2024 Cruise Line Reviews

Cunard Review

  • Best for British-style luxury sailing worldwide
  • Three ships in the fleet (with another debuting in 2024)
  • Guests of all ages permitted (not an 18+ cruise line)
  • Most dining is included (The Golden Lion gastro-pub is extra)
  • Recommended gratuities ($14.50 or $16.50 per person, per night) not included in fare

Cunard is a British cruise line with a rich history and tradition, dating back to 1840. It is known for its luxurious ships, outstanding service, and elegant formal evenings. Cunard operates three ocean liners, the Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria, and Queen Elizabeth, which offer a wide range of itineraries around the world.

Think British and formal

The Queen Mary 2 is Cunard's flagship and the only ocean liner in the world that regularly makes transatlantic crossings between New York and Southampton. It is a grand and stately ship that harks back to the golden age of ocean travel, with elegant public areas, formal dining rooms, and spacious cabins. Onboard, guests can enjoy a wide range of activities, including live entertainment, art classes, and lectures by well-known experts.

More relaxed experience on the smaller ships

The Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth are both smaller than the Queen Mary 2 but still offer a luxurious cruising experience. These ships have a more contemporary design and a relaxed, informal atmosphere, but still retain the high standards of service and cuisine that Cunard is known for. They offer a range of itineraries, from short breaks to longer voyages to destinations such as the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, and the Caribbean.

Spring break cruises are available - just not in the Caribbean

Because of what Cunard does and doesn't specialize in, it was to be expected that there wouldn't be any March sailings in the Caribbean (which is what we used as a comparison point across cruise lines): they're just not operating in that part of the world at that time. Of course not: why would a cruise line with British heritage have anything to do with spring break timing in the US?! But, if you're trying to line up an amazing trip over that holiday, Cunard can be found going from Sydney to Hong Kong (16 nights), Sydney to Singapore (22 nights), Sydney to Cape Town (39 nights), or taking "short break" trips in Australia, from Hong Kong to Singapore, you get the idea.

Pack your tux or gown

One of the unique features of Cunard is its formal evenings, which are a throwback to the grandeur of the early days of ocean travel. On these evenings, guests are expected to dress up in their finest attire, with men wearing tuxedos or suits and women donning elegant gowns. The formal evenings include a special dinner, dancing, and live entertainment, and are a highlight of the Cunard experience.

Best Cruise Lines

Cunard is also known for its exceptional dining options. Each ship offers a range of restaurants, from traditional formal dining rooms to more casual eateries. Most dining choices are included in your fare, but the gastro-pub options at The Golden Lion will incur an extra cost. The cuisine is inspired by the destinations visited on the itinerary, with a focus on fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Cunard also offers a famous afternoon tea service, which is a nod to the line's British heritage.

Luxury but not all-inclusive

Cunard is a luxury cruise line, but it's not all-inclusive. You'll have to pay for any shore excursions you choose, and your gratuities ($14.50 per person per night for Britannia and Britannia Club staterooms, $16.50 per person per night for Queens and Princess Grill suites) will be automatically added to your account. WiFi is another extra that you'll pay for, unless you reach Gold, Platinum, or Diamond World Club "frequent sailor" benefits - or if you're taking one of Cunard's exceptional World Voyages (think sailings of at least 16 nights, and ones that go up to 100+ nights and visit ports in all four continents).

Not adults-only

Also, don't expect your Cunard cruise to be child-free. Children are welcome on Cunard, and there are clubs for those young cruisers with age-specific activities offered day and night.

Wonderful cruise line but not a match for many US-based guests

For US-based vacationers looking to cruise in exotic locations around the world and have a fancy onboard experience, Cunard could be worth looking at - especially for those who love all things British and having a daily afternoon tea would be the epitome of excellence. On the other hand, if you want easy-peasy departures from US ports year-round, Cunard won't fit the bill.

The 15 Best Cruise Lines

Which cruise line is the best.

Cruising is a popular way of traveling for many people, offering a unique experience that combines the convenience of a floating hotel with the excitement of visiting multiple destinations in one trip. In an average year, over fifteen million people say "all aboard" and set sail on an amazing vacation.

