25 Beautiful & Fun Places to Visit in Lagos, Nigeria
If you are looking for places to visit in Lagos, you’ve come to the right place! It is not a secret that Lagos isn’t the most touristic destination in the world. Apart from residents and Nigerians in general, most people who come here do so for business purposes. Nevertheless, the city is not bereft of tourist attractions and in this article, I will be sharing some of the best places to visit in Lagos, Nigeria.
I have written extensively about some of these places on this blog, so if you are an avid reader, you are already familiar with them. I usually write only about places I have been to and can recommend, however, for this list, I will be including a few places I haven’t visited yet (but would love to go to).
Having said that, please bear in mind that reviews and recommendations for the places I have visited are based on my personal experiences and may vary for you. Now, without further ado, if you ever find yourself looking for fun places to visit in Lagos, here are my top 25 picks!
What's Covered in this Post
Fun Places to Visit in Lagos Island
One of the great things about Lagos is its proximity to the ocean and that brings with it several stretches of beach land and getaway opportunities. But Lagos beaches aren’t like most you’d find anywhere else. In the sense that you cannot simply drive up to a beach, pull up an umbrella, sit back and relax, especially as a foreigner.
Most of the ordinary beaches you would find as you drive away from Victoria Island do not have good structures for tourists and there are gatekeepers. You would be required to pay a fee – usually, a small amount, to enjoy the oceanfront. However, there are a few areas that are more tailored to tourists. In this article, I will be focusing on the upper end of the scale – not necessarily in terms of budget alone, but also in terms of infrastructure. I will write about other beaches and beachfront properties in a separate article.
Fun Places to Visit in Lagos Island: Beaches & Beach Resorts in Lagos, Nigeria
1. jara beach resort.
Jara Beach Resort is arguably the best beach resort in Lagos at the moment. The resort stands out with its offering of an all-inclusive stay at the beachfront property. Mark and I spent three days at the resort earlier this year and we both enjoyed our time there tremendously. The resort is located in Museyo, Eleko, Lagos and is easily accessible by road.
2. Sencillo Lagos
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ministry of Enjoyment (@enjoy.ng)
Sencillo Lagos is an exclusive 3-bedroom beachfront property in Ilashe, Lagos. This is one of the places I haven’t been to yet but would love to visit if I get a chance to. Sencillo is accessible by boat from Victoria Island.
3. La Campagne Tropicana
La Campagne Tropicana is another lovely beach resort to visit in Lagos. It is located on the outskirts of Lagos and it can take a while to get there, especially if you are travelling from Lagos Mainland. The appeal of La Campagne Tropicana is the clean and beautiful beach the property is on, as well as the availability of several activities to engage in. This is the only other location in Lagos that I think deserves to call itself a resort.
4. Hov Beach Resort
View this post on Instagram A post shared by HOV BEACH LAGOS (@hovbeachlagos)
This place like Sencillo, is somewhere I’d love to visit. It is a 6-bedroom beachfront property, also located in Ilashe.
5. Tarkwa Bay
Tarkwa Bay is another beach that I can recommend a visit to. While I didn’t particularly enjoy being in this beach area (don’t take my experience as a blueprint, many people love the beach here), I loved spending time in the cabin and the areas surrounding it. Also, the beach area behind the Jaybee Beach Camp is much nicer, so be sure to check it out. Tarkwa Bay is accessible via boat from Fiki Marina on Victoria Island.
Here are other beautiful beach areas I haven’t been to yet but think are worth visiting in Lagos.
6. Moist Beach Club

More Beautiful & Fun Places to Visit in Lagos Island and Environs…
11. lakowe lakes golf and country estate.
Lakowe Lakes Golf and Country Estate is a great place for golf lovers in Lagos. Here, you can enjoy a game of golf or simply spend your time relaxing in any of the available accommodation options. My visit to Lakowe Lakes was wonderful, however, I have read some not-so-pleasant reviews lately ( see Alex’s post here , as an example). Be sure to go through to make a more informed decision and also to manage your expectations.
12. Epe Resort and Spa
View this post on Instagram A post shared by EPE RESORT AND SPA (@eperesort)
13. Lekki Conservation Centre
If you google ‘fun places to visit in Lagos’, Lekki Conservation Centre is likely to top the list. The truth is that there aren’t that many places like this in Lagos – and there should be. The main attraction of the Conservation Centre these days is the canopy walkway however, if you are anything like me, you’ll love the boardwalk even more.
14. Epe Mangroves
The Epe Mangroves and Fish Market are quite unconventional but if you find yourself in Lagos looking for an unconventional attraction, this is a place to consider visiting. Here, you can sail across the mangroves in a local canoe and spend time with the locals at the fish market or a local palm wine factory.
