haifa’s history dates back to over 3,000 years ago, and the city is the third-largest behind Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv. Claims have been made to Haifa by various groups throughout the centuries like the Canaanites, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, the British, and others. When the State of Israel formed in 1948, Haifa became governed by its own municipality. Haifa historically has been a major industrial city for Israel, so it’s not as built up as a tourist destination as a result, but the nearby religious sites drive a lot of traffic and interest into the area each year.

Culturally, the area is a mix of Jews Christians, Muslims, Ahmedi, and other faiths including the Baha’i, and Haifa is renowned for its effortlessly blending multiple cultures into the fabric of the city. Every year, one of Haifa’s biggest events is the International Film Festival which lasts for a week in September. When you tour religious sites in Haifa and other parts of Israel, be sure to wear clothing covering your shoulders and knees to respect the religious practices of the region.

Haifa Port Facilities & Location

The Port of Haifa is one of three ports in the area, and the one closest to the center of the city. The other two ports are the Port of Ashdod, and the Port of Eilat. The port services both cruise traffic and cargo. Within the terminal are souvenirs, duty-free shopping, areas for currency exchange, and free WiFi for passengers. The port easily connects passengers with the Haifa Center Railway Station. There’s also a subway that can take you to the top of Mount Carmel.

Transportation in Haifa

Haifa itself is a hilly but walkable city. The Port of Haifa will place passengers right in the city center once your Haifa cruise ship docks. Across the port is a railway station, where you can immediately catch trains to Akko and Tel Aviv. Buses run through the city’s neighborhoods, and of course taxis and private cars are an option for travelers.

Shopping Near the Haifa Cruise Port

Indoor shopping malls are popular in Haifa, like the Panorama Center in Carmel. South of Haifa, there’s an artists’ village called Ein Hod where local artists sell pottery jewelry, blown glass, and more. One of the shopping malls you can check out while on your cruise to Haifa, Israel is called the Grand Canyon, where hundreds of shops and big chains can be found. It’s about a 15 minute drive from the port of Haifa to the mall. There are also flea markets in Haifa where leather goods, handmade bags, and bargains await.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The official currency of Israel is the shekel (NIS), and you can also use credit cards while you’re in Haifa. The policy for tipping while you’re in Israel varies, but restaurants, bars, and cafes should receive a tip between 10% and 12%, or more at your discretion if the service was excellent. Locals don’t tip in taxis in Haifa, so taxi drivers don’t exactly expect a tip. Keeping a little cash on you is good so that you can tip in cash rather than adding to the bill, which is how restaurants prefer tourists to tip while they’re visiting Israel.

WHATSINPORT.COM: YOUR CRUISE GUIDE TO 1200 PORTS OF CALL

Interactive world cruise map, home | cruise ships | port expenses | hints and tips, haifa israel cruise port guide.

Haifa Port is Israel's main passenger ship port handling both cruise and ferry line traffic at the newly expanded cruise terminal. The 5,500 sq meter facility has a cafeteria, currency changer, parking facilities, and a bus terminal for excursion groups. A large duty-free shopping facility and international telecommunications center with free WiFi. The train station is only a two minute walk from the cruise terminal where you can catch the train into Tel Aviv. Car rentals can also be arranged. Depending on where you are docked, a shuttle will be in place to get you to the cruise terminal.

You will be docked close to the center of the city, a 15 minute walk. Be aware: Haifa is a hilly town.

Most cruise passengers skip Haifa and opt for the two- three hour drive to Jerusalem or Bethlehem. Still, Haifa has some sights that are worth exploring. Due to time restraints most cruisers opt for a ship organized excursion.

Sightseeing:

It's a nice sized city built on hills (it's often called the Middle East 'San Francisco').

Haifa is home to significant populations of Jews, Muslim and Christian Arabs, Ahmadis (in Kababir), Druze (in Daliyat al-Carmel), Bahá'ís, and others, and has often been characterised as a mosaic of peaceful coexistence between the communities.

The green Carmel, blue sea and the golden sand at the beach front. A modern harbor and remarkable beaches. Breathtaking landscape of the Haifa Bay area and Bahá'í Gardens , and the Carmel National Park .

Mount Carmel has always been linked with abundance and fertility, as indicated in the meaning of its original name "kerem" (vineyard). Mount Carmel, sacred to Jews and Christians alike, is also well known for its significant importance to the Bahá'ís, and serves as their spiritual and administrative center.

The shrine of the Báb , the prophet-herald of the Bahá'í Faith, is situated at the heart of the Carmel slopes. The shrine is surrounded by spectacular terraced gardens sculptured into the mountainside. The shrine of the Báb, also known as the "golden dome," is one of Haifa's most distinctive symbols.

The Haifa Tourist Board is situated at 48, Ben Gurion Avenue.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

The Carmelit is the one and only funicular (underground metro) in Israel and runs between three of the most important city centers in Haifa:

‘Down Town' – the salient feature of which is that it is one of the key business centers of Haifa

Hadar - a residential, commercial and business area of Haifa And Mercaz ha

Carmel (the Carmel Center) – a residential, entertainment and leisure area of Haifa.

The renovated and revamped underground train comprises only 4 carriages which are fully air conditioned and modernized. It works according to the principle of lifts or elevators. The carriages move on a track and wheel system which is very close to that of an ordinary train. However, they are pulled along by means of a cable operated from the main Carmelit station, which is also where the main control room is located.

You could take the Carmelit whose lower end is easily walkable from the cruise terminal to get to the top of the Bahá'í Gardens, and when you exit at the last stop, you'll have marvelous views over the city and nearby coast.

Unlike other major cities in Israel, local buses (but not the Carmelit) run on Saturday and other Jewish holy days. However, they don't operate on Friday evenings. Haifa Has two main bus terminals where passengers can switch between inter-city buses and trains to the local routes operated by Egged bus company.

It pays to compare your cruise line tours here .

Nearby Places:

Druze Villages. 30min by sherut or longer by bus to the top of Mt. Carmel.

Galilee/Nazareth A organized excursion in recommended, due to time restraints.

Shopping and Food

In Israel shopping malls are called 'canyons'.

Haifa's mountainous location makes it quite unfriendly for the pedestrian, therefore shopping avenues are rare.

The shops that are found in the city center offer a cheap and essential variety. On the other hand, Haifa has a well known reputation for its wide variety of malls and shopping centers such as the Kiryon, Kastra Center, Kanyon Haifa and 'Lev Hamifratz'. In addition, the 'Grand Kanyon' is considered to be the newest and biggest mall, including international brand names such as Armani, Lacoste, Benetton and Zara as well as local brands and a wide food court.

Eating out in Israel is expensive especially if you dine at a sit down restaurant. You can enjoy any meal at any outdoor cafe, the food is always good and inexpensive. Sit down restaurant lunch can go for about $30 for lunch and $50 for dinner. Your best bet is to use credit cards, you usually get a better rate. Also, you can use American dollars, most places will take dollars.

New Israeli Shekel (NIS)

There are many ATMs around Israel that are all connected to European and American banking systems.