There are many different cruise lines to choose from, and each one offers a different type of experience. Some are geared towards families, while others are more focused on luxury or adventure. What would you like to see and do while you're onboard? Is a casino a must-have or a rather-avoid? Would a Broadway-caliber show tip the scales for you? Do you need a wide range of activities to keep the kiddos happy while the adults live it up or relax? The onboard activities and amenities can really make or break your vacation, so be sure you know what you're getting.

The Best Cruise Lines

Cruise Line FAQ

Which cruise line is the best, what is included in the cost of a cruise, what is the minimum age to cruise, what are the dining options on a cruise ship, are cruise ships crowded, do i have to dress up, are activities included at destination ports, can i bring my own alcohol onboard.

Compare the Best Reviews

Continued from above...

Another factor that can influence which cruise line you choose is the itinerary. Cruise ships travel all over the world, but some cruise lines may not have destinations available where you're hoping to go. You should also consider the size of the ship: larger ships offer more amenities, but smaller ships can access ports that bigger ships can't.

Speaking of amenities, make sure you understand what you'll get as part of your fare and which extras will come with an additional cost. For example, most cruises offer drink packages for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, but a few have drink stations where you can get complimentary lemonade, coffee and tea. Other amenities that might be important to you are Wi-Fi, spa services, babysitting, fitness classes, and upgraded dining experiences. You can usually get a decent discount if you sign up for an amenities package before you sail, so keep an eye out for promotions in the months leading up to your sailing.

When you take a cruise, it's almost always expected that you'll tip the crew members who have attended to your needs while onboard: your cabin steward ( who probably leaves your towels folded into fun shapes every night ), your servers at your nightly meals, and the head waiter. Cruise lines have a recommended gratuity to cover all three of those staff members, usually $15-$20 per traveler, per day; the total gratuity amount may be charged automatically to your account, or you may be given envelopes to make cash payments.

While it usually isn't mandatory to pay those gratuities - you can ask to have them removed if they're applied automatically, especially if you've received poor service - it's typically considered in poor taste not to tip at the suggested levels (because crew members' salaries, much like servers at your local restaurant, are based on the expectation of tips paid by guests). And, if you receive service that goes above and beyond, adding to the recommended gratuity is always appreciated. Be aware that tips for bartenders, poolside servers, and professional services provided in the spa or elsewhere are not included in the daily suggested gratuity and may be charged automatically at the time of service.

Now that you have a good overview of the cruising experience, which cruise line should you choose? Beyond the points we already covered, here are a few additional criteria that might make it easier to pick:

  • Embarkation port. You could get a great deal on a cruise, but what will it cost you to get to the port? That could involve airfare, an overnight stay or two in a nearby hotel (so that you're less likely to be affected by travel delays), and transportation from the airport or hotel to the port. This is especially true if you're taking a cruise that departs from an international destination.
  • Perks for repeat cruisers. Like frequent flyer programs on airlines, most cruise lines offer benefits the more you sail. If you find yourself absolutely loving cruise vacations, it can be advantageous to put all of your eggs in one basket, so to speak. Rewards programs can include casino benefits, complimentary meals at the upgraded dining experiences, exclusive sail-away parties with free cocktails and tchotchkes, early-access booking on future cruises, and much more.
  • Reputation. It's a really smart idea to see what other travelers have said about their overall experience with a cruise line before booking your trip. The ads on TV may make that private island look amazing, but someone who's been there might point out that you'll pay extra to get on that waterslide. Or, previous cruisers could tell you that despite having several formal nights on the schedule, a particular cruise line has no problem with people showing up to dinner in flip-flops and swimsuit coverups. Find out if the cruise line you're considering lines up in reality with what they advertise.

Here at Top Consumer Reviews, cruising is one of our favorite ways to travel and experience new things. And with so many different cruise lines to choose from, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. But, don't worry: take a look at our in-depth analysis of today's most popular options, find the one that's the best match for your vacation ideas and your travel party, and book that trip you've been dreaming of. Bon voyage!

Our first cruise, and will be looking at another one soon with Cunard!

This is our first cruise and it definitely exceeded our expectations. We were on the Queen Victoria for the 17 day cruise from Singapore to Cape Town travelling with my wife and my two parents, and it is such a memorable experience. The food, crew and activities were of good quality. Never really a dull moment with plenty to do and see. More importantly is this allows me and my wife to rest and enjoy the luxuries on the ship. Looking forward to coming onboard again!

Date of experience : 25 March 2024

Cunard gone downhill and downmarket.