15. Terra Kulture
The Terra Kulture space holds a restaurant, bookstore and a nice little art gallery. But what you should try to see is a stage play here. If it is a play by Bolanle Austin-Peters, then I can guarantee that you’ll enjoy it. Look out for fan favourites like Wakaa the Musical and Fela’s Republic and the Kalakuta Queens.
16. Nike Art Gallery
This art gallery is also a visitor’s favourite in Lagos. It is a three-story building filled with artworks from all over the country, all of which, are available for purchase. At the time of this writing, entry into Nike Art Gallery is free, which adds to the appeal for visitors on a budget.
17. Bogobiri House
The atmosphere and vibe at Bogobiri are the main attraction for me. It is such a cool space nestled in Ikoyi. The Bogobiri House features a boutique hotel, restaurant, bookstore, art gallery and an intimate concert area.
18. Jazz Hole
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jazzhole (@jazzholelagos)
If you love coffee, books and the occasional concert, then you will love Jazzhole, a bookstore based in Ikoyi, Lagos.
Upbeat is a recreational centre in Lekki geared towards fitness and exercise. Here you will find facilities such as a football field, basketball court and a park with trampolines and other indoor activities. This place is also great for team-building sessions. They have a program specifically tailored to this. The program is a mix of indoor and outdoor challenges. It’s great fun!
20. Omu Resort
Omu Resort is also a recreational centre located in Lagos. This park has several fun activities for visitors to engage in. I had a pretty good time when I visited a few years back, however, the place looked unfinished. I wouldn’t normally have an issue with this but the park keeps adding activities to its space. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing but I would prefer that they put finishing touches to the facilities they already have before including more.
Also, Omu Resort has a zoo on-premises. These days, I feel very conflicted about visiting zoos, so I thought to mention this here, in case you have reservations about visiting as well.
21. Rufus and Bee
Rufus and Bee is a game arcade and bowling centre located in Victoria Island, Lagos. This is a place worth visiting to let your hair down and activate your inner child.
Fun Places to Visit in Lagos Mainland
Most of the interesting places to visit in Lagos are clustered in Victoria Island, Lekki and Ikoyi. This doesn’t mean the mainland is completely left out. Okay, let’s be honest, the mainland is left out :(. I’ve purposely left out the places below for personal reasons, as stated. But please feel free to include them if they interest you…
- The Ikeja and Maryland Malls: because there’s no unique activity to do here. Malls are good for shopping (at Shoprite), window shopping at the other stores and watching movies. These are fun things to do in Lagos, but I’m looking to include only fairly unique activities.
- The New Afrika Shrine: because I visited this place when there was no concert and let’s just say I am not tempted to return.
- Restaurants and Spots to Hangout: the mainland has a good number of these but that’s not what this list is for 🙂
Here are some places I recommend;
Beautiful and Fun Places to Visit in Lagos Mainland
22. jaekel house.
This old railroad house, located in Ebute Metta, is great for picnics and a trip back in time. The building, constructed in the late 1800s, houses relics of the old railway corporation, among other things. I’m not sure if this is usually the case, but when my friends and I visited, we got an in-depth tour of the house and its relics, rode on the manual train – which was chaotic and fun and ended our time with a picnic behind the house.
23. Johnson Jakande Tinubu Park
Because there aren’t many public parks in Lagos (and also because Lagos is overpopulated), this park can get very crowded. Nevertheless, it is a great spot for a picnic if you visit on a good day. Be aware that part of the park adjoins a major road. If blaring horns are unbearable for you, then you should visit, take your Instagram photos and escape to somewhere with more peace.
24. Badagry
I initially left Badagry out of this list because considering her history, I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s a fun place to visit in Lagos. It is also quite out of town but here we are. Also, I had originally (grudgingly) included an amusement park situated along the Lagos Ibadan Expressway which a commenter pointed out isn’t in Lagos. Hence its removal from this list.
Having said all of that, Badagry does have a few beautiful places to check out. There’s a nice stretch of beach where you can hang out and there’s also the Whispering Palms resort – which sounds like a cool spot as well.
25. Jhalobia (and Honorary Mention: Shodex Gardens)
Enjoy picnic season in any one of these two gardens situated on Lagos Mainland. I haven’t been to either but they have my attention, especially the Jhalobia Gardens. Shodex Gardens seems like the underdog though. Everyone drives past it but few people bother to go inside. As with Omu Resort, I’m not a big fan of the mini-zoo it has but judging from the pictures I see online, it seems like it would be a fairly good place to visit – especially for kids.
Tips for Travelling in and around Lagos
Tips for Travelling In and Around Lagos, Nigeria
- Plan your movements around Lagos very carefully. Lagos and Traffic are synonymous. So allow enough travel time.
- Lagos establishments can be very weird (and sometimes hostile) about taking pictures, especially if you do so with a digital camera. Honestly, I do not understand this rule and I think it is silly but this is something you should be aware of as you visit some of these places. Places featured on this list that have such policies include La Campagne Tropicana, Rufus and Bee, Hi-Impact Planet, Upbeat and Jazzhole.
- I think visitors enjoy Lagos best when they have someone to show them around. It isn’t a solo traveller-friendly city.
- Uber and Bolt work well in Lagos. Public transportation in a Danfo (the yellow buses – not recommended for tourists) are also available.
- Be situationally aware, optimize for people’s experience and keep your wits about you.

Thanks for the list. Please where is the best place to hang out to see other singles in Lagos.
Generally, the parks and malls might be good but organized events are probably better. So think about joining a group tour, or attending a daytime concert or program. You might have better chances to meet other single people there.
I have been looking for a place to visit for the festive period…. thanks for putting this together, I have an idea now
You’re welcome, Hannah! I see Terra Kulture has plays by BAP this season as well. That’ll be a great addition to your festive period plans. Early bird tickets are currently on sale now.
I’m also reading this in 2022…dont know if you can help me get in touch with ladies that explore together or anyone that organize them
Hi Deborah, you can check out Social Prefect and thaglobetrotters on Instagram. They usually have trips around/in Lagos.
Well, I am reading this in 2022..lol. Hubby and I need a getaway from the hustle and bustle of Lagos. Thank you so much for putting this list together. I will be visiting Laguna beach and upbeat.
Thanks for your comment, Hadassah! I hope you both have a great time!

Look at how you side line Lagos mainland. Haba! There are some fun things to do at Lagos mainland too. Although, they may not be well promoted or plenty. But I love the parks on the mainland but they are all seem to be at Ikeja the Capital. Thanks for sharing.
Is there an entrance fee for Bogobiri house?
I didn’t sideline the Mainland (intentionally) :). I’d love to include more fun areas (excluding the malls) and I’m open to learning about these places. For Bogobiri, there’s no entrance fee but you probably have to get something at the restaurant /shop or lodge there.
Hi-impact isn’t even in Lagos for your information.
Cool. It shouldn’t be on this list anyway. Happy to remove it.
I love this lists a lot, which of this is not quite expensive to visit out of the top ten listed..being to most of the others listed below. Thanks
I think La Campagne Tropicana, Tarkwa Bay, Laguna and Landmark Beach are places that can be visited on a relatively slim budget.
I’m short of words tho Most of these places am seeing here actually looks like abroad Didn’t know we have such in Nigeria
Looks like am spending my December in Lagos
Happy you love the list. Lagos in December is also very bubbly! Lots of concerts and parties, plays at Terra Kulture and so on. It’s a lot of fun for visitors.
You should also look around the blog for more beautiful places in other states in Nigeria 🙂
Great list Amarachi! I like to think that depending on what a tourist wants, the island or mainland could be a better pick. For instance, Maryland Mall has actually got a bustling skating arena and many other attractions host some of the best restaurants for local food.
Some of my favourite places to visit in Lagos include Bics Garden, Kalakuta Museum, Signature Beyond Art Gallery, Ultimate Paintball Arena and Ozone Cinemas.
Oh, I didn’t know Maryland Mall has a skating rink. That’s cool. Thanks for sharing your favourite spots.
You’re welcome! I forgot to add Badagry too. 😉
I’ve never been to Lagos before. I’ve never even left East. But these are such beautiful places to see. I hope to be in Lagos soon, maybe later in life when I am independent. I’m bookmarking this post!
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for your comment, Favour. Lagos can be a crazy travel experience, especially for people who have lived in saner, calmer cities. I’m sure you have a visual representation of what the city looks like and sense of what the vibe is, even though you haven’t visited yet.
The places listed in this list are part of the cleaner and beautiful sides of Lagos. I hope you get to visit a few of them when you do come here and enjoy your trip altogether.
Have you done this, yet? If you haven’t do please.
No, still haven’t.
I agree with the fact that the mainland does not have a lot of tourists attractions. I hear there is a paintball arena in Magodo though I have not been there.
We have more of malls: I have been to most of the malls a lot of times. I will usually watch a movie, sometimes do some shopping, try out the different restaurants etc.
I honestly think the policy of not allowing pictures in some of the attractions should be reviewed.
I have been to Johnson Jakande, Rufus and Bee, Omu resort, Upbeat etc.
I enjoyed Oniru beach, King Diamond beach etc as at when I visited.
I’ve been looking forward to visiting most of the beach resorts, you mentioned above.
Great list 👌👌👌
You’re a true Lagosian! Good to see you’ve visited a lot of these places…The paintball arena in Magodo is called Ziggies, I think. Sounds like it would be a fun place to check out for people into that sort of thing. Thanks for sharing, Faith!
i will like to visit the johnson jakande park but pls can you tell me how is their entrance fee there?