We booked a cruise from Singapore and it was a terrible experience. The food was average and repetative. The meals were rushed. They took 3 attempts to fix the loo. One port day in Capetown was cancelled,as was the port day in Namibia, though they stopped there to take on crew! Their main concern was getting back to Southampton for the next cruise. They take your money but don't deliver what you sign up for. Carnival just want your money. Not a luxury experience. On the positive side the actual cabin staff and waiters were excellent.

Our first cruise taken with Cunard after being with several other cruise companies. Have to say overall it was first class and cannot fault.

The Queen Elisabeth is truly great.

The Queen Elisabeth is an truly great experience with a few minor blemishes (for an Aussi that is). I like really good coffee, not happening unfortunately. The shower armatures are torture if you have soapy hands, so keep a small rag handy. Be a bit weary of the sometimes overpriced excursions. Otherwise, It is the best a man/woman/family can get! I strongly recommend a cruise on the Queen Elisabeth to anybody.

If you dance. Be very careful

Everything very good.... except the dancing. We do both ballroom and sequence. There was absolutely no sequence! several complained they eventually arranged one session at dinner time!! They were possibly surprised by how many missed out on dinner to turn up! We have a cruise booked in June. Very worried about that.

Poor customer service Still waiting for my casino winnings to be transferred from before Christmas, 4 messages and still no result. Would not recommend . I thought your brand was luxury and great customer service.

Our 1st cunard cruise definitely not the last …

We recently finished our first ever cunard cruise on the Queen victoria I must say it was amazing from the shows food crew highly recommend them for cruising and we've cruised with several other lines in my book they rate number 1

This is for the 75plus crowd

I travelled on my first Cunard cruise on the Queen Victoria from Sydney to Hong Kong. I found the food and service to be fine. My cabin was nice. I had no problem with the dress code - smart casual and cocktail for formal nights. The dress code was explained on everything I read pre cruising so I don't understand how it could be a surprise. What was a surprise was how boring it was - bridge lessons 3 times a day, a whist group, watercolour lessons, music from the 20's to the 50's, ballroom dancing, string quartets and shows in the theatre like the mouth organist who played for nearly an hour! At 65, I'm just far too young for another Cunard cruise.

First time on the Cunard and it was an amazing experience! Truly a pleasure with the creativity of the staff in making our stay a pleasant one. We enjoyed the afternoon teas in Queens Room and the panache with which tea was served, complete with Scones and jam and clotted cream! The service of the crew and staff was incredible. Our trip for 18 days was delightful. Definitely signing up for the next one in 2024/25. Rebecca Mac

Best cruise yet on Queen Victoria

We've just completed a 22 night cruise on the Queen Victoria from Sydney to Singapore and loved every moment. Cunard generously upgraded us to a penthouse suite which was amazing. Decor on the ship is lovely and very traditional. Staff were all attentive and friendly. Meals in the Queens Grills were all 5 star and the choices changed every day but also included a la carte. Presentation and cooking requests were perfect. Dress code during the day was casual and evenings long trousers for men which is not difficult. No fancy cocktail dresses are required even on gala evenings but are lovely to look at. Would recommend Cunard to anyone and hope to cruise with them again.

First cunard cruise

Just got of a 3 night cruise for our anniversary booked a penthouse and we were upgraded staff on board were excellent food was excellent read a number of reviews before getting on board talking about size of meals.thay looked like small portions but came away from each meal full and could order as much as you liked.Dress code is casual during the day shorts ect smart dress after 6pm not as formal as some people say.

BRILLIANT SHORT BREAK!

This was my 112 cruise and would rate it in the top 5! Sydney to Sydney return over 5 nights on the Queen Elizabeth. Everything was perfect, food brilliant and we loved the fact passengers made an effort and dressed up for dinner in the Britannia restaurant. Ship never felt crowded, always able to find a chair to sit and enjoy a drink. Loved the absence of continuous announcements from the Cruise Director, we are adults and can read a daily programme! Shows were terrific every night, great choice of music venues. Will definitely look forward to returning to this beautiful ship next season.