The last I was there, it was free to enter the park.

Getting there involves a water taxi, which adds to the sense of leaving the bustle of the city proper behind. When you arrive, a sheltered stretch of golden sand awaits. Tarkwa Bay is quieter than many of its Victoria Island counterparts, making it the ideal place to relax, soak up the sunshine, or go for a swim in the warm Gulf of Guinea. Water sports are also popular, with options for jet skiing and waterskiing. Bring a picnic with you, or purchase street-style food from the island locals who make their living catering to those who travel to the beach from the city. Speedboat rides to the beach are available from the marina for 1,500 naira per person.
Get the VIP Experience at Landmark Leisure Beach
For a completely different beach experience, head to glamorous Landmark Leisure Beach, a private beach resort on Victoria Island. Aimed at affluent Lagosians and cosmopolitan visitors, this beach boasts a scenic expanse of sand, separated from the Landmark Village by a well-maintained boardwalk. The village is a curated selection of boutiques, bars, and restaurants (including Lagos’ Hard Rock Café ) that together offer a range of quality albeit pricey wares. The club also has a whole host of organized activities for a fun-filled day out—think kite surfing, jet skiing, beach paintball, beach volleyball, and beach soccer. If you’d rather sit back and relax, there are more than 40 loungers and 20 cabanas available to rent. The beach is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and until 11:30 p.m. from Friday to Sunday.
Discover Creative Culture at Nike Art Centre
Lagos' Nike Art Centre is one of four centers for art and culture set up in Nigeria by the award-winning and internationally renowned Nigerian artist Nike Okundaye. More than a gallery, this four-story space is a testament to Nike’s considerable achievements, and to her passion for ensuring that traditional Nigerian arts survive into the modern era. Come to watch artisan craftspeople practicing the age-old arts of batik, indigo, adire, weaving, carving, embroidery, and more. You can purchase masterpieces directly from the artists (making for a fantastic souvenir of your time in Lagos), or even sign up for a workshop to learn the basics of these skills yourself. Nike also offers art tours to her other centers around Nigeria, including one in the Yoruba heartland of Oshogbo. The Lagos center is open every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Support Local Craftspeople at Lekki Market
For a more affordable souvenir shopping experience that also doubles as an authentic immersion into the Nigerian way of life, pay a visit to Lekki Market on the Lekki Peninsula. Here, craftspeople from all over the country gather to sell their wares, which range from traditional paintings and sculptures to elaborate beadwork and African fashions. In particular, the market is known for its high quality, colorful textiles, which are created using special techniques such as adire and batik. Buy lengths of cloth to take home for your own sewing projects, or commission the market’s talented seamstresses to create custom-made clothing for you on the spot. Although it has a good reputation for safety, it’s still advisable to be vigilant of your belongings. For the least chaotic experience, visit during the week when the market is a bit quieter.
Celebrate Nigerian Independence in Freedom Park
Situated on Lagos Island, downtown Freedom Park was built in 2010 to mark the 50th anniversary of Nigerian independence. Fittingly, the memorial and heritage site stands on the land once occupied by Her Majesty’s Broad Street Prison, where Nigerian freedom fighters were imprisoned before the end of colonial rule. Now, the park celebrates Nigerian culture and history with a series of contemporary statues. There is plenty of green space and benches on which to sit and reflect, and in the evening, the park becomes a center for recreation with live music, street performances, and some excellent food vendors. The park is open every day from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m., except on Sundays when it opens at 2 p.m.
Admire Splendid Monuments in Tafawa Balewa Square
Olasunkanmiariyo / Wikimedia Commons
To learn more about the Nigerian struggle for independence, combine your visit to Freedom Park with a 10-minute stroll to nearby Tafawa Balewa Square. This landmark address is named after Nigeria’s first prime minister, and it was here that Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa announced the country’s independence on October 1, 1960. There is plenty to see here, including a monumental entrance adorned with giant statues of four white horses and seven red eagles. Around the square’s perimeter, important buildings including the Nigerian National Assembly, Independence House, and Remembrance Arcade stand. The latter is dedicated to the Nigerians who fought in both world wars and the country’s own civil war. The square is often used for official events and celebrations, so you never know what you might find when you visit.
Learn About Nigerian History at the National Museum
Lagos Island is also home to the National Museum, a repository of somewhat tired but nevertheless insightful displays detailing the history of Nigeria and its various tribes. Consider hiring a guide to get the most out of your visit, and to hear the stories behind the museum’s many artworks, statues, and artifacts. Among the most interesting is the Jemaa Head, a terracotta sculpture dated to between 900 and 200 BC, and the Cycle of Life exhibit, which explores different tribal approaches to each stage of human existence. In particular, look out for a clay pot of the kind used by the Yoruba to bury babies' umbilical cords, as well as an elaborately embellished Egungun ceremonial costume worn by dancers during the funeral of the village chief. The museum opens from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and entry costs 300 naira for foreign visitors.
Reconnect With Nature at Lekki Conservation Centre
Turizimpressions / Wikimedia Commons
An oasis of green in a city otherwise dominated by concrete, Lekki Conservation Centre is located on Victoria Island. Founded in an effort to protect the native flora and fauna of the Lekki Peninsula, it incorporates 78 hectares of tropical forest accessed via a wooden boardwalk and a canopy walkway that’s renowned as the longest structure of its kind on the continent. Whether you choose to explore at ground level or high up in the trees, keep an eye out for the reserve’s exotic residents. These include the Old World mona monkey, crocodiles, monitor lizards, and an impressive variety of colorful birds. These are best viewed from the dedicated bird hide and swamp lookout station. Lekki Conservation Centre opens daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and costs 1,000 naira to enter.
Pay Your Respects to a Legend at Kalakuta Republic Museum
Musician, composer, and political activist Fela Kuti was one of Nigeria’s most famous sons. Credited with founding the Afrobeat genre (to which many of Lagos’ nightclubs and bars continue to reverberate today), he is something of a legend to music aficionados. Those who want to learn more about his life and legacy can do so at the Kalakuta Republic Museum, the same building in which Fela founded a commune that he declared independent from the military dictatorship that ruled Nigeria at the time. Today, the museum is managed by one of Fela’s sons and filled with artifacts relating to his astonishing life. These include photographs, murals, posters, album covers, newspaper cuttings, some of his many musical instruments, and his immaculately preserved bedroom. The museum is located in Ikeja, and includes a rooftop café and rooms available for overnight stays.
Take a Boat Tour of Makoko Floating Village
On the murky brown waters of Lagos Lagoon stand the stilted houses, shops, schools, and churches that make up Makoko Floating Village, a waterfront slum euphemistically entitled the Venice of Africa. The fishing village was founded over a century ago by settlers from Togo and Benin, but now provides a home for myriad different cultures and ethnicities. It is a fascinating place, and one that can be safely explored on a Makoko boat tour. Be sure to choose a local operator with ties to the community, so that your visit benefits those who need it the most rather than allowing a third party to profit off what some see as poverty tourism. However, if you do it right, a tour can be a valuable learning experience and a chance to interact with the residents of one of Lagos’ most unique areas. Most include an opportunity to eat at a local restaurant, where authentic specialties are the order of the day.
Check Out Some of the Best Nightlife Spots in Lagos
THE NEW AFRIKA SHRINE / Facebook
If you like to dance, Lagos is the city for you. With a reputation for some epic, anything-goes nightlife, it offers everything from al fresco beach bars to nightclubs with celebrity DJs and VIP table service. If a trip to the Kalakuta Republic Museum has you wishing to explore the best of Afrobeat, head to New Afrika Shrine , a 2,500-head club opened in Fela Kuti’s honor by his family. His sons Femi and Seun are regular performers, and there is a hugely popular disco night every Friday. In addition to great music, the venue is known for its inclusive atmosphere with dancers of all colors and classes welcome. Other top spots for a party include upmarket nightclub Quilox (the long-standing luxury option of choice for partygoers on Victoria Island) and Elegushi Beach (infamous for its raucous Sunday night dance parties).

200 jobs at risk as Microsoft shuts down innovation centre in Lagos
FILE PHOTO: The Microsoft logo. REUTERS/ Mike Blake<br />
There are indications that Microsoft African Development Centre (ADC) may shut down its West Africa operation, located in Lagos, Nigeria.
Industry sources in the know revealed this to The Guardian on Tuesday, though no official statement from Microsoft yet.
It was gathered that the management of Microsoft had on Monday informed the staff of the sudden development.
Affected staff, according to information gathered, might be paid their salaries till June and their HMOs.
A source within Microsoft Lagos office neither confirmed nor denied the development when reached out to yesterday.
“I cannot say anything on that for now. Thank you,” the source stated.
While the immediate cause of the shutting down of the ADC remains sketchy, industry sources claimed it might be due to the current economic situation in the country.
The industry source, however, said that ADC in East Africa, situated in Nairobi, Kenya is not affected, “only that of Nigeria.”
The ADC was launched in Nigeria in 2022 after it was set up in 2019. It formed part of Microsoft’s $100 million investment for two development centres in Africa, with the other located in Nairobi. Since its launch, ADC was reported to have hired 120 engineers and more than 200 total employees in Nigeria.