Cunard does not care about complaints

Actually we were satisfied with the ship, the crew and the food - value for money. Unfortunately, Cunard did something wrong with our booking AND they did not give us any shipping information / Pier for our embarkment in San-Franzisco. No one answered the phone and we had to find the ship with a taxi by ourselfs. Back home we send and email to the customer-service. NO reply, even after a reminder ... Not even a confirmation or reply, they will care ! THIS IS TERRIBLE AND NOT A GOOD BEHAVIOR AND EVEN NOT POLITE AT ALL - ESPECIALLY FOR A PREMIUM BRAND ! We have no other choice, to ask a lawyer for help in our case . Not well done Cunard. After three cruises you are going to loose a customer !

Date of experience : 18 March 2024

Outstanding

Have sailed on Cunard 10 times, and just booked my 11th. There may be other cruise lines out there, but I'll never know because Cunard is PERFECT for me. I appreciate the classy elegance of men in tuxedos, ladies in gowns, the world class orchestras, ballroom dancing, the delicious food, the professonalism and humour ~ but most importantly, the crew members are, quite simply, outstanding. I refuse to retire, so that I can keep my Cunard piggy-bank ready to sail again, hopefully 3x year.

Date of experience : 22 February 2024

Just finished our first Cunard voyage…

Just finished our first Cunard voyage (on Queen Victoria) and had a wonderfull experience. The quality of the food and entertainment was excellent and the ship felt very comfortable. We will be travelling with Cunard again.

Fabulous 25 night holiday on Queen Mary2

Fabulous 25 night holiday on Queen Mary 2. The itinerary was great and the crew always cheery and helpful. Entertainment top class and varied. Wonderful food beautifully prepared and presented. Well maintained and beautifully presented areas for reading, relaxing and recreation. Cunard do things so very well to make your experience comfortable and very memorable.

Date of experience : 27 February 2024

Our 5th cruise with Cunard

Our 5th cruise with Cunard, and overall have no serious complaints. The ships are generally cleaner and better maintained than others we have cruised on. Unfortunately all purchases are in $US plus a 15% service charge (?) for most things on board. Why the service charge? For example, drinks already have a significant markup (particularly wine - easily 300-400% on some Aussie bottles) Most crew are very helpful and courteous. Not many young children. Understandable, as not a lot of activities for them. Dress code is good, but needs to be more strictly enforced. Cruise fares are quite reasonable compared to other ships.

Cool Cruiser

Hello Everyone

I hope you are all well.

Does anyone know when Cunard will be releasing the rest of their 2022 voyages? My original QM2 February 2022 voyage was changed (don't get me started) but I am curious where they will be going for the rest of the year.

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

Many thanks

Not 100% sure but last year I think they were all released in Uk anyway during late Nov or early Dec.

The release was supposed to be last month.  The feeling is now for next month with Ds possibly receiving an extra week prior to the usual 'early' 7 days' release to book.

Speak with your Cunard PCS and indicate your cruise destinations, months and Stateroom interests, then when 'on line' for you they will call with all your FCDs etc to hand.

Have already declared WC for 2023, b2bs, b2b2bs, plus Caribbean for November 2022 on QV (think it will be, from future port bookings in Cannary Islands).  Our PCS will  hold everything then call.

Other than a rather low grade, what is a D? And is it a good thing to be?

Diamond Club level of the Cunard World Club.

It means the passenger has completed 15 voyages or 150 nights.   The top tier.   Advantages include priority disembarkation, internet time, a meal in one of the specialty restaurants and presumably the ability to notify preferences on future cruises, in addition to the benefits received by Silver, Gold and Platinum Club members.

Yes, a good thing to be  (I'm not there yet!)

Britannia Stateroom amenities.

Your Britannia Stateroom includes all of the following amenities:

  • Fresh fruit on request

Although my steward claimed to know nothing of the benefit when we asked, aside from advising us to call room service.

If I ever get back aboard a Cunard ship it will be my first Diamond voyage.

We are awaiting our first cruise as Diamond also.

I think first timers still get a half, and return guests get upgraded to a full bottle.  I don't clearly remember my first but a blurry photo of the glasses and ice bucket on the coffee table suggests that we only received a half bottle the first time.

I've never been offered the fruit bowl.

The full bottle would be a nice bonus, if it were not Pol Aker.

We got a full bottle of P.A. last year - and perhaps our senses are getting duller, but we finished the bottle while unpacking and stowing the cabin.

I bring a stopper and order OJ with room service breakfast. Mimosas for a few days.