At the launch in 2022, Managing Director, Microsoft ADC, West Africa, Gafar Lawal, said, “We intended to recruit 500 full-time engineers by the end of the year or by 2023. However, currently, we have exceeded 500. This is to tell you about the abundance of talents we have in Africa.”
The ADC was commissioned by former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isah Pantami and Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The ADC aimed to facilitate the creation of tech solutions that will solve both African and global problems.
“We desire to recruit exceptional engineering talent across the continent that will build innovative solutions for global impact. This also creates opportunities for engineers to do meaningful work from their home countries and be plugged into a global engineering and development organisation,” Microsoft had said in a statement.
The ADC facility in Lagos also housed the Microsoft Garage, an entity, launched to scale innovation in the tech ecosystem. An increased Microsoft presence in Africa will empower partners and customers as they use Microsoft solutions in fields important to the continent like FinTech, AgriTech and OffGrid energy.

8 of the best places to visit in Nigeria
Apr 27, 2023 • 9 min read
Get to know Nigeria with this guide to the country's best places to visit © i_am_zews / Shutterstock
After a day or two, most visitors to Nigeria wish they had planned to stay longer in the country.
Once they start seeing the sights, and meeting the people, they realize that there is way more to do than they had believed possible. Don’t make the same mistake – give yourself a long leash. For administrative ease, the country’s 36 states are grouped into six geopolitical zones. If you intend to stay in more than one state, plan your travels along the same lines; pick an anchor city, and take things one state or zone at a time.
In the South-South, for example, the scenic and slow-paced city of Uyo can be your base to explore the Niger Delta states. In the North East, Bauchi is a perfect base to explore the rocky landscapes of Plateau, Adamawa, Borno and Taraba states.
Narrow down your list with these top places to visit in Nigeria.
Best city for an intro to Nigeria
Whether you’re traveling solo or as a group, Abuja is your best introduction to Nigeria. By design, it is a city for holidaymaking: hills, public gardens and leisure parks dot the cityscape, right through its residential districts, so you’re guaranteed ample green spaces. Millenium Park’s landscaped grounds attract hundreds of picnickers; rent a mat inside the park and just chill. Aso Rock, where Nigeria’s presidential palace gets its name, looms nicely in the background.
Abuja’s wide walkways and boulevards make walking a pleasure any time of the day. If you’re traveling with kids, Central Park , Magicland Amusement Park , Jabi Lake Park and Arttech District are go-to family spots. Together, they offer dining, outdoor activities and games – from horseback riding and roller-skating to bicycle trails and go-karts.
Abuja is also a city for hiking, and there’s a trek up any of the city’s hills every weekend. Organized by hiking groups and clubs like Naija Adventurers , Tha Outdoor Tribe and Mantrek Hikers Club , there is little or no formality to join. Periodically, the hiking extends to landmarks in neighboring Niger, Nasarawa and Kaduna states.
Planning tip: Factor in a visit to Abuja's newly opened Nike Art Gallery as you travel to or from the airport.
2. Calabar
Best city for heritage and celebrations
Tourists come to Calabar to connect a number of nature and heritage sites: the Slave History Museum , Cross River National Park , Obudu Mountain Resort and the Afi Mountain Drill Sanctuary .
The Bakor (or Ikom) monoliths, a group of 300+ stones that are 1–1.5m-tall (3–5ft), are also one of the region’s main attractions. These centuries-old stones are believed by clans in the host communities to be their forebears. Some of the stones are within easy reach of Calabar, others are in more remote forested areas, with a permanent exhibition in an open-air museum at Alok, 156km (97 miles) north of Calabar.
Another reason to visit Calabar is for its thrilling events, culminating with the Christmas festival, a December-long fiesta of concerts and street parties. Another crowd-puller here is the carnival, a pan-Nigeria cultural parade with participation from at least half a dozen countries. Leboku New Yam Festival, one of the best known in Nigeria, held in August or September, also draws people in. On the eve, host communities perform ritual ceremonies to their "stone ancestors", re-painting them in colored chalk and in readiness for the festival proper.
Best place to hang out on the beach
Lagos is a delight on many levels. The city’s coastline is already a busy corridor for resorts and beach houses. On weekends, Lagosians pour into a long stretch of private beaches to party and enjoy a suite of water-based sports. For the best beach experiences, take a short boat ride to Tarkwa Bay or hop in a car to Landmark Beach .
As the birthplace of Nollywood (Nigeria’s movie industry) and the now-global Afrobeats movement, the city has been at the heart of Nigeria’s entertainment boom for decades. In the last half of the year, Lagos' creative side is in full swing as it hosts a long list of festivals, like the Lagos International Poetry Festival , Lagos Fringe Festival and Art X Lagos .
Its bustling metropolis aside, the “city of aquatic splendor” combines urban appeal with well-kept traditions. Downtown Lagos, home to the Eyo masquerade, is a network of Igas (palaces), shrines and markets. On its most westerly end, Badagry, once a town of enslaved people, is a place where tourists and pilgrims alike come to visit historical landmarks: Badagry Heritage Museum , Mobee Slave Relics Museum, Vlekete Slave Market Museum and Brazilian Baracoon, among others.
Planning tip: Lagos is at its partying best in December when it hosts multiple concerts, musicals and entertainment shows. The city is also less crowded during the period, meaning you can get where you want to be much faster.
4. Mambilla Plateau
Best for adventure travelers
A trip to the Mambilla Plateau is the ultimate Nigerian adventure. On this multi-day journey you’ll travel through vast savannah lands and long winding roads, driving up and down multiple hilly terrains, past dairy farms, streams, and rivers. At the Mayoselbe–Tunga stretch of the highway, you’ll come within a few feet of a tribe of monkeys.
Multiple waterfalls await you at Maisamari, Lemetela and Mbanga towns. But the goal of every visitor to Mambilla is to hike up Chappal Waddi (7936ft), the highest point in Nigeria. At Gembu, a major transit town near Cameroon, explore the Donga River on local paddle boats or visit any of the tea farms, the Highland Tea being the most prominent, where you'll see harvesters fling the leaves over their shoulders into elongated, hand-made baskets strapped to their backs. Make time to explore Gashaka-Gumti National Park , the largest of Nigeria’s 17 national parks, all managed by the Nigeria Parks Service .
Planning tip: You can reach Gembu by road from Abuja, Jalingo and Yola. Visits here involve long overland travels by bus and motorbike, so it's best to allow a week at least. Nature Connects , based on the Plateau, provides guiding and advisory services. Mambilla is suitable for hiking year-round, but best between December and March, when the grounds are less slippery. This is also the best time for wildlife spotting. The plateau is at its greenest between April and September; to visit some of its waterfalls, head there between September and December.
Best city for culture and history
Ilorin, in Nigeria’s North-Central region, is usually not on the itinerary of tourists but deserves to be. The emir’s palace is at the heart of Ilorin’s cultural and spiritual life. Palace officials will show you around, the tour typically starting from the four pillars memorializing the emirate’s past wartime exploits. The multiple buildings within and adjoining the palace (Ilorin Central Mosque, for one), are markers of various periods as Ilorin transitioned in the early 19th century from an outpost of the Old Oyo Empire to a stronghold of the Sokoto Caliphate.
Its historical appeal aside, Ilorin has preserved many of its old cottage industries, including aso oke (handwoven fabric), mat- and basket-weaving. Visit the unmissable Dada pottery, to learn about the skills passed down among womenfolk for generations.
Planning tip: Ilorin, like other northern Nigerian cities, sparkles at Eid-al-Adha when the city hosts the annual durbar festival, a colorful equestrian parade in northern Nigeria. In August, there’s a traditional mass wedding ceremony, which takes place in Shao town (14km/9 miles away).
6. Northern Nigeria
Best region for architecture
Northern Nigeria is an outdoor gallery of eye-catching indigenous architecture – designed, built and decorated by master masons from the 19th century. From Sokoto and Kano (North-West) to Gombe and Maiduguri (North-East), your gaze is constantly met by brightly painted mosques.
The palaces and some public buildings are more elaborately decorated, with Hausa motifs and, in some cases, complemented by Arabic inscriptions. Palaces of the Emirs of Dutse, Bauchi, Gombe and Zaria, and the Shehu of Borno are star examples. Inside the Gidan Makama Museum (Kano) and Kanta Museum (Kebbi), formerly palaces, you’ll learn more about the history and culture of Hausaland.
There’s more Nigerian vernacular architecture in Jos, at the open-air Museum of Traditional Nigerian Architecture (MOTNA), which shares space with the Jos National Museum . Here, you’ll find lifesize replicas of huts and homesteads unique to different ethnic groups in the country. Among them: Tiv, Idoma and Afizere compounds. The Bight of Benin, modeled after the palace of the Oba of Benin, doubles as a restaurant.
Best place for ancient traditions and high-up views
Idanre is the site of an old hilltop settlement in Nigeria’s Western region. Tucked among the hills is the old palace that was home to 25 successive kings. The path to the palace, its low roofing propped up by carved wooden posts, is dotted by relics of a past civilisation, including potsherd pavements, a native court, a prison and a shrine.
The hills are Idanre’s main attraction. And looking out from 915m (3000ft) into the distance to the sprawling settlements at the foot of the hills, first occupied in the 1930s, is one of the most heartwarming views in this corner of the world.