Being repeaters and Diamond is why we possibly get the full bottle.

david,Mississauga

Sometimes Cunard is too generous with the P.A.  In Britannia Club we received two bottles of it: one that everyone received and the other from the World Club. The two times we were in Queen's Grill there  was a bottle of P.A. in addition to the Champagne.

I have noticed that some years the P.A. is better than in other years. Perhaps it would be more accurate to rephrase that and  say it isn't as bad some years as others. On some trips we have managed to drink the full bottle - over two days that is. When they have given us a second bottle it remains untouched in the cabin.

My original QM2 February 2022 voyage was changed (don't get me started) but I am curious where they will be going for the rest of the year. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. Many thanks

Have just had an email from Cunard re a FCC.

On the email it states that new 2022 Cruises will be going on sale in November.

Hope that helps.

This is part of the email.

Thanks All for your help with this. Let's hope we can get cruising again!

I wonder whether I'd be able to rebook my December 2021 cruise to December 2022 when it comes available without losing booking perks (I know, unlikely). It just works better for my schedule.

Your booking perks will not carry over but will be whatever the current promo booking perks are at the time you rebook.

The normal booking perks pale in comparison to the perks (chiefly OBC - I get enough that it's difficult to burn through it all) available from booking onboard.  My only sure solution is to sail in 2021 and book for 2022 during that voyage.  🙃

The difficulty with that is the tendency of the prices of popular cruises to rise after the first few months, extensively sometimes.

Disappointing New Zealand Cruise

Feb 16th, 2024

As stated above, this cruise was very disappointing. Obviously Cunard cannot control the weather. But they are responsible for customer relations, which has fallen to new lows. Will not cruise with Cunard again until a significant improvement is guaranteed.

An awesome ship

Shabby chic for nursing home crowd

First and last time on a Cunard ship. They are worn and a bit shabby. The food was boring and bland. Curse of going British even though Cunard is owned by carnival cruise lines. The crowd is ancient and slow moving. With so many 90+ year old passengers at least the ship was quiet.

Injury mishandled and promised shore excursion refund never received

Sep 1st, 2023

This would have been a lovely experience because of the fun shore experiences (really loved the sled dogs!) and really good entertainment and speakers. But most of the food was very overcooked, inaccurately described, and generally disappointing. And most importantly, my medical experience was inappropriately handled, leaving me to suffer significant pain and discomfort for 72 hrs. And an utter failure to even try to refund my $125 promised to me.

A very mature cruise that was worth the price. A great first impression from Cunard.

Aug 31st, 2023

I was on this cruise and had a wonderful time. This was my first time on Cunard (I was very doubtful when I learned that Carnival now owned the line), as well as going to Canada & Alaska and I had a wonderful time. This was a very mature cruise, meaning the passengers were not rowdy or entitled (I even felt out of place at times). There was 3 sea days devoted to Cruising by the glaciers and it was an amazing experience. I met some nice people and had some nice, polite dinner conversations. The Qn. Elizabeth is very beautiful ship, with elegant wood furnishings and banisters everywhere. I also enjoyed the Mareel Spa, one day I had it all to myself, well the pool anyway. That day the stone lounge room was full. The spa is not designed for a lot of people. The showers were cool, but the water jets on the Infinity seem more varied then on Qn. Elizabeth. I did, however, try them out and I liked the cool lights that came on when the water jets sprayed. The views from both the heated lounges and the dry sauna were amazing! I wasn't expecting the floor to ceiling windows in the dry sauna! This was what I had wanted from all my cruises. The mature crowd and elegant crew, and the beautiful ship adorned with wood everywhere. I felt I was aboard an actual ship, and not a floating hotel. Cunard's Qn. Elizabeth was truly an elevated (and really affordable!) cruising experience! I will sail on the Qn. Elizabeth again! I'll want to sail the Qn. Mary 2 next.

Breathtaking Alaska

Our weather was beautiful, everything went well, and enjoyed our cruise.

Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth

Jul 19th, 2023

First cruise we had been on and thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere, the Gala evenings, friendly staff, and the Theater. We were looking for something different which is why we chose Alaska but we also wanted something charming & reliable which is why we chose Cunard. The staff are the heart of the ship - well trained and well suited for their chosen jobs.

Jul 16th, 2023

The QE was an excellent ship and we enjoyed it thoroughly. We have previously sailed the QM2 and stayed in Long Beach on the original QM. Next we are booked for the QVic in 2024 with a short QAnne 2day trip to follow in 2025 (likely to be changed to something longer ITBK).

Title: An Unforgettable Journey on the Queen Elizabeth: A Captivating Experience Review: I recently embarked on a remarkable journey aboard the Queen Elizabeth cruise ship with Cunard, spanning from June 20th to June 30th. I must say, it was an experience beyond compare. From start to finish, the entire crew and service staff went above and beyond to ensure our voyage was nothing short of exceptional. The Britannia Restaurant, led by an extraordinary team, left an indelible mark on my heart. Their attention to detail, unwavering dedication, and genuine warmth created an atmosphere of sheer delight. Each meal was a culinary masterpiece, expertly crafted and served with elegance. The service employees were attentive, accommodating, and truly embodied the spirit of hospitality. Their impeccable professionalism and genuine passion for their work were a testament to the highest standards of service excellence. - [ ] The casino on board was a hub of excitement and entertainment, with a vibrant atmosphere that captivated my senses. The friendly and knowledgeable staff added to the overall allure, creating an experience that was both exhilarating and enjoyable. The Lido Restaurant also deserves special recognition for its delectable cuisine, offering a diverse range of flavors that ca tered to every palate. The exceptional culinary delights combined with the breathtaking views made dining an unforgettable experience. I would like to extend my gratitude to Mr. Tim, the gallery organizer, for his engaging and enlightening afternoon presentations. His enthusiasm and expertise shone through as he shared his knowledge and passion for art. However, I would be remiss if I didn't mention an incident that occurred during the gallery's opening. While attempting to serve myself a glass of drink, I was caught off guard by an accusation from Mr. Tim regarding permission. I believe it was a misunderstanding, and I hope that future interactions of this nature can be handled with more diplomacy. Despite this, I truly appreciate the engaging presentations and the effort put into creating a memorable experience. In conclusion, my journey aboard the Queen Elizabeth was truly exceptional. The exceptional service, remarkable dining experiences, and thrilling entertainment options combined to create an unforgettable adventure. I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the entire crew and service staff for their unwavering commitment to ensuring our utmost comfort and satisfaction throughout the trip. I will cherish the memories and eagerly look forward to embarking on another Cunard adventure in the near future. Rating: ?????????? (5/5 stars) 1 / 1

Cunard officially welcomes new ship queen anne with ceremony at fincantieri shipyard.

VALENCIA, Calif. , April 19, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- She's the next in a fine line for Cunard, and today ( April 19 ), Queen Anne officially joined the luxury cruise line's iconic fleet during a historic handover ceremony in Italy .

Cunard took ownership of their stunning 3,000-guest ship during a traditional handover ceremony at the Fincantieri Marghera shipyard in Venice – where master shipbuilders have been constructing the luxurious vessel.

The event was attended by Italian Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy , Adolfo Urso , and Italian Minister for Relations with Parliament, Luca Ciriani .

Katie McAlister , President of Cunard; Paul Ludlow , President of Carnival UK; Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri; Luigi Matarazzo , General Manager of the Fincantieri Merchant Ships Division; and Marco Lunardi , Fincantieri Shipyard Director, were also present.

Queen Anne , the 249th ship to sail under the Cunard flag – and the third built by Fincantieri – will now set sail for Southampton ahead of her seven-night maiden voyage to Lisbon on May 3 .

As the newest addition to the Cunard fleet, Queen Anne's design concepts have been founded on heritage, craftsmanship, style, storytelling, and innovation, and the 114,000-ton ship, which spans 14 decks, will offer travelers several breath-taking experiences, and more choices of entertainment, dining, and bars than ever before.

Cunard has previously announced a series of partnerships for Queen Anne , including Le Gavroche at Sea residencies hosted by two Michelin-starred chef Michel Roux , wellness packages curated by Harper's Bazaar UK's beauty experts, and exclusive British Film Institute screenings in The Pavilion.

She will also boast the widest selection of fitness, beauty, thermal, and spa facilities so far seen on a Cunard ship, with her reimagined Mareel Wellness & Beauty proposition heralding a new era of wellbeing at sea.