Planning tip: Idanre hosts a number of festivals throughout the year. In February, young men march off to two caves on the hills for the annual bat-hunting festival. Orosun festival, in honor of the goddess of fertility, is held in May. The town celebrates Ogun (god of Iron) in October; the Ide festival, perhaps the grandest of all, is in December. That’s when the paramount ruler, the Owa, leads a procession up the hills to wear a crown seen only once in a year.
8. Enugu and the South-East
Best region for national history and nature walks
Enugu is the heartland of Nigeria’s South-East region, a status it earned in the early 1900s when huge reserves of coal were discovered in its hills. Today, more than a century later, its tranquil neighborhoods, pine forests and public parks makes it one of Nigeria’s touristy cities.
Begin your tour at the National Museum of Unity to understand the Igbo belief system. Part of the exhibition includes the Ijele masquerade, an important component of ceremonial gatherings in Igboland. Dig deeper into Igbo worldview at the Center for Memories . For more on Nigeria’s pre- and post-colonial history, head to the Nnamdi Azikiwe Centre, a museum and library that opened in December 2022, housed in what was the Premier’s Lodge of the old Eastern Region in the 1950s.
After touring the museums, travel up the Milken Hills to the pine forest of the suburban Ngwo town and onwards to the caves and waterfalls further down the trail. Alternately, from Enugu drive to Awhum town, famed also for its caves and waterfalls – and a monastery . The Ezeagu Tourist complex is within the vicinity; here, you can take a dip in the gentle rush of the stream.
Planning tip: If you are keen for more cave-themed adventures, then cross the inter-state border into Anambra State. The Ogbunike Caves , 77km (48 miles) southwest of Enugu, are a maze of tunnels and streams with lots of bats. Less well known, but no less spectacular, are the caves-waterfalls-rock complex at Ogba-Ukwu, 60km (38 miles) from the port city of Onitsha.

Medical Tourism: StarCare Unveils Multi-Specialty Medical Facility in Lagos
Sunday Aborisade in Abuja
The Indian Consulate General to Nigeria, Shri Chandramouli Kern, has expressed his hopes for strengthened bilateral ties between India and Nigeria in the areas of quality healthcare services.
He made the pledge at the launch of StarCare International Hospital, a leading provider of primary and specialty care operations in Ikeja, Lagos State.
Kern affirmed India’s commitment to supporting Nigeria in various endeavours.
He said the unveiling of StarCare in Lagos was marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s healthcare landscape.
The ceremony, according to a statement by the hospital, was attended by Oba Lateef Adams of Ikate Kingdom, Surulere, Lagos and Fayoade Adegoke, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State.
Kern, the Honorary Consul-General of the Consulate General India in Lagos, and Mr. Sanjay Jain, President, ICA, also joined in celebrating the introduction of advanced surgical procedures to the country.
The inauguration, according to the hospital, witnessed over 200 guests from various sectors, offering their heartfelt wishes for the hospital’s success.
In his inaugural address, Dr. Ashraff Mohammad, Chairman and Managing Director of StarCare International Hospital, a USA-trained orthopedic and spine surgeon, pledged to revolutionise Nigeria’s healthcare system.
He outlined plans to introduce advanced medical facilities and cutting-edge technology, alongside a team of internationally trained and experienced doctors from India and Nigeria.
Mohammad highlighted the introduction of groundbreaking surgical procedures such as minimally invasive surgeries, laparoscopic surgeries, laser proctology surgeries and laser spine surgeries.
He also identified endoscopic spine surgeries, cosmetic gynecology surgeries, bariatric (weight loss) surgeries, and arthroscopy (sports medicine) procedures—services which are rarely available in the country.
He emphasized the hospital’s mission to stem the tide of medical tourism from Nigeria by offering world-class healthcare at StarCare International Hospital, comparable to leading destinations like the USA, UK, Dubai and India.
He said: “By elevating the quality of care to international standards, we aim to diminish the need for Nigerians to seek medical treatments abroad in countries like the USA, UK, or India.
“StarCare is set to be a cornerstone in Nigeria’s medical landscape, ensuring that top-tier healthcare is accessible to everyone here at home.”
He further assured Nigerians that senior consultants would be available round-the-clock at the facility to ensure continuous access to expert care.
In their remarks, other dignitaries also lauded the expected positive impacts of the hospital and reiterated support to enhance the India-Nigeria bilateral relations in healthcare.
The Commissioner of Police, Adegoke congratulated the StarCare team and highlighted plans for collaboration between the hospital and Lagos police command in terms of healthcare provision.
Meanwhile, Oba Adams conveyed his best wishes to the hospital and encouraged Nigerians to utilize the facility for top-tier medical services.
Mohammad led a tour of the facility, showcasing its state-of-the-art infrastructure, including the Outpatient Department (OPD) complex, inpatient wards, private rooms, ICU-NICU complex, OT complex, and labour rooms.