Katie McAlister , President of Cunard, said: "We are so excited to welcome Queen Anne to our fleet as she completes a remarkable quartet alongside Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth , and Queen Victoria – marking the first time since 1999 that Cunard will have four ships in simultaneous service. We are now fully focused on readying her to welcome guests for her maiden voyage on May 3 before she embarks on a historic British Isles Festival Voyage, including a momentous Naming Ceremony in Cunard's spiritual home of Liverpool on June 3 ."

Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri, added: "We are very pleased and eager to deliver Queen Anne to Cunard, a pioneering figure in luxury sea travel, renowned for setting new standards in oceanic voyages for over 180 years. This beautiful and iconic ship testifies the longstanding partnership between our two companies, underscoring our shared commitment to excellence and tradition in the maritime industry. Queen Anne , as Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth , the other two ships we built for Cunard, proudly bear Fincantieri's signature, embodying our enduring expertise, reliability, and craftsmanship in shipbuilding. Constructing a liner for such a distinguished shipowner not only reconnects us to our origins but propels us towards the future with a determination to blend tradition and innovation. Fincantieri thus confirms its leadership in the cruise shipbuilding sector, a fundamental pillar of the company's business project, as both the Group's Business Plan and the vitality of the post-pandemic cruise sector clearly show."

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

cunard cruise reviews 2022

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

cunard cruise reviews 2022

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

cunard cruise reviews 2022

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

cunard cruise reviews 2022

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

cunard cruise reviews 2022

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

cunard cruise reviews 2022

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

cunard cruise reviews 2022

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Moscow cruise port

Region Russia Rivers

Local Time 2024-04-19 20:38

Moscow is a Volga River cruise port, Russia's capital and largest city (population over 12,2 million, metro 17 million). Moscow City covers a total area of approx 2610 km 2 (970 mi2). By population, the city is ranked the world's 14th largest. Moscow is one of the Russian Federation's all 3 federal cities - together with St Petersburg and Sevastopol .

Being Russian Federation's capital, Moscow is a major economic, political, scientific and cultural center, as well as Europe's biggest city.

According to Forbes 2013, Moscow has been ranked as the 9th most expensive city in the world by Mercer and has one of the largest urban economies, being ranked as an alpha global city according to Globalization and World Cities Research Network. It is also one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations in the world according to MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. Moscow is the northernmost and the coldest megacity and metropolis on the Earth. It's home to Ostankino Tower, the tallest free-standing European structure; the Federation Tower, the tallest European skyscraper; and the Moscow International Business Center.

Moscow is situated on Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia, which makes it the most populated inland city in the world. Moscow city is well known for architecture, particularly its historic buildings like Saint Basil's Cathedral. With over 40% of its territory covered by greenery, it's one of the greenest capitals and major cities in Europe and the world. Moscow is the seat of power of the Russian Government, being the site of Moscow Kremlin, a medieval city-fortress that is now the residence of the President of Russia. Moscow Kremlin and Red Square are among the several World Heritage Sites in the city.

Moscow has 2 passenger terminals, North River Terminal (Rechnoy vokzal) and South River Terminal. The regular ship routes and cruises along Moskva and Oka rivers are used mostly for entertainment. North River Terminal (1937-built) is currently the main hub for long-range routes along the river. There are 3 freight ports that serve Moscow.

In late-July 2021 the city announced plans to incorporate a fleet (unspecified number) of fully electric passenger ferries into its public transportation network from summer 2022, the goal being to reduce the dependence on cars.

  • The boats are designed with length ~22 m (72 ft), passenger capacity 42, modern amenities (Wi-Fi, USB charging points, tables for working commuters), spaces for storing scooters and bicycles.
  • Moscow Transport confirmed that two routes (with max daily capacity ~16,000 passengers) have already been mapped out.
  • Passengers will be able to pay via bank cards, the city’s Troika card (smart card for travel by any public transportation) or biometric payment cards. Those with monthly/yearly public transit tickets will use the boats at no extra cost.
  • The new electric ferry service is up to 5 times faster (in comparison to other city public transports) and ~2 times faster than by car.

Moscow cruise terminal

Moscow's cruise terminal is called North River Terminal or River Station  ("Rechnoy Vokzal" / "речной вокзал").

The terminal was opened in 1937 and is one of 2 passenger terminals (the other being South River Terminal) of the city's river transport. North River Terminal is the main hub for long-range (including cruise) shipping routes.

South River Terminal (above photo) was opened in 1985.
